Vehicle was traveling down a state highway when it went off the road, down a short embankment, hit at least 2 trees before coming to rest.the collision was a frontal collision and the vehicle was a total loss.the airbag, however, did not deploy during the accieent.

Driving on roadway and hit a concrete mail box air bags didn't deploy had surgery on my left arm broken left leg fibula had a bowel blockage hit a illegal construction mail box made of concrete blocks and rebar airbags didn't deploy

On september 27, 2010 while driving a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500 pickup my husband ran off the road and his truck crashed in a ravine.his airbag did not deploy causing him a severe brain injury known as a dai.he spent 84 days in the hospital and had to learn to do everything again.he may never fully recover from this accident completely.had his airbag deployed i believe his injury would have not been nearly as serious.he was driving down the interstate.thankfully there were no other vehicles involved.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that another vehicle in front was making a left, the driver slammed on the brake pedal but the latch failed causing the passenger to go through the windshield during the impact. The driver proceeded to hit a third vehicle that was at a stop sign.the other driver was found at fault by the police. The front passenger seat belt latch failed to restrain and caused the front passenger injuries at the face, arm, and left wrist. The front passenger air bag failed to fully deploy and caused the passengers head hit the windshield. The driver suffered injuries to the stomach. Medical attention was provided to both injured. The police department was present and a police report was filed.the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact also wanted to add that tsb seat 10-08-50-003b describes the seat belt failure. The vehicle was towed to the driver's residence. The failure mileage was not available.

I own a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The brakes failed while attempting to stop the vehicle in a 35mph zone. The brakes initially worked and then the pedal went to the floor. I could feel the abs engage but not stop hitting a vehicle in front of me. When i exited the vehicle i could smell the brake fluid and observed fluid leaking from multiple locations. The air bags did not deploy. The driver of the vehicle sustained injuries. A police report was filed. The vehicle is currently being repaired by the manufactures dealer.

The contact owned a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that the brakes failed while driving downhill. As a result, the vehicle was crashed into a tree. The air bags failed to deploy. The driver was injured and the vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was not notified. The speed was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

I hit someone almost directly head on going about 50 mph and my airbags did not go off.

After exiting the off ramp of i264 in portsmouth, virginia i sped up to approximately 35 mph and approached the next stop light.upon applying pressure to the brake pedal no resistance was noted and the slowing of the vehicle was found negligible.i rear ended a vehicle in front of me at approximately 25 mph.both cars involved in the accident were pulled into the median out of traffic.as i exited the vehicle i noticed fluid dripping from the truck frame at the forward hinge of the driver side door.the dripping fluid was brake fluid.i suspect a ruptured brake fluid line or tube had ruptured which caused the loss of braking power.there was no warning given by the vehicle's computer to warn of low brake fluid because the reservoir was still at the normal level.i believe corrosion of the brake lines was accelerated due to the use of salt treatments on the roads during the winter snow storms that have fallen in the past three years.luckily nobody was seriously hurt and luckily this did not happen when i was exiting the interstate at a much higher rate of speed.also the air bag did not deploy upon impact.these are two serious safety issues incurred in once incident to a truck which has less than 70k miles and 12 years old.

My son's 2002 chevrolet extended cab pu truck was struck in the drivers side door, forced off the road, went head first through an iron 6' fence, down a 7' embankment and struck a stone pillar head on and his air bad did not deploy.

While running an errand at lunch an 18 yr. Old boy came across 2 lanes of traffic to do a u-turn right in front of me.i was traveling at approx. 45-50 miles an hour with a green light when i hit his smaller truck head on.the air bags did not deploy in my silverado.this is the 2nd gm vehicle that i have owned and been in during a serious crash where the airbags did not deploy.something needs to be done about this!

Employee was traveling on the interstate, had to brake hard to avoid traffic, and was struck in rear by a vehicle doing approx 50 mph. It pushed him into vehicle in front damaging the front of vech.no airbag deployed!the force of the impact knocked him unconscious.

I pulled into driveway and put car in park, left engine running. Went to door of residence to get my kids. Kids went out to the car and were yelling fire! i seen the inside up in smoke. I reached inside to turn engine off. We then started pouring buckets of water into seat and on floor around the seat to try to prevent spread of the fire. I luckily put the fire out. Fire dept unhooked battery and removed melted plastic around seat. It seems a wire somehow shorted out beneath seat and caught the seat and floor on fire.

Lighting for gear and mileage indicator has been going out intermittently.

On december 19th 2013 was at a class for work about 65 miles from home, when came out of class and truck would not start keep getting security light flashing in the information window. Later found out this cut the gas of from someone stealing the vehicle, but i had the original key to the truck. Had to have vehicle towed back to my home 65 miles away. A certified mechanic looked at the truck for me and said he believed he had fixed it by replacing the ignition wiring harness.truck worked great until recent i was traveling down a the highway at 65mph and the key to the vehicle fell out of the ignition onto the floor, lucky for me the vehicle stayed running. I have recently been looking at the ignition and have found that any position that the key is in rather it be running or auxiliary the key can be removed from the ignition. Also the truck is back to showing the security light flashing in the information center and truck will not start. I have to leave the key in the on position and wait 10 minutes before the truck will start. This seems to be a problem with chevy!!!!!!!

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving approximately 50 mph, the security system warning indicator illuminated and the engine stalled. When the contact restarted the engine the headlights and instrument panel lighting became dim. The vehicle was repaired by a certified mechanic with the replacement of the battery. The alternator was diagnosed and was functioning properly. The failure occurred repeatedly. The contact detected that the failures were contributed to the body control module. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 103,000.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, the driver side seat belt would suddenly retract and prevent the contact from moving. Also, the contact indicated that the ignition key became lodged in the ignition switch and could not be removed. In addition, the abs sensor light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the abs pump motor was defective. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 168,000.

I have a 2002 chevy 4x4 pickup that has intrmitent no brakes at slow speed 3 to 10 miles per hour it has hapened 3 times in the last 2 weeks . They tell me the front wheel speed sensors are to blame ?

Abs recall for 2002 chevy pickups issued in sep 2005.issue was while iwas in slow moving3 to 5 mph abs system would activate and can cause a potential crash.recall was to perform a inspection of the abs system.clean and apply a rust preventive and confirm sensor was receiving proper signal. My pickup was serviced at our local dealership in november 2005.this pickup was not having any issues with abs system at that time of service.the dealership change out the passenger side sensor (due to rust) and performed the required maintenance on the driver side. Now 36,000 miles later i almost had two accidents in the same day due to the abs system activation while stopping in slow speed. (i can detail the potential accident later)the abs was only coming on at random and not all the time.i found out from the dealership and g.m. Once the pickup was service the recall had been taken care any other issues if up to the owner to take care of. My complaint is in just cleaning and putting rust preventive in place is not a long term fix but only temporary fix and the safety issue still exist in the salt belt states.the test method is to hooking the system up to a diagnostic evaluation.this test showed the sensor was dropping off at a low rpm and causing the abs to active. The issue can be caused by rust coating the sensor face or the receiver face. The dealership was planning to change the sensor before even testing to be defective. Because it is likely the sensor will be damaged in the removal process.my point is, this can and will happen again and is a high risk to damage.property, persons. In this case the recall fix only lasted 36,000 miles.i only have 86,000 mile total on this pickup.my family and other families are at risk with out a permanant fix to this abs system. Is a one time recall fix the normal with oem's on recall even thought the fix did not fully fix the recall issue?please review and get back with me.

Ignition switch won't start engine.replaced switch and had no improvement.turning key several times may result in starting or not.there seems to be a delay in ignition when it does start.an on-line review shows i'm not the only one with this problem.i have safety concerns when i or my wife uses vehicle to shop and risks being subject to predators in parking lots when truck won't start.

Positive side post on ac delco battery corroded off and leaked sulfuric acid all over truck.

My car is old but it has been running fine, and i keep up with regular maintenance and oil change appointments. I came out of walmart after buying groceries and when i tried to start the car it sounded like it was trying to turn over, but it wouldn't actually start. After 30 minutes of sitting in the car trying to get it to start it finally started. I took the car to my regular mechanic and they could not find anything wrong with it. They cleaned the battery cables in hopes of relieving the problem. Now a week later it did it again 2 times in the same day.

The vehicle will not start due to a problem with security system or pass lock.i sometimes have to wait up to 2 hours beforethe vehicle will start.

I smelled something burning but could not find any fire. Later i noticed the 5 sp ac fan switch on my 2002 chevy silverado was only working for speeds 3-5. When i went to the chevy dealer they said this was a common problem and the wiring and blower resistor needed to be replaced.

The anti-lock brake system engages at slow speeds causing inability to stop. The road surface does not matter, wet, dry, dirt or paved, it is a failing system. This was a random problem, now it happens all the time. The system will make a ratcheting sound then a grinding before as you come to a stop. You have to be ready to let off the brake and reapply pressure hoping it works. I live in a neighborhood with small children running around everywhere. I would hate to think what would happen if these brakes failed me when i really needed them.

When i started the engine the gas gauge went to full then back to 0.later when i went to use the tow/haul it would not work, it wasn't long before the odometer and shift indicator stopped working.

Using the key the ignition turns on and truck starts as it should, anytime the key then could be taken out of the ignition at anytime. Ignition can be clicked back to accessory and the key can fall out when driving. Note changing from run to accessory it easily done.

The contact owned a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. Odometer, and shift indicator goes out, and you cannot tell what gear you are in or your mileage. Warrenty replaced instrument cluster a couple of years ago. But nowit is happening again. I was told the cluster was bad again and needed replacing. But it goes off and stays off for a week or longer and the next thing you know its back on again.i have unplugged the connecor from the cluster and replugged it in and the cluster would work again, only for a short while. Local repair shops has told me they have been regularly replacing these clusters. This could cause accidentally placing transmission in wrong gears, causing injury and accidents.

While driving vehicle began to smoke from engine compartment, noise came from engine compartment, vehicle significantly lost power.driver could not shut off engine....starter was trying to crank engine-even when ignition was in shut off position.engine suddenly did not have full power.smoke and burning smell continued to increase from engine compartment with no way to shut off engine. Gm relay #12193614 was replaced, as well as burnt out starter. Relay is availableto nhtsa.gm was not interested accessing part when offered to them.

Dt*: the contact stated while the vehicle was parked, the engine compartment caught on fire and burned the vehicle and the garage doors. The fire department and police responded to the emergency call. The fire department determined the fuse box caused the fire. The reports were prepared by both the fire department and police department. Pictures were taken at the scene. The manufacturer was notified. Updated 9/27/2006 -

Takata recall - have been stranded numerous times as it has appeared to be the fuel pump not getting gas to start the car. Sometime can hear pump running as i have replace 3-4 pumps since 2012 or 13. Some time beating under tank helps. There seem to be numerous complaints about this problem. Security light flashing and start sometime when it is reset. Sounds wonderful when it runs. Can it be the computer? towed to a safe location after not starting and diagnostic technician show 10% fuel pressure. I parked went in to make a payment at a business and would not start for 4 days

Front manifold bolt has broken on driver side causing a leak, research has shown that this is a big problem with gm pickups made during these years. It is a very costly repair and there are literally thousands of other gm owners with the same problem. There should be a recall on this defective part. It is a dangerous problem, leaking carbon monoxide thru the and into the driver and passenger area. There should be a recall by gm to fix this problem.

I have an exhaust leak, due to a broken exhaust manifold bolt.gm used the wrong bolts on my 5.3liter engine.my chevy dealer says it's going to cost me $1200 to $1400 to repair my engine.my truck only has 87000 miles on it.

I have a broken exhaust manifold bolt which is all too common on all v-8 gm engines on the silverado sierra series trucks. There are often multiple broken bolts most commonly the front or rear bolts. This should be under recall because it creates exhaust leaks and catalytic converter failure which adds a safety issue and financial burden because it is a very expensive and labor intensive repair. Complaints are all over the internet and youtube. As an ase master auto and truck tech i've repaired dozens and seen dozens more being in a government fleet operation. Gm should carry the financial burden to repair these vehicles not put the burden on the consumer. Please get the word out and lets get gm to pay up.

The contact took the vehicle to a independent mechanic where they repaired the head gasket of the vehicle. The manufacture was made aware of the failure but unwilling to repair the vehicle. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000. The vehicle was not repaired.

Gm bulletin # 06-06-01-019b indicates a faulty castech head. No recalls, cost to repair is over $1,000.00 this is a known faulty part that gm will not honor replacement.

1. Found needle bearings in oil during routine oil change. 2. Was told rocker arms were failing, vehicle had about 75,000 miles on it.3. Replaced all rocker arms, cleaned out heads, removed engine oil pan cleaned and removed all material.

Dt*: the contact stated an oil puddle was noticed under the vehicle while parked in the driveway on 3 occasions.the dealer was contacted and replaced the oil pan gasket.the 2nd time an oil puddle was found, the vehicle was taken to the dealer who found an oil leak in the crankcase sensor.the dealer replaced the oil pan gasket & installed oil pressure unit on 09/23/04.on 09/05/06, the vehicle was taken in for a recall, and the dealer determined that the oil pan gasket needed to be replaced a third time.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500.the contact experienced several issues with his vehicle and took it to an independent mechanic for repair.when he took the receipt for the repair to the dealer, they refused to speak with him.the dealer claimed to have called the manufacturer and was informed that they were not responsible for the repair charges because the vehicle was serviced by an independent mechanic.the rear end seal, transmission collar, intake gasket, theupdated 04-20-09head gasket on the engine, and the catalytic converter were all replaced.the failure mileage was 98,000.

The part of the frame that holds up the gas tank and connects to the shock has rotted away. I had to replace both rear leaf spring shackles do to rust as well as the left rear brake line. The rear of the truck is rusting away. I have had to replace the fuel pump, there is a knock in the steering column that i have had fixed once already, the engine has ticking sound when idling, and the a/c compressor is broken.

The vehicle restarted after waiting 10-15 minutes. The vehicle resumed normal operation. There was a separate occasion the vehicle experienced the identical failure. The vehicle has not been inspected for the malfunction at this time. The failure mileage was 131,500. Updated 04/20/2010. *ljupdated 09/21/10

Exhaust manifold bolts breaking off leaving studs in the heads (4)my late 2002 chevy z71 developed an exhaust leak and the catalytic converter started banging at idle or after parked. Engine has black exhaust on the headwhere we found the main leak. So, carbon monoxide has been coming into the caband the engine compartment seems hotter than normal. When checking into the issue, i found every truck in our company fleet has this same issue and our associates that have personal trucks driving to work checked theirs and they also have the same issue. From 1999 thru 2008 years. When contacting our local chevy dealer, they advised they had never seen or heard of any issues like this.i find that hard to believe. Every person i mention this to, checks their truck and has the same issues with the broken bolts. There is definitely a problem with the exhaust manifold contracting and expanding too much- cheap steel attached to aluminum heads appear on all of the v-8 truck engines. Please look into this as a safety issue with heat and carbon monoxide as well as the costs to repair.

The consumers vehicle began to slope and the (service engine soon light) had come on.immediately after exiting the highway, it stopped.the mechanics installed a new fuel filter.the problem was not fixed because the problem had repeated.the consumer is requesting reimbursement due to a warranty issue with the vehicle.*scc

Recently took car for balancing and rotation at ntb.they saw oil dip was dry and was low oil level.took it back to shop who did oil change one month ago.they said oil is vaporizing. I didn't understand how.tech showed me black sluggish inside tail pipe saying that could be bad catalytic converter and it could have caused because of oil burning inside exhaust.i researched online about this issue and did find out that all gm & chevy owner having this issue with v8 engine on any liter.shop replaced knock sensor twice but still service engine light came back on.it is very expensive repair cost to replace broken bolts on manifold.i hope manufacture will fix this issue as soon as possible so that consumer don't have to go through not passing state inspection.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado z71. The contact was driving 15 mph when the engine back fired and stalled. The contact stated that an abnormal knocking was heard during the failure. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where the mechanic confirmed there was carbon build-up around the pistons and advised that the engine needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted but the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 60,000 and the current mileage was 70,000.

This vehicle had a defective distributor cap.while attempting to start it the engine jerked several times causing the engine block to crack where the starter is mounted.the dealer firstreplaced the original cap with another defective cap.when they replaced it the second time, i was informed that the block was cracked and they could not fix it.

Dt:there was a problem with the engine dying.one occurrence was on 2-15-05.the issue was covered in recall number 05500.the consumer had taken the vehicle in to be repaired on 5-05.on 8-29-05 the problem occurred again.the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer and they repaired the vehicle again.

The engine shut down suddenly while the consumer was driving at 85 mph, the dealer stated the vehicle was designed this way to keep the engine from blowing up.

Normal drivinga t63000 miles and check engine light code p0340for (camshaft sensor circuit malfunctioned. An inddependentrepair shop located a problem with the distributor driver gear having exsessive wear.gear kit was purchase from dealer and installed. Repair shop indicated the gear kit had an additional spacer which was not on the distributor orginially, this sounds like a design flaw. Code was cleared and has not returned. I have the old gear.

I was driving 60mph when construction cones brought traffic to one lane.as i began to apply my brakes, i could feel my foot going to the floor and i was not slowing at all.i tried the emergncy brake, and also no braking occured.i managed to drive onto the medium, and luckily was able to avoid all the "construction junk" that littered that area.after a very long time, i was able to safely maneuver to a safe stop.when i spoke with the mechanic, he told me there were no brake lines.

Have owned my 2002 chevy silverado since new. I have never gotten a flat tire with this truck until a couple of weeks ago. I got a flat tire on memorial day on a four lane highway (rt-1). I was in an odd spot to move farther from the traffic lane and i could not get the truck high enough with the factory jack that was provided. I figured it was because of the uneven ground i was on. About a week later i had a blow out with the same tire in a parking garage (nice level flat concrete surface). I have been a mechanic in about 1975. Hold my pa state inspection license and was a ase certified mechanic. The supplied jack with the same factory size tires will not get the vehicle high enough to change the tires. I tried the factory recommended spots and couple of others. How could gm put people in a position like this? somebody could get killed trying to use this equipment.

My brake lines failed, nearly resulting in killing a child that rode his bike onto the road from a driveway and forcing a vehicle headon into my lane of travel.luckly everyone was able to squeeze into appropriate places and was paying attention as i was unable to slowdown.dust covers on the rear have been rusted and gone for the last two years, and i have replaced the regulators in both passenger/driverside doors three time each due to the cables rusting and snapping.when i took my vehicle into chevrolet dealer ship for maintenance, it had less than 36k at the time, they removed one plastic panel (falling down from behind the door interior trim panels) from each door that was hanging down and scratching my rocker panel, and said "we dont know what these are for, so we just removed them", hmmm, maybe it was to help with moiture related issues within the door panel.not sure just guessing, but cant bellive that they couldn't figure it out. Over all not impressed with chevrolet even though it is pretty much all i have owned, if they keep producing this crap they should lower the price.

While driving on two lane country highway at 55mph low beam head lights went off.after a few scary seconds i was able to find a safe place to stop.i tried several things and discovered that the high beams still worked. I proceeded to my destination defective multi function switch. Internet tells me i am one of many.

I had replaced antilock brake module last year and had brakes worked on this yearand last and replaced brake pads. The rotors had been turned before, on a trip to my daughters my brakes started to go out. They were completely out by the time i reached her corner. I had to have all new brake lines and rotors and pads even though there were only 6,000 miles on the pads. I also had rustproofed thetruck including the underbody and carriage when i bought it new in 2002.it's a rust bucket despite the extra protection. The antilock brake module was rusted. The brake lines were completely rusted through. And now the fuel pump is out and they fuel lines are rusted as well. What gets me is i paid so much extra for extra rust proofing. It should not have rusted through this bad at only 125000 miles. The antilock brake module is placed where the rust can get at it right under the chassis part unprotected. So much for safety. That went out at about 75000 miles but just got it replaced at 100000 miles or so. The brake lines and the fuel lines are a joke on this vehicle. I used to make and inspect and test them at a factory and these would have never passed inspection for corrosion test. But they weren't made there. The factory is closed. No union wages either, but we did good work not this garbage. It cost over $500 for module and it cost 2500 for the rest of brake job. And now the fuel lines and pump and filter will cost over $1000. Plus my truck body is rusting through on the rocker panels. I bought a silverado because they hold their value and are dependable. Now my vehicle is only worth about half of what it should be and i'm paying though the nose on top of it!we have a 98 chevy blazer with 195000 and no rust on the rocker panels and the brake lines are just now getting replaced. There was no extra rust protection on it either! when is gm going to be responsible?

Brake lines and fuel lines must be replaced due to excessive rusting.blew a brake line and had no brakes at all.additionally, the frame has rusted through and had to be welded.looking at repair costs between $1500 - $3000 depending upon how this goes.

Lost most of my braking as a result of heavy rust on brake lines and other brake parts. Mechanic said this was way more rust than there should of been in these areas.

Automatic transmission failed at 58000 miles. This truck was never used for towing. The reverse went out backing outthe garage. Also, thevent and vapor sensor for the fuel tank failed. I was told there have been many updates for the transmission.

Stateinspection my truck failed due to gasoline rusted and leaking gas, rear shackles rusted thru, parking break won't hold corrosion. I have never had so many rusted out parts on my truck before, the gas line should not rust thru this is a safety issue. Shackles rusted thru what gives my old 88 never had any of these problem please do a recall.

