I was involved in a front-impact motor-vehicle accident in my 2002 chevrolet suburban.i was traveling approximately 35 mph when the impact occurred.the entire front end of my vehicle was crushed and none of my airbags deployed.i suffered neck and back injury ("cervical strain" - whiplash) and injury to both knees (which hit the dash board under the steering wheel).my vehicle is "totaled", so no repair is possible to remedy the damage to my vehicle.we have a claim filed with chevrolet and are waiting to hear back from them.
2002 suburban just stops while driving, no warning no lights on the dash or nothing it just stops. At different speeds. Changed injectors fuel filter pump and still the same problem even changed the flex fuel sensor. Some one will die because of this in the future if they haven't done so yet. I have researched this on the internet and a large number of people are having the same problem. Maybe its a commuter problem or something else but it needs to be looked at soon. Thank you
Traveling on hwy 35 in dallas texas and message appeared on instrument cluster "reduced power mode". Vehicle speed dropped to 20 mph (posted speed was 70 mph). Had to have vehicle towed to dealership and a fix has not been determined. The dealer so far has charged me $900 and it did not fix it.this same problems been posted on gm forums, gm truck forums with these same results. There are hundreds or maybe thousands of complaints for this issue.it is very unsafe.
Have 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500 4wd 5.3 engine a/t. Was driving 45 mph when vehicle suddenly stalled out & lost all steering/brakes. 131,589 miles on odometer at time. Managed to coast vehicle onto shoulder, waited 2 minutes, started vehicle again, pulled out into busy trafficjust to make it 2 blocks before stall out again. Repeated this process several more times before i found a gas station. Suspecting water in gas, added 1 bottle of gas line anti-freeze. Drove rest of way home without incident. Replaced fuel filter, pcv valve, air filter, spark plugs, and cleaned throttle body just to have stall out the very next day. No codes are displayed in message center in dash board. Stalls out randomly without a pattern. Wait 1-2 minutes then will start again.

While driving on the highway, the engine just died. It does it on extremely hot days and after driving for long periods of time. There are no warnings for the engine cutting off and it is an extreme safety hazard when it suddenly loses power. It looks like this should be a safety recall issue as it is a common occurrence on this vehicle.
On two separate occasions, my family and i were coming home from two different trips.the first trip was to new orleans from south texas.on our way home, while driving on the expressway, our suburban suddenly turned off.we were driving about 70 mph.the driver immediately put the vehicle in neutral and started the vehicle again.it turned on.we pulled over to a resting area and opened the hood, but we were unable to determine what caused the malfunction.it happened once more when we got home.this trip was during the week of july 20th, 2015.this past weekend (march 12-14, 2016), we drove up to san antonio from south texas.while we were in san antonio on the expressway, the vehicle turned off again.again, the driver put the vehicle in neutral and turned on the vehicle again.we were able to safely pull over and check the vehicle.again, we were unable to determine what was causing the malfunction.i had researched this problem online and have read that this has happened to several people who own a 2002 chevrolet suburban.
Whether it's idling or driving shuts off i replaced the fuel pump and the wiring harnesses that come with the fuel pump and still no avail it's caused a lot of time off of work and a lot of headache i work for a reputable dealership i worked on vehicles for over 40 years
While traveling on busy street, our 2002 chevrolet suburban suddenly was without power.pressing on accelerator did nothing and vehicle completely stalled when brake was applied.this left us attempting to navigate from busy street with our three kids in the car with no power steering or brakes!we were 140 miles from home and when we attempted to drive back home, this problem occurred again.this time on busy four lane road with lots of traffic.the vehicle stalled out again leaving us on side of busy road at on ramp location.this was not first time that this has occurred.we have had 5 other incidences with this vehicle.gm is no help.they act like they have never had any reports of such problems, yet many can be found online.we had our vehicle towed to an independent repair center since the gm dealership repair shop was more interested in telling us that they couldn't fix it on that day but they did have a rental car service on lot.i hope that soon attention will be given to this obvious defect in this vehicle before someone is killed.but then again that is what it took for attention to be given to toyota problems.please take action for this matter before lives are lost!!!!
On multiple occasions my 2002 chevrolet suburban stalled while driving on the freeway.after several minutes the truck would restart.the chevy dealer said there was nothing they could do since they would not be able to duplicate the condition. It does not trigger a check engine signal. It usually happens after long periods of freeway driving with no warning.this is not a low fuel issue.i suspect it is a crank position sensor failing after researching the issue on the internet.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500. The contact stated that the vehicle would stall without warning when driving various speeds. The failure recurred over a span of several months until the check engine light illuminated and remained illuminated. The contact stated that he was able to restart the vehicle after each failure. The vehicle was not inspected or repaired. The vin was unknown. The failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage was 121,988.
Various incidents of vehicle dying while driving on highway when temperatures are high. Does not do it when cold. Has failed to start also. After waiting 10-20 minutes engine may start and continue without problem to destination. Have changed sensor without improvement of problem. Local garage has not been able to locate solution as it is impossible to get it into service when problem occurs. Many problems getting off theroad when incident occurs. Have had 4-5 occurrences and becoming more frequent.
2002 chevrolet suburban 1500 loses acceleration power on highway.vehicle does not respond to acceleration attempts.once brake is applied vehicle completely stalls and has no power steering or brakes.this has occurred in highway driving at 70 mph in heavy traffic areas.there is no consistency in occurrences.happened august 2007 , and dec. 2007, sept. 2009 and november 2009.check engine light does not come on.can not be diagnosed on computer.gm mechanics can not figure out problem unless it happens to them.gm refers us to dealership for diagnosing and repairs under these conditions.don't have the money to put in repairs that may or may not correct problem.have found many complaints on internet detailing this problem but gm denies any knowledge of this problem.noticed that 2001 chevy suburbans have had a recall of crankshaft position sensor and that symptoms are similar to my vehicle.this problem poses a tremendous life and death safety concern for me and my family especially when we are traveling in high traffic areas or in mountain areas.
