I was driving my friend to work in ok 4/30/14.. Dt: vehicle was in an accident at 5000 miles, and now the air bag light keeps coming on. Chevy fixed it 3 times, and it still keeps coming on. The last time, they replaced everything to do with the air bags. At first gm said the air bag defect had nothing to do with the accident that it was a manufacturers defect, and now they say it is because of the accident. It is very unsafe. In addition, the passenger and middle front seatbelts require an extension because they are too short, and so it is unsafe.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban.the contact was starting the vehicle when the air bags deployed independently.the vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where they were in the process of diagnosing the failure. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The failure and current mileage was 124,000.

Service air bag popped up on display. No damage had been done and it showed up one day but then it would go off after i started driving through the neighborhood at low speeds. Next time i turned it on it wasn't on the dash at all. It came back the next day and then it has not turned off at all while the car is on. Was not sure if there were any recalls on it but none were found. In the past both of my subarus has this same service sign pop up and both were recalled.

While drivingat any speedair bag warning light continuously illuminates on the dash board. As a result the air bags became inoperative and wouldn't deploy when needed. Dealershipreplaced every air bag component, but the problem recurred.

The consumer was involved in an accident where it was hit from the front driver side, the impact caused the vehicle to hit a telephone pole head on.the air bags did not deploy.

Airbag light came on and off. After 10,000 miles consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, and they were unable to repair vehicle. Currently, they were telling the consumer that they were going to replace the sensor and diagnostic module.the parts were on order. This problem occurred 3 weeks after the vehicle was purchased with 23,000 miles on it.

Consumer noticed a wire burning smell, and air bag indicator service light started flashing.

I was driving my suburban when a message reading "reduced engine power" came on and my car cut off.i was very lucky to only be going 20 mph in my neighborhood.had i been going faster and had a car been following close behind, we would have caused an accident.this problem still persists and stops every 2-3 miles.we have to pull over, leave the car off for 5-10 seconds and then restart.we are then able to go another 2-3 miles.this is our only vehicle so we have no choice but to drive with our hazards on because we have 4 kids at 3 different schools to drop off and pick up each day.after researching this issue online, i am seeing that this is occurring in hundreds of chevrolet and gm cars.it is my understanding that these 2 are the same company.i do not dare get on a major highway or interstate because of the fear of the car shutting down and causing an accident.chevrolet and gm are aware of this problem, as many people have filed complaints with both the company and the nhtsa.why is there no recall to fix this?this is a very dangerous situation and could likely lead to a deadly accident.i am discussing a class action lawsuit with a number of people and once the info is collected, i will contact an attorney.please help get these unsafe vehicles off of the road and into the dealerships to be fixed.thank you.

All gauges in instrument cluster went low or no reading, including speedometer, fuel, tachometer, temp.the repair was done at willie's auto repair inc.at 901 s. Cliff ave.in sioux falls, sd.the gm remanufactured instrument cluster part was $453 and labor was $126, with tax the totalcost of the repair was $613 which gm should be paying for !!i know several people at work that have had to have this done to their gm trucks and tahoes, suburbans.this is so widespread there should be a class action suit !!you know the component they replace can't be much on a board in these "remanufactured clusters"gm needs to replace these at their expense !!!

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated the all gauges on the instrument panel have stopped working. The digital and mechanical gauges failed and the contact does not know how much gas was in the vehicle or how fast they were traveling. The contact stated that the light in the gear shift indicator failed first. The vehicle was not inspected, but the contact was concerned that the failure was a wiring problem. The failure mileage was 99,000 and the current mileage was 103,000.

I have 2003 suburban 1500, that keeps getting a error message "reduce engine power". The vehicle will all of sudden while driving, reduce speed and i can't accelerate above 25-30mph. I will have to pull over and turn car off for 10-15 seconds before it resets, however it will continue to happen over and over again! it is very scary and dangerous when i have my kids or my wife drive it because you never know when the car will have this happen. Strangely, when we drive on the highway we can use the "cruise control" feature when we reach 25mph and use the cruise control to accelerate that way with minimal occurrences. I have taken the car to "2 chevy dealers and 3 mechanics" neither can tell us what's wrong! this is frustrating because we only have on car, and we know this a "safety hazard" and extremely dangerous and somebody has to look into this! i only hope someone who reads these complaints has the power to help me and everyone with this problem.

Speedometer gauge stopped working. Would register as going 20 mph or even up to 80 mph when parked. Occasionally would appear to track then would register significantly too high or too low (usually too high). Dropped off at dealer & told it needed instrument panel cluster replacement but was on back order nationwide. Called gm customer assistance who confirmed with the dealer that it is a "high failure item". Initial attempt at replacing ipc failed, still awaiting another new part & hoping to get vehicle back soon.

My suburbangoes to reduced power unexpectedly and the engine will stall causing a loss of power steering andcontrol of the vehicle. My suburban has been taken in to the dealer i purchased the vehicle from on five occasions and the dealer is unable to fix the problem.. The most recent time was 9/1/2011. It went to reduced power 10 miles after leaving dealership and stalled as i pulled out into traffic from a restaurant. A number of cars had to brake excessively and swerve around me until i could angle my suburban off the road without power steering. The truck weighs 6700 lbs and i needed all my strength to turn the wheel enough to get off the road. I am fearful about driving my suburban and the high probability of injury to myself or others.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban.the same day the vehicle was purchased, the contact attempted to apply the parking brake and the vehicle rolled forward.the vehicle has been to the repair shop three times and each time the mechanic stated that everything was fine.the emergency brake has not worked since the vehicle was purchased.the current mileage was 62,000 and failure mileage was 1.the consumer stated the sunroof leaked, a blown fuse was replaced. The temperature gauge in the rear view mirror was inoperative, the dealer tightened the connection, there was a rattle coming from thee left side of the vehicle when going over bumps in the road. Updated 10/24/07.

Saturday, i was driving approximately 45 to 50 mph on a split two lane road to pick up my grandchildren and all of a sudden my instrument panel stopped working.all gauges went to 0.there was no digital readings either.it just went dead.pulled over and turned the vehicle off and back on, nothing changed.plugged my garmin gps in for my speed guide and filled my gas tank so i knew that it was full.called mechanic to bring vehicle in for him to check out on tuesday.tuesday,(today) on my way to work, driving on 4 lane interstate, 60 to 70 mph, all of a sudden, all of the gauges and digital readings came on and began working correctly.i still took my vehicle to the mechanic, he stated that he will look at it and call me later.i depend on my car, just like everyone else.i can not just go out and buy a new one every time something goes wrong.i pray that this does not cause an accident.i transport my grandchildren and worry about their safety. I am a safety director and safety is very passionate to me. There must be something that can be done about this issue.i love my suburban and plan on purchasing another one some day. It has always been a very dependable vehicle but this issue has me spooked.

My 2003 chevy suburban's speedometer and volt meter indicate wildly false readings. I never know how fast i am really driving and i don't know if my electrical system is really at 30 volts or 0. I believe this is an unsafe condition.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. While driving at 50 mph, the gauges on the instrument panel failed. A month later, the failure recurred and all the meters, gauges, and warning lights on the instrument cluster panel failed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 125,000.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that the instrument panel failed and was providing inaccurate readings. As a result, the contact was not able to determine the speed in which he was traveling. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the instrument cluster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and stated that there were no recalls for the vehicle. The failure mileage was 90,000. The vin was unavailable.

I am a teacher and got a call in my classroom that my suburban was on fire parked in the parking lot.the fire department was called and when i got outside, sure enough there was smoke all in the suburban and smoke coming from the roof of the vehicle (not the hood).when the fire department arrived, they entered the vehicle, disconnected the battery, and proceeded to tear out my rear headliner to extinguish the electrical fire that was occurring.my insurance company had the vehicle towed and it was deemed reparable, which i was not too happy about seeing as we don't really know the cause of the fire beyond electrical.the fire originated near the rear dome light and burned the headliner and melted the paint off the roof thevehicle.the location of the fire was not a in a place where any mechanic could check to have prevented this from occurring and i am concerned about the safety of the vehicle moving forward.i am not in a financial position to afford a new suburban and do love mine, but am now just concerned.i am thankful no one was in the vehicle and that no one was hurt.. But had a parent dropping a kid off to school not noticed the smoke coming off the roof of my car in the parking lot, things could have been much worse.i had also just filled my tank up the day before so the car was sitting with 30 gallons of gasoline in it.i am also thankful that i was not trying to scramble to get my 4 kids out of the car (and yes we do use the 3rd row seat daily).i think this incident needs to be looked at to prevent any other owner of a 2003 suburban from having a similar experience.there were no recalls on my vehicle that would have lead to this issue.

Consumer noticed a wire burning smell, and air bag indicator service light started flashing.

Vehicle is 2003 chevrolet suburban, purchases new. Speedometer won't read correctly; at first it would read 20-30 mph fast; then it finally only reads between 30-120 mph; had same problem with gas gauge; ran out of gas with tank showing almost half full, in an area with no cell phone reception.very dangerous.dangerous to not be able to determine your actual speed.gm refuses to cover this problem, even though dealer has had several instances of these failures. Gm must be aware of problem, but refuses to acknowledge.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that the interior lighting, onstar device power in the rearview mirror, fan motor, and door locks lost power intermittently. The failures recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that an electrical short in the dashboard needed to be repaired. The failure was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

Dt: the consumer owns a 2003 chevy suburban. The consumer stated that shehad the vehicle in the shop at least once a month since she purchased the vehicle november 12, 2003. The electrical system has been going bad,the feature record showed it was reprogramming it self, shutting her car off after she started it, unlocking the doors by itself. She almost hit someone because the vehicle accelerated by itself. She also states that the last time it was in the shop her rpms went up to 3000. The dealership said they couldn't duplicate the problem.the dealership has spoken to the gm specialist and they could not help either.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. At various times, the ignition switch failed and all the warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 225,000.

I have a 2003 z71 suburban. The speedometer broke today all of a sudden, said i was driving 60mph when i was barely doing 25. When i shut the car off it remained at 30mph. I called the chevy dealer and they knew right away what the problem was and how much to fix it. $600.00. Now i know why, after reading the complaints on here. Everybody has the same problem. My truck has 91,000 miles on it. Why won't gm repair this regardless of how many miles the vehicles have on it. A defect is a defect, regardless of what the mileage is when it occurs! let's see, food in my kids mouth and a roof over their heads, or $600.00 to repair my defective truck. No wonder why gm is going under. I know i will never buy another gm vehicle. You people should do something. I see there a tons of complaints for the same thing. This obviously is a safety issue.

Dt*:the contact stated the vehicle looses power intermittently.the first time this occurred, the dealership determined a rodent had chewed through the wires.the wires were replaced.the second time this occurred, the dealership determined a clip was loose.the third time, the battery had just been charged and after driving for 40 minutes the vehicle lost all power.the vehicle would not restart, so it was jumped.the vehicle lost power again and would only travel at 10-15 mph.the vehicle was towed to the dealership.the dealership checked the battery and alternator, but determined both components were in good condition.the dealership was unable to duplicate the problem and no codes were present.

Initial attempt at replacing.same as other complaints that i have read.i was also told that the replacement of this is expensive.

The rear lift tailgate and window will not unlock when using the remote key button, or when using the unlock button on the drivers door arm rest.there is no manual key lock for the rear lift tailgate or window, nor any inside button to manually unlock the tailgate.when sleeping in the rear of the suburban you have do way to exit the car except by climbing over seats and exiting using the front doors.driving the car and stopping to try to unlock the rear lift gate will eventually allow you to unlock the tailgate, some times after many tries.also it some times will unlock when alternating between the driver door unlock button and the remote unlock button.this could be a dangerous problem .this failure of the rear tailgate is a common problem with suburbans.this link provides more information on this problem:" http://www.chefseattle.com/blog/site-news/suburban-rear-liftgate-wont-unlock-how-to-fix/ "

The 2003 chevy suburban has an intermittent, recurring issue with the cluster that causes it to short out. There are many examples of this problem from other customers listed on the internet. In my personal experience, this problem results in electronic failures that present themselves in these ways:1) the speedometer either fails to operate or displays the max speed.2) when turning off the vehicle, the radio will automatically turn on and begin playing as your exiting the vehicle3) when placing the key in the ignition, the automatic seat will begin moving by itself, does not remember the previous settings and will force you into the steering wheel. I could not stop the seat from jamming me into the steering wheel.when i contacted the dealership, they knew exactly what the problem was without even looking at the car. The reason they know about it is because they have replaced so many of them already.when i contacted gm, all they would do is offer me a one time service of $200 which would not apply to fixing the faulty cluster.

