Air bag light continuously on,#5 fuse blows continuously in fuse block, running lights and dashboard lights dim. Have taken to dealership, diagnostics ran everything ok according to dealership.

A month ago my vehicle had a dash board light come on intermittently.it is the air bag light.during this period i took the vehicle to my mechanic, he placed it on the diagnostic and found nothing wrong at a cost of just under $100.the light has continued to come on and the vehicle has stalled twice during this time.i have searched the internet for recall notices for the dealership and have not had any success.i believe this could escalate into an accident, and i certainly cannot afford to have the vehicle at the mechanics or the dealership for days on end while they have no idea what the problem is.chevrolet should take the vehicle in, give me a vehicle to drive until they solve the problem.

While driving vehicle stalled,and sometimes would restart on its own.also,sending unit malfunctioned, causing the fuel gauge not to register the correct amount of gasoline in the tank.

My s10 stalls contantly. Going 60 or going 15, doesnt matter. All gauges slam to zero and sometimes it restarts, sometimes it doesnt. I lose steering and its really dangerous. Happens on the freeway, i have to throw it into neutral and restart, sometimes it does, other times it doesnt. Incident date starting 6/25/04 and still currently happens. Started out once in a while. Now its a few times a day. Seems to happen a lot more in colder/moist weather

Since i have purchased this vehicle, i cannot get the correct fuel amount to show on the gauge.i have been to the dealer several times waiting for a recall with no luck.i have ran out of gas several times when the gauge says i have fuel. Once on the highway i was forced off the road and into a ditch causing damage. I was placed in a life threatening situation more than once because of this problem.chevrolet wants me to pay $220.00 for parts and another $175.00 labor and i cannot afford that amount.

When pulling seat belt acrossconsumer, andleaning forward to adjust the radio,seat belt locks up. While driving downthe road at approximately20mph in the neighborhood vehicle just dies.took it to the dealer and was told it was just the battery.had the battery replaced, and still the same problem. Contacted dealer and manufacturer.

Approx 5min of driving at residential speeds engine would cut in and out as if running out of gas. The fuel gauge registered obout 1/3rd full. First trip to the dealer found two trouble codes: sp0440 & p0171.was told to tighten gas cap and return if proble persists.with full tank of gas and at highway speeds engine cut out and back in causing quite a jolt.problem continued especially when accelerating. Back to dealer (one week after 1st visit) to find out fuel pump needs replacing.four months out of warranty, but low mileage, so i complained to dealer."goodwill" replacement by mfg although out $220 for 2 trips into dealer for problem solving.

I had a p0300 code which is a random misfire code after replacing all the parts that i was told that give this code i still had the problem. After doing some in depth research i found that gm had purchased defective distributor drive gears that were not hardened properly causing them to wear out. The knock sensor would pick up this wear and the computer would retard the timing and cause crossfire or a spark jump that caused the distributor cap to prematurely burn out. Gm new about this problem and never did a recall on this. I spent a lot ofmoney on parts i didn't need if i would have known what the root cause of the problem was this. Information needs to get out to thousands of people that are chasing this p0300 code on gm vehicles.my vehicle is a 97 s10 4.3 vortec. When the computer kicks this code out the engine skips off idle and the vehicle shakes and stumbles.after replacing the distributor that had a new drive gear the vehicle runs like new again and no codes are set.

Spark plug insulator cracked.

