The airbag didn't deployed am veer disappointed my son was injured.

The owners wants the front passenger sideair bag to be disconnected because of theirphysicallyhandicapped daughter.

While driving 30 mphvehicle was involved in a front end collision.upon impact, front air bags did not deploy, and there was no indication that there was a problem with the air bags.

When traveling 20 mph upon avoiding hitting a patch of ice consumer therefore depressed the brake pedal when the driver side air bag deployed forcing the occupant arms and handsto be forcedoff the steering wheel causing loss ofvehicle control resulting in an accident. Consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer states due to dislocation of the air bag sensors.

Was traveling approximately 35mph when the vehicle rearended a conversion van. Upon impact with the van, the air bags did not deploy. Seat belts were in use. The conversion van was stationary. Will be taking vehicle to dealer.

While driving at 25-30 mph consumer's vehicle was involved in a frontal collision with another vehicle.upon impact, neither frontal air bag deployed. Driver sustained head injuries, and was transported to local hospital.manufacturer was contacted.

Consumer's wife was in a front end collision and air bags did not deploy. Was told by manufacturer that the injuries that consumer's wife sustained were not enough to warrant an investigation.

Had to apply brakes after going 50-55mph on ice. Vehicle hit guardrail head on & spun around & rear hit guardrail. Upon impact, neither air bags deployed. Driver's seat belt did not restrain. Vehicle's front pushed back into tires. Vehicle towed.

Vehicle experiences continued electrical failures, several repair attempts however not rectified. Mjs

My clicker is not working to unlock or lock it, the lights will not go off and it makes the ringing sound as if the driver door is open even when it's not. I took the battery out to see if it was that but its fully charged.

I saw on television that the ntsa was looking into a problem with leaky batteries on the chevrolet suburbans. My battery did leak causing a power failure. It also leaked down the inside of the engine compartment eating away wires and taking all the paint off the inner fender well and parts of the frame. I tried to complain when it happened and the dealer just ignored me telling me it is the battery manufacurers problem and i would have to find them and complain. This can be a very dangerous problem, please let me know what you find out about this issue. Thank you.

My 1997 chevrolet suburban c-2500 is leaking oil from underneath the engine and making engine very "hot". This happens when i'm driving this vehicle.i touch the engine hood and feel that it's very, very hot. I just went home to prevent any fire or accident. My mechanic said it's not ordinary for this heavy duty truck to leak oil with only 77,000 miles. I need you to investigate my problem and contact gm. You can email me at [xxx] for an updates regarding this problems. Looking forward to hear from you soon. The car was parked in the driveway. In the middle of the night it burst into flames. Our dogs wokeus up. The fire started in the front passenger compartment. By the time the fire department arrived 7 minutes later there was nothing left to the interior of the car. The engine and underside of the car were undamaged by the fire. A tree near the car also caught fire. Chevrolet said there were no recalls on our car. They do not seem interested in examining the car since we settled with our insurance company. Neither the fire department nor the police suspect arson. It would appear to be electrical. If the car had been parked in our garage we would have lost our house.

I have a 1997 chevrolet suburban and it blew the coupling on the heater hose while driving this past saturday.the vehicle had to be towed and the repair was 93.00.i have spoken to several people with the same motor that all had the same problem.the chevrolet dealer said that there probably should be a recall since this happens so frequently.the local shop that made the repair has so many to come in with this problem that they now stock the part.

Are there any recalls or known failures of the head gasket in the suburbans. I ahve had many vehicles with more than 100k miles and never a head gasket problem. This suv is used for light duty to and from work, 60 miles r/t.

1997 chevy suburban in-tank fuel sending unit fire: bought vehicle used with 88000 miles. Events leading up to the failure / burn up of the unit included intermittent fuel pump andfuel gauge failure, had pump replaced by patrick gmc, problem persisted, had dealer wolf chevrolet check fuel pressure throughout system (ok). Also noticed an intermittent burning smell.ithen purchased from the dealer a replacement sending unit and another fuel pump, as soon as i took the sender out of the tank it was obviously charred and the modular connector burnt to a crisp, wires completely exposed with the insulation gone partially disintegrated the abs plug. This thing got really hot repeatedly. The lower explosive limit was luckily never reached within the tank or there could have been a spontaneous explosion, especially if the tank lost its seal and allowed outside air inside, (such as when the tank is empty and is pulling vacuum), for instance unscrewing the gas cap in ideal conditions next to a gas pump with a 44 gallon tank void sucking in as much oxygen in as the filler tube will allow, and hitting that glowing red hot sending unit. Old part is in my possession and is the original factory sender.incident date is approx. When i performed the repair and discovered the burned up sender.

Transmission: torque converter blew up.....fuel pump failed and had to be replaced, wiring overheated and insulation melted off inside fuel tank .....steering: erratic while making right turn

There is a pin hole in the rear fuel feed hose, causing fuel to leak, consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer replaced the rear fuel feed hose.

Engine quit just like shutting off of ignition switch. The problem turned out to be the fuel pump.while removing the fuel pump assembly noted that the attaching plug for the fuel pump had arced destroying the plug, and the wire supplying the power to the pump had all the insulation burned off and the wire was partially melted.this is a serious safety issue, as the arcing and melting of wires inside the fuel tank could cause and explosion if the fuel/air misture reached stoichiometric conditions.

Although their were no fatalities or injuries involved in reference to the master cylinder/ fuel pump, the lost of power brakes caused me to almost veer into a brick building. I hope the info provided will draw attention to the problems i've had since purchasing this vehicle.

Had fuel pump failure. When serviced, the electrical wires inside the gas tank were burned and the connector was melted inside the tank. The insulation on the gray wire was melted off and the wire was burnt. Was very lucky that it did not explode. If the tank had been empty, it would have because of the presnece of oxygen in an empty tank. Went to bob richards chevrolet in august,ga and they said it was not a safty issue and that they knew of the problem. Had to pay $700.00 out of my pocket because of this problem that chevrolet knows about and won't recall.

Intermittent stalling problem. Fuel pump replaced in an attempt to solve the problem, however the problem continues.

While traveling without any indication vehicle engine stalled. Vehicle was service by dealer technician notice fuel driver pump needed to be replace. Please provide further information.ts

Fuel injection pump failed on two occasions causing loss of power brake and steering.

The fuel pump and fuel sender had to be replaced. But what was troubling was the statement from the mechanic that we were lucky it did not explode.i kept the parts that were replaced and the evidence is clearly there that the vehicle could have exploded.i am very concerned that other owners of the suburban may not be as lucky to catch it in time.

Due to the defective fuel pump, the wiring in the fuel tank melted, causing the vehicle to stall, which almost caused an accident.cause unknown.please provide further details.

Transmission starting failing at 50,000 (coded slippage).going down highway and blew tranny fluid all over the place leaving us stranded.transmission shifts hard in 1st and 2nd gear.steering has momentary oversteer, causing the feeling of slipping on ice (safety concern as no control over vehicle), replaced rotors three times, replaced fuel sending and wiring unit (wires had actually melted inside the gas tank!!). What next!!!! this vehicle only has 73,000 on it.we do not pull anything behind it, so feel that tranny should not have failed.why will chevrolet not recall these problems? have heard others say that the radiator is not big enough to handle cooling the engine and transmission, essentially causing early transmission failure due to overheating.chevrolet needs to address these issues before there isloss of life or a bad accident. This is a chronic problem with my vehicle.it is not as wide spread as g.m. Would like me to believe.i know others in california with the identicle vehicle as me with no problems.g.m. Blames the government for the gas additives.i am the one who is stranded because of this problem.i bought a new vehicle for dependability.i have a car that can and will break down any where and at any time and i am still making payments on it.i have written to the heads of the corperate offices at g.m. With my concerns and complaints but they have yet to repond to me seriously.they have customer service contact me.customer service people can not solve this problem!!i end up more frustrated after speaking to them.i know that they are only doing their job and can only do so much.i need a real solution to this potentially dangerous condition that my car had when i bought it.i want the dependability that i had expected, when i bought this car.for my safety and the safety of my family.thank you for any assistance you can provide me with in this frustrating matter.sincerely yours, [xxx]. The fuel injection pump failed intermittently, causing the vehicle to stall.dealership repaired the problem, but problem recurred.