I'm filing a complaint because of an issue with the instrument panel cluster.my car has had this issue for the past few months.anytime the car goes over bumps(no matter how big or small the bump is, it could just be a crack in the cement)the gauges on the dash will go crazy, sensors will so off.specifically the speedometer will stop working or go all the way to 120 mph.the fuel and oil gauges will not be accurate (for example it will say the tank is empty when it's full).but the most disturbing problem is that while driving no matter how fast the anti theft will go off and shut the engine off in a matter of seconds and the car loses all power.a few times i have been driving 55 mph on the expressway and it will just shut off.so far i have been lucky enough not to get rear ended, i don't know when my luck will run out.there was a recall on the car for this problem but it was only until 2010 or if the odometer was between 70,001 and 80,000 miles.my car is eight years old and over 100,000 miles.we bought this car used in 2009 from a chevy dealership (dick wickstrom's chevrolet).when we talked to the dealership about this and complained that it wasn't fixed when they had it, they said it wasn't having problems at that time. It will cost approximately $600 to $800 to fix.i don't have the money to fix it or to buy another car so i must continue to drive a defective unsafecar. If a part is defective how can that expire.gm should be responsible for the safety of the cars they sell and to fix any defective parts no matter how old the car is. I hope that you can help us as i need a dependable safe car and can't afford to buy another one or pay out the kind of money it will take to fix this one when i feel this should have been taken care of by the manufacturer because it is a part that was defective no matter how long it took to go bad.thank you.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that while driving 50 mph, the instrument panel failed. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the instrument cluster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the contact stated that every electrical component failed in due to poor grounding. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 348.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle had keyless entry and the power supply failed, which resulted in no way to get in or out of the vehicle.the contact expressed concern that if someone was to be inside the vehicle when the power supply failed, they would not be able to exit the vehicle and could cause a life threatening concern.

Consumer stated that all four doors don't work properly.radio is not working as well. While driving, all gauge warning lights continuously illuminates the dash board. Dealer replaced. Alternator, radio twice, door electrical system. The dash board including the gaugesand still persist the problem intermittently.*la

My electric is all messed up ,works don't,radio turns on after driving awhile,4x4 sometimes works, airbag light ,they wanted 150 to reset,i talk to so many same problem, same year ,online,i bet there is recall ,there must be i paid a lot for this truck to,when get cold out wont start, nothing works,i'm disabled,so it's hard for me to do anything,it's all about money,so many with same problem online.

Vehicle suddenly started going into reduced power mode and providing an error code indicating a problem with the throttle control sensor. From the hundreds of online posts (some by gm mechanics) this is an ongoing problem with many 2003-2008 trucks and suvs made by gm. When i began trying to repair this problem myself, i found out from my local chevy parts department that "they can not keep these throttle control assemblies in stock because we are replacing so many of them..." there seems to be a know problem that gm is not adequately being proactive about. This happens while driving highway, local streets and at startup. This becomes a serious safety issue when the vehicle goes into reduced power mode while the vehicle is in traffic.

The issue started with the drivers memory seat not remembering the seat position and the easy exit pushed the seat forward in to the steering wheel instead of back.then came the issue with the speedometer.i received the letter identifying this problem however like so many other people my vehicle has more than 70,000 miles and although it has been identified as a problem gm will not consider it a recall and i would have to pay to have it fixed.this is obviously a wide spread problem that gm should fix free of charge no matter the mileage.my husband also has the same issue with his 2005 3/4 ton silverado.

Revving of engine to point of screeching tires. Sometimes feeling of being in neutral for a second then clunk in tranny/rear end? acts as engagement of cruise control increasing speed, not able to disengage by hitting brake.computer did not show anything.next time putter "locked out" tech's. Puter replaced.worked good for two weeks.engine revved, hit patch of ice, totaled out z-71.thank god, no injuries.fighting it for appx 16000 miles. 72000 to 88000.

I was driving my suburban back from work one day and my front a/c blower stopped working. I turned a/c off and reached home. When i took the plastic cover over the blower motor apart to see what is going on i figured that the electrical connector to the blower motor resister has heated up and melted. I replaced the blower motor resister thinking something was wrong with that only to find out it happened again 15 days later. I searched the problem online and found that yet another engineering disaster by gm. It appears to be a known problem in gm trucks. For some reason the blower motor resister is overheating and melting the plastic connector and wires connecting to it. This is a fire hazard. I called up a chevy dealership near me to find out if there was any recall on this they said no. Hence reporting this to you.

2003 chevy suburban speedometer has been experiencing issues since i purchased used over 2 years ago. But it outside of the manufacturers warranty period. So i decided to leave it until it stopped working all together. I was notified that from chevy that this an issue fall of 07, but by that time the vehicle had already surpassed the mileage restraint that gm put on the recall. Now the speedometer stopped working today. The speedometer is stuck at 70, and is not reading correctly. I called my dealer and they told me to call chevrolet. After stating my case to the first representative i was told there was nothing we could do.

The speedometer indicates incorrect speeds.shows i am going 30 mph sitting still or 120 mph while driving 65mph.

Speedometer failure.

2003 chevy suburban, while driving steady @ at approximately65 mph, speedometer became erratic, indicating 0 mph; slowed to 55 and exited highway.shut engine off and speedometer went to 55 mph and remained.stared engine and indicator went to 30 mph.all other indications and gauges seemed to indicate normal.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban.while driving at various speeds, the instrument control panel failed, and the fuel gauge became inoperative and displayed inaccurate readings.the dealer stated that because the vehicle exceeded 70,000 miles, the contact would have to pay for the repairs.the vehicle has not been repaired.the contact filed a formal complaint with the manufacturer.the failure mileage was 54,000 and current mileage was 96,000.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated the instrument cluster inadvertently disabled. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the instrument cluster needed to be replaced, but was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failurethe failure mileage was 85,000. Updated 02/14/17*ljconsumer stated techometer, oil pressure gauge. Gear indicator lights offer lights stopped working. Updated 7/16/18

Speedometer in the instrument cluster failed on my suburban z71 model year 2003 with 59,611 miles.speedometer readings ranged from 0 mph to 120 mph.i had to use a gps to regulate vehicle speed until the truck could be repaired.i had the instrument cluster remove and repair on february 12, 2007 by dealer at a cost of $448.89 and only a 1 year guarantee on the replacement cluster.the dealer has indicated that this is a common problem with the vehicle.

I have a 2003 chevrolet suburban with the instrument panel acting erratic.it states that i have 0 oil pressure and that i am doing 100 mph when i am actually doing 40 mph.the tachometer is sticking at 2.1 rpm.i have searched the internet for solutions and have ran into thousands of posting the same problems with gm vehicles. Who should i send all of my speeding tickets to?

I could not stop the seat from jamming me into the steering wheel.when i contacted the dealership, they knew exactly what the problem was without even looking at the car. The reason they know about it is because they have replaced so many of them already.when i contacted gm, all they would do is offer me a one time service of $200 which would not apply to fixing the faulty cluster.

Speedometer started going crazy. Now reads 25 when in park.

I bought the suburban new in 2003 and as i was driving it home off the lot, i looked down at the speedometer and it was showing "0."i was, at the time, driving down the highway!i pulled off the side of the road and stopped, called the dealership and they said that if it did it again to call them.it did not do it again until today.i have been noticing, though, for a few weeks that the speedometer is clicky when it goes up in speed, it is not a smooth movement, it jumps or clicks up.then, the other day, i was driving home and looked down and the speedometer was at "0" again.as i proceeded to drive and accelerate and slow down, it was giving erroneous readings.i called gm but there was no recall on this, but there has been recalls on it, "juse not on mine."

Speedometer sticks cant ever tell what speedi am traveling at.this seems to be a common problem why wont they recall them!

The speedometer on my 2003 chevy suburban is off by over 50 mph. I had the same problem on 2005 silverado.i see alot of complaints over this same problem with other owners, why is gm not held responsible for a recall. There is no way to know how fast i am actually going, if that is not a safety concern then i'm not sure what is.

The instrument cluster on my vehicle quit working when my 2003 chevy suburban had about 48600 miles on it. I contacted a friend with a dealership and he told me it was a common problem and wiuld cost about $500 tp get it fixed.i recently received the recall letter but now have too many miles to qualify.

Speedometer quits registering speed of vehicle at times, the odometer continues to work. Next time driving vehicle speedometer works.dealer said this is a very common occurrence and eventually the speedometer will quit and i will have to buy a new one.i do feel that a non working speedometer is a safety issue.

2003 chevy suburban with speedometer problems. Consumer states she received a notice for a voluntary repair but the vehicle had too many miles on it. Consumer is very upset that there was not a recall for this repair.the consumer stated for over 3 years, she has had an intermittent problem with the speedometer.

Speedometer goes to 120 randomly.

2003 chevrolet suburban. Speedometer worked erratically and now it just sits on 0 regardless of the speed being travelled. Started at around 25,000 miles. Complaint seems to be common among other gm suv owners. Requesting pressure to be put on gm to declare a recall.

My speedometer on my chevy suburban is malfunctioning.i can't tell how fast i am really going - pretty dangerous if you ask me!

The fuel gauge quit first, then the speedometer. There is a knocking sound in the steering column when a turn is made.

2003 suburban z71 speedometer fails to read properly. Usually shows slower than actual speed.

Periodically our car's gas gauge and speedometer stick.it is intermittent and we cannot find a connection as to when/where.we recently received a letter from chevy recognizing there is a defect in their manufacturing but also includes a refusal to fix our suburban because it has more than 70,000 miles on it.this is a safety issue and should fall under a mandatory recall.cars have to be able to know how fast they are going and if they have enough fuel to get there.

Speedometer randomly goes 5 to 50 miles faster than actual speed of the car.i checked it with a gps--if it goes off speed, it has read as high as 40 mph at a standstill and as high as 120 mph at 70 mph.

Speedometer failure. The speedometer on my 2003 chevrolet suburban does not register the correct speed.it either does not move at all or randomly jumps from 0 to 120 or off the register and then may get stuck in any position for lengthy periods of time.

Speedometer has erratic operation.shows a speed of 70 mph when actually going 56.parked in driveway shows speed of 35 mph.

Speedometer head catastrophicallyfailed.it was bouncing all around reading 0 then 120 mph. I had my wife immediately drop it off at the service vendor closest to her (not chevy ).they analyzed the problem and determined that the speedometer head was faulty.i calledthe service manager at fischer chevrolet in boulder and confirmed the diagnosis.i asked the service manager if they had seen others like this from this year.he said he had seen a larger number of failures of this type.i asked the price for replacement.he said it would be nearly twice that of the 3rd party service company. I chose to have it fixed and submit the complaint to chevy/gm

2003 chevrolet suburban. Speedometer is sometimes jerky, and will read higher speeds than what is actually being done. This isn't the typical small error that most have, this is a substantial amount. Then, when coming to a full stop, the speedometer will stay stuck at a certain speed, and only read from there on out, making that mph the amount over being read.

My 2003 chevrolet suburban has developed a condition where the speedometer has become inoperative.the readings are very inaccurate.for example, while traveling at low, in town speeds, the speedometer will have readings in the 60s, 70s' and 80s.while in the park position, the speedometer will read 55mph.i consider this to be a safety issue because the driver has no idea how fast or slow the vehicle is going.without a sense of speed, the driver (my wife, or i) may unknowingly go much faster, or slower than the posted speed limits allow.the maker of the vehicle, general motors is aware that this is a wide spread problem, as i have received a letter from the general director of general motors stating that this could happen to my 3003 chevrolet suburban. General motors has even offered to provide owners with a special coverage that extends the warranty on the instrument panel cluster for the condition described above, as long as the vehicles age and mileage falls within certain parameters. Those parameters are the main reason for my complaint. Those parameters are 1) 7 years of the in service date, and 2) 70,000 miles, which ever occurs first.my claim to have the instrument cluster in my vehicle repaired under the special coverage was denied on 2/6/08 because the mileage of my vehicle was 89,000 miles at the time of my request. I believe that this is a large scale safety problem that warrants a recall by general motors rather than an extension of warranty with unreasonable mileage parameters.

Without warning my speedometer constantly says i am going 120/hr.this seems to be an important instrument to drive your suburban.to repair this instrument runs approximately $600.00 and from my understanding there have been thousands of suburbans that have encountered this problem.

I have a 2003 chevy suburbanwith 46,000 miles and the speedometer not working. I called the dealer and he said it is a common problem but i am still going to have to pay to fix it. The speedometer was reading 120 miles per hour and i was going less than 50 miles per hour. I researched this problem on the internet and i found hundreds of other people with the same problem in tahoes and silverados.

I almost got hit by another driver because of the problem with the speedometer on my 2003suburbanz71 the speedometer read now when is parkfrom 35 miles to 75 miles and when im driving sometimes it reads 0 or 120 miles doesn't work how is supposed to.

2003 chevy surburban speedometer failure. Speedometer fails to give accurate reading while stopped or while driving. This causes the hazard of not being able to gauge speed accurately and makes it impossible to comply with local, state and federal speed laws for public roadways.

Speedometer sticks intermittently while driving. Vehicle is a 2003 chevy suburban z71. Internet search finds that this is a common occurrence with these vehicles. Can not accurately adjust speed for safe driving which results in a hazard to other drivers.

The speed odometer sticks, chevy will only replace cars less than 7 yrs or under 70,000 miles. They claim that this is not a recall. My car has 108,000 miles and is not eligible for the repair. The chevy customer service manager claims that it is not a safety issue and they are voluntary replacing cars within the 7 yrs 70,000 miles .if my car is speeding in a school zone and hits a child because i am going to fast i would say that it is a safety issue. If the speed limit is 45 miles around a curve and my speed odometer is no correct i could flip my car. I would call this a safety issue. This is not about the money but the safety of the consumer. We need to put the public safety first.

