Tachometer is the only gauge left working now on my 2004 monte carlo ss dale earnhardt jr. Edition. Oil pressure, boost gauge, water temp and fuel gauge all show incorrect readings at various times for the past several months now. Yesterday the speedometer refused to show any speed at all.i am now forced to use the car's overhead console computer to show me how much fuel i've used and my garmin gps to tell me what my speed is. This is an unsafe condition to operate a car in.the car has 71,000 miles on it. The original warranty has expired. Chevy says the entire instrument cluster needs to be replaced but the cost is prohibitive. The cluster on the dale jr. Edition is different from the standard cluster (car # and signature) so it is unlikely that my car will remain original with a replacement cluster. Gm needs to replace or fix the gauges only. A simple solution that won't cost a lot of money. There is no need to do an expensive, destructive replacement of the entire cluster.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo.the contact stated that the instrument cluster stopped working.the speedometer reads 100 mph when the contact is really driving 30 mph.the failure occurs daily.the dealer stated that the repair would cost $350-400.the failure mileage was 65,000 and current mileage was 69,000.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. While driving approximately 60 mph, the vehicle stalled and all the lights on the instrument panel illuminated. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the ignition key was replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 68,700.

At approximately 57,000 (october 2010) the speedometer would read either zero miles per hour or 120 miles per hour while driving.it would move erratically while driving showing anywhere from zero to 120 mph.then it started working again.in january 2011 the speedometer started acting erratically again and has been doing so continually.sometimes it seems accurate but i don't know for sure.i consider it a safety problem due to not knowing how fast i am going.when on the freeway i gauge my speed by other drivers. If i use my gps i am constantly looking away from the road to see what my speed is and it is harder to read on the gps.i contacted chevrolet through email and they did not reply.

I have a 2004 monte carlo that has recently had issues with the instrument cluster.the speedometer is erratic, from observing a blog i noticed that this is not an uncommon issue.i am looking for some help with this repair as i understand that the instrument cluster can be rather expensive and since this does not appear to be a unique problem caused by me.i also understand that this repair needs to be made by a dealer, there are 2 local dealers which i have purchased from and would be happy to bring this problem to them, but i would have some issues with the cost of a new instrument panel not so much with the cost of labor. I would like to resolve this issue quickly before i start getting any speeding tickets i also believe this constitutes a safety risk since i can not accurately determine my speed.

My 2004 monte carlo ss is having severe safety issues due to faulty instrument cluster. Speedometer reads 110mph even when shut off. Coolant temp gauge doesn't work. So going down the highway i have no clue how fast i am going or if the motor is going to blow up due to overheating. Turns out gm recalled several 2004-2006 vehicles for the same issue. 2005 monte carlo has the same issue. I have spoke to gm about issue and they said they will not recall the cars or cover any of the repairs. This website here has 47 complaints so far for the same issue. Why will they not recall the car and fix this issue? will it take someone getting killed for them to actually do something about this well known problem? gm is aware of the problem with the monte carlo's. They just choose to not fix it and soak the customer for $500 plus to fix the issue.

As i was driving my 2004 chevrolet monte carlo ss , last night, i operated the steering column mounted headlight dimmer control. The headlights went out. After wiggling the lever they came back on but i was unable to switch them from high beam to low beam. I've searched the internet and find numerous instances of this occurring. Thankfully there was not an accident related to my incident.

The gas gauge along with other areas in my dash seem to have a short because it works on and off.

I own a 2004 monte carlo ss, whether driving on hwy or city roads i loose all electrical power, ie lights, gauges, radio for about 2 seconds, enough to get your attention and then all comes back on, no interruption in the running of the car, i'm afraid that it may get worse and the car will shut down , i have had this looked at by a dealer service dept and they can not find the trouble and there are no codes stored in the computer, i have 61000 miles on and we like the car, something needs to be done.this has happened at least twice a month for the last six months plus.

Driving back home from my mothers and my instrument cluster failed so for bout month i had no clue how much gas was in car, how fast i was going, oil etc took me over a month b4 i finally had saved the money to have it fixed and seeing as i just bought the car and seeing same complaints i was beyond pissed that i had to pay $560 to fix gm's [xxx] parts.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

However, the contact mentioned that he replaced the ignition module three times. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 153,000.

All dash gauges have failed (one at a time) including speedometer (which was the last gauge to fail on 7-21-08).trunk release (electronic) failed.have been told the only way to get dash cluster repaired is through a dealer.dealer refuses to sell necessary part to a certified mechanic.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo.the contact stated that the speedometer dial would begin at 80 mph and would not go back down to 0 mph.he took the vehicle to a dealer and was informed that the entire instrument panel needed to be replaced.the vehicle was not repaired, but the contact has scheduled an appointment for the repair.he filed a complaint with the manufacturer but was informed that they could not assist.the current mileage was 30,765 and failure mileage was 30,715.

Failure of speedometerother instruments in the cluster appear to be functioning properly.sometimes the speedometer will register properly and the next minute it will say 15 when the speed is actually 55 or above. There is no consistency to this problem as it will malfunction at any time. Using the cruise control appears to have no effect on the problem.i am amazed at all of the complaints registered here and there still has been no recall.gm can be reached at 800-222-1020 and a complaint can be filed with them also.i inquired about a recall andi was not asked if i wanted to file a complaint.i had to ask them if i could.every call should count.