2002 chevrolet silverado 1500, 4 wheel drive z71 off road, 58420 miles, was stopped with foot depressed on brake pedal, felt pedal go all the way to the floor.had to accelerate and had no brakes. Brake fluid leak due to rusted brake line. After further inspection all brake lines, fuel lines, ehcu brake line connection are all rusted. Brake line is in the process of being replaced but at a stand still at the moment due to a leak at the ehcu connection due to pitting, there isn't a tight connection. Still in the process of repairs. Have all parts.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500.while driving 15 mph, the vehicle began to vibrate and shake.the vehicle would also not shift into reverse, second, and fourth gears.the dealer stated that the transmission reaction shell caused the failure and was replaced at the cost of $1,728.the current and failure mileages were 57,000. Updated 01/11/08.*ljthe fuel pump and u-joints were replaced. Updated

-the contact said that the cap and rotor that goes to the spark plug had been replaced, because of arecall. The contact said that the parts went bad a year later.he took the truck back to the dealer (pearson buick gmc) and they replace the parts again, but they charged him $100 for his warranty use.the contact said that since the parts are still under recall why did they charge him for this warranty use? the contact has repair orders for all the work.

Luckily i was pulling in my driveway when i found out my brakes had gone because they had rusted through not long after my gas was pouring out cause the fuel lines rusted and now chances are i wont get an inspection sticker this coming year because my frame is rusted out

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that fuel was leaking under the vehicle. In addition, the check engine warning indicator illuminated as soon as the vehicle was operated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump was leaking and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 116,000. Ma 10/19/2015

I've had to replace calipers, rotors, brake lines the have rusted, brakes hoses that have gone bad and this vehicle is well kept and inside. Low miles for a 2002 and yet all at once everything went bad including my fuel sensor for the gas guage.

Fuel and break lines completely rusted out.fuel line broke while replacing fuel filter. Necessitated replacement of entire fuel line system.break line broke while driving around same time losing all breaking functions.needed to turn off road and kill motor to stop. All break lines need replacement.i spent $2500 fixing.

Excessive corrosion on brake and fuel lines. Had a metal line blow out near rear driver side wheel causing driver to have to use transmission and holding parking brake release handle while using e-brake while steering with one hand. Upon splicing in a section of replacement tubing, i noticed the fuel return line from the engine to the tank is corroded severely too. I had a section of fuel line fall apart upon replacing a fuel filter and spliced in a rubber fuel hose with clamps to get a fuel filter replaced. When the fuel lines rupture, there is a chance of fire from the exhaust or hot brake drums.was advised by mechanic that i need to sell truck as it has 18-24 months left without proper and expensive repairs being made. Rarely gets underbody wash as a quality wash is far away and was advised that the rust is probably holding it together and advised not to knock off any more rust as it would accelerate further corrosion. Was advised a waste of time to use rust reformer or undercoating.i noticed this stationary as the vevicle was making squeaking sounds from the rear axle hub on driver side (same line that blew) and figured hanging caliper so i did a full brake pedal press and felt the pedal get spongy and drop another 1" toward floor. I opened door, hung out looking under truck and pressed pedal again to see fluid pouring from rear axle area. Drove it 30 miles with no service brakes to get to the garage using only e-brake and 3,2,1 and neutral range of transmission to be able to stop if needed. Also was advised about fuel tank strap and that i would need a flame cutter to change the fuel pump as truck bed bolts looked horrible or would need to cut tank straps depending on how much fuel is in the tank. The "annual underbody wash" most owners manuals recommend is insufficient to prevent this problem.

Brake lines and fuel lines are very rusted also the drive shaft and abs bracket2 brake lines have rusted through while driving the truck has only about 100,000 miles it is very dangerous

The fuel lines rust away and start leaking fuel badly. All lines have to be replaced. The rust on this truck is unbelievable. Gm will not stand behind the product. The rocker panels all rusted out as well. The frame is rusting out. These truck are just rust buckets

Began to smell gas and could visual see fuel leaking from in the area of the fuel tank.mechanic confirmed fuel were leaking due to corrosion.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving 55 mph, the contact smelled fuel inside the vehicle. The contact discovered fuel leaking underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence and a certified mechanic stated that the fuel line was rusted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 138,000.

No previous issues leading up to hood latch failure - routine use of hood latch mechanism.hood latch failed during travel at highway speeds.very fortunate to exit highway after seeing hood rising.the four weld seams holding latch body to truck frame failed.weld seams remained on truck framework while hood latch body showed material failure.points of hood latch connection after failure -> latch hook connected under hood;the hood latch cable connected.failed hood latch remains available.

The parking brake on my truck will not hold as it should, thus causing vehicle to roll down driveway. There is a recall for silverado's with manual transmissions,( defect investigation # ea04011 gm recall #05042 nhtsa campaign id# 05v161000) mine is a automatic, but the auto and manual use the same parking brake set-up. I have done some reading on-line chevrolet truck forums and there are allot of silverado/suv gm owners with automatics that have this same type of brake system that are having the same issue, not holding due to premature wear out of parking brake shoe lining.there is also a gm tech serv bull for this matter as well, but not a recall for the vehicles with auto transmissions, what are the owners of automatics less important.the tsb has the dealers replace the spring retainer clip just as the recall does. I think the tsb needs to take a hard look at the parking brake issues on the trucks/suvs with automatic transmissions as well.

I don't understand why you have a recall on the parking brake for a manual trans only when it is just as important to have one on a automatic trans. If you park your truck on a steep incline and can't use the parking brake along with the transmission, then it is virtually impossible to get it out of park and you can't tell me that doesn't do damage to the transmission....it takes the same part to fix the parking brake in a automatic trans as it does in a manual trans.. Very disappointed!!!!!

Dt*: the contact stated while parked on an incline under normal road conditions, the emergency mechanical brake gradually failed to hold the vehicle.the braking system was rear wheel anti lock.the vehicle was not examined or repaired.

02 silverado, park brake shoe is not held in place securely and moves around in the hub at any bump in the road, especially at low speeds. Because thebrake levers are inverted, the driver side brake will lock up when hitting a pot hole in my drive way daily. This is not the rear end freezing upor transmission malfunction. One tire locks up and the other spins excessively. For proof, just take the hub off and look at how the shoe is not held in place. Acorrectivepart needs to be added , hopefully nobody has been injured because of this. This was mentioned to the chevy dealer by myself in 2003 and if i would have known how to contact youback then, i would have asap.

- the contact stated that the 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500, received recall 05v161000 for the parking brakes.he took the vehicle to the dealership for the recall repairs on 12/2006. Six days after the repairs the weather became cold about 30 degrees, and the emergency brake became stuck.he did get the emergency brake to release and drove the vehicle 3 miles when began smelling something that smelled like the brakes burning.he got out of the vehicle and noticed that the passenger's side rear wheel was extremely hot.he let the vehicle cool down ,and tried to jar the emergency brake. Then he called the dealership, and they reminded him that in extremely cold weather he shouldn't use the emergency brake.the brakes were repaired.the dealership didn't charge him for the repair, they informed him the recall repair had not been done properly, and that the emergency brake was adjusted too tight.the contact stated that after this repair he drove the vehicle for about a week, and the emergency brake froze up again.he filed a complaint with the manufacturer, and wa given a case#71-461637111.the contact stated that he had to sell the vehicle becausecouldn't take the chance with the emergency brake on the road, and so he traded the vehicle in.the contact had all the information for this vehicle.the failure mileage was 85,000 miles.

Parking does not hold vehicle in place when fully engaged. The parking brake pedal travels to floor with very little resistance.vehicle continues to roll on incline if taken out of gear with parking brake fully engaged. The parking brake has never functioned properly since vehicle was purchased brand new in 2002 from folsom lake chevrolet, folsom, ca.i've discussed this issue with other chevy silverado truck owners with the 4-wheel disc braking abs system and they all have had the identical problem i have had. I am disappointed and alarmed that gm has not done the right thing and taken care of this ever so apparent problem.

Although the truck is rated to tow 9000 lbs the parking brake will not hold my 7000 pound trailer from rolling down the hill forwards or backwards. My 3000 lb boat rolls backwards into the water at a boat launch. The pbrake pedal goes to the floor with little resistance. Two different chevy dealers have seen the truck. The first dealer adjusted the brake and it was better, the second said that there was nothing more that they could do. It still rolls with a trailer on it. The dealers said that the low resistance pbrake is a design feature.

Parking brake pedal went to the floor and did not hold.

Corroded brake lines caused the failure of both front and rear brakes at the same time.inoperable rear emergency brakes provided no emergency stopping ability.replaced brake lines.emergency brake not repaired.i understand that trucks with manual transmissions were recalled for emergency brake defect correction, but trucks with automatic transmissions were not eventhough they have the same emergency brake system.my vehicle has an automatic transmission.not certain when emergency brakes became inoperable, but my guess is around 2004 or 2005, with 60k to70k miles.brake line rupture was in 2009 at 156k miles.

I own two 2002 gm products, a tahoe and a silverado pickup. The emergency brakes do not work on either vehicle. I have had to take both to the dealer for repair to get them to pass state inspection. I have contacted five of my friends that own 2002 gm products and three out of the five have the same problem. That is a safety concern and someone needs to investigate this in greater detail.

Dt*:the contact stated while applying pressure to the parking brake the pedal does not feel firm.the brakes chirp constantly.there is a nhtsa recall, # 05v161000, regarding the parking brake.the vin was not included in the recall.

- the contact found a recall for the manual trasmission version of his truck but he is having the same parking break issues with his truck which is an automatic.the dearler has stated that there is no recall on this vehicle.the mechaniic states that it was a bad design.

There is a recall for the parking brake on 2002 chevy silverado pickups with manual transmissions starting apr 20, 2005.however, i do not know of a single 2002 silverado pickup or 2001 suburban where the parking brake holds.i have been told that if you don't use the parking brake it gets out of adjustment (rumor).i don't use mine with my automatic transmission.mine has never held since i purchased the vehicle.tuesday, may 23, 2006, i took my pickup to the dealership to have it inspected for a new inspection sticker.it failed because of the parking brake.yet, this same dealership has inspected my pickup for every other inspection sticker and this is the first time they failed it even though it has never held.

The parking brake has failed on my 2002 chevrolet silverado, as has been described in the gm recall number 05042. The friction linings have worn and cut into the drum, making the parking brake ineffective. A gm representative told me my vehicle was not recalled, and the only vehicles recalled were vehicles that have a manual transmission. Mine has an automatic transmission. I believe my vehicle should be included in the recall, due to the fact that i have to park on steep boat ramps while launching my boat, and have to depend on the parking brake to help hold the vehicle from rolling into the water.

Emergency brake stopped working on my 2002 chevrolet tahoe after 34,757 miles.a properly working emergency brake is critical, as my three small children ride in and play around this vehicle.

I am writing regarding the very poor brake life and performance failure on my 2002 chevrolet pickup, 1500 series purchased new from a local dealer. At 19,500 miles the brakes were diagnosed (on 1-15-09) by the dealer as needing complete overhaul, a cost of $571.00. The problem was noticeable at12,000 miles by excessive pedal travel, the same with the emergency brake. No action was taken or notice of brake wear indicated by the dealer when notified. By 17,000 miles the brakes were noisy and when informed the dealer said my rear rotors were rusty from low use and i should consider a replacement. Unable to believe my brakes were worn out ( i'm 65 years old and have never had a vehicles' brakes wear out any where near this mileage) i decided to drive it more often to remove the rust. During this time my teenage daughter, with me as a passenger, nearly hit a semi unexpectedly blocking our lane, because the brakes worked very poorly. This was in the fall of 08. In november and december 08, i wrote to the dealer requesting cost sharing for brake repair. No response.. Then, in late december i wrote to gm , customer affairs, in detroit,mi. Requesting cost sharing due to premature wearout. They requested the cost estimate on 1-15-09 and then refused or denied any assistance based on "low use". I am well aware of a broad problem with early brake wear on 2001 to 2004 (admitted by service reps at the dealer) light duty gm trucks, mostly due to rusty rotors, especially on the rears. This is further evidenced by the dealer estimate which showed expensive replacement"ceramic" pads, which were not original equipment. The dealer also admitted that at one time they tried to add a "kit" to shield the rear rotors from salt spray. These are all evidence of defective parts, something that should be covered by warranty regardless of the vehicles age or frequency of use. Or covered by a recall. Your website shows thousands of complaints on this item. Please add mine.

-the contacthadthe parking brakeassembly replaced onvehiclewith 117000 miles.then, found out that there was a recall on the same model and year for the parking brake , but the dealer would not honor the recall because vin was not included. The contact has the repair order for the work done, as well as the parts.also, the dealer told the contact that the parking brakewas damaging the rotors.

Chevrolet silverado abs failure , loss of brakes when traveling over small bumps or wet roads. Also loss of parking brake. Dealer said it was only on manual transmission trucks that had the failure...this is not true. All trucks.

Severe brake fluid leak on main steel line(s) under drivers side about 1/2 way toward the rear wheels.unable to drive vehicle.pedal went to floor as i was trying to put the vehicle in gear.pumped brakeswith no increase in pedal.looked under vehicle and brake fluid on cement.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet c1500 2wd. The contact was coasting and attempted to brake but the pedal abnormally traveled to the floorboard as the brakes failed. The contact placed the vehicle in neutral and applied the parking brake to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was inspected and it was determined all four brake lines wee severely rusted and corroded.. The manufacturer was made aware of the incident. The approximate failure mileage was 88,000...updated 12-23-13

Where clutch master cylinder mounts in clutch pedal assy broke. Was unable to get out of gear causing me to hit a pole. Damaging bumper hood fender headlight turn signal and grill. Called the dealer they told me that clutch braking issues while driving is not a safety issue. I have done some checking and there are a lot of people with this issue but because gm says not a safety issue they just want to sell us parts to fix this problem.

Chevy extended cab, 1500 silverado:while driving 45 mph, truck lost complete power, i.e. Engine quit, pwr steering loss, no radio, gauges loss pwr.complete loss of power in traffic.truck restarted, sputtered, power loss, engine back on line (intermittently for approximately 1/4 mile).vehicle resumed normal operation for several days.garage found not discrepancies with vehicle.five days elapsed.vehicle loss (died) on highway again. Same described symptoms.is there a recall or other similar issues out there?

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving approximately 60 mph, the transmission failed to respond properly in the overdrive position. In addition, the transmission temperature warning indicator illuminated. The failure recurred whenever the vehicle was in operation. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic on three separate occasions where a repair was performed each time. The contact was uncertain of the specific parts that were replaced. The failure recurred and an independent mechanic was diagnosing the vehicle. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage and vin were unavailable.

I went to stop at street light and the brake went to the floor no brakes at all. Later found brakes lines rusted threw. All transmission lines also rust threw. Price to have fixed over $2000.00

Crested a small hill to see a red light with three cars in line. I depressed brake pedal, which went to the floor.the vehicle was stopped using the parking brake after swerving into empty lane of oncoming traffic in order to avoid hitting the line of cars from behind.upon inspection, the front brake circuit was blown in the piping just aft of the front driver's side wheel.it is extremely difficult to stop a large truck with empty bed using only the rear brakes as they lock up easily.there seemed to be no brake power using the brake pedal, which is why the parking pedal was used.even with a functional parking brake, the "failsafe" of having only one circuit is nearly useless given an empty truck bed (low rear-wheel traction) and a loss of pressure on the front circuit.in my opinion, losing the front brakes on a truck is catastrophic.in any event, in my case, the supposed fail-safe either did not work or was inconsequential.all of the hard lines (fuel and brake) on this vehicle are extremely corroded and are being replaced with stainless.this car spent the first five years of its life in oklahoma and missouri (where little to no salt is used) and moved to nh in 2006.the rear driver's side rocker panel is also rusted through and the frame has very significant rust, especially on the leaf spring hangers.in addition, the front driveshaft is rusted to the point that i will not operate the vehicle in 4wd until i replace it.this vehicle seems very susceptible to rust, especially the brake lines, some of which crumbled in my husbands hands while removing.

I first of all about a year ago and noticed 2nd gear has gone out in it since i very rarely went in the reverse it didn't notice that tell her i was in a predicament and had to push it out and now it's stuck in first gear

2002 chevy silverado c1500 plasticclutchpedalandplastic slate cylinder has broken apart twice. Once around 80,000 miles and 128,000 endanger my life once on the freeway and on heavystreet traffic .i feel that the problem i am having is danger to my health. I know these part should not have been installedor approved. Since this is the most important parts witha manual transmission, i feel these plastic do not belong in the powertrain systemplease help me withthis problems i have two plastic clutch old parts for proof. Thank you

When we bought truck i checked vin and only the tailgate recall came up but listed my truck being a chevy 800 model, well couple weeks ago our truck wouldn't brake while parking making a left into a restaurant and the truck wouldn't stop and hit the restaurant window!!! when i checked just our exact vehicle 15 plus recalls came up with this particular defect listed, please help advise. Thank the parkerd

I purchased a 2002 z71 chevrolet crewcab 4 w/d pickup truck from hendrick chevrolet in september of 2004, and have had my transmission (1st, 3rd and reverse) go out twice in less than a year.i contacted gm, but there was no recall at that time, but there were a lot of complaints on the nhtsa site about this same problem on my model truck.the first time it went out of may of 2005, it happened again february of this year.i had to pay $1,400 tohave it fixed in may 2005, but the place of business who fixed it, fixed it again at no cost, as he said he guarantees his work for a year, and since it had not been a full year, he didn't charge me...you might say i was unlucky and lucky at the same time.i believe there is a serious problem with that particular model pickup.

Updated

Heard several things coming from under the car while the automatic transmission was shifting, then a constant whinning sound with no power.had to have the truck towed.dealer looked at it and determined it was a transmission failure and the sun gear assembly had to be replaced.costs were around $1600.the truck only has 66,000 miles and is not quite five years old (2002 chevrolet silverado 1500).

Sun shell gears inautomatic transmission (4l60e) stripped. Loss of reverse, second and fourth gears in automatic transmission.1st time with 17,982 miles on vehicle and the 2nd time with 78,407 miles on vehicle. Dealer repaired first time under warranty. Second time they split the repair bill of $850.00.

1. Normal use of the vehicle.2.transmission failed, leaving me stranded.3. Transmission was rebuilt at my cost. There are many parts just like mine at the aamco transmission shop in lake charles, la.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500.the contact attempted to place the vehicle into reverse, but it would not move.the transmission failed and was rebuilt; however, it failed again within 2.5 years.the failure mileage was 119,000 and current mileage was 159,000.

While driving transmission made anoise, slipped, andthenlocked. When this occurred vehicle stopped accelerating. Vehicle was towed to a dealership, who replaced the sun seal and pins thatsheared off. The failure recurred 3 times in which the same parts were replaced. The cause of the failures was undetermined.

Transmission of 2002 chevrolet tahoe failed for the second time.79,000 miles. Had been driving on freeway to destination.10 yards from destination i put the car in reverse, but reverse did not work.car in drive suddenly had same whine as when oem transmission broke.needed 2nd new transmission.

Transmission failure on 02' chevrolet silverado at only 23k miles.dealer recommends replacement.many reports of failures on gm vehicles..please help us.

Automatic transmission failed at 58000 miles. This truck was never used for towing. The reverse went out backing outthe garage. Also, thevent and vapor sensor for the fuel tank failed. I was told there have been many updates for the transmission.

When shifting from first to second gear, and second to third gear, transmission shifts hard.loud noise from the transmission/ rearend.occurred after freeway driving repeatedly.

Driving on a city street at 35 mph, transmission failed (sun shell gear in a4l60egm transmission). Lost all drive and was bumped from rear, dented bumper only.towed to a repair shop. Complete transmission replaced.

I was driving my 2002 chevy 4x4 pickup (46,000 miles) home when a loud clank noise occurred and then a high pitched grinding noise followed.my truck would not shift normally (2nd, 4th, and reverse were out).i was lucky to make it home as i drive on a highway through the national forest where cell phone coverage is very limited.i took my pickup into the dealership and they indicated the problem was with my sun shell in the transmission.it had apparently failed and would cost between $1300 and $2500 to get everything fixed depending on how extensive the damage.i bought the pickup new and its never been off-road, towed or hauled anything and only has 46,000 miles.

(1) no events noted leading up to the failure.normal driving conditions were implemented.proper maintenance and intervals were observed.warranty had recently expired.mileage at time of failure was ~49,000 miles.(2) transmission failure occurred leaving family stranded in middle of traffic.after troubleshooting efforts from 2 garages, it was determined the sun reaction gear failed.this failure has no forewarning and is due to inferior quality of materials/parts used in the transmission.this event left my family stuck in traffic until, through trial and error, it was found that 1 gear was left semi-functional.the lack of reverse gear also put my family in danger while attempting to reach a safe area, out of traffic.gm is aware of the issue as noted in numerous factory technical bulletins and conversations had between manufacturer customer service and myself but are unwilling to make any strides for correcting the issue or compensate for damages.(3) at my expense, the repair options were total replacement of total rebuild of the transmission.we opted to total rebuild for 2 reasons; first - the replacement was only available from gm and it could not be verified if the same issue would exist in the replacement; second - proper rebuild expense was for cost efficient. The original defective part is available.