While driving on the freeway my 2002 suburban with a 5.3l flex fuel equipped vehicle just would stall with out warning and cause me to lose all power steering and other item related to the engine running.i have to wait for the vehicle to cool down before being able to restart it.no code would show on the on board computer and after looking at other recalls it pointed to the crankshaft position sensor going bad.i am going to change it out in the morning.i have read others having this same issue in this year model and think chevy should do something about it.
#5 cylinder 1164 misfires. Collapsed lifter, broken rings. The dealership went on fishing expedition, charging me $271.82 for unnecessary work (new spark plug and wires). Went for second diagnoses, correctly diagnosed this time indicating the above. Mechanic contacted gmpp (extended warranty),told gmpp that the engine should be replaced. The mechanic was advised to tell me to return to dealership for service.
While driving at highway speeds with my 2002 chevrolet suburban ls with 45,000 miles on it, i encountered a complete engine failure. The vehicle would coast until i reached a speed of 30mph., i would place the vehicle in neutral and attempt to re-start the engine. After several attempts, the vehicle would re-start, accelerate to 70 mps. This would occur intermittent over and over through my two driving trip. The actual number of time the engine failed was 14. This caused a very serious situation, because without engine power, i had no power brakes, steering or the ability to maintain speed, which resulted in me locating the road shoulder immediately! i contacted the dealer i use regularly and they informed me this is the first time they have ever heard of this. However, after researching the internet i discovered through forums this is a problem that many people are experiencing. I contacted the local dealership at my destination at 1000 us highway 1ph: (772) 567-8371 , vero beach, fl 32960 made an appointment for monday july 14, 2008 at 8:30am. Again i was told by the service writer they have never heard of this problem. I also located a document called,"nhtsa defect investigation # pe06016 closed. I am the original owner of the 2002 vehicle and have not moved from 1997-2008. How do i get this resolved and at no cost to me? just maybe the dealership will fix the problem without any problems, however from my many past experiences with dealerships, the last is not the usual.please feel free to contact me to help assist me in fixing the vehicle and the cost terms if need. Thank you.mark deehl
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500 lt. While driving 35 mph the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was driven onto the side of the road. He waited a few minutes and was able to restart the vehicle. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were notified. The failure mileage was 114,346.
While driving suburban on a long trip over 2 hot days, engine quit without warning once each day after many hours of driving (5 people with luggage, no trailer).first day occurrence was after driving in city traffic with many stoplights but speed was about 60 mph at the time and quickly lost power and died.second day was at sustained 70+mph and quit suddenly.both times needed to pull over and turned off for a minute after failures and restarted on 2nd try and continued on for another 20+ miles before stopping for the day (first day) and stopping for dinner (2nd day).fuel in gas tank was half full on first day and 3/4 on second day.this vehicle exhibited same failure numerous times 2 years previously on hot day pulling trailer.
Known problems with a/c compressor on 2002 suburban/tahoe with rear a/c.defective system causes loud chatter in belt tensioner due to slugs of liquid refrigerant being pushed into the compressor.problems frequent enough for gm to have issued tsb #01139b but gm refuses to issue a recall on this obvious defect.literally thousands of complaints about this defect are documented on the internet.
Low dim headlight shut off when driving down the road, sometime it will come back on and it won't come on at all, but can hit the fuse box under hood it will come back on, now it don't work at all, have to ride with the bright light on.

My 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500 has began to stall unexpectedly.it stalls when fuel tank is low and when tank is full.lately, its been difficult to crank.i have a new battery, the alternator tested fine, i've had the fuel pump replaced twice and it still stalls.
I have a 2002 chevy suburban. The truck started shutting off at any speed leaving me without power steering or power brakes. I changed the fuel filter the next day but problem still occurs. Then car stalled on highway and would not start again. Car started about 2 hours later and then cut out a block down the road. Started the car another 3 hours later and car was able to make it the 5 miles home. Fuel pump was replaced about 50k miles ago. Stall is a dangerous situation with no steering and little braking issue. With all of the internet feedback, and the2000 and 2001 fuel issues with this model, chevy should do something about this.
2002 chevrolet surburban engine stalled while being driven at 70mph down freeway. Was able to getengine restarted while still rolling. No repair made yet, service technician said many possible causes and would be easier to diagnose if it would not start. Wife's 2000 model chev suburban had almost identical problem 01/21/2002.
While driving on the houston tollway at 65 mph, my 2002 suburban suddenly and without warning lost power and the engine shutdown. I managed to get the vehicle onto the shoulder without incident after attempting to restart the engine while trying to steer clear of traffic. The vehicle would not start and was towed to lone star chevrolet in houston, texas. The bill was 1045.10. They replaced the fuel module and the fuel filter and told me that there had been some problems with gm vehicles dating back to 1999 models on the same problem. Mine had only 70158 mi. I think gm should reimburse me for the cost of repair. I talked to a customer who had a similar problem on his 1999 gmc suburban and they filed a complaint with gm and was reimbursed for the repair. Fair is fair and i expect nothing less from them.
