Last year the odometer and gear selection display on my 2002 chevy suburban would go out then a while later it would come back on. This went on for a couple of months with the display staying off for longer and longer times. Around december 2013, the display went out permanently. I took my 2002 suburban for the required smog test on april 28,2014 and since there was no odometer mileage displayed ( even after pressing the odometer button with the engine off ), the technician had to put down "none" under mileage. The situation of not having a display for displaying what gear you are in is a safety issue! a person might accidentally put the vehicle in drive instead of reverse. Also without an odometer, it is going to be hard to estimate the mileage when selling the vehicle.
While starting the vehicle it caught on fire. The fire department extinguished the fire. The vehicle was towed to a garage for inspection. The cause has not been determined at this time. Please provide further details.
Speedometer on 2002 and 2003 model of chevrolet suburban sticks at a random place. We have been pulled over twice by police for driving too slow. Happened more than once.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that a toddler was able to insert and turn the key in the ignition to the accessory position. The child was also able to shift the gear shift selector without engaging the brakes, and the vehicle began to roll away. The vehicle jumped a retaining wall and crashed into a tree. There were no injuries reported. The vehicle was taken to a personal mechanic who could not determine the failure.the manufacturer was notified and advised the contact that the vehicle could be shifted without engaging the brakes for towing purposes. The contact was advised not to leave the keys near children. The failure and current mileages were 128,000.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban. The contact smelled a smoke odor coming from the air conditioner and the vehicle caught fire on the passenger side. The contact extinguished the fire before the fire department arrived. There were no injuries and a fire report was not filed. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The failure mileage was 193,337.
We went on a fishing trip from wilson, nc to new port news. I drove all the way there with no problem. We arrived at the james river bridge and my truck cut off. It crunk up and rolled a little then died again. It took me 25 minutes to park. I had to wait until it decided to stay on. Wefished then we left the next morning. My truck drove good with no problem. It normally takes us 2 hrs. To get back home. My truck stared cutting off again when we got 40 miles from home. It took 4 1/2 hrs. To get homefrom 40 miles away. It was so hot. My family had to wait along a hot, long, lonely highway. It started cutting off more. I had the fuel pump changed and also the filter. It hasn't cut off today but the engine light has come back on. It's been 3 days since those parts was replaced. I don't know why my service engine light is back on. It was off before it started cutting off. Now it stays on and never goes off.
Left-side engine manifold bolts broke off, causing exhaust gas to escape into the engine compartment on the opposite side of the firewall from the driver. The escaping exhaust causes a 'ticking' noise, which is what brought this to the attention of the owner (me). The vehicle is well-maintained and is never used in harsh or demanding conditions. Primary use is transporting family in urban area. There has been no prior service work that required manifold to be removed. The manifold bolts are defective. This is a serious safety and epa issue due to exhaust gases being released in the engine compartment, and the possibility of the heat from the exhaust negatively affecting sensors and other vital engine components.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban.while driving approximately 40 mph, the check coolant warning light illuminated on the instrument panel.the illumination continued until coolant was added to the tank.the contact observed a gradual cooling loss over a period of time, but there was no evidence of a leak.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and they stated that there was a crack in the cylinder head, and coolant was leaking in the oil chambers.the mechanic stated that the cylinder head needed to be replaced.the failure and current mileages were 96,000.updated 07/16/08.*ljupdated 07/16/08
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled while driving between 30-60 mph. A charging light also illuminated as the vehicle stalled. The contact coasted to a stop and was able to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the crank shaft position sensor was replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 85,000. .updated 06/18/12 the consumer stated when the engine stopped, there was no power steering and only one power assisted brake application, which almost resulted in an accident. Updated 06/22/12 updated 06/26/12 the consumer referenced recall # 07v521000 regarding the crankshaft position sensor. Updated 06/27/12
While driving any speed vehicle stalled.consumer managed to pull over, and restarted the vehicle. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
Exhaust manifold bolts breaking leaving studs in the heads, heating up engine compartments, releases carbon monoxide, affects o2 sensor and catalytic converter. Will not pass emissions in some states. Gm not standingbehind this 1999-2008 issue. It is a safety issue and is expensive to fix. Gm mechanics denyingany such issues. Please check- in to this. The consumers noticed the day that they had purchased the vehicle that the coolant light was on as they test drove.the salesman said that the gasket was loose and will be taken care of.in may of 2002 the coolant light had come on again.the vehicle was taken to the service man and he said that it was hot and the coolant evaporated.*scc
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban. While traveling at65 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. Two weeks later, the failure recurred. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. The current and failure mileages were 167,000.
Since purchasing an 02 chevrolet surburban, 8.1l and 81k miles, i have experienced multiple random engine shut offs while highway driving, creating dangerous safety situations.the motor will restart after a 5 minute rest period and run fine, until the next failure which occurs without warning.the dealership has so far been unable to diagnose the problem, cleaned maf sensor, replaced thermostat and fan clutch, changed oil, checked fuel pump pressure.no engine failure codes reported.researching internet information, i have discovered a recurring symptom related to an intermittent crankshaft position sensor (ckp) failure, that causes the engine to shut off.there is a a timed reset which allows the engine to restart.
While driving vehicle losses power, reduced engine power light comes on. I have taken the suburban to the mechanic. Change the maf, tps, air filters other sensors that the diagnostic test has pointed out as problems and have had a vehicle tune up done (new spark plugs, wires, oil changed, etc.) the cost of these repairs has been over $1000 and seem i will be spending more. The problem continues to happen. Reduced engine power while driving. I am afraid this could cause an accident and cause injuries or even death since it happens while driving.
Road side assistance complaint.mrthe consumer stated the vehicle would not start, there was a problem with the transmissionand the box for the 4-wheel drive.
Vehicle shuts itself down while in motion, it does not matter if i am accelerating, maintaining speed, or coming to a stop. When the vehicle shuts down i loose my power brakes and steering.i am in constant fear that it may shutdown on me when i am trying to cross busy traffic. This problem is a definite safety hazard.........

(1) the engine stopped while on interstate in construction zone on slight hill,it would not restart.(2) the construction zone on interstate 10 was approximately 3 mile long with very narrow lanes and concrete construction barriers on each side & no shoulders.bumper to bumper traffic and no way to clear the lane or get tow vehicle.(3) a good samaritan towed our vehicle about 2 miles to first point clear traffic.chevy dealer confirmed fuel pump in tank had failed & replaced pump.this was second pump failure.the pump previously failed and was replaced on 30 aug 03.previous failure dealer said keep fuel above25% & engine would run. The tank was at 44% when engine quit.fuel tank was topped off before pump tested, engine would run but no pump pressure.someone will be killed if more failures occur in heavy traffic areas.the emergency good samaritan tow out of the construction area prevented a serious accident as it was getting dark.
I am the owner of a 2002 chevy suburban, v8 engine.approximately 8 months ago my car began making terrible noises.took it to my local chevy dealer who informed me i had broken exhaust manifold bolts.and it would cost over $1000 to repair!i did not have the money to fix it and dealer said it wouldn't hurt car to continue driving.in july of 2010, my check engine light kept coming on and took it to get repaired.i was told i needed to replace my catalytic converters.$800 later i thought they were separate problems.i come to realize that it was directly related to the bolt issue.through my research, i have learned this is a very common problem with gm cars. Why wasn't there a recall?????i feel duped by gm and my government. *ln
The vehicle is producingtoxic fumes from the air vents. This caused injuries to driver'seyes.
When driving the air vent released toxic fumes.the driver and passengersbecame sick and dizzy. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer on six different occasions. However, thedealer was unable to duplicate the problem
Was driving home from a vacation about 30 mi east of pa/oh border. A/c suddenly went from cold to hot. We turned off a/c. When we took to local mechanic, metal shards throughout a/c system from compressor, had to replace entire a/c system at a cost of over $1700.want to add that dealer has been very nice about purchase and problems - they explained that car is out of warranty.
Consumer noticed thatair conditioner lost power and hot air came out from the vents area.consumer contacted the dealer for this problem.mechanic advisedconsumer4 to contact another source .at this point warranty expired.
Air conditioner compressor needs to be replaced.only 66k miles.heard a loud grinding noise when accelerating with a/c on.took it to dealership and was told compressor needed to be replaced.
Dt:2002 chevrolet suburban, anti lock brakes failed to stop the vehicle when driving at slow speeds, when consumer pressed on thek brakes the vehicle slowed down , but did not completely stop the vehicle, consumer has to pump the brakes to get the vehicle to stop, consumertook vehicle to the dealer, who told himthat the problem was that the hub assembly sensors needing replacement.the dealer said that vehicle was no longer under warranty, air conditioning core leaksed in the front and the rear of the vehicle. Those were the only known problems with the vehicle at this time.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban.the contact heard a knocking sound coming from the wheels when the front wheels were turned.she stated that the cause of failure may be the upper intermediate steering shaft.the dealer and manufacturer stated that she would have to pay $275 for the repair.the dealer did not have any recalls for the failure.the contact feels that there should be a recall due to the many repairs related to the wheel failure.she stated that a running board light is dim on the front left side of her vehicle, which she has noticed on many suburbans.the current mileage is 65,000 and failure mileage was 40,000.updated 02-01-08.
I recently purchased a 2002 suburban z71.while driving at night, i pushed the dome override switch a few times and my headlights went out.lucky i wasn't traveling around a curve and was able to bring the vehicle to stop without completely running of the road. (i was traveling 50 mph on a country road)i then read my owners manual and learned that the automatic headlight system will shut off the headlights if the dome switch in pushed (in-out-in-out) regardless if the vehicle is in motion or stopped. I believe the headlight override feature should only work while the vehicle is in park.permitting the automatic headlight over ride feature to shut off your headlights while the vehicle is moving will cause accidents. I had a near miss the headlights should never be permitted to shut off by a switch labeled "dome override" while the vehicle is in motion & it is dark out.dt
While driving the headlights shut off and on every ten minutes without warning.the dealer is aware of the problem.please provide any additional information.*nlm
I have a new 2002 chevy suburban that i bought in nov, 2002. I have driven it approx 3000 miles. The headlights go out while driving. Luckily , i haven't wrecked yet or killed anyone but nobody will ride with me now. I'd like this to be taken care of by me getting another vehicle in the same style and model. It has been in the garage , this time for 9 days and they still got it. I need a vehicle !i was hoping for this much money it would last longer than this.
Headlights on late model suv's (suburban used as example) are aimed too high, blinding sedan drivers. Thank you for your consideration.
During cold weather seasons, after starting the vehicle, the consumer smelled gas fumes inside the vehicle. The cause has yet to be determine. The dealership was notified but did not resolve the problem.

