This switch failed while parked, thank goodness.a burning odor became overwhelming while putting on seatbelts to drive away.it was night, so i could not tell for sure where it was coming from.my next instinct was to turn the car off in hopes of preventing further damage.upon investigation, the dome light switch was melted to the point that the switch, bezel and wiring harness connector were destroyed.i have received two recall notices on this vehicle for electrical problems, one for the brake light switch, and one for the wiper motor wiring harness connector.i am very concerned that the entire wiring system is suspect in this vehicle.with only 48,000 miles we now have three significant problems.obviously per my report, there were no injuries caused by the switch burning up.however, had my wife been driving the vehicle at the time that the switch melted, she very well may have ended up with a dash board fire on the road with 5 chilren.i am very interested in understanding the frequency of this particular incident with other suburbans as well as any other electrical system failures.as an engineer in the automotive industry, i know darn well that thet there is no such think as a one time occurrence on any type of failure and this vehicle is proving to be a loser when it comes to wiring and switches.sorry for being so long winded. *99v025000.
Vehicle was parked with the ignition off. After approximately 10 minutes, a fire started in the area of the battery preceded by thick white smoke. The fire spread to the plastic wheelwell guard and right front tire about two minutes after thesmoke was noticed. The front of the vehicle, dashboard, windshield, and front floor pan area was destroyed by fire.
While drivingcruise controlactivates unexpectedly, and while braking the engine iraces high. The rpms are high, and the front wheels are squealing, causing extended stopping distance. Occupant needs to turn off the vehicle in order to have the rpms return to normal.previously, had a ton of electrical problems.dealer cannot determine the problem, but said it may be electrical.please provide further information.
Dt: contact stated vehicle was parked indriveway the neighbor's dogs were barking, she looked out , and there were sparks coming out of vehicle. She woke up her husband. Delco battery failed at 22 months,despitehaving a 60 month warranty.

Problem: brake pedal goes to floor-no pressure, no braking. Near miss collisions. Master cylinder, abs computer, have been replaced, brakes have been replaced as requried---this vehicle has a definate brake history problem. Apparently, based on internet articles i've researched i'm not alone. I'm extremely concerned for the safety of my wife and 3 small children. We're basically afraid to drive this vehicle.! when the brakes go down to the floorboard without any pressure, there's obviously something wrong with the brake system---------even the guy at the car wash was scared!
Electrical system failure due to a eight gauge wire off the positive terminal of the battery had corroded into approximately six inches from the battery terminal.

While driving vehicle stalls/misfires on acceleration, and longer time to crank hot or cold. At times slight touch of accelerator and vehicle lurches forward.the vehicle cuts off at any speed, losing power steering and power brakes.this problem is extremely dangerous.consumer took vehicle to have it repaired as per recall 95i005,when vehicle was returned it was worse.consumer installed a vacuum pump which was needed but did not fix the problem.consumer took it back and was told a lift pump was needed and they guaranteed the problem would be fixed.it wasn't.now they can't duplicate the problem.*jg

The engine without warning quits/dies/shuts off thereby causing the lose of steering and braking. This vehicle has been in and out of authorized chevy dealr jim stutzman chevrolet in winchester virginia since october of 1999. Although they have had their mechanic test drive it and he has experianced the problem when they hook it up to the computer "it" says nothing is wrong. I have been told by them that i never should have bought a chevy diesel and "what do i want to do how much money do i want to spend and they will just start change out parts " i am in fear of my life every time i get behind the wheel. I spent $350 dollars just last week having a part changed that they "thought might be the problem " this did not fix the problem as it happened 2 hours after i left the dealership on my way home. This vehicle weighs almost 4000lbs. I havwe been very lucky so far. What will ahppen to me when i am on the highway with a tractor trailer behind me and it dies? or like the first time when i was on a curvey mountainous road and it died and i ended up in a field and had to by sod for the lady whose lawn i ended up in. What if her children had been playing in the yard or i was approching a schoolcrossing? how many people have been in wrecks and injuried or killed and they weren't lucky enought to survive the first incident? please help me reslove the manufactorers defect before it kills me or someone else. I am not able to trade it in or by a newone and i should not have to because of a defect like this . Thank you for your help.

