1. While driving the truck at aproximately 65 mph with the cruise control and air conditioner on, but no radio the truck just died while i was in the outer lane of the highway. No noise, it just lost power and died.i manged to get the truck into the other lane and off the highway as it slowed down luckely with out injury to myself, my passanger or anyone else on the highway.2.on a truck with no more then 48,362 miles i experienced transmission failure.according to the mechanic the transmission pump exploded with no apparent cause.all parts on the truck appear to be in new condition even though the vehical is 5 years old.several of the original stickers from the factory are still visable with no sign of ware.i have all maintaince records on the truck available to show it has been properly maintained.the transmission flued and filter where not scheduled for maintaince until 50,000 miles.3. The transmission had to be replaced on the truck and i have saved the old parts for examination.the mechanic noted that the original part was reordered but had been changed by the manufacture to a new part # due to problems with the old.transmission parts where replaced with new general motors parts.

The problem usually appears in the summer, and rarely occurs during the winter. It started back in june of 2012, occurred several more times before the end of the year. Then starting in june of 2013, it began acting up an average of once a week until august. When it acts up, i will be driving, and the truck will buck a couple of times and the needle on the tach will jump up and down, and usually some of the warning lights will flash on and off and the doors try to unlock. It basically acts like the ignition is trying to shut off but gets flicked back into the on position. It will usually have a couple of episodes where it will do this for a few seconds and then run fine for a little while. When it does this, i usually have enough time to pull off to the side of the road to shut it off and let it sit for a while, but there have been several times where it dies immediately. When it dies, i have to leave it in neutral and try to coast until i can pull off onto the shoulder. If i try to restart it while in neutral, the steering column locks, which could cause me to veer off the road, and when the truck is off, the airbags won't deploy. I have taken it to 6 mechanics, and none of them have been able to find the problem. I have heard of other s-10 owners having the same trouble, and in light of the recently uncovered issues with gm ignition switches, i thought i should report my issue.

My truck slowly started getting worse. First, the dinging noise that your car makes qhen the keys are left in the ignition or if you leave your lights on, my truck would make this sound with no light on or key in ignition causing the battery to drain. Then the gauges started acting crazy, completely not working at times. Now my truck will not start, it turns over but something doesn't catch or fire. I have replaced the battery numerous times and the spark plugs are new.

The reason there is so many accidents & deaths with cell phone use is the phone & auto makers don't really care. All that needs to be done is have the cell phone receive a signal from the vehicle speed sensor to interrupt or stop the incoming/outgoing cell phone signal as soon as the wheels on the car move. When the car is parked again the cell phone signal re-activates. Come on people with the electronic wizards we have today this would be a slam dunk.the phone &car makers may have to spend another dollar or 2,on safety but i think it is worth it .the "texting and talking violations would decrease also. I will be surprised if this iseven read or forwarded thepeople that really care. All they care about today is $$$ . Please prove me wrong".

Key in lock have to move it back and front 7 times to get it in start and key comes out in start run ass lock.. I saw on the new that from 1997 to 2015 bad key switches.

The steering column multifunction switch (hazard) has stopped functioning causing a cascade failure to braking system lights, dash lights and ignition.

Ac delco battery came original with the vehicle, leaked acid ontobrake line which cause no braking ability, almostresulting ina crash.dealer replacedbattery. Please provide further information.

This is the 2nd s-10 series chevrolet truck i have owned in the past 4 years and the same problems associated with this make and model are still present with my newer one.the most particular one is the leaking engine oil lines, which is a wide spread issue with the gm s-10 family (3 week back log just to get the parts).i'm also a member of a mailing list associated with the s-10 series trucks by gm and it contains well over 200 members most of which have experienced identical problems with this particular make/ model.i'm not in any way, shape or form dissatisfied with the dealer here in virginia that has performed any of my repairs and i'm also not dissatisfied with the dealer i purchased the truck from when new.per the on-line nhtsa home page it states that it is not necessary to receive numerous complaints on a vehicle to have the nhtsa investigate.however, if action is not taken to resolve this obvious flaw in the design of gm's s-series line up i fear other hard working citizens who purchase this vehicle will also have to be subjected to the well known (but not documented?) problems associated with it.if necessary i can provide documentation for all the repairs i have been unlucky enough to encounter.i can also encourage others on the mailing list to file similar complaints here until the necessary people needing to be involve force the manufacture to issue a recall to fix this ongoing design flaw. This design flaw has cost many of us out pocket expenses and time on what should not be consider a normal part of regular maintenance on a vehicle. I appreciate your time and cooperation on this and hope we can work together to expedite a solid solution that would re-establish the consumer's faith in the gm product.please feel free to contact me for any further details in regards to my complaint.best regards, jerry kocher email: [email protected]

The consumer heard a rattling noise then the car suddenly stopped while he was backing out of his drive way.

It's a 99 s-10 v6 / 4.3liter rarely driven, 62,000 miles on the vehicle. No real event leading to the problem.right now it is leaking radiator fluid from the front of the engine block. I cannot see where the leak is directly as it picks and chooses days to leak and not leak.it hasn't overheated or anything yet. It still has the original radiator fluid in it from when i bought it. I keep telling my mechanic we need to flush or just change the fluid.for over 6 months he keeps saying its fine. It drips onto the skid plate under the engine and drips from there. Never a huge puddle just enough to make a 2 foot diameter wet spot.nothing has been done yet. Mechanic says to put kars radiator stop leak in it.i have a long road trip coming up in 2 weeks and afraid to take it out of town.