Original and 3 additional ignition coils, caps, and harnesses corroded in a 4 yr time span.original and two replacement catalytic converters also needed to be replaced.most recent catalytic converter was so badly melted, twisted & damaged the mechanic stated that i was "lucky" not to have the entire engine blown.also, he never saw anything this badly damaged in his 25 yrs of servicing many makes of vehicles. This is a 4 yr old vehicle and it seems like a trend is established for replacing these same parts appx. Every 17-20,000 miles and 10 months apart - just long enough that gm will not honor the parts warranties.i do drive this vehicle long distances (300 miles one way each week to a worksite) but also maintain it to the manufacturers specs.i thought i bought a reliable vehicle, but the dependability is questioned when the vehicle loses momentum and stalls on highway driving, the service engine light continually pops on, & i'm paying large sums of money for towing & replacement parts to resolve a problem gm will not admit to having with this vehicle. Gm has not acknowleged this problem or resolved it in any way.a customer service rep stated that this is "normal" maintenance to replace these parts, as well as the 100,000 mile warranty spark plugs (at 73,000) which were corroded due to the corroded ignition coils.additional info available, as well as all invoices if necessary.

Frayed wire bundle caused by clutch arm rubbing against wires.

Made a u-turn and fell into a ditch.after the driver got out of that ditch smoke was noticed coming from under the hood. The vehicle burned completely, and the problem has not been determined.

Fuse to fuel pump failed.

There are 8 safety recalls on the chevy s10.1997.the companys state my vehicle is not on the list of these recalls.but my vehicles has all of these defects.and ive been very lucky i have not been in an accident yet due to these issues.ive been very lucky.but peoples luck always runs out.i cant afford another vehicle and its breaking me financially by fixing this one.

After oil intake manifold gasket was replaced, grinding noise w/ vibration came from dashboard.happens mostly when accelerating and when idling on cold days.vibration can be felt in gas pedal.repeated trips to the dealer found no problem, noise continues.

While drivingengine made a choking noise like it was about to stall then, it stopped accelerating. Dealership replacedengine gasket, seals, and the intake manifold because they were defective.also,at 49,773rear windshield wiper quit working because of a electrical short in the motor.

The contact owns a 1997 chevrolet s10. While driving home he noticed a bubble on the right side of the hood.he continued driving, and then the vehicle caught on fire.the fire department extinguished the flames.the fire fighters could not identify the cause of the failure.the current and failure mileages were200,000. Updated 12/07/09 the consumer stated gm placed an oversized 6 cylinder motor in the vehicle.updated 12/09/09

I bought a chevy truck back in november of 2002 from the j.d. Byrider store in st. Petersburg, fl and have had nothing but problems with the truck. The radiator was always running hot and found that the water was so rusty that the whole radiator was in need of repair as well as the water pump.i tried to exchange the truck for something better, but the staff from the st. Petersburg, fl store would not do it. Claiming i was locked into a contract with them that could not be broken.i explained that the truck had been apparently neglected before i was suckered into getting it and that i was not happy. I still continued to pay payments on time even though i had to pay for other repairs myself. I could not afford to pay right away $500.00 dollars for a radiator and $400.00 dollars to have a new water pump installed so i made do until i could.then, i was recently layed off from my job and the d.j. Business had also been slow for my roommate/co-partner and asked if the st. Petesburg store would work with us for a couple of weeks until we got the money together and while i seek another employer. At first the manager over the finance department said he would work with us since the last thing they like to do is to repossess our truck, then the next day i received a nasty message from a staff member of the st. Petesburg, fl store by the name of brett bowen who said that the truck was going to be reposessed because we had moved without letting them know first. I e-mailed brett back saying that this was wrong and that i had already made arrangements with his boss and that i would prefer talking to his boss for now on. No one would contact me back, so i contacted the main headquarters online and let them know my problem with st. Petersburg. No one even contacted me back from there, so i sent another on-line message and was again ignored. Then on 04/30/03 i found my truck missing, without any notice.

We took truck to dealer at first sign of problem and cost was $826.i've since learned that this is a problem with chevrolets and their have been other complaints.i can't get help from chev. Or gm in recouping my money.i've a friend who has blazer and had same problem last week and he had to purchase new radiator.the public needs to be made aware and the mfg. Should use different coolant.

Intermittently while drivingvehicle will accelerate to 50 mph and stay at 50 mph without pressing the pedal, which cannot slowdownvehicle unless making a complete stop. This may cause a crash.been to dealer 5 times, but could not determine the cause. Engine stall while driving and the vehicle would not restart due to coil wire failure.

