The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. While at a stop, another vehicle crashed into the rear of the contact's vehicle. The contact's vehicle crashed into the preceding vehicle, which resulted in a four-vehicle collision. The driver and front seat passenger both sustained head, neck, and back injuries. In addition, the driver encountered the front windshield and suffered from minor injuries to the face. The driver and the front seat passenger required medical attention. The air bags failed to deploy. A police report was filed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 199,000.
The box that contains the safety switch for deployment was completely crushed, however neither bag deployed causing personal body injury.the force of hitting the wheel was enough to bend it so it needs to be replaced. Nlm
I was in a car accident. While driving, i don't know what happened but something caused my truck to roll over. Earlier that day i remember that my parking brake would not work. I also had some trouble putting the gear into park. My airbags didn't deploy during this accident, and i was driving with cruise control on if that has any bearing on this. Also, my front tires were always needing air.

Someone ran a red light and creamed into us at about 50-55 mph. The impact area was the passenger wheel well area and the impact was so violent that it smashed everything over and including the starter...our air bags did not deploy and i always wondered if it was because the crash smashed the starter and had something to do with the gm recalls now.both my son and i have never been the same after that crash and neither of us can even sleep in a bed from neck and back pain... We both had brain injuries and mine was rather severe where i lost my superior intelligence and photographic memory...and had severe language and speech problems... It was almost like i was dyslexic and i have never been the same. Both our health deteriorated since...i was told 'our air bags would have deployed' if it would have been a hard impact (which it was), since the man's car was totaled for how he hit us without ever braking or slowing down... Since the impact was the passenger wheel well area and corner bumper clear over to the driver side and even broke the starter, i wonder if the ignition did something to make the air bags not deploy. I always felt there was more to this accident, but no one would do anything for us. Now with all these gm recalls, i wonder if there was an issue with this accident.can someone please let me know if our airbags should have deployed with such a violent crash and if when the crash broke the starter if it could have prevented the air bags from deploying?thank you so very much.
The contact owned a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving 45 mph, the contact was distracted and drove off the road into a ravine. The air bags failed to deploy. The contact injured both legs, knees, and ribs that required medical attention. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 194,000.
Suburban was traveling @ approximately 35 miles per/hour when a toyota forerunner illegally pulled in front@ a speed of approx 5-10 per hours and caused a head-collision.forerunners airbags deployed but the suburban did not causing injury to occupant of the suburban.the suburban's damage was both radiators were split into 2 also car needed over 10,000.00 worth of major repairs to front end.after crash car would not start. Possible ignition problem.
My husband and i were in an accident and the bags never deployed. My husband was taking to er and had several staples placed in his head.
Hydraulic brake line rotted out causing me to loose my brakes. Happen on the highway. Almost rear end the car in front of me. Dealer says this is normal wear due salt on the roads. 2001 chevy silverado 1500.93,000 miles.
While driving about 30-40 mph, had "t"-boned another vehicle, and driver's side airbag did not deploy.also, caused motor to be pushed back about 5 inches. Contacted dealer, and informed consumervehicle was not designed for airbag to go off on frontal impact. Please add vin.
While friving on a street i 8nserted a cig lighter in to cig lighger socket. And pulled it out right away. Smoke started.coming oug from dash and vents. I pulled 9ver and poured water into socket due to fire .n9 my battery light and odometer lights do jot turn 9ff wheb key is off. And now i start it and it keeps stalling. Where do i start?
After starting the truck before daylight, the lights would come on as they are supposed to.i would then adjust the tilt steering and the lights would go out. After playing with the tilt a littlemore the lights would come back on and i would drive away.until once while driving in the dark the lights went out on there own. Also the wipers would flinch when i hit the dimmer switch.
Ran out of fuel on highway, fuel gauge all of a sudden drop to empty truck stalled out, just recently purchased truck.previous car 2000 buick lesabre had same issue cost about $500.00 to repair, also have a 1996 chevy van that does the same thing gm can not tell me that they are unaware of this issue, this is a safety issue when you run out of fuel at highway speeds.
The consumer requested assistance for 15 failures and or problems with gm 2001 chevy truck.the steering rod assembly would pop when the steering wheel was turned, the shifter boot ripped immediately, the tailgate straps broke and bent the tailgate, the pcv valve was using 4 quarts of oil and the dealer was unable to find the problem, the battery exploded at 40k miles, the right rear brake on the inside had worn down the metal, the lights on the stereo burned out, the lights had burned out, the valve cover were leaking oil before 100k miles, the fur wheel drive switch had broken at 50k miles, the transmission did not shift at 1k miles and the dealers were unable to find the problem, the engine experienced a pre-ignition knock and the dealer was unable to find the problem, the driver's seat controls ripped at 60k miles, the transmission had complete gone out at 118k miles and the seat belts latch system had become defective. *sc

Emergency light switch on steering column broke off.i noticed it was broken after i bought the vehicle on craig's list.the switch could have been broken for years.
The fuel sending unit in my truck failed at ~ 41k miles and sends faulty signals to the gauge in the instrument cluster.the level indicated on the gauge fluctuates but usually reads empty which leads to a very bright yellow "low fuel" indicator in my message center.i know of at least 4 other individuals who own the same make/model from 1999-2001 that have the same problem.this is a safety issue because 1) i never know how much fuel is really in my trucks gas tank and could be left stranded on the side of any highway at any time, and 2) the bright yellow "low fuel" indicator in the message center that stays on nearly constantly is extremely distracting while driving at night.my acquaintances and i have all notified the chevrolet dealer of our problem and have been told "chevy knows about the problem but will not issue a recall" (paraphrasing).
Parking brake is not holding and we have used it maybe 2 or 3 times. Abs and brake lights stay on all the time. We have a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. I have seen many complaints about this on the iternet. Can you not do something about these complaints.
Wires that are in the steering column that hook up to the multi-function switch break do to use of the tilt-steering. They can break and short out causing the head lights to malfunction or not work at all. Or turn off unexpectedly like in my case. I was driving in the mountains one night around 10.00 pm and all of a sudden my lights quit working.
I purchase my chevrolet 1500 pickup new in 2001 and have maintained well.for no apparent reason, the on board computer warning light will indicate my fuel tank is empty and the fuel gauge needle will go to empty.the light and gauge will remain this way until i turn the vehicle off.at that time it may work or it may not.i currently have 72,300 miles on the vehicle.this occurrence began around 35,000 miles.i have had the vehicle into the dealer several times and their response has been that it doesn't happen when it is in the shop so they cannot do anything about it.i am concern with the current safety recalls with the ignition switch and the possibility that the impact bag may not deploy in an accident may also be an issue with my vehicle.i have not worried about this until the recent problems have been made public.
We own a 2001 chevy z71 pickup. We are having a recurring and possible common chevy problem of the check engine light staying on and the truck failing to start unless the security system is reset. We took it to the dealer and they unhooked the after market remote start a couple of years ago, saying that it was confusing the security system. This did not help. We desperately need a recall issued because we cannot afford to get it fixed otherwise. This has been rough on my husband, because he works away from home and i have had to pick him up in the middle of the night many times.
In about 2006, the fuel gauge in my husband's truck stopped functioning. It showed empty when tank was full. No recall notice was issued to us. When he had diagnosed, the diagnosis was a bad chip or electrical problem, or switch. It would be expensive to fix.at this time i was diagnosed with breast cancer & underwent surgery $ mos. Of chemo. My husband, military retiree, stayed with me in hospital. After my chemo, he had both hips replaced and was being treated until 2013 for spinal injections. In july 2013, he was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer & passed away in august. In the meantime, when he drove the truck he recorded mileage after a fill in order to keep track of amt. Of fuel.i always worried about this as being non-safe, but he could only get into a truck because of his medical condition, so our choices were limited.now after his passing, the truck is in my name but i do not drive it because i am afraid for my safety because of the defect.i am still under the care of anoncologist and need the truck at this time. Are you able to help with this problem? it would relieve the stress & give mepeace of mind regarding my safety.i await your response. I was referred to you by the nhtsa.
Gas gauge shows empty, whether vehicle is full or not. Swings back and forth occasionally. Warning light comes on and off too.abs and parking brake light comes off and on with no detected reason found.
Fuel gauge moves from empty to full and back again while driving, and at times fails to work at all. After taking it to a dealer for repair, the mechanictold me to save my moneythat it would only go out agin, that this was a common problem with this model that gm has just ignorded. I have since spoken with other chevy owners who have the same problem.
Eratic fuel guage.
Parking brake failure - design fault. Per chevrolet dealership and independent mechanic the parking brake failure to engage is due to not using the parking brake each time the truck is parked. This is a design fault as a part should not fail if you use it only as needed. Chevrolet has a recall for the 2001 silverado manual transmission but has not recalled the automatic transmission models with the same issue.abs brakes: abs light generally comes on when driving the truck. Chevrolet has a recall for the abs system failure on the 2001 silverado but has limited the recall to states with more erosion (salt) and therefore is not fixing this issue in texas. Electrical system - instrument panel: the instrument panel displays warning lights, e.g. Abs light, brake light, etc. Intermittently. Chevrolet has a recall on the 2001 chevrolet silverado instrument panel however not for this vin number.

We purchased a 2001 silverado ext in 7-01. Truck had about 16,000 miles on it, when we bought it new/used. Parking brake seemed to be really soft, but lot assured us, nothing was wrong with it and that the new technology we had with vehicle's, made it easier for elderly people and such. Yes the brake works great on level ground, but wait until you really need it like on a sloped driveway............. Or getting the vehicle inspected! this is when they really give you the works!!dealership wanted to charge us almost $200 to fix a 15 minute job, which should have been fixed while it was under warranty. We had an unfortunate incident, which resulted in the death of another person. To make a long story short, i feel it may have been prevented, if these(so called) great anti-lock brakes on gm vehicles did what they are supposed to do. We have encountered several occasions where the brakes go to the floor, get really spongy, even when constant pressure on pedal is maintained, and the result is erratic! what happened to the gmc/chevrolet brand?! ----p.s.- we were told this is a common complaint on the parking brake, but yet there is no recall on a safety defect?! by the way, gm this is the last vehicle purchase we will make from you. It seems the quality and safety factor mean nothing to your company anymore, without trying to make more money from the consumer...oh well, just one less customer!!
My 2001 chevrolet 1500 truck will not start all the time. *nlm
Nothing but problems with truck. First was the slip yoke in the drive shaft, felt like tranny was slipping from take off at start position. Replaced under warranty. Anti-lock brakes would come on with every stop. Usually at very slow speeds, causing truck to exceed 5-10 ft further than it should have.had front wheel bearing replaced, fixed for some time doing it again.also in the mean time, had to have all brakes and rotors replaced.brake system is awful.this could cause accidents.also, has cold engine knock, very loud knock, not a normal knock.something isnt right with this.done this since a little over 20,000 miles, worse when temperatures outside are low.had to have 4x4 switch on dash replaced.kept getting service 4wd unit.out of warranty at this time.i know of at least 4 other with all same problems.still nothing done with gm, something should be done.especially with the brake system.safety hazard.
Brake rotors corroded completely , emergency brake rusted completely , massive rust under truck ,brake calipers rusted , power steering went out ,a.c. Fan went out, short in wiring in door locks and windows, this a 2001, 56,000, miles, low mileage truck to haveso many problems, the dealership said they had not seen this problem before, i looked it up, there is rustingand total corrosion of the brake rotors in many differentstates, over along period of time, even when the rotors are replaced they are rusting completely again. Chevy is selling an expensive truck, and then profiting again on the replacement of the defective parts, and making a premium profit on that too.! they are not bothering to fix a defect that has been going on for a long time.very disgusted with the chevy silverado, my first and last chevy.
My 2001 chevy silverado gas gauge is erratic. Goes between full and empty or not work at all. Ran out of gas and engine stalled , lost power brakes to stop. This problem started less than 1000 miles after warranty expired. Should be a recall issue as there are forums on internet with people with the same problem. Dealer says it is bad sending unit and will replace for $800.

The stalk for the combination turn signal, windshield wiper, cruise control, broke resultedin unreliable operation of the windshield wipers and unreliable turn singal operation. In the case ofthe2001 silverado the windshield wipers activated when the turn signalwas selected. Since this same controlwas used for several critical functions, including turn signals, wipers, and cruise control activation and deactivation, i expect certain failure modes could present a serious safety issue. Researching this issue, it seems to be a common problem on this model silverado and other gm vehicles that use the same combination control.
Fuel gauge, erratic mostly when full, goes to empty (low fuel light), goes half way eventuallyslowly it will go back to full, empty. Parked, driving in traffic. Also gm has problem with the abs solenoid sticking causing brake light to come and a constant humming sound. Tahoes and trucks have this problem. Park brake failure.

The vehicle would either stall while driving various speeds or fail to start. Iwas driving approximately 55 mph when he noticed that the fuel gauge displayed empty which was inaccurate; however, the vehicle suddenly stalled, coasted to the shoulder. Car would not crank at first but then started, this happened several times, the vehicle would sporadically become hesitant to start. The vehicle would also stall periodically without warning. The other components, such as the radio, were still operable.the vehicle would sporadically become hesitant to start. The vehicle would also stall periodically without warning. Seat belt often locks up when passenger is belted in and passenger cannot move.

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled on several occasion without warning. The contact also stated that after numerous occasions the vehicle was able to restart. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 104,000.

Two of the factory exhaust manifold bolts are broken on the drivers side of the engine, the back two nearest the fire wall.there is an exhaust leak due to the factory exhaust manifold bolts breaking off, and the manifold is leaking exhaust which is very close to the firewall material which i am worried that might catch on fire. Gm should have a recall on these exhaust manifold bolts on silverados to fix and repair them.

Loss of coolant no visible leak, coolant is seeping into heads due to faulty castech heads used by gm in the manufacturing of these trucks.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving 70 mph, the vehicle lost power. The contact had to roll the vehicle a mile down the road. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the distributor was full of water, which burned the coil and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred numerous times. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 7,000.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle stalled and the security warning indicator illuminated. The contact waited a few minutes and the vehicle restarted normally. The contact also stated that the failure occurred approximately ten times in the past eight years. The vehicle was taken to nix auto center inc. (700 s george nigh expy, mcalester, ok 74501) in july of 2015 to be diagnosed, but the failure could not be duplicated. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided case number: 8-4865333314. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 138,000.
I am the original owner of this very well maintained silverado. At just 100000 miles i noticed multiple exhaust manifold bolts broken, i had noticed a ticking sound for at least 10000 miles but could not locate the sound, as it turns out it was the broken exhaust bolts.these bolts break off at varying lengths including below flush which is extremely costly to have replaced. After a brief internet search i have realized this is a major issue with a majority of these vehicles. This is definitely an epa concern being the raw gasses are flowing out of the vehicle bypassing the catalytic converter and by not allowing these vehicles to pass regulatory smog certifications. This defect could also be considered a safety concern with the potential for the exhaust gasses to get into the passenger compartment. I truly hope that you can investigate these defective bolts and at the very least get chevrolet to acknowledge the issue and help with a portion of the cost to repair.

Went to change exhaust manifold and gasket when number one cylinder manifold bolt broke off under minimal pressure. Bolt broke off flush/recessed to gasket surface of cylinder head. Inspected bolt and came to the conclusion that the bolt was fractured when it was installed during vehicle assembly. Spoke with dealership and representative pulled up vin history in computer. History showed an error with number one cylinder during vehicle assembly and dealer service representative stated "that motor should have never made it out of the assembly plant." no help from dealership to remove broken bolt so exhaust leak can be repaired. Dealership also noticed that the number one spark plug on the same cylinder was sticking out further than the other plugs. Come to find out that the spark plug hole had not been threaded all the way into the cylinder. No help from gm on that one either. Had to buy a tap and finish threading the hole myself at home. Researched broken bolt extraction for silverado exhaust manifold and have found that this is an epidemic and there are multiple videos on youtube about this issue.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500.while driving at any speed or while making a turn, the vehicle stalls intermittently and has to be restarted.the vehicle was taken to the dealer four times, but they cannot duplicate the failure.there were no recalls available.the current mileage was 86,000 and failure mileage was 15,000. This truck has several exhaust header bolts that are breaking off.this is a major defect and should be a recall to replace the exhaust header bolts they should not be breaking off and they are causing emission errors and needing major repairs.
Exhaust manifold bolts breaking off leaving studs in the headsgm is not standing behind this issue. This is causing co release, high heat in the engine compartment, noise, and an expense that i should not pay for. Some states are not accepting these vehicles now fornot meeting the emission standardsplease look in to this. It is a safety hazard.
The vehicle had been driven for about 15 minutes, consumer shut off engine.next consumer was called by a neighbor stating vehicle had caught fire.fire totaled the vehicle. Fire department stated fire started behind steering column. Please provide any further information. Ts
Initial start of motor has a cold crank noise, once motor gets hot it has a tapping sound.*jg
While proceeding to enter the highway driver accelerated and without warning the vehicle stalled repeatedly.consumer had to pull off the exit ramp. Engine pinging since purchase of vehicle but was told this was normal.however when driving 30-40 mph engine will ping loudly then stall.
Engine has unknown knocking/rattling when first startingvehicle, and could be heard throughout normal driving duringdaytime.dealership has looked at truck, and determined it to be piston slap, and gaveconsumer literature.please describe details.
Piston slap, this is a low end knock that mostly occurs during cold start up and goes away within the fist couple of minutes. This is a continuing problem.the tick / knock that is not normal.
Engine is proned to knocking either when cold start or intermittent travel.owner has taken truck to dealership with the response from them "this is an inherent problem".please describe details.
Van won't run, i have taken to three different dealerships and they cannot correct the problem. No safety defect.
Parking brake hasn't worked since around 20000 miles, brake will depress, but won't keep truck from rolling. Loud piston slap, knocking from engine mostly when engine is cold, goes away after warmed up. This is a z71 and the 4 wheel drive buttons do not work all the time when trying to put into 4 wheel drive. Power mirrors don't work a lot of the time. At least one of the front running lights stay burned out most of the time. Truck is out of warranty now but these problems have existed for a long time. A lot of other trucks of this same model have all the same problems. Gm should address these problems and make them right at no cost to the consumer.
On certain models of the silverado there in a engine noise due to failure of position skirtsand will eventually cause loss of power more emissionsand gm will do nothing about this problem.
Parking brake, day time running lights,o2 sensor, uel gauge .
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500.the contact had to replace the tire holder underneath his vehicle after it failed.as a result, the spare tire rolled onto the road.the replacement holder failed approximately one year later.the contact has had to place spare tires in the back of his vehicle.the road conditions were normal at the time of the failures.the vin was unknown.the current mileage was 107,000 and failure mileage was 75,000.
I was driving down a state road when i needed to stop for an intersection stop sign; my brake pedal went almost to the floor. The braking power was reduced to such a degree that i passed through the intersection just being missed by another vehicle traveling on the other roadway that did not have to stop. The brake fluid reservoir was empty in the front section and only small amount in the rear section. I drove the vehicle the rest of the way at 15 mph because the braking ability was so diminished it would not stop fast enough at a higher speed. My front bumper guard was dented and bent when it impacted a car stop bollard at a stop on the way home. I could not call a wrecker because i had no signal on my cell phone and i could not walk for help because i am disabled and can only walk very short distances (i have a state issued handicap placard). Upon examination a rusted through brake line was found to be the cause. The other brake lines are in the same rusted condition. I sure hope dot will make gm correct this problem before some children are hurt or killed.

