Vehicle involved in a head on crash with another vehicle on the road already in an accident.. Speed was at 55 mph causing a total loss of 1998 s-10 zr2 truck.. There was extensive damage to the front...of this the air bags never deployed at all the safety belts did not restrain..driver suffered chest trauma back,knee,and neck injuries.... Chevrolet was called to complain and they did investigation but nothing was resolved.... *nlm

Consumer stated that while her son was driving vehicle about 60 mph he struck anothe vehicle in a frontal crash where the air bags did not deployed.

We were rear-ended by a bus and shoved into the pole that protects the gas pump, so the actual gas station did not explode. My head hit either the windshield or the dashboard; i don't remember. The vehicle was totaled. I am still going through physical therapy for injuries to my neck; chronic neck and back pain. I suffer from tmj pain daily. I have daily cluster headaches, insomnia, and nightmares. The air bags never deployed.

The ecm went out. Also had a problem earlier about 2-3 months ago. The cam sensor went out. This truck only has 60,000 miles on it.

Same as other complaints. Wipers stopped working during a rainstorm. Have changed the motor twice and recently started doing the same thing.also both cables in the lid corroded and broke.using some chains to hold until able to find and buy the cables.will get the vin number to see if it was ever part of a recall i wasn't aware of.

I am filing this report on behalf of the vehicle owner. Owner name is [xxx]. I am a private electric vehicle service person, and have identified two software defects in the battery pack management system used in the 1997-1998 model chevrolet s-10ev electric truck. The vehicle noted in this complaint had been completely destroyed by a fire that began while the vehicle was charging at a public vehicle charging station. I believe the fire was a result of one of the two known software program defects.i had previously contacted general motors regarding these suspicions, and have not received a reply as to whether they have interest in investigating the fire, and if the software program defects will be resolved. This is the third of three vehicle fires occurring during charging within a six month period. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

My speedometer and odometer has quit working. I am sure you have heard this complaint before but i believe that gm should fix this problem for free one for safety and another for the economic stress that it puts on gm vehicle owners from1997-2004 maybe even newer than that.the problem is that the speedometer either fluctuates or stops working completely and the odometer stops working at the same time, the only repair is to replace the entire instrument cluster, which is not cost effective to the consumer.the safety issue to is that if i can not determine my speed then i put me and many other drivers on the road in danger. Think about it if i am going to slow then a vehichle driving the speed limit on any road could possibly have to steer clear of me and or hit me. We all know the safety risk of speeding of course you could look up the statistics on injury-related crashes when a driver is doing 5-10mph over the limit. This concerns me, because i have worked at a gm dealership and gm charges 500-700 dollars to repair this issue most of which is labor related. I feel this should be investigated throughly because i put faith in gm motors by buying their products and working for them. I feel that this is just something that should have been corrected long ago in just my expierence i have worked on this 7 year span of diferent models of gm, and over that many years it should have been addressed. This problem could have been earlier than my timeline or later this is just from my expierence. You can check the offical gm tsb database under many models and find this bulliten, also many other tsb identifacation companies like alldata and find the same complaints on many different models it also effects the odometer so this pretty much denies you quality resale because dealerships know of this problem and there is no telling how long it went on that way, so they deem it past it's mechanical limits whether it reads 7,500 miles or 150,000 miles and to me this is unfair to us.

The vehicle intermittently shuts off while driving.all power is lost.all lights on instrument panel come on as if the truck were just started."service engine soon" light comes on.sometimes the truck restarts and continues working and other times it stalls completely as if the key was turned off.this happens at random times and in random situations.we may be accelerating aggressively (merging into traffic) or driving smoothly at slower speeds.it is not consistent with road conditions, temperature or whether we are driving up or downs a hill, on the flats, going straight or around curves.it may happen twice within a mile then not again that day.once it has staled completely, starting the engine can be difficult, like it is not getting fuel or electrical current to the engine.fuel filter has been changed with no change in symptoms.problem codes that come up when diagnosed are as follows...p1632p0341p0335this problem has just begun to show itself in the past 6 weeks, maybe starting in early september, 2015.this is very disconcerting as this is my wife's commuter car and she does not feel safe in it at this point.

My pickup was sitting in front of my home when it wouldn'tstart. I raised the hood and a rat was under the hood with debris with pieces of hoses and insulation from under the hood. After removing the debris i could see the wireingcoatings and the hoses were all chewed and missing with part of it in the debris. I had discovered the same type of damage to my car that day but with a squirrel under the hood! i've lived here many years never had a problem with other vehicles. Afraid this could cause a safety hazard if it doesn't show up till on the road. Have not had it repaired yet due to the severity of damage & cost. Why are the rodents eating the wiring cover and hoses in vehicles?

Automatic transmission cooler broke while driving and contaminated other components within the engine compartment. This made driving and gear changing difficult.dealership will replace all contaminated components. The "service engine soon" light illuminated so the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer. The consumer had the radiator flushed at 550 miles and the engine continued to run rough. On one occasion, the consumer started the engine and it lunged forward almost knocking him to the driveway. The service manager agreed that the radiator may be defective. *phthe battery was replaced, the instrument panel cluster was replaced because it had shorted out.

This vehicle was bought for my 17 year old daughter. In august 1998. She parked the truck at a local grocery store and returned about 1 hour later. The truck would not start.she called roadside assistance which took about an hour to get there. They could not jump the truck off. It was towed to the dealership (pierson chevrolet).they kept the truck about 3 days and could not find anything wrong with it. They told me if it happened again to bring it back. This was satisfactory to me.then in approximately november, 1998, my daughter was driving home at night. She was coming down a very steep mountain (231s.)she put her headlights on bright and when she did the lights went out..at the same time all of the dash lights came on (check engine, oil, seat belts) just like the truck had gone dead. Her immediate reflex was to dim the lights. When she did, they came back on.we took the truck to pierson the next morning. They kept the truck 4 days, and could find no reason for the lights to go out. They called me and told me to come and get the truck and return the rental car. I asked if they knew why the lights went out, and they (brent ellison) said no.also, he said could not guarantee me the lights would ever go out again, nor could he guarantee me they would not go out again. I asked him if he would put his child in this vehicle and he said yes. I called him a liar and told him that was not a risk i was willing to take. I told him he could have the truck ,and i would contact my attorney. He told me to do whatever i felt i had to.he never told me to contact chevrolet.i was finally told by gmac to contact chevrolet and file a complaint. I did and it was refused.we went to get the truck to remove the cd player.the truck went dead in the middle of a 4lane in front of pierson. Would not start...had to be towed.i have filed a second complaint. I am out of room but there is more to this.