My 2002 chevy suburban has intermittent but increasingly more frequent and longer duration starting problems.my research tells me that it is exhibiting the exact same symptoms as the 2000 and 2001 suburban models that were under a 2005 fuel pump harness recall.after nearly 4 months of dealing with this problem, researching it, and trying to convince both my local mechanic and the dealership to replace the pump, my suburban finally failed to start at all today.tomorrow my local mechanic is going to replace the fuel pump and relay.i am angry to discover that the 2001 and 2000 models were under recall for this very same issue, but the 2002 models were not included in the recall and the dealership -- courtesy chevrolet in san diego -- despite 3 recent visits there with this problem, failed to mention this recall of those earlier year models.they failed to even recognize that this could be a problem with my suburban.they won't do anything unless a computer diagnosed code tells them what to do.my symptoms are the same and i'm realizing now how fortunate i am that this car did not die on me in the middle of one of the many interstate highways in san diego county.i'm also fortunate that my car did not catch on fire!i'm asking you to look into how many 2002 suburbans have the same fuel pump and fuel pump harness issues as the 2000 and 2001 models.the date listed below is the first day the car acted up.it has been ongoing progressively since then.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500.while driving 60 mph, the contact was informed of something hanging from underneath his vehicle.he pulled over and noticed that one of the gas tank brackets, used to support the gas tank underneath the vehicle, failed.the vehicle was no longer under warranty.the manufacturer advised him to take the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, but the contact refuses.the failure mileage was 160,000.
Some days my truck will not start some days it does for instanceit will start for a couple of days consecutively and then it wont start for 2-3 days after a couple of days of just sitting. I have replaced the battery, the alternator , starter , fuel pumpandi'm still experiencing the same problem.this happens all the time has been going on for the past couple years, lost my job because of non reliable transportation.
During normal operations under normal driving conditions the following occurred.loss of engine at speeds of 60+ mph after driving one hour. Engine restarted with in two minutes. Problem occurred multiple times with shorter run times between each attempt.over a three year time frame vehicle has required four fuel pumps all from different manufactures to eliminate the possibility of any compromised product batches.total consumer cost. $3000.
Driving on residential road and vehicle suddenly reduced speed to 10 mph. Message displayed "reduced power mode". No one knows how to diagnose. All repairs i have read on the internet forums are expensive and the problem eventually returns.this problem is intermittent and can occur at any time. The most concern is on the freeway where your vehicle is reduced to 10-20 mph and the speed limit is 70 mph.
While replacing the rusted brake lines on my suburban (see tracking number11066863), i noticed the fuel lines going to the fuel filter were also terribly rusted. It appears the rust emanates from the plastic clamp that secures the fuel line to the frame. The tube nut that goes into the filter appears to be frozen with rust. Salt and dirt are trapped in the plastic clamp and nut, which is impossible to wash out. The fuel lines on top of the fuel tank are likely to be rusted, too.

I was unable to have my 2002 suburban inspected. The parking brake band on the drivers side had to be replaced as well as the brake drum this december. My vehicle only has 92k miles. My father-in-law has the same year/make vehicle and he had to have his parking brake replaced, but on the passenger side. His vehicle only has 76k miles. Chevrolet has a service bulletin out that this model vehicle is prone to this problem, yet will not take responsibility for repairs or replacement.
Emergency brake does not work.has been bad since 36k miles and dealer refuses to touch because vehicle is out of warranty.fix is buying new cables with new emergency brake pedal; why new pedal? they obviously know that they have a problem and they don't want to take responsibility for it.why should i have to pay for their poor engineering?
This in reference to a closed nhtsa action # dp05009.after a parking brake failure that occurred on this 2002 chevy suburban with 54,000 miles on it, in november, i looked into similar situations with other suburban owners and of the 3 i found, 2 in south carolina, and one in indiana, all had similar parking brake problems.when i brought my vehicle to the dealer for repair, i was told there were no recalls or safety notices regarding this problem.after reviewing your nhtsa site, i see that this problem was addressed and closed but only applied to vehicle with manual transmissions, even though the problem was in automatic models too, which was apparently glossed over because of the percentage of roll away incidents.this problem is still out there, and chevy denies it.chevy needs to acknowledge this as a series wide problem and fix it on a recall basis.the insulting thing about this is the dealership acts like it is something new, and perhaps i was leaving the parking brake on all the time.it is not new, and i have never driven away with the parking brake on in my life.and we wonder why the american auto industry is failing to attract customers.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500. The contact stated that while the parking brake was engaged, the vehicle began to roll; the contact stated that the parking brake would not hold and could result in a crash. The brake was replaced once by the dealer but the failure continued. The contact referenced recall 05v161000 but the year, make and model was not included. The failure mileage was 90,171.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500. The contact stated that while attempting to park with the trailer attached to the vehicle, the brake pedal was depressed to the floorboard and the emergency brake also failed. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be diagnosed or repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 135,000...updated 10/19/11the consumer stated the problem was with the emergency brake only. The brake shoes for the emergency brake, drag and wear out completely, even if the emergency brake pedal is never used. Updated 10/21/11
Emergency brake wasn't working when i purchased the vehicle. I didn't know it at the time. I was told that there was a problem with the emergency brakes and that there may be a recall to fix the problem. I purchased it on 10-15-2005. The mileage was 64095. Mileage now is 70129. I would always use the brake with my grandkids in the vehicle so it wouldn't move. Now i found out that i never had one for some reason. Need it fixed if all possible.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500.when the contact first purchased the vehicle, he noticed that the parking brake would not hold.the vehicle continued to roll when the brake was engaged.he took the vehicle to the dealer and they tightened an unspecified component.the vehicle passed inspection, but the failure worsened afterwards.the dealer could not determine the cause of the failure.the issue occurred every time he attempted to apply the parking brake.the manufacturer was not notified.the current mileage was approximately 75,000 and failure mileage was approximately 65,000.
2002 suburban parking brake has failed for the second time at 77k mile. Now they have begun lock and have to be reset a couple times to get them to release. A loud squeal accompanies before it releases. Parking brake pedal is to the floor. Truck still has original disk brakes all around.
