Re: 774560 consumer struck vehicle full force and air bags did not deploy.mr
Air bag warning light illuminates intermittently on regualr basis.three trips to dealer has failed to resolve problem.dealer and manufacturer cannot diagnose problem.
When hit at 75mph in the front on driver's side ofvehicle, the air bag did not deploy. The dealer was notified.*scc
Takata recalli was involved in a accident 10-10-2016 at 9:10am, a vehicle pulled in front of me causing me to hit them with the front of my truck, the driver side airbag did not deploy...updated 10/28/16
The contact owned a 2001 chevrolet s10. The contact stated that the vehicle crashed into a light pole, but the air bags did not deploy. The contact mentioned that the driver hit his head on the windshield upon impact. A police report was filed. The driver received stitches and complained that his back and neck were constantly hurting. He also sustained bruises and abrasions. The vehicle was declared destroyed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileages were 180,000.
Made turn on secondary while was raining, another auto was in front passed and slid on wet road. Vehicle hit a utility pole head on , and air bags did not deploy. Auto was smashed badly in front. (may be totaled).
Consumer was involved in a major collision where the vehicle flipped approximately 6 times ultimately crashing into a wall.neither the driver or passenger air bags deployed.
Consumer was in head on collision and the air bags didn't deploy during the collision. Ts
Dt*:the consumer stated while driving at 35 mph another vehicle came across the median and crashed into the vehicle.upon impact the driver's seat belt failed to lock and both frontal airbags failed to deploy.the consumer sustained injuries to the neck and back.there was a fire coming from the engine area after impact.the fire department cut all the electrical wires to extinguish the fire.although the police responded no report were filed.the vehicle was towed to the dealership were it has not been inspected.
Failure of airbags to deploy during an auto accident.
While driving at a speed of approximately 40 mph, a large chevrolet van shot across the front of my vehicle from a side road. I struck the other vehicle full force but my air bags did not deploy. This resulted in additional injury to me from the seat belt and shoulder strap that i was wearing. In addition, my right arm struke something during the crash, causing injury to it. The rescue people were also very concerned about getting me out of the vehicle (the driver's door was jammed) before additional injuries might be caused by the air bags deploying unexpectedly. Shortly after taking ownwership, i had reported a vibration problem with the truck to chevy. Chevy stated that this was a known problem to them which they referred to as "frame shake" and refused to do anything to fix my truck. I now wonder if the "continuous vibration" of the truck did not contribut to the air bags not working. Either way, the failure of the air bags could have resulted in death instead of just additional injuries. Chevy needs to do something about both problems immediately.
Another driver was swerving in and out of traffic, consumer lost control, and driver's side airbag deployed.consumer did not hit anything.passenger side didn't deploy.
Truck has abs lights on when driving at lower speeds as soon as the fluids are not cold the check gushes light comes on and the oil pressure gauge needle drops until the throttle is again depressed... Also abs in rear shakes whole truck when going below 50mph and then continues up to 80mph before subsiding. The truck has serious steering issues constant leaks caused i'm sure my rack and pinion are worn down as well as now my tires and supension i have so many problems like the interior is crumbling to pieces the body has giant holes from improper painting options on this model i have over sized tire wells that are rusted completely out it make your company look silly for not making these vehicles better when they last people keep buying them again and again! seems like you probably use parts for many years on many models funny how every year including the year it was manufacturered there were recalls except for mine is that just because it's older
While traveling on i85 at 70 mph in the far left lane passing a car i hit the rumble strips on the shoulder and the truck lost all power.i was able to move to the shoulder on the right side of the road.thinking i would not be able to restart the car to my surprise the car started back and i took off.i forgot about this until i recently heard of recent recalls.
2001 chevy s-10 four cylinder automatic appeared to be dead. When key inserted and turned over there were no lights on dash. After it sat a few seconds i attempted to restart engine.all dash lights and gauges appeared to come on.the radio was reset to 1:00 as if all systems had went dead. There was a whining noise coming through into the cab of the truck and all the dash lights seemed to flicker.this has happened three times in the last four days.all instances are for just a few seconds and then everything appears to be okay on the restart except that the clock has always reset to 1:00.the last instance today occurred as i started the truck and left a parking space.i got about 50 feet and the vehicle died and coasted to a stop with all dash lights inoperative.when i turned key off for just a few seconds and then attempted to restartagain everything came back on and the clock was reset to 1:00.
Alternator noise feeding through radio on occasion after turning vehicle off and restarting noise appears to go away.flicking lights on instrument panel and radio, started out of a parking place with this happening and the truck moved 5 feet before losing all power.truck would not start, no lights or alarms.left key in the ignition after 20 minutes all alarms and lights returned to normal and truck started with 1 turn of the key.can not take the truck to the shop until it is making the noise again, because they will tell me that they can't find anything wrong.what would have happened if the truck would have lost power when i was doing 65 miles an hour on my way home from work?
I was returning to el pasofrom kerrvilleat nightwhen the headlamps dimmed and the truck lost powermost traffic was going 80 -85. It wasscary.

