I keep having a problems with my fuel pump. I have a 1998 z-71 extended cab truck with 88,000 miles. I have had to replace the fuel pump twice in the last year and half. I don't understand why this is happening.

Vehicle left roadway and went into a drainage ditch. The airbags failed to deploy resulting in the drivers death.

Consumer states that the air bag light will come on and stay, the steering wheel will get warm while the consumer is driving. Contacted dealer and the dealer is not willing to do anything.nlm

My wife was involved in a collision at 40 mph, in which the air bag did not deploy.due to this failure, she began having premature contractions ( 7 1/2 months pregnant) after hitting the steering wheel of the vehicle with her stomach.also caused her to be hospitalized for 2 days.accident occurred to the front of the vehicle.

Air bab did not deploy want to know if there is a recall on this matter.

While driving through a pasture passenger's air bag deployed whilechild was in a saftey seat, and air bag switch was turned off. Dealer andmanufacturer has been notified. Feel free to provide any further information.

The vehicle was involved in a frontal collisionat 40 mph, however the air bags failed to deploy.*nlm*scc

Consumer was traveling 40mphand while going around a curve a tire blew out, resulting in a crash. Upon impact, passenger's side airbag didn't deploy, nor did the seat belts help to secure the passenger & driver at the time of impact. Manufacturer has been contacted 3 times. *ml

The vehicle had problems with the taillights, dash board lightsandthe headlights. The dealer indicated there was an electrical problem. Please provide further information.the problem went back because dealer only patched the wire instead of replacing them.dealer now removed the dashboard to work on the problem.*la

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet silverado. The contact stated that the vehicle would not start. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who stated the failure found was related to the security system. The vehicle was repaired by replacing the ignition. The failure recurred approximately six times. The dealer was unable to determine the exact failure. The manufacturer was not made aware. The vin was unavailable. The current mileage was 135,000. The failure mileage was 127,000.

Evo or steering wheel sensor fails and causes loss of pressure on the steering wheel. This results in unintentional movement of the steerig wheel. Consumer believes this is common problem of gm vehicles and that there should be an immediate campaign to recall for the safety of the public. *et

When getting out of vehicle, the occupants received an electrical shock.

Consumer called complaining about electrical problems.an electrical problem caused a fire ondriver's door.the manufacturer was not contacted at the time of this call. *ph

Dt:while driving on the road after about 5 minutes, an odor of smoke came from under the hood. The consumer stopped on the side of the road, looked under the hood and everything seemed fine.when the driver returned to the cab of the vehicle, it was filled with smoke.the fire dept was called to the scene to put out the fire.

Battery failed.nlm

Brakes failed due to battery acid leak on brake tubing

Positive battery terminal leaked acid onto positive cables causing main ecm to short and turn off truck while driving.also, found acid had eaten through the alternator charging wire and insulation causing a possible fire potential if not found

Ac delco battery leaked acid from positive side-mount terminal, slightly corroding the replacement brake hoses under battery and could have caused failure of original brake hoses.

While driving 40 mphvehicle stalled.also, dealer replaced positive post connector of battery.

Factory installedbattery is leaking acid ontometal tubing of the brake linecausing it to corrode and eat line away, resulting in loss of brakes.

Positive battery terminal leaked acid onto positive cables causing main ecm to short and turn off truck while driving.also, found acid had eaten through the alternator charging wire and insulation causing a possible fire potential if not found

Consumer's brakes lock up & sometimes there's a jerking motion.also, horn when it's coldcomes on by itself.dealer will be notified of the problems. More information will be added by consumer.

My truck just started starting bad, it used to turn over easy, now i have to turn the key with more pressure than before. It starts but, with the a/c and radio on the truck wil stall while driving. Nothing has happened leading up to this, just out of the blue.

Positive battery terminal leaked acid onto positive cables causing main ecm to short and turn off truck while driving.also, found acid had eaten through the alternator charging wire and insulation causing a possible fire potential if not found

The rear turn signal and brake indicator failed without.dealer stated that electronic relaymalfunctioned.it only happened during the winter months.chevrolet silverado 1998 has had on going electrical and braking system issues since it was new.

During normal driving conditions (fair weather, city driving) my pick-up died in the middle of traffic just after completing a left turn and shifting into second gear.i was in the left lane and managed to let it coast into a little used left turn lane.i had it towed to my local dealership (fisher chevrolet, boulder, colorado), where they informed me that a wiring harness was routed past the exhaust manifold and had melted and caused a grounded crank signal. ( my father also has the same year, make, and model as i do, and his pick-up has a similar wiring pattern.)the wiring and fuses were replaced and re-routed, and the crank signal circuit was repaired.