While parking a travel trailer into a steeply-sloped driveway after a 300-mile tow with the whole family aboard, noticed the brake pedal travel was uncommonly long. Following day, departed without the trailer for a short drive and again noticed a low pedal. Drove about three miles with extreme caution, and on arrival found brake fluid flowing from behind the driver's-side rocker panel. Slowly nursed the truck to the local dealer; during this drive the brake alarm light illuminated. No collision or injury in this case. Brake pipes were found to be all deeply corroded and breached; elected to replace all at a cost of $1130. Submitted as a case in ea11001: vehicle was purchased in nov 2001 in northern virginia, which is properly included in the salt belt with west virginia and dc/maryland, and has been in new jersey for the past four years.
Sat. 2/16/13 i started my 02 suburban up by turning the key through an open drivers side window. The car lurched forward about 6 inches. This has happened intermittently for years, but really noticed it this time because my arm get hit by steering wheel since i was outside vehicle. Normally when it happens i am seated in car and notice it seems to jump forward. It happens probably once every 100-150 starts. Any idea why and what i can do about it. Afraid someone may be in front of car someday and might get hurt if it lurched. Also could have done damage to my garage door if it had been down.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph, the vehicle failed to accelerate. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

I have a 2002 suburban that since i purchased it in 2002 i have been complaining about the transmission not shifting right. Every time i brought it in it would be in the dealership for less than a day and i would be told that everything is okay. Now my warranty is up and my transmission is broke. I have no reverse, and it does not want to down shift on any forward gear. I called a trans shop in my area and they stated that with chevy suburbans of my year (give and take 3years both ways) there is a very common problem with the seal in the trans that it wears too soon and trans oil leaks while driving down the road - the owner does not even notice it - because it gets blown away while driving. This to me seems like something that should be fixed by the manufacturer. The fact that when i called the trans shop (atomic transmissions) they new right away what happened.
Vehicle braking is intermittently affecting during low speed braking.the abs engages pulsing the brakes and significantly reducing the braking ability at low speeds.the brake lines, calipers, and pads have all been checked or replaced and the problem continues.the speed sensors on both from hubs have been replaced for possible malfunction and the problem continues.i have tried to consistently duplicate the problem on various grades, terrain, turning direction, and speed without success.the failure is intermittent and no warming exists prior to failure.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500. On several occasions, making left and right turns at low speeds, the contact experienced unwanted anti-lock brake system activation without warning. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact diagnosed the vehicle and stated that the wheel speed sensor mounting surface on the bearing needed to be cleaned. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000.
A was exiting rt 50 onto route 8, west bound ramp...in queenannes county maryland, the light changed suddenly from green to yellow and i realized i could not make the light.i hit the brakes hard and vehicle started to stop, and then the brake pedal just let go and went to the floor.found i had no power brakes, just the mechanical portion.i had parks tire and auto, in gransonville check it out today, thursday, may 16, 2013 the mechanic matt hrisko said the brake lines were all corroded and the right frontline sprung a leak due the corrosion. Moreover, he said all the lines were corroded and in danger of springing holes too.he also found a couple of the bleeder valves were corroded and/or leaking too. The ase mechanics there, eddie and matt, said they have been doing so many of these replacements that they went out and bought their own flaring kits...it is a big job...the fenders have to be removed and all, about 7 to 8 hours labor.just the line replacements would be upwards of $800.00. The calipers will have to be replaced then too, as the fittings to adjust/bleed the brakes are corroded, some are frozen shut and others leaking. That would add upwards of another $1200 to $1500.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).## vin passed ##
Pedal went to the floor without vehicle stopping. Had to use emergency brake.
When driving from work, my husband noticed the vehicle was slow to stop. When the vehicle finally arrived home, we noticed a sizable amount of brake fluid in the driveway. The trail led all the way to the garage. Since i cannot safely drive it to a mechanic for a formal assessment, my husband went under the vehicle myself and noticed it had excessive corrosion throughout the entire undercarriage. It is especially, extremely, and exaggeratedly severe with the brake lines. There is a small metal junction where the rear brake lines branch out to the respective left and right hub/caliper. The lines branching from this small union -that is just above the spare tire- are very wiry. He also noted that all of the lines from the front of the vehicle to the back, have a lot of corrosion on them.
I was driving down road approaching a stop sign and as i attempted to stop i applied brakes which without any warning went to floor and vehicle kept moving. I was lucky there were no other vehicles at stop sign and i was able to put the suburban in neutral and coast to stop. Vehicle had to be towed.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph, the anti lock brake activated without warning. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 86,000.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500. The contact stated that while reversing, the brakes failed to respond to deceleration attempts and the brake pedal was able to be fully depressed. Upon inspection, it was found there was a brake fluid leak. The vehicle was towed to a private mechanic where it was confirmed that the master cylinder brake lines had corroded, which caused the leak. The mechanic repaired the vehicle by replacing the master cylinder brake lines. The manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was 31,000 and the current mileage was 32,000.updated 02/26/13*ljthe consumer stated the dealer tech advised that the failure was prevalent in that area. Updated 03/1/2013
While backing out of our driveway, applied brake pedal, which went down slightly and then went all the way to the floor with vehicle not stopping.drove it into the cul-de-sac across the street, applied brakes at the stop sign, didn't stop, went into driveway and parked it.husband went underneath and notice large amount of leaking fluid.at no time did any indicator light come on.took it to goodyear (chevy dealer too far to safely drive) and they said massive corrosion on the brake line and catastrophic failure.i was incredibly lucky no neighbor kids were walking on the sidewalk as i was backing up.it is going to be a horrendous repair bill.
Wife was driving the truck with her mother, went to stop and the brake pedal went to the floor - limped the truck home - checked master cylinder, added fluid and when we pushed the pedal, fluid came pouring out the corroded rear brake line - while no one was hurt this time, it is easy to imagine how it could otherwise been a disaster.