Thought this was the car for me. Wrong.after purchasing the car the following things have gone wrong and most seem dangerous.no way to control headlights .. Driving at night at 55 mph, lights all shut off the indicator lights also stop working at random timesignition does not accept key every time resulting in leaving a spare key in the ignition and hope it starts. If not i'm required to wait 15 minutes before starting or longer.the traction system no longer works, along with cruise, or steering controlstotal power lost to steering wheel, hope this doesn't affect the airbag.i have the supercharged version, the engine caught fire and had to be replaced. Needless to say it is no longer supercharged.not so sure about this issue, however when pumping gas the pump will kick off every half gallon pumped into tank. Another fire issue?

Instrument cluster failure, loss of speedometer and other gauges.

I have been experiencing problems with the gauges in my instrument panel not functioning correctly and getting stuck and not resetting themselves when the vehicle is turned off. Currently 4 out of the 6 gauges within the cluster have failed. Upon researching this issue there has been a realization of how common this problem is. There has been a recall on gm models for this issue involving the same parts, but nothing for the monte carlo. I have contacted gm about this issue on 11/11/10 and have not yet received a response.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. While driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle suddenly shut off. As a result, the driver lost control and crashed into the rear of a second vehicle. The contact suffered a head injury that required medical attention. The vehicle was completely destroyed. A police report was filed. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. In june of 2015, a recall notice for nhtsa campaign number: 14v400000(electrical system) was received. The contact stated that the vehicle experienced the same failure listed in the recall. The failure mileage was 15,000.

Speedometer does not work, it might read 35mph when your are going 55mph, or it might read 99mph when your going 55mph. Sometimes it stay at 35 mph when you stop, and starts from there.

I took my car into john hall chevrolet on 5/19/2017 to have the ignition recall done.prior to my taking it there i was experiencing several issues with my car that no single diagnostic could quite pinpoint.needless to say i replaced several things yet to no prevail.the car would just stop running luckily before i reached over 10 mph and on several occasions while trying to turn in traffic i lost power steering.all while the key was in the on position.finally a more updated sensor scanner detected an electrical issue within the ignition itself.when i went to the dealership i was told they would only do what the recall required them to do. Even though i told them what it was doing and asked if they could check to make sure i didn't have to worry about leaving there and the car shutting off and /or no power steering i was told no .i would have paid to know,to have them scan it, whatever.needless to say after they fixed their partthe car is still doing the same thing.even when the man brought me my car i asked how did she start? he said not good and walked away. Also i left them with 1 key shouldn't there have been something done to both? my car may be old but she's been well maintained .great strong motor and alot of new parts. The starter and fuel pump were pretty much wrecked by the little electrical issue within the ignition. Confused and overheated simply trying to start the car and hope it stays running.it's that electrical issue that keeps saying yes enough voltage then nope can't have it. It's been proven not only by scanning but by reading and testing .

I was driving 55 mph and my speedometer said i was doing 10mph. Then my tac stopped working. Then my speedometer stopped working totally. My driver side seat will not heat at all. My wheels are peeling. The chrome is peeling right off the wheels. My check engine light stays on all the time. I have had it checked for the code so they replaced the gas cap and did a reset within 75 miles the light came back on. I am giving up on chevrolets. Every vehicle we own is a chevy, what's up with all these problems and no solutions???? with all the complaints on the electrical system you would think there would be a recall and a solution. When the heat on my seat stopped working it smelled like something was burning inside the car so i quickly shut it off and pulled the car over to check under my seat to may sure there was no fire. Thank goodness there wasn't a fire. I paid the extra money for the intimidator, what a waste.

Security light came on and went off when i shut car off then 2 days car would not turn over shut off for 10 min and car started normally.

I have had the car since 3/05 brand new off the show room floor, currently have about 38k miles on the vehicle -since i have owned the vehicle more than 20 times while driving all of the lights will come onthe dashboard and the seatbelt light will chime --then the battery light will remain on for approx 15 to 20 minutes-have had the vehicle on for service numerous times and they have replaced module after module -cannot diagnose problem.on at least 5 occasions while driving at highway speeds of 50mph or more the vehicle will just turn off and everything will lock up.vehicle will restart right away but there is no warning that the vehicle is about to stall or turn off --had in for service numerous times -have been assured that the problem is fixed and then it will happen all over again.this vehicle is a hazard to be on the road -as chevrolet truly has no idea what is causing the problem, they believed the problem was due to the remote start in the vehicle -they replaced that numerous times and finally removed all together and the problem still exists. There is no telling when the car will shut off it will be fine for days and the problem will resurface. Last incident date was 3/27/09 -problem started in 2007.

Car would not start due to passlock sensor. The security light blinked for 10 to 40 mins at a time and would not allow car to start. It has made me late to work, church, daycare, etc. It is still happening up to today's date which is may 19, 2012.

2004 monte carlo spedometer and instrument cluster works erradicle during normal driving conditions and could result in a faster than posted driving expierence. If not trained and tested at high speed manuvers driver and passenger safety is reduced , dramatically !

