I'm experiencing some issues with the airbag passenger side of my car which is in red on the instrument panel cluster.same description of the airbag recall made on the chevrolet sonic, but mine is not included. I did received a recall on the transmission, but i do believe that airbags is a life hazard for any driver. I called gmcustomer service, was told no recalls on mymodel, but not interest shown in finding out about those issues.to be honest there are a lot of things wrong with the car, but for now i'm interest in making sure my airbag is working and i'm more secure on the time of an accident.
I was involved in a crash in which i was on the highway, traffic was congested due to another accident and construction. Me and the vehicle ahead of me were at a complete stop as was everyone else, when i was rear ended pretty forcefully and to the point that after slamming harder on my breaks, my vehicle was still shoved into the truck in front of me. My complaint is that my airbag never even deployed. I was struck pretty hard as well as shoved into the vehicle in front of me that crunched my car at both ends. I find this a serious safety hazard that my airbags did not protect me from ifi would have hit the steering wheel.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that she crashed into the rear of a trailer twice and the front driver side air bag failed to deploy. In addition, the hood separated from the vehicle.the contact sustained injuries to the knee, left shoulder and back. The vehicle was towed to the dealer but was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure and the current mileage was 1,000.
Air bag light will not go off - air bags will not deploy (per the mechanic).took to our local dealership and was told the air bag module would not update and needed to be replaced at a cost of $750.00.how can a part that has never been used not be able to be updated without having to purchase a new one.i see all the recalls on this car / this model / this year regarding airbags.i think this is something that also needs to be addressed.
All ten (10) airbags failed to deploy when my car was struck by a driver attempting to pass me on the left as i was turning left. That driver was speeding, crossed the double-yellow line to pass, did not have insurance nor a driver's license. My driver's door took the initial impact strike and was deeply creased as the other car continued forward into mine, then the front left wheel was struck; the wheel and a rod connected flew off, my fender was obliterated, engine components were smashed, and my car spun around at least 200 degrees. The other driver was going so fast, it continued forward more than 150 feet before the driver could get his vehicle to stop after striking my car. The insurance company deemed my car a total loss. During the accident, my head violently struck the door frame and i was knocked unconscious. It is a miracle from god that i wasn't killed! my husband is livid to think i could have died... And to think that the 10 airbags were a big selling point for us when purchasing the vehicle. We thought we were getting a safe vehicle. We feel lied to and abused as there is nothing that can be done about this--so says an attorney--since i was not seriously injured nor killed. After my insurance company pays, i'll still owe about $4000 on my new-ish chevy sonic, and i am still required to pay the balance to ally (holding the loan for this gm car) for a product that didn't perform as it should have to keep me safe. How is this not a crime? isn't this robbery? gm should provide some kind of assistance since it advertised untrue statements about the vehicle. If we would have known the car was unsafe, we would not have bought it. There's too little justice in america these days. Gm, if you will make this right, i will place a full page advertisement in my newspaper telling everyone you took responsibility for your fault.
The passenger side airbag light was going back and forth from on to off for a few weeks, as well as the airbag service light on he dash, now the light stays on the dash and the the airbag stays in the off position.
I was in a tbone accident where the driver was going well over my speed. After the hit, my head hit the driver's side window. The impact sent me spinning across the road into a wooded area where my passengers side struck a tree. I was out for a little while (not sure how long). When i came to my senses medical was on scene and i had a major headache and my left knee was pretty sore. I went to the emergency room that day to be informed that i suffered head and back injuries. After getting the vehicle inspected i was told that my particular vehicles had more airbags than the standard vehicle and my airbags should have deployed.
Airbag problems: about 1yr ago,had car looked at because passenger seat was not sensing occupants, airbag readiness light flashed on and off for few wks about 2 mths ago, now it's continuously on,was told airbags will not deploy in accident if passenger seat airbag sensor not replaced.was also side swiped about 1yr ago going about 45 mph and no air bags deployed, have pics from accident but no police report filed
My wife and i w'er hit by a person that ran a red light the car was tottled out with major front end damage no air bags deployed at all when the side air bags should have deployed but didnt causing my whole side and head smashing into the side driver door
I was driving with traffic at correct speed down main road.when suddenly a lady that did not have the right away pulled out into on coming traffic. She hit the side of my car on the passenger side in the area of my front wheel.the impact was so hard that my car was pushed across turning lane in middle, across a lane of oncoming traffic and part of car was in the emergency lane when it finally came to a stop.since she was turning the opposite direction of traffic on her side of the street when she struck me her svc went from my front wheel down almost the entire length of my car. My concern that during this entire accident and my 2012 being totaled over $12,000 worth of damage and i was hurt, not one single airbag out of the 10 in my 2012 sonic deployed.
Engine is running rough with no check engine light. Also air bag light is on with no collisions for it to appear.
Hasburning smell of anti freeze and wires melting. Air bags don't work on front passenger side.
Pulling out from a stop sign the vehicle was struck driver's side from left onto front bumper/front fender area by an oncoming vehicle. Vehicle that struck sonic traveling 50+ mph impacted entire front of vehicle from left side damaging fenders, hood, bumper(no light casings or bulbs broken), moved radiator. None of the driver's front, side, or head airbags deployed.no airbags deployed at all. Car was determined to be a total loss by insurance company. I requested a detailed listing of their findings and none was given to me. The car was taken quickly not allowing me to investigate the airbag failure. Reasons for totaling it. I feel there was an issue with this vehicle and i have lost thousands of dollars that i will have to make up to replace the vehicle which i purchased only 54 weeks prior.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While operating the vehicle, the air bag sensor light would illuminate. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the failure was due to an electronic interference which was caused by a cell phone in the vehicle. In addition, the contact indicated that the front passenger seat air bag "off" light would illuminate when a passenger was occupying the seat. The cause of the failure was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 68,000.

Air bag light on dashboard came on, intermittently at first, now permanently.there are three (3) air bag related recalls for 2012 chevrolet sonics which detail the same symptoms.nearest chevrolet dealer said this sonic is not part of any of those recalls but the problem seems to be the same.is there any recourse to have the car checked at no cost to owner?thank you.
I was going down denton road and hit a deer going 55 mph. The front of my car was damaged really bad almost $5,000.00 of damage. I have two slipped disk in my backbecause of the incident. My airbags did not deploy

***takata recall***was involved in a car accident other car ran a stop sign & i tbone the other car @ about 25 mph & the air bags didnt deployed
I was driving and turning left into a plaza parking lot when another vehicle hit mine very hard as they were going really fast. They hit the front end of my vehicle completely damaging the grill, front bumper and all of the supports for them. Even though my car took a hard impact by another vehicle, the driver's side airbag did not deploy. I, as well as the cops that were on duty, were very concerned by this fact.

The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was informed that the vehicle was operating as designed. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 27,000.
The contact owned a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While reversing from a driveway and pulled forward at than 2 to 3 mph and hit an object, the air bagsdeployed when vehicle was still and consumer was injured. The failure impacted the contact's mouth, chin, and arms, and caused minor bruising to the body. Medical treatment was required. A dealer had not diagnosed the cause of the air bag deployment. The contact indicated that the deployment produced an odor and substance from the air bags. The insurance company towed the vehicle to a tow yard and declared it destroyed. The manufacturer indicated that there was no fault with the system concerning the edr box. The vehicle was not included in an air bag recall. The failure mileage was not available.
The air bag warning light stays on.started in june 2016, took it to chevrolet dealership that i purchased my car from.they ran a computer diagnostic on the car and said that the sensor for the air bags needed to be replaced at about a cost of $500.since i did not have the money to pay for it, they make it so the warning light was off and said that because of the bad sensor, the air bags may not deploy in an accident.the warning light had come on again.since isnot a normal "wear and tear" part on the vehicle, i feel i should not have to pay to have the issue fixed.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that the front passenger side airbag would not identify that a passenger was sitting in the seat. The contact also stated that the windshield wiper obstructed the field of vision while driving. The failure mileage was 5 and the current mileage was 2,000.the vin was unavailable.
After purchasing my chevy sonic 2012, i went to get my first oil change 3 months later. And the engine light came on. I have gone back multiple times, and have been told that it was the gas cap which by the way had a recall on it. The light came back on a week later. Took it back they said that the one they replaced it with had a bad seal. They ordered the part replaced the cap. Drove for another two weeks and the engine light came back on. Took it back, this time they told me that the car needed a thermostat replacement done the light came back on again. Took it back this time, i was told that it was a air vent tube that was connected to the engine, which by the way is not covered under my power train, did that and yet again the light is back on. Now my radio goes on and off when it wants to. When i get up to go to work my battery is dead. They have also replaced the drivers air bag for some sort of recall. The windshield wipers was replaced as it also had a recall. I really want to trade this car in i am literary scared to drive it. Scared driver...........