Second complaint for same issue.dealer says that nothing can be done without vehicle backing up my claims, said to bring it in when vehicle is acting up.alternator type sound coming through radio, all lights flickering (dimming and brightening), truck stalled two times last night.truck gets nothing when you try to restart, no lights, no alarms, no engine click, no turn over...nothing at all.however, 20 minutes later truck will restart, with everything reset and clock reading 1:00.did this last night twice, once last week.called dealer today and they said that they couldn't test it because the computer reset itself when the truck shut down.bring it in when it acts up again.....even though there is no gaurantee that i will make it to the dealer without the truck stalling!!!!!that's comforting to know!!!!!!
The fuel light and service engine light and abs light comes on won't shut off on my 2001 chevy s10 crew cab.
Gas gauge not working properly when gas tank is full of gas the gauge will show empty, half full or full.the defective gas gauge faulty reading have been a problem on numerous models of gmc automobiles.have a technical service bulletin been issued to the concern dealership. The price to repair this problem range from $250.00 dollars to $500.00 dollars. Battery...leaking acid out of the positive terminal.across leads and down into the wiring. Replaced battery. Truck would not start and given funny readings from gauges.
Dt*: the contact stated the battery in the vehicle has been replaced three times within the last five years.the first one exploded and leaked acid inside the vehicle.the dealership replaced the battery with an ac delco battery; the same brand of battery that was sold with the vehicle.this battery failed in less than one year.the third battery also failed within one year of purchase.while driving 40 mph the vehicle stalled.an independent mechanic tested the battery and found that all of the cells were dead.
My 2001 s10 died, and would not start, when i checked the battery, the positive battery cable fell off, along with part of the battery. Corrosion on the positive battery cable, also caused the end of the cable to fall off easily. Truck had to be towed home. New battery, and aftermarket battery cable treminal seems to have fixed the problem.truck only had 41000 miles on it, and already out of warranty.
While driving 45 mphvehicle stalled without prior warning. Dealer said there was a short in the wiring harness, had blown 2 fuses.dealer rerouted the wiring harness so that it would not get as hot, stating that the vehicle would not likely stall again.
Dt:2001 chevrolet s10.the contact stated the vehicle will not start immediatelywhen it was damp.it tooka long time for vehicle to start. The vehicle was taken to a mechanic, and they could not find what was wrong with the vehicle. While driving 50 mph front wheels locked up and the vehicle lost brake power. Emergency brake had to be engaged to assist in stopping the vehicle.dealership indicated that this occurred because the steering wiring cable was grounded to a location where itshould not have been. This resulted in the wiring being exposed and rubbed, causingan electrical short.to correct the failure dealership replaced the wiring harness.
While making a left turn vehicle stalled, and vehicle would not restart. Consumerhadvehicle towed to the dealer for analysis, and mechanic determined thatcoil wire needed to be replaced due to a burn out.

They said nothing was wrong with wires. Driving lights turn on by themself while car is not running, cannot shut off headlights, had to disconnect headlights.took to another shop. Has been in shop for over a week now and they said our wiring harness was melted. Some kind of white lubricant or silicone is inside of harness? we have pictures to prove it. Our abs light keeps coming on and when it does the abs don't work.it comes on whenever it wants.it is the same issues as the 2000 are having and they have a recall.it recently caused the back wheel not to move at all. We were told the spring inside the module is going out.it also affects the air bag from going on.also, the ignition won't work the truck won't start.it takes several tries to get it to start.we were just told that it's the starter.the seatbelt locks intermittently and won't let memove.

I am smelling a strong odor and smoke of oil burning on the exhaust of my 2001 chevy s-10. It is coming from the engine compartment i went to the auto hobby shop at the us naval base and put the vehicle on a lift to see where the leak was coming from. The technician at the hobby shop has an s-10 also. Hiswas doing the same thing. His was coming from a leaky valve cover gasket that would drip oil down the back of the engine on to the exhaust. I could not get a clear look. I did see oil collecting on a brace on the frame near the exhaust. I an afraid that the oil will catch fire. I haven't driven the vehicle since i noticed the problem. I am scheduling an appointment with the local chevy dealer to have it checked out.

There are 40,000 miles on my 2001 s-10 and the fuel pump went out. I filled the tank full of gas and 8 miles down the road , the fuel pump went out. I had the vehicle towed to a chevrolet dealer and it cost over $900.00 to replace the pump. $500.00 for the pump, $60 for the diagnostic, 400.00 for the labor. This is unacceptable! .
Filled my s-10 truck up with gas in the evening and the next morning the fuel pump failed. This is the second vehicle that this has happened. The first one was my 1997 chevorlet lumina.
My fuel pump went out without warning. The high cost was unexpected. After making comments to several people, i have found out that about 50% of the people that i have talked to had the same problem throughout the entire gm line.

Vehicle had a fuel leak that set off service engine light. Alsosmelled odor of gas.
Vehicle running out of fuel with a 1/4 tank showing on fuel gauge. Dealer was not notified at this time.

Gas gauge in my truck has been erratic since day 1. I have brought it back to the dealership numerous amounts of time. I thought it waslack of knowledgement from the dealership so i brought it to another gm service garage and they told me becasure of the design of the gas tank they would not be able to fix the problem. I have run out of gas twice and almost had a serious accident once. The needle reads fine u7ntil it reaches 1/4 of a tank and then it drops to empty and then you are on your own. When driving down the highway and the needle reaches 1/4 of a tank the needle doesn't move until you come to a stop and then it drops to empty and the gas gauge doesn't come on to let you know that you are low on gas. I have had it with this truck and the dealership. Please help !!! i let the 1st dealership take my truck and drivie it because they said that they couldn't duplicate the same problem they put 400 miles on my truck and said that the gas gauge didn't do what i was saying. I drove it out of their yard and went 15 miles and the truck did what i was saying it was doing. I think that i have been more than patient with this garage.
Fuel gauge does not accurately reflect fuel in the system(reads empty at any given time with or without fuel).dealer advises that i am at fault because i failed to keep the fuel tank more than half full.dealer will not fix fault.my wife now refuses to drive the truck because she never knows if it out of gas or not.
Gas gauge does not work (reads empty at all times now). The vehicle was taken to the dealership where it was purchased to have the problem fixed while under warranty (under 35k mi). There's a reoccurence of the problem. In one ocassion a close call collission in a highway was barely avoided due to the innacurate gas gauge reading.
Dt: contact stated all of the gauges on the dashboard suddenly stopped working andwere inaccurate. The speedometer was stuck at 100 mph. The tachometer showed a readout of zero. The fuel gauge indicated the fuel tank was empty, although there was fuel in the tank.
Consumer states his auto has been in the shop 4 times, and each time he was told that it is a programming issue, and there is no fix for it at the present.consumer states when his gauges reaches 1/4 of a tank the gauge drops to empty. Nlm
Fuel guage sticks in the full position all the time, this resultng in a stall vehicle on the highway requiring owner to move a disabled vehicle into the breakdown lane in the middle of a freeway. The vehicle had to be towed away.
Consumer stated that vehicle in the last 3 months in repair shop for transmission problems 9 times.after bringing vehicle to repair shop shop everything else started to break down.also, fuel pumpwas replaced 3 times.fuel gauge operated poorly, and vehicle died/stopped while driving on the road.
Inaccurate fuel gauge reading at 1/4 tank or less. Since june 2001 (3,000 mi.)have complained to chevrolet about this problem. Items replaced include sender/pump assembly. Gauges, fuel level sensor, j3630 module. In may 2002 service manager informed me this was a "self inflicted" problem, that i kept throwing it in neutral, and they were done with it. Embarrassed, i did not follow up on any more complaints. As of this date, still have problem, vehicle has over 50,000 mi. Noticed that others have had this problem, too.
Fuel gauge is not calibrated properly and apparently cant be.the extended cab s-10 ls models have 19-gallon gas tanks standard.the gauge reads full when full but seems to gauge my fuel consumption faster than i am really using it.it was most concerning the first time the light came on.i thought at first i was getting about 13 miles per gallon when half of my driving is highway.when the gauge gets down to the 1/8 tank line the fuel light comes on.when i go to the station the tank will generally take only about 13 gallons meaning there is 6 remaining in the tank.it has been consistent since i bought it and over the almost 40,000 miles ive driven it.i still dont trust it completely and use my trip meter to gauge its accuracy.generally i just make it a practice to refuel when the light comes on.i know i have about 3/8 of a tank remaining when that occurs.
While driving 45 vehicle stalled. Consumer was unable to restart vehicle, and hadit towed to the dealer, andmechanic determined that the fuel gauge was inoperative, and needed to be replaced, and replaced it four times. However, the problem recurred.
I purchase this vehicle in april 2015 (used) i drove the vehicle home and it registered a half a tank of gas, i drove it a few days and the gas gauge needle did not move. I notified the auto center where i purchase the vehicle and took it back for repairs.five weeks after the repair the gas gauge is still faulty. I was driving on the highway and the vehicle shut down (out of gas) the gas gauge needle read a quarter tank of gas. I contacted the auto center where i purchase the vehicle and i was told the s10 and the gmc model of this vehicle has a history of faulty gas gauge's. My only recourse is to have this item repaired again without any guarantee the same problem will happen again.----2001 chevrolet s10 fuel sdystem, other bulletin 13599---action number 10001283report date mar 01,2003thank you [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).'*pm

