The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 hd.while driving 55 mph, the vehicle crashed into a ditch.the front end of the vehicle was damaged and the air bags failed to deploy.one passenger was injured and a police report was filed.the vehicle was towed to a repair shop and they stated that the air bags should have deployed due to the impact of the crash.the failure and current mileages were 83,000.michigan traffic crash report. Updated 09/18/07

I own a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500hd, my problem started with the heated seats coming on and going off by their self.i took my truck to the dealership but they could not find any problems with the electrical system.now my tachometer and speedometer have stopped working.i think i heard something about defected instrument panel from chevrolet that required replacing the instrument panel but i can not find any information on that.i would like get this problem fixed before it continues shorting out the rest of the electrical system.

The instrument panel cluster suddenly went on our 2003 chevy silverado.gmc supposedly offered a voluntary warranty extension, but told customers not to take truck to dealers unless the issue was present.we have 86,800 miles on the truck.the odometer and battery gauge are broken.it now says we are going 20mph when we are parked!gmc made us pay $45 for diagnostic and repair will cost $415.gmc denies coverage for this issue, based on their policy regarding miles.we do not think truck will pass inspection unless we get repairs done , and we also think not knowing speed you are driving or the status of your battery could pose potential safety risks. We also want to advise others to get it done before problem occurs.

My speedometer is malfunctioning.this was first pointed out by an idaho state trooper when i was pulled over with my family in the truck pulling a trailer.my speedometer read 60 but i was clocked at 79 mph. This last weekend on a trip to down i-5 in california, i was doing what thought was 70 mph but i was passing a lot of cars and when i remember the issue my tachometer read 3500 rpm which means i was doing 80 plus. Then yesterday (10/22/2006) my speedometer read 10 mph when my tach indicated 2100 rpm (~62 mph), which was confirm by by wife following in another vehicle.the problem is inconsistent.the speedometer seems to work for a while but then degrades and the speed indicated does nor reflect the actual speed.between the initial occurrence and 10/20 i did not make any trips longer than 20 minutes and did not notice a problem except for a somewhat jerky speedometer needle.the speedometer seems to "reset" after the vehicle stop for a while.estimated cost of repair is $98-$105 "evaluation and $550-$600 actual repair which includes parts and labor.

My whole dashboard stops working the gauges lights everything just stopped working. I was traveling down interstate and everything stopped working but after a few seconds it all came back on for about 30 seconds and it all shut off again and never came back on i made it home and turned the truck off and went inside. I got up the next morning to go to work and cranked the truck and no gauges or lights were not working still. I slammed my hand down on top of the dashboard and everything came on and was working but that didn't last long and everything shut off again.

Speedometer will occasionally read from 5 to 30 mph from true speed. When this malfunction occurs, stopping the truck will not cause the speedometer to go to 0 mph as expected but will read, for instance, 25 mph. Turning the ignition off and restarting the engine while parked will make the speedometer read approximately 4 mph closer to zero each time. This malfunction has caused me to drive at inappropriate speed many times.

Radio speakers went out while still under warranty. Dealer tinkered with but never found exact problem and have not worked properly since. Then left rear door ajar indicator came on while driving 4 years ago still doesn't work most of the time. Fuel gauge inop. 2 yrs ago. Then speedometer erratic since august last year. Andsince oct 2013 vehicle just dies at low rpms or idles erratic. One out of 53 days most everything.works fine except fuel gauge. Then all of sudden all the problems come back. I have been told it is all probably caused by the instrument cluster but with the it being over the mileage for the extended warranty nothing can be done and since just swapping out the instrument cluster may not fix any of the problems i should just live with it.

Instrument cluster has continued to fail. Called local chevy dealer, because truck is over the mileage it is no longer covered by recall that i was not informed of. First oil pressure gauge quit then speedometer failed. Chevy has known of the problem and should be held accountable to fix this problem.

Bright lite indicator lite comes on dash with no key in ignition, kills battery over nite. Gas gauge in dash doesn't always work, truck has to get moving, sometimes right away and sometimes a little longer. Had to replace my throttle body control a couple months prior

The contacts owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 hd. The contact stated that smoke was emitting out of the center of the air vent duct. The vehicle was taken to a dealer. The technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 68,403 and the current mileage was 150,000.