The instrument panel on my 2003 chevrolet suburban does not accurately display speed.the needle either sticks or jumps around or just doesn't display speed accurately.this has created a situation wherein i do not ever know my actual speed creating a safety hazard for the occupants of my vehicle and others on the road.gm is apparently aware of the problem and is fixing those vehicles with less than 70,000 miles, but mine has greater mileage and they have refused to correct my problem.i think they should be compelled to correct this safety defect that they obviously agree exists.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph the speedometer would malfunction leaving the contact unaware of the speed that the vehicle was traveling.the contact also stated that the speedometer malfunctioned when the vehicle was in park. The speedometer would display 60 mph when the vehicle was not moving. The contact tookthe vehicle to the dealer who stated that the vehicle had under 80,000 miles. The dealer also advised the contact to file a complaint with the manufacturer to have the vehicle repaired at no cost, but since the contact did not file a complaint with the manufacturer and has high mileage the contact was responsible for the repairs.the contact stated that the manufacturer should issue a recall since the issue with the dashboard was very common. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 128,000.

I had the same problem like others with the speedometer in my 2003 suburban. Early 2007, i had less then 70k on it and when i contacted the dealer, there was no recall.the fix was about $500.now (2008), gm says they will fix it if the truck has less than 70k.how convenient?!gm waited until more cars are above 70k and then decides to recall it.where is nhtsa?this problem has been reported for years.

We purchased a 2003 chevrolet suburban z71 in january of 2007 with 70,900 miles.about 3 months after we purchased it we started experiencing intermittent issue with the speedometer where it will show the vehicle going 120 mph when the tack indicates we are at 1900 rpm on highway or approximately 60 to 70 mph.we received a letter from gm in january informing us that they would replace the instrument cluster if we have less than 70,000 miles.they indicated that it was not a recall but, a warranty extension.well we are have over 90,000 miles so they will not do anything for us.we got an estimate of $500 to fix this issue at a local dealership.i have started researching this and have noticed that there have been a few lawsuits filed in various states.i am requesting that the nhtsa require general motors complete a recall on this issue.this is ultimately a safety issue and it is impacting many vehicle owners.this should be a recall.any help you can give us would be appreciated!!!

I have a 2003 chevrolet tahoe that had a speedometer failure.the dealer charged me $500 to replace it.i noticed on the news that this is a wide spread problem.this is safety related and it should bea recall.http://www.king5.com/localnews/stories/nw_030107wabspeedometersuitsw.b8bbb09.htmllawsuit claims gm uses faulty speedometers.

Dt:on october 6, 2005 the positive post on the battery popped out of the battery without assistants.the vehicle was parked when this occurred.there was an acid leak.the battery was a side post battery manufactured by a. C. Delco.there were no injuries.when he contacted the manufacturer, they said that it was a one in a million case.the contact feltthat it was a design flaw.

My 2003 suburban would not start.i was going to jump start the vehicle and when i pulled the plastic cover off the positive terminal, the entire terminal fell out in my hand.the acid poured out of the hold and landed on my hand.the positive post on my ac delco battery failed after only 2 years, 9 months.it has a 6 year warranty.the battery was original equipment ton my 2003 chevrolet suburban.i contacted the chevrolet dealer and they told me that since my warranty had expired, then the battery was not covered.i contacted ac delco and asked if they would replace or pro-rate the battery.they said no.the damage to my vehicle was from the acid leaking out of the hole where the positive terminal was.the acid from the battery ate the paint off the interior of the battery shelf.i purchased a new battery from a different manufacturer and installed it in my suburban.in looking on the internet for similar problems, it was very easy to find others who had ac delco batteries and their positive post failed.ac delco knows of the problem, but continues to sell a defective battery.

Positive battery cable completely eroded from side post.

Dt:consumer owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. He took vehicle to dealerat least seven times since april. When the vehicle turns over it just does not start. Hecame back from myrtle beach, and while drivingon the interstate at80 mph when the vehicle shut down andstalled. He managed to coast off the interstate, it then started back up with one attempt. He traveled about 150 miles and the vehicle stalled again and it started back, this time it started andwas running a little rough. The consumertook vehicle to the next exit and found a dealer who told him that he could make it back to ohio if he did not drive it very fast. The dealer told him that it was the fuel filter that was not able to handle the pressure. He drove back at 55 mph, and the vehicle did not shut down. The next morning he took vehicle to dealer in farrisohio where he bought thevehicle. The dealerchanged the ignition switch, the fuel pump, and something he thinks is called a ubeck. He was frustrated that he seemed to spend too much timeat the dealer insteadathome.

My wife drives a chevrolettahoe 2003 ls with about 48 000 miles on it. Recently i was driving on the interstate and noticed the speedometer was showing 90 mph. I looked at other cars around me and decided may be i was going a little fast. So i slowed down a bit. The speedometer went up to 100. After i pullingover and stopped it went down slowly after i stopped. During the next week, the speedometer continued to increase and eventually stuck at the highest speed. So i made some calls to various dealers , and was told that several people have had this problem, and that it was going to cost $500 to fix the instrument cluster. I think this isa safety issue and want to notify chevrolet. I think this is their problem. I don't want to pay for this one. Yesterday evening, the speedometer appeared to be working again. This time i've noticed it will track on the right speed and then have to come to a complete stop to sort of reset it.

Seat belt straps in the driver's and middle seat in the second row become tight to the point that the passenger must unbuckle the seat belt and reattach as the ride progresses.also, the middle seat belt has released on a number of occassions sending my daughter flying to the front of the vehicle in her car seat on hard braking.second, the audio controls behind the center console become extremely hot, even more so when they are in use.

While making a turnlight came on indicating brake system failurein a matter of seconds. Then, everything shut down.consumer lost the ability to steer or brake.after strugglingconsumermanaged to pull the vehicle to the side of the road. After waiting a few minutes consumer attempted to restart the vehicle, but it would not turn over. It had no power.consumer had the vehicle towed to a chevrolet dealer for inspection, and mechanicdetermined that a short in afuel pump wire caused a fuse to blow out, which in turn, shut down the entire system.consumer stated thatdealer putvehicle on the diagnostic machine, and the main computer showed no failure.however, prior to this incident there had been some other electrical problems.

Dt: contact stated while driving the speedometer malfunctioned, and at different speeds it stuck. This occurred more frequently when it was hot outside or when the cluster panel heatedup.

I was driving about 45 mph on a 2 lane road when smoke started coming from the defrost vent. Smoke increased over the next 45 seconds. I was not able to pull over due to large ditches on either side of the road and rush hour traffic. Engine died after 35 seconds of smoke. I was able to turn a corner and get off the road. After exiting the truck a fire consumed the entire truck the fire department came 10 min later and put out the flames. The asst. Fire chief mentioned the fire started in the heating vent system. I can provide names and phone numbers of the chief upon request. The truck was a total loss. To date my insurance company has taken one week to retrieve the truck from the impound lot and chevy's product liability division has not help with any expenses incurred by myself including $3,800.00 in tool purchases which were destroyed in the fire. Help getting a new truck or car rental expenses. My insurance only pays 30 per day my cost on a truck is 55.per day. The chevy's product liability has been rude and very matter of fact speaking that the will only cover the nada value on my truck regardless of what the note is with my bank. Any expenses incurred will only be limited to what the insurance company pays. On both tools and auto.

Truck stalls out while driving.may drive for 20-30 miles, then stall out. Took it to the chevron dealer, they checked, did not find anything wrong. Said computer shows everything o.k.. This is very dangerous for my family, because truck will stop anywhere, and can cause an accident. The truck is 7 years old, someone should know what the problem is.

Driving in middle lane on highway out of state with kids in the car engine just quit--no power, couldn't signal to move or get to side of road, just sat in middle lane. Very scary!! towed to a nearby dealer-told us the fuel pump shorted the engine and had to replace the fuel pump. No advance warning-only a blower motor seemed to be malfunctioning that morning (have had a/c problems).no issue with power until it just quit.seems to be a common complaint when researching this year and vehicle--loss of power or decreased power. With the number of incidents found, someone should research this before another car is struck from behind and there are injuries or worse, fatalities.to have something this major happen without any symptoms or warning lights, and for the number of cases found, seems irresponsible at best, negligent at least. Please look into this!

I have been experiencing complete engine failure while driving at highway speeds without any warning. I notice a loss of power and notice the engine light is on and the vehicle is difficult to steer. After coasting to the left side of the road, the vehicle ignition is turned off and after several attempts, the car starts again and i can drive to my destination.fuel pump and fuel lines were replaced less than 2 years ago when a similar problem was experienced.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. While driving at 60 mph, the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The failure recurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic but was unable to diagnose or repair the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 101,000.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. After having the oil changed at an independent repair shop, the contact began to smell a burning oil odor coming from the engine. The contact began to notice the vehicle was consuming oil excessively and would replace the oil approximately two to three times a week. Approximately 1 year later, upon starting the vehicle, the contact began to hear a knocking noise coming from the engine before it stalled. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop where the motor was being replaced. The failure mileage was 140,000 and the current mileage was 150,000.

On three different occasions our 2003 chevy surburban has stopped in the middle of traffic for no apparent reason. We have taken it to the car dealership and they have charged us to put it on the computer machine and cannot find anything wrong with it, which leads me to believe that there is some kind of default with the vehicle.the last time we were making a 150 mile trip from our home to another city, and it stopped 5 times.we would have to pull off the highway and let it come to a complete stop, and then it would start back.needless to say i was very frightened and this is really dangerous. I would appreciate you all investigating this to see if there is a problem with the vehicle, since nothing shows up when they test it.at the present time i refuse to drive or ride in it for fear it will stop in the middle of traffic again, and we may not be able to pull over and someone is going to be seriously hurt. Once before when we first purchased it , they found out at the dealership that there waspin holes in the heads on the motor, which it was taken in because it was smoking.this vehicle was purchased brand new.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that she started the vehicle so that it could warm up and within a few minutes it was on fire. The police and fire department were called and a report was filed. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who advised her that the fire started in the lower resistor connector and the blower motor. The vehicle was deemed as destroyed. The manufacturer was contacted and an investigator inspected the vehicle but denied her claim. The failure mileage was approximately 132,000.

Oil pump failure with only 5,000 miles on engine. Gm wants to extend warranty and leave it at that. With no oil circulation internal engine damage possible and reliability/safety/trustworthiness of engine in question. Want gm to replace motor but they want me just accept extended warranty and go away. As a consumer i believe that i should not have to accept the risk of further engine failure and want a replacement based on substantial impairment and value impairment as well as substantial loss of use (been in repair 18 days since february). *la

Vehicle stalls while driving during hot weather.it will not start until the vehicle has sat for 10-20 minutes.

At start-up, usually when engine has been run/warmed, a "clicking"(as if the oil level was low/lifters) sound is heard for 30-plus seconds.my concern is the long-range (i.e., out of warranty) effects this condition will have on the life of the engine. The concern has been expressed to service reps at ancira chevrolet, who, at 3-4 occasions, replied that it is "normal."

An internal mechanical failure within the air conditioner's compressor caused the catastrophic failure of the ac unit.this ocurred at approximately 46000 miles.a hose attached to the compressor completely blew off the vehicle, disseminating a white cloud and freon on the vehicles directly behind me on the highway.chevrolet charged $1700 to repair the ac unit, since the vehicle was outside of the warranty.i have spoken with two other people who have identical incidents.

2003 suburbanin 10/2006 i noticed that my air conditioning was not working.at that time the vehicle was just out of warranty w/ 42,900 miles on it.i do not drive it during summer months.i purchased the vehicle with 6,000 miles on it, but was advised by the dealership that it was driven only by the sales manager and received an "a" title, as a new vehicle.i contacted gm's customer service on 10/23/06 and was advised to take it to my local dealership for an official diagnosis and estimate.i did so, and the estimate was for $1,034.25, involving rear a/c leaking vaporline at rear wheel opening.the service department assured me that there was nothing i could have done to cause that, and that the rusting started months before my warranty would have expired.after months of correspondence, i was advised to get it fixed in april, 2007.however,after having it fixed at their advice, gm subsequently told me that they could not assist me at all in recovering the cost of this expensive problem.a few months later, i found that i needed all 4 brake rotors replaced, because, as the garage mechanic put it "i've never seen such terrible rusting of all the hardware on that new of a vehicle."he even asked if the vehicle was submerged in water!it has not.this repair then cost me another $800.as you can imagine, i am extremely dissatisfied with this outcome.i bought a vehicle that cost over $42,000 and expected it to last me far more than 3 years without a rust problem.

I have recently snapped two belts to my air conditioner compressor and when i went to my private garage he told me that there was a service bulletin issued for this repair.this tells me that gm knew about this problem but told no one about it.now i have to pay a nearly $1,000.00 bill to get it fixed at my gm dealer.this is a sham.why couldn't they take responsibility for it and issue a recall rather than a service bulletin?how many repairs have been made for this type of repair, more than average i would bet?can you provide me those numbers?i first noticed the noise created from this problem last year but when it went away in the winter i thought it had fixed itself, until i started using my a/c again this summer then it came back.