The door latches have faulty springs that break causing the doors on vehicle not to shut or can come open. Have 2 vehicles with same problem. The other is 2002 pontiac grand am which has a gm door lock. These door latches on these are the
Both cables that connect the tailgate to the bed of the truck snapped.
I found the driver side tailgate support cable of our 2001 chevrolet s-10 pickup snapped. The passenger side cable has not snapped. Under nhtsa action number ea05008-special policy-i would like to request that both support cables be repaired free of charge just as stated in the defect investigation summary.please contact me as soon as possible. Thank you.
I have a 2001 chevrolet s-10 pick-up with 4-doors and 4wd.vehicle has been well taken care of with no damage. The metal door post frame where the door latch is attached is disintegrating due to what appears to be a very thin metal section. It appears that the door may soon come open during a right turn due to a failure of the dorr latch mechanism. This may cause substantial injury and vehicle damage.
The handle that opens the door, which was orchased brand new, broke. There was no inner handle from the door. This handle broke at least two times.the consumer stated that the handle was made of lightweight plastic.*tc
Latch on the 3rd door breaks and the door will not open.this is a very weak component.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet s-10. The contact stated the plastic third rear door latch would continuously fracture from the vehicle. The contact would have the latch replaced and after the fall and winter seasons, the latch would fracture again. The dealer advised the failure was caused by the material used in the design of the latch. The failure mileage was 20,000 and the current mileage was 75,000.
The door latch on the third door breaks away from the internal mechanism.materials are too weak.
Latch on third door breaks.jlg
I simply tried to open the third door to my chevy s-10 extended cab and the plastic door handle completely broke off.i have not been able to open my door since then.
The handle on the third door of my 2001 extended cab chevy s10 broke off.it occurred with normal use.there is no other method in which to open the door.i cannot figure out why it was made of plastic.this is definitely a manufacturing default.

Tailgate cable broke in half on drivers side. 2001 chevy s-10 crew cab. No events leading up to failure. Potential hazard if hauling a load of lumber with tailgate down or if a person were sitting on the tailgate as it snapped. Potential injury could occur in either situation. Recall already exsists for full size cheverolet pickups using the same cable. Correcting the failure would involve the cable itself, as well as the latch on the tailgate that the cable is connected to.

The tailgate straps rusted through and broke on both my chev s10 year model 1997 and 2001.the replacement cost is higher than the cost of the straps.,because they have increased the price with a modification that costs 6 times more than the replacement strap.
Tailgate was down fell off and i drove down the highway with it hanging on by onetailgate strap
My wife had hauled a load of dirt in the cargo area of our 2001 chevrolet s10 pickup.after unloading the dirt, she was putting the tailgate back up, and the left hand side of the tailgate fell off.she was able to slide the tailgate back into place.
On my 2001 s10, one tailgate support cable broke when lowering the tailgate.i have seen a recall on these cables on the full size trucks, but not the s series trucks, yet the cables are the same construction and seem to have the same widespread breakage problem.gm refuses to warrant these cables or include them in the recall.
Broken tailgate cable. We do not know what caused this cable to break. We have not repaired or replaced the cable.
Tailgate cable broke causing damage to the tailgate.replaced with parts from a salvage yard.
Parking brake wont stay engaged when pushing pedal to the floor.
The parking brake is inoperable. The rachet mechanism does not work--i.e. Does not holdthe brake in a set position. Worked the prior time set on a hill 5 months earlier.
While parking forward up a hillplacing vehicle in gear, and usingemergencypark brakevehicle will roll backwards.
Park brake will not hold vehicle unless in park, if vehicle is in neutral it will roll. Dealer stated that was how vehicle was designed.. Consumer stated the parking brake worked when the vehicle was first purchased.
Parking brake worked well when purchaced does not work in reverce and only on one side at present foreward will not hold on gravel on mild slope either direction. Parking brake cannot be used for steep hill start standard shift.
For 2 weeks the truck felt like it was hesitating somewhat when accelerating. Then when driving home on dry pavement one night, a pop sound was heard & second gear was gone. From a dead stop, rpm's go up to 4000 or 4500 before it down shifts into 3rd gear. There is also no reverse gear. Chevy says it is the "sun gear" that blew. Truck has 78000 miles on it. You either rebuild it for $1600 with a new sun gear, or replace the tranny for $2600.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet s10.the contact noticed that the engine warning light was constantly illuminated on the instrument control panel.she took her vehicle to the dealer and they replaced the fuel filter.several months later, the engine warning light illuminated again.the contact took the vehicle back to the dealer and was informed that the pcm needed to be replaced.the vehicle has not been repaired.the manufacturer stated that there was no recall for the vehicle; therefore, she would have to assume liability for the repair cost.the failure mileage was 80,000 and current mileage was 146,000.
Transmission was replaced but problem was not fixed. Brakes were replaced but problem was not fixed.
While traveling at 70 mph, vehicle started to down shift and the driver came to a stop, once going up a hill the vehicle started to lose power, driver pressed gas pedal, and there was no response, then suddenly vehicle took off. . consumer stated when she stopped to make a turn, the vehicle would not move up the hill, and the accelerator pedal was to the floor, once the vehicle was put into low gear it moved.

