My son and his friend hit a bank head on and neither airbag deployed.i have talked to many different body shops and they told me this is really a problem with the 1996 and 1997 chevy trucks.i really think something needs to be done about this.this is a major problem.

The insurance adjuster said the main brake line to the back brakes was rusted through and caller said it was leaking fluid. The brake pedal went to the floor. There was a crash. One passenger w in callers vehicle sustained injuries.upon impact,the air bags did not deploy. There were no warning lights on the dashboard. The police came and a report was taken. Dealer has not been contacted yet. Manufacturer was called, but they have not called him back. The other vehicle had some damage to the rear, but caller's vehiclewas totaled.

Chevrolet was contacted approx. Feb. 20th regarding the airbag failure.they filed a report and said someone would check the truck out.i called again in april because i had heard nothing and the vehicle was close to being repaired, and was told someone had dropped the ball and the complaint never got to the appropriate dept.they are now telling me that because the vehicle is repaired there is nothing they can do.the only way i can have it checked is to pay for it myself.i think this is totally ridiculous!!!what happens if god forbid there be another accident and next time someone is killed???!!!
Consumer was traveling at 25-30mph in freezing rain and skidded into a tree.airbag did not deploy. No injuries.owner's manual stated that going 9-16mph impact at any angle, airbag should deploy.consumer called dealer, and was told thatat a minimumimpct of30mphairbagwould deploy. Vehicle shut down unexpectedly.
The postive side connection leaked acid from the battery causing loss of power to the vehicle.several times this occurred while trying to turn and gain access to the highway leaving the vehicle without power and sitting in the travel lanes.my mechanic was able to track down the problem and the battery was replaced curing the defect.
Headlights would intermittently go out while driving at night. Consumer would have to move the tilt steering wheel to get the headlights to come back on. Dealer was notified.
Dt:while driving she was experiencing hesitation, hit pothole and had to be towed home.upon inspection of the vehicle, the factory wiring inside the fuel tank to the fuel pump was burned up at the connector, only bear wiring was present in the fuel tank.fearful this may catch fire.hardwired this feature per owner who is also mechanic.appeared to be faulty wiring, definitely 4 pin connector at the top of that wire assembly.no other problems.
Vehicle experienced loss of brakes while towing a trailer. Consumer inspected the vehicle,and replaced two front brake hoses that erupted. Also, vehicle stalled while in motion. Vehicle had been todealer on two occasions, and they were unable to duplicate or resolve the problem.

Last year august,2000 fuel pump replaced by james chevrolet at 103,000 miles. Problem came back when consumer noticed vehicle stalling and not starting. In may,2001 problem was intermittent and dealer said they could not fix it if it was not broke, and tobring it back when it failed. Three months later failed and the sender kit was replaced along with fuel pump and melted wires were found inside the tank. Dealers service manager hadseenproblem,but not enough to be conbustible.
While driving about 35 mph vehicle just died.problem was due the fuel tank sending unit which shorted out.a mechanic stated that the truck could have exploded due to the burnt connector touching the fuel.dealer was called about the problem. T ruck was repaired at owner's expense. *ml

Intermittent problem, engine misfire at start, very rough idle, suspect poppet valve stick, obd code reads misfire on 6. Dealer charges 50.00 to read and says to use fuel injection cleaner. Cannot get it to dealer when it does it and they will not repair solely on error code. This has failed over 6 times. Shut motor down and let it sit for a while and it restarts just fine.,

Fuel is leaking from fuel line onto exhaust pipe.the consumer is concerned because of a possibility vehicle fire. The leakage is as a result of the way the fuel line is designed,the lines rub against the frame of the vehicle which causes a hole after a period of time.ts

