I believe that i also have a problem with my ignition and front panel.i can pull my key out in any position.everything lights up on the dashboard at one time or another.it has called my vehicle to stall or even shut down altogether.i don't understand why my vehicle has not been recalled.i have had it in several times but am unable to find out what the cause is.please help me.my truck scares me so much, i'm afraid to drive it, especially on the freeway, or roads that are blacked out for cell phones, and no way to get help.
On 01/10/2010 at 2:45 a.m. We were awakened by a passer by who noticed our truck was on fire. By the time the fire department was able to put the fire out it had completely destroyed our truck, our car ,our grandsons truck and $66,000.00 damage to the house we were renting. We lost our vehicles and 90% of everything we own. It was determined to be the engine block heater in our 2002 chevy silverado 2500 hd. We have been in contact with general motors. We gave them all the fire reports from both west valley city fire department as well as the report and pictures provided by the investigator. They do not claim any responsibility for the fire and will not compensate us for our loss.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd.intermittently, while driving various speeds, the contact noticed that the battery warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel.afterwards, the vehicle stalled.normally after the failure occurs, the vehicle is able to be restarted.in addition, the vehicle exhibited a no-start condition.the contact took the vehicle to the dealer on several occasions and they replaced the alternator, on-board assembly in the computer system, throttle plate, and reprogrammed the pcm.the remedies have not corrected the failures.the failure and current mileages were 138,000.updated 07/24/09.*lj
I own a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd, 8.1 liter, v8.in the past 4 months, the vehicle completely would lose power and shut off.after a few minutes, the vehicle would restart.it did not matter the speed of the vehicle, nor distance driven.there was no dash board lights on indicating any problems.i stalled several times in traffic, nearly missing/causing accidents.the dealer had vehicle for 3 days and said there was nothing on diagnostic showing problems.i refused vehicle stating i was not going to endanger myself or family till resolved.it was determined, after the gm blog and personal internet search of this vehicle complaints, the crankshaft position sensor was bad.the dealer replaced for a charge of $288.38 parts/labor at my expense.this vehicle needs a recall for this part and someone is going to be seriously hurt, especially when there is no indication of a problem showing.case #71-71437694 filed with chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438.
The car was operating normally as i was leaving the parking lot after shopping. The engine was at normal operating temperature. The engine stalled, lost power brakes and steering. This occurred five times in a period of approximately one week. The engine would restart after one minute or more. There were no ses or mil indications or dtc codes. I googled the failure and found several people with same problem. I also found a nhtsa recall 06083 for a 2001 year my vehicle is a 2002. I took the vehicle to the chevrolet dealer and had the crankcase position sensor replaced and that solved the problem. To elaborate on the problem it did occur while i was driving down the highway at 65 miles per hour. That is very scary and as this is a truck i could have been towing my boat. I do have the defective part. It seems to me that all the defective parts were not removed from inventory or the solution to the problem was inadequate.
While towing a 7000 lb 5th wheel trailer the electrical plug between the vehicle and trailer became partially dislodged and affected the vehicle electrical system which made the gauge needles go haywire including the tachometer. Engine stalled with resultant loss of power steering and brakes. Luckily was able to pull into parking lot and stop using trailer brakes. Reinserted plug fully into socket and have not had a problem since.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where it was diagnosed that the cam shaft position sensor needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 100,000. The vin was not available.
The contact owned a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. While driving approximately 75 mph, a message indicating that the engine overheated displayed and smoke appeared under the hood of the vehicle. The flames quickly spread to the cabin of the vehicle. While the flames were inside the cabin, the contact attempted to exit the vehicle but the driver side seat belt would not immediately unlock. The seat belt finally unlocked, but the driver side door would not unlock. The door eventually unlocked and the contact was able to exit the vehicle. The fire department was called to the scene to extinguish the flames. The vehicle was destroyed. There were no injuries. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 247,433.
2002 chevrolet silverado. Consumer writes in regards to engine fuel injectors safety recall. *ldthe consumer stated the vehicle required having the fuel injectors replaced multiple times. The vehicle was repaired twice under warranty. The consumer requested for the manufacturer continue to repair the injectors under the warranty.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. The contact had to spray ether on the intake in order to start the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vin was unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 145,000.
4 of the exhaust manifold bolts are broke. I now smell exhaust fumes in the passenger compartment.
As i was driving at 75 mph, the indicator light said, engine overheated. I then noticed white smoke coming from the hood. The white smoke turned black. I pulled over to the side of the road and before i could shut the engine off, the engine shut off on its own. Fire began coming up where the windshield wipers are located and proceeded through the dashboard. I tried to unlatch my seat belt but it would not release. After several tries it released. I attempted to open the door; however, i had the same problem. The door did not open. After bumping the door forcibly many times, it also came open. Mind you, all the while the flames are coming inside the cab. I called 911 and the county fire department was dispatched, but not before it was fully engulfed in flames. The vehicle was well maintained. I want to know what steps to take to prevent this from ever happening again?

I currently drive a 2002 chevy silverado 2500hd with an 8.1l engine.i've now taken my truck into four different mechanics for the same issue.my truck will randomly shut off the engine.i've had it shut off at stoplights, at highway speeds, driving around town, and everything in-between.occasionally, it won't even start.it sounds like it wants to turn over but to no avail.and when it stops, it takes about 5 minutes to finally get it restarted and driving again.of course, no mechanic can ever figure out what's wrong since it won't act up in the shop.i've had them tell me it could be a host of things from air problems to fuel line problems to electrical issues.no one can give me a straight answer.i've even had one mechanic drop my fuel tank to inspect the pump to see if it's the problem.even then, nothing acted up.there now is a code showing up saying my crank sensor is faulty.almost every mechanic is convinced it's my fuel pump but i have great pressure in the lines.i've noticed several people with my same year and engine have had similar issues.as well, i noticed there was a recall for the crank sensors on 2001 models but not 2002 models.why is this?i think there's just as many issues in that year as there are in following years.this issue can be a real problem if i lose power steering and wreck due to the engine shutting off!how is this not a recall for 2002 and yet a recall for 2001? i have yet to see a ses light go on for this issue.i've got just over 100,000 miles on this truck.please tell me that this will be a recall or at least this is the issue surrounding my problems!
Chevy 2002 silverado, with 8.1l engine, stalls without warning randomly.found problem code p0335 logged on diagnostic analyzer (crankshaft position sensor circuit a).contacted dealer and they informed me that there is a recall for model year 2001, but not 2002.scheduled for repair this week.
Two exhaust manifold bolts on a 2002 chevy silverado 2500 hd rotted and sheered off and one other does not seem to be as rusted and just broke off at the head of the bolt. This bolt failure could cause many issues, one being, possible fire in the engine compartment, or catalytic failure, o2 sensor issues, check engine light staying on.
I have a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500hd lt ext. Cab lb7 duramax 5 speed allison transmission, it has 114000 miles on it. This truck has been serviced as directed since new. The truck started using lots of fuel, at an idle it sergedbetween 700 & 900 rpm's, and oil started blowing out the blowby tube. I have just found out that 3 fuel injectors are leaking fuel, with a possible head gasket leak, filling my crankcase with diesel, causing oil to blow out all over the truck, road and whatever else it can land on. While investigating what to do, to fix the truck i've found 3 other peoplei know that have duramax's, and they are going through the same problems. It's going to take me a year to save the money i need to fix this truck. I'm even going to do the work myself. In my opinion gm should be ashamed. They shouldat leased pay for the parts. The cheapest injectors i've found are $225.00 apiece with a $125.00 core charge. It's recomended that all 8 injectors be replaced at once. I've also been told these engines have defective head gaskets. That will cost another $600.00 for parts, and $110.00 for special tools i need to do the job. When i forked over the $40,000 cash inheritince money to buy this truck, i didn't signup for this.
While driving under normal highway conditions, the engine has stalled three times in two weeks. This causes a loss of power steering and power brakes. At this point i have been able to safely pull off of the road, as it has not occurred during congested traffic.while searching the database i found similar failures of 2001 8.1l engines that were recalled to replace the crankshaft position sensor.
I own a 2002 chevrolet 2500 hd with the 8.1 (8100 vortec) engine. I had began having problems with the engine stalling while driving periodically. It became a frequent problem. I had the vehicle scanned at a local auto parts store with no fault codes showing. I learned the crankshaft position sensor was at fault by doing some online research. I also learned the same engine had a recall in 2001 and not 2002 the fact the vehicle stalls during operation is a serious hazard . Chevrolet needs to take responsibility for this and recall these vehicles . I changed my own , but chevrolet needs to fix this fast before someone dies if they haven't already !
Chevrolet 2500hd w/ 8.1 liter engine, stalls and hesitates. The engine will usually restart but will stall again. I stalled in an intersection and was nearly struck by a ford mustang. Dealership diagnosis - crankshaft position sensor.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that the vehicle would intermittently shut off.at times, it would run very rough but it would just suddenly shut off. He had to sit and wait a period of time before he could restart the vehicle. The failure occurred twelve times since july 2009. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop where the mechanic suspected that the failure was caused by a defective crankshaft sensor; the mechanic could not produce any codes after the diagnostic test was performed. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The current mileage was approximately 98,000. The failure mileage was approximately 85,000.
I own a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500hd with 8.1l engine. The truck has started stalling (engine completely shutting down) while i am driving at different speeds. This has happened at least 7 or 8 times now. This is very dangerous because you never know when it is going to happen or how fast you may be going. So far, i have replaced battery, battery cables, had the fuel lines serviced, and had the fuel injectors cleaned. After doing a little research, it appears that the crankshaft position sensor is the issue as is on many of these trucks. There was a recall on the 2001 trucks for this issue but not on the 2002 trucks for some reason. Costly to fix this issue. My truck only has 67,000 miles on it.
I have a 2002 chevy silverado 2500 hd 4x5 8.1, i have replaced the crankshaft position sensor a year ago and now i am getting the error code again stating its is bad again.this is not a cheap part and very difficult to change, what is the problem.
Upon starting my 2002 chevrolet silverado with duramax engine to move it backwards 40 feetto hookup a trailer, i had no apparent power assist on brakes or steering.a second attempt to restart the engine and back up resulted in the same result, no power assist on steering or brakes.a third attempt to move the truck proved successful.this is first time this condition has appeared on this vehicle.
Vehicle stalls suddnly while driving.no definite pattern to the stalling.stalls at least once a day.has been occuring for about the last year to year and a half. Will pull over, wait anywhere between 5-20min and the vehicle wil start again.