Vehicle was struck on driver side by another car that failed to stop at a four way stop.the impact was mostly on the driver door.the airbag failed to deploy.
My 2012 chevrolet sonic was involved in an automobile accident resulting in injury to me because my airbags did not deploy. There were several recall campaigns on the vehicle that did not come up under my vin.campaign id 12v52200, campaign id 13v023000, campaign id14v315000, campaign id 14v317000 campaign id 11v599000, campaign id, 12v408000. I collided with a vehicle that had blew a stop sign as i proceeded through the intersection. My vehicle t-bone the other vehicle. My air bags did not deploy the other vehicles air bags did. My car has been service at modern chevrolet university parkwayin winston salem nc since purchasing the vehicle in nov. 2012 from that dealership. The only recalls the dealership or gm has notified me about were only gm campaignid 12172replace swaybar links and gm campaign id12176.vehicle was a total loss
On 1/31/2016 a vehicle pulled out in front of me. The first and biggest issue was the airbag neverwent off and the seat belt tensioners did not lock the belts either. I went forward and hit my head on the steering wheel rendering me unconscious!!! almost the whole front end had to be replaced e.g.: grill and front panel, left and right front quarter panels, radiator, both wheel wells, suspension on both sides and everything that goes with those plus a whole lot of other things like the radiator, coolant and washer tanks etc. Etc.... This was a full-frontal wreck and not a single airbag went off!!! secondly are the abs and traction control. The roads were a little slick so i had the tc on. When i hit my brakes all they did, have done since i bought the car, and continue to do to this day, is immediately lock up! i had zero control of my car. This car has, by far, the worst abs system i have ever used. The tc is complete [xxx], too!!! thirdly, every time i start the car the engine seems to misfire or something! it rattles and shakes the whole car, hard!!! after a few seconds it seems to find it's groove and idles normally. I have brought the car in to the local chevy dealership where i purchased the car to address these problems. All they tell me is they are design and/or manufacturing flaws. They said i can pay to fix these issues with my own money or wait and see if the issues become recalls. Which, according to my research, have not yet. To me, these are some pretty big safety issues the manufacturer should be addressing!!! and why aren't they????? i have photos of the accident, but can't seem to find them anywhere. I'll come back if i find them.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the battery warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact attempted to restart the vehicle however, the vehicle failed to restart. The contact purchased a new battery however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where the starter was replaced. Despite the repair, the failure persisted. The vehicle remained in the possession of the mechanic. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was unknown.
Attempted to start vehicle with key in ignition and also using the factory installed wireless remote starter while car was stationary however the car would not start initially.after another attempt or two the car did start. Also, on occasion after car does finally start, it immediately turns back off.had car battery tested which that was not the issue.took the vehicle to local mechanic and he found nothing wrong however while the car was sitting idle with the key in the ignition and turned off with no human interaction, the car attempted to start itself 3 different occasions.he recommended taking car to the chevy dealership and having them reprogram and inspect the remote starter connection/programming.now the check engine light is on as a notification and the issue continues after mutiple days of repeat failed attempts to start whether from actual key or wireless remote start attempts. Whether vehicle was left inside garage or outside the issue is still the same, regardless of temperature.
First of all the windshield wiper line keeps popping ofmy car not allowing me to use my windshield wiper fluid so the tank is always empty. Second while driving my car radio flickers on and off and sometimes completely goes black not only that my car speedometer is electrical and after 30 min of driving says im going 20/34/whatever mph it wants to read when im really going the hwy speed limit and i have often had to mess with the wires that run to my battery to turn my car back on since its the wires(electrical work and not the battery) my battery has been tested many times. Finally third the little shift button on my car keeps sticking and wont allow for my car to properly shift causing my car to over rev and not want to drive.im now at 115,000 miles and every time i go to a dealership they say there is nothing wrong with my car when i know there is since i have been the one driving it and then they just give it back to me which still costs me money with no solution my cars state has just been getting worse and worse and due to limited income i cant afford to get a new one at this time otherwise i would have already traded this chevy pos in. I also called chevrolet's corporate office where the lady gave me a case number and never called me back like she was supposed to. While on the phone with her she told me that there was nothing she could do for my car since my car wasn't a recall but i find it odd that my car was made on february 28, 2012 which falls between two major recalls with problems similar to what my car has especially since one is the windshield wiper recall. So i believe that the chevy corporation as a whole doesn't want to take responsibility for their faulty car that they have made and when you take it to a chevy dealership they will continue to tell you nothing is wrong so that they just take your money and not fix your car. Unsafe&immoral.
We do constantly are replacing parts we replaced the window regulator and not even a few months we ha ft to replace again the cooling lines are constantly going out thermostat has been replaced twice now within 2 yrs the seat warmers no longer work been like that the key gets stuck in the ignition had to replace hoses twice constant grinding sounds and no body can figure out why the car is a toy car everything breaks down and not just once
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, a chime sounded with the illumination of the engine oil pressure warning indicator. The failure also recurred upon starting the ignition. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for diagnosis. The approximate failure mileage was 44,500.
Car will start by itself after key is partially inserted into ignition and car will try to start over and over if left in ignition when turning off. Took to dealer they blamed on aftermarket radio. However, i am pretty sure has done almost from the point purchase. Disconnected radio stuff and still does same thing. Car is stationary in park. No safety issue other than what is stated.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle would suddenly shut off. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the battery connection was faulty. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 13,500.updated 10/14/14*lj updated 3/31/2015
Checked car while stationed, when running always needs more cooling maybe electrical burnout of a part that connects to the radiator fan. When put the diagnose code, none is given, and temperature goes up to 225, its a hazard if a person does not know that fan is not working, putting refrigerant all the time. Read that there is a new re-design cooling fan assembly.
The battery go's dead when not started for more then2 days.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic.the contact stated while making a turn at approximately 10 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The failure caused the contact to crash into a telephone pole.there were no injuries.a police report was not filed.the vehicle was not destroyed.the vehicle was not taken to a dealer.the manufacturer was not notified of the failure.the approximate failure mileage was 8,500.
Vehicle was parked on christmas eve 2018 and drained battery. Radio would turn off but turn back on it's self. Causes battery replacement. To to gm they took fuse 15 out now have no speakers onstar radio incoming calls crash response
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that after the vehicle was parked and the keys removed from the ignition, the vehicle attempted to restart independently and the check engine light illuminated. The failure recurred once. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the issue. The failure mileage was unknown. The vin was not available.
The vehicle's electrical system is malfunctioning, causing the speedometer display not to show up when the car turns on. It's also caused the vehicle to rev up and down while the car is idle.
Radio randomly turns on when car is shut off. Last night it turned on 13 times. It activates the full electrical system in the car. Won't shut off unless car is started and xm radio is tuned to fm and shut off. Then if your lucky it may stay off. I have been reporting this to the dealership in vermont and chevrolet for 8 months. They tell me it is not an issue. They tested radio said it works fine. It is worse when cold out. Radio randomly turns on. Will not shut off.
Radio is not working.therefore, i am unable to hear any alarms (door, blinker).i am also unable to use hand free calling or on star. Also, the car will randomly attempt to start if the key is left in the ignition.
I purchased my sonic in april of this year. I was initially wowed by the avg mpg i was attaining based on the avg reported by the car's computer. After a few fill ups i realized i was adding more gas than the mpg would indicate. Since 6/21 i began recording the difference reported by the computer at each fill up & my manual calculations. The difference thru 10/17 averaged 5.6mpg (a low of 2.3 & a high of 8.4 mpg) always higher. I took it to the dealer & was told there was nothing they could do & that the svc mgr's cadillac had the same problem. In fact, i was told by him that the computer's figure was the "mpg the car was getting at the moment, not the avg since last fill up. I've called chevrolet, told numerous people about the problem. I was promised callbacks & have never gotten them.
Was driving and smelt something burning and thought someone was burning something and i drove thru the smoke and so i kept driving and a mile down the road i kept smelling something burning so i pulled over and looked around in my car then got out and checked under the hood and nothing so i went ahead and drove home then looked around again and didn't find anything so i just went inside then the next day after it rained i seen that both my fog lights had moisture in them and when i got down and looked both my fog lights are all burnt and melted inside, i guess it got so hot it melted the light housing and all that.. It got so hot its black inside my fog lights and u can see where it got hot and the plasted melted and ran down to the bottom on the inside of my fogs.
The shifter button/knob always gets stuck. This vehicle has an automatic transmission so it wasn't included in the prior recall regarding the shifter. The car radio turns on by itself after i have removed by car key and locked the doors. This has caused the battery to drain and now it needs to be replaced. Chevy dealer said that replacing the shifter "may" correct the issue with the radio. I would like to know why the shifter needs to be replaced after only 2 years of use. I have had much older cars with far less issues and never needed to have a shifter replaced. It appears to be a defect that they have not recalled yet.
After manually turning off the radio, turning off the car, removing the key from the ignition, exiting the car, locking and arming the car's alarm, the radio will turn itself back on.in some cases it has done this before we have even walked 20 feet from the car, in other cases it happens up to 2 hours after exiting (and locking) the car.it happens more than 75% of the time.shortly after the first time we observed the symptom, the check engine light came on and stayed on, but the dealership claimed it was no longer on after i dropped the car off (and it was definitely on when i exited the still running car for them to drive inside) and that there are no error codes in the history. They claim they cannot reproduce the radio issue.
1.took car in to dealership in aug for check engine light on and coolant is low, car overheats.car was in shop for almost 2 weeks (p/u sept 5th).they repl. Radiator, thermostat, sept 10 car stalls atmajor stop light and again at a stop sign.engine starts making a loud noise and runs rough.keeps stalling at idle.take car back to dealer next day sept 11.they have the car for 3 weeks.p/u oct 7th after they repl the engine and some bolts.sales agent assures me that there will be no more problems its fixed.5 mins on the fwy at 70mph in fast lane at lunch hour car just turns off almost had a major accident trying to get over four lanes.stops completely in the middle of slow lane by on-ramp almost was hit twice started the key and it turned on got off fwy and took directly back to dealer who called me three days later and stated that a connector was bad and thats why it turned off and they ordered the part and that should take care of the problem p/u car in three days.sales agent called back day i was to p/u and said they were still working on it and i told him i want to talk with a supervisor i will not drive the car off lot, come to find out that day on the fwy that it had never been test driven. Contacting business bureau and attorney at this point.
With the key inside the ignition turned to the off position the car tries to crank itself but won't actually start or stay running. My lights, radio etc have turned themselves on and off for no reason. The car has never tried to crank while driving but the radio while driving will shut off completely. No radio lights won't display time or anything. Now i am to the point where i have replaced the battery and the problem was resolved, for a couple of weeks now i'm back to the same problem. Unwanted cranking of the starter. The key dinging while placed inside the ignition is obsolete unless i wiggle the key around. Sounds like a faulty ignition switch. Car has been stationary and in park while trying to crank itself. Never in neutral or moving. Car is a 2012 chevy sonic. 1.8l ecotech motor.
My vehicle has been a nightmare. In january i visited the dealership because my heater was not working. At that time i was told i would need to replace my battery soon that it had some leaking acid. Three weeks later i replace the battery. At that time the dealership installed a new battery and sent me on my way. Ive spent thousands since then repairing what the dealership described as a electrical nightmare. I also have told the dealership several times that there are transmission problems with my vehicle. I insisted they drive with me and although the transmission issues have been acknowledged, the dealership has been busy repairing the electrical damage of the battery, the have never touched my transmission. I still have transmission problems. My car hesitates and doesn't accelerate causing me to almost wreck several times. I also have had several ignition problems with my vehicle. One occasion my vehicle would not turn off. The key was in the off position but the car remained running for several hours until the battery was dead. Anther occasion i was pumping gas and the vehicle was turned off. My two young children were in the vehicle and the car started cranking itself. It attempted to start three different times. My car stalls at red lights and will decelerate in the middle of heave traffic. I am frightened to drive my vehicle and fear for me and my childrens safety. I have contacted gm several times and have had my car in for repair numerous times. My salesperson advised me to file a lemon law report and my mechanic described my vehicle as an electrical nightmare. No gm rep can explain why my vehicles battery would have caused this much damage being my car was less than 2 years old. Please help.
There is no heat in my 2012 sonic, the heat is turn to the highest position but only blows cold air. Occationally the heat will start but when the car is not in motion there is no heat and only cold air.
My car keeps shutting completely off even while driving, the radio come on and off by itself and no one can tell me why, this is very dangerous i be driving with my children in the vehicle and the car shuts off while driving in traffic
1. Car loses power when accelerating/hesitation - sometimes almost feeling like the car will shut down.it's random but happening more often.car was repaired once already for this, was better for about 3-4 months and now is doing it again.extremely dangerous when merging onto highways or making right turns on red or switching lanes. 2. Wiper fluid was not working, recall issue, but not on my car.repaired once and now not working again! 3. Something's wrong with electrical system, stereo changing stations, turning itself on and off, very loud screeching sounds occasionally, repaired with an update but still happening.4. Very strange sounds coming from suspension, it started when backing up i was told they could not find a problem 2 times, however, now it's happening while driving, in reverse and it's getting worse!5. Steering is very difficult on a windy day when on the highway.very hard to keep the car in the lane. 6.car feels like it's trying to accelerate when stopped at a light or stop sign with foot on the break.7. Electrical system/interior lights all dimming when wipers are turned on.service told me the wiper motor is a big drain on a small engine?now my car is out of warranty and i still have all these issues!!i do not feel that this car is safe or well built.it took me over 10 years to get to a point where i could afford a new hello, went with chevrolet to keep it "american".i feel like i made a huge mistake purchasing this vehicle....updated 10/20/15 updated 12/06/2017
My radio stays on in my 2012 sonic even after the car is turned off.the first time it happened i went out to start my car in the morning and it was completely dead.the car was jumped and started up fine. I drove the car for a few days without incident then i noticed the radio was coming on and off as i was driving.even after it was turned off, it would just start playing.i contacted the dealer where i purchased my car and scheduled an appointment.two days before my appointment the car battery was completely drained again in the morning. ( an extreme inconvenience and annoyance if you need to be to work on time).again the car was jumped and started right up.the day before the appointment the radio was coming on and off without me touching it.i was so annoyed i pulled the button off.luckily the radio stayed off.the next day i took the car to the dealer for the appointment and was told that the radio was damaged because i pulled the knob off.i was told $400 to replace radio and installation fees.are you kidding me?the car is only 3 years old and i have to pay to replace the radio from no fault of my own?i did not get it replaced by the dealer.i was able to pop the knob back on in a second so i know the mechanic didn't try at all. They just wanted to replace with a new one and charge me.i have pulled the fuse and currently have no radio. This is my very first new car and i have had other issues as well, key getting stuck in ignition etc. I will never by anything chevy again!!!
The shift lever button will not release when in park, so the vehicle doesnt not read that its firmly in park; the key wont release and i cannot turn off the vehicle until the button unjams itself or i lubricate it to do so. This has been happening frequently. The only fix is replacing the entire shift lever, which is upwards of $300
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. After the vehicle was driven for approximately ten minutes in the morning, the contact removed the key from the ignition. The contact stated that the vehicle attempted to crank on its own. The contact stated that the failure only occurred in the morning after the key was removed from the ignition. The failure occurred for approximately six months. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (centennial chevrolet in uniontown, pennsylvania), but was unable to replicate the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 43,642.
For about a month now everytime i go to park my car my shifter get stuck and i am unable to put my car in park or take the key out. I went to the dealer ship and i was told i could spend $150 to get it looked at & then spend how every much money it would be to fix it. I don't have that kind of money for that at the moment but now its to the point where i cant even drive my car at all because the shifter always gets stuck and i cant get my key out to park or put it in park drive reverse etc...... ! ! ! i have seen that a couple people are having this problem so its not just my car. But since it gets suck i can be driving down the road and hit the shifter by accident and it will move the car into another position because it doesn'tclick witch means i can go from driving to it being thrown into park or reverse in seconds. That's going to cause a accident!i need this fixed i drive with kids in my car on a daily basis .......... Their is something wrong in the shifter.
Idles roughly, idle increases dramatically while the car is at a stop, and the engine stalls very frequently, regardless of temperature or weather conditions. On start-up, or while stopped with the engine running, the idle will become rough and vary between 200-3,000 rpm, but not stall.also at times, while stopped, the idle will increase from normal, smooth idle up to about 3,000 rpm for approximately one second, then drop back down to 750 rpm (normal idle speed) without touching the accelerator. The engine will also stall at parking lot speeds when i push in the clutch to shift from 2nd to 1st gear. The car also often stalls when pulling out from a stop.a re-start cannot be attempted for approximately 3 seconds. Turn the key, nothing happens. I've owned this vehicle (1.4l turbo engine with 6 spd manual transmission) since 05/21/2012, and over 8,000 miles later, it still idles roughly and stalls every time i drive it.the dealerships say, "cannot reproduce. Operating to specifications."