Transmission failed while driving. Lost reverse 2nd and 4th. Common problem with poor quality transmission components used by gm. Scum. Anyways, economy is in a recession and i have lots of bills to pay and now this one as well. Thanks. I laugh everytime gm's stock gets lower. They truly deserve it.

Seatbelts does not catch and will not recoil. Started out as loose now it will not retract. Started when i applied the brakes when a dog ran in front of me and seatbelts did not catch and my chest hit the steering wheel. The seatbelts did not retract after it pull out. I was traveling 55 mph when the dog crossed the highway.

Seat belt locks up allowing you not to be able to put it on or pull it out far enough to put on.

Driving on roadway and hit a concrete mail box air bags didn't deploy had surgery on my left arm broken left leg fibula had a bowel blockage hit a illegal construction mail box made of concrete blocks and rebar airbags didn't deploy

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving various speeds, the front driver side seat metal frame detached. The contact coasted to the side of the road and then continued driving. The vehicle was taken to a post repair shop and the seat frame was welded. The seat was repaired. In addition, the contact was concerned for his safety because the seat belt was attached to the frame. The contact called pine belt chevrolet dealer and the manufacturer who stated that there was no replacement part. The approximate failure mileage was 218,000.

Defective hinge on center jump seat (arm rest) console lid.no abuse, accident or collision caused.it is a safety hazard to anyone using arm rest or reaching behind seat as the part of the hinge that broke now sticks straight up.is a chevrolet silverado 1500 2002 model.

Drivers seatback has broken twice in less than a year.

Brake lines started leaking brake fluid out of nowhere. Because of this, the brake petal suddenly stopped working and could have resulted in death. I was driving at about 30 mph on a city street when i discovered this issue. Had i have been driving at a higher speed i may not be here to complain. Rusted brake lines is the problem with this issue.

Brakes pulsating at low speed trying to stop almost hit another car in front of me.

Rusted brake lines caused a near accident when the line broke, resulting in loss of braking abilities.

Brake lines under hood at drivers side rusted hole in line caused brake failure.

I was driving at low speed on a street that is 25mh as i break to stop at the stop signmy abs activated. Almost caused me a serious accident because i couldn't stop so i had to break so hard my but was actually off of the seat. And this continues to happen so now i have to take the abs fuse out to deactivate my abs.

While traveling through town approached an intersection when brakes were applied pedal went to the floortried to pump them as fast as possible to not get into a collision with car sitting at the red light. Did an avoidance maneuver into right turn lane was unable to stop truck and narrowly missed oncoming traffic turning left as i approached the corner, i shifted transmission into low gear and was able to apply parking brake to stop truck. Took to mechanic and found brake line ruptured below drivers seat had to replace all brake lines due to corrosion .was informed by mechanicsrepairing the ruptured line could break surrounding lines as they were all corroded as well. So they replaced all brakelines and all piston calipers as well because ferrul nutswere rusted into calipers.$1600 dollar repair. Lines and calipers (4).

Went to stop for a red light. Brake pedal went right to the floor. Had to swerve not to hit the car in front of me and swerve again not to kill the guy walking on the shoulder of the road. This is unacceptable i have driven lots of car into the ground never has this even been a thought. All brake lines needed to be replaced 1100 dollars later!

Was leaving a paintball field parking lot. Was moving at idle speed of 5mph and went to slow down to hear someone yelling something. Pedal went to the floor. I continued to the stop sign and the pedal once again went straight to the floor. I had to drive 23.5 miles to get back home using the old school method of down shifting and applying the little bit of brakes i had left. ****very dangerous****once i got home i checked my brake reservoir and it was half full. Under the truck inspection showed fluid from the drivers door all the back to the rear end. I could not see where the leak originated from. Will have to take to a mechanic and pay.

Brake line ruptured. Mechanic said it had rusted through. This happen in 2009 and again today 2/23/2013.

Started to leave house to go grocery shopping, started vehicle applied brake to out auto into gear, brakes pedal went to the floor, check fluid levelwas o.k. Recheck braking, same result, no brakes. After checking notice signs of brake fluid at areas beneath vehicle at driver door.called for tow truck the following morning. If i had gotten to hywy. Us 1. And this problem happen, i fear there would have been a terrible accident involving myself, or others.waiting for word from auto shop of what the problem could be.this is very serious safety issue with this and other trucks.

Brake lines and fuel lines are very rusted also the drive shaft and abs bracket2 brake lines have rusted through while driving the truck has only about 100,000 miles it is very dangerous

The incident happened while driving home from toledo ohio to home in white lake michigan.my exit was normal when exiting the freeway.i applied brakes to begin slowing down.as i approached the end of the exit ramp the traffic light was red with other vehicles waiting.i applied the brakes harder and heard a popping noise.the brake pedal went to the floor.i tried to pump the brakes to get them to work to no avail.rather than running in to stopped cars i ran my truck off the road.i was lucky that i was able to stop my truck without hitting the vehicles waiting for the light.i went online to review this and found there are numerous complaints. One comment from gm is that the vehicle will stop if a line ruptures. Not true. Also, since when are brake lines a maintenance issue and not a safety issue.my manual doesn't say replace brake lines every 20,00 miles or 5 years.

2002 chevy silverado 4x4 ext cab truck was recalled in 2005 for anti lock brake activation at low speeds the dealer cleaned put on anti corrosive material on sensor (after truck was in a accident i got the notice in the mail 3 days later) now 7/11/2013 its happening again, they will not fix it again only once, cost for new hub and sensor i about $700 per side $1,400 total to fix problem, this is a safety issue gm, chevy should fix not put a band aid on the fix. Also the chevy dealer said to me its a lifetime warranty on parts and labor wow that's great at my expense. Why didn't they put the lifetime warranty when its new, now i have to pay twice some deal.

Driving 45 mph.needed to apply brakes.no brake at all.i was able to down shift and thank god i was goin up a slight grade and no one was infront or close behind.i was able to veer off road and get it slowed in time to turn into the parking lot of the dealer whewre i had purchased my truck 10+ years ago.they said all brakes lines must be replaced.excessive rust on all.i looked at the line to the left rear wheel after they removed it.it fell apart in the mechanics hand.how it had stopped me is unknown.brake lines do not do this.i've worked on vehicles for 40 years.hard brakes lines do not rust like this.the entire brake line is corroded.not just the top say, from salt.the entire line.i was not able to stop the truck with any remaining brake.physics stopped my truck.feet before plowing into a major intersection.i'd love to buy another gm product.not sure i have the faith that gm wants me to.thanks gm.how can you bailout of this mess?recall it.i spent good money on a chevy because a chevy will last as long as your willing to care for it properly.now i'm spending in excess of $800 to fix your "low bidder" vendors mistake.whomever made the brake lines should be bailing me out.make it right gm.just make it right.

2002 chevy silverado truck was sitting in driveway i was ready to leave pushed on the brake to put it in drive and the pedalwent to the floor . Looked under the vehicle fluid everwhere. Not one leak or any sign before. I knew what it was because i know at least 4 other people with chevy trucks and thier lines went, 1 had an accident running in to the rear of a car.i have a new line set but didn't get to in time. If thay hadn'tfailed inmy driveway the outcome would have been intierlydiderent with my son his friend and myself.one would think they would use a material to withstand the elements on brakes!!!!! my work truck truck is a 2001 silverado so i checked it and there gone also. I would be willing to bet that most pepole fix the lines and don't report. To me this is a big problem.

Corrosion and failure of metal brake line directly below left front door. Very poor design as tubes are behind a double loop of chassis wiring causing buildup of dirt and moisture resulting in premature failure. Failed when backing out of the driveway and thank god i was not on the road

The emergency brakes have never worked, the pedal goes to the floor and will not hold the truck. I have a 4 wheel drive with an automatic transmission. When on an incline in park the truck will sometimes start to roll down hill.

I lost the brakes. The peddle went to the floor. It turned out to be a rusted out brake line. I was able to avoid an accident by pulling off the road. After research, i found this is a recurring problem for chevy suburbans.

Chevy rust.brake lines rusted out completely and failed - happen at slow speed no one injured.shackled broke off and hit bottom of bed without towing. Frame is rusted out.neighbor has similar vehicle with same problems (put jack on frame and it went through the frame.)many complaints online about these very issues.

Coming home with a small load of lumber for a woodworking project, the "change oil lite" came on.upon returning home and unloaded the lumber, backed the truck into the garage to change the oil-- the pickup didn't stop. He crawled under the pick up to find fluid on the garage floor andthe brake lines rusted, corroded and one brake line split and leaking.fortunately we were not traveling when the brakes malfunctioned.

With engine on and going at approximately 45 mph, an 'abs system' warning light came off along with a continuous motor type sound. I parked the car on side road and loud 'motor' type noise continued coming underneath the car.i drove the car back home and abs system light on with continuous sound did not stop. Turned engine off and the sound did not stop. After a couple of hours, the sound did not stop and had to disconnect car battery. Took car into car dealership and right away before car was formally tested/diagnosed, the service advisor stated he knew exactly what the issue was. The car was diagnosed and service advisor confirmed the car had a 'known' problem related to abcm (abs control module). According to the service advisor this is a potential safety related problem. This is the reason why i am submitting this safety complaint. According to the service advisor, damaged abcm computer can send an incorrect signal and the breaks can close when the car is running. I contacted chevrolet corporate and explained the situation (service req # 71-1092953268). I was informed there are no recalls for this type of problems.i did a quick search in the internet and found that many consumers are complaining about the same problem. Also noted that the problem does not seem to be related only to 2002 chevy trucks, but other car models and years. If the cardealer service manager is correct and this is a safety related problem, then this issue could cause serious incidents. Can nhtsa please look into this problem and confirm if this is a potential safety problem? thanks in advance for your help.

My wife complained to me the brakes on our 2002 chevy silverado pick-up, felt funny. I backed our pick-up truck out of the driveway and went to the end of the street, the brakes felt mushy. As i got to the end of our street is a stop sign. I was going approximately 15 to 20mph. I went to stop the truck and the brake pedal went right to the floor.i was unable to stop.i pumped the brakes and then held firmly on the pedal.i quickly observed cross traffic in the road before me and i turned sharply onto the shoulder of the highway west just being narrowly missed by west bound traffic. I had my wife follow me to the dealership and i coasted into the dealership without any brakes at all. The following day i was told by the dealership i needed all new brake lines and brake calibers. They asked me to come down and view the under portions of our pick-up and i did so. The truck was up on the hoist and mechanic and service rep showed me he was unable to take the broken line out of the brake caliber without snapping off the nut holding the brake line. They showed me the remaining brake lines all in stages of rusting out including the one line that blew open causing the sudden leak and "no brakes" problem.the repair service cost me approximately $2800,00. I complained to the service manager [xxx], i told him i have driven gm cars for decades on michigan roads and never had any brake line rust out and fail. I was told the brake line failure was due to the salty conditions driving in michigan winters. His explanation still did not make much sense to me. I know car manufactures are very aware of these type road conditions in the midwest and north east. The dealership that i took my truck to is the only repair facility i have taken it to for maintenance and repairs. That was a very expensive repair bill. We were lucky not having an accident on that day.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

While approaching a stop sign i applied the brakes and the pedal went to the floor. No warning of any kind. Lucky for me no traffic was coming.

While exiting freeway, on "off ramp" removed foot from gas pedal to start braking and pedal went to floor. Literally stopped two (2) feet from rear of already stopped car. Upon underneath inspection found leaking brake fluid at rear, severely corroded brake line.

While attempting to stop the 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500, the anti-lock brakes activated at about 5 mph and caused total loss of braking control.unable to stop, the silverado crashed directly into an advertising sign.there was minimal damage to the silverado, moderate damage to the advertising sign, and no injuries to the driver or two children.follow-up after the accident revealed that activation of the anti-lock braking system (abs) is a known issue and part of a gm recall (nhtsa campaign number: 05v379000).

Left rear steelbrake line blew out.upon inspection, brake line was found rusted with a 1/16 inch hole on the 3/16 inch tubing.

Coming to a stop light and lost all brakes. Further inspection revealed that rear brake lines are rusted through. All other lines are severely rusted. Including fuel lines.

While traveling at 25mph and coming to a slight abrupt stop, the brake pedal fell to the floor while depressing the pedal to stop.the vehicle came slowly to a stop with steam rising from under the vehicle.upon pulling the vehicle to a safe location and upon inspection, it appears as if one of the metallic (assuming steel) brake lines feeding from the master cylinder to the abs block had burst.no indication lights on the dash of a braking system failure or low pressure alert for the system. It appears that the brake lines were corroded/rusted.upon discussing with a reputable auto shop, they indicated that this is a common issue on this model year vehicle and that a repair to replace the lines may be required.this is a safety issue in my opinion and if the materials used to make this safety system were non-corrosive; this would have not happened.

Pulling out of a gas station ..break lines ruptured and i drifted out into the road before being able to stop. Car was able to stop with a lot of breaking force.

Took truck in for state inspection, truck failed inspection due to rusted brake lines, power steering pump leaking , dealer said it would be $1228.43 to $1420.99 to just fixed the brake lines all lines needed replacedand calipers screws. Power steering pump cost 535.00 to replace.poor quality ,high cost to fix and lack of safety on gm part for not covering rubber coatingor using stainless steel lines to protect our family very discouraged with service tech said these are the prices. What happened to our safety. Brake lines and gas lines should not be made of steel that can corrode and rust out and break. Power steering pump with these few miles should not have gone out. My 1988 chevy truck never had these problems. There needs to be a recall.

Without any warning and fortunately at low speed the driver's side rear brake line developed a major leak.despite gm's claim that an incident such as this does not result in inadequate braking, it was difficult to stop the truck.further inspection of the brake lines yielded considerable corrosion in other areas.contacting the dealer where i purchased the truck revealed the high cost to repair this issue, despite the fact that it is a major safety issue with the truck.the dealer also made note that i should consider replacing the fuel lines.contacting general motors yielded the response that this is a maintenance issue and that they could do nothing to assist me.i do consider other components in the braking system to be maintenance items, not the brake lines.brake line failure can result in immediate catastrophic results with absolutely no warning.my exhaust system is the same age as my brake lines and is in excellent condition despite the same environmental exposure as my brake lines. General motors needs to address this serious safety issue.

Travelling from pa to cape hatteras, nc. Total brake failure of all 4 wheels in bumper to bumper traffic on us 158 s bypass in kill devil hills. Managed to swerve onto right berm grassy area and shift to low and use hand brake to stop. Had two children in the back seat. One was a 2 year old. Had to drive 42 miles with no brakes to reach destination. Mechanic in rodanthe had to replace all brake lines and master cylinder. Brake lines were totally rusted out. If this would have happened on i-95 at 70 mph we would probably all have been killed.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While attempting to engage the brakes, the brake pedal sank to the floorboard. After inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed that the brake lines fractured due to corrosion and caused the brake fluid to leak. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 156,412. Updated 10/06/16*lj

Had to make a panic stop at a speed of 50 mph....not a full braking panic stopbut a minor panic stop when the brake pedal went to the floor. Drove 3 miles to home (very carefully) ......service garage said i had blown a brake line due to rust, and all lines were completely rusted. Cost to replace all lines, $950.00.

Leaving from work at the greater cincinnati airport. Driving down the ramp to the stop sign at donaldson rd. While attempting to brake for the stop sign the brake pedal went to the floor causing the truck to go through the stop sign across the east bound lanes of donaldson road and finally stop before entering a ditch on the north side of the road.at first, i was going to have the car towed. I found that there was some residual braking left and i, slowly, drove the car approximately 12 miles to my house. The next day i took the car to the local shop and upon inspection was told that one of the brake lines had failed due to corrosion. I was also told that "all" brake lines needed to be replaced due to corrosion. Total bill was over 1200 dollars. 2002 chevrolet silverado extended car/long bed 1500.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The vehicle was taken for state inspection when the contact was informed that all of the brake lines were corroded and would have to be replaced. There was an investigation under nhtsa action number: ea11001 (service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:hoses, lines/piping, and fittings) that could have been related to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 44,000.

Complete brake failure on a busy suburban street. I was intending to stop for a red light and had no brakes. Pedal went to the floor.no collison. Truck needed to be towed to repair shop. Costwas $872.73.

The first time i lost all brakes was when i was backing up to a traler on 7/13/15. The second time i was hauling a dump trailer with rock and lost all brakes and was able to get it to coast to a stop. The first incident was taken to a chevy dealership and had the rear brake line replaced, only to lose my brakes again 40 days later! this time it was my front brake line.why is there no recall on this? i don't feel safe driving this vehicle anymore. I have 3 young children and i can't trust your vehicle with their lives or mine!

During an unexpected stop situation, my brakes stopped working normally. The abs system was going on and off. My pick up would not stop. Fortunately, there was no oncoming traffic and i was able to drive in the oncoming lane avoiding the vehicle in front of me and there was no accident. I took the vehicle to my repair shop and the technician showed me that the brakelines were rusting out and in two spots the lines had ruptured, probably during the event described above. Brake fluid was leaking from the lines in two spots.

I purchased the truck from the dealer, with 230,000 miles on shortly after purchase as i braked to stop the peddle would stiffen and purr... And the vehicle would not stop, running intersections and parking spots. Causing near accidents. Ii learned this was related to brake antilock system. Dealer said they done the recall procedure to clean sensors and avoided any further concerne expressed. I checked with other dealers who had the same denial reaction, the initial dealer had done checks to all chasis and componant checks, i noticed a mild growl when in four wheel drive but drove well otherwise.i inspected the wheel sensors and they were clean i learned the reluctor ring which triggers the sensorsare within the front wheel bearings i had one oil service done by another garage who did a 21 point check but neglected to tell me of the apparent wear.after about fifteen months the left front wheel bearing began to fail while drivingcausing a extreme growl, i then had it checked by a service garage who clearly idenified the evident wear onboth front wheel bearings, i had the bearings both changed along with a lower ball joint along with both front axleshafts, due to mild leaking boots. This them stopped the hard peddle and brake failure when stopping. The dealer knew of the wear and ignored the danger.the dealer should not be allowed to sell a vehicle in this condition . The truck does drive well now. But i still have a very mild growl in the left front, but with the axles new the noise is coming from the drive case, only when in four wheel drive.( while the brake problem existed i adjusted my driving practice and limited my use of vehicle.)

We just purchased a used 2002 chevy silverado on 9/25, took it for a safety inspection and was told that the brake lines had burst and brake fluid was leaking. These repairs are going to be very expensive and i feel that gm should cover the cost of the repairs, since there are hundreds of problems with the brake lines on vehicles of this year/make/model.

Approached corner and pressed brakes to turn. Peddle went to the floor. Almost ran into a car turning and i had to swerve to miss them.

My brake lines on my silverado have been replaced 5 different lines in 4 years the truck has 90,000 miles on it and in the last month 3 times ive lost brakes the guy who fixes my brake lines tells me the lines are rusted out each time this happens, he told me he cant tell by sight when they will fail cause they look ok but that's not the case, i've read this is a issue with these vehicle's ive been lucky so far (knock on wood) but the cost and the stress of having your brakes fail is unacceptable seeing the lines are not up to normal standards, someone should be held responsible for this issue

Truck failed annual maine safety inspection because of major corrosion on all brake lines run along frame underneath. (the lines are not yet leaking, but failure is imminent and vehicle is not safe to drive.) cost of repairs is estimated to be approximately $1400.00 by sullivan tire of scarborough maine.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds and depressing the brake pedal, the abs system engaged intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the front passenger speed sensor erratic needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 115,000.

The abs system activates or does not allow you to stop.it seems like the truck continues to accelerate.pumping the brakes does not work.putting it in neutral or ramming it in park is the only way to stop it.i almost ran someone over today. Thisis a very serious issue.i can not drive this truck in this condition.looking at the forums out there this is a well reported problem yet i have not been made aware of the recall.i have not changed my address and have owned this for more than a year and a half.

While driving downhill at o'hare airport terminal 5 i went to stop for the light and there was a brief second where the brakes acted normally and then the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. I had maybe 10% braking power. I had to drive on the side of the road and through the red light to avoid hitting another vehicle.i brought the car to my mechanic who said the brake line above the gas tank rusted right through.

While driving through my subdivision approximately 20 mph and pressing the brake, the pedal went completely to the floor and the vehicle did not slow down. I pumped the pedal repeatedly and only slight braking action could be achieved. I went through the subdivision just narrowly missing two crossing cars and kids then turned onto a nearby side street. After finally getting the vehicle to stop, i got out and saw a puddle of brake fluid forming a few feet behind the driver side front wheel.

Pulled out of parking lot at low speed and stopped to wait for a red light.while stopped with foot on brake pedal, brake pedal suddenly dropped to the floor.when light turned green i accelerated slowly and tested the brakes to find the stopping power of the vehicle reduced to near zero.pulled over in a safe area after a few blocks and inspected vehicle to find fluid sprayed around front passenger wheel well and dripping from brake line.suspect sudden brake line rupture had occurred.decided vehicle was unsafe to operate and parked it awaiting tow.

I took the vehicle to the shop for a safety inspection. They found that the metal brake lines had rusted through and were leaking. Fortunately this problem was discovered in the shop, avoiding a possibly catastrophic brake failure while driving. I had the front lines replaced by the shop at a cost of $581.50, and i am replacing the rear lines myself. I am filing this complaint to document the problem as it relates to previous requests to gm by the nhtsa to issue a recall on these vehicles for this problem.