Missing insulation caused very loud grinding noise when stopped with vehicle in gear.
Transmission in my 2001 s10 chevrolet 4wd p/u failed as i was driving behind a school bus...children were let off and as i tried to accelerate, the transmission failed without warning and the vehicle behind me almost hit me from behind.. I pulled over to let vehicles pass and put myself in a position where i had to back up first to get back on the road.. I put my truck in reverse and couldn't move at all.. I found that i had 1st and third gear but no 2nd fourth or reverse..the transmission had no prior symptoms of anything being wrong.. When i took this vehicle to a dealer...i explained the situation and the mechanic knew exactly what had happened.. He stated that sun shell had broke inside the transmission..he then showed my several other broken sun shells he had to replace in other vehicles and how poorly they were manufactured and that gm had replacement parts made of a higher standard that was suitable for the application...he estimated the repair bill to be approximately 1600 dollars!!!hoping that there wasn't any other damage to driving further with this broken part...my question is this...if gm knows these parts a faulty and notified their mechanics to replace them with a part that they know will hold up to the task, why should the consumer be subject to a 1600 dollar or better repair bill, and why isn't there a recall on this??..the mechanic stated that he was surprised mine lasted as long as it did saying he saw this transmission part fail with as little as 35000 miles on them...i appreciate any help onthis matter as i yet have to decide whether to have this repair done or not..i am really surprised at a company such as gm would knowingly sell vehicles with inadequate parts, and hope they outlast their warranties so the consumerwould be stuck paying the bill to have their mechanics rebuild their faulty transmissions to satisfactory standards.....thanks for your time concerning this matter............tom.
Every three thousand miles the vehicle burns 2 1/2 quarts of oil. Took to dealer to have oil consumption test, front end makes popping noise, sensor changed less than 1000 miles and transmission slips.nlm*yd
Horrible problem with the shifting of transmission. Transmission was rebuilt 6 months ago due to the burn out of the 2nd and 3rd gear. Shifting has not changed since the rebuild. Vehicle easily slips out of gear and increasingly loses speed...no matter if the gas pedal is to the floor or not. Truck will go 65 mph in 2nd gear with pedal to the floor and lose speed rapidly still. Second, brakes lock up going over small bumps, and then seem to not want to work properly on occasion.lastly, tailgate cables have snapped after i sat on the tailgate (i'm 5'0" and 100lbs!!).

No special events leading to failure.at approximately 30000 miles, the 4x4 shift actuator failed during extreme snow conditions, causing vehicle to become stranded on highway. Shift actuator replaced with genuine gm part at dealership. Note: per dealer, shift actuator is not covered by either gm warranty or the extended warranty on drivetrain and axle.it was called a "normal wear" item.general motors has not responded to emails or phone calls regarding this vehicle.

Clutch pedal moved high enough to cause knee to jam against steering wheel and doormaking it difficult to operate clutch or steering wheel.mr
When turning the frontmade a loud popping noise. Consumer felt the noise was coming from the drivetrain, and could result in the drivetrain breaking at any time. Dealership will be contacted.
During 41,000 service observed rear pinion seal leaking, after 3 attempts to get the correct seal, finally found the correct one. Parts stores only show 3 different seals for a 2001 s-10 pickup w/ 4.3l engine and automatic transmission. Had to go to 2003 s-10 pickup to find the correct seal.
Webbing on driver side seat belt is unraveling.dealer is replacing it.
Clips in the seat belt designed to keep the metal latch in place fell out, resulting in unraveling.dealer notified and replaced seat belt.both front seat belts also do not retract properly; on occasion, the seat belts will not pull from their housings at all.
The consumer was involved in a major collision where the vehicle flipped approximately 6 timesand ultimately crashed into a wall.the front driver and passenger seat belts had come unlatched.the vehicle hydroplaned after hitting water in the road, spun around 5-6 times, flipped back to front, hit a rock wall, and flipped on its outside. *scc