Engine check light came on 1st then a various other probles began occuring as we tried to get our vehicle home.when we got it to the dealer's repair shop we were told that the #2 fuel injector had started leaking and filled the whole electrical system with gas. This happened again 4 monthes later when the #5 injector started leaking.both times the dealer told us that we were lucky that the vehicle didn't start on fire.

Gas tank leak.

The connection and wires that run the fuel pump had burned and melted, due to this failure the fuel pump was replaced.

Fuel pump wiring inside the fuel tank short circuited, and could have caused my suburban to blow up, since i had just filled it with over 30 gallons of gas that morning. My fuel pump had to be replaced, along with a new wiring assembly and float mechanism. My mechanic said the short circuit was more than likely due to over amperage of the fuel pump. That in turn, caused the wires inside the fuel tank to melt together and short out the ecm fuse, twice. I believe chevrolet is very lucky that no one was hurt. I hope others are as lucky as i was! p.s. Power steering and brakes are also very poor!! bad design...1997 was a lemon suburban, and should have been recalled and designed all over again!

The fuel injection pump has failed again on my 1997 chevy suburban, 6.5 liter diesel engine. I have owned this car for two years. The vehicle history from my dealership shows this will be the 6th fuel injection pump to be installed on this vehicle, all of which are covered by gm's 120,000 factory warranty & a 12 month 12,000 mile service guarantee after the 5th pump was installed. August of 2003, the pump failed while driving in my neighborhood & was replaced when the mileage was at 116,503, under factory warranty. June 27, 2004, and mileage of 128,300 (11,800 miles later) the pump has failed again. The pump failed on a very busy & dark street at nighttime on a bend in the road as i was driving home with my wife & two kids in the car.when it failed the engine died and we were stuck in traffic. The car is black and it was dark, unable to move, we were almost rear ended by several cars coming up the hill and rounding the bend in the road. Eventually i was able to get the car started and it ran just enough to allow me to get the car out of harm's way before dying again. I then had it towed to the dealership that had performed the last fuel injection pump. At this point, it is still in the shop and the service writer told me that injection pump had gone bad and that he is currently waiting for warranty approval for replacement as well as the new pump itself to arrive. I have spoken to many owners of chevy and gmc trucks and suburbans with the 6.5 liter diesel, years 1994-1999, via the following website http://thedieselpage.com.apparently, this is a very common problem that gm should resolve. To date, gm has only increased the factory warranty from 100,000 miles to 120,000 in an attempt to make good. This is still a serious safety issue when you lose power and become a serious safety hazard in traffic. Gm needs to come up with a permanent fix that prevents this from happening again, not just one that lasts for a few miles and then happen all over again.

Door locks and latches are defective on all four doors. Owner notesdoor almost came open because ofthe problem.when locks are pulled up they are hard to push down. Possible design flaw.

I own a1997 chevy suburban lt.we asked a local chevy dealer to fix the doors to close properly, which they claimed to do.i noticed that the door did not line up and they said they adjusted the strike plate.evidently that means they used a sledge hammer. "check engine soon" light comes on after short highway drive (about 30 minutes). Then transmissions shifts hard from 1st to second gear, associated with a hard clunk when finally it shifts. Dealer has replaced a "spring" with a heavier duty one, but fix is temporary. Code 1870 shows up as diagnosis at dealer. L60e transmissions are the culprit.

Transmission shifts hard - need to be replaced for the third time. P1870 error code.this is a common problem according to this site andmany other internet sites. Gm technicians are all familiar and the only fix is to replace the transmission. Gm should be accountable for this - it appears to be a product defect.

Transmission binded in first gear and slipped in middle gears.it was determined there was coolant and/or water in the transmission and the color was a dark green/yellow color.when transmission pulled off there was much metal, bearings, and a 2 to 3 inch bolt from the valve body.also found cracks in sunshell.input drum and pump vain and clutch(es) needed replacing.in summary, it needed an overhaul.

Transmission shifts very abruptly from gear to gear after car is driven at highway speeds for a length of time (usually 10 miles or more).dealer has checked the transmission and everything appears fine (no error codes) but continues to have problem.looks like the ecm is bad but because the codes are not present, no one is willing to diagnose.

The transmission failed twice.

Chevrolet did not pay for any of the repairs. They offered to pay half, when i did not accept , they withdrew the offer. At the time my vehicle was in the shop there were 3 others in for the same problem. They all had to have the transmissions replaced. I believe there is a definite problem with the transmissions they have put in these vehicles, and they are not standing behind them. My vehicle has always been properly serviced by chevrolet, and it has not been abused. I feel that these vehicles should be recalled and chevrolet have to fix them.

Transmission failed, causing vehicle to havesudden loss of speed...almost rearended.

Abs failure, electrical failure and front and rear brake failure. Our chevy suburban has just over 50,000 miles and is past the warranty mileage. On a trip to las vegas, the truck started to jerk fiercly into gear. When i accelerated, the truck would jerk into gear. The transmission specialist that did the repairs advised us that the torque converter had gone out, and shrap metal was getting into the transmission fluid. This happened in a matter of 1 day. The technician also advised us that he had performed the same repairs on 3 other chevy suburbans that day alone. We were told that this was not caused by "normal wear and tear"and that this should not be happening to a truck with only 50,000 miles. I took the truck in to get the tires balanced, and was told that the front brakes needed to be replaced. When the technician was beginning to remove the brake pads- he noticed that there were cracks in the rotors. We were advised that the cracks were heat cracks, and that we would need to purchase new rotors. Once again, we were told that this was not caused by"normal wear and tear".

The torque converter clutch relay in the transmission overheated, causing excessive pressure, which caused the transmission fluid to push the dip stick up out of the dipstick tube.then the transmission fluid escaped.traveling down the undercarriage of the vehicle, the transmission fluid hit the exhaust manifold and ignited into a flame that burned along the undercarriage of the vehicle (including the steel plate under the gas tank) and extended two feet beyond the rear of the vehicle.we were forced to evacuate ourselves and our four children from the vehicle along side the highway.four other vehicles were forced off the road as white smoke hindered their field of vision.the mil indicator (i.e., check engine light) had a code of p1870 (transmission slipping).this code has been associated with hundreds of torque converter clutch relay failures in gm/chevy full-size pick-ups, suburbans, and tahoes (discovered by searching for "p1870" on the internet and queries at the nhtsa website). Technicians have determined that the tcc relay is undersized and tends to overheat causing major transmission damage (in my case, a full transmission re-build was required - $2000 plus towing and rental car).technicians say that there is an aftermarket tcc relay made by sonnax that, when installed, prevents this problem from occurring.this is a serious safety issue (just look at the black charring on the bottom of my gas tank shield) that caused great peril to my wife, four children, and myself.gm needs to be held accountable to correct this potentially fatal failure.

Differential housing bolt sheered off into rear axle gears.dt

Had taken vehicle to dealership over 4 times due to the rear axle leaking. Mechanic had them replaced.

I had the universal joints replaced, (dealer stated it was needed), and ever since, i have noise which seems to come from driveshaft.i had them ( dealer ) check, and they said that it was the tires, or perhaps a bearing. This noise was not present prior to getting u-joints, however i also had cupping on a right front tire, and they replaced a model, or something. I saw on the ntsa bulletinno. 9610 of jan 4, 2000 , that 1997 suburbans had a component problem.