While driving at any speed, i hear a chime from the instrument panel, then notice that the vehicle can no longer accelerate. I also notice that the engine light is on, and there is a message displayed stating the vehicle is in "low engine power mode".at this point, the vehicle can still be driven but at very low speed only. Any power for maneuverability under heavy traffic or highway conditions is gone.after pulling over to the side of the road and shutting off the engine, the engine light stays on but the engine power may have returned to normal (for a while). The following day or so - the engine light may even stay off, and everything appears normal. When the problem is first noticed, it seems to recur every few days. As time goes on however (maybe 2 weeks) the problem happens more frequently and is less apt to "reset" just by turning off the engine.the first time i took the vehicle into the dealer, they replaced the throttle control sensor connector, for a total bill of about $350. Now, after only 10 month, the problem has recurred. I took it back to the dealer yesterday, after only two of these "events" within one week, and was charged another $535 to have the throttle body replaced ("faulty sensors within the body").last night the problem came back again (yes - same day!). Today the dealer added a "redundant" ground to the throttle body (no charge this time). I was told by the mechanic that this problem has shown up on many vehicles like mine, and that gm seems to be at a loss as to what is causing the problem. This is an electronic throttle control (no direct linkage between gas pedal and carburetor). I am thankful that gm designed this to fail with power loss rather than full power (toyota), but i believe this is a safety concern none the less. Gm is obviously aware of the problem but is doing nothing to repair an obvious design flaw in their product.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 hd. The contact stated that the air conditioner was inoperable and the plastic wires that came from the unit were melted. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not under warranty and there were no recalls addressing the failure. The manufacturer was notified and repeated those sentiments. No further assistance was offered. The vehicle was then taken to an independent repair shop for repair. The failure mileage was 127,000.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 hd. The contact stated the fuel gauge intermittently displayed improper readings of empty and full. The contact also stated the speedometer intermittently displayed improper speed readings. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was told the instrument cluster needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 75,000 and the current mileage was 141,000.

Speedometer stop functioning and doesn't accurately reflect the vehicle's speed. The speedometer is stuck at 120+ mph. I took the vehicle into the gm dealer and they said that the entire electronic instrument panel must be replaced at a cost of over $500. After searching the internet forums it appears to be a widespread problem.see this website http://www.topix.net/forum/autos/chevrolet-silverado-1500/tr5qab2mn19bl1d2j. This poses a safety hazard because the driver does not know the speed of the vehicle.

The instrument panel cluster will stop working. No gauges, speedometer,or tachometer. Usually occurs after vehicle has been driven, turned off and restarted. Know of several people having/had the same issue with this year model. Sometimes the cluster will become active again while driving, but usually doesn't.

The gauges have a mind of their own.it started with the oil pressure gauge and now none of them are working.went to a dealership and they said that it would cost over $500.00 to replace to defected part and that gm issued an extended warranty up to 70,000 miles.why not a recall??? with as many complaints that are here, they should recall this part and stand behind their products especially if they want a bail out.

1) brake line rusted and had to be replaced. 2) a new battery was installed only to be totally dead within 1 week3) alternator replaced as that was thought to be the problem4) finally found the problem and it is the abs system as the modulator / pump for this system would continually run even when the vehicle was turned off.

I have a 2003 chevy silverado 1500 hd with approx 55,000 miles on it.without notice the speedometer failed to work (needle is fixed between 60-120 mph).after researching this problem on the internet, i discovered that many complaints have been levied (in at least an informal setting).

Speedometer fails to function - will be traveling down the road and it ranges from 0-120 mph when i estimate i am actually traveling 35 mph(estimated obviously).has happened on 3 occasions and in now non-functioning.dealership recommends replacing instrument cluster - and admits to a rash of these replacements on these trucks.

Speedometer in my 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 hd quick working. Have hear many other complaints in this issue. The speedometer will be stuck on 50 mph while sitting in the driveway and wont go back down.

I have a 2003 chevrolet p/u and the speedometer works very erratically.it usually registers a much faster speed than i an traveling.when i am stopped it will show a speed of forty or fifty mph.this problem seems to come and go.it is very unsafe to not know your speed.i know many other gm and chevrolet vehicles of this year experience the same problem.

Instrument cluster on 2003 chev silverado 1500hd is not working properly. Instruments read wrong or do not work at all.brought truck to dealer and was told it would cost over $700.00 to fix and could not afford it.received notice from gm last week saying they would cover up to 70,000 miles, my truck has more than that now, but problem started at 50,000 miles.gm should issue a full recall and take care of this hazard.

Speedometer stopped working on my 03 chevy silverado, sometimes gets stuck at 40 mph.

I purchased the truck used with 83,000 miles in august of 2007. About a month later the water temp gauge moved all the way around and then went back to zero and stopped working. Then the speedometer was stuck for a few days and started working again. But for how long? and now i've heard gm issued an "extended warranty" just for the gauges and must have under 70,000 miles instead of a recall.

Speedometer stuck on 120 mph at times.

Speedometer just quit working, jumps from 10 to 70+. Shows a minimum of 10 mph parked. Not exactly safe to not have a clue how fast your going. I searched on the net suspecting an isolated problem, but found this has affected 8 to 10 models for 4 plus years, are you kidding me. Just one of thousands with the same dangerous problem!!!!!

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 hd.the speedometer malfunctioned and the dial remains on zero.the dealer stated that the cable needed to be replaced, but no repairs were made.the failure mileage was 100,000 and current mileage was 103,000.

Speedometer stuck at 40 mph.

Speedometer records wrong speed gradually moving ahead to pegging self at 120 mph.each time vehicle was stopped speedometer will correct by 5 mph.thus, i did not know speed i wasmoving at. Started vehicle enough times to move back to 0.