On or around december, 2014, the shift cover would not attach permanently.on or around march 10, 2014, the electrical access plug did not operate.on or around march 6, 2014, my mother was driving around 45mph, and we hit an elk.no airbags deployed.
I purchased my car brand new with 3 miles on it in november 2011. When i hit around 7500 miles i noticed the car when stopped on a hill would drift backwards - when i got to 7800 miles the whenever i was in traffic traveling around 5-13 mph i noticed the car would not shift on it's own the rpm's would shoot up and the tach would rev but the car would not go. I would need to put it in park and then drive and it would be fine. This happened almost every day for about 2 weeks.when going to park and put it in reverse to back in the car would hesitate about 30 seconds before it would move.. I contacted my dealer and took it in. Onstar said they did not find issues when they checked. The dealer corrected the problem..on the engine control module they had to reprogram it with sps ( not sure what the means ) and it now works like the day i pulled it off the lot.... They also left me know if there are any other issues to contact them right away and they would get it right in.on the electrical - the driver window button sticks and window will go up and down on it's own until you get the button un-stuck -- this is also being repaired by the dealer however they had to order parts .. When they come in is to be determined.
Accessory cigarette lighter was being used to charge a car phone while on a trip out of state, when we stopped to get gas and had the car off and returned it on after filled with gas all the gauges on the car went crazy dropping all the way down to zero on all gauges even though the car was working properly during this time, even the speedometer showed zero, i dont know if it was because we charging the phone or what caused it. But this only happened once so far.
Power steering was not working as i was leaving the house, so i had the car towed to the dealer. Mechanic said the voltage from the battery was sporadic and prone to spiking. This spiking caused the power steering to fail, as this vehicle has no surge protector to protect electronic chips. Batter acid had also spilled out of both head mounts causing minor damage to other parts under the hood.
The button to release the car out of gear, and once in park that releases the key came apart.it has been sticking for awhile then all of a sudden, something sharp started poking out of the bottom of the button, and it has cut my husband's hand.now the button barely pushes in and the car is very hard to get out of park.
A bad smell like rotten eggs, keeps coming out of the ac/c vents and the engine of the car. I changed the air filter and everything but nothing happen the smell does not go away.
First problem started when radio remained on after key removed from ignition. Radio would turn on and off when car was off and drained newly replaced battery. Advised to remove fuse as temporary fix. Car was also losing power when highway driving (up to 70 mph). I don't speed, but car struggled to go above 70 mph. Thought i smelled something burning, had radiator checked, oil changed, fluids added at beginning of october. Three weeks later on city street, slowing for traffic when car lost power. When traffic started moving, car continued to slow to complete stop in the street despite stepping on gas. Waited 25 minutes for tow, but when tow driver came, car was able to start and move. Less than an hour later, the problem happened again and car was towed. At mechanic, computer codes indicated low/no transmission fluid (even though fluid was added at oil change only three weeks prior). No evidence of leaks. Mechanic added fluid and went for ride on suburban back road, car lost power after 10 minutes. He had to wait approx 20 minutes for car to move again. He drained transmission fluid and found metallic bits, and says transmission would likely need replacing. Car has fairly low mileage '54k miles' and has been properly maintained. Also car was previously serviced because key was stuck in ignition.
First issue was electrical issues (bad lights, unfunctioning controls,ac adapter would not give power, outside lightbulbs do not last, headlamp controls fell apart, mirror conrtrols fell off, vent controls fell apart. When electric window control stopps working and hisses and smokes when engine is turned on. I also have been shocked painfully when trying to get the ac adapter to work. Next came repair of the ignition switch.. I could not pass state inspection because my "check engine" light was on. In august 2017, car had engine misfire, which cost me repair on the fuel pump. A few days after that, the battery died and i replaced it. One week later,, it started to smoke under the hood and the car was overheating. Then a few hours later, electric was on and off but power to vechicle stopped.. This ended up being the serp. Main belt. Next came the ignition switch. (novembwr 2017)early 2018.. Ac adapter stopped working again, and it was replaced. A c stopped blowing cold air spring 2018, and within weeks, the window control failing again, i have had heat stroke twice. Window control unit smokes and hisses when i turn on engine. Window also cracked while driving 55mph. Plastic vents crackedoutside therm fell off & plastic undercarriage cover ripped b4 aircond, followed by the fan. When i brought car in for airc, i was told i needed new rear brake pads and the radiator fan and compressor.. There is no therm for engine. Fixed only brakes. Car then began to overheat while in traffic. Replaced radiator fan 2 weeks later. . still need new ac compressor. Window control began to fail again next. First time window conrol failed, battery died same night, and i had to get serp. Belt and new battery. New battery has already had to be jumped 3 times, and seems as though engine misfire is beginning again. Problems going uphill today..slow accelleration, unsteady fuel flow.
I am owner of 2012 chevy sonic, yesterday again - when i shut off my car ...it started back up again just after i shut the key off car was in park. Plze do h e l p - m e !!!
Stalls easily and frequently when pulling out from a stop and is then difficult to restart, or i must wait about 5 seconds before i can attempt a restart.uneven idle most of the time.dealer blames me for the stalling (says i'm not used to the manual transmission, but many are complaining on the online forum www.sonicownersforum.com)most importantly, yesterday (08/04/2012), the fully warmed 1.4l turbo engine in my sonic rev'd to from idle (750 rpm) to exactly 3,000 rpm then back down to 750 rpm (while 6 spd manual in neutral, clutch fully depressed, right foot firmly on the brake and not touching the accelerator pedal. I had stopped at the end of a driveway and was waiting on traffic so that i could pull out. My right foot never moved from the brake pedal and was in no way touching the accelerator pedal. The idle speed increased to 3,000 rpm all on it's own and back down to idle, much to my shock and amazement.thankfully, i was fully stopped. At only 3,070 miles and not yet 3 months of ownership, my new 2012 sonic is beginning to have a mind of it's own.
When putting my car into park the gear shift button is not releasing therefore the car can not be turned off! the service place is changing me $315 to replace the whole gear shift! also gear shift is sticking not wanting to go into park!!!
The light my engine shows and it alwayssmell labor ke oil
Automatic shifter button sticks which doesn't let the key to come out. It's very dangerous driving while the button is stuck in. You can bump the shifter n it'll take it out of gear due to the shifter button sticking n not popping out.
My wife and i w'er hit by a person that ran a red light the car was tottled out with major front end damage no air bags deployed at all when the side air bags should have deployed but didnt causing my whole side and head smashing into the side driver door
Vehicle started to randomly show check engine light on, smell of gasoline from time to time. Every time i would take it in the light would not be on so they couldn't help. Finally light stayed on and vehicle would shut off while i would drive, especially if i hit a stop light. I had to immediately take vehicle in and i had to rent a rental car so i can get to work that morning. Dealership called and said that it was a vacuum issue causing all the stalling and all the issues with the multiple lights on the dash. It turned out to be the air duct for the air intake box. This vehicle was very dangerous to drive and i have seen several complaints with same issue, vehicle is barely out of warranty and at 36000 milesbut vehicle has less than 50k miles. I had to pay $350.00 for this incident and chevrolet will not cover it.
While driving my car, the car looses power and began to stall. I've went to two chevy dealerships and two repair and no one is able to tell me what's the problem
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While the vehicle was stationary with the key in the ignition, the vehicle started up without warning. The vehicle began to shake and the contact stated that the auto-start feature may have malfunctioned. On another occasion, while driving 50 mph, the vehicle began to shake again and seemed as if it would stall. Bell pierre chevrolet in seattle, washington was made aware of the failures by phone. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and referred the contact to the dealer. The failure mileage was approximately 27,500.
Horn failure. Sounded my horn at another vehicle and the horn continued to sound even after i took my had off of it. This continued on for about 10 to 15 minutes, including turning car on and off, until the point the horn completely died on it. Horn has intermittently worked on and off for about 2 years now. I was driving on a highway on i-55 southbound between california ave and pulaski road in chicago. This is a major failure as it is a small car and larger vehicles (suvs/semi-trucks/etc.) do not always see me. Makes vehicle very unsafe to drive.
We have 11000 miles on the car so we've not experience many of the mechanical problems many have, but ours is none less dangerous. The radio started coming on and off by itself. You cut it off when you get out of car, the radio comes back on .turn it off and it comes back on and overnight the battery goes dead. Stumbled on the dead battery issue after i replaced the battery and the same thing happened again. Once again, the last mechanic died at the local chevy place.they said they have one solution, replace the radio.they have no bulletons from the factory on it so just undo the audio fuse to save the battery, so we did and it did save the battery but no sounds in the car now.at all. With just 11,000 miles we've not yet experienced the horror stories about the motor and transmissions but have noticed, even with low mileage, i need to add some oil. Gm can't and has no desire to fix chevy problems. I think this has added tremendously to people stop buying their sedans and small trucks. It's not there service department fault. It's a faulty designs and engineering. I've had 4 unfixable major engineering problems in the past 20 years with their vehicles and this is the last chevy i'll ever buy.they need to blame their sales problems all on their product designs. It's not a dealer or service department issue. It's the design and engineering of these dang cars they build. Some times it's a dog in your own kennel that bites you. It's a engineer in their own kennel that is not the sharpest pencil in the box they're hiring to design systems and engineering their systems. They have idling problems with their colorado trucks and sticking this 4 cyclinder 2.7 cu.in motor in their big trucks, which already has cooling systems design problems, borders on lunacy. I'm done with chevy.
My radio will turn itself on hours after my car has been turned off. I've had to take out the fuse everytime i exit the car so the battery won't drain. I don't know where to begin with fixing this problem. It's been going on for a few weeks now. I've called to the dealership where the car was purchasedand they said it was a manufacturing problem. Please don't tell me i have to pay for this out of pocket. From what i've seen there's a lot of these cases on the internet. So it's not just a random problem.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that the horn failed to activate. The failure occurred on five occasions. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the relay box needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 45,000.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that the key was unable to be removed from the ignition. In addition, the shifter fractured while shifting from park to drive. The vehicle was driven to a dealer (hennessy buick gmc, 7261 jonesboro road building 1, morrow, ga 30260, (844) 240-2377) for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not notified. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 69,000.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. When the contact attempted to place the vehicle into park, the key would not release from the ignition switch. The failure occurred thirty times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 38,000.
This car has so many problems. I have had it to the dealership on 4 separate occasions and it is getting ready to go in for the 5th time. Each time so far i have been told the same thing...."it doesn't throw any codes and we can't get it to duplicate the issue so there is nothing to be done but just keep driving it and bring it back if it keeps happening"....{whatever did mechanics do back in the day before cars had computers?} - anyway, the transmission is automatic and acts like it is grabbing and doesn't want to shift up through the gears so it feels like hard shifting (started before it even had 10,000 miles on it) - it doesn't do it all the time, but often enough that it is a problem that i worry about (it's even done it when on cruise control a couple of times). Now, at less than 30,000 miles the car is idling rough and when i press the brakes it makes a noise in the shifter? the autolights adjust themselves even when there is no change in lighting outdoors (pitch black night and the lights will dim down for no reason at 45mph running down the road with no other vehicles around, etc.) and the radio adjusts its volume the same way and it even turns itself off randomly. The traction control and stability trac lights come on sometimes, stay on for awhile and then go off. Now that it's getting hot and i'm running the ac, it is acting up also - blowing full blast then dropping down, then back up again.... - dealer insists, no codes thrown, won't replicate problem when they have it, therefore no problem exists - this car has problems - i would not recommend a sonic to anyone. Please investigate transmissions and electrical issues in these cars.
I have had multiple problems with this car, but the latest is the engine light, reduced power light, and the gas cap. While driving the engine light, and reduced power light came on. The car immediately slowed down which almost caused an accident because i was going 45 mph. Took the car to [xxx], and they couldn't find the problem. They decided to replace the computer system on the car because it was still covered by warranty. The light came back on five days later, but this time i was on the interstate in the tunnel. I barely made it out without causing an accident. Lastly, i went to the gas station and couldn't get the gas cap off. I had to use a wrench to get the gas cap off. Bought another gas cap and it did the same thing. I only have 40,000 miles on this car. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
I purchased a car from royal kia on may 29th a week later i felt a pool on the gas pedal took it in to royal kia and he said it was just a shifting gears second week almost died on me while driving it was between 2:00 and 4:00 in the afternoon it kind of felt like if it was overheated and every time i came to a stop and try to go it almost died took it back into royal kia they have been giving me such a hard time i don't feel it's safe for me i've tried to talk to him about give me giving me my money back so i can purchase something else it's safer i am not satisfied with this car the guy from royal kia the salesperson wanted to take it to green valley and to work on it at his house i refuse to let him do that until the manager umberto called me back and said that they would have their mechanics look at it but he was a certified mechanic i just didn't trust them i i've been afraid to drive the car of getting stranded somewhere this week on monday they finally gave me a rental i got things done in these past few days and i have when i bought my car
The contact owned a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While the contact's husband was driving 35 mph in inclement weather, the condition went from rain to snow and the vehicle started to fishtail. The contact stated that the all terrain traction control system activated and the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that her husband lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. The driver's side frontal air bag and the passenger frontal air bag deployed; however, the driver's frontal air bag only partially deployed. The driver sustained a fractured sternum, a fractured hip, a fractured pelvis, and internal bleeding. The contact's husband died from his injuries. The passenger suffered a mild concussion, kidney failure, and burns from the seat belts and air bag deployment. The driver and passenger were transported by separate ambulances for medical attention. The vehicle was towed to an independent facility. A police report was filed. Lithia chevrolet of redding (200 e cypress ave, redding, ca 96002, (530) 410-6002) was contacted as to what may have caused the vehicle to lose control. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was destroyed. The approximate failure mileage was 85,560.
The vehicle's electrical system is malfunctioning, causing the speedometer display not to show up when the car turns on. It's also caused the vehicle to rev up and down while the car is idle.
I was driving down a 7% grade going down hill at 50 miles an hour my car shut off, steering locked and brakes didn't work the only thing i could use was the emergency brake if i wasn't calm and used my head me and my son would have died. My car now is making a loud noise and shaking after it warms up. My shifter gets stuck and i cant park or take my key out. Everything in this car is an alarm for danger or death. I've called the dealership and they don't return my calls. I finally got a hold of them and they said i can bring it in but its not covered under warranty. We don't have that kind of money for repairs like this.
My wife and i w'er hit by a person that ran a red light the car was tottled out with major front end damage no air bags deployed at all when the side air bags should have deployed but didnt causing my whole side and head smashing into the side driver door
While driving at highway speed on a two lane road at night, applied brakes to avoid animal in road.conditions were clear and road was dry.there was plenty of time to slow to avoid animal so this was not a panic stop.upon application of brakes, headlights went out.dash lights stayed on making it impossible to see out of the vehicle.applied brakes with more urgency and all four wheels locked.vehicle skidded straight until the right tires made contact with the right shoulder.the car then spun counter clockwise back onto the roadway, across both lanes, and came to rest on the shoulder of the oncoming lane (approximately one and one-half revolutions).skid marks on highway confirmed the wheel lock and the spin.car was shut off and re-started and all systems worked fine.unable to duplicate the problem.
My 2012 chevrolet sonic has gotten its second flat tire from alignmentissues, and is about to need a third tire replaced. The car has 26000 miles with a clean bill of health, other then major steering issues. The tires completely run bald on the outer edge of the tire, and a shaking is experienced at all speeds while driving the car. I had taken it to the dealership about this issue, but was told it was happening because i am not doing an alignment every 6500 to 7500 miles; which i find to be ridiculous. I have never heard of having to align a car that frequently. So there verdict this far is i have to by all new tires and get an alignment done on my car with only 26,000 miles. I contacted corporate headquarters out of frustration caused from the dealer ship writing me off twice, and saying its nothing to do with the car. Unfortunately corporate was unwilling to rectify this situation because of the same reason, it is considered wear and tear. I don't know how a car with such low miles could already have such a horrible alignment, requiring three tires to be changed. I have drove chevy's my whole life and have never experienced anything comparable to this.
My antifreeze pressure hose busted,i took it to the deallership they said that i had aitifreeze in the engine. They say it will only cost me around $400.00 dose this sound right .i think a problem with the engine cause the hose to burst an it all should.is there a recall on this.the hose busted while the car was being driven on the highway
My wife was driving on the highway and it felt like transmission was slipping . We have a 6 speed manual turbo chevy sonic. While the car was under the 36000 warranty an engine fault light came on and we brought it to the dealer. I believe they said it had to do with turbo ? they repaired the fault and now at 50000 miles it appears the transmission has let go and/or clutch ? recall 14234 appears to be what happened to our vehicle or the aforementioned turbo problem they worked on and want us to pay for something that maybe a recall item or faulty workmanship during warranty period.
A bad smell like rotten eggs, keeps coming out of the ac/c vents and the engine of the car. I changed the air filter and everything but nothing happen the smell does not go away.