Rear shaft seals are leakingfuel onto the brake drums, which could result in brake loss, cause unknown.

Abs system was activating due to defect in snap ring of transmission.the brakes would fail at slow speed causing the abs system to think the rear tires were sliding, therefore the abs system would work.the reason for this was the snap ring in the transmission was mispositionedcausing the output shaft to have to much end play, therefore causing the vehicle speed sensor to lose signal, and the abs system would kick in everytime you stopped.the computer never logged that the abs system had ever been working, or had ever worked.after reassemble the transmission correctly everything appears to be working fine. This problem appear to have caused abnormal wear in the rear brake shoes, due to the fact that the abs was working all the time.after this wore out the shoes, the brakes started failing.

Brakes locked suddenly and the vehicle shook violently because oil was put in the master cylinder.

Consumer states that the anti lock brake system on the vehicle will intermittenly come on with out applying the brake. *mr

Brakes are almost nonexistent when driving in 4-wheel drive.they make a very deep sound and the vehicle skids and the pedal locks up.in 2-wheel drive they are squishy.

First time applied brakes at intersection, extented stopping. Brakes checked ok, replaced brakes anyway. Six mo. Latter, second time, driving 25 mph. Dry, clean paved road. Applied brakes, anti-lock comes on, brakes failed, caused accident. Traveled at least 2 an a half car length before inpact. Suburban checked, only thing found was brake oil read at 190 degrees, after driving 1 mile.

Dt: the contact was driving at a low speed and applied brake pressure and the abs pulsated.there was extendedstopping distance as indicated in a current recall on the anti lock brakes. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who replaced both wheel speed sensors on the front brakes.that corrected the problem ,however, in august of this year the problemrecurred two years later.the vehicle was returned to a dealer.the dealer did replace one of the wheel speed sensors, but the other one was cleaned and kept on the brakes.since this repair there have been no further problems.the contactcontacted gm, and filed a complaint. I have a 1997 chevy suburban with a 7.4 engine. For the most part its been a good vehicle, but the brakes are another story. The suburban has been through 2 sets of front brakes, and none in the rear. Being concerned, the 3rd mechanic to really spend time figuring out the problem, found out the brake pressure modulator valve has malfunctioned. $800 for replacement. Doing a little research, gm had recalled this part on several of there 2000 suv models. Contacted the gm customer service line, and they told me that it is an "old vehicle" and gm will not do anything about it. So i guess gm's safety systems are only good for 10 years. This will be my last gm vehicle i will ever own.

Tires locked under hard braking on dry and wet pavement while on 2-wheel drive mode on paved roads.

The abs brakes has came on 561 times in one year and the dealer has tried to fix the brake 5 times, and there is no change in the failure of the brakes. When the driver applied the brakes the pedal went to the floor while the truck was going 10mph. The truck did not stop at that speed. The dealer still has not fixed the problem about the pedal going to the floor, and the brakes do not hold when this happens. The driver has contacted the dealer 20 times, and they still have not called him back yet. Hetook matters in his own hands and hopes that nhtsa can assit him with any kind of help.

While applying the abs brakes the vehicle has extended stopping distance. Sometimes, upon applying the abs brakes, the vehicle stalls and there are no brakes at that time.

Abs failed during a panic stop.vehicle's rear looses road adhesion and swings to the right, then the left side starts to skid and the entire vehicle begins to wobble.

In july/august 2005 i began experiencing activation of the abs at very low speedsof5-10 mph in 1997 chevrolet suburban.i took the car to repair shop and found out that the front brake units, calipers, etc.,were corroded andneeded to be replaced.i did this.also ,found out that the abs units were not reading the speed correctly and this was causing the abs bumping at low speeds.advised they should be replaced at cost of $1200!in january 2006 i read about the suburban recall for malfunctioning abs and unusual corrosion of brakes.unfortunately, the recall started for 1999 models.i believe my 1997 vehicle has the same problem.i contacted the local chevroletdealer where i bought the vehicle, but was told it was not covered by the recall and they recommended the abs units be cleaned and that they will function properly.the other repair shop (who did the brake repairs) recommended against cleaning"and said in their experience this doesn't work. Suburban has only 61,000 miles, so it has not been over used.i put about 6,000 miles a year on it, mostly for pulling a horse trailer and for this i am very concerned about safe braking.i believe that this 1997 suburban has the same problem as the 199s.i've spent about $500 on the brake repairs so far and the abs will cost me another $1200.for a vehicle that gets so little use by me, this is a lot of money.i would like the 1997 to be included in the recall.i am upset by the expense of repairing these apparent manufacturing flaws.

When i apply the brakes to my 1997 chevy suburban, the abs kicks on and pulsates extending the stopping distance tremendously.there has been a recall on this for recent year suburbans, but not as far back as the 1997 model.

I purchased my 1997 3/4ton 4x4 suburban in oct 97. After only two months having it,in december, 1997 i began experiencing problems with the front brakes squeaking. Took to the dealership they replaced the front pads. Then 2months later,in february, 98 same thing happened again. I became concerned as to why this was happening. This has been going on every 2-3 month since, and we are nowin april, 99 and i am still having the same problem. Lucky to get 1-2 thousand miles on the pads. Have been to dealer approximately 10 timesfor this. Dealer was concerned as to why they were wearing so quick. Now 4-5 sets in this short of time. The last two times i have taken it to them i left the dealership with them still squeaking, and i wanted to have fixed. Now added to this problem is the front end pulling to the left front when you apply the brakes, and when it is raining out the vehicle hops all over the road when you try to stop. It is very scary. This is now a major concern, and i am afraid it could be dangerous. Immarch ,99 i brought back to service manager for the squeak, pull of the front end. When i left that day vehicle had nothing done to it. Service manager said he would contact gmc rep.have him come out maybe he could resolve the problem. This was on mar3,1999. I waited till apr 8,1999, dorian taft gmc rep. Came out. I requested in writing that i be present when he was out so we could discuss my concerns. I was never called, i went to the dealership after work spoke to the service manager who informed me that the gmc rep was in a hurry didnt have time to discuss the issue with me or check my vehicle out like it should have been, and that was whole purpose. Im very upset and this is totally unsat. My vehicle concerns problems still stand.i believe this is very unsafe & think the problem needs to be addressed and taken care of now. Longest set of pads lasted approx 2000 miles. Front rims are a constant black. Please help me out.

Driving the suburban about 30mph and vehicle in front stopped, applied foot to the brake pedal to stop, and the pedal just went down to the floorboard and the vehiclehit the back of truck.

Ongoing problem with rear wheel brakes systemnot working. Vehicle been inspected/repaired by two differentdealers. On several occasions brake pads have been replaced. Also, four rotors have been replaced and turnd more then twice each.problemstill occurring.

Excessive front disc pad wear - vehicle pulls to left when braking- description is the same for eachincident -pads replacedanddrums turned at 9948 and 33000 miles - obviously there is a design problem with these brakes.

When applying the brakes the steering wheel vibrates very hard, and vehicle could possibly lose control. Took to dealer, they said it was out of warranty.

When driving at any speed and applying the brakes, they will go straight to the floorboard, and the abs system will kick in.consumer had to pump the brakes hard to stop the vehicle.

Abs brakes problems on my 1997 chevy tahoe 4dr 4-wheel drive. The brakes have been terrible since i obtained this vehicle when it was brand new. They would grunt & groan, skip and act erratic. On ice and snow, i would actually go faster when i would apply the brakes and slide much faster than a car with regular brakes. On dry roads at slow speeds in town driving, the brakes didn't seem to take hold all the time. There would be a delay action when applying the brakes.i almost rear-ended other vehicles three times, through no fault of my own. I hate abs brakes and would like to buy one without it. Abs brakes systems are very dangerous, especially on this 1997 chev tahoe 4-wheel drive. I checked with mechanics and they all say that's just abs brakes, and i have to put up with it. This is wrong as they are a very real danger. I have to be extremelycareful allowing substantial distance between vehicles and then its not safe. I think i have a lemon and know there are lots of other complaints about it around here. How about a little help with recalls and a new vehicle?