Speedometer and gauges stop working.

Speedometer quit working at 40120 miles.

Several of the exhaust manifold bolts have snapped/sheared causing exhaust leaks between the exhaust manifold and exhaust port on the cylinder head. I'm learning that this is a common issue that has gone unaddressed by the manufacturer, but is clearly an emissions and functionality issue. Please help in holding the manufacturer accountable for this apparent mechanical defect. As of now, they offer no assistance in repairing the issue.

Ok the problem i'm about to state is a huge problem with the 2003 1500 hds since they where new and chevy has had several complaints over the years with a refusal to repair. The throttle actuator control is what the pedal sensor tells to move the throttle body. Every so often (sometimes multiple times a day) this module weirds out and puts the truck in to reduced engine power (limp mode) and won't do over 25 mph which is very hazardous when traveling freeways and turn pikes where the speed limit is high.i myself have been almost ran over by big rigs because my truck decided to go into this reduced engine power mode in the middle of rush hour. I myself have been on the phone multiple times with chevrolet corporate with them telling me that i'm screwed and to get over it. Don't get me wrong i love my truck but i just wish chevy would stand by their vehicles instead of blowing us off.

Lost power to engine while driving down the interstate highway. Fault on dash showed (reduced engine power). Pulled to shoulder of highway and tried to restart engine to no avail. After sitting for about 5 minutes engine started and check engine light stayed on for a few days. Since that time i have replaced the throttle position sensor and have still been having the same problem for the past 2 years. It will sometimes drive for a few days without any problem, but some days it will occur 10 or more times in a day. I have been on several websites only to see several people are experiencing the same problem even on different models and year vehicle's. This could and may well have caused deathly auto accidents. I have looked for a recall on this problem and could not find one. My question is, "are there any plans to recall effected vehicles for the issue of "reduced engine power?" please check into this asap. Thank you for your time and concern.

Gm 2004 1500hd truck: gm can't fix the reduce engine power problem. The code that they can't fix keeps saying its the throttle body sensor. I have had gm dealer try to fix what this code is telling them but still have the problem.based off research this is a major problem with many other gm truck owners.when this sensor light comes on & displays reduce engine power the truck basically shuts down.i've had this happen running in the left lane of a major hwy and almost got run over.please have gm do something about this problem because i'm sure if it hasn't killed anyone yet it will.only thing different between the toyota problem and the gm problem is one speeds up and the other slows down to 20mph.as i have stated this problem happens a lot so don't pay attention to the incident date i had to enter.

August 2007 purchased 2003 chevrolet silverado 41,000 miles found out after purchase manifold bolts on drivers side and passenger side were broke.took vehicle into chevrolet dealer had left side manifold replaced and bought up grade bolts from gm.as of february 2, 2011 manifold bolts are breaking again causing manifold leak which is a violation of emissions and alsocan cause a fire hazard if this problem isn't addressed that gm has faulty manifolds someone may end up seriously injured.the truck now has 72,000 miles on it dealership was notified of the second problem and no help was given.

3 of the 6 exhaust manifold bolts have broken off on left side ,2 on the right side . I now have the exhaust ticking sound and on occasion get exhaust smell inside cab.i noticed the first broken bolt at approx 55000 miles. I now have 112000 miles.

I was driving along the road this past winter and a car suddenly stopped in front of me...i had absolutely no brakes and thankfullly was able to get around the car into the other lane without injury. The brake lines were all corroded and needed to be replaced. This could have been a serious accident had there been vehicles in the other lane. In addition to this the speedometer often stops working and is registering at the wrong speed.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 hd.while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle lost complete power.upon further inspection, the contact noticed flames under the hood of the vehicle.the fire department extinguished the flames, but the vehicle was completely destroyed.the cause of the failure was unknown.the failure and current mileages were 60,000.

The contact owns 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 hd. The contact stated that the vehicle was making a loud noise. After inspecting the vehicle he noticed that four of the exhaust header manifold bolt heads were missing. The vehicle was taken to a dealer. The technician diagnose that the exhaust manifolds and bolts needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer has been notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 108,000.

2003 chevrolet silverado exhaust manifold bolt broke. Less than 100k miles. Costly repair to have the bolt drilled out and replace all bolts and gasket. Exhaust leaks and can hear ticking noise for the first 10 minutes or so after the vehicle is started. Also causes my check engine light to come on, pulling error codes for oxygen sensors.

These incidents happened during the following yrsat least 3 times a year now for each yr from 2005till 2015coming home from daughters and lost all head lamps and driving lights so was driving in complete darkness with no lights , thankfully we made it home the last 2 miles next day took to mechanic and he replaced the lamps, two weeks later got pulled over due to running lightsone was out and got warning about that .......................this has happened 12 times since we owned this truck since 2005 and we have had to replace the whole headlamp assemblybut now after 6 months lights go out again and get pulled over due to only one headlampis there a problem with the wiring? mostly this is just on drivers sideheadlamp and running light it keeps blowing the lamps out occasionally it blows both sides and front running lamps.