Transfer case control module quits working

Go to start truck would not start,also tail lights, stop lights backup lights will not work replace fueses and they blow evey time, i have one brake light for nowwent for 6 months with no lights in back at all, seat belts will not release at times, screws fall out of seat handle, lights inside truck go out at times and bob hook chev. Says they cannot find anything wrong had this truck since 1998 bought truck off lot new.

With the air conditioner, the relays and fuses keep blowing.i have taken the vehicle to a air conditioning place and they are not sure.with the abs, i was driving down the road in snow, i used the brakesand the anti locks came on and all lights interior and exterior cut off completely.had to stop and restart vehicle.with the electrical problem, i was driving down the road when all ny gauges jumped then went to normal.with the transmission it has constantly slammed into second gear and third gear.i have brought to the dealer numerous timed.it was worked on once, they said they replaced numerous parts on the transmission.upon driving it down the road, the same thing happened.**dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****734327

Battery experienced failure.

When the problem with the cooling system first came up the suv was i thought over heating a bit i called the dealership and they told me not to worry about it as that was nornal for them in hot weather.the suv broke down in springfild mo , we manged to pull into a shop ,they said the damage was to great to repair without costing at least 2000.00, and even then there was no way to know what damge was done to the suv.they did however give me a service bulletin which listed my problem. It seems gm has known of this problem for at leart 4 years. Yet when i called the dealerships with this very (i learned later) common problem noone wanted to admit they had even heard of it. Even after i read the number to them they still acted as if they had never heard of the problem and in fact didnot know what i was talking about.they did after seveal phone called and agree to fix the problem, however they also admit that there is no way to know what type of damage if any was done to engine tranmission or heating and cooling sytems.

1998 chevrolet s-10 etended cab pickup horn intermitently will go off and the last time in april. 2003 stayed on until i pulled the fuse under the hood.i now have no horn for use.

Note:this is a supplement to my earlier odi report # 713057, filed via the internet two days ago on 10/09/99 regarding a safety problem with the extreme difficulty blowing the horn on certain 1998 chevrolet s10 pickup trucks.the service rep at sullivan chevrolet in roseville, ca, had previously suggested that the problem was unrepairable because of a design defect. There is indeed a serious design defect. But after taking the vehicle back to the same dealer a second time -- and after filing a complaint with nhtsa two days earlier -- the dealer's quality control expert, robert potter, was finally able to partially repair the problem by removing the driver's side airbag and horn assembly on my one-year-old vehicle and using a crowbar to bend the horn assembly and air bag mounting bracket outward to allow more "play" between the horn ring and the steering wheel.the design defect turns out to be too little play between the horn ring and the steering wheel, so that when you press the horn ring, it bumps against the steering wheel instead of making contact with the electrical connections to the horn -- thus requiring an enormous amount of thumb pressure to force the horn ring past the obstruction to make electrical contact to blow the horn in a sudden emergency. The local service rep said they have had a number of other complaints that the 1998 chevy s10 horn is much harder to blow on one side of the steering wheel than the other side.the manufacturer should issue an immediate recall to have the horn assemblies adjusted to safe tolerance levels to prevent serious accidents.

1998 chevrolet s-10e pick-up.when starting vehicle, ignition key has remained stuck in start mode, causing operator not to be able to turn off the vehicle or retract the key. Only recourse for turning off the vehicle is to disconnect the battery or (for manual transmission trucks) popping the clutch. Automatic transmission trucks only recourse is to disconnect the battery while the starter continuously grinds into the flywheel. This incident of the ignition and key being stuck in start mode has happened twice within a two month period. Previous occurence was the date of april 02, 2004.

While driving at 45 mphclutch cable broke without prior warning. Also, wire harnees shorted out/ brakes are working intermittently/ there is some type of knocking noise within the vehicle, and the left coil spring had to be replaced.

When driving the truck, it shuts down during odd times. It doesnt shut down when the truck has been driven along time. It happens when the engine is cold and hot. When i mean shut downim referring to the whole truck turning off. The battery light comes on when shut down occurs. I had this vehicle to a chev dealer, the said it was a ignition module, i had it replaced. The same problem happened. I had it to another garage, they said it was a crack sensor, i had it replaced, its still happening. I had it to another garage, they said it was a ignition coil, i had it replaced, you guessed it, still shutting down. I sanked 300 hundred dollars on the so called professionals from chevrolet. Im still having the problem. They are dumping parts in my truck and have no idea what it is. I bought this vehicle used and it still has low miles on it. There has to be a solution to my problem.

My s-10 pickup will sporadically have the security light illuminate and flash when i y* to start my vehicle.the truck will then not start even though it cranks over perfectly fine.the security feature is not a help, but a hindrance.i am using an official gm key in my ignition when this happens.if i wait at least an hour then there is a possibility the truck will then start as if nothing were wrong and the security light goes out.this has been looked at by a certified mechanic and he states that it is something faulty in the "idiotic security system" that was standard equipment on this vehicle.i should not have to pay roughly $500 to get a faulty "security" system that really is a useless non-necessary piece of equipment fixed so that i can simply start my car with an official key!it is outrageous.i believe that one of the following two remedies should be forced upon gm:1)they should fix this idiotic problem in my "security" system, or 2) they should bypass the "security" system that i do not want, have no need in my vehicle, and find a real pain in the posterior.this is the third timein a year that i have gotten stranded because of that [xxx] "security" light when there is nothing wrong with my truck.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Engine misses often during acceleration and while using cruise control, consumer states problem is due to faulty ignition system.

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet s10. While driving approximately 30 mph, the engine stalled without warning. The failure occurred on several occasions. While driving/stopping the veh and upon turning ignition to start vehicle again, it will not start. Consumer has to jump start vehicle to get it going. Took to dealer. Problem has not been remedied.consumer now states that vehicle will not start after jump starting and on several occasions the vehicle stalled leaving driver stranded.