While driving the brakes aren't working because the front brakes are not strong to stop the truck, this also causesextended stopping distance.

Emergency brake cable engaged by itself sporadically. Also excessive wear of brake pads,3 sets of pads wore out from 8,000 milesto 48,000 miles of wear/ rotors were replaced due to defective hub. Also,2 brake sensors and 2 sets ofbrake calipers were replaced. Dealer notified, and most repairs and labor was done under warranty, otherrepairs weredone at consumer's cost.

When applying the brakes in wet weather the abs locks up and vehicle skids for an excessive amountofdistance. Dealer can't duplicate the problem.

Consumer experiencing ongoing problem with vehicle braking system. Intermittently wheneverbrakes are applied in wet condition the brakes would delay in stopping. Also, whenever the brakes areused in an emergencey situation the vehicle would not stop properly, it would continue to go until vehicle came to 5-10 mph then it would grab, causing vehicle to lock-up. After the lock-up, the brake system would pop loose when consumer applied the accelerator. Dealer notified and informed consumer that the problem could not be duplicated.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle was having abs problems.while applying the brake pedal to stop at slower speeds the abs activated causing greater stopping distances.there is a nhtsa recall, # 05v379000, regarding the abs.the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the year of the vehicle.repairs have been made and the manufacturer has been alerted.

Abs engages at slow speed in normal driving conditions and occasionally following braking when cornering. Decrease in braking distance also noticed as it feels as if slipping occurs in brakes. Grinding noise also attendant to this situation. Dealer service replaced sensor and hub assembly. Brakes had been replaced previously at 70,000 miles, which i consider too early on this vehicle.

This was a major acid discharge not a leak!all repairs as yet under warranty. 1 in 10 vans to the garage reported to have this defect. Garage only replaced the other brake line when we offered to pay for it.when we offered to pay for it.

Power steering keeps fluctuating between feeling tight and sloppy.at certain points the steering wheel seems to be pulled from my grasp, and oversteering occurs. Steering also sometimes makes a moaning noise.also, brakes need to be replaced every 20,000 miles.last time i had brakes replaced at dealer, i had to return 5 times to have them corrected.i was told shims broke off the front pads and were binding.all i know is that i could see the rotors glowing blue and the brakes smelled like they were burning, they were also making a horrible grinding noise when they were warm.

Vehicle in front stopped suddenly necessitatingbraking. However, abs brakes failed; engine stalled, resulting in a crash/injury.

Owner has experienced abs problems.

Driving along and stopped at a traffic light, light changed and vehicle proceeded approximately 5mph. Vehicle ahead stopped, tried to stop, applied brakes, almost to the point of standing and the vehicle would not stop.

Whenever the brakes are applied, they would pull to the left onto another lane. Sometimes would pull to the right onto another lane. Have taken vehicle to dealership 17 times and nothing was found wrong with brakes. The manufacturer has closed the files on the suburban. *ml

Sudden brake failure; brake pedal depressed completely to floor; small amount of braking capability remained; loud mechanical"crunch" sound from underneath chassis.

When traveling on wet pavement about 10-15 mph and upon depressing the brake pedal to make a gradual stop, the anti-lock brakes lockedup, causing the vehicle to go into a skid, resulting in extended stopping distance. Consumer has contacted the dealer. Please provide any further details.

Pulls left while driving down road or when braking.multiple service attempts.still not fixed.dealer cannot fix, gm won't replace vehicle.vehicle is not safe and is a safety hazard.

Vehicle experienced more assist tosteering at 30 mph which caused loss of control.the dealer replaced the electronic solenoid relay as possible cause of power assist to steering assembly.

Brakes failed.

Leaking brake fluidshorted electrical wires, causing abs to fail.

Whenever brakes are applied, would hear a loud noise , like clunking or banging sound. After brakes are applied, vehicle would fail to stop or slow down right away.went through an intersection due to no braking power.

While driving brakes overheated, causing consumer to crash. Took vehicle to dealer, and dealer said that brakesoverheated. Mechanic said thatin stop and go situations brakes will overheat. Consumer statedthat this was very scary, and was concerned thatcould not stop a vehicle.

Ongoing problem with rear wheel brakes systemnot working. Vehicle been inspected/repaired by two differentdealers. On several occasions brake pads have been replaced. Also, four rotors have been replaced and turnd more then twice each.problemstill occurring.

Brake pads wore prematurely, and the calipers made contact with the rotors.the front brake system/ calipers and the front brakes were replaced.the dealer has been notified.

I started experencing problem at appox. 12000 miles when the front brakeswore out prematurlly, some after at appox. 20000 mile i had unusual tire wear, ( i was told it was my fault) it was the right torsion bar out of adjustment and even though the vehicle had only 27668 mile i had to pay 1/2 the cost appox $225.00 after fighting all the way to the executive offices, the speed sensitive steering started actting up at appox. 40000 miles suddenly causing the steering wheel to slip unaccpectedly.this part was replace n/c , i have gone through 3 alternatorsthe first at appox. 38000 mile standing me in buffalo ,tx 120 miles from home on a sunday night, the second and third happeded in the city however i now carry a spare altenator and tools because who knows when it will go out next, i have replaced the positive side battery cables twice because of design the loosen and the acr and short out, the auto matic transmission went out at 53939 due to coolent getting into the unit i had to pay 25% of this repair appox. $525.00 that transmission failed at 69015 only 15k+miles later with the warrenty card in hand i thought maybe this was it ,at 107,267 miles that transmission failed and with only 38k+ mile on a unit that carrys a 3yr/50k warrenty gm refuses to fix or replace the unit my truck has been sitting at the dealershipsince 06/15/2001 while i have been once again fighting with gm to no avail ,( i was offer a customer loyalty cert. For $500. 00 to settle this issue the transmission cost $2500. To replace not including the motor mount that broke when the unit locked up at appox. 35 mph all the advertising million and billions of $$$$$ should be spent making sure that then presistent problem do not accure, not when you spend 35k- 45k- for a vehicle.

I had brake trouble on this car from day one.many brake pads, two master cylinders, many shoes and drums.this vehicle is defective because it weight is too great for the braking system.i would like some help.please call.my accident was caused by brake failure.dealership where i live in kings mtn, now diamond chevrolet admits.i took the car to the dealer in shelby, nc carter chevrolet eight times in one year for brake problems.

Excessive front disc pad wear - vehicle pulls to left when braking- description is the same for eachincident -pads replacedanddrums turned at 9948 and 33000 miles - obviously there is a design problem with these brakes.

Premature disc brake failure and vehicle pulls to right .

The braking system starts to shakeand vibrate as if driving on cobblestone road then braking system shakes violently from front ofcar this problem seems to happen only when temps are very high in the 100 degree range as we go to the desert often. This happens several times a year. The vibrations start as we are driving and you can feel the front end start to vibratethe gets worse, if the brakes are applied when this is shaking the whole car shakes voilentlyand is hard tostop almost makes the car out of control. This can go on for as long as 45 mins to an hour as we drive downthe road or freeway. Then it jusst stops shakin and does not ahppen again for a few days , but if we are still in the heat it wil happen again. When we get home and goto the dealer theycannotfeel the problem so they say there is no problem my wife and children are affraid to ride in the car when we go on trips now.this problem must be fixed. I love this car and it suits my needs but this has to be fixed.

