Airbag system failed and components need to be replaced...updated 08/27/15

With cruise control on at 70mph, attempted to change from left to right lane.another car sped up the right lane to pass me.turned steering wheel back to left lane and suddenly had no control over steering, braking and the steering wheel started violently shaking.car rolled twice, over metal median and turned 180 degrees facing the opposite direction on the interstate w/ roof crushed in.neither side or front air bags deployed.front and sides smashed in and frame bent.vehicle was deemed to be totaled by state farm.have been driving 40 years and have never had an accident in my life.only good thing was the seatbelt held tight as i was hanging upside down when the car finally stopped.the day before this occurred i noticed that the stability control system would randomly engage during straight driving on a perfectly dry surface.i purchased this vehicle brand new from the dealer in 2004 and the car was meticulously maintained.(it looked brand new).

Dt:the contact has a 2004 suburban. It has been in therepair shop 4-5 times for air bag problems. Theair bag light would come on periodically and then it wouldstay on. In may 05 the dealer replaced the connectors. Since then they havehad to replace the air bag on the driver's side, and the computer that goes to the air bag ondriver's side. Theyreplaced the connectors again last week on8-17-05. The contact talked to gm, and they offered him an extension on the warranty for the air bag.no one was able to give a definitive answer as what was causing the air bag problem.

Upon turning the vehicle on, the air bag deployed. There was a fire in the engine. There were no injuries. Please provide any further information.

Dt: vehicle was going about 35-40 mph and the side and front air bags did not deploy during an accident.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet suburban.the air bag warning light illuminated and the dealer, macmahon chevrolet, performed a diagnostic and found no failures.however, they were able to get the light to dim.the following day the failure occurred and the light remained illuminated for approximately a week.the light would illuminate intermittently.the vehicle was taken to the dealer for routine maintenance ,and informed the contact that the center that sends the signal for the air bagswas damaged.this failure would prevent the air bags from deploying in a crash.the current mileage is 80,000, and failure mileage was 60,000.

Dt: vehicle was going about 35-40 mph and the side and front air bags did not deploy during an accident.

When the consumer was hit at 30 mph, the side air bags did not deploy. There were minor injuries. The consumer had the vehicle towed. Please provide more information.

Last night the speedometer started ticking loudly and moving with sudden jerking movements.it then showed i was going 85 mph when i was actually going less than 45.this got progressively worse as i continued, to the point it showed i was going over 120 mph when stopped.now it is all the way to far right side and is stuck.it will not reset when the vehicle is turned off.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that the vehicle would intermittently blow hot air due to a failure with the air conditioner blower motor. The contact stated that the blower resistor module and the wiring harness were replaced; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 174,000. Updated 12/03/15*ljupdated 11/17/2017

At first i got a check engine light on with code p0430, o2 sensor lower bank 2, then bank 1. Replaced those two work for a week then rpm and speedometer gauge fluctuate up and down. I drove home from the airport one night and all gauge reading went all the way up.i was traveling on an interstate with a speed limited of 55mph and the reading in my car was over 120mph. Took to in shop, shop recommendi need speedometer sensor replaced.replaced that, now all the instrument gauge jump up and down. Sometime all the way full sometime all the way down.finally got tire of trying to fix it myself and took the car to the dealer and they found out it was a bad dash instrumentand bad catylete-conveter.thanks to chevy it cost me headache, guessing time, giving false reading and most of all thousands of dollars to get it fix right.

1st complaint: after passing a vehicle on a highway (this required the suburban to go into the passing gear), the suburban's electrical system and engine automatically shut down right on the highway. I was forced to immediately pull over in order to avoid be hit by passing vehicle. After waiting approximately 5 minutes, the suburban started up again. We started driving again but again once i tried to accelerate or pass another vehicle the suburban would shut down again. Auto mechanic has not been able to identify what causes the vehicle to do this. Very frustrating and dangerous if this happens on a busy highway or freeway. 2nd complaint:cluster panel went haywire. Speedometer stopped working, oil gauge not reading properly etc. Eventually, the entire cluster panel shut down. Had to replace it at a cost of about $500. 3rd complaint:drivers seat functions and heating mechanisim malfunctioned. The drivers heated seat stopped working and the seat controls malfunctioned. The some of the drivers seat controls stopped working or are reversed. Example; when you push the lever to move the seat forward it goes backward and vis versa. The drivers side heated seat stopped working and it will cancel out the passengers side heated seat. Example; if the passenger side heated seat is selected, it works but once you select the drivers side heated seat it will cancel out the passenger side and the drivers side still doesn't work. Auto mechanic claimed the drivers side heated seat element was bad. Had it replaced at a cost of $300 but still did not solve the problem. The original heated seat element was not bad either.

The vehicle lost it's service stability control at 40 miles per hour making it difficult for the driver to maintain control of the vehicle.the vehicle was taken to the dealer for repair for the fourth time, but there still continues to be a steering problem.there were five repair attempts to repair the system.the brakes would pulse and come on while the vehicle was in motion followed by the service stability light.the vehicle would shake violently as if it were out of control.the transmission would slip at times.a service bulletin was found in re to the clutch.the forward clutch seal/piston diss pump as well as the shift cable.the yaw rate sensor table was replaced and the abs module was reprogrammed.there was popping coming from the left when turning due to the crossmember.static noise was heard under the dash at times when the headlights flickered.both upper shock insulators were squeaking.both shock insulators were removed and replaced by new style insulators.the yaw rate sensor was replaced again with one form a new unit, the steering rotation sensor was replaced and the stability module was reprogrammed. *sc

The vehicle will shut off at interstate and low speeds and show reduced power and stability system disabled.this is very dangerous, i was nearly killed on the interstate by and 18 wheeler coming up behind me when the engine shut down..

Dt*:the contact stated without warning the speedometer stopped working.the dealership determined the speedometer cluster needed to be replaced.also, while turning the contact felt a knocking in the steering.the dealership determined the intermediate steering shaft needed to be replaced.updated 2/7/2006 -

I own a 2004 chevrolet suburban 1500 which i bought used in 2006.since the day i purchased the vehicle the back doors will not automatically unlock either with decreased speed or with the hand held remote.you actually have to reach back and unlock the doors with your hand.now, in the last few months, the remote still works but it is not unlocking any of the doors and you must use the key to unlock drivers door.i was told there are motors in each door for the locks and that replacing them are expensive, so i'm wondering if there have been any kind of recalls for this problem.

Engine intermittently goes into "reduced engine power" "traction control disabled" for no apparent reason. Engine power is reduced by two thirds. Issue has been occurring for approximately 2 years now. Gm/chevy dealership has been unable to resolve the issue. I've had the car in the shop over 20 times some times on a weekly basis. Throttle body, tac, battery cables, and other components have been changed to no avail. Several close calls on the freeway with 18 wheelers bearing down on rear end when issue has occurred. I no longer allow my wife and kids in the car. I'm sure someone will eventually die as a result of this issue and maybe then gm will address the issue. Hopefully when it happens it will not involve small children which is what suburbans are typically purchased for...to drive around families with small children. Consumers thinking they are purchasing a good size vehicle that will keep their family safe should steer away from gm products.

Instrument cluster failed .took vehicle to dealer ,they wanted $500 to replace. Took it back several months later and tried to negotiate a lower price and also found that this has been a widespread problem and that some customers report online that they have got the dealer to replace at no cost. My cluster has not been repaired and i am seeking to have gm repair it for free..

Speedometer began reading incorrectly, pegged out at maximum, drifts aimlessly, then sticks again. Cannot get speedometer to resetor read correctly.

Owner of a 2004 chevy tahoe z71 4x4 lat august 2006 my vehicle will not start after an overnight stay.since purchasing the vehicle in may of 2004, i had to replace the speedometer. After towing my vehicle to the dealer, 5 times i was told that i had a bad intake manifold and it was causing my vehicle to not start.they replaced it.a few weeks later.about a month later my vehicledid not start. I took it back to the dealer, they claimed that they couldn't find anything wrong.3 weeks later the problem emerged again, this time i was told that my battery was bad, they replaced it.now this weekend of march 10, the same problem.my vehicle is dead and will not start.i am very anal about taking my vehicle for regular checkups.why is that there is something wrong with the vehicle but the dealer cannot find or fix it. I cannot rely on y vehicle, i may go to work or to store etc.expect to get in my vehicle to come home or even on vacation.the point is that i don't know when it is going to start or halt on me.

Was driving down interstate looked at speed it was pegged out way past 120 i know i was not going that fasti was getting passed then when i stopped it only come down to about 110 says u r running 100 sitting still.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet suburban.the contact stated that the gauges in the instrument panel were inoperable.the alternator and temperature gauge would display that the vehicle was overheating.the dealer diagnosed that the instrument cluster panel would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was not contacted and the vehicle was not repaired.the failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 67,000. The vin was unavailable.