The engine sometimes stalls while consumer releases the clutch, the engine hesitates and sometimes has little power.the consumer smells fuel and sulfer, the dealer can not locate any problems.the starter does not work properly.the air conditioner blows hot.the transmission is slipping, the clutch locks up in reverse and is noisy.the consumer complains that the vehicle does not stop fast enough.the fan clutch was noisy.

Starter failed.

My truck has not failed but since i have owned this vehicle it has once in a while started with what seems like a starter drag, it will not do it all the time and there is no set time? i have had it back to the dealer twice and both times they could find nothing wrong. I have tried it after letting the vehicle for various times.....5 mins.,all night,etc.

This vehicle was in the shop about 8 times for electrical problems, with 5 times beingdocumented. Problems started about 4 months after i took delivery of it. Nearly all the light switches were changed along with the electronic eye for the lights.

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet s10.the contact noticed that the charging gauge was low and the vehicle was not charged at the proper level.he also stated that the gauges and interior lighting worked intermittently.the dealer stated that part of the wiring harness had melted.the dealer also stated that the vehicle was not included in recall # 97v208001 (electrical system:wiring:front underhood).the current and failure mileages were 68,000.

The third brake light is inoperative because of an engineering defect in the wiring system. The dealer and the factory is aware of this problem.

I asked him if he would put his child in this vehicle and he said yes. I called him a liar and told him that was not a risk i was willing to take. I told him he could have the truck ,and i would contact my attorney. He told me to do whatever i felt i had to.he never told me to contact chevrolet.i was finally told by gmac to contact chevrolet and file a complaint. I did and it was refused.we went to get the truck to remove the cd player.the truck went dead in the middle of a 4lane in front of pierson. Would not start...had to be towed.i have filed a second complaint. I am out of room but there is more to this.

About four hours after i parked my chevy s-10 in my carport at 11 p.m., the truck erupted into flames. The engine compartment is gutted; the front portion of the truck is destroyed. A california department of forestry investigator has determined the cause was likely the vehicleos electrical system. He believes the fire probably started in the fuse box in the engine compartment, then spread to engulf the whole engine. I will be happy to provide you with a copy of his report when it becomes available. The fire threatened the entire building where i live, which includes several businesses and residences. Because of a sprinkler system and fast action by fire crews, the building damage was limited to smoke stains on the wall and ceiling.however, the truck is totaled.

While being driven electronic cluster module failed. Truck is in repair shop for mechanic to evaluate condition.

This is the fifth time for the gas gauge to quit, now the inst. Cluster is inoperable.

The pickup was parked in the driveway about six o clock in the afternoon. Then about three o clock in the morning the vehicle caught fire. The fire cheif said it was caused by an electrical spark in the dash area.

Automatic transmission cooler broke while driving and contaminated other components within the engine compartment. This made driving and gear changing difficult.dealership will replace all contaminated components. The "service engine soon" light illuminated so the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer. The consumer had the radiator flushed at 550 miles and the engine continued to run rough. On one occasion, the consumer started the engine and it lunged forward almost knocking him to the driveway. The service manager agreed that the radiator may be defective. *phthe battery was replaced, the instrument panel cluster was replaced because it had shorted out.

Engine oil leak.

The vehicle had an oil leak which caused the vehicle to cut off while driving.it was later discovered that the oil cooler linesrubbed together and made a hole which caused the leak.*nlm

When the problem with the cooling system first came up the suv was i thought over heating a bit i called the dealership and they told me not to worry about it as that was nornal for them in hot weather.the suv broke down in springfild mo , we manged to pull into a shop ,they said the damage was to great to repair without costing at least 2000.00, and even then there was no way to know what damge was done to the suv.they did however give me a service bulletin which listed my problem. It seems gm has known of this problem for at leart 4 years. Yet when i called the dealerships with this very (i learned later) common problem noone wanted to admit they had even heard of it. Even after i read the number to them they still acted as if they had never heard of the problem and in fact didnot know what i was talking about.they did after seveal phone called and agree to fix the problem, however they also admit that there is no way to know what type of damage if any was done to engine tranmission or heating and cooling sytems.

When driving the truck, it shuts down during odd times. It doesnt shut down when the truck has been driven along time. It happens when the engine is cold and hot. Hi i originally purchased a 1998 chevrolet s10 used private party and noticed a check engine light on and my brother scanned the computer and found it was a transmission problem and was informed by my brother it had been rebuilt literally 2 months before purchased and was shown proof when driving highway speeds it shifted into 3rd by itself and was forced to drive 25 miles doing 50 took it to gm and was informed it was a pressure problem and was "recommended" a tranny rebuild and then they called the car a piece of @#$%^ and wasn't worth it i personally love the truck and then they said it would be 2500 dollars. I continue to drive it with check engine light on and was informed the transmission will eventually lock me out of it, also when hot it sounds literally like a tractor on excel and steady speed if any one has any answers please email.

My 1998 chevrolets-10 has a failed catalytic converter, and it only has 70,000 miles. It is my suspicion that the catalytic converter was cooked by a defect in the workmanship of the construction of the car. Less than one year before failure the exhaust manifold was separated from the rest of the system, causing the o2 sensor to react and enact a fuel/air mixture that cooked the catalytic converter. Chevroletdealer says the catalytic converter is no longer under warranty because it has been over 8 years.

Water leak in cowl area allowed rain water to collect undetected under carpet moisture barrier causing accessory handicapped accelerator pedal assembly to corrode. Corrosion of the pedal arm pivot shaft eventually caused pedal to freeze in a part throttle position in traffic. Evasive maneuver required to avoid collision while approaching intersection.

While traveling on the highway at approximately 60-65 mph spare tire from underneath the vehicle carrier broke andfell onto the highway, almost causing a vehicle collision. Dealer was notified.

Cable holding spare tire under frame has failed twice. Once on 1-19-2000 and again on 07092000. Cable breaks and tire falls to ground into traffic. Both failures at low speed with out damage. Dealer repaired both times at their cost. Concern should it fail at highwayspeed in heavy traffic.