2004 chevrolet monte carlo gauge cluster is erratic and does not work properly i did receive a recall for my 2004 chevy silverado for the same problem but am not having any problems with that vehicle dealership told me they should have a recall on all 2004 models as they are all made at the same manufacturer.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo.the contact stated that the speedometer would go to 30 mph when the vehicle was turned off.when the vehicle was turned on, the speedometer would read 35 mph even though he was driving 65 mph.the failure has been occurring for a year and the vehicle was taken to the dealer.the contact stated that this was a safety issue because the vehicle travels at speeds that are not within regulation and could lead to speeding tickets and crashes.the current mileage was 39,000 and failure mileage was 33,000.

Speedometer went haywire back in feb 2008.would read many mph higher than current speed.would read 30-40mph at idle or when shut off.took car to chevy dealer.they testing it and found nothing wrong but was told it would be $500 to replace if it happens again.it worked fine until today when the problem returned.did some research online and found many 2004 chevy owners (monte carlo's and impala's) with same problem.gm does not appear to want to do anything.research asked anyone with similar problem to report to gm and nhtsa.

No accident yetno fire yet please we are entitled to our recall toothank you

Instrument cluster panel gauges gone bad for my vehicle. The speedometer needle starts at a random point on the gauge and always reads incorrect. When traveling on highways, the needle may turn 180 - 360 degrees around the gauge, making it impossible to determine speed, makes using the cruise control option dangerous, and a higher risk of getting stopped for a speeding ticket. The tachometer gauge works 50% of the time but the other times the needle is in the "red zone" giving the driver a false sense of the transmission shifting. The temp gauge works 90%, but in cold weather it can stay about the halfway line also show a wrong reading of the engine overheating.

Gauge cluster is inoperative or inaccurate that may lead to an accident, fines, expensive repair cost due to inaccurate gauge readings, or fatality.has been addressed on particular vehicles(http://www.carcomplaints.com/chevrolet/monte_carlo/2004/electrical/gauge_cluster_needles_spazz_out.shtml) but not the monte carlo line.2004 monte carlo instrument panel defects comments: writing in concern for all. There is an obvious defect with the original equipment installed on the 2004 monte carlo's among others i'm sure. Gm will do nothing about it. The gauges will not read correctly which will eventually result in fines, injuries, expensive repair cost due to faulty gauge readings, and possible fatalities. For a small example of complaints go to http://www.aboutautomobile.com/complaint/2004/chevrolet/monte+carlo/digital+instrument+panel would like you're support in urging gm to recall and correct this problem before somebody becomes a statistic, or is fined for altering the speedometer trying to fix this themselves. Thank you in advance for your support.

I to havea 2004 monte carlo that the instrument panel gauges have all gone out. It started at 40,000 miles now speedometer, tachometer are no longer functional. This is very dangerous., i contacted general motors they said they haven't gotten any complaints on this issue (this is the same issue they had with the trucks but they covered them. These are the same electronics) they informed me to take it to a dealer where it will cost me about$700.00 to fix.the internet is loaded with customers with this same complaint so i find it hard to believe gm has not heard of it. I guess someone has to die before it will become noticed.

Noticed smoke from the passenger side dash by the door upon investigation notice thesmoke was coming from the fuse box on the passenger side, upon further investigation i noticed the a wire coming from the fuse box was burned as well as the fuse box was burned also, after this happened other electrical devices started showing doors ajar, dome lights stay on all of the time, rear defroster stopped working, the body sensing components are not working, i am afraid the this is going to cause a fire in the passenger compartment as well as making it a danger to drive, this has been discussed in multiple forums stating that 2002-2008 monte carlo, impala and other vehicles have this same issue.

At approximately 45,000 miles the speedometer quit reading correctly. Next the tachometer went haywire. Now the temp gauge has quit.

Electrical system gauges, speedometer froze, gas, oil, and rpm pegged...

The instrument panel goes crazythe speedometer pegs out and you might be going 20mph or it might show you are going 40 and the tac will be on 2000rpm going down the hwy and the heat gauge will go all the way over and the all the other gauges will do that also or they will do nothing.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that the instrument cluster gauge failed to work. There were no warning indicators illuminated. Warped dashboard in my 2004 monte carlo, radio face also gets blistering hot, trunk lid open appears all the time on dash, too k to dealer, trunk lid fixed new dash installed 3 days later dash warped worse than before and both side pillars now cracked, brakes still noisy and pedal to the floor, dealer states normal. Scheduling for my second dashboard, and still no answers on why you cant touch the radio.

The speedomter and rpm gauges work irratically, and are not accurate. There were no signs that this was starting it just one day started for no apparent reason. I have spoken to serveral owners of the 2004 chevrolet monte carlo's in my area, and all have the same problems. Chevrolet needs to recall these dash clusters.

My oil pressure gage went out then my tachometer went out and now the speedometer went out.

Every gauge on my instrument panel of a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo are inoperable.this has been ongoing for years, with each gauge failing.dealers, of course, are completely aware that the problem is rampant in monte carlos over a 5-6 year production period and are charging approximately $600 or more to repair.after reading many posts on internet sites and talking to owners and dealers, this is a problem that should result in a recall.don't have $600 or more to repair so i have resorted to using a gift card and purchasing a gps for $50 so i can at least see my speed as i'm driving.