I have a 2002 chevrolet 2500hd pickup with the duramax diesel engine with just over 100,000 miles on it.recently, while sitting at a stop sign, darik smoke would come from the exhaust.it never did this before so i took it to the local dealer to find out what the problem might be.the dealer told me that the injectors needed to be replaced at a cost of about $4500.i contacted gmc, they set up a case file and got back to me in about a week to tell me that i was beyond the 7 year extended warranty and so they would not cover the repair.the fact that it only had about 1/2 of the 200,000 miles covered in the extended warranty didn't seem to count for anything.one of the selling points when i purchased the vehicle was that it should last for 200k to 300k miles without needing repair.the vehicle has been used primarily for personal transportation, not abused, with only occasional towing of a relatively light trailer.
2002 2500hd silverado with 8.1l gas motor stalling randomly for two months now, at least 3 times a week.took it into the dealer and crankshaft position sensor was at fault, which the dealer told me the 2001 8.1l has open recall but not on 2002!!last time i drove the truck i was nearly t-boned due to the truck dying in intersection.please everyone who has had this problem report it here!we need a recall on this cps before someone dies!i had dealership fix it to the tune of $400!!!!! chevy needs to own this problem!
Fuel injectors failed and have to be replaced.due to prior class action lawsuit warranty was extended to 200k miles / 7 years.at 8 years and 75,000 miles mine failed.gm refuses to replace / extend warranty.many other customers report same problem and recurring.cost to repair...$5200.gm should be required to recall parts, reimburse current and prior repairs.
We own a 2002 chevrolet silverado ls 2500 hd with allison trans. & vortec 8100 8.1 liter v8 engine.the check-engine light was coming on, the engine ran rough, and sometimes stalled completely, usually after starting up from a stop.our dealer replaced the crank sensor and we have had no problems since.however, we recently heard (and found information on your website) that 29 of 2001 chevy or gmc models had a recall for crank sensors (nhtsa #ea06016).is an investigation under way for the 2002 models?who do we need to contact?
As millions of other complaints for this same problem my 2002 chevy 6.0ltr exhaust manifold bolt heads are snapping off and burned the gasket out which now fire shoots out the gap and the exhaust is now filling up in the engine compartment and traveling into the cab. Also not to mention the emissions that are not being displaced properly and that it is ruining my catalytic converter. Not only does this pose a huge fire risk the flame that shoots out is directed right at the engine coolant sensor and is burning it, someone somewhere has swept this problem under the rug it's time to address this before someone gets hurt.do it now !!!!!!!! demand a recall!!!!!!!do it now!!!!!!!
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that while driving 35 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to a local repair facility where the mechanic diagnosed that the crankshaft position sensor was defective. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 94,000.
Crankshaft position sensor is operating intermittently causing vehicle stalling during normal driving.this failure is so far random and may or may not occur each time the vehicle is driven.no ses light accompanies this failure.so far engine will restart after 10-15 seconds with key off.this failure seems similar to nhtsa campaign # 07v521000 addressing the same issue on the previous model year of this vehicle.this failure has been ongoing for the past several months and seems to be occurring more frequently lately.
I have the 2002 silverado 2500hd with the 8.1l engine and i have random stalling while driving at any speed or even standing at a stop light. It has just started to not start from a cold start too. I brought it to the dealership and was told it was giving the crankshaft position sensor code as defective.there is already a recall on specific 8.1l for the 2001 silverado with the exact same symptoms.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. The contact was driving approximately 55 mph when the engine stalled with the illumination of the srs warning indicator. Prior to the failure, the contact noticed that the engine was performing roughly.the engine was restarted after cooling down. The failure recurred three times. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign id number 07v52100 (engine and engine cooling) but was advised that the vin was not included in the recall. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the cam shaft position sensor was being replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 71,000.
While driving down the road the vehicle dies out, and quits running.it then becomes hard to steer and stop.it takes about 2 to 5 minutes before starting back up, sometimes maybe even longer.it dies out any wherefrom 2 to 3 times a day, depending on how long and far i am driving.the speed varies from 10 mph up to 75 mph.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd.the contact stated that the crank position sensor failed while driving less than 55 mph.the vehicle completely lost power and shut off.after a few minutes, the vehicle restarted.the dealer replaced the battery cable and stated that the failure was remedied.the following day, while driving 10 mph, the failure recurred.the dealer performed a diagnostic and took the vehicle for a test drive.the vehicle failed again and the dealer stated that the crankshaft sensor was defective.they replaced the crankshaft position sensor.the failure mileage was 56,463 and current mileage was 64,000. Updated 10/16/08the consumer stated the 2002 models were recalled for this problem. Updated 10/21/08.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd.while driving 60 mph, the vehicle stalled and shut off completely.there was no power steering and the brakes were stiff.the vehicle restarted after a couple of minutes and the contact drove to his residence.the dealer performed a diagnostic and stated that the crank sensor was faulty and rendered failure code number p0335.the contact paid for the repair.the failure mileage was 98,696.

I have a 2002 chevy silverado 2500hd with a 8.1.two months ago the truck just stalled while i was driving it and then immediately re-started.since then there have been several occasions where the truck simply shuts off while i am driving.it has become progressively difficult to restart the engine.i stalled out in the middle of an intersection the other day and sat there for 2-3 minutes trying to start the truck.there seems to be no rhyme or reason to when or why this happens.my engine light has never been tripped by this problem.after reading the trouble codes and consulting with several mechanics we determined the problem to be the crank shaft position sensor.as i read through complaints on this website i notice this is a fairly common problem.it is also very dangerous.with the amount of complaints and the level of danger associated with this i would hope this would be recalled for the safety reasons.
I have the 2002 silverado 2500hd with the 8.1l engine and i have random stalling while driving at any speed or even standing at a stop light. It has just started to not start from a cold start too.this happens 4 to 5 times a day.
2002 chevrolet 2500 hd 8.1 liter v-8 gas engine, engine randomly shuts off while operating vehicle, will restart sometimes while still rolling and sometimes takes 30 minutes to restart.
20022500hd silverado with 8.1 engine. Two times it cranked with no start. Two other times it shut off at highway speeds with no warning of any kind. Changed the fuel pump and fuel filter. Finally changed the crank sensor. The sensor fixed the problem.
2002 chevrolet silverado equipped with duramax diesel engine, fuel injector bodies cracked filling engine crank case with diesel fuel. I found the condition before any damage could occur. If this condition was not caught like i did, the fuel in the oil would over flow from the engine crank case and spray under the vehicle potentially causing a fire. Vehicle was taken to chevrolet dealership where the fuel injectors are being replaced by a special campaign. Dealer was reluctant to replace fuel injectors due to not meeting all conditions mandated by gm.gm has extended warranty for this problem to 7 years or 200k miles, but has not done a recall. These fuel injectors have an extremely high failure rate and many leak fuel into the crank case which could be a potential fire hazard.
For the second time --last time about 3 years ago --the dealer tells me that the rear exhust manifold bolts have sheared off . I hear from other mechanics and the internet that this happens all the time on silverados . It is very expensive to repair .
Exhaust manifold bolts on 2002 chevrolet 2500 hd 6.0 l v8 are broken at the back bolt on the drivers side. The passanger side exhaust manifold is cracked between the 3rd and 4th bolt from the front. I replaced the bolts on the driver side, except for the back one that is sheared off flush with the cylinder head. The only way to get this particular bolt out is to remove the cylinder head from the engine so that a machine shop can drill out the offending bolt. The replacement bolts that i purchased from the gm dealer were a much sturdier bolt that had a much larger head on the bolt. To me this indicates knowledge that there is a problem and that gm is aware of it. This will most certainly lead to an exhaust leak that will cause the check engine light to come on. A vehicle with the check engine light on cannot pass a field emissions test and will result in a revocation of the vehicles registration until the problem is corrected. This is now a serious problem that is very expensive to repair.gm should be held accountable for the possible epa violations that this well documented issue is now causing. This vehicle only has 70,000 miles on it, very low for a 2002.
Broken exhaust manifold bolts.
Just regardinggm recall no. 06083 all 2001 silverado @500/3500 hd models with the 8.1l gas engines:all the crankshaft sensors are to be recalled in that year only when the problem exist in all 8.1l engines up to 2006.i had a 900 dollar bill from a dealership to try and fix this problem and then the problem wasn't even solved.i bought the part myself and installed it myself.i feel that all years should be recalled.this is a serious problem because the engine would fail while driving down the road a highway speeds.thanks
I have been having problems with my front running lights. There is always one burnt out on the front. I have replaced them several times, check to make sure the right fuse is being used, but everytime one burns out. I have also noticed now that about every gm suv or truck i see going down the road also has a running light burnt out..this seems like a safety issue that the manufacturer should have to address..
While trailering my boat on i29, 2002 2500 hd, driver front tire tread separated causing significant damage to fender, door, bumper, bumper cover, bumper valance, driving light, and fender flare.tire did stay inflated.i took pictures.tire firestone steeltex a-t.
Failing fuel injectors causing smoke out of exhaust on a duramax diesel truck. Gm knew of defect with injectors and only issued an extended warranty for 7 years/200,000 miles which ever occurred first. It was only good if you had an issue with the injectors at the time of warranty. I just found this out from a dealer and other owners of same type vehicle. If gm knowingly knew of these issues why did they not do a recall on said vehicles? it's really a matter of principle and moral ethics to do the right thing, rather than have the consumer take the fall for their lack of product design!

2002 chevrolet silverado 2500hd. Consumer writes in regards to vehicle blowing out diesel fuel *tgwit was determined the injectors were bad and the low side pressure lines were causing fuel to enter to enter the crankcase.
Fuel lines leaking. All lines need replacing.
On10/29/2011 the engine was blowing grayish white smoke.the engine started losing oil pressure.checked the oil, found diesel in the oil.the oil level was 6" higher on dipstick.it is the fuel injection system on the 2002 duramax diesel.the fuel injectors have failed.i understood that chevrolet has put a recall on all 2002 and early 2003 models.took it to derek scott auto park which is the closest chevrolet dealer/service department.after running diagnostics they told us that the replacement of the fuel injectors would be covered 100% by gm.later called back and said we would have to pay half in the amount of $2,251.88.they will not allow us to talk to the gm rep.we need to know if this is valid or not.we thought recalls were paid for by the company i.e. Gm in this case.thank you for your help in this matter.
My 2002 chevy silverado with duramax diesel engine broke down while on a trip from michigan to florida. The diesel injector casing failed causing the crankcase to overfill with diesel fuel then caused oil and diesel fuel mix to come out of the engine while traveling down the road covering the underside of the vehicle and roadway as well as vehicles directly behind me. The gm dealer in georgia stated we were in by mileage but out of the extended 7 year 200000 mile injector warranty by 1year and 4 days and the cost would be $6250 to replace 8 injectors. They offered a 10% discount off that repair. Subsequent calls to gm customer assistance were made to no end (they stated the 10% discount was their best offer). I pleaded that the time limit should not be a factor as this should not affect wear (injectors do not fail when they are not operating) my vehicle has 120000 miles on it (well under 200000 warranty as stated by the customer assistance rep). I paid extra for the diesel for longevity and fuel economy as i am on a fixed income but wound up being treated unfairly especially for a known problem and the fact that oil/fuel blowing out on the highway and vehicles is a safety and emissions defect. I would like someone from the nhtsa to consider investigating this aspect (time limit) and safety of drivers and fighting for me to get assistance. Thanks for listening
Diesel fuel mixed with oil overflowed on ground when stopped at rest area. Towed into raleigh. Was told it would cost about 7000 dollars to repair and take up to five days.was on my way home to ny. Thought recall might be available .is it?