My oil lines have failed twice. Based on an s-10 mailing list i belong to, failure of these is a common occurrence. In fact, after 1 week of buying this truck new, i noticed the oil lines were leaking.

Tsb #030601024a -- rattle noise in engine.(nhtsa id #10004301, march 01 2004)#6 rod cap stretched, causing bearing to fail.also other bearings began to fail.possibly due to coolant leak from intake manifold gasket or just very defective part - mechanic unsure this of a vehicle that is properly (sometimes overly) maintained.have all service records to prove it.even mechanics commented on upkeep of vehicle.service facility refuses to make repairs - trying to force complete engine replacement even though crank journals can be polished, new bearings can be put in and rod can be replaced.basically they and gm are looking for a big payday - they are sadly mistaken.i have had nothing but problems with this vehicle, with each repair becoming more and more expensive.i now have to get rid of the truck and have financial hardship due to the costly repairs.the sad part about this is gm does not stand behind their products / services, a recall should have been done for this problem as it is very common to their engine families, similar to the piston slap issue with thetruck ls-series of engines.

Engine rattles due to balance shaft between 1800 and 2000 rpms, replace with timing tensioner kit. Gm has a fix for this with a tsb number and all, but will only fix vehicles with original 3 year 36,000 mile warranty. They literally invented a part to install that should have been installed from the factory due to overwhelming complaints. I was under my gm 5 year 75,000 mile warranty and they even had my engine apart rebuilding under warranty and would not install the new timing chaintensioner to eliminate rattle. The rattle indicates meteal on metal contact, and eventual wear. I had a warranty, and they would not fix it. Very frustrating. We ended up buying a toyota tacoma for my wife, thus ending any future purchases with gm. I still have truck, and may pursue this in court. It basicaly affects every 4.3l eqipped gm vehicle, so they only pick and choose who to fix. It is hot or miss at some dealers according to other owners.

The transmission did not shift into gear. It felt as if the gear wasin neutral, consumer was informedthat water and transmission fluid came out of the transmission breather which caused the fluid to turn pink, and the transmission needed to be replaced.also the engine stalled on occasions.

Oil pan gasket failed.nlm

The contact owns a 1999 chevrolet s-10.while the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed thick rust dripping from the engine of the vehicle.he took the vehicle to a service mechanic and was informed that the intake manifolds were rusted out, as well as the water pump, radiator, and all of the hoses.the vehicle has not been serviced for the failures and has not been diagnosed by the dealer.the current mileage was 104,636 and failure mileage was 63,000.

While driving at any speed vehicle would intermittently stall. Consumer would coast to a safe area, and after a few minutes, vehicle would start up like nothing ever was wrong.

Defective balancing shaft make a horrible noise which sounds like the engine is going to drop.dealer does not have a fix for the "noise".please provide further information.

While traveling at 30mph, engine will stay at mid-idle (2500rpm) and not go down to 900rpm until completely stopped.has caused a run-a-way engine once.

While drivingengine stalls and sometimes cuts back on. Dealer can't duplicate the problem.

Dealer has replaced fuel pump, 4 cat converter sets, o2 sensors, vcm computer under warranty and vehicle still stalls randomly.dt

Vehicle experiences hard start at times and pops back.nlm

The engine races at 2000 and 2500 rpm's in slow traffic and parking lots, it will not begin to rev down unless vehicle comes to a complete stop (truck runs away).nlm

Aftervehicle has been driven and then parked the engine will not turn over, even with all the power on. Dealer can't find the solution.

While driving 30-35 mph, a fire started in the engine compartment.dealer and manufacturer were notified.the engine had already stopped and vehicle was coasting when the fire became evident.the brakes were non-funtional, consumer stopped the vehicle by means of emergency brake.truck was consumed and totally engulfed in about five minutes.total loss.*scc

Vehicle been experiencing ongoing / intermittent problem with engine stalling while driving at any speed. Dealer notified, and some repairs were made. But dealer informedconsumer that there is no guarantee that the problem will not reoccur. Seeking help in this matter from nhtsa.

Vehicle cuts off constantly, and no one can find cause.

Dealer has replaced fuel pump, 4 cat converter sets, o2 sensors, vcm computer under warranty and vehicle still stalls randomly.dt

Exhaust systems is rubbing a frame. If a hole develops in exhaust pipe, carbon monoxide could enter cab area.

Whileair conditioner was on/off grey smoke came of out of the vents.dealershipwas aware of the problem, but did not resolve. The problem.

8/9/00 a/c froze-up causing serpentine belt to catch on fire under hood.8/20/00 speed control set at 63mph, within 2 miles speed was 85mph down curved hill.unable to disable speed control with brake pedal.did not want to turn off ignition as steering was needed. Used brakes to slow vehicle until straight uphill area which heated up rotors extensively.believe it was caused by fire of serpentine belt @ a/c.

Consumerstated that when he put onair conditioner it blew out a smelly fumes, like cleaning fluid. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer, and dealer toldconsumer that these fumes were coming from a burnt out heating coil. Consumer went to a doctor after smelling these fumes, and was told that he had developed a viral blood condition after coming in contact with some type of toxic fumes.