2004 monte carlo ss intimidator..gauge panel working improperly.including the speedometer which could result in serious accident.

To the best of my knowledge, any time the wipers, lights, rear-defrost, or when its just cold out, the instrument cluster stops functioning.notably the speedometer will go up with speed, but not go back down.this also applies to the oil pressure, temperature, fuel and rpm gauges.this defect makes it so i have no idea what speed i am traveling and can be a risk to hazardous road conditions.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo.while driving approximately 65 mph, the speedometer dial moved back and forth inadvertently.the contact continued to drive the vehicle for approximately one year and the failure continued intermittently.the dealer and manufacturer were not notified.the vin was unknown.the current mileage was 60,700 and failure mileage was 45,000.

Security lights comes on and car dies, ignition switch faulty, car start but dies

There was nothing wrong with my car until one night and they suddenly i look down and my speedometer says i'm going 110 when i'm only going 30.this happens every day. I will be driving for about 30 minutes and then my speedometer will be reading the wrong thing. My tachometer will be wrong as well.i went to the gm dealer and they said that to fix itwould be 350 dollars. While i was there they said that the gm trucks had a recall for they instrument cluster and it is the same one that is in my monte carlo. This is a safety hazard towards anyone who has this type of model instrument cluster.

I started driving the car whenthe security feature turned on on my car. My car would not turn on afterwardsin the parking lot for a couple minutes have passed. The security light was on during that time.

My speedometer, rpm, and gas gauges are inaccurate. I cannot tell how fast i am going, nor how much gas i have. Then ever since i bought my car, brand new, my transmission has been slipping, its an automatic. The dealer fixed it the 1st time, but now again, 90,000 miles later, its us starting to happen again.my radio has stopped working, no light or noise period. Please recall because i have read literally hundreds of posts of the same problem in the same car. I paid good money for my car, not for this. All if these problems are unsafe and i really hate for my 1 year old boy to ride in it. Please, please recall the car.

Tl-the contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 30 mph, the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact also stated that the heating system failed. The failure recurred several times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed but the diagnostic testing results were unknown. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 260,000. Djr

Instrument cluster inoperative. Speedometer says you are doing 110 mph when car is shut off and in park. Temperature gauge does not register. Always reads cold. Tachometer barely works. All gauges give a false reading. Contacted gm about the problem and they said it is not a safety concern so it will not be recalled. Quoted over $500 to replace the instrument cluster. Driver message center pops up random warnings, like check air pressure when air pressure is fine. Not sure how this does not classify as a safety concern when you have no clue how fast you are going, if the car is going to overheat, if the oil pressure is too high or low, or if the super charger boost is correct. Gm needs to recall these cars and fix it before someone gets seriously injured!!!!!

My gages sometimes work when thewy do it is inaccurate information. Sometimes they dont work at all.

I have a 2004 monte carlo ls and about 6 months ago the speedometer would not display the correct speed and now it doesn't work at all. I have dealt with it and paid an issued speeding ticket. Today the temperature gauge was reading hot. I immediately panicked and pulled over wondering why my car would be over heating after only 2 miles worth of driving. I sat for about 5 minutes before opening the hood. The vehicle was not hot and had coolant. When i got in to continue my drive i started the engine and the temperature gauge went all the way past hot to the 9 o'clock position where it is now stuck resting against the fuel gauge. Im now afraid of driving the vehicle specially if the next gauge goes too. The repair must be done at the dealership and they want 500-1500 dollars. I am a parent of 6 and do not have that money. I have noticed this is such a big issue with this car. I just wish i would have known about it before i bought it. I want to know why there is no recall on this dangerous problem with my vehicle.

2 years ago when i had 12000 miles on my monte carlo ss intimidator my dash gauges started reading wrong information now at 14607 miles the gauges don't work at all except for the oil pressure gauge. I have tried to contact chevy help center 4 times in the past two months and they have not replied to my e-mails for information concerning this wide spread factory installed faulty component. Any information odi can give me to resolve this problem will be greatly appreciated.thank you

While driving at night on a major interstate i was suddenly being passed and was nearly rear ended because although my speedometer showed i was doing 65 mph, i was actually going much slower.i realized there was a defect when i exited and while coming to a stop at the red light, my speedometer stayed on 60 mph. Since then my tachometer and my gas gauge quit working.the needles point straight down on all three.i called three different dealerships all of which have quoted about $400 to repair the cluster assembly.given that this is a known defective part and has been recalled in a couple of other chevy models, chevy needs to recall the monte carlo and fix this for all mc owners.i bought the car new and the defect first occurred at about 85,000 miles. Today i have just under 90,000 miles but rarely drive the vehicle due to the defect.i am also worried about passing state inspection due to this defect that chevy should be held accountable for.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that the security warning light constantly flashed and the vehicle was unable to start. In addition, the vehicle stalled several times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who replaced the keys for the ignition but the failure continued. The security warning light continued to illuminate. The pass lock protection system was unable to be overridden so the contact was unable to determine the solution to repair the vehicle. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v400000 (electrical system). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

Instrument cluster gauges are not reading correctly. It started with the gas gauge and has now progressed to all gauges in error. Have talked to others and looked on the internet and discovered that this is a very common failure. I consider this a hazard since speed and engine condition cannot be determined. I have not taken it to the dealer yet.

