From: david b parkercomments:in a crash on 5/27/06 where another driver pulled out in front of me and i hit him at approximately 45 mph or slightly below the driver's side airbag in my 1996 chevy. Suburban 1500 lt.if this is a known problem, please add this to your database; if not you may want to investigate other such models.i do have photos of the aftermath of the crash but was not able to attach them here.

Other: airbag warning light illuminated.

During vehicle collision no deployment of air bag, resulting in injuries to chest, from hitting steering wheel.

Original battery leaked acid, replacement battery leaked as well.acid corroded airbag sensor and wiring, causing airbag system failure.

Seat belt failed/no deployment of airbag during collision, resulting in injuries

The engine is noisy and vibrates, battery has been replaced three times, brake lines and pump have been replaced, emergency brake cable corroded, and air bag warning light is on.

The battery leaked/sprayed acid onto the engine and right front side components of the suburban.the air bag sensor had to be replaced, but the rest of the components were just cleaned off (this included brake hydraulic cables and lines, brakes, air conditioning hoses, radiator, etc.).the dealer/manufacturer said they don't cover the battery because it is not made by them althought i think the company is owned by them.we had to buy a new battery and pay for all the damage to the car and still don't know what the long term affects of this corrosive acid will be.it left a huge orange puddle in our garage floor which we can't get rid of.we took video and pictures of the damage to the car, battery and garage.the cracked front transaxle casing was only diagnosed after they had replaced the seal on the front axle twice since it was always leaking fluid.the rear differential had the seal replaced 2 or 3 times but it still leaks.the fuel pumped failed on our car leaving us stranded.we were told that the truck needs to keep a 1/4 tank of gas at all times in the tank so that this does not happen.the air conditioner has never really worked well on this model, it appears that it is undersized to handle the thermal load.we also had to have the spot welds on the door jams filed because many sharp burrs existed which were a safety hazard.

While driving 55 mph, had a frontalimpact with a smaller vehicle onwhich driver's and passenger's airbags did not deploy, and did not protectoccupants in this crash.no prior problems with airbag system.dealerclaimed that because vehiclewas largeimpact did not triggerairbag sensor, and did not deployairbags unpon impact.please provide further information.

Driving at 20 -25 mph the vehicle had a frontal collision at a rear end of other vehicle which caused the passenger's side airbag to deploy, but the driver's side airbag didnot deploy, causing injuries to the occupant.

While traveling at 55 mph driverhit a deer, and there was no deployment of driver's side air bag.vehicle is being held at the body shop. Owner not sure if the truck would be totalled. Please provide any further information.

Airbag light comes on, indicating a problem with driver's airbag system.dealer says it's due to faulty wiring.please provide further information.

During frontal impact, the driver's side air bag did not deploy.

Abs brakes failed, vehicle lost control, resulting in a collision. No deployment of driver's air bag upon impact.

During a frontal impact accident at 40 mph, the driver's side air bag did not deploy. Dup 511639, posted on 03-nov-98.

Air bag did not deploy during impact.

Air bag sensor failed, causing warning light to come on.

The lock latch on the century room to grow car seat model #4331nvs 300 ste manufacturer date 1998-08-28c does not latch properly, causing child to be free while traveling or trapped at times.company contacted without satisfaction.

Vehicle came to a complete stop, instruments (light, power, etc.) all quit, waited fifteen minutes, vehicle restarted.

Battery lekaed acid onto the brakes, resulting in brake failure. Vehicle has been repaired.dealer was notified.

The battery has been replaced 3 times within the last three years, each time with a new battery. Three weeks ago, a new battery was put in the truck again. Also, alternator is not big enough for this truck, which kills the battery. The dealer has not been notified about this problem. Please provide any further information.