Vehicle exhibited hard starting for a few days, and then was found with a large puddle of fuel under it in the morning, and was continuing to leak.upon inspection, all steel fuel lines, at every point of connection, and at every brace, have thick, scaly, flaking rust.the corrosion is severe.in most locations, nearing the point of failure, and in at least one spot, resulted in a pin hole leak, with a significant quantity of fuel leaking onto the vehicle and the ground.the steel brake lines were also found to have a similar degree of corrosion, and will probably fail in the near term.
I am concerned about the defective lb7 injectors causing a fire when they leak.vehicle 2002 chevrolet silverado hd2500 duramax diesel.also causing another driver to crash from the puddle of diesel left behind when i have injector failure as has happened and will again since gm has no suitable replacement other than the defective part.also curious about the total affect on the environment as this seems to be a common occurrence on 2001-2004 duramax diesels. Should i repair and then have concern of a vehicle fire?with my family onboard?
I had just gotten my fuel pump replaced at a local garage, was driving it home and found the brake pedal going almost all the way to the floorboards.i pulled over at the first safe place, found a fluid just gushing out around gas tank area on the drivers side.it had just rained for the last few days, so i thought it was just water.i drove a little further, then decided to drive it back to the garage, only about a mile away, after smelling brake fluid and verifying the my reservoir was seriously low.more dripping on the drivers side, this time i'm sick to confirm it is brake fluid.took it back to the garage, he said he'd look at it tomorrow, but i said i'd drive it home all of 2 miles down the street.got home no issues, cause i used the e-brake, and found the reservoir nearly drained.nothing around the wheels; this was the only leak.now i'm thinking the brake lines must have been seriously rusted (again!) and gotten disturbed when they replaced the fuel pump.i had this happen shortly after i bought the vehicle used, about five years ago.i paid good money back then to have the 'stainless steel' brake lines to the abs head replaced back then.why are they rusted through again!?!?! had no idea they ran up by the top of the tank, but hey, why not?i'm certain the line have rusted out again - why?!?!?they are supposed to be stainless steel; since when does stainless ever rust?i haul a 12,000lb fifth wheel; thank god i wasn't hauling at the time this happened (again!) and killed myself and my entire family in an auto crash.just sick of it; take care of your bad engineering chevy!
All brake hydraulic lines are rusted, all fuel supply lines are rusted, excessive rust on frame and other undercarriage components, brake rotors, calipers all covered with excessive. Rust. These defects have serious safety implications, which could result in injury or death to the vehicle occupants or others. Gm should be required to issue a recall on these vehicles and replace all major corroded brake components with non corrosive metals, brake fluid lines, fuel lines, rusted frames and any other components. Many accidents will be occurring because of braking failures and frame failure. This recall should be issued immediately before any other failures occur. These gm trucks also have defective steering boxes that feel loose when rounding corners. I have had a 1995, 2001, 2002 chevy and gmc with same problem they never stood behind this problem other than to put some grease in which was a temporary fix.
Failure of engine due to fuel injectors.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that the fuel injectors have failed. While driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle shut off on the highway. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle and it was towed to her residence. A warning light illuminated on the dashboard prior to the engine shutting off. The dealer was unable to diagnose the failure. A district manager stated that there was nothing they could do to correct the failure since the dealer was unable to duplicate or diagnose the failure. The failure mileage was 62,389.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. While driving 65 mph the vehicle stalled without any prior warnings. While coasting to the emergency lane, the engine warning light illuminated on the instrument control panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and a technician concluded that the fuel injectors failed. The vehicle is in the process of being repaired at the owners expense. The failure mileage was 91968 and the current mileage was 92000.updated 3/17/10 updated 05/06/10
Fuel leak - fuel consumption - lack of power - smoking - hard to start - no accelerating power.i have since started some research on this issue and come to find out that there has been multiple engine recalls in my same class from the same manufacturing company, however my vin# has not been recalled yet.i have lodged a formal complaint with the bbb and have addressed my concerns directly with gm however they have not taken any action to resolve this issue before it hurts or kills someone.
My abs speed sensor got sheared by back of my front drivers side tire in which i have seen on multiple sights a defect that was deemed a recall for being poorly set up on the assembly line. Secondly, ive spent thousands and looking online for a vary serious issue ive been having with my vehicle due to intermediate stalling, backfiring, and vehicle dieing due to what has finally been found to be the infamous crankshaft sensor. Replaced my computer, all 02 sensors, egr valve exc... Than upon looking and researching, i find it was a major one on recall as well for failing all the time. I just feel if these are factory errors and been on the recall, and my woman who travels with me that is paralyzed due to an accident, ishould be entitiled to the recalls giving they were known flaws on the asssembly line and a danger to others. When the vehicle stalls out, it starts choking, backfiring, and bucking and wants to lock up and loose control. Not cool. Ive been chasing this problem spending thousands in parts and repairs to make this truck safe for work and feel if therehas been recalls for all this, would be nice to reap something out of my investment in this truck
All my brake lines are corroded/rusting out. One line already had to be replaced. Very dangerous. All my fuel ines are starting to corrode and appear to require replacement soon.
My complaint is more of a question.how can a recall have a cutoff deadline, especially when the item recalled may or may not be bad?there was a recall on my injectors and i never new it tillthey went bad and i took it to dealer to fix and they said injectors had been recalled but recall expired.then, 13 months after having them replaced, 3 go bad and ya'll only offer a 1 year warranty when you replace them, how convenient.you have an expiration on a recall.
After arriving at my destination at 9pm as i exited truck , i smelled deisel fuel. Took a flashlight and looked under truck and saw diesel dripping off frame rail on drivers side of vehicle. I spent the next 5 hours affecting a temporary fix on the metal fuel line to stop the leak overnight. As i ran my thumb along the fuel line in an effort to isolate the exact spot of the leak, the leak went from a drip, drip, etc to a pinhole stream. There was absolutely no dent from external contact of any kind. I am the original owner of this vehicle. It has been well maintained and we do not live in an area of much winter weather ( salt corrosion ). The next day after a 3 mile walk to purchase some hose repair clamps, i improvised a sturdy patch which allowed me to drive the vehicle home more than 2 hours away. I have contacted chevrolet and will be taking the truck to a dealer monday 7/24. The rep i spoke with at chevy spent most of the conversation telling me that because of the age and mileage of the vehicle that the repairs were my responsibility. That's fine but i totally disagree with them. This is not a maintenance issue. It is a defective or poorly designed part that could easily result in fire, accidents and even bodily harm or the loss of life. There is absolutely no excuse for a leaking metal fuel line that has never been damaged in any way at all. From the internet forums for duramaxowners i see that this is not an uncommon problem. I assure there are many less than safe improvised fixes on these lousy fuel lines on the roads as we speak because gm is not accepting responsibility for this problem. This is shameful and incredibly dangerous. I also understand there have been issues with the metal brake lines as well. I like my truck a great deal, however this issue needs to be resolved. There are alot unsuspecting folks driving around dangerously.thanks
Stepped on the brake pedal to put the truck in gear and the pedal went to the floor. It blew out the brake line running from the abs block to the rear. I replaced that one and when checking for leaks, a line running from the master cylinder then blew out. I decided to replace them all at that point. The ac delco kit for my truck was back ordered and it took over two months for it to come. Now i am concerned about my fuel lines. Chevy, gm, please help! these are major safety issues! recalls!?!?!?
I have a 2002, chevrolet c2500hd pickup.the parking brake doesn't work because the rear axle seals are leaking grease onto the parking brake shoes.this problem started at about 80,000 miles.the chevrolet dealer said there are no service difficulty reports regarding this problem so they won't fix it.the dealer said the rear axle vent is okay and the axle is not over filled.the rear axle seals should not be leaking at this low mileage (both axle seals are leaking).the pickup has been well cared for, no off road use, mostly light passenger highway service with just a little trailer towing.the rear wheel bearings are not noisy and have very little play.
- when contact parks on a hill and applies the parking brake, quite often the vehicle tries to drift.the contact states that weather condition aren't a problem with the drifting.he has parked on a hill when it has been dry, wet or snowing and the problem continues. The contact is concern because he has brought his vehicle over and over to the dealership and they stated that there isn't anything wrong with the vehicle.the contact can provide copies of invoices if needed.
Parking brake does not hold vehicle after recalled repairs performed.dealer refused repair.
The holding clip for the oil pump inside of transfer case broke which allowed the oil pump to shake inside of case and consequently rubbed a hole thru t case which effectively emptied all the lubricating oil from t case ruining most of the parts inside.
While towing a 30 ft 5th wheel trailer the frame vibrates for a period of time between 55 to 65 mph. Feels like a drive shaft u joint failure as it seems to be progressively worsening over several recent trips, but may be due to road conditions. Not predictable between acceleration or deceleration, just starts to vibrate. Can be severe enough to be startling at times.possibly nhtsa #10021013 reference #3009. Have not found remedy listed anywhere.
Internal components wear a small hole in the rear of the case housing allowing the fluid to leak out without you knowing it. Once the fluid is gone the gears grind down to the point where the transmission locks up and you skid to a stop. I've been told this is still an on going problem all the way up to the 2010 model year.
There is a defect in the transfer case that results in a clip breaking loose and rubbing a hole in the rear housing, allowing the lubricant to leak out, which can cause the transfer case to fail and possibly locking up the wheels in an unexpected manner, causing a crash.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd.after the vehicle was driven 65 mph and then parked, the contact noticed transmission fluid gushing out from underneath the vehicle.he later discovered that there was a crack in the rear transmission adapter, caused by a faulty universal joint.the dealer has repaired the vehicle.the current mileage is 85,000 and failure mileage was 83,000.
Vibration clip breaks inside transfer case rubbing hole thru rear case half causing loss of fluid and ruining entire transfer case assembly. Repair cost approx. $2000.00.

Observed fluid leaking under the truck onto the driveway, and determined that a brake line had developed a leak. An independent repair shop said that all of the brake lines were severely corroded and should be replaced. I had this repair performed november 10, 2009, at a cost to me of $574.61. I still own this vehicle.