Rear brake light burned out. Replaced and new one burned out within 1 week. Replaced and again it burned out. Went to dealer, and was charged >$30 to replace the bulb. Then it burned out and i took it back and they replaced a part, and didn't charge me for the labor because of the $30. Bulb still burned out. Didn't replace for over a year and then i replaced it and it burned out. Just recently replaced it again and it has been working for about 4 months.

I was trained by the wy state patrol, as a former traffic counter. They advised at night when ever i running into wildlife on the road, shut off headlights, put car in n, let off the gas and hold vehicle steady while coast through the wildlife. By shutting the headlights off, wildlife [deer, antelope, elk, moose, etc]., are not blinded and can see. With continues daytime headlights, there have been five occasions, at 75-80 miles per hour, i have had to tip my 1998 s10 pickup, onto 2 wheels and weave my way through 100 or more mule tale deer on highway 85, north of lingle, near my ranch. Sometimes on black ice. While driving or when the vehicle was parked could smell fuel inside of vehicle. Odor sometimes could be so strong that it was burning the eyes.took vehicle to a dealer, and technician said that problem with fuel pressure hose had rubbed against transmission, and rubbeda hole through the line.

Gas odor- upon state inspection failure revealed both gas lines were able to rub together, causing a lot of fuel to leak onto the exhaust causing smoke. Both lines will need to be replaced to avoid the truck exploding or catching fire. Funny how you can only buy the fuellines from chevrolet. What is to keep them from rubbing together again after i spend the four hundred dollars to have it fixed? this is a defect.also, faulty windshield wiper motors or wiring allows the windshield wipers to just completely stop while it is downpouring rain. I could have ended up in the lake! i had to pay to have it replaced. There are several complaints online from owners of the same vehicle regarding both of my complaints. Why is nothing being done to make gm fix these known defects before someone dies?

This vehicle has an on/off switch. After activating the switch it caused an problem with the electrical system, the horn went out.also, created problems with the cooling system. The kill switch is working improperly. Dealer has been contacted.

I recently purchased an 1998 chevy s-10 pickup in which had highway miles of @176000 miles. These trips were made from the texarkana to dallas area oni-30. After my purchase of said vehichle being the second owner i had been smelling gasoline and searched high and low for its source of origin for approximately 2 weeks and on my way home from sheveport la., the smell was overwhelming and was very lucky my truck did not explode into flames that night, i checked again under the hood and eventually underneath the carrige and found no leaks from the tank etc. I started the engine and looked again and noticed smoke from the underneath exhaust, upon further inspection the main gas line which routes over the transmission through a metal strap which holds it inplace had rubbed an area in which created this and what is a very dangerous incident and needs to be looked into, had the exhast ignited, gas was all over the top of the transmission as well all the way down the drive shaft. I replaced with regualar flex gas line from an automotive store. I still have the old line for futher inspection if needed, but others may not be as fortunate as i and would only think the smell is coming from the carburator area and would end up the vehichle catching fire or blowing up. Take this very serious and correct the defective area by installing a rubber spaced metal strap which will seperate the three lines as well exposure of being rubbed by the strap in which holds them. My leak was spraying up into the body underneath and not just spraying directly down.

Vehicle was takento mechanic for service, engine checklight being on, mechanic found fuel being pushed throughwiring and intocomputer. Vehicle had a 4.3 vortex engine. Mechanic believedpressure regulater to be at fault.when the computer was unplagged gasoline ran out of pcm due to injector assembly failure.

Service engine light came on while attempting slow acceleration on an interstate incline.this is the 3rd time this has happened since nov 2001, service center unable to diagnose after one day depite being told about previous symptoms and repairs.on two previous occasions dealership where purchased diagnosed as failed fuel injector and leaking "spider valve".unfortunately on the 2nd time they were unable to diagnose before both catalytic converters were burned out by raw fuel being dumped into the exhaust,resulting in a very large repair bill.only able to identify after i had pointed them to the repair records of 18 months earlier.don't feel that it should be necessary to replace fuel injection components at 18 month intervals on a vehicle that is not abused at all and has all routine maintenance.also dealing with a problem that dumps raw fuel into a hot exhaust system would certainly seem to be a safety hazard.

Fuel cut off failed,an accident, belt replaced prior to incident, however was not the failure.

I backed out of my driveway. Began slowly traveling down the hill that i live on. The brakes completely failed. The brake warning light was not on prior to this occuring. The engine also stalled. I had no way to slow or stop safely, as the parking brake cable was rusted and did not work.i made it to the bottom of the hill. Ended up driving off of a small embankment causing damage to the front bumper and other external areas in the front. The hood and driver side door are no longer sealing very good.a repair shop had to replace much of the brake lines due to failure caused by rust.the mechanic also found fuel line damage due to rust and replace them as well. I could have easily been injured or died that day, or have caused injury or death. Why has chevrolet not been required correct these problems?

The drivers side seat does not lock into place, when you stop suddenly, the seat slams forward.(could cause an accident) also both seat adjuster handles have broken off.(cheap plastic) can no longer adjust seats they are stuck in position.also, third door latch (also plastic ) broke off can no longer open third door.

I owned an s-10 regular cab for 10 years before this s-10 and never had to slam that door to secure it.i have seen other s-10 extended cabs on the interstate with the driver's door ajar so this must be a wide spread problem.i have also seen other reports of it on your site here. I think it is very unsafe to have the driver's door not securely latched in case of an accident.there must be a fix for this.

Left front door does not close properly. Dealer replaced latch assemblyand door does not latch properly. In addition, passenger's door is hitting the third door and causing metal to hit metal.

I was pulling into a mcdonald's drive-through lane and the silicone isolation mount where the top part of the transmission shift lever meets the bottom part coming up from the transmission broke loose. It is not possible to shift with the top lever now. It is possible to shift using the short bottom piece coming up from the transmission, but it is not easy to do so.

Hi i originally purchased a 1998 chevrolet s10 used private party and noticed a check engine light on and my brother scanned the computer and found it was a transmission problem and was informed by my brother it had been rebuilt literally 2 months before purchased and was shown proof when driving highway speeds it shifted into 3rd by itself and was forced to drive 25 miles doing 50 took it to gm and was informed it was a pressure problem and was "recommended" a tranny rebuild and then they called the car a piece of @#$%^ and wasn't worth it i personally love the truck and then they said it would be 2500 dollars. When you drive the truck for approx 1 hour, the transmission goes into high gear and will not come out until it cool down. It throws a cel lamp. When you stop with the transmission warm, it shifts very hard from 1st to second.