The stock radio/cassette stopped producing sound out of my right speakers.the repair was covered under warranty.currently the cassette player wants to play all of my cassettes backwards.it can eventually be coaxed to play them correctly, but it would be nice to have devices work as they are supposed to.truck is out of warranty & i will not pay to have the same crappy piece of equipment installed again.will go aftermarket. *nlm

The cable that holds the spare tire to the underbody near the rear of the truck box broke.fortunately, the truck was parked in my garage and i found the spare tire on the floor under the truck.if the cable holding the spare tire had broken while driving, the spare tire would have been a serious hazard to traffic following me.i have never used the spare tire hoist assembly.the cable that holds the spare tire broke for no apparent reason.

While drivingdesign decal would come off the hood & fly onto the windshield on driver's side, causing the driver to have an obstructed view of the road. Would pull off to side of road & remove decal. Took vehicle to dealership & nothing could be done about decal coming off. Speed played no part concerning decal coming off. Owner upset.

It would contribute to highway safety if automobile manufacturers would omit the parking light switchon vehicles.

Exterior brake light lens, located over the back window of the cab, was noticed to have melted.lens was melted inward toward the two light bulbs.one bulb was not working, having cracked, the other bulb was still working.the lens was melted so that two holes were completely through the thick plastic and the plastic had dripped onto the bulbs and fixture.the lens has been removed and i am attempting to contact a dealer to check electrical circuit and proper voltage generated at the light fixture.the lens and bulbs will need to be replaced.

Headlight relay burned out causing the headlights to fail.*et

While driving the left headlight goes out without warning. Sometimes it comes back on. Dealer fixed problem.

Daytime running lights do not work. I've had it back to 2 different dealers twice and called chevrolet in detroit twice. They fixed it once and it lasted from 10/26/99 to 11/04/99. When i brought it back they said..."no repair available at this time." detroit gave me the same bull and said they would call me when a repair was available. That was on 11/29/99 and i called again on 03/02/99 and was again told to wait for a call. I took it back to the original dealer on 06/01/2000 and they said they couldn't fix it. They said they could turn the daytime running lights on with the hand held computer and they worked but the truck computer was programmed to turn them off. I ask to simply reprogram the computer but they said they couldn't do that and that i should wait for a repair notice from detroit. I'll be 55 yrs old in oct. And i'm afraid i don't have enough years left in my lifetime to get that repair call from gm. I plan on living to be pretty old too! i have copies of all the documentation from the dealers and the file # from detroit.#990 586 342 can you help me please? i think the daytime running lights are important and should work. Gm doesn't really seem to give two hoots. The truck will be out of warrenty pretty soon and then i'll really never be able to get it fixed. Thanks for listening!ally.

Truck refuses to start when engina/outside temp is warm-dealer states fuel pump not putting out sufficient flow-car will start 10 minutes after failed attempt-dealer wants approx.1000.00 dollars to replace fuel pump on this vehicle, with no guarantees this is the problem.prblem is similar to others found on your complaint posts.

Previous complaint of no start condition-dealer suggests new fuel pump at an estimated cost of 1000.00. I have determined that fix relates to a faulty gas cap. It puts the fuel system in a deep vacuum on a hot or warm restart, this part cost 6.60 at the local parts store. I can't believe that the dealer overlooked this and charged me 72.00 for a fuel pressure test and then tried to sell me a 1000.00 job by shotgunning in a part!

1999 chevrolet s10. Consumer states that he had a fuel pump replaced after the original failed. The replacement part failed after less than a year.the consumer also stated the second fuel pump was defective.the consumer is requesting reimbursement for the second defective fuel pump.

Two foldcomplaint about the same part.third door handle on ext cab chevrolet s-10 broke off in my hand.since i purchased the truck the third door handle would depress but wouldn't open the door.it partially unlatches, but won't open until i bump the door to secure the latch, then repeat the process a second time.the repair was covered under warranty, but the handle will still only open the door about 50% of the time & feels as though it could break off in my hand every time i use it.i was informed this is a common problem with this make of vehicle. *nlm

Rear driver's side door handle had been replaced three times.also, driver's recliner lever broke off, causing the seat not to adjust.

I have had to replace the third door handle twice now on my 1999 chevy s-10.i have also had to replace the driver's seat reclinder handle twice.i feel that this is a matter that needs to be researched more.due to these recurrant problems are a defalt.the handles seem to be "snapping" of with no warning, and i feel that they are unsafe.

Speedometer would drop to zero & then go back to 50. Also, brake pedal would pulsate, and abs light came on/transmissionstuck in one gear when shifting. Took to dealer & had problems repaired. All problems were intermittent andnot readily duplicated. Since repairs, the problems have returned.

Yes my engine light came on and it said service engine soon. So i took it to a michanic and had it checked and it came up the transmission was having issues is there anything or help i can get to replace it?

Vehicle stopped on interstate rt. 81 nearest exit altmar, ny.transmission ceased.

General motors transmission failure.4l60e transmission started having trouble before 50,000 miles. In the shop now.

1) one morning, i got to work and opened the 3rd door to get my work related items out.after work when i was going home, the 3rd door would not open.the handle would move, but would not open the door.hertiage said that the bolts were not tightened correctly at the factory.on 23 july, this problem was repaired.2)when i have the air conditioning on, the automatic transmission does not shift smoothly.it sounds as if the engine is being maxed out.it takes longer for the transmission to "kick in".to me, it doesn't sound right.thank you!