The dashboard in the truck caught on fire.we were able to extinguish the fire before extensive damage was done.the gm dealership determined that the cause of the fire was the wiring harness under the hood.we reported this to gm, and they said that they had no other reports and were not going to do anything about it because of the age of the vehicle.i looked on the nhtsa site and found 52 pages of other chevrolet trucks with similar problems from 1996 to 2002.i believe someone could get seriously hurt or killed if this were to happen while driving.we were fortunate that we were able to put the fire out.gm will not even investigate this problem, our extended warranty isn't worth the paper it is written on and our insurance company will only pay for ensuing damage.i think someone with some authoriy should contact gm since this is an obvious defect in design.michael butori.

Left taillight circuit board failure during a long trip made for hazardous driving. Gm states that this is a common occurence.weak component. Weak components should have safety recalls due to safety and poor design.gm customer service contacted. Since vehicle had 41,000 miles, they felt no responsibility.

Vehicle expereincing problem with blown ecm fuses which cause vehicle to shut down.vehicle has been to dealer shop on one occasion, and at an independent repair shop.both were unable to correct the problem.consumer stated the dealer is having a problem locating the short, the fuse has blown on 4 ocassions.

1998 silverado ext. Cab - the vehicle had been sitting all afternoon of 10/24 and all night.friday morning at about 6:15 i heard a horn blowing.i went outside to investigate and foundthe interior of my truck on fire. I have pictures (if you would like to see them).it is obvious that the fire started in the dash to left of the steering wheel.that section of the dash was melted beyond recognition.the windshield blewin the left hand corner and the driver's side window also blew.the left side of the steering wheel completely melted and the drivers seat was burnt to the floor.the rest of the interior burned also, but the heaviest burning was the front drivers side.the truck was deemed totaled.there is not doubt that the fire started in the left dash near the fuse door.i was told that there had been a recall for this problem, but i never received anything about it.if the melting plastic on the steering wheel had not set the horn off, we would have lost our home.can you give me any information about this.i would be glad to send you the pictures if you like.dt

The engine coolant leaked out, and the vehicle overheated. This was caused by the heater nipple being corroded and breaking off.

Truck has 2 bad rods, and needs a crank only have 52k on it and it looks new we just puta trans in it jan 03 and now it needs a motor wow!!!! we have 8 autos all chevy this truck is a junk!!!!!t thanks ..

I have a 1998 chevy silverado 4x4 1 ton pickup. I was having terrible over heating problems, suddenly while on the highway one day and istopped and opened the radiator it looked like black sludge. After taking it to be fixed i find it is the coolant that chevy installs called dexcool and it is causing all kinds of problems for most chevy consumers. What can we do? i have to have a new engine after they emptied out 1/2 gallon of the sludge from my vehicle. Thank you, and i look forward to hearing from you,[xxx]. While making a turnvehicle will stall ,and will be hard for vehicle to start back up. Dealer notified.

On-going / intermittent problem with vehicle stalling while driving, this condition happens between 30-70 mph. Somtimes vehicle would not restart. Been in/out of dealer shop on five occasions anda total 45 days, and dealer is still unable to resolve the problem. Can nhtsa provide further details in this matter.

While driving 40 mphvehicle stalled.also, dealer replaced positive post connector of battery.

Ongoing problem with vehicle hesitating / stalling at a stop position. When applying the accelerator pedal carburetor flooded. Vehicle been inspected/repairs on two occasions, and been to two different dealers, and problem still reoccurring.

Engine knocking continually, normal condition of vehicle (service bulletin 77-61-21). Mjs

Dt*:the contact stated while applying brake pressure at low speeds the anti-lock brakes activate, which made the vehicle difficult to stop.this occurred intermittently on dry roads during normal braking without warning.the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop.the mechanic replaced the front brake pads, which did not remedy the problem.the dealership and manufacturer were not alerted. The mechanic installed a serpentine belt. Updated 03/09/06.

Steeringwheel vibrated, problem existed for a time. Evo sensor needed replacement again asproblem has reoccurred.

Oxygen sensor failed.yh

Smog and check valve diaphram cracked and leaking exhaust fumes. Mjs

Ontop ofengine electrical wires are connected, and fuel is bypassing intocontrol module.when vehicle is under pressure, it causes fuel to leak intoengine compartment, which could come into contact with the manifold, causing a fire hazard. Consumer has contacteddealer.

Intake manifold gasket was cracked and leaked out all water and severely overheated engine. The mechanic here at work says that he has changed a few hundred of these here at work were we have thousands of chevy trucks that are this same engine.

Intake manifold leaked coolant onto the engine. This can result in the engine overheating and result in a fire.the fitting in the intake manifold used to connect the coolant hose was made of a different metal than the intake manifold itself. This caused dissimilar metal corrosion in the fitting itself which lead to unnoticed pin hole leaks in the cooling system. Consumer felt gm should have provided a barrier between the two metals to solve the problem.*ph

1998 chevrolet silverado pick-up had what appeared to be radiator leak.after further diagnosis, what was actually the problem was that the fitting in the intake manifold used to connect the coolant hose was made of a different metal than the intake manifold; the part crumbled while trying to fit the coolant hose over the fitting by hand (no tools involved!).i now have a truck in the garage that i cannot drive until it is fixed because the part does not "fit" due to the corrosion where the dissimilar metals came into contact and corroded.the "neck" of the part is still corroded on the manifold and a new part cannot be installed until the corroded metal/fitting is cleaned out.corroded part is available.digital photo of corrosion available.corrosion not yet repaired.