Upon depressing the brake pedal when traveling down an incline, consumer noticed the pedal traveled to the floorboard, making it very difficult to stop and control the vehicle. Consumer also experienced excessive wear of the front and rear brake shoes and pads.consumer has contacted the dealer, dealer has replaced the shoes and pads.

Brake pads failed.

The brake pads had worn down excessively, causing grindingnoises, like metal to metal. Taking vehicle to dealer's to check & have them repaired/replaced.

Loss of abs brakes , resulting in a rearend collision.brakes went floor, abs light had come on after incident. Dealer has replaced brake soes and pads.

Front brakes wore out prematurely at 12,000 miles.since 1997 had been replaced seven times. Dealer and manufacturer were contacted, but problemhad not been resolved. Also, automatic transmission failure.

The brakesvibrate excessively andhesitate when they are applied, making itdifficult to stop vehicle.manufacturer was contacted by owner.

While driving the rear brakes aren't strong enough to putting all the braking responsibility on them.

While drivingfront brake line collapsed, causing steering wheel to jerk toleft, cause unknown.

This was a major acid discharge not a leak!all repairs as yet under warranty. 1 in 10 vans to the garage reported to have this defect. Garage only replaced the other brake line when we offered to pay for it.when we offered to pay for it.

Defective battery leaked onto the brake line which caused no braking ability andcouldresult ina crash.common problem.please provide further information.

Although their were no fatalities or injuries involved in reference to the master cylinder/ fuel pump, the lost of power brakes caused me to almost veer into a brick building. I hope the info provided will draw attention to the problems i've had since purchasing this vehicle.

Vehicle has a steering defect causing vehicle to oversteer.yh

Erratic power steering assist while driving resulting in erratic control at highway speeds. Started in 2006 and ended in 2009. Vehicle was taken to dealer numerous times to no avail.

While drivingand turning right the steeringreleases pressure and thesteering wheel moves to the right about three inches, and then the pressure gets restored. Please provide any futher information.

While traveling and without any indication vehicle would travel from left or right without steering wheel being turned, sensor was gone.please provide further information.

My steering jumps to the left unexpectily as if someone grabs the wheel and turns it fast . Nlm

Subject vehicle has pulled, severely, to the right since purchase. The saleman said an alignment would fix the problem. The vehicle has been realigned three or four times, the steering wheel sensor has been replaced and the castor adjusted. The service department doesn't seem to know what else to do. The vehicle steering continues to pull dangerously to the right, especially when driving on a road (interstate or local) which has been sloped in that direction. The steering wheel constantly pulls in a clockwise direction. When driving in town or on the interstate, if the steering wheel were to slip out of your hand or you were to let go of the steering wheel for a second, the vehicle would run off the road. The steering also feels unstable and vague when driving on the interstate.

The steering system was replaced due to failure. Problem still exist.

Abs failure, electrical failure and front and rear brake failure. This correspondence is not available via .i believe the letter may have been misplaced while in transition from dimms to artemis via tran tech employees.the power windows and air condition failed.there was a violent gear change between 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive. The battery leaked and also the cables were corroded, there was a loud noise from the steering column, the consumer experienced complete steering failure while making a left turn.

Please note there seems to be a problem in steering that allows steering pressures to change while turning wheel, it is an odd feel that is noticed at low speeds

Vehicle steering suddenly and abruptly fails while in motion.on one occurrance while traveling 70 mph steering failed and vehicle moved to the left half a lane width; driver had no control.

While driving 45-50 mph steering went out/vehicle veered to right, andno accident. Steering sensor was replaced. On 27 june 2001 consumer was driving 50 mph whensteering went out, vehicle veered to right again. No accident, dealer replaced steering sensor. Dealer stated he has replaced lots of sensors.

While driving steering resistance holds, resulting in dangerous oversteer. Dealer has been contacted.

While driving at 60/70 mph, the vehicle suddenly lost power steering, which caused an accident.

The contact owns a 1997 chevrolet suburban.when the vehicle is fully loaded, the contact notices that the vehicle becomes difficult to steer.he has taken the vehicle to a mechanic 15 times and they have made numerous repairs, including various components of the steering unit, steering sensors, actuator, and also additions to the springs of the suspension system.all of the repairs have not adequately repaired the failures.the contact called the manufacturer and was referred back to the dealer.the failure mileage was 8,464 and current mileage was 86,000. Updated 10/08/08. *ljupdated 10/10/08.

Steering sensor replaced several times due to steering jerking and directional problems, not able to rectify, finally consumer had the steering sensor taken out to remedy problem (design). *mjs

Variable effort steering kicks in/out, causing a significant reduction in the back pressure of the steering wheel. The effect involves momentary oversteer as if someone has grapped the steering wheel and moved it 4-5 inches toward insid eof curve. If driven on icy roads, could lead to loss of control.

Steering sensor has failed again this time at 38,000 miles.presently not safe to drive.

While driving at approx 55 mphsteeringlost power for about 3 seconds to 10 seconds. During this time consumer cannot control vehicle, it begins to wander from side to side, in order to gain control, needs to apply brakes.eventually power comes back. Took vehicle to dealership 2nd time, dealer changed steering sensor.1st time, dealer claimed could not find problem.

When driving at any speed the steering wheel is going to the left or to the right or wherever the steering takes the vehicle. Dealer replaced steering wheel sensor.

Intrmittentlywhen turningwheel slightlyvehicle oversteers. Dealer is inspecting vehicle.

Heater and ac controls went out twice.factory replaced them @ $125, then 9 months later it went out again.factory said it was under 12 months, but i had driven over 12,000 miles so it was not under warranty any longer.windsheild wiper module goes bad.wipers will suddenly stop or wont turn on.on 3rd module now.brakes, constant grinding and weak stops.have replaced rotors 4 times.same results.steering loses tension when steering to the left.problem is still ongoing but has made me almost lose control several times.

The failure manifested itself by means of oversteering to the point of losing traction and skidding on rh or lh front wheel depending in which direction i was turning.it usually happened at approx. 30 mph.it is like the vehicle is "taking over" the steering.this occurred many times until i had the "steering wheel position sensor" replaced.according to chevrolet's customer service they are looking in to the problem, but at this time do not feel that it is a safety problem.i feel othervise since i almost lost control of the vehicle the first couple of times it happened.

At speeds of over 10 miles per hour, the steering wheel jerks left and right intermittently.i then have to correct and/or oversteer to keep the truck on the road.this first began in 1999, at approx 30,000 miles on the vehicle. *nlm

Steering wheel over compensates when making a turn. Dealer has replacedsensor several times. However, problem still exists. Please provide additional information.

Vehicle wanders when speed is in excess of 45 mph.

New electronic variable orifice steering system does not function well due to a design flaw. There is a lack of road feel at most speeds, and more importantly, lack of normal steering return to center after steering.

While making a left turn vehicle lost power steering.the vehicle began to wander and jerked to the left.there was recall 03v527000 for the steering gear bearing, but this vehicle was not included due to vin.this occurred due to the sensor controlling power assist (evo sensor/exhaust valve opening). *sc

While travelingand when going around a bend vehicle lost steering. Dealer stated evo sensor needed to be replaced. Please provide further information.

I bought a used suburban and since i have owned it i have been having trouble with the steering.while driving down the road the steering wheel jerks suddenly to the right. I reallyhave to keep a tight grip on the steering wheel while driving, especially when on a road with alot of twists and turns because it jerkes hard and is very dangerous.i worry that with the steering wheel jerking it is going to cause a wreck because it sometimes has sent me towards the lane next to me or off the road completly, this could be a serious problem.this is not something that just happens every once in awhile, it happens everytime i am driving.i have seen other complaints listed on this site for the exact same thing.i just wonder if there is a recall or what will remedy this problem.

When driving vehicle at any speed , steering failed, vehicle will not stay stable on the the hwy, continues to pull to left or right, in for repair, no problem found, variable steering system.