The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that while driving at 45 mph over a bump, the vehicle felt loose from underneath. The vehicle was taken to a dealer but there was no failure determined. The contact stated that failure recurred five months later and in addition, the vehicle made a humming noise when making a turn. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who diagnosed that the stabilizer links needed to be replaced. The contact also stated that the window washer fluid drained on the engine, and the dealer diagnosed that the hose connected to the fluid container was disconnected and needed to reconnect. The vehicle was not remedied. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 32,000.
The technician informed that the oil pressure indicator switch would need to be replaced. The vehicle was currently being repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 44,500.
This car has given me so many problems. The radiator, the motor everything.
Air intake hose has been replaced due to cracking only 3 years old at that time about 45k miles. Now the shift knob sticks and the button takes forever to release, or i have to pop it back out so i can take the key out otherwise the key gets stuck. Getting worse...now it is becoming harder to shift into park. All these problems occur when stationary...i have not attempted to move the car into other gears while in motion but i know it will happen if it is pushed while that button is not released.
As i was driving down a intersection my car was going 50 miles an hour, then it just shut off. It's a5 speed and it shut off and then started back up.the car was in 5 th gear at the time it was very scary im glad there was no one directly behind me. I've had problems with this car since day 1 there is other problems with it. But the dealers say its normal. They dont know why it did this. But this car is unsafe and to me its a lemon. I'm tired of feeling like a idiot this car has issues.
The car has under 100k miles and seems to be having transmission problems. Everything has been well maintaintanced. I recently purchased the car being the second owner. The car has issues getting up to speed causing people to tailgate me or speed up and go around me. You can also feel/hear the transmission going through the gears. The takeoff is absolutely terrible. You can tell the engine is working hard. The rpms don't go above the danger zone but they do rise when switching through the gears. It's very likely to cause a accident especially on the interstate. The car cannot get out of it's own way.
2012 sonic has the same engine as the chevy cruze, the cruze has a recall on it for the engine valve, yet the sonic does not.my check engine light came on and i took it to get diagnosed and was told the engine valve needs replaced.called the dealership and there are on outstanding recalls on my vehicle.i don't want to pay to get it fixed when the same engine on the cruze has the same issue.
November 26,2012 we financed a2012 chevy sonic on november 17th. It only had 5 miles on it. Sweet. Right??? nope by wed november 21st the engine light came on and the car was over heating. It was spilling out coolant fluid everywhere. Since it was the holidays i has to wait till friday after thanksgiving to get it towed to the dealership where i purchased it. It is monday november 26th and it is still in the shop. The service tech said they fixed what they thought was the problem, but it didn't fix the problem. So now they say it's something else now. What a drag!they gave me a loaner on monday and reassured me that there would be no cost to me, and everything would be covered under warranty. Well of course i just got the darn thing.. I'm really disappointed because this is the fourth car i bought from this dealership. Well tomorrow is tuesday november 27th let's see what happens. I should fight for a different new car!!!!!
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. After driving approximately 35 mph, the contact parked the vehicle and noticed smoke emerging from the engine compartment. The contact drove the vehicle back home (a mile away) and noticed a lot of smoke emerging from the engine compartment. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the oil cooler component and lines failed and needed replacement. The dealer was not contacted. An independent mechanic could not find the part to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 145,000.
In 2015, my 2012 chevrolet sonic had to have the fuel purge valve replaced. The car worked for a while after this. However, a few months ago, it started having a rough idle, with the rpms dipping up and down. The problem got worse recently, when the car actually completely died while making a left hand turn, almost causing me to get hit. Now, it is even worse. Now, in addition to the rough idle, traction control randomly engages even when i am not slipping, causing me to lose all power for brief periods of time, while in motion. The traction control is glitching so bad that it even randomly engages when i am completely stopped. This is a huge safety issue, and the dealership that sold me the car wants $113 just to tell me what is causing it, and how much it will cost to actually fix. There are no active recalls on this vehicle, but further research on the model i own, shows other owners having similar issues. Chevrolet has been no help
Multiple reports of daewoo sonics (and cruzes, also sourced from daewoo though assembled in the united states) equipped with the 1.4l turbocharged engine stalling out and/or accelerating poorly in warm/hot conditions when using 87 octane fuel. These vehicles are unsafe in warm weather when owners use regular, unleaded gasoline, even though the manufacturer does not prohibit low octane fuel from being used. (premium fuel is "recommended" but not required, and the demographic groups that will purchase these cars likely will not wish to spend additional money for premium fuel for economical, subcompact automobiles.)nhtsa needs to investigate these examples of government motors once again endangering the general public.
Engine light came on.took car to dealership to diagnose problem.dealer codes: p0101, p0171, throttle body intake tube torn allowing unmetered air to enter engine.repair cost about$450please advise if this is frequent occurrence in chevy sonic my 12.are there similar complaintssubject to recall?
I have a 2012 chevy sonic lt automatic with the 1.8 liter. The car started having problems around 45,000 miles and has gotten worse over time.the car on cold start ups has a grinding sound. This grinding most of the time only happens on cold start ups but does at times happens on warm start ups. This sounds like metal against metal and it rattles. This seems to happen until the car is fully started and running. I am getting concerned because it is getting worse and louder.
I bought this vehicle brand new. Paint started to loose shine about two months ago ( i personally wash the vehicle with properly cars wash soup). Took to dealership and they can't cover under manufacture warranty. Cost over $400.00. Check engine on. Took to dealership and they found two hoses damaged and thermostat leaking.
I am owner of 2012 chevy sonic, yesterday again - when i shut off my car ...it started back up again just after i shut the key off car was in park. Plze do h e l p - m e !!!
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that antifreeze was leaking from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician was unable to find a leak and no repairs were made to the vehicle. The failure mileage was unknown.
Engine is running rough with no check engine light. Also air bag light is on with no collisions for it to appear.
I brought my car in because there was something wrong with the steering. I asked that an oil change be done and when i picked it up the car had white smoke coming out of the engine and had a strong burning smell. There was a lot of smoke i was only gone 10 minutes from the dealer before i had to bring it back. Brought it back dealer said they smelled burning and sprayed a deodorizer in vents to mask it, but they did not address the smoking that is still happening. Filed compliant with gm requesting a buy back of vehicle. I bought the vehicle the first year it was out,and have also had multiple issues with the front end, air conditioner not to mention that the dealer dropped car off rack and caused damaged.
Vehicle stalls when pulling out from a stop, and/or at low speeds when the clutch is pushed in.then, it takes three seconds before the car can attempt to be re-started!very dangerous when turning left across a highway or into traffic, especially since there is what seems to be a 'programmed' waiting period of 3 seconds before you can attempt to re-started.i've owned this vehicle (1.4l turbo engine with 6 spd manual transmission) since 05/21/2012, and over 8,000 miles later, it still stalls every time i drive it.the dealerships say, "cannot reproduce. Operating to specifications."
Hasburning smell of anti freeze and wires melting. Air bags don't work on front passenger side.
Idles dramatically while the car is at a stop, and the engine stalls very frequently, regardless of temperature or weather conditions. On start-up, or while stopped with the engine running, the idle will become rough and very between 200-3,000 rpm.also at times, while stopped, the idle will increase from normal, smooth idle up to about 3,000 rpm for approximately one second, then drop back down to 750 rpm (normal idle speed) without touching the accelerator. The automatic shifting from 1st to 3rd gear completely skips around.the car shifts are hard to the point, once you come to a stop it feels like the transmission is going to fall out.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that there was a burning plastic smell in the interior of the vehicle and was causing discomfort to the contact's nose, eyes, clothes and taste. The contact stated that the odor would be come uncomfortable after being in the vehicle for a minimum of 45 minutes. The vehicle was taken to the dealer five times who confirmed the smell but was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was notified and advised that an investigator would be sent to further assess the failure. The failure mileage was 400 and the current mileage was 2,100.
Major concern: my power steering failed. The dealer said the power steering columnneeded to be replaced ($1,300). The car has high mileage (excess of 150,000). I have had several cars with similar mileage but never had the power steering fail. Since this is electronic steering there doesn't appear to be any warning/no preventative maintenance. Fortunately i was not on the highway at the time this occurred but in the driveway after having driven several hours the same day. We checked for relays in the fuse box but none are marked for the power steering. There were at least two previous times when backing out of my driveway that the power steering locked up but then started working fine. Dealer could not find the problem for the first two incidents. My car has been sitting in my driveway since june 2015 because i didn't feel safe driving if even it was fixed. I've always owned gm vehicles (for 36 years) but the lack of concern about this problem prompted me to purchase a subaru. At the time of the steering failure i still owed 2 years on my loan.the second problem which i've complained about since the car was new was the transmission. There was always slow response when pulling away from a stop. It worsened after the car had been driven several hours. Again, nothing was diagnosed.
Took my 2012 chevy sonic to the dealer today and was told that the cooling fan is cracked, the shifter assembly needs to be repaired (have had a problem with the key sticking for a few months now), and the check engine light was on because of an air duct outlet.total repairs to be around $1,000.no idea why the cooling fan cracked on a 3 year old car with only 66,000 miles!#totally aggravated#
2012 chevrolet sonic.consumer writes in regards to recalls and vehicle repairs issues.the consumer stated the check engine light illuminated. The knock sensor and lower transmission mount were replaced.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While drivingapproximately 5 mph, smoke emerged from the engine compartment and a beeping noise started. Also, the temperature control warning indicator illuminated. The contact stopped the vehicle and turned off the engine. The contact parked the vehicle on the side of the road and left it there for two days. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that four hoses attached to the radiator failed and the thermostat housing was damaged. In april, thevehicle was taken to an independent mechanic because it was experiencing a failure with the heater system. It was diagnosed that antifreeze was leaking from the radiator to the engine. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 62,856.
Every cold start the is a grinding and rattle noise that comes from the timing side. I took it to chevy and they said that cant do anything unless they hear it which i thought was reasonable and the next morning they called and stated my car has no noise even tho this happens every cold start. I also have a loud knocking noise coming from the engine when it is warm or has been driven for more than 20minutes the dealer says its normal but at 21454the noise is 3 times louder than ever before. I had a check engine light code p0011 intake camshaft position timing -over-advanced (bank-1) which i took in and they fixed it 4days later and it is back same code i called the dealer and they said to bring it in i explained i don't have a ride to work they said i have to figure it out because i have to pay the deposit for a rental i shouldn't even need. The engine also seems to sputter and lose power randomly also the rpms will go up to 2500 sometimes while stopping i have always drive. Manual transmissions i believe i would know when i am pushing the gas! chevy seems like they don't want to touch my car until my warranty is out i am so disappointed by their actions and this car sad i got 4 of my friends to buy them too in 2013 i just want chevy to buy back my car or fix all of it! this is my first american 100% brand new car and i feel like it is the biggest mistake i have ever made. The whole we cant just cant look at it unless we see or hear it is kind of bs!
My mom purchased her vehicle and for this last year it has been nothing but issues.she took it and had it repaired because the oil light kept coming on and the gear shift sticking and the transmission.she took it to the dealership they charged her 400$.this is the second time.autoplex in aransas pass texas.as well as charging her for a battery that was under warranty.the car is now undriveable as it wont shift at all.we again took it to the dealership.they are not very thoroughly fixing it.my mother is 74 and is on a fixed income.the financial repairs are ridiculous as well as the safety issue.
Automatically stops
A few months after purchasing my 2012 chevy sonic, i've noticed a decease in power and hesitation in its automatic shifting between gears. I've taken it in several times with the same issue, and each time the service techs (even the service manager) has told me and explained that it is behaving "normal" and "to design". If it were "normal" why hadn't it done that driving right off the lot??? and why is it, years later, its shifting hesitation has gotten worse to the point of severe jerking as it shifts from one gear to another, as if someone were learning how to drive stick for the first time?????? there is nothing "normal" about how my vehicle is performing. It is complete[xxx] that i've been getting the run around about this issue for years. And they refuse to admit there's a problem, nor will they service it, which makes my vehicle ineligible to be claimed as a lemon, which it obviously is!!!information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c.
Beginning from the first month of ownership. Approx. 28,000 mi. At cold start there is a rattle noise like metal on metal. Then will disappear right after. Has been getting worse/ louder. Hard shifts, loss of power. Now as of last night the check engine light is on and the car runs rough. High idle, stalls, knocking noises from engine. Fault code. P0011?
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph, the check engine and traction warning indicators illuminated continuously. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the catalytic converter failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 73,581.
Car with 21,000 miles overheated while using the ac. Engine coolant alarm came on and i turned the ac off and light shut off also. Took it to an auto service chain and they diagnosed that the radiator fan motor had to be replaced.cost: $463.
Gear/transmissionfailure while driving in steady traffic...car suddenly went to 5-6000rpms without pressure on the gas and then down quickly to 1000rpms before i was able to stop and pull over.afterwards, i couldn't get the car to move above 1000rpms and reverse gear went into failure.the tow truck couldn't move it without placing it into manual mode.it's been in the garage for a week with all diagnostics showing failure within the transmission.at this point, i either need to replace the transmission or buy a new car.i only had approximately 55,000 miles on the car in 7 years.
Issues began with an intermittent rattle at cold start after car had been sitting about 30mins to an hr, from being driven. No codes showing so went un-repaired, once pinpointed, it was replicated, still no codes, no fix, starting about aug 2012 after my 1st service car began to shake at idle while stopped in d, started getting worse progressively. Vehicle stalled in middle of intersection while trying to shift itself (auto trans) into 3rd, violent jerk to a stop and immediately picked itself up and jerked forward and moved, with my children in the car. Next stall occurred about 3-4 weeks later, idled so rough and low while in d at a stop light, car bogged down and stalled, started itself right back up. Engine power surging began at this point. While braking or on brake while stopped, engine would power surge thrusting car forward, came very close to hitting several cars while pulling into parking spot from these surges. Had taken vehicle in multiple times between 1st occurrence and this point in sept. It was duplicated with multiple symptoms at once, including as given from dealer: hard shaking, misfire, and rattle/knock at cold start. Only code to show was for the misfire, repair: valve cleaning, not fixed. Rattle became a knocking. Idle meanwhile getting rougher. Took back forknocking, surging, rough idle, stalling. No codes, repair: gm tech assist had camshaft actuators replaced , fixed knocking/rattle at cold start only! idle worse, now loss of engine power intermittently causing vehicle to hardly move, had vehicle back less than 24hrs. Almost had a "t-bone" accident and head on into a pole in same incident due to said loss of power. Asked for replacement (after 7 service repair attempts), requestpresently in limbo, no offer of replacement thus far! i am severely concerned for my family's safety at this point, clearly defective in itself with no codes showing.
I was driving my 2012 chevrolet sonic commuting my grandchild to pre-k,pulling out from stop sign onto straightaway street crossing in front of distant oncoming traffic, and my car stalled, very scary as could have been very bad wreck with my grandchild being hurt as myself! fortunately i let coast to side of street as i was only going 10 miles or less an hour when it shut off! it wouldn't start right off! it finally started after a few seconds, maybe 5 or more went by! this is very disturbing as it risks my life ,plus another also,as he is only 4 years old! i need to know if car is even safe to keep driving!
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that the vehicle exhibited an abnormal exhaust sound. The contact checked the oil and an abnormal fuel odor emitted from the oil. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 66,000.
This car when sitting at a idle shakes it don't matter if you start it up in the morning or in the day or night. It acts like it has a misfire when driving like all the cylinders aren't working properly. Taken to dealer twice since i bought it new in march 2012. Has a rough idle everyday ,after it warms up and you drive where ever you are going and then sit at a idle it bogs down, shakes the car. And im tired of going through this the dealer says its normal . And that the tech guys say its there number one complaint! im upside down in it so im stuck unless i can maybe file the lemon law.the dealer told me the first time i went that it was the alternator from sitting overnight. Lol really??? and that the chevy trucks do it too. Come on....and if the car has 3 or less bats showing on the gas area it runs even crappier like its going to break down right in the street. I have the 5 speed, and its a terrible car!
Coolant leak from water pump, applicable hoses and surge tank. Replaced water pump, surge tank and hose in 2016. Need to replace water pump, hoses and surge tank again in 2018. There is also an engine oil leak yet to be identified. 1.8 l engine.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While the vehicle was parked, the ignition would inadvertently start and the rpms increased violently. All the indicators on the instrument panel were illuminated. The contact spoke with herb jones auto group (1605 ring rd, elizabethtown, ky 42701, (270) 765-2123). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified and was not able to assist. The failure mileage was 100,000. The vin was invalid.
Tl-contact owns a 2012 chevy sonic ---- contact was stopped at traffic light and heat went cold --no hat only blows cold air -- dealership did diagnostic test and vehicle was fixed once already -- vehicle has 60,000 miles --- heat keeps going cold when vehicle is stopped .0 recalls associated with this vin...cb
Takata recalli was driving and i tried to brake at an intersection due to a red light and there was a car in front of me, i was unable to use the brakes because the pad got stiff and it didn't allow me to brake, i had to use my emergency brake but i hit the car in front of me .
While driving 20-25 mph, the engine stalled without warning. The vehicle failed to restart. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The dealer diagnosed that the air duct/valve cracked and the transmission cable failed.the vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 28,765.
Current mileage is 26,9851.car seems to lose power when accelerating and hesitates (almost shutting down), it happens randomly while driving as well and is now happening more and more often.it' very dangerous when crossing intersections or making a right on red and especially dangerous when accelerating to enter a highway.2.rear suspension makes strange noises upon backing up/stopping;3.very bad odor coming from a/c vents....disgusting, almost smells like plastic burning or burning rotten eggs;4.i hear strange noises in the back brakes, not constant but random and getting louder when it does happen;5.wiper fluid not working, i've been told this is a recall issue;6.the automatic dashboard lights are constantly changing, most especially when turning the wipers on/off.it doesn't seem to matter if you're in complete darkness or daylight.7.sometimes the car will not lock until you put the key back in the ignition, restart the car, take it out of park and put it back in park.sometimes i have to do this 2 or 3 times, each time getting back out of the car to try to lock it.8. Steering this car on the highway at highway speeds is difficult...the car swerves and if it's a windy day it's beyond difficult to keep this car in the lane.very dangerous.9.the radio turns itself on and off as it pleases.it took me years to be able to finally purchase a new car and now there are not only 6 recalls on the car but i also have all the additional problems listed above. There's a 45 day wait to have the recalls repaired and event with that i am now going to have to take a day off of work without pay to get this crap all fixed!i feel like i have wasted my money.so much for expecting reliability and quality.
When my wife places car in park, removes keys, the car will attempt to restart?!! yes re-start<<this is very dangerous & i am fearful for her life!!!! 2012 sonic was purchased @ jon hall chevroletin daytona beach, fl. In 2011. With 700+ miles on it already. I'd certainly appreciate somebody contacting them (jon hall) and allow her to take it in for a free repair. Car is used only for her to go to work & back.this car fairly new (2012) has defect in it from the day she received it ...plze do help. Her life may be at stake. (fire, explosion etc..)!!!!!!! [email protected]
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that the vehicle would hesitate to accelerate over 10 mph. In addition, the vehicle stalled when idling and the check engine warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed the unknown parts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unavailable.
At 54,600 miles it was using oil and smooking out the exhaust !! in motion. The intake manifold had a bad check valve and intake had to be replaced ,very common on the 1.4 turbo engine as i found out by googling this issue ,no update on manifold so this willhappen again !!!
No check engine light was on, not when vehicle has stalled.my vehicle has had multiple issues. Stalls while moving and at a dead stop. And a scent of burning like a electrical short behind the dashboard.i am afraid that this vehicle could stall while i am on the road and cause me to be rear ended causing a serious crash.
12/23/16, i purchased a 2012 chevrolet sonic. 4/6/17, i was at a traffic light when smoke come in the vents from the hood of the car. I called onstar & to run a diagnostic. The diagnostic didn't return any information & i contacted the dealer & took the vehicle for service on 4/9/17. I was told the thermostat housing was leaking and caused the smoking. The coolant system was flushed & filled & a gm oil, lube, filter change was done. The vehicle was ready for pick on 4/19/17. A few weeks later the car was smoking again. I called the dealer, i was told it was probably just fluid on the engine. The car continued to smoke periodically. 6/7/17, there was a large pool of oil under the car, i took the car to a local shop. They said that the oil had been overfilled & that it blew a seal. I called the dealer, i was told they did not overfill the oil & made another service appointment. I was told again there was a problem with the coolant system & the oil & that was the reason for the smoking.repairs completed 7/10/17. 9/27/17, while driving the check engine light came on, so i called onstar for a diagnostic & they gave me an error code p0299. They told me that it was an airflow problem. I called the dealer & asked for the service manager & gave her the error code. She said there was a problem with the turbo & that i needed to bring the vehicle in. I took the car to them 10/3/17. 10/4/17, the service department called me & told me that the turbo on the car was bad. The repairs were completed on 10/12/17. 10/13/17 the car overheated. The vehicle was leaking coolant in two places. I took it to a different dealer & they said the t-joint in the coolant system was leaking. The repairs were completed on 10/18/17. 11/3/17 an email from on-star said there was an engine problem. I contacted on-star for a diagnostic & they said something is wrong with the coolant system.
Car started misfiring when accelerating and would jerk and be very rough when idling but no engine light. Full tune up found that open valve cover gasket was damaged and that seals were plastic when they should've been rubber, this caused oil to enter the spark plug wells. Changed gasket and seals but problem persisted. Took to the dealership and was told that ignition switch in cylinder 1 was bad, this corrected the issue but now car has burning smell at times.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. The failure occurred on several occasions. The vehicle was jumpstarted in order to start. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the battery was functioning properly. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 47,025.
When i press the gas pedal the rpms shoot up but car excelerates slowly. It jerks hard when switching to another gear and takes several minutes to finally get to a safe speed. Sometimes the car struggles to go uphill and hardly able to reverse. Dealership cleared my engine codes during my last oil change. Check engine light came back on a week later, autozone pulled 3 codes (p0700, p0300 and p0717). Changed my spark plugs, used lucas oil/5.25 oz. Fuel treatment twice but still no change. Sometimes i can smell burning rubber. This problem makes it hard to safely merge onto highways and get through traffic lights fast enough. Now autozone has accidentally cleared my codes so i can't see if any of the above listed codes have been resolved.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that the check engine and gear box warning indicators illuminated while the vehicle was in drive, reverse, or park. While traveling approximately 55 mph on a major highway, the vehicle decelerated and stalled. The contact stated that the gears were difficult to shift during the failure. The contact was able to restart the vehicle. The dealer stated that the intake duct and boot needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v315000 (power train). The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 32,000.
Iam having problems with my windshield wiper fluid the hoseor something is causing the fluid to drain on the ground i explained to bradley chevrolet in franklin indiana that this has been a recall issue but they stated that my vin number wasn't in the recall but i am having the same issue that is dumb i want this work completed under the recall and fixed and i am having a lean codeof po171 come up that onstar diagnosed and bradley doesn't want to even look at it without charging me a diagnostic fee when i already have the code feeling very frustrated please help me
My vehicle has been a nightmare.
A month ago, my 2012 chevrolet sonic transmission started not shifting into second gear and severely shifting when persuaded. After that it stopped responding in reverse as well, unless i was to inch forward in drive only to shift back into reverse, which for a while worked. I am a city driver as well and have only added 2,000 miles in 5 months. Now after buying a used transmission and having the shop put it in, it is still not responding in reverse, which the part sold to me should have worked. Hearing this made me come to the realization that it cant be the transmission, but i know next to nothing when it comes to vehicles.when i search my car for recalls there are none but there is a recall for the transmissions made two months after mine, which to me, because my car is having the same response, the manufacturing date shouldn't matter. I have taken it to many shops and no one knows what is wrong with it, and i'm not sure if i took it to actual crossroads chevrolet if they could figure it out either. I bought this car 5 months ago for $4700.
First problem was the check engine light came on. Called onstar and they said it had something to do with emission. Called dealer, they checked it out and said it was a faulty evap solenoid. Dealer replaced solenoid on 3-22-2012. While there, they also told me there was a recall on the drivers side airbag. I never received any notice about a recall. Said they fixed that too. Problem # 2- today 4-15, 2012, when i apply the brakes, its making what seems like a rubbing sound !! called onstar again, but they couldn't tell me anything. I will be taking this piece of crap car back to the dealers !!this car is only 4 months old with 2800 miles on it. !!
I turned on windshield wipers & the engine died. This was the first time it had rained after i bought the car & really did not at this time associate the wipers & the engine dying until later that same day when contacted a friend of mine to drive the car. The dealer contacted gm about the problem but they don't seem to be very concerned about the problem. The dealer replaced the wiper motor but that did not solve the problem. It is a long story & i'm very concerned for the safety of myself & others. It died the other day in traffic when it started to rain & i turned on the wipers and almost was hit by a truck. Please contact me, it would be easier for him to explain in person about the problem.
When i am driving on city streets and am behind a car that is turning i have to slow down. When i give it gas at around 2k rpm. The car has some hesitation like it cant find a gear to be in. It has done it seance about 100 miles. Has 7000 miles on it now. Was told it was the transmission trying to find its shift points as you break it in at 1000 miles.(berger chevy)also when in garage and start car it sounds fine. But once i put it in rev. I hear lost lot pings coming from the engine area. Started after deer crash. Took to berger chevy where car was bought. They found nothing but just body damage. Hood, front end, and passage side all replace. With 600 miles on car.
On or around december, 2014, the shift cover would not attach permanently.on or around march 10, 2014, the electrical access plug did not operate.on or around march 6, 2014, my mother was driving around 45mph, and we hit an elk.no airbags deployed.
The button to release the car out of gear, and once in park that releases the key came apart.it has been sticking for awhile then all of a sudden, something sharp started poking out of the bottom of the button, and it has cut my husband's hand.now the button barely pushes in and the car is very hard to get out of park.
My car keeps shutting completely off even while driving, the radio come on and off by itself and no one can tell me why, this is very dangerous i be driving with my children in the vehicle and the car shuts off while driving in traffic
A bad smell like rotten eggs, keeps coming out of the ac/c vents and the engine of the car. I changed the air filter and everything but nothing happen the smell does not go away.
My mother stated that she was sitting still at a red light waiting for it to turn green when out of no where the engine revved up and the car lunged forward causing her to strike the car that was in front of her. She managed to steering around that car and bring the car to a stop. She and my sister told me this is not the first time this has happened. Both times the car was standing still and her feet were on the brakes.updated 06/03/14
For 2 months my check emissions light was coming on and going off. According to my owners manual the gas cap or air filter need fixing. I went to autozone to get a free diagnostics reading. At the end of august my car started to hesitate , won't accelerate at take off. Then started heavy jerking at take off and when sitting still. I bought some liquid and changed air filter, same results. I called chevy dealer to have car checked under my powertrain and my emissions warranty. I have been trying to get help so i could get my car checked next friday on the 23rd.to have them look at my car. But on the 16th of october i'm leaving work i backed out of stall and pulled forward car was dragging roughly. I was waiting to pull out in traffic when car started jutting forward. I press on the gas went forward about 5 to 8 feet and then nothing. I was stuck inmid traffic. The reverse worked so i was able to roll out harms way.
My car was losing speed even upon pressing the gas, in the middle of traffic the rpm's went all the way to 7 and then i let off the gas and they went all the way down. Then it finally started regain speed. Now the check engine light is on and the code was pertaining to the fuel system , i am very furious due to the fact that me and my children ride in this car daily and this happened i understand people make mistakes but i would greatly appreciate a call in this matter because i have called the toll free number twice and they are giving me no information as far as who i can reach out to get this fixed before there is something bad to happen. I don't pay for something to put mine and my children's life in danger. Weather or not this is a recall it needs to be fixed by the people who made it .thanks [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact attempted to notify the dealer and manufacturer about having the vehicle repaired according to nhtsa campaign number: 14v315000 (power train: automatic transmission), but was unsuccessful. The contact also heard a popping noise coming from the steering wheel and noticed a strong persistent odor of fuel coming through the ventilation system. The dealer stated that the steering column, fuel pump, and caliper pins needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failures recurred. The failure mileage was 11,000.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While driving 55 mph, the front end of the vehicle began to jerk and the traction control and check engine lights appeared. The vehicle stalled and was coasted over to the side of the road. The dealer diagnosed that the fuel module failed. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 63,000.
On june 19, 2013, after picking up my 5 yr old grandson from summer camp, we were on our way to the park. I am driving approximately 45 mph and all of a sudden, my grandson opens the door! while the locks engage when put into gear, he was able to open the door! needless to say, i flipped out! that's not supposed to happen! my doors are supposed to be locked!!! i find this very dangerous and unsafe for anyone, any age! my car does have child locks, but why should i have to turn them on every time someone gets in my car when my locks automatically engage when put in gear!!!!!?????????? chevrolet has always been my favorite make of a vehicle and that is why i chose to buy one. Plus, the sonic was a wise choice for me at the time because i was driving 60-75 miles a day back and forth to work and home. Then more traveling on the weekends to mobile, al to visit family. After that incident, please mark my word, that i will never buy another chevy again, and i will make sure that no one else does as well. I will contact my local news station and hire an attorney, if i have to,make chevy improve my vehicle or give me something else that is safer for my family! what if something were to happen to my grandson? then what? what if it were you and your grandbaby or son or daughter? you best better believe that you would have the biggest lawsuit on your hands that you've ever had to witness!!! and i guarantee that you still will have one, if they don?t make this right! i am not asking for money (that?s not what i?m about), but simply another vehicle that is safer than the chevy sonic and to make all chevy sonics safer!!!! i am appalled that chevy would make a vehicle that is so unsafe!
After only owning the 2012 sonic for less than 4 months and having only @ 3,700 miles on it, i have a problem with the transmission. I pulled out of my work driveway, and the engine was racing in drive but going nowhere. It was moving forward very slowly and not shifting. I eventually was able to get almost off the road, but my back end was sticking out into a major thoroughfare because it completely quit going forward .i put the car in park and back into drive to try to get it to move forward again. At that point, whether in drive, neutral, m1, etc, it was in reverse, so essentially the car ended up being even further sticking out in the busy road. I had to wait for a quick break in traffic and drive it in reverse the wrong way into a parking lot to get towed.dealership replaced solenoid pack but was not the problem. They tore transmission down and found it was a torn belt on the clutch fan, so they think. As of today, still fighting with general motors for a new transmission. They just want to fix it and extend warranty. I think that's unacceptable for a car with 3,700 miles on it .it's a shame gm won't stand up to their product. Starting to feel this car was not a safe choice. Seems to be a lot of complaints on the power train, especially shifting issues.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While driving various speeds, the vehicle failed to shift gears when prompted. The contact stated that the vehicle remained stuck in first gear. In addition, the vehicle stalled on more than one occasion. Mike maroone chevrolet south in colorado springs, colorado was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 36,000.