The spare tire winch cable broke causing a serious accident behind the vehicle.i believe this is a common occurece with many makes and models of vehicles.though this problem may not be reported often, i think it is a very common incident that needs to be investigated.

The cable to the spare tire had snapped, and the spare tire was missing. Dealer replaced the cable.

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that the running lights were constantly illuminated and there was no way to deactivate the lights. The contact expressed displeasure with the feature and felt that it affected his driving. The vehicle was not taken to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the situation and informed the contact that the vehicle was operating as designed. The failure mileage was 150,000.

The rear turn signal and brake indicator failed without.dealer stated that electronic relaymalfunctioned.it only happened during the winter months.chevrolet silverado 1998 has had on going electrical and braking system issues since it was new.

Both taillight inserts, the piece that holds the bulbs in taillight lens went bad within a 1 month period. This caused me to have no taillights or blinkers. Each piece costs over $50. This is a defective design as 3 other people i know have had the same problem.

Daytime running lights can not be turned off due to design without coming to complete stop and engaging emergency parking brake, this has caused problems due to laws (military sites do not allow for lights to be on when entering).

Water leaked from the front headlight lens.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Consumer was trying to changetail lights & found that the manufacturer tightened too much the brackets which made itcrack.dealer & manufacturer will only repair vehicle at consumers expense.vehicle is under warranty.

Consumer's 3rd tailight short circuited. Light bulb that was replaced seemed burned at the socket.consumer had to order a $48 base & there seemed to be an electrical problem.

The consumer stated the windshield wiper motor failed. The consumer stated the module was replaced.also the turn signal lights were replaced because of a burned out bulb.

Turn signal would stop operating becausesocket overheated and causedbulbs to blowout.socket was replaced on two occasions, andproblem reoccurred. Feel free to provide any further information.

Fuel pump failed at 21000 miles. Right rear side window has major wind noise. Dealer has replaced latch, but wind noise still exists at normal highway speeds.

Dt:electronic fuel pump on the 1998 chevrolet goes out ever 10,000 miles, consumer has replaced fuel pump 3 times already.

While approaching a traffic light vehicle stalled. When this occurredvehicle lost power steering and brakes. Cvonsumer was able to steer vehicle into a curb. Dealership indicated that the fuel injectors and pump were bad and need to be replaced. This was the second time these parts were replaced.

Vehicle was losing fuel mileage andfuel gauge went to empty/ back full, then tonormal, and reading 3/4 full. After consumer pulled over, and turnedvehicle off, vehicle wouldn't restart.independent garage gave backold fuel pump soconsumer could see the problem.wiring onpump andfuel gauge had meltedand fused together ,shorting outfuel pump and gauge.consumer was concerned that itcould repeat and cause an electrical short. Also, could occur withnew pump.

In wet conditionsfuel shut off switch will activate, causing fuel to stop getting into engine, resulting in vehiclequitting to run( stalled). There is no override button ,it must be reset by computer.

Enginecheck light came on,and then after the car was turned off, it would not turn back on.not thinking this was a major problem, we had the vehicle towed to a neighbors brothers service station.they inspected the vehicle and then told us that the fuel injector(s) pushed gas along the electrical line to the ecm.when they removed some cables to the ecm gasoline poured out.they then took the plastic case off only to find the case was filled with gasoline.they told us they were surprised that the truck had not blown up.we contacted the chevrolet dealer closest to us.when my husband talked to the service technician at the dealer he said let me guess you have a chevy tahoe.chris said no, a silverado.the service technician said he has seen this happen in the tahoe, but not yet a silverado.the only thing we were told is that possibly they will pay half of the service.this is their problem not ours. We were also told that a regional manager would contact us thursday.time is just ticking away! we did not ask for this to happen!please help us.my husband uses his truck for work (to haul his tools to and from the job site) he has not been able to work!please contact us to let us know what we can do.thank you!

While traveling at any speed fuel smell are wascoming through the vents.vehicle was taken to an independent shop, and mechanic determined thatfuel rail was leaking gasoline.

While approaching a traffic light vehicle stalled. When this occurredvehicle lost power steering and brakes. Cvonsumer was able to steer vehicle into a curb. Dealership indicated that the fuel injectors and pump were bad and need to be replaced. This was the second time these parts were replaced.