When the vehicle was refueled, fuel spilled onto the ground.
When driving at 60mph in heavy traffic the engine quit running twice in less than 20 miles.the dealer said it was due to defective fuel pump and the design of the fuel pump and gas tank, which they said could not be fixed.vehicle had more than 1/2 gas full in its tank.on several other occasions, the car would not start even with a 1/4 tank of gas.i was told by dealer not to let the tank get less than 1/4 full.the dealer replaced the fuel pump 3 times, and the car has less than 20,000 miles on it.*la
Vehicle will stall on occasion while driving down the road.acts as if the accelerator is not working causing the vehicle to come to a stop while trying to apply the accelerator pedal.this has happened at least 3 other times since purchasing the vehicle new.the first incident happened at about 10,000 miles on the vehicle and the last incident happened with a little over 120,000.
I have a 2002 suburban that had a recall for the gas tank leaking when it is filled past 3/4 full.the recall work was done in december 2005.then in march i smelt gas again i noticed a large puddle was under my vehicle as i pulled out of the garage.i carried it back in and they charged me $890.00 and stated since the recall work was done in december this would not be covered.i have the parts they replaced.
My wife and i have been very happy with the vehicle until a situation last year.specifically, there is a known problem with the gas tank and gauge. The gas tank will be a 1/4 full but the car will not start because it thinks the gas tank is empty. My local gm dealer service center quoted me over $800 to fix this problem. It is a known gm defect. Gm's technical solution is document id # 1575648. It reads:vehicle with flexible fule (rpo l59) will not start, stalls and will not restart, loss of power, poor performance, and /or fuel guage reads inaccurate/incorrect (replace fuel sender/module assembly) #04-06-04-012b - (dec 6, 2004)* replace fuel sender /module assembly with redesigned fuel strainer and /or redsigned fuel level senorcan you please help ?thanks, brendan and lisa o'reilly.
2 seconds after starting the vehicle it stalled. Then, consumer restarted the vehicle, and the failure recurred within 2 seconds.dealership indicated that they had a lot ofcomplaints on this issue, and it could be due tofuel injection or fuel pump problems. Dealership performed a diagnostic test, but not failure was found.
2002 chevrolet suburban that stalls intermittently while driving down the road.this has happened several times in the past two weeks.we took it into the service center where they have told us that the fuel pump will need to replaced at a cost of over $700.there is currently a recall on 2001 models with the exact same problem.

During evacuation for hurricane rita as we were proceeding in traffic our 2002 chevy suburban just died.it was as if it was getting no fuel. We had a full tank. The rpm and power steering along with the engine just went dead.since the hurricane i have talk to 3 other people with suburbans or yukons that this happen to. The dealership said it was the fuel pump. I now think something is wrong with these vehicles.i have the fuel pump taken from my suburban.
Purchased a new 2002 suburban k2500 in aug of 2002.at 17,000 miles, the air conditioning went out.dealer replaced the compressor. At 27,000 miles, the fuel gauge showed empty when the tank was full.dealer replaced rear fuel tank sending unit.at 55,000 miles, the fuel tank again showed empty with a full tank and the engine surged.the dealer (bob steele in cocoa fl) replaced the fuel pump in the rear tank and the sending unit in the front tank under my extended warranty with a deductible.dealer stated this was not a recurrence of the problem before.at 58,000 miles the car stalled while crossing over a busy bridge/causway at approx. 60 mph."reduced engine power" glared on the warning indicator, power steering was lost and lights on the dash were flashing erratically.luckily, i had crested the top of the causway and managed to steer to the tiny shoulder without crashing into anybody.the car would not start immediately, but after trying for fifteen minutes i was able to get it started and drive home.i called the dealer (it was five minutes to closing time) and was told to bring it in the next day.it stalled again at a traffic light on the way to the dealer but started immediately.the dealer replaced the throttle position sensor under my extended warranty with deductible and again stated that none of these fuel/stalling problems were related.the car stalled again recently and the dealer said to bring it in if it happens again. This is starting to become a very dangerous situation that the dealer seems to be very unconcerned about.

2002 suburban z71.the fuel filter on the vehicle is not the filter referenced for the vehicle in the owners manual.we were told that due to an engineering oversight, the filter was changed to the one we have.the problem exists in that quick disconnect is too close to the filter housing, and the normal removal tool cannot be used to remove the filter.gm service personnel will tell you offline, that the best method for removal is sawing off the filter or crimping it off.with the gm customer service on the line -they are required to tell you that a special tool not available in automotive stores must be used to remove the filter.we finally received a reference to the sole manufacturer of the $35 dollar plastic tool.the tool only works by forcing4 pieces of plastic through the small space and the up the neck.as stated, off line, the mechcanic will tell you that they cut or saw it off, and dig the filter neck out of the disconnect.the problem is obvious, but the solution is impossible. The hazard is that the true mechanic recommendation results in cutting metal on a gas line.in addition, with it being on the outboard side, on fragments enter directly into the engine.

My 2002 chevrolet suburban will not start once the gas tank gets below 1/4 full. I park in my driveway that has a slight slope to the street and it does not matter which way i pull the vehicle in, it will not start with a low (less than 1/4 tank) amount of gas in the tank. I have spoke to the service manager at the chevrolet dealership and he informs me that chevy has not notified him that their is a problem. I have spoke to one other person and he has the exact same problem with his suburban of the same year. There is a problem and i believe it to be something with the fuel pickup design in these vehicles. I have heard of no recall, or attempt to correct this, because it probably would be very costly to gm. It is a large inconvenience to me and has happened more than four times. *la
After fueling vehicle thenight before therewas a puddle of fuel underneathvehicle, the next day the vehicle was taken to the dealer who sad it was caused by a defect in the fuel tank.*mj
Consumer states that fuel tank assembly has a malfunction. When consumer is putting fuel into his vehicle the nozzle at the gas station keep cutting off, which indicates that the tank is full, but the tank isn't. So you have to keep fueling and esitmating when the tank is full. Nlm
When filling the gas tank, the pump cuts off at 3/4 full.when i try to fill it all the way, it over flows onto the ground after the pump cuts off again.the dealer (team chevrolet) says there is nothing wrong with the tank.they say it is the gas station i am using or i should just hold the gas nozzle myself until it is full.
Consumer states the can't get no gas at all due to fuel tank is not ventilate. Dealer notified many times. Please provide further information.
They really should fix. No safety defectlisted.
I have been unable, since purchase, to properly fill the gas tank.the tanks have been replaced, the filler mechanism has been replaced.gmc acknowledges that ther is a problem but six months after first identifying the problem, they say they still dont have a fix.i see from checking consumer complaints that other owners are experiencing the same difficulties and are concerned about the possibility of gas fume buildup and possible explosion.