Intake gasket burned out and allowed anti-freeze inengine oil.engine had to be replaced due to this defect. Mechanic put insame type of intake gasket back intovehicle in order forengine to be covered under a warranty.

Per dealership "there is an oil gallery block in the campshaft that causes an oil leakage". This results in engine motor failure.

Engine experiences a chattering/tapping noise. Dealer replaced engine valve guide seals. However, engine continued to be noisy.

The issue was reported to the dealer during while getting the paint repaired on the vehicle due to acid rain. I believe i was just blown off by the service person.he sadi its normal for these trucks to do this. After reviewing the many cases in the database here it does not sound "normal"in many cases i can leave my foot off the peddle in traffic and the truck will keep going. When i pull up to park the engine will idle at about 2000 rpms for 10 seconds then return to normal. At times i must also brake to slow the vehicle when the idle hangs.its really not a big problem to me because i used to it, but i believe it needs to be addressed. I do not want to return my vehicle due to the fact i do not know what they will tell me next.don't blame the dealer blame chevy cause john jones was great to me.

Engine failure.

Engine malfunction.

Whenever the air conditioner is being used and the temperature is 90 degrees or above, a loud roaring sound comes from the engine and the truck loses power.it actually sounds like the engine is falling out of the truck. The driver has to floor the truck in order to get it to move.dealer gave consumer a letter from gm, stating that this was a normal condition for the s10 pickup.

While driving 60 mphvehicle completely shut down without warningcause unknown. The fuel pump inside the gas tank failed due to defective part.

The timing belt broke twice.the last time it broke was on 2/27/2003.while driving on the highway at 55 mph the vehicle loss power and immediately decelerated.the vehicle was taken to pep boys, they stated the timing belt broke and the vehicle did have any air compression.ph

The vehicle was letting off exhaust fumes into the vehicle, which put the driver and the passenger to sleep. Thedriver was awakened by a police siren.the consumer suffered carbon monoxide poisoning. The brakes failed to perform as designed when they were applied.the consumer stated she suffered muscle and nerve damage due to carbon monoxide poisoning.

Exhaust system hanger and clamp replaced, causing vibration.

Leaking of the intake manifold

A crack has developed in the exhaust manifold.i have been told that this is a common problem on checrolet s-10 pickups.at times exhaust fumes will build up and enter the vehicle.this could be a hazard in stop and go traffic.

Fuel tank senor malfunctioned. Vehicle ran out of fuel while needle registered a half tank full.also, a problem with a exhaust leaks at manifold. Dealer notified.

1. Door speakers stopped working. Still do not work.2. Brake lights stopped working (fuse keeps blowing). Unknown cause, possibly living on a rough dirt road. Still do not work.

I have not brought the vehicle in for brake problems.i do believe they are not working properly

The cable that holds the tire up has snapped twice now. The first time no damage occured however the second time my truck has sufferd damage due to the potential problem of the inadequate spare tire hoist.

Sometime since 10/98 the last oil change the spare tire fell out completely taking the cable that holds it up with it.

On the 1997 chevy s-10 the headlight wiring is not heavy enough to carry enough current to the headlights making them dim and very poor visibility. Please recall and fix to make better visibility.

While driving at night with highbeams turn on, lights started flashing from highbeam to daytime running lights.to temporarily stop theproblem was to switch from highbeam to lowbeam.this is a very serious problem that can lead to fatal accidents!!!

Severely corroded brake lines, lines blew. Near miss accident. This is a common complaint across mfrs. . well maintained cars with severely corroded fuel and brake lines. I bet it can be traced to a cheap supplier that supplied the big 3 for a period of years. No corrosion resistance on the steel. Can't blame this on ne winter salt. My oem 1964 looks better than my late model vehicles.