If day time running lights are for safety why is it that 2009 (new body style) thru approx,2004 the right front bulb burns out so often.(the left one has never been replaced) s/n.there has been alot of tv and newspaper adds about products like headlight restoration kits.dealers have sales on getting your headlights brite again (for safety reasons) isnt this also a safety issue and why is it happening now.if it is cheap plastic then the manufacturer is at fault for cutting corners

I've had multiple extremely dangerous situation with this vehicle over 2 years. One of the first concern was my headlight daytime bulbs melted to the harness and the one on the passenger side melted thru the number so i started carrying a fire extinguisher behind the driver seat. But one of the most dangerous indecent happened while driving down the highway when my wheel bearing hub gave out n there is nothing else to support the tire onto the truck so my front driver tire went flying off n my truck coming to a complete stop into the ground causing damage to my self, my finder, the wheel sensor, n the driver door. After getting all that fixed i'm afraid of the other hubs giving out. Also when i hit my brakes it seems like there is air in the pedal n the truck will not stop. I don't know if it's bc the sensor got damaged or if the abs box is damage from corrosion and my emergency brake has never seem to do anything. I have replaced many of parts on this truck n when i do it seems like one thing after another.
I bought this silverado nov. 2000, within the first year i had replaced my left front day time running light.to date i have replace this same left front daytime running light no less than 9 times.my wife has a suburban and it is a 2009 and we have replaced the left front daytime running light approx. 4 times.you can not drive down a road or highway and look at an oncoming chevy truck/suv without seeing a day time running light out.there has never been a notice or recall of any type.chevy is getting away with murder.please look into this matter.thank you.
Parking brake, day time running lights,o2 sensor, uel gauge .
While driving at 50mph, headlights went out, causing consumer to have an accident. Dealer notified.
On a recent vacation to canada, my turn signals quit working on my 2001 silverado.i checked the fuse and the turn signal relay and both were good.i narrowed this down to a bad turn signal multi-switch.i also had a switch go out on my 2002 suburban.after talking to a dealer, they have experienced this on other silverado with the same switch.the bottom line is this is costing my a lot of money and i almost got into a couple of accidents on the way home because i could not signal.
Fuel gauge goes emptyto full constantly. Dealer says it will cost 8 to 900.00 dollars to fix. If i am miskaken this part of fuel pump assy.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated the vehicle was parked when he noticed fuel was leaking from the fuel tank. The fuel leak was the result of rust and corrosion. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer to have the failure diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and referred the contact to nhtsa. The failure and current mileage was 101,000.
My brake lines and fuel lines are so rusted i am just waiting for the day that one of them breaks. And possible kills someone. I just hope that it will not happen before gm does something about this problem. I am holding off replacing the lines to see if gm is going to recall this problem. I dont use this truck for fear of getting into and accident!!!!
Rusting fuel line caused a significant fuel leak in the rear of the vehicle near the fuel tank, while repairing that line i observed several other rusting lines in that area brake, and more fuel lines.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that while traveling at an unknown speed, the fuel gauge showed an erroneous reading of empty. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was determined that the fuel sensing unit had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was not available and the current mileage was 109,496. Updated 11/14/12*lj updated 11/19/2012
Erattic fuel gauge operation: fuel gauge reads empty at random times, amount of fuel in tank isn't a factor. Gauge drops quickly from 3/4 to low fuel warning (within a few miles).
Fuel gauge reads empty when full and bounces around after a little fuel is used. I purchased this truck new and this started at about 50,000 mis. And is now a constant thing. I was told this is a $1000 fix and is prevalent on these models and should be subject to a recall but that will not happen.
My drivers side hub went out about 120,000 miles. Replaced it, went out less than over year later, then again less than 6 months later . Tailgate latch broke before then, about one year later, fuel pump went out. Front running lights always seem to have a light out.2009 rack and pinion went out, replaced it, then one year later went out again.u joint went out about same time. And ignition stuck and couldn't take out of gear or turn off. Fuel line unclipped and dumped all my gas,2010 transmission went out. Now my passenger side hub assembly has gone out for first time with abs light on and wheel clanking and separating. Rack and pinion blown also. Repairs not cheap, and always happens at financially bad time. So now it sits in driveway broke down and i'm trying to find a hub for cheap so i can get around again to work etc. Seems like everytime i fix something another part goes out. Never heard about any recall problems till now, and would like to know about any options of getting repair. Its costing me weeks of off time from work. And bills piling up, rent past due, no money to repair, and affecting my could've life. Any help appreciated. I like chevy, buy just feel like mine seems to have allot of problems that has been described in your page i read. In fact had every problem listed plus .please help if you can. My fuel gauge floats back and forth after the vehicle seats idle the fuel gauge will read empty and the low fuel warning light will come on. It does this even if the tank is full of fuel. This has been going on for several months.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet k1500.the contact stated that the fuel gauge works periodically and the part is inside the fuel tank.he stated that it costs $600 just to repair the fuel gauge.the manufacturer has not been contacted.the vin, engine size, and current and failure mileages were unknown.updated 06/28/07
Fuel gauge inside for this truck continues to go to 0 then jumps all over / goes back to half full then returns to the right amount of gas in the tank all the time.
The gauge in the fuel tank goes wild goes from full to empty in a matter of seconds i never now if its full or empty..
The fuel gauge jumps from full to empty it sets off the warning lights.
Fuel gauge erratic.says low fuel upon fill up.doesn't stay settled to give good fuel reading.
First incident of the fuel sensor failing (low fuel light and fuel gauge indicator false) was at 45,500 miles which was covered under warranty the first time. 2nd time failed on 02/16/2009 at 133,697 miles which costs me 754.67. 3rd time which is currently starting to act up again at 174,500 miles, and will probably cost me another 754.67!! first of all i can understand once on a vehicle but 3 times is ridiculous, not to mention the expense!chevrolet should have had some type of recall on this or least figure out what is causing this. No doubt this is a defect with this part and very expensive to repair. I'm about to get rid of this vehicle due to this problem which will still cost me money in the end withtrade-in or selling it myself so i will probably have repair it for the 3rd time. I have researched this problem and it seems a lot of people have experienced this issue. I have lost faith in gm and will probably never purchase another one. This issue could be dangerous if people do not correct this problem. Not everyone has 750.00 laying around and gm should fix for free especially when it happens a 2nd, 3rd time!
Fuel gauge failure and false fuel level readings would lead to possible empty fuel tank, and being stranded away from services.replacement of fuel gauge sensors at a high cost place on the owner of a manufacture defect in product or design.
2001 chevy silverado's gas gauge shows empty and the gas light comes on even with a full tank raising the risk of running out of gas on the highway or in an unsafe location. Quotes to fix the problem range from $500 - $800.
The fuel level sending unit in my 2001 chevrolet silverado is totally inaccurate. About a year after i purchased the truck in 2005 the fuel gauge became sporadic, randomly going to empty then back to full and every where in between.this would mostly happen when the truck was lower on fuel. As the next couple years pasted by it got worse and worse. Finally in 2009 i replaced the unit and fuel pump. The kit included and new connector for the wiring harness, so i was hopeful this would resolve the issue. Well after about a year or less i started having issues again. This time the fuel gauge does not randomly go all the way to empty or full randomly, but once it gets past 3/4 of a tank it cannot be trusted anymore. Especially once you get past the 1/4 of a tank it looses all accuracy. Allot of times it when i start the truck it will be at 1/8 of a tank but as i start driving it will go up to a 1/4 of a tank. Or visa versa. I live in a flat part of the country and this has nothing to do with hills. Last time i filled up it said i had a little less then a 1/8 of a tank (about 3 gallons, 26 gallon tank) and when i filled it up i put almost 26 gallons in. I would replace it, but i don't want the same thing to start happening again.
The fuel gauge on my truck does not read right. It sticks one minute one way , then it will say i have a full tank, and then drop to empty. I am afraid i am gonna be stranded one day, being a woman with children and constantly on the road, this scares me. I have a 2001 1500hd chevrolet 4 door truck. It is not that old to have problems with this. I am concerned over it because my husband has a 2000 chevrolet 2500hd and the same thing happened, one of the guys that works for same company and has truck alike, had to take his in and get it fixed for same reason, then i was telling our friends about it and says theirs does the same thing. All chevrolets, and so we got to thinking maybe this is something that needs to be checked into.i am gonna have to get mine fixed shortly because of the fear of being stranded, i try to keep up with when i put gas in and the mileage, but sometimes you just forget!! please let me know if this is a recall problem or could be in the future. We were just wondering@ thanks!
Gas gauge shows empty when gas tank is full .gas sensor has build-up...tried fuel cleaners. Some help...problem continues.
I had an accident at low speed because of unwanted (abs) brakes activation.i continue to have problems as i stop at low speed my truck moves forward again after the stop causing a possible accident. I bought my truck in florida. For this reason my vin number is not on a recall list due to the fact i purchased in a non corrosive state. I had to come to ohio quite often to care for my ill mother starting in 2009. I also have experienced problems with the sensors recalled, the tailgate recalled(actually fell off the truck 3 times while i was enroute),the fuel tank pressure sensor recall( not letting me know whether i had gas or not), the seats recall.all of this due to faulty parts corroding, after i came to ohio, which is included in the recall.i need my vin number added to the recall so i can have these things replaced by a dealer. I cannot drive my truck now because it isn't safe. I have to transport my little grand children and its the only transportation i have.
Gas gauge registers empty every time gas tank is filled and thereafter until x amount is used and also at random times.
While attempting to shift from third to fourth the engine appeared to have a stuck throttle cable. Pulled the truck safely off the road and check the throttle cable making sure it was not broken or kinked. I restarted the truck and the rpms at idol were at 2000 and then i placed the truck into first gear and began to move forward towards my home. As i shifted from 1 to second the rpms began to rise. As i placed the truck into neutral the engine continued to increase in rpms to 3000 and then onto 4000. I placed the truck in neutral and allow the motion of the engine to push the truck forward and using the brakes i was able to keep speeds below 45 and when the truck came to a complete stop the engine rpms continued to rise above 4000. After getting the truck home and inspection of the throttle body, a half cup movable plate was found attached to the butterfly..this had prevented the butterfly to close and hadtornfrom the butterfly plate. I have not found any documentation on this plate or cup on any sites nor is it mentioned in any owner manuals. I was lucky, but otherswho are not mechanically inclined may not know what to do or even an increase chance of an accident which could result in a death or injury.
This truck has several exhaust header bolts that are breaking off.this is a major defect and should be a recall to replace the exhaust header bolts they should not be breaking off and they are causing emission errors and needing major repairs.
On many gm trucks, suvs and cars fuel sending unit failure is a constant problem. We have replaced no less than 10 of these at a cost of approx. 500.00 per item. This is not an isolated problem with just us. Many dealers see this as a recall item.
Failure of fuel pump in my 2001 5.3 liter chevrolet silverado to accurately determine amount of fuel in tank.when i fill my tank with fuel the gauge reads erratically, the needle pins itself in the empty position.the problem is constant and on going.i notified gm and they offer no repair yet this same problem qualified as a recall for repair on the 2001 model suburban with the 5.3 liter engine. Simply do a google search for 2001 sivlerado fuel gauge problems and you will be amazed at the number of respondents who have the identical problem yet there is no accountability from gm.thank you
My 2001 chevy silverado gas gauge is erratic.
Fuel gauge failure and false fuel level readings would lead to possible empty fuel tank, and being stranded away from services.replacement of fuel gauge sensors at a high cost place on the owner of a manufacture defect in product or design.
2001 chevy silverado 4 door extra cab , brake failuretwo months ago from brake line rupture ofheavily rusted steel brake line, located above gas tank. Close inspection revealedframe and other brake and gas lines, rotors, brake rotor shields, emergency brake cablesbadly rusted! no repairs made yet. 60,000 miles on truck. Body except for rocker panels and rear bumper is excellent ! bottom of truck pressure flushed weekly during winter and spring since 2002. Failure when in my driveway, will replace section of line with leak this week. Is truck safe to drive?
After putting truck in gear (auto) the gas pedal wil occasionally not depress without force. This leads to a sudden burst of speed while truck is in gear.dealer reccommends a $100 throttle body cleaning.if a critical area is getting dirty, isn't that a design flaw that should be fixed by manufacturer? repair "how to" websites talk about cleaning and plugging a hole that lets in dirt
I purchased new a 2001 silverado pick-up. I've had to replace the fuel level sensor@ 48000 miles, tailgate straps@ 65000 miles, and now electric window motor/regulator@ 80000 miles. I've tried to work with gm about the problems and possible reenbursment for these repairs as well as my local dealership. I don't believe after paying over 30k for a new vehicle, gm will not back their products or share in the cost of replacing these overpriced parts. Is there anything that i can do?
Fuel gauge does not work properly, it shows random fuel amounts. It has left me out of gas several times. All my family drives silverados and gmc sierra, and all have the same problem. This is very dangerous, what if i run out of fuel on the high and my truck stalls and causes an accident.
The steering shaft mid-joint is loose and is making a knocking sound, the fuel gauge is moving from full to empty while traveling down the highway, the power windows are losing power, when you power up the windows the headlights dim and the windows go up so slow
2001 chevy silverado low fuel light not working.low fuel light stays on even when tank is full.fuel needle moves constantly from full to empty, regardless of amount of gas in tank.ran out of gas twice due to this problem.how is this not a recall?
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500.the vehicle has experienced several failures since the time of purchase.fuel is leaking from underneath the vehicle and the tire rods and wheel bearings had to be replaced.the current mileage is 90,000 and failure mileage was 66,000.
1. Fuel gauge does not register 80% of the time.after filling up fuel tank the" low fuel light comes on and the fuel needle points back to empty. The fuel needle will start working better after i have burned 1/2 a tank of fuel.i have 4 friends that all have the same truck and all of their trucks do the same thing2. Heated mirror on drivers side quit working.

My gas gauge will take a dive to empty and the light also comes on. This is an on again off again problem. The dealer says it will cost six to seven hundred dollars to fix. I was wondering if there had been other complaints of this nature.
Fuel gauge will drop to show empty when it's not.will also "bounce" irradically from empty to random levels.
2001 silverado z71 5.3l--the gas gauge works only intermittently and often shows wrong fuel level.i have talked to my mechanic and he says that this is a common problem and a costly one to fix.i use my tripometer to estimate how much fuel i have but if the fuel mileage changes, as with towing, it is not reliable.i have run out of fuel and been stranded on more than one occasion.
The fuel gage does not read accurately. When the fuel tank is full, the gage reads empty. After some fuel is used it seems to read properly until around half a tank, at which point it starts to bounce aroud between empty and the proper reading. It will also read empty if the truck is park and idling for a short period of time
Gas gauge bounces from full to empty and reads inaccurate at times even after filling tank.with a full tank gauge will bottom out at empty and initiate low fuel light and then return back to full.
Dt*:the contact stated while driving 75mph on the interstate, the fuel gauge indicator decreased and elevated without warning.the vehicle was not inspected.the manufacturer was not contacted.
I believe gm should release a tsb & repair under warranty to address the poor quality fuel sending units in all 1999-2001 pickups. My 1999 silverado developed a faulty gauge reading approx 50,000. My 2001 happened about the same mileage & age. The dealer service manager tried to say it was bad gas. I know better. I have 3 friends with silverado's & all developed erratic gauge readings.
Fuel gauge not working properly on my 2001 chevrolet silverado.it seems to be a common problem on the 2000 and 2001 trucks.
While driving on a residential street i attempted to apply the brakes and the brake pedal went to the floor. After about 20 feet the truck did stop with the brake pedal almost on the floor. The truck had to be towed and the front brake lines where rusted and leaking and replaced. The rear lines are also rusted and need to be replaced.the total cost is about $500.00. I have had to replace the fule line as it also rusted and leaked, that cost was $900.00. Apparently gm has had numerous problems with this. In over 40 years i have never seen lines rust through like this.it is a seroius problem and could have resulted in a major accident if the area had been more congested and speed greater.gm should be putting quality material on such a vital system. Also the rear brakes where almost non-existent due to the gm abs design. This gives no braking ability and should not be that way.as far as safety goes this should be a number one issue as brake failure can be letal, gas leaking isnt very safe either.
First incident of the fuel sensor failing (low fuel light and fuel gauge indicator false) was at 68,400 miles.2nd time failed on 04/16/2011 at 98,500 miles which costs me another 800.00 bucks.this is the 3rd time its starting to act up again at 118,300 miles, and will probably cost me again!!i can see it happening once, but not understand how it can happen3 times that is ridiculous, not to mention the expense! chevrolet should have had some type of recall on this or least figure out what is causing the problem.there is no doubt in my mind this is a defect with the part and very expensive to repair. I have researched this problem and it seems a lot of people have experienced this issue. This issue could be dangerous and people have little choice for safety reasons but to correct this problem at great expense. This needs a recall ..not everyone has $800.00 laying around and gm should fix this for free especially when it happens a 2nd, 3rd time! come on gm your rep is on the line..
Purchase new in 2001, around 35,000 miles the fuel light would come on for no reason, even when tank was full.while driving the system light would show low fuel and the fuel gage would show empty.took to dealer several times and told they couldn't find anything wrong. I was told by a mechanic student at school that the sending unit and wiring was bad. I received a gm notice about the fix but dealer said that wasn't the problemi have 72,000 miles on truck and it stills jumps to empty for no reason.
Coming up on a red light, i applied the brakes to slow down to a stop, when the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. Only then did the brake light come on. I put the truck in neutral, and finally coasted to a stop. Upon finding a pin hole in one line, the complete brake system failed. Once replacing the brake lines, the fuel lines was also so rusted, and they were about to fail.
Fuel gauge is not operating on full tank of gas it states empty and varies from empty to full and back.## vin passed ##
I purchased this truck usedapprox. On 10/2016. Shortly afterwards i began to smell gas. I found the fuel lines rusted through and had to replace the fuel lines from the tank to the engine.last week a brake line failed due to rust pulling up to a stop light. The pedal went right to the floor. A line had to be replaced from the abs pump to the rear axel. I was told at that time the rest of the brake lines were in very poor condition. The cost to repair will exceed the value of the truck.