Nhtsa recall 99v025000 and manufacturer's recall 98065 concerning defective brake light switch.received recall letter, but lost it.dealer will not do the recall repairsunless consumer has the letter.called the manufacturer, and they will not send out a duplicate letter.

My wife placed k2500 suburban in park in garage. Removed 9 month old daughter from car seat, opened front driver's door and stepped from truck. The truck suddenly made a loud noise and began backing out of level garage, dragging them to driveway. They got clear of truck and it went down steep driveway across alley and up nieghbor's steep driveway through brick trash structure and into neighbors house. At time of recovery engine was running with emergency brake approximately 1/3 of the way to the floor. It is unclear whether it jumped from park to reverse or was never fully in park to begin with, however there was a significant time between vehicle being placed in park and beginning or roll backwards. In addition, at time it began to roll, no one was in the truck as my wife was standing next to it, and was caught by the open driver's door. Her right leg was caught by driver's front tire after being knocked to the ground.

Seat belt retraction system does not work on driver seat, and occasionally fails on the passenger side.the part that fails is the return of the shoulder belt.leaving the shoulder belt loose and of little value.on the front passenger side, the shoulder harness sometimes fails to tighten up but then during the ride it will make a zipping sound and retract and tighten to a proper fit.as for the abs, they kick in at times when not needed, and it is difficult to tell, but seems as if the brakes do not grab as they might.example, we have some sandy areas on our gravel road, and if i touch the brakes the abs sometimes kicks in, and does not let up when i let off the brake.
The shoulder strap for the front passenger does not pull tight.

1994 chevrolet suburban drivers seat failed due to crack in frame structure.
I sat down on the drivers seat on 2/5/04 and it felt like the seat was loose.i looked underneath the seat and discovered the metal bracket near the left front bolt of the the seat had broken off and the seat was no longer attached to the frame. This is disturbing as this vehicle has never beed in an accident or had any unusal use andhas less than 83,000 miles.i am the original owner.

While driving nut welded onto frame of the seat brokeaway from the bolt. It made the seat tilt back while driving.
The driver's seat frame, where it is bolted to the seat track, fractured and broke loose at the left front bolt.the frame sheared off in a jagged piece, leaving the bolt and nut attached to the track and allowing the seat to suddenly tilt backwards.

When driving the seat will rock from the back to the front and only when short drivers are driving.the windshield wipers stopped working twice because windshield wiper motor failed.
Anti-lock brake system has "locked up" repeatedly since purchase (on average, approximately once every two weeks).we've explained the problem to the dealer's service department, but have been told that there's no problem."lock-up" occurs most frequently when, during light braking, the vehicle travels over a bump (e.g., rough pavement, manhole cover)."lock-up" also has occurred during medium to heavy braking on wet/slippery surfaces.the vehicle appears to "think" that the wheel is slipping and, instead of pulsing, just stops responding to the brake pedal for as much as 2-3 seconds.i read that the small gm suv's are being recalled for similar-sounding problems, but was disappointed to see that the investigation is still underway for suburbans and full-size pickup trucks.

Brake system releases after application in panic stop situations.from the number of other complaints of this nature i am very surprised that no recall has been ordered on this problem.this is a serious safety problem that could cause serious injuries.the dealers in the houston area say nothing is wrong with the brake system and it is functioning as designed.this is a poor excuse.i would rather have a non-abs brake system than the current system on the vehicle.please do something about this.
Brakes failed when tried to stop at traffic light.--- wiper would stop for no reason and sometime would ot start, dealer said the problem was the circuit boardthat was on a g.m. Recall list for 1994suburbans but our unit vin no was not included, i contacted g.m. On the phone and they also refused to repair, i purchase the replacepent board from the dealer and the wiper works ok, i beleive g.m. Owes me for the repair.
When driving on wet pavement at low speed and applying force to the brake pedal the vehicle will skid and the brakes will lock up,causing loss of power steering.