Dt:the consumer stated at 22,000 miles she was told there was a computer glitch in the vehicle.when the consumer turned the ignition off, the seat would shoot forward into the steering wheel. The controls for the seat work backwards. The consumer had to push the button forward in order for the seat to go back. She was told by her service dealer that there was a computer glitch in the program. Resetting the seat did not correct the problem.the heated seats came on by themselves.

I have a 2004 chevrolet suburban with approx. 60,000 miles.the speedometer works intermittently.sometimes it seems to register and other times not at all.when "working", the speedometer steps or jaggedly moves.i have no confidence that even if it is "working" it is not accurate.i have searched the web and there seems to be a high number of similar cases.additionally, i was in a friend's suburban last weekend and he, for the first time, had the same thing happen.he had approx. The same mileage (60,000 miles).very dangerous not to know how fast you are going at any given time.

New, 6 month old vehicle caught fire while in a parking lot.was in parking lot for approx 1 1/2-2 hrs before fire, windows up, doors locked.insurance appraiser and fire marshal says electrical fire, accidental.fire marshal says driver's seat control, insurance says driver's door or window control.never heard what gm says caused by.gm took no responsibility - insurance had to pay off.was reported to fire dept, fire marshal investigated.gm send someone to investigate about 2-3 weeks later. I met him at dealership.he pulled off seat control box and said it didn't cause the fire.pulled off driver's door cover and looked.never said what he thought caused fire.

Instrument clustershorts out and gear indicator goes blank. No message center information warnings are displayed. Part is defective and car makers should replace it. Not knowing what gearvehicle is in can lead to death if vehicle left in neutral and rolls away. Gm needs to fix this expensive problem. Also 4l60e transmission on these vehicles fails and starts slipping because of defective sun shell and real piston seal. Gm should recall all these badtransmissions. Warranty should have been for life. Why should such an expensive part to repair failunder normal use? recall !both these parts fail when driving. All warning of vehicle conditions are sent to failed cluster. Vehicle was made in mexico for re-importation and sale in usa andmaybe parts suppliers in mexico provided defective parts. Many people have suffered financial loss trying to fix these problems, lastly, the emission solenoid near the tank also fails. Vehicle may not pass emission.

I was driving along the freeway and i noticed that on the computerized dashboard, the service tire monitor was flashing. I was driving 50 mph and when i looked at the speedometer, the gauge went up to 120 mph and even though i turned the engine off the gauge is still at 120 mph. I also noticed that the battery gauge is not working, because the gauge is not moving at all and when i looked at the rpm gauge, i was only pressing the gas slightly, the rpm gauge went up to the maximum level.when i was coming back home from work the same day, when i started the engine i felt it right away that whenever i put my foot on the gas, the vehicle is just moving slowly, until it stopped moving. I have it towed to bill heard dealership and they found out that it was the transmission was tore and according to the dealership that i need to have a new transmission.this vehicle is a 2004 chevrolet suburban, bought it brand new. Right now we have67,880 mileage and we only have this vehicle for 4 1/2 years. Few months prior to this incident, i received a letter from gm, about a condition that may develop on this vehicle which is where one or more of the instrument panel gauge needles may stick, flutter or become inoperative and may cause inaccurate readings, including the speedometer and the fuel gauge. I have kept that letter and called the gm and i was advised to take the vehicle to the dealership.i was just wandering, because it all happened in one day. I don't know if this problem is related to the transmission.

The truck fails to restart after driving itan at first it would restart after 15 -20 minutes after it sitsan now itdoes not start at allso far i know it is happening to more than 20 vehicles including the state patrol2016 suburbansand several of the pickups

Instrument cluster panel in a 2004 chevy suburban was diagnosed by a gm dealership as defective on 3/4/2009 with 70,400miles.oil gauge and battery gauge fails to read properly often bouncing around/fluttering around during vehicle operation.gauges do not return to zero while vehicle is not operating.gauge failure was noted on 2/10/2009.gm has yet to agree to replace cluster panel though a letter was sent to gm owners regarding matter.letter clearly states not to bring vehicle in to have cluster panel checked until there is believed to be an issue.

Instrument cluster failed after extreme cold temperatures, fuel gauge, temperature gauge, oil pressure gauge and battery charging system gauge. Gm knows about the faulty gauges and as of this date has not made a recall of the instrument panel.considering all legal remedies afforded by law as this is a problem that can be rectified by gm by replacing the aforementioned faulty factory equipment.

In researching online i've noticed this on many different chevy 2004 models. The tachometer, fuel gage, and speedometer are what i noticed problems with and what others have seen problems with though the speedometer is the most prevalently noticed item. The gauge motors are not stepping back down when rpms, speed, or fuel levels drop thus leading drivers to respond in potentially dangerous ways. In my own case i almost caused a pile up when i thought i had lost my senses and applied my brakes a little harder than i should have, almost lost control of the vehicle, and certainly agitated the drivers behind me when they almost hit my vehicle. I don't typically get this problem as i typically drive less than 10 miles a day. When i do have to drive more than 60 miles i tend to have this problem. The problem has also been reported to be more prevalent in cold conditions which fits with the explanation i have had that it is the housing of the gear motors breaking down and jamming the gauge gears in the instrument panel. A problem with the plastic used in the housing of the gear magnets; "the problem lies with the plastic material that holds the permanent magnet for the rotor of the stepper motor." now that i am aware of the problem and have asked around about fixes i have to stop the vehicle completely and turn it off. From there i have to turn the key enough to bring the instrument panel momentarily on and then back off. It steps the tachometer, speedometer, and fuel gauge back down, (bit by bit with each turn of the key) whichever is having the problem. This solution has been reported to stop working as the problem persists. The instrument panel needs to be replaced at a cost estimate of over $450 from a private shop and at over $800 from the chevy dealership. A gps for speed and a log book w/ calculator can get two of the three solved for me at a price of less than $200; it's just not safe to be writing log book entries while i'm driving.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet suburban. While the vehicle was turned off the driver heard a loud noise under the driver's seat. The wires under the seat were exposed. The driver also stated that there were intermittent failures with the electrical system. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who replaced the exposed wires with electrical tape. The failure mileage was approximately 48250. The current mileage was 48349.

My speedometer doesn't consistently work. Some time it does.. Some times it says i'm doing 110 mph and people are passing me and my rpms are at 1800. Also when my speed ometer doesn't work my rear dfog and wiper do work.when my rear defog and wiper don't work my speedometer does work.i checked all the fuses in all three fuse boxes and none are blown.

Chevy suburban 2004 defective speedometer.the part is defective, but the dealer wants $500 to make the vehicle safe again.it is a hazard on the road with the wrong speed readout.gm should owe up to the problem, fix the part/vehiclesin the name of safety.this will be my last gm if they fail to amend the problem at their cost.

Speedometer failure began with the needle "jerking" asvehicle speed increased and eventually, one night the needle went beyond 120 mph and stuck on the peg while i was on a rural highway with no way to gauge my speed.

Speedometer is defective.registers between 35 and 120 mph when car is stopped.

On my chevrolet suburban 2004;speedometer failed.my speedometer does not work any more.it no longer calculates speed.it is stuck pointing (resting) past fastest label of 120mph.

I have a 2004 chevrolet suburban. The speedometer was very erratic , sometimes showing 30 to 50 mph when parked. While driving the speedometer would jump and show 20 to 60 miles overthe accurate gps speed. Now it read 120 mph all the time. This was a very dangerous matter.

The speedometer quits working or gets jumpy and sporadic in when and how it works.vehicle only has 57000 miles on it.the only event that we thought caused it was the really cold temperatures but its warmer now and completely quit working. It is everytime we are in the vehicle driving that it doesn't work.we have not got it fixed yet.researching problem first to make sure no recalls were done on it first.

Our speedometer quit working and would either sho us going much slower or much faster than we really were.we were hoping that it was just a sensor, but it was the wiring in the dash, they required that we send in the whole front module and they sent us a new one with our old odometer miles already set.they also required that we send in the old one.our mechanic told us that they had just had to replace a pickups speedometer as well.same year, and similar model.

Speedometer not registering accurately. While in neutral 90 mph.

2004 chevy suburban z71, less than 16000 miles, speedometer periodically displays upwards of 30 - 120+ mph over actual speed. Chevy dealer repair cost is too high. My understanding is that this issue is widespread. Is there yet a recall?

4 days ago i noticed that my speedometer arrow was all the way top the right.shut of the car and the needle reset to 30 mph and then it went up as i increased my speed.yesterday it was stuck on 0 even though i was moving.then it worked okay later that evening.later it registered the wrong speed.

2004 chevrolet suburban - speedometer not working properly. Does not give the right speed. May be going 30 but says 70 and vice versa.

The speedometer gives a false reading that could cause operation of the vehicle at an unsafe speed. This first happened while driving with my family. I noticed that the speedometer seemed to be giving a false reading.using a gpsmy wife was able to confirm that i was unknowingly traveling at a speed very different than the speed limit. The issue is intermittent .the dealer says this is a known problem but will not fix it despite the obvious safety concerns.