While driving vehiclecompletely shut down. Consumer had to wait for about 15 minutes before starting it again. Consumer stated that he had this problem since purchasing the vehicle. It stalled intermittently. Consumer had the fuel pump replaced a total of five times. Also, fuel filter had to be replaced several times. The consumer stated that onstar called the problem code red.consumer was told not to drive the vehicle. At 70 mph the vehicle would surge and lurch. The consumer stated that a clunking noise is heard when turning tight corners.*tc
Chrysler cannot find the fuel rail in us or canada. I cant walk and had i not gotten disabled and had to go to canada, at families due to child and i being assaulted and injured.have government documents showing we entered country due to statement above. Car not used, garaged for several years but turned on periodically so car would not die and fluids changed.would have filed the lemon law back then!i am looking into arbitration ,ftc or media. I have contacted mechanics for receipts and testimony. Due to engine light never going off , air bag light, and gears would switch themselves and all dials would go crazy all this work has been done:new computerstartercatalytic converterevap leaks, changed partsno breaks while driving, breakline brokegas cap, sensorsmufflertires 4new batteryplus, plus, plusnow no part, fuel rail discontinued. Car can go on fire if driven.car only has 65,000 original miledchrysler cust. Svc, told me to sell it to someone else. Fuel rail discontinued , so they will go on fire?? or sell for scrap? cars are supposed to last more than 65,000.this is negligence and u have endangered my family more than once. Mechanic said lucky , cant drive at all. In pkg lot. Cant walk, need car. Trade it for one of similar value and mileage. Spent nearly 7,000. Fixing. Now disabled and dont have money. Also expect refund for radio recall.
The rear fuel tank strap broke by the bolt. The strap then pivoted down onto the drive shaft. The only reason the tank did not hit the road is because of the strength of the fuel filler hoses from the gas cap.
Backing to hook up to trailer, brakes failed no prior warning (light). All brake lines need replaced as well as fuel lines beginning to leak and will soon need replaced.
The dome light switch can be used to override the daytime running lamps, by pushing it in and out twice.the drls are turned off and a bell notifies you.this can be done at any vehicle speed/ gear.this dome light switch is similar in shape and size to the fog lamp switch right next to it, and at night while driving it is difficult to tell the difference which one is being pressed.the problem lies with the fact that at night when the car is started, the headlights come on automatically, how nice.however, if you hit the override switch twice the headlights go off leaving you in the dark, wherever you may be.it seems that the drls are not aware whether it is day or night.if you turn the headlight switch to on this does not happen.
Dashboard lights are too bright.consumer is unable to see speed. Dashboard lights can not be dimmed to remove glare out of the driver's window and side view mirror.
Consumer state vehicle does not have warning indication light stating door ajar. Manufacturer has been contacted.
The consumers noticed that the dome light goes out after 30 seconds and is inoperable.*scc
As i was driving my pre-school daughter to school i heard a wind noise. I stopped to check and found out after more than 2 miles the door was not closed.. This vehicle is for family... It should be family friendly... No warning as to the door being ajar.. How do i get this fixed to keep my family safe? *nlm
2002 chevy suburban parking brake failed due to a design flaw that affects hundreds of thousands 1999 through 2003 gm vehicles. Most owners are probably unaware their vehicle has this defect, since the transmission prevents vehicle movement when in park. The parking brake on these gm vehicles is a drum brake on the rear wheels. The emergency brake drum, and disc brake rotor is combined into a single unit on these vehicles. Parking brake pads are mounted on a circular metal ring, which has about a 2 inch gap at the top. The ring expands when the parking brake is applied.unlike typical drum brake pads, the circular ring is not well secured to prevent undesirable movement within the drum. Usually, drum brake pads are secured by heavy springs to keep them centered within the drum. On these gm vehicles, however, there is just a slide-in clip at the bottom of the circular metal ring to which the pads are attached. This allows the brake pads to move within the drum when the parking brake is not in use. On my vehicle, the circular ring was pulled down be gravity, resulting in it continually riding against the drum. This wore out the pads on the bottom of the circular ring to the point where metal was contacting metal. This caused extensive wear to the drum, removing over 1/16 inch of metal. In february 2003, gm released service bulletin number 92-05-26-002a, which calls for installation of a spring clip retainer to prevent parking brake failure on the following models:2002-2003 cadillac escalade1999-2003 chevy silverado 15002000-2003 chevy suburban, tahoe 15002002-2003 chevy avalanche1999-2003 gmc sierra 15002000-2003 gmc yukon 1500gm should have done a recall.this problem is widespread and the transmission may not be sufficient to hold when parked on a steep slope. A driver could place a running vehicle in neutral, set the parking brake, and take their foot off the brake pedal, resulting in harmful consequences. This defect could result in serious injury.
Complaint regarding safety recall warning of corrosion defect in 2002 suburban. This could cause front hub/bearing assembly and wheel speed sensor to fail.recall campaign#05v379000.the consumer experienced exactly what the recall described.the consumer requested reimbursement.the consumer found that the rear brakebacking plates would not hold.the rear brake backing plates were completely corroded along with the rear emergency brake and they needed replacement.*sc updated 02/13/06.
The parking brake on my 2002 chevrolet suburban seems to have a design flaw.when the brake is set the vehicle will still roll forward in gear.the service advisor i spoke to at team chevrolet in alpharetta, ga said that he sees the same problem every day.the way he explained it is that the parking brake shoes can rub slightly when the vehicle is underway, and this eventually wears off all the friction material from the shoe and the brake will no longer work.my vehicle has had this problem since it was new, and the dealer said brake parts are not covered under warranty.
Have a 2002 chevy suburban 1500 ls.took vehicle in for inspection, but failed due to emergency or parking brake would not hold in drive.it does hold in reverse.i contacted my dealer and they know all about this problem, they say it can not be adjusted, but must replace brakes, maybe rotors, etc at a cost of ~$800.i searched web, there is not a recall, but lots of complaints. There is also a class action suit out of tx?what should i do?
Parking brake does not work. Parking brake pads were replaced but still does not work.
Defective parking brakes on 2002 chevrolet suburban. *mrthe engineers had not found a way to repair the problem properly.the parkingbrake would refuse to release at the wheels.this was an intermittent problem. *sc
Park brake failure on my 2002 suburban.have never used the brake went to engage it and the truck rolled away.investigation on the web shows that this is a problem on a couple years of suburban's and gm dealers do not recognize it.
Failed texas inspection due to parking brake not holding vehicle on 2002 chevrolet suburban; told by inspector 99% of chevy's fail for this reason; widespread problem; i am scheduled to have fixed this weekend so i can pass inspection.
Purchased new'2002 chevrolet suburban parking brake failed @20k miles adjusted under warranty-advised at service that this vehicle had inherent problem and adjustment would not last. Lasted maybe 8k miles-will not hold vehicle on incline-potentially very dangerous if vehicle unexpectedly came out of park-now no further adjustment can be made-certainly a defect in my opinion-since the initial warranty service adjustment two additional auto technicians have told me subject brake cannot be further adjusted and is a problem with this model vehicle-what can i do-what may you do to resolve this safety related problem?-thank you.
Emergency brake failure on my 2002 chevrolet suburban. The same thing happened on my son-in-law's 2002 chev. Suburban. Neither of us knew this until we took our vehicles in for a state inspection sticker & it failed inspection. Was told there was a service bulletin on this problem but gmc did not take any responsibility. We both, had the repair done at our expense.
Failed inspection. The emergency brake was not engaging.dealership said the back of the rear rotors had rusted out, causing the emergency brake to rust also.had to replace both rotors and both e-brakes.only have 27,000 miles on the car.had just been in for a check-up before coming off warranty.rotors and e-brakes should not need to be replace with low milage.have spoken to four other people that have had the same problem.
Dt*:the contact stated while on an incline, the parking brake did not hold.this parking brake has only been used twice since purchase.the dealership determined the parking brake lining was worn out and the parking brake shoes need to be replaced.the wear occurred because the brake shoes do not fully release after use.