Battery failure resulting in positive terminal pulling out of battery and acid spilling on air conditioning and brake lines. Replaced batery and connections came loose and truck shutdown completely.this has happened on three occasions.the terminals have been cleaned each time and truck will run fine.initial failure resulted in batery acid spilling on inner fender and brake lines.problem was found before acid ate through brake lines and air conditioning lines.during other failures battery terminal has not pulled out of baterry but positive terminals have had corrosive build up causing truck to shut down completly.after pulling connections loose and cleaning then truck functions fine for a few months then it will happen again.this poses a seriuos condition due to lack of warning .

Battery failed. Yh

Acid leakages fromdelco battery post. This was the third time that this problem occurred.feel free to provide further details.

Post on battery broke off. Battery acid had leaked from the break. Transmission failed, fluid level had been check approximately 10 days prior to failure. Fluid level was fine.

Battery failed.

Original battery (delco) cracked and spilled battery acid on hoses and wiring.replacement battery (delco) failed in similar fashion after 65,000 miles.

Delco battery case cracked and leaked acid.original battery and replacement both failed in similar fashion.problem was reported earlier and i was contacted by nhtsa investigator.he asked if there had been any corrosion of brake lines or air bag wiring.i did not know.have now checked and found corrosion on a brake line and air bag wiring which runs directly under battery tray.

Major failures at 2 years a/c, batt, alternator, fuel pump & differential,

The initial symptom has been upon starting the engine the clock resets to 1:00 and the air conditioner lights glow on and off(but the a/c switch is off).the next symtom is while driving the engine will just die unexpectedly.the suburban has been taken to several dealers.the battery has been replaced 4 times since the vehicle was purchased in mid-1996.the battery has leaked so badly that parts under the area where the battery sits had to be replaced.besides what seems to be electrical problems, the brakes in the front have already been replaced 4 times.this last time the roters were replaced because the dealer said they were out of mfg. Specifications.brakes and battery repair are not under extended warranty.each trip to the dealer is more $500.00.the potential for a life ending accident is so great when these systems fail on a vehicle.why aren't these vehicles built with better reliability?the truck was picked up from the dealer on 9/11/2000.the electrical problems are still not fixed!(description of vehicle:chevrolet suburban, v8 vortec 454, 4x4, 3/4 ton).

Battery failed.

Ac delco battery is leaking acid. Due to a spillage, acid has eaten through right wheel braking sensor.

The most be some problem with electrical parts, its been happenig since new

Delco battery was cracked causing acid to leak down the wiring to the frame.nlm

First time at 30,000 miles, symptoms appeared to be defective starter or started solenoid- found that the battery was leaking at the positive terminal and corroded/ruined cable connecting to battery.dealer in north carolina [parks chevrolet, charlotte replace battery and cables, free]. Second time, at 50,000 miles, i checked battery and found leaking again - soaked cable connections in baking soda water solution and re-installed with new bolt.since that time, i have cleaned the cable connection at battery positive post with soda/water solution at approximnately 10,000 mile intervals.from talking to other owners, it appears that the batteries are the problem - leaking at the positive bolt/terminal connection.as a former mechanic and factory service rep, i have been able to avoid a serious threat to safety by frequent inspection and maintenance, but this is really a dangerous situation and may have frightening results unless some action is taken to correct

In february my car died while leaving a parking lot.i turned out to be acid corrosion on the battery.i have already had to have my positive battery cable replaced under extended warranty due to acid corrosion.even after cleaning the acid off i am still having problems and will have to replace the battery even though it says it is still good.i know of another suburban (95) also having the same problem.

Original battery leaked acid, replacement battery leaked as well.acid corroded airbag sensor and wiring, causing airbag system failure.

The original battery leaked and caused a power outage, causing the positive cables to eventually start corroding internally.the dealer replaced the defectivebattery under warranty.several months later the replaced battery caused the same problem, but this time it internally corrode the positive cables.i went to the dealership and explained to them that the battery leaked again and corroded the positive cables.they refused to replace the battery.so i had to buy a new battery and bought a new pair of positive cables and installed them myself.i filed a complaint with gm andthey did not do anything about it.i contacted ac delco to tell them that i felt that they had a battery problem and they never contacted me back.