Pedal went to the floor, rusted brake line, got to replace 3 of the lines...

Started truck to hook up to a trailer at home. Backing up, and depressed brakes while backing, suddenly lost all brake control.i had no control to stop vehicle.vehicle rolled to a stop while i pressed and pumped brakes with no affect. Rolled to stop. I then placed vehicle in park and exited to find brake fluid on ground. I then tried to slowly move vehicle into garage so as to raise jack up- for a further examination, but i had zero control over braking.in order to get vehicle onto concrete surface/garage i had to shift back and forth between neutral and drive until i limp thetruck into garage but do so without ramming through the back wall as i had no control over brakes.once in, i jacked up truck andi found one leak in one rusted metal brake line at a bend closest to left rear wheel.sudden and total and completeloss of brakes.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact received a recall notification for the brakes on the vehicle. The vehicle was repaired. After the recall repair was performed, the brakes pulsated when applied. The dealer stated that the failure was due to an aftermarket wheel bearing. The contact stated that the brakes worked exceptionally well prior to the repair. The manufacturer was notified of the failure; however the contact was not offered a remedy. The nhtsa campaign number was unknown. The failure mileage was 130,000. Updated 09/10/15*lj updated 11/08/2017

Came out of a restaurant put foot on brake pedal and it went to the floor had truck towed to dealer and was told brake lines need replacing at a cost of 1100.00 dollars. Just glad that i wasn't driving as this was very dangerous.

Drove to milan, mi from ypsilanti, mi.to look in on sister in law who is incapacitated due to broken femur from fall.brakes felt mushy as i slowed to enter her driveway.after entering the driveway at low speed iapplied brakes and pedal went to floor. Tried pumping brakes with no result. Threw shifter into reverse to keep from plowing into sister in laws vehicle. If this had happened earlier on the busy road leading into town i would have surely had an accident.found brake lines badly rusted and both lines leaking that run from master cylinder to antilock module mounted to frame under drivers area. It is ridiculous that these two safety sensitive lines are made of un protected steel as opposed to copper nickel and are run out of the protected under hood area to the high corrosion prone underbody to meet the inappropriately placed antilock module.two years prior to my purchase of this truck gm heavily advertised the rust resistant galvanized panels they were using in their trucks. I have since found out that they quietly removed this rust protection.i have ordered new break lines to totally replace all metal lines on this, my last chevy truck.i can only wonder how many fatalities have resulted from this often referenced condition.the difficulty will be in ever proving the cause and affect (effect) of these accidents since they will be so devastating in nature, the driver will probably be killed and not be able to testify about the true cause and almost all gm trucks of this vintage (especially in the rust belt states) will have break lines so rusted that they will crumble in almost any accident. My experience shows that the unfortunate driver won't always have "some" braking ability left on a line failure.

Hard break lines are fully corroded and need full replacement after a break line failure. Low mileage vehicle, currently 65k, vehicle has been in mild climate of nc and sc since 2002 where snow and salt is infrequent. Never driven in coastal area. Only recently driven across country, where failure occurred. Thankfully at slow speeds.

While driving, the vehicle operator experienced complete brake failure--vehicle was towed to nearest chevrolet dealer and is now awaiting "new " brake line installation. I have been told that the entire braking system has corroded and will need to be replaced.

I was driving home and pulled up to a traffic light and was preparing to stop, as i applied the brake pedal it went to the floor as i was pushing the pedal down and even tried pumping the brakes up a bit nothing workedand it would not stop and i almost hit a police car but luckily the light turned green and i appliedthe emergency brake that stopped me enough to give me time for the cars in the front of me to move on.this is the 2nd time this happened the first time was a similar situationand i got that part fixed and i was informed that other lines were fine but after last winter and the truck being parked outside for the first time it happened again. This truck does not have a lot of miles on it and even though i live in a state that uses salt in the winter this truck was never driven in the winter and parked in a garage and only driven in the summer months which is why the miles are so low and why i purchased it from a private owner.upon further inspection the brake lines are extremely rusted now and leaking and i cannot even afford the cost at this time to get this fixed due to having my hours at work lowered to 5 a day.

Abs kicks in at low speed

Brakes failed due to rusting brake lines.

Brake fluid leak, loss of brakes / failure due to brake line corrosion.

Was driving and brake line "burst" causing brake failure and wreck into tree.

I was traveling at 30 to 35 miles per hour and a school bus stopped to drop kids red lights flashing. I applied brake pressure only to have the brake pedal go all the way to the floor board. Lucky timing i was first in line and ran into grass on the side of the road before any children had disembarked. Investigation revealed that the brake lines had corroded and caused a fluid leak.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving 6 mph, the brakes failed to work without warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 251,000.

Driver swerved in front of two cars in front of me causing them to brake hard. When i brake the brake pedal went to the floor at 70 mph. I swerved in to the emergency lane to avoid hitting the vehicles in front of me. I kept the pedal pressed and engaged the parking brake while down shifting the truck from drive to 3, 2 then 1st. I then placed the truck in neutral and got the vehicle stopped. Upon inspection on the side of the road i found one of the rear steel brake lines had burst.

Thank goodness i just got off a major roadway in town. My 16 year old son was driving the vehicle. We got home and i had to run back out. I was driving at the time. Pulled out of my cul-de-sac and went to apply the brakes at the stop sign and the pedal went to the floor. Lucky no cars or children were in my path. All lines are rusted out. Had two sections (front) with major rot that were leaking. No indicator lights or signs prior to malfunction. Bought new lines from local auto parts store and have been replacing a little at a time. Entire underside of truck looks like its 50 years old!!!! will see what rots out next.

I am the original owner of this 2002 chevy silverado. I was driving about 15 mph and as i started braking the pedal went to the floor. Once the pedal went to the floor the truck started to brake. I was able to slowly make it home as i was only a half mile away. When i got home i inspected the under side of the vehicle and found the main rear brake line had rusted and was spilling brake fluid near the driver rear shock. After inspecting all the steel tube brake lines they all will need replacing as all are rusted very badly.

I had applied the brakes to stop, and the abs was going on and off and i ended up going thru the intersection, luckily no one else was in the intersection, i found out there was a recall on it in 2005 and the work was done on 1/23/2007, i called chevrolet to find out that the recall was done they "cleaned" it and hey look 5 years later it does the same thing and gm wont do anything about it. Looks like cleaning really didn't do the job.

Want 1600 dollars to replace every line on the truck due to rust...including flexible hose to wheels. Don't have vin no truck at shop until i decide what to do.

I was driving and when i went to stop the brake pedal went to the floor and the truck took a long time to stop.the brake failure was caused by rusted brake lines which allowed the brake fluid to leak out. One line was rusted all the way through and several other were badly rusted.

Experiencing unwanted abs activation at low speeds on dry roads when slowing down and/or stopping, with or with out pressing on the breaks.

Steel brake line rusted through at rear of truck near driver side wheel well.all other steel brake and fuel lines in truck heavily rusted and also near blow out point.when rear line failed, brake pedal went to the floor and stopping distance doubled.i was pulling a 3,000lbs boat at the time.the brake warning lamp did not illuminate.brake warning lamp came on only after approx 10 miles of no rear brake availability.i am currently taking preventive measures and replacing all steel lines in truck.old lines available for inspection if you act quickly.

Total brake failure- ruptured brake line under driver door side. Fortunately this happened when i was backing out of my driveway and i was able to stop my truck using the emergency brake.the week before i had my abs sensors on the front wheels replaced because the truck would sometimes not stop at a slow speed. I am happy that this did not happen while i was towing my trailer. Rupture of this line caused a total brake failure with no warning until after the incident( when all the fluid was gone}.

Brake lines rusted through to point of failure

Sometimes when i apply the brakes at low speed 5 -10 mph on dry pavementthe abswill start to cycle making the stopping distance extremely long.

Brake line under driver side frame are completely corroded and one ruptured and my brakes to fail about 90 % could barely come to a stop.

Brake lines are severely corroded. Causing pin hole leaks. Lines are so severely corroded that there is no way to fix except to replace all bake lines. This is a exterme costly repair. Dealer ship quoted a minimum$1700.00 but could be higher.leaks occurr while driving then applyingbrakes due to corrosion cause weak spots in lines. Leaks only occurr while driving then applying brakes that cause increase in pressure in lines. This could be very dangerous in fast moving traffic.

Went to stop for a red light and the drive side rear brake line blew,i went through the intersectionwith no brakes. That was a thrill.

I had complete brake failure with no warning , brake line is rusted. And had to use emergency brake to stop.was a nightmare.

Most recent(9/15/12),brake line ruptures do to tons of rust....body mounts totally rusted off , rear brake rotor dust shields rusted off, leaf spring shackles rusted thru and fell off..rear bumper rusted thru, total under carriage rusted thru, railsunder doors totally rusted thru and have big holes in them..

As i approached a stop sign after traveling about 30 mph and slowing down for the stop sign i press the brakes and it went to the floor and press them a second time and possible a third before crossing traffic and failing to stop. I miss hitting a car by inches.this was all on an uphill incline.i cross traffic and was able to stop in a church parking lot by using the parking brake.after about the fifth time applying the brakes the brake warning light come on.no warning until then.after inspection the brake line next to the drivers side had rupture.the line let a trail of brake fluid for about 200 yards.the brake fluid was checked at oil change service four days prior and was full.now it is empty.this is a major failure that should be corrected before someone is killed.i though that there was a secondary system to stop if one half of the system failed.apparently not!!!!!

I was quite fortunate to have been leaving a parking spot and had just left "park" shifted into drive and applied the brake because a pedestrian stepped out.at that time the pedal hit the floor, i steered the truck in the opposite direction from the person, headed for a part of the lot where there were no cars, applied the parking brake, it did'nt work either, so i put it into park.all this and i hadnt applied the gas to the vehicle.only moments before i parked, i had been traveling on the expressway at 70 mph.when i got out of the truck, all the brake fluid was on the ground.upon closer investigation, we noticed the brake lines were rotted out completely.we feel lucky that no one was injured or killed.very angry atchevrolet.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving, the brake pedal was depressed, but failed to stop the vehicle. As a result, the contact crashed into another vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. The vehicle was taken to an unknown independent mechanic who informed the contact that the abs control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to stewart chevrolet (780 serramonte blvd, colma, ca 94014) where the contact was informed about an unknown manufacturer recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that the vehicle was not being repaired per the recall. The approximate failure mileage was 133,475. Consumer stated he had a numerous close calls with the brakes. Had one accident where they failed to do their jobs. Updated 8/7/18

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While backing out of the driveway, the brakes did not work. The contact had to use the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. The contact shifted to drive to park the vehicle back in the driveway, but the brakes did not work again. The emergency brake had to be utilized. The contact exited the vehicle and noticed brake fluid all over the driveway. The contact looked under the vehicle and noticed the brake lines were severely rusted to the point that it was hard to determine which of the brake lines was leaking fluid. The vehicle was towed to the dealer (kendred chevrolet in smithfield, missouri) where it was diagnosed that all the brake lines failed and needed replacement. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 63,000.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated while driving approximately 35 mph, the brake pedal traveled to the floor when depressed. The vehicle failed to stop until the emergency brake was engaged. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who informed that the front driver's side brake line fractured due to excessive corrosion. The four brake lines were replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 104,685. The vin was unavailable. Updated 08/12/14*lj updated 07/06/2017 *ct

Went to put on brakes and nothing found that they have rusted through and not from rubbing or clamps. Was able to keep from hitting anothercar.

I had traveled approximately 1/2 mile from my house when i applied the brakes to slow down.the pedal had barely any pressure as i applied the brake, fortunately i had a little bit of pressure and i was able to bring the vehicle to a stop, by a combination of downshifting and using what little brakes that i had left. The brake warning light on the panel came on at that time. The vehicle was taken to a local shop to have the problem checked out.i was told that my brake lines were completely rusted out and that they all had to be replaced. I was approximately 1/8 of a mile from my entrance to the highway, and i was fortunate that this happened before i got on the highway.i would have been in congested morning traffic traveling at a speed of 60mph.i had no prior warning. I was told by the repair shop that the lines were rusted so bad that it was senseless to try to fix just one section, and that if they did that i would be returning shortly to repair additional parts of the lines.they told me that this was a very labor intensive repair and that it could cost approximately $1000 dollars.i was also told that this was a common problem with many chevrolets manufactured in the 2000years. This is a very dangerous situation and their should have been a recall on this issue.

This vehicle, at 46,000 miles had to have all the rotors and brake pads and two calipers replaced because they rusted up and locked up.had to do it again about 65,000 miles, then had a back caliper seize up and replaced both rotors and one caliper along with new pads.i then had to have all the rotors replaced, both front hubs, one new caliper and pads again at beck chevrolet a year ago.on my way down to fl this past fall, with about 84,000 on the truck, another caliper seized up and had to replace the caliper, both back rotors and brake pads.yesterday, 3/27/13, on my way home from town, with 85,000 miles on the truck, the pedal went to the floor and no brakes.inspection showed a ruptured brake line on the driver's side.my repairman said every brake line is swiss cheese and need to be replaced.this is ridiculous.i've spent several thousand dollars and have replaced brakes 3 times, all rotors, most calipers and two front hubs because of rust.the frame and everything under my truck is rusted very badly.i've owned this truck since 2004, and bought it when it had 26,000 miles on it.it drives beautiful and is like new, but it's going to rot right out from under me.please help!

I was on my way to the autoparts store for an oil filter for my other vehicle when i came upon a light at a busy intersection.as the light changed to yellow i hit my brakes and the pedal went right to the floor.i was doing no more than 30 at this time.there was no way that i could stop, i drifted through the intersection and was able to drift to safety.i was lucky - another car was also about to turn left in front of me as i was drifting through the intersection, he stopped so an accident was avoided.had the vehicle towed and had to have all brake lines replaced.all were rusted and pitted.paid nearly $900.00 to have stainless steel brake lines installed.these (stainless steel brake lines) should have been installed by gm at the factory.manufacturers all use stainless steel for exhaust, why not for brake lines - seems a bit more important to use stainless brake lines.what is the cost differential between cheap steel and stainless - a few extra dollars spent in manufacturing could save someone's life.

Brake lines were heavily corroded and failed.no warning signs to make this problem identifiable or expected.the truck was immediately unsafe to drive.both the front and rear lines between the master cylinder and abs module failed, causing the truck to have no braking power whatsoever.

Was approaching a red light at approx 30 miles per hour when the brake pedal simply "popped" and went all the way to floor. I was able to muscle it to a stop between the very little braking left, downshifting and the emergency brake.mechanic determined all brake lines rusted and leaking.

I was driving in appomattox vawhen i step on break i had no breaks. Two of lines had bust.

Issue with the abs brakes. Sometimes the abs kicks in and doesn't allow you to stop.

While slowing down coming to a stop - no brakes.checked everything.suspect power booster.this started slowly about three weeks ago.today it actually would not stop and i almost hit the fire hydrant.

Went to start truck. Pressed brake pedal. Truck started, pedal went to floor. Took foot off pedal. Let truck run for a few minutes to see if brake light would go off. It did not. Turned off truck. Checked around truck. Found brake fluid under truck by right rear tire. Check brake line near left rear tire. It is in bad shape and will likely fail soon. Two or three years ago, had front line fail below driver's seat. Replaced front lines. Rear lines did not look too bad at the time. With all new technology advances, chevy is now using inferior material. Dust guards around rear brakes of this truck are completely gone on both sides. Everything is rusting. Had 1975 buick estate wagon for 22 yrs. It was in better shape when i sold it than this truck has been for the last several years. Chevy could do all the corporate double speak they want. Fact is this rust issue is a safety issue. I have friends that have a little older and newer 1500 and all have brake line issues and varying degrees of rust underneath the vehicle. I see where others have registered similar complaints. It is unfortunate that nothing will get done until there are serious injuries. (i see where you want a daytime phone number. If you call from a phone that does not have a nhtsa id, you will have to leave a voicemail.) updated 09/17/15*ljupdated 10/27/2017

Started vehicle early one morning for the first time that day, allowed it to warm up for about one (1) minute and then placed it into reverse to back out of driveway. After traveling about six (6) feet in reverse attempted to stop, pedal went completely to floor with no resistance at all and vehicle stopped after about six (6) feet. There was a complete and total brake failure. No prior indications, no dashboard warning light. After stopping the vehicle i noticed a small puddle of liquid on the ground near the rear of the driver's side door. After having vehicle towed to repair shop i was notified by the repair shop that the brake lines had completed corroded. Total repair shop cost to replace all brake lines was $810.36. This did not include the cost of the tow truck to get the vehicle to the repair facility.i am the first and only owner of this vehicle.

Lost most of my braking as a result of heavy rust on brake lines and other brake parts. Mechanic said this was way more rust than there should of been in these areas.

Brake line are rusting and failing.i was driving in the city and the pedal went to the floor when i applied the brakes. This is the second line to fail from rust and the other 3 look very rusty.

Multiple times stopping about 4-5 mph on dry pavement, my vehicles abs system kicks on and i loose breaking power.

Luckily i was pulling in my driveway when i found out my brakes had gone because they had rusted through not long after my gas was pouring out cause the fuel lines rusted and now chances are i wont get an inspection sticker this coming year because my frame is rusted out

The emergency brake fails to work, it has had the pads replaced 3 times. The emergency brake continues to not work properly.

1st incident - vehicle in motion at low speed, anti-lock brakes activate and prevent vehicle from stopping, ran into garage door2nd incident - after 1st incident, car shop replaced abs module.same situation.vehicle in motion at low speed, anti-lock brakes activate and prevent vehicle from stopping, ran into car in parking lot.

I was driving down local road, when there was a three car accident way ahead. I sowed right down, may 25-30 mph as we came up on it, realizing as i went to slow down more, my brake pedal went to floor.i made it home and parked. My boyfriend looked at it next morning, i had no brake fluid left, one of the lines was so corroded the fluid leaked all over the driveway.i had recently had my brakes done and inspection within the past month. I bought the truck brand new, and have had a lot of issues with it. Including abs that was previously recalled, and never worked after it was replaced, which i did complain about,he interior set material needed replacing, the tail gate cables and hinges are broke, the dealer says there is no recall on them. A sensor went in gas tank, the drivers sidemirror fell off, the window cable on drivers side has been replaced twice, passenger side once, the list goes on and on. Like i said, i bought it brand new off the lot, traded in older chevy silverado, paid cash with gm discount.i love my truck, but think it has had way too many problems. I have definitely read a lot of complaints on the corroded gas lines among other issues and would hope chevy would stand behind their products.

Recall 05v379000 related to low speed activation of the abs braking system while my vehicle is operated was performed in 2006 on my vehicle.this has not fixed the issue as low speed activation of the abs system is occuring now.i have contacted chevrolet corporation (gmc) and asked to have the recall protocol performed again.they refuse.i spoke with kimberely from nhtsa and she advised me to file a complaint if gmc refused to take responsibility for this defect.phone confirmation # 868194

On the evening of december 23, 2013, while travelling on a connecticut state road, i applied my brakes, as a vehicle was turning left ahead of me. The brake peddle went immediately to the floor. I realized a brake line had ruptured. I was about a mile from the automotive repair facility that i utilize. I was able to nurse the vehicle there, where it was subsequently repaired (brake line replaced). In the past, i would have taken the vehicle to the local dealership where it was purchased, but that dealership was one of many closed down by gm. The nearest dealership, in any direction is about 20 miles. Fortunately i have found an outstanding local independent automotive repair facility.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving approximately 50 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and failed to operate. The contact stated that the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard, which caused the vehicle to stop. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The contact was a certified mechanic and was able to diagnose that the brake line was damaged and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The vin was included in nhtsa campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The approximate failure mileage was 168,000.

While driving on us rt 202 the light ahead of me turned red so i attempted to slow down and my brake pedal went straight to the floor and did not stop or slow down. I had lost brake pressure. Ran the red light where i almost t-boned another car, right in front of a police office. After avoiding the crash i parked on the side got out and saw brake fluid pouring out of the drivers side under the drivers door area. The brake lines had failed due to rust. I and other motorists could have been seriously injured for an issue that both gm and the nhtsa know about.

Without warning total brake failure.luckily more road to go down.brake line rusted through.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph, the brakes were applied and the anti lock brake system engaged independently. The contact mentioned that the failure recurred on an intermittent basis. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vehicle was repaired previously under nhtsa campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 91,000 and the current mileage was 93,000.

I was driving my 2002 silverado on a narrow two lane road with a few steep grades and my brakes went to the floor on one of the down grades. I pumped the brakes but nothing happened. Luckily, i had enough time to react and use the emergency brake to get stopped at the bottom of the grade before running through the stop sign at the t intersection and possibly over the embankment directly across from me. Once i got home i realized that all the lines running along the frame to the abs box were corroded as well as the ones going to the front calipers. Once i started researching this i found out that it was a known problem. Also, one that just about everone that i know with a silverado around that same year has had. I'm just glad that my wife or my 16 year old step-daughter wasn't driving when this happened!

Brakes failed completely. After i felt the brake pedel was not right i backed the truck into the front yard, and when i tried to stop there was no pedel and the truck kept going and hit a tree, lawn bench, misc. Objects, and stopped after hitting s retaining wall. I estimate several thousand damage done. I was told the brake lines were rusted.