2003 tahoe ; 76,000mac compressor failure that ruined entire system a/c system service/inspected every may ; driving down highway when a/c stopped blowing cold air ; few minutes later ac high pressure line to condenser burst. Stopped car and checked out noise found busted hose and oil w/ metal fillings dripping from line.it was 98 degrees outside and we were driving to family vacation at beach . Had to drive remaining 5 hrs w/o ac as it was sat pm. No dealer w/in miles so took to highly recommended local garage; hoping it was just a pressure line replacement. Shop called later that day to say entire system contaminated w/ fillings from compressor coming apart internally causing condenser to be stopped up as well dryer and evaporator . Entire system components replaced and system flushed ; $1950 . New compressor from chevrolet not same as original due to history of problems.

Dt: the contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that the gm dealershiptried several times to repair the vibration andhumming noisecoming fromthe air conditioner. However, gm manufacturer wrote a letter to the dealership , telling them to stop all attempts to repair this vehicle until they come up with asolution for this type of problem. The contact has been having this problem for a couple of years. The contact stated that he could hear a humming noise in the steering wheel while driving. This occurred all the time while the air conditioner was turned on. If the air conditioner was off thenthe consumercouldnot hear this noise.

Consumer stated that all four doors don't work properly.radio is not working as well. While driving, all gauge warning lights continuously illuminates the dash board. Dealer replaced. Alternator, radio twice, door electrical system. The dash board including the gaugesand still persist the problem intermittently.*la

Running lamps light bulb sockets appear to be defective.new light bulbs do not solve the problem.i contacted the dealer and the parts salesman told me it is a common problem with the wiring socket and it needs to be replaced.as i have been driving around i have noticed many chevy silverado's, suburban's, and tahoes with running lamps inoperative.

While driving withheadlights on they would flicker off and on intermittently. This would cause poor visibility for the driver at night.had taken vehicle to dealership, and mechanic could not locate the cause of the problem.

I was driving on the freeway and all of a sudden i had 0% of my brakes and all the brake fluid was gone my emergency brake also failed prior to this i put in brake fluid and it all leaked out within a matter of moments

On both my 2003 chevy suburban, and 2002 chevy k2500 truck, the gas gauge reads erroneously.tends to get hung up at 1/4 tank, then later goes to empty...at which time i've run out of gas!chevy replaced the burb fuel sensor twice, and the truck once...under warranty.past warranty they will not help.safety issue:i ran out of gas in downtown atlanta, interstate traffic during rush hour, had to weave my dead truck through 70 mph traffic to the left shoulder.very dangerous move...luckily was not rear-ended!have friends w/ same truck...same problem.

Before complete failure, over a period of a month the car failed to start/turnover. After 5 minutes &repeated attempts car would finally start. On final failure date, the car would not start even with periodic attempts over 2 days. Vehicle was towed to dealer. Dealer replaced fuel pump & fuel filter which seems to have fixed the problem.

The vehicle cut off.the fuel pump was replaced.the vehicle still cut off on the highway, however, the dealer could not find any defect.

The vehicle has going to the shop 8+ times for similar problem. Vehicle loses power and dies out. Some times it will restart after 5 minutes, and some times it will not restart.the dealer has replaced the fuel pump 3 times, along with the module. They also have replaced the fuel sender, relay, crankshaft position sensor, and fuel filter.the dealer has failed to find the problem.

Dt: the contact stated the fuel tank collapsed, crushing the fuel pump, which has been replaced twice.the fuel tank was plastic.the vent to the fuel tank was blocked and caused a vacuum which crushed the fuel pump.the first time, the vehicle was driven at 45 mph, it shut down without warning and would not restart.an indicator light illuminated, statingthe computer shut down the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the dealership, and the fuel pump was replaced.less than three months later while driving, the problem recurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealership. The fuel pump was replaced a second time, and the vent for the fuel tank was retro fitted to the engine compartment.the vehicle has not had any more problems.

2003 chevy suburban stalled twice on the highway at high speeds. Consumer states that the vehicle had the fuel pump replaced. After the fuel pump was replaced consumer noticed gasoline all over the garage floor.

While driving consumer smelled gas odor.technician indicatedthe fuel line system was leaking gasoline, causing stalling.dealership wasnotified.

I purchased this suburban new in 2003.in may of 20011, i suddenly had no brakes when backing up and going forward in parking lot after driving from home to store.took the suburban to olympia, washington chevrolet dealer who said cause of the brake failure was due to rusting of brake lines that were leaking and recommended replacing all brake lines. In the previous weeks, i had driven the suburban on mountain roads in national forests in the area that were unpaved and had steep inclines, was lucky not to have had a failure on those roads or on paved highway at high speeds on the trip home.all break lines were replaced.this required removal of the fuel tank.a few weeks later the service engine check light came on i took the suburban back to the dealer who determined that the problem was the front fuel tank vent that was also rusted and was not functioning properly.this required replacing the fuel tank since the vent was not sold separately!!the new tank with vent cost $829 dollars bringing the total cost over $3,000 dollars. Note, i also purchased a 2003 honda accord new, which i still have, and have driven it for over 70,000 miles and in the same environment as the 2003 suburban, and it has no signs of rust on the brake lines or fuel lines. This seems to be a common problem with suburbans of other model years and it is a life endangering failure.i feel i should be compensated by chevrolet for these repairs and a recall issued all suburbans to check for this rusting of the brake and fuel lines to avoid loss of brakes that could cause an accident and loss of life.

While shifting the vehicle into another gear, the vehicle will not move at all.the gear shift will get stuck. Please fill in additional information. Dealer is aware of the problem. Ph

I purchased a new 2003 chevrolet suburban in december of 2003.on may 13, 2005, the transmission began to fail rapidly.the automatic transmission will not easily shift into second gear and reverse gear does not function at all.the car came with a 3 year 36,000 mile power train warranty and i have put 48,000 miles on it in the eighteen months that i've owned it.98% of the miles on the odometer are highway miles.i have towed a boat exactly 4 times.i took the car to a chevrolet dealer who indicated that the transmission needed to be replaced at a cost of $2452.00chevrolet has offered to pay for the parts & wants me to pay for the labor-$900.00there are two technical safety bulletins relating to this problem- #030730028 "drivetrain "clunks" when stopping" and 00822b, "no second & fouth gears and no reverse"

While driving approximately 45 mph and would start to shift between 2nd and 3rd gears vehicle would give a strong jerking motion. Have taken to dealership, and mechanic could not locate cause of problem.

While driving at highway speeds automatic transmission stopped shifting. Vehicle was towed to a dealer, who found a split in a transmissiongasket which caused the clutch and piston not to function.

Consumer stated that his 2 yr old son was able to pull his vehicle out of park without stepping on the brakes.he stated that the child was in the vehicle and was apparently playing with the gear shifter.he then moved the shift level causing the vehicle to roll backward hitting a pole and bending his front passenger side door.he stated he does not think this vehicle has a shift interlock, which will not allow the gear shifter to be moved without stepping on the brakes first.he stated he took the vehicle to the dealer and they did not know this either.the consumer stated the interlock only works when the key is in the ignition to drive.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. The contactstated the vehicle was parked in the driveway with the key in the ignition while she and her two small children, ages 2 and 4, were watching a movie. The battery died during the movie and the contact momentarily left both children in the vehicle while she went to retrieve jumper cables. The youngest child was able to move the shifter out of gear and the vehicle proceeded to move, knocking the youngest child out of the vehicle. The child became lodged between the rear of the vehicle and a grill. The contact heard the crash and discovered the child pinned beneath the vehicle. She attempted to remove the child but to no avail. She shifted the vehicle into neutral and attempted to move the vehicle but she was unable to move the vehicle. The police arrived and the child was transported to the hospital via ambulance. The child suffered blunt force trauma, smoke inhalation, cardiac arrest and severe 2nd and 3rd degree burns to the lower half of his body. The child did not survive. The police stated they too were able to move the shifter out of place without engaging the brakes. A police report was available. The police stated they were doing a supplemental report to show the vehicle failure. The vin was not available. The failure and current mileages were unknown. Lawyer wrote in on behalf of client stating that all future correspondence regarding the incident should be direct toward the law firm. Updated 12/03/10updated 12/22/10

Gear is easily moved from drive to neutral without depressing the button on gear shift. Dealership and manufacturer were called about the problem.

No event leading to failure.heard clunk - tranmission went out48,000 miles. Vehicle has never towed anything.replaced transmission - shop now says rear differntial also bad.

While driving at highway speeds, the overdrive gear would not hold and constantly shifted in and out of high gear.problem has happened occassionally since the first time.in addition, transmission continues to shift at higher rpm than previously.

Sometimes feeling of being in neutral for a second then clunk in tranny/rear end? acts as engagement of cruise control increasing speed, not able to disengage by hitting brake.computer did not show anything.next time putter "locked out" tech's. Check engine light illuminated after 300 miles travel.hard shift from first to second (felt like transmission dropped from vehicle.this first occurred six months after purchase of 2003 chevrolet suburban (new).dealer re-programmed transmission control module.same problem on return trip four days later, and six more times in the past 2 1/2 years.four separate gm dealers, in two states, have attempted fix via: 1. Re-program tcm, 2. Replace transmission solenoid, 3. Replace transmission valve body and re-program tcm.still not fixed.

Regular harsh engagement on my 2003 chevrolet tahoe transmission.1) had a huge clunk when having to suddently stop on one occasion - sounded like the transmission was going to drop/bam.2) on an unpredictable basis the transmission harshly engages when going shifting at the slower spds. 3)brought to service dealor and they acknowledge problem during a test drive "that needs to be ck'd out".they said they fixed.4) problem was worse when car was received back (have no idea if car will ever bam/clunk/wham/drop again as i normally don't suddenly stop but whatever that was it certainly wasn't good for the transmission). I reported the frequency of the harsh engagements actually were more often and they then changed there tune citing a service bulletin saying it's normal ".5) now 15,000 miles later of harsh engagements i'm sensing some slippage and those harsh engagements are now harsher.i'm very disappointed in the performance of my tahoe and am very concerned of the future of the transmission in that gm & belzers acknowledge the problem then said gm says not to do anything. Car still runs but it very annoying when driving in the cities stop and go traffice...a clunk clunk here and a clunk clunk there here a clunk there a clunk.this is absolutely ridiculous!

While parked with the key in the ignitionvehicle was able to switch gears without applying the brakes. As a result, vehicle crashedinto the garage. No injuries reported.

This condition was brought to my attention by the tragedy detailed by the parents of little milan hedmark. Www.kidsandcars.org . The transmission will shift into neutral without having to press the brake if the key moved forward just one position from lock. A child could easily accomplish this just by being curious and left alone for only a second. Please make folks aware of this. 96' and later model chevrolet.

When vehicle's speed reached between 45-70 mph there was a grinding noise in the front end. The dealership found metal shavings in the front differential fluid. The dealership changed all the front end components in an attempt to correct the problem, but the problem still existed.

Consumer stated that seat belt will lock up before braking. Dealer notified.

The driver's seat belt failed on my 2003 chevy suburban lt. From the time i purchased the vehicle new in oct 2003 until the seat belt finally outright failed, i noticed several instances where the seat belt tension locking mechanism would apparently jam and either not release for proper adjustment, or fail to engage and take up extra belt slack.this seemed to self correct for short periods before re-emerging.finally, the tension mechanism stopped working completely. This left my seat belt totally limp and useless with no spring-like function to take-up the excess belt portion and unable to properly tighten and secure the driver in place.i called my chev dealership and expressed my desire to have this fixed immediately as a safety issue.they argued with me as to whether the symptom i described was actually a problem or not and indicated that they would have to order parts.approx. 10 days later they notified me that i could bring it in for repair, but that they would assess carefully if actually a warranty item or not.upon bringing the vehicle in, the chev dealership mechanic decided that yes - they would fix it under warranty.the repair however, was quite lengthy in time and involved three chev mechanics who worked in greta frustration and confusion as to how to replace the belt and tension device as theyhad little experience or knowledge in how to actually install the new part.i got the distinct impression that a proper tech support manual was either lacking or they simply chose not to follow it very well.regardless, some thee hours later they deemed the belt fixed - and to their credit, i have not had any recurrent problem with the seat belt mechanism.in hindsight, i'm not sure how frequent this particular safety failure has occurred in 2003 chev suburbans, but i decided to make it a matter of record in case chev needs to better address how dealership mechanics should respond to similar critical safety repairs in the future.

The middle position in the 2nd row of seats in a 2003 chevrolet suburban z71is unsafe for a child safety seat. There is a leather loop (intended to hold the shoulder belt in place when not in use) that alters the path of the seat belt when the child seat is installed. Overtime through wear and tear or in the event of an accident this leather strap may break. This would introduce more slack in the belt and make the seat unsafe.