While driving, the engine shuts off causing power steering and power brakes to stop working as well as having no power to accelerate while trying to pull over to the shoulder of road. Once stopped i can put the car in park and turn the ignition on and the engine will start back. This happened app. 10 to 15 times in less than one week.

Key is stuck in ignition and will not release nor completely shut off engine.lock cylinder was replaced a year ago.believe that the ignition lock cylinder needs to be replaced.

Have a 2004 monte carlo.sporadically when driving the speedometer continues to climb.i was following my husband who was doing 45mph and and i was doing 105 then 114 then 120 then 140 then it dropped straight down.it sometimes resets it self and other times it stays like that for days.the car has 42,234 miles on it.

Follow up to odi id#10298010 it would seem that death or injury must result from an equipment failure to warrant action. I was lucky to escape either when, while driving i 80 the speedometer failed for the first time. The speed control was set at 65mph, but when i realized the speedometer was indicating +100mph, i reduced speed rapidly and was very nearly run over by the semi tractor/trailer behind me. Gm is aware that components in these instrument panels are defective. Please, demand a recall of these vehicles before someone dies.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number:14v400000 (electrical system); however, while driving at 5 mph, the vehicle stalled and the power steering seized. Also the entire warning panel illuminated and all electrical power seized. The failure occurred multiple times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.updated 7/29/15the consumer stated the vehicle would also buck like it was about to stall. The consumer discontinued driving the vehicle.updated 11/13/15

My speedometer and gas gage on my 2004 chevrolet monte carlo are erratic in their readings.sometimes it will read 100mph while i am not moving, and sometimes it will read 0mph when i am going at least 65mph.i have not had any consequences (speeding tickets or accidents)due to this failure, but it is inconvenient and surely will cause problems in the future.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo.while driving approximately 45 mph on normal road conditions, the speedometer displayed inaccurate readings.there were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel.the vehicle was taken to anindependent repair shop and they stated that the failure was related to the instrument panel cluster.the vehicle was repaired.the contact was concerned of the safety risk involved.the vin was unknown.the failure mileage was 50,000 and current mileage was 60,000.updated 12/15/08. *ljupdated 12/15/08.

Have had the car since feb-14-08. Repeatedly the message center battery light comes on, for ten minutes or longer. Then all the gauges in cluster drop as if car is off including cruise control, seat belt light and chime. Having traveled from ny to ga i was concerned i'd be stranded. Contacted onstar diagnostics en route and was told they didn't detect a problem. 29,000 miles on it, believe factory warranty is still active and will take it in asap.

No recent work leading up to the problem has been done to the vehicle. The vehicles speedometer reads erratic speeds while driving. Sometimes it will stop while braking and pick up again immediately upon acceleration. Thus showing a higher speed than actual. Most of the time it will stop while accelerating and either stay immobile or will pick up eventually showing a lower than actual speed indication. I have read about this same complaint on multiple forums, on a variety of gm vehicles. Nothing has been done to correct this issue.

Instrument cluster frequently malfunctions, i.e. Speedometer, gas gage, rmp gage, as needs on cluster either "stick" or do not return to their proper position when the car is shut off.gm currently does not have this listed under their recall agreement, neglecting a potentially serious risk of accidents.

Driving at 10 mph and then went to go 45 mph my speed reading went to 120 mph. I wasn't going that fast it started to jump around then stayed at 120 mph. I then stopped and keep turning the key on and off it went down to 100 at first then shut off car again then went down to 90 so i kept doing that till it was at 0. Drove about 10-15 miles and it started to jump again. I then called the dealer where i bought the car 2 months ago and they want to charge me several hundreds to fix. I read alot of reviews on this year monte carlo, everyone had the same issues and no recall on this car to get fixed. I will not ever buy another chevy car and i will be glad to tell friends and family how chevy treats there customers. Matter infact i will contact my local tv station toinform other how chevy takes care of there customers.

I started my car and realized the fuel gauge was buried all to the right. Then when driving the car my speedometer was giving false readings. When i'm stopped it displays 50 mpg. Now all the gauges are either erratic or not working at all.

2004 chevrolet monte carlo - (approximately 28,000 miles) unable to determine actual speed when driving car:speedometer hangs (does not return to zero) when stopped.subsequent driving continues to increase speed reading.eventually speedometer stays stuck at 140 mph.chevrolet says there is no recall or warranty for this failure.cost to repair $500 to $800.

Speedometer failure on 2004 chevrolet monte carlo:failure started with speedometer reading anywhere from 10-15mph low, causing excessive speed while driving.failure progressed to either reading zero mph or a consistent 20mph during all speeds of driving.failure occurred on vehicle with approximately 45,000 miles on the vehicle.

Instrument cluster/ speedometer malfunction, erratically reads vehicle speed or not at all. All else works well. Love my monte but it is annoying to say the least to be as o.c.d about my car as i am and to have this major part of communication between car and driver go badchevy admits to having an issue with this item, but will do nothing about, unless i fork over $ 600.00 forparts and repair. Chevy.... God don't like ugly!