The battery cables leak acid, .when the battery becomes corroded, there is no power to the vehicle.the dealer has told me that the battery cables are bad, which we have replaced, and the problem continues.we have had the batteries (replaced more than one) checked, and they are fine.we have had the posts replaced, and the problem gets worse.the latest, (im stranded right now) seems to be the worst yet.at first when this started happening, it was a couple of months apart, now its every week.also when it started the cables where really corroded before the engine quit.now they can be wiped off with a dry towel.also, the a/c has stopped working due to cracks in hoses. (from the acid)being as i live in texas, even if the truck is running i cant drive it in the summer, even if we fix the hoses it happens again.when i had the vehicle towed to the dealer the last time, they told me the battery was fine, but i needed to spend 400.00 to have the cables replaced again.how is this problem really corrected.talking to other people who had suburbans i have found that a number of them have had vehicle fires due to the acid problem!!!having children in the car, im terrified to drive my truck. (when it even starts)i cannot sell it to someone else and put them in danger.the fuel pump has failed.we were told that we have to keep a 1/4 tank of gas in the truck.well it is going out again and i keep it full!also, something to do w/ the abs booster being bad.well my brakes are failing again. (less than a year later)the pads are fine. The acid leaking has caused damage to our driveways, not to mention the kids and animals in the neighborhood getting into the acid on the ground.please send me any info that might help me.im am going to contact the dealer and talk to them again about the information the i have found, re: im not the only one this is happening to.

Consumer stated that whiledrivingvehicle cut off. Consumer tookvehicle to a chevrolet dealer/mechanic, and each time was told that vehicleneeded new battery cables.the battery cables werereplacedtwice, butvehicle kept doing the same thing.

Battery leaks and subsequent positive connector/cables rottening from acid prevent current flow to the starter and to the computer - so that the engine will not start. It is necessary to loosen the battery cables, and clean soak them in a mixture of soda and water, then rehook!my wife can no longer use the car, because she is unable make repairs of this nature, in the very good likelihood that the failure to crank will occur when she is driving.i have previously reported this, but did not report that i have just discovered that battery acid leaks havecaused severe rusting of the right front brake tubing directly under the battery connections. This presents a potentially serious safety matter.fyi, the car now has had3 delco 78 series battery in it - first two replaced because of leaking!!, and now the new 3rd one is leaking.william j fisher.

Dealer refused to warrant the cable, although the extended warranty clearly indicates that it was covered.

Pinion seal on rear diff. Leaked at 36k miles, fuel injectors clogged at 40k and inoperable oxygen sensor.battery leaked at side terminal (38k miles), corroded battery cables and shelf. Winsheild wipers do not go all the way down to the starting position when turned off.currently having problems with starting the vehicle.starter was checked and is o.k.probably electrical, due to leaking battery or a computer problem.

The alternator had burned out. Gave no power to battery. Could not start vehicle. Had alternator replaced twice by mechanic. Was informed that alternators arenot strong enough for vehicle. Replaced a lot of alternators in suburban vehicles.

Consumer has replacedbrakes 5 times;2 sets of rotors & replaced drums 1 time.dealersaid that vehicle was heavy, and it was going to go through brakes. They have tried to put different pads on, but nothing worked.pinion seal was leaking and the vehicle makes noise while turning.wipers malfunction due to wiper module failure.there is a whine in the front part of the engine due to alternator failure.

1996 chevrolet suburban, side mirror remote control in drivers door panel caught on fire.i tore out the panel and cut the wires to remove it before the truck caught completely on fire.

Fan switch located on the dashboard that controlled the air ventilation melted the wiring harness.dealership replaced the switch and the wiring harness twice.dealership indicated that thiswas a high demand part.

Vehicle caught on fire ondriver's side door due to an electrical short inwiring.vehicle was totaled.manufacturer has been notified. Please provide additional information.