My husband and i were in an accident and the bags never deployed. My husband was taking to er and had several staples placed in his head.
Fuel gauge goes to full, back to empty. Low fuel light comes on. This goes on all the time you driving the vehicle.
I have tried to stay with a gm product but the truck i recently purchased had the following problems, while trying also to avoid the most common problem of the gm bad frame,by the way toyota warranties there frames. The 1st month of ownership the rear spring shackles broke there are 30 year old trucks that still don't have this problem,i own one. Next about another 30 days go by the electric fuel pump decided to die. That so far brings repairs up to close to 650.00 after 60 days. Last wk. My brake line failed @ about 50 mph,no warning light right to the floor.this truck had been taken care of . Should i continue about the hole in my windshield frame every time it rains my ash tray is filled with water. By the way i was quoted about 1400.00 for all the brake line repairs. Wtf gm who has that kind of money for repairs,i dont. The public should be compensated for substandard material use.
Evaporated system.
The latch on the right side is week and keeps bending, not allowing the latch to engage correctly and has disengaged many times.
Tailgate does not latch and never has. From time to time it just flops open and hope whatever you are carrying does not fall out.
Parking brake is not holding and we have used it maybe 2 or 3 times. Abs and brake lights stay on all the time. We have a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. I have seen many complaints about this on the iternet. Can you not do something about these complaints.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving various speeds, a grinding noise was heard.the vehicle was driven to an independent repair shop, who determined the parking brake was metal to metal.the rotors were shaved and the pads were replaced.the dealer was not contacted.updated 1/19/2007 - the emergency brake pads were completely worn.the pads on the regular brakes still had over 50% use left.the consumer claimed that he only used the emergency brake twice.the brakes are not self adjusting but have to be adjusted manually.
Parking brake does not hold. About a year to 18 months after the vehicles (2001 z71 cheverlet and 2002 surbuban) the park brake fails to hold. As time went on, the parking brake pedel needed to be depressed lower and lower until the brake would no longer hold the vehicle.
Vehicle was parked, pressed parking brake and brakes went all the way to the floor.consumer contacted dealer, and they stated that it was normal.the consumer checked several other gm trucks and found that some of their parking brakes also go to the floor, the consumer is concerned that when adjustment is needed the adjustment rods will have no adjustment left, the consumer believes that the wrong cable length was used either front or rear.*nlm
Parking brake failure on 2001 chevrolet 1500 series pickup.consumer reports magazine published a safety alert for this same problem stating that 1999-2005 models are at danger because of friction that could make the parking brake ineffective.our understanding is a recall has been issued for the manual transmissions, but not for the automatic transmissions which is what we have.we took one of the trucks from our business fleet (comprised of 15-20 chevrolet 1500 series pickup trucks) to be inspected today and it failed because of this parking brake failure.there was another gentleman at the inspection place with a chevrolet 1500 truck while we were there, and his truck failed for the parking brake also.we contacted moritz chevrolet, a local dealership, and they stated that they see large #s of vehicles come in for this same problem.the auto inspection establishment said they same thing - they fail countless numbers of 1999-2005 chevrolet 1500 pickup trucks for parking brake failure.it is going to cost us $200 to have this repaired.chevrolet clearly knows that there is a problem, and a recall needs to be issued at once.this is a safety hazard.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado.the contact took the vehicle to themechanic to have the brakes repaired.as the mechanic was changing the brakes the mechanic notice that the parking brakes were worn out.the mechanic informed the contact to replace the park brakes on the vehicle due to the fact that if the contact applies the parking brake the vehicle can roll down a hill and cause a crash.contact was informed that there was a recall(05v161000) but is unsuccessful getting the vehicle repaired because the recall is only for manual vehicle and the contact own a automatic. The current and failure mileages were 100,400.
The parking brake cable broke, preventing the brake release and preventing car from moving. When i bought a new cable at the dealer the parts counter man told me "it is common for these to break". If my wife had been out in the evening, she could have been in a very dangerous situation. If this is "common" i would like a recall so they can all be replaced with an improved cable.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500.the contact stated that the parking brake would not hold the vehicle when it was applied.the mechanic stated that the vehicle's design caused the parking brake pads to rub against the drum.as a result, the parking brake was ineffective in immobilizing the parked vehicle.as of november 19, 2007, the mechanic had not repaired the vehicle.the manufacturer stated that his vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign id number 05v161000 (parking brake).the current and failure mileages were 104,000.updated 3/5/09 updated 03/10/09.
Emergency brake does not function.
Parking brakes on a 2001 chevrolet silverado. I have 42000 miles and this is the second time the parking brakes wore out prematurally. Have never been abused and use normally. The first time around at 21000 miles. Parking brakes linning are worn beyond recommended thickness and cannot hold the vehicle. First time i replaced the linnings and will again have to place the linings. Never told about premature lining failure when i purchased the first set.i don't belive parking brake lining should wear out at 20000 miles.
2001 chevrolet silverado pickup emergency brake failure. Recall doesn't include trucks with automatic transmissions, but they have the same brake systems. My emergency brakes are not working although i have only used them a couple of times in four years. Also, after questioning other people with same trucks they find out that their brakes are not working either.
Chevrolet has a defective clip that is on thier emergency brake system and they know this but are not doing a recall to try and solve this problem. There is a technical service bulletin out on this problem but they still are not accepting fault and are making the consumer pay for thier mistake. After repeated phone calls to them i did get them to agree to pay for half of the fix on my 1/2 ton pick-up. My question is why is nothing being done about this problem? it is not so much the money i had to put out of pocket but the fact they know there is a problem on all of thier trucks made after 1999.
Upon taking my truck to get inspected, i was informed the emergency brake was completely shot. I took the trcuk to the dealer to get it replaced and was then told that all four brakes were gone (down to the rotors). The truck only has 42,000 miles and was not driven that hard since purchased.
Parking brake failure. Gm put out recall for manual transmission vehicles but not auto trans. Truck would not pass state inspection. Took to dealer and paid to have it fixed.
The parking brake is worn off. It did not pass the state inspection and now it will cost me about $350 dollars to get something fix that gm should recall. Not being able to use the parking brake could of being very dangerous to my family in case needed. Thank god this did not happen. Please report this to gm and have them do something. Thanks.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500.thecontact heard a scrapping noise in the vehicle.recall campaign# 05v161000 wasrelated to the parking brake failure.the failure mileage was 52,000. In october 2006 the dealer stated that therecallwasnot related to this vehicle due to the brake pads and rotors being worn.the current mileage was 61610. Update *4/23/07 *
My 2001 chevrolet c1500 silverado is two years old and due it's first state inspection. The truck would not pass because the emergency brake would not stop the truck, even sitting still at idle. The emergency brake has never been used, but both emergency brake shoes were worn out and one rotor/drum was ruined.
Hydraulic brake failure. Nhtsa action number:peo5020 was told by the dealer this was likely the "wheel speed sensor" and required a complete wheel bearing replacement as that is the only way the "wheel speed sensor" could be replaced. I became suspicious after looking at the "service advisors" writ-up which was nothing like i had described to him or the mechanic and nothing like they had told me the repair was. When confronting the "service advisor" about the way it was written up, his response was "this was my way of writing it up". After looking up the nhtsa information which i printed out, it appears the manufacturer was to pay for the complete repair. I was charged by the dealer for the complete repair. After getting home i searched the internet for recalls and here i am - looking for help in this fraud by the dealer. I am now suspicious that they might be double charging - ie: charge the customer and also charge gm? another repair i had completed at the same time was a defective parking brake - total failure. Nhtsa action number: eao4011 was told by the dealer mechanic the linings wear even when the parking brake was not applied. Required liningsand other part replacement for which i was also charged. In the recall vehicles i did not see my vehicle however the mechanic described the condition just as the recall notice described it so i'm thinking this vehicle might also be included?they also recommended a brake flush - which i had done and now am thinking this might have been required when the recall work was completed?i first started noticing the problem (nhtsa action number: peo5020) when pulling into parking spaces this winter however dismissed it at first thinking i may have been on ice. I came very close to smashing into a block wall on one occasion, a fence and parking curb on others. Thanks.thanks.
Emergency (parking) brakes has never worked on my vehicle.when new i noted that it would go completely to the floor when engaged but assumed that it was simply different than past emergency brakes.however, i discovered long ago that, when engaged on a hill it simply had no effect!given that i have an automatic transmission i do not bother to engage it but, if ever needed in an emergency situation it would be completely useless.it is clearly a faulty design. Chevrolet should have done something about it for all owners, not just those with manual transmissions..
Parking brake, day time running lights,o2 sensor, uel gauge .
Gradual failure of parking brake. Parking brake failed to hold vehicle in place while jacking or in gear with automatic transmission. Provided no emergency braking. No action taken to correct. A recall waspresent for manual transmission models only even though the brakeswere identical.
I lost my brakes completely, luckily i suspected a brake line leakage due to the brake fluid needing to be refilled prior to my trip. There was confusion amongst drivers ahead of me merging onto the highway, everyone got hard on their brakes including me. My abs kicked on and immediately the line ruptured, i saw a mist of brake fluid in the drivers side mirror and my brake pedal dropped to the floor rendering my brakes useless. I missed rear ending the person in front of me by inches. My truck is currently in the shop getting all of the brake lines replaced due to the fact that they are all rusted from front to back and deemed unsafe.
I started noticing rust spots on the body of the truck. Then i realized it was rusting out holes in the truck in certain areas. After i started noticing these spots, i was driving down the road towing my lawn equipment and heading to my next jobsite. When all the sudden i went to hit the brakes and nothing happened. The truck would not stop at all and course i was going down hill. So i started to try and slow down the truck by downshifting to a lower gear and was able to slow down a few miles per hour but not near enough. As i was coming around a curve not long after the brakes started failing. Not to far in front of me was stopped traffic. I tried to do everything i could to stop but it was not enough. I only slowed down to 45 mph before i was about to hit the back of a car head on. So i did the only other thing i could to maybe make it out without a fatal crash. I went off the road around the car and hit the parking brake and nothing happened because it failed as well. So i turned the truck real sharp to dodge the trees and slid sideways for a while and the truck finally came to a stop and i was so sick i had a bad panic attack and started throwing up and my heart felt like it was being hit by a hammer and my body hurt so bad from the truck coming to a stop and me slamming into the arm rest and the seat belt cut my neck stomach and chest. I got out and looked at my truck and noticed i hit a pile of logs and damagedmy tires and the body of my truck in the several places. Then i took it to a auto shop and they found out chevy didn't put any corrosive protection under the truck or on parts. The brake lines had blew out cause of the rust. All the brake lines were shot along with all the other brake parts and just about everything under the truck and outside the truck is solid rust. I could have got killed if i didn't react well. Now i pay for a truck i can't drive.
This truck has been a nightmare concerning all aspects of braking system.first at 44,000 abs sensors needed to be replaced, then at 53,400 all 4 new rotors and pads all the way around, 82,000 miles parking brake needs replaced, 81,000 front axle seal leaking, then at approximately 88,000 miles brake lines pops with trailer attached.truck is towed to garage only to find that brake lines are rusty and popped.all lines were supposed to be replaced total cost over $1,000.at 96,600 need front rotors and rear brakes, at 126,00 need rear rotors and front brakes and 1 original brake line from rear to front and right front that never was replaced.cost 268.00.used different garages for work and both have had trouble replacing hydraulic lines and one is a state inspection station.braking system has cost me a fortune and i will not buy another chevy due to high repair cost.truck was not neglected and serviced regularly.had to replace transmission at 114,000 miles which left me stranded once again.
Transmission lost 1st and reverse. Spoke with transmission mechanic and learned that the gm 4l60e uses "pressed powdered metal" to manufacture the sunshell in the 4l60e. Learned that mechanics refer to the 4l60e transmission as a "140 thousand to 160 thousand mile part" requiring a very expense rebuild or replace. Also learned that aftermarket sunshells are available in case hardened steel for about $50.00 usd.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving at 50 mph, the vehicle emitted smoke. The contact stated there was excessive amounts of transmission fluid underneath the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed that the transfer case was fractured around transfer case housing. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 200,000.
*sc
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500.while driving 70 mph, the vehicle switched from two wheel to four wheel drive automatically. As a result, the transfer case detached from the back of the transmission and the driveshaft fell out and locked up the vehicle.the four wheel drive light illuminated prior to the failure.the contact did not drive over a pothole.the vehicle was towed to the contact's residence for repair.the failure mileage was 135,000.

While in motion, a component in the differential failed, creating an interference condition locking up my rear end. Luckily i was not traveling at highway speeds, and was just around town, traveling at about 30 mph. There was no warning of parts failing. There was ample gear oil in the rear end, and maintenance was not a factor as i did a gear oil change this past summer. I seldom use this vehicle to tow and it has never seen a plow or overly rough driving conditions.
While driving on the highway on us route 15 the transmission let loose.doing 55mph and lost drive and 3rd gears.fluid and parts were spread all behind my truck causing a dangerous situation.

The service dealer turned the rotors at 4,000 miles.the first time the dealer replaced the both front bearings and abs sensors. The consumer had to pay for this repair.this time the service dealer replaced right and left hub and the abs sensor.the abs activated as the vehicle was slowing down.the rotors had to be turned at 4000 miles.
Dtthe dealership came on june 27th, 2005. The differential that drives the wheels in the back on the van made a noise. Took vehicle to the dealer 5 or 6 times, they rebuilt it twice, and keptsaying it wasalright to drive. My wife was driving ,and it locked up. The vehicle is currently at the dealership.
While makinga turn rear end locked up. This caused the vehicle to pull hard, skid, and come to an abrupt halt. This problem was due torear differential failure.
Clungnoise in driveline like sloop.

Passenger side seat belt retractor locks passengers into the seat and it gets tighter upon passenger movement and will not release.this occurs on level ground and it does not matter if the vehicle is moving, stopped or not running.this is over a $600.00 cost to the consumer not including taxes.

Front seatbelt does not release properly.belts have been replaced 3 times.4thtimedealer put an extentioner on. It solved that problem . Beltrises up near pelvic area of body which is not safe. Please provide any further infomation.
Driver's sideand passenger's side seatbelts will lock up and will not release, causing seatbelts to become unusable. Cause unknown. Dealer notified.
Had to brake hard andsteel brake line burst. Pedal went to floor and started to move forward. Looks very rusty. Front seatbelt failed, doesn't retract.

Autoride suspension, not working. Harsh ride without shock dampering. Front passenger seatbelt frequently locks up and will not extend enough to secure a person. Seat belt often locks up when passenger is belted in and passenger cannot move.

The rear passenger side seat belt in my 2001 silverado is stuck in the retracted position. It has been this way since 2004. About the time i noticed it was stuck, i had heard of a problem with seat belts with chevrolet's.
(1) no prior events leading to the failure(2) the passenger rear seatbelt will only retract and is very hard to retrieve.my four (4) year old son was sitting in the seat and the belt started to tighten up and he was being constricted so much that he couldn't breathe.i noticed the event taking place and immediately stopped the vehicle and unbuckled him. (3) the seat belt is to be replaced at a whopping $250.00 charge from the chevy dealership.the entire seat belt and retraction device needed replacement.we switched his seat to the other side.we thought maybe it was the belt being tangled up inside the retraction device, however the chevy dealership stated that it was a malfunctioning retractor and entire seat belt needs replaced.

Drivers bucket seat:as i was putting on the seatbelt, the drivers side seat back broke.i removed the seatback frame in order to repair it and found the bracket that is bolted to the lower seat frame was torn almost completely apart on the lower left side and the weld that holds the tube into the upper right side was broken.i decided to replace it rather than repair it as i felt it was a safety issue. This truck has never been in an accident.