My 5 year old child was buckled into the seat belt, he was playing with the seat belt put his legs through the seat belt, he unbuckled the seat belt to untangle and rebuckle, when he unfastened the seat belt the slack went back into the holder, the seat belt being locked would not move until it was completely released ,there was no way to release completely since it was around his waist and no way for him to get out, there was not enough slack for him to move, as our fingers would not even fit in between the seat belt and his waist.we had to cut the seat belt to get him out. ****there needs to be a release button so that the seat belts release if this occurs again.*****

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. The rotors have been replaced 3 times. The contact had to apply pressure to the brakes in order to stop the vehicles regardless of the driving conditions.the dealer stated that the rotors were corroded at 13,000 miles and replaced them.the failure repeated itself at 18,000 miles.the current mileage was 25,000.the consumer stated wants to be reimbursed for defect repairs and any future repairs due to the defect. The dealer stated recall on seatbelts. Updated 06/26/07

The rearseat belt locked and had to be cut to release a child from the seat belt.

Problems with rear passenger seats on a 2003 z71 suburban.*mrthe safety patrol was unable to properly put the child safety seat into the vehicle because of the way the latch system was designed. The consumer was concerned with the safety of her children.it was explained to the consumer that it was illegal to place a car seat in front of anything that pulls down, the rear center seat contained a drink holder/arm rest and the rear passenger seat only slid forward for access to the rear third seat.

While driving 40 mph driver's seat dropped back.dealer stated they could not duplicate the problem.

Vehicle was coming to a stop from a speed of approximately 30mph and brakes failed suddenly to bring vehicle to a stop a normal rate. Driver needed to swerve off road to avoid collision. Vehicle crashed into side curve. Not warning sign or light was lit before incident. Clear yellowish fluid drained from underneath vehicle near driver's door.

While driving with my two daughters and husband, we attempted to come to a stop and brake pedal went all the way to the floor, truck would not stop.luckily we were not going that fast just 20 mph.husband diagnosed the problem, no brake fluid.drove very slowly to local auto store, filled up brake fluid.no change in brakes.was able to drive slowly home with hazards on.took to local mechanic, upon inspection, brakes lines completely rusted out!entire brake line to be replaced, over 2000.00 job!

Total brake failure caused a collision with car that had slowed in front. Inspection under the car showed brake fluid sprayed around the left side of the rear axle.

Loss of braking power and stopping ability.a certified mechanic told me that this year vehicle had the incorrect brakingsystem installed at manufacture.it is a 5780 pound vehicle (3/4 ton) with 1/2 ton braking system factory installed.on way home from ny state to florida i had less and less stopping power.brake fluid up to full level.excessive heat from front wheels.i drove at slower speeds in order to keep a safe distance in front of me in case i needed to stop quickly, which i felt the vehicle could not stop in time to avoid an accident.i have contacted gm to report and ask what can be done.in the interim i have had new rotors and brake pads installed as a stop gap measure.i have been told it is not a permanent fix as the weight of the vehicle requires the 3/4 ton braking system rather than the 1/2 ton system that is on the vehicle.there will be excessive pad and rotor wear as a consequence.

I was driving about 25mph on a snow covered road. I applied the brake and the abs system engaged then the brake pedal went down to the floor with no hydraulic pressure. The car no longer slow down so i down shifted to slow the car and finally got it to stop and shifted to neutral to stay stopped. Once i put the car in gear the brakes could not keep the car from moving. Once safely off the road i checked the brake fluid and their was none. The brake line failed and all the fluid leaked out. I am thankful this didn't happen while i was driving at any faster speeds, this is very dangerous and occurred with no prior warning.

As i was backing out of a parking space, i experienced a total brake failure. Fortunately, i was going slow enough to stop and avoid injuring myself or another person. Thank god i wasn't going 50 mph with my wife and 4 children in the car or i might not be writing this today (or someone else could have been injured by me due to this brake failure).i discovered the reason for this failure was because my brake line prematurely corroded and this problem is well known to nhtsa and you have done absolutely nothing. How dare you and gm put my family and other innocent bystanders at risk because of your incompetence!!!why hasn't there been a recall???a simple google search shows this problem has been experienced by thousands of chevy owners as well as premature rusting of the body and undercarriage which i am also experiencing. This car only has 60k miles and has been well cared for, but i am experiencing problems that cars with 3 times as many miles shouldn't experience. Perhaps congress would be interested in this dereliction of duty by nhtsa. How many americans have to die or get injured in accidents before you take action???if total failure of a vehicle's breaking system doesn't spur a call to action by nhtsa then what will?what could be more vital to safety than brakes on a 1/2 ton truck?repairs for the brake line will cost me over $1,200 and that just adds insult to this whole disgraceful situation. I demand to be reimbursed for this well known safety issue that i have to correct.nhtsa has failed and it's costing way more than $1,200; it's costing americans their lives.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. While driving 40 mph, the brakes were engaged and the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard. The contact was barely able to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician diagnosed that there was a brake line failure due to corrosion. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 159,000.

Brakes failed when coming to a stop after leaving a gas station. Brake fluid leaking down frame rail next to abs booster by thefuel tank.

My son was driving in bakersfield ca, he was on buena vista, when he came to a traffic light at ming ave. The light changed and when he hit the brakes the warning light came on. The front brakes failed to work and he skidded thru the intersection, thru the red light. The speed limit is 55 mph on that road, the time was 11am. No other car was hit.he had my truck towed to a aaa shop, they said the front brake tubing off the abs boxed to the front caliperfailed from rusting out (with no warning). They said they could not fix it at that shop and i should take it to3 way chev. I called the chevy factory line and spoke to a rep. She said they might warranty some of the repair but their dealer ship had to verifythe problem. I informed her of the mileage and gave her the vin# i told her i also bought the car from heritage chevy in md. I called them and got a price to replace all the brake tubing for $1600.00 and if it needed a abs box it would be total of $3400.00 for everything.3way chevy in bakersfield said it would cost $7597.07 for everything but it may be more because they said they had to remove the cab from the frame. They also said the truck should not be driven in the snow because of the salt that is used on the roads. This is a 4x4 and i live in northern md and i bought for the snow and i tow a 24 foot boat that weighs 6300 lbs. The factory rep said they could not help me in any way because of the age and mileage, which i originally told them about. The factory reps keep on transferring me to other reps till i gave up. I was ase tech( everything except transmissions ) ,md state inspectorand md certified emissions for over 20 years. This brake problem with the gm trucks will eventually get someone hurt or killed. I sold the truck for $ 1500.00 with no brakes as is.

Brake fail with no pressure when brake pedal was pushed and no warning lights, we were going about 65 mph and had to stop for traffic. Had to pull off roadway on to grass area to avoid hitting other cars. Lucky no one was kill. Upon inspection, the driver side brake line was corroded, it was directly under the driver seat area. This is the first time in my life that brake line ever fail due to corrosion. We in north east of the country by the shore area are subject to salt during winter and manufacture should take this into consideration for safety of public.

While driving down hill the light at the bottom of the hill turned red. I stepped on the brakes, heard a pop and hissing noise and the brake pedal went to the floor. The truck was slowing but not by much. I pulled it into low gear and blew the horn. The car sitting at the light took notice and pulled out of the way and i was able to go around the corner onto level ground and stop the truck. When i opened the door brake fluid was pouring out on the ground. There was no warning of the failure and the truck has been gm dealer serviced including brakes.

While slowing from 55mph to make a turn off of state highway, brake system failed at approximately 35mph due to ruptured steel line.pedal went fully to floor, brakes released and turn off was missed.thankful nobody was in the way!shocked that this is apparently a common issue with this vehicle at just 13yrs and 150k miles!!

While attempting to stop the brake pedal went to the floor i had drive to the shoulder of the road to keep from hitting the car ahead of me. The right front steel hydraulic brake line failed due to rust.

Approaching stop sign and brake pedal went to floor.after looking at lines ,they are all corroded terribly and i noticed the nhtsa has an open complaint on this very thing.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal, excessive force had to be apply to the brake pedal to bring the vehicle to a complete stop. The brake warning light illuminated along with an indication to reduce brake power. The contact stated that when depressing the brake pedal, she could hear the air and a humming noise.the vehicle was not taken to a dealer nor the manufacturer made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000.

On 3-8-14 at about 10:00 am i was less than a mile from home when i was approaching a two way stop sign traveling at about 30 mph.i began braking normally for the stop when shortly after applying the brakes, the resistance from the brake pedal was lost and the pedal went instantly to the floor.at the time the pedal went to the floor there was no longer any breaking of the vehicle.i could not slow the vehicle by braking and continued through the intersection.fortunately, there were no cars in the intersection.pumping the brakes lightly provided a slight breaking.i continued to drift and down shift the transmission until the car could be stopped. When inspecting under the vehicle, break fluid was seen dripping at a fast rate from a break line under the driver side door.a puddle of brake fluid was quickly building up. Later that day i went to the chevrolet dealer and explained what happened.i was told it's a common problem and there was a repair kit that could be installed.i was not aware of the common instantaneous brake failure problem.

I was stopped at an intersection at a stop sign. There was a car approaching on my left that had the right of way and did not have a stop sign. They were traveling at approximately 30 mph. My foot was on the brake pedal, and it suddenly dropped to the floor. My vehicle went into the path of the oncoming car and i could not stop. I cut my wheel to the right and accelerated quickly to get out of the way. After i was clear of them, i pulled over to the side of the road. My vehicle was towed to a local shop and the rear metal brake line had failed and had to be replaced.

I was driving my 2003 suburban and heading southbound along washington blvd. In arlington county.as i approached merging traffic from rt. 50/arlington blvd. And ft. Myer, i adjusted my speed to allow vehicle #1 to merge in front of me.simultaneously, vehicle #2 sped up to abruptly merge in front of vehicle #1, causing that vehicle to brake hard directly in front of me.i also had to brake hard to avoid hitting vehicle #1 and upon doing so managed to get stopped without contact, but at the same time lost all further braking ability.the brake light and a warning message to "service brakes immediately" both illuminated on the instrument panel.i was able to safely pull to the right side of the highway and into the breakdown lane and called aaa for tow service.the tow truck driver's initial assessment was that the brake linings had leaked out.after having the truck towed and further assessed, it was determined that the front brake lines had failed and needed to be replaced to the abs module.although now a 11 year old vehicle, it has been maintained routinely by either the chevrolet dealership where we purchased our suburban, or with our local sunoco mechanic.it also recently passed inspection in march of this year.there was no previous indication or warning of any possible brake issues.fortunately, this incident was not serious; however, i believe it could have been avoided entirely had gm notified owners of possible brake line failure.

Re: "g.m. Resists recalling trucks over brake lines", ny times, july 7, 2014in spite of my 2003 chevy suburban passing new hampshire's mandatory safety inspection in may of 2018, in august of 2018 a brake line burst, resulting in loss of brake function. The line burst at a point below the driver's door and just forward of the abs modulator, where the lines cross over the top of the frame and are exposed to wheel spray. At the point of failure, the lines are overlaid and obscured by a large bundle of electric wires. The attached photo shows the failure point, with the sheathed wire bundle moved up out of the way. The mileage at the time was approximately 167500.with regard to the nhtsa determination not to recall "almost 1.8 million full-size pickup trucks and sport utility vehicles from the 1999 to 2003 model years for corrosion-related brake failures", as summarized in the 7/7/14 ny times article, does nhtsa's decision to absolve gm of responsibility on this issue also absolve nhtsa and/or gm of responsibility to notify owners that they are in grave danger if they are still operating their vehicles with the original brake lines? nhtsa should know from their own records that a large number of these vehicles are still on the road. I know because i see them every day.as for gm's excuses:'"g.m. Has resisted recalling the pickups and sport utility vehicles, telling regulators that rusted brake lines are a routine maintenance issue."obrake lines are not a moving part. How are they "maintained"?i have more to say, but you are limiting me.

This truck is equipped with a supplimental vacuum pump on the brake booster, when it fails braking is reduced by 50%. The part has been discontinued by chevy with no plans for a replacement. I have had the vehicle in 3 shops complaining of poor brakes, and finally theres a solution. What am i suppose to do, scrap out a $10,000 vehicle ? im sure this hidden problem has caused a many accidents that could of been avoided.

My brakes did not seem to be operating correctly.stopping distance was greatly increased.when i checked, most of my brake lines were completely rusted and crumbling.i think it is important to note this is a low mileage, garage kept vehicle which is rarely driven in the winter.furthermore, it has received undercarriage clean water washing twice a year since 2006 when i purchased it.i understand that brake lines will eventually rust but this case seems extreme, especially since it is a well cared for, garage kept vehicle that rarely sees road salt.

I took my vehicle in for our states' required annual vehicle inspection.the mechanic observed that the brake lines were extremely rusty and, in his own words, on the verge of complete failure.he showed me the lines which were flaking and already pitted and crevased.he noted this was a **very** dangerous condition and could result in a "no brake condition".after showing me the brake lines in question, he recommended full brake line replacement.i took his recommendation seriously and i went home and did some research on the internet, and much to my surprise, the internet abounded with owners of 1999-2003 suburban (and other chevy/gm models) problems associated with the rusting of brake lines.!!!i was appalled that so many problems have been documented and with no formal recourse/action taken by chevrolet.[as a related note, in the prior annual inspection for this vehicle, the abs sensors were noted as rusted through, and which i had replaced].we live in virginia where the weather is moderate and there is not that much winter conditions that require road salting, etc. So this is not a result of the vehicle living in harsh road-salted conditions. I ended up deciding to spend the $$ to remediate this dangerous driving condition and to get another 10 years out of the vehicle.i purchased a stainless steel set of pre-bent brake lines specific to this vehicle (shows that there is a demand for these in the market because of this condition) and having them installed (over $1k total).ouch! chevrolet needs to step up to the plate, admit culpability, and make it right for vehicle owners.come on chevy...