While stopped at an intersection at a red light, the vehicle started to creep forward toward people in the crosswalk.depressing the brake pedal further resulted in it fading, ending in a fully depressed position with no more pedal travel available. The vehicle continued to roll forward into the crosswalk. Placing the transmission in neutral stopped vehicle movement. After stopping and inspecting under the hood and under the front end of vehicle showed leaking brake fluid from one of the metallic brake lines serving the right front brake.after taking the vehicle to my local gm dealer and placing it on the service rack, inspection showed that all the metallic brake lines are severely rusted over the majority of the line surface. The right front line disintegrated to the point where the line separated while checking the condition of the line. The other brakes lines are rusted to the point where failure is imminent. All the metallic brake lines from the master cylinder, down to the abs control module and then out to each brake caliper must be replaced.the failure of the braking system created a serious situation that could have resulted in bodily injury to the pedestrians in the crosswalk. Without placing the transmission in neutral it would have eventually struck a pedestrian.in addition to the brake lines, the fuel lines show excessive rust as well. The dealer does not recommend replacement of the fuel lines at this time, but replacement will be required in the near future.

We have had a significant amount of rust to the entire underside, trailer hitch, and both bumpers on this truck.to prevent it from rusting away, we had to have the cab and bed undercoated.we also had to replace the gas lines, as they were rotted out, which posed potential gas loss and safety issues.

Jan. 2014 in northeast illinois i went to apply brakes for a red light and peddle went to the floor. I was fortunate that there was not another vehicle already stopped at the light in front of me, and was not hit as i coasted through the red light. I was able to use the parking brake for stopping while i maneuvered to my home. Upon inspection the next day, i found the brake line that runs along the truck frame and feeds brake fluid to the front brakes had ruptured. I was astound when i saw the condition of the remaining brake lines under the vehicle and the fact that the lines were not made of stainless steel or some other material that would not rust when exposed to the road salt that used heavily during the winter months in northeast illinois. I'm also concern about the fuel lines because their condition is the same as the brake lines and appear to made out of a ferrous material also.

Yes,i was buying a new trailer when i was going to stop at an intersection, the brake pedal, went to floor, luckily using trailer brakes,i was able to get it stop, notice line broke due to rust,i replaced all brake lines with stainless steel from a company who pre-bend new pieces that should have been installed in this truck, due to cost, now fuel line leaking causing braking down on side of highway, until aaa came but had trailer on that made the situation harder,so after inconvenience, have to put new stainless steel fuel lines.thanks for the time to read[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Below is a list of history with repairs to my truck. In march 2004 i bought a brand new 2003 chevy silverado 1500hd .first 2 yrs front rotars turned covered under warranty. Then 1-21-09 front rotars and calipars replaced due to rot.1-30-09 transmission line replaced rotted.on6-19-09 new starter. 8-29-09 rear calipers and hose rotted 35455 miles.on 9-2-09 abs sensor and left front brake hose rotted.on 8-28-10 power stering pump replaced. On 8-24-11 brake lines to abs rotted 46763 miles. 10-27-11 left rear brake line rotted 47943 miles. My windsheild washer fluid reservoir needs to be replaced leaking insrument panel shows empty. I'm having my left rear brake line replaced next week...its the only one left and i dont want to take the chance of an accident. Mt mechanic states he has never seen this much rust on a fairly new vehicle. Unfortunately i didnt keep records in the early years of ownership but i cant believe transmission lines, brake lines ,calipers can rot that fast. I have never had this experience with past trucks i have owned. I believe there must be some sort of factory defect that is causing this.

My brake lines ruptured under the drivers seat by the abs box. I inspected all of the brake and transmission lines and they are all rusted badly and need replaced immediately. I was pulling my seadoo's when this happened and had to use the emergency brake to stop the truck. I have read a ton of the same complaints on the internet today. When is anyone going to make chevy replace all of the brake and transmission lines? this truck is only a 2003 and looks like a 1903 underneath. The whole frame and undercarriage is rusting badly. Please help. Thank you

The center rear seatbelt retractor will no longerretract on my 2003 chevrolet hd pickup truck.this seatbelt was used by my child.luckily we were parked when we discovered the problem and had to move her to the outboard position.we purchased this vehicle new.while having it checked at the dealership, the service department personnel advised that another owner came in with the same problem and after jerking on the seatbelt several times, the retractor began working again.i have ordered a new seatbelt retractor for the rear center position, but wanted to report this defect.

I own a 2003 chevrolet 1500hd 4x4. It has heated seats which tend to come on by its self and will not turn off. The seats get extremely hot. Since this problem occurred, i'm now getting a service 4 wheel drive light, but the 4x4 seems ok. I think the short in the seats is effecting other parts on my truck.

Severe corrosion lead to a brake line failure and subsequent inability to stop. Brake lines are corroded way before they should have, and much more than the fuel and steering lines. The line leading from the master cylinder to the abs unit was the one that failed, but all are showing severe corrosion.