The automatic shifting from 1st to 3rd gear completely skips around.the car shifts are hard to the point, once you come to a stop it feels like the transmission is going to fall out.
The clean air hose from the throttle body to the clean air hose split at the convolutes causing an unregulated air / fuel ratio and lack of power due to the engine running lean. Potential safety issue if accelerating. Mileage at the time of failure 77,791 kilometers (48,230 miles)
Shifter button is sticking (will not release) which prevents removal of the key from the ignition. Also, could allow the the vehicle to be shifted into other gears (park, reverse, etc) while in motion.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. On several occasions, the gear shifter failed to operate. The contact stated that the shifter button would depress, but not release. As a result, the vehicle failed to shift gears and the key became difficult to remove from the ignition until the shifter button was released. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the shifter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The contact mentioned that he previously had the shifter replaced twice; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but did not offer any assistance. The failure mileage was 52,956.
I have a 2012 chevy sonic and the gearshift will not lock into place and an accidental bump will knock the car into another gear which could be dangerous to me and others. Reading online threads, i have noticed that this affecting many other cars of this make and model. I notice that gm wait until the last minute to issue recalls. I just hope that it is not to late for me and my family.
Transmission will not shift into reverse or shift out of 2nd gear
Button on shifter knob that allows car to be put into gear gets stuck and eventually breaks. This allows the car to accidentally be put into gear. This problem also does not allow you to remove your key from the ignition, forcing you to leave your key in the ignition if you want to leave the vehicle.
The button that is depressed to put the car in and out of gear sticks in place, allowing for the gear shift to be pushed out of place. I have had trouble numerous times getting my car into park because the stuck button causes the gear shift to get caught in reverse, and today i accidentally pushed the gear shift into neutral while sitting at a red light.
When i place the car in park the gear shift will not completely release or register the car is in park. My key will not release, and i have to place the car in drive then park several times before the key will release.
The button on my gear shift is sticking. Whenever i shift gears the button sticks. Sometimes it will stick the whole time i am driving and other times it will only stick for a minute or two. What deeply concerns me is when i park i cannot remove my keys or turn my car fully off until the button to return to a relaxed state. Sometimes i will have to sit in my car for a half an hour waiting for the button to come out of the gear shift. This has been happening for the past month.
Vehicle has no power on acceleration so i lose power in intersections and on the highway.
After disengaging, engaging, and then disengaging the clutch to place the vehicle in reverse the transmission grinds.
While driving on highway the transmission made a noise and just stopped. It is exactly what the recall states!i could have written it myself.thankfully, got over to the side of the road without incident.gm states this vin is not part of the recall.certified chevrolet dealer's "diagnostic" is "black fluid with metal in it" (more of an observation) and they will not take transmission apart to determine if it was indeed the turbine shaft fracture.of course, they just want to put in a new one at my expense.gm should want to know if there are more sonics with this issue to extend the recall and keep people safe!!
I can be driving my car normal when out of nowhere it almost completely loses power in the middle of the road (to the point it is very dangerous to be driving). The tcs light will illuminate as well as the check engine light with 2 codes. I was in traffic and my car literally would not pick up speed/accelerate (even with pedal all the way to floor). This is a very scary situation that should not be happening with a car that isn't even that old and only just hit 60,000 miles. I'm guessimg on the first date i noticed the issue, and it happened again on september 29, 2017. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle i have invested in and feel my tranny should have been one included in the recall, especially with it failing before 60,000 miles. Please help.
Gear shift gets stuck - unable to take key out, difficult to shift gears.
2012 chevrolet sonic.consumer writes in regards to recalls and vehicle repairs issues.the consumer stated the check engine light illuminated. The knock sensor and lower transmission mount were replaced.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While attempting to park, the shifter could not be switched to park. In addition, when in park, the vehicle failed to shift into drive or reverse. The failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 37,000.
My car jerks when it downshifts. It's been doing this about a year after i got it. Got it checked out at the dealership and they said it's not a problem. Fast forward...it's worse. The car jerks in second and first downshifting. Doesn't matter if i'm driving on the interstate or city street.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While driving 30 mph, the vehicle stalled and the check engine indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the turbine shaft malfunctioned, which caused the vehicle to remain in third gear. The dealer stated that the turbine shaft needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing or repairs. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 134,000.
The console gear shift has a button that must be depressed to shift. Button sticks in depressed position. Cannot remove keys in park position. The button broke i had to replace the whole console gear shift and have it installed. There needs to be a recall on this issue.
My 2012 chevrolet sonic lt sedan has harsh shifting and feels like it is downshifting when it is not suppose to be while in motion
The car got stuck in 1 gear while driving on a highway and then would not go in reverse. Took it to the garage and was told the transmission wave plate has broken. This car has only 70,598 miles on it. Has been serviced regularly. I did a quick google search and this is a huge problem with these models! there was a recall for the same problem but doesn't include my vehicle. Https://m.carcomplaints.com/chevrolet/sonic/2012/transmission/bad_transmission.shtml
The chevrolet sonic that we had started having trouble shifting out of the first and second gears around 9000 miles. It is a brand new car with an automatic transmission. In mid june of 2012 we started noticing that the when the transmission went to shift to a higher gear it would stick, then shift hard, thus causing the vehicle to lurch forward. On june 25, 2012 we were driving it home when again the problem shifting started again. This time however, the transmission stuck in second gear and would not shift up or down. The car had to be towed to the dealership we purchased it from and it took two weeks to repair. The technicians told us that there was faulty control link out and replaced it. They test drove it and it still didn't fix the problem. The tech's determined thatreplacement part was faulty and replaced it with another one. After this the car was given back to us. The car performed well until september 2012 when it started doing the same thing again. When approaching speeds of 17 to 18 miles per hour, the transmission will attempt to shift, get stuck and jerk forward. It eventually shifts but not easily. The rpms when it does this is approximately 3500 rpms. It also gets stuck when there is a little more torque needed around 25 to 28 miles per hours. This is what concerns me as a driver is that when it does it at this speed, the rpms are 5500 to 6000 and when it gets stuck and cant shift, the rpms will actually red line or reach 7000 rpm. My wife and i again took the car to the same dealership who said that since there is no error code or fault code they are consulting the engineers and technicians from general motors. They have been unable to determine that cause only that it is an internal problem with the transmission.
When placing the car in park the gear shifter button gets stuck and doesn't disengage. Since it doesn't disengage the keys can't be removed from the car. If the car is placed in reverse or drive the button stays stuck causing the shifter to be engaged and able to freely shift into reverse or park while driving. This has happened on several occasion and most often in colder temperatures.
2012 chevrolet sonic.attorney representing consumer writes in regards to parts not available to complete recall.the dealer kept the vehicle for 18 days without performing any work.recall # 14v315000.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While accelerating from a stop, the vehicle failed to exceed 10 mph. The contact was three miles away from her destination with the accelerator pedal depressed to the floorboard. Each time the vehicle came to a stop, the failure recurred. In addition, the gear was not shifting and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the vehicle was losing transmission fluid. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact called chevrolet of columbus (2825 merchant mile, columbus, in 47201, (812) m308-4380) and was informed that the vehicle was not included in a recall. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000.
The gear shift button was locked in park and i could not release the key from the steering column. After researching on the internet, advice said to push hard to the left on the gear shift to pop the button back out. I did that while jostling the button and it did pop out. When i pressed the button again, this time in neutral, the button got stuck within the gear shift column again, but i found that i could then just push the gear shift forward and back between gears without the button locking on the desired gear. This is a major safety issue because it appeared to me that if i were driving, the gear shift column could move to another gear if i hit a pot hole or bump, without me controlling it. In other words, it might have slipped into neutral or reverse. Shouldn't there be a recall on this? i have to take it to the dealer wednesday, and if this happens again, i will have to drive the trip with my hand on the gear shift knob to insure it will not slip out of gear.
Button on the shifter occasionally sticks.when it happens you cannot get your key out and you can easily accidentally go into reverse. After checking online i've come across several people with the same problem.this is definitely a safety hazard
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that the vehicle was serviced at van buick gmc (8585 e. Frank lloyd wright blvd, scottsdale, az 85260) for a serpentine and timing belt replacement. After retrieving the vehicle from the dealer, the contact was driving at 55-60 mph, the vehicle decelerated independently. The check engine and drive warning lights were illuminated on the instrument panel and automatically shifted from drive to first gear inadvertently. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who informed the contact that the failure was transmission related. The vehicle remained at the dealer unrepaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the vin was not under recall. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 14v315000 (power train) however, the vin was not included. The approximate failure mileage was 127,000. *dt
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that there was a strong hesitation when the vehicle was in first and second gear, as well as when the vehicle was in motion. The vehicle jerked excessively without warning. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v315000 (power train). The vehicle was not diagnosed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available. Updated 01/11/2017*ct updated 7/13/18
The shift lever button will not release when in park, so the vehicle doesnt not read that its firmly in park; the key wont release and i cannot turn off the vehicle until the button unjams itself or i lubricate it to do so. This has been happening frequently. The only fix is replacing the entire shift lever, which is upwards of $300
Automatic gear shift button sticks. Shift lever can move from drive to neutral to reverse to park without locking as the button is stuck depressed. Keys cannot be removed when car is in park. Stationary and in motion. Multiple times. Situation is getting progressively worse, i.e. Button is sticking more frequently.
Automatic shifter button sticks which doesn't let the key to come out. It's very dangerous driving while the button is stuck in. You can bump the shifter n it'll take it out of gear due to the shifter button sticking n not popping out.
The transmission began to jolt, thud, and otherwise not shift. Leaving me extremely slow in high traffic. The selling dealership refused to replace thevehicle. Gm refused to replace the vehicle. I contacted another chevy dealership they noted debris in the transmission and a faulty cam phaser (transmission) and the repair may not correct this.
I took my 2012 chevy sonic lt6 speed manual to repair shop to have multiple repairs done. When shop installed clutch assembly they used all new oem clutch parts and had a clutch hydraulic slave cylinder, over extend and blow out seal, leaking brake fluid. ( about march 26th 2015.)issue was narrowed down to possible binding or blockage of slave cylinder function, during install or after.after several slave cylinder failures i contacted general manager at dealership who past matter to service manager and he looked up in system for bleeding instructions and found them to be as gm repair manual stated, correctly being done. He then said he would check the pi or engineering service bulletins. He found exact bulletin #pi0421dexplaining same events and gave me a copy to pass on to shop.now after reading report, the problem is clear but out of date slave cylinders were still being sold as replacement part.after i received original bleeder valve from shop i cut top in two pieces to inspect and verify issue.i found that the original slave cylinder left behind in bleeder valve, a rubber seal "as described in bulletin". Newest updated slave cylinder available has a hard plastic seal that doesn't seem removable.currently, it seems that this is covered under a bumper to bumper warranty but my car is far from coverage. Coverage not likely unless, car came in with related symptoms that lead to issue.my biggest concern is that this bulletin is not being updated to a recall. Bulletin states clearly that slave can and has failed (as it did on shops, 3rd attempt) after install, within 1,000 miles.safety issue: is that if clutch slave fails during operation, clutch failure will cause car to be stuck in current gear or unable to be put back in gear. This can cause an accident and cost, loss of life. This may have already happened but needs to be investigated.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that while driving at an undisclosed speed, the transmission ceased in 2nd gear. The vehicle was towed to the an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the transmission was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. Don brown located at 2244 s. Kings highway blvd, st. Louis, mo 63110, and the manufacturer were notified of the failure but no assistance was offered. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced the failure stated in nhtsa campaign number: 14v315000 (power train) however, the vin was not included. The failure mileage was 56,000. *as
Automatic shifter release button sticking you can not get the car to go into park to shut off car also it stays depressed causing you to be able to easly hit the shifter into neuteral or reverse while driving
This vehicle is very dangerous and unsafe and needs to be recalled. I was going to make a right turn out of a red light numerous amounts of times and when going to speed up to make a right turn the vehicle would get stuck or stall out and not speed up. I almost got hit by larger vehicles four times now because it stalls out when going to accelerate. I have talked to four other people with this vehicle and they said they have the same problems!
There is a button on the transmission gear selector that allows the selector to move from park to the driving gears. On my car the button is now sticking in (will not release) this cause the gear selector to move freely from one gear to another such as drive to reverse ect also as this in in the in or engaged position the key cannot be removed. This is a safety issue as the car can be placed into reverse and or drive just by touching the gear selector
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While in park, the gear shifter failed to shift. The contact had to force the gear shifter into the drive position. While driving 55 mph, the gear shifter became stuck and had to be forced again. The vehicle has not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The vin was unknown. The failure mileage was 48,500.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that the gear shift failed to engage in the park position without warning. As a result, the gear shift switched back into reverse and the vehicle rolled independently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 58,000.
2012 chevy sonic only has 39k miles and the transmission is kicking in reverse and in drive .while coming out of park.
My trans will not shift passed 3rd.
Pulled into my work parking lot and gear shifter would not shift into park. After trying multiple times and beating on it i finally got it into park but key would not turn off or come out of ignition. Put back into drive and went through all gears (neutral, reverse and drive) before i could finally put it in park and turn off the key and take key out of ignition. Happened again the following week, had it towed to dealer. The tow truck driver had never seen anything like it. He could not tow it without getting it into neutral. They had to break the shifter in order for me to drive it until the new shifter came in. Dealer would not replace without charge. So, i will probably have to replace the shifter every three years to the tune of $400.00.also, air intake hose has broken and check engine light comes on and off. Can only order through dealer. Duck taped it until you recall it for engineering design defect. I should not have to replace this hose every three years.
The button to release the car out of gear, and once in park that releases the key came apart.it has been sticking for awhile then all of a sudden, something sharp started poking out of the bottom of the button, and it has cut my husband's hand.now the button barely pushes in and the car is very hard to get out of park.
I purchase my car march 2012. Had have been taking it to dealer about the washer fluid not staying in bottle. They told me nothing was wrong. Then took it again for transmission slipping into gear they said again nothing was wrong. Now the transmission is not working and they say the recall is not for my car cause there website says so.it stopped moving on the highway with me having a 2year old in back seat. I finally got my fluid to stay in bottle by some other mechanic.
2012 chevrolet sonic. Consumer writes to express a complaint concerning the service received for a safety recall. *tgwthe consumer was informed, the parts needed to be ordered. Recall # 14v315000. The consumer stated the repairs were done. However, eight days was too long to have the vehicle, when the recall stated it would take 10 hours and 20 minutes. Updated 12/10/14
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that while driving various speeds, the vehicle would not shift to the correct gear causing the engine rpm to suddenly increase. Also, the contact mentioned that when the vehicle would come to a stop, the vehicle would accelerate independently. The vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v315000 (power train). However, the vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 20,000.
Transmission shifts hard and now it will not go in reverse and will not shift out of 1st. Engine revs but car doesn't move
Shifter button gets stuck and can't take key out of ignition! its been replaced before and this is the second time!dealer wont replace under warranty!
Automatic shift button gets stuck causing the ability for the vehicle to accidentally come out of gear. When the shift button is stuck in, i then need to pry the shift button out to put it into park in order to remove the key. We have been driving the car for a couple of years thinking it is not a big deal to pry the button out (rather than pay $400 to get it fixed), until we figured out that when the button is stuck in, it can easily be bumped into different gears by accident.
When trying to cross a busy intersection, i had no power when i pressed on the gas pedal.the engine just revved.we slowly moved forward and were very nearly hit by both sides of oncoming traffic.i was able to pull over and put on flashers.i drove on the side of road until the gears engaged a few seconds later.ever since i still have issues merging on highways on in traffic.
Have been having bad issues with fear selector button sticking, and it affects the selector slipping into other gears as it cannot lock.
At 94000 miles the car stopped shifting period. It would start and then go nowhere not forwards backwards nothing. Thank the lord i was parked at my house and it was a sudden occurrence. I only financed this car in the end of february at 89300 miles from carmax and still owe money for it. That is insane.
While engaging the shifter assembly into gear, the button on the assembly becomes stuck.the car can then be moved from park into any gear by accident.also causing the key to be stuck inside the ignition of the vehicle.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While driving approximately 65 mph with the gear shifter in drive, the transmission downshifted into second gear. The vehicle then decelerated to 30 mph, jerked back and forth with a loud unknown noise, and then went into idle mode. The contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic (lowell automatic transmission in ma), where it was diagnosed that the turbine fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was later towed to the dealer (lannan chevrolet located at 831 rogers st, lowell ma, 01852) where it was diagnosed that the transmission shaft failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v315000 (power train). The approximate failure mileage was 125,000.
Transmission recall14v315000. My son and wife were driving in freeway traffic when suddenly, the vehicle lost speed and would not shift into third or higher gears. The vehicle speed was limited to about 25-35mph. It was a very frightening experience which could have caused a crash as my son was trying to weave out of high speed freeway traffic.the failure is related to a broken wave plate in the transmission which prevents 3-6 gears from engaging. The symptoms experienced are very similar to a recall gm has on some 2012 sonics where the vehicle has limited speed and won't shift past 3 gear. Research reveals there are hundreds, if not thousands of these transmissions with the wave plates breaking and posing a safety concern.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While attempting to back out of a parking space, the vehicle failed to shift into reverse. Additionally, the vehicle would vibrate abnormally while driving. The contact stated that the transmission failed to shift gears as intended. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.
My chevrolet sonic has developed an issue where the automatic transmission shift lever button is sticking in the 'in' position. In this position, the transmission gears can be changed without touching the button is such a fashion as to move the transmission from park to reverse, neutral, drive and in this module it has a so called manual mode. So one could bump the gear from reverse to drive or from drive to reverse just by touching the gear shifter. Of course, with this button in the in position you cannot remove the key out of the ignition. I feel this is a safety issue and thus reporting it as such. This issue can happen both driving and before driving. As it is not safe to drive the car this way i will be taking this in to a chevrolet dealer to be fixed.
In 2014 the shift gear was replaced due to a recall. It hasn't been 3yrs, and the shift gear is damaged again.when i shift gear from park the release button stays stuck, posing a safety hazard, if by accident the shift gets pushed while the car is on drive.upon parking the car, the release button stays stuck and the keys will not come off until that button is release.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to shift out of second gear. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (shearer chevrolet buick gmc cadillac, 1675 shelburne rd, south burlington, vt 05403, (802) 658-1111) where it was diagnosed that the transmission turbine shaft malfunctioned. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and stated that the warranty was expired. The failure mileage was 120,000.
Gear shift release button has been slow to release for some time and recently cracked in half. That left me unable to shift gears out of park. I repaired with glue temporarily but would like a permanent solution from the manufacturer.
While driving the car on designated truck route street -speed limit was 45 mph -the transmission would not up-shift to the third through sixth gears, limiting the vehicle's speed causing a unsafe speed reduction. After finally pulling the car over out of traffic and parking the car it would not go into reverse and all four wheels to locked. Car had to be towed to dealer where they had to replace the entire transmission with only 56,935 miles on the car .
I owned my 2012 chevy sonic lt for exactly 8 years, with only 81.3k miles on it. After about 2016, ironically, when it was paid off, it started to 'nickel & dime' me; with everything from electrical issues, to battery replacement several times, it seemed iwas constantly taking it to the shop. I was always very timely with regular oil changes and maintenance but regardless, unbeknownst to me, the 2012 models of the sonic have transmission/power train issues that the manufacturer made sure were addressed in the 2013 models but failed to recall or pay for the faulty transmission for the 2012 models. I had no indication my transmission would fail on me so suddenly. On sept. 14th, 2020, i was backing out of my driveway, and when i started down my street, i noticed my car wasn't accelerating properly. I thought it was my imagination at first, but it continued getting worse to the point where a high-pitched whine started and i immediately pulled over - my check engine light came on at that time also - and that was the beginning of the end. I had my car towed to my auto shop and they wrote me a quote for $5200 to have my transmission completely replaced. It was then they told me about the 2012 sonic faulty power train issues. I think it's completely unethical to not address a known issue that could've been taken care of by the company since it was the first year the car was sold, it should be their duty. I had no choice but to sell the car for parts as it wasn't worth the resale value with such a major issue.
During the last week had problems with the key not releasing from steering column. The last two days gear shifter getting very hard to shift and button sticks and key will not release, and wheels will not lock. Have had to leave the key in car which is not a very safe thing to do. Have noticed today that the button after awhile will pop out and then the key will release. This is a safety issue and needs to be recalled before things get worse which apparently is going to happen..
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact heard an abnormal noise coming from the transmission and it became harder to shift gears. The dealer replaced the cabin filter; however, the vehicle would not shift out of third gear. The failure was not corrected and the manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 37,000.
Vehicle had difficulty accelerating, was using 6000 rpms but only going 30 mph, felt like the car was stuck in 2nd gear. Car lost ability to go in reverse.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While stopped at a red light and attempting to proceed through a green light, the vehicle failed to shift into second gear and the rpms rapidly increased without warning. The contact stopped the vehicle, powered it off and back on, and the vehicle was able to be driven; however, it was difficult to shift the vehicle into second gear. The failure recurred on several occasions. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 1,663.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that while his daughter was driving 55 mph, the vehicle independently downshifted into second gear as the d on the transmission indicator began to flash on the instrument panel. Due to the failure, his daughter immediately pulled over and called the contact. Upon arriving at the scene, the contact stated that the vehicle would not move forward when placed in drive. The contact drove the vehicle to his home in reverse. The contact called autonation chevrolet west amarillo (7300 i-40, amarillo, tx 79106) and was informed that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v315000 (power train). The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and informed the contact that he had to pay out of pocket for any repairs to the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 130,000.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While attempting to shift, the gear became stuck intermittently. In addition, the washer fluid was not operating on the windshield. The contact had to constantly add wiper fluid to the washer hose. The dealer could not determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. A month later, the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the cause of the failure was undetermined. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 12v408000 (visibility). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that the button on the gear shifter seized. As a result, the shift lever became lodged in one gear. The failure recurred daily and no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer. The technician diagnosed that the entire gear shifter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the issue. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
When car is placed in park, ignition key cannot be removed.
The transmission failed while driving in suburban setting causing a serious safety issue.thevehicle only has 49,000 miles on it.this model and model year has been recalled for a similar transmission issue, but the manufacturer claims that my particular car is not part of it despite have the same issue as the recall.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that the transmission became difficult to shift and hesitated to respond. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the technician diagnosed that the turbo transmission needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired however, the problem persisted. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the technician stated that the valve, transmission fluid and a gasket needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the problem recurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer a third time but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 34,000.
Starting in november 2016 the gear shift button began sticking a little on the cold days. A month later i was unable to take the key out of the ignition and couldn't get the button to pop back out until the car was warm. Wd-40 helped temporarily and then my mechanic cleaned it and use silicone. It was better but still sticky. No issues during spring, summer and fall but it started as soon as the cold weather hit. If i am in the car long enough it isn't a problem but short trips on cold days mean i have to use a card to pry the button out. Only once has it caused a problem while driving when it too easily slid from d into m1. I dropped my car off to have the gear shifter replaced. The part is about $150. I don't know how much labor will be and i havent been under warranty for years.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. After stopping the vehicle, it would not accelerate forward and the transmission would get stuck in third gear. Starting march 28, 2015, while parked in several public and private parking area's, the key could not be removed from the ignition for from 20 minutes to several hours.on april 1, 2015, the dealer, seth wadley, identified the problem as "55729 found shifter to be binding internally".they explained that the button that releases the automatic gear shift was getting stuck.this kept the key from being released from the ignition.while waiting for the problem to be evaluated, the car had to be left, unlocked with the keys in the ignition, in several private and public parking areas where children could have taken the car.the gear shifter would not lock into park while the button was stuck.i have the shifter that was replaced for $448.49 on april 3, 2015, and will provide it at your request.attached are photos of the invoice and the old shifter.
Fault code. P0011?