On may 9, 2014 i was backing up to hook up to a trailer with my truck.with absolutely no warning sign or indication, my brake line busted and i had no brakes whatsoever.the pedal went all the way to the floor.even at this slow of speed in reverse i could not stop and ran directly into the trailer.my wife was standing at the trailer directing me and luckily did not get hurt because of this brake failure.i had to use the emergency brake to get stopped, and even that was very sluggish to stop the truck.i am now finding out that this is common issue with these vehicle and there is an open investigation into this matter.gm needs to do something about this as the immediate failure of the brakes with no warning is sure to cause serious injury or death should it happen while driving down the road.
I was attempting to hitch up my travel trailer when i noticed that the brake pedal began sinking to the floor. I pulled away from the camper and tried to park away from it and lost all brake pressure and collided with my garage.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that the anti-lock brake system light illuminated for an extended period of time. The contact had to restart the vehicle to reset the computer, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the wheel speed sensor needed to be cleaned. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000.
On august 3, 2012 i was driving my 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500. At some point when i pressed the brake pedal it went to the very bottom and brakes did not work at all. The situation was very serious, since i was driving on the busy highway, state route 287 in nj. Fortunately, i was able to slow down the vehicle without an accident.because i use this vehicle for work, i took it to the auto shop and had it fixed as soon as possible.at the shop i found out that the vehicle is completely rusted underneath and all of my brake lines broke because of it.they had to replace 40 feet of brake lines and refill the brake fluid that was lost as a result of the broken lines.i was also informed by the mechanic that not only the brake lines, but fuel lines are rusted too.all of that has to be replaced.moreover, the vehicle?s springs and chassis are rusted too.i was told that the vehicle needs a special protective coating underneath to avoid that it falls apart.at this time i'm talking to gmc company regarding my issue, which does not mean that they will cover my expenses or repair the vehicle on recall basis.i've been told that they will do the investigation, and will contact me soon.i feel responsible to report such an unfortunate situation, so it will be investigated further, in order for others to avoid any accidents or deaths.
Brake lines rusted out a hole there are 4 lines grouped on the frame at 67000 miles 2 lines rusted out and at 131,000 miles 2 more rusted out both times . Complete loss of brakes pushes fluid out used emergency brake to stop 2 time almost rearended a car swerved right to avoid collision.have 2004 hd 2500 with same condition s at 48000 miles. Chevrolet needs to make this right to people .
Hard brake line failure. Brake line ruptured as brakes were applied. This is the 2nd hard brake line failure i have experienced on this truck.
Tried to make a slightly abrupt stop at 50 mph, felt a little abs pulse then pedal began to sink to the floor. Pumped pedal, i then got a little brake pressure and slowed a little.turned towards the shoulder and used emergency brake to slow truck down to a long eventual stop. Then towed.
When i started out of my driveway & hit the brakes, they went to the floor. Emergency brake slowed, but would not stop. Brake lines behind left front wheel on top of frame had hole(s) rusted in them & fluid running out. Emergency brake would not work properly because of leaking right rear wheel seal that had greased the emergency brake shoes. Truck had to be hauled to a garage, where it is now.
This vehicle is experiencing an issue with the abs module in which at slow braking speeds the brakes will not stop the vehicle correctly. There was a recall issued prior to this date for over 800,000 silverado trucks including the years 99-2002 for this exact issue. I contacted my dealership and i was informed that my truck is not covered by this recall even though it is demonstrating the exact symptoms described in the national recall by gm.
Had just exited the freeway and corroded brake line broke. Lived at the end of the road so was able to drive slow to at least get it home using the emergency brake. Examined all brake lines and all are so corroded they need to be replaced. Was lucky it didn't break away while on the freeway. Chevy tryin to kill their customers?
While driving i experienced brake failure.it was found that corrosion of the brake lines has resulted in a failure.
Lost sudden brake pressure.have no warning light.found a pool of brake fluid under middle of truck bed this morning.a brake line appears to have ruptured above the gas tank.i have read of numerous complaints with this same issue.thank god i discovered the problem at home and did not continue to drive this morning.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that while driving approximately 9 mph, the anti lock braking system erroneously activated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified and the contact was informed that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: 05v379000(service brakes, hydraulic). The failure mileage was 145,000.
Brake lines rusting , leaking, breaking and no brakes.
Brake line failure.this is my vehicle's third brake line failure due to rust.all of my brake lines have rusted to the point that the brake lines are not safe.the braking system is not safe.there is no excuse for such poor materials.stainless steel brake lines should have been used!my vehicle has been regularly washed during winter months of salt and debris.fuel lines are near failure as well.transmission cooling lines are rusting and leaking.oil cooling lines are rusting and seeping as well.rust has a much higher tendency where any of these lines are held in place by the plastic clips. (usually located along the frame) in addition, rust is forming heavily at transitions for all of the above lines.for example: rust is heavy where the fuel lines have crimped hoses attached.this is a major safety hazard.
While backing down driveway the brakes were applied.the brake pedal went completely to the floor with total brake failure.emergency brake was used to stop vehicle.upon inspection, two brake lines had rusted to the point of failure and all brake fluid was on the ground.my 1987 f-250 does not have brake lines this rusted.i am glad i was not in city driving when this occurred.i will have vehicle towed to dealership to have all brake lines replaced.
Middle brake line corroded in half causing brakes to fail. Now need to change all brake lines at a $289.00 cost with additional cost of 8 hours labor. Was told caliber bleeders are probably corroded too so will need new calibers. This has been an ongoing issue for the past several years. When will gm solve problem when someone finally gets killed?
Brake failure resulting in accident due to rusted steel line and loose (stretched) parking brake cable. Residential driving under 25 miles an hour i approached a stop light with my family in the car. Applied pressure to brake with about 100 feet from light. Brake pedal dropped to the floor. Immediately i applied parking brake. Vehicle failed to respond to both actions. The truck rolled through the stop light causing an accident. Main line feeding rear brakes abruptly failed causing personal and property damages. After having the brakes serviced and fixed, and thinking that the truck was safe, the power steering pump failed while driving on the highway at approximately 65 mph. Both steering and braking were non responsive. Had i have been driving on a residential road this could have caused a serious accident. However, the highway gave me ample time to slow down and get my family to the shoulder of the road. The truck was towed and diagnosed. A new power steering pump was put in. I am scared to drive the truck with my family in it. I do not know what is going to brake next.
Same story as every other 99+ silverado: the brake line burst behind cab and all brake pressure was lost.brake system defects are far more dangerous than a faulty ignition switch. Why are gm and nhtsa ignoring these complaints?
Hard brake line failure due to corrosion from poor quality parts without proper corrosion protection or correct materials (i.e. Stainless steel vs mild steel) when vehicle is used in areas where de-icer is used on the roads.
I was driving home in my 2002 silverado 2500 hd, when i can to a stop at the stop sign, my brake pedal went to the floor and i could not stop.my truck went through the intersection, but luckily there was no oncoming traffic.i brought my truck to a local auto repair shop, where they replaced just faulty brake lines due to them rusting out prematurely. My repair bill was over $1500 dollars.
All of the steel brake lines have major rust or corrosion and appear to be at the point of rupturing.
I was traveling on a cross country trip towing a 35 foot camper. I went to apply the brakes and the pedal went to the floor. I used the camper brakes to come to a stop.i took the truck to a nearby garage[in new mexico] where they inspected the brake lines and discovered they were severely rusted one had rusted completely thru. No warning light ever came on at any time during the 3 thousand miles i drove on that trip.

The abs light came on and the brake light. The power steering is bad and the steering wheel shakes when i brake, i got the brakes and rotors changed and the problem persisted
While parking, brake lines burst, almost pinned a person between my track and their parked car - probably would, have only broke legs/hips.upon inspection, all brake lines were severely rusted.all brake lines in the entire truck needed to be replaced (used stainless steel).upon investigation, saw this happened to millions of other chevy tracks, some involving crashes.
I have a 2002 silverado 2500hd with very low miles(63,868), extremely well taken care of vehicle. My problem occurred, fortunately for me, while i was sitting at a stoplight. As i sat waiting for the light to turn green, my brake pedal went to the floor. I wasn't sure what happened and thought maybe i'd pump my brakes up and everything would be fine. No such luck. I pulled over into a gas station and looked under my truck and saw my fluid leaking very badly, coming down over my gas tank. Since i had just left my home and was very close, i decided to drive it home and have a better look. As i drove the half mile drive, my brake fluid completely drained dry. Fortunately for me, there was no traffic onthe streets and no obstacles in the way. Anyway, when i got home and looked under my truck and saw that my brakeline looked like it completely exploded and was rusted out, i called my dealer and asked if there was a safety recall for these brake lines, and they informed me that there never has been. I made an appointment for them to repair my brakeline, so i had my truck towed to my dealer, and they preceded to work on my truck. As they inspected it, i was informed that "all" of my lines were rusted out badly and unsafe. This cost me approximately $700 to repair all of the lines, but my biggest concern is that this could have turned out a lot differently. We have 8 children, 12 grand children, and fortunately this vehicle was not on the highway with any of the little ones in it. I have been driving for over 30 years and i feel very fortunate that circumstances were what they were. Anyway, after surfing the web, i found that i am not alone, this in my opinion is a safety hazard and something should be done before a tragedy happens.
Driving up to city intersection was appling brakes, car in front applied his quicker causing his rear to raise up, indicating panic stop, i followed and applied hard pressure to my brakes, pedal then went to the floor and lost all brake action, this lead to my truck rear end of other cars
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the brake pedal was applied and extended to the floor without any response. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake line and hose needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure and current mileage was 92,000.updated 05/10/13*lj updated 05/21/2013
Brake lines were corroded and ruptured leaving the vehicle without brakes.vehicle left the road and ended up in the ditch narrowly missing trees.by shear luck this failure did not involve braking in town or to slow down in traffic.
On trip home from a vacation.pulling a 28 ft fifth wheel camper and a motorcycle trailer.on interstate 65 north bound when an older gentleman merging into traffic thought it was a good idea to come to almost a complete stop to let other vehicle merge in front of him. At which point i had to lock the brakes and just after the abs started to come into effect the brake pedal went to the floor.luckily just before i was going to impact the vehicle in front of me he pulled away.i took the next exit off the interstate pulled to the side of the exit ramp to discover brake fluid dripping on the ground just forward of the drivers door.inspected the brake fluid level to discover it was empty.all brake lines on this vehicle will have to replaced at an estimated cost from a dealer at $1500.00.this is a safety issue and should be in a recall status.
Brake line ruptured from small spot. Caused by corrosion. Breaks became soft pedal pushed to floor. Line was in the front of truck . All lines are found to be in poor condition related to rust on entire truck.
Steel brake line rusted out & leak while trying to stop pulling a trailer when trying to stop at stop signall lines rusted out. I am a auto mechanic and have 3 chevrolet trucks with rusted lines + a chevrolet cavalier car with rusted lines also all at the same time!