Z71 truck transmission failed at 55,000 miles.gm states that my vehicle is in excellent condition & that there was nothing that i did to cause the failure.gm service bulletin (doc. #225207) states that the vcm can cause erratic line pressure with the 4l60-e transmission.although the bulletins are for tech. Info only, this service bulletin documents a known pre-existing defect that can "lead" to premature transmission failure due to the vcm communicating intermittent, erratic, unstable line pressure.the bulletin addresses the problem & potential "failure or damage" versus being informative & tools needed for the job.because consumers are not notified of bulletins, they end-up paying for these repairs out of pocket, never knowing they stem from factory defects & could be repaired for little or nothing.notification precludes additional problems & expense that could be covered by the warranty or hidden warranty (so called good will program).
While drivingtransmission exploded,resulting in a vehicle fire.manufacturer has been notified.when explosion occured there was a bad smell of transmission fluid. After pulling over the vehicle, heavy smoke poured out from under the hood, and the vehicle burnt completely.
Transmission started slipping and stopped shifting into 3rd gear at 50,000 miles. Was rebuilt at trans service shop. Cause was lack of ground wire between control module and transmission causing erratic fluid pressures. I paid the $1470.00 repair bill. Tsb described the defect, i was not notified. This was preventable from chevy's perspective.
When accelerating from a stop vehicle would not go into gear properly.vehicle would not go from one gear to another.dealer contacted.consumer states that the transmission is currently changing correctly, however now there is a fluid leak, dealer wants to charge consumer for these repairs.
While doing some repair work and by the vehicle being in the driveway,consumer noticed a tranmission fluid coming from the vehicle,and the tranmissionrubbing across the exhaust pipe.tranmission fluid was getting on the exhaust pipe.consumer took the vehicle to the dealer and they repaired the vehicle.
During blizard road conditions on way to work 4-wheel drive did not engage. I think this gave me a false sense of security and should be handled as a safety issue.

The transfer case failed.nlm
Since purchased from maher chevrolet in 2001, the "c clip" in the "transfer case" has broken three times and we have never used the 4 wheel drive.this occurs during normal driving!the first time was within months after owning the vehicle.the second time was 30,000 miles after it replaced.now less than 20,000 miles later, its broke again.there must be something defective internally in the transfer case.when driving and the "c clip" breaks, the gears start grinding loudly.you can not exceed 3 - 5 miles per hour. Since this is an instant movement, this can cause an accident wehn travling on the interstate.which my husband frequently does while driving to work.the warranty has expired on the vehicle and i don't understand why this problem has not been fixed since it was brought back to the dealer on two occasions and supposedly, fixed then.is the dealership the problem or am i dealing with unsafe defect with the transfer case. I will list the approx. Date that the dealership looked at my truck last, and then wanted to charge me over $2,500 to "investigate" why the "c clip" keeps breaking.

The entry to the rear seat did not work properly, the passenger side seat was sticking, dealer added lubricant but it still did not work properly, consumers child was exiting the vehicle from the passenger side, once out the truck he placed his hand on the seat and at that moment a passenger in the back seat tripped the lever and the back of the front seat came forward, the hinge of the seat cut the end of the childs finger off, the consumer believes a guard should be placed on the passenger seat hinge like the one on the drivers side seat.nlm

The welds, which attach the bucket seat to the seat tracks,broke. This caused the seat to move back and forth while driving.the welds that attach both front bucket seat to the slide rails are broke.the welds only broke on the front of both seats.when the driver's seat broke it caused the seat to rock into the back and caused the consumer to hit his head on the back window. *sc
I was involved in an injury accident. I had to make a panic stop in heavy traffic. There was no resistance to the brake pedal. The officers asked, if i had applied the brakes, beacause there were no skid marks. I feel the brakes failed because no skid mark and the seat belts didn't lock.i work for the statehighway patrol. We have several 1998 and 1999 full size chevrolet silverdo trucks. Several officers operating these vehicle have experience brake failure in a "panic stop situation. I'm asking to see,if your organization has information about the brakes and to send the complaint
Whenever a panic stop is required the brakes take almost a second after application before they respond.it is like pushing on an air cylinder with a small orifice - a second is too long to wait for the brakes.the pedal travel is correct and the dealer says it must be normal.i say it is unsafe after narrowly avoiding a crash that should have not even been close if the brake would grab as soon as i step on them.no matter how hard i push there is a time delay while i push "air through the orifice".

Vehicle was taken to bradshaw chevrolet on 03/06/2002.service manager stated there was no campaign currently under way to repair my vehicle under warranty.the problem is in the wiring, as i can wiggle the connection and the wipers will begin working.the brakes seem to take an inordinate amount of pedal pressure to stop, especially under emergency situations.i was told by the service writer @ kevin whittaker that there was no campaing for recall due to defects.