I was driving when i went to stop and the pedal was soft. The truck still stopped but the pedal didn't feel right. I was able to get to my in-laws house, about 2 miles. When i got out i saw brake fluid leaking from the brake lines running along the frame on the drivers side. They are the lines that go to the abs module. When i inspected further, all 4 lines were either leaking or about to. That is when i noticed both rocker panels, just under the doors, were rusted and the passenger side rusted through. The doors are not rusted and there is very little rust on the truck even where the paint has flaked off.

Upon requiring an emergency stop from 50 mph approaching a stop light at a busy intersection, one of the brake lines burst. The brake pedal went to the floor. (no brake warning light, no low brake fluid light, and no loss of abs light).i pumped the brakes and dropped the transmission into 1st gear in hopes of slowing down before a crash. I made the right turn at the intersection, which was up hill and eventually brought the vehicle to a complete stop. I put the truck in park and applied the emergency brake. Fortunately, the light just changed so the intersection was still clear. The vehicle was towed after confirmation of the damaged brake line. Further inspection has revealed that all the steel brake lines are heavily corroded and are in need of replacement. This issue seems pretty frequent with this particular year and model. A weak or poorly designed brake line should be the responsibility of the manufacturer. Proof of fault is indicated in gm's decision to change the brake lines to stainless steel in newer models. If no recall is issued at least a warning should be given to current owners!!!

My brake lines rusted through and burst when i used my brakes. Could not keep my truck from moving when stopped at an intersection.

Stepped on brakes to stop when blowing snow reduced my visibility, and the brake pedal went to the floor. The brake lines were severely corroded and one of them suddenly failed. Turns out that it's an epidemic with these gm trucks.

Brake lines blew out from corrosion. This has happened 3 times since april2013. I was unable to stop on two separate red light occasions. Also having abs problems. The abs system breaks loose just about when the vehicle comes to a complete stop forcing me to let go and reapply brake quickly. My truck is undercoated also making this deadly problem more concerning. Nhtsa should do its job and stop these death traps.

While driving in normal traffic, i was preparing to stop at a red light with vehicles ahead of me.upon applying brakes from approx 30 mph, i was able to brake like normal, until approx 5-10 mph, when the abs kicked on for no reason, sending my truck within inches from striking another motorist in front of me.it continued to do this for about 3 miles until i arrived home.

Brakes started to slip when applied, taken to shop reported that all brake lines need to be replaced due to rust.

Abs system will activate when applying brakes without cause such as a wet surface

While backing out of my garage i applied the brakes to change direction and go forward. I heard asudden hissing noise through the open driver side window and my brake pedal went to the floor, bottoming out. Upon investigation i noticed brake fluid coming from rusted brake lines behind the left side front wheel. When the brake pedal bottomed, it didn't appear that i had any brake action at all. Very fortunate to have been in my driveway and not at a busy intersection or other dangerous location.

While towing my boat i was approaching a stop sign while pressing my brake pedal it went completely to the floor. I was barely able to get out of the way of the other stopped cars at the stop signi had just enough pressure to stop in the oncoming traffic lane just past the cars in my lane which i was lucky enough to avoid hitting. Thankfully also there was no cars coming in the other direction. I then pulled over and got out of my truck and noticed brake fluid leaking from under my truck under the drivers side door entrance. I then looked under and noticed the rusted lines the fluid was coming from as it was dripping out. This could of been a disaster because if i had made it to the interstate and got on the highway to head home i surely would of not been as lucky. So far my towing cost me 298.00 to get my truck home and to my mechanic where it sits in their lot until monday morning. Luckily my fishing partner was not far behind me and saw me pulled over and then pulled over to see what was wrong. He has a truck and towed my boat all the way home for me which was 60 miles. This was by far the scariest event i ever have had in my truck while towing but do realize that it could of been much worst. After reading all the countless issues that most have had with this i cannot imagine why gm has not stepped up to fix the problem through a recall.

All brake line for entire truck had to be replaced because of rust issues, as well as rear backing plates which had rusted completely away. Abs sensors are activating at low speed on dry pavement causing truck to take longer space to stop

2002 chevrolet silverado.abs issue.driving at less than 10mph, abs pump was engaged and i was barely able to stop the vehicle, i had to use parking brake and downshift in order to get my vehicle to stop.i was within one car length from striking another car on the road.abs is constantly running and kicks in at lower speeds.very unsafe.

I took my 2002 chevy silverado 1500 in to get inspected. It failed due to no parking/emergency brakes. I have never used my parking brake, never beenin thewhere it was needed. I first noticed after removing wheel that everything is rusted beyond what i think it should be at this point, the splash shields are almost completely gone. I removed the drum and brake shoes and noticed that on both sets of shoes, left and right, the pads of the shoes were not really worn, but the actual lining that the shoes are attached to were worn at the very bottom on the drivers side and the very top on the passenger side, both where there are no pads. I followed the directions that came with the new shoes, replaced everything, and still no brakes. I then bought a new cable and swapped it out, thinking the cable may be stretched. Still no brakes. I removed the wheel and drum once again and had someone depress the parking brake. I noticed the actuator working, so i reassembled everything, and still no brakes. I then contacted gm customer service to see if there were any recalls for this problem, i was told that there was not. I was told that i can take my truck to a certified chevy dealer for them to diagnose the problem, at my expense, being that i haven't been able to find gainful employment in over 3 1/2 years, i can not afford this. I was told there is nothing further that can be done to help me. I have less than 2 weeks for my truck to pass inspection, if not, then i must pay fines and costs when i do reregister my vehicle. How do i get my vehicle to pass inspection when there is obviously a defect in their design. I'm hitting a brick wall everywhere i turn. With all the complaints and problems that i see being posted online, how could there not be a recall. What has to happen for them to take responsibility for this problem.

Brakes totally failed when trying to stop. Took the vehicle to mechanic. Told that the brake lines are totally rusted out. All eight lines will have to be totally replaced in order to function. They had never seen a vehicle with such problems. Seems this is a common problem with this type of vehicle.

As i approached a traffic light at 30 mph and attempted to stop, the brake pedal went right to the floor with no warning. I had to vigorously pump it several time to come to a stop and was lucky i was going slowly and there were no stopped cars ahead of me. No warning lights appeared on the dash and still do not if you start the truck. I was close to home and carefully managed to get to my driveway. A large puddle of brake fluid dripped from the driver side beneath the door. When i inspected it from below, i found the brake lines severely corroded where clipped to the frame and one had burst through, causing the leak and loss of stopping ability.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving at 10 mph and proceeding to stop the vehicle, the brake pedal failed when depressed. The vehicle was restarted and functioned normally. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 121,648.

At under 60,000 miles both brake lines from master cylinder were badly rusted. One line failed and the other was in imminent danger of failure. This is an extremely dangerous problem and chevrolet has been resisting a recall for years. This truck was driven mostly in a non-salted roads state. It is unacceptable to have brake lines rusted through in under 60,000 miles. Chevy tries to cut costs and save a few pennies on a component that is critical to life safety and they refuse to make it right when their cost-cutting scheme fails. My second and last chevy.

The brake lines on the truck, which is approximately 10 years old are completely corroded.i happened to be pulling into a service station when the driver side front line completely blew out, spraying brake fluid everywhere.i was lucky.the brakes are completely nonfunctional.i could have been killed or killed someone else if i had been anywhere else when this happened.

There is a major safety design flaw in the 1999-2002 brake system. The front tires through the salt and grime from the roads onto the brake lines where chevrolet has located them in the design. This causes the brake lines to corrode and burst during driving. Mine have now burst for the second time in the last 5 years.the first time in 2013 i was driving at about 35-40 mph when i went to make a rh turn and the brakes went to the floor. This time i had went to a local gas station and was on the way home when i stopped to talk to a neighbor and once again the brake pedal went to the floor.i drive the truck very little so i have only put just over 17,000 miles on the new set of brake lines that i had installed by a chevrolet dealer in 2013. I live in southern indiana, just north of louisville, ky so our winters are not that harsh, so the amount of salt from roads is pretty limited. I have talked with other chevrolet silverado, yukon and suburban owners and they all share having the same issues with their brake lines. I have went to youtubeto see how to make the repairs myself and have seen countless videos on individuals repairing their brakes because of the corrosion and the brake lines bursting.come on nhtsb what are you waiting on before you issue a recall, someone to die or be permanently disabled! do the right thing and issue a recall to fix the brakes with stainless steel lines, rotors, calipers and brake pads that will not rust after a few years!

Stepped on brake peddle at idle and pedal went to the floor.upon taking it to the repair shop, found that the brake lines were completely rusted out and the caliper bleeders were rusted off.all lines, calipers, and two rotors had to be replaced - cost$2,091.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that while inspecting the vehicle, he noticed the brake lines were corroded. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 16,233. Updated 12/24/13*lj

Brake problem with abs. Vehicle did not stop correctly almost causing accident.after researching found recall for abs wheel issue for other states but not texas.vehicle was manufactured in canada.

I was traveling southbound on ct. Rte. 8 at approx 6am at 55 miles per hour. State maintenance vehicles had partially obstructed the road as i rounded the bend approaching thetrumbull town line this in turn caused an abrupt halt of traffic. I applied my brakes rather hard which did slow the vehicle but i still had to swerve into the breakdown lane in order to avoid a collision when the brake pedal went to the floor. Upon investigation i had found that the steel hard line running along the frame rail for the rear brakes was badly corroded and had bust. The rest of the steel lines which all run to and from the abs pump are also in bad shape. It is my opinion these lines be made from stainless steel in the interest of safety. After all they make most modern exhaust in stainless and that is not as important as stopping your vehicle!!!

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving approximately 7 mph, the anti-lock brake system activated and pulsated until the vehicle stopped. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact stated that the failure started intermittently approximately three weeks ago and has become worse. The failure occurred daily. The vehicle was not diagnosed by an independent mechanic or a dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but the vin was not included in a recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 170,000.

For several years, have been out time & expense of installing new park brake pads not needed, turning drums, tried replacing long brake cable under floor, pulled rear rotors several times & re adjusted park brake... 1 week later don't work again.. I have to put blocks under wheels for 3 years to keep truck from rolling down driveway.. Live on a hill..chevy don't need the tension on little bitty park gear in transmission....also have had to fix every dec because safety inspection ends dec,,,neighbors have ford & dodge & theirs will stay in driveway..have no idea how much money & time spent on a gm blunder... Why has their not been a recall ? another cover up by gm executives ?

While backing my truck out of the garage i lost my brakes due to pedal going to floor and loosing brake fluid. I was able to get it to stop with emergency brake. Upon further investigation i noticed all brake lines that route on outside of frame between master cylinder and abs module were rusted badly and were wet with brake fluid.

Brakes failed due to burst line to rear axle; little or no stopping power from front brakes; emergency brake worked for a few minutes but no longer after couple of miles to my driveway. Disassembly revealed e-brake pads had crumbled away inside rear rotors; and all 5 brake lines coming out of abs unit will need to be replaced, not just rear. Fyi i have owned in excess of 20 g.m. Trucks, but none ever as bad as this on brake lines. Daughter in truck with me- this could have turned out very badly. Truck unusable until all lines are fixed- very difficult due to positioning of lines ( i have done many brake lines- on much older trucks).thanks...

My girlfriend was driving my truck went to pull in to a parking spot when she hit the brakes abs kicked in and would not stop the truckcausing her to hit a parked car with a good amount of damage to the other carthe brakes have never giving me problems and now its got no brakes 2002 chevy silverado.

Service brakes failed due to corroded brake line above rear axle. Park brake failed to slow the vehicle due to the rear brake dustshield being corroded to the point is was completely gone. The lack of a dust shield allowed the park brake shoe and linkage corrode andbecome inoperative.

The vehicles brakes failed while approaching a stop sign (i was lucky there was no accident or injury).the vehicle was towed and the mechanic reported catastropic failure of the brake lines (rusted through causing complete loss of fluid).

Rusty brake line broke. Lost brake control for entire vehicle.

I've had to replace calipers, rotors, brake lines the have rusted, brakes hoses that have gone bad and this vehicle is well kept and inside. Low miles for a 2002 and yet all at once everything went bad including my fuel sensor for the gas guage.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While the vehicle was approaching a stop sign, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard when it was depressed. The driver had to apply force to stop the vehicle, which had still gone through the stop sign due to the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed by a dealer. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer was notified and stated that the vehicle was excluded from the brake system recall. There were more than 20 tsbs on the brake system; however, the manufacturer provided no solution to repair the vehicle. The failure mileage was not available.

Brake lines rustd out. Making my truck loose brake fluid and had to be replace,. Serious problem, lucky i did no have an accident. Rust etc, all over the rest of the brake system, very costly, $$$$$, i was driving down a street slowly.

I was pulling my 2000 lb boat to the lake sat. With my 2002 silverado 1500 . I made it to the launch ramp ok but when i went to launch the boat i couldn't stop rolling down the ramp [ no brakes) i was only able to save the truck from becoming a submarine by throwing it in drive and hitting the gas. I drove into the parking lot to find the brake line rusted out . Had this happened at highway speeds it would have been catastrophic . I read online about the issues with the lines and the fact there was a backup. Trust me when i say while pulling a boat it would have never stopped me. I've had cars longer thisin my 40+ years of driving any never had a brake line fail from rust. I would have liked a heads up on this issue as i've seen it to be a problem in multiple years. Needless to say i'm disappointed again by gm by not at least giving the owners a heads up. And i'm thanking god for my wife and i not being injured on a simple fishing trip. Shame on you guys. If it wasn't an issue you wouldn't have changed the lines on later model cars. Just one more push to make me look at other vehicle manufacturers.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Noticed brake fluid was low. Could not find any leaks, while backing truck up, i applied my brakes and the brake pedal went clear to the floor. I used my emergency brake to stop my truck. I immediately looked underneath the truck and brake fluid was dripping from the rear axle. I investigated the brake lines and found them to be completely rusted and corroded. I was just lucky that this did not happen on the highway as it would have been a certain collision causing injuries or death.

Brakes failed as i was coming to a stop sign. No cross traffic at time so no collision occurred. Had vehicle towed to repair facility. All brake lines had to be replaced. Total bill $750.

Brake line ruptured while pulling into parking space almost striking another parked car.remaining brake lines are very rusted and will need replaced.

Leaking fluid found to be brake fluid coming from rust ruptured brake lines, all lines rusted and deemed by dealership to require replacement of lines and front brake calipers.

The fuel lines rust away and start leaking fuel badly. All lines have to be replaced. The rust on this truck is unbelievable. Gm will not stand behind the product. The rocker panels all rusted out as well. The frame is rusting out. These truck are just rust buckets

Driving at 50mph, traffic light was turning red, started applying brakes to slow down, and brake pedal went all the way to the floor.truck did not want to stop at all. No indicator light illuminated or warning light.got truck back home and fluid was pouring out from under truck. Further investigation proved rusted, brake line had split in two. All brake lines on this truck are rusted or corroded.no sense for these lines to be like this. Wonder which one will bust next.gm has a serious problem!!!

I was driving on the highway and hadto stop, the brake pedal goes to the floor with hardly any brakes.ihad to go on the right side of the road to avoid major crash . Was very shocked and heart was racing . I never had that happen before in all the years i have been driving. I managed to make it home by using lower gears and emergency brake to stop. When i finally got home i looked to see what the heck was going on and saw that my brake lines had corroded thru and the fluid was coming out. I went on line to see if there was any others with this problem and saw there were many, many complaints about this issue. I called several places and the cost to replace all my brake lines was around 1200 - 1700. I ended up getting them replaced for $1600.this should not happen. I have owed many vehichles over the years in this same area and have never everhad to replace a brake line. I think this should be a major recall before anyone dies. There must be faulty metal being used in these and needs to be stainless steel. I would like to be reimbursed for the $1600 i had to spend on these faulty brake lines.they need to do a recall or let people know about this problem and reimburse them for the repairs.

One of the rear brakes stopped working while driving.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The brakes failed while driving 50 mph. The dealer stated that the brake lines were corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 153,000.

I was traveling at approximately 5 mph approaching an intersection and applied my brakes.i could feel the abs system functioning as i was on a snow-covered road.after about 1-2 seconds of absactivation, the brake pedal lost all pressure and continued to the floorboard.i was able to coast to a stop and could see the brake line located on the driver side under the driver seat, squirting brake fluid onto the ground each time i engaged the brake.

My antilock brakes kicked in when i was going 5 mph. I drifted right into a road that i was about to enter. I could not stop the vehicle at low speeds.

My chevrolet silverado pickup (1500 4x4) has experienced three major brake failures.the first failure was while driving and approaching a stop sign.when i attempted to brake, my foot went to the floor.after pumping a few times, the truck slowed but with little stopping power.the vehicle was immediately towed and brake fluid was actively dripping from the lines.the second failure was about a year later while driving at low speeds (<5 mph) while parking.again, my foot went to the floor before the abs system activated (completely dry conditions) with essentially no stopping power (abs activation but no braking power).this resulted in an accident as the truck did not have enough room to effectively stop (thank goodness the car in the parking space in front of my was unoccupied).after being repaired by the dealer (twice), the problem just occurred again (approx. 2 years later).

Brake line busted while bleeding air out of system. Found all lines going to abs block in center of truck were rusted completely through. This was not the first time this happened. Had same problem about year before on front brake line. I almost hit another vehicle in rear. I had to have truck towed to local repair shop were they fixed broke line.

Went to stop at stop sign, brakes went to floor, no cars were coming, went thru sign by time e-brake was hit.

I was attempting to stop for traffic ahead, i applied the brakes which initially slowed the truck but then the brake pedal went to the floor and i was unable to stop my truck and hit the car in front of me. Both vehicles sustained only minor cosmetic damage. After making sure the other party was uninjured and waiting for the police to arrive i noticed fluid under the truck. I looked under the truck to find brake fluid dripping from the brake lines that run along the frame rail at the drivers door. All the brake lines where severely rusted and i had to have the truck towed to a repair center to have the brake lines replaced. I don't understand gm's logic of using a stainless steel drive shaft and exhaust systems, but use lesser material for something as important as the brakelines. A recall is clearly in order.

This complaint relates to nhtsa action number ea11001 regarding corroded brake lines on chevy trucks.i was coming up to a red light, some cars ahead of me, going about 30 mph.i applied the brakes.initial pressure on the pedal felt normal, then the pedal resistance dropped to zero.by pushing the pedal all the way to the floor i was able to stop the vehicle.i pulled in to a gas station.brake fluid was pouring out of a location along the brake line running to the back of the vehicle.location about where the cab and bed meet.i was able to drive slowly to a nearby chevy dealer for repairs.total repair bill was $2200.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving approximately 30 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and traveled to the floorboard without warning. The failure recurred three times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vin was not provided. The approximate failure mileage was 125,000. Updated 02/12/16*lj invalid vin number 4/23/18

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 2 mph, the low speed abs engagement increased the stopping distance and the contact could not stop the vehicle. The contact almost crashed into the garage door but was able to stop the vehicle before a crash occurred. The contact released the brake pedal and re-applied pressure to the pedal in order to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 75,652. Updated 07/12/16*lj

In july of 2018, my 2002 chevrolet silverado had major brake failure as i was driving about 35 mph approaching a red light. I pressed on the brakes, it went totally to the floor and i was unable to stop, blowing right through red light.my mechanic told me the my brake line rusted through, and all the brakes lines, as well as the fuel line is totally rusted. I was told that this is very common in this chevrolet / gm model era.he said if all he were to do is replace brake lines in this 1999 to 2006 era, it was enough to keep his business booming. What shocking struck me is that he told me they all fail under the drivers side door, along the frame, before the abs module.this is definitely a safety hazard that should be addressed. Myself, as well as others could of been killed when i was unable to stop at the red light.john d.norristown, pa.

Seems that below 10 mph anti lock kicks in on dry pavement and makes truck hard to stop in motion on road

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 5 mph, the abs system activated and the vehicle lost motive power. There was no warning lights illuminated. A dealer was not contacted. The failure recurred several times. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 82,000.

We have a 2002 silverado with only 28,000 miles on it. We took it to the dealer the other day because of a grinding noise and found out that all 4 rotors and all disc pads have to be replaced. We are told that we don't drive the truck enough for the disc pads to work properly. We have never heard of such a thing and started finding others complaning of the same problem. The dealer (century chevrolet) showed us rotors that were rusy and deteriorating. We live in colorado, rust in unheard of in vehicles here. We do believe that there is a problem with the brake materials.

Abs light keeps coming on and off, when this happens i have no brakes causing me to run out into intersections or property.i have cleaned the abs sensors 2x and the problem keeps persistingthis has happened 3x now.

Front wheel abs sensor failure (2 times) - when stopping, the abs controller modulates the brake hydraulic pressure causing long stop distances.this first incident occurred in 2004 when the vehicle was two years old and again in 2007 when the vehicle was five years old.consequences both times were near misses of the car in front of me.i was able to stop the vehicle with the emergency brake both times before collision.the first time one front wheel abs sensor was replaced by dealer at no charge under warranty.the second time both front wheel abs sensors were removed and coated with an anti-corrosive material by the dealer at no charge under nhtsa recall.