A check engine soon service light on the dash board came on.i had it checked and found out the code was 1870, a transmission code.i called several transmission shops and they all stated that the problem is generally the aluminum valve body has worn and needs to have a steel sleeve repair kit installed.it cost me $265.i believe this is a design flaw and should be looked into.just call any of the transmission shops and see how many of the valve bodies have been replaced on the 1999 chevy s-10.mine is an automatic with a 4 cylinder engine.

The transmission did not shift into gear. It felt as if the gear wasin neutral, consumer was informedthat water and transmission fluid came out of the transmission breather which caused the fluid to turn pink, and the transmission needed to be replaced.also the engine stalled on occasions.

This is pathetic...i have a 1999 chevy s-10 e-cab 4cyl automatic.pulled out of the driveway, and the truck started to shake something fierce.the transmission went out...i only have 3 gears and can't go above 40mph before i have nothing.the truck only has 64000 miles on it...and of course the extended warranty i bought is out...thanks gm.seems this is all to common from all the mechanics i've talked to on this type of vehicle.now i'm looking at a minimum of $1200, and that's only because it's a friend of a friend.how can they not make a vehicle these days that doesn't last 100,000 miles?guess they figured it out in japan...here in america they think about the almighty bottom dollar...not giving the cusumer a great car to buy...at least one that lasts.

Automatic transmission failed.the truck has only 45000 miles on it and its transmission is already burned out.it will cost min. $1500 to correct.we had only purchased it 6 weeks before it failed.the warranty was already over.gears started to slip, then car stopped dead on main road.

Wife was driving the vehicle and transmission failed without warning (disengaged and lost power).this happened on a busy highway and nearly caused an accident and fatalities.this happened on a 2 year old vehicle with 70,000 miles that had been serviced regularly.

Per delareship, reverse band in transmission started slipping and spread fibers throughout transmission and converter.trnasmission must be rebuilt at cost of $1,350.high mileage due to daily commute of 150 miles.it does not seem right that reverse gear of transmission should wear out at 58,000 miles.

I have a 99 s-1o extreme i have had it for about 3 years now. It only has 43000 miles on it and already the transmission is starting to fail. I have started getting a humming noise out of it. I have replaced the filter and fluid, but it still remains. I was at some message boards tonight on the internet and there are hundreds of complaints about the 4l60 transmission that gm uses in a great deal of their vehicles and they aren't doing anything for these people who are paying thousands of dollars to have them fixed.

Consumer pulled into a parking lot when smoke began emitting from under the hood.vehicle then caught on fire under the hood.transmission fluid was just flushed approximately 1 hour before incident occurred.

I had a "service engine soon" light come on, had it scanned, it was trouble code p1870. Chevrolet customer service could not tell me what the problem was...my mechanic told me had to rebuild my 4l60e transmission and/ or torque converter. Instead will replace the torque converter regulator valve with a sonnax tcc regulator valve kit. Seems to be a very common problem with these transmissions from 1999 and back.

After a previous day of uneventful use,i noticed on the morning of 10/1/02,that after starting, the truck would only shift into neutral and reverse.when an attempt was made to shift into drive, the vehicle froze.the truck was then towed to a transmission shop, and the problem was diagnosed.the 4l60e transmission had to be rebuilt as well as a torque converter, which was literaly torn apart.the tranmission specialist asked me how many miles were on my truck, and when i told him, (only 56,000) he explained that this problem should not have occured in a vehicle with such relatively low mileage.in fact after examining the defective parts more closely,he concluded that the failure occured as a result of the faulty way in which these parts were machined.the total cost for all of this was around $1,284.00.attempts were made to contact gm,but they were unwilling to accept responsability.i understood,as i explained to their service dept.that my 36,000 mile warrenty was up,however since this failure was as a result of a flaw inmanufacturing, and not normal wear and tear i was within my rights to ask gm to accept responsability and reimburse my expenses(at least partly).the service department's form letter response was "i"m sorry we can"t help you".my reason for writing all of this is in the hopes that more angry consumers like me will come out of the woodwork and create a voice loud enough that gm will no longer be able to ignore.b.w.

When driving at 15-20 mphrear driver's side axle broke about 3-5 inches from the tire. Consumer has taken the vehicle to the dealer. Please provide any further details.

Service engine light came on shortly after purchasing truck,it took several times before the problem was corrected, then when vehicle got to 50010 light came back on. Took back to dealer they fixed it again.now it comes on for a few days thengoes back off.,then back on again. Seat recliner handle broke off while truck was parked, as with the 3rd door handle also. Right front wheel hub bearings went out driving down the road. Seems that either of the components mentioned should have never happened with the mileage and i believe that it is caused bya poorly built vehicle by general motors.most of the problems began after the warranty ran out, with the exception of the service engine soon light which is an ongoing problem.

A large pickup pulled in front of my chevrolet s10 (1999) and i hit it in the driver door with the front of my s10. I was traveling at about 55 mph when the accident happened. The driverside airbag on my s10 did not deploy. My wife was riding as a passenger. Her shoulder/seatbelt did not restrain her and she was thrown into the dashboard. (passenger side airbag was turned off due to transporting children in carseats.).