While trying to fold rear seat down, consumer was trying to flip a lever that is on seat and when flipping lever up, the seat slammed down and consumers finger was in the hole of the lever.seat amputated the tip of consumers finger.. Consumer stated there is metal on the passenger side of the rear seat, however the drivers side is solid.
My driver seat has come free for the floor. Not 1 not 2 not 3 but 5 time since i have purchase my van in 01. The dealer will not fix it because it out warranty. How can seat brake with every use. It almost crast my van. Can same look in to this problem with this seat it is the 5 time they fix it.
The brakes failed in traffic approaching a stop light. A severe collision was narrowly avoided. The mechanic determined that a brake line between the abs controller and the master cylinder had rusted through causing a sudden rupture and brake failure. In addition, all brake lines were found to be severely rusted from end to end.
Brake lines are extremely corroded. These could rupture at any time with no warning. Contacted gm was told since vehicle is out of warranty they are not responsible. I have other cars/trucks that are older and have no brake line corrosion. This should require a recall immediately before there are deaths from these inferior brake lines.
While backing my boat up a small grade in my driveway, one of the brake lines broke causing me to loose complete braking system.no brakes at all.i was able to get the boat into the garage due to the fact i was pushing it up a small grade.i had just come off of the freeway during rush hour traffic.had the line broke while trying to stop on the highway there could have been a major accident due to complete brake failure.after inspecting the brake lines they were all found to be covered with rust and had to be all replaces.had over a $600.00 repair bill.
Simply driving west on north ave at 25 - 30. Had to apply brakes getting close to intersection. Brake pedal went to the floor, had no brakes at all. Tried using foot operated emergency brake but it did not work either. Put it into 4 wd low to slow as best i could. Drove off the road onto grass to avoid car ahead of me. Drove very slowly in 4wd low to f&f tire at 410 n. Moorland blvd the closest car service shop about 2 miles from where brakes went out. Service tech checked and reported the brake lines are extremely rusted and one let go. Later he reported all lines were extremely rusted and need to be replaced. This truck has slightly more than 50,000. It is always kept in a garage when not in use andrarelyused as per 50,000 + in 13 years. Had rust problem with brakes when vehicle had less than 30,000. Still have the original rear calipers replaced at that time showing outer pad on driver side never moved to contact rotor, but inner pad rivet was gouging the rotor. Brake pedal went close to floor during first month of purchase. Called dealer and was told "that's how anti-lock brakes are". Truck was taken in (dealer) for routine checking & to install fog lights. Check-off sheet never mentioned anything about brakes.have replace 4 electric window motors on passenger side so far. Last time operated the window less than a dozen times before window failed to open again. Dealer always claims rust is because truck is not driven enough. Website complaints about rusty rotors and brakes proves otherwise, over 400,000 hits when i checked after my brakes/rotors rusted away. This vehicle is a lemon and i would never buy another gm product.
Luckily, i was stopped at a local bank atm machine, and while sitting there, a plume of vapor occurred around my vehicle, which i first thought it to be a ruptured coolant hose, as the vapor had the smell of some type of fluid. I pulled aside and saw that it was a ruptured brake line. This occurred in february of 2013 and again in july of 2013, as i just had all the brake lines replaced. On the first occurrence, i starting thinking outside the box, that regardless of the exposure of such lines in the northeast, that they should be made of a resistant material (re: ss). Luckily i was stopped on both occasions, and at the very same spot on both occurrences?? figure that one out. I ever made contact to gm, as most vehicle exhausts are ss, now why do they not make brake lines and fuel lines out of ss? hey! we all the know the reason why! i totally feel that gm owes me and many others a reimbursement on the needed repairs. Truthfully! i am lucky that my vehicle was stopped on both occurrences! what could happen in so many other situations! i use my vehicle a lot to transport my young grandchildren, and thank god that they were not with me, and that i was not traveling when both of these incidents occurred. Thank you for letting me submit!
The 1st incident this year happened in march 2012. While traveling down a hill at 25 mph i pressed on the brake pedal and it went to the floor.i had to use the emergency brake to bring the truck to a stop on the level at the bottom of the hill.thank god there was not any one crossing the street or another car in front of me. The mechanic said the left rear brake line had ruptured from the metal line being corroded.cost $300.00 + towing.cost to replace all lines is over a $1,000.00.cannot afford new truck or that type of expenditure at this time.the 2nd incident happened today, may 2012.while traveling on a level highway at 35 mph a car pulled out in front of me from a gas station and i had to hit the brakes hard.i felt a pulse in the brake pedal and it went to the floor.to avoid hitting the car i went up over a very high curb, over a walkway and through a parking lot. I jammed on the emergency brake to bring it to a stop.looked under the truck and the frame is covered with brake fluid under the drivers seat.another guy stopped to see if i was o.k..i had him press on the brake pedal and looked under the truck.you could see the fluid squirting out of 2 corroded, ruptured brake lines.had the truck towed.i have had problems with metal corrosion on this truck since day one.the rear bumper had extensive rust in 3 years.went to dealer, got the run around. I replaced all four brake rotors with less than 35,000 and the pads were maintained during this time.went to dealer, dealer said thatwas normal wear for a rotor.give me a brk.it sounds like bad metal was used throughout this truck.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. While attempting to stop the vehicle by depressing the brake pedal, there was an increase in stopping distance. When the failure occurred, the brake pedal vibrated and traveled to the floorboard. The failure occurred when driving at low speeds. The contact mentioned that the failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who replaced the brakes on all four wheels, but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The failure mileage was unavailable.
During deceleration the brake pedal exhibited little pressure and traveled to the floor.braking ability was severely compromised but the vehicle came to a stop.inspection of the undercarriage revealed a severely corroded brake line located just aft of the cab which had ruptured and released a significant amount of brake fluid.
The brakes failed due to corrosive failure of brake lines. Complete replacement.
Loss of brakes due to rusted brake lines
Brake system failure: september 16, 2018 rear brake line snapped while driving causing immediate loss of brake fluid and loss of braking. Owner was driving 20 mph on dirt road and was able to stop vehicle using 4wheel drive low. Brake line was replaced 9/18/2018 and the mechanic noted he'd never seen anything snap like that before without evidence of direct damage. On inspection brake fluid was corroded despite having been recently changed out.brake system second failure: on april 16, 2019 vehicle failed to come to a stop while owner was braking for a stop sign. Vehicle slowed but didn't stop despite brakes applied. Owner was ticketed for failure to stop. Owner on turning vehicle on after traffic stop saw abs light now on (wasn't on prior to this) and on braking to turn vehicle then failed to brake completely at which point both abs dash light and red brake warning lights came on. Owner again stopped vehicle using 4 wheel drive low. Owner immediately inspected vehicle's brake fluid levels and found fluid was again low despite having just been serviced on april 10, 2019 with engine replacement and brake inspection. Owner added fluid, looked for leaks and on "pumping up the brakes" felt sufficient pressure to then take the vehicle back to the repair shop that replaced the engine and inspected brakes 6 days prior. The vehicle was evaluated by licensed mechanics and determined to have had abs module failure, brake fluid failure (again) and complete brake system failure. The abs control module was repaired/replaced, brake fluid was evacuated, flushed and replaced. The vehicle has been maintained with regular brake system maintenance. It has not been abused or subject to any conditions that would cause the type of brake system failures that it is experiencing. Because of vin for this vehicle it was not included in gm recall for vehicles having these problems
A car pulled in front of me as i was accelerating so i had to slam on the brakes which went straight to the floor and was unable to stop. I was able to swerve to avoid an accident and pull into a parking lot. After parked i opened door and pumped brakes and the brake line was broke on the rear passenger side. There was no way to stop as the brake pedal went straight to the floor and the brake fluid pumped out the broken brake line. There is no warning for this failure and no leaks or dash lights prior to this line breaking on the way to work. I have been reading of many people with the same issue of the brake lines rusting on these vehicles. This is a real issue and people will get in accidents. I am very lucky i was able to swerve and avoid an accident. Not everyone will be this fortunate. I hope there is a recall on this issue.
Our truck was being painted at aamco.we got a phone call from the aamco that the brakes had failed while the vehicle was in their possession.we had the truck towed to a repair shop.the repair shop stated that all brake lines on the truck has rusted through completely.they also stated this is a well-known issue amongst chevrolet trucks, and they see this time and time again.the cost of our repair was approx. $1450.00.the good news is that no one was driving the vehicle at the time. Someone could have been severely injured or even killed. If this is a known issue with chevrolet trucks, then chevrolet should recall the trucks and perform a proactive repair.
While pulling boat out of water at marina, pulled truck up ramp to parking lot and when my buddy hit the brakes, the brake pedal went to the floorboard. When we looked under drivers side door, we could see break fluid leaking out of brake line. Took to mechanic ,lines all rusted out. Checked my lines on my 2001 chevy silverado when i got home, same problem, all rusted. Truck is parked until recall.
This is the 4th time i have blown a line on this vehicle. The first 3 were within the last 2 years. First, pulled up to a light at 25 mph and managed to stop after i ran the light. No traffic, no crash, and i am not sure of the mileage. Second, parking truck at home, blew a line. Less than 5 mph, no damage, again, not sure of mileage. Third, pulling truck into a garage to replace a u-joint, blew a line. Less than 5 mph, no damage, not sure of mileage. I had all of the remaining lines replaced at this time. Fourth, yesterday (october 23, 2010) driving in a construction zone on the highway, 40-45 mph, came up on slower traffic, blew a line, rear-ended the small truck in front of me and shoved him down the road. Both vehicles damaged, mine sustained significantly more damage. I purchased this truck february 1, 2007 with 60,119 miles on it. I generally drive my vehicles many years. I have never had this many brake line issues. My ford truck with 135,000 never had a line blow, 1995 thunderbird with 125,000 one line blew, 1991 t-bird, 214,000 miles never blew a line, i could go on, but none of the others have blown lines either.
Went to sears to have their technicians replace rear brake calipers and they refused because they said my brake lines were so rusted that they were about to break if they tried to replace the calipers. They advised me to go to the dealership milton ruben here in augusta georgia or someone who deals with replacing steel brake lines. After further investigation of the steel brake lines they are completely rusted throughout the truck from front to back. I will be taking a picture tomorrow for my records.this is a real safety concern and i will be taking it to a service shop to be replaced as soon as possible. I am glad that sears pointed this out, it probably saved some lives.
Brake lines have rusted through, causing line to rupture while in operation, nearly causing an accident.this has happened twice in last 9 months.
Anti-lock brakes engaging on dry pavement. Not allowing truck to stop safely while trying to park. Hit a concrete wall today. Chevy claims to have already repaired this in 2006but apparently not. If it were fixed this would not be a problem. Just thankful no one was hurt.
I was driving to alabama from florida. When i was about three hours out i was going down the road hauling a lot of personal items since i was in the middle of moving. It started storming real bad so i slowed down to 60 mph and as i was approaching another vehicle they all the sudden slammed on their brakes. I saw them as soon as they did it then i slammed on my brakes and the pedal went straight to the floor. I almost hit them but i turned sharp and went into the woods. I didn't hit anything but small trees so very little damage to outside of truck. Damage is still their because since the wreck i have not been able to work cause i destroyed my back and neck. After that i still had to drive the truck the rest of the three hour trip that ended up taking nine hours of extreme pain and shot nerves. Once i finally got home it took forever and a lot of money to half way fix the truck. Since you can't get replacement lines and had to have them custom made. Truck is still crap because now every single part of the brake system is shot along with the body and undercarriage. It is solid rust now and keeps braking down and will cost around three to five thousand at the cheapest to fix. If i would have known what i do now then i would have sued chevy and this worthless organization cause yall have known about this problem for a long time and did nothing. I think yall and chevy owe me and thousands of other people a lot of money. If you still do nothing i will go to every news organization or any other company or lawyer that will go after your company. You are here to protect people from things like this but all you have done is hope we all die. I will spend the rest of my life trying to shut you down and make every person that works for this crap organization responsible for every person that gets hurt or dies. Just do your job that's all i want.
When backing out of drive way brakes failed, i was lucking no car were coming on the road i backed onto. After getting it stopped i pulled back in drive way and checked it out. The brake line going to the back brakes had a hole in it. I had this happen to me in sept 2013 on another brake line.
Brake pedal vibrates and buzzes.brakes do not engage. Vehicle was recalled and repaired for this before, andnow it is doing it again, several years later.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that the wheel speed sensor and the abs sensor illuminated intermittently. The contact applied the brake pedal and the vehicle jerked forward as the brake pedal was applied. The failure occurred on numerous occasions. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 20,100.
Complete brake failure, coming to stop sign at intersection. Brake pedal went to floor without warning or notice of a problem from dash. Coasted to stop and put transmission into park to complete the stop. Inspection after the incident, found major brake line corrosion (steel and rubber ) through out the vehicle. This vehicle was on it's way to the turnpike, for the trip home just prior to this incident.
Brake line ruptured, all brake lines are corroded, i have never seen brake lines in this bad of a condition on a vehicle that is only 12 years old.chevy should own up to their cheapness and do safety recall.
Brake lines rusted through, fail failure do to faulty brake lines. Why arnt brake lines stainless steel. This is a huge saftey hazzard. Need to be recalled.
My 16 yr old son drove thru an intersection with no brakes. Just avoiding an accident. I know 4 other people that own the same kind of vehical with the exact same problem. I will be contacting them so they can also fill this complaint out. Do people have to die to get this mess fixed up ??????????
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving approximately 10 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and failed to respond without warning. The vehicle stopped after crashing into a curb. There were no injuries reported. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the brake line was rusted and fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 126,523. Updated 1/15/16
My truck was parked and when i started it up the brake pedal went straight to the floor without stopping. I stepped out of my vehicle and there was a pool of brake fluid on the ground. The mechanic had to replace all the brake lines due to them all being badly corroded.
Brakes failed. Brake lines broke due to rust.
Abs activation on dry pavement at low speed and this happens consistently. This causes vehicle to travel further instead of stopping. Sometimes feathering the brake pedal can keep abs from activating. I have read countless articles about this problem with many other chevrolet pickups.
My fiancee was on way home from work and was caught in stop and go traffic (thank god she wasn't going speed limit) and the brakes went completely out. Went completely to the floor and bumped a vehicle in front of her 3 times before she got it to stop. No damage was done and she was ok. Had the truck towed home and pulled into my garage to find the brake lines under the cab was severely rusted and 1 line had a stream ofbrake fluid spraying out from it. Now i will be spending the next few days replacing new lines threw the whole brake system front to back.
Upon a routine gof (grease, oil & filter), the mechanic at the tires plus shop at okeechobee, fl, investigated a low brake fluid issue and upon troubleshooting, the brake line burst, leaving no brakes. The mechanic called me out to the garage bay and showed me the rusted line(s) and suggested that they all be replaced. I had brakes upon arriving for the gof), so this was an unpleasant "surprise". The vehicle could not be driven, so i was unable to shop for a competitive job estimate. Also, i had to abandon the vehicle and arrange a ride, as the vehicle would remain overnight at the tires plus garage.upon a subsequent internet search, i learned that this is a particular problem for silverados and suburbans vintage 1999-2006, and was encouraged to file this complaint. I have the receipt for the work which was approximately $600.
There was a recall on august 29 2005 for this problem. Recall number 36327i have this problem with my truck right now how should i handle this situation? it is the hydraulic: abs sensor (the problem started slowly and now its bad) i just found out about the recall.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that the brake pedal traveled to the floor when it was depressed. After inspecting the vehicle, the contact noticed brake fluid leaking. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing, but was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 130,000.
The break lines on my 2001 chevy silverado failed causing me to have to replace all of them. They rusted through
Even after the recall was performed for the low speed abs activation the abs is activating again.this time causing me to run into a concrete wall.i contacted the dealer and they said the recall was done back in 2009.obviously that did not fix the problems.
I have a 2001 chevy silverado 1500 extended cab pickup truck that i purchased new.a number of years ago there was a recall for antilock brakes in rust belt states. Supposedly the sensors were dirty and needed to be cleaned.wisconsin was initially not a rust belt state but eventually was included.prior to its inclusion my antilock brakes were malfunctioning on a regular basis and caused three near miss accidents before i pulled the fuse to cut power to the system.after wisconsin was included i took my car in - the sensors had rusted away to non existence.they replaced the sensors.about 9 months ago the truck began to exhibit the same failures causing more near misses.i contacted gm.they refuse the repair it a second time.so i have disabled antilock brakes again.i think gm should be made to replace their sensors and they should be designing sensors that don't rust away.
Rear steelbrakeline failure caused by rust-through,causing complete loss of brakefluid. Leak wasat bend over frame bracket and fitting for flexible rubber hose for rear axle brake . Did under vehicle inspection of brakelines on vehicle, all brakelines front and rear need replacement because of severe rust and corrosion. Lines between master cylinder and abs brake controller and lines to all service brakes need replacement. Loss of rear brakes caused rear brakes to fail. Remaining front brakes system would have been useless if loss was at high speed.
Anti-lock engages at low speeds causing a no brake situation. Almost hit car in front and stationary objects.
Making a left hand turn after a stop lite put my foot on my brake pedal and it went to the floor, almost hit car in front of me, stopped and saw my rear driver side line leaking.
Pulling into a driveway a brakeline ruptured along frame rail in front of drivers door.have had to replace about 20 feet of line on more than three occasions.latest incident was replacing the fuel filter, the fuel lines are corroded and leaking fuel.my local dealer has refused service on a vehicle more than 10 years old.now what?
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving 40 mph, the brake module malfunctioned and caused the abs pump to lock up. The contact was unable to stop the vehicle. In addition, the brake lines were rusted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage was 157,000. Updated 04/18/17 *lj
I was traveling south on high st. In cortland ohio, and went to apply the brakes to stop for a light, the peddle went to the floor. I averted an accident by steering left and applying the emergency brake.
Yet another brake line story to throw on the heap.full disclosure, i do mechanic work on my own cars and periodic inspections as a result.the areas of the failures, including mine, are difficult to see when inspecting.anyway, on the highway doing about 65 went to start slowing down for my exit and the pedal just kept going.i feverishly pumped the brakes and started gearing down and trying the ebrake.no ebrake, which i though was odd because its mechanical and it worked just fine before.no warning lights, no indication of the brakes going bad and narrowly missed vehicles as i brought it to a stop.the brakes that you do have are so minimal, their just about useless. It was the main feeder line to the rear brakes, before the rubber flex line to the axle, right on a bend.interestingly enough, 12" away from the significant blow out, not a pin hole, it was still have way decent to use a compression fitting for a temporary fix.why are companies allowed to use steel for brake lines in the first place, even coated, once it scratches that's pretty much the beginning of the end.both fuel and brake lines should have to made from that will not rust, along with the fittings.i understand routine maintenance, but brake lines are in no way routine maintenance.i actually contacted chevy about this matter and basically got nowhere, the senior adviser, [xxx], just kept telling me things i already knew and stating the warranty had expired.just talking in circles and towing the company line.no assistance and really could care less.i wasn't looking for a handout, just some help with a significant expense that i did not anticipate having to pay.dealer said it was going to be $1400 parts and labor.i really hope it does not take people dying to take action, i told them how about being proactive for a change, it fell on deaf ears.thank youinformation redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Second time i lost all brakes in this vehicle.lost all brakes due to rotted lines.
Brakes were staying applied after braking.smell of burning brakes.brakes and rotors worn down and braking distance was affected.brake hoses were failing and had to be replaced along with rotors and brake pads.emergency brake was worn down also.rear brakes and rotors had been replaced 7 months earlier.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that the brake lines had extensive rust to the point of corrosion. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who diagnosed that the brake lines needed to be replaced. The vehicle was no repaired.the manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 135,000. ...updated 09-05-14 updated 3/30/2015
I purchased this vehicle new and have maintained it appropriately.over the period i have own this vehicle, i have had to replace the parking brake system z(cable) twice because it broke.i thought it was from fair wear and tear until i reviewed the over 381 complaints about parking brake failure.i wish to be notified concerning any recall or reimbursement for repairs.my vehicle currently has 72,300 miles.the cable first broke around 35,000 miles.
Complete brake failure due to ruptured line caused by excessive corrosion.after applying brakes and receiving some resistance, brake pedal went completely to floor.very minimal braking was available by rapidly pumping the brakes and liberal use of the parking brake...i was able to finally get the vehicle stopped after traveling about 2 blocks.i was thankful no traffic or pedestrians as the possibility of serious injury/death and property damage would have been extremely high.after safely stopping the vehicle i discovered one of the brake lines which run along the left frame rail in a group of 4 lines, had ruptured.all four brake lines had significant corrosion...i thought brake lines were stainless steel... I also noticed mild corrosion on the adjacent fuel line, which appeared to be aluminum.it's a good thing i recently got my parking brake rebuilt...the middle cable broke (also from corrosion and in about the same area as the brake line failure) and during repairs they ended up having to replace the backing plate and entire emergency brake assy, also due to corrosion.i do not have a boat, nor would i consider my vehicle to have been exposed to excessive salt from roadways.
Abs engaged making it impossible to stop and causing me to run over parking lot stop curb and almost down into a lake. My grandma chevrolet and they said it had been fixed in 2008 under a recall and as such wouldn't fix it again even though it is the same problem supposedly fixed.
Lucky i was sitting at a wendy's pickup window when i felt a pop and my brake pedal went to the floor.checked and found that 2 of my brake lines had pin holes leaking brake fluid. All brake lines are rusted along with gas line (from master cyl to abs block and back) it is sitting at a chevy dealer in va beach because they said cost over 3000 to fix or total it, glad it happened when i was really driving like on the way home to pa after vac.
While driving i lost brake pedal.all the lines had some type of defect in the steel lines causing a failure and loss of brake fluid.i suggest to make it mandatory to have only stainless steel brake lines on all vehicles.
The brake pedal has been soft for quite a while. During a pa.state safetyinsp. It was discovered by inspection mechanic that the brake lines were leaking in multiple places. He was going to replace only the affected area at first but then discovered the lines were leaking in multiple places. Therefore all the lines had to be replaced.
I was pulling into parking space and there was no brakes also happened when i was pulling out of parking lotof store .i took to gm dealer and was told that both hub bearings were loose and that is what caused me to lose all my brakes. I hit a concrete handicap sign was lucky not another car in front of me. Why would gm make a truck that would lose its brakes if a bearing was loose i am afraid to drive truck that the same thing might happen again and maybe the next time i won't be so lucky. There was no sign of anything wrong with the exception of 4 days earlier my abs light flickered on then off 1 time. Remained off after that.
Had to brake hard andsteel brake line burst. Pedal went to floor and started to move forward. Looks very rusty. Front seatbelt failed, doesn't retract.
The rear brake line on my 2001 chevt 1500 silverado rusted into. Is was not a salt corrison. Many trucks have this issue. I work in a parts store and a man came in last week with the same problem. It is know these checy trucks in this year do this. I hope u can take this serious and have gm to correct it before someone gets killed if they haven't already. I ran off the road due to it breaking and slide upon a fence. When i pushed on the brake . I had nothing no brakes at all.please help. Thank you
Coming up on a red light, i applied the brakes to slow down to a stop, when the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. Only then did the brake light come on. I put the truck in neutral, and finally coasted to a stop. Upon finding a pin hole in one line, the complete brake system failed. Once replacing the brake lines, the fuel lines was also so rusted, and they were about to fail.
Extremely rusty brake lines, rusted all the way through due to no protection from elements. Complete loss of brakes while driving on city street.
I was driving 45 mph down the road when a group of three ducks ran into the road. I applied the brakes as in an emergency and the left front brake line blew out because it was made of steel and had rusted out. The brake pedal went to the floor and i ran over the ducks. I am glad that it wasn't for a car or person that i had to make an emergency stop.
Parking brake not working on 5 speed transmission. Has rolled when parked and in gear. Has happened on multiple occasions.
Drove truck to go fishing, parked, finished fishing and went to take truck out of park an put into gear and the pedal went to the floor.popped hood to check master cylinder, no visible problem, looked under truck, seen fluod dripping.went to drivers side where fluid was dripping and seen all brake lines corroded and rusty and a bisted line.had to drive home hoping the e brake would slow my speed, it did not, so had absolutely no brakes and had to drive thru town up and down hills pumping the pedal hoping their was enough fluid left to create pressure.had to roll thru 3 stop signs and a red light, with hazards on honking to warn other drivers
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving various speeds, the abs warning light illuminated and the brakes failed to engage. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the driver and passenger side speed sensors and the electronic brake control module were defective. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 120,000.
Brake lines ruptured on rear axle due to external corrosion causing total loss of braking.steered vehicle to side of road and coasted to stop.
As i was coming down a hill toward stopped traffic i applied my brakes.the brake started to slow the truck then went all the way to the floor.to avoid the stopped car in front of me i turned toward the shoulder of the right side of the road.i was able to navigate around the car and stay between the car and a drain runoff on the shoulder.i continued on the should still trying to stop i split between a telephone pole and a tree.i finally came to a stopped about 75ft after that.i got out to check under the truck at each tire.there was no fluid.i proceeded to open the hood and check the master cylinder.it was full.i went back under the driverside door and under the door hinges on the frame the was brake fluid all over.
I took my truck from home in ct into nyc for a follow up doctor appt. And the lines blew out on the way in and we still had to get back to ct with brake failure; had to stop 3x for brake fluid, not fun lucky i made it home alive.i cannot believe gm has not recalled this problem.gm should make this a priority and put lives ahead of profits.i had brake replacement expenses of over $1300.00.i have owned more than 8 trucks (about 5 gm trucks and 3 chevy suvs from 1980 to now with my current 2001 silverado.with the exception of this vehicle (silverado), never had a problem the lines rusting out.
All the steel brake lines are rusted to the point of failure. Everything else on the truck is relatively rust free, but the steel brakes lines are rotted out and i don't have safe brakes to stop anymore. Brake pedal goes to floor when a line is ruptured and can't stop. None of my other vehicles that are driven in similar conditions show this much corrosion on the brake lines as this truck does. There is no corrosion protection on these brake lines at all.. I have a bad back and it would be very difficult to replace the lines myself, and i can't afford to pay a shop to do it right now, so i'm pretty much parking it for now..
As i was leaving my driveway, when i braked, my truck would not stop, made a loud sound, but after pumping the brake, it finally stopped.i had new brakes, plus rotors and calibers put on truck before all of this happened, i figured they did something wrong, but took it back to goodyear and they assured me the brakes were ok, and that it is the abs.i almost broadsided another vehicle.i noticed that there is a recall on these in certain states, but my state is not listed in the recall.i can't understand this because if my abs fails, they should include all the states in the recall, as mine evidently needs replaced.i would like to know why this is, please, because i think that it is an expensive fix and i think gm should replace it.i am afraid to drive my truck now and need to resolve this complaint as i do need to get back to driving it.tks
Evaporated system.
Metal brake line failure due to corrosion with massive loss of fluid.experienced loss of brakes at low speed, and used the emergency brake to stop.had line replaced.in august 2012 i experience a second failure, again due to metal brake line corrosion but on different line, again with massive loss of fluid and loss of brakes, luckily at low speed again.if this had happened at high speed or with a less experienced driver, it could have resulted in serious property damage and injury or fatality.this truck is located in va and other than the brake lines has little underside corrosion.i am having to replace all the brake lines at high cost to ensure safety.these brake line failures are noted all over the internet on late 90's to early 2000's chevy trucks- they seem to be very common.i have vehicles that are decades old and have their original brake lines. I suspect defective brake line materials on the truck.
Abs brakes do not stop vehicle at stop signs or intersections, have to put vehicle in park to stop! multiple times, unplugged abs sensor to drive with conventional brakes.
Steel brake line from front to rear before rear splitter rusted through and caused a major leak while towing a trailer down a hill. Trailer was empty at the time since i had just emptied it. Fortunately icould down shift into 1st and run the vehicle onto the berm and side of the road swerving to bleed off speed until i could get to the bottom of the hill and then turn into soft dirt to stop the vehicle. There was no warning, and the peddle went right to the floor, no braking at all. Tried to pump brakes, but went right to floor in less than a second. The steel line completely separated.
The brakes went out - not totally out i but had to push the breaks all the way to the floor to get the car to slowly stop. I had very little stopping power. Shortly thereafter (3- 4 minutes later ) the instrument break warning light came on. Had i been going any faster i would have surely been in a serious accident. The car was towed to a chevrolet dealer. They discovered a leaking break line. They indicated that it was a result of excesssive rust in the break line. The warning light should have come on much sooner and the break line should not have rusted through. $3,000 later, it was fixed.
Gm recalled this vehicle in 2006 due to corrosion of front abs speed sensor (chevy recall #05068c: product safety - front wheel speed sensor corrosion).my abs are pulsing at very low speed - stop signs/lights/parking etc.this is characteristic of the corrosion issue.i've been told i had the repair (i don't doubt it - there were two - one for rear parking brake and one i didn't really research - i just took it in - i assume that was this issue - sensor corrosion).i know the vehicle is 13 years old. However, i'm the original owner, and it has only 87,000 miles.it was always garage kept.it lived in wi for its first 11 years, and now resides on the southern or coast.my question:once an oem makes a safety repair under recall, is there an obligation that it solves the problem?or is it the usual 1 year parts and labor thing?thanks!
Brake pedal went to floor as i was backing out of the driveway. Upon inspection discovered brake line was rusted and had a hole.
Premature brake line failure of brake line from abs unit to rear end caused vehicle brake pedal to go to floor. Vehicle was stopped by using emergency brake. 1 line failed and caused complete hydraulic brake loss.
All brake lines are rusted and will need to be replaced.we just purchased then truck used.my mechanic inspected the truck.for a noise in the steering, thats when he discovered the rusted brake lineshe informed me that it could blow a line and anytime due to the rusted lines.he recommended replacing all of the lines.
My truck has an automatic transmission and, since i purchasing it new in july, 2001, i rarely use the parking brake.a few months after purchase, when parking on a hill,i first noticed that the parking brake did not work however, as i rarely used it i continued to rely on the transmission's "park" setting to keep the truck in place until long after the guarantee had expired.when i then looked into the possibility of whether there had been a recall on this issue i found that there had but it was only for cars with a standard transmission so i decided to continue living with this fault.now, as i learn more and more about the tendency of the brake lines on this vehicle to rust through and fail it occurs to me that this is, in fact, an emergency brake as well as a parking brake.my truck now has 59,923 miles.i believe it, and others like it, should have been recalled years ago along with those standard transmission models.i would hope that this complaint would help further that action.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving 40 mph, he depressed the brake pedal and it abnormally traveled to the floorboard and the vehicle failed to decelerate or stop. The contact avoided traffic by maneuvering to the shoulder of the highway and applying the emergency brake. The contact inspected the vehicle and found that the brake lines suffered from severe corrosion and had begun to leak. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 149,000.
Vehicle was driving/braking fine in/around town and on highway.noticed that it was becoming harder to get truck to stop as brake pedal was gradually getting closer to floor before brakes would start slowing truck down. Stopped at restaurant to eat, when i came back out to leave, the brake pedal went all the way to the floor.had truck towed to a mechanic i trust.he informed me that this was a known problem for this model and year vehicle.he also said that all of the brake lines were corroded and that one had ruptured (it was spraying a mist when the pedal was pushed).he repaired the ruptured line, topped off the fluid, and bled the brakes, brakes work again, but i'm concerned that the other corroded lines may rupture when i need the brakes the most.cost of this repair instance was $387.dealer quote to replace all the lines was $1500.mechanic said that the lines all run very close to each other and in some instances rub against each other.mechanic said that chevrolet offers a "kit" containing all of the lines except for the two lines to the rear wheels.the lines in this kit are epoxy-coated to prevent future corrosion.however, due to tight quarters and close proximity to the other brake lines, replacement of all of these brake lines is very difficult.this vehicle is located in virginia, which was not one of the salt states indicated in a now-closed recall (ea-11-001).
The brake's lost pressure and ended up rear ending the car in front of me. After further examination all the brakes lines are completely rusted and and one of the lines gave out completely which lead to the loss of pressure and cause of wreck.
Below 5 mph anti-lock brakes activate, brake pedal becomes pressurized, and truck does not stop and continues to rollunless you press on the pedal extremely hard. There is no check engine light or brake light illuminated. I brought this vehicle to the repair shop. They assume it is a sensor in the wheel hub. And without a light or code they cannot diagnose and fix this problem. My wife and kids are regular occupants in this vehicle and we frequently drive in school areas and feel this is a extreme safety hazard for the occupants and pedestrians and other vehicles around us. I contacted gm but they refuse to admit that this problem exist. I had the same problem with my 1999 chevrolet 1500pickup truck. I argued my point if this system fails it should fail so the brake system continues to work!
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving approximately 35 mph with the brake pedal engaged, the brake pedal had to be depressed to the floor and an extended braking distance was required to stop the vehicle. The contact also had to apply the parking brake. While inspecting the vehicle, the contact discovered that brake fluid was leaking from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the brake fluid leak was due to corrosion of the brake lines. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 104,000.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that the abs module and brake line were rusted. The contact was a mechanic and repaired the brake line himself. The contact called mccarthy chevrolet lee's summit (945 se oldham pkwy, lee's summit, mo 64081, (816) 356-6610) and they confirmed that there were no recalls. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 250,000.