This was not a wreck but could have been. Complete brake failure on my truck. Lines completely rusted out. Googled this and have seen many complaints on this. Chevy does not make the lines anymore and have redesigned the brakingsystem on 2004 up trucks. $3100 to replace if you can find them. Now i'm stuck with a truck that is not safe to drive. No brakes whatsoever. Thank god it was early sunday morning. Brake pedal went clear to the floor. Had to slam it into 4wd and put trans in low then neutral and then ran off the road to avoid a collision.

While waiting at a stop light with my wife and newborn,i noticed the brake pedal went "spongy" and had no more resistance to the pressure my foot applied to it.i pulled into the gas station at the same set of stop lights with my transmission being my only form of vehicle speed control.thanks be to god for keeping my family and others on the road safe that day from the potential devastation that could have taken place with such a critical failure in the mechanics of this vehicle.

While driving to work i pressed the brake pedal and it went right to the floor. I quickly pulling into a driveway and slammed on the emergency brake because i had zero braking from the pedal. I looked underneath the truck and saw a rusted brake line dripping fluid. If i was on the expressway i would have seriously hurt someone because i lost all braking function.

The brake lines basically rusted off the truck, the first occurrence i went to use the truck and the brake pedal went to the floor and i started smelling brake fluid. Had it towed to have repairs done (06/04/2011) the lines that showed the main problem were changed for new. Exactly 2 years i had my big car trailer hooked up loaded with my tractor. Another line going to the rear of the truck ruptured in the yard. Going back to the shop again, i had a company out west make all new stainless steal lines for it.(06/20/2014) and now i'm again broken down again (03/07/2015). This has cost me a considerable amount of money and i'm not through i fear. This time the abs system wants to continue to run and running the battery down. Gm should be on top of this.

1) brake line rusted and had to be replaced. 2) a new battery was installed only to be totally dead within 1 week3) alternator replaced as that was thought to be the problem4) finally found the problem and it is the abs system as the modulator / pump for this system would continually run even when the vehicle was turned off.

Brake line from master cylinder to abs unit blewout causing spongey brake and brake fluid leak.line rusted out.rest are very rusty.

I was on the interstate driving about 60 to 70 mph when all of a sudden my truck switched to fwd low all on its own. I was able to pull off on the shoulder . I was able toput the vehicle back in 2wd. Later the service 4wd light came on. I also have occasions when all of the dash lights will come on and all the gauges drop and now my abs light flashes and the warning bell rings as i drive downthe road.

I have a 2003 chevy silerado/k1500...in novemeber 2012 a brake line ruptured and i had to have the truck towed into the chevy dealer in paramus where i live...over the holiday it happened again to a different brake line...the dealer told me he was doidn a sinilar job on a car from that year of vehicles....it appears the brake lines can rupture leving the vehicle without brakesthe dealer is ordering me a stainless steel kit ...not from chevy or gm but this should solve the problem as he expects the rest of the brake lines will also fail soon....chevy needs to own up to these faulty brake linesbefore someone is hurt.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 hd. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 mph and approaching a traffic stop, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard upon engagement. There was also a delayed response in the brakes. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The failure was contributed to a ruptured brake line. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000. The vin was unavailable.

I loss all my brakes and almost hit someone. Looked under truck found fluid leaking from back drivers side wheel. After climbing under truck found all my brake lines are extremely corroded. I looked at cars that are way older and had a lot more miles in my area and they have no corrosion. I expect chevrolet to fix all my lines at their cost because this is not normal to see with a vehicle with 55000 miles and to fix one line will not fix all the lines on the truck.

Brake lines went out with no warning - no light showing compression or fluid leaking.still no lights have come on.if we had been going faster, we could have hit something.luckily my husband was driving and he knew how to react by down shifting to save us.the brake lines are all rusted.the truck only has 80,000 miles on it and has been well taken care of.we feel that gm used cheap metal for these lines and could have compromised our lives.

While driving i had to apply my brake to slow down and i realized the my brake pedal went nearly to the floor. I immediately pulled over and checked around the truck and noticed fluid dipping from just behind the front wheel. I opened the hood and realized that i had blown a brake line.when i looked around under the hood at the brake lines, it was obvious that they were rusted. My neighbor had the same complaint with his 2001 silverado, it's definitely an engineering problem.

I was coming to the end of my driveway and the brake pedal went to the floor and wasn't providing any stopping power.the end of our driveway has an incline and i was able to use the emergency brake before traveling into oncoming traffic.i checked the brake reservoir tank and it was almost completely empty.i added more brake fluid and upon applying the brakes, fluid was coming out from underneath the truck.it was dripping from underneath the driver side door and also from some place further back on the truck.i couldn't verify whether the source near the back was a separate leak.all four of the brake lines have significant rust and need to be replaced.the truck is currently not drive-able because any new brake fluid is immediately leaking out and not providing any resistance to the brake pedal.i've checked the brake pads and rotors and they are still in almost new condition.this is a serious safety issue in my opinion and yet seems very common with this line of trucks if you check this forum and others available on the internet.http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/274830/

Pressed brake pedal going over a hill and pedal went all the way to the floor. Pumping pedal did not help to build any pressure. Pulled off the road brake fluid reservoir was empty and fluid was all under left rear of truck. Mechanic inspected rupture in factory steel line and all other lines rusted.