I was travelling at aproximately 55 mph. A full sized silverado 4x4 pulling a horse trailer failed to stop at a stop sign and pulled out in front of me. I applied my brakes and hit hm in the driver door. My driverside airbag did not deploy. My wife was riding as a passenger. She was wearing her shoulder/seatbelt. It did not lock in place and hold her back. She was thrown forward into the dashboard. She received bruised ribs and a bruise on her forehead. The passenger side airbag had been turned off due to the fact that we sometimes transport our grandchildren. We have contacted gm about this. We were told that the conditions were not right for airbag deployment or for the seatbelt to restrain! come on! i thought these things were supposed to be safety equipment!!!!!

On both the driver's side / passenger side seatbelt gets caught on the seatback lever on the side of the seat, causing failure. Dealer has not seen vehicle.

Both seat belts hang on seat rear latches on driver and passagner side when door is closed and you buckle your seat belt.you do not realize that they are not properly buckled until you open a door and the belt slides over the latch to the rear of the seat.there is not enough clearance between the door and the seat when the door is closed.the belt will hang on the latch which allows too much slack in the belt.if the door is open it will not hang.this could cause severe injury because the lap section of the belt is not tight

Handles on recliner seatbroke.these handles had broken 4 times. Contacted dealer. Consumer was covered first time under factory warranty, but currently theywere not covered . Gmc knewthat haddles on recliner seat were defective.

No events leading to it. Just happens out of the blue when using it. This happens sporadically. Seat recliner levers defective and break very easy, the parts that hold it together are cheap die cast metal. Haven't bothered replacing as i cannot afford, dealer wont replace, junk yards don't have them.

Seat track was defective/damaged at delivery injury to passenger hip

Reclining mechanism failure on passenger seat.discussion with many people revealed this failure is a common problem with this vehicle.this could be a potential safety issue if someone or if a passenger need to escape from the rear seat.

Passenger seat does not lock and is very unstable, several repairs and one replacement did not rectify . Mjs

Passenger's seat comes loose when rear seat is deployed. There is a design flaw inside of vehicle. Dealership is aware of problem.

Dt:the caller said a truck he use to own had a problem with the passenger seat sliding forward. The caller took vehicle to the dealer twice for this problem. Dealer said they fixed it,but the caller statedit wasnot fixed. Dealer has not been contacted lately. Manufacturer has not been contacted yet.the caller gave vehicle to his son, who has not taken vehicle to dealer .

Seat recliner mechanism operates poorly.*mrthe consumer had to use one hand to pull the lever and use the other on to the seat back to get it to operate.

Seat recliner lever breaks and falls off. This applies to all 1999 chevrolet s10 pickup and s10 blazers. Both driver and passenger seats. Witnessed this occurrence on 4 different s10 pickup/blazers. Metal is made of cheap cast that breaks off even with no use. Levers fall off during vacuuming/opening door and regular use. No available replacement part or remedy to my knowledge.

Drivers and passenger seat recliners broke.nlm

While reclining the driver side seat, the lever broke without any force being applied.also, the passenger side lever broke on a separate occasion.no force was used in either incidents they simply broke during normal use.the cost to repair the vehicle was approximately $186.00 each. Gm refuses to repair the seats and they have not issued a recall knowing there is a definitely a problem with the seats.also the door handle on the jump door extended cab broke.

Driver and passenger side seat release levers have broken off.

Rear driver's side door handle had been replaced three times.also, driver's recliner lever broke off, causing the seat not to adjust.

Defective parts ---right and left seat back recliners broke in the same identical places after very little use.the right side broke with no more than 4-5 timesof use.the left side broke after no more than 10 times of use.if this was a item that got used every day i would understand they might wear out.i had the extended warranty but it expires at 75000 miles so gm refuses to warranty it.*nlm

This is not a safety issue,i own a 1999 chevrolet s10 blazer with 23000 miles and have had to replace the seat recliners three times already also the oil cooler lines on a 4.3l engine have been replaced.now i didn't think much of this until i researched it further and noticed that alot of other individuals have had same problems .i believe this would constitute a defect investigation.thanks.

Driver's side seat broke while traveling on highway lever to the seat broke.dealership is aware of problem.consumer stated that both passenger and driver seat recliners broke.

Lever to recline and raise the seat has broken, not the plastic handle, but the metal that connects the lever to the seat.the metal is very coarse & brittle and doesn't seem suited to it's intended use.fortunately, my seat is stuck in an upright position.unfortunately, the break occurred post warranty.bottom line, the levers on the seats of chevrolet s-10's are junk, not intended to last, and could result in injury if locked in an unsafe position when the break occurs. *nlm

Seat recliner handle broke off while adjusting seat while driving.problem was reported to a chevrolet dealer, who said there was no recall or known problem.seat is now at a funny position,i will have to repair at my own expense. Handle assy. Is a very cheap and inadaquate for its purpose.

Front seat recliner

The injury consisted of a dislocation of the s/i joint in the hip and a disk problem in the back.when we took the truck to the dealer we were first told that the part was "worn out". Then we were told that the part was "defective". The parts were replaced out of dealer stock due to a safety concern.

Both seat recliner handles have broken off.i have less that 30,000 miles on this vehicle since i only use it occasionally.the passenger side is rarely used and that recliner handle broke off first.there are numerous complaints regarding this problem which indicates a defect in the manufacturing of the recliner arms.i will contact gm to see if they will replace them.