I was driving back home from work one day, then in front of me was a yellow light about to turn red. I was far away so i didint bother to speed up and i was only going 45 mph. Then i slightly press the brakes and the brake pedal sinks all the way down to the floor. I stopped and got out to look and i find out that my brake line was leaking.
Brake line failure under drivers side cab.while my wife was driving home the brake pedal went to the floor. Had it towed to firestone and they are currently doing 1841.00 worth of brake repairs. All 5 lines at the abs pump i was told are completely rotted through requiring 7hrs of labor. In the rack next to me is a newer approx 04 suburban exact same failure. Met a gentleman in the lobby with an 03 - 2500 exact failure, the mechanic working on the vehicle has the same as me and just completed the exact same repair. And a friend at work with an 01 just took a week doing all the lines on his. Exact same repair. Please do something before some one does get killed. 10 seconds earlier and my wife would have driven this 6000+lb truck into someone in front of her at 40 mph into the busiest intersection of town.
I live in a section of town where there are numerous, steep hills. On the way home, i began braking to keep below the 35mph speed limit, and the brakes went way further down than normal, but the truck slowed down. Since i was very close to home, i kept going on my way very slowly. I downshifted all the way down to first gear the next time i needed to brake (at my house), this time the brake went all the way to the floor and finally stopped when i was standing on the brake pedal with both feet.upon looking under the rear of the car, i discovered the rusty brake line that had ruptured, and several other brake lines and fuel lines that were very rusty as well. Truck remains parked for now, to replace the broken line, (the one that runs from the abs/proportioner to the rear brakes) and the other rusty brake lines as well as the rusty fuel lines.
I left my parking and the brake light came on in the dash. I noticed a very spongy feel so pulled over and found that half of my fluid was missing. I inspected under the vehicle and noticed that all the brake lines were extremely corroded, even in the engine compartment. Based on this inspection, despite not being able to find a "smoking gun" leak, it is very apparent that the corroded brake lines are the cause of the leak. Fortunately, i was able to pull over with brake fluid still left in the system. It is ridiculous that such a critical safety item (brakes) should have a corrosion problem to the degree that this does.
Coming back from store ,went to turn in driveway to house no brakes ran off in grass and creek.front and back brakes both leaking and rusted bad.had this truck since 07 and taken care of .can not afford to pay what shop wants to fix. Gm needs recall trucks with this problem before someone gets bad hurt or killed.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving 55 mph, the abs engaged independently without warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 200,000.
Brake lines rusted out and burst leaving us with no brakes and unable to stop. Almost in a collision, and left us stranded. Two times this happened with two different brake lines bursting at low speed. Luckily we weren't going fast.
I was stopped at the mailbox reaching out for the mail when the brake peddle went to the floor and the truck rolled forward about a foot. I was able to slowly get up the driveway and found the brake lines had rusted through. Had to replace all the lines.
I was stopped at a traffic light with my foot on brake and had to reach into passenger seat which resulted in me applying a little more pressure onto my brake pedal. My brake pedal went to floor board and i knew something was very wrong. I proceeded to go straight home and noticed much longer stopping distances. I checked under my vehicle the next day and saw that my brake line was completely rusted through.
Abs activates sporadically when braking at low speeds, both in forward and backward motion.this increases stopping distance dramatically.previous recalls were issued in 2006 (clean sensors) and 2009 (replace sensors).apparently this is a know safety issue!local dealer refuses to address this without charge and refers me to gm.
The steel brake lines corroded and broke causing brakes to fail.
Owned the vehicle since new. Vehicle now has approximately 81,000 miles. Each time the brakes needed replacement the rotors needed to be replaced due to "excessive pitting and corrosion" this was done twice during the years owned. During the most recent brake service i was informed and shown that the brake lines were so badly corroded as to be a hazard and that they could fail at any moment. I believe this is due to inferior materials being incorporated into the vehicle at the time of manufacture. A recall should be issued as the dangers of sudden unexpected brake failure are significant.
The rear brake line busted when brakes were depressed in driveway and appears as though all brake lines are severely corroded. Ohio.
While driving down a two lane highway, the vehicle in front of me applied his brakes for a disabled vehicle in the roadway. I began to press mine when they went straight to the floorboard. I began to pump the brakes quickly hoping the system would send fluid to the other set which it did not. In order to prevent impacting the vehicle in front of me or the disabled vehicle, i had to send the vehicle across oncoming traffic, launch over a roadside ditch and come to a stop in a corn field. The failure was a pinhole blowout under the drivers side door where the brake were completely rusted through.
Unwanted abs activation causing increased stopping distance during low speed brake applications. This is dangerous and will cause an accident when the brakes fail to stop the vehicle.
I brought my 2001 chevrolet to get new brakes on the rear.after the tech installed them he took the truck for a test run.he said that the brake pedal went to the floor and he didn't have brakes.he stated that the brake line had rusted through.he said that all 4 needed to be replaced. He said that these gm pick-ups are known to have this problem. We walked out with a huge bill.luckily they didn't fail while i was driving 70 mph or while towing our camper!
When driving to work, went to stop brake pedal went to floor with no warning.found out brake lines rotted and leaked.could not buy had to have brake lines made and installed by mechanic.the more people i've talk to chevy should be responsible for the brake lines. I almost hit another car . Went into ditch to avoid the car. The truck is kept very clean and never taken off road.purchased the truck brand new.
While driving my truck on highway 70, the traffic slowed, i attempted to slow down, but my brake pedal went to the floor (rusted brake lines ruptured causing total brake failure) and i was unable to stop.i whipped the steering wheel to the left to avoid rear ending up coming cars.i managed to slow the truck down by pulling down to 1st and was able to get to an off ramp, but was unable to stop, before hitting another car and a sign pole. I have owned many cars that had far more miles than my truck and were not taken care of like this truck. Never have i had a total brake failure on any other car.this should not ever happen, no matter where you live, snow removal methods, etc.i was lucky, i could have killed or seriously injured someone.i would bet there has already been many fatal accidents due to these poor brake line being installed on trucks.
Driving down hill light turned yellow, went to apply brakes peddle held for a second then went to the floor.luckily no one was waiting to come through intersection, upon inspection found brake lines had rusted through. Complete brake failure.
While slowing to turn into service station brake pedal went to floor without any warning.brake line had ruptured just below drivers door.
Metal brake line rusted out.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. While the vehicle was stationary, it was discovered that the frame was severely rusted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 75,000.updated 12/20/16*lj the consumer stated there were also problems with the brakes.
I was changing the oil on my 2001 silverado 1500 ls which has about 115,000 miles in my driveway. While i was under the car, i noticed that the brake lines (around the abs unit) along side the frame rails on the driver side is badly corroded. I may well have to change the lines asap as it is hazard to drive the vehicle on the road. It may well be fatal for me or for anyone else on the road in case the brake lines burst when i apply the brake.did not expect this from gm. I have taken very good care of the truck so far and this is what i get back - glaring issues which can get anyone injured seriously/killed. Please do something about this and get gm to fix this for all affected consumers before a wake up call in the form of a fatal accident.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving various speeds over bumps in the road, the brakes slipped and the pedal was stiff. The vehicle would not respond and the emergency brake was engaged to stop the vehicle. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact called paramus chevrolet (94 nj-17, paramus, nj 07652, (201) 261-7100) and informed them of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. The failure mileage was 60,000.
Upon slowing down near my house the brake pedal almost traveled to the floor.i was able to pull into the driveway without hitting anything and i used my emergency brake to hold the truck in place while i placed the truck in park. I pumped the brake pedal and fluid was pouring out of one of the brake lines.the brake lines are severely rusted out as were the fuel lines i had replaced in the past.
2nd owner of 2001 chevy silv 1500 - badly rusting undercarriage, rusted fuel tank hanger, rusted body/bed mounts, rusted off brake lines (had to be replaced $2k).gm should perform recall for late model gm trucks 1999 thru 2005 for rust problems and replace all brake lines/fitting, etc. With stainless steel lines.
At speeds lower than 5 mph, abs braking system engages on dry or wet pavement resulting in failure to stop the vehicle. Example - pulling into a parking spot the vehicle would not stop and resulted in bumping into next vehicle. Also at a stop sign/lighted intersection, the vehicle would not stop resulting in vehicle going into the intersection and oncoming traffic.
Brake line failure due to massive, system wide, corrosion. All lines show evidence of deterioration. This is not normal. While driving, pedal went to floor during a normal, in town stop. Was able to stop before rear ending another car.
Started to leave driveway and brake pedal went to floor with no control. Managed to coast to stop and pushed truck back to garage.
While driving at slow speeds and coming to a stop my abs system will activate on dry pavement. This happens at every stop i make. This causes increase stopping distance and creates a large safety risk.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that while trying to decelerate, the brake pedal was abnormally depressed to the floorboard. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was confirmed that the brake lines were severely rusted. The brake lines were repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 60,000.updated 01/29/13*lj updated 01/30/20130
While depressing the brakes to go from park to reverse, the brake pedal suddenly sank to the floor.after towing the vehicle to a gm dealership, i learned that it was a brake line failure which was due to a rupture in the corroded steel brake lines.i was told that this was a common problem with this model year truck.the ruptured line was replaced with a non-corrosive copper/nickel line.fortunately i was parked at the time of this failure or this could have easily caused a severe accident.i question why gm would use corrosive steel for a life-safety component of the vehicle and has not addressed this issue either through recall or safety bulletin.
Started truck, went to put in gear and brake pedal went clear to floor.looked under truck and had a puddle of brake fluid approximately under the front of the driver's door.upon inspection, the line that went from the abs module up to the right front brake had ruptured (small pin hole).all the brake lines on the truck are about rusted through.this rupture left me with no brakes on the truck. Luckily it happened in a parking lot while putting in gear instead of while trying to brake on the roads.
When the parking break is pressed down the truck is drivable.
After returning to the truck from an errand i started the engine and, upon depressing the brake pedal in order to put the vehicle in gear, the brake pedal went to the floor. No warning lamps of any sort were illuminated prior to the brake pedal going to the floor. Pumping of the pedal did not produce any resistance. After a few minutes the brake fluid level warning lamp came on. Brake fluid was added but did not result in any resistance from the pedal. Had to have the truck towed home where it then sat over-night.i observed a large wet spot on the driveway just below the driver?s side door. I looked underneath and saw that all of the brake lines going into or out of the abs module were severely corroded and at least one had obviously been leaking brake fluid.the truck was towed to a chevrolet dealer. I arrived as they were raising the truck on a lift. Evidently they also added some brake fluid because quite a large puddle was forming on the shop floor below where the brake lines enter the abs module. The technician, the service consultant, and i all observed the rusted brake lines, and fluid was literally dripping from one that had obviously burst. The dealer advised that gm does not make replacement steel brake lines so all the lines would need to be hand fabricated by the technician. Dealer also advised that the abs module may have to be replaced because of how corroded the brake line fittings are (fittings are steel, abs module is aluminum) where they screw into the module. We also observed that the fuel lines were severely corroded.i have owned many vehicles far older and with far more mileage and have never had to replace the steel brake lines. I believe the design is flawed (the routing and placement of lines and module) or the brake line material (steel, instead of stainless steel) is insufficient.
I have had problems with abs brakes, first the right front bearing hub wear and tire vibration, then the abs and brake lights came on, will stay on then extinguish and come again and stay on, abs does not work.
At about 55,900 miles, the abs on my pickup truck began comming on at about 5 to 8 mph when braking on dry pavement. This increased stopping distance when braking and led to my wife crashing into a steel pole barrier in a parking lot and destroying the front bumper.
The brakes on the t ruck are not right. They work okay but when you are going about 5 miles per hour and hit the brake, the abs comes on makes a grating noise that you can both feel and hear. I have had everything checked and this is what is the problem. When this problem occurs it takes longer to stop than normal. The noisie is also kind of scary. I have had to put new rotors on the f ront of the t ruck and both rotors and pads on the back. All of them were rusted and pitted. The truck only has about 26,000 miles on it and it doesn't gethard use.
Upon taking my truck to get inspected, i was informed the emergency brake was completely shot. I took the trcuk to the dealer to get it replaced and was then told that all four brakes were gone (down to the rotors). The truck only has 42,000 miles and was not driven that hard since purchased.
I have a 2001 chevy silverado.at about 70,000 miles (2.5 yrs ago) both the emergency brake and the abs dash lights became to come on simultaneously.i have in the past few years made several brake pad replacements and replaced the emergency brake.i have also spoken with several retail automotive centers and received no positive resolution.still the lights continue to come on.it wasn't until today that i learned about the electronic brake control module.to think that i had been driving with out abs for almost 3 years now.upon trying to obtain some information on the product and the problem, i was shocked and angry to find so many forums and sites where this same problem is happening to so many other people.it appears that this is wide spread problem with no easy solution.from a dealer the cost of repair is around $1500.i have done a lot of my own work on my truck, and am frustrated that a small electrical component will in the end cost me the greatest amount of money and frustration.such an intregal component, with a very important purpose (brakes), should have a longer operating life or be made more available and affordable for replacement.at least it should be covered by a warranty.
I first received recall notice for abs brake system on 2001 chevrolet silverado in 2005.immediately took vehicle to dealership on 11/1/05 and had brakes "fixed", which was simply cleaning the abs speed sensor.mileage was 61,911.then on 9/11/09 my wife was pulling into a parking space at our supermarket at low speed (3-4 miles per hour).brakes failed and truck continued forward and struck the front of a parked vehicle, which in turn was pushed backward hitting a woman putting groceries in her trunk.the woman was knocked to the ground and may have been injured.took truck to the dealership immediately and they again "fixed" brakes.this time it was at my expense of $447.mileage was 100,670.gm has not sufficiently addressed this recall campaign.first, the recall "fix" was actually just a band-aid to temporarily resolve the problem and not a root-cause solution.there was no service bulletin or communication to owners that this service needed to be done again every few years (at owners expense) or the brake failure at low speed issue would return again.
Brakes failed due to loss of brake fluid caused by rusted out brake line from abs unit.
My wife was driving the vehicle and when she went to stop, the brake pedal went completely to the floor with virtually no stopping ability. She was able to get the truck to a parking lot safely. When i arrived to inspect the vehicle there was a huge puddle of brake fluid under the truck at the area under the drivers feet. Upon inspecting the failure i noticed that all of the steel brake lines at the point where the cross the frame to the abs control module were massively rusted to the point where the fluid was purging out of at least one of the lines. Upon testing the brakes myself there was absolutely no stopping ability due to complete loss of all brake fluid and air that had now entered the system. After reviewing this issue on the internet i realized that i am not the only gm owner having this exact same issue. Luckily, it did not result in a crash and injuries or death. Had this happened 2 weeks earlier while is was towing my 30 foot jayco camper, the outcome would have had an entirely different outcome. Something needs to be done to recall these vehicles before someone gets killed. There also needs to be reimbursement for the thousands of dollars that it is going to cost to have this fixed. In thirty years of driving, i have owned only chevrolet's. This will probably change in a year or two when i replace this vehicle and probably go to a foreign manufacturer, may life may depend on it! to reiterate, the brakes lines are rusting along the frame rail under the area of the driver's feet to the point where they fail and all of the brake fluid is purged. There had been absolutely no indication (ie: seeping, leaking, or dripping) prior to the complete and rather instant failure. I have taken digital pictures for future proof.
Upon stepping on brake at low speed to stop, it felt as though abs took over and caused truck to lose braking power.almost crashed into fence.than second time less than one hour later had same thing happen pulling into driveway. Third time a day latter pulling into drive abs felt again and brake not engaging.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado k1500. While driving approximately 10 mph, the braking system failed without warning causing the contact to use the emergency brakes to avoid an accident. The dealer was contacted and stated that the wheel bearings needed to be replaced.the manufacturer was notified and offered no assistance.the vehicle was not repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 94,000.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500.he stated that the parking brake does not work.the dealer inspected the vehicle and determined there was a malfunction with the parking brake.the dealer stated that the vehicle was not included as part of a recall.the failure and current mileages were 56,000.the vin was unavailable.
Had a complete failure of the braking system when pulling into a convenience store. Pedal went to the floor and brake light came on, but appeared to have a small amount of residual braking on front wheels. Upon inspection the left rear brake line had rusted through. Went straight to garage for repair and was told that all brake lines were in danger of rusting through in several spots. Also entire undercarriage is badly rusted as to rotors, shocks and such. Actually had all rotors replaced about three years ago at chevrolet dealer in order for truck to pass the state inspection. Have other vehicles even older than this truck with no apparent problems with rust under them. Was told by garage mechanic that he has seen a very large number of chevy trucks of this vintage with same problems. It's a shame, because this truck looks almost new in every other aspect.
Anti-lock brakes engage as vehicle comes to a stop.vehicle ends up 2-5 feet further than desired stopping location.hubs, have been replaced, rotors have been replaced 4 times with only 61k miles on vehicle that is garage kept.nothing has fixed problem.vehicle is dangerous to drive.
Abs activates at low speed, 5-10mph, on dry pavement.this extends the stopping distance.happens more than 50% of the time when stopping.same condition as described in campaign number 05v379000.
I believe my vehicle has suffered same exact problems outlined in nhtsa action number: pe05020 and recall campaign number: 05v379000. When trying to stop in parking lot or parking garage the abs would activate at very low speeds and my vehicle would not stop. I would run into cement while chocks or blocks that are designed to stop a car in parking lots. This has happened 5-10 times in my vehicle. It has not happened in the past year but i believe this is because the abs has been deactivated by vehicle. Last month i had to slam on brakes and they locked up and my truck skidded out of control, had to release brakes to regain control. Luckily no accidents yet.
Sudden loss of brakes on 2001 chevy silverado 1500. All brake lines were badly rusted, fluid was leaking from a group of lines to the hcu. Removed all rusted brake lines and brake components. Replaced 5 brake lines, caliper, brake hose, & fluid. Cost = $ 1369.21.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500.in 2005, the antilock braking system would engage while driving 20 mph.this also increased the stopping distance of the vehicle, which eventually led to a minor crash.a police report was filed.the contact took the vehicle to a repair shop.body work was performed, but no repairs were made to the braking system.after the crash, the contact began to notice that the abs would randomly engage while driving at low speeds.approximately one month later, he received a recall notice relating to the abs.he took the vehicle to a dealer and they stated that it could not be repaired because it was a product liability.they further stated that a gm representative needed to inspect the vehicle prior to it being repaired.the contact took the vehicle to a different gm dealer and they repaired the vehicle.approximately six or seven months later, the abs failure recurred.he took the vehicle back to the dealer and was informed that an entirely new braking system was needed.the dealer replaced the rotors and shocks; however, the failure has begun to recur a year and a half later.the abs is currently engaging again and almost causes rear end crashes.the contact believes that a secondary recall needs to be issued to properly repair this defect.the nhtsa campaign id number was unknown.the failure mileage was 50,000 and current mileage was 71,000.
My brake lines are corroded and this is a known issue.i fear this is a safety issue and should be recalled by gm.
I have a 2001 chevrolet silverado, and the anti-lock brakes come on almost all the time when i am braking at about 5 mph.there is a recall for this problem, but chevrolet says my vin number is not included in the recall.the recall is just for certain states, indiana (where i live) being one of them.chevrolet does not want to fix the problem because my vin number is not one that is covered under the recall.i have read several other complaints about the same thing, so there must be some kind of defect.my truck started having the problem at about 99,000 miles.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado. The contact was traveling 35 mph when he had to abruptly apply the brakes to avoid crashing into a vehicle that drove into his lane. There was an unusual increase in stopping distance and time. The contact inspected the vehicle and discovered that the brake lines from the master cylinder to the abs unit and from the abs unit to the front brakes were corroded. The failure mileage and current mileage was 115,000.
When starting my vehicle i had my foot on the brake, in short order the pedal went to the floor.i tried pumping the pedal but the soft pedal feel did not subside and the pedal would still go to the floor.i then got out and checked under the vehicle and found brake fluid pouring out of a ruptured line.a pin hole sized rupture is at the driver rear axle near where the hard line connects to the flex rubber line.i feel that it is relevant that though this vehicle is now in a southern state, the first five years of its existence was in a salt-belt state.
Rusted through steel brake lines failed today as i was braking the lines ruptured and i lost brakes. At frame mount location at rear left wheel and also at proportioning abs block on frame rail below drivers seat nothing done to repair yet sitting in my driveway after being towed home.
In my 2001 chevy silver auto, every time i come to a stop at a stop signi am experiencing unwanted anti-lock brake system application.this happens every time i stop and happens at low speeds only. I have found there was a recall on this same issue ( nhtsa campaign # 05v379000).this however does not include my vehicle but it needs to !!
Rusting fuel line caused a significant fuel leak in the rear of the vehicle near the fuel tank, while repairing that line i observed several other rusting lines in that area brake, and more fuel lines.
The anti-lock braking system just started activating when i am traveling at low speeds. It occurs every single time i try to stop! have not gotten to get it fixed yet just started last night when it made me run into my own garage wrecking my garage!!
Brake failure.
I was driving down the hwy and my brakes went completely out. No warning light that is a lie and so is the statement about it slowly coming to a stop. Luckily i was going up a hill so it came to a stop then started rolling backwards into on coming traffic and i had to go off the road and hit a pole and broke my tailgate off cause the tailgate pins were rusted to and i live in alabama. No salt anywhere. Thanks chevy, now i can't even fix the truck because its going to cost me 1,000 dollars.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that the front and rear brakes were rusted from the brake line to the abs control unit. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic for repairs or diagnosis. The failure mileage was 157,000 and the current mileage was 158,000.
Wheel speed sensors replaced under recall failed again failing to stop vehicle in safe distance under 10 mph.had to replace both wheel speed sensors again.was told brake lines also corroded.have found that a common complaint on chevy silverado.
Speed wheel sensor failure, gm do not want to be responsible for the safety recall, they gave me acase number, and told me because i was the second owner warranty does not cover to fix the problem.
Brake lines failed on my 2001 chevy silverado. My son was driving, but was able to stop ok with the brake pedal to the floor. I had to have all the brake lines replaced as they were rusted too badly to repair. This cost me a lot of money and thankfully no one was injured.
Brake lines on my 2001 chevrolet silverado have deteriorated to the point where the brake lines will not pass the yearly vehicle inspection.the corrosion rate of these brake lines are significantly greater than should be expected for the age of the vehicle.i would like have this instance added to the ongoing investigation into this safety issue.
2001 chevy silverado 1500 pickup abs control module failure at 85,000 miles. Abs light illuminates along with brake light while driving.vehicle has no or intermittent abs brakes . Pump continues to run after vehicle shutdown. At slow speeds vehicle may not stop. Gm dealer acknowledges problem exist but says gm does not warranty the part and no recall exist.
Brake line corroded at abs unit along frame.
2001 chevy silverado.odometer 56k.3/20/10 total brake failure.brakes, calipers, front to rear brake lines replaced.rusted lines.7/24/10 four months after, repeated brake failure.totally blew rear brakes.currently at dealership for service.avoided a collision.expensive, and potentially dangerous.needs a safety recall on this defect.
Loss of brakes due to brake line corrosion, rust out.a deer ran into the highway, hit brakes to stop and brake pedal went to floor.hit deer and did major damage to front of truck. After inspection, all brake lines need replaced.unsafe to drive.this can cause a major accident, injury or even death.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph or less, he noticed that the abs would activate and increase stopping distance and time when braking. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer nor repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 155,150. The vin was not available.
Experienced brake failure due to corroded brake lines form the master cylinder to abs unit. The brakes failed whileattempting to stop at red light on a major highway, causing the truck to enter the intersection. Both main lines blew causing total brake failure. Any vehicle in the north east region (usa)should come stock with stainless steel brake lines, as to prevent such premature corrosion.
Nhtsa recall campaign number: 05086 was done on my 2001 chevy. Silverado on 11 oct. 05 at 59,952 miles. No parts were changed out.just cleaned the abs sensors.all has worked good until august 2008.i have at least 4 occurrences a week at speeds of 1 to 6 mph. This happens each time i drive the truck since 8-01-08 to today.i've been told my chevy. Dealer that this is a one time clean/fix and cannot be done again.that i could disable it and the abs light would remain on and the abs would not activate. To have them clean or repair would be at my expense because i no longer have a warranty on my truck. I have a 2001 chevy. Impala that has had the same problem with the abs and had to have both front hubs replaced at my expense.i keep my receipts in hopes that if there is a recall i can be reimbursed.i hope that with all the other complaints that you will consider another recall so this problem can be resolved. Thank you
Total brake failure due to rusted brake lines.
Hydraulic brake line rotted out causing me to loose my brakes. Happen on the highway. Almost rear end the car in front of me. Dealer says this is normal wear due salt on the roads. 2001 chevy silverado 1500.93,000 miles.
Lost brakes at a low speed due to brake line corrosion.will need to replace all other brake lines as they are heavily corroded as well.then, just today i tried to apply my parking brake and something broke.the pedal went all the way to the floor.brake cable broke and parking brakes remain on.will have to have vehicle towed for repair once again.i believe that it would be prudent to take a look at this forum as i have found that many, many people are having issues with chevrolet brakes.http://trucks.about.com/b/2011/08/01/brake-line-corrosion-suspected-in-gm-trucks.htm.
Rear disc brake pads premature wear due to failure of brake piston to retract.both rear disc brakes piston failed to retract normally.installation of new pads caused extreme heating of rotor.replaced both rear disc brake floating calipers with rebuilt units that had grease under outer piston seal to prevent rust to fix problem!
Brakes failed while driving down my driveway, and the pedal went almost to the floor. All five lines leading to the abs unit located inside the frame rail, under the drivers seat, are severely rusted and will need to be replaced. One of the lines rusted through and sprung a leak.since the lines are running along the top side of the frame rail from the master cylinder and to the front wheels, the replacement will be a difficult job. To the best of my knowledge, the manufacturer does not carry replacement lines and they must be custom bent.since the lines are typically installed on a bare frame without the chassis, the original installation is much easier than field replacement. Given the difficulty of field replacement and the consequences of brake failure, the manufacturer should use a higher quality original part.
I'm complaining about my 2001 chevrolet silverado. The wheel speed sensor malfunctions, even on dry roads, and causes loss of brakes. If the roads are slick it malfunctions constantly when trying to brake, making the vehicle undrivable. It was fixed under recall once already but happened again only a year later. This is now the 3rd wheel speed sensor issue with my vehicle. I've had to put up with it since chevrolet won't fix it at their expense even though it's an ongoing recalled safety issue. I don't understand how this extreme safety issue is allowed to continue like this!
I have a 2001 chevrolet silverado pickup with antilock braking system.the abs computer module has failed twice since i have had it.you can tell it is not working when the system continually pumps the brakes even when the engine is turned off.the module costs $800-$1000 and i cannot afford to replace it again.i called chevrolet to report the problem and took it up their chain of complaints as far as i could get anyone to listen to me.the best they would offer as a resolution was a coupon for $500 off a new pickup truck.i pulled the module to stop the continuous pumping. And my dashboard brake warning light and the abs warning lights stay on continually.my brakes still function, but the abs safety system does not aid them.i reported this problem to ntsb the first time the module failed and got no reply and this is the second module to fail on this truck.my mechanic say he does not understand why there has not been a recall because he has seen this many times on 2001 silverado.it is a safety concern because abs won't function without the module working properly.
As i approached a stop sign in my 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500, i applied pressure to the brake pedal only to have it go all the way to floor.thankfully i was not going fast, and there was enough pressure remaining in the brake line to slow me down (had i been going faster than 5 mph, i don't know that would have been the case).after being towed to the dealer, the inspection showed that the brake line had rusted through; this caused the brakes to fail.the vehicle had its most recent maintenance done less than a month and 20 miles prior and no issues were found.i followed up with further review of my own on the internet to find that this is a problem, especially in the rust belt states where salt is used each winter.i am glad that i was able to stop, and am grateful that i was not on a busy road going at a higher speed.i cannot imagine why such a vital piece of equipment on any vehicle would be made of a material that could not withstand the elements better.in addition, i would have thought that such a flaw would have prompted a safety recall before anyone does get hurt.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph and decelerating, the brake pedal went to the floor board causing an increase in stopping distance and time. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who informed the contact that the brake line was rusted and leaking brake fluid. The dealer advised that the brake lines would need to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 46,900.
Sudden and near total lose of brakes.the chevrolet dealer reported that the brake lines had rusted out and ruptured.all brake lines had to be replaced.if this had occurred at highway speeds in an emergency situation there could have been a very serious accident.
Front brake lines failed due to corrosion approaching a traffic light.ran off road to avoid collision.approximately 2 years later, rear brake lines failed due to corrosion.backing plates on rear disks have completely rusted away.all calipers and rotors have been replaced and all parking brake cables have broken due to corrosion.this truck only has 57,000 miles!
My brakes are beginning to fail when making sharp turns. Noticeable when turning into parking spaces. I hit the back of a parked vehicle this weekend because of it and now i'm afraid to drive my truck. When the sharp turn is made (in either direction) the abs kicks in and the pedal begins to vibrate then goes to the floor. The vehicle is a 2001 chevy silverado 1500, 4 wheel drive. On 6/21/2011 i called chevrolet to report this problem and ask for help and they would not because a recall had not been made. I found other recalls online stating this same kind of problem; (nhtsa recall campaign id number 05v379000) i would like for you to issue a recall as soon as possible so i can be reimbursed for the repairs i am going to have to make right now to make my vehicle safe to drive.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact was driving approximately 15 to 20 mph and depressing the brakes when the anti-lock brakes activated abnormally, causing the rear brake line to fracture. The vehicle was then towed and repaired by the owner for the front and rear hub assemblies. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The failure and current mileages were approximately 107,400. The vin was unavailable.
Driving on rt 280 in nj.traffic was merging to one lane, got cut off by merging car, hit brakes hard, pedal went to floor, was able to stop by flooring pedal, downshifting and using rumble strip.brake lines under truck are completely rusted, it appears to have failed in more than one spot.
Was pulling into garage applied brakes was running 4 mph anti lock activated peddle went to floor hit work bench knocked wall out of back of garage & damage truck $5000 total damage. Found out wheel sensor was bad replaced no more problems. Seams like something that's is suppose to help you stop should not keep you from stopping if it goes bad crappy fail safe.
Brakes on my 2001 chevy silverado have never been very good.they have degraded to the point that the vehicle can not reliably stop with reasonable braking distances.many near accidents have happened and one crash where brakes could have contributed to the accident.the brakes have been serviced with pad replacement, rotors machined/replaced brakes bled, master cylinder replaced and nothing has made the brakes function well. Please note the incident date can be looked up but this is an estimated date reported here.
Abs failure.i turned in my 01 1500 silverado (94k miles)back in 07 for the initial brake recall.the dealership cleaned the sensor and i haven't had a problem till march 2010.the abs is none stop now,it was not a gradual growing problem my brakes just stopped working.if im going about 10-20mph and do not slam on the brakes the abs sets off and the truck just slides till i pump the brakes and get vehicle to stop.i have used a few cans of brake cleaner on the front brakes and it seems to work for a week or two but there needs to be a permanent solution.
The front wheel hubs on my 2001 silverado had to be replaced due to abs sensors not working properly at low brake speeds. I understand chevy issued a recall concerning this problem, i never recieved any notice of this problem or any other recall notices. It cost me $744,99 to have this work done.i feel this is a chevy defect and they should have been made to replace these abs sensors since it is a safety hazard and there problem from the orginal design. My truck is of course out of warranty at 53,256 miles.
Brake lines all rusted causing complete failure.. Rocker panels totally rottedout..
On a saturday 11/21/2009 i was driving my 201 chevrolet silverado {59,021 miles} down a dirt incline which leads to a pond.when i applied the brakes ,there wereno brakes at all, and i keep going while my foot was holding the brakes down , until my truck's front tires were in the ponds water. As i entered the water the brakes finally took hold and i stopped. It was a beautiful clear day without any ice or snow. This is the second time it has happened~ the first was about 11/2003 i was havingbrake problems {the brakes would chatter when applied}so i brought the truck to a chevrolet dealer to ck. The brakes this was on 12/01/2003. The service department called a few days later and said the mechanic had a accident with the truck, he was bring it into the garage and he had gone right through the closed garage doors because of a brake failure. The dealer at this point called general motors and reported the problem with the brakes {not stopping & going through the closed doors}damage was done and they had toreplace the bug deflector, bumper cap , front grill & repaired and painted the hood. They also replaced the ~wheel sensors ~telling us that this was the problem. We had no use of the truck for about 6wk. The truck was returned to us without charge. Were afraid to drive this truck now fearing someone will be injuredor killed because we are never sure when this brakefailure will happen again. We have called gm they made an appointment with a chevrolet dealer but they refused to pay for the diagnostic test to confirm the brake failure .
I lost the brakes on my 2001 chevy silverado, coming home from a family outing.once i was finally able to stop the truck, my husband saw all of the brake fluid leaking out.when the local chevy dealer inspected it they said all the brake lines were corroded & badly rusted that both the front & the back brake lines had to be replaced.they, of course, no longer make the brake lines for this truck so they had to be hand made.