I have a 1998 chevy s-10 extended cab truck that i have owned since 1999 and bought new.i have had to replace the clutch 1.050 part number 15723124 twice on the drivers side and now the passenger side clutch will need to be replaced.the problem is that the metal rod that the plastic handle screws into breaks.i do not use excessive force on this handle...the metal that is used in the connecting rod looks to have air bubbles in it and is cheaply forged.i have had to pay $129 to have this repaired the last time(2nd time), the first time it was covered under warranty.i will be having to pay another $129 to have the passenger side clutch replaced due to the failure of a piece that is at cost worth $5.00.

The slave cylinder fails and the clutch will no longer disengage (but it is intermitent at first). This can occur while in gear and the vehicle will have to be shut off or yanked out of gear to stop.this happend to me while i was backing up and i wound up going right over a curb just missing the car parked behind me.

I have brought my truck into sewell cadilac to have it check "several time"and i keep getting the same ruin around. I told them that i hear a grinding noise like "metal to metal"and i have been concerned that it was the clutch plate. This has been happening for almost two years now, and they tell me that they can not find anything wrong. They said they don't hear any noise, and they aren't going to go into the transmission to check it out. I have had both seat handles replaced because they have just sheared off at the metal, and they are both starting to get difficult to use again. I don't think it will be much longer before they break again.

The drivers side seat recliner arm continues to snap off. It breaks off at the steel itself and not on the plastic. I have brought it back to the dealership 3 times to be repaired. I also contacted chevrolet they feel this does not warrant a new seat. This can be a safety hazard if someone adjusts the seat and this piece breaks it makes it dangerous to drive the vehicle.

While driving at about 35 mph, consumer hit brakes suddenly and passenger's seat slid foward, causing the passenger to hit head on dash. Consumer feels this is a unsafe condition. I have a passenger seat which will not lock in any position except fully back and will only lock by being slammed into this position.if seat is not locked into this position it will slide forward or backwards freely depending on themotion of the vehicle . Many attempts were made to correct this problem by the dealership, but all efforts have been futile. Now they and chevrolet refuse to correct the problem under the warranty because of the current mileage on the vehicle. As of now, there has only been one injury caused by this seat and that was to a 6 year old whose foot was caught by the seat when it was being slammed into the fully back position. Luckily her foot was just bruised by the seat . I just do not want to see anyone seriously hurt because of this malfunctioning seat. The manufacturer should fix this problem as i have attempted on numerous(at least 5) times to have it fixed during the warranty period. My driver seat adjustment does not lock properly it moves forward and backwards at anytime. This caused me to have an accident when the seat released without any warning and caused me to hit a vehicle i n front of me because of it. Seat back recliner lever has broken on the driver side front seat. When i fold my seat forward to gain access to the back seats and then return the driver seat to the original position, the seat back is too far forward. I can not recline the seat back to a safe driving position. I feel like i am leaning forward towards the windshield.

Through normal use of the seat recline mechanism, both passenger and driver seat recline handles have broken off at an internal friction bar. My power steering system has always made a noise when i make left or right hand turns. I have reported it to the dealership on two occasions, but they never found anythin wrong with it, and now it is not under warranty. They said that they couldn't duplicate it but it happens every time it is driven, so i don't see how they could've missed it. The levers that recline the seats broke off at the welds. It is an obvious manufacturing defect as a result of a poor welding process. The break was at the heat affected zone and the metal was not properly heat treated.

I backed out of my driveway. Began slowly traveling down the hill that i live on. The brakes completely failed. The brake warning light was not on prior to this occuring. The engine also stalled. I had no way to slow or stop safely, as the parking brake cable was rusted and did not work.i made it to the bottom of the hill. Ended up driving off of a small embankment causing damage to the front bumper and other external areas in the front. The hood and driver side door are no longer sealing very good.a repair shop had to replace much of the brake lines due to failure caused by rust.the mechanic also found fuel line damage due to rust and replace them as well. I could have easily been injured or died that day, or have caused injury or death. Why has chevrolet not been required correct these problems?

Traveling at a slow speed and depressing the brake pedal, the brakes lock up and the truck slides. This has happened twice in damp weather.took truck to the dealer and they found nothing wrong with the truck's brakes.

On 08/05/01 i noticed that the right front brake rotor was grooved from metal to metal contact between the rotor and pad. The vehicle only had about 32900 original miles. I do not tow or haul anything. I drive about 20 miles a day. On 08/17/01 i took the vehicle to a brake shop to have the right front brakes repaired.i knew that it was abnormal to have metal to metal contact on a vehicle with this low mileage. The mechanic discovered that the right front caliper had failed, or "hung up" causing uneven wear between the left and right front systems. The right front brakes were metal to metal. The left front caliper had also failed. The outside pad had about 80% pad thickness. The left inside pad was wearing unevenly. The rear of the pad was almost metal to metal while the front was about 60% thick. I am a police officer and a trained technical accident investigator. Common sense, and my training tells me that these defective calipers, and their premature failure, cause a considerable decrease in braking efficiency.as a side note, the mechanic who worked on my vehicle mentioned to me thathe had a chevy s10 in the day before with about 36000 miles with the same problem.

Today, 24 july 2002 @ 6:30 am pdt at 65 mph, the right front wheel separated from the hub on our 1998 chevrolet s-10 blazer. All fivewheel studs sheared. The car was brought to a stop while riding on the brake disc. The car was towed to woolever tire co, 205 anacapa st, santabarbara, ca 93101. The brake rotor and all tire studs are being replaced. I have high resolution digital pictures of the individual studs as welle as thewheel and brake assemblies. Chevrolet has been contacted and has started a case (1-18936109) regarding this failure. I've asked the tire dealer to saveall the parts that were replaced.

Brakes would release some but drag ,causingrotors to overheat. Brakes rusted into the glide plate.parts were replaced, and there were no signs of lubrication. Consumer has not received the brake inspection notice gmc sent out.the brake problem was caused by the stainless clips that snap into the guide plates on the rear brakes.