Vehicle does not want to stop when traveling at low speeds. Parking is so hard to do, that i park at least 4 spaces from other vehicles whenever possible. It feels like the abs is kicking in when it shouldn't be. No abs light comes on when this occurs. When i am traveling slowly downhill, pulling into parking spaces, stopping at red lights/stop signs, etc. The brakes will not engage properly, it feels like the pedal is pushing back at me, the brakes make a strange growling sound, and the vehicle refuses to stop. I have to pump the brakes repeatedly, and sometimes it still will not stop, sometimes it will brake very suddenly. When picking up/dropping off my kids at school, i have had several incidents that were mere inches from becoming tragedies. I have no other vehicle to carry my 4 children in, or i would stop using the vehicle. I do not feel safe in it. There is a recall for this exact issue, however my vin is not part of it (per chevy customer service 1-800-222-1020). I have had the brake fluid checked often, i have had brake pads replaced as well, it made no difference. It has now become a regular occurrence. I am going to see if any shop nearby has dealt with this before. Please help.
Driving in close traffic (bumper to bumper) uphill on two lane bridge, brake pedal just went to the floor, and no brakes! frantically, i worked the emergency brake to the top of the bridge. Going down the bridge i coasted (no area to pull off), once off the bridge and safe to pull over i did so. Nothing appeared wrong, so i tried the brakes a number of times, and decided i could make the .5 mile rest of way home. Once there, i found fluid level down over half way. After searching found hard bake line had holds in it. After searching my brake lines, they appear to all be rusted badly. In all the vehicles i've owned, i've never had brake lines fail like this. In searching the web sites i find that chevy may have used inferior metals for their brake lines during this time frame. If this is true, why have they not taken care of correcting this issue?thanks, concerned.
No warning lights on the dash, but upon breaking at slow speed the pedal either pushes back or the brakes slow the vehicle at a frighteningly slow pace, all while the abs system is on as if sliding on ice, but it was and is dry pavement. This happens 95 -100% of every braking attempt. I have taken it to a local mechanic he couldn't figure out what to fix since the computer codes were bouncing all over the place. I see this is a problem after i have done research on the web. I pulled the main abs 60 fuse under the hood to turn off the system. This causes the break warning failure light to come on but i can at least stop the vehicle. This is a failure on a safety system (abs) that actually causes a serious safety issue...as each stop is a potential crash.
The brakes went out due to a corroded fitting, while backing a boat trailer/boat into the water. So no brakes, used emergency brake to stop. Vehicle was towed to a garage and the brake line fitting was repaired.on november 10, 2014 the brakes went out again while driving it. Again a corroded fitting. No accidents but resulted in vehicle being towed and now an expensive fix to replace all brake lines.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500. The contact stated that while trying to decelerate to a stop, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard abnormally. The contact moved off the roadway to further inspect the failure where he then noticed thatbrake fluid was leaking from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic for inspection where they stated that the brake line needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred a few months later. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 64,000.
The vehicle was being driven on a public road and when approaching a stop sign there were no brakes or pressure on the pedal. Vehicle was put in neutral and coasted to a stop after some evasive driving to avoid other vehicles. The brakes failed again due to corrosion of the fittings.this is the second time with this vehicle. Now replacing all break lines to avoid taking any chances.
Corroded and leaking brake lines. Abs activating during low speed braking.
My wife was driving our suburban to her job which is less than 2 miles from home.when she stepped on the brake after leaving our drive way, she thought she heard something that sounded like a woosh of air and noticed that she had to depress the brake pedal more than usual.on her way home from work, when she depressed the brake, the pedal went all the way down to the floor and the brake light came on the dashboard.she was able to bring it home safely without incident.i had the vehicle taken to a repair shop and they told me that the rear brake lines and calipers were corroded which i had to have repaired for a significant price.they told me that the front brake line and calipers will also need to be replaced shortly before those fail as they are corroded as well.
When i apply the brakes at low speed i feel a chattering like the anti-lock brakes are activated and the car won't stop until i let up and re-apply pressure to the pedal. I've come close to an accident more than once.
Complete brake failure.brake lines rusted out.please add my name to the nhtsa # ea11001 investigation.
All brake warning lights light up intermittently, i can make them go off sometimes by shutting down and restarting engine, but not always. Recall # 05v379000 covers same model year vehicles in the "salt belt" states, corrosion issue! my local dealer says there is no recall on this vehicle for brake sensor problems. Brakes still function normally even with all warning lights "on". I want this problem repaired under a safety recall! i can't allow anyone else in the family to drive this vehicle under these conditions. I am a mechanic, no one else in the family would know what to do if the brakes actually do fail while driving.
With out warning, upon approaching a stop sign my brake pedal went all the way to the floor.thank the lord i was able to stop by using my e brake. Other wise i was looking at a big tree. This was a horrifying experience.i then had to be towed to a shop where i was told my brake lines where completely rusted and needed to be replaced.mind you this 2002 suburban had at the time 42,000 miles. The total cost was just shy of $2,000.00. I also had this truck under coated when it was purchased new. To date 7-11-2014 i have had 3 brake jobs 3rd being today. I was also told by the mechanic i should get rid of the truck because the entire underneath is completely rusted out.
Driving at 40 mph, went to stop and the pedal went to the floor. Brake line under the truck blew out.all brake lines were very rusty.
My wife had driven the suburban like always and without any issues.at the end of the day she parked it and it sat until the next morning.i walked out to it and from the driver's side i saw a large puddle underneath my drivers side.when i turned on my truck the brake light was on and when i shifted into gear i noticed the brakes were out.i contacted gm and gave them the nhtsa action number (ea11001) but since they could not find anything in their system they cannot cover anything.i see that this issue is the second one opened and this one has been opened since jan 5, 2011.