The vehicle was not repaired.the failure mileage was 925 and the current mileage was 1041.updated 04/25/12*ljthe consumer stated the transmission would not shift into gear. Updated 04/30/12
Was driving and car stopped accelerating...had just enough power to coast out of traffic...car was running but would not move forward or reverse. Did exactly what the recall statedif the transmission turbine shaft fracture occurs during vehicle operation in the first or second gear, the vehicle will not upshift to the third thru sixth gears limiting the vehicles speed...
Shift gear cracked about a month ago...two months ago keys broke, today sitting at stop light couldn't get car into gear.every gear went to reverse. Had to have cake towed.
Know to shift gears has a button your press to change gears. At around 44000 miles it gets stuck everyday. It pops back out eventually, but it's a dangerous hazard. Surprise it hasn't been recalled yet, with the many complaints i have seen.
2012 chevrolet sonic: gear shift button stuck in depressed position, preventing removal of the key from ignition when in park position and allows the shifter to shift between gears and park positions with little-to-no intervention. Inability disengage button and to remove the key from the ignition also creates inability to securely park the vehicle and turn the vehicle off.the failure to disengage was first expressed intermittently, with a failure occurrence rate of 20%-30% (with the initial failure mileage approximately 45,000 miles). Within 3 months, the failure occurrence rate increased to 100%. The vehicle was diagnosed as "internal fault of shifter and knob assembly," with recommendation to "replace shifter assembly and shifter knob" (with labor + parts quote at $406.00 usd). The vehicle was not repaired. Diagnosis identified as a serious safety concern, with request made to issue recall.
While driving my car, the car looses power and began to stall. I've went to two chevy dealerships and two repair and no one is able to tell me what's the problem
Transmission fractured
Car started misfiring when accelerating and would jerk and be very rough when idling but no engine light. Full tune up found that open valve cover gasket was damaged and that seals were plastic when they should've been rubber, this caused oil to enter the spark plug wells. Changed gasket and seals but problem persisted. Took to the dealership and was told that ignition switch in cylinder 1 was bad, this corrected the issue but now car has burning smell at times.
My car hesitates to shift gears between 18-27 mph and sometimes when i make a right hand turn going down an incline the car acts like its not in gear to drive.
Car has 52,000 miles, and the transmission blew.
During stop-and-go city traffic, the car will struggle to change gears, and has (between 5-10 times) "stopped responding," meaning that the car is unresponsive to pressing the brake or gas, although the electrical system continues to run. The only solution we have found to this is putting the car in park, turning it off, and turning it back on again, but this is very scary in the middle of traffic. This happened most recently on 5/8/21 but has happened at least 5 times in the past 18 months.
On or around december, 2014, the shift cover would not attach permanently.on or around march 10, 2014, the electrical access plug did not operate.on or around march 6, 2014, my mother was driving around 45mph, and we hit an elk.no airbags deployed.
The shifter mechanism gets stuck & the car cannot be put into drive. This happens many times-especially during the colder months, when the car cannot be shifted into drive & i am left stranded in extremely cold weather. Additionally, gm refuses to admit the shifter is defective & refuses to buy the car back, as i am just a student in college working a part-time job. I bought this car because i needed a dependable car to get me back & fourth to college & my part-time job...because of the cars defects, i am often late for school & or work.plus, my sister also has a chevy 2006 aveo she was given, but this car also has the very same issue's with the shifter...therefore, when gm ceo [xxx]testifies before congress and tells congress that gm is not hiding or covering-up any additional car problems...she is a liar & i am stuck with this pretty much useless car, that gm has my money & i don't have a dependable car & i/we are willing to offer both cars so that an independent expert mechanic can evaluate both cars to prove that gm indeed knew about these shifter mechanism defects going back to at least 2006 aveo model, butcontinued to sell these time-bombs to the young adults of this country, who are scrapping by to make ends-meat & try to get an education...then we buy a car from an arrogant, ruthless, evil, lying company & we have nowhere to turn...i tired an nj lemon law attorney, but i determined that he was actually i bed with gm & the other gm attorney.i want gm to take this car back, as i wouldn't sell it to my worst enemy, as that is not the right thing to do. I want gm to step-up to the plate & refund all my money so that i can go out & buy a dependable car from a reputable car company.my dad, [xxx] , is also helping me with this mess.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Gear shift knob sticks preventing removal of key.2. Gear shift knob will not return to normal position preventing steering wheel to lock when vehicle is unoccupied, this seems to be common problem with this vehicle.there are many complaints of similar nature on web forums.
Onceagain my check engine light is on.i have had this car since 2013 with 16000 miles on it.the first time the check engine light came on the dealership try to tell me it was the gas i was using.come to find out it was the air intake hose was cracked....that was a little over a year ago and now it is on again!!!the first it was barely covered under warranty, i dont think it will this time.i am pissed.....i paid 17000 for this car and have had in the shop so many times it isnt even funny.i even had it in for the sway bar link that was broke which shouldnt have been at 42000 miles.
The shift knob button is sticking. I cannot remove the key from the vehicle. More importantly the car is never fully in park. This is a major safety issue. I took it to the dealership i purchased the car from immediately. He said the car was out of warranty and that was not a recall. There should be a recall as soon as possible.
In the summer of 2017 the check engine light came on in my sonic and the car would not accelerate. It would even happen at red lights when i would come to a complete stop. After turning the car off and having it sit for a few seconds, it seemed to be fine. In september 2017, it was unable to pass inspection because of this. I was told it was a problem with a hose in my engine and had it replaced. The car ran fine during the winter. In spring of 2018, when the weather started to change, the issue of the car stopping and failing to accelerate came back and began to occur. It is the same issue that i was having before and i am very concerned about this in terms of safety. I have attached a copy of the service expaination and receipt.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. When pressing the shift gear button to switch between gears, the button would become stuck and remain depressed. As a result, the shifter would inadvertently change the transmission from drive to reverse, neutral, or park, when accidentally bumped. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The local dealer (penny kemp chevrolet in evansville, in) was notified of the failure. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 50,000.
The heated seats stoped heating at 90k milestransmission went out at 107k mikes
The shifter button/knob always gets stuck. This vehicle has an automatic transmission so it wasn't included in the prior recall regarding the shifter. The car radio turns on by itself after i have removed by car key and locked the doors. This has caused the battery to drain and now it needs to be replaced. Chevy dealer said that replacing the shifter "may" correct the issue with the radio. I would like to know why the shifter needs to be replaced after only 2 years of use. I have had much older cars with far less issues and never needed to have a shifter replaced. It appears to be a defect that they have not recalled yet.
(automatic transmission) button on gear shift gets stuck in engage. Allows free shifting from park to any gear without the brake pedal being pressed. May easily be bumped into neutral, drive, reverse, or manual with just a touch. Also applies if in drive or any other gear which may result in loss of control if it should accidentally be bumped. When this occurs, it is not possible to remove the key from the ignition.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While driving approximately 20 mph and depressing the accelerator pedal, the vehicle failed to respond without warning. The contact pulled over and powered the vehicle off and back on; however, the failure persisted. The contact continued to depress the accelerator pedal. The vehicle eventually shifted into the next gear. The failure recurred on several occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was not diagnosed. The contact was informed that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v315000 (power train). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.
Gear shift button got stuck in down position and would not disengage when gear shift was in placed in park. The car could not be completely turned off and the key could not be removed from the ignition. The incident happened three days after the warranty expired on the car. The gear shift had to be replaced at a cost of $450.