While driving, vehicle broke down due to electronic transfer module malfunction, it would not allow the rear fuel tank to kick in, dealer has replaced the fuel sender, balance pump control and transfer pump, consumer later received service bulletin regarding the inoperative fuel transfer pump.

While driving gas tank is leaking fluid. Dealer notified.

Dealer replaced the fuel tank.once again while drivingat normal speedfuel tank collapsed. The collapse of the fuel tank was due to the vacuum that pump fuel failed to vent.*la

Fuel gauge sensor/float failed.yh

The consumer stated while driving and with no warning, the hood latch released.

1998 chevrolet, silverado - tailgate has broken once with me on it and once with load on it within last 24months, i have had to replace both tailgate straps, and ther latch hardware one time.

Whenever driving the vehicle there is a loud noise coming from the brakes and the pedalvibrates.also, when applying the brakes the pedal goes straight to the floorboard. Sometimesthe parking brake doesn't work.consumer had the vehicle in the shop five times for repairs, and the dealer still doesn't know what the problem is. Since then dealer changed the brakes/ rear drums/front pads the rear shoes and back drums twice, and they still can't determine the problem.

Owner had parked vehicle in driveway. Had pushed emergency pedal down & it fail to engage. Noticed vehicle had no emergency parking brake. The vehicle had rolled backwards. Took vehicle to dealer & informed rear seals had leaked on rear brakes. The front brakes were worn due to lack of rear brakes. Had to have front brakes & rear seals replaced.

There are irregularities inspeedometer.speedometer reads faster than actual timed speed, this causes fuel mileage to be false and consumer states it gets the manufacturer out of warranty faster.when abs are applied, if the rear wheels encounter a bump, the rear brakes stay out of action putting all braking on front wheels.

While driving the vehicle made a loud banging noise.the consumer had the u joints replaced, thinking that would correct the problem.upon starting the vehicle again and taking off, the noise came back.however, the consumer put the vehicle into reverse and the transmission locked up.*sc

While driving down the roadvehicle shook and shimmied.took vehicle tomechanic, and transmission/torque converter had to be replaced.*ml

In july of 2000 i purchased a 1998 chevrolet silverado, used, from a ford dealership.there was only a 30 day warranty.in the beginning of december the brakes went on the vehicle.the brakes and rotors were replaced.on december 24, 2000, without any notice whatsoever, while shifting the truck into reverse i noticed it would not move.i put it into drive and it moved.after having the truck looked at, it was determined that there was a problem with the transmission.when i called the dealership where the truck was purchased, i was told that it would cost approximately $2,000.00 to re-build the transmission.after only having the truck for six months, driving it 30 miles round trip to work, never using the vehicle as a plow truck and never misusing the vehicle i would like to know how a vehicle of this year could lose such a major unit and have no recourse on the part of the dealership or manufacturer, that it become the responsibility of the owner to correct such an expensive error.

When shifting vehicle into reverse vehicle would not travel backward or when shifting into drive vehicle would not travel forward. Vehicle was serviced, technician replaced transmission. Please provide further information.

The support cables that retained the tailgate broke while loading a snow trailer, which caused the tailgate to collapse. No injuries to report.the dealer was notified. The dealer informed the consumer that the vehicle was not covered under a recall. The consumer stated that there were no weight restrictionsposted for the capacity of the endgate.the consumer was loading a craftsman 5 hp compact snow thrower165 lbs on the truck.the selling dealer offered to cover the cost of replacing the broken cables at their expense. The consumer stated the problem has nothing to do with the selling dealership but everything to do with general motors the producer of the materials used in the manufacture of this vehicle.the consumerstated that he removed the transmission oil pan for fluid drainage.a transmission filter that would fit this vehicle as ordered from the selling dealer would not work with the transmission oil pan originally installed on the vehicle.the consumer had to purchase the correct transmission fluid pan that should have come on the vehicle.*tc

Consumer was atstop sign and whenlightturned green he proceeded to cross the intersection.vehicle shifted to first gear andinto reverse, and stripped reverse gear out dueelectrical part inside oftransmission.dealership was aware ofproblem.

While driving down the roadvehicle shook and shimmied.took vehicle tomechanic, and transmission/torque converter had to be replaced.*ml

Left rear axle seal failed.yh

Since purchasing this vehicle it has had the right rear axle seal replaced twice. It has just blown out again making this the third time. The last time it was replaced i was told that this part had a defective design and that they were using a "newly designed" part (seal). My cocern is that this vehicle is now out of warranty, the rear brakes will have to be replacedas well as the seal. I have also had to replace the front brakes and rotors due to premature wear after they were required to compensate for the rear brakes not functioning due to fluid contamination.

When the brake pedal was pressed the brakes made a loud noise due to leaking axle seals.the dealer has been contacted. *nlm

While down shifting the u-joints broke anddriveshaft separated and fell onto the road. Vehicle was in 4-wheel drive when this occurred. Mechanic replaced both u-joints , added oil, and reinstalled the driveshaft.the problem recurredwhile shifting from 2nd to 3rd gear.