The brakes felt mushy and stopping was without good grip. The gm dealer was informed 5 times and found no fault. I bought a jack and checked the brakes myself and found the axle seal leaking badly contaminating the left rear brake. This reduced stopping power dramatically. Brakes are the first thing on a car that should work, and the manufacturer refuses to fix it.

Streering wheel rattles/vibrates/shakes- is loose in the steering column. Was into dealer 3 times, last time picked up (today) dealer has seen this problem in this model truck, and expects a product recall soon, or parts to fix this. Currently there is no fix and is a major saftey concern to me.

Steering had excessive play, viring either way, the steering grear box needed to be replace. John l. Sullivan sold us the truck in that condition. When questioned about the play in the steering, they said nothing was wrong.however once i lost control of the truck i then knew that there had to be something wrong.so i took it directly to woodard chevrolet, (the cloest dealership)were they repaired it once the part were available.

Steering if let go it would take off to the right. Would have to keep steering to the left.dealer contacted and aligned truck 17 times,in for repairs 8 times for same problem. Dealer cannot duplicate the problem.

This vehicle pulls to the right and wanders.it has had a frontend allignment 3 times, tires rotated, the gearbox has been adjusted and replaced.the dealer which is woking on it (seberger chevrolet in centralia il).they say that they have 4 or 5 like this and no one knows how to correct it not even chevrolet. Within 3000 miles this vehicle has been in the shop 4 times.i know longer feel safe driving this vehicle and know no one will do anything about it. Chevrolet keeps giving the dealer the runaround keeping me waiting with a vehicle that, to me is unsafe.

My power steering system has always made a noise when i make left or right hand turns. I have reported it to the dealership on two occasions, but they never found anythin wrong with it, and now it is not under warranty. They said that they couldn't duplicate it but it happens every time it is driven, so i don't see how they could've missed it. Also, the recliner lever on the driver side seat broke off at the metal after the warranty had already expired so i guess i'm out of luck with that.

Pickup still has steering problems/wanders on uneven roads/freeways. Should feel tighter and more controllable for a truck this new. I have not been off road 4x4 or had an accident with this vechicle. The steering has been a problem since the day i bought

Water leak in cowl area allowed rain water to collect undetected under carpet moisture barrier causing accessory handicapped accelerator pedal assembly to corrode. Corrosion of the pedal arm pivot shaft eventually caused pedal to freeze in a part throttle position in traffic. Evasive maneuver required to avoid collision while approaching intersection.

The upper hinge on the drivers door is so worn away that it has caused a door seal leak and rain gets in. Nothing has been done to correct it yet.

The cables broke and the wood i was loading slid off and hit my foot it did hurt it, but luckily it was not bad.it also damage my tailgate on my truck. Opening of tailgate on 1998 chevy s10 and when sitting down on tailgate a snap sound occurred and the tailgate dropped slightly indicating the support cable snapped on passenger side.part is on order.

There has been a persistent problem with the tailgate on this truck from day 1.driving down the street and for no apparent reason the tailgate pops open.i have had this happen so often that i now use bungee cords to keep the tailgate shut in case the latch fails. I have had dealers twice do warranty work on this, but they haven't really found the problem yet.the latch looks normal, everything seems to line up, but you never know when the tailgate is going to flop open. Usually when i'm pulling a trailer, but often not.. My theory is that the frame and body are so flexible that tolerances open up and pop, the latch no longer holds.hope you guys have some kind of a handle on this problem.thanks-- jms

I have a 1998 chevy s-10 and the left tailgate cable broke.it broke when i opened the tailgate and sat down on it. I did not get hurt but i think a cable needs to be able to hold some weight.i have heard that the cables retain moisture which causes them to rust out and mine was rusted.i left the cable on and it damaged the tailgate by putting a dent in it and cracking the paint.i cut the cable so it would not damage the tailgate any more.my brother told me i could use his cable from his tailgate and i am.i think that it should be recalled as this is a safety problem.i heard they might recall this so i decided to put my input because someone could get hurt.i also bought replacement cables, but there is no way to put them on because gm uses a big rivet. While opening the tailgatethe cable broke on both side because they had rusted.......

I own a 1998 chevrolet s-10.the cables that hold up the tailgate broke on me while i was loading cargo into the bed.the broken straps has since caused my tailgate to fall off while going down a rough road.the tailgate is now scratched and dented from the initial breaking and from falling off.i have not made any attempt to fix this problem as of yet.

Both cables on my 1998 chevy s-10 pick-up have snapped.my dog was using a ramp that rested on the tailgate when it happened.it caused the ramp to fall a few inches luckily the dog was uninjured however he is very frightened to use the ramp now.he weighs over 150s so i can't lift him.i went to the local auto parts store to get new cable when i was told about the recall on other similar vehicles.i have put off repairing this in anticipation of a recall.

Consumer noticed that the tailgate cable corroded and snapped.there was a recall dealing with this problem but did not includes10 model.

When the tailgate was in use both of the tailgate support straps snapped. This caused the tailgate to fall.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problems.

I have brought my truck into sewell cadilac to have it check "several time"and i keep getting the same ruin around. I told them that i hear a grinding noise like "metal to metal"and i have been concerned that it was the clutch plate. This has been happening for almost two years now, and they tell me that they can not find anything wrong. They said they don't hear any noise, and they aren't going to go into the transmission to check it out. I have had both seat handles replaced because they have just sheared off at the metal, and they are both starting to get difficult to use again. I don't think it will be much longer before they break again.

Any sharp turn at low speeds activates the abs. I.e turning into a parking space. The dealer said it was because the tires were old. The tire store says the tires are fine. I have read on the web about others having this problem too.