The vehicle experienced erratic steering ability, which made the vehicle difficult to control.

Ongoing / erratic problem with power steering system causing momentary loss of steering control.dealer notified, and replacedsteering sensor. Year later problem reoccurred. Please feel free to provide any further details.

Steering wheel unexpectedly turns during turning maneuvers at slow to moderate speeds.feels like a quick tug on steering wheel and then returns back to original position.

When driving steering wheel feelsloose. It moves very easily up or down without using the adjustment lever.

Sterering wheel rotation sensor failed causing the steering wheel to jerk while driving. This family has three suburbans all the same year/model and they where all repaired for the same problem. Nlm

Steering front sensor has become defective and replaced twice, causing loss of control.

New electronic variable orifice steering system has a design problem, it demonstrates lack of road feel at most speeds, and more importantly a lack of normal steering return to center after a turn.

Starter failed 3 times - complete lock-up 4.u-joint failed twice - sealed/non-greasable poor access to add grease fitting

As consumer turns the steering wheel she sometimes reaches a spot like a( black hole) where she loses control momentarily. There is an open investigation at this time.

Vehicle would oversteerwhile making a turn . Dealer stated evo sensor needed to be replaced.

While driving the vehicle suddenly the steering wheel became loose, causingthe driver to lose control and running into a ditch.the dealer has been notified.

Ea-99-011; while driving and upon attempting to make a left or a right hand turn, steering wheel locked up.problemwas more likely to occurwhen making a left hand turn.also, noticed play in steering wheel ,causing vehicle to pull left and right. Consumer has contacteddealer and manufacturer, case number c00509683. Please provide any further details.

There is a grinding in the steering column.

The vehicle would dart to the left or right especially going around a cure. The steering would have a momentary effect of having no resistance on the steering column.this problem would occur intermitently.the vehicle would also oversteer and made it hard to keep the vehicle going straight down the road.i recently had the steering gear box replaced and everything is working fine.

When making a turn the wheel loosens up and then will kick back in .

Failure/ loss of steering control without warning or change of steering wheel movement.

Steering wheel over compensates when making a turn. Dealer has replacedsensor several times. However, problem still exists. Please provide additional information.

When changing lanes or turning cornerssteering wheel becomes loose, and driver loses control of the vehicle. Dealer has changed the ecm chip and the problem still exists.

An intermittent problem. After turning a curb, the steering wheel would go limp or slack. Dealership had replaced the evo but problem has reappeared.

'variable effort steering' does not tighten up the faster you drive, also steering is too sensitive.

There is a grinding in the steering column.

There is an unanticipated steeringwheel movement at highway speeds.the dealer has been notified.

Brakeshad to be replaced every three to four months.also, power steering was defective, and made the steering wheel difficult to turn. Consumer was aware if the brakes malfunctioning in conjugation with the steering problem.

Vehicle steering would be very unstable and give way in turns at high and low speeds. Steering wheel was very loose and would be tight in a left turn and normal in right turns. Took it to the dealer and they said it was a bad steering gear box. I looked under the plastic shroud for the steering input shaft and the locking nut was loose. This steering problem seems to be a problem for other suburban owners as well, i don't htink this gear box is the only cause and don't think i should have to pay 1000.00 dollars for a repair that is a manufacturer defect.

Vehicle would wander while driving at 50 mph or more and oversteering would occur whenever changing lanes or making turns. Vehicle been in dealer shop on several occasions, and some repairs were made on gear box, but problem still occurs. Passing on information concerning nhtsa investigation.

The failure is the variable ratio steering which is meant to be high effort\low ratio once the vehicle reaches a certain speed (10-20 mph ? )(or gear?) what occurs is the steering will intermittently go back and forth between the high effort -'cruising' ratio and the low speed -low effort -quick ratio at a speed above when it should remain in the high effort mode.i also owned a 97 k1500 chevrolet pickup that also had a very similar problem. It however would stay one way or the other and not go between the 2 ratios which at least made it more predictable. It had a valve replaced under warrenty that fixed the problem at about 35,000.

Power steering is unreliable,surge/increase in steering power is very unpredictable.this vehicle has been todealer 5 times for this problem.first time the dealer said alignment was problem, not so. Second time the dealer replaced the power steering gear box, this fixed problem for 4 months. Third time the dealer replaced power steering gear box, power steering pump and flushed lines, this fixed problem for 5 months. Fourth time the dealer replaced the evo sensor on steering column, this fix lasted 15 months.fifth time the dealer stated that the evo sensor must be bad and will not replace under extended warrenty.after much investigation, i find that this is an ongoing problem specific to the 1997 suburban with the electronic control on the power steering system.there have been in excess of 75 reports of this or similar steering related problems.nhtsa should investigate this prior to there being any fatalities.

Steering while drivingat 55 mph itis hard to control the vehicle. Dealer diagnosed that shaft pitman broke.

I have owned a 86,93,95,and 97 suburban. So suburban steering is very familiar to me. The 1997 suburban steering is unsafe. When the vehicle was first purchased the variable assist failed pulling an rv trailer. Whenever a vehicle passed our suburban the steering had so much oversteerthat if turned in any direction it would dart left and right either going off the highway or in the other lane. Several attempts were made to repair the steering, then lemon law was invoked. Two more attempts were made, the final one resulted in all of the service manager's steering components being removed from his 98 truck and placed on the suburban. The steering was better but poor compared to the 95 and 93 suburban. Today the vehicle is still scary to drive on rutted wet roads at speed. Just recently a chip failed in the steering when turning left, causing over correction into other lanes. The dealer said this had happened in other vehicles and repaired the vehicle. Unless gm fixes this problem,my intent is to buy another vehicle that is safe for family. It will not be a gm suburban. The steering needs to be completely replaced with previous non variable assist.

When making a right or left turn, the steering failed.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

The low speed power assist intermittently activates at cruise speed when making course corrections such as turning to follow the road, turning to pass and turning to correct for side wind.

Steering tension changes drastically causing oversteering, steering also locks up when applying brakes.

Experience erratic steering.steering system makes erratic jolts in either direction.system was bled, but still persists.feels like power steering is unstable.

Ongoing problem; dealer's aware- no fixing problem- while driving exhibits a loose behavior at various speeds like driving on ice.

When making a right turn there is some oversteeringdue to a bad power steering: hydroboost unit.the dealer has been contacted.

Speed sensitive power steering does not operate properly, it has little if any road feel, the vehicle floats when driven in wind or around trucks and other traffic. Consumer feels the vehicle is very unstable, difficult to control.

Sudden, unexpected oversteering in turns, veers into turns, intermittent.

Apparent unrepairable dangerous steering situation, battery problem, transmission failure. Vehicle does not seem to merchantable for purpose for which it was offered for sale.

The power steering on right turns oversteers.it is like a sudden surge of power steering.since it is intermetant it is a suprise and has on a number of occasion the suprise was enough to almost lose control of the suburban. We had it in once for repair but they couldnt find anyting.it has become worse and we have taken it back again for a repair. The service man said he has had three other complaints of the same type of problem.

Intermittently when making a turn power steering wheel has too much play in it. This almost caused an accident.

The power steering failed, which caused an accident. The consumer was injured.

These trucks with this steering problem are very dangerous for drivers, passengers & other motorists around these vehicles.if no one has been killed yet because of this defect gm should do something before it's too late.

Speed sensitive steering fails when driving. Especially dangerous whennegotiating a turn, the steering is hard, the sss fails, causing thesteering to become loose, resulting in oversteering, causing swervingor loss of control.

When turning right, steering seems to assist more, causing abrupt oversteer. Happens intermitantly.

Erratic power steering assist while driving.