Seat belt tensioner cables frayed and broke off
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that the seat belt latch that attaches the seat belt to the vehicle seat fractured on the driver side and became detached. The contact stated that the passenger side seat belt experienced the same fracture. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the seat belt needed to be replaced. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle would be repaired. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 145,573.

While driving 60 mph, the vehicle accelerated independently without warning. The driver depressed the brake pedal, but the vehicle failed to decelerate. In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle started to lose power and the driver was able to coast to the side of the road. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 47,000.
Rear noise coming from the brake area. Gm told me they have to re-design the rear brake drums, they wouldn't give me a fix date and wouldn't say if it was a safety problem.noise is getting louder.gm produced a document #3213219nov 2012 saying they were working on the problem and didn't see it as a safety issue.
I was driving down the street (straight and flat, no turns or hills) at 25 mph and went to use my brakes.to my surprise there was no power assist.the car only has 48k miles on it and had never displayed braking problems prior to this incident.the car did not have issues at the stop sign just a block before.as it happened a few blocks from my house, i drove it home and parked it.besides the lack of power assist, the motor started to idle rough-- it would surge to 2500 rpm and then slow down to 700 rpm, all with no throttle input.when i popped the hood, to look for an obvious loose hose, i did not see anything that looked out of the norm.however, there was quite a bit more noise than normal-- it was a combination of hissing and whirring.not the normal sound the engine would make while running with the hood open.there were some noises coming from the brake booster area (driver's side by the firewall) that i had never heard prior to that day.the car has a 1.8 four cylinder and a 5 speed manual.the issues did not impact the clutch pedal in any way, so i doubt it is the master cylinder.as i noted it seems to be a brake booster issue... However, i have not been able to get it to a garage yet as the issue just happened.(i am no mechanic, but have a decent understanding of how cars work.)either way, it was quite a surprise.while i am a male in good physical shape, even i needed to stand on the brakes to get the car to slow down from only 25 mph-- had i been going faster, i would have likely needed to use the e-brake to slow the car.again, at this time the car has not been repaired, but the issue happened just yesterday.for what it is worth, the temperature was cold at the time of the incident (15 f), but there was no snow or ice on the road, and it was sunny out.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that the brake pedal stuck to the floor board, while attempting to slow down and driving at 65 mph. As a result, the contact crashed into a guard rail. The vehicle was towed to a dealer but was not diagnosed or repaired. A police report was filed and there were no injuries reported. The approximate failure mileage was 35,500. Updated 03/09/16*lj
My 2012 chevrolet sonic was involved in an automobile accident resulting in injury to me because my airbags did not deploy. When i am slowing and there is a grate in the street, my vehicle has problems braking.this has happened numerous times every time i am on a grate, which is fairly common in the city.i told [xxx] and they advised me that there was nothing wrong with the brakes (they were doing an oil change and said they checked the brakes).when i drive over ice, it makes a loud noise and there appears to be a problem braking.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).*dt.....updated 02/10/16

Takata recalli was driving and i tried to brake at an intersection due to a red light and there was a car in front of me, i was unable to use the brakes because the pad got stiff and it didn't allow me to brake, i had to use my emergency brake but i hit the car in front of me .
When i apply my brakes at low speed there is a rotational noise in the rear end.i found out on my last recall visit that gm knows of this issue and sent out a document, #pica dated 11/19/2012 saying they were working on the problem.i have contacted gm to see if they have resolved this issue.they reported back to me, after 3 weeks of phone conversations and talking to multiple persons, that the rear drums have to be re-designed and that they are working on the fix.i asked for a letter or email showing me the date my car will be fixed and that it is not a safety issue even though the problem is with the brakes.they refused me a letter or email on this issue and i only talk to someone with a first name.i have heard this same noise since 5/12/2012 but now it is getting louder.
When pressing on the brake the brake front pads don't catch all the way some times even the roads are dry. It is especially noticeable if i'm driving over a bumpy road and apply the brakes you can feel the skipping of the brakes not catching.had brakes inspected they are in good condition with life still on them. The dealership checked the brakes they said nothing is wrong. I made a complain to the dealership about the unsafeness i feel driving. I only drive on the street to work and home.i still have the skipping in the braking. I'm always checking to see if there is a recall of somekind on this car part.

Soon after i purchase my car i notice when i'm on the bypass its like a feather wobbling . Then recently i'm driving and my steering wheel come up, and wont lock back.
During an continuous left had turn in a parking lot the steering locked up not allowing for the steering wheel to be brought back to center causing loss of control and collision with a curb inside of a parking lot. Once impact with right front tire was made and damage sustained, minimal steering was regained allowing for car to be maneuvered to a safe location.
We purchased a new 2012 chevrolet sonic sedan. The first time that we drove it at highway and interstate speeds we noticed that the vehicle was very difficult to keep in the driving lane. We returned to the dealer and after a new set of tires, then later a new set of larger wheels and tires there has been some improvement in handling. I am 55 years old and have driven many different cars and trucks and this is the worst driving vehicle ever. This car is dangerous to drive and something needs to be done about it. It is the worst on concrete roads that have been ground but handling is always bad. I hope you will take a serious look at this car before someone gets killed.
Just got the car and the switch button is getting stuck and my key won't come out of the ignition it's been happening not every time i try to park it and won't stay fully in park.
We bought the chevy sonic brand new, off the dealers lot. When driving at 55 mph or above we found that the car drifts excessively and is very hard to keep in the lane. On a few occasions driving at posted highway speeds we were forced to slow down because ofradical swerving. Our first complaints to the service department were answered with "it's the new electronic steering, you'll get used to it" after driving a few more weeks with no improvement, we took it back in to the service department to have it looked at. A notice concerning the belly pan causing steering problems on cars built before january 2012 was recognized and it was removed from our vehicle which helped only a small amount. Upon two more visits to the service department, nothing else was found. Both my wife and i have driven a variety of new vehicles including small cars with a combined driving experience of 70 years and this is the first time we've had an issue with a new vehicle. The steering on this car is dangerous and needs to be resolved before someone gets hurt.
The steering wheel started "hunting" (shaking left and right) and resisted attempts to steer the vehicle. Although the car was still controllable, it was difficult to handle. This happens both while stopped and while driving. The problem is intermittent and is not thermal (will happen both at cold start-up and when vehicle is up to operating temperature. It is not effected by ambient temperature). The dealer reprogrammed the electronic brake control module with sps 155 wt40, stating thecurrent programming was incorrect. The invoice reported a code: "c0710 symptom 4b sensor not learned relearn steering sensor". The problem returned after approx 100 miles of use. Additionally, onstar notified me (approx 25 may 2012) that the backup battery for its system was faulty and required immediate service. I mention this because i do not know if the backup battery for onstar is common to any backup systems for the sonic's computers. I am returning the vehicle to the dealer for additional investigation and service.
Key getting stuck in ignition. It doesn't do it all the time but when it does you have to start the car two or thre times before it comes out. I bought the car used from a honda dealer. It has happened 6 times total. And i have had the car a month.