Brake lines are rusted.left rear line busted while going 60 mph and lost all braking ability.luckily i had enough time to apply my emergency brake.this needs to be addressed!

I was pulling into my circle coming down the hill and my brakes started to feel very soft.i was able to stop at the bottom of the hill just below the curb.i was just grateful that there were no cars at the bottom of the hill this time. When i got out i saw a trail of fluid on the street coming down the hill under my truck. I got down and looked under and there was a huge puddle of brake fluid.i towed it to the mechanic and he said all my brake lines looked like they were from a 40 yr. Old car, all rusted out.cost me a boat load to replace, that is after they tracked down replacement lines (took them over a week).thanks chevy, this is obviously a flaw in the lines on this truck.i appreciate you taking my life into consideration and recalling these brake lines. O wait, you didn't?that's right.

Brake line from master cylinder to abs unit blewout almost causing me to rear end vehicle in front of me.

Brake lines rusted through and ruptured resulting in total brake loss and a crash. The lines failed at a point directly under the driver seat. It was in motion on a city street and struck another vehicle also damaging that.

While using the truck to remove a root ball we noticed that the brake pedal was going to the floor. No brake or warning lights were showing on the instrument panel. Our mechanic replaced four brakelines due to rust, corrosion and leaks. We are extremely thankful this happened while working in the back yard and not when traveling down the interstate towing our 3000 pound boat! after seeing all the reported problems on the internet i cannot understand why there has never been a recall by general motors.

Driving vehicle at 55 mph on undivided highway. Applied brakes to avoid animal and pedal went to floor. Drove vehicle slowly back home and found the brake line from front leaking above rear end. Brake lines are all rusted badly. The only safe way to repair this vehicle is to replace all of the brake lines. I never expected this from a 9 year old vehicle.

On the listed date, while in traffic, i applied my brakes and warning sensors chimed notifying me my brakes are failing.i pulled over and inspected my brake fluid reservoir and found itempty.i inspected the lines and found brake fluid leaking behind my driver's side rear wheel.i filled the reservoir and brought the truck to my mechanic.upon inspection, the line attached to the abs was leaking and completely rusted.the other lines were inspected and my mechanic noted that the lines looked as though they were on a 30 year old vehicle.this is a huge safety concern which is going to cost me a great deal of money fix. Thankfully i was the one driving and not my wife or kids.

I was driving along coasting at a lower than normal speed, (fortunately) because i saw the traffic light way ahead of me turn red....not towing anything...no load in the bed of the truck. When i applied the brakes,in a normal/not panicked manner, the pedal went straight to the floor. There never were any warnings/lights, even after the failure.luckily i had enough time, and piece of mind, to manipulate the emergency brake, and come screeching to a stop (by just the rear brakes) with only a couple feet to spare. If i hadn't, (or if the e-brake hadn't worked) i would have plowed into several small cars that were stopped at the light., with my big crew cab truck. Certainly severely injuring many people! i discovered the rear brake line had failed...totally...it is a pile of rust...resulting in complete brake failure! i can send you a photo....i would like to send you a photo! all of the lines are going to have to be replaced in order to safely operate this vehicle again... I have also found (with a quick internet search) countless other identical instances of this occurring in similar model year gm trucks.. Many, years prior to it happening to me! mine only has 50k miles on it, and is garage kept...and always kept spotless. I've always been under the assumption that if a brake line failed, the master cylinder was supposed to shift over to shunt/prevent the leaking line from bleeding pressure...so the rest of the brakes would work?? (not like in the movies) the gov't mandates 5 mph bumpers and everything else under the sun, but not this type of redundant brake feature? what is going on here? they do a recall because the tailgate cables rust, and might damage the tailgate, but don't for rusting brake lines that could kill people!!?? this is unacceptable!!!! i'm very anxious to hear a reply to this..

I have a 2003 chevy 1500hd crew cab. On 5-21-2010 i found that my brake pedal went to the floor when i got in to back down a boat ramp to load my boat. I found that two metal brake lines were rusted into. The rust was under a plastic clamp that held the brake lines in place. I would like to know if this is common on this truck model.

We have had to do extensive work to maintain the brakes in our chevy silverado in safe working condition. They failed suddenly, twice, making the brake pedal go all the way to the ground.costs for repairs were significant, but thankfully no injuries.