As i put the car in drive as reached about 15 mph the cluster panel started to spin as if it had a mind of it's own.since then i don't know how fast im going.i could be stopped at a light and it says im going 90.i could be in a neighborhood and im going faster then my gauges can read.i have no gas gauge.it reads a different amount any given minute.my car over heated on 12/18/2013 thanks to having a gauge read that my temperatures were fine.but really they weren't.it would be nice to know how fast im going. If my car is about to overheat. If i need gas.long road trips are out of the question.but they shouldn't be i paid for this car. Only to have it fail at 26,000 miles.it wasn't covered by bumper to bumper as it took me more than 3 years to get to 26,000 miles.i don't want to be taking a curve too fast and crash my car because im not equipped with mandatory safety equipment to drive.nothing on the cluster panel works.

Speedometer stopped working properly, leaving me unable to determine the correct speed. I almost ran into the back of another car going slower because i was unaware of the problem until then. It sometimes now don't work at all.

Speedometer stopped working vechical only had 19,000miles.

2004 chevrolet monte carlo ls, 43330 miles, complete failure of speedometer and tachometer in the automobile's dashboard instrument cluster.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo.while driving at any speed, the speedometer dial would remain at 0 mph.when the vehicle is turned off and restarted, the speedometer dial would move 5 mph each additional time.the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer.the current mileage was 108,000 and failure mileage was 75,000.

Dangerous gm speedometer defectthe electronic speedometer on 2004 chevrolet monte carlo periodically begins to display incorrect information. This can be either reflecting a lower than actual speed or a higher than actual speed. This results in either driving at an unsafe speed for the road and/or conditions or the presenting an obstacle to other drivers by maintainga lower speed than the general traffic.although this has not resulted in an accident on our vehicle, i have noted many other owners identifying this issue on various chat rooms and customer forums on the internet. From what i have seen on the internet this issue is not limited to the 2004 chevy monte carlo, other makes of gm vehicles (cars and trucks) manufactured before and after this year have shown the same defectwe have contacted the gm dealer and were told they are not responsible for correcting this problem and we would have to pay to replace the entire dashboard to correct the issue.we purchased this vehicle new and the problem surfaced shortly after reaching 36000 miles (warranty period).given the recent publicity regarding toyota's problems i think it would be well served to identify and correct this issue before it becomes as serious.this error occurs almost daily without warning. While you are driving the speedometer appears to work normally and at some point it will stop working, the only way to detect is to accelerate sharply or apply the brakes sharply while noting if the speedometer reflects the change in speed.this approach may work well for an experienced driver but a very young driver or an elderly driver may note realize the speedometer is not accurate and result in a accident.

My speedometer began to act erratically last winter, just after my warranty expired.i didn't realize it until i was pulled over for going 20 miles over the limit, with my cruise control on.i didn't receive a ticket, but was late for an important appointment.when i called my chevy dealer, they claimed they had never heard of this and would have to replace the entire panel.this occurs more in very cold or rainy conditions.i have not had it corrected yet.

I have a 2004 chevy monte carlo.the speedometer went out last fall.not completely right away, just off by 8-15 miles per hour.i was stopped by a police officer who said that i was speeding.i had the cruise set for 57 miles per hour.he said that i was going 73 miles per hour. No way!since the beginning of december it completely quit.i have had the speed sensor replaced, that lasted all of three hours.is there anything that i can do?this is not a cheap fix.

I have a 2004 monte carlo ss that i bought brand new in 2004. I have about 38,000 miles on it and my volt gauge, gas gauge and my speedometer are not working properly, speedometer shows wrong speed and sometimes doesn't work at all. Gas and volt gauges are pointing straight down all the time. This problem started around january. I searched around on the internet and found out that i could leave a complaint here with your agency.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. While driving at 15 mph, the contact noticed that the speedometer along with other gauges on the instrument panel were non-functional. The contact called the dealership and was informed that she would be responsible for all repair costs. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 30,000. The current mileage was 50,288.

Instrument panel malfunctions. Tach, gas gauge, and speedometer. Only work intermittently. Sometimes i look at speedometer and it says 70 mph when i am doing 25 mph and sometimes it says 25mph when i am doing 70 mph. Started at about 50k miles. Chevy did recall on trucks of this year for the same issue but did not include monte carlo's. Replacement cost can run anywhere from 600 to 2000 dollars. Money i do not have at present. Filing complaint to add to other complaints. If enough complain then maybe chevy will do something.. One of those things you expect never to go wrong.........

Instrument cluster stopped working on my 2004 chevrolet monte carlo ss. Temp gauge and speedometer have both stopped working. Speedometer says i'm doing 110 mph all the time, even with car shut off. My friend had the same thing happen to her 2005 monte carlo and had it replaced under warranty. My car started as soon as the warranty ended. I have heard several complaints from other 2004 and 2005 monte carlo owners for the same exact problem. I did contact chevrolet about my issue. They said i will have to pay close to $1000 to have the cluster replaced, which i can't afford as i am a single mother just barely getting by. They also said that they will not recall a vehicle unless they have a bunch of complaints from the same area. I think this should be a safety recall beings it is a major safety issue due to not knowing how fast i am going or if my car is ready to overheat.