Recliner lever broke.*la

The handle used to recline the passenger side seat broke completely off.i went by the dealer.they stated they had replaced lots of these, but that gmc hadn't recalled them or anything.since my vehicle was out of warrenty, i would have to pay for entire cost.i told them i would wait because gm should recall if they are faulty.

The recline handles on both of my seats snapped off the first time they were used. I took it ti the dealer and they said it was not covered by the warranty. I was told that i would have to replace the seats inorder to fix the problem... They also told me that i broke them by applying to much force to the seat recline levers. I am only 5,2 and i dont think i could apply that much force to break metal unless they were defective to begine with. I would accept it if only one broke but when both of them broke this is a little more than coincidence... I would like cheverolet to recall these or issue a repair part.

Seat recliner handle breaks off with use. If handle comes off when seat is reclined the truck can not be driven safely. I have had this replaced twice in less than one year. The chevrolet dealers have contacted gm but there is no long term solution. Is the owner responsible for this safety repair after the warranty has expired?

Seat recliner adjuster handles attach to a ferrelled piece of pot metal that is drilled and slotted to accept a screw that holds the handle.this piece of weak metal breaks easily and the handle falls off rendering the back of the seat non adjustable.several dealers tell me they have replaced hundreds of these at a total cost of $125 (labor and parts).gm tells customers this is normal wear and can be expected.*nlm

Seat adjustment level sheared off, causing problem with driver's seat.

Driver and passenger seat recliner handle broke off very easily. We are now unable to recline both seats in my truck. When i went to the dealership they said "that this was a common problem with chevy s-10" (per the parts counter & service department). I was advised that i would need to replace the entire recliner assembly and the handle, they wanted $600 to fix this!i could buy a lazy boy recliner for that kind of money. This is totally ridiculous and they need to fix this. The parts dept. Guy told me that they redesigned this recliner because they were having so problems with the old one.

While driving about 20 mph on a side road the driver's side seat shaft lever broke which caused the seat to collapse.the passenger side lever broke 11 month prior to this incident. *nlm

Passenger seat front recliner assembly sheared off without hardly any pressure applied...bumped slightly while vacuuming truck. Lever was used maybe 3 times, if that much. *la

My handles for the seats to recline has broken 4 times since i purchsed my s10 truck.twice under warranty. Warranty is gone, both seat handles are presently broke.

Both recliner seat levers that adjust recline of bucket seat broke off.driver was unable to recline seats..

I was moving my truck around in my drive way and the brakes failed and i hit the garage.after inspection i found that my brake line had rusted through and broke.this is the second time this has happened and i think it is ridiculous that something this important to the safety of a vehicle is this poorly made.please look into this matter.

A brake line failed in a parking lot as i was backing out of a parking space. The dealer said the line was corroded and spliced in a compression fitting at a cost of $222.50. Since then, there have been 2 other failures of brake lines due to corrosion. The second failure, i replaced about 10 ft of brake line myself. The 3rd brake line failure occurred while an independent mechanic was fixing a broken upper control arm that had failed due to (wow) corrosion.

Abs on a slightly bumpy road, caused accident. I had plenty of time to stop but the abs kept kicking in for no reason making me slide right into the guy. Truck is still damaged, 2200$ worth of repairs needed.

The contact owns a 1999 chevrolet s10 4wd cr2. The contact was driving 5 mph when the vehicle failed to stop properly when the brakes were depressed. The vehicle coasted to a complete stop and the brakes emitted a loud noise when they were depressed. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic and the diagnosis was that the front speed sensor low signal was faulty. The manufacturer was contacted but the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 68,276 and the current mileage was 68,326.

I drive this vehicle almost everyday of the week.when i step on the brakes it feels like the anti-lock brake system is activating.this happens about five times a week.it happens, most notably, when the pavement is dry.i step on the brakes and feel the left front wheel abs kick in, after the abs pulsing stops the brake pedal goes down a considerable distance.it seems like it is only the left side and not the right side front brake that does this.this is a serious safety hazard as i don't know how the vehicle would respond in an actual ice/snow condition.

At 50mph on a wet road the brakes instead of pulsing as they are supposed to, the pedal got hard and i had no brake of any kind. Causing us to crash thru a fence and into some trees.

Abs brakes stutter and go to the floor when applied on a rough surface.nlm

When traveling over slight bumps in the road, the truck feels as if it has no brakes.i am not talking huge potholes or extreme dropoffs, but bumps as low as approximately. 2 to 3 inches.the problem happens most often near my home traveling at 35 mph, using the brakes to slow to around 28 mph when i hit the 2 to 3 inch bump.at this point the truck starts coasting and the brake pedal is stiff, approximately. 10 feet past clearing the bump the braking is restored. I don't know if this is normal for abs.*nlm

Whenbrakes are applied vehicle fails to stop.abs system reacts too quickly. Speed is not a factor. Would happen on slippery roads. It would be worse when vehicle is in 4-wd and not in 2-wd. Taking vehicle to dealership to have the brakes checked.

Ac delco battery came original with the vehicle, leaked acid ontobrake line which cause no braking ability, almostresulting ina crash.dealer replacedbattery. Please provide further information.

While driving over a railroad track braking system malfunctioned, causing no braking ability which mayresult in a crash.dealer cannot determine the cause of the problem. Please provide further information.