I have a 2004 chevy suburban lt and the speedometer is stuck and runs wildly on occasion.rarely functions properly.the dealership says it will cost $500+ to replace and is not covered by warranty.vehicle had 51k miles when the problem started.i think this is a defect built into the car and i should not have to pay for replacement!

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban.while driving the speedometer displayed inaccurate information. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection.the technician stated that the instrument panel cluster needed to be replaced. No repairs were made.the failure and current mileages were 132,000.the vin was unavailable.

Speedometer on 2004 suburban pegs out at 120 when driving slowly and it never returns to 0.based on web searches this is typical failure mode of gm instrument cluster which requires $400-$500 to replace.i, like many others can't afford to replace defective parts and therefore drive at unknown speeds

Speedometer does not work properly on 2004chevy z71 tahoe.it is either pegged at 120 mph, reads too high , or reads too low.

Speedometer became erratic. Jumping to 120 mph while driving 30 mph. Showing 70 mph while standing still. I have videos of this phenomenon. Dealer stated it is a common occurrence, had to pull instrument cluster from dash and ultimately replace it at a cost of $595.

My speedometer went from 55 to 120 in a matter of seconds. Then if you give it a couple of days it would be right again. Then all of a sudden i am driving down the interstate and it would go to 120 again. The dealership hooked it up to the computer and they said they "rebooted the cluster" and it's working for now. They said a lot of people have had this happen and it may only be a temporary fix. So what if i have my cruise control set at 65 and then my speedometer goes to 120? i see an instant accident happening! chevrolet should have a recall on this issue.

Speedometer on 04 tahoe stopped working.

2004 z71 chevy suburban, broken speedometer. @ 55,000 miles.

Speedometer malfunction.problems include speedometer being stuck at 0 mph or other speeds, speedometer beginning at 60 mph and reaching 120 mph when actually traveling 60 mph, and other random problems.

Speedometer failure. Bad instrument cluster. Very unsafe.

04 suburban speedometer quit working. Speedometer said 120 mph when sitting still. Then got stuck nd would drop slowly. Now it does not work at all. It sits on zero.

Started having problems with the speedometer reading incorrect speed at about 40k miles.currently have 55k miles on my 2004 suburban.the speedometer often reads over 100 mph sitting in my driveway.it seems to occur after 30+ minutes of continued driving.additionally, the tachometer becomes erratic and sometimes just drops to 0 while driving.

1) instrument cluster in my 2004 suburban (speedometer and fuel gage) failed during operation2) 4 instances of running the vehicle completely out of fuel and requiring roadside service.speedometer failure is intermittent failures during operation result in numerous safetyand legal issues.3) gm will correct the failure free of charge if the vehicle has less than 70,000 miles.after the 70,000 mile mark it is a very costly repair for a part gm knows is defective.

Speedometer reads incorrectly.reads speeds over 30 mph while standing still,120 mph while going 40mph, or nothing at all.it varies from day to day.

Vehicle speedometer displays an incorrect reading on the dash panel gauge.while in park or stopped, the gauge will show anywhere from 20-30 miles per hour and while driving will erratically jump from speed to speed.rpm gauge is not working at all.gas gauge, upon filling up, is slow to register to full.

I have a chevy suburban (2004) that the speedometer just stop working. It first started giving me a slower speed than i was actually going. At 35mph it was registering 9mph. After a few days it was normal then all of a sudden it does not register at all. Now it stays at 15 mph without the vehicle moving.

My family and i were traveling on the interstate in our 2004 chevy suburban when my speedometer started fluctuating from 20 mph to 70 mph to 120 mph.the engine didn't seem to change its running speed as the speedometer fluctuations were occurring.i only have 40k miles, and i'm the original owner.my wife mainly drives it to take our kids to school and their activities, and errands.will the dealer repair for free?

2004 chevrolet suburban speedometer erratic.reading 40 mph parked.found long list of other owners with same complaint at http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/chevrolet-tahoe/t2bgkbgi55eknu77c/p8 .

2004 chevy tahoe that has a speedometer malfunction.the vehicle is going 120 mph when it is sitting still.. I have read numerous complaints about this issue and gm has yet to have a recall and fix this problem..i believe they are waiting for consumers to die before they bring this issue to the forefront..current fix is a replacement bezel for 600.00 ..if this is a common failure then why aren't we fixing it??

Driving to doctor appt and noticed that speedometer stuck on 80 mph.when i exited toll road, still showing 80 mph.after stopping and starting throughout the day, speedometer is now stuck on 120 mph- very dangerous!i bought this suburban new in 2004 and was told today after reporting incident to gm that i was out of the 7 year/70,000 mile recall.my problem..i live in the country 20 miles from the nearest town/work and 90 miles from doctor- is it a wonder i have more that 70,000 miles on a 2004 model?

Faulty speedometer.while idling, the speedometer would begin at approx 80 mpg and go higher as i started to drive (30 mph read 110 mph).then it would gradually go down each time the vehicle came to a stop.it would take 5 - 10 stops before it would finally go to zero.this occurred over a couple of months and finally the speedometer completely quit working.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet suburban.the speedometer malfunctioned and does not operate at all.the repair shop could not determine the cause of the failure and no repairs were made.at 40,000 miles, the dealer rotated the tires, but did not check the rotors.the failure mileage was 60,539 and current mileage was 70,000. Updated 03/14/08.*ljthe power window motors, universal joints and shocks all had to be replaced. Updated

My 2004 chevrolet suburban speedometer stopped working at 50,000 miles.this is a wide spread problem and chevrolet should do a recall and fix the problem at their expense.

Speedometer on 2004 chevy suburban works sporadically since nov. 2006.cost to replace will be approx. $500.

My speedometer stopped working no warning while on highway went from 70 mph to 120 mph.

2004 chevy suburban speedometer goes crazy, sometimes set at 120 mph while setting still. While driving i never know the speed i'm going. One day my wife was driving the speedometer justkept climbing to 120 mph , that is when it started. Sometimes the speedometer goes down to 0 mph then while driving say 30 mph i guess it may take youto 60 mph, 80 mph while at the same rpm.nothing has been done ,it has 44000 miles therefore my warranty is out i have to see if the ext warranty i got covers this, also i have been checking the internet if anyone had similar problems and i have found numerous people on topix.net. Thank you for you're time.

Speedometer fluctuates showing speeds greater than actual speed.speeds are greater by anywhere from 10 mph to 80 mph over actual speed.as i write this, the car is parked/engine off and speed indicated is 60 mph.

I own a 2004 chevy suburban. My son was detailing the car in the driveway. My other son was detailing his truck behind it. My son detailing the suburban had the key turned to "accessory" and was listening to music while working. As he was wiping the dash board off, his arm hit the steering wheel shifter and popped the truck out of gear! it rolled down the driveway hitting my other son's truck, luckily missing him!come to find out, gm had produced this vehicle with the accessory position unlocking the shifter. I checked the manual and found no warning or reference to this situation. I own a 2002 gm truck and it put in accessory does not unlock the shifter.i contacted gm to investigate and warn it's owners, but they found on march 17, 2005 by letter to me that the suburban was "operating as designed".no other vehicle has ever unlocked the shifter in the accessory position.lives are in danger. Many people listen to the music in their vehicle while detailing or even tailgating at a football game. Someone will be crushed if they are not warned of the design flaw. I have tried writing a couple news orginizations and have warned everyone i know. I think it may take you to help. Please help!!

I learned through a friend today that there may be a condition in my 2004 chevrolet suburban that i should be very careful with when leaving small children in the vehicle for brief periods of time.i was told that when the key is turned to the first/accessories position, that the shifter lock disengages so that the shifter can be moved out of park and into neutral, etc.because this could easily be an issue when i leave my child in the vehicle and leave the key turned to the accessory position while i'm loading the car, walking around to reach him to fasten seat-belt, fill gas, etc., i tested it, and it's true.the shifter can be easily moved into neutral when the key is in the accessory position.i know this is true not only on some or all of the suburbans, but on yukons, too.this should be recalled and corrected.

Center console with rear climate and radio controls stopped working.took it to riverton chevrolet, and they replaced some faulty wiring.

The vehicle caught fire in the engine compartment whilethe consumer was waiting at a traffic light. The fire was extinguished . The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The cause was determined to be a faulty ground wire.

Vehicle fire- started truck, turned on front and rear heater and defrosters.~2-3min later, the truck was completely engulfed in flames and smoke.caught a second car on fire and house on fire.

A firestarted in the electrical system behind the glove compartment while driving 20 mph. Consumer extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher.vehicle was towed to the dealer, but dealer did not determine the cause of the fire.