Vehicle experienced continued stalling due to failure of the fuel injector pump and wiring harness.

Drove vehicle & made a stop. Returned to vehicle with children & started vehicle. Noticed smoke coming from under the hood. Retrieved children out of vehicle & left. Vehicle exploded. Fire dept. Arrived to put flames out. Gave no indication of cause of fire.

Upon exiting freeway i noticed a burning odor. Parked the surburban and lifted the hood and discovered the left front area of engine on fire. I extinguished the flame and the resulting damage exhibited spark plug wires 1 and 3 totally burnt to ash. Wire harness to air conditioning and engine temperature sensor insulation was burnt away. Oil filler neck is completly melted away as are the sparkplug wire mounting brackets. Plastic vaccuum hose for emmission device was also melted in half. Upper radiator hose is badly burnt. Suspect electrical wire harness problem with vehicle since the battery split open 1 year prior spilling acid all over brake lines and air conditioner plumbing.

1996 chevrolet suburban developed problems with the brakes, intake manifold, engine cooling, transmission, tires, fuel injectors, fuel consumption and wipers.*mrconsumer stated that the dealer did not do anything but take the battery cable off to reset the computer and the brakes were never looked at.

I have owned 2 1996-1997 chevrolet suburban and have had the intake manifold leak on both at about 85000 miles.i did a little local research and found that this is a very common problem for the vortec 5.7 engine.when i called the dealership about a coolant leak from the engine area, the service writer said this was most likely the intake manifold because they get that all the time.toay, i noticed a coolant puddle in my drive way and upon looking into it, my latest 1996 suburban with a vortec 5.7 is leaking at the intake manifold.this is a costly problem to the consumer.it costs approximately $500.00 to have this done.i now must make the decission to have it fixed at the dealer for $500 or to do it myself for about $150.00 and a day of headaches.

Low fluid light comes on whenever col start, replace pump in the cooling system along with leaking fittings.

Injector pump for engine failed.

The coolant nipple broke causing the coolant to leak.yh

Our ase mechanic states they have replaced ~35-40 similar chev suburban radiator failures in past 24 months in their shop (documentation on request).these have been associated with water pump failures, intake manifold leaks and occ. Head gasket failures when coolant has leaked over engine.among ase mechanics in our area this is a well-know, "lemon" design failure which will cost me $900 to repair.

Engine fan switch failed.

Fan motor failed.

Fan switch located on the dashboard that controlled the air ventilation melted the wiring harness.dealership replaced the switch and the wiring harness twice.dealership indicated that thiswas a high demand part.

I have replaced the intake manifold gasket twice now for my 1996 chevrolet suburban. Both times it has cost me over $650.00. Both mechanics told me that they see these at least twice a week on the 5.7 engines. They knew exactly what was wrong. They actually laughed when i asked them if it was set up as a recall item for this engine.

1996 suburban caught on fire during transport due to a mechanical failure.

Engine stops running with no warning. This can occur while idling, accelerating, cruise speed, any time of year, any weather condition. Sometimes it will restart by shifting to n and re-cycling ignition switch without having to stop or leave road. Sometimes, as is the present case, it will not restart. I have owned this vehicle since new. This has been an ongoing problem beginning at 80,000 mi. Manufacturer extended warranty to 120,000 miles, has continued beyond warranty period and is a source of safety concern. This has occurred on interstate highways, in the middle of busy (high speed intersections). Dealer performed numerous attempts to fix problem, but they continued. I have had this vehicle to the dealer more times than i can count. I have had assistance from other professional sources (after the warranty period was over and was convinced that dealer/mfg. Could not or would not fix the problem. I have replaced fuel injection pump 2 times minimum, have replaced pmd/fsd at least 5 times, replaced auxiliary/lift pump two times, have drained and cleaned fuel tank 2 times. Most recent injection pump replacement was in aug/september 05 (7000 miles ago). I have spent at least $5000 tryingto fix this problem. Engine stopped last monday and will not restart. Am surprised no complaint has been filed before now.