When ever the brakes are applied, the vehicle would go into a slide. Stopping distance is extended due to sliding. Have been to dealer 3 times for brake failue. Mechanic informed owner its an abs braking system that has worn. Had to replace the entire abs braking system.

Abs system experienced extended stopping distances on bumpy road surfaces, resulting in rear end collision (minor damages). Mjs

Anti lock brakes malfunctioning. They activate at low speeds on dry pavement.

When brakes are applied in a sudden stop, the abs will engage, and causes severe extented stopping distance.the dealer and the manufacturer were not notified at this time.the consumer states that when the brakes are appliedon bumpy or slick roads, the abs disengages the vehicles brakes.the brake pedal must be released and re-applied to re-engage the brakes.the vehicle was wrecked due to defective abs brakes on a on smooth road, on bumpy roads at 15 mph the vehicle takes 25 feet to stop.*scc

I have a 1999 chevrolet s-10 pickup, extended cab, 4wd, zr2. When i purchased the vehicle used with approximately 70,000 mi. It was exhibiting the same premature abs lock up at low speeds, causing the vehicle to have unpredictable stopping distances, as the gm full size trucks included in the recent recall. I took the vehicle to a local gm dealer to have it diagnosed. The dealership determined that it was the passenger side, front abs wheel speed sensor. However, currently gm light duty trucks are not included in this recall. I feel that this may be of concern as i am sure i am not the only one with a light duty truck that has exhibited this type of dangerous vehicle behavior. I hope that the recall is revised to include all gm trucks including light duty ones such as mine. I had several close calls at gas stations, traffic lights and pedestrian crossings because of this. Your attention in this matter is greatly needed and appreciated. Because i have not had the vehicle serviced yet i placed the number "1" in the "number of failures column" of this form.

1999 chevrolet s-10 truck with 4cylinder engine, brakes fail in panic stop situation immediately following initial acceleration after a stop. Result is loss of power brakes and extended stopping distance causing possible incidents.

While driving home consumer suddenly lost steering, vehicle was unable to immediately stop which caused him to hit a garbage container that was then pushed against a tree which finally stopped his vehicle, the vehicle was towed in and was determined that a new steering knuckle was needed, but consumer was advised that it would not be replaced under warranty because the dealership states that by vehicle being in an accident that is what caused the damage to the steering knuckle (mother on behalf of son)

While drivingvehicle suddenly took a hard turn into the curve and onto a parking lot.vehicle was uncontrollable. Tookvehicle to dealer, and dealer replaced a broken tie rod.please provide any further information.

Tailgate cable failure on my 1999 chevrolet s-10for the second time in five years, the tailgate cables have snapped on my 1999 s-10.this is particularly distressing, since it happens when loading or unloading the truck, or when someone is sitting or standing on the tailgate, causing property damage to the truck or the person on the tailgate.

The contact owns a 1999 chevrolet s10. While the vehicle was parked, the contact attempted to open the rear tailgate and suddenly the cable broke.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the tailgate cable was replaced. The failure recurred approximately six years later. The vehicle was in the process of being repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 65,000. The vin was unavailable.

The contact owns a 1999 chevrolet s10. The contact stated that he noticed that the spare tire became detached from the vehicle. The contact inspected the vehicle and found that the spare tire cable had fractured prematurely. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 60,620.

Upon opening tailgate and without any indication tail cablesbroke, causing tailgate to drop. *mr

I own a 1999 chevrolet s-10 4x4. On wed dec the 15th both my tailgate cables broke in half. I was putting some extra sets of wheels in the back. When i set the wheel on the tailgate the tailgate cables snapped. No one was hurt and there is some minor damage to my tailgate. I am glad no one was riding on the tailgate or it didn't happen while driving. It looks like they had rusted out and just let loose. I never even knew they were rusting out.

Both wire cables to the rear tailgate of my 1999 s-10 pickup failed at the same time and the tailgate dropped tothe rear bumper and i fell off the truck.cables were rusted out at the same places were the plastic coating had cracked.

Loading a clothes dryer when tailgate cables broke, no injuries were noted.

I bought a 1999 chevrolets10 pickup ,and was in the process of replacing a broken tailgate cable, when i came across a recall for 2000-2004 s10 pickups with a similar problem.from the sounds of it the problem with my s10was consistent with the description of the recall with the cable rusting through.

A rusted tailgate cable on a 1999 s-10 zr2 chevrolet truck broken. You cannot replace just the cable. You have to get a latch cable assembly which is very expensive. I think there should be a recall. The right size is broken and the left side is close to breaking. It is also a very hard to find the correct part.

I own a 1999 chevy s-10 pickup.i very rarely have put loads in my truck.i have moved a couple of times since i bought the truck new, and that's been about it.i have not put anything really heavy in the back such as an atv.this past summer, one of my tailgate cables broke.upon inspection, it clearly rusted out until it became weakened and broke.i inspected my other cable and it appears as though it is about to break as well.the cable has rusted on the inside of the plastic coating that covers the cable.when my cable broke it bent the tailgate of my truck (i guess when it hit the bumper).upon a visit to my dealer, i was told it would cost me $40 just for the replacement part, much less installation.these cables need to be redesigned/replaced.someone could get hurt if they are not.i have a 1980 luv pickup and its tailgate works fine.now i can't put any weight on my 1999 s-10's tailgate for fear of the other side breaking.