I just purchased my truck in june from a previous owner in south florida.as far as i know, the truck has been in florida since it was purchased new.on friday, november 8, 2013, i was forced to brake heavily at an intersection.i felt the anti-lock brakes activate and the truck stopped.i proceeded to the next intersection and was traveling approximately 50mph.when i stepped on the brake pedal, the pedal went to the floor.i immediately down shifted in an attempt to slow down.luckily, there were no vehicles in the right turn lane so i made a very dangerous right turn nearly striking vehicles in another lane.i attempted to brake again and only the passenger side rear tire would lock up.i was able to stop the truck with the emergency brake and distance.i thought the master cylinder went out but upon further inspection.a brake line has split and is expelling brake fluid.the location of the hole is where the brake line passes directly below the driver's door before the connection to the anti lock brake system. How is this not a recall.i could have killed myself or someone else.i have never seen a brake system failed where there is no brakes at all.
About two days ago when i pushed my brakes they felt spongy and when i pulled into my driveway i could smell brake fluid.today i went to move the truck to check it out. The brakes were even more spongy,so i pushed them hard and the brake line ruptured above the fuel tank.the front brakes would not stop the truck, so i had to use the transmission to stop the truck. It must have sprung a small leak two days ago when i noticed the fluid smell and spongy feel.good thing i wasn't driving on the road when it burst today, because it would not have stopped.
I was backing out of my driveway and the brake peddle went to the floor. The rear brake line on the drivers side blew out. It's heavy rust. All the lines look the same way. I can not drive this truck. It is unsafe and i will need to put around $700 into it to get it safe again.
Excessive metal brake line corrosion on this vehicle.brake lines corroded through causing an immediate loss of brake fluid and resulted in zero braking ability while vehicle was in motion on a busy city street.emergency brake was depressed to bring vehicle to a stop.inferior materials have been used to produce brake lines on this vehicle.brake line placement in conjunction with inferior metal that is prone to corrosion is at fault.cost to repair this flaw in manufacturing will be nearly $2000.00
As i was coming to a stop at a stop sign, i applied the brakes, but the truck kept going. Later on i examined the brake line and notice that it was corroded. I had the truck towed to my mechanic and he advised me that all the brake lines are corroded. I contacted gm, and they had a dealer look at the brake lines and confirmed that they were corroded.the corrosion is a latent defect and as i learned from your website and other blog, gm has a major defect that they refuse to remedy. I strongly believe that some one may get seriously injured, based on my experience. I was fortunate... Thank the lord!.
While backing out of my driveway i attempted to stop due to traffic traveling along the route i was entering. When i applied the brake the peddle went completely to the floor. Luckily i was able to stop with the emergency brake in time to avoid an accident with a trash truck that was traveling along that route. Using the emergency brake i was able to pull the vehicle back into my driveway safely and found that the brake line was corroded and was leaking just under the drivers side door. My vehicle is well maintain and i am often complemented for the care i take of both it's appearance and maintenance. The is no other area of this vehicle that is rusted and the underneath of this vehicle is in very good shape. I am the original owner of this vehicle and it has not been subject to any type of excess weather conditions. There is no reason these lines should have failed like this. I have been an ase certified auto tech for brakes and can tell you that is is not common to check the lines over the top of the frame during routine brake inspections and maintenance, only to check for signs of leaks in normal line locations and soft lines, calipers and other hardware related to the wheel area.
My wife used my 2500 hd 4wd pickup to go to work during inclement weather. She called me while driving and thought the road was icy because she thought she slid through two busy intersections. I asked her how fast she was driving and she said not real fast but the truck did not stop. I told her to take it easy and approach intersections slowly. She made it to work and home later that night (2nd shift) safely. The next morning i drove the truck to work and promptly drove right through a busy intersection near home with the brake pedal on the floor. Wife did not notice pedal since she is only 5'1" and didn't have pedal to floor. Luckily there was no traffic early in the morning or results could have been catastrophic. Got truck home and did a thorough check of brake system. Line from front of master cylinder to abs module on frame rail was rusted through. Other lines also looked like they were dug up from davey jones locker at the bottom of the ocean. I've owned this truck from new and have taken great care of it. My 1968 chevelle has better looking original brake line on it. Don't know what is going on but this is a serious problem, and not just brake lines from what i have read. Gm needs to address this through a recall before someone gets killed, if it didn't happen already. I did call dealer i bought truck from and they acknowledged knowing there is a problem, but offered no assistance other than free quote to repair (with oem steel lines). I bought an aftermarket set of ss lines for the entire truck and have installed both master cylinder lines so far. Waiting for warm weather for the rest....hope another doesn't fail in the meantime !
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. While the vehicle was stopped with the brake pedal engaged, the vehicle began to independently roll forward without warning. The brake pedal was depressed to the floorboard before the vehicle eventually stopped. The contact inspected the vehicle and discovered that the brake lines were rusted through. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 90,000.
The original factory brake lines rusted through in various places. The main line to the rear runs concealed from view and rusted, the lines going into the abs module are located in an area that develops corrosion too. My brake pedal felt week and went to the floor as the result of the brake line failure, luckily no one was injured . The brake line failure cost me a weekend trip that i had to use the truck for, at least a $2,000 loss plus the expenditure for the repairs.
Had to get on the brakes pretty hard, the line under the drivers side floor burst due to rust and corrosion.
I own a 2002 chevrolet silverado ls hd2500, original owner purchased in june of 2002, currently have 71,000 mile, beautiful truck very well maintained. This is my second complaint being filed on this vehicle concerning my brakes. My first complaint was filed in march of 2014, when my brake lines rusted through and i was left with no brakes. After searching on-line, i found that this is a known problem for these vehicles and there is a recall on some of these vehicles, but not all of them.my complaint today also has to do with my brakes. Once again, i found that some of the vehicles have a recall, but not all of them . The anti-lock brake system would activate, causing my brakes to not work. If i wanted to stop, i couldn't slow down to stop, i would have to brake hard to stop my vehicle, if i tried to slow down to stop, my anti-lock brake system would activate, causing my brakes to not work. I did contact gm, and was told that there was nothing they could do to help resolve this problem with my vehicle because mine was not included in the recall, even though some ofmy year, make and model had a recall notice. They are well aware of this problem, because they do have a bulletin out informing the dealer how to resolve this problem.once again, this is the brake system, very dangerous, could be fatal. Not sure why this isn't a priority to resolve.
Brakes failed ,pedal went to floor; main line from master cylinder sprung a leak, noticed all lines near drivers side inner fender rusty , had wife pump brakes; brake fluid sprayed. I replaced main lines to distribution block and one front line. Called dealer he said they new of this problem and told me to check rear line going over gas tank. I will replace it soon . Any of these trucks still on the road need to be repaired .i've driven this truck since it was new.
When i applied pressure to the brake pedal, as i backed up in my driveway, the pedal went to the floorboards.i stopped the vehicle and looking under the truck saw a puddle of brake fluid.a closer visual inspection revealed a leak in the brake line feeding the rear wheels (next to the fuel tank).i inspected the remaining lines and all appear seriously deteriorated.i will need to have all the brake lines replaced.i feel fortunate that i had not left the driveway when this brake system failure occurred.and, just as a side note, the frame of the truck, particularly the cross pieces holding the spare tire and bracket for the shock absorber, have rusted to such an extent that it will have to reinforced/replaced.corrosion this severe could be expected of the sheet metal, but not the frame.
Brought my truck in for an oil change, they come in to tell me, hey, your brake line blew. I went down to check it out, the lines are pretty severely rusted, and sure enough brake fluid was leaking out one of them. Brakes go totally to the floor, absolute minimal brake pedal pressure. Goes right to floor every time. It doesn't counteract the loss of pressure by allowing the back brake pressure to still work (the front line was the leaker) like gm says they should. No braking at all. Had to drive it home with e brake, and replace all corroded brake lines. I've heard of lots of others having the same issue, gm brake lines aren't up to par.
While driving on city streets , i went to stop behind a car at a stoplight and the brakes went to the floor with no warning. I hit the car from behind and luckily no one war injured but minor damage to the rear of the car was observed. After the incident, oil continued to leak from the line under driver side door, the warning light did come on but after the accident had already occurred. This was the first failure. Brake line was repaired and a year later, the second brake line failed on may 23, 2014. While pulling boat out of boat ramp, i went to stop the truck and the brake pedal went to the floor again , luckily not going fast or down an interstate. Again the leak was from under the driver side door, but was the other parallel line going to the abs block. This is a serious safety issue and i was very lucky twice. All brake lines will be replaced with stainless steel lines. I will not buy another gm product unless they make this right.
All my brake lines are corroded/rusting out. One line already had to be replaced. Very dangerous. All my fuel ines are starting to corrode and appear to require replacement soon.
While performing an oil change i noticed severe brake line corrosion. The truck was immediately taken to my local mechanic for inspection and is now having all brake lines replaced. Thankfully the brake lines did not fail while i was driving or towing a trailer. I have a 1989 chevy silverado 2500 that hasn't had corrosion problems like this newer one. After some googling i found out that there is an investigation in to this matter and that many owners have had their brakes fail while driving. The nhtsa needs to step up and hold gm accountable. Sure, it will be an expensive recall but if gm does the right thing it will show that they care about the safety of americans and will make many brand-loyal customers happy.this matter is very serious, especially considering what the majority of these hd trucks are used for...hauling, towing, etc.
Repeat occurrence on 6/22/2013. First occurrence was in approximately august of 2010. Brake lines severely rusted. Have kept under watch, however the rate of rust seems to increase. With this last incident, all brake lines will have to be replaced, costing well over $1000. Verified with 3 locals garages that this is a well documented problem for this year and around this year of chevrolet trucks. They have all had to do repair due to very poor quality materials used for the brake lines. This truck is primarily used to pull a horse trailer. I feel we were fortunate that the issue did not occur while towing.gm should feel very luck. If there would have been an accident while towing the horse trailer,gm would have had a major lawsuit on their hands. As it is, time for them to do the right thing and initiate the recall.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that while reversing from a drive way, the brakes failed to stop. The contact noticed brake fluid leaking from the brake line. The contact was able to use the emergency parking brake to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.
I went to move the truck to hook up a trailer and the pedal went to the floor.looked under vehicle and brake lines were rusted and brake fluid everywhere.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that while driving 60 mph, he attempted to engage the brakes but the petal abnormally traveled to the floor board. The contact stated that after inspecting the vehicle he noticed that the brake lines were corroded. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 107,000.
Corrosion in the brake lines caused a blowout of the brake lines and failure of the brakes.
Experienced complete brake failure without any warning lights due to rusted brake lines.the placement of the antilock brake controller three feet behind the drivers side tire at the top of frame and no apparent corrosion protection seems to have caused this to happen.