I have a 2004 monte carlo ss, at about 55,000 miles the speedometer starting acting unreliable.sometimes i registers 30 mph when i am at 70, other times it will stick at 71 mph when i am at zero.it occurs randomly with different behaviors, is unreliable.i called the local gm dealer and they mention it is a problem with the instrument cluster.this is a safety issue and other gm vehicles i am told had recalls for this same issue.not being able to reliably know the speed in all situations is a risk to the operators.

Speedometer fails to register the correct miles per hour and doesn't even work most of the time. I have had it checked at a certified garage.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo.while driving approximately 80 mph on normal road conditions, the instrument panel cluster failed without warning.however, the temperature gauge displayed accurate readings.the vehicle has not been repaired.the vin was unknown.the failure mileage was 60,000 and current mileage was 75,000. Updated 3/27/09 updated 03/31/09.

Speedometer stopped working while driving down the road.

Faulty speedometer.does not read accurate speed the majority of the time.not sure if odometer is affected also, but i do know that there is a present problem gm has admitted to which affects their trucks and suvs in the same year.special policy for replacement/repair is being offered to owners of those vehicles.

My instrument panel has gone bizurk.my speedometer isn't reading right.going 80 in a 25 mph zone.or 120 mph while traveling 55.not.my thermostat gauge reads hot all the time and nothing is wrong with the thermostat.now in the past week my fuel gauge doesn't register. The only piece i'm aware that is working is the tac.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo.the speedometer never displays the correct speed.the vehicle has not been taken to a dealer for inspection.the current mileage was 83,000 and failure mileage was 76,000.updated 04/16/08

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo.the contact stated that all the gauges on the instrumental panel displayed inaccurate readings.he is unable to determine how fast he is driving.the vehicle has not been taken to the dealer.the current and failure mileages were 36,000.

About a week after purchasing the car i realized that none of the gauges on the control panel were accurate.my speedometer sticks and reads random speeds so i never know how fast i'm going, my gas gage registers random amounts so i have to keep track of my fuel using my odometer.my oil and radiator gauges just don't work with the exception of an occasional blip. I read that this vehicle has the same control panel as another gm truck that was recalled for the same reason.one of these days i'm going to get a speeding ticket because i never know how fast i'm driving.it's frustrating.

The speedometer and rpm go crazy can be doing 20 and says im doing 100.

My gas gauge stopped working first, still not working. Now my speedometer only works sometimes not real sure if its correct when it does work i received a speeding ticket when i did not realize i was speeding.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo.when the vehicle is traveling one speed, the speedometer displays another speed.the failure occurred on several occasions.the vehicle has not yet been taken to a dealer.the current mileage was 67,937 and failure mileage was 30,000. Updated 04/16/08.*lj

Display panel aka control center failure. Inoperative speedometer and tachometer. Occasionally errant fuel gauge.

Bad stepper motors in my tachometer, voltmeter and now my engine temperature meter have died or are faulty, producing erroneous readings. The failures seem to be randomly occurring as the motors slowly die out, giving false readings in each gauge until they are permanently stuck in a position. This has occurred to each meter over the last several months, with meters giving incorrect values, sometimes resetting and functioning properly once the engine is turned off and back on, but then becoming incorrect once again.consequences of this could lead to further damage to the car in case an actual problem occurs in areas of the car where monitoring the situation would eb critical, such as in my case when my engine coolant was running very low but i could not tell due to the gauge being broken. Serious damage to my car and potentially myself could have occurred.the only available option is to purchase a new dash cluster for several hundred dollars, while the problematic motors cost $5 each to replace but altering the dash is not legal.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo ss. The contact stated that the instrument panel clusters have failed. None of the gauges on the instrument panel are moving normally. The speed odometer remained at 20 mph regardless of the speed that the contact is driving. The contact has not taken the vehicle to the dealer or contacted the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 26,038.

Instrument cluster. More specifically the odometer and temp gauge just get stuck and go all over the place while driving. The odometer will read 50 mph when going much faster ad the more you slow down the lower it reads finally when you stop the needle reads well below 0 then when you start moving again you can be at 40-45 mph and it reads 10mph or less.

2004 chevrolet monte carlo. Consumer states electronic instrument cluster failure.*tgw the consumer stated after only 43,000, the speedometer began performing sporadically. He had no way of knowing how fast he was actually driving.

My speedometer is erratic.at times it reads 140 mph at a complete stop or 80 mph when i think i'm doing 30 mph.there is no way to tell how fast i'm actually going.

Speedometer abruptly quit working indicating a speed of over 120 miles@hour while driving approximately 50-55 miles per through a highly controlled area. You may want to take a look at the on line comments made by other owners about the identical problem with no response from gm to their inquiries and gouging by dealers. Gm and dealers decline to acknowledge the issue, when you are disreputable it will catch up, no wonder the american auto manufacturers continue to struggle.