Chevy silverado 2002.at low speeds stopping distance is unexpectedly increased due to the abs preventing a total stop during dry conditions.this occurred coming to a stop at a stop light and coming into a parking spot.the problem has occurred intermittently at least 7 times in the weeks following this first incident.the brakes also make a grinding noise at the last point of breaking.i called the dealership and described the above.they informed me there is no problem with the abs unless the light is on.they said they would have to keep the truck and drive it until it exhibited the problem.i called the gm recall hot line on may 12, 2010.based on my vin he said my truck was not included in the recall but that his notes showed that the wheel sensor had been inspected and cleaned when i had the brakes done in 2007.he offered no help at all.this problem is serious and i will be pulling the abs fuse to hopefully disable the system and avoid an accident.it is clear from the many complaints here and elsewhere all over the internet that this is a safety issue due to a failure that gm should be responsible for.

Corrosion on brake lines in engine compartment with one brake line rupturing and causing a loss off brakes.

Had shocks replaced on my truck today and mechanic informed me that brake lines on my 2002 chevrolet silverado were rusted and would need to be replaced soon for safety reasons.

I have owned this truck from new. It is used for limited hauling duties around town and has very low mileage. Last summer i took it to the chevrolet dealer for pa state inspection. The mechanic drove the car into the service bay and upon doing so, the brake fluid dumped out suddenly from beneath the truck chassis. This was 10 min after i drove the truck to the dealers using a local expressway. The truck was then put up on the lift and i was shown the fact that the brake lines were severely corroded to the point that the brake fluid was dumped onto the floor. I paid $2332 for brake repairs. As a graduate materials engineer i inquired as to the material used for the brake lines and was told they were carbon steel. It offends me greatly that this truck had this severe failure with less than 10k miles, and that gm apparently has been aware of the problem and hidden it for many years. Their focus on saving a buck could have cost lives as a result. The dealer was not helpful in making me aware of any mitigation program by gm. And i am stuck with a large bill for their negligence. I am appalled and an unhappy customer!!!

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that the vehicle was previously repaired under the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). The contact stated the anti lock braking system would engage while braking at low speeds. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop, where the contact was advised to disconnect the anti lock braking module. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 78,000. The vin was unavailable.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that when driving between 5-20 mph and depressing the brakes, there was an increase in stopping time. The abs light would then illuminate on the instrumental panel. The vehicle was repaired for the failure under nhtsa campaign id number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock) in september 2005. The vehicle was later taken to the dealer where they advised the contact that since the recall had already been performed on the vehicle, they were not able to assist. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 90,400.

2002 chevrolet silverado. 41,000 miles. Brake lines rusted out.nearly smashed into an entire family when i lost brakes. Driving for 35 years and have never been so scared.someone please do something

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500.the contact received a recall notice for nhtsa campaign id number (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock).the dealer cleaned the speed sensor, but did not replace any parts.the failure has recurred and the brakes stick when attempting to stop the vehicle at low speeds.on the fourth trip to the dealer, the contact was informed that no failures could be found.she is unsure if the dealer will replace or clean the sensor, but she requested that it be replaced.in addition, the intermediate steering shaft was replaced with a re-manufactured part in july of 2005 at 18,031 miles.in november of 2006, at 29,650 miles, the steering shaft was lubed.in april of 2008, at 43,194 miles, the steering shaft was replaced a second time.currently, at 56,000 miles, the vehicle is still experiencing issues.the dealer must check and replace the shaft failures every 25,000 miles.lastly, the rear brake rotors were resurfaced four times and all of the window regulators have to be replaced.the vehicle is currently at the dealer to have all of the issues repaired.the failure mileage was 18,031.updated 07/02/09. *lj

Brake failure 2002 chevy silverado 44,000 miles. Low speed parking $2,500 damage results in no brakes.

Brake lines and fuel lines must be replaced due to excessive rusting.blew a brake line and had no brakes at all.additionally, the frame has rusted through and had to be welded.looking at repair costs between $1500 - $3000 depending upon how this goes.

Brake lines to rear wheels failed with mild break application . This was due to rusty break lines . There were no brakes at the application of the pedal . This is not a isolated case , dealers have seen many cases of this problem. Today as i had my truck at the dealer another chevy truck came in with the same problem .

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500.when the contact depressed the brake pedal, he heard a grinding noise.he had the tires rotated and asked the mechanic if he could examine the brakes.he noticed a chunky rust build-up on the back surface of the brakes.the dealer stated that the rear brake pads were most likely wearing at an angle.the contact was informed that he would probably need new rotors and brake pads installed.the manufacturer has not been notified.the current mileage was approximately 43,000 and failure mileage was approximately 34,000.

Was driving to the store in my 2002 chevy silverado and out of nowhere the brake pedal went to the floor. Luckily pulled into a parking lot and saw brake fluid pouring out from underneath driver side of vehicle.after looking under the truck to see where it was coming from found all brake lines in that area extremely rusted and deteriorated .checked the reservoir for the brake fluid and it was almost empty . This could of been a situation where a severe accident could of occurred. This happened on 5/21/11 have yet to take the vehicle in for repairs. Just to mention my daughters age 10 and 14 are in this vehicle often with me and i have never seen brake lines on a vehicle this bad considering the vehicle is less than 10 yrs old.

I have a 2002 chevy silverado, that's is experiencing braking failures at low speed , like coming to a complete stop at a intersection. I have almost slid into several intersections and do no longer trust my brakes to stop when i need them. This problem is the same as reported under a existing recall # 05v37900. The problem is that my vehicle is not listed due to it's location, which is north carolina. This recall needs to be expanded to cover addition states.

2002 chevy silverado- brake light indicator came on. Checked fluid levelon master cylinder - 1/2 empty upon further inspection identified leak in section of tubing behind fender well.took to local mechanic.brakes gave way as he pulled into shop.he indicated that all lines were corroded behind plastic wheel well guard.replacing all affected tubing.

Has occurred on multiple occasions.while driving- depressed brake pedal, which went to floorboard and insufficiently provided braking to stop vehicle.no warning provided. Was able to pull to side of road before striking vehicle in front of me.mechanic indicated it is corroded break lines.had experienced similar problem(poor braking approx. 4000 miles agodue to corroded sensor.have not yet repaired vehicle.unusable.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving 8 mph, she applied the brakes but the vehicle did not stop until crashing in her front yard. The crash was minor and the vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop where the contact was informed that some of the braking sensors would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 78,300. The vin was not available.

2002 chevy silveradobrake line burst during normal operating condition.resulted in truck going through intersection with red light.mechanic attributed to rust on brake lines.

2002 silverado z71 stopped for fuel, started truck, put my foot on the brake to put in gear, pedal goes almost to the floor, slowly drove home.i had all the brake lines replaced with stainless steel linesfrom classic tube,i hope you mandate that gmpay for all repairs with submitted bills and $ 2000.00 in compensationfor the aggravation.

I am the original owner of a 1500 series, 2002 silverado, residing in south florida. While exiting the ramp off the highway, at 50 mph, with a 7,600 pound car trailer in tow, i depressed the brake pedal, and it went to the floor! only with the use of the manual override of my electric trailer brakes was i able to stop, avoiding a near miss collision, and a serious, perhaps fatal accident. It was determined one of the brake lines leaked and failed as a "rust and corrosion". The vehicle had 52,300 at the time of the incident, and in florida since purchasing new. With the help of a friend, a temporary repair was made using a compression fitting to allow us to continue our 90 mile trip home. The truck was taken to the dealership who confirmed "rust and corrosion" was the cause, however there were no recalls, or warranty, and i would be required to pay the cost of $738.00 to replace all the lines. At that time i had little choice but to authorize them to proceed. However after completion of the work and my inspection, the lines were installed using interconnecting fittings, at various locations, and not continuous lines as was originally supplied by the factory, nor was placement. I now question the safety of the repair. The dealership advised the work they performed was the method authorized by gm, and continuous lines were not available from the factory. This is probably because gm does not offer them, as the brake lines should have lasted the life of the truck. I have concluded that the material used for the brake lines were of very poor quality. I have contacted gm and continue to await a response from their engineering. The dealership has further advised there was nothing further they could do, and the gm area representative confirmed that with them. I question if it takes a number of deaths as a result of poor quality brake lines before gm takes some action. In searching the internet, i have found many reports relating to thesame problem. So, what will gm do?

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact was driving approximately 5 mph when the brakes failed to engage. The brake pedal was engaged repeatedly before in order to stop the vehicle. The failure occurred whenever traveling between 5 to 10 mph. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was 21,500. The current mileage was 23,200.updated 06/03/10updated 06/07/10

Brake failure, hydraulic steel brake lines rusted and burst when brakes were applied resulting in total loss of brakes. All steel brake lines had to be replaced because they were all severely rusted costing $1400.00.

Rear brake line over drivers side wheel rusted thruchevrolet 1500 2002 4 wheel drive 4 door ls.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While the contact was driving approximately 5 mph on dry road surfaces, the anti-lock system activated and the vehicle would not slow down when the brakes were engaged. Suddenly, the gear was shifted into reverse causing the vehicle to crash into a cement barrier. The contact resumed driving without experiencing the abs failure. There was no personal injury. A police report was not filed. The front bumper sustained minor damage. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000.

I saw the newspaper article on the possible brake failure on 99-03 pickup trucks.this happened to my son in my 2002 chevy silverado in my driveway which is about 100 feet long.he pushed on the brakes andthe pedal went to the floor.luckily he was going slow.there was brake fluid in the driveway. I was outside at the time and got in and pumped the brakes.none.i had to have it towed to a repair shop and they replace a defective brake line.your article has made me fearful for my family.

Sudden metal hydraulic brake line ruptureone of two brake line runs between the master cylinder and abs frame mounted controller ruptured.the exterior appearance of the line is extremely rusty.the line is in a bundle of four lines - two going to the abs controller and two returning from the abs controller to each of the two front wheels.the other three lines have extremely rusty surfaces and appear near rupture as well.the failure occurred when braking for a traffic light and was made apparent by the brake pedal suddenly dropping to the floor.no accident or injuries occurred.the failure is not yet corrected.i have only called repair shop for estimate.the estimate was $400 to $600 per line or $1600 to $2400 for replacing all four lines based on material cost plus $82 / hr labor.

After leaving my house i attempted to stop at the end of my street only tofind that my brakes had failed! i turned around at the next street to return home. I had about 20% brake function so i drove at about 5 miles per hour. On my return home a little dog ran out in front of my truck, i was unable to stop and consequently ran over her. She died immediately, i felt horrible. The emergency brake was applied but too late! the truck has a stainless steel exhaust system but rusty brake lines (poor engineering or cost planning?). Incidentally i was on my way to i-75 where i would of been traveling at 70 miles per hour. If the failure had occurred then, who knows what would of happened? i also have a 1997 blazer that lost its brakes due to brake line rust and fluid leakage. This happened at 55 miles per hour, but i was left with approximately 50% braking power. The difference in braking capacity after failure was dramatic.also there was no warning light illuminated during and after the event. It only came on after the truck was stopped and restarted.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500.while driving less than 10 mph on normal road conditions, the vehicle was slow to respond when the brake pedal was depressed.the contact experienced extreme difficulty coming to a complete stop.in addition, the stopping distance was increased.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for inspection and they stated that the front wheel speed sensor cables had excessive rust.the vehicle was repaired.the failure mileage was 62,012 and current mileage was 62,200.

I have a 2002 chevrolet silverado z-71 pickup truck. I have 105,000 miles on it. When i'm at a low speed my anti-lock brakes activate for no reason and the truck wont stop. I have nearly been in several accidents. I have replaced the rotors and brakes and cleaned and regreased the abs sensors and nothing has changed. Im, forced to take my vehicle to the dealership for repairs. As it turns out, this is a common problem on chevy pickup trucks. This is a serious safety matter and needs to be looked into.

After driving 400 miles to laurel springs ,nc from baltimore ,md through mountain roads and arriving at our destination my wife parked our truck , we got out to go in and open up the house. I then went back to the truck and got in to move it closer to the house to unpack our belongings for a weeks vacation. I started the vehicle and placed it in drive only to have the brakes go all the way to the floor . I then took a flashlight and had my son pump the brake pedal and brake fluid was gushing from the brakeline. I took a file and scraped what looks like little balls of rust and behind the ten or so balls found a hole the size of ball point pen tip.i then spent two days replacing the brake line form parts at the not so close auto zone. I find it hard to believe that 8 year old brake lines would rust that badly , i've had 20 year old vehicle s that didn't have brake lines rust out. I'm just lucky that the line broke after getting to my destination and not on the mountain roads we were traveling. I have the old brake line but left it at the house in nc.

My silverado pickup has had two problems that caused low-speed inappropriate activation of the abs, lengthening stopping distances. Once, about five years ago, and again this year. On both occasions the front wheel bearing hubs had to be replaced to remedy the problem. The bearings are sealed and not serviceable, and when they wear the air gap under the anti-lock sensor starts varying, causing erroneous signals to the abs. The first symptom is dangerous application of the abs at low speed. (i nearly hit the building i was approaching while parking.)

Rupture of hydraulic brake lines including anti lock portion, total loss of braking.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated the vehicle was taken for state inspection and the technician informed the contact that the emergency brake would not function properly. The failure caused the rear rotors to wear prematurely which resulted in the replacement of the rotors twice prior to being informed of the emergency brake failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 18,000.

As my wife pulled into her parking space at work, the brake pedal went to the floor.she was able to stop, got out and brake fluid was leaking from under the truck around the driver door area.since she works at a gmc truck dealership she had one of the techs look at it and found a hole in one brake line and others corroded.they replaced 4 brake lines and one rear brake line due to corrosion.the truck is a 2002 chevrolet silverado.

I have a 2002 chevy silverado that was part of a recall for anti-lock brakes engaging at low speeds (4-10mph).i took my truck to a dealership to have the recall service performed in 2006.now, in 2008, as i was driving through town, my anti-lock brakes kicked in and i almost wrecked into the car in front of me.it now happens on a regular basis everytime i try to brake at low speeds.i called chevy technical support and they were of no help whatsoever.they could not offer a good explanation as to why they would not fix my problem, even though they acknowledge it is a problem and a safety hazard.

Brake lines rusting on my 02 silverado 1500.

Electronic brake control module ebcm (brake traction control module) internally shorted causing pump to run all the time, even when vehicle ignition was turned off. Danger of abs failure and fire without unit replacement.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that when pulling from the driveway and attempting to depress the brake pedal, the vehicle continued moving and crashed into a fence. There were no injuries. No police report was filed. The vehicle suffered damages to the front end and bumper. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the contact was informed that the brakes needed to be replaced; the repair was performed at that time. When leaving the dealership, the failure occurred again and the vehicle was taken to another mechanic who stated that the wheel sensor needed to be replaced; the repair was performed at that time. The vehicle continued having problems and would not stop when the brake pedal was depressed. The mechanic was working on the vehicle at the time of the complaint but still could not find the problem. The vin was unavailable at the time of the complaint. The current and failure mileages were approximately 43,000.

Inboard disc brake pads both front and rear quickly lose contact with brake rotor after replacement - i have been plagued with poor performing brakes since purchase.the inboard brake pad does not self adjust to maintain contact with the rotor.instead it seizes in its stainless steel anti-rattle guides.sometimes it cocks to one side, sometimes it is parallel to the rotor.this causes several problems - first lost of brake performance with long stopping distances because the seized pad is ineffective-this is a safety issue, second the seized pad does not clean the rotor surface causing premature rusting and short rotor life.my rotors need replacing every year or two because of rust on the inboard surface.i have gone through the four original rotors and 12 replacement rotors in 47000 miles and six years since new.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that while decelerating the anti-lock brakes would pulsate, making it difficult to stop the vehicle. The dealer was contacted and informed him that they repaired nhtsa campaign recall, 05v379000, service brakes, hydraulic antilock once before and they were unable to repair it again for free. The vehicle was notrepaired. The failure mileage was approximately 108,000.

Have a 2002 silverado with 46,000 miles and in june 2010 experienced a major brake failure when the brake lines near the frame rail brake/abs controller rusted away.when trying to stop the brake pedal went to floor, was near home and drove the rest of the way.the next day the brake warning light was on, the fluid had leaked out and i discovered the problem - the rusted lines.a $1000.00 of brake work to correct the brake lines, that is replace them and new front brakes because the calipers had also rusted so badly they couldn't bleed the brakes.this is not acceptable for a modern vehicle to have safety parts rust so badly at such low mileage.

Brake lines rusted through on a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500 extra cab 4x4. Luckily no accident resulted with the brake failure. Called chevrolet corporate to check on recall. Nothing noted.

Loss of brakes due to rotted brake lines on a 2002 chevy silverado.

Sudden total brake failure (all 4 wheels) due to rusted under body brake lines.service center is replacing all old lines from master cylinder to abs module and onto wheel cylinders.samples of old rusted lines are being retained.

I drive a 2002 chevy silverado 1500. Yesterday (5/14/10) i was applying my brakes to come to a sudden stop when someone cut out in front of my truck. I lost all braking ability when i applied my brakes to stop.luckily i was able to steer away from the on coming car and ended up on the side of the road.i got out of my truck to check my brakes when i noticed a puddle of brake fluid under the front of my truck. Upon closer examination i noticed excessive rust on the brake line and brake fluid was free flowing from a rupture in the brake line that was heavily corroded.

Front speed sensors failed in 2005before the recall on my2002 chevy silverado z71. Had recall taken care of in 2005. They are failing again this year 2011 and now the rear brake line just ruptured yesterday 12/18/2011. My husband agrees that salt at is part of the problem with the brake lines but the abs sensors is an on going chevy problem in these trucks and once the recall is performed once, the future failures are up theowner to fix and cover the cost. My truck is a 2002 but it only has 76,000 miles on it. All these braking issues should not be happening. And seriously they build these right here too, although mine says built in fort wayne , indiana, you would think they would be better made. And why did the stuff start really failing after my extended warranty ran out? go figure.

Unwanted abs activation and extended stopping distances during low-speed braking.

I currently own a 2002 silverado 1500 z71 with 22,300 miles. Today while driving it i noticed that the brakes were a little softer then normal and not stopping the truck very well. Shortly after that while coming to a stop i pressed the brakes harder and they went to the floor and i had very little to no stopping. I had to use the e-brake to stop the truck and get it off the road. It seems that the brake lines from the master cylinder to the abs box rusted out. This truck is not a daily driver and rarely will see a road when there is salt on it. With this few of miles i don't think this should happen due to the fact that i was lucky and could have been in a bad accident. I have also found out that this has happened on a lot of other silverado/sierras. Currently the lines are still broken and have yet to be replaced but will need to be.

Nhtsa investigation number: ea11001 -brake line failure, steel brake line under left side of cab ruptured due to rust and brake fluid leaked out of brake system.upon further inspection, found all 4 steel brake lines are rusted very badly under left side of cab, additional brake line rust found on all steel brake lines, under hood in engine compartment, along frame, under cab, and under truck bed.one of these steel brake lines ruptured resulting in complete brake system failure due to loss of brake fluid while driving!very dangerous.dealership repaired one failed steel brake line, but would not replace all rusted brake lines.this failure occurred while traveling 45 mph and approaching a red light at busy intersection.brake peddle went to floor, no brakes, down shift automatic transmission to 2nd gear and used emergency brake.i had to swerve and changed lanes three times to avoid accident.there was no warning to this failure.also vehicle is meticulously maintained.please help.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 67 mph over a bridge with brake pressure applied, the brakes failed and the vehicle struck the bridge.no injuries were sustained. The police were on the scene and a report was taken.the vehicle was inspected by an independent inspector who was unable to duplicate the problem.updated 10/4/2006 - the inspector did find four codes stored for the brakes.gm explained that this failure was not the result of the open recall 05v379000 which had not yet been performed on the vehicle.the vehicle sustained damaged to the left side of the cab and box.

I have a 2002 chevy 4x4 pickup that has intrmitent no brakes at slow speed 3 to 10 miles per hour it has hapened 3 times in the last 2 weeks . They tell me the front wheel speed sensors are to blame ?

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact was driving approximately 40 mph and applied the brakes, but the brake pedal released abruptly to the floorboard. The vehicle continued to accelerate. The contact shifted into first gear in order for the vehicle to stop. The vehicle was then towed to the residence for diagnosis. The contact detected the brake lines completely rusted. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified and they stated there was not a recall related to the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 108,700.

I have a 2002 silverado. The anti-lock brake system activates at very low speeds as described in nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000. I live in illinois but did not receive a recall notice from gm or my dealer. I called chevrolet and they maintain there is no recall on my truck. This is a very dangerous issue.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that when braking from 5mph, the abs braking system would activate erroneously. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for repairs under nhtsa campaign id number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: antilock) however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was not repaired a second time. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 53,000 and the current mileage was 94,000.

Abs system failure...brakes fail to work at slow speeds. Previous recall work on this system performed by dealer, still not fixed.

Abs operation goes into anti-lock at low speeds making the truck hard to stop .sensors and pick ups cleaned 12/1/04 .

While having my 2002 chevy silverado 1500 serviced for an oil change i was advised that all the steel brake lines were badly rusted, unsafe, and needed immediate replacement.initial estimates are $2000.vehicle mileage is 98,000.

The brake lines were heavily corroded and starting to leak fluid. They needed to be replaced from the master cylinder back to all four wheels. This was confirmed by dealer inspection. This premature corrosion is a serious safety problem. This is a personal use 2002 pick up truck with only 66,300 miles.