Brake system has always been "mushy" on application - downhill at any speed very slow to stop vehicle. Carr chevrolet did a complete brake overhaul, but there is still excessive pedal play - goes almost to the floor on downhill braking. On more than one occasion downhill stopping is almost nil at even speeds below 20 mph - there has to be a serious defect in this brake system.

The brakes on our 1996 chevy silverado 4x4 pick up fail to work properly. There is a delay between applying pressure on the brake & the truck actually braking. This problem seems to happen more often when braking & turning. I first noticed it when pulling into a parking space. The truck makes the same sound & vibration that happens when the anti lock brakes kick in if you're sliding on a slippery surface. This makes it impossible for us to trust that the vehicle will stop completely when needed. Caution is required to operate this vehicle. We don't dare tow anything or even load the bed of the truck with anything to heavy since we're worried that the brakes will not handle the extra weight. We're also worried about operating it in inclement weather which is fast approaching in the northeast. A mechanic told us that alot of chevy pick-ups have this same problem. We investigated this on the internet & found that gm did a recall for this problem on vehicles in canada but hasn't done one in the us yet. We also found out that the federal government is investigating this complaint, but it's in the early stages of it's investigation. We would like to see immediate action taken before this problem causes an accident which would result in serious property damage and/or bodily injury.

Driver's inside door handle has a weak metal part that fails when the driver pulls on the handle to open the door.to exit the vehicle, the driver must roll down the window and unlock the door from the outside.

On my 1996 silverado, the tailgate straps are starting to rust and break. I think that the recall should be extended because the recalled tailgate straps are put together the same was even if it is not the same model.

The vehicle was leaking on the passenger's side from underneath the dashboard. This happens only with the air conditioner on. Been to dealer & mechanic could not find cause of leak.
Ongoing problem with front alignment neededto be done every 3000-5000 miles. Also, intermittent jerking of steering wheel would occur while making a right turn. There are many examples of windsheald wipers failures on 1996 silverado trucks ,but gm says that the vin number dosent include my truck.i beleave you should expand this recall because its apparent that many other trucks have the same deadly problem.i suspect from my research on the web the ac and fuel pump problems are also common.i received my truck just after the strike. That was a big mistake .
As the gear lever was pulled from park to drive the vehicle suddenly accelerated although the drivers foot was still on the brake pedal, the vehicle traveled 20 feet before rashing into a parked forklift truck causing damage to the left bumper and wheel well.nlm
Consumer was at aparking lot with gravel pavement, and vehicle was turned off.he turnedvehicle on, put foot onbrake, and shifted gear into drive. Vehicle took off with speed, and vehicle went into office machinery.then it came with a complete stop.a mechanic looked over vehicle and found no problems with the throttle body, however did notice that the cruise control set was in the on position and felt that may have caused the problem.
While pulling into the driveway vehicle commenced to accelerate and lurched forward. Consumer was able to slam on the brakes, and turn the ignition switch off before any other damage could have occurred. Dealer was notified.

Once the engine has warmed up with the air conditioning compressor off, cruise control off and driving with the engine rpm between 1500-2000 rpm(regardless of which gear is selected)and you let your foot off the accelerator pedal the engine remains at the rpm it was at when you let off the accelerator pedal.the accelerator pedal is returning completely up and i inspected the truck per nhtsa campaign id # 96v057000 and the pedal is not sticking. I have taken it in to the dealer once and they could not find a fault codes on the computer but they reset the computer anyway and the problem went away for a few days and then got progressively worse again. A felloew coworker has a 1997 version of the same truck and has the same problem.it is very dangerous in heavy traffic when you let off the accelerator expecting the vehicle to slow down, but it does not!

The contact owns a 1996 chevrolet silverado. While operating the vehicle, the windshield wipers operated intermittently without warning. The contact discovered nhtsa campaign number: 03v159000 (visibility/wiper). The contact took the vehicle to wittmeier chevrolet (2292 forest ave, chico, ca 95928, (530) 895-8181) and was informed that the parts for the recall repair were currently on backorder. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 200,000.
Driving at approx 55 mph another vehicle came from right stopping at stop sign, suddenly pulled out from right sideof consumer vehicle, ending up hitting driver's side door. Windshield wipers do not work all the time. They do not go down to low position on glass when not in use. My neighbor had similar vehicle that came off the same production line in pontiac, mi within 3 weeks of each other. His wipers got recalled and mine did not. Go figure?we had the exact same problem.