Consumer states that while driving at any rate of speed the vehicle will intermittently cut out or stall surge forward and then returns to normal speed. Dealer states that this occurs due the diesel injector pump.please give any further details

Recently we had the vehicle serviced at a independant service (l&l automotive), in the past the vehicle has been serviceda chevrolet dealership. L&l states on their invoice "found rear brake shoes did not match the drums, it appears that the incorrect rear differential was installed from the facotry, we put drums on that matched the rear shoes/axle".we have continually taken this vehicle to a authroized chevy dealer because we had problems with brakes. Our invoices indicate that at 8947 miles on 7/26/96 we first complained, at 13,829 miles on 9/30/96 burt replaced front brakes (warranty), at 13,829 miles on 9/30/96 burt replaced front brakes, at 20,462 miles on 12/31/96 burt resurfaced rear brake drums (did not detect or tell us of any problems with the drums) and suggested the front brakes needed to be replaced again soon, at 21,575 miles burt replaced front brakes (we paid), at 30,799 miles on 5/29/97 burt replaced front brakes. This is just a sample and shows the problems we attempted to correct with the braking while the vehicle was under warranty.chevrolet has denied us any responsibility because it is out of warranty, even if the vehicle was incorrect from the factory and even if their authorized dealer had 5 times to detect the problem while still under warranty.i feel that it is their responsibility and that the car is still unsafe. The drums/shoes/differential do not fit the vehicle that we bought. An increase safety problem is we have 2 disabled children, one is classified through the school district as "traumatic brain injury" (unrelated to an auto. Accident). We must have a vehicle that has the strength the carry and stop this 3/4 ton vehicle, which for 82,000 miles has been stopping mainly by front braking. November 2010, i went to stop, the brake pedal went to the floor. I was able to stop using the parking brake, but was very close to rear-ending a carload of people. I had the truck towed to a repair shop. The mechanic told me that the front brake line had rusted out because it was mounted at the factory to the front axle on this 4-wheel drive truck causing it to vibrate and collect debris on it leading to a premature failure due to rust.in december 2012, again when i went to stop from about 55 mph on the freeway, the brake pedal again went almost completely to the floor, but again i was able to stop before hitting another vehicle by using the parking brake and running up on the shoulder of the freeway. The mechanic told me that this time the rear brake line had rusted out at the "t - intersection" where the brake line runs from the front master cylinder to the rear axle and splits into 2 lines at the t intersection. The mechanic told me that this was a very common problem on these trucks as it was a bad design, because the t lays in a recessed holder attached to the rear axle, allowing dirt, salt and wetness to accumulate in this area and cause premature rust and failure of the brake lines.third, last week, while driving, i noticed a raw gas smell and stopped the vehicle. Again i had to have it towed as gas was pouring out of the fuel line by the gas filter on the driver's side rear wheel. This was towed to a different mechanic's repair shop who again showed me that the metal fuel line had rusted out due to its being mounted to the frame rail, causing salt, dirt and debris to accumulate there also. He warned me that these trucks frequently catch fire when these high pressure fuel injection lines rust out.he said he had seen 5 of these trucks burned in just the last 2 years at his small shop.please help. These trucks are inherently dangerously designed to fail.

While driving through the neighborhood at 35 mph, the posted speed, we lost brake control of the vehicle when the service brake was applied approaching an intersection with a stop sign. We were unable to stop the vehicle which entered the intersection and passed all of the way through it. The brake pedal was to the floor and not working properly. Fortunately for all there were no other vehicles ( or pedestrians) in this intersection as we would have certainly hit them. It appears the brake line(s) on the k2500 suburban have rusted through in an area that is difficult to see where they go through the frame and blew out at this critical moment. The dealer is unwilling to take any responsibility for the repair as the vehicle is out of factory warranty. When we purchased the vehicle they did not tell us the brakes could only be relied upon for the time the truck is under warranty. This could have been a serious, possibly deadly outcome since we tow a trailer with the truck on the highway. I understand this is actually a common occurrence with these chevrolet and gmc trucks. Why is there no recall given the potential deadly possibilities? toyota was in the news about their unexpected acceleration issue but we have heard nothing about this unexpected loss of braking issue?why is that? is not being able to stop not a problem for the nhtsa?