Transmission has lost reverse second and fourth gears with no prior problems of noise or motion. Fail to understand how all this can break down so fast and easy.

Transmission went out it started that when you put it reverse it didn'twant to go then put into drive then reverse it worked. Then while driving we pulled into parking spot and tried to reverse it was totally gone. Windshied wipers stop working on and off. You can hear themotor they won'tmove and at most times it effects the windshield washer fluid so it doesn't work.

Seatbelt on passenger side is too short won't fasten over passenger's.

Driver's and passenger's seat belts will lock upwhile passengers are wearing them andwill not unlock. Dealer has replaced belts on both sides a total of 7 times, including recallcampaign#0045ss; 3 times on driver'sside ,twice on passenger's side, and both campaigns.also, seat track locks too close to airbag, and will intermittently unlock. Track has been replaced 3 times.

In discussing our problem with other owners for gm pu's we have found that in '97 & '99 models the front ends come welded and if not brought back within certain amt of milage dealer will not fix.ours was out of aligment upon driving off lot the first time.dealer said to drive about 1,000 mi. To break in and bring back and will fix.called for appt. For seat belt and front end alignment, took in, seat belt partially fixed, had to order pts. This has been 8 months ago and pt for seatbelt still not in, also did not get alignment, they were running behind, was there 3 hrs, had to go to work, could not wait.next time called for appt. Milage was above what dealer would fix.took to modica bros. Sisbee, tx. And cost $119.95.these trucks are arriving to dealers from mfg. This way, discussed in length with many people with same problem.this is a gm gimick, i think all owners should demand that this be corrected.i own a '94 chev. Pu and never has been aligned with 125,000 mi. On it.does not have to be this way.i want gm to refund everyones money who does not have time to set for alignment when it should be right in first place and hold up more than 3,000 mil.this is a disgrace, not to account for the wearing out of your tires.please reply back to me b.morrispnx.com

Got in leaned back and ended up laying into the back seat area. Now seat-back won't latch in any position.

I pushed the lever on the front drivers side seat to allow passenger entry. The seat came forward as it is designed to do. The seat is now in the forward position and will not lock in the driving position. Your form is showing fire and not seats problems, which is the nature of my complaint, and i do not know how to correct this!!

The drivers side seat metal frame broke, causing seat not to stay in place.

I almost hit a person crossing the street, i was coming to a slow stop, the brakes started making a boing boing noise, everytime it made the noise the brakes stopping power went away the person crossing the streetrealised the truck was having problems... I"ve had 3 of this model truck my first was a 97 tahoe bad breaks i actually got into an accident with that truck rear ended honda civic, my other one was a 94 silverado i had to brake hard once the breaks gave way n the pedal was soft after that. My new one, the one i'm actually complaning about is a 98 silverado 3500 with defective brakes this is a poordesign by gm motors this has to be recalled and repaired.i do know someone who crashed his 2 door blazer into a water tanker he brake hard n the brakes gave out88-98 gm trucks and suv's have deeeeeeefective brakes 3/3 i've had problems with this is not right.

The anti-lock brake system fails on dry pavement when a bump or separation is contacted in the pavement during the braking operation, resulting in lost of braking capacity.this occurs usually between speeds of 25-35 mph during braking while the vehicle is slowing down.if during that time, a bump or rise occurs in the pavement, it seems like traction is lost and braking capacity is diminished, resulting in increased stopping distance.often this occurs at stop signs and intersections, occasionally when attempting to turn, resulting in hazardoushandling.dealer has been notified several times, and attempts to repair by replacement of gasket on fluid reservior lid of master cylinder dimished the symptoms but did not rectify the problem. Hazardous braking situations continues when brake failure and/or increased stopping distance on dry payment occurs.

1998 chev silverado with less than 23,000 mi had to have almost entire break system replaces during an 8 mo. Period in 2004. Replaces drums, pads, master cylinder & had to replace seal to master cylinder due to corrosion. Also, replaced anit-lock brake sensor due to brakes kicking in at low speeds.

Was informed of recall 98v226000. Took vehicle to dealership. Mechanic failed to inspect or replace brake line. Invoice given claimed no problem with brake line.

Brake fluid reservoir will not seal so it is constantely losing brake fluid. Manufacturer has no solution.has advised consumer to keep adding fluid.

The brakes on this truck are spongy and do not stop the vehicle well at all. No repairs done seem to help improve the stopping distance. Worst brake i have ever seen on a vehicle. Definitely not normal.

The same as nhtsa action number : pe05020 but with a 1998 chevrolet silverado 1500.