While towing a bass boat and slowing to turn into a driveway, the brake pedal suddenly went to the floor causing me to drive into an open field while attempting to pump brakes to stop. Once stopped i checked to find a large leak in a brake line running along drivers side rear frame. Fortunately i had just driven down a steep curved hill.additionally, a second failure occurred on 8/3/2015 when driving toward an intersection stop sign. Again the pedal went to the floor. Causing a near miss as the stop sign was driven through when i couldn't stop. This time the drivers front line ruptured. On exam half the lines are clear of rust and half are all rusted obviously from different suppliers. This time all will be replaced.

Catastrophic brake failure; brake pedal went to the floor with very little stopping power left to the vehicle. Mechanic has advised that all of the brake lines require replacement.

Brake lines rusted thru going to anti lock block. These lines run along the outside of the frame.

Pulling out of driveway pedal went to floor. Got out of truck and noticed brakeline broken under driverside door.. All lines look horrible.

Lost all brake fluid in the reservoir, brake line leaked all ofthe fluid out, i did not have any breaks, awfultime trying to stop. The mechanic informed, it happens a lot with suburbans

I took my 2003 chevy suburban for a brake fluid flush recently. The shop told me that all the brake components are corroded very badly especially the brake lines. The shop recommended to replace all my brake calipers. Brake rotors were almost end of their life. So i ended up replacing all 4 brake calipers, rotors, pads and the brake hoses leading to the brake calipers. The shop said sooner or later i would need my brake lines replaced. I just searched online and came across nhtsa's investigation on the brake line corrosion hence decided to report it to you. From the carfax history report, this truck was registered around philadelphia, pa area for it's entire life and also it was serviced at dealerships around this area. So i guess this truck was on the northeast part of the u.s for its entire life but not closer to salt (sea) water or weather.. Should you need more information feel free to contact me via email or phone.

One of the brake lines from the master cylinder to the abs control unit ruptured due to severe corrosion, resulting in severe loss of brake fluid, and near complete loss of braking force.replaced both lines on the advice of my mechanic who stated that the other line was just as badly corroded.subsequently, the brake line from the abs control unit to the rear brakes failed due to severe corrosion in december of 2012, resulting in complete loss of rear brake effectiveness. Replaced that portion of brake system, and very concerned about the remainder of the original equipment brake lines still extant.

While sitting at the mailbox checking mail and pressing on the brakes firmly, the brake pedal suddenly went to the floor and the warning lights flashed red repeatedly saying to check the brake system. The brake fluid was leaking all over the place. Fortunately there wasenough braking ability left to park the vehicle in the driveway. Also, i am thankful this did not happen on the highway.

Traveling from ma to fl, stopped to eat dinner and change drivers. When we resumed the trip we lost the brakes in the parking lot of the restaurant. A mechanic in nc came out on a sunday morning to help us. He found the brake line at the left rear axle had ruptured due to corrosion. He said he keeps a coil of brake lines in stock so he can make up a brake line for travelers from the north. When i called him to tell him we lost our brakes, he said you are from the north, right? i thought it was my accent but he said it was because gets enough calls for this that he keeps a coil of material in stock. We are fortunate it was not in city traffic or at a higher speed. When i did a google search i found many others with the same experience and an article that nhtsa was studying this.

I had just come off the highway and was on the exit ramp.went to press my brakes at the stop light and my foot went to the floor.thankfully the off ramp was an slight uphill so that helped me slow and there was no traffic coming across.i went through the stop light and was able to stop after the turn by pressing the brake all the way to the floor.i had the car towed to our mechanic who determined that 2 of the brake lines had rusted through.the other lines were showing signs of rust so they were all replaced.i was thankful that my 4 kids and husband were not in the car and that there was no cross traffic or this could have had a much worse ending.after seeing how many complaints there are about the brake lines on the 2003 suburban, i would hope that a recall would be issued for safety sake!

I have a very hard time stopping the vehicle suddenly. Pedal will go all the way to the floor. Abs never activates because wheels will not even attempt to lock up. (except in snow or ice)when sitting still pedal will push entirely to the floor. Have replaced all brakes and rotors and front calipers and master cylinder. Seems to have all the symtoms of campaign number 04v045000, but when ienter my vin number, that recall does not come up. Irearended someone about a year ago ( no damage) since then imake sure to leave about 150 feet between me and the car in front of me.

Slowing down to turn on to i95, brake pedal went to the floor. Had no brakes what so ever, no warning. Thank the lord that we were able to move out of traffic and slow down with out having a accident. Took it to gm dealer they replaced all to lines. Had to take it to other gm dealer to tighten and replace a part the other dealer had stripped the threads on and tried to fix it with teflon tape. Also tighten body mounts the dealer left loose.

This was the date a mechanic advised us that the brake lines are severely corroded and that they should be replaced.our vehicle is garaged in the winter and we bought the vehicle new.the brake lines should last longer than that.

Driving in my subdivision i applied the brake with very limited/slow stopping power stopping.with great luck it wasn't an emergency, it could have been so terrible if a kid came in front last minute because i would not have been able to stop and there would have been a very serious incident.driving very slowly home and in the driveway i had another person apply the brakes and when they did brake fluid came dumping out of the brake lines under the drivers seat.closer inspection revealed terribly rusted out brake lines.one of the lines had split, all the others could go any day now.reading online this is not a new issue.this should be a recall, one day these lines are going to break at the wrong time and someone or some people may lose their life.do the right thing gm.

While applying my brakes on highway rout 87, near albany ny, the pedal went to the floor and we crashed into the car in front of us. After being towed to a aaa repair facility they told us that the brakes were fine but the steel brake line had blown out and the fluid had leaked causing loss of stoping power without any warning... We spent $890.00 plus a hotel room for one night as we waited for them to make a repair to one brake line. I recently found out all the brake lines are rotted out and need to be replaced. This makes no sense.....there is a clear safety issue here.please reopen the case and advise a recall before a big suv like ours hurts someone in a small car because there brake lines failed. They won't know until its to late!!!

My low mileage 2003 suburban has been garage kept since i purchased it new.in march 2011 my brake lines failed causing me to hit the stopped vehicle in front of me. Upon taking it to jba chevrolet for repairs, service manager said they replaced rotted brake lines in 2003 and 2004 gm products all day long.he also said that during these years gm chose not to anodize their brake lines on some models.i asked the dealership if this had been reported to the nhtsa, he told us that car dealers and repair shops are not allowed to file complaints, that complaints must come directly from the consumer.who else would know better than a car dealer or repair shop about continuing defects found in a certain model vehicle.what does it take to get a recall? how many people must die?

I was coming up on an intersection when the light turned red, i stepped on the brakes and they failed to work. I had no warning, only after i tried to stop the car did the instrument panel light come on and read "service brakes". The car went into the intersection. I called aaa, who came and towed me to a dealership.the dealership said that the brake lines had corroded and i had lost all brake fluid.

All brake lines and fuel line rusted, was not driving fast ,dealer told me it would cost 3500. Have to take trans out ,i think gm should help pay for this they have 3 other tahoes and suburbans there with the same problem ,too bad they got bailed out.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that while having routine maintenance performed, the contact was informed by an independent mechanic that the brake lines were corroded. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for a second opinion. The technician stated that the brake lines were working up to standards. The vehicle had not been repaired. The vehicle failure mileage was 142,000.

I was driving my suburban 2500 and pulling a trailer. I hit the brakes to stop at an intersection and the brake pedal went right to the floor.i went right through the stop sign and just missed another car before i could stop.i checked the brakes, a brake line under the truck had burst due to heavy rusting.

Wife just returned from work, backing into the garage. Brake pedal went to the floor (no lights or warnings)? when i crawled under and looked brake lines were ruptured nest to frame.

Right in my own driveway, i applied the brake pedal and without any prior issues the pedal went to the floor and the dash alert came on to service brake system.thankfully, this did not occur while on the road because it was a sudden failure.even at slow speed, the heavy vehicle took several feet to stop.the brake line from the abs module heading to the rear axle burst in 3 or 4 places causing a large amount of brake fluid to leak out.all lines to and from the abs module are heavily rusted and look much worse than other components.as i looked into this online, i've discovered numerous vehicles having this and much worse problems involving accidents.i can't see how this vehicle could have ever stopped safely.i just drove it the night before and had no warning signs.this is more than normal wear and tear.these brake lines are sub standard and could have been made better.another sign of large corporations trying to use inferior materials to boost their stockholders profits.someone help us.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. While driving 10 mph, the brakes failed to respond. Another vehicle, traveling approximately 50 mph, crashed into the contact's vehicle. The air bag failed to deploy. The contact sustained minor injuries. The contact stated that two passengers in the other vehicle sustained major injuries. A police report was filed and medical attention was received. The vehicle was not repaired or diagnosed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 50,000.

When departing for the day, the brake pedal went completely to the floor. The stopping time of the vehicle was compromised.since the vehicle was being used to tow a 19 foot boat, the trip was aborted in the first mile and the vehicle was parked. Upon inspection of the brakes, a severe leaking of brake fluid was discovered.the brake lines were checked and extensive rusting of the lines was discovered.there was no indication of brake fluid leaks or reduced pressure from any indicator signal.the failure was sudden and unexpected as the brakes worked without issue the previous evening.

I was driving on the freeway and all of a sudden i had 0% of my brakes and all the brake fluid was gone my emergency brake also failed prior to this i put in brake fluid and it all leaked out within a matter of moments

Stopped to get gas. Brake pedal went to the floor and wouldn't stop, warnings started going off and smoke was coming from under the vehicle, was able to put the vehicle in park to avoid hitting anything, husband was able to look under vehicle and saw all the fluid, told me to step on the brake pedal and fluid was spraying from a line in the engine compartment.

Vehicle made a full stop, driver then continued on and pressed the brake and the brakes went all the way down, brake light went on and dic advised of a brake problem. This has occurred a total of3 different times on this vehicle, each time another area of the linebursting. Each time i have paid more than $185 to have the issue fixed.

We bought the suburban in virginia in 2004 moved to washington state in 2007. Lived there for 4 years and now live in guam which has been for about a year and a half.the 2003 suburban has seen very little snow and when it has the states we have live in use sand and not salt and yes i know guam is a island.while coming home a car pulled infront of us and i had to apply the brakes and the brake pedal went completely to the floor, i barley stopped in time which would of been no problem if they brakes worked normally (note: guam's max speed limit on the island is 35 miles per hour) .still in traffic i hadto find a place to pull off which took about a minute, lucky it was up hill.the service warning came on to check brakes of course at this time they where completely to the floor taking 100 feet to bring the vehicle to a stop thank you k-mart parking lot.the brake reservoir was completely dry and a pool of brake fluid was below the drivers door.there was no warning of this failure they worked fine one minute then not the next. I am now being quoted 1,100.00 dollar repair by the dealership and to top it off it will be atleast 2 weeks to get the parts from detroit since they only use oem parts.not to mention the rental car bill i will racking up in guam.my major concern is 6 years down the road when they fail again will i be so lucky since oem parts are not stainless steel.

Brake lines rusted and failed especially where they attach to the abs mechanism under the driver's side door.

My husband was backing out of the driveway, heard a pop and brake pedal went to floor.luckily no one was hurt. Dealer said front to back brake line corrosion.cost will be $2000 to fix.we see there is a pending investigation on this and want to know status because it seems likely from researching this that a recall is possible.can you provide a status on brake line corrosion investigation among 1999-2003 gm vehicles.not fair that we have to pay $2000 for brake corrosion that should not have happened.please advise if possible.

Brake lines rusted and leaking.brake line to the rear brakes leaking on drivers side about as far back as rear door latch, about half way back of the gas tank. Brake pedal will go to the floor with minimal stopping ability and brake fluid leaks.

My complaint is that gm used substandard materials in of all things the brake lines! i lost all braking ability when one of my brake lines blew due to rust. How does this happen? i should have had at least partial braking ability due to the front and rear lines being separate. Luckily for me this happened right before my families thanksgiving trip, or else we would have been doing 70 on the interstate when this happened! please don't let gm get away with this!

Brake line failure, brake went to the floor.brake line corrosion.