Dangerous horn design.horn won't honk when you press the left side of the "horn ring" unless you exert enormous thumb pressure.it requires so much muscle pressure that in a sudden emergency, it would be almost impossible to blow the horn on the left side of the steering wheel -- even if you press hard where the horn symbol indicates you are supposed to press on the left.(the right side is much easier to blow -- no problem there.)we took it to sullivan chevrolet in roseville to request a manufacturer's warranty repair, but the service rep told us they have tried unsuccessfully to repair this design defect but have found that if they adjust the spring looser, then the horn tends to honk everytime you hit a bump.unless the manufacturer makes a special repair kit available to correct this defect, the dealer indicated they cannot successfully repair it. A california highway patrol officer agreed that it creates a dangerous safety defect if you cannot easily blow the horn in a sudden emergency.sullivan chevrolet said the problem is the way chevrolet designed the horn to fit over or around the driver's side airbag in the steering wheel. Some other manufacturers wisely put totally separate, independent electrical horn buttons on either side of the driver's side airbag to avoid interfering with the airbag, but chevrolet overlays a large, one-foot wide, spring-loaded horn-blowing bar across the top of the airbag which pivots to the left and right, depending on where you press to blow the horn. It pivots ok to the right, but, as i said, it takes enormous thumb pressure to blow it on the left side.an elderly person would find it virtually impossible to blow the horn on the left -- which is the side most right-handed people would use, as they tend to use the right hand to steer.the horn will blow if you shift your hand to the very center of the steering shaft directly over the airbag -- but this loses precious time in a sudden emergency.it frightens me.

The steel cable that supported my spare tire under my truck's body broke (it was rusted out) while driving on a major highway.i was able to retrieve all parts (tire, cable toggle and tire retainer), and no other cars were damaged since they swerved to avoid the debris.the rusted toggle shows that only three strands of cable were unrusted when it broke, with more than 90% of the remaining cable rusted away.if someone wants to look at the toggle i will mail it, let me know.in my opinion, stainless steel should have been used, since this cable is exposed to all roadway spashing.

Reclining handle on seat are very hard to pull up, passenger side handle broke off leaving seat stuck in one position. Passenger seat slides into dash when brakes are applied. Throttle sticks at trottle body and transmision cooler line leaks.

Water leak in cowl area allowed rain water to collect undetected under carpet moisture barrier causing accessory handicapped accelerator pedal assembly to corrode. Corrosion of the pedal arm pivot shaft eventually caused pedal to freeze in a part throttle position in traffic. Evasive maneuver required to avoid collision while approaching intersection.

While my wife was driving along at approximately. 40 mph, the truck began to accelerate rapidly. Applying the brakes seemed to have minimal effect as the power of the engine seemed to overpower the braking. At that point she tried to shift the truck into neutral, but put it into reverse instead. This caused the rear wheels to lock, the truck then spun out of control and turned over upon striking the curb. *nlm

Vehicle did not slow but accellerated.tried turn signal shutoff.could not stop vehicle on ramp until engine shut off. Vehicle accellerator stuck wide open. Rear tires spinning when at stop and brake applied. Continued through 4-5 startups and shutdowns and 10-15 minutes. Coincidental: low fuel light on at time. Engine idled at top rpm until rev limiter slowed engine rpm at red line. Dealer listed on complaint states there is no problem found. Invoice ctcs47068 on 12/07/1999. Has not repeated to current date.

I was driving on freeway at 60mph and set the cruise control on, but the truck continued to accelerate, even after stepping on brake pedal, i was able to control the speed by holding the brake pedal, downuntil i got to my destination, turned the truck off/on and checked to see the acceleration had stopped, the truck stayed on high idle. Consumer had the vehicle towed to the dealer, andmechanic determined that the butter fly linkage sheared off while driving. This caused the throttle pedal to remain open. Mechanic informed the consumer that the accelerator pedal needed to be replaced.the throttle body butterfly has a metal attachment held on by two rivets.overtime these rivets became loose and cause metal fatigue to the attached piece of metal on the butterfly.the rivet on one side broke through the fatigue hole that was drilled for the rivet insert then causing the attach piece to shift thus wedging the throttle open.*tc

The gas pedal on this vehicle isextremely low, causing the shorter drivers to have to pull seat all the way forward.this is a safety issue because i am driving 5 inches from the steering wheel.i have noticed that this is a problem with the blazer as my mother owns one and we have rented several others, and all the gas pedals are about 4 inches lower than the brake pedal.this is also annoying and causes additional safety concerns because my foot frequently gets caught on the brake pedal when i shift my foot over (because the brake pedal is much higher), causing my stopping times to be longer than is safe.

Windshield wipers work only intermittently or not at all. Problem is exacerbated by bumpy roads. Online research shows this is apparently a common problem related to cracked solder joints on the wiper control circuit board, a problem for which two recalls have already been issued by chevrolet but which do not extend to the 1998 model year. Wipers will often shut off unexpectedly while driving in heavy rain. Obviously, this is a serious safety issue and the previous recalls that only cover up to 1997 need to be extended to cover later model vehicles which suffer from the same safety problem. (the incident date in this complaint is a random date selected shortly after i purchased the vehicle and around the time i first noticed the problem. This issue is ongoing and has become increasingly severe since then.)

Windshield wipers on my 1998 s-10 will stop working for no reason. I have a 1998 chevrolet s-10 pickup and it has a recurring fault with the windshield wiper motor. At various intervals, with no warning, the windshield wiper will fail to operate. This has happened numerous times, often during rain and causes me to pull over to either wait out the rain or for the motor to unexpectedly restart.in my research, i have found that 1995-1997 chevrolet s-10 pickups had the same problem and were recalled. It was a wiper motor circuit board problem which lead to the recalls. I feel the 1998 pickups should be recalled as it seems to be a problem with others on the mycarstats.com message board.

When heater control knob on dash is in blue or cold setting ,and contol if off,hot air of 110 degrees is noticed in foot air duct area. Also, when control is in passenger floor position and temp control in blue or cold air area, hot air still blows. Cannot get outside fresh air in interior without getting hot air. Only way to cool off cabin is to run air conditioning. Suspect that air blower duct relay,actuator, or vent door is not being regulated properly to channel the air in proper manner. Taken to dealer and they are checking.

1998 s-10 ext cab - rear window- winter safety problem.i live in upstate new york and in the winter snow laying in the bed of the pickup blows up on the rear window and sticks to it so there is no visibility out the rear window. I thought vehicles in new york were required to have rear window defrosters!having an extended cab truck is no different from having a car and since there are more truck like vehicles on the road today they shouldn't be exempt.i could see is the truck had a sliding glass rear window that a defroster wouldn't be pratical but my truck just has a plain glass window the same as a car. This is a dangerous safety problem in the northern climates and i assumed that when i bought the truck that it would be required to have a rear window defroster.