The vehicle will shut off at interstate and low speeds and show reduced power and stability system disabled.this is very dangerous, i was nearly killed on the interstate by and 18 wheeler coming up behind me when the engine shut down..

I had the vehicle in park, on a hill, and when i shifted it into drive, felt a pop in the pedal. Then the brakes would not hold the vehicle. I had a very difficult time stopping the vehicle due to the loss of brake pressure. The brakes pedal would just fall to the floor. My husband came out and found one of the rear brake lines was rusted and leaking fluid. The brake lines have visible rust on the outside of them.

I was driving at highway speed just starting to exit off ramp brakes went to the floor and dash lights came on for brakes, also stability loss message came on. Could have been killed or had serious accident.lucky did not but is a very serious issue.brought to shop and was told and shown all brake lines were rusted real bad and one broke open while i was exiting that off ramp.i called gm but they did nothing! i was very upset with this and feel this should be brought to the attention of someone who will really look into this for the safety of all.also my 1997 chevy conversion van,and my husbands 2005 chevy silverado the same thing happened to those brake lines while driving broke open due to rust, losing brakes while driving.van mileage was 70000,and silverado mileage was 75000.this is so dangerous i urge you to please check into it before someone gets killed.i recently saw on the news that suburu recalled cars in northern states for rusted brake lines same as this.gm should be doing the same.

Total brake failure (vehicle has 95,387) miles) at 40 mph in motion.stabil-trac light indicated at the time of failure, service brake indicator on display information console. . deployed 4wd low, dropped to lower gear and hit emergency brake to stop the vehicle on shoulder of road. Got out of vehicle saw brake fluid all over the skids and frame. Cause:towed to local shop indicated that brake lines on driver side and lines going to front wheel were completely rusty and "like paper".this was unsettling i don't live near saltwater but drive the vehicle a lot in winter.had i been in a densely populated area, there certainly would have been loss of life.this vehicle weighs over 6000 lbs and no brakes is like to trying to stop a train. Please investigate similar failures as this failure in similar vehicles/any vehicle could cause loss of life.

Was driving at a very low rate of speed; trying to stop when what felt like the antilock brakes kicked on and the message "traction active" appeared on my console.this made it very difficult to control and stop the vehicle.then when trying to accelerate, vehicle would lug down and not want to go.there was also a noise, like a pump or something when trying to brake or accelerate.turning off the stabilitrack seems to stop this from happening, which in turn means i do not have antilock brakes.this is a huge safety issue, especially if trying to merge, pass through an intersection or while driving at a high rate of speed.

The hydro booster is defective. The car triggers my breaks and makes noises make steering braking difficult. It happens everyfay throught the day while im driving

I was traveling down the road at 60 mph when the display said "reduced engine power" and my vehicle decreased in power.it didn't matter how much i pressed the accelerator the car would only go 10 miles an hour.i pulled over, checked under the hood, everything looked fine.started it again, it drove fine for about 2 miles then the same message was displayed.i turned around and headed home driving 10 miles an hour.

Driving on interstate road and the vehicle ceased running.pulled off road and had to be towed back to garage.no vehicle function worked except emergency flashers.vehicle just "died"and stopped operating.

Gm tsb 06-06-019b gradual coolant loss (june 2007) my vehicle is showing signs of coolant loss.sampled oil via caterpillar, results show coolant in oil.changed oil and found sludge in oil filter.bought vehicle from a dealer "as is-no warranty" . Cannot believe a professional shop "missed this" on their vehicle inspection/prep for re-sale.will be taking to different dealer for coolant pressure test09.09.14 to verify what i already know. My vehicle has the castech cylinder heads. This is a repair that i cannot pay for out of pocket at this time. I'm hoping for out of warranty assistance to help w this repair.found thousands of complaints regarding this issue on-line and in gm forums. Someone will eventually have an engine seize or catch fire on them.

The vehicle will shut off at interstate and low speeds and show reduced power and stability system disabled.this is very dangerous, i was nearly killed on the interstate by and 18 wheeler coming up behind me when the engine shut down..

Driving down the road, when all ofa sudden "reduced engine power".replaced the throttle body, pedal sensor, and wiring harness without any success. Gm wants 150 just to plug it into their computer to tell me what i can get down for free with my buddies code reader....no i won't let my wife or children drive the car. I only drive it to and from work. Had to go out and buy a toyota just to keep my mind at ease so my wife and or kids won't get killed from this problem. It seems like chevy/gmc doesn't care about this issue until multiple people die from this. I hope to see that they will do the right thing. Thinking of contacting my congress representative to see what they can do to help out us that are dealing with this issue. Nobody else is.

2004 chevrolet tahoe has had the following issues before 100k miles:1.replaced fuel pump2.engine overheating(taken to the dealership service dept 2x for issue)3.oil pressue - lost oil pressue4.transmission needs replaced

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet suburban. While driving approximately 3-5 mph the vehicle stalled.the warning light displayed reduced engine power. She engaged her hazard lights and pulled over to the right side of the road. She turned the vehicle off and waited a few seconds and was able to restart it. When she restarted the vehicle the reduced engine light was still on and she turned the vehicle off again and restarted it. The vehicle began to function normally. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for the failure. The failure and current mileage was 104,788.

2004 chevy suburban w/80,000 mi. Used for towing rv-"reduced engine power". Codes are not specific for the problem and multiple repairs have not fixed problem. This is an extreme hazard when towing as rig cannot move off the road with so little power. I am reading many posts online for the same issue.

Noticed a strong smell of antifreeze from outside the vehicle after turning it off.then began to notice fluid leaking from under right rear quarter behind the wheel.took vehicle to webb chevrolet.diagnosis was faulty coolant lines running into other lines forcing a leak of coolant.i wasn't to clear on diagnosis, but they had to order parts and we lost the vehicle for 3 days.

Upon turning the vehicle on, the air bag deployed. There was a fire in the engine. There were no injuries. Please provide any further information.

Dt*:the contact stated while traveling at various speeds, the reduced engine power alarm rings and the engine immediately loses power.the power returns after the vehicle is turned off and back on.the dealership rewired the vehicle, replaced the modulator, sensor and relay.these attempts have not repaired the problem.

There is a "lack of power" with my 2004 chevrolet suburban 1500.my previous 1999 chevy tahoe towed my boat and trailer easilymy new suburban with 40 more horsepower has a very difficult time towing the trailer.it is very difficult to maintain highway speeds without the transmission constantly shifting in and out of lower gears.it doesn't seem to matter if i am in tow mode or not.with 40 more hp. Than the other vehicle and the same amount of torque this should be easy for this truck.more importantly there is a great lack of acceleration when you depress the pedal.i guess you would call it a big lag.i am told this is called "torque management."well torque management almost got my family killed the other day!when pulling into traffic a car came over the hill rather quickly i stepped on the gas .....and nothing happened it was like i was dragging an anchor.the dealer says that is the way they are designed and computer controlled andthere is nothing that can be done about it.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet suburban. The contact was driving 70 mph when the reduce engine power stability warning message displayed as the vehicle abnormally decelerated.the vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who advised that the throttle body, throttle body sensors and the catalytic converter needed to be replaced. The remedy failed to repair the problem. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 183,632.

2004 chevy suburban exhaust system produces noise at idle ;driving;and after shut down. Gm claims noise (popping) is from muffler heat shield expansion and contraction. Tsb to correct noise (modifying heat shield) is ineffective. In 2004 motor magazine reported gm acknowledgedthe noise came from trapped water inside the muffler. The water turns to super heated steamand produces a pop or bang inside the muffler. Gm will not replace the muffler as the problem goes back to 2000 model year. Moreover people ask what that strange noise is from my suburban, i tell them a defective muffler.

Vehicle had an odor that smelledlike antifreeze.consumer and all of her family members and friendsbecame ill after riding in the vehicle.theyhad headaches/burning eyes/numbness,and sore throats.the problem was reported, and the manufacturer stated nothing was wrong with the vehicle, howeverconsumer was told that prior to the purchase of the vehicle there was an antifreeze spill, and she was not made aware of that at time of purchase.consumer stopped driving the vehicle.

2004 chevrolet suburban. Consumer states unsatisfactory transaction *tgwthe consumer stated he was unable to lower the spare tire on his vehicle. The tire was stored under the rear of the vehicle on a cable lowering mechanism.the tire would lower only four inches because of a secondary latch system. The system was supposed to be able to be released according to the owners manual. The consumer spent hours over a three day period of time, trying to get the tire lowered to the ground. He took the vehicle to the dealer to have them release it.the mechanic could not lower it either.they removed the entire mechanism and the tire and at the consumers request they put it in the cargo area. The consumer stated his concern was that the system was improperly designed. It was susceptible to rust after a short period of time which could allow it to malfunction.

Within one month of vehicle purchase consumer began to hear a loud pitch screeching noise any time the vehicle was stopped with the air conditioner on. Noise can be heard both inside and outside of the vehicle at some distance from vehicle. Noise has progressively worsened over year period and occasionally occurs while vehicle is in motion with air conditioner on.