At speeds above 30 mph the steering becomes unstable/loose especially in turns when the vehicle jerks suddenly in the same direction as the turn.the vehicle also wanders at highway speeds and causes oversteering when changing lanes.this is a very unsafe situation when towing causing the trailer to swerve back and fourth.i bought an extended warranty on this vehicle and i am planning on taking it in to the dealership where i bought it to have it checked/repaired but based on the number of complaints i have read about this problem i believe this should be addressed by the manufacturer because it is a definite safety hazard.i have owned three gm trucks (1989,1993 and 1996) and none has felt as unstable or as dangerous as this suburban.if the dealer is unable to correct the problem under my extended warranty do i have any other recourse to correct this problem?

Steering on this vehicle at highway speedsis not positive, has a floating.. Wanderthat makes it feel like you have no steering, and when you try to recover,it over correctsand sways.

Steering suddenly jerked toward the direction of pressure on the steering wheel.this should be a recall emergency before it turns into causing fatalities like the tire situation.

Engine knocking occurs at cold temperatures 35f or below sounds come from lower engine rods possiblyor crankshaft .--dealer refuses to acknowledge both problems

No accidents.steering has begun instances of loss of control.information provided during discussions with local repair shops indicates the recirculating ball steering box may have a tendency to slip.this is consistent with the intermittant failure mode experienced during driving.the vehicle is a 1997 suburban c1500.it is not used to tow and has never been in an accident.we have owned it since new, all of the 104,000 miles have been driven by us, no children have driven this vehicle.the truck has been well cared for.we have experienced this 5 times, with the most recent being yesterday.no repairs have been made.

Power steering is unreliable,surge/increase in steering power is very unpredictable.this vehicle has been todealer 5 times for this problem.first time the dealer said alignment was problem, not so. Sudden, unexpected oversteering in turns, veers into turns, intermittent.

Failure of this component results in immediate and drammatic loss of normal power steering control when engaging in turns.the loss of resistence results in immediate oversteer which, at highway speeds, is very dangerous, sometimes causing the driver to drop a wheel from pavement.my writing is prompted by:1) experience with my suburban;2) a call to me today from a dealership mechanic who worked on my vehicle who informed me he had another bad one, identical to mine;3) i drove another suburban of the same vintage & mileage with the identical problem.though anecdotal, the multiple occurances in vehilces with which i am acquainted raise a compelling question about a dangerous problem with suburbans.thank you for your consideration.

I have had several owners of the suburban and tahoe line say that their power assist has failed also and had to endure costly/over priced repairs.dt

Loss of steering power and excessive play in the steering for up to 4-5 seconds at highway speeds.

Pulls left while driving down road or when braking.multiple service attempts.still not fixed.dealer cannot fix, gm won't replace vehicle.vehicle is not safe and is a safety hazard.

1.battery leaked acid while idle and ultimately failed.leak corroded positive power cable and undercoating.2. Erratic steering while driving - steering position sensor replaced first time.3. Starter failed 3 times - complete lock-up 4.u-joint failed twice - sealed/non-greasable poor access to add grease fitting

I have a newspaper article from 1999 stating nhtsa investigating this problem in 1997 to 1999 gmc vehicles.your data base shows no complaints, but the article stated 76 complaints in 1999 and 4 crashes.there must be more by now, and the replacement electronically variable orifice that was replaced in my vehicle has failed again.

Power steering hydroboost unit surges, makessteering wheel jerk in a different direction.

Ea9901 eratic power steering; when driving straight or more often on curves there is slip in the steering. The dealer is aware of the problem. The problem has not been corrected.

Intermittently vehicle would lose steering power.dealer has been notified. Please provide further information.

Vehicle experienced more assist tosteering at 30 mph which caused loss of control.the dealer replaced the electronic solenoid relay as possible cause of power assist to steering assembly.

Transmission: torque converter blew up.....fuel pump failed and had to be replaced, wiring overheated and insulation melted off inside fuel tank .....steering: erratic while making right turn

Ongoing / erratic problem with power steering system causing momentary loss of steering control.dealer notified, and replacedsteering sensor. Year later problem reoccurred. Please feel free to provide any further details.

Steering goes soft unexpectedly in turn, resulting in tendency to oversteer, possibly into oncoming traffic.

We had car looked at, small leak in power steering fixed, didn't help..found no major wear on any steering parts.... Interesting, sister has same car, with same problem, hers does this 'catch' feeling, turning left or right!i also feel the 'catch' if driving over an uneven spot on road going straight.

Power steering is unreliable,surge/increase in steering power is very unpredictable.this vehicle has been todealer 5 times for this problem.first time the dealer said alignment was problem, not so. Second time the dealer replaced the power steering gear box, this fixed problem for 4 months. I own a1997 chevy suburban lt.we asked a local chevy dealer to fix the doors to close properly, which they claimed to do.i noticed that the door did not line up and they said they adjusted the strike plate.evidently that means they used a sledge hammer. My wife was driving down the road and one of the locked doors opened up as she was driving down the road.luckily my 4 year old son was in his carseat. It has happened twice.she could not reclose the door and so she tied it shut. I found that the door latch was still shut.i held the handle up and manually lifted the latch after which the door would close. Another saftey issue; while driving down the road the steering wheel jerks suddenly to the right.i live in a mountainous and occasional snow area.i worry that with the steering wheel jerking, and sometimes it has sent me towards the lane next to me, this could be a serious problem.i have also had the power steering pump replaced once after the shaft completly seperated from the pump while i was driving down a steep mountain with 7boyscouts from a camping trip in the snow.let me tell you if that had been my wife in the car she probably would have been down the side of the cliff. In 2 1/2 yrs. Ihave replaced the four wheel drive actuator, door handles, transmission, rear end seals and axle, front end, a/c everything, windshield wiper switch of some sort, brakes every 20,000 or so, they tell me the head gasket is bad, there is a whining sound i think is the fan clutch, and now it looks like its either the u joints or thelimited slip clutches, hub or both. I do not feel that my wife and children are safe in this car. All lamb chevrolet of prescott valley azhas said is they warranty their vehicles to 36,000 miles. They offered to sell me one of their nice new tahoes.which he claims they have improved.oh yea the sales price is 42,000. On a 36,000 vehicle because i am upside down on the car they sold me 2 years ago.

Fuel pump and sending unit melted and shorted out causing car to stall on the road.torque convertorreplaced/ trans reconditioned, power steering box leaking/ replaced. Both catalytic converters replaced,ac compressor replaced. Numerous coolant leaks fixed. Windshield replaced due to defect. Battery replaced due to acid leak. Whats next?

Have had a total of 6 complaints dierctly connected with front steering, controlability, poor handling characteristics and 2 instances of total loss of control while driving in a straight line. The vehicle has 2 timwes suddenly swerved to the right while driving straight and the steering wheel does not move. Fortunately, both instances occured while traffic was light andno accident happened. The vehicle is parked at a chevrolet dealer's yard and chevrolet motor division has stated that no problem exists and that i should continue to drive. I have refused. Now i have determined to file a complaint with texas motot vehicle division and pursue the ;lemon law" because chevrolet has failed to recognize or take any action in an attempt to resolve the problem.

Experiencing unintended power steering assistance when making turns (tupically to the right), losing cotrol of steering for a brief moment before it recovers.

The truck is equipped with abs,and when braking the truck pulls to the left or right. Also, the floorboard lifts up and when the brake is released; the floorboard falls back down, and there is a strong odor present when towing something.

Side door is not locking/closing.

Left rear cargo door of chevrolet suburban never opened quite right.you had to push in on the door, pull the latch, and then open it.over time it has become extremely difficult to open.tip top chevrolet in fairbanks, ak, won't fix it.i believe it is a factory defect. Thank you for listening.

Hood latch on 1997 chevy suburban keep failing, hood flies up while driving.has happened 3 times in two years.