Dt: the contactowns a 2001 chevrolet truck and was having problems with the brakes.the first timethere was an incident where he tried to stop the vehicle but could not stop.as a result the consumer's vehicle hit another vehicle.the second time the consumer was trying to stop for a stop sign but could not stop.
I applied brakes going down hill when all of a sudden the pedal went all the way to the floor causing my vehicle to be very unresponsive to braking almost causing me to crash. I was able to stop the truck after a lengthy time. I would not have been able to stop up any conditions if needed to do so if there wasn't a long area of road to gradually stop like i had. I'm really concerned because this truck was garaged most of its life and is very low mileage(45k). It has no rust on body, only on the brake lines and i believe the fuel lines.
Brake line ruptured.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado k 1500. The contact was driving 5 mph when the brake line failed. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and the current mileages were 81,220.
1. At approximately 2 pm, cst on august 10, 2010, i pulled out of my driveway and began exiting my subdivision down the one lane gravel road. I was traveling at approximately 15mph, and compressed the brakes while driving downhill. 2. After applying the breaks to reduce my speed while traveling downhill, the brake pedal completely depressed to the floor, and all function to the brakes was lost. I continued downhill with the emergency brake fully depressed, which provided some deceleration, although the vehicle remained in motion, reaching a speed of about 20mph before finally coming to rest on the one lane bridge exiting the subdivision. A visual inspection revealed that the brake lines were nearly completely corroded, and had ruptured, leaking brake fluid onto the chassis, and puddling on the gravel. 3. I have contacted chevrolet customer service, and was told the vehicle must be diagnosed at my own expense before assistance could be provided. I plan to have the vehicle diagnosed friday, august 13, 2010.
I own a 2001 silverado 1500. I have a reocurring problem with my antilock brakes. The antilock brakes engage at low speeds while trying to stop. I had this problem in 2004 and had the hub replaced on my dime. Then it happened again in 2006. There was a recall at that time and had all the speed sensors replaced per recall. Now in 2010 i'm having the same problem re-appear. I own another 2004 gm product w/ antilocks, and many friends with other year gm vehicles with no abs issues. Is this problem only with the 2001 silverado 1500?
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact was driving 5 mph when he applied the brakes and the pedal went straight into the floorboard.the emergency brake was applied and the vehicle coasted to a stop. The brakes were repaired. The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500.the vehicle was repaired according to nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock).several years later, the contact would consistently experience unwanted antilock brake system (abs) activation.the failure caused increased stopping distances during low speed brake applications, which could result in a crash.the dealer stated that because they thoroughly cleaned the wheel speed sensor mounting surface on the bearing, they would not assume responsibility for any additional repairs.as of march 12, 2009, the vehicle has not been repaired.the manufacturer did not assist.the failure mileage was 75,000 and current mileage was 109,000.
Failure of rusted or rotted brake line. Driver side rear wheel. Slow leak, detected and made repairs myself. Second failure in 2011, different location, by abs module, no warning complete failure, luckily had emergency brake, and horse trailer brakes to bring vehicle to a stop.
In 2005 a recall was issued for certain models of the chevrolet silverado 1500. This recall was directly related to the abs speed sensors. At slow speeds the abs system would activate causing extended stopping periods. This problem occurs each and every time the brakes are applied. The consequences are an unwanted increase in stopping distance which can lead to tragedy. To correct the problem dealers were instructed to remove the wheel speed sensors, clean the mounting surface, and re-install. No parts were repaired or replaced. In this case the recall process was performed at approximately 65,000 miles and the problem re-occurred at approximately 89,000 miles. General motors was contacted and unwilling to assist in any way. This problem was not fixed properly during the recall. The solution was only a temporary fix and the problem continues to re-occur endangering the safety of all motorists.
I purchased my vehicle in march of 2011 and since have noticed a significant amount of rust on all the brake lines going and coming from the abs module under the driver's side frame rail. I have read many cases of owners that have had their lines burst in as little as 2 years after purchase from the dealership. I am very concerned about the safety of operation of my truck with the brake lines corroded to the extent that they are and hope that general motors will do the right thing and fix this safety hazard. There is also a significant amount of rust on the entire underside of the vehicle (frame rails, bolt locations, weld locations, underside of bumpers, ect).
From stopped position i pulled vehicle forward aprox. 50 ft and tried to stop. I heard abs pump come on and brake pedal was hard as a rock with no pulsation. I then hit a tree causing damaged to the bumper, headlight and hood. My speed was approx 4 mph. There was no indicator light on before, during or after the accident. I had to remove main abs fuse to make vehicle safe to drive. Then i had the brake and abs indicator lights on. I contacted gm. They did an inspection. During the inspection the inspector broke my parking brake. They would not tell me the results, only that they could not verify that the abs caused the accident because i had removed the fuse. But did tell me that after the fuse was reinstalled that the abs did come on at slow speed stops and all indicators lights were off. I was denied any offer to repair thevehicle. I also do not know if my vehicle had the 2005 recall done to it.
Antilock brakes were target of recall and the required service was performed in 2005.vehicle is currently exhibiting the same conditions the recall was intended to fix, antilock brakes activating at slow speeds when not necessary.the noise produced when the antilock brakes are activates was produced at highway speeds yesterday when the brake pedal was not touched.the vehicle did not reduce speed.i am concerned about a total brake failure and have contacted chevrolet.
The owner complained about a brake problem.when applying the brakes they hardened, and the vehicle would not stop.also the ownerchanged the brake pads, rotors, and bled the brakes.currently, the vehicle still doesn't have much braking power.the problem was found to be the right front bearing and the hub sensor. *sc
On july 30th, 2011 at about22:00 hrs, i was operating my 2001 chevrolet silverado on interstate 476 in the philadelphia metro area and initially it was functioning properly.without warning a catastrophic brake line rupture occurred.i inspected the steel lines and they are all corroded to an alarming degree and must be replaced. The truck has 70,000 miles and after use during the same trip with no problems when the brake pedal sunk to the floor.to safely stop i had to down shift to a lower gear, and use the emergency brake and shift again to neutral to stop safely.
Silverado braking is soft and sometimes appears to be engage with front end transfer, that what it sounds like, it could be faulty sensor that activates the abs system. Not sure...
I was approaching a stop sign at about 45 mph i applied the brakes to slow down and there was nothing, i hit the emergency brake and realized they never worked. Luckily, i could slow down and put it in low range until it stopped. Further investigation showed a rupture in the rear brake line due to corrosion. Dealer replaced line (shabby job) at a huge cost. I feel these lines should have lasted longer that this, i noticed the lines at the front splitter are also severely corroded, i am afraid to put my grandkids in this truck. I have always owned chevy's but maybe its time for a change. All i ask is this problem be corrected.thank you.
2001 silverado 1500 4wd ext. Cab short bed. Original owner purchased new in 2001. Just so happens that i experienced my brake failure during a return trip after purchasing a used lawn tractor that i was bringing back home on my 6x10 single axle trailer. I was approaching the off ramp to my exit off of major highway traveling at approximately 60 mph. Along with other vehicles taking exit also i started to brake to go into exit and suddenly with no warning the brake pedal immediately went to the floor and i started heading to collide with the vehicle in front of me that was slowing down into the turn. I luckily was able to swerve back onto the shoulder of the highway without collision to any vehicle and then press down on emergency brake to come to a slow stop. I must mention also that i had my 9 year old son with me who was oblivious to everything going on until i explained what just happened. I had to call my wife to come so that i could unhook trailer from my truck and hook back up to her 2003 gmc yukon. After gathering myself and pondering the situation i then proceeded to drive my truck home downshifting the auto trans to slow myself and using emergency brake to come to a complete stop and sit for redlights. After getting home i crawled under truck to determine where my failure occurred and noticed a large wet spot right under the drivers side front door where all 4 brake lines run alongside the wiring harnesses. There is also a large black plastic clip at this location that holds the 4 brake lines. This area is immediately behind the front tire which in my opinion takes a large amount of splash up from the tire. I must mention that at no time did any warning light come on and has not come on yet. I had no brakes...unlike the theory that i should have had brakes on the other circuit of thebrake system. I have not fixed truck yet due to cost of repair.