2003 chevy silverado extended cab pickup. Brake line corrosion. Brake line burst. Pennsylvania. Brake line burst on drivers side. Brake line burst when brakes applied. Loss of braking ability was the result. Incident occurred on residential street- thankfully there was not an accident. Had vehicle towed to dealer to resolve problem. Apparently there are numerous complaints about the defect of chevrolet's brake-line assembly for the 2003 chevy silverado. Have proof of repair. Is chevy going to recall the inferior materials used in these brake lines?*ln

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 hd. The contact was driving 25 mph when he applied the brakes and the brake line ruptured, causing all of the braking fluid to leak. The vehicle was not repaired.the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vin was unknown. The failure mileage was 140,000.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 hd. While driving approximately 40 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and there were repeated attempts before the vehicle slowed down. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who detected the brake line was completely corroded, which required replacement. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the malfunction. The approximate failure mileage was 19,000.

My brakes failed without warning causing me to go through a stop sign. There was a mini van with 5 occupants that swerved off the road to keep from hitting me. There was no warning at all that my brakes were not working. Upon inspection of the car on 12/28 at a gm dealer i was told my brake system was rusted out and corroded causing my brakes to fail. I have investigated myself this problem and find out it is very common on this year and gm will not do anything about it. Everyone that has this truck is at risk of crashing and doesn't even know it. I was one of them until a few weeks ago.i have been trying to get gm to acknowledge the problem and only been getting the run around from their customer service department in the philippines. The will not supply me with a contact number for a zone rep or anyone else. Please do something about these faulty brake lines before innocent people are killed if it hasn't happened already.

I drive a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500hd.i have had the truck to the dealer where i purchased it for regular oil changes and maintenance reviews.when trying to leave the grocery store parking lot recently i noticed that my brake pedal went all the way to the floor when i attempted to stop after pulling out of my parking space.after pumping the brakes repeatedly, some pressure was present but after pumping more, it was apparent that the brakes were completely out.looking under the truck, i saw a huge puddle of brake fluid.putting more brake fluid in the truck does not fix the problem , as it is only forced out upon pumping the brakes - the failure is permanent and critical - the truck is not road worthy at this point!upon close inspection in the engine compartment and under the driver's side of the chassis, the entire length of brake lines to all four wheels is rusted and one of the lines is completely broken (with a hole expelling brake fluid) under normal driving conditions.the instrument cluster reads "service brake system" and a bell rings repeatedly to warn of the problem.i have not been able to correct the failure yet as i do not have the money to have the dealership replace these rusted brake lines.i have never seen brake lines on any vehicle rusted like this before and i have to believe this is a serious parts problem.i intend to contact my dealership with this issue.

While stopped at a bank teller box i applied the the brakes only to find that the brake pedal hit the floor with no resistance.i exited the vehicle and discovered large amounts of brake fluid near the rear driver side tire.was not able to drive vehicle because the emergency brake was not functional either.

The contact owns a 2003 silverado 1500 hd. The contact was driving approximately 10 mph when he noticed a leak coming from the brake line. In addition, when decelerating the brakes would pulsate unusually and there was an increase in stopping distance and time. The vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic who informed the contact that the brake line was corroded. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 6,000.

Thank you

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 hd. The contact stated that in june 2008 while driving at 5 mph, the abs activated and the vehicle seemed as if it would not stop. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the sensors and surface areas were taken out and cleaned. The problem occurred again a few weeks later and began to occur every time the contact drove the vehicle. The contact called the dealer and was advised to take the vehicle back in for repair. He was also informed that he would be responsible for all repair costs as the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The contact called the manufacturer and was advised to take the vehicle back to the dealership and was also given a case number. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000. The current mileage was approximately 42,500.

Brake lines rusted out & causing brake failure x 3.

03 1500hd silverado approx 72k miles, left rear metal brake line failure and all 4 metal brake lines severely rusted. Failed while pulling my boat from driveway fortunately at low speed and flat terrain, able to stop with parking brake. There is no way these lines should be rusted to the failure point considering the vehicle has spent 5 years in pa and 2 in nc.

Brake line failed on 2003 chevy silverado 1500 hd with 25,000 miles. Truck was serviced by gm dealer at recommended intervals since purchase. After dealer closed, truck had been serviced once by highly recommended independent mechanic specializing in trucks.less than 500 miles after the last service, the brakes felt a little spongy; we drove the truck a few miles and parked. After an hour, we returned to the truck and discovered a puddle of brake fluid under the axle. We drove to the nearest brake repair shop; during this 5 minute drive, the brake warning light came on.when we arrived at the shop, they put the truck on the lift; by this time, it had no brake fluid left in the system. The entire line was corroded, and had to be replaced.

Brake lines have rotten out in 6 yrs with out warning ,and could have caused accident, if i was in traffic low power in booster.

While under hard braking the drivers rear brake failed just above axel.after the repair during the test drive 3 lines ruptured on the drivers side frame rail just below the drivers feet next to the abs module.i see that there has been a nhtsa action number : ea11001 already started on this problem.