While driving home, on a highway, i approached a traffic light that changed and i had to hit the brakes to stop. The brake pedal went to the floor. After getting it home i checked the brakes and they looked as thought they should work (note it was inspected in dec 2015 and passed). After more checking i found that the brake lines on the drivers side frame rail were rusted and had failed as that area was covered in brake fluid. I purchased my 2002 z71 suburban new that year and it has less than 66,000 miles on it now.
Driving down l street in omaha, nebraska approaching 96th street.brake pedal goes all the way to the floor and vehicle would not stop.i was able to pull to the side of the road just before light at 96th st on a slight hill which assisted vehicle stopping.the brake master cylinder was low.the car was towed to yeck's auto in bellevue, ne.had i been following other vehicles closely or approached a quick changing yellow light the vehicle would not have stopped.yeck's auto has since determined the brake lines failed.after internet investigation yields that gm has known about this defect.no warning lights, no indication of a problem.this vehicle needs to be recalled.the vehicle has been serviced at beardmore chevrolet in bellevue, ne at prescribed intervals since day 1.gm saying this is normal is frankly unacceptable.how many people have not been as lucky as i was on this day.
I was towing my boat and had to stop for ayellow, then red light. Pedal went to the floor and i could not stop, ran through the light. I made it through before traffic entered the intersection, so no accident. I drove slowly to a repair facility with safety flashers on. Mechanic says all the brake lines need to be replaced as they are badly rusted! repair cost is expected to be 800 dollars! we could have been seriously injured, had just come off the interstate at 70mph!
Passenger front brake is locking up while vehicle is in motion. Has caused numerous brake pad replacements and caliper and rotor replacement.has cause small fire.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500. The contact stated that while driving 20 mph she attempted to brake at an intersection and heard a cranking noise before the brakes failed. The vehicle was towed to a dealer who diagnose that there was rust damage on the brake lines. As a result, front break lines needed to be replaced. Three months later the rear brakes failed. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who stated that the rust damage was extensive. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 177,000 and the current mileage was 179,000. On 10-5-12 i was driving my 2002 chevy suburban in eaton rapids michigan.i went to apply the brakes and the pedal went all the way to the floor.i was able to coast and slow enough to get off the roadway and into a parking lot.i noted smoke coming from under the hood.i checked and noted the right front brake line had blown and sprayed brake fluid onto the engine.i noted fluid on the ground under the truck and the reservoir was low on fluid.there was no warning and no warning light on the in dash computer.the brakes went from working just fine to nothing!i had the vehicle serviced at andrews automotive in mason, mi.they advised that two of the lines had blown and the other two were so rusty that they could go at anytime and recommended they be replaced as well.i had them replace all the brake lines.after doing some research i found that this is a known problem.this is very scary because my wife and i traveled to south dakota from michigan over the july 4th holiday.1100 miles each way. If this would have happened hauling the motorcycle trailer, or the camper over the summer, a crash would have been inevitable.i hope chevy steps up and recalls the vehicles before someone is killed in one of these vehicles.if you own one, have the lines replaced immediately.i was very lucky.someone is bound not to be. The bill to replace the brake lines was $818.50.
Traveling downhill toward a t-intersection, applied brakes and pedal went to the floor.missed an approaching vehicle from the left by inches as i swung to the right, thru a stop sign.returned home, thinking a rubber brake line had failed.upon inspection, the steel brake pipe approximately ten inches in front of the right front caliper had split open due to corrosion.when i inspected the tubing prior to purchasing replacement parts, i discovered virtually all the steel brake lines were corroded to the point of failure, and in fact, i created another break in the same line as i attempted to loosen it from the plastic hold-down clamps under the left frame rail.accessing the brake lines as they are routed between body and frame proved almost impossible, and am currently awaiting a recovery vehicle to take the truck to my inspection mechanic for replacement of all brake fluid lines/hoses from the master cylinder to the ebcm to each wheel caliper.the factory service manual mandates a minimum of 3/4" between any parallel brake lines, presumably to prevent bridging with mud/debris which might abet corrosion.in many cases, my steel brake lines were within 1/4" of one another.some steel lines lay against steel frame rails with no clearance.this, however, would not account for the level of corrosion i discovered throughout the entire underbody of the truck.the only non-corroded portion of my brake system is the two lines immediately from the master cylinder downward to where they travel rearward along the left frame rail.everything else is at the point of failure.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph the abs light illuminated. As a result, the braking distances increased. The contact mentioned that the failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnose that the abs system needed to be replaced. The manufacture was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 125,000.
Complete brake failure.brake lines rusted out.please add my name to the nhtsa # ea11001 investigation.
At low speeds (<30 mph) abs activates which is leading to an increase in stopping distance.has potential for accidents in residential and city traffic.
2002 chevy suburban. Loss of brakes in vehicle.pedal could be pressed to floor board.dealer confirmed brake line corrosion, rupture and failure.h&l chevy, darien, ct.
1.normal operation 2. Abs cycling when inching to a stop,on hwy operation abs cycles even when braking and there are no adverse conditions. The problem is sporadic at best. As for consequences,it has not but could lead to accident. 3. Problem is still present.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500. While driving approximately 30 mph, the contact engaged the brake pedal and there was an extremely slow response. The vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road. The contact noticed brake fluid leaking from the vehicle under the driver side. The vehicle was driven to the contacts residence with extreme caution. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired for the failure. The failure mileage was 58,000.
Brakes line corroded, pedal to the floor.