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet s-10.the contact stated that the passenger seat would not remain latched and kept sliding back.passengers have sustained minor leg injuries due to the failure.he also stated that the smog hose kept catching fire, which caused the wire harness to become heated.as a result, the contact lost control of the vehicle while driving 90 mph.the purchase date was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 99,400.
Vehicle was hit fromrear at 30 mphand driver's seat collapsed backwards.please give any further detaills.
Metal seat release lever cut consumer's right leg when he exited the vehicle. *mrthe consuemr had to get stitches at the emergency room.
Passenger's seat is unable to stay at the locking position. Dealer has been notified, and has tried to repair problem; but was unable to do repairs.
Ref:2001 chevy s-10, extended cab, 4x2the driver seat was adjusted forward (closer to the steering wheel), and while driving my daughter's (5' 2") seat moved all the way back where she could no longer maintain control of the vehicle.i tested the seat, while it was park and i can adjust the seat closer to the steering wheel and i can push the seat back everytime without using the bar that locks the seat in place.
The passenger seat does not latch properly.it has been to the shop on numerous occasions both under warranty and recently having to pay out of pocket and it still does not latch properlyif you brake the seat slides forward, causing a possible injury to the occupant, possibly throwing them through the front windshield.adjustments have been made, and both of the seat rails have been replaced.also, there is the lose of the vehicle while it is in the shop.i believe that this is possibly a defect with all 2001 chevy s-10 pick up trucks.
Consumer stated that the passenger side seat is not locking in position. Dealer replaced the track.
The pasenger seat would not securely latch in place.when i would brake the vehicle, if the seat was not in the farthest back position, itwould immediately slide all the way to the forward position.after 3 attempts to fix it, including replacing both seat rails, gm advised my dealers service dept. That unless the carpet below the rails was cut away the rails would not bolt downsquare to the floor.this kept the latching mechanism from securing the seat in place.apparentlygm was aware of this, but i was never notified that the problem existed.any passenger in my pickup could have been severly injured if i had been required to make a hard stop.i feel the manufacturer should notify oweners of such a defect that could cause injury.have other owners of this vehicle been notified of the potential danger?
Consumer stated the seats failed to lock into position along seat tracks, and will move unexpectedly during normal operation, dealership has examinedvehicle and was unable to effectively remedy the problem. Consumer also stated the center console lid was cracked, fan was inoperative.
When looking throughrear view mirror lower right halfwas obstructed bypassenger's head restraint that sat too high, causinglack of visibility. Dealer was not notified at this time. Feel free to provide any further information.
The passenger side seat does not lock in place. As a result when applying the brakes suddenly the seat will fly forward without warning.
My 2001 s10 chevrolet pick up abs light has been on for ever and the brake shops and the tire store mechanics tell me there are a lot of chevrolet trucks with this problem. The repair estimates i have received range from $1000.00 to $1500.00.after internet research i have found this is a big problem and it has to do with two solder points in the abs control circuit board at the abs head. Some folks take this unit apart and solder these two points and they work/repaired the problem, sometimes not. .is general motors fixing these problems??
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet s10. While driving various speeds and depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle failed to stop and the brake line fractured. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was not repaired. In addition, the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic and the brakes were replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 99,000. Thevin was not available.
The emergency brake is missing the teeth for holding the brake in place.also the abs light is always on and they say it is the master that needs replacement at over $1,200. This is only a danger if using the cursor control on wet pavement which i never use due to the abs not working.
My brakes do not always work; i often have to pump the brakes up just to be able to get them to apply. It is very scary. I can put my foot all the way to the floor, and the truck will barely slow down. I feel i will likely rear-end somebody or roll into a busy intersection because the brakes will not work.
Our abs light keeps coming on and when it does the abs don't work.it comes on whenever it wants.it is the same issues as the 2000 are having and they have a recall.it recently caused the back wheel not to move at all. As i was driving i was approaching a four way stopand applied the brakes any the brake pedal went to the floor. The brakes worked fine for the stop before this one. I tried to pump the brakes and the pedal still went to the floor and the vehicle finally started to slow down, i had to down shift to stop in time. I was able to get the vehicle to a firestone service station down the street. They found one of the main brake line shad corrosion and had rusted through and the brake fluid leaked out as i applied the brakes. I was lucky. I had my 2 year old son in the car at the time.i think my years of driving experience allowed me to avoid a serious collision.there was no warning about the failure of the brake lines. Also the mechanic noticed serious rusting of the rear disc backing plates, these will also need replacing.so far the cost is about $500. For just the brake lines.the truck has under 60,000 miles. I hardly drive it.
I was turning left and another car coming from the opposite direction made a right turn in front of me and i hit my brakes and tried to stop but my abs did not kick in and i slid about thirty feet and hit there car.
The brake lines have rotted causing brake to travel to the floor and barely stop. This is the 2nd time my brake line has failed.
Abs brake system continuously becomes inoperable and the light comes on with the red brake light. The dealer says it trash in the system and doesn't think it needs to be replaced. Now the lights stay on all the time and inspection is due. Due to this manufacturer defect, the part cost $900.00 and then labor, job will be $1300.00. I have a 2000 fordwindstar van with the same problem. Is there something that can make the manufacturer pay for the repair? this is a closed system that has never been touched or serviced.
The parking brake is inoperable. The rachet mechanism does not work--i.e. Does not holdthe brake in a set position. Worked the prior time set on a hill 5 months earlier.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet s10.while coming to a stop, the vehicle drove over a small bump in the road, and the brake pedal extended to the floor.the brakes had to be pumped in order to stop the vehicle.the failure occurred on four separate occasions.the engine and abs lights illuminated intermittently on the instrument panel.the vehicle was taken to a mechanic and no failures were found.the vin was unknown.the failure mileage was 50,000.
At low speed and when going over bumps in road the abs system engages making it hard to stop. This has been happening for the last 5 years that i have noticed and happens everytime this situation happens.