2002 chevrolet suburban, full size, 1500 half ton, 4x4, ltthe emergency/parking brake has failed for the second time.the emergency/parking brakes do not hold even on a slight incline.the first emergency/parking brake failure was noted on 8/29/2003 at 25,930 miles.the repair ticket noted that the parking brake shoes were improperly adjusted, and gm repaired the problem at no charge under warranty.the second emergency/parking brake failure was noted around 11/1/2005 at appx 40,050 miles.the second failure was the exact same problem as the first failure.this time the gm dealer said that the emergency/parking brake shoes were worn out and charged us $273.18 to repair the problem.the repairs for the second failure consisted of total replacement of the emergency/parking brake shoes.we have kept the replaced failed brake shoes.note: in normal usage of this vehicle, the emergency/parking brakes are rarely engaged.the vehicle is normally parked in a level, heated garage, transmission set in park, emergency/parking brake never set/engaged.with the first failure at 25,930 miles and the second failure just appx 15,000 miles later, we suspect that there is possibly some design or component fault and a very pre-mature failure problem.also given the available facts, it looks like the original warranty repair for the first failure was possibly substandard in that the emergency/parking brake shoes were merely re-adjusted, when they should have been replaced.in addition, in the owners manual there is no mention of the emergency/parking brakes ever needing adjustments.
Failure of parking brake discovered by state inspection.parking brake was in total failure and had to be replaced before vehicle could be passed.parking brake was stuck in the open position causing brake rotors to excessively wear.repair/replacement of parking brake was required along with new brake rotors.the parking brake was never engaged from time of purchase at new dealership to time of failure at inspection station.
I own a 2002 chevrolet suburban with a little more than 50,000 miles.i have just had my third set of parking brake shoes installed on my car.the first pair were replaced when the car was under warranty!this car has its own unique parking brake pads and rotor.there must be something wrong with the design of this system, i have never had another car that required the rear brake pads to be replacedthis frequently!if i was every enovlved in an incident where i would have needed the emercency brake(parking), i don't think it would be capable of stopping this vehicle. Y recommondation is that you issue a recall to correct the inherrent defects in the suburbans parking/emergency brake system.
We had to have the parking brake shoes replaced on our 2002 chevrolet suburban even though we never used the parking brake.it had 33,981 miles on it at the time.
Dt: 2002 chevy sububran 1500ls.the parking brake is ineffective and has been since purchased the vehicle.bought this used, but about a week later after purchase. Did take to a dealer from where it was purchased.the dealer thought that the brake was examined, and that the parking brake was okay, and should hold a vehicle on a slope.over the last few months have decided the parking brake was a problem.there was a slope in driveway, tested, and found that it did not work.did not take back to dealer, but owner felt it was a design defect.
Park brake failure on my 2002 suburban.i attempted to have my vehicle inspected and it failed due to the inability of parking brake to hold the vehicle. Investigation on the web shows that this is a wide-spread problem on many suburbans.although all of the dealerships i spoke with constantly see and repair this problem, gm apparently doesn't consider it a safety issue.neither warranty nor recalls will cover this defect.
This cannot be described as a singular event or failure.it occurs every time i park the vehicle. The emergency brake shoes on my 2002 chevrolet suburban wore out prematurely.virginia state police safety inspection requires an operable emergency brake.the emergency brake will not hold the vehicle.i began noticing this problem about a year ago.i did some research on the internet and found that it is a problem shared by other 2002 suburban owners, and some customers have had success with gm replacing under warranty.my local dealer acknowledges that the design is flawed allowing the brake shoe to constantly contact the hat rotor surface and wear prematurely.because it is considered a wear item, however, gm will not replace the shoes and clips. A new clip exists that is supposed to alleviate the problem.i am using july as the incident date as that is when i ordered new brake shoes to correct the problem.i included this complaint on a customer service questionnaire after a recent visit to the dealership, but there was no repsonse by gm.
At 16000 miles the transmission failed.the vehicle was repaired under warranty but the same problem recurred while driving 50/55 mph.the consumer stated that the sun gear and planetary gear failed.the consumerwas able to drive the car home in 1st and 2nd gear.the vehicle was not taken to dealership.
My 2002 suburban had a transmission failure at 46091 miles that required me to purchase a new transmission at a cost of $3200.00. We were almost in an accident because the vehicle stopped shifting while at highway speeds and barely made it safely to the shoulder. There was no warning or engine light and the transmission appeared fine although it was beyond repair. The fluid level was good and it was not burned.chevrolet says there is nothing they can do as the warranty is for 3 years and 36000 miles.
When the consumer apply his gear shiftto park to drive.there is a loud ticking noise coming from underneathandthe vehicle willnot move.when gear shift is place in drive or reverse.
Road side assistance complaint.mrthe consumer stated the vehicle would not start, there was a problem with the transmissionand the box for the 4-wheel drive.
When driving at any speedvehiclelost acceleration, causing the driver to pull off the road. Consumer tookvehicle todealership, andmechanic determinedthattransmission failed.
Transmission does not shift properly in 1st and 2nd gears
Sudden, without warning, transmission failure.no explanation given by dealer other than internal failure with recommendation to replace transmission.only 45,000 miles and well maintained vehicle.
My 2002 chevrolet suburban experienced premature transmission failure. The total cost for the repair is $3000.00. The truck has never towed a thing, the car is only used to drive children to school etc. It has 64,000 miles and just stopped on a turn in the middle of an intersection.
January 1, 2006just after leaving my home, i stopped at a stop sign and when i accelerated from a stop a loud clunk and then a constant whinning sound. I drove the vehicle home the one mile from the stop sign in first gear, the transmission would not shift to second, after returning home the car would not go into reverse either.transmission failed at 104,000 miles. Repair shop says the transmission shell and other components of the transmission was cracked. The transmission shop states that they have had several customers that have experienced the same problem with this transmission.they would consider this to be a common problem with this type of transmission, a bad design according to the repair shop.
At 24,000 miles the transmission on our 2002 suburban failed without warning while driving.it had to be towed to the dealer for a transmission replacement.
Transmission oil leaking onto the exhaust system creating a burning smell and oil all over the transfer case and transmission as well as the exhaust pipe.
After numerous other repairs to this vehicle, it started whining through the first few gear changes.the gm shop said that the torque converter went out and they had to overhaul the transmission.it is still in the shop because after they put everything back together, the whining noise is still there.after 11 days and three tear downs and rebuilds, the mechanic is at a loss as to what is wrong.
Noticed noise and vibration when in four wheel drive.chevy dealer inspected and determined that a plastic plug on front differential had failed and drained all of the oil from differential resulting in failure.chevy has re-designed the faulty part (obviously as a result of many failures).front differential assembly was replaced.car was repeatedly returned for service because of no 4x4 function.eventually, transfer case was removed and inspected only to discover that clutches were completely destroyed from differential failure.transfer case assembly was replaced.suburban had 40,000 miles upon initial failure (4,000 out of warranty).chevy sent owner a check for $600.reccomend that all suburban 4x4 owners immediately replace the plastic plug with new design (approx $23 part) or expect failure.chevy will not accept reponsibility.old parts are available for inspection.
Oil leaks! ist oil leak greenish fluid leaking from under engine skid plate. Had that repaired at billings chevrolet, and it is still leaking. Technician said axle seal was leaking. 2nd leak, engine oil leaking onto exhaust pipe which is giving off burning smell in cabin. Repaired once, and it is still leaking.
We had to have pinion & side bearings replaced and they reconditioned differentials.this is a family vehicle that does not pull horse trailers or a boat!
There is a grinding noise and a vibration coming from the bottom of the vehicle when slowing down.took to dealer and dealer will replace the differentral. Please provide any further information. Ts
This vehicle has been to a dealer for the 2nd time now to rebuild the front differential and it has only 22000 miles on it.
Driving on freeway along carpool lane when the car ahead of us stopped to move to the next lane and we all had to stop. I had a good distance from the vehicle in front of me when i hit the brakes. The brakes went all the way to the floor(literally) but still didn't stop until i crashed into the car in front of me. The abs brakes feels unusual. I also hear a clanking sound on the differential every time i have to decelerate and go back to normal speed or just moving from "park" to "reverse" or from "neutral" to "reverse".*nlm
After having other rear-end work done earlier, we had to have them replace two u-joints.
The consumers along with three mechanics noticed something was wrong with the transmission as it shuttered when the consumer took off at the light.*scc