Brake drums failed.

I had to apolized to my wife for the last 3 years on blaming her driving on the brakes! since putting smaller drums to fit the shoes, i do not feel safe in driving this vehicle with my family and especialypulling our boat or horse trailer.

I contacted chevrolet's customer assistance center several time but did not receive any satisfaction.i contend that a critical safety component such as the break booster should not fail during the normal life of the vehicle.several complaints during the warranty period were made about the pedal being soft.i was told this breaks were ok.i kept the part and offered to send to chevrolet to determine if was defective.my contention is that if a part is defective it should be replaced regardless of the warranty.if it was not defective the part should be reengineered to provided a failure rate less than 10-6. Someone could have been injured if the speed had been greater.

On the three separate occasions, i felt vibrations that seemed like a loose wheel and immediately stopped my vehicle. On one occasion, the left rear tire tread separated from the steel and was half gone around the tire. On the two other occasions, i could feel the same vibration and when stopping, i could see the tread separation from the steel belt in the form of large bumps completely around the tires. I attribute my safely stopping to 35 years of trained professional driving and always being conscientious of any unusual vehicle sounds and actions. Each time the tires were replaced by the same firestone dealer. A prorated charge was made on each tire and the dealer denied any manufacturing problems with the tires and my tires were just flukes.i took the fourth tire off the vehicle and placed it inside as a spare tire with 26,000 miles on it, fearing it would too separate.had these incidents occurred when either my wife or daughters had been driving the suburban, i believe that their lives could have been endangered. If you wish examine the fourth original tire or any of the replacement tires, feel free to contact me.i believe that these 16-inch tires, due to my experience, are just as likely to fail as the 15-inch tires.( dot number: sp872kr03l tire size: lt24575r16 )

Saturday, 30 september, my wife and i began a trip, tucson to yuma, in a newly acquired '96 suburban 2500. Earlier that morning i had been reading some of the news that had been posted on the internet and had come across another in the never ending stories of the woes of firestone (tires). The (bad) news had spilled over from the ford applications to reference firestone's steeltex r4s and at model tires... That come as standard equipment on, of all things, the chevrolet suburban! i walked out to the garage and looked at the tires that were installed on the "new" '96 and found that the vehicle had like now r4s types installed on all four corners! "nah, it can't be"i said to myself. I had read further, on the internet, the response of firestone to the new allegations was firestone believed that the safety board/gurus were only beginning their investigation and that there was no indication that any real problems were associated with the r4s and at model tires. With renewed confidence in firestone (reinforced by their published statement) we started our trip to yuma. Seventeen (17) miles into the trip, travelling at 75 mph (which is legal speed limit in this neck of the woods), things got real exciting. The driver's side rear started to "thump"the tire came apart, and control became "dicey". We were in the leftmost lane of the interstate with automobiles to our right side and behind us. I got the suburban to slow enough, without using brakes, to enter the median safely and review "the damage". A highway patrolman (state trooper) pulled in along side to see if we were ok and offer some assistance. He seemed to think that we were lucky not to have really taken a tumble or rolled the vehicle. An average driver would have lost it. We returned to tucson and immediately replaced all five (5) firestone tires. (dot number: v611b1a378tiresize: lt24575r16)

The car came equipped with these tires. I have had 2 blowouts caused from tire separation; the first occurence was in 6/98 withapprox. 35k miles on the tire and the second in 8/00 with approx . 54 k miles on the tire. No damage to vehicle or occupents. I have 3 tires left that have 20 k miles of use. Since i tow a rv trailer, my concern is whether i should replace the remaining tires.