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet s-10 pickup. After taking the vehicle in for a state inspection they found that the front brake rotors rusted very badly and had fallen apart. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who replaced the rotors and brake pads at the contacts expense. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance for the repairs. The vin was unavailable. The failure mileage was 108,000.
Brake light and abs light come on and stay on for a while and then go off. After braking and rolling over a small bump in road at stop sign pedal loses pressure and stopping becomes hard. I rolled past stop sign and was lightly struck on passenger side door. I have investigated this problem and i am not the only one to have experienced this problem.
Brakes failed to stopmy truckon exit ramp in stop and go traffic.had to pump brakes to stoptruck.didnt think much about it until truck started pulsating during normal braking; 13000 miles on truck . Only when antifreeze was leaking from engine could i leave it with a dealer. I told them the brakes failed onceand they ;brakes are not working properly.this truckhas 5 year 100,000 mile exstended warantythat i payed for. Iam not a mech, but i have worked on cars for twenty years .the dealer said under normal wear the truck needs a brake job on front 250 dollars ,15000miles highway driving.i dont care about the brakes ,because i can repairthem my self .iam only concerned about brakes failing again .
When stopped on hill brake pedal will slowly go down after holding it tight. Dealer has put vehicleon computer, but claimed therewas no defect.
I noticed many other complaints similar to what i have experienced. Without warning, over a couple of small bumps or area of rough road, all braking is lost. It is a scary feeling especially if there is traffic or a trafficcontrol device in front of you. I did notice that this happens less with weight in the pickup box.
Contact states: last month husbandcouldn't go any faster then 35 mph in a 55 mph zone . It was like something was stopping the wheel back from moving, and it started smoking from the wheel. Took vehicle toauto zone, and they said the brake was pressing up against the wheel. They had the brake pads and calipers changed. Butthat did not fix the problem. They took the car to the dealer. They put on loaded brake pads, and redid the hoses and the calipers . However, the problem wasnot solved, and they claimed that contaminated brake fluid was in the hoses. There was no contaminated fluid put in the car. Insuranceadjusters stated they did not see any signs of contaminated brake fluidand that it was something mechanical.
Consumer states that when brakes are applyed they do not hold, had abs senor replaced problem reoccured.
Driver's side seat belt will not retract fromhousing mechanism. Also, when vehicle was stoppedwith foot depressed on brake pedal, pedal went allway down tofloor . Consumer has contacteddealer. Please provide any further details.
As our son was driving our 2001 s-10 ext cab pickup home, he came into a curve and the truck had no braking power.he said he heard a grinding noise in the vehicle and had no brakes.he went off the curve and hit a tree.the truck was totaled.my son as well as his two friends were taken to area hospitals luckily, no one was seriously injured as they had their seat belts on and weregoing the speed limit.i would hate to say what would have happened if they would have been traveling at a faster rate of speed.after seeing similar complaints filed by other 2001 s-10 owners, i'm wondering if someone will haveto be killed before they rectify this brake problem.
I have taken this to the dealer three or 4 times.when they drive it around the parking lot it doesn't do it.the pedal would go to the floor.it doesn't do it all the time.the brakes have gotton better on regular driving now.when you go over a few little bumps that the pedel disappears.i went right through a stop sign after hitting a few bumps.if aanother car had been coming i would have hit it.the car stops , but not whenit should .my son drove the car and said it did the same for him also.i told themat the dealer to go over some bumpsand see what it does, but they did not.this is the dealer frank beck in hillsdale mi. And the dealer royal chevrolet in coldwater , mi. Both dealers said they couldn't find anything wrong.didn'tput on hoist .i can't believe my truck is the only one with this problem.i am afraid i will have a bad accident , maybe kill someone with this brakeproblem, or get killed myself.i don'tknowwhat else todo about this or who else to go to for help. I will be expecting to hear from some one soon .sincerely yours, [xxx].parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
The anti-lock brake system did not work effectively, when the consumer made a panic stop, the vehicle continued to move, also the front of the vehicle vibrated severely, the manufacturer/ dealer stated it was normal.ph
When driving at speeds above 30 mphabs light will illuminate ondashboard, andbrakes will kick in without manually applyingbrakes.consumer has contacteddealer, dealer is checkingvehicle.
I have a2001 s10 extended cab pickup.i have had several incidents of my brake pedal going to floor after hitting a bump. The latest event happened on 8/8/03 with my handicapped daughter in the vehicle.what could be causing this?my pickup has about 12,300 miles on it.also how many problems like this has been noted. *nlm
During normal driving conditions brakes routinely fail when applying brakes while going over any kind of bumps.brakes eventually come back on as long as i continue to apply pressure to the pedal. Initially thought my foot had slipped off of the pedal slightly and deployed anti-lock brakes, however, after 5 times this does not seem to be the case.i have read the consumer complaints section of this site and this appears to be a common problem on s-10 trucks.
Anti-lock brakes work sporadically, one side will lock and pull the car to that side, sometimes i press on the brake and the truck keeps going and then stops slowly, has caused me to almost get into crashes many times.*la
With a hard application of brakes, especially over any rough surface, it appears that the antilock/skid feature fails and all braking ceases.
When applyingabs brakes vehicle intermittentlypulls toright orleft, cause unknown. Dealer first replaced brake hoses, however problem occurred again, dealer then filed calipers and aligned front end, this helped some but still did not correct problem, consumer removed abs fuse and vehicle did not pull when braking anymore, consumer told dealer about this, dealer replaced abs module and valve, replaced calipers, and problem still exists.inside mirror replaced, it would not adjust.3 uniroyal tires were out of round and were replaced, size p205/75r158, tires caused vibration and shaking.
Transmission was replaced but problem was not fixed. Brakes were replaced but problem was not fixed.
During rountine operation, after applying the brakes. The emer and abs warning lights illuminated indicating a failure of the abs brake system. After checking with my local dealership, i eas informed this is a common failure of the abs control module and to repair the system it would cost appx 1,200.00. The very next day the lights went off and remained off for several weeks. Brakes operate normal, its impossible for the consumer to determine the exact extent of the failure and to what system. Also consider this to be a systemic problem with gm s series vehicles according to the local gm dealership.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet s-10.while driving 25 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and the brakes made a screeching sound.there were no warning indicators or friction in the brake pedal.the vehicle failed to stop and rear ended another vehicle.the road conditions were wet.the front bumper was damaged and a police report was filed.the vehicle was driven to the repair shop.the current and failure mileages were 30,000.

While driving at 35mph brakes went out, and it was hard to stopvehicle. Dealer notified.
While driving at 30 mphbrakes lost power, resulting in pedal fading and hard braking.also, extended stopping. Dealer notified.
Anti lock brakes engage over small bumps.also only one side engages making truck vere towards the side thats not engaged.

While driving 70 mph consumer applied the brakes andpedal went to the floor.consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle and drove it home.consumer contacted the dealer, and service manager told consumer to bring vehicle in for inspection in two business days.
Brake pedal goes to the floor 60% of driving. I have had my pickup in two different chevrolet dealership garages numerous times, but my brakes still go to the floor!