As the only driver of the vehicle, i am mad that my door malfunctioned.
I noticed the driver's door was not closing completely.upon inspection i saw the door latch post that is screwed onto the body was loose.this is a safety issue if the door does not stay closed during driving and also a body integrity issue should water enter the vehicle through the door.
Front seat right and left door handles , chrome covering split causing sharp edge resulting cut hand for driver.

The rumbling/rubbing noise began on the passenger side of the front end of the car.with only 3,000+ miles on the car it was still under warranty and was taken to the service department.they found a leaking rf strut and noisy mount and replaced both parts.the replaced part seemed to remedy the rumbling problem but the front end still seemed unforgiving when it was driven on rough pavement.we began hearing a groaning/ rubbing/ grinding noise when the car was turning corners or while turning on an incline especially to the right and at 8,000 miles we returned the car and the service department said it was operating okay.the noise continued and at 13,000+ miles we returned the car and the service department found the mount to be binding on turns and replaced the rf strut mount.again, the problem remained and finally a service technician rode with us and heard the noise and agreed that it was not supposed to be there.so at 15,000 miles the car was in the service department for two and a half weeks.they replaced the rf strut and mount because the strut was not setting flush in the mount.during the time the car was in the shop the technician called and said they were able to fix the issue but there was still another noise they heard and they needed more time to work on it.we requested a ride along with the service technician and the noise was absent on turning right at a slow speed but very apparent now in the front end of the car when turning in to park at the service department.at that time we requested to speak with the service manager and are in the process of negotiating a deal for a different car as this seems to be an on-going issue.we loved the great gas mileage and sporty look but the suspension seems to be troubled.
First time the strut mount was replace with strut. I never heard the rubber tension/binding noise. The strut started making a popping noise before i took it to dealer at 13386 miles.it was finally duplicated at 19885 miles to have mount and strut replaced.65886 mile replacing strut and mount again. 75922 stabilizer bar end links (per recall)84869only strut mount was replaced again87000 strut mount has begun to make rubber tension/binding noise again.gm has been notified and i am working with local dealership and district specialist.
Having heard rattling in the front of her sonic my daughter took the car to the dealership where purchased. The main complaint was rattling from the front of her vehicle only.after much run around(from a supposed 5 star service department) they told her that it was intermittent and that they would not be able to find or duplicate the problem. So they sent her on her way. Last week she was driving home and heard a loud bang. She thought she hit something or something hit her. No damage was displayed on the vehicle or in the roadway. A mystery bang for sure.i drove the car and heard nothing. Not saying that there is nothing wrong but my daughters, as is everyone's, safety is at risk here. I am taking my daughters car back to the dealership and with recalls in hand will request inspections of every part on the recalls.

My vehicle is unsafe i purchased the car in september have control issues at highway speeds my car sways all over the road dealer will not help me .i am not the only one complaints online everywhere please investigate this car before someone gets killed for driving and unsafe car.

The car has a popping noise when backing over a curb or turning slowly.ferman dealership in brandon, fl. Could not find anything wrong.2012 sonics have had many complaints about the popping noise under car. Seems to be a suspension problem.dealer said they have not heard any complaints.they are not telling the truth.
Takata recall - the gasket or o ring on the oil filter housing keep leaking. I done replaced everything from oil filter to the housing. I have only own the car for 7 months and i have only out 5000 miles on the car.now the smell of the oil is hitting the exhaust and smoking. I didn't know anything was leaking until i smelled the oil hitting the exhaust.
Vehicle was parked on christmas eve 2018 and drained battery. Radio would turn off but turn back on it's self. Causes battery replacement. To to gm they took fuse 15 out now have no speakers onstar radio incoming calls crash response
The gear shuft assembly is the issue. The button on the gearshift gets stuck. The car cannot be turned off. I replaced the gear shift assembly once. I must now replace it again.
My chev sonic 2012 tries to restart by it self when key is turned off and left in ignition and car is stationary. You never no when it's going to happen. I don't leave the key in ignition at all for being afraid what will happen. Needs to be a recall on this problem. Very disappointed!!!
The button on the gear shift sticks. When the button won't pop out after being put into gear, it can be bumped and moved into another gear causing a safety risk. The gear shift should be recalled! also when i'm in park and it won't pop out, my car will not let me remove the keys. And when the keys are in the ignition, the car won't lock. My car is also now likely to be stolen.
Radio is not working.therefore, i am unable to hear any alarms (door, blinker).i am also unable to use hand free calling or on star. Also, the car will randomly attempt to start if the key is left in the ignition.
I have an automatic car. When i put the car in park, i believe its called the gear shift button, gets stuck for several minutes and i cannot remove my key from the ignition until it pops out. Reported this to my dealership and they spayed some oil around the button but that did not help. This happens daily. Sometimes it takes a few seconds for the button to pop and other times it has taken up to 10 minutes for the button to release.
My car is running fine / all right. No problems!
2012 chevrolet sonic.consumer writes in regards to vehicle metal grinding noises when accelerating from a stop.
This vehicle has had "undiagnosable" problems aince it hit 1200 miles. I have made 57 visits to chevy dealerships for attempted diagnostics and repairs. The car has lurched forward of its own accord, my brakes have failed to engage on a single occasion, the car has intermittently shut off during idle, the car has also had issues with shifting for the last 2 years. A 3 year battle has yeilded no answers or improvement; i was unable to utilize the lemon law because the issues couldn't be diagnosed.finally the car is showing codes for what i believe is the transmission based on how poorly the car is running.i can provide information for the dealerships i have worked with; they have all the documentation for the obscene number of visits i've made with this car.
I was driving down the highway. When my car slowed down to 15 miles per hour & my engine began to rev it's self. As i almost got hit. I pulled over in a parking lot & was trying to reverse into a parking space. When all of a sudden i realized i had lost my reverse.
Stick shift button started to stck and now the bitton is broken at the bottom.it is barly shifting to r, p or drive.hits cause u cant push in button.sometimes cant put in park or key is stuck cause it isnt in park all the way.this is going to mess up my transmition!!!
When putting my car into park the gear shift button is not releasing therefore the car can not be turned off! the service place is changing me $315 to replace the whole gear shift! also gear shift is sticking not wanting to go into park!!!
Hasburning smell of anti freeze and wires melting. Air bags don't work on front passenger side.
In my 2012 chevy sonic, the shift button sticks when trying to change the car from park, reverse, neutral, and drive. When this occurs, the shifter is free to easily switch into any position. The car is never fully engaged in park, and sometimes i cannot take the keys out of the ignition. Many people have reported similar issues, but chevy will not cover repairs, which they typically report to be around $400. The car could shift out of park on its own and into reverse or drive and strike a pediatrian or property. Note that this is an ongoing problem every time i drive my vehicle, not just a one time occurance.
I noticed the button on my gear shift would always stick when i either went to put the car into gear or into park. I could not shut the car completely off until i got the button unstuck. Then, i noticed that the button was broke. This would happen anytime i used the button. It had been sticking on me for a while, but i noticed it was broke on 6/9/2016.
Shift lever (gear shifter) started getting stuck in park when i attempted to put it in drive. My vehicle key would also get stuck in the ignition. These two problems put my personal safety at risk because in not being able to shift from park to drive and (or) take my key out of the ignition, i would be left stranded out in public.
Automatically stops
They key is stuck in the ignition, and the gear shift keeps getting stuck.the key will release after the car has set for over 15 minutes. Gets stuck after i shut off the car.
When i tried to shift gears while driving my clutch is stuck and i can't switch and it makes a weird sound and stall in the middle of the street.
In hot weather, car alarm will sound for no reason whatsoever while vehicle is parked -- even after engine has cooled. This happened last year around april.i took vehicle to dealer for repair.it just began happening again.
On sunday, my transmission had a complete failure; according to the dealership, on monday afternoon, we had the vehicle towed to pinkerton in salem 925 n electric rd, salem, va 24153 540-562-1337.the vehicle has only had 48,900. They said that there was a flaw possible in the transmission but have been waiting to see if they have a fix for the problem since it was possibly a manufacturing issue since the vehicle was service regularly at the dealership.we were on the highway when this was happening, and the vehicle what to stall out, so we had to come home.on monday, we had the vehicle towed since it would not reverse out of the driveway..no warning light, and the car was driving fine until 07/25/2021
When changing the gear selection for example from park to drive ....the gear button stays stuck / pushed in..... This is dangerous as an infant or your passenger can accidentally hit the shift knob allowing the car to come a sudden stop or put the car in reverse.
Takata recall lately ill turn the radio off get out the car come back hours later an its on right now its acting like it dont wanna turn off it keep popping back on not sure whats the problem had the car for not even a year theremote stop working to.
Check engine light-------after the factory warrantee expired i still have the power train in full force, but the check engine light keeps coming on. I had it repaired about 8months ago for some part covered under power train. This makes 6 times the engine light has come on again. I hate this because i cannot use the main feature i purchased the car for auto start. So needless to say it is doing the same mess....
Gear shift button sticks. Upon arriving at work this past monday, i turned my car off but the ignition wouldn't release the key. Looking closer i realized the shift button had not popped out like it should have. Which means i drove 26 miles in a dangerous vehicle. I immediately drove the car to my dealership about two miles away. They told me they couldn't get to it for five days, oh i'd have to get a rental in the meantime.i called my son who manages a nationwide auto parts store. Apparently this appears to be a common problem with the sonic vehicles. I don't know if any accidents have happened but i can say it is possible for the gear to shift while driving it, or knocked into neutral while in park. There is a common fix, replace the button. I've had that done but it still sticks. Also, i have had some recommended lubricant applied, but that has made matters worse because now it's difficult to get the shifter button to depress. I don't know what to do at this point, i have to leave in the morning to go out of town that i can't put off. I'm afraid.
Shift gear cracked about a month ago...two months ago keys broke, today sitting at stop light couldn't get car into gear.every gear went to reverse. Had to have cake towed.
The console gear shift has a button that must be depressed to shift.button sticks in depressed position.cannot remove keys in park position.vehicle is 2012, 28,000 miles.
The rear window shattered unexpectedly while driving down a city street for no apparent reason. No evidence of anything hitting the window was found. The rear defogger was on when it happened.
Gear shifter button gets stuck, not allowing releasing key from ignition. Driver has to have lubricant on hand at all times, to get shifter button unstuck. However lately it is getting somewhat harder to get it to work
With only 40,000 miles and 3 years old, air intake hose is cracked and split in many locations.
On my way to church last week my car caught fire at a stop light and was totally engulfed in flames.i have pices if you need them.
For an automatic 2012 chevy sonic.gear shift knob became nonfunctional causing key to become stick in ignition.could not exit vehicle.could not shift into d or sometime out of drive into park. Eventually went to the dealer who replaced the whole unit at a charge to me.the replacement unit seems to occasionally stick in the same way however has not caused problems yet.
Transmission failure on interior is what service told me. Something blew and not only does transmission not work but the tires won't turn. I saw a recall for 2012 chevy sonic, but was told not on my vin number. The recall was for the transmission shaft, which they said could be the reason. The vehicle was stopped at a red light, on a street and i turned right, onto a junction when the engine revved up and then died as i accelerated.i coasted to the side and up to a farm drive.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic.
1. Car loses power when accelerating/hesitation - sometimes almost feeling like the car will shut down.it's random but happening more often.car was repaired once already for this, was better for about 3-4 months and now is doing it again.extremely dangerous when merging onto highways or making right turns on red or switching lanes. 2. The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic.
Car accelerated on it'sown in drive and reverse causing my husband to hit a fence in drive and hitting a tree in reverse, he was driving on a city street, no one seek any medical treatment, called the police when he got home and made a report but do not have it on hand.
My car keeps shutting completely off even while driving, the radio come on and off by itself and no one can tell me why, this is very dangerous i be driving with my children in the vehicle and the car shuts off while driving in traffic
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that the front passenger side airbag would not identify that a passenger was sitting in the seat. The contact also stated that the windshield wiper obstructed the field of vision while driving. The dealer was notified, but denied assistance with repairs of the failure.the manufacturer was not notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 5 and the current mileage was 2,000.the vin was unavailable.
I was driving at night and it was warm outside.....so bugs caked onto the windshield. When the bugs caked onto the windshield i tried to use my windshield cleaner and nothing would come out and i ended up smearing the bugs. I absolutely could not see....so i made it to the nearest gas station and checked the reservoir to find it empty. I went into the gas station and bought a cheap bottle of clean and put it into the reservoir, and as soon as i put it in a puddle drained from underneath the car. I found that the reservoir could not hold the liquid and i figured that a hose must be loose.
Iam having problems with my windshield wiper fluid the hoseor something is causing the fluid to drain on the ground i explained to bradley chevrolet in franklin indiana that this has been a recall issue but they stated that my vin number wasn't in the recall but i am having the same issue that is dumb i want this work completed under the recall and fixed and i am having a lean codeof po171 come up that onstar diagnosed and bradley doesn't want to even look at it without charging me a diagnostic fee when i already have the code feeling very frustrated please help me
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. While attempting to activate the windshield wiper fluid, the windshield fluid failed to emit. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the contact was informed that the vin was not included in the nhtsa campaign number: 12v408000 (visibility). The failure mileage was 36,100.
It was a foggy night i had just got off work i started my car like any other normal day/night except this night i used my rear defrost i proceed to leave my job as i been to get off the on ramp to the highway my entire back glass explodes and bust out causing glass to shatter everywhere and leaving me without a rear window and costly repairs. I'm not sure if there is a recall on this but there definitely should be as this can cost many people thousands of dollars if everytime the rear defrost is cut on there a possibility my window could bust and i get covered with glass
I went to go some place when i noticed the passenger side of my windshield cracked. There is no chip indicating that something had hit it. The crack seems to have started from the edge of the windshield. It seems that the windshield had twisted. The crack is approx 8 to 12 inches and circles into an up side down u. I believe gm should look into this problem. I have checked to see if gm has a recall and they do not.
Window washer fluid is not coming outdue to washer hose having disconnected from fluid reservoir.
As i was making a left turn in an intersection at 5:30am my rear glass window burst and all the glass shattered leaving glass on the four sides only. Inexplicable how it happened, my first reaction was too look back and see if anybody had hit us, but when i looked through the rear/side mirrorsthere was no cars behind us or near us. The same morning i called the dealership and they towed my vehicle to the shop for a transmission recall, per the dealer they would not cover it under the warranty due to general motors had no other vehicles reporting the same incident. I feel it should be looked at because i'm sure many 2012 chevy sonics have it as a defect. With so many recalls i wouldn't doubt that the windows are being recalled as well.
The outside door mirrors are small and have blind spots. I've lost sight of vehicles i know where behind me. When gm became aware of this overlook in design of the 2012 chevy sonic, 2013 models were installed with the same size mirror with a small convex as part of the mirror to detect areas previous mirrors could not detect. This is a safety issue and i feel there should be a recall by gm to replace these mirrors.
The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet sonic. The contact stated that he could hear a grinding noise whenever making a turn. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the failure might have been cause by a defective suspension. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who offered to send a lubrication kit to remedy the problem. The failure mileage was 12,000. ...updated 10/19/12updated 10/25/2012
My vehicle is unsafe i purchased the car in september have control issues at highway speeds my car sways all over the road dealer will not help me .i am not the only one complaints online everywhere please investigate this car before someone gets killed for driving and unsafe car.
The light my engine shows and it alwayssmell labor ke oil