2002 chevroletsuburban 2500 4wd transfer case failure *grthe consumer noticeable a considerable amount of smoke coming from behind the vehicle. He pulled over and noticed oil dripping from the transmission. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop and upon inspection it was determined the transfer case housing had a hole in it. The consumer did some research and discovered it was a well known issue with the transfer case oil pump retaining method, causing the pump to move around in the housing, eventually wearing a hole in the rear transfer case housing.
Contact states;front passenger seat belt will tighten and lock while engine is on and off. Just to unlock seat belt at latch and allow it to roll all the way in before it can be applied.it tightens as if brakes were slammed on.however it tightens anyway without that particular situation.has taken to dealer twice without any conclusions or repairs.
The front passenger , the second seat passenger and the third seat on the driver side are defective.when riding, the seat belts will lock into a position where you can't immediately get out of the belt.the belts have been serviced onat least 3 times.
Overly sensitive seat belt mechanism. Slightest movement while driving will cause seat belt to lock, restricting the person driving from necessary movement such as, looking behind vehicle before reversing or lane changing, taking the ticket from machine in parking structures, ect. Seat belt has been changed once but continues to be a problem. Problem has been with auto since purchased.
The set belts locked up without the brakes being applied.passenger seat belt shoulder harness only will not unlock, unless the seat belt is unbuckled and retracts back.
Seat belt retractor locks up.
All passenger seat belts get tighter while vehicle is moving- it feels like you are being sucked into the seats- it also makes taking a breath diffulcult- the tighter the seat belts get the harder they are to unlatch- the make do correction offered by chevrolet of using a seatbelt extension is unacceptable as it places the buckle and connections over the center of the abdomen/chest area
The consumer was involved in an accident. The consumer was driving about 60 mph and rear ended another vehicle and the air bags failed to deploy. Also the seat belts did not hold the driver and passenger causing them to go forward into the windshield.provide further details.
3rd row seat belts would continue to tighten down on passenger when used. Dealer and manufacturer were notified. Consumer was informed that the seat belts for the third row are designed for children, consumer was given extenders.
While driving at 45 mphvehicle was forced off of the road into oncoming traffic. Consumer swerved to avoid a head on collision with another vehicle.this action caused the vehicle to crash through a fence, run into a ditch, and collide head on with an oak tree.seat belts were worn, but at the time of the impact, the latch came apart. Vehicle was equipped withfront and side air air bags. Upon impact, theydid not deploy.consumer's knee was broken, and hesuffered a concussion. Police andmedical helpdid arrive on the scene. Manufacturer and the dealer have been notified of the incident.
Passenger's seat belt would continue to tigthen down ontopassenger while driving. Dealer and manufacturer were notified. Feel free to provide any further information.
They had to replace the rear 3rd row seat belt retractor.it was broken when purchased.
3rd row seat belts tighten as driving causing discomfort to children who then have to release the seat belt to re-fasten in order to maintain comfort.this is a safety hazard.*la
The rear left and center safety belt latch plate were designed improperly. The consumer was unable to properly tighten the belt, when he tried to secure a child.
The front seats were not centered correctly, they were positioned to the right of the center. Consumer was concerned if the air bags should deploy, the driver would not be protected.(the other vehicle is a chevrolet tahoe 2002.vin: [xxx]) *jginformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The rivets on the driver seat are loose, the seat moves, and the noise is annoying.the entire track has to be replaced at the owners expense.the problem recurred after repair. *sc the wiper blades were replaced.
The circuit board under the drivers seat shorted out and caught on fire while the car was occupied.
Drivers seat makes noise and moves forward and backwards slightly during acceleration and braking.
The middle seatback will no longer snap into place when put in the upright position.manufacturer stated seat back did not have to click to be safely secured. Owners manual states for the consumer to be sure the click is heard. Consumer wants to know if the seat is safe.
When braking at less then 10mph the antilocking braking system kicks in and causes the car to go much further to stop.this has almost caused an injury by my going over a curb.no antilocking should occur less then 10mph - this is very unsafe due to the fact that braking at under 10mph frequently involves barriers in front of the car where every inch of stopping distance is extremely important.abs braking is for when tires break static friction on the road, and, i assure you that no friction is being broken - this is a serious flaw!
The brake failed as i was stopping at an intersection.the brake peddle started to hold and then just pressed to the floor.the brake line has failed.this is the third brake line failure on this vehicle in the last 14 months.we've had the both rear and both front lines replaced already, this last failure appears to be between master and abs.
Brake lines rusted and brakes failed twice while driving vehicle. There were no accidents. First incident was the rear brake line burst. I replaced the rusted brake line. Front brake line burst 6 months after rear brake line was replaced. All front brake lines were so rusted, i removed and replaced all of them as a precaution. The brake lines rusted in areas where they were clamped, so that salt and dirt could not be cleaned out. Brake lines were unpainted bare steel.
Rear brake line failure due to excessive corrosion. I had to stop short as the car infront of me stopped unexpectedly. My car stopped, but in the last few feet the peddle went to the floor. I pulled the car to the side of the road looked under the car. In the rear of the car i could see fluid in a puddle under the rear end housing. The fluid continued to stream out of the brakelines. After towing the car home i looked at the brake lines. When i touched them they crumbled in my hands.
Backing to hook up to trailer, brakes failed no prior warning (light). All brake lines need replaced as well as fuel lines beginning to leak and will soon need replaced.
I was on the freeway there was traffic i went to slow down my brakes locked up on me my car fish tailed i released the brakes and they were stillstill locked. Caused me to slid at least 30 feet i was only going 35. Which caused me slam into the center divider
Brakes failed while driving 60mph on highway i-476 (philadelphia pa) with the family in the vehicle.upon braking to stop for traffic, the brake pedal went directly to the floor and pumping the pedal several times did not result in any braking of the vehicle.after managing to get the vehicle to a stop on the side of the road, and then pumping the brake pedal several more times, brake fluid could be seen coming from underneath the vehicle at both the area around the rear axle and the area under the drivers side seat.later, inspection of the brake lines found them all to be severely rusted.after reading that this is an existing problem with gm vehicles, it is greatly disappointing, to say the least, that no notification or recall was given.such a severe andscary safety problem should require at least notification of customers and better quality design/control of braking components.
While depressing brakes at a complete stop, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor.i proceeded at a slow rate of speed and tested the brake system.the brake pedal has to be pushed all the way down to the floor just to get the vehicle to come to a slow/crawling stop.after inspecting underneath the vehicle, i discovered the left rear brake line leaking.vehicle was taken to a local repair shop.
Brake line has corroded and rubbed a hole in the brake line and leaded fluided. Has been replaced and is rubbing in same place on frame again.
My antilock brakes are going off at slow speeds, almost causing accident, going about 4-5 mph, need to know if my vin is covered in recall
When driving my 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500 at speeds under 10 mph in bumper-to-bumper traffic, the abs independently activated. This happened in dry weather on a freeway. When the abs independently activated, the car vibrated and accelerated with difficulty and jerked. The brakes locked up, causing a tire to blow out. The car caught fire where the brakes had locked up the front right wheel. The fire commander who examined the car after putting out the fire and the mechanic who is repairing the car both explained that improper abs activation led to a rupture in the brake line, exposing the leaking brake fluid to the heat generated by the locked brakes. This vehicle is experiencing the same problems as indicated in nhtsa recall 05v379000 concerning the abs system but is not included in the recall due to the vin. The car had been taken to a gm dealer two months earlier (in july) with a complaint about the same problems with the abs system. The gm dealer did not mention the recall but made extensive (and expensive) repairs to the car.the car experienced the same problem again in september, when it led to the fire. This was not enough time or the right season for the abs to deteriorate from salt exposure since the july repairs.my car is probably excluded from the recall because it is registered in virginia. It should have been included because the car is registered in fairfax county, virginia, less than 15 miles from washington, d.c. And maryland. Fairfax county is further north than many parts of maryland and west virginia. The region has the same weather conditions, length of winter season, and exposure to salt as washington, d.c., west virginia, and maryland, which are included in the recall. Residents of the area frequently drive in these states, particularly in washington, d.c. And maryland, where many virginia residents work, shop, and seek entertainment.
Severe metal brake line corrosion:on surface streets, while approaching an intersection at about 35 mph, the brakes were applied and the pedal immediately went to the floor while towing a dual-axle travel trailer.the driver was able to use the trailer brake override to stop the truck-trailer combination before hitting anything.brake fluid was dripping under the driver's side door.closer examination revealed severe corrosion of the four 1/4" brake lines that follow the frame rail from the abs module on the inside of the left frame rail up into the engine compartment to the master cylinder and the two front wheels.one of the two lines from the master cylinder to the abs module had burst.the rust on these 1/4" lines was flaking off in large chunks.also observed very significant rust on the 3/16" hard lines on the rear axle and the hard lines mounted to the frame and body leading to the rear axle.these lines are very close to failure.what is further distressing about this situation is that when one brake circuit failed there was none to very little braking effectiveness from the other brake circuit.the brake pedal went right to the floor with little resistance.this suggests that the master cylinder does not provide independent braking circuits like it should.later, using a pair of locking-type pliers, the failed line was clamped off and it would build pressure and restore a modicum of braking effectiveness from the other circuit.the general condition of the truck is good with only a small amount of surface rust on some of the underbody components.this truck is not a rust-bucket.salt exposure is minimal as a maryland truck (one owner) that is used primarily for towing a camper trailer in fairer weather and is not used as a daily commuter.failure:7oct2012.truck:2002 1/2-t chev suburban ls, 4wd with approximately 190,000 miles.
The metal brake lines apparently have rusted to the point of total failure. One metal line blew out as we drove down an incline i had to use the parking brake to stop. Then to a repair shopas we were out of town. The shop replaced the line that blew out and pointed out that all of the other metal lines were about to have the same rust fatigue failure. This vehicle has been registered in virginia all of its history. On line i have been able to purchace stainless steel brake metal lines pre bent. It would seem to any one that if you can not stop a vehicle due to a common systom failure that could an accident or death it must be a safety recall.
Parking brake does not work. Parking brake pads were replaced but still does not work.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban. While driving approximately 5 mph, the brake pedal pulsated without warning. The contact depressed the brake pedal to the floor to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall. The failure did not recur. The failure mileage was approximately 220,000.