When applying brakes vehicle will not stop. Also, vehicle makes a grinding noise, and pedal goes to floor. Dealer contacted.
I owna 2001 chevy s-10 and have always noticed that the brakes, when applied going over a small bump or dip, will make a grinding noise and not engage at all. They will engage after a few seconds of applied pressure but by then i am already through the intersection and have nearly been hit/have hit another car due to this. Also, i was involved in an auto accident where i had to brake hard, but when i did the truck pulled left and rear-ended the vehicle in front of me. At the time i didn't question the brakes but now i have had constant noises and clicks from the front brakes and can push the pedal to the floor, and when i do there is a loud click. I have read 11 similar complaints and wonder if there is a major problem the public should know about. If the brakes were a cause of my accident i would like to know.
Consumer called complaining about having problems with the vehicle abs system, when applying the brakes fronts brake work properly but the rear brake always lock, due to a faulty design. Dealer has been notified. Please provide further information. Ts

I have a leased chevrolet s-10 extreme, i have had many incidents where the front anti-lock brakes engage if i hit a small bump, sometimes only one side engages causing me to swerve to one side or the other, i also had my front disc brake pad wearout at 10,000 miles, then again at 20,000 miles, i was told it was normal wear and not covered under warantee, not wanting to pay the dealer fee to change the brakes i had them changed elsewhere covering the cost myself.
Front brake rotors get hot spots and wear out pads. I have had this truck three years and have had to have the front brakes done seven times due to these hot spots. I have taken it to three dealers here in town and they say "there is nothing wrong, but we can do your front brakes for $300", i have done this three times. With in a couple months it's back to the same way it was, now if i have the brakes done again, i need to replace the rotor because they have been turned so many times.
Dt: the contact stated when the brakes were applied the vehicle jerked.when it was explained to the dealer what the vehicle was doing they stated the rotors were warped.a diagnostic test has not been performed to specifically determine the cause of the problem. Updated 11/16/2005 -

When the vehicle was turned off, the brake vacuum leaked causing brake failure when starting the vehicle.the mechanic replaced the check valve but the problem still exists.the engine died while driving, thee was not enough vacuum on the brake system to stop the vehicle.gm stated that they had a lot of problems with the check valve and booster. *sc

In may of 2004 my idler arm was loose, and i had it replaced.i started to notice excessive and uneven wear on my front tires by october 2004.around thanksgiving i was driving up my street, and lost control of my truck as i drove around a curve and almost hit oncoming traffic. I did not crash, but i had the lower ball joints and the idler arm replaced again, and then new tires put on the truck.over the past few months i have noticed a popping sound in the front end, and uneven wear on the front tires again.the steering is loose, and around curves it seems to slip, and i feel as though i am about to loose control.
While stopped and with foot on brake steering becomes impossible.while leaving interstate and slowing on ramps, steering becomes stiff and increasingly harder to handle.dealer replaced power steering pump and problem was fixed for approximatley 3-4 days.however problem is increasing as before pump was replaced.
While driving 30 mph heard aloud popping noisewhen steering wheel was turned in either direction. The steering wheel became inoperative.however, consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection, andmechanicdetermined that the steering shaft needed tobe replaced.

I drive a 2001 chevrolet s-10, that for the most of its life has been in snowy or salty atmospheres.so there is a good amount of rust under the vehicle.a while ago i was driving down the interstate, i hit a bump and heard a pop, and looked in my rearview mirror and there was my spare tire bouncing in the lane i was driving in.cars swerved around it, i pulled overon the shoulder and got the tire and parts and examined the damage and cause.i have noticed that the only thing holding up that spare tire under my truck was a little cable.well, just like the spare wheel, the rust got a hold of the cable and the cable rusted through and gave way.i am a professional mechanic, and i could think about how many vehicles there are out there that all that is holding this wheel under the vehicle is a little cable, no "system redundancy" sort of speak.just like mine did, if the cable breaks, there is no safety device to catch it.some vehicles are better at securing it than others.my case was a lucky one, its obvious that a tire and wheel bouncing on the interstate could easily cause a wreck or even kill someone.needless to say my heart dropped when i saw the spare wheel in my rear view mirror.it seems to me there should be better way to secure the tire. Right now my spare tire is just sitting in the bed until i have some time to figure something out, get a new cable system and design a'system redundancy' like a bar or chain holding it up with the cable, to support it.
Cargo box needs realignment or replacement.
Consumer stated the seats failed to lock into position along seat tracks, and will move unexpectedly during normal operation, dealership has examinedvehicle and was unable to effectively remedy the problem. Consumer also stated the center console lid was cracked, fan was inoperative.

The contact was a certified mechanic and repaired the spare tire hoist on several occasions. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 96,000.
Third door latch lever failed.door can not be opened.this is a severe safety hazard as any passengers in the rear of the extended cab could not get out in an emergency situation.dt
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet s10 blazer. The contact stated the striker plate on the door was cracked. The contact was concerned that the crack would extend around the door and potentially cause the door to fracture from the vehicle while driving. The dealer advised he had not received any similar complaints. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 96,000.
I have 2 gm trucks in my family. Both have had the same problem with all the door hinges - the hinge pins lock up and the doors will not open or close without deforming the body. I have been told (when i went in for repair at a dealership) that this is a standard repair for all gm trucks. The risk to the passenger is that the sheetmetal weakens and the hinge rips from the body of the truck.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet s-10 pick up.the contact stated that the driver side door hinges were fracturing from the vehicle and the doors were glued to the frame instead of welded.the contact stated that the driver side door could fall off while driving and cause a crash.the contact called the manufacturer and the manufacturer informed the contact to take the vehicle to a dealer for a diagnostic test.the failure and currentmileage was 174,500.
Cables holding up tailgate when its open both failed at same time and at same place.
Hauling my 1935 chevrolet engine block and unloading it from my 2001 s-10 pickup. The tailgate cables on both side separated dropping the gate to the rear bmper and in the process tipped the engine block into my lap bruising both of my legs badly.my chevrolet dealer wouldnot replace them without full charge for labor & parts in spite of the same (or similar) cables on the big trucks. I have not replaced them as of yet as i still think they should have been recalled.
Chevy s-10 pick-up truck.tail gate cable failure.no injuries
The tailgate straps on my chevrolet s-10 gave way while i was kneeling on the back of the truck, my knees were hurt for several weeks.gm knows that their tailgate straps are defective yet they do not warn that they may just give out like they do.
The tailgate cables on my s-10 pickup truck snapped in two att he same causing the tailgate to pinch my hand.upon inspection it appears that the sheathing was breached and the cables have corroded that are inside the sheathing.
Tailgate cable broke while sitting on the tailgate (parked).
On jan 29,2005 we were preparing to load groceries into the bed of the truck.we opened the tailgate and both of the support cables snapped causing the tailgate to fall onto the bumper. We haven't made arrangements for repair yet as i was checking to see if there has been any type of recall. I had known of the recall for the silverado and thought the s-10 may be included.
Owner was standing on the tailgate unloading his truck when the support cables snapped, causing the owner to fall to the ground. Owner later contacted the manufacturer, and was told that this vehicle was not being recalled for this defect, and there was nothing else they could do. The tailgate support brackets broke.
Right hand support cable snapped while myself and another were sitting on the tailgate last year.not sure of exact date.no injuries.just noticed article in media and thought that i would add another to the list.at this time, locating another cable and leaving the tailgate closed.
I have a 2001 chevy s10 pickup, was sitting on my tailgate whenone of the tailgate straps broke, throwing me off of the tailgate. I was suprised, but not injured. . upon examination, i notice that the tailgate strap cable was rusting out on the inside of the coating that had been placed over the cablem. Many of the calble strands had rusted though. There is a recall on tailgat straps for full size pickups, but not the s10. I believe that the same problem of the tailgate straps rusting through and causing an injury if both fail at the same time exists in the s10 line of pickups also.
Tailgate was placed in down position and weight was placed on tailgate.tailgate strap on left side failed. Oad on tailgate shifted and was caught by me before it hit the ground.ailure has not been repaired.will have to fix soon.
While loading materials in the bed of the pickup truck the cable support failed, causing the tailgate to fall. The tailgate stayed loosely attached to the vehicle.
The tailgate cables snapped when i was standing on it, after i unloaded some trash bags. I also work at a auto parts store and have had numerous owners of 2001 chevy trucks say their cables also broke. With just the lowering of their tailgate.
Both tail gate cables broke at approximately same date. No excessive weight was placed on tailgate. The cables broke when tailgate was lowered.
The support cables on my 2001 chevy s10 broke unexpectedly while i was sitting on the tailgate. Both cables were corroded at the same point where they bend. As a resultof the breakage, the tailgate hit the bumper and was dented in two places. These were the first dents ever for my truck.
Tailgate cable broke.
We were loading a couch onto the bed of the truck when both tailgate cables broke causing my tailgate to rest on the rear bumper.caused a slight crease / mark on the tailgate.both cables appear to be rusted and broke in the same location.
Dt*:the contact stated the cables broke while attempting to open the tailgate.there is a nhtsa recall, # 06v066000, regarding the tailgate: hinge and attachments.the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the vin.no repairs have been made.