While driving my windsheild wipers work at any speed they wanted even after turning them off, causing my wipers to wear out faster, then they quit working.

During a return trip from canada it started to rain. My wipers were working fine for about 5 minutes then they stopped abruptly. I had to stop before an accident occured. I had to manually move them and they started back up. This issue has happened 5 times since( every time it has been drove in the rain). The wipers stop at random times and sometimesthey will not shut off for up to 5 minutes after turning the switch off. I have parked this vehicle until i can get this safety issue resolved. I do not want to replace this part unless i know if this same issue will occur with the replacement part or not.

Nothing has been to correct the failure be cause cheverolet says there is nothing wrong because there is no recall on this year model. I don't have the money to replace every part and see by trial and error. I've read that it might be a circuit board. I guess its going to take someone getting killed to do something about it.

Driving in the rain the windshield wipers fail at random positions. The last incident happened on a country road where there was no shoulder to pull off on to. Windshield wipers work intermittently. When on delay will sometimes work, but mostly go at low speed regardless of selection. 20% of the time wipers will not turn on at all. When turned off wipers continue until they feel like stopping and then stop half way down the windshield. When using the mist, wipers continue to run from 6 to 20 sweeps, and sometimes dont go all the way down.

Drivers wiper control is intermittent or appears to have a weak or poor design. Wipers can be selected to intermmitent, will work for a while properlythen may switch to low with no driver involvement. Sometimes when switched to off, wipers may continue operating for 1-2 minutes. Windsheild wiper will run and then stop when it is raining and will even continue to run when i turn them off after the rain has stoped. I traced the problem wiper motor. When the wipers stop i pull to the side of the road and wiggle the electrical connector on the wiper motor and its magic they work for 5 mins and then you repeat the process. With speed limits of 70 mph i do not recommend doing this on highways, pull over and wait till the rain ends ( hotel may be required). We need help with this problem, gm does not care, they want me to buy a new motor from them, this one is defective and the say there is not a problem. I do not need to purchase another defective part from them.

This is very hazardous in rainy conditions and has almost caused me to collide with other vehicles on more than one occasion. I have absolutely no confidence that my wiper will work for any period of time. This defect very closely resembles and recall notice sent out to owners of 95-97 chevrolet s-10 owners in which they offer to repair the defect at no charge. Since my vehicle was labeled as a 98 model year chevrolet they will not do nothing for me in spite of the fact that it could have just as easily been labeled a 97 model. I have filed a complaint with gm at 1800-222-1020 (my service request number 1-120539042). They informed me that they will only be able to assist me if enough complaints come in to them to warrant a recall on the 98 model year s-10.

This is the same problem as others have listed. I turn on the wipers and they sometimes turn on, sometimes don't, other times they go at similar speeds, other times they will not shut off. This seems to be the same as the 97 s-10 recall, this needs to be extended. My dealer told me it would be $800 to fix this problem, i have elected to take my chances.

Windshield wipers will stop at intermediate times and then start back working, sometimes the wipers will not turn on at all . Gm will be having a recall that applies to chevrolet s-10's through 1997. The recall relates to faulty wiper motor circuit boards that lead to intermittent operation of wiper blades. The windshield wiper motor would originally not turn off when activated on intermittent, or full on. Now it shuts off by itself when activated. I own a '98 chevy s-10. Gm has recalled s-10's thru '97 for faulty wiper circuit boards. My wipers failed in a rain storm and nearly caused an accident. My windshield wipers have a wiring problem.when the switch is turned,they work sometimes and sometimes they do not. They often do not work in the rain but on dry days they will come on. After doing some research, i have discovered that water is getting in the wiring harness, and the device had to be shaken in order for the wipers to come back on. Windshield wipers that will not work in the rain seems pretty ridiculous to me. There was a recall on earlier year models that have almost identical wiring. The wipers not working has put me in several serious situations.

Problem w/ wiper control on '98 s-10 w/ 48,000 miles.first observed 6 months ago when windshield washer fluid was no longer pumped to windshield.replaced pump in resevoir-- still had problem.about 1 month ago, wipers began operating erratically-- either running too fast, not at all, or refusing to shut off.suspect this may be a control board issue, but current recall only covers '97's and earlier

While in motion on the freeway, the spare tire hoist cable under the truck bed failed and the spare tire dropped to the ground. After it fell, a second safety cable used to prevent theft of the tire was causing the tire to drag behind the vehicle for an unknown number of miles. While pulling over, the safety cable also failed due to rubbing against the ground and the tire came fully loose from the truck. Another vehicle behind the truck ran into the tire but no major accident occurred. Both vehicles were able to pull off the road.the loose spare tire and the loose safety cable lock were recovered, however, the broken piece for the tire hoist was not recoverable.damaged/failed hardware: oem spare tire cable hoist (failed), third part safety cable (damaged)

Both front wheels leak grease.

Today, 24 july 2002 @ 6:30 am pdt at 65 mph, the right front wheel separated from the hub on our 1998 chevrolet s-10 blazer. All fivewheel studs sheared. The car was brought to a stop while riding on the brake disc. The car was towed to woolever tire co, 205 anacapa st, santabarbara, ca 93101. The brake rotor and all tire studs are being replaced. I have high resolution digital pictures of the individual studs as welle as thewheel and brake assemblies. Chevrolet has been contacted and has started a case (1-18936109) regarding this failure. I've asked the tire dealer to saveall the parts that were replaced.

The consumer has been experiencing problems with lugs: nuts. Vehicle kept making a thumping noise.when they took it to the manufacturer, they said that the problem was that the lug: nuts came loose.the consumer has had the lugs: nuts tightened 3 times.the manufacturer has been contacted.

Consumer hadvehicle parked outside of herhome and she was hearing a noise.she had her husband listen to it.they tookvehicle to dealership,and mechanic tookwheels off and noticed thatrivit groves wore into the stator.when they had to replace brakes pads and shoes, they had to remachine the stator to remove the groves.the destruction of the front disk brake pads groved the front wheel stator causing the front wheel to pull to the right.

The cable holding the spare tire to winch separated while driving down the road.the spare tire separated from the vechile and caused several cars traveling behind to take advasive action to miss the tire.