Rear ended a lady and her baby yesterday after hitting the brakes only to find them go to the floor and had no brakes.brake lines are excessively rusted and one burst. After talking to alot of people this seems to be very common on early 2000 gm trucks. Just lookedat my wives 2002 yukon and its worse than my truck.
Vehicle was towing trailer in hayfield and brakes went out.the vehicle was in 4 wheel drive low and in 1st gear.my husband got it back to the barn which was about 1/4 mile away and then it had total brake failure.the brake light never came on and our brakes were not old.we found a leak in our main brake line and my husband pinched the line off so we would have some front brake so we could get the truck home so we could work on it.he removed the line and it was so badly rusted, that it had gotten 3 major holes in the line and we did have major brake failure.the line is was very rusty in several places, but the worst is where the cab and bed come together.upon researching we have found that this model has a problem with the line rusting and causing brake failure.we regularly haul horses to horse shows and haul other heavy loads on the road.i can only imagine what might have happened had we been on a major highway and this happened.we bought our truck new and maintain it well.we have never had lines rust on anything like this and never had complete brake failure.we feel that this is a safety issue that needs to be addressed.it is very expensive repair, but it is serious.we make sure we have seat belts, air bags, emissions are low and i feel that brake lines should be made out of a material that will not rust out and cause a major failure.this happened so fast - we had brake and then we didn't have brake.i thank god that we were in the hayfield.we have talked to several people that have had this happen and we also talked to a repair shop that said he had a lot of these come into his shop also. We just want this made known and it should be a recall, but also a wake up call to use better materials.
While towing an 8000lb horse trailer at slow speeds, i attempted to brake and the brake line at the driver side front wheel broke and leaked, leaving me on the expressway with no stopping power.all brake lines were completely rusted out with less than 50,000 miles on a 2002 well maintained, recently checked over 2500hd.totally unacceptable situation, and one that sounds commonplace.
I want to add another case to your investigation of brake line failures on gm trucks.i live in maryland and have a 2002 chevy silverado 2500hd with only 40,000 miles on it.my brake lines rusted through in three separate incidents this year.first, the front wheel speed sensors/abs system failed in april, 2010.next, in july, the front part of the lines gave way when being backed out of the garage after getting an oil change.that garage replaced the front part of the brake lines only.finally in september, the rear brake lines rusted through right in my driveway.luckily, i was not traveling at speed for either of these events, but it was a major expense and inconvenience, especially having it happen twice like that.i also had the line on the power steering fluid cooler rust through in the april repair, and there is way more rust in general on the undercarriage than there should be.the body and engine are just fine.i hope your investigation leads to a recall.
Upon applying the brakes, the brake pedal "dropped" to the floor and all braking was lost. Driver was able to downshift and use the emergency brake to stop safely. Upon investigation of the failure, the steel brake lines located below the drivers seat, under the cab, were found to be heavily corroded and ruptured due to the corrosion causing a complete loss of braking power.
Brake line following frame along driver's side ruptured causing hissing and loss of brake fluid around the rear wheel well.brake line corroded.pedal went to the floor with no braking to stop the vehicle. Slowed with loss of momentum and pumping the brake pedal.
Was driving on road when driver pulled in front of me, i had to a quickly applied brakes to slow down.when pushed down the brake pedal just went soft and mushed down.no braking ability was possible.had to swerve into on coming traffic to avoid major collision.other cars swerved outof my way.~300 yard down the road the truck finally came to rolling stop using lower gear auto transmission to slow truck down.after stopping saw brake fluid pour out of front engine compartment.upon return home saw no sign of leaks in driveway. Also there was not visible loss of brake fluids level nor softening of brake pedalprior to this sudden and complete loss bakes.fluids are checked atleast monthly. So brake line or lines ruptured suddenly without warning. The potential for disaster is huge.the hydraulic brake lines appear to have to thinned out from excessive corrosion and then burst (not leak) when heavy brake pressure is applied which is the worst time for brakes to fail. This is personal use vehicle not used for commercial work.however it is driven and used in the snow belt in the winter.if you own one of these trucks and live in the snow belt completely inspect replace your lines before someone dies.failure point was in front area under hood near left wheel right on bracket where 4 lines bend.these are large vehicles and the failure gave no obvious warning signs prior to failure.
2002 chevrolet silverado.stopping from slow speed at intersection anti-lock brakes engaged, truck shuddered, would not stop, hit vehicle directly in front of.have experienced brake issues with vehicle since date of purchase.was taken in for recall, but dangerous brake problems persist.vehicle is unsafe to drive.
Complete brake failure when i applied the brakes to stop. All brake lines coming out of the block by the driverside front door are rusted beyond recognition. Rear break line failure occurred in 2010 same brake line condition. I keep my truck clean and do not off road with it.
I was driving south on md-235 in lexington park, md when the light at the intersection of md-235 & fdr blvd. Turned yellow.i had little room to stop and applied the brakes forcefully, slowing to approximately 25 mph when the pedal went to the floor and i ran through the intersection as the light turned red.no cars were in front of me; an accident did not occur.i used the emergency brake to stop and opened the hood, thinking i had a brake master cylinder failure.i noted fluid dripping from underneath the chassis by the driver's door, & on further inspection, found a rupture in a corroded brake line.i drove home using the emergency brake (rural area; approximately 12 miles), lightly pressing the brake pedal when stopping with the emergency brake to turn the brake lights on.once home, i found virtually every steel brake line throughout the vehicle badly corroded.an internet search provided information that this is a prevailing problem with 1999-2004 chevrolet trucks of all models.a problem this prevalent with this high of a safety concern needs a manufacturer's recall issued for these vehicles.i am the second owner of this vehicle.
Dear nhtsa,i was reading this article (i.e. Link http://trucks.about.com/b/2010/04/08/brake-line-corrosion-suspected-in-gm-trucks.htm) and this prompted me to contact you. I have a 2002 chevy silverado 2500 pickup truck. Due to corroded and excessive rusted-out brake lines, i experienced total brake line failure causing me to get into an accident. This happened in november of 2008 and; i only had 50,825 miles on my vehicle at the time.luckily for me, i was (for the most part) in stop and go traffic.if i wasn't, i truly believe things could have been much worse resulting in severe injury or death.this happened on route 495 north, a three-lane highway near lowell massachusetts.as it was, i rear-ended a pickup truck in front of me that subsequently hit the vehicle in front of her.fortunately... No one was seriously hurt.i don't even want to think what might of happened if i was doing 65 - 70 mph and had to avoid another vehicle or brake quickly.i contacted gm about this but never received a reply back.my total failure of brakes was verified at the scene by the tow truck driver (certified ma mechanic), the state police person, my insurance company, and lannan chevrolet of lowell who had to replace every bit of brake line(s).
I was going north on route 106, laconia, nh in my 2002 chevrolet silverado pick up truck. A school bus in front of me was about to stop. When i attempted tostop my vehicle, the brakes failed causing my vehicle to strike the back of the bus. There was a trail of brake fluid in the road prior to the point of impact. Upon inspection of my vehicle the police officer found brake fluid leaking from the area of the master cylinder. My vehicle sustained extensive damage and required towing. The bus received minor scratches to the rear bumper.
The rear brake line on my 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500hd rusted out and failed while towing my fifth wheel camper.fortunatly the camper brakes were functioning properly and i was able to stop without incident. I removed and replaced the rear brake line when i got the truck home.as i was pumping the brakes to bleed the air out of the new line the right front line failed.it was at this time that i realized how lucky i was to have avoided a potentially deadly incident. Upon inspection of the rest of the lines i found them all to be rusted to the point that i will be replacing all of the lines on the truck.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd.upon entering the vehicle he stepped on the brake pedal and the pedal depressed to the floor.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where he was informed that the brake lines were corroded.the vehicle was in the process of being repaired.the failure and current mileages were 70,000.
My 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd was having a problem with the abs system activating at slow speeds when the wheels were not actually sliding.although the wheels were acting exactly as described in recall bulletin 05068c, i was told by the dealer that my truck was not covered even if the problem was due to front wheel speed sensor corrosion as described in the recall.i also called the gm customer assistance center at 800-630-2438 where they also said my truck is not covered even though the vin is within the brackets in the recall.i was given a case number of 71-774131746. I took my truck to larson chevrolet in superior, wi on november 10, 2009 where they inspected my front wheels and found the corrosion described in the recall.i had them repair the corrosion at my expense.i then contacted customer assistance again and they agreed to forward my case to a district specialist. After a couple conversations with the district specialist isaac i was told that my truck would not be covered because 3/4 ton trucks were excluded.no reason for excluding 3/4 ton trucks was given.it seems to me that gm was in error when 3/4 ton trucks were excluded because my truck had the exact problem described in the recall.i would like to see the recall expanded to include 3/4 ton trucks and to have my expenses of $206.47 reimbursed.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. While driving approximately 10 mph, the contact applied the brakes but the vehicle did not stop and was involved in a crash. A police report was filed but no injuries were reported. The vehicle wastowed to an authorized dealer where the contact was told the brake lines failed due to severe corrosion. The brake lines were replaced. The failure mileage was 86,000 and the current mileage was 86,500. Updated 02/14/11updated 03/14/11 updated 03/29/11 updated 03/30/11
I was using my chevy silverado to tow my horse trailer (horse on board) to a weekend event. By the time i arrived at the camp ground i realized that my truck's brakes were not as firm as they should be and the brake pedal was getting lower and lower. I left my trailer at the camp and drove my truck to a nearby garage. A mechanic located a leaking brake line directly beneath the driver's side door and noted that all the visible brake lines looked corroded. I topped off the brake fluid at the garage and after my camping weekend i was able to carefully drive the truck and trailer home but i had to use the trailer's brake controller to increase the trailer braking to assist the truck braking. During the following week the truck was taken to a gm dealership and they did a so called repair by splicing new pieces of aluminum brake line into the corroded original lines.
2002 chevy silverado ,brake hydraulic lines failed coming to a stop, found line failure due to excessive rust corrosion to brake lines above left frame rail . As i am a auto technician for chrysler and not have seen such rust on brake lines unless vehicle has 200,000 miles or so.this vehicle only has 36,000 miles .ifeel that the material the lines aremade out of are inferior raw materials. I have replaced the lines that were leaking and plan to replace the rest at some time making them my self with something that may hold up better to my seat belt location.with that said if general motors decides to wake up and recalls thebrake lines i would appreciate some restitution,i noticed like me many people have experienced the same issues and had there vehicles repaired and were reimbursed for their troubles.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd.while driving approximately 40 mph, the contact noticed that the vehicle would vibrate when the brake pedal was depressed.the failure occurred on several occasions while braking at less than 10 mph.several mechanics stated that he needed to replace the front wheel speed sensors located in the hub.the manufacturer has not been notified.the vehicle has not been repaired or properly diagnosed.the current mileage was 49,080 and failure mileage was 47,000.