These 3 cases of an abs failure occurred on damp roads. Two cases involved the right front tires being over leaves on the road whenbrakes were applied. All the cases involved trying to stop at a stop sign. Normal pressure(not a panic stop) was applied tobrakes, and all 3 cases were at a speed of 5mph or less. When the abs system kicked in, the car basically would not stop within any reasonable distance. We have had problems with this abs system(kelsey-hayes) ever since we purchasedvehicle in 1994. The problem is that this system does not work!!!! if the abs ever kicks in, you are in trouble. We have had only 1 accident since 1994(caused by the abs), but have had numerous near-misses. I have even looked into disconnecting the abs, but there is siome interlocking of the abs to the transmission or other systems that prevent you from doing that. I have talked to the dealers, manufaturer, and the nthsa. The dealers and the manufacturers are not going to do anything about it because it would involve replacing the whole kelsey-hayes system not just a modification.

Vehicle was deemed unsafe and was taken to a mechanic.brakes were in good condition so the hydraulic brake system was bled to determine if this was the problem. Under panic stops, the brakes act like "antibrakes"not anti-lock brakes. My son and i both have identical 1994 suburbans and we both share the same problem of poor braking, when wet or under panic situations. My son had a accident with mine when the brakes wouldn't stop him in time to avoid a collision, resulting in major damage. I have spoken to numerous suburban owners, and they all say the same thing. The brakes are scary, especially with such heavy vehicle. I spoke to chevrolet and they told me they are aware of brake problems, but don't know how to fix it yet, that a national recall might come next year. I think something this drastic should have a priority to the public.

I have had similar instances in the past, without an incident occuring. The problem seems to be insufficient brake power to stop the vehicle adequately. When the brake pedal is depressed in an emergency condition, the abs system activates, but the stopping distance is very long. This abs reacts very different than any other i have experienced. The stopping power is actually very diminished with the abs activated than when it is not activated. Once the abs comes into play, the vehicle feels like it speeds up. I realize that the abs is supposed to keep the wheels from locking up and that one should hold a constant pressure on the brake pedal rather than pumping the brakes. In dry road conditions on i-5 northbound we noticed that traffic was stopping ahead of us and applied brakes. We had already slowed to approx 50mph before braking . The vehicle nose dipped as we slowed to stop, then the anti lock mech released the base brakes and we were thrown upright as we continued forward into the car ahead of us after a considerable distance during which time we were aware that we were not being slowed by the anti- lock system. Afteri purchased a replacement set of tires ( identical to original eqmt tires) i noted a vibrationwould develop above 63 mph.i took the car back to dealer ( a firestone store )... They re-balanced the tires...the vibration continued...a second trip to the dealer resulted in nothing- they said the problem must be in the vehicle even though i pointed out there was no vibration with the old tires...they refused to test drive the car. After driving the vehicle some 43,000 miles ( mostly staying around 60 mph) one tire blew out in the sidewall with a radial failure from the treadbelt to the bead.. A 'catastrophic' failure.no accident or damage to the vehicle resulted but the vibration went away as soon as the spare hit the road.the dealer adjusted at 50% cost of a new tire on a "road hazard" warranty even though the tire was obviously defective from new.now i am running on 3 remaining tires and now find a simular vibration develops at 70 mph.(tiresize: 245 75 r16)