I purchased this vehicle used in october 2019. It has 180,000 miles but is in good overall condition. The problem is not exclusive to this vehicle or even this type of vehicle. The issue is rusty hydraulic brake lines. This problem has plagued older vehicle owners, especially in the rust belt midwest, since hydraulic brakes were invented. Some conscientious manufacturers such as volvo, have switched to a brake line material called cunifer or nicopp, a copper nickel alloy c70600. This material performs like conventional steel lines but without the corrosion problem. I am a ase certified technician, andhave been repairing vehicles as well as restoring cars as a hobby for well over 50 years. Over this time period i have blown many brake lines. I have been lucky in that it never happened to me in an emergency stop where damage and or serious injury could have occurred. This latest incident occurred early in the morning at a stop sign in my residential area. There were no other cars or people around. I applied the brakes the vehicle continued moving as the brake pedal went to the floor. Luckily i was able to slow down turn around and slowly move back into my driveway. Since modern vehicles are lasting longer and do to new vehicle costs motorists are keeping their cars longer. The basic american vehicles brake lines have not changed much in the last 50 years, other than some cheap attempts at external coatings. Why not mandate all manufacturers use the vastly better copper nickel lines. It would definitely save lives and injuries not to mention costly vehicle damage.

My brakes failed on an interstate highway in sw ohio in traffic.i avoided an accident by changing lanes abruptly and coasting to a stop on the side of the road.the repair facility indicated that it was the result of a rusted brake line that failed. The repairs cost me $1300 plus the cost of a rental car while the car was repaired.i understood from the feedback of the repair facility that gm is aware or this defect but has not elevated it to a "recall".it is considered to be a "campaign".i was not informed by anyone, including a dealership/ the car is low mileage, but i do live in the ne where the car has been exposed to chemicals on the road.i had the car at a dealership not more than 2 weeks ago for an air conditioning repair.this issue was not reported to me at that time.

Brake pedal went to floor while wife was driving. Took it to chevy dealership and they said steel brake line had rusted through. Upon inspection they said all steel brake lines needed replacing due to outside rust which i had them do.i live in northern michigan.cant remember cost of chevy dealership replacing all of the steel brake lines.

The brakes on my 2003 suburban failed suddenly with no warning as i was taking the exit ramp off the interstate near my house.i brake sharply when a vehicle cut in front of me from the right travel lane into the exit lane, and the brake pedal suddenly went all the way to the floor.at the moment that happened, the instrument panel chimed continuously and displayed "service brake system".the truck seemed to have no braking power whatsoever, and i had to slow the truck using the emergency brake.i had just driven around 55 miles in heavy traffic on i-95 and the beltway, with traffic often slowing, speeding up, then slowing again, then speeding up again.if this brake failure had occurred then, instead of on the slightly uphill exit ramp off i-66 1/2 mile from my house, it likely would have resulted in a serious crash.after i got the truck home, i saw fluid leaking from the brake line running under the driver's side door.a few days later, i spoke with a service rep at the dealer, who gave me a verbal estimate that replacing just that one brake line would cost around $500, and to replace all of them (which he recommended) would cost around $2000.i had the truck towed in a week or so later and had all of the lines replaced.

Brakes worked fine driving to lumber yard, after loading lumber, and backing up, the brakes pedal went to floorboard.was able to drive to olympia chevrolet dealer about 5 miles away.brake fluid was about halfway down in the brake fluid reservoir.left car for dealer service department to determine cause of brake pedal not having any pressure. Pressing on brake would provide slight braking to slow vehicle.dealer service department called, and said that the brake lines had rusted through, preventing pressure to brakes.i had not noticed any fluid spots in my driveway nor any loss of braking in recent driving.the service department said that all the steel brake lines needed to be replaced and that gm did not have any stock replacement brake lines.this meant that they would have to order brake line tubing and form the brake tubing to fit the vehicle.the cost of this is estimated to be $1,800- $2,000.the vehicle is still at the dealer being repaired.i understand thatthe nhtsais investigating over 110 complaints of similar brake failures on other chevrolet and gm vehicles due to excessive corrosion.please add this complaint to that list.i purchased this suburban new in 2003 and it has been maintained by the dealer and has minimal mileage.i feel this failure should be handled as an recall and the costs paid by gm.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Thankfully in our driveway, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor.and we noticed fluid was leaking from the left rear.our vehicle was towed to our repair shop and the mechanic reported the following: there was heavy rust on the rear differential.the metal brake line at the left rear wheel has a hole rusted through.all of the metal brake lines are in very poor conditiondue to rust contamination.all of the brake lines need to be replaced.i understand that you are investigating a rust issue with the brake lines on 2003 chevy suburbans.we have maintained our vehicle with regular service, and oil changes every 3,000 miles.our suburban looks new inside and out.this is the second issue we have had with excessive rust. In 2008, with less than 50,000 miles on the vehicle, the backing plates rusted and needed to be replaced.thankfully, gm paid for the repair.we take very good care of our vehicles and with 94,038 miles (mostly highway miles), we feel that the brake lines rusting through is not an expected repair.the brakes failing could have had catastrophic consequences.i have read about other people having the same issue with their suburban.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that while decelerating and approaching a traffic stop, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard when depressed. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the technician diagnosed that the brake lines were corroded and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The failure and current mileage was 67,000.

While driving with my family on ny state route 23 east (55 mph zone) toward the intersection of ny state route 32, the traffic light turned yellow.we were about 500 feet away.steady pressureto the brake pedal was applied as would under a normal circumstance.the pedal suddenly went to the floor.the traffic light was now red at about 200 feet away and we were still traveling about 40 mph.i tried the pedal again, however, it went to the floor.without a way to stop, we had no choice but to barrel through a red light with cars in both directions.i repeatedly flashed the head lights and held the horn down to avert catastrophe with the traffic.by the grace of god, we hit no one.over the next half mile, i was able to down shift the automatic transmission and utilize grass on the highway edge to stop the vehicle.upon exit of the vehicle to check it, there was a steady stream of brake fluid coming from a brake along the frame rail by the driver's side front door leaving a 12 - 16" puddle.the vehicle only has 89,000 mostly highway miles and has always been well cared for.luckily no one was killed.this never should have happened.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph in reverse the brakes failed. The abs warning light illuminated while the contact applied the brakes. The vehicle was inspected by the owner when he noticed that the brake line was corroded and there was also a leak. The vehicle had not been inspected by a dealer nor had it been repaired. The failure and current mileages were approximately 93,800.

Doing normal braking, the consumer experienced a soft pedal applicationwhich caused extended stopping distance. The dealer has inspected the vehicle and a manufacturer service rep. Both informed the consumer that was the normal characteristic of that vehicle.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. While driving approximately 40 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal and stated that the brake pedal dropped to the floorboard abnormally. The contact was able to stop the vehicle and place it in park. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed that the brake lines were corroded and was fractured, causing the brake fluid to leak. The vehicle was not repaired. There was an open investigation under nhtsa action number: ea11001 (service brakes, hydraulic service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:hoses, lines/piping, and fittings) that could possibly have been related to the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 86,000.

While attempting to stop my 2003 chevrolet suburban, the brake pedal went to the floor.fortunately there was no traffic and i was able to slow the vehicle using the transmission.i took the car in for repairs and was told the brake lines had corroded and sprung a leak.the service station showed me that all the lines were so corroded that they all needed to be replaced.the total cost for this was about $1500.this truck is kept in southern indiana where snow and ice are not extreme and salting of roads isn't done to the extent as in more nothern climates.

In a situation that required sudden hard braking, i experienced an almost total loss of braking power. The brake pedal went all the way to the floor and the truck required a much greater distance to slow down and stop.there was no advance warning light /sound until after the brake system failure. The repair shop told me one of the metal brake lines had blown out due to severe corrosion, causing a complete loss of brake fluid. The other brake lines were also very corroded and seeping brake fluid.additionally, many other components of the brake system (rotors, calipers, brake hoses, bleed valves, backing plates) were very rusted or deteriorated and falling apart.

Immediately i took the car in to have it looked at, that cost me over $500 to fix. The problem resulted from excessive corrosion because i live in one of the listed snowbelt states. Chevrolet would not assist, acknowledge or help me resolve or fix this issue. I also had to replace the hydo valves discs and rotors all costing me close to $1000. I feel that the 2003 suburban should be added on the recall list mentioned above because the same exact thing happened to my suburban. Thank god my wife and know one else was hurt!

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that both brake lines were covered with rust and were also leaking. The service brake light illuminated on the instrument panel. The dealer and manufacturer told the contact that he had to purchase after market parts. Chevrolet suburban 2003 - complete loss of brakes due to a failed metal break line. Chevrolet dealer has advised me that the brake lines throughout the vehicle are defective because of extensive corrosion and not safe to drive. This vehicle has always been parked on a hard surface and never used in an ocean/ salt waterenvironment. This is a gm defective in the vehicle.

Corrosion on rear driver side brake line caused brake failure, while driving vehicle.such a failure has been reported by many who own this generation of vehicle.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban.while pulling out of a parking lot, the contact approached a stop sign.he depressed the brake pedal and it extended to the floor.all of the instrument panel lights illuminated, which indicated that the brake system failed.the contact had to engage the emergency brake to stop the vehicle.the vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the entire brake line system was rusted.the repair would cost $3,000 to replace the entire brake line system.the failure and current mileages were 94,000. Updated 10/16/08 brake fluid was leaking from the left front of the vehicle. Updated 10/20/08.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban.the contact stated that there was corrosion in one of the brake lines, causing complete brake failure while driving 30 mph.the dealer was notified of the failure, but denied any assistance with repairs to the vehicle. The manufacturer was not contacted and the vehicle was not repaired.the approximate failure and current mileage was 90,000. The vin was unavailable.

While driving at 45 mph on a medium traffic city road, the brakes were applied while stopping for a traffic light that had turned red. The brake pedal did not respond quickly enough and had depressed all the way to the floor. The vehicle was able to slow down enough to be driven into an empty parking lot. As i got the vehicle to stop, i opened the engine compartment and saw the brake fluid level was very low. The vehicle had its preventative maintenance done on it just three weeks prior and all fluids were checked topped off (all of which is documented by an oil and lube garage). I was able to get the vehicle back to my home and had inspected the issue. An area along the frame rail were the brake lines go from the master cylinder to the abs motor was leaking. The brake lines were severely corroded in just one area, inspection of the rest of the brake lines were ok. Its just odd that it was corroded in just the one area and nowhere else. There was no warning that the brakes were about to fail or any indication that the fluid level was low.

The rear brake line broke.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that while driving 3 mph, the brakes malfunctioned and the contact had to utilize the emergency brake to stop the vehicle.the vehicle was towed to an automotive shop where it was diagnosed it that due to corrosion, the brakes had ruptured. The dealer was not contacted nor was the vehicle completely repaired. The failure mileage was 77,000 and the current mileage was 77,050.

When i was backing out of a parking space i put on my brakes and they went down to the floor,i had to be towed to a chevy dealer, when the car was put up on the lift they discovered all metal brake lines were rusted, out the dealer claims chevy is not at fault that it was caused by roadsalt,i have owned cars for over sixty years and i have lived in the same area for seventy years and i have never had metal brake lines rust out, i feel that chevy used inferior metal for there brake lines. They are billing me $4000.00 to replace brake lines plus whatever has to go with it. If i had been driving on the highway and this happened there would have been serious injures and even deaths.

At 45 mph vehicle jerked, and the tires squealed. Vehicle made it to its destination, and it was discovered that abs brakes were defective. Dealer could not find any defect.

While driving 60 mph vehicle lost power steering, andconsumer had difficulty maintaining control of the vehicle.consumer applied the brake pedal andbrakes failed. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection. The cause of the failurehad not been determined.

Dt*: the contact stated while regular maintenance was being performed the dealership determined the brake rotors needed to be replaced. The repair should be performed within the next 1,000 miles. The brake pads do not need to be replaced.

I have a 2003 chevy suburban that has a clunking noise in the steering.while turning atspeed or simply correcting as driving.i have noticed many other complaints on the site about it but it appears gm is not paying for a recall on this issue.has anything been done on gm's behalf to pay for these repairs or am i stuck fixing this? the vehicle has also become very loose when driving.

Re defective steering column for a2003 chevy suburban, reply attn esther clark.the consumer took the vehicle to have it inspected and he was informed the intermediate shaft was defective.the consumer was then told the part was on national backorder and it took over several months for the part to arrive.

The consumer is experiencing problems with the steering wheel. When driving, the vehicle will jerk to the right. Owner has contacted the dealer and was told that the parts needed to repair the defect are on back order.provide further details.

Numerous problems, replaced steering shaft, inner tie rods, front shock absorbers, idler arm and relay rod, power steering pump and gear assembly.the consumer stated that the steering wheel leads itself and essentially locks into a hard right or left turn and rarely automatically releases from the turn by itself.continued problems with the front end alignment.the four tires were cupped.*tc

Looking for a consumer recall report. No incident occurred.attempted to register with data base.

Vehicle spontaneously lost all steering.steering wheel simply rolled around on the steering column while in motion.

I have a2003 suburban that makes a clunking noise when steering.the steering also feels loose.i took it to the dealer for a brake inspection while under warranty.i also told them about this clunking noise.they said it always happens and that they would tighten it up.this however is not on my invoice only the brake inspection.brakes came back fine(although they still squeak) and they said that they tightened the steering problem up.car was still under warranty.now i have 41,000 miles on it and we are going to l.a. For thanksgiving.i took it to the shop of my choice for once again a brake inspection and this clunking noise in the steering.upon arrival to the shop the owner has an 02 silverado and said he had the same problem which was corrected by chevy.apparently they are replacing the steering shaft now.before they were removing it and lubing it and then putting it back.when my mechanic asked if they would cover it they said no because the warranty was expired even though i brought it in before for this but i have no documentation to support this.my mechanic asked to get the part but unfortunately it is on national back order.sounds like chevy is going through quite a bit of these, this should be recalled in my opinion.i know another person with a silverado hd and his clunks also.i'm not sure when the part will be available and don't know if it is dangerous to be driving.i have had no injuries or crashes from this yet.please help if possible.thank you.