While pulling into my parking area and braking, the break pedal went to the floor. A hissing sound was heard while the pedal was being pushed. Upon inspection a break in the brakeline under the driver's side cab was identified at the hanger. Based upon visual inspection their appears to be corrosion around the break in the line.
The abs sensor on both sides of my 2001 silverado went out, this causes your brakes to be soft and not stop at slow speeds. Although there is a recall on these vehicles, mine is not included. I had to pay 725 just to repair one side. Chevy knows these parts are defective and they wont do anything about it.
Brake line rupture while backing out of garage.
My wife was on an errand and when she got into the truck to come home the brake peddle was soft and went to the floor before she was able to stop.she was scared and tested the brakes and found there was some so came home slowly with a plan in her mind to hit something other than another car in the case the brakes failed completely.had this happened on the road there may have been a crash.
When driving on city streets in phoenix i will press on the brake pedal and the pedal will drop. This happens mostly when there are bumps or rough pavement. I have to quickly pump the brake pedal to get brakes bake. This has been going on since i bought the truck in 2003.

I had a recall that was supposed to of been fixed but now they are not working correctly and i almost had a major accident. I have a 2001 chevy silverado pickup and the abs sensors lock up the brakes for no reason . They say they fixed the recall awhile back which i do not believe . This is a very serious problem . I am just waiting for the lawsuits to hit gm . I almost crashed though a front glass window pane store front . If i had heart problems i would have probably had a heart attack ! this is a serious, serious problem .