While parking my 02 suburban, i completely lost my brakes!! the brake pedal went down to the floor; brake fluid all over the driveway. What happened? the brake line underneath the truck just below the driver seat had rotted through. After doing some research, i found out that this is a common problem with chevy trucks. However, gm has failed to initiate a recall. Hopefully gm will decide to recall these trucks and fix the obvious engineering glitch before some unfortunate person or family ends up seriously injured or killed in an unnecessary accident.
While driving down to the jersey shore on the garden state parkwaywith my family to go on vacationi went to get off the exit and when i tried to stop my brake pedal went to the floor......when i looked under the truck i realized that the steel brake line abovethe spare tire was completely rusted through. Thankgod there was no one in front of us. Or we would have crashed into them and been hurt or even killed. Ps i bought this truck brand new...it was a very scary experience.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to properly respond to deceleration attempts. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the anti-lock braking system was faulty. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 130,000.
Anti lock brakes are activating on there own when trying to stop and has almost caused me to crash 4 times. I finally pulled the abs fuse out this stopped it but now i have no abs iam in soap lake washington it shows a recall but only for a few states i bought mysuburban new in boise idaho and now reside in washington statemy vehacle is effected extremely bad with this problem
Traveling on a 4-lane highway, 35 mph, approaching red light in line of heavy traffic.i applied the brakes and felt the pedal go to the floor.i stepped on the emergency brake and was able to stop the truck before hitting the vehicle ahead of me.second incident:2014.traveling down hill toward stop sign.same sequence of events as above.i can't believe that chev. Suburbans sold in new england have steel brake lines!this is my 8th suburban.first experience with rusting everywhere under chassis, esp. Brake lines.
Brake line rotted out resulting in near collision. Second failure in aug. Of 2015 both events were a near collision . This vehicle has been kept in near perfect condition as a hauler for my trailer, now fear to use as all lines look bad, should have been made of a non corossive material. Vehicle spent most of it's life in vermont
While waiting stationary at drive-thru hard brake line ruptured resulting in greatly reduced braking effectiveness and large loss of fluid. Brake lines were severely corroded.
I was approaching a 4-way stop sign in philadelphia when i noticed the brake pedal sinking to the floor. I had been using this vehicle daily and had recently used it for a trip to the store.there was no warning light or problem with braking or pedal feel before this occurred.i pumped the brake pedal to try to come to a stop.i did not come to a complete stop until i was into the intersection by using the parking brake and putting the transmission in neutral.i was able to get the car to safety where i noticed brake fluid pouring out from an extremely rusted brake line behind the left rear tire when the brake pedal was pushed.fortunately, there was no cross traffic or pedestrians or children crossing the street at the time.this happened in a school zone where children are always present.
Went to press on the brake pedal to put the vehicle into drive and the brake pedal went to the floor. I put the vehicle in park got out and brake fluid was coming out from under the car near the front of the drivers door.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the driver depressed the brakes and the pedal traveled completely down to the floor. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the brake lines were fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 115,000.
Started vehicle put in reverse to back up and when applied brakes they pedal was soft and then went to floor and vehicle hit a tree. Brake lines are rusted severely.
My son was traveling @ 50 mph when brakes failed. He narrowly missed hitting a car at an intersection.found out from mechanic that brake line had failed and was entirely corroded. Had no warning.repair cost $1,200. Evidently, this happens so often that there is an aftermarket kit to replace all lines.has their been a recall?..
Driving my 2002 1500 suburban the brake line let loose, got the truck to the shop on the lift found all brake lines corroded and two leaking fluid. Upon inspection found all fuel lines rotted out as well. Replaced all lines in the truck brake and fuel including front rubber lines and calipers. Truck has never had a great brake pedal still does not. Also found rocker panels rotting out along with quarters truck is beautiful in and out except the cheap metal gm used.
Rear brake line failed resulting in loss of braking ability.
I have been dealing with this problem with the abs system for over 2 years and have replaced all the sensors brakes and hubs on my suburban, i have been reading all the customer complaints and chevy is well aware of this issue.my abs system runs when it wants prevents my car from properly stopping and when i reported the issue they told me to pull the fuse so the pump would shut off, so i am driving around with no abs system and we just had the sensors replaced again as well as the hub and the same thing is happening with the pulsating of the break peddle and the running pump i would think chevy would do a recall with all the complaints..
While driving 25 mph and coming to a light changing to yellowduring a heavy snowfall i had attempted to stop . The abs pulsated a few timesbecause of the snow and the brake pedal went to the floorand the suburban did not stop andi could only hold on hope and pray myself and my 2 and 3 year olds get through the snowy and slippery intersection withouthitting anyone or getting hit by someone else, luckily the snow on the ground actually helped slow the vehicle, the master cylinder showed minimal fluid loss,i was told by the dealer cold weather and age caused the failure and an estimate of about 1500 to repair . This happened within 7 months of a dealer multi-point inspection which showed no leaks and full brake inspection by the dealer which included the brake lines and a requestedsystem bleedto try to get the brakes to work properly.the truck also has a long soft pedal travel which goes below the gas pedal height of which the dealer has informed me is normal and like all older 2002 suburbans. And the final bill for the brakelines was 1730.26 after adding an oil change while it was there for service... Got it home and fluid was leaking profusely on the driveway (where i had no leaks up until this point) the dealer denied overfilling the oilwould cause the leak and suggested that the cold weather caused the front seal leak so i had agreed toreplace the front seal which was another 374.44 and the notes now show multiple oil leaks.and a repeat brake inspection shows no failures , but the brakes continue to not work properly and the dealer said ifit continues they can manual bleed the brake system to see if that helps the issue.
Coming up to a stop light i noticed i needed to push brake peddle farther down to stop. The same for each stop after that. I knew that another brake line had failed. I had two replace under hood about a year ago. This one is over frame midway back.
Brakes failed today.steel tubing was found to be perforated along the forward left portion.the remainder of the tubing is substantially corroded and appears subject to failure as well.i see that this failure is the subject of nhtsa action number ea11001 .
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that the abs warning indicator illuminated. It was diagnosed that the hub sensor assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000. The vin was not available. Updated 01/31/2017*ct
The parking brake on this vehicle has never worked properly since new and now i get a rejection sticker in the state where i live due to this and then have to spend money to repair it and it still does not work. It will not hold even on the slightest incline. Very dangerous.
When braking at less then 10mph the antilocking braking system kicks in and causes the care to go much further to stop.this has almost caused an injury by going over a curb.no antilocking should occur less then 10mph - this is very unsafe due to the fact that braking at under 10mph frequently involves barriers in front of the car where every inch of stopping distance is extremely important.abs is for when tires break static friction on the road, and, i assure you that no friction is being broken - this is a serious flaw!
The rear brake line failed for the second time and caused me to have accident.the issue is that the front brakes did not stop the vehicle and the brake pedal went to the floor. When this happened the first time 2009 the dealer changed the master cylinder and other brake components stating that is why the front brakes didn't work however this failure was exactly the same as the first incident absolutely no brakes.
Vehicle was involved in crash after brakes failed, without warning indicator. Brake line was corroded through in engine compartment near bracket on frame.
Parking brake will not hold the car in place and was like that when i bought it new. Unable to repair it to make it hold the car. Problems getting car inspected.
Anti lock brakes activate at low speeds, leading to a loss of control and longer stoping distances
1) several time when pressing on the brakes going at a slow rate of speed had the anitlock brakes start activating (pulsating) was able to stop with no incident but had to press my foot as hard as possible to stop.2) took the 2002 chevy suburban into a chevrolet dealer and had the brakes repaired.found out the sensors were clogged with dust from brakes.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban.while approaching a stop at 5 mph, the abs engaged when the brake pedal was depressed, which prevented the vehicle from coming to a stop.the vehicle continued to drive over the curb and the contact had to place the vehicle into park in order to stop the vehicle.the vehicle stopped close to an embankment with a 15 to 20 foot drop.the contact took the vehicle to the dealer to inspect the failure and was informed that the vehicle was previously repaired according to nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000, action number pe05020 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock).the contact stated that even though the repair may have been performed, the failure still persists.the dealer is charging $500 to redo the repair.the failure mileage was 62,058.
My 2002 chevrolet suburban z71 (1500) is experiencing anti-lock brake problems. Whenever the car is about to stop, the antilock brakes activate and prevent stoppingin a normal distance for slow speeds.this has nearly caused several low speed accidents.i see there was a recall campaign, #05v379000 and i called gm to check if my vehicle was included but they said no, even though my vehicle is in the indicated year range and is exhibiting the exact symptoms described in the recall. This vehicle should be included in the recall too.
Brakes failed prematurely due to rusting brakes lines from master cylinder without warning on i-94.
Just had to replace brake lines due to severe corrosion. This cost me a small fortune.this is covered under nhtsa action # ea11001.performed service to avoid catastrophic event.notice must be made to all current owners of vehicles to reduce risk of catastrophiccrash \ possible loss of life.
Brake failure, abs kicks in under 5 mph.lost brakes once.upon reviewing this topic on the below weblink, found out i and a multitude of other chevy truck owners have identical issues.based on reading the below link, i'm fearful of letting my wife/kids in this vehicle that a possible car accident may happen if the brakes don't work when needed.please investigate this, i and many others paid a substantial amount of money for products that are defective/life threatening and chevy refuses to correct the problem.once again, please read the below link, i am not alone.http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/gm_silverado_brakes.html[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Began emergency breaking and evasive maneuvers.shortly after beginning to turn, the abs light came on and all 4 wheels locked.the result was a 180 degree spin across 5 lanes of i30 just south of downtown dallas.we almost avoided any collision, but it could have been horrible as we were close to hitting at least 7 to 10 vehicles with speed differentials of about 50mph while out of control.the failure code was the ebcm relay, and the system works if the ambient temperature is cold enough, though it fails on bumps sometime.typical bad solder joint behavior.many people are repairing these modules by re-soldering the relay connections.
Seat belt retractor locks up.