Vehicle is one inch lower on driver side. Vehicle is equiped with fuel tank on driver side, and is primarilyoccupied by just the driver and as such, when fuel tank is full, there is approximatey 450 lbs. Extra on this side of the truck.shortly after purchasing this vehicle, iand others began to notice the pronounced lean in the body of the truck. I am not sure, but this condition may be a saftey problem in the future and i would like to have it addressed. Vehicle spring rates should take into account the loading differences of driver and fuel. Thanks, jack s.r.copp.nlm

No special events leading to failure. Lower ball joints deteriorated beyond use at 40000 miles resulting in some tire damage due to misalignment. The manufacturer was notified, and informed the consumer that this vehicle was not covered under a recall.

I was driving home from work in my 2001 chevrolet s-10 pickup truck at 4:30 p.m. On tuesday, july 24, 2001.i was in the right-hand lane of i-495 heading from washington, dc, into maryland.all of a sudden, i heard a loud noise, my truck started swerving, and i immediately pulled off to the shoulder.as i got out of my truck, i smelt burning rubber and noticed threads of tire alongside the road.i looked at my tire on the rear end of the drivers side and the tread had separated from the tire, leaving a hole a bit larger than the size of a softball.i changed the tire and drove home, where i called ourisman chevrolet to notify them of the incident. The spare tire (donut) on my 2001 chevrolet s-10 pickup, has a 3/8 inch gouge in the sidewall, caused by the way the tire is secured to the undercarriage of the truck. When the cable that secures the tire to the frame is tightened so the tire is secure, it drives the tire into the frame where it wears a groove into the sidewall. I am reluctant to use the tire, as it looks like it would not perform as required.
Spare tire restraint cable broke allowing spare tire to fall from beneath truck while vehicle was under operation on a public road.the type of vehicle is a 2001 chevrolet s10 pickup.
The spare tire which is mounted underneath the bed fell off.two of them were lost.this could have been very dangerous for somebody else.*sc
I'd like to complain about the spare tire on my 2001 chevrolet s-10 extreme breaking the wire cable and falling off. After hitting a railroad track, it came off unexpectedly. Fortunately for us,it did not cause any damage to the truck or hit any cars in the area, after it broke free and traveled over 50 yards across a busy highway. Since the spare is approximately 50 lbs and 30 inches in diameter, it could have caused some very serious problems. This is definitely a design problem and should be investigated. It's possible the cable holding the spare should be replaced with something heavier. *nlm

See odi 755882.i own 2 2001 chev s10 ls 2 wheel drive extended cabs.both have the same or similar problems.a.the molding along the bottom of the windows on the doors is loose and comes off easily.one of the trucks has already the moldings replaced.the windows sometimes go out of alignment and tilt out.b.the rear end clunks/clanks when shifting into reverse.no solution has been found yet.c.the tailgate on both trucks will not latch completely on the driver's side.one truck has been looked at by the dealer.the dealer said the truck would need to be repaired in a body shop.the frame and body components of the box would need to be straightened in order for the tailgate to latch properly.the repair has not been done on either truck yet.d.the most disturbing problem is the strange behavior of the brakes.both trucks have experienced loss of braking ability.when applying the brake in a quick stop or emergency situation, the brake pedal is firm yet no braking power is felt and the truck surges forward without slowing.both trucks have had the rear brakes lock up (the abs failed to engage).one truck had all the pads and rotors replaced at 500 miles.this corrected the loud rumbling sounds and vibrations from the brakes but did not improve the abs.the other truck now with 22,000 miles shakes violently at speeds over 40 mph when the brakes are applied.it feels like the wheels are seriously unbalanced or the rotors are badly warped.however, the rotors were checked and found to be in spec and the wheels were balanced.still the problem continues and is intensifying daily.the shop which checked problem called gm and was told a "pulse" is normal in all vehicles with 4 wheel abs systems.i drive over 1000 miles a week.i think i know the difference between abs brakes engaging and wheels about to fly off.i have spoke with several other 2001 gm truck owners at the dealership who are all experiencing problems with their brakes.