I had problems with the abs brakes engaging at slow speed and when coming to a stopon my 2001 chevy silverado. In november 2004 the brakes failed to stop the vehicle (abs was engaged on dry pavement)when pulling out of a driveway onto a busy highway, resulting in a near collision with another vehicle.repairs were done at a local gm dealer and they had to replace sensors in the wheels because of corrosion, i believe as a result of defective engineering.my truck had less than 40,000 miles on it, and was driven in a normal fashion when the problem first appeared.

Antilock brakes activate without cause. This causes longer stopping distances.this was repaired with existing recall and problem is recurring.
When applying brakes pedal is soft, and then pedal goes all the way to floor. Dealership is aware of problem.
When braking on dry pavement, abs kicks in making it hard to stop. Took to chevy garage in superior, wi and they said there was a recall on the vehicle but not in the state of wisconsin or minnesota. Why?
The abs on my 2001 chevy silverado stepside (extended cab) kicks in at low speed stops.i have come close to hitting things in the past because it hinders the truck's stopping capabilities.i have complained to my dealership in the past, but no codes ever show up on the computer.for whatever reason, no info about my brake complaints was ever entered on my records.the truck has done this since the first month i had it (i bought it brand new). I finally found out that there was a recall for this problem, but not for the south.i called chevrolet and asked about the recall and was told that my truck had too many miles now to do anything about it and that the recall wasn't for my area and that since it wasn't on my service records there wasn't anything that could be done.do i have any recourse in this matter (my truck just turned 101k miles)?

Anti-lock brakes engaging at slow speeds in clear and dry weather. Would not stop in time while trying to park in a hospital parking lot . Vehicle went past intended stop in lot and just missed a pedestrian. Truck was stopped by curb. Truck was taken to local shop not under warranty. Cause of braking problem was corrosion on wheel sensors. Rear sensors where cleaned. Front left caliper and padswere damagedrequiring replacement of both front calipers( replacement in set only required)will check to see if old part is still available. Rear sensors have not been replaced.
While driving and with no warningbrakes went out. Thiscould have caused an accident. Cause unknown. Dealer notified.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 60 mph, the abs light and both brake lights illuminated.when the vehicle was shut off, there was a noise that sounded like a fan running.a private mechanic was consulted, who informed the contact that the noise was due to the abs pump running continuously, and that the abs module needed to be replaced.
While trying to come to a stop upon entering a parking spot in front of a county health bldg. The brake pedal on my truck did not respond. The pedal went hard and the truck continued forward, i applied the brake again with the same results causing the truck to strike the building and destroy a service enterance door.i estimate my speed to have been under 5 mph since the airbag did not deploy. I believe this is the result of a deffective anti-lock brake sensor. As of today i have not been to the dealer to have the failure fixed.
Anti-lock brake module is running constantly. The wheel speed sensor recall was performed on my truck a couple of years ago. I had to pull the fuse on the abs system to get the module to stop running. It was running even with the engine off and key removed!! now the abs light and brake system light are on constantly. I should not have to pay $1,000.00+ to get this fixed when so many other owners are having the same problem. I can drive the truck, the brakes are working but i am not sure that it is safe.thank you for adding this defect to your database.
Brake failures. Started happening after about 15,000 miles.
When the consumer drove over 5 mph the wheel sensor kicked in and the vehicle will not stop.the consumer had the brakes serviced.the consumer stated that the sensor in the wheel bearing was reporting bad information.all brakes where replaced and the problem still existed.*tc

When coming to a stop, the brakes on my 2001 chey silverado will suddenly stop braking at low speed.twice this week while parking, i nearly hit the vehicle in front of me.i find it paticularly bad when turning.this has been going on for the past three months, and seem to be getting worse.i have had the brakes inspected recently by a mechanic and nothing wrong was found with the pads or rotors.
Unwanted abs activation.increased unexpected stopping distances. Near collision with garage and nearhitting of pedestrian.upcoming recall applicable only to "salt belt" states.does not include wi. Nor mn.[salt not used on streets in these states?] see campaign #05v379000.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado. Whenever the contact would apply the brakes at a low speed the abs wheel sensor would activate increasing the stopping distance of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealership where the contact had the front abs wheel sensor replaced. There were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 90,000.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet pickup c1500. While driving approximately 2 mph into a parking lot the anti-lock braking system failed to operate normally. The contact had difficulty stopping the vehicle when the brakes were applied. The contact was unable to override the abs by applying extreme force to the brake pedal which caused the vehicle to drive onto a curb. The contact was forced to shut the engine off to reset the anti-lock braking system. The failure occurred on two occasions prior to being diagnosed by the dealer. The dealer determined that the wheel speed sensor was corroded and charged him $200 to clean it; however, the failure could recur if the wheel sensors become corroded. The vehicle is currently operating normally. The first failure occurred on october 17th and 18th of 2009. The failure mileage was 68,000 and the current mileage was approximately 69,000.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500.while driving between 5-10 mph with the brake pedal depressed, the vehicle did not stop.the speed sensors have been cleaned two or three times.on june 4, 2008, the brake sensors were replaced at the cost of more than $500.nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock) was referenced.the current mileage was 67,000 and failure mileage was 65,362. There was a recall on august 29 2005 for this problem. Recall number 36327i have this problem with my truck right now how should i handle this situation? it is the hydraulic: abs sensor (the problem started slowly and now its bad) i just found out about the recall.
I have a 2001 silverado. My anti-lock brakes are coming on at slow speeds, making it sometimes very hard to stop. Yesterday when pulling into my work parking space i could not stop and jumped the curb. If there were someone walking on the sidewalk they would have been hit.

At the end of september 2008 i lost the use of my brakes on my 2001 chevrolet silverado. Fortunately it happened in my driveway. I noticed a puddle of fluid on the driveway under the driver side door, upon inspection the brake line was all rusted and full of holes. I had to have the truck towed and the brake lines replaced to the tune of $600.21 on october 1. I saw in today's newspaper an investigation was being conducted into this problem. You can add me to this list.
About a week before the steering got hard steering the instrumental lites came onwhen i was driving, then went off three different times, then i was backing up and turning fairly sharpto the right when the motor died.i started the engine back up and my steering was hard to steer.also every time i turned to the right the tire sound like the tire rub on something but i never seen any rub marks any where.i do think that if i was driving down the street this could have been a very serious situation.i have checked and seen where alot of 2001 chevy suburbans has had this problem and i believe this is something that chevy should definetly recall and check no matter how many miles.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact stated there was a clunking noise in the steering wheel when making any turns. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 192,000.
Autoride suspension, not working. Harsh ride without shock dampering. Front passenger seatbelt frequently locks up and will not extend enough to secure a person. Seat belt often locks up when passenger is belted in and passenger cannot move.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. Upon entering and starting the vehicle, there was a loud snapping sound while turning the steering column. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic for diagnostic testing. The mechanic stated that the pin in the pitman arm sheared off. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000. Ma 10/2updated 11/08/2017
Steering coupler in steering column goes bad and can be felt in steering wheel giving the driver a vague handling sensation and not a good feel for the road surface especially in turns.gm has twelve tsbs on the problem and will not repair for no chargei had to pay for the last one and in 30k they have all fail.

Without warning as i attempted to make a turn at low speed just after start up of the engine the power steering failed. Vehicle then required brute strength turn turn.was able to make it home and get repaired but if this had happened to daughter or wife they might not have been able to steer vehicle because of strength required. My mechanic that repaired vehicle stated that he has seen this occur in gm vans before without warning. Something to do with the immediate failure of power steering box. $362.00 repair with labor.
My 2001 z71 silverado has had the steering sector lubricated twice because of loud bumping.
Brake rotors corroded completely , emergency brake rusted completely , massive rust under truck ,brake calipers rusted , power steering went out ,a.c. While consumer was backing up the vehicle into a parking space, the power steering went out. The dealer found the power steering pump shaft had broken.

Extreme frame rust/rot behind front passenger tire- bottom half of frame rusted and gone- approximately 10 inches

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. The contact inspected the vehicle and observed that both tailgate support cables weakened, exhibited rust corrosion, and partially fractured. In 2005, the vehicle was serviced per nhtsa campaign number: 04v129000 (structure); however, the recall remedy was insufficient. The vehicle was not repaired for the most recent failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.
Cable that holds tailgate failed and threw consumer on the ground. Owner's manual has no weight requirements. Dealer notified. Please provide additional information..
The tailgate to my 2001 chevy silverado fell off while driving @ approx 50 mph vehicle behind me went off road to avoid possible collision during summer 2003, i was told i didn't close it right. Yesterday 2/24/03 noticed on line the u folks were investigating such incidents.
Tailgate support cables both broke when wife dropped tailgate.

I brought my 2001 chevy silverado in for it's annual inspection, i was told that the truck did not pass inspection as the frame was all rusted out, the rest of the truck looks like it is only a few years old and other than the rear bumper, it doesn't have any rust on it, as i have take well care of it since i purchased it new; a few years back, i needed to get all the break sensors replaced, had to replace all the break lines, and replace 2 of the brake rotors and disk, due to rust. When i checked around for a new frame, i was told that this is very common for gm trucks built around 2001. I cannot afford to buy a new truck or pay the approx. $7,000 cost of putting a new frame under my truck. I think that due to all the problems with this particular model year, gm should issue a recall to replace the frames, and reimburse.
Rusting fuel line caused a significant fuel leak in the rear of the vehicle near the fuel tank, while repairing that line i observed several other rusting lines in that area brake, and more fuel lines.
*sc

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverdo 1500. While driving at 5 mph and when the brake pedal was depressed, the vehicle began to shake. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the front wheel bearing assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred.
Spare tire holding cable broke off after hitting a pothole. Tire flew off of truck into oncoming traffic.
Tires size p245r7516 that comes with vehicleis not an appropiate tire for this vehicle .appropriate tire sizeis lt245r7516.also,other tiresare too small for this vehicle, and gmc failedto put appropiate tires on vehicle. Contactedgmc, they took complaint, and statedit wasa sales problem.
While traveling 71 mph left rear tire disintegrated with no warning.tires had 30% wear with multiple breaks on inside of tire. The consumer experienced several firestone tire separations and paid for four tires that were replaced. The consumer states the tires were defective and is requesting reimbursement from the tire manufacturer. (firestone lt265/75r16)
My spare tire support system failed causing the tire to fall from underneath the vehicle. I was travel at about 45 mph, luckily no one was behind me at the time. The tire bounced up off the pavement but stayed in my lane. This support system uses a 3/16" wire for it supporting the weight of the suspended tire. Are there any recalls on this support system?[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500. While driving 40 mph, the spare tire disengaged from the vehicle onto the road without warning. The vehicle was not taken to be diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 247,000.
I'm having problems with intermittent starting. I have power to everything but will not start when key is turned. Been stranded twice. Once it started after 5 minutes the next time it took 26 hours.
Right side of truck does not put out heat and driver side will burn you up.

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)i have a 2001 chevy silverado in which there is an abs recall on this truck that the chevy dealer took care of before i got the truck about a year ago i started to require more distance to stop because the abs was coming on thought it was the snow but then i comes on every now and then still when there is no snow or ice under the truck it seems to be coming on around 5 mph it does not come on all the time neither i have called chevy and they said that it has been fixed i think there should be a better more permanent fix other than taking the sensor out and cleaning it and putting some grease in it i have talked to some other people with same truck guess what same problem this is a relatively easy fix but i think this problem with the chevy should be looked into farther [xxx].

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado. Whenever the contact drove the vehicle he noticed that it took more than the normal pressure in order to depress the accelerator pedal. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that the throttle body needed to be replaced. The contact has noticed the failure since the vehicle was purchased. The current and failure mileages were 110450.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500.while driving 5 mph through a parking lot, the contact applied the brakes and the vehicle continued forward.the brakes eventually began to function.he was able to drive the vehicle to a mechanic and the failure was diagnosed as the vehicle speed control sensor.he will have the vehicle speed control sensor replaced.in october 2002, the speed control sensors were cleaned for corrosion, but not replaced under nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: antilock).the purchase date was unknown.the current mileage was 67,800 and failure mileage was 67,500. * updated 12/12/07 updated 12/12/07
While driving my 2001 chevrolet silverado i am required to use more than the usual amount of force to depress the accelerator, and when i do the vehicle lunges forward.my accelerator pedal wound up "limp" on the floor of the vehicle this weekend when pushing down on the pedal leaving the vehicle unable to accelerate while driving in traffic.the vehicle wound up being towed for repair.

I'm complaining about my 2001 chevrolet silverado. The wheel speed sensor was recalled once and repaired only to have the exact same problem occur a year later. Chevrolet refuses to resolve this critical safety issue at no cost since it was already repaired under the recall. This is the 3rd time this wheel speed sensor issue has occurred. Am i to have no brakes unless i pay a dealer to fix this every year? how is this allowed to continue?
Wheel speed sensors replaced under recall failed again failing to stop vehicle in safe distance under 10 mph.had to replace both wheel speed sensors again.was told brake lines also corroded.have found that a common complaint on chevy silverado.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500.while driving 5 mph or greater, the contact heard a thumping noise coming from the front of the vehicle.the dealer had not inspected the vehicle.the contact inspected the vehicle and felt that the front wheel bearings caused the failure.he stated that the seals for the wheel bearings failed.as of september 20, 2007, the vehicle had not been repaired.the failure mileage was 80,000 and current mileage was 91,000.