On november 16th 2009 with no warning my 2002 chevrolet suburban experienced a sudden and total brake failure. The vehicle was traveling slowly and the driver was able to pull off the road , call for a tow truck and have the vehicle towed to a local repair shop. Direct tire of watertown (phone:617-923-1800) advised that the under body brake line was severely corroded in several places, had ruptured in one spot and was leaking in one other place. The vehicle was repaired by them. The receipt for the work done by is available.
My 2002 chevy suburban was serviced under nhtsa id 05v3379000 on 11/24/06. The problem is the vehicle will not stop between 5-10mph due to corrosion near abs sensor - under recall clean area and lube.since this is a corrosion issue it will recur many time in future.approx 4 years after recall service - i am having the exact symptoms described in recall.i think this recall should be recurring since corrosion is constantly occurring.
The anti lock braking system activates when coming to a stop on dry pavement. Typically 10 miles per hour and less. This happens almost 40% of the time when stopping. We almost ran in to the back of a parked vehicle. A recall was performed in january of 2007 but i am wondering if this was actually fixed or just replaced with the same parts that went bad.
My wife owns two gm suburbans, 2002 and 2004. Both experienced brake failure due to rotting brake lines within a week of each other. I have paid over $2,000.00 to have them both repaired. The 2002 failure sent me out into the street in front of my home unable to stop. The second failure of the 2004 occurred while on a cross country trip with most of my family in the car. This is the one that spurs my efforts to complain. I could lose it when considering what could have happened to my family due to these failures on two very expensive cars which i would never have expected to fail like this. I would like very much not to have this happen to anyone else and if i can get a refund for the costly repair that would be great. I have preserved the rotted brake lines. Please let me know if you need any further information.
2002 chevrolet suburban.while driving brakes where applied in a normal manner and driver felt brake pedal go to the floor and vehicle did not stop.after investigation found brake line ruptured near drivers side rear wheel.serious injury and damage where avoided only because of an empty highway at the time of occurrence.
I own a 2002 chevrolet suburban which when braking at low speeds the pedal drops near the floor and the abs causes it to kick back and pulsate this happens on an intermittent basis causing greatly increased stopping distances.these symptoms are consistent with a recall where they sprayed anti corrosion stuff on an abs speed sensor as a fix.this recall was performed on my vehicle 3 years ago at 40k miles now i am experiencing the same problem again @ 78k miles and gm says they are not obligated to perform it again or come up with a more permanent fix.
Brake failure due hole in corroded brake line during braking. First repair date oct 2010 est. Second failure 12/23/2011. In both failures brake pedal goes to floor and reduces ability to slow or stop vehicle. 2nd failure brake fluid spraying out on rear components of vehicle including exhaust. No brake warning light came on to warn of failure and reduction of braking power.i am the second owner of this suburban which i purchased used with 22k miles in march of 2003.
I had a nearmiss, i came very close to hitting my garage while applying the brakes.when pressing the brake pedal, it locked up completely and the car will not stopped. I had to apply over 100 pounds of pressure for about 40 feet before the vehicle came to a stop.
Non working emergency brake. (recently purchased vehicle used.) appears to be a very common problem on this class of vehicle by chevrolet and gmc. Repair is difficult, costly, and generally ineffective. Very dangerous. Not only will the e-brake typically not hold the vehicle from a stand-still. It was never designed to slow the vehicle while it is moving if the hydraulic system fails. Most drivers expect an e-brake to do both. Chevrolet should devise a fix and issue a recall.
Abs light on-dealer says $1500 to repair, he said this is a very common problem and should have been recalled a long time ago.i can't afford to repair it so am now driving a car the has no abs protection.
My brake lines are severely corroded. Ihave no choice but to replace them with stainless lines because i know they are not safe. It's a costly labor intensive repair .
Light brake pedal application causes pedal push back and minimal braking anti-lock engages at low speeds on secure pavement.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500. The contact stated the brakes are failing due to the anti-lock braking system. Whenever the brakes were applied the abs vibrated excessively causing the occupant to apply more pressureto the brakes in order to stop the vehicle. Nhtsa recall campaign id number: 05v379000, service brakes, hydraulic: anti-lock was related to the failure which was repaired by the dealer. The dealer removed the wheel speed sensor and thoroughly cleaned the sensor mounting surface on the wheel bearings, applied rust inhibitor and greased the mounting surface. The manufacturer advised her that since the recall repair was performed they are not obligated to repair it a second time. The failure mileage was 160,000.updated 07/21/11the consumer stated the recall was performed by the dealership in 2005 without her consent. There were no problems with the abs until 2011. The abs would engage when it was not necessary. The initial recall has not been fixed. Updated 07/29/11
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500. The contact stated that the anti-lock braking system would intermittently activate at less than 10 mph and when depressing the brakes. The brake pedal would vibrate abnormally with an increase in stopping distance and time. The dealer replaced the brakes yet the failure persisted. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 100,000.

My 2002 chevrolet suburban left me and my three children stranded on the side of the highway.after driving while my abs light came on, the car started pulling hard to the left and decelerated in speed.fortunately i was able to pull over to shoulder and get out. When i looked at my tire, i saw a small fire inside the tire.my car was towed 55 miles to nearest chevrolet dealer.i had my left front brake caliper, hub, rotor, brake hose, brake pads and resurfaced rotors.a new left front tire and $2,700 my car was able to be driven again.all the technicians that saw my car were amazed that i didn't lose the tire.they were amazed to see it hanging on by a thread.i understand that gm has several problems with their brake calipers and hub.i do not trust the right side so i am replacing that caliper as well.i do not want this to happen to anyone, especially a mom driving on a trip with her young children in the car.this is a default in he car and its brakes and i would like to have this investigated.my car had 85,500 at the time this occurred.