The brake lines on my 2002 chevy 2500 hd completely blew out causing me to go through a red light ending up in the middle of the intersection.
While coming to a red light, i lost the ability to stop. Upon inspection i observed severely corroded and rusty brake lines and fluid leakingfrom one of the brake lines.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. While driving approximately 25 mph, the brake pedal was applied which extended to the floor without any response. The vehicle failed to slow down and in order to stop the trailer brakes were engaged. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the abs module's main brake line was replaced. The failure recurred and the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for the second time; however the main brake line connected to the master cylinder was replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 71,662.
I was moving my 2002 chevy silverado 2500 hd from its normal parking spot to hook up to out towable rv. While aligning to the rv suddenly the brake pedal hit the floor. I noticed 2 more brake lines have ruptured. Yes 2 more, i have already replaced 2 brake lines. As of august 14 2011 i have written an email to chevrolet as my vehicle sits in the driveway with ruptured, rusted brake lines. I do not even want to imagine the consequences of a ruptured brake line while empty or towing our rv at normal driving speeds. I truly feel my family's life is at risk in this vehicle. Furthermore i can speculate that the resale value has been effected. Morally i could not sell this vehicle knowing there is a major safety issue looming.
A brake line rusted through in the front of the truck. After looking under the truck, i found that all the brake lines are severely rusted and look as if they will fail at any time. All brake lines will have to be replaced before this vehicle is safe to drive again. After checking on the web i have found thousands of other complaints and still there is no gm recall.
Hydraulic brake line going to rear oftruck failed due to heavy exterior corrosion. Truck is a 3/4 ton crew cab with an eight foot bed. The point of failure was near where line crosses to top of frame near a loomed wire harness approximately under rear door of cab. All brake lines on the truck are heavily corroded.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that while driving approximately 4 mph, the brake pedal extended to floor upon engaging. There was a significant delay in the brake response. The failure recurred whenever the vehicle was in motion at low speeds. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the constant malfunction. The approximate failure mileage was 129,016. The vin was unavailable.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. The contact was driving 25 mph when the brakes were applied and failed. The failure caused the contact to crash into another vehicle. There were no injuries. A police report was filed and the vehicle was towed to the dealer. The dealer confirmed that the brake lines were corroded and needed replacement. The manufacturer was not contacted, but the vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 75,000 and the current mileage was 114,000.
Brake line failure on my 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500hd. I was very fortunate that the line broke at home while i was parking my trailer. Apparently there is a major problem with the steel lines rusting out prematurely. If you go on the web and look up brake line failure for this year vehicle, you will find many.
Brake lines rupture and brakes fail.i've had this happen three times and in researching this problem have seen on-line that it's quite common with my brand of truck.
Complete corrosion of brake line and failure of brakes.
2002 chevrolet silverado 2500hd 4x4 had complete brake failure on 3/7/2011.it appears all brake lines are severally corroded and leaking in multiple locations.truck is used for personal use and not commercial.it does not plow snow and we live in zip code 20197.the incident luckily happened in the drive way and there was not an accident.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
After traveling on the highway for sixty miles, the truck was baked for traffic at highway exit. The bake pedal went down almost to the floor. The truck did slow down, but braking was not normal. Upon inspection it was found that the brake lines coming the master cylinder to the abs and from the abs to the front brakes were rusted and one line had a hole and was leaking. Four brake lines were replaced.
Brake lines from the master cylinder to the abs control unit and from the abs control unit to the front wheel brakes are rusted through. This occurred on june 9, 2008. The vehicle is only six years old and the brake line should not rust through that quickly. This is a dangerous condition as all of the brake fluid is pumped out of the master cylinder and you then lose all braking on the vehicle.
Brake line failure and loss of braking due to corrosion of rear brake lines.brake line was rusted completely thru.all brake lines have severe corrosion.
Corrosion of brake lines on a 2002 chev 2500hd, failure in winter of 06, line repaired. Failure in winter of 08, line repaired. In 08 all lines show signs of flaking, delaminating and corrosion.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds and depressing the brake pedal, the anti-lock braking system would activate. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who stated that the wheels speed sensor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.
Abs is not functioning correctly, at low speeds abs is activating and braking distance is increased.
I am the original owner of a 2002 chevy 2500hd pickup with 65,000 miles.i experienced a total failure of the brake system on 28 aug 2010 due to a ruptured brake line. The leaking line was in the vicinity of the driver's door and all lines were heavily corroded. Leak was large enough to fully drain the brake fluid reservoir. Failure happened while parking truck at home.no accident occurred, but i was lucky. This failure could have caused a fatal accident.repair of this defect will require replacement of all brake lines on the truck. In my opinion, the root cause of this brake failure is a poor choice of materials (plain steel) for the brake lines. Chevy should have used a corrosion resistant material.
While pulling out of parking lot of inspection station on to side street, on slight hill, i depressed my brake pedal and it went all the way to the floor. The truck slowly stopped even though i was only doing approximatly 5 mph. When i got out and looked under the truck i saw brake fluid coming from under the driver side of the truck. The inspector had told me that the lines looked to be corroded and i would need to get them replaced in a few years. Once the brake failure occured he came and looked again and was shocked that it was an instant braking.
Excessive brake line rust and failure with loss of service brakes on gm light trucks. Irecently had an experience where the metal brake lines broke unexpectedly on my 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500hd light truck. The brake pedal went to the floor while attempting to stop at a neighborhood stop sign. The vehicle had to be stopped from approximately 10mph using the parking brake and downshifting. No accident occurred. A local service station found that most all of the vehicle's brake lines were excessively rusted. All brake lines were replaced at a cost of $650.
Rusted brake lines.
Without warning my 2002 chevy 2500hd lost it's brakes almost causing an accident.i found that the brake lines had rusted under the left wheel well. I called chevy and they stated that it was not a known issue. They refused to help or discuss the issue with me. I asked to speak to a supervisor and the told me that there was no one else i could speak to. After doing some research online i found that it has been widely reported.
Rusted hole in brake line.
Brakes were lost in 2002 chevy silverado 2500 hd when brake line burst because of rust and corrosion issues.
I own a 2002 chevy 2500 hdand the last couple of months i noticedthe anti-lock brakes activate at low speed.i thought this was related to winter snow/ice but this continues on dry pavement.i called chevy customer service and was advised there were no listed recalls for this vin. Found nhtsa recall 05v379000 & action # pe05020 lists exact symptoms of vehicle every time breaks are applied at low speed. Estimated time and cost to repair 2 hours at aprox $180.00a chevy dealer was called and i was advised they cannot repair withoutauthorized recall per the vin.this safety issue should apply to the listed vin.
While driving my 2002 chevy silverado 2500hd truck and attempting to stop, the brake pedal went to the floor.inspection revealed the brake line from the master cylinder to the proportioning valve under the cab of the truck had burst due to a very rusty brake line.inspection revealed that all the brake lines are very rusty and need to be replaced.
I am the original owner of a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500hd pickup truck. On 12/11/09 while driving the truck, i applied the brakes and the pedal went completely to the floor, leaving me with no brakes. Fortunately, i was going very slow at the time and was able to roll to a slow stop with no damage or injury. I found that my brake lines were rusty with a hole entirely through one place. I did an internet search on 'silverado" and 'rusty brake lines' and found numerous other irate owners with the same problem. I contacted general motors and was told i would need to have a dealer inspect the truck before any additional action could be taken. This is the result: i was charged $175.09 for hauling the vehicle 20 miles to the nearest dealer and 'inspecting it; yes, the lines were rusted out as i had told them; general motors will provide no further action because the problem may be the result of 'low mileage'; and the dealer wants to replace the brake lines for $1000.00. I live in north carolina and have driven and worked on vehicles for over 50 years and i have never before had a hole rusted in a brake line. The sudden and unexpected loss of brakes has to be a deadly disaster waiting to happen.
The brake lines on my 2002 chevy silverado 2500 hd corroded and ruptured leaving me with no brakes! i was on a camping trip in tennessee and luckily caught it at the campgrounds. This condition could have ended in tragedy! i pull a 33 foot fifth wheel camper and the vehicle brakes are a must especially going down mountains! i had the drivers side brake line replaced immediately at a goodyear service center at a cost of $180.00!
Complete brake line failure as a result of loss of brake fluid due to extensive brake line corrosion.brakes failed during normal driving conditions on i-78 in northern nj.symptoms included brake pedal going "to the floor", as well as greatly reduced braking effectiveness.this is the second failure of this type on this vehicle.the first occurred on 1/24/2007, and is covered under nhtsa report odi #10180807.this new failure was repaired by the dealer, konner chevrolet, in west caldwell, nj.
2002 chevrolet 2500hd pickup truck. While my daughter was driving the truck, both steel brake lines from the master cylinder failed causing total loss of brakes.truck was towed to dunlap-johnson chevrolet co.,inc. 919 e liberty st , york, sc 29745-2689 (803) 792-4152.chevrolet was called at 1-800-222-1020 and case # 71-742-720900 was opened.i was contacted on july 21 by caroline lucero from chevrolet who stated that the brake lines failed because of environmental conditions in the ne united states.having brake lines that can fail without warning causing the brake pedal to go to the floorboard while providing no stopping effort is a very dangerous situation.thankfully no one was injured in this instance; however i suspect that the brake line failure is premature based on the age and mileage of the vehicle and possibly caused by defective materials.i am saving the brake lines in case they are wanted for testing or inspection.
Main brake line for rear axle failed. Causing diminished braking ability and partial loss of vehicle control entering corner. Causing my truck to enter on coming traffic lane until control was regained. Examination revealed rear brake line failed along frame rail above gas tank. Brake lines appear to be very corroded. I have been told i must replace all the brake lines as they are all corroded.
I have a 2002 chevy silverado 2500hd nearly caught fire yesterday.a leak developed in the power brake booster/hydro-boost system and power steering fluid was leaking onto my hot exhaust manifold.smoke was pouring from under my hood.i suspect a small fire because of the amount of smoke.by the time i pulled off the road and opened the hood all i saw was smoke from something leaking on the manifold. I got online and found this recall information for 2004-2005 chevy trucks but not 2002.i wanted to inform you that there may be a need to recall 2002 silverado trucks as well.researching dieselplace.com and dieselpage.com this problem is common and widespread.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------march 2005dear chevrolet customer:this notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the national traffic and motor vehicle safety act.reason for this recall: general motors has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2004 model year chevrolet kodiak and certain 2004 and 2005 model year chevrolet avalanche, express, silverado, and suburban vehicles. On some of these vehicles, the hydraulic brake booster's pressure accumulator may crack and/or separate from the hydro-boost assembly during normal vehicle operating conditions. If a separation were to occur and the hood of the vehicle were open, fragments from the accumulator could cause injury to people in the immediate area. In addition, the presence of this crack or fractured surface could allow the hydraulic fluid to leak from the accumulator circuit of the booster assembly. The loss of fluid would cause increased steering and braking effort.what will be done: your chevrolet dealer will inspect the hydraulic brake booster, and replace it if necessary. This service will be performed for you at no charge.