Approximately 80% of the tread separated from the tire carcass.it remained attached to the tread which was still attched to the carcass and damaged the left rear fender and door (approximately $800 in damage + $125 cost of the tire, see later).the carcass blew out immediately.control of the vehicle was not lost. I sent the tire to firestone for analysis and possible coverage of my damage due to a product defect.their response was that the tire had been damaged by a road hazard and they were therefore not responsible for the damages.in any event, i don't believe that their tire should catastrophically fail but i didn't believe i would have much success fighting their decision.the tire itself was covered by a road hazard warrentee and was replaced free of charge.the tires were nearing the end of their service life but still had a depth of tread within legal requirements.i have since replaced all 4 tires with those of another manufacturer.i send you this information for use in your current analysis of problems with these size tires.ultimately, i would be satisfied with reinbursement fo the body repair on my vehicle.the tires needed to be replaced because of normal (and acceptable) wear. I contacted the dealer on 01-22-99 to evaluate this recurring problem and was informed of a product recall. They checked the vin, but my vehicle was excluded from the recall. I called gm customer service line, (michelle holden and renee johnson) was informed that this vehicle simply wasn't included in the recall since the recall was limited to specific models. The problem isn't specific models, it is a specific part number. The pulse module (part#12463017) is defective. This defective pulse module should be recalled instead of allowing gm to limit the recall to specific models of vehicles. The technician i spoke with informed me that s-10 models, various pickups as well as suburbans are having the same problem with wipers acting erratic. The current recall is limited to post 1994 models, and i personally know of another vehicle (1993 pickup) that had the same problem. I believe the faulty pulse module should be recalled across the board, which will cover more than those few vehicle models included in the recall. Thank you

Nhtsa campaign id #98v150001 covers this failure for suburban's manufactured shortly after my suburban was manufactured. The component that failed is the same as the one described in #98v150001. This situation nearly caused an accident and should be corrected by the manufacturer regardless of the date of manufacturer. It is a saftey hazzard that could lead to loss of life.

I have had two issues with this vehicle:1. Windsheild wiper intermittent failure.this started to happen after the warranty period expired.i was informed by a chevrolet dealer that the recall(s) issued that match this behavior exactly do not apply to my vehicle.i believe the recall should include my 1994 chev. Suburban c-1500 vehicle, as it clearly demonstrates this exact intermittent behavior.beyond inquiring recently with my local dealer, nothing has been done to correct this issue.2. Poor abs brake performance.this symptom has existed since the vehicle was new.i complained several times, but no problems were found at the time of complaints at the dealership.i noticed that there was a recall associated with this symptom, but i have not yet inquired with my local dealership to see if the issue can be corrected.i have had several "near misses" when having to stop suddenly and almost hitting the vehicle in front of me due to poor abs performance and increased stopping distance.
Windshield wipers would not come on when switch is turned on. The problem is intermittent. Sometimes would come on. This causes driver to have poor visibility in rain. Been to dealer & mechanic. Tested wipers & replaced the pulse module.

Windshield motor works intermittently.this was reported to urka chevrolet in ludington mi and they stated our 1994 suburban was not covered by the recall and told us to call chevrolet.same story with them.i was travelling from fort leavenworth, ks to custer mi during easter 2005 the wipers quit working while travelling along at approx. 65mph.no accident, but scary to pull over on highway at nite cause of lack of vision.

Windshield wiper has failed intermittently 1997 to present - i just found out that this is a known component problem and i have been needlessly endangering my family for the past two years! why wasn't this [xxx] thing recalled? they did recall vehicles manufactured two months later with the same faulty components!information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Recall number: 98v150001my 1994 chevy suburban is not in the vin numbers covered by the recall although it was made at same plant in same year as others covered.i had to pay for exact repair as listed in recall.dealer service tech. Told me that they, "have done at least 100 of these repairs on model years that are in the recall, but maybe 30 of those have actually been covered by the recall.the others have had to pay for the repair themselves just like you."it's not that the repair was overly expensive, but it seems that if there is a recall that covers five years of cars more than 30% of the repairs should be included in the covered vin numbers.i believe that the number of vehicles that should be covered by this recall should be greatly increased.*la

I have spoken with chevrolet and they do acknowledge this as a problem on some suburban's but my vin does not qualify for this fix.i believe these symptoms are the same as the recall that was issued in 1998'.campain #98043.

Windshield wiper/washer switch operates intermittently.
Windshield wipers work than stop. I wiggle wire connector to motor than they will work for a short period. If i am driving down the road, they will stop working and sometimes start working again. I found out that 1994 suburban 4x4 are not on the recall list for the card that has a faulty solder.i have also replaced my drivers side caliper 4 times since purchasing the vehicle in january 2003. I also replaced the brake hose on the drivers side. The calipers seemed to get stuck and would not release.