Occasionally about 5 or 6 times and counting when initially applying the brake at either 45mph or 10 mph my 1997 chevy s10 vehicle starts to accelerate with my foot off the gas and cruise control off at what appeared to be full speed/throttle. Due to yoke that was improperly casted and too narrow, which caused the unversal joints to shear off 4times, almost resulted in the driveshaft falling out.may caused an accident.

The driver of this vehicle was a 29 year old gentleman, 6 foot tall and 200 pounds. He was fully ejected and fatally injured. The survival space surrounding the driver's seat had remained intact, and likely the driver would have not sustained a catastrophic injury but for the 10" of extra slack added to the safety belt system during the rollover.

While driving 35 mph the consumer's vehicle was involved in a frontal collision.the driver side seat belt failed to retract and the airbags failed to deploy.the consumer was knocked unconscious whenhis head hit the steering wheel.

Vehicle was involved in a frontal collision\.upon impact,airbags did not deploy, andrestraints did not retract, resulting in major injuries.right airbag sensor was shattered.vehicle was totalled.the driver's nose hit the steering wheel and the passenger was thrown out of the seat during the accident.

The pretensioner on the front passenger seat belt tightens up and does not release when it is supposed to.i gave up with the dealership.

Seat brace on the rear of driver's and passenger's seats went through the floorboard of vehicle due to a weak spot weld.

The two front seat bolts to the floor rusted, could break and cause an unexpected seat movement, which may cause a loss of vehicle control.please provide further information.

Horn contact and/ or cancelling cam was replaced twice.whenturning the wheel certain places have a deadspot. Also, the passenger's seatdoes not lock in place, it rocks. When pulling seat belt acrossconsumer, andleaning forward to adjust the radio,seat belt locks up. While driving downthe road at approximately20mph in the neighborhood vehicle just dies.took it to the dealer and was told it was just the battery.had the battery replaced, and still the same problem. When slowing down to enter the garage, the engine accelerates when applying the brakes.letting off of the brakes and reapplying them and pushing harder has eased the issue somewhat.it does this very frequently.

Severely corroded brake lines, lines blew. Near miss accident. This is a common complaint across mfrs. . well maintained cars with severely corroded fuel and brake lines. I bet it can be traced to a cheap supplier that supplied the big 3 for a period of years. No corrosion resistance on the steel. Can't blame this on ne winter salt. My oem 1964 looks better than my late model vehicles.

Occasionally about 5 or 6 times and counting when initially applying the brake at either 45mph or 10 mph my 1997 chevy s10 vehicle starts to accelerate with my foot off the gas and cruise control off at what appeared to be full speed/throttle. My first reaction was to brake even harder, but then the antilock brakes kicked in and seemed to reduce the stopping force by not letting the wheels lock. The vehicle continued to accelerate until i placed the car in neutral and then the vehicle stopped and also stopped accelerating.

When i really need my brakes as in a panic stop situation they are not there. The other day a deer ran in front of me and i hit the brakes hard and the abs like shut my brakes off. Luckily i was able to swerve off the road and no damage was done. Also on snow or ice i hate driving this truck because the slightest pressure on the brake pedal will render the brakes useless. I don't drive fast and am aware of stop signs on the way home. I slow down way before the sign and still go right through it as if i have no brakes. This is a great truck except for the fear i have of not having any brakes when i need them. I just know that sooner or later an accident will happen.

They replaced only one side of braking system (the side that burst) ... I tried to contact chevy to get them to repair the other side (that will likely burst) and they said "no" - not covered.

I have read of a saftey recall on this vehical with the exact description of what happened to me, i should have had plenty of distance to stop, it's only a small pick up, i know for certian i have a fully loaded work truck a ford 3/4 ton econoline van and i know i could have stopped that vehicle in time. While driving in snow/ice/ in cold weather & had applied (abs) brakes, vehicle failed to stop. Pedal went to floor. Nearly had an accident with fire truck. Vehicle towed to dealer. Mechanic informed owner no problem with abs brakes after being told tow truck driver.