1999 chevrolet s-10 4x4 extended cab pickup. Tailgate cable broke due to corrosion.other cable in fail mode.contacted dealer as i was made aware of gm recall for problem.was informed my truck year & model was not in recall.vehicles covered are for corroded cables breaking.i can understand gm reluctance as a fix for my truck is more expensive.replacement would also include tailgate latch bracket as cables end is permanently riveted to it.but this still remains to be a safety issue no matter what year or model.

Dt*: the contact stated that while retrieving items from the back of the vehicle the tailgate cables snapped off twice causing minor injuries to the contact.the dealers offered to replace the cables at cost and acknowledged that there was a recall for the full size trucks but not the s10.no service or repairs have been made to the vehicle.

The passenger's side tailgate broke in half due to corrosion. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection and themechanic informed the consumer that this part was not under recall.the consumer felt that the recall for the 200 model should apply to this vehicle as well. *sc

Defective frame.

The bushing on the top hinge-pin on the driver's door has literally disintegrated, thus causing the door to not close properly.it also has caused the hole for the pin to become oval over time.various quotes for repairs run from $180 to $350 or more, depending on if the shop will weld the hole shut and redrill a new hole.a new hinge-pin kit with bushings costs about $6, but it doesn't help once the hole has oval. If the door is not lifted to close it properly, the door swings open in a right hand turn. I have witnessed approximately 100r so s-10 pick-ups and blazers in my area that are presently using ropes or bungee cords to keep the door closed. One gentleman around town actually physically holds the door by hand when driving. I believe this is a very unsafe practice!can anything be done to cause a recall? what if it happened on the passenger side, and a young child without a seatbelt were to fall out, would that be cause for a recall?

I had just noticed through my front wheel well that there was a crack in my frame. I took it to a mechanic and they had never seen anything like that before. He had noticed that it is cracked on both sides and my rearend is also affected by the cracks in the frame.the frame is not rusted and i have never been in an accident or have taken it off road.it has 127,000 miles on the truck and it is a 1999 so it is only 6 years old. There is no plausable explanation for this i would like an investigation done so this doesnt happen to anyone else. I will be taking it to the dealer i bought it from also to see what can be done.

The upper control arm on the driver's side failed due to corrosion. The truck was towed to the dealer who originally said that they would not work on the truck due to liability issues if something else failed. When i went in to pay the towing charge, a different service counter representative said that they would indeed work on the truck but only if i agreed to replace the upper and lower control arms on both sides. Total cost was estimated to be greater than $2500. I had the truck towed to an independent mechanic who replaced the driver's side upper control arm for $473.77. While the mechanic was backing the truck out of the garage after the repair, a section of brake line failed due to corrosion (see separate complaint.)

He, in turn, informed the consumer that this vehicle was not covered under a recall.

Spare tire retention failed causing spare tire to detach from the underside of the pick up while driving. Spare tire was not recovered. Chevrolet customer service was nice enough to say "sorry i'm afraid your bumper to bumper warranty has expired". Upon further review it appears the steel cable retaining the tire fatigued and broke. 35540 miles on the truck.

I had a body shop tell me there was a defect in the paint from manufactor, the hood has alot of chips that is not from anything or mother nature.its a defect from the manufactor.also the inside door hinge pins are rusted on both doors due to workmanship from factory.

The dealer replaced the heater core at 15,478 miles, 18,611 miles and 32,000 miles at their expense. At 4300 miles the water pump gasket and rear pinion gasket leaked.

Passenger side tailgate cable snapped as a result of premature wear on the metal inner cable.no weight was on the cable at the time of breaking.no injuries resulted, but could be very dangerous in other circumstances.

Consumer noticedthat after shifting vehicle from reverse to drive gas pedal descended to the floorboard, causing consumer to lose control of vehicle andrun into a store front at full throttle.the vehicle was totaled. *ph

The throttle cable became separated from the accelerator pedal, for no apparent reason.this caused the pedal to lay on the floorboard, which contributed to the accident.

When accelerating, the throttle became stuck. The consumer had to apply the brakes numerous times to decelerate the vehicle. The cause had not been determined.

When vehicle is cranked to gear drive or reversegas pedal will stick and consumer will have to step hard on the brakes pedal to release thegas pedal.

Was in traffic and at a traffic light, consumer letclutch out and applied some gas, andgas pedal linkage brokewhile he was turning.

Left front wheel leaking grease, replaced cap. Mjs

I was pulling into a parking lot and 3 lugs: nuts: bolts fell off of my right front wheel. The dealer was informed of this and performed repairs on it. The dealer was also the one who performed the last tire rotation. I asked them if that could've caused the problem and they told me that they did not know. I aslo have a copy of a recall notice on the rims of this truck. I asked the dealer about this and they said they were not aware of any recalls on this vehicle. This could've happend when i was driving on the road and caused a serious accident luckily it didn't.. This bothers me because it could happen again, and i may not be so lucky next time. Please send me any information that you may have for me about this problem and any future information you receive on this vehicle.

The rims on thistruck are junk! mine started leaking at 40,000 miles 2nd set of tires. Mine as well did not see any snow for 4 years. The very 1st year it saw snow the rims were destroyed. I have to put fix a flat in my rims every so often which is making them out of balance all the time no matter what they do in the shop to balance them.i too am getting nickeled and dimed to death with all sorts of funky cheaply made parts in this truck. This is my 4th s-10, and by far the worst one i have ever owned.