Brake line failure due to corrosion while driving my 2002 chevrolet silverado hd2500 pickup.brake pedal went to the floor and could not stop, could only stop by using the emergency brake.scary.the line failed that follows the frame just in front of the drivers door.
Late on july 30, i had a single vehicle accident. I was driving down the interstate / toll road on the way back from the airport. I had cruise control set to 75mph. With no warning, my rear wheels locked up. My truck skidded into a bridge. State farm recommended my vehicle be taken to purifoy chevrolet for repairs.when i was notified by purifoy and state farm that my vehicle was repaired, i asked the purifoy shop manager, my state farm agent, and my state farm claims representative if the vehicle had been inspected for the cause of the locked-axle condition which caused the crash and injured me. All stated the vehicle had been inspected, repaired, and certified safe to drive.i paid my deductible and drove home the vehicle and parked it in my garage. Within days, i used the vehicle and the axle locked up again - badly worsening my physical injuries from the first crash and causing me to be put into several more weeks of physical therapy.i am still under a doctor's care. And, i am still in physical therapy recovering from the injuries. My physical therapist has noted into my medical records that the second occurrence greatly prolonged my healing by adding additional injury to that which previously occurred from the first crash.after this second occurrence, i took my vehicle to a local shop. The shop manger locally stated this was a well-known condition of chevrolet trucks: the rear axle vent tube was manufactured too small; the tube plugs; this forces axle grease into the emergency brake hub; the emergency brake becomes saturated and swells to close proximity to the hub; when the brake heats up, it automatically applies and cannot be released until the wheel rolls slightly backward. The local shop manager replaced both axle seals, cleaned and resized the vent, and installed new emergency brakes. This corrected the locked wheel/axle condition.
2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd ext.cab short bed 85,000 milessudden failure of rusted steel brake lines.happened at a stand still-no accident.no vin# available as truck is in the shop.
During braking my 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd's abs is activated when the vehicle is almost stopped. It happens intermittently but seems to be getting worse. The failure has not yet been repaired. I confirmed with chevy that there is no open recall on this vehicle but there should be.
Driving down highway, applied brakes to feel the pedal go to floor. Able to stop and inspect after some distance. Rear steel brake line under truck bed had corroded through, and with a push of the pedal, brake fluid sprayed everywhere. Had to have line replaced from diverter box under cab to rear crossover at driver rear wheel, badly corroded! now it is march of 2012 (107,000 miles), and the front lines from the master cylinder to diverter are leaking as well. Thankfully i noticed before driving. I am having the bad line replaced, and i am looking for a stainless steel replacement for all lines!
I was pulling into street from ally and when i applied the brake, they went to the floor and left a puddle of fluid in the middle of the truck frame, luckily i was not in traffic or this could have been damaging.
2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd without warning, exhibits very soft brake pedal accompanied by sensation that brake pedal "goes to the floor," apparent activation of abs, and difficulty stopping safely.original equipment front brake pads and rotors are inspected by service facility and deemed acceptable for continued use at this time.rear disk brake pad and rotor inspected and deemed unserviceable due to premature failure apparently caused by extensive, progressive undercarriage corrosion that was observable from delivery date of vehicle when purchased new.rear brake pad inability to "float" due to extensive corrosion caused premature rear pad and rear rotor failure. Brake lines are also observed to be corroding in an excessive, premature manner as are vehicle frame and trailer hitch structural components.observation of similarly situated pick-up trucks manufactured by others do not demonstrate corrosion of this excessive magnitude.
I was driving my 2002 silverado 2500hd when the vehicle in front of me spun on snow and ended up 90degrees across the road in front of me . I braked but the pedal went to the floor and i had to drive up onto the shoulder and missed crashing into the car by a foot or two . I brought the silverado immediately to the dealer . They told me my brakeline had rusted outand now want $2500 to repair . They say the other lines are also bad and need replacement . The vehicle is now at the dealers while they order parts .*ln
Silverado 2500 hd v8brake & rotor replacement37,800 mileswe purchased a brand new 2002 chevrolet silverado hd 4 x 4 from fitzgerald auto mall. The truck was pampered, no rough off road excursions, even kept it in the garage. With only 37,800 miles we were literally shocked to discover all four rotors not only had significant rust but metal was actually chipping, flaking, and crumbling from the rotors. All four rotors had to be replaced along with the brake pads. The pads had worn but not [repeat not] down to the "wear sensors" and were replaced for safety reasons. The cost for the repair was $1,150.00. We have other vehicles "none of them manufactured by gm" and never experienced this type of wear or damage to rotors. The only safety recall we were advised of affected the tailgate cables. The tailgate cables prematurely corroded and failed. The national highway traffic safety administration should be alerted as this poses a significant safety risk for anyone who unwittingly experiences this problem. Left undetected these rotors would have failed causing an absolute and sudden loss of braking capacity. If ford motor company had to accept responsibility for recalling millions of unsafe firestone tires - why hasn't this problem been addressed by gm?

When applying the brakes when coming to a stop, the antilock brake system activates, causing the vehicle to take much longer to stop, and feel as though it may not stop.the problem became progressively worse and was a safety issue which needed to be corrected.although this problem is well documented for chevy vehicles (case #05v379000), we did not receive a recall notice.we took the vehicle to a dealer, who confirmed that the vin was not one of those recalled.i called chevy, who also confirmed that the vin was not included in the recall.because it was a safety hazard which could have resulted in an accident, we had the vehicle fixed.the dealer charged us to correct it, with the same exact solution as in the recall.the antilock brake sensors were removed, cleaned and put back in, correcting the problem.it seems as though the 2002 chevy silverado hd pickup was excluded from the recall, even though the same problem exists as in the other silverado pickups.it is even more of a safety hazard since it is a heavier truck.chevy needs to recall all of the vehicles that have this same problem, or at least cover the expenses for those who bring it in for service for the same issue as recalled in other vehicles.
Dt*:the contact stated while driving 5mph and applying brake pressure, there was a pulsation within the antilock brakes followed by an increased stopping distance.the vehicle was inspected by a dealer who determined there was corrosion on the brakes and the front wheel speed sensor and rotors needed to be replaced. Antilock brakes are activated every time i use my brakes. My truck needs longer stopping distances to come to a complete stop. I almost got into a major accident. There is a recall on 1999-2002 chevy silverado anti-lock brakes in my state of michigan but i have not received a notice and gm says i will not get one. I own a 2002 silverado.

2002 chevrolet k2500hd , the anti-lock brakes activate at slow speeds during gentle braking. Same trouble as described in nhtsa campaign # 05v379000 / chevy recall # 05068. I have the same symptoms as described in this document but my dealer and the gm cust. Serv. Line both advise that my truck is not included in the recall. Service manager at local chevrolet dealership said $230 for the same work as stated in the recall plus $80 for each sensor if they break when being removed which they seem prone to do. Or he said that i could pull the fuse to the abs system, but they could not.gm customer service contact said they could not help with the break problem but offered a coupon for other service ie> oil change.
Dt*: the contact stated when slowing the vehicle to a stop, the abs system failed when the vehicle slowed to 10 mph and caused the pedal to vibrate badly and the vehicle continued forward motion for another 5-10 feet.the service dealer repaired the problem.the manufacturer was notified.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. While driving approximately 5 mph and depressing the brakes, the abs activated erroneously. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics where the technician stated that the front driver side speed sensor was corroded and would have to be cleaned. The failure continued after the speed sensor was cleaned. The contact replaced the front passenger side wheel bearing, hub assembly and speed sensor independently yet the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 133,000.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. While the contact was driving approximately 25 mph, the brake pedal fell much farther into the floorboard than usual and the vehicle would not decrease in speed. The brake pedal was applied numerous times before coming to a stop. The contact was able to resume with caution. The vehicle was inspected upon arrival at the residence to find the brake fluid leaking onto the ground. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer. The contact stated the vehicle was taken an independent mechanic prior to the failure for an unrelated repair where the technician detected the brake line exhibited severe rust corrosion and stated the vehicle was unsafe to drive. Also previously, the vehicle was taken to the dealer for a second opinion and they informed that there was not a problem with the brake line. The contact was waiting on a response from the dealer regarding the recent failure at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 24,500.
I have a 2002 chevy silverado 2500 hd truck with 80,000 miles. The steering wheel 'play' has become progressively more sloppy since i purchased the new truck. It is difficult to safely remain in my designated lane when at highway speeds.there is about 6-8 degrees of steering wheel travel from side to side before the front wheels turn in either direction.additionally, the steering wheel column, steering shaft, and intermediate shaft make clunking noises while going over the slightest bump in the road, and while turning.the vibration is felt in the steering wheel. It has done this since the day i purchased it, and grown progressively worse.my local dealer could not initially diagnose the problem (while under warranty). I've discovered a chevy service bulletin 02-02-35-006a, which has had mixed success.additionally, many other owners i've spoken with have had identical problems.(chevy service bulletin no. 00-02-35-003kidentifies seven different models that have the same mechanical problem.).i am most concerned about the possibility of steering failure while driving.a recall should be initiated to remedy this safety issue.
On july 23 2008, i was backing out of a parking spot and i lost all steering, the pitman arm sheared off. I had installed the fab-tech pitman arm, idler arm, tie rod ends, and steering stabilizer kit. I found out later that the pitman arm, and idler arm, had a recall. I contacted fabtech via email and they told me who to contact about the recall. I later got transferred to another guy at fabtech. He sent me instructions on how to go about the recall to get refunded the original purchase price and get a check for the installation and front end alignment and they are also suppose to send the new idler arm and pitman arm. Fabtech asked that i box and ship the old parts to them and they would then inspect them and send the check and parts. I sent the parts in and then they decided they were not going to honor the recall. I had complete steering failure, luckily i was in a parking lot when it happened. Just hours before i was on the highway. A recall is a recall and they need to honor it for me as well.
The abs light came on and the brake light. The power steering is bad and the steering wheel shakes when i brake, i got the brakes and rotors changed and the problem persisted

Chevrolet silverado 2002 and others have a serious brake line rust out condition. This can cause loss of brakes and crash. The lines should not rust out on 6 years.

Experienced tire separation at 70mph of a firestone steeltex radial a/t lt245/75r16 load range e m/s. Tire separation damaged the right rear quarter panel and forward rear quarter panel. Took the truck to a tire store to have the other tires inspected. The remaining tires where all found to be separating.
Trailer reliever hitch bent after normal use towing travel trailer. Proper weight distributing hitch was being used on interstate highway. Winds may have been contributing factor.hitch must be replaced.