While traveling down the interstate at 60 mph, noticed brakes were not responding properly. Slowed down, no dash board warning lights appeared, and had to ujse emergency brake to get home.fortunately, it was close to home. This could have been very serious. Vehicle had to be towed to the nearest dealership, bill heard in anitoch, tn. Dealer service manager was consulted concerning gm sharing the expense to no avail. Called gm, customer service myself, and was denied any adjustment. Felt i needed to consult you concerning this safety item on such a new vehicle. There were no brakes front or rear. This vehicle was purchased new and was kept in excellent condition with regular servicing.

Brakes were squeaking and not stopping well after being applied.had to pull to right to avoid hitting another vehicle due to lack of braking ability. Been to dealer & mechanic refuses to adjust brakes. Its an intermittent problem.

Dt*: the contact states there is a nhtsa recall, campaign05v379000 regarding the anti-lock brakes. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however,it is not included in the recall due to the vin. The consumer experienced extended stopping distances during low-speed brake applications.updated 01/19/06.

Contact states: trouble with anti lock brake system. The brakes are slow to stop and pulsate. In winter they will hardly stop when brake is pushed. Pedal goes down slow and pulsates. Problem since time of purchase. No work done on brakes to date.

My 1998 chevrolet pickup seems to have an ongoing problem in the anti-lock brake system. The system activates on dry or wet pavement at slow speeds. It's like a pulsating feeling on the pedal or i like to call it a crunching feel with a noise. It does this about 90% of the time. I have spent over $600 at an independent repair shop with out any real diffrence in the way it works. At this point i have been putting up with the problem wondering if the system will fail. Iwould guess that it takes about 2 to 5 ft. Extra to stop at 5 to 10 mph.

When brake is applied at low speeds the anti lock brake system engages. Same problem that has been reported 1999 model.

Abs has failed daily no abs light comes on indicating failure.

Dt*: the contact stated the abs brakes engagedat low speeds low . The abs engagedat low speed and kept the vehicle from coming to a complete stop. The brake failure occurred when the brakes were applied at speeds of 3 to 10mph. The vehicle was seen by the service dealer, who confirmed the problem was with the abs.there was nhtsa recall 05v379000 concerning antilock brakes. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however, it was not included in the recall due to the vin.

It started witin 1-2 months of purchase, i started having brake problems, since that time i have had my truck to the car dealer for repairs or all 4 brakes and other parts 100% replaced, on the last visit the dealer told me that i would have to pay 1/2 of the $600. Bill and the next time they would pay nothing. I just had my tires replace for the first time on 2/14/00 and les schwab told me my brakes were to a 10-15% balance left. With this inf. It will make it 5 times my brakes will have to be replaced and the dealer will do nothing. While sitting at a stop light and then try to go sometimes the brakes are locked up and it won't move, and other times when i need to stop even on dry pavement the anti lock will kick in and start jerking the truck around. I was told by the people at the attorney generals office i should contact you about this matter. I have sent an em to the chev dealer and directly to chev but have been ignored. I'm getting worried about the safety of my family and myself while being in this truck. Please help me where you can with this matter. Thank you dale harder.

Dt*:the contact stated while attempting to apply brake pressure at 20 mph the antilock brakes engaged causing an increase in stopping distance.this occurred on normal roads during normal braking without warning.the vehicle was taken to the dealership for inspection.upon inspection, they replaced the hub and sensor which did not correct the problem.the manufacturer was alerted.

I have tried unsuccessfully to contact chevrolet to get attention brought to the issue.i keep being told they are investigating the problem, but still no word from them.everytime they say they will get back to me, no one ever does.the brakes lock up when it is wet outsidesometimes they don't work at all, and sometimes they work great.i would just like for my brakes to be fixed.we have consulted 2 authorized chevrolet dealers and they can not duplicate the problem.i am back into a corner and do not know what else to do.i risk my life, my wife's life, our 6 month old daughter's life, and everyone out on the road when i drive the truck.this is the only mode of transportation i have to get back and forth to work.i would appreciate you looking into this problem.thank you, daniel l. When applying brakes there is no action until a long brake pedal stroke finally engages the brakes. This results in extra delay time before brakes are actually applied. The dealer looked at the brakes and adjusted the rear brakes.this did not improve the brake pedal squashy no action, delay to application of brakes. The dealer's shop repair supervisor/ manager drove the vehicle and demonstrated that the vehicle stopped fine. However, he had performed this test with his foot already on and depressing the brake pedal before actually attempting to stop. This approach of course removed the delay to apply the brakes, but hardly a normal way to drive. I have seen this reported in a number of automotive magazines as a problem as well as experiencing it with other chevrolet pickups 1995 thru 1999 models. It seems that a reprogramming of the abs module or something should be done, this is very dangerous. As a final point , my 1998 chrevolet malibu abs brake action is instantaneous, as soon as you touch the brake pedal! it's not because it's a smaller vehicle and not a truck as the dealer tried to imply(baloney!)

Front brake rotors became warped at approximately 15000 miles. They have been removed and machined four times and were replaced the last time. The rotors are now warped again after about 5000 miles. I know of two other people with this model of truck that are experiencing simalar problems.