Abs electronic brake control module permanently failed resulting in loss of anti lock brakes.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500.while traveling at a low speed of 5mph on a dried pavement, the antilock brake engaged unexpectedly causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. The driver was forced to apply extreme pressure to the brake pedal in order to stop the vehicle. The failure was not diagnosed by a dealer; however, he is aware of the safety risk involved.nhtsa campaign id number: 07e106000, wheels:cap/cover/hub is related to the failure. The current and failure mileages were 112,000.

Follow up to see if an investigation has been opened regarding two vehicles with off center steering problems.*mr serial number #[xxx] and [xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
I had just pulled away from my home ( approximately going 5 mph) and my steering wheeled locked to the right and i side swiped 2 parked vehicles.i had both hands on the wheel, was seat belted, not on my cell phone nor was i texting...my full attention was on driving and i had no control over the steering for a few seconds.i checked the power steering fluid and belts for any signs of leaks or wear, but there were no obvious signs of a malfunction. My great concern is , will this happen again...why did it happen and if those people were getting into their cars...i most probably would have killed them!
Sudden loss of power steering and very heaving steering requiring great effort.i made a hard u-turn and then found the steering was extremely heavy.it took both hands and a lot of force to steer the car.i pulled over, popped hood, and saw nothing wrong.no dash malfunction lights were on.at repair, the steering pump shaft had sheared where it necks down from about 3/4" to 3/8" diameter.an internet search provides many instances of the same failure.the dealer replaced the pump with a different part number which does not have the variable effort steering feature.i very much don't like the resulting lack of road feel and am pursuing that problem with the dealer.this sudden steering pump failure is a definite safety related issue.
When the car is cold, the steering resists very strongly a turn to the right in the first 10-20 degrees of steering wheel turn to the right of straight. The strength of resistance is variable, depending on the speed of the vehicle.sitting still, there is a slight ?hitch? or nothing at all.as vehicle speed increases, the amount of resistance increases to a max at about 20-25 mph, where it takes an ?arm wrestle? force to move the steering to the right.it resists, fights back, then with a lot of muscle ? pops through this resistance and feels perfectly normal.the hard muscle pull to the right, and subsequent release makes the track of the car tend straight, and then jerk right.when the car has this malfunction, it requires the most physical power to pull the steering to the right the first time.successive turns to the right are easier and easier, until after about 4-5 cycles to the right, the steering is ?normal.?symptoms are gone within 1 mile of driving.this malfunction occurs usually when the vehicle is cold and has not been driven for several days.it also is more prevalent when the outside air temperature is cold.there are exceptions to both.it resisted turns to the right in the morning, and equally as much that evening returning home from work.it has shown up in the summer, but more often in the winter.it does not do it every day.i describe it as permanent, persistently intermittent.vehicle has been to the dealer three times, and left days and weeks at a time.at the last incident, the dealer replaced the steering position sensor.frequency of malfunction decreased, but the problem has not been resolved.the fact that the vehicle will not take normal steering commands is in itself hazardous.on slippery surfaces, the likelihood of loss of control is severe.
3rd failure of the intermedite steering shaft on the2002 chevrolet 1/2 ton suburban.
I purchased a new 2002 suburban. My intermediate steering shaft has been replaced/repaired at least 5 times since i drove it off the showroom floor. The intermediate steering shaft has begun to make noises again, indicating it is time for yet another service trip.
Paint on the roof and hood started to fade.
2000 chevy suburban rear glass hatch hinge on passengers side separated from the glass, i have read about 50+ of these from 2000-2005 models and gm says no one has complained. They want you to buy a new one for $800.00.
The passenger side of the lift glass separated and the glass wouldn't close. You had to manually line it up.apparently this is a big problem but gm wont do anything about it.the customer shouldn't have to pay over $800 to get this fixed.
The plastic hinge on the left side of the rear window glass on the suburban tailgate has separated where it was originally joined and the window is no longer attached to the vehicle on this side.in talking to one of the local dealership repair shops and a local auto glass company, i was told by both that this was a fairly common problem with suburbans.i think this is a potential safety issue as wind shear under the glass could rip the glass off my vehicle and create a problem for anyone behind me.given what i was told by the repair shops, has an investigation of this problem been considered or conducted and is there consideration of a recall for this defect?
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet suburban 1500.while the vehicle was parked in the driveway, the liftgate glass separated from the hinge.the contact stated that no wind was blowing at the time.the dealer stated that they would need to replace the entire liftgate with a different design.the purchase date was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 68,000.
I was driving on the highway when i heard a blast of air like a tornado or hurricane in my car.papers and things in my car started flying.when i stopped i discovered that the rear window had seperated itself from the frame at the top and was now open by an inch.the window is designed to open from the bottom with a latch.the two hinges at the top of the window had now also snapped broken from the window, leaving only the sides attached.this is a very large window and could have totally come off in traffic causing great harm to others.if the window had been open as it is also designed it would have blown off.i have since found that the collision repair place i used said he had another just like it the week before.in trying to replace the window with another used one he found that the adhesive was also starting to do the same, therefore it was necessary to replace it with a new one.in fixing the window the collision expert showed how easy it would be for the manufacturer to fix.it needs both sides of the hinges bolted.i do feel this should be addressed to save others harm.i have also saved all parts personally for any/all inspection.
I have a 2002 chevrolet suburban. This year i purchased a new travel trailer to be towed by the suburban. After hearing other stories about hitch failure i inspected mine and noticed the welds were cracking. This was after the second trip towing the trailer, and a good thing i checked before our next trip. Any way i called the dealer, even though our warranty has expired, and they said they knew nothing about it, and there was nothing for them to do about it. I ended up buying a new putnam hitch to replace the oem one. I think gm should reimburse me for replacing their faulty part.
Was pulling a travel trailer when the stock hitch receiver broke off causing me to lose control of my vehicle, causing a death, and multiple injuries to the whole family. Vehicle was totaled.