I have a 2002 chevy suburban - i had the abs system replaced in 2005 to have it break down again in 2008.the dealer's service department says that there is no recall on it because they haven't heard sufficient consumer complaints to warrant a recall!further, i called chevrolet's/gmc's service department and they said that they don't read internet complaint boards.all complaints have to be directed straight to chevy's customer service department in order to be input into a "complaint database", then they determine if they have received enough complaints to merit a recall - per industry standards.
Dt: problem with abs. In the past month while braking at low speeds the brakes did not activate but the abs activated.the consumer has had many near accidents due to this failure.
The anti-lock brake system activated incorrectly at low speed on a steep hill such that the vehicle rolled into the cross street without stopping.vehicle was in vermont for 4 years prior to the incident.
Pulsating at braking, longer than neccesary to come to complete stop at low speed , extreme rust to undercarriage, suspension, and brake parts.
Brakes failed completely.... Brake pedal went all the way to the floor after pulling into a parking lot and trying to slow down to pull into a spot. Attempted to pump brakes but the pedal did not come back up. Hit curb at approximately 10 mph. Truck needed to towed and mechanic found trouble to be a badly rusted through main front to rear brake lines. Mechanic found all lines to be rusted and replaced all lines with poly coated steel lines. Mechanic stated that the factory brake lines were not coated...? is this not a factory recall issue?
My wife was driving our 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500 4wd when she applied the brakes to stop the peddle went all the way to the floor. She was able to get the truck into a parking lot without incident. When i got there to look at the problem, i noticed the steel brake line supplying the right front caliper was severely corroded, where it runs atop the frame in the engine compartment, to the point where it developed a pinhole to allow a loss of pressure(peddle). The line is so corroded that i can't even cut out a section and flare the old line to install a repair section of line. I believe the entire brake line has to be replaced. At this time i haven't inspected the rest of the lines, but when i can i will!!!!!i'm reading about numerous brake line and other severe corrosion issues on these models. We have been loyal gm customers since 1976. We currently own the above mentioned suburban and a 2008 silverado. The suburban is our primary family vehicle which is used to transport our disabled child.
Hard brake lines failed, resulting in loss of hydraulic pressure for service brakes.
I was nearing a stop sign at an intersection and applied brakes.pedal went to floor and i went through intersection.oncoming vehicle had to swerve to miss me.investigation determined that a front brake line had rusted through, causing loss of brake fluid.
2002 chevy suburban: grinding noise heard on undercarriage and abs light came on. Determined the abs pump was making the grinding sound and further determined an unavailable part costs about $1200 plus labor. There is a waiting list for this part a mile long. Apparently this is a common problem worthy of recall investigation. Dealers temporary solution is to unplug the abs fuse and drive it until the part comes available. We were told to be careful in the rain as it is unsafe without abs brakes. Part might be available in 2 to 4 months.
The abs light came on. When the car was turned off, a pump or something kept running and the sound seemed to be coming form under the vehicle.the sound did not cease even when the car was turned off and the key removed.this continued until i checked the fuses and tried disconnecting the abs 60-amp fuse from the fuse box under the hood.the fuse was fine, however when i disconnected the fuse, the sound immediately stopped.i reconnected the fuse briefly and the sound resumed, so i left the fuse disconnected until a repair can be maid.
At low speeds when pressing the brakes the abs brakes on my 2002 chevy suburban pump and allow the veichle to move forward. Have had two occassions were this almost caused an accident. Dealer parkway motors calumet michigan determined it was corrosion on the abs sensors. They told me they first reported the problem to gm engineering 3 years ago and currently the see almost one of these problems a day.
2002 chevy suburban with a recall for corrosion. Consumer states that the dealer stated that the vehicle was cleared. He was informed the recall was for vehicles in the northern and northeastern states.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban. Whenever the contact attempted to engage the brake pedal at a low speed he noticed that the abs suddenly activated which also increased the stopping distance. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current mileage was 130,000. The failure mileage was 115,000.
The brakes on my 2002 suburban began kicking back during stops on dry clean pavement near the end of the stop.this caused us to drift past stop signs on a number of occasions and caused near collisions in slow moving parking lot driving.i took the vehicle to a local dealer, hawkins chevrolet oldsmobile, inc. And was told the abs speed sensor was corroded and not working properly.they replaced the abs speed sensors on the two front wheels on 8/25/05 under invoice ctcs85504.i inquired about whether this would be replaced for free given the obvious safety implications and was told to file a claim with gm customer service.the service rep said that this was normal wear and tear and denied the claim, but registered a complaint under file# 1-355599627 on 8/12/05.i conducted further research on the internet and found a news article about the gm recall for this same defect in canada.
Dt: the contact states there is nhtsa recall05v379000 concerning the abs system. This vehicle is experiencing the same problemsas indicated in the recall, but is not included in the recall due to the vin.
Abs activates at low speed braking... More difficult to stop and scary because unexpected...definitely a safety issue..the car started having problems fall 2004, brought the car to the dealership for repair.. Problem seem to be fixed.. But recently started having the problem again.
Dt: while driving under 10 mph the brakes will not hold.no indicator lightscame on.took vehicle to mechanic who explained that this was an abs problem.this problem occurred everytime the consumer drove the vehicle.
Dt:2002 chevorlet suburban, when consumer goes to push on the brakes theypush back.the brakes have no stopping power, the abs pulseate, theymakes a low growling noise when pushed.
Anti lock brakes unexpectedly activate at low speed causing increase in stopping distance on dry pavement.dealer replaced left wheel hub and anti-lock sensor at a cost to me of $500.vehicle is a 2002 with 40,000 miles.
While applying brakes from 20 mph the brake pedal went to the floor and the vehicle would continued to move. Consumer had to allow the vehicle to roll on to the curb to get the vehicle to stop. Vehicle was towed to the dealer. The cause of the problem had not been determined at this time.
Antilock braking system needing to be repaired with only 49000 miles on vehicle.
Brake pedal failed to release cruise. Brakes failed altogether causing brakes to go to the floor, subsequently vehicle had to be driven off road toward traffic bringing about loss of control of vehicle causing crash into another vehicle on highway and hitting a telephone pole.vehicle was totaled.
Abs brake malfunction in 2002 suburban.gm says have to wait until dec. To repair.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban.while driving between 5-10 mph, the vehicle responded slowly when the brake pedal was depressed.the contact experienced difficulty slowing down the vehicle.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, but was not repaired.the technician stated that the vehicle was previously repaired according to nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock).also, there was a recommendation to disconnect the fuse that deactivated the anti-lock system.the recall remedy has not corrected the issue addressed in the safety defect.the failure and current mileages were 98,000. Updated 3/5/09 the consumer rear ended another vehicle at 5 mph when he attempted to stop. Updated 03/10/09.
1)light brake pedal application causes pedal push back and minimal braking2)almost no stopping ability3)hub w/speed sensor part # 15134584
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban. While the contact was driving approximately between 5-10 mph on normal dry road conditions, the brakes were engaged, followed by an unintended activation of the anti-lock brake system and the vehicle began to roll. The contact was able to stop the vehicle. The manufacturerwas notified and they informed the contact that there was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: anti-lock). However, the vin was not included in the recall and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 100,000. Updated 2/23/11 the mechanic found both wheel speed sensors had internal failure. Updated 05/06/11
While turning into a driveway at approximately 7 m.p.h. Brakes failed and car made loud noise.the suburban finally stopped on the 3rd time of hitting the brakes.
While driving 10-15 mph in stop and go traffic consumer attempted to apply the brakes.when the brake pedal was depressed it went straight to the floor, the brake system failed, and consumer's vehicle rear ended the vehicle in front. No one sustained injuries. Police did arrive at the scene, andconsumer received a citation.
Brakes fade and become spongy with pedal almost going to the floor.vehicle has been to the dealers numorus times with only a temperory fix.
2002 chevrolet suburban. Antilock braking system coming on often with low speed braking. Dealership confirmed same but said not to worry about it. Now problem is worse and car is out of warranty.
Brake failure on 2002 chevy suburban. Resulting in a crash.
My wife complained that the brake system was not functioning properly on our 2002 suburban. Random failures occurred with the abs system at low speed while coming to a stop. Pedal did not respond, pulsed andvibrated. Malfunction of abs brake system was identified as corrosion issue surrounding abs speed sensor mounting surface. Speed sensors were removed and areas cleaned of all corrosion and rust. Electrical readings improved performance of one side (320mvac plus) but did not improve second sensor (less than 200mvac). Further evaluation of the sensor revealed significant warpage to the sensor base attributed to corrosion. Required air gap could not be obtained due to the warped base. Replaced both sensors. Electrical reading on new sensors were greatly improved and no further malfunctions have occurred.
Dt*: the contact stated there was a low metal to metal grinding noise heard while depressing the brake pedal.as the day went on, the sound became progressively louder and louder.the contact took the vehicle to a goodyear tire center where it was determined the rear brakes; both rear rotors and the right rear emergency brake shoe were completely worn out. All four brake shoes and rotors were replaced.the contact never used the emergency brake. The dealership has been alerted.
I was pulling into a parking space and may antilock brakes engaged and the vehicle would not stop. I was stopped by a brick wall. Both my child and i were in the car at the time of the accident. We both suffer from sore necks and backs. I did contact gm's product liability group at the time and was told no problem existed. I continued to drive the car and the anti-lock brake problem became so bad that i have discontinued using the car.
Dt*: the contact stated the abs system activated while traveling 10 mph.the contact received a recall letter #05v379000 regarding the abs wheel speed sensor.the dealer determined the vehicle's problem was with the wheel hub, which was not covered by the recall.updated 12/01/06.
When i apply my brakes, the antilock is heard & the brakes are not firm. This has been going on for about 2 months. It scares me because when i slowly come up to a corner, i don't know if i'm going to stop or not! if i take it to a mechanic, they will put new brakes on, which i don't need, but it isn't going to solve the problem.
Dt*:the contact stated the abs activated at low speeds, which caused excessive stopping distances.there was a nhtsa recall, # 05v379000, regarding the antilock brakes.the vehicle was not included in the recall due to the vin.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated she experiences unwanted anti lock brake system (abs) activation.this can cause increased stopping distances during low-speed brake applications, which could result in a crash. She contacted the dealer in reference to recall # 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: anti lock). Upon contact the technician stated that because the vin number was excluded from the vin range, she was ineligible for a free remedy. No repairs were made. The manufacturer was notified, but no assistance was provided. The failure and current mileages were 108,000.
Dt*: the contact stated the abs light illuminated on the dash.the abs brakes activated at low speeds of 35-40 mph.the dealership determined the electronic brake control module and a module brake pressure valve needed to be replaced.there is an nhtsa recall, # 05v379000 regarding the service brakes, hydraulic: antilock. Upon stepping on the brake at low speed anti-lock brakes kicked in, but did not stop.needed to step on brake several times for the vehicle to stop.
Dt: the consumer stated that the antilock brakes pulsated while the pedal was pressed and as a result the vehicle wouldn't stop.the service dealer stated that this is a known problem.
When car was 2 months old, we complained to the dealer that the anti-lock brakes didn't seem to work properly in that they locked up and made the car jolt to a stop.dealer said over phone that this was fine and did not need to look at car.on june 25, 2002, same problem was experienced on i-95 when trying to avoid another car that cut into lane.brakes did not respond, i lost control of suburban, which rolled over and was totaled.
At a slow speed stop, the abs kicks in, increasing stopping distance.i have come close to an accident twice.
-the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban. While driving at 55 mph the contact heard a grinding noise coming from the front passenger wheel. The vehicle was taken to the mechanic. (1) unknown events leading up to failure.(2)abs brakes come on inappropriately at low speed making truck stop poorly.(3) dealer will start to correct by cleaning abs speed sensors (?). Will charge for this as there is no recall on this vehicle.
2002 suburban wheel speed sensor fault.