In cold conditions while driving through small amounts of slush, brakesbecame inoperative, and the left rear wheel locked up, causing an accident.

Vehiclewas pulling to either side when applying brakes intermittently. Vehicle been in dealer shop on five occasions for ,and problem still reocurring . > feel free to provide any further details on this matter.

Dealer said wheel bearing was out of tolerance causing sensor to engage anti-lock brakingwhich resulted in longer stopping distance.cannot replace just bearing whole hub unit $300.dealer says right side is going as well.

Consumer's brakes lock up & sometimes there's a jerking motion.also, horn when it's coldcomes on by itself.dealer will be notified of the problems. More information will be added by consumer.

Have 1998 chevy silverado 1500 short-bed v-6 pickup with abs brake problems.have researched and found there is a history of this problem.the maker is fully aware of the problem but only recalled 1999 and later models. Idon't know how they decided that one, but i do know it has to do with money!in december of 2005, i was in an accident due to the truck brakes failing with the anti-lock pulsing on and i had no braking time and hit another vehicle.it is a well known problem with many gmc truck owners.it's the reason i will never own another gmc product!if a manufacturer has knowledge of a defect and does nothing, it is wrong!at slow speeds when coming to a stop, the abs system kicks on and makes it nearly impossible to stop on time.took it to a dealer who ran the vin and said my truck was not covered.it is not right! a maker who knows of a defect should have to make good on its repair to correct the issue.

1998 silverado had anti lock brake sensor replaced.the front wheel brake sensor was replaced on 10/4/2005.on 12/25/2005 the consumer read an article which stated that general motors had expanded it's recall on the antilock brakes to include wisconsin and that consumer's would receive notice by 2/1/2006.the consumer contacted the dealer who indicated that gm had not issued a recall.the consumer then called gm who also stated that there wasn't a recall.

There has been an ongoing brake problem with this vehicle. When traveling 30 - 40 mph and approaching a stop sign or light. You will get a very hard brake and go thru the intersection before the brakes actually stop the truck. This does not happen every day only occasionally, but on going the truck has been to the dealer with this same problem at 19,000 miles and they could find no problem the truck finally lost all brake power and is at the dealer now with the problem being with the hydraulics and brake booster. The steering wheel on my 1998 silverado was able to turn without the wheels turning. I contacted the customer service department of gm and did not receivea reason why did could happen in a car i bought and was the sole owner. I also told them that i believe it to be a safety item and that a notice should be issued to other owners. The response i received was that i did not have the vehicle brought to their shops and therefore could not comment on what the problem was,or that they would do anything about it. They also said that they would not issue a bulletin as i had not brought it into one of their shops and they could not determine the cause. I also said i would not drive 27 miles to the dealer as i could have an accident.my concern is that they really had no concern for my problem and if this problem was occurring on other vehicles like mine.thank you for listening to my concern and i hope that this not cause anyone any accidents. I was not aware that there was an agency like yours until i read this mornings paper. I would appreciate knowing if there are other concerns as mine or am i the only one. It wasvery disturbing to find out i had that bolt missing. Martin witkowski.

The defective bolt on the steering pitman system "stripped" off, causing the steering wheel to move freely and not moving the tires, which may cause an accident.

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet silverado. The contact stated that while at an independent mechanic for the replacement of the tires the mechanic noticed corrosion and cracks on the front drivers side frame. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 158,000.

On driver's side fromdoor panel to dashbord everything was melting down.extended warranty will cover the damage and no other damage.

Dt*:the contact stated while lowering the tailgate, it was noticed the driver side tailgate cable was broken.there is a nhtsa recall, #06v066000, regarding the tailgate cables.the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however, it is not included in the recall due to the vin.

Consumer indicated that the straps on tailgate were stretched out on one side. As a result, one side was longer than the other side, and could break at anytime.dealershipreplaced the straps 3 times, but the problemrecurred.

The driver's seat overheated while driving. The driver sustained injuries to both legs.the driver went to the hospital the next day.driver took vehicle to the dealer, andmechanic determined that the left seat needed to be replaced.the consumer stated that the tailgate cables failed twice.*tc

While standing on the tailgate the straps broke throwingthe consumer onto the back of the cab.the consumer is not included in the nhtsa recall 04v129000.

Dt: the contact statedtailgate attachment cables broke in half and the tailgate fell off the vehicle. The hinge and attachments were repaired. The vehiclewas alsohavinga problem with the abs engaging at low speeds of 20 mph or less. The brake pedal must be depressed several times in order to stop completely. The vehicle has not been seen by a dealer for inspection. Theabs has not been repaired. The contact noticed recalls 04v129000 and 05v379000 online for both problems, but when she contacted the manufacturer she was told this vehicle was not included due to vin.