While driving there was vibration in the steering wheel.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Vehicle constantly jerks from left to right at any speed over 30 mph. It is very hard to keep on the road. It started at aprox 15,000 mi. I have changed tires and that did not help. A lot of my co-workers have the same problem with their truck too. If you ask service they know exactly what causes this and say it is not under warranty.

Vehicle would wander while driving at 50 mph or more and oversteering would occur whenever changing lanes or making turns. Vehicle been in dealer shop on several occasions, and some repairs were made on gear box, but problem still occurs. Passing on information concerning nhtsa investigation.

When driving at any speed and driving straight ahead the steering wheel will turn indifferent direction, andwill keep turning indifferent directions. That can cause an accident, and it is very unsafe to be driving.the dealer states there isn't anything they can do.

The vehicle is experiencing erratic steering problems.when changing lanes and or turning corners , the steering wheel will jump sideways .

Steering wheel sometimes jerks out of my hands as if i've hit a patch of ice. Also feel the truck bouncing while driving as if there is a bubble in the right front tire.took the truck to the dealer about 7 times with not resolution.had the truck checked at goodyear dealer 6 months after purchase. Goodyear said the the tires were defective. Said they were cupped or chopped. I paid $700 dollars to replace tires after dealer refused to do so, but still experience bouncing sensation at 60-70 mph.noticed both problems the day i bought the truck.( dot number: tire size: 245/75r16 )

Whenthe vehicle made aturn steering wheel would became loose, and the vehicle jerked into the next lane.steering wheelbecame stiff after it jerked. The problem only happened when aleft or right turn was made. The mechanic indicated that evo sensor was going out and needed to be replaced......

Vehicle wanders when speed exceeds 35 or more mph. Vehicle been in/out of dealer shop more then three times. Condition still unresolved. Vehicle put consumer at risks when used.

When driving at any speed steering wheel pulls to the left, andvehiclejerks severely.

While making a right turn at slowdown to moderate speeds, steering wheel severly pulls to the right.cause unknown.

The transmission shifted very hard and make a loud "clunking" noise when shifting into forward gears after about the first 100 miles.it was taken in twice while still under warranty and i was told there was nothing wrong with it.the third time i took it in it was getting extremely bad, it was now out of warranty, and i was told i needed a new transmission.the front end has been aligned twice within 15,000 miles and still pulls hard to the right.the abs system has failed periodically over a six month period of time - it was reported three times.the third time they finally discovered that the sensor module on the front hub was defective.

Vehicleis pulling to the right while making a right hand turn at 35 to 40 mph.

The first time i had a problem was right after i bought the suburban, it pulled to the right.the dealer could not find any problems, but they eventually aligned the tires ( which they said it was very unusual to have to do that for a brand new vehicle).over the months after the alignment, i did not notice any problems.i can not tell you exactly when my car started having problems.my vehicle would all of a sudden have a very loose feeling in the control of the steering.thinking it was just me, i didn't think much of it for awhile.i had tires put on my car and the steering felt different (good), i thought maybe it had something to with tires and it was fixed.eventually the steering started doing the same thing, the sudden loose steering.we live in a rural area 40 miles from our dealer and bythe time i realized the problem was not normal, and i would have to give my vehicle up for a few days, mycar was out of warranty (mileage)so i took it to an independent mechanic that i use, they drove it around on their errands for about two days and it finally did it for them.they were thinking they would have to replace the gear box, but they called gm to consult about the problem because they never had seen this problem and they told them about steering sensor problems.on 9/20/00, i gave them the ok to replace the sensor and i have not had any problems as of this date.i am reporting this to you because i am concerned for others that may have the same problem, it is a very scary feeling when the steering changes to aloose feeling and thinking if i were to react to an incident, i would probably overcorrect because of the problem steering.thank you for your time.

Michelin tires leak everytime the weather gets cold.

While on vacation had two tires blow out on i75 just south of atlanta.had to purchase new tires from the firestone dealer on the south side of atlanta.they said this tire was not in the recall list but it came apart just like the others. It was a very, very scary experiencethe tires that blew out were purchased at the firestone dealer on us41 in fort myers, fl. Which is my home.

I purchased this suburban used from valencia nissan with 23,000 miles on it.they stated the tires were new at that time.on the indicated date, i was towing a travel trailer on the freeway at 60mph, the truck started to rattle then the left rear tire exploded.i safely stopped on the shoulder.i had my wife, 4yr old & 2yr old in the vehicle with me.after inspecting the tire, the tread completely separated from the tire in the same fashion that the recalled firestone tires did.i wanted to know if this set of tires was also under recall.i would like if you could call me regarding this matter.thank you. While traveling less than 5 mph in a "rolling backup"the right rear tire on our suburban literally exploded.i pulled off the side of the road immediately, and found a very large hole in the sidewall of the tire.there were no foreign objects in the road, and no indication of any kind of puncture to the tire.the sidewall of the tire blew outward, and left a hole approximately 4" wide by 7 inches long.the vehicle was less than two months old, and had approxmately 1200 miles on it.i had the vehicle in for its first oil change 3 days earlier, and among other things had the tire pressure checked.i contacted a local firestone dealer about replacing the tire, and was told that they could not replace the tire with an exact match, since that particular line of tires (steeltex at) was a tire made exclusively for gm trucks as original equipment.i contacted the gm dealer (gilchrist chevrolet in tacoma wa) and they replaced the tire at no charge.with the recent revelations about firestone tire defects, i am concerned about the firestone tires on my suburban.the "steeltex at" series has not been mentioned in any of the news reports, but i know of one other person who has had similar problems with the firestone steeltex tires on his gm truck.( dot number: tire size: p265r16 )

While backing out of our driveway with our 32 foot travel trailer attached the vehicle hitch broke.i have approximately 45000 miles of towing the trailer on this hitch.it appears that the welds were not deep enough on the left side.i have replaced the hitch with the same part number at a chevrolet dealership.

Engine check light came on 1st then a various other probles began occuring as we tried to get our vehicle home.when we got it to the dealer's repair shop we were told that the #2 fuel injector had started leaking and filled the whole electrical system with gas. There is a major problem with gm and chevrolet truck transmissions.hard shifting is experienced followed by " enginelight on panel.a code 0f 1870 is reported when it is serviced.i have had the dealer look at this several times and there appears to be no way to fix it.i have heard of many people paying $3000 for rebuilt trtansmissions and the problem stil is not corrected.gm has been contacted but will not respond.

While driving on a flat, even road at about 45 mph,the steering resistance just disappeared for a few seconds.this was frightening because there was absolutely no control of the steering for those few seconds and i drifted a little into the other lane.my husband and i experienced this same problem intermittently over the next day and almost exclusively when turning to the right. We were test driving the car and brought the problem up to the chevy dealer on return.they would not fix it but agreed to lower the purchase price by the estimated repair cost.we had it fixed the next day at the same chevy place (i felt it was unsafe to drive in that condition).they replaced the speed sensor and charged us $260.the repair appears to have solved the problem.

There was recall issued june 19, 2003 for our vehicle 1997 chevrolet suburban, gm recall no. 03023 for the windshield wiper/washer.we were not notified of this recall and had our wipers fail on us during a trip on a highway that is known for its accidents.we immediately pulled over and eventually got them to work again.we took our vehicle to our mechanic that very same night.he informed us of the recall.when contacting chevrolet at 1-800-222-1020 we were first told that the previous owner already had the wipers fixed on this recall, that is impossible because we owned the vehicle when the notification of the recall was released.we were then put on hold for a long time then told that the recall is only valid if your vehicle had 70,000 or less miles. This recall was issued because of a potential visibility problem.how is mileage related to visibility?i understand that there is a age requirement for the corrective action and we fall into the range, out vehicle was 6 years at the recall date.how do i get chevrolet to correct the problem.your campaing id number is 03v159000.