Left front parking light keeps going out.i see other vehicle, same make and model with the same problem. The light housing is not sealed.the consumer stated change the bulb but the problem still persists. Updated 10/03/07

Fuel gauge is not accurately reporting fuel level. When fuel level is too low, vehicle shuts down and will not restart.low level warning light does not come on.vehicle has to be jump started in order to reset security mechanism.can cause traffic issues and/or collision from abruptness of issue and happens without warning wherever you are.i can just imagine what a problem it would be if it happened in an intersection or running down the highway.since the vehicle shuts down, this would mean power steering and power brakes would be non-functional increasing the potential risk for an accident or collision.

I have a 2004 chevy suburban with 93409 mile, has been well taken care of. A few months ago i notice it was having a hard time starting. Last wk we ran out of gas at 1.4 tank and this weekend while the family was on a trip pulling a trailer we ran out of gas at 1/2 tank, if you go by the gas gage. We could have been badly hurt if we were on a hill, or something when we all of a sudden have no powersteering, brakes, etc.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet suburban.the contact stated that the fuel gauge was reading inaccurately and he was unable to determine how much fuel was in the vehicle. The contact did not inform the dealer or manufacturer of the failure nor was the vehiclerepaired.the current mileage was 95,000 and the failure mileage was 65,000.the vin was unavailable.

July 19th in denver colorado 2004 chevy suburban stalled on santa fe blvd. In heavy traffic.waited30 minutes and then started truck and went about 2 miles and stalled again called local dealership and had truck towed to dealership.dealership replaced fuel pump under warranty.drove truck 1.5 hours and same issue of truck stalling.took back to dealership and mechanic on duty told me that it was a known defect with the 2004 chevy suburban and nothing could be done until the air temperature went down.temperature was around 100 degrees.problem is caused by high temperature and altitude. Problem is vapor lock.on the 22 of july dealership was told to replace the fuel pump again by local chevy area vehicle manager (avm).dealership replaced the fuel pump again and i drove it for 1.5 hours and it stalled again in traffic.took suburban back to dealership next morning.dealership assured me that 700 new fuel pumps are available to fix problem and one would be installed on my truck on july 26th.on july 26th found out that fuel pump sent by chevorlet corporate would not fit the suburban and that i had to take my chances and drive it back to minnesota.temperature was cooler and chevy felt it was worth the risk for me to drive it back to minnesota and let them know if i had a problem.dealership also admitted that the fuel pump in the suburban was already the "new " height altitude version of the fuel pump and that the dealership had multiple vehicles with the same problem and chevy does not know what the problem is. Dealership says issue is with 2004 suburbans and silverados.known issue at chevy and they are doing nothing to fix it.suburbanwill still not work at high altitudes (denver) and temperatures in the 90s.suburbanwas not fixed. Luckily weather cooled down.call chevy 800-222-1020 refer to ticket 1-350803636 ask for arch summers he is the chevy representative i am waiting for call back from.

Mu suv stalled on the i-15 freeway. I was driving at 70 mph. Outside temp. Was 95f. Elevation 5000 ft. At the top of cajun pass. I was going to have a serious accident. The dealerreplaced thfuel pump. The suv had 1200 miles.

Vehicle stalled on highway 6 in utah while going up a steep incline.took it to riverton chevrolet where the diagnosis was a failed fuel pump.fuel pump was replaced.

Had starting problems with my suv. Towed to dealer, where i was told that the fuel pump went bad due to a clogged fuel filter. Called to complain to gm that the requirement to replace the fuel filter was not listed on their scheduled maintenance chart in the owner's manual, i was then told that the pump shorted out which caused the failure. This is an internal fuel pump mounted within the tank itself.

6-2006, 98 degrees, centennial, colorado2004 chevy 8.1 liter suburban, driving 55-60 mph for approx.1 hour(no trailer) vehicle suddenly loss power, i had to pull over and have vehicle towed to chevy dealer. (dealer stated codes indicated misfiring) further testing, service was able to duplicate issue and locate a bulletin outlining the problem.per dealer, faulty fuel pump, gm advised to switch fuel pump to a high altitude pump, to remedy the issue. Which was done, and it fixed the issue.as the 8.1 liter suburban is a veh. Primarily used for towing, this needs to be a recall or campaign to warn people. This sudden loss of power and control could be catastrophic in nature.

Fuel pump seizes when in hot climates or when towing a trailer. Gm replaced the fuel pump last year and it appeared to solve the problem. But, the problem occurred again while pulling a trailer up and down a steep mountain pass resulting in a loss of brakes and steering when the engine stalled. This occurs when the fuel tank is at 1/4 full or less. The trailering fuel advance delivers fuel to the engine and if not needed then it is returned to the tank and recirculation. The fuel is warm when returned to the tank. The longer the engine runs the hotter the fuel becomes and when the fuel in the tank becomes hot enough the fuel pump, which is located in the fuel tank then seizes and the engine stalls. This is a major safety hazard, particularly when trailering in the mountains and the loss of brakes and steering occurs.the only solution when this occurs is to pull to the side of the road if possible, raise the hood and let the vehicle cool for 15-20 minutes and then start again. Or, find the nearest gas station and fill the tank with cool gasoline so the fuel pump no longer seizes. In the case of breaking down on the side of the road, this is another major safety hazard since this problem occurs both going up or down hills and there is a loss of steering and brakes. This means the vehicle is often in traffic and may result in an accident.

2004 chevrolet tahoe has had the following issues before 100k miles:1.replaced fuel pump2.engine overheating(taken to the dealership service dept 2x for issue)3.oil pressue - lost oil pressue4.transmission needs replaced

The exhaust manifold bolts have snapped off, 4 of them to be exact. Exhaust fumes can now leak into to the cab and poison occupants.

2004 chevrolet suburban rear window hinge detaching from glass causing a safety concern that window could dislodge and fly off an hit another vehicle or person.the hinges appear to be glued to glass and the glue is failing and detaching from window.after researching the issue on the web, chevrolet is aware of the issue and has not issued a recall.this is a serious issue that could result in serious injury or death to others.in july of 2004 chevrolet issued the following bulletin:"customer satisfaction - liftgate window molding #04065 - (july 26, 2004)04065 - liftgate window molding2005 chevrolet tahoe, suburban2005 gmc yukon, yukon xlon july 20, 2004, all vehicles involved in this program were placed on stop delivery. After the service procedure contained in this bulletin is completed, the vehicles may be delivered to customers.conditiongeneral motors has decided that certain 2005 chevrolet tahoe and suburbans, and gmc yukon and yukon xl vehicles may have been built with an incorrect adhesive on the liftgate window molding, resulting in the possibility of the molding partially separating from the window."my concern is that this affects more years that the 2005 as there are numerous issues with 2003 - 2004 models.there are also several documented incidents of rear window detatching from the vehicle while in motion.i spoke with mr. James smith at chevroletcustomer service this evening and filed an official complaint/report.it is documented in their system as service request concern # 71-751420936.mr. Smith also said that chevrolet would be contacting the ntsb about this issue.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet suburban. While the vehicle was in the park position, the gear shifted into the neutral position unexpectedly without warning. The failure occurred once. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 148,000.

I had my 2004 chev suburban parked in my garage.my 8 years old daughter was in the back seat listening to the radio.i hadthe gear in park and the key in the accessory position so she could listen to the radio.from the back seat she reached up to turn off the radio and accidently hit the gear shift.the car went into reverse.the drives side rear door was open.when the suburban rolled out of the garage the rear door caught on the garage door keeping it from rolling into the street, into a pedestrian or into the house accross the street.there were no injuries.i notified gm product alligations department, tim miller, about the incident.he stated that this vehicle could be put into gear without using the break when the key is in the accessory position.they were not willing to look into this as being a safety issue. The owners manual suggests that you use the accessory key positioning to "let you use things like the radio, power windows and the windshield wipers when the engine is off".i think that gm needs to look at installing some type of feature that requires the brake to be engaged to shift the grear out of park even when the key is placed in the accessory position similary to standard no. 102 - transmission shift lever sequence, starter interlock, and transmission braking effect - passenger cars, multipurpose passenger vehicles, trucks, and buses(effective 1-1-68)this standard specifies the requirements for the transmission shift lever sequence, a starter interlock, and for a braking effect of automatic transmissions, to reduce the likelihood of shifting errors, starter engagement with vehicle in drive position, and to provide supplemental braking at speeds below 40 km/h (25 mph).please advise on how to proceed with installing some type of safety measures in the chev. Surban so a fatal injury does not occur.

Vehicle was able switch gears without applying brakes. As a result, the vehicle rolled down the driveway with a four year old child inside. No impact reported.