A bolt securing the rear left brake caliper bracket assembly failed catastrophicallyjammming the brake and the rear wheel while in motion.fortunately this occurred at low speed and was controllable, but if it had occurred at speed on the highway, there would have been a major accident sincethe rear wheel could have suddenly seized with resultant loss of control of the vehicle (2002 4wd suburban z71).

Heard grinding noise when braking at 58k. Had it checked out and right rear pads worn through. Need new rotor. Left rear pads not as worn but very close to same scenario. Front pads were 50% good.

The steering pump has plenty of fluid in the reservoir and has been changed regularly. All of the sudden all power assisted steering disappeared when turning to the left making parking nearly impossible causing a great safety concern as this is my only vehicle and now my wife cannot take the truck anywhere.according to other owners, it's a common issue caused by the booster valve sticking shut and when i inquired about repair, i was quoted a part cost of 300 bucks which i don't have at all. Hopefully enough folks report this issue resulting in action taken by nhtsa even though the vehicle is almost 20 years old.
Popping noise and clinking felt in steering and excessive play.it is harder to turn to the right-literally you feel the wheel going around much further than if turning to the left, although it does not need an alignment. I took the vehicle to the dealer where they replaced the bushings and fixed lower clearance arms (which had excessive clearance). Picked it up and felt the same clinking and heard the noise again!! i returned it and the service manager took a test drive-he only had to turn out of the parking lot and he knew something was wrong. They replaced the steering shaft. After driving for a few days, i once again felt the same sensation and noise-not as bad as before but still there. Steering has a lot of play in it-i can rock it back and forth and it doesn't move the vehicle. If you go over any bump in the road you feel the clinking in the steering. It has once again been taken to the dealer for repairs. I also have problems stopping at around 20-30 miles per hour, especially over bumps-it does not feel like it will stop-brake pedal seems to go to the floor-i have to release it and press again-i have had several close calls. I reported this and the service dept. Told me this is how abs works-i don't think so. There are too many complaints on this site of the same problem. This vehicle has 10,000 miles on it.

I have a 2002 chevrolet suburban, 1500 lt, 4wd.the suburban was serviced routinely at the dealer and had 69,000 miles.the shaft in the power steering pump broke causing complete and total loss of steering control.fortunately this happened off of the main roadway and at low speed, but caused a complete loss of steering ability.if this had happened on the highway at high speed, the events could have been fatal.
The truck had an ongoing problem with a clanging noise in the steering column, mostly when the steering wheel was turned. Consumer was afraid that it may cause a steering component to break, resulting in loss ofsteering, and could cause an accident. A service representative was contacted by phone and informed of the noise, to which hereplied that there wasn't any recalls, and the noise was not dangerous/serious. The dealers tech indicated that the intermediate shaft was the cause of the problem.

While driving on interstate 95 a thump was heard and the car began to fill with exhaust fumes. On examination it was found that the passenger side hinge to the rear window glass broke. Since the glass extends up past the hinge the only fix was to epoxy it. The mechanic pointed out that when the window is being closed it can be seen that the hold open strut is putting immense pressure on the hinge. Even if the window is never opened, the heating of the gas in the hold open rod puts pressure on the hinge so i had the rod on the passenger side removed. Googling this problem showed many, many people with the same problem at different mileages and times. The two worst case scenarios from this malfunction of the hinge are that the window will simply fall off at 70 mph into following traffic or, like my case. The car will fill with exhaust fumes incapacitating the driver and the occupants while speeding down the highway.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban. The contact stated that while driving 10 mph, there was a very loud noise coming from the rear. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the sway bar link was fractured and needed to be welded back together. The failure and the current mileage was 49,000.

The steering wheel vibrates and i can hear a rattle from the front end. This happened soon after purchasing the vehicle and i was told that something had to be greased. The problem went away for quite a while until recently when it reappeared, of course as soon as the warranty expired. My father in law bought a new 2002 suburban after we bought ours and has had the same problem with his. *la
Uncomfortable vibration occurs after driving vehicle for 15 minutes. At 70-75 and is hard to make go away without having to stop. Feels like suspension defect.
The passenger side "sway bar", "stabilizer bar", or "torsion bar" (unsure of true name)came undone while my wife, four kids, and my mother were driving in the vehicle.i know several mechanics and none had ever heard of this happening to such a new vehicle.the dealership fixed the vehicle with no problem.they had never heard of this sort of thing happening either.i bought the vehicle used from the same dealership and they stated the previous owner "must have lowered the front end."i have parked next to other suburbans and mine was equal in heigth to the other vehicles.i feel this is just an excuse to why there was such a failure in the suspension of the vehicle.luckily my wife was only travelling at approximately five miles an hour when the thing fell apart.i can't even imagine what might have happened at highway speed.prior to purchasing the vehicle i spoke to the previous owner.the vehicle was used by his wife and was traded because she wanted something newer.i asked if anything had been done to the vehicle he replied "i didn't even own it for a full year" and that nothing was done to the vehicle.i felt the need to report this because i feel i may have come very close to loosing my family, and if i report it it could be researched to insure that this type of thing doesn't happen to anyone else.

Consumer statesthat the drivers side rear tire blew out.
Blowout when sidewall separated from tire body; tire rim and front end damaged.
While driving on highway, experienced severe vibration x 3 times. Tires have been computer balanced last thursday and i took suburban in for a check today after severe front end vibration while driving on highway at 70mph. I could not reproduce the vibration with the service forman in the car. The front end vibration has stopped now without any further adjustment from service department. I thought you would want to know about this situation since it is a firestone tire that had previously been recalled last year. My tires do not have the recalled serial numbers on it. I am very pleased with terry cullen cheverolet service. But concerned about the vibration if it returns again. Could this be a normal process for these tires?

When you push on the horn nothing happens, but the panic button on the remote makes the horn go off. It's not the horn under the hood, that is faulty, it is the switch inside the steering wheel burned up. I have asked multiple mechanics to fix this and they said it would take a whole day and the steering wheel and airbag would have to be removed. They said that they see this switch burn up all the time in gm steering wheels. It will cost a lot in labor and also parts.