The vehicles anti lock brakes seem to (at random) engage far to early under normal braking conditions causing increased stopping distances and near misses. Several times when approaching an intersection at speeds between 35 and 40 mph and the lights change, when applying normal braking pressure to stop the truck the brake pedal will drop to the floor and the abs brakes kick in extending the stopping distance to dangerous distances as a result. If the brakes had remained normal and the abs not engaged the truck would have stopped in the normal amount of distance for that speed. In short i can stop my 69 cadillac faster at times than i can this pickup truck. The truck has been to the dealer a few times now for this problem and they say there is nothing wrong with the brakes. However i did recently notice that up to the 1996 model year for the s-10 the trucks are being recalled for a abs problem.....i think that needs to be extended to the 97 model year as well.

Brakes fail on left turns. Left turns into parking spaces. Left turn while braking. Brakes go to the floor and the stopping distance is extended. This happens more often if the ground is wet or smooth surface. This also happend when trying to avoid head-on tc with person who ran red light. This was also a move to the left. I have taken this vehicle into the service department several times. Dealer cannot re-create the problem. It occurs when you don't expect it. Very dangerous.

The contact owns a 1997 chevrolet s10 pickup. While driving at speeds of 10 mph and approaching a stop sign applying the brakes, the brake fluid abnormally leaked from the vehicle. He was able to slowly drive the vehicle to his residence and then to a local independent mechanic. The mechanic found the brakes lines were corroded. The brake lines were replaced and the brakes were bled. The contact believed nhtsa campaign id number: 97v146001 (service brakes, hydraulic: foundation components: hoses, lines/piping, and fittings) to be directly related to the failure but was unable to confirm if his vin was included with the recall. The failure mileage was 93,000 and the current mileage was 101,000.updated 06/21/10 updated 06/24/10.

After only 4 years and less than 77,000 miles, this p/u experienced a failure in the diaphragm inside the brake booster unit.i have owned numerous vehicles for 10 or more years, both domestic and foreign, however, this is the first chevy.it is also the first, out of seven(7) to have this type of failure, period, much less this early.have there been other reports of similar failures in the 1997 s-10 series?if not, can a survey be run to check?

The steering is binding.when making turns there is no free play in the steering wheel,and the wheel does not straighten out when letting go of the steering wheel, this causes over steering to straighten up the wheels.

This vehicle has had both drive lines replaced, the four wheel drive, the torque converter, three different idler arms, three sets of tires and two alignments, the rear end has been rebuilt due to worn out pinion bearing, two pulleys are squeeling, the brakes have to be pressed extremely hard and abs kicks in all the time, tires rubbed the fender, altenator squeeling.i feel that this vehicle is substandard and that most of the repairs have been made out of pocket due to vehicle not being under warranty when they occurred.i have written an e mail to chevrolet service to find out what i can do with this truck.

This is in regards to a 1997 chevrolet s-10 pickup.it's a 4 cylinder, 2 wheel drive.the left tailgate strap broke.the strap is clearly rusted throughout which caused it to snap.i noticed that there is a recall on this type of strap on a gmc truck.this is not a part for the average person to replace since it requires some dismantling of the tailgate.my chevrolet dealer gave me an estimate of $90 to replace the left side.it would probably be wise to replace both of them.is chevrolet aware of this in their trucks and if so are they currently looking at a recall for this defective part?i would appreciate any information that you can provide.

I have read of a saftey recall on this vehical with the exact description of what happened to me, i should have had plenty of distance to stop, it's only a small pick up, i know for certian i have a fully loaded work truck a ford 3/4 ton econoline van and i know i could have stopped that vehicle in time. I was standing on the brakes, they just wouldnt do anything , in an emergency they just don't cut the mustard. I had extensive front end damage, and my neek has been not feeling good ever since. My father in law gave this truck to my wife hen he was no longer able to drive, and it was told to me he had the truck into the shop repeatedly for the same thing since it was new. Seems to me gm should make it right and the body collision, beings they have known about it and havent done squat, and pay for my pain and medical.