My nightmare started when i pulled onto a from my drive way and drove about a half block to the stop sign in my 2003 silverado and noticed a mini van going south. When the brakes were applied the pedal went all the way to the floor and i couldn't stop. No warning on the dash nothing. The van had to swerve off the road to avoid me and almost tipped over containing 5 people. I saw him coming but couldn't do anything to stop in such a short period of time. The last thing on my mind was no brakes. I have been driving for 39 years and never experienced brake failure in my life. Yesterday i called gm customer service and got the usual run around. They told me i had to take it to a gm dealer to have it inspected they were very clear that my car even though only has 65,000 miles on it and is kept in a garage is out of warranty and there are no recalls for the brake lines. The best part was they will replace the lines with standard gm parts the same ones that are on the vehicle now. Doing that will have the same results and a accident waiting to happen. Even if they acknowledge the problem please don't let them do the repairs with the same inferior brake lines that we all have now !!!!

Correction 03 1500hd silverado 64,000 miles, left rear metal brake line failure and all 4 metal brake lines severely rusted. Failed while pulling my boat from driveway fortunately at low speed and flat terrain, able to stop with parking brake. There is no way these lines should be rusted to the failure point considering the vehicle has spent 5 years in pa and 2 in nc.

I own a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500hd 4x4 quad cab truck. After picking up a camper trailer and returning to my home i noticed a significant loss of brake pressure in the pedal. Upon arriving home i noticed brake fluid leaking from a brake line on the underside of the truck at the driver's side door. The 2 lines that run from the master cylinder to the abs unit and the 2 lines that run from the abs unit to the left front and right front brake calipers were severely corroded (rusted). I corrected the problem myself by replacing all the brake lines. My truck only has 82,220 miles on it and this is a serious safety defect that chevrolet should be held liable for. If a vehicle would have pulled out in front of me while returning to my house i wouldn't have been able to stop in time. I understand brake pads and rotors are items that are subjected to normal wear and tear but brake lines should never have to be replaced unless they are chaffing somewhere.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 hd. The contact stated that the undercarriage was severely rusted and caused the brake lines to fail. The contact had a dealer inspect the vehicle and the dealer stated that the rear brake lines failed and the vehicle loss all braking function, including the emergency brake. The failure and current mileages were 110,000.updated 04/27/12*ljupdated 04/27/12

Brake lines rusted out & causing brake failure x 3.

Steering wheel knock cause by intermediate steering shaft. The shaft was replaced at 18,013 miles and failed again at 31,000 miles. Gm has know about this flaw since 1999 and has no known permanent repair.

1. -poor design of steering shaft that allows lower shaft to become very loose and could result in loose or failed steering2.- failed steering collision3. -lower shaft lubricated it failed. Shaft has been replaced ever year during the last 3 years and now general motors refuses to do anything about it.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet silverado 1500 hd. The contact was driving approximately 25 mph when the rear wheels turned in an awkward position causing a loss in steering. The vehicle would not steer in a straight direction. Suddenly, the vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a utility pole. The contact stated the failure was related to the rear axle centering spring. The vehicle was completely destroyed and towed to the residence. The contact sustained injuries to the neck. The failure mileage was approximately 140,000. The vin was unavailable.

My 2003 chevy silverado z71 1500 pick-up experiences power steering failure when going a very slow speeds (i.e. Turning into a parking lot) on right turns only. Chevy dealers have not been able to diagnose the problem...some have said that if i change the steering box from a 670 to 680 model it would help but not eliminate???? has been happening for the last 40,000 miles.

2003 chevy silverado 1500hd intermediate shaft has been replaced 3 times while under warranty. Know the vehicle still has the same problem and chevrolet will not cover the repair.

I have looked for a recall on this problem and could not find one. My question is, "are there any plans to recall effected vehicles for the issue of "reduced engine power?" please check into this asap. Thank you for your time and concern.

2003 chevy k1500 hd has had continuing problem with knocking noise from steering column.already have taken it in once and a "repair" at the dealership was performed but i do not know what that consisted of...they claim they replaced the part but it is not 26,000 miles later and its doing it again worse than before.

2003 chevrolet 1500hd 4x4 - the intermediate shaft made a clanking sound" while turning and driving. It was extremely annoying and loud. I tookvehicle to the dealer twice while under warranty. I now only have 57,000 miles on the truck. Both times they greased the shaft.now it was back even worse.the dealership toldme that gm has come out with a new shaft.however, they do not know if it will be any better or worse, and of course they wanted me to pay for the new part. How could i know if the shaft was on the verge of failure? do i just allow the noise to continue until it failed?will it fail? what will happen when it fails?i would expect gm to own up to this problem.they knew it was a design flaw, but refused to accept responsibility.

Loud noises coming from steering shaft, repaired twice under warranty.

We have had a significant amount of rust to the entire underside, trailer hitch, and both bumpers on this truck.to prevent it from rusting away, we had to have the cab and bed undercoated.we also had to replace the gas lines, as they were rotted out, which posed potential gas loss and safety issues.

Bright lite indicator lite comes on dash with no key in ignition, kills battery over nite. Gas gauge in dash doesn't always work, truck has to get moving, sometimes right away and sometimes a little longer. Had to replace my throttle body control a couple months prior