When the vehicle is placed in the accessory position, the brake does not have to be pushed on to put into gear. I was on the side of the vehicle and turned away and my 2 year old was able to climb into the front seat, put the key into the ignition and turn it to the accessory position and into gear. The vehicle rolled out the drive up on the curb, hit a mail box and since the door was opened -luckily it did not run into the house. I was under the impression that when that there was a law passed that stated you have to push on the brake to put the vehicle into gear. Luckily no one was driving down the road and hit the vehicle with my children in it. I took it to the dealership and they said it was a towing feature, i personally think this is very dangerous considering the fact that this is a common suv for people with children and it would be very easy to have this vehicle stolen. I took pictures of the vehicle and paid someone to have this fixed, however; i feel this should be a defect in the 2004 chev. Tahoe and should be covered under warranty damage. Thank you for your time and in the future if this is not recalled or fixed - i will not be purchasing another chev. Vehicle and i know several people who will not be also.

*sc

Transmission slipping.when traveling up hills the truck loses its power, even while accelerating.reported the incident to the dealership a week after i purchased the vehicle.i was informed by the dealership that they could not find a problem.i took the vehicle in 2 other times, the last time i was informed gm is aware that there is a problem with the transmission for the 2004 tahoes, however there is no fix.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving at speeds between 5 and 45 mph the vehicle stalled on 6 occasions.the vehicle would not restart and had to be towed to the dealer each time. This problem started in august 2005.on 5 occasions the dealer could not duplicate the problem however; adjustments were made to the vehicle.on the sixth occasion the dealer replaced the pcm module.

Updated

2004 chevrolet tahoe has had the following issues before 100k miles:1.replaced fuel pump2.engine overheating(taken to the dealership service dept 2x for issue)3.oil pressue - lost oil pressue4.transmission needs replaced

Dt: contact owns a 2004 chevrolet suburban. The vehicle switched into four wheel drive on its on.

2004 suburban lt with 4 wheel drive. Occaisional loss of power when turning and accelerating into traffic. Usually lasts about two seconds before power returns. This is extremely dangerous when pulling into heavy traffic. Chevrolet has replaced the fuel pump , a timing device in the transmission and an air sensor over the course of six trips to the shop. I was told yesterday that this problem is known to gm engineers as the four wheel automatically sensing a need to shift , and that there was no known fix. I have and active complaint with gm, case number 1-269747819 since 10/21/2004.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle was taken in for seat repairs, the independent mechanic discovered the driver's side seat belt was never attached to the frame.the seat belt was reattached to the frame.

Odometer failed and i was unable to determinethe speed.it cost me approximately $750.00 to repairthe 2004 tahoe.iowned several vehicles and this has never happened before.i was told by dealer that this item had to be replaced in several vehicles, but at this time therewas no recall.so i had to pay!

I was driving on the highway at 60mphwith my daughter, when the second row seat(60/40) of my 2004 surburban became unlatched and theseat flew forward. After several attempts i was able topush the seat back to it's locked position.luckily my daughter waswearing her seatbelt otherwise, she would'veinjured herself face first on rear of the passenger seat. I contacted chevrolet, and was notifiedalthough this is a safety issue, this repair isn't covered under warranty.

2004 chevy seat heater caught on fire. Called chevy they won't do anything.

I own a 2004 chevrolet suburban which i purchased new.the model i have, a z71 has power seats which have a memory option.one of the functions of the seat is called "easy exit" which has the seat travel all the way back to help make it easier to exit/enter the vehicle when the ignition key is removed.the seat seems to have a programming issue (according to my dealer) in which the seat acts inconsistent and creates a significant driving hazard.for example:the seat once or twice per week will move all the way forward and up on it's track, not responding to inputs on the side of the seat, doing it by itself.it wouldn't be that bad if it did it at just key exit/entry, but it does it while the vehicle is in motion.this regularly occurs and i feel that it is a safety hazard.i complained to my local chevrolet dealer, who said there is a "technical service bulletin" about it but chevrolet does not have a fix, other than to swap out the seat memory computer, which has been done.the seat still acts by itself.since i am 6'2", moving me all the way forward and up is not only uncomfortable, but makes it hazardous to drive since i have to wait for the seat to reach it's position before i can start to move it back.this happens weekly.i feel that it is irresponsible to have a moving seat while the vehicle is in motion, given that it compromises the driving position and quite possibly could cause an accident.it doesn't seem that chevrolet is interested in fixing the "programming issue" the module has since i've had this problem for well over a year.when the seat does this movement, it always goes to the same spot, all the way forward, all the wap up.this presses my legs and lower abdomen against the wheel, making it difficult to turn.it also presses my legs backward (at the knee) which makes breaking nearly impossible.clearly a fix should be made.according to the dealership, they have "a lot" of these complaints.

In my chevrolet suburban vin [xxx] the middle row seat on the passenger side which slides forward to allow access to the third row seat has a poorly designed latch that has come loose on several occasions while the vehicle is braking and doesn't sporadically does not latch.my wife and i have had the vehicle serviced on 11/02/2004, 11/26/2004 and 1/21/2005 and can provide service records if desired.the vehicle was also taken in on 02/25/20005,however the seat latched properly at the dealer and no invoice was issued.each service we were informed that the latch has been slighlty bent from persons (our children in this case) accessing the third row seat.we have been told that a pin bends and that the only fix is to periodically bend the pin back.this we find to be unacceptable as one is never sure when the pin is bent "enough" to allow the seat to come unlatched and thus roll forward when the car brakes.the seat rolled forward on several occasions while occupied by both children and my wifes grandmother.as one cannot depend on the seat to stay latched we no longer feel the seat is safe to use (uncontolled roll forward during an accident could be very hazardous) and no longer allow anyone to sit in that location.we have been told by the ken dixon chevrolt (dealer that has serviced the vehicle) that "latch design is the problem, latch bends if contact is made with it" (quote from srevice history in dealers computer).we are currently persuing the maryland lemon law, however would prefer to have the situation fixed.we are getting the run around from gm and were infomed by gm that this particular seat design has been discontinued. During stop and go traffic, the brakes were applied suddenly and the pedal went to the floor.the "service brake system" warning message came on as well as the brake "idiot" light.

I was driving down the road and the brake pedal went to the floor when i tried to apply the brakes.i had to repeatedly pump the brakes to get the suburban to stop.i am lucky that i was not pulling the boat when this happened.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet suburban. While driving at approximately 55 mph, the brakes did not engage when the brake pedal was depressed. The contact was able to pull over to the road side.the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that front brake lines were corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 170,000. The vin was not available.

2004 chevy suburban - sudden & complete loss of brake pressure at highway speed. Vehicle brakes were inspected in july through the va state inspection program - no issues found - today on 8/30/16 while exiting a freeway ramp at 60mph traffic came to sudden stop. When the service brake was applied in what would be considered a stab/emergency braking maneuver there was a complete and sudden loss of brake pressure - pedal went to floor without warning, brake would not pump up adequate enough to slow vehicle. I had to use a combination of parking brake application and utilizing the soft shoulder and ditch to stop the vehicle. The brake warning indicator (red) and service indicator did not illuminate until after the third or fourth application of the brake pedal. Suburban was towed. Causative factors = ruptured brake line.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that the abs warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact turned the vehicle off however, the abs continued in operation, causing the battery to drain. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 130,000. The vin was unavailable.

Started driving and within 5 min, i lost all brakes.was able to get to a local servicestation where they discovered that the brake lines had rusted and drained nearly all fluid.had lines replaced with stainless steel lines for mega bucks.rusted lines burst at one point, however, rust/corrosion was present at several points in the system.did not see any recall or notice to the defective or substandard brake lines in 2004 chevy suburbans.old lines appeared to be cheap pot metal.i am the only owner of this vehicle and have done all required maintenance.

I live near frederick, maryland and today i drove my 2004 suburban down to the cul de sac at the end of our street going around 20mph, but when i pressed the brakes, i felt them go almost to the floor, so i pumped/pressed them again twice and each time they then went fully to the floor but the truck was not stopping. I managed to put the vehicle in neutral and press the emergency brake to get the vehicle stopped with the front tires just 3 feet from my neighbors lawn. I then got out and looked under the vehicle and there was brake fluid everywhere along with a trail of it about 30-40 feet up the street from where i first pressed the brakes. I towed the truck back to my driveway and looked underneath and can see that all of the steel brake lines are heavily rusted along the frame below the drivers door area. I could see that one of the lines clearly ruptured and sprayed brake fluid everywhere. I started looking on the internet and see the same symptom/problems are already listed as under investigation for 1999-2003 chevy trucks under nhtsa action number : pe10010. Mine is a 2004 model year but it may have been built in late 2003. In any case, i was extremely lucky that it happened in my neighborhood at 20mph and not on the highway or while towing. Clearly gm has a problem and these trucks that needs to be recalled as this problem could kill people very easily!

I was driving at low speed when i pressed my foot on the brake and it went completely to the floor.looked under the vehicle and the brakeline had rusted through the line.