Was notified of the brakes, abs inadvertent activation recall. Took the vehicle in and no issues were found relating to the recall. Several months later the exact symptom described by the recall was happening. Took the vehicle in again and was told that i would have to pay for the repair even though the recall was clearly the cause. The abs activates under 8 mph and when crawling very slowly in heavy traffic. Pedal goes to the floor. I removed the abs fuse to avoid low speed crash. Has not been repaired to date.

I recieved a card to fill out in regard to my chevy silverado 2002 truck.i reported no brake failure at that time on june 3rd 2011 the brake line gave way and nearly caused an accident.i had to take the ditch to avoid it and 2 of my children were in the truck.

1. Normal driving, all vehicle preventiative maintenance2. While driving, the brake lines burst causing lose of braking power.upon inspection, the brake lines were completely rusted through.3. All brakes lines replaced.

I attempted to stop at a stop light. When i depressed the brake pedal it went to the floor and i realized that i had no brakes. I was able to slow down enough to make it through the light and into a parking lot. After a quick inspection i found that the steel brake line going to the rear brakes rusted through, and was spewing brake fluid.this truck is a 2002 model with only 88k miles and is well maintained. I don't think the brake lines should rust through and fail this soon. This is a major safety problem. I was lucky. I was driving slow, was not on a busy street and didn't have an accident. It could have caused a terrible accident! it has not been repaired yet.

I was pulling inot a parking space at dunkin donuts and when i applied the brake to stop it made a noise as if the anti-lock system was going to kick on but immediately stopped and my brake pedal froze stuck at the top of depression leaving me with no brake at all. I hit the cement stop bumper pole, luckily it was there, and caused damage to the front end of my truck.(bumper & framework). Good thing this occured here within a parking area and not out on the road at an intersection which i just went through. This was the first time this has happened but it makes me very weary of the braking system. I disconnected the fuse to the abs system so this will not occur again until it is investigated further.

Abs brakes engage at slow speeds (under 10mph) while coming to a stop.while applying the brake the abs activates and the vehicle lunges forward a few feet until the normal braking activates.this exact complaint was addressed by chevrolet on safety recall bulletin 05058c and this repair was completed on this vehicle back in 2005.the design of the hub allows the reluctor wheel to rust which in turn doesn't allow the speed sensor to achieve a correct reading and has created the exact same issue as addressed in the original safety recall.

When the brake was applied, the vehicle experienced extended stopping distance.

Hi, i have a 2002 chevy silverado i bought brand new. Today i hit the brakes pulling out of my driveway and the brake hit the floor. The line blew out. All of my lines are rusted badly. If you look on the net there are hundreds of posts related to this. Why is this not a recall? this could have been horrible as i was on my way to haul out my 5,000 pound boat! gm needs to address this or at least get word out they used cheap lines and people can easily be killed! jim stacy

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact was driving approximately 10 mph downhill when force was applied repeatedly to the brake however, the vehicle continued to accelerate. Upon engaging the emergency brake the vehicle came to a stop. The contact inspected the vehicle and detected brake fluid leakage. In addition, there was rust corrosion within the brake lines. The contact planned to notify the manufacturer regarding the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000. The vin was unavailable.

I have been having several brake issues with my truck within the last year. My latest problem has been the abs engaging at a near stop around 5 mph. This happens several times within a short trip. After researching this over the internet it appears to be a problem with quite a few chevy truck owners. I work for a major auto parts retailer and have asked several mechanics of a fix or solution. There seems to be quite a few diagnosis mentioned. I would just like to fix my truck properly and not have to worry about getting into an accident with my wife and kids in the truck.

I am having problems with my 2002 chevy silverado anti lock brakes. Brakes activate at speeds lower than 5 miles an hour, and extends my braking distance, which has almost caused several accidents. This is the same problem that is occurring under recall bulletin 05068b, but my vehicles vin number is not listed in the recall. Can the recall bulletin be revised to include my vin number, due to my vehicle is experiencing the same problems?i have spoke with chvey corporate customer service and the dealership, about covering the cost of the repairs or at least partial cost, both refuse to cover anything because the vin # is not listed in the recall bulletin.

After securing 10 pallets in the bed of the truck and beginning the drive home from the local lumber yard, i depressed the breaks to stop at the first light. The brake pedal went to the floor, so i downshifted and began to depress the emergency brake to stop. At this point i had my wife pick up the children so they would not be in the vehicle with me. I proceeded home (less that 1.5 miles) at a reduced speed of approximately 10 miles an hour. Depressing the brake provided marginal stopping capability. It was sufficient stopping power for a vehicle traveling about 10 miles per hour at 100 feet. Under the vehicle after the antilock braking box, the one line was spraying brake fluid when the pedal was depressed.the rust was so severe, when going to cut the line, the line actually crushed inwards with no apparent good metal. In splicing the line i was unable to find the proper clearance to reconnect the line to the antilock braking box, so my mechanic will be working this shortly.the other lines look equally bad so i will have those replaced as well. I have never seen rust this bad on my vehicles even older than this one. Pictures and or pieces of the brake line can be supplied upon request.

The brakes on my 2002 chevy silverado do not work properly the brake pads only seem to rub on the front of the rotors so we replaced the rotors & brake pads & the problem is still there the stopping time is not where it should be.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500.the contact stated that when approaching a stop sign or traffic light, the abs engages too early and the brake pedal vibrates.the vehicle was taken to a service station and it was discovered that the calipers needed to be replaced due to rust build up.the vin was unknown.the current mileage was 105,000 and failure mileage was 10,400.

2002 chevrolet silverado with brake problems. *dtthe consumer stated the brakes and rotors had to be replaced twice. Also, the abs needed to be replaced, but the part alone is $1,000 and the labor is $600.00. The abs activated at low speeds.

This is a follow up complaint to one i called in to the nhtsa to report this problem. I too had a brake line rupture on my 2002 chevy pickup and my brakes fail as a result of corroded brake lines. This truck had already been recalled due to the wheel speed sensor failing at low speed which they gm) also attributed to corrosion. And just last month they failed because of the line corroding and rupturing. I attempted to come to a stop at an intersection when i applied the brakes and the brake pedal went all the way to the floorboard. I eventually stopped just short of the intersection and was able to drive the truck to a service station. I got out of the truck and saw the brake fluid leaking out of the ruptured brake line beneath the driver's side door. I took the truck in and was informed the brake lines were rotted out and would have to be replaced. $1800 dollars later i got my truck back. Let's see how long they last this time..

-the contact stated that on 08/25/06 he took his 2002 chevrolet silverado for recall campaign# 05v379000 service repair, on the abs.after picking up his vehicle he continued to have the same failure.the contact stated that it takes longer for him to come to a complete stop than expected. The contact stated that he has informed the dealership about this problem and has gotten no resolution.the contact stated that this happens almost every day he drives the vehicle regardless of the weather or road conditions.

Help please. Anti lock brakes lock up or go to floor at low speed. Recall 05v379000 covers vehicles with this defect registered in cold weather states extending to maryland and d.c. I live in virginia, but have driven in covered areas, including maryland, pennsylvania, west virginia and d.c. My vehicle has a safety defect that has required a recall. It should not be excluded simply because it is registered on the other side of a state line.

Vehicle was involved in recall for front abs wheel speed sensors, recall was allegedly performed 6/21/05. While pulling into a parking spot applied brakes while turning in, abs engaged at a low speed, approx. 2 mph, and vehicle would not stop, collided with two concrete posts that were protecting the gas meter for the building damaging the front bumper and impact strip. I do not believe that the recall was ever performed. Vehicle is a 2002 chevrolet silverado extended cab 4x4.

The tailgate fell off at 70 mph and the consumer almost hada collision.the consumer had taken the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the safety cable deteriorated and the brakes would be replaced.*sc

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While the contact was driving approximately 5 mph approaching a traffic stop sign, pressure was applied to the brake pedal, suddenly the anti-lock brake system engaged and the vehicle rolled forward. In 2005, the vehicle was repaired under a manufacturer voluntary recall pertaining to the anti-lock brake system. The identical failure recurred in january of 2011 and was repaired by the dealer. Most recently, the brakes completely failed to respond upon engaging and the vehicle was towed to the dealer. The contact was waiting upon a response from the dealer in regards to the cause of failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 55,000.

March 27, 2010 rear driver side brake line burst on 2002 chevy silverado while on highway.when brought in for repair 2 new calipers were needed due to extensive corrosion.repairs came to $617.

I went to stop at street light and the brake went to the floor no brakes at all. Later found brakes lines rusted threw. All transmission lines also rust threw. Price to have fixed over $2000.00

On 11/09/11 i brought my truck in for state inspection. Two minutes after giving the keys to the mechanic, he came back and said that the truck had no brakes. The hydraulic brake line ruptured as he attempted to bring the truck into the garage to inspect. The hydraulic brake lines are all completely rusted to the point that they all need replaced. This is a serious safety issue. Not only should this be recalled and repaired at gm's expense,, more importantly the material that future hydraulic brake lines are made of, need to be regulated as to be a rust free material.

Rusted brake linespossible brake failure.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500.the contact stated that the antilock brakes activated while driving 5 mph or less.nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock) was referenced.the failure could cause increased stopping distances during low speed braking applications, which could result in a crash.the recall applies to 21 other states except for kentucky.the vehicle has not been taken to the dealer yet for diagnostic testing.the failure mileage was 101,000.

While attempting to stop for a red light, the brake pedal went to the floor and i went through the light. After getting the truck stopped with the emergency brake, i found brake fluid leaking from under the truck from corroded brake lines. I made temporary repairs to the leaking lines and returned to my home. I checked online about this problem and found it seems to be a common problem. I also found from forums gm knows of this problem and simply says to live with it. So far i haven't done anything to fix the problem as gm doesn't offer any replacement parts.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving 7 mph, the anti-lock brakes activated without warning. The contact stated that he had release the brakes then depressed them again to stop the vehicle.there was a recall repair made for the service brakes, hydraulic: antilock (nhtsa campaign id # 05v379000) in january of 2006.the contact felt that remedy for the recall was not sufficient. As of may 16, 2008, the dealer had not inspected or repaired the vehicle.the current and failure mileages were 100,000.

I got off work, pulled up to get onto main road brakes felt spongy, did stop, got onto main road traveled 1/2 mile about 35 mph, slowed truck by letting off gas to make right turn, tried to use brakes to slow more, brakes went to the floor. I managed to get slow enough to make turn safely. I pretty much traveled 5-10 mph another 50yds to get into lowes parking lot. I tried to brake again, no brakes. I put truck into neutral and coasted to stop. I got out of the truck smelled brake fluid. Brake fluid was everywhere around my driver rear wheel. I called a tow truck to get my truck home thinking my caliper or hose failed. After taking off my wheel, i found that the steel brake line was ruptured. Called a mechanic to see if he could take a look at it, he said he could maybe late friday, he just did a 2004 silverado with the same problem. I called a tow truck again to get truck to his garage. He calls me late friday evening and said all the brakes lines have to be replaced because of heavy corrosion and maybe the calipers depending if they fail. He quoted me a price at $900. My co-worker had his brake lines replaced not to long ago and his is a newer model.

During braking from 35mph to make a right turn my brake pedal went to the floor. The truck did not slow down enough to make the turn, i drove down a block to the next intersection and used my parking brake to complete my stop. I parked the truck and immediately noticed fluid from the brake line leaking out on ground in the area just below where the drivers feet are. The line is a rigid steel line in a group with 3 others that run from the abs control unit forward and all of these steel lines are severely corroded particularly in the area outside of the frame where the line has ruptured. My truck is a chevrolet 1500 z71 with 126,000 miles and has been well maintained since i have owned it. I feel that this issue is extremely dangerous and have found that there are many others with rusted and ruptured brakes on their chevy trucks. Other people were not as fortunate as me because my son and i made it home and we were unharmed. I feel that it is imperative everyone who owns a chevy truck of similar model year be alerted and warned of this potentially deadly and dangerous brake problem.

Brake pedal suddenly went to the floor as i attempted to back out of a parking space. No prior problems with the brakes.upon exiting the vehicle i noticed a large puddle of brake fluid forming under the vehicle below the driver's door. Called aaa and had the vehicle towed to a local shop.mechanic pointed out that all brake lines forward of the abs pump were rusted out resulting in the failure of one of the lines.he also pointed out that the front calipers were rusted to the point where the bleed ports were unserviceable, requiring replacement of the calipers as well as the brake lines.from my research this appears to be a case of inferior materials used in the construction of the 6 million affected vehicles. Luckily i wasn't at speed when this failure occurred. These vehicles need to recalled, inspected, and repaired at gm's expense before there are any further injuries.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet 1500. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, he attempted to engage the brakes, but the pedal depressed all the way to the floor. The contact inspected the vehicle and realized that the brake lines underneath the drivers side door broke as a result of corrosion.the manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 62,000....updated 12/03/12 the dealer replaced the brake lines and one caliper. Updated 01/05/12

The failure mileage was 105,000 and the current mileage was110,00.

I was driving home and as i pulled into the driveway, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor as i braked.i looked under the truck and it was leaking brake fluid around the driver side frame rail over the gas tank.the brake line seems to have rusted through and burst under light braking pressure.

Red brake dash light turned on. Inspected vehicle and found brake lines rusted through and leaking fluid.

2002 silverado pu, brakingdistance is extended.spongy brakes.once when moving into parking space brakes failed to stop car at 5 mph.no damage.when carrying moderate loads brakes never seem reliable.checked by local mechanic, says ok, but issue remains.

At low speeds the abs system engages when the break is applied causing the truck to brake poorly.until just recently i've had no problems and my brake pads are fine per my mechanic who checked them about 2 weeks ago.while driving the truck i pulled into a friends driveway about 5mph and applied the brake on dry pavement when the abs came on and i was sent crashing into his garage.this has happend almost 20 times since that day.i can not even drive my truck to work anymore due to fear of hitting someone.i have a 2002 silverado xc 1500 4x4 that is very well maintained with 81332miles.my father and brother both own similar model gm trucks both 2000 models with exactly the same problem.nothing has been done as of yet to fix my truck i'm waiting to see if i can make the dealer pay for the damages done and fix my brake system.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet c1500.while driving 5 mph and approximately 3 feet away from another vehicle, the brakes were applied, but the vehicle continued to move forward.the contact stated that the brakes made a very loud noise before the vehicle stopped.the vehicle has not been inspected by a repair shop.the brakes and both sensors were replaced approximately two years ago.the engine size was unknown and the vin was invalid.the current and failure mileages were 35,600. Updated 11/6/07

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500.while driving less than 10 mph, the anti-lock brakes activated unexpectedly.at highway speeds, the brake pedal would extend all the way to the floor or freeze to the point where it could not be depressed at all.the vehicle was taken to a dealer and they found a recall/safety improvement act that listed the same failures as the contact's year, make, and model vehicle.however, his vin was not included in the recall.the manufacturer stated that they could not assist with the repairs; therefore, the contact would have to pay over $500 to have the vehicle repaired.the nhtsa campaign id number was unknown.the failure and current mileages were less than 66,800.

Brake line failure due to excessive rust and corrosion. Luckily i was on a side street diving slow and approaching a stop sign. When i went to stop the pedal went to the floor. I had to use the e-brake to stop and brake fluid was pouring out the bottom of the truck from a very rusted and broken brake line. Why won't gm do anything about this????????

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet 1500. While driving at approximately 5 mph, the contact noticed that the vehicle continued moving when he depressed the brake pedal. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership but the dealer could not duplicate the problem. A local mechanic replaced the brake pads and rotors but the contact was still experiencing the same failure. The contact had not called the manufacturer at the time of the complaint. Chevrolet silverado abs failure , loss of brakes when traveling over small bumps or wet roads. Also loss of parking brake. Dealer said it was only on manual transmission trucks that had the failure...this is not true. All trucks.

Dt*: the contact stated, while pulling into a parking space at 3 mph, there was an unwarranted abs activation hindering the brakes from stopping the vehicle. The vehicle's brakes were inspected and cleaned by dealer's mechanic. This incident relates to gm's recall # 05068 (wheel speed sensor). The failure occurred 15 separate times since the inspection. My submission pertains to campaign id number 05v37900. I would like to inform your office that the same problem occurs on guam as well as the other states you have mentioned in t the recall report. It occurs in both my vehicles1999gmc yukon 2002 chevrolet silveradoboth of which i believe have recalls pertaining to the anti-lock brake system.

Truck equipped with anti-lock brakes, brake pedal descends to the floor when first starting out, and will also do that while being driven.dealership states that this is normal.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving various speeds, the antilock brake system activated automatically and the antilock brake system warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed, but was repaired by the contact who removed the antilock brake system sensor. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000.

I drive a 2002 chevrolet silverado z71. In november 2004 the abs brake system would activate every time i would press the brake at speeds less than 10 mph. I took it to the gm service and they had to replace the entire hub assembly because the sensors were corroded. A recall was issued on the sensor problem. Recently i have an abs light that comes on everytime i start moving. Occasionally the brake light also comes on. I took it in to gm service and was told that the abs pump assy and module were both broken and repair costs would be about $2000. I was told that the brakes worked fine, i just wouldn't have the abs feature. However i believe the abs system is an important safety feature on a vehicle, especially in areas that experience inclement weather. In addition, the service representative told me that the abs light is triggering the occasional brake light. The false positive is dangerous because it can cause complacency where drivers would ignore a real brake failure. I understand that it's impossible for automobile components to last indefinitely. However, it's obvious that general motors trucks have efficient brake systems, especially concerning the abs.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving at approximately 10 mph and attempting to brake, the abs light would not illuminate and the abs would not engage. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the contact was informed that there were no recalls on the vehicle. The vin was unavailable at the time of the complaint. The current and failure mileages were approximately 82,000.

Complaint ref [xxx]on mar 12,2005 i had a failure of the abs brake system that resulted in a complete brake failure!i stopped the vehicle by turning off the ignition.the failure was in a parking lot at slow speed.i had the same type of failure on aug 3,2004.i reported it to the nhtsa at that time.last aug gm ok'd a warranty fix by usingservice bullt. # 02-05-006a-(nov 26,2002).at that time there was damage to the front of the vehicle due to running into a fence.after complaining, they agreed to pay for fixing the damage. Now back to the present failure.the dealership said the problem this time was the wheel hub assemblies which the abs sensors are attached.contacting gm, i told them i believed the repair should be covered under the warranty even though my mileage was 36,500.they said it would not be covered under warranty because it was 3 months and 500 miles over the warranty. I did not agree with them as i see this as a continuation of last august's problem and that it wasn't fixed correctly at that time. I had the truck fixed and paid the $631 myself.i am contacting you because i believe there is an abs brake problem with the vehicle that is not peculiar to my vehicle but no doubt is widespread.i know you do not have an investigation at this time but i think there should be?the fact that there is a bulletin on it tells me it is happening to other vehicles!my vehicle is a 2002 chevy silverado full size pick up.it is not 4 wheel drive and is a c1500.veh id # is [xxx].thank you for your help.[xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

I own a 2002 chevrolet silverado 2wd. When applying the brakes and coming to a stop, there is a pulsation. It feels as if the abs is taking over and releasing, and then reapplying the braking action, rapidly, as i come to a stop. I spoke to a gm representative about a recall that has been issued regarding this problem. The gm recall number is 05068. The representative told me that my vin number was included in the recall, but because i don't live in a "salt belt" state, my vehicle is not being recalled (i live in florida). Apparently, it is the road salt that is used during the winter months that corrodes the abs wheel sensors and leads to this problem. And, although i do not live in a state that uses road salt, i do use my vehicle to tow and launch a boat in the salt water. I believe that because of this use, my vehicle should be included in the recall.

The chevy recall on these brakes should be extended to all states! i live in florida and obviously my truck has been affected by the faulty abs sensor issue.

Spongy brakes, no brakes at times. Last incident feb. 1, 2006 while backing in drive. Pushed on brake and pedal went to floor. A loud rattling, hammering noise came from vehicle and no braking felt.i have complained about this since i bought the truck in 2003 at 22586 miles. The master cylinder was rebuilt about april 23, 2004 and it didn't help; in fact we about lost all braking going home from dealer. I phoned the dealer and he ordered a new master cylinder. It was replaced may 3, 2004 but the pedal was still spongy and braking very poor. When stopped and engine running you can push the brake pedal clear to the floor. I have been told this is normal. Well, normal almost caused a wreck on a down hill t road with my wife with me. I phoned chevrolet customer assistance center (file 1-212176923) for help. A waste of time. I phoned chevrolet motor division (1800-222-1020) and all they suggested was to take the truck back to the dealer, a 30 mile drive one way. They didn't help in four other visits . I did take it back on jan. 6, 2006 for a brake recall on wheel detectors but it didn't help the braking a bit. Thanks.

Our silverado has the exact problem described in recall #05v37900 for the anti-lock brakes. Because we are not considered a "salt belt" state g.m. Will not recall our truck.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While traveling at 10 mph, the contact applied the brakes and there was an increase in stopping distance. The contact stated that the brake pedal would sporadically fall into the floorboard when depressed, causing an increase in stopping distance and time. The dealer advised the vehicle was performing as designed. The vehicle was then taken to a local mechanic where the contact was informed that the master cylinder was defective and was not producing the required braking pressure.the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 3 and the current mileage was 78,000. Updated 10/04/10. *ljthe consumer stated the abs was fixed under recall. However, the problem has since returned. The abs failed under 10 mph.updated 10/05/10.