My daughter used my vehicle last year. She opened the tailgate to put a bag of clothes in the bed of my 1998 chevrolet silverado and when she tried to close the tailgate the latches would not engage to keep the tailgate closed. After several attempts at closing the tailgate it finally engaged and stayed closed. As she began driving the latches again released and the tailgate fell open. Both support cables broke as described in thenhtsa campaign id number : 06v066000 for 1999 and 2000 chevrolet silverados and the tailgate fell off of the vehicle. I had to replace the support cables but the latches still do not hold and the tailgate continues to fall open on a regular basis. Just today 3/11/05 the tailgate fell open 5 times while i was driving.

While standing on the tailgate the straps broke throwingthe consumer onto the back of the cab.the consumer's vehicle is not included in the nhtsa recall.

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet silverado. One year ago while driving approximately 45 mph the vehicle lunged forward, began to accelerate and respond as if it were a standard vehicle. The failure occurred intermittently; however, more recently it began to occur every time he drove the vehicle. When the failure occurred the vehicle lunged forward and was within one inch of a crash forcing the contact to apply the brake pedal with excessive force. The contact stated that the transmission/ccc solenoid does not disengage while releasing the accelerator pedal. All of the warning lights on the instrument panel were illuminated. A complaint was filed with the manufacturer; however, they did not offer or provide any assistance. The contact replaced every component in the transmission in order to correct the failure; however, the failure continued to occur. He was unable to drive the vehicle for two days due to the safety risk. The contact added an on/off switch that controlled the tcc solenoid. The failure was not diagnosed by the dealer. The current mileage was 140,000. The approximate failure mileage 130,000.

Sudden acceleration; at 28,000 miles1st incident occurred when releasingbrake pedal after starting. Vehicle taken to dealer and had some repairs made. At 46,000 miles problem reoccured. Returned to dealer for some more repairs. Currently, at 48,000 miles problemreoccurring . Please feel free to provide any further details.

Ongoing problem with vehicle hesitating / stalling at a stop position. When applying the accelerator pedal carburetor flooded. Vehicle been inspected/repairs on two occasions, and been to two different dealers, and problem still reoccurring.

From early after we purchased the vehicle, we have had trouble.when you take your foot off the accelerator, it will oftentimes not slow down and sometimes even speed up.we have taken it to bale chevrolet on several occasions and told they could find nothing wrong.we wrote to chevrolet who contacted paul wilkerson at bale chevrolet who told them the vehicle is "operating as designed"even though he was aware of the problem and his mechanics had driven the vehicle around their parking lot at 40 mph without using the accelerator.we recently took it to another dealership and they informed us that gm/chevrolet was aware of the problem, but no fix had been found for it.this problem is, in my opinion, a safety hazard not only to us as the owners, but to others on the road as well.it seems that if gm/chevrolet was aware of the problem, they would have at least notified all the dealerships and owners and given us some options for remedy.

As described in the windshield motor failure issues concerning the 94 to 97 chevrolet pickup truck models, my 1998 silverado extended cab is experiencing the same exact defect. I have no idea how many failures it has had because it is a consistent problem. This issue has been going on since april of 2003 and has gotten progressively worse. I almost totaled out my truck in dallas back in october during a rainstorm due to system failure. They pretty much work when they want to. And its usually not when i need them. Same part as in 97 issues, same problem, but no recall or replacement. Really makes me want to buy another chevy truck!!! yeah right!!!

On 5-27-03 i was traveling in the left hand lane of interstae 83 crossing the south bridge, over the susquehanna river.it was raining hard at the time and my windshield wipers stopped working.i could hear the motor running but the windshield wipers were not moving.i was able to make my way to the shoulder of the road, with very limited visibility, and pull off the road without accident.when i took the vehicle for service the following day i was told that chevrolet was aware of the problem but no recall had been done to address it.the circuit board for the wipers needed replaced.the wiper failure had occured two other times in the past, but i was parked at those times and in no danger of an accident.

I own a 1998 chevrolet silverado, 4x4, extended cab, 1/2 ton and it has a malfunction of some sort in the windshield wiper motor or computer module of the wipers. The wipers will not activate when they are turned to the on position immediately as they should and once they finally do activate, they randomly and sporadically move and will not respond when i turn them off on the wiper controls switch. The vehicle is equipped with relay, variable speed and it does this no matter what speed setting it is on.once they have been shut off on the control switch, they continue to keep going until i literally shut the vehicle off. Then they stop in the upright, vertical potion. Living in arizona, i don't have to deal with a lot of rain, but when it does rain, it is a very frustrating and frightening time. I have a relative with a 1997 silverado, 4x4, extended cab 1/2 ton that has the exact same problem and he received a recall notice from general motors about this and has had his situation fixed. I want to know if my vehicle is covered under that recall. It was manufactured in 04/98. Please help find some information on this recall and what vehicles are affected.thanksneil. *nlm