While loading a vanity base and sink into rear of 1997 chevrolet s-10 pick up, both tail gate cables snapped in half. My self and a friend was able to catch the base with out any damage to base or injury to either of us. Both cables had rusted and the weight, approx. 150 pounds snapped both. Gate will close but hanges when opened.

Tailgate cables failed due to internal rusting. I have replaced the leaf springs and the rear shocks and the right side of the truck measures 9 3/4 and the left is 8 3/4 from the top of the wheel well to the tire, the dealer agrees that it is off but they say it is within gm specs, they have yet to show me this book with the specs in it. I called the gm consumer hotline and they just told me the same thing as the dealer. ( i do not tow anything-it is a work car and take the kids to sports) two months to the day, i am having the exact problem with the car. Transmission went at 72000 miles .i know that warranty expired,but it seems a new transmission should have lasted longer than that. About 2 weeks ago, the windshield wipers on my 1997 s10 pickup began to intermittently malfunction (there have been 4 instances of this so far).in my ensuing investigation of the problem, i learned that there is a recall to fix the problem.on 9-8-2004 i took the vehicle to southview chevrolet in inver grove heights, mn to get the wiper module replaced.after entering the vin number into their computer, they told me my s10 wasn't elligible to have the repairs done at no cost to me.even though one of their documents stated that the recall was for beginning of production to end of production, they said that the recall expired 2-29-2004.i then called chevrolet's 800-222-1020 number and asked2 people why i wasn't notified of a recall, and how can a recall expire.i was issued a service request # 1-257047512, and was told that it was not a recall,but was a special policy that had the above expiration date.further investigation brought me to your website where i found nhtsa campaign id number: 03v159000 which refers to a recall for this problem on97 s10 chevrolets and, futher, refers to gm recall no. 03023.chevy seems to be using semantics to give me the run-around so they won'thave to replace my wiper module.i plan to write to the chevy ceo to bitterly complain and to let him know thatthere will be no more chevys for me.if i get no satisfaction from him or an underling, what other recourse do i have to light a fire under chevy?thanks for replying to the listed email address.jon randall.

I received a letter from gm stating there was a safety issue with the windshield wiper motor on my 1997 chevrolet s10 pickup. The letter stated this was not a recall and that the part should be replaced once the problem occurred. I started to experience the problem after the expiration date on the letter. I took my vehicle to the dealership to see if they could help me. I was informed that they could not. They advised that i should contact gm. I called gm on monday oct 24, 2005 and spoke to jeff kenly and will blechel, both of which were very rude and uncooperative with me. I asked about the expiration date on the letter, and how that date was chosen and will told me that this was a decision made by gm and that he did not have to reveal that information to me. I don't understand how a date can be put on a known defect in the vehicle. Monday morning, i was traveling down the highway doing 65 mph in rush hour traffic when my wipers decided to stop working. The rain was coming down pretty hard and it was still dark out. All of a sudden i couldn't see, i slammed on the breaks and tried to get off the road, i came very close to causing an accident which could have injured me or someone else. I have been researching this on the internet and let me just say; it was not difficult at all to find all kinds of information about this issue. I found documents from other people who have had this same problem with gm vehicles. Some have had recalls while others have not. I don''t understand how can they recall some, but not the others? i understand that on july 22, 2004 gm was fined $1 million to settle charges that it failed to conduct a timely recall to correct a safety defect. My wife and i were coming home from dinner when we encounterd a storm with haevy rains. It seems as if the wind shield wipers don't want to work when its damp or raining heavy. I called detroit and they advised me to go to the dealer i bought the truck from.as they had already lied to me , i took it to mymechanic. He knew what the problem was before i got it out of my mouth real good. He said it was a defective wiper motor and that he had to replace a couple a week. Detroit said that they had no knowledge of the problem. The company that my exterminater works for had the same problem and the nurse that takes care of my mom-in-law had the same problem.