Backing out of a parking space went to stop and brake pedal sunk to the floor abs and brake light came on i put the truck in park opened the hood the master cylinder had fluid then looked under the truck and under the drivers side door brake fluid was leaking from 1 of the 2 steel rusted lines had the truck towed to a repair shop the shop said the 2 lines from the master cylinder to the abs block had severe corrosion and the rest of the brake lines aren't much better im sorry guys but this is a serious problem to me i could have been killed or killed someone else im one of the lucky ones i guess so now the truck is in the shop having all the brake lines changed for a cost of $ 600.00 and guess what we also own a 2003 tahoe with 90000 miles on it i guess they will have to be changed also same condition all brake lines rusted badly how many people must be seriously injured or killed before something is done about this problem its wide spread look on line how many people have gone through this its a shame make g.m do the right thing here

While driving in an urban area i noticed that my brake pedal was going down more than usual and went down even more as i waited forthe traffic signal to change. When i got home i checked the brake fluidreservoir and found the level about an inch lower than normal. I looked under the vehicle and saw a small pool of brake fluid forming on the drive under the drivers seat. Further search showed that a brake line was leaking and all the lines were badly corroded. I called a local chevy dealer and carefully drove the car to the dealership after adding fluid to the reservoir. The dealer confirmed my finding and indicated that all the lines were so badly rusted that they would probably fail soon. While the vehicle was on the lift they allowed me to see the lines in their current condition. The labor to replace the lines was $1,200.

Brake line failed due to rust corrosion. Depressed brake pedal in the driveway and brake line broke below driver's door and caused brakes to fail.

Brake line (hard line) catastrophic failure. Unable to stop on coming to highway intersection using hydraulic brakes. Had to resort to applying parking brake to stop vehicle. On inspection main brake hydraulic line ruptured- fluid spewed on roadway and approximately 1/2 of fluid from master cylinder. Limited residual pressure from secondary was unable to stop vehicle without mechanical assist from parking brake.

Brake pedal went to the floor. Cause was corroded brake line that had leaked.

Driving as normal attempt to stop and pedal went to the floor.no brakes.coasted to stop luckily not traveling at high speed.inspection revealed rusted through brake lines. And all fluid gone from master cylinder.

Abs breaks kicking in at low speed and not stopping almost wrecked several times

I was driving to pick my son up from school when i lost brakes. We barely avoided an accident and had to swerve off the road to avoid the vehicle in front of us stopping at the light. I had just redone my front and rear brakes/rogers. After inspecting the brake lines we noticed my lines are completely rusted and will not hold any fluid. I live in florida. No snow, no salt on my roads. It disgusts me that gm isn't taking care of this known issue. This is my 4th suburban and will be my last. I will now be looking toward the ford, toyota, or nissan suv. Gm should be making this right. Maybe after a few more deaths they'll see how serious this is. How many deaths do they need on their hands to see it's a problem? absolutely disgusts me!

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet suburban. While driving 25 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and the brakes seized. The service brakes warning indicator illuminated after the brake failure. The contact stated that the emergency brake was engaged in order to stop the vehicle. The contact also stated that brake fluid was leaking under the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the brake lines failed due to corrosion and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 114,000.

Went to back out of the driveway, brake pedal went to the floor, no brakes had to take extreme steps to stop the vehicle and all i was doing was backing out of a flat driveway onto the street.towed vehicle to auto shop - brake lines before safety valve broke causing the entire braking system to fail. Previously i had a brake line burst, however it was post the safety valve which allowed me to stop safely. The lines busting before the safety valve is extremely dangerous and would have resulted in severe injuries had we been driving down the road at normal driving speeds.gm has an issue and prior to this i was not happy with them saying it isn't an issue, now that it broke in a place that does not have any safety mechanism i consider it extremely poor of gm to cover their face and say there isn't an issue.

The hydro booster is defective. The car triggers my breaks and makes noises make steering braking difficult. It happens everyfay throught the day while im driving

The brake lines on my suburban were rotted (i did not know this until after) and they ruptured while i was on the highway towing a trailer. I only avoided a crash by downshifting and using my ebrake. This is a widespread issue from searching the web and i am shocked this is not already a recall.

Headed out on a quick trip into town. As i turned off of thestreet i live on i came to a stop sign and as i went to hit the brakes they went all the way to the floor and i could not stop my vehicle in time. I was lucky because i was going downhill at the time but as luck would have it, no cars were at the stop sign and i was able to go through the stop sign and turn left onto an uphill road and let gravity stop my vehicle. Had this had happened once i hit the busy street i was headed to it would have killed someone else as well as myself!i have read that this problem has been reported and no recall from chevrolet... That is just a crime, in my opinion!

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that the vehicle was experiencing the same failure as listed in nhtsa campaign number: 04v045000 (service brakes, hydraulic). There were no warning indicators illuminated. An independent mechanic diagnosed that the brake booster system needed to be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer and dealer were not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 192,000.

The brakes on my 2004 chevrolet suburban 2500 failed during an attempted stop.the pedal traveled all the way to the floor. Subsequent testing of the brakes revealed that there was at least one brake fluid leak from lines leaving the master cylinder which was spraying brake fluid onto the engine causing smoking.the vehicle was towed to a chevrolet dealership for repair and i was told that the brake lines had corroded through causing loss of brake fluid and loss of braking capability.it was stated by the dealership that this corrosion was due to road conditions where salt is used on the roads for winter driving.the vehicle had approximately 42,000 miles on it when the brake failure occurred.the cost of the repair was approximately $2,500.the vehicle has never been used for snow plowing or spreading road salt.

Brake line failed while towing boat on city street normal braking lost 3/4 braking power, pedal went almost to the floor, just stopped in time before rear ended someone.

Obvious corrosion on brake lines of2004 chevy suburban. By just applying the brake for few times, the brake fluid is gushing underneath the driver side (between the front and rear wheels). Also notice rusting brake lines up to the engine hood (this thing should definitely not happened, i never had a problem like this before in any vehicle i had owned, brake lines should last even beyond the lifetime of the vehicle!). I also informed chevy (tel: 800-222-1020)about this life safety failure, this is a very serious defect and chevy must issue a recall on this corrosion problem on brake lines.

While avoiding another vehicle i applied my brakes suddenly. The bake like connecting the abs unit and the rear brakes failed due to corrosion/rust that was not observable due to the line being ran between the vehicles frame and body and gas tank. Although this location might have made for easy manufacturing it has led to the line being in a location that cannot be visually inspected to prevent dangerous conditions from building up from lack of awareness. .

While driving in heavy morning rush hour traffic on a northern virginia interstate, brakes were applied for typical traffic slowdown.after releasing the brake, the warning light alerting driver of a brake issue came on.at that point, i tested the brake and the peddle sunk to the floor while quickly loosing braking resistance.i was able to pull over and stop the vehicle within about a mile.looked underneath the drivers side and saw brake fluid leaking/dripping out of the brake line which was ruptured.had to call a tow truck to take this to a shop for replacement of all of the brake lines.all of the lines were corroded.checked online and saw that this was a "typical" issue affecting 2004 chevy suburbans but that a product recall was not issued yet.i was thankful that this did not happen the previous day when my 16 yr old daughter drove the car to school.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated the driver was traveling 10 mph when the brakes were depressed and the vehicle failed to stop properly. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired and the vin was unknown. The failure and current mileage was 112,000.

While driving brakes failed when trying to make a sudden stop.driver avoided a collision by continuing to slam on the brake pedal until the vehicle stopped.vehicle was towed to the dealer, who determined the cam shaft position sensor was the cause of the brake failure.

While applying the brake pedal, the vehicle failed to stop completely.the consumer drove to the dealer for an inspection.the cause has not been determined at this time. Please provide further details.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet suburban.while driving approximately 35 mph, the steering wheel required greater effort to turn.there was a low power response when the brake pedal was depressed.in addition, the service brake booster warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection.the vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign id number 05v043000 (service brakes, hydraulic), although the failures were identical.the failure and current mileages were 23,400.updated 08/28/09.*ljupdated 08/31/09.

Dt*: the contact stated while traveling 5 mph, the power steering failed, then both feet were used to stop the vehicle.it was taken to an independent repair shop who determined the power steering and brake booster system failed and both components were replaced.

After taking 90-degree right turn from street into parking lot the ability to steer and brake 2004 chevrolet suburban was lost, although forward motion was still possible (i.e. The vehicle did not stall).after restarting vehicle forward motion was possible but steering and braking were still not working.upon a second restart steering and braking were restored, although some lights on the instrument panel flickered.the vehicle was towed to appleway chevrolet in spokane, wa.the service department at the dealership initially indicated there was no problem with the vehicle because they could not reproduce the defective behavior.subsequently, the service department was instructed to keep the vehicle until the problem is identified and resolved.