I have a 2003 chevrolet suburban that has a steering /clunking noise in the intermediate steering shaft. I have called many dealers and they said it is a known problem and the parts are on order, i checked other customer complaint sites and many people have been waiting for the parts for over 6 months. My dealer told me he has a list of people that have been waiting for over 4 months. Has anything been done about this problem or is gm disregarding the defect in the parts. When will my suburban be fixed, if at all ?

The steering shaft needed to be replaced because the ability to maintain control of the vehicle was difficult. The manufacturer was contacted by consumer and was aware of the problem. Shaft was replaced.*tc

Complaint received via e-mail.i visited the local chevrolet dealership service department. The previous day i had taken my 2003 suburbanpurchased new from the local dealer to an independent repair service shop to find out what was wrong with my truck. I was advised i had a lot of slack and vibration at both ends of my steering column. I had loud popping noise coming from this area while driving. When the wheels turned they did not turn smoothly, but roughly, and jumped in the turning process as though it stopped and started continuously. The repair shop had sincere concerns that this problem could be very dangerous, and since the vehicle was still under full bumper to bumper warranty, they recommended that i take it back to the local dealer. The service dealership knew exactly what was wrong, and stated that it was a very common problem with this type of vehicle. Mechanichad to order the repair parts, which would take 3 to 4 weeks. Nevertheless, i waited for the dealership to call me when the parts came in. After over a month i called title back, and he again said it could be 3 or 4 weeks before they come in, and they would call me. As of the date of this letter i never been notified that these parts were received. Apparently, they could not get the parts needed to do the warranty repairs.the consumer stated that the wheels jump when the vehicle is turning.*tc

I would think something as important as "steering" column problems would result in a recall. Please help!!

Loose motion in steering and knocking sound.had to wait on repair due to dealer informing us of backorders on intermediate shafts.dealer had said there were many complaints of this same nature.we also had 2 family members to have theirs repaired.dealer repaired, but we had to pay for all repairs.

When turning a corner steering column shook and made a clanking noise. Dealer stated intermediate shaft failed, and they were awaiting information from the manufacturer to make the repairs.

The power steering would go out intermittently and momentary while turning at low speed. The vehicle is at the dealer being inspected. The problem has not been determined.*tc

The contact owned a 2003 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that while towing his daughter's vehicle at about 60 mph, another vehicle crashed into the vehicle being towed. The air bags did not deploy. The contact sustained a head and lower back injury. The front passenger (his daughter) sustained a back injury. The two went to the doctor three days later. There was no police report. The vehicle being towed was damaged and was driven to the daughter's dorm where it was totaled by the insurance company. The dealer and the manufacturer were not contacted. The contact stated that the other driver's insurance denied any compensation to the contact, stating that the contact's vehicle (the vehicle towing the damaged vehicle) was not hit. The contact stated that after the accident, a loud noise was heard whenever the vehicle was turned on. The contact also stated that the dashboard was cracked. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 173,000.

I was driving my friend to work in ok 4/30/14.. I have no recollection of what instigated our head on collision but i have several injuries, had to cut out of the dashboard and airlifted to ou medical ctr. In ok city.. Shattered ankles/feet, broken neck including sustainable facet disruption that is permanent and 8 broken ribs combined both r & l due to severe impact with out any airbag deployment. Asherbridgecrash.com and i was in the white suburban.

I noticed a sound like that from an open window and check all driver and passenger windows verifying that they were closed.upon utilization of the rear hatch, it was noted that one of the two (50%) latches that hold the rear window/door to the car had separated.i brought it to chevrolet dealer at the time and was told there was nothing they could do.they did not consider the doors as required or this to be a safety issue.at the time, i found 1000's of people online complaining about the same issue. I'm sure that this has increased 10 fold since then. I only use this car as a 2nd car now and do not utilize it daily.i fear that the 2nd rear window/door latch will also fail and cause the entire window/door to separate from the vehicle thus landing on the highway behind me (hopefully) or on the poor family in the vehicle behind me (worse case). Unfortunately, i live in the washington dc area where people like to tailgate.traveling on highways with the wind rushing through the window causing additional stress on the latch make the later scenario more deadly and more of a reality. Gm/chevrolet should fix what seems to me as a minor repair to ensure the safety of the general publicwhy hasn't this been addressed if so many people are having issues with the latch?

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban.the contact attempted to close the window on the hatchback, but it would not close.the contact noticed that the hinge on the passenger side was detached from the vehicle and the rear window was hanging from the hinge.the dealer stated that they would perform a diagnostic test for $99 to determine the cause of failure.the current and failure mileages were 149,830.

2003 chevy suburban 1500 (52,000 miles) with rear hatch. Recently one of the sides of the wind rear hatch snapped in half. This is a plastic piece bolted on to the vehicle structure. When i called a local chevrolet dealer to inquire if there may be a recall the answer was no, but they see the problem often. Often tells me this is an engineering problem and should be fixed and not at the consumers expense. It is dangerous and may cause personal injury.

Like many others.....the passenger side of the lift gate glass has come unbonded on my 2003 suburban.

Does not occur on straight smooth roads.has happened since purchasing vehicle.took to dealer multiple times and nothinghas improved nor has any real diagnosis been made (they refuse to if you insist).has occured since the first day of purchasing vehicle.<p>exact same problem with 2002 silverado, discussed and resolved on edmunds.com:http://townhall-talk.edmunds.com/[email protected]@.ef12499<p>other very similar nhtsa complaints/odi:complaint # 10045857"consumer purchased 2003 chevrolet suburban has repeadedly taken vehicle to dealer due to the vehicle suddenly pulling into on coming traffic when mild winds occur."<p>complaint # 10058005"while driving at any speed and while making right or left steering became loose"<p>complaint # 10025081 (2003 silverado)"while driving the vehicle pulled to the left. While driving 40 mph vehicle vibrated uncontrollably. Consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection.mechanic determined that vehicle needed an alignment.however, the problem recurred.the consumer had the front end aligned and the front shock replaced but the problem is intermittent.*tc

Consumer purchased 2003 chevroletsuburban has repeadedly taken vehicle to dealer due to the vehicle suddenly pulling into on coming traffic when mild winds occur.

Looking for a consumer recall report. No incident occurred.attempted to register with data base.

Vehicle was taken to the dealer because the tire treads on the frontwere worn out. Dealer stated tires wore out because the consumer didn't rotate the tires since purchasing the vehicle. Consumer went to a firestone tire dealer, whoinsistedthat tiresshould not wear out due to rotation, but there was somethingwrong with the balance of the vehicle.

While driving, the vehicle pulled to the left.the owner had difficulty maintaining control.the vehicle was over calibrated.however, the vehicle was still pulling to the left.also, the owner has had 11 new tires in the first 12,000 miles.the dealer also performed a straight track adjustment.however, the problem still exist.*sc 8jb

The factory trailer hitch on my 2003 chevy suburban broke while i was towing a travel trailer.the welds were improperly done.the "u" bracket that holds the square receiver tore as if weak metal.

Coating of radio buttons is peeling or coming off.

Speedometer failed intermittently for a period of about six months then stopped working all together.i am told by dealer and other suburban owners that this is a common occurrence.

I have a 2003 chevreolet suburban that has a faulty, racing speedometer. I just saw a news report on cbs television about this problem. My dealer told me it was just my car. Now i see many cars may have the same problem. The speedometer randomly races to a very high and incorrect speed.

Dt: contact stated while driving the speedometer malfunctioned, and at different speeds it stuck. This occurred more frequently when it was hot outside or when the cluster panel heatedup.

Speedometer quits registering speed of vehicle at times, the odometer continues to work. Next time driving vehicle speedometer works.dealer said this is a very common occurrence and eventually the speedometer will quit and i will have to buy a new one.i do feel that a non working speedometer is a safety issue.

2003 chevrolet suburban- racing speedometer- bouncing from 0 to 120, now stuck past 120. No way to determine speed.many reports of this problem-- but no recall as of yet- big bucks to replace unit.

Dt*: the contact stated the speedometer and tachometerstopped working without prior warning.the contact took the vehicle to a dealer.although the dealer did not inspect or repair the vehicle the mechanic determinedthe speedometer cluster gear failed and would need to be replaced. Updated 01/25/06.

Driving on cruise control at 45 mph. Then, we turn off cruise control, but speedometer stays at 45mph. Occurs once or twice a month. Have been stopped by the police once for driving to slow. Corrected by turning car on and off three or four times in a row.

My 2003 chevy suburban speed odometer is malfunctioning. When at a complete stop it reads 30 mph and when driving on the highway it will go to 120mph and sometimes past that. Vehicle just hit 50000 miles. This is very dangerous safey problem that can lead to accidents and speeding tickets caused by a known malfunction in gm vehicles. The cost of repairing this problem is very expensive and should not be an out of pocket expense.

Speedodometer on my 2003 chevrolet suburban is failing. I have inquired the dealer about a recall, repair, without success. I have read that the speed odometer has been failing for many gm owners but gm will not recall the defective odometer.

2003 chevy z71 sub speed odometer is not working correctly. Will work one day and be off by more than 80mph the same day. Gm will not do anything to assist and can lead to accident as well as tickets as we have no idea of what speed we are traveling.

Vehicle: 2003 chevy suburban crash:as vehicle was slowing down to an approaching intersection with a stop sign (in a neighborhood) speed limit approx 25, the vehicle suddenly accelerated to high rate of speed (cruise control activated) causing driver loss of control, vehicle left the road hitting a mailbox, telephone pole and final impact (t-boned) with a parked ford f150 extra cab pickup truck sitting in a driveway with a lawn trailer attached.suburban engine continued to accelerate after impact pushing both vehicles (and the trailer) approximately 50 feet. No air-bag deployments even though front bumper was in the interior of the pickup truck and seat belts did not lock or hold.both vehicles total lossinjuries:all4 passengers in the vehicle sustained minor injuries driver - broken nose from mirror knocked into the vehicle from impact with telephone pole, severe chest/abdomen bruising contact with steering wheel, multiple cuts and abrasions from flying debris & glass.passenger back left - cuts & abrasions from glass & debris and bruising front passenger - deep tissue/bone bruising on both legs, and right knee, bruising on both arms and chest.passenger back right - bruising on knees and feet.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet suburban.while the vehicle was parked in the contact's garage, she noticed that the rear window hinges separated from the body of the vehicle.the contact did not notice any differences in the vehicle prior to the failure.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and the contact was informed that the rear window needed to be replaced.the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer.the current and failure mileages were 85,000.

I initially noticed a problem closing the rear window and also noticed the hinge connecting the window to the vehicle on the passenger side appeared to be cracked or broken.even though i rarely use the window, eventually the hinge completely broke and the passenger side of the window pulled completely away from the vehicle. The window is raised up so there is a large space between the window and the vehicle on the passenger side.the glass could easily become fully detached from the vehicle and fall off, possibly while the car is being driven.it seems, based on the number of complaints i have seen, that the hinge is defective but gm will not admit this and, therefore, will not pay for the repair.

While parkedrear window exploded without warning.

Passenger side, glued-on hinge to hatchback glass failed.hinge separated from glass causing glass to fall toward child, standing near rear of vehicle.glass is a large, heavy panel and should be secured with more reliable material.search of internet (to find proper fix to problem) found hundreds of similar incidents and little satisfaction from dealership.my dealership refused to assist with any glass related issues. Cost $900 to repair.

While parked in a parking garage with the rear hatch open (retrieving items from the back) the rear window exploded without any sort of contact or apparent cause.owner was injured by exploding glass.

Rear window blew out unexpectedly whileconsumer went to lock the vehicle. Consumer contacted manufacturer since the window could have injured the back passengers.

The back liftgate window on my 2003 chevrolet suburban unexpectedly exploded while the car was sitting in my driveway. The car had been parked for a couple hours and was sitting in the shade on a nice warm but not hot day.i was about 40 feet away when it happened and hear the loud noise.nobody was near the car and no known object hit the glass to cause it to break.glass pieces were thrown ~10 feet from the car and some glass was also inside the car. The frame of the window was still latched but was bent outward.the hydraulic lifts were extended.the car was still under its warranty period but the dealer would not accept it as a warranty claim because he couldn't verify that something didn't hit the window.i suspect there may be a design flaw or installation flaw that placed too much stress on the window.a new window was ordered and installed at the dealer.

While driving 70 mph, the driver's side window exploded out of the vehicle without warning. The consumer states that, "there was no objects that hit the window.

Windshield wipers will not stop working.fuse must be removed to stop wipers from constantly operating.intermittent feature does not work.

Sun visor was defective. While driving sun visor fell down, blocking the driver's view. Consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer, and was told thatwarrantyexpired, and consumer would have to pay for repairs.*tc