Dt*: the contact stated while braking from various speeds, the anti-lock brake system did not engage and the brake pedal went almost all the way to the floor of the vehicle.this caused an extended stopping distance and nearly caused a crash.there was a nhtsa recall #05v379000 which pertains to the hydraulic anti-lock service brakes.the vehicle was not included in the recall due to the vin.the pcv valve and fuel filter were replaced. The rear brake pads were replaced and the rotors were machined, the rotors were eventually replaced, there was noise coming from the front end. The intermediate steering shaft was dry. The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving at 5 mph, the contact applied the brakes and the abs system suddenly activated causing the brakes not to engage. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who replaced the front passenger side wheel sensor. The contact called the manufacturer and was informed that the repair for recall 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: antilock) had previously been performed. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000. The current mileage was approximately 146,000.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500.while driving 10 mph, the vehicle became difficult to stop when the abs attempted to engage.the dealer stated that the failure was caused by the speed sensor and the abs hub.the current and failure mileages were 59,000.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving at 5 mph, the antilock brake system would activate independently. The failure occurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the wheel speed sensor mounting surface needed to be cleaned and reinstalled. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 40,800.

Pulling into a parking spot at a slow rate of speed, the antilock brakes kicked in and i could not stop. I ended-up hitting the car in front of me causing 1,100 in damage to her car. This issue was supposed to be fixed in a recall in oct 2005. The fix was a bandaid to the real problem. The abs system is in these trucks are faulty. I was told the best thing to do is take the fuse out of the truck for the abs.

2002 chevrolet silverado with recall on the brake system. Consumer states that he had new pads, rotors, and calipers replaced with brand new parts. He stated that his problem recurred when the brakes failed to work.the consumer stated in dec 2005 the abs was inspected and no problem was found. However, 2 years later the consumer began to experience brake problems. The dealer replaced the front wheel speed sensor at the consumers expense.

While approaching a stop sign at 30 mph driver started to apply the brakes, and there was no response. Driver used additional pressure but vehicle would not stop. Thenbrakes caught, and driver stopped vehicle. This problem has occurred more than once.

Was advised that this was a result of the vehicle not being used enough, allowing components inside the caliper to rust. Dealer rebuilt right rear calipers, turned down both excessively rusted rear rotors and replaced rear disc brake pads.

I have a 2002 chevrolet silverado truck. The truck only has 28,000 miles on it and recently began making grinding noises. I took it to century chevrolet and was told that all 4 rotors and pads need to be replaced. With only 38,000 miles on the truck that seemed crazy. When i questioned this they told me that they hardly ever see this brake problem happening and it's because i don't drive the truck enough so it's rusted out the parts. Rusty parts in colorado is another thing that didn't make sense. They could only do the front brake repair because of my camper so they replaced the front rotors and pads for a little over $400. I started checking around about the brakes and discovered on the internet that there were many similar stories from other silverado owners. There is a large number of people who own these vehicles with parts that just deteriorate. Chevrolet continues to deny that it's defective parts and instead tells people that it's their fault for not using the brakes enough. We use this truck mostly in the summer for camping and traveling but do drive it in the winter so i?m unsure what is considered the proper amount of ?braking? time. The dealer couldn?t give me an answer on that question. This is happening to a lot of other people and they should be warned that part of the maintenance on this vehicle is $1,000 brake job every $25,000 miles or you won't have any brakes. Thank you for your time.

The consumer took the vehicle through inspection and it was determined that the rotors had rusted.the rotors were turned instead of being replaced by the dealer.the consumer was driving the vehicle approximately 3 months later and the vehicle was hard to stop when the brakes were applied.the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer again andit was discovered that the bearing and hub assembly was defective and itwas replaced on the left side.

On 2002 chevy silverado 1500 w/only 25,500 miles, noticed a noise in rear brakes.when rotating tires, discovered both rotors were rusted and corroded, but with plenty of brake pad and thereby causing abnormal wear on brake pads.took vehicle to local gm dealer for inspection by service personnel, who determined same problem, but would not provide good will repair.for obvious safety reasons, purchased replacement rotors and brake pads and completed repairs on our own.we have contacted gm to try to obtain refund of our costs, but not yet resolved the issue.research indicates that gm is aware of this problem with brake rotors.additionally the vehicle still experiences problem w/abs speed sensor requiring additional braking distance at slow speeds, but was not included in the first recall by gm.previously reported this complaint.

Dt*:the contact stated the vehicle brake pads had normal wear patterns but on the inside of both rotors the wear pattern should have been approximately 2 inches but were 3/4 inches.also, there was corrosion on the rotor which caused the brake pad to wear inconsistently.the hydraulic disc brakes had extended stopping distance.failure occurred under normal braking situations. The design of braking system was 4-wheel anti-lock and the nature of the failure was worsening.the contact notified the service dealer who determined it was normal to get corrosion on the rotor.also, the manufacturer advised the contact to take the vehicle to the dealer.the vehicle was taken to the independent shop to replace the rotor and the brake pads.updated 09/05/06.

When driving on interstate brakes will begin to apply without action by the driver, causing vibration and over heating of rotors and stiff brake pedal, this happens after about 15 miles on the interstate and brakes have not been applied.

The contact stated the front brake line was previously repaired because the line had rotted on the underside along the frame rail, where it was not detected. The contact believed the dealer installed used, defective parts for the previous repair. The contact stated he would repair the vehicle himself. The manufacturer was not contacted. Intermediate shaft in 2002 chevrolet silverado rattles since new.temporary fix has been to grease the shaft every few months. Now gm says don't grease the shaft, replace it with new design, but of course, there isn't any warranty now.

I have a 2002 chevy silverado the steering box was replace at 31,166 miles and at 48,000 miles its doing the same thing all over again you can not park the truck and if you are at a stop trying to turn the wheel is hard and a noise coming from the steering box the first time i had to pay 200.00 this time looking to it i feel i should to pay nothing at all and thousands people are having this same problem i read this on a web site and this is a steering problem that could fail and people could get killed or kill somebody would you please look in to this problem before it is to late and make gm recall the steering gear box thank you roger sanson

2002 chevrolet silverado k1500. Consumer states defective part in steering column *tgwthe consumer stated since 2002 the intermediate shaft has been repaired five times, to eliminate the rattle when turning the steering wheel or when going over a bump. The consumer stated he located a gm service bulletin regarding the intermediate shaft.

Vehicle was taken to dealer regarding this issue at 35000 miles, in 2004. They could find nothing wrong. I found that this was a common problem involving only the 2002 model. The dealer said it was not a safety problem, just an annoyance i would have to live with. I still own this vehicle now in 2012 and still see many complaints, ineffective repairs reported, and people not understanding why gm has not done a recall, or issued any bulletins. Why is it only the 2002 model had this problem ?i hesitate letting anyone else drive the truck due to safety concerns it should be recalled.

At low speeds my 2002 chevy 4wd will not turn to the right. Left does not seem to be affected. I have replaced the belt, and the belt tensioner, and the idler pully with no change to the steering. I also have replaced the power steering fluid on a regular basis (50,000 miles between). I was about to replace the power steering pump when i found that others have had problems with the rack and pinion. I am hoping this report will convince gm to issue a recall. Truck has approximately 107,000 miles.

Steering shaft makes noises on turns and bumpy roads.

This model pickup had a noisy intermediate steering shaft replaced in mid 2004 and the replacement made the same clucking noise shortly after and we were told to wait until afix that would last was engineered. We later found gm had a fix but our extended warranty in dec 2007 was over and the service bulletin that would fix this could not be done free. This noise was common and it is loud enough to mask other noises that could cause a wreck or loss of control. Gm should have a recall so they can fix a failed component that finally they got right. Failed component was intermediate steering shaft loose and noisy. Yes, i am i certified mechanic since 1958. Bad spelling but a good mechanic.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500.while driving between 30-40 mph, there was a clunking noise coming from the steering wheel and the front end of the vehicle bounced.the noise intensified when making a turn.the dealer greased the intermediate steering shaft.the failure continued and the intermediate steering shaft was replaced.the failure still persists.the failure mileage was 36,000 and current mileage was 112,000. Updated 03-05-08

Steering column rattling and vibrating excessively on my 2002 chevrolet silverado.while vehicle was still under warranty, the dealer reported that the column just needed to be greased.three days later, the noise was back.same thing was done when the truck was taken back to the dealer.this appears to be a common problem with the pick up.the vibration from the column is enough to put your hands to sleep and the noise is extremely annoying.

The intermediate steering shaft went bad on it i had a mechanic look over the trucks front end thinking the ball joints were bad. That wasn't the case his dad has an 04 silverado that had the same problem. I called my local chevrolet garage in indiana and they acted like they never heard of it. So i called the local gmc dealership and its getting fixed next week. Sense its a 2002 there is no warranty so its going to cost around 200 dollars. It makes a clunking noise in the front end and the steering wheel feels loose. It also makes a weird grinding noise so i hope this fixes my problem!!!

When i turn or hit a bump it makes a clunk, and you can hear it and feel it through the steering wheel, now have 119000 miles on it. I am consurned it my become a safety issue.

When making a turn i hear a thumping noise in the steering column.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500.while driving at an unknown speed, the contact heard a clunking and grinding noise.the failure was noticed when making a right or left turn and appeared to originate from the steering column.the dealer and manufacturer have not been notified.the failure mileage was 49,000 and current mileage was 50,000.

Steering wheel knocks, makes noise.

My husbandand i purchased a 2002 chevy silverado in the fall of 2002.in the fall of 2004, we noticed a knocking noise in the steering column when we would make turns.we had it checked out to find that the intermediate steering shaft was worn.after waiting 6 months to finally receive a phone call from the bill jacobs dealership in joliet,i called and found out that the part had been there and we proceeded to have the replacement made.i called the chevrolet corporation and filed my complaint. Fourteen months after the replacement, the "new gm part" has worn out!i was told by the chev. Corp. That i would have to schedule for another test and then they would proceed after i contacted them with the results from the test.the dealership wants to charge us, the consumers, $105.00 to check it out.we do not feel we should pay out this money when we know exactly what the problem is.why should we pay for a faulty part?there should be a recall on this part.

The consumer stated the steering wheel was difficult to turn to the right. The dealer found an internal failure with the power steering rack.

Brake lines rusting on my 02 silverado 1500.

Twice i have had the spare tire winch cable break on me,if this was to happen in heavy traffic or high speeds it could cause serious injury or death, and i was never aware it was gone until i needed the spare.

Oem hitch on 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500 is displaying cracking/failure around the receiver welds.entire hitch will need to be replaced.

My rear bumper on my chevy 1500 4x4 silverado truck is rotting off the truck, yes rotting never in my life i seen poor quality in parts gm is using, rear bumpers are suppose to protect you from a crash this bumper is rotting off my truck this isa safety hazard and should be recalled.

Was replacing brake lines after a rusty line broke and seen excessive rust on the passenger side frame in the front 1/4 of pickup.the frame has a long hole on bottom of frame spaning about 10 inches and above the same section of frame has a long rustedcrack running parallel with the frame spaning about 8 inches.the rest of the frame looks in good condition.

Brake lines and fuel lines must be replaced due to excessive rusting.blew a brake line and had no brakes at all.additionally, the frame has rusted through and had to be welded.looking at repair costs between $1500 - $3000 depending upon how this goes.

Right side spring shackle failed due to excessive corrosion right side of rear bumper corroded to the point the mount failed.

Frame is rotting out

I was driving on hwy 495 which is a city road towards hwy 19 driving approx 53 mph in crystal river, fl. The vechile ahead of my mine was 3 car lengths ahead when i saw there brake lights on, i applied the usualappropriate brake pressure which is no harder or softer then any other time. Once i slowed down to 40 mph in the back passenger side rear tire felt like it exploded and heard a huge explosive type sound and actually felt the entireback end of my silverado lift up and shift leftwards into the opposite lane causing my truck to also get struck by another truck causing what was a extremely well maintained truck without a single ding or mechanical issues until this occurred. I am a engineer and have never witnessed a tire that looked the way this did , by simply driving . I have all records for maintaince, rotations etc.. Overall i have made multiple complaints and have spent 3500 on tires and repairs and still the truck needs 4500 more . I also have had to replace the rim that the tire were on and these were the recommended tires for my truck.

The fuel lines rust away and start leaking fuel badly. All lines have to be replaced. The rust on this truck is unbelievable. Gm will not stand behind the product. The rocker panels all rusted out as well. The frame is rusting out. These truck are just rust buckets

The vehicle was not taken to the dealer to be repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 61,000. Updated 5/2/11 updated 05/16/11

My 2002 chevy suburban rear lift glass has separated at both hinges.it is currently being held in place with 100 mile an hour tape while i am trying to find replacement glass.apparently chevy will not recall this although it seems to be very common and is an obvious hazard should the glass fly off onto a vehicle behind me.the chevy dealership is charging ~$900 for the part.

The tailgate fell off at 70 mph and the consumer almost hada collision.the consumer had taken the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the safety cable deteriorated and the brakes would be replaced.*sc

The vehicle is a 2002 silverado 1500. The frame cross member that is located just in front of the gas tank has rusted out on the base of the mounts on each side where it is connected to the lower part of the frame. This makes the vehicle not able to be inspected in the state of vermont. The regional chevy rep said it isn't a common problem which leads me to believe it must be a defect in the undercoating done on my truck that allowed this deterioration to happen. The truck is well cared for and should not rust in such a basic structural component.

Rusted brake linespossible brake failure.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500. Upon inspection, the contact noticed severe corrosion of the vehicle's frame. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 108,000.

Want 1600 dollars to replace every line on the truck due to rust...including flexible hose to wheels. Don't have vin no truck at shop until i decide what to do.

Updated 01/09/07.

Right side spring shackle failed due to excessive corrosion right side of rear bumper corroded to the point the mount failed.

Had shocks replaced on my truck today and mechanic informed me that brake lines on my 2002 chevrolet silverado were rusted and would need to be replaced soon for safety reasons.

2002 chevy silverado 1500 lt i have apopping or clunking noise that i can hear and feel on the steering wheel. I am concerned that it might be a safety issue and expensive to repair at that.this has been on going for sometime. This noise is very noticeable when backing up or moving forward at very slow speed.

The other day i heard a grinding noise on the drivers side of the truck. Iknew it wasn't the brake pads since i had changed them a few months ago. It turned out to be the wheel bearings. These are a sealed system and not able to service them on either side. The system has to be replaced. I asked the parts store about these ,and he said common problem and if not fixed , the rotor and bearing assembly could snap off and create and accident. I had a 2000 chevy silverado 1500 that had the same problem.

The rear drivers side tire rubber was very flimsy.rocks were able to get inside the tread and pearce through which resulted in a flat tire. The tire was repaired.*nlm

The front tires on the outer edge are what i call cupping out.i have been to the dealer 4 or 5 times where i purchased the truck and they have acknowledged that i do have a front end problem.they keep telling me it's the alignment causing the abnormal wear but after 5 or 6 alignments you would think something would either correct or the dealership wouldtell me what is wrong with the truck.i went to a different dealership in smyrna appx 9 miles from bill heard about 2 weeks after they aligned my truck and they said the truck was out of alignment.i had to pay for this and this was a rep. From the gm factory telling me what to do.as of 12/2/02 ed boggs the rep said their was nothing else that chevrolet or gm could do. I suggested him give me a truck that was safe to drive or i felt i was safe.bill heard did admit that the wear on 5 tire rotations on the front end was abnormal but was within specs.i gave them a chance and said if you would write me a letter or statement saying that this wear is normal and is not going to affect the normal wear on this truck i will shut up and let it rest.wasn't going to happen! the pulled a print out stating they couldn't find nothing wrong with my truck.i in the meantime have checked a few of the newer trucks i've seen in parking lots and noticed about half the trucks have the same kind of problem so i guess im the only one pursuing the problem.i don't have the money to keep sinking into this truck.on the older trucks i've owned the wear im getting on these tires look like shock or suspension problems but they say no way.so i'm back at square one with abnormal tire wear and no answers and really mad.hopefully you people can help me.thank you [xxx]*dtinformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Twice i have had the spare tire winch cable break on me,if this was to happen in heavy traffic or high speeds it could cause serious injury or death, and i was never aware it was gone until i needed the spare.

Dt*: the contact stated while traveling 40 mph, the vehicle presented permanent to worsening conditions of the steering column.prior warnings included when turning the wheel to the right, the vehicle made a clicking sound and vibration would occur.the steering column gradually became more difficult to turn.the vehicle was taken to the dealer ten separate occasions for the same repairs concerning the steering.upon examination, the dealer determined that the steering shaft needed lubrication and that the vehicle would need lubrication maintenance every 4,000 miles.also, the interior shaft was worn and the belt was broken.the dealer replaced mount cushions, repaired the bushing and steering gear, and provided steering shaft with a lube kit.prior examinations made by the dealer could not identify the cause of the problem. The left rear tire had a broken belt. Updated 12/01/06.

My towing hitch/receiver broke while towing a trailer and turning a corner at 10 mph, 2 blocks from my house. The drivers side of the hitch was so badly rusted, it broke, the passenger side was strong enough that my trailer stayed behind my 2 wd truck and no one was injured. This incident could have hurt someone had i been going faster in traffic when it broke. Now, after this happened, i learned that the 2002 trucks have had this issue for some time!

Oem hitch on 2002 chevrolet silverado 1500 is displaying cracking/failure around the receiver welds.entire hitch will need to be replaced.

We have a 2002 chevrolet silverado extended cab truck.the tracks that the front seats slide on stick out very far in the back.they are made of metal, and they do not have any guards on them.my four year old son climbed in the back seat and hit his knee on the metal track.it cut his knee.this has happened several times.i have even cut my hand on these tracks when i am cleaning out the truck.i have a 2002 ford explorer, and the tracks have plastic covers over them.chevrolet needs to make some plastic covers to put over these tracks.they are dangerous.i am printing this complaint and mailing it to you, along with pictures of the tracks.i will also submit this over the internet.

My 2002 chevy silverado has a no start problem.the truck has always started on first use but after it has been driven and shut off, many times it does not restart.it has happened in all types of weather and and even if only runs for a short period.there is no rhyme or reason to it.sometimes it starts and sometimes it doesn't.after the truck sits for about 2 hours, it usually starts again.i have taken it into the chevy dealerand the starter was replaced.this did not cure the problem.several months ago they replaced the parking switch and connectors.the problem is still occurring and more often.i have taken it to the dealer at least 5 other times and they cannot identify the problem.i cannot drive the truck without worrying that i will be stranded everytime i turn it off.

We bought this truck from an i individual and he had a clear titlewe went to dmv in lexington sc got aregistration and we said they could just mail the title then we got a letterthat the vehicle was previously reported by nhtsa cars program/us federal agency as a junk vehicle said we have till december 4 to resolve this we need your help don't know really what to do.

The cable holding the spare tire on my 2002 silverado failed,my tire dropped from the vehicle and i initially thought that someone had ran into me. I looked in my rear view mirror and noticed my tire heading towards the side of the road. After retrieving the tire and then locating the other related hardware, i examined the cable and it reminded me of a previous failure i had on a cable that supports the tailgate in the open position. When the cable failed on the tailgate, i took my truck to the local dealership and they replaced failed cable, but let me know that there was a recall on the cables and would be asked to return and both cables would be replaced. I was called and the new cables were installed.i was told the failures had to do with a zinc coating either used or not used. I was curious if the same issue could apply to the failure of the cable that holds the spare time?

Frame rust entire frame is rusted away from the can back including cross members holding up fuel tank.

I have had the same problem twice since i have owned this vehicle. I reported the first incident about 3 years ago. I never received a reply from you or gm. On april 30 08 i had the same problem again. I was about to pull into the carport and when i put my truck in drive it suddenly shot forward into a travel trailer and driving it into the wall. Both the trailer and the carport were damaged there was no visible damage to the truck.

Wipers only work on high.

Faulty and inferior design on power windows mechanism. Cable broke on drivers window in oct. 2004, cable broke on passenger side may 6,2004. Both times the window remained in the open position. Cost of $600.00 to repair. Gm would not cover cost because of mileage.

Electric windows fail to go up or down in inclement weather/may get jammed in any position/if open while driving, may fail to close, resulting in dangerous situation for driver if in heavy traffic,etc./window apparatus replaced twice on driver side and once on passenger.

Power window cable on a two year old vehicle snapped.

I had a problem with my left side drivers door window. I lowered it at a mcdonald's drive thru window, and it made a grinding sound and would not hardly roll up. I took my hand and helped it up into place. I paid for the repair at a local repair shop out of my own pocket. The cable on the window regulator was bad. I had to get a new one from c&o motors ( chevrolet dealer) and cross lanes tire and auto repair shop made the repairs for me.

*lj

Drivers side mirror on door vibrates at highway speed. With mirror jumping all around it's hard to focus on what is behind. Consumer stated the mirror was repalced, however the problem still exits.

Windshield washer reservoir leaks and drains totally empty upon activating wiper switch.the hose"blows"out of the unit.i have had truck in for service three times(including today) and they can't figure out the problem as yet.

The right windshield wiper malfunctioned.

The windshield wiper motor failed, and the part was on back order.

I've had to replace calipers, rotors, brake lines the have rusted, brakes hoses that have gone bad and this vehicle is well kept and inside. Low miles for a 2002 and yet all at once everything went bad including my fuel sensor for the gas guage.