While approaching a stop sign, i tried to brake and the pedal went to the floor.no brakes!!i was able to coast to a stop.upon checking, all brake fluid was gone and the brake lines were rotted through.all brake lines had to be replaced along with the front calipers.corrosion was the problem with the lines and calipers.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet suburban. While parked, the driver depressed the brake pedal but the brakes would not respond. The parking brake was applied in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The technician advised the contact that the brake lines had corroded from the inside and would have to be replaced along with the brake pads and rotors. The vehicle was repaired. *sc

Brakes failed to slow 2004 suburban during low speed braking in wet weather causing a collision. Abs module is not working correctly in wet environment during a hard stop. I have owned several suvs and have never seen this problem in the others.i have the full dump of the obd speed plots just prior to the crash.

Update to prior complaint based on additional information. Have discussed this with d boyd. 2004 suburban failed to slow during hard stop between 40 and 20 mph. I believe that my original conclusion is probably accurate given that the 2004 cadillac srx abs ecu and the international abs ecu failures were within the time period my suburban was manufactured. This happened once before and occurs during wet conditions after two consecutive brake attempts. Gm is stone walling me but i'd like to handle this without getting clarence ditlow @ the center for auto safety further involved.i've had problems with hendrick chevy for almost a year now including a defective engine on 1996 tahoe, defective brakes, suspect emissions testing dtc p302 cylinder 2 misfire, possible incorrect transmission replacement, possible failure to replace passenger seat which i believe was recalled and posed a danger for almost 4 years, dex cool gasket blow out, steering column lockup etc. I requested a police report from the nc dot and for some strange reason it's not on file although i have the receipt from the officer. While driving at approximately 25 mph driver applied the brakes and brake pedal went to the floor. This problem happenedintermittently.owner took vehicle to the dealer, and left it there for repairs. When the owner picked up the vehicle he wasinformed that they could not duplicate the problem.this problem also occurred while stopped and waiting for stop lights to change.

Update to complaint 10098773. Brakes failed to stop 2004 suburban during hard stop at under 40 mph. Lost power assist and some steering capabilities. Felt like the rotors were defective. Brake pedel was firm but would not slow. Impact @ around 20mph cause over $10,000 damage including a bent frame. I had a davis instrumentscarchip reader recording several metrics including speed. Car was new in august with less than 8,000 miles. I have all the carchip logs for this car from around the time i acquired it. Had problems with the dealer from day one due to suspect repairs on an earlier vehicle which had emissions and transmissions problems. Dealer conviced me to trade up once they realized that they could not fix the old car after multiple attempts between march and july 2004. 22 year collision free driving record. Electrical engineer with 18 years experience in hardware and software including military weapons systems, operating systems, networking and telecommunications.i have never encountered this type of problem with any other car i have owned. Called gm 11/18/04. No response yet. Mechanic found a service bulletin recall 04v045000 - possible hydro-boost defect which matches the decription i explain. Some one needs to get in front of this issue before a more serious accident occurs. I have a 2 year old son who thankfully was not in the car at the time.

Under warranty, brought car in for loose, vibrating steering wheel in 2006. Dealership brought to our attention the need to replace a bolt on the steering shaft, was a warranty repair covered by gm and we did not have to pay (issued as recommended repair only if consumer brought to attention. Problem went away. Problem recurred in fall 2008 (car now out of warranty) identical symptoms as before. Contacted dealership again to complain, they stated, out of warranty have to pay for new part replacement. Feel this is a flawed engineered component on vehicle from start, should not have to pay for something that is not safe in the first place.

The steering column has some flaw in it causing a loose connection on the collapsible shaft.ge is claiming that a "corrected or revised" shaft is the fix but they are not currently paying for the "fix".this is a 2004 chevy. Suburban

The hydro booster is defective. The car triggers my breaks and makes noises make steering braking difficult. It happens everyfay throught the day while im driving

Original date was in 2005 when i complained regarding the clicking noise when steering wheel is being turned to the left. Service personnel stated they had lubricated the steering wheel bolts.well after receiving the vehicle back on 12/01/06 for 30k mile inspection the clicking noise is now back, but worse when reversing not only has the clicking noise returned, but when reversing having my steering wheel turn left i can feel the tires sliding.after talking to same personnel in servicing she is being told not to lubricate or loosen the bolts of the steering wheel since it will not improve the situation.according to the service personnel she just received (01/04/06) a notice stating that chevrolet is working on the problem unfortunately they (chevrolet/gmac) will go back to the drawing board to make a part that will fix this problem.i explained to veronica of my fears of driving the vehicle, but she states that the vehicle is safe.i did notify the service personnel as well as the owner of the dealership (where the work is being done and was purchased from) that my fear of having to make an immediate left turn or reversing having the steering wheel turned left what is the guarantee that the tires will not slide maybe hitting something from behind.both service personnel and the owner of the dealership states that chevrolet would not say it was safe for someone to drive when in fact it isn't.nothing can be done regarding this issue since there is no part on the market to fix this problem.my complaint is basically i feel that since there isn't a part currently made to repair the problem making a left turn or reversing that this vehicle is unsafe for me and my five children.

New 2004 suburban has the steering column and shift lever unlocked when vehicle keyis put into accesory position with no shift interlock intervention. 1st night home with vehicle in the driveway and examining vehicle features my 2 year sold shifted vehicle into neutral causing vehicle to roll backwards in driveway!!!!

The rear window lift hinge attached to the glass to the tailgate is defective.after researching this hinge online, i located several with the same problem.this could cause several problems if the glass were to separate during travel and should be a huge safety concern for chevrolet.the estimated repair cost is $1,300.00 for a defective part that will just re-occur with in a few years as some of the complainants observed online by new owners of 2 years.this part is defective and not due to normal wear and tare.

I received a letter dated july 2, 2012 that indicated that the tires i previously purchased from pepboys were defective and could blow apart while driving.the tires had dot serial number ut t6 pa7.so, i took the letter and vehicle back to pepboys but they were not aware of the recall.in any event, they did replace all four tires free of charge.however, it seems that are still selling the defective tires becase the tires they installed on my vehicle, for the second time, had dot serial ut t6 pa7.so, it appears that i am still driving on the highway with defective tires.

Cracked dash, never removed, garage kept. Cracked runs through dash from front window towards radio cluster. Dash has sharp pieces that in accident can easily be broken off.

On my 2004 chevy suburban the housing unit for the spare tire will not release the spare tire to come down, so you can fix a flat.i believe this is a safety issue because if you can't get the spare tire down, you can't change the flat--& you will be stuck on the highway with children--we had never used the spare tire before--but when we needed it, it was inoperable.

Tachometer/speedometer failed on 2004 chevorlet suburban.provided unsafe driving conditions, especiallyduring bad weather conditions where vehicle speed was at an all time importance.small children in the vehicle caused thedriver to be more anxious at the wheel, not knowing exactly how fast the vehicle was going on the highway or residential street traffic.

Thespeedometer has gone out. I haveread many entries on a website that thiswa s an ongoing problem with chevrolettahoes., and the price to get it fixed rangedfrom $400 to $1000. That wasa bitto expensive. I think there needs to bea recall . This car is only 3 years old. This shouldn't be happening.

The engine light would come on and immediately the stability system disengage light would come on also.the vehicle would go down to approximately 1500 rpm and drop the speed to 50-55 mph, on the freeway.the speed limit is 65 and we were in the middle lane of 3 lanes.it has happened numerous times now.i have taken the vehicle to a mechanic 3 times.a diagnostic test was ran each time and every time there different codes that pop up, one different from the previous.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle speedometer displayed an incorrect reading on the dash panel gauge.the incorrect display was constant and favored no particular speed.however the most common evidence of this problem was while driving at a low speed the gauge displayed an outrageously high speed. The dealer and manufacturer have been contacted.

While opening the lift gate, the glass detached from the hinge. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, but it was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 79,000.

Our family was not home, the car has been parked in the driveway as normal. My neighbors were in the yard and suddenly heard what sounded like an explosion.they looked over and the rear window had shattered and blew the gate open.it also melted the plastic that holds the glass. It seems as if possibly the rear defroster may have been faulty although the vehicle has not been moved in 3 days.glad someone was not standing behind it.it blew glass about 10 ft. Heard rattle and a wind noise as if a door or window was partially open.rear liftgate glass passenger side hinge partially separated from window glass, allowing the strut which lifts the window up normally to push the top edge of the window up about an inch. What makes this dangerous is that if at highway speed, the wind could have easily caught the lifted glass edge and stress it enough to shatter and injure someone or damage a following vehicle.

Rear tailgate glass has separated from the glued on hinges and dropped down on the drivers side. This appears to be an ongoing design, quality issue and has happened on a large number of suv style chevrolet vehicles as can be seen using a simple internet search concerning this issue.

Also when my speed ometer doesn't work my rear dfog and wiper do work.when my rear defog and wiper don't work my speedometer does work.i checked all the fuses in all three fuse boxes and none are blown.