I purchase a 2004 monte carlo ls in oct. Of 2007.the instrument cluster worked ok until 3 months after i had the car. Now the tach is never where its supposed to be. Sometimes it will jump past the red zone on its own. I have some other friends that have a 2004 impala that is showing the same issues, with the tach and speedometer. This seems like a major safety issue and needs to be addressed. I have read many forums online describing this same issue.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that the instrument clusters on his vehicle failed without warning. All of the gauge needles on the instrument panel were pointed downward and inoperable. While driving, the contact was unsure of his speed including how fast or slow he was driving. The manufacturer advised him to have an authorized dealer diagnose the failure. The manufacturer also mailed the contact a letter informing him that the warranty is not valid for the repair and that there are no related recalls. The contact is responsible for paying $450 to have the vehicle repaired. The contact filed claim#71-762-310145 with the manufacturer. The failure mileage was 64,776.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that all the gauges on the vehicle failed, including the fuel gauge and speedometer. The contact was concerned because he could not determine what speed he was traveling or if there was an internal failure because none of the dashboard warning lights would illuminate. The dealer only advised that the instrument cluster would potentially need to be replaced.the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 47,000 and the current mileage was 52,700.

Hi there,i bought a 2004 chevy monte carlo from carmax in october 2007.all was functioning fine until i noticed about a week ago, february 7, 2008, that the rpm was registering as very high on the tachometer, almost into the red area, around 5500 and higher.panicking, i took it to a meineke car repair place, where they told me nothing was wrong with the car engine etc., and that it was the gauge itself that was messed up.they suggested i check recalls.i found no recalls on tachometers for 2004 chevy monte carlos.i thought i'd wait and check around for prices, but this morning, february 12, 2008, on my way in to work, my speedometer started showing 30mph, when i knew i was going at least 70mph.i've checked for recalls on speedometers, and i see none.the tachometer was bad enough, but i cannot drive properly without a functioning speedometer, and from checking online, it looks like other monte carlo drivers are having the same problem.i love my car, but this is a problem.please recall the affected part (instrument panel/cluster).thank you, eulena jonsson

The speedometer on my 2005 monte carlo fluctuates and will stick at past 140 mph when i am driving along at posted speeds. Also, my gas gauge will surpass the full mark when i know i have less than full.

Speedometer needle is not showing correct speed.it will show 10 mph when vehicle is maintaining identical speed of other vehicles on a freeway .it will show 120 mph when vehicle is stopped.the needle will point directly downward at any given time.

Erratic speedometer operation which will indicate speeds of over 140mph attimes, even when stopped,or lower mph than is actually being traveled.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo.while driving at any speed, all of the instrument panel indicators fail.there were no warnings prior to the intermittent failures.the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer.the current mileage was 53,392 and failure mileage was 50,000.updated 07/08/08.updated

Speedometer failure; driving down road, speedometer went to zero.driving freeway, speedometer suddenly went backwards past zero.driving down road, speedometer went from 35 to 60 to 120.each time would not work again until car sat parked and restarted.even in park with car off at timesspeedometer was still reading either zero or 120.took to dealer, had to pull out dash and send it out for repair overnight, fixed for $438.88.(car has 60,000 miles).

Speedometer in 2004 monte carlo began behaving erratically about 10k miles ago.now it has affected the other gauges.the speedometer reads anywhere from 60 to 120 at a standstill.rpm gauge is maxed.this seems to be a common problem with gm ic's and i am wondering why there is no recall notice.at this time i can not afford to have it fixed or be without it for 3 days.

This just started right out of the blue. My speedometer works very erratically. Sometimes it reads 30mph when im doing 70mph and sometimes it says 30mph when im not even moving. It can also be any combination of any speed. It just does whatever. Sometimes it works fine. Usually when it starts to go bad it eventually will just drop to below 0mph and stay there. Now the tachometer is doing the same thing. Both occur totally at random. This could easily lead me to have an accident if i don't know how fast im going. Nothing has been done to fix it because i really don't think i could afford to get it fixed and i know nothing about automobile electronics either. The car is a 2004 chevy monte carlo ss with 61,000 miles.

For several months now my gauges my 2004 chevrolet monte carlo have not worked..it started off with the speedometer not working all the time.. Now it doesn't work at all. The rpms gauge doesn't work either. Tonight my gas gauge stopped working. I have discovered now that alot of people with this vehicle has the same problem. Its will cost me several hundred dollars to have this fixed. If so many people have had this problem a recall or something should be issued..

My instrument panel for over 4yearshas intermittently stopped like the speedometer would say i was going 100mph while going 20mph or 0mph when going 45mph. I have reported to various auto shops and chevrolet dealership and was told that if not constant do not worry about it. Now the rpm are stuck at 1 rpms and the speedometer is intermittent and not sure my other gauges are correct??? i am so frustrated as gm states they will not fix and no recall yet i read everywhere that people have gotten in fixed or have the same problem. This should be a recall and per the info below gm is fully aware. The dealership wants me to pay $500 for a defect and i need help. Also per the info below it has to be under 70000 miles. Well i have reported it since 55000!!! i want my car fixed by gm but they are refusing. The inst.panel cluster has stopped working in my 2004 monte carlo,,,hard to drive without a speedometer!

My speedometer is erratic.it will show incorrect speeds.i have had this replaced once by the dealer while the car was under warranty but it is no longer covered.i have read on the internet that this is a common problem with chevrolet products.i believe someone should force chevrolet to recall these cars since the instruments in the clusters cannot be depended on to be accurate.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. While driving approximately 60 mph, the speed odometer displayed an incorrect reading of 5 mph. The failure occurred continuously and over a period of time the speed odometer became inoperative.in addition, the fuel gauge would not function properly. Instrument cluster failure.

Approximately one year ago, i started noticing that my tachometer on my 2004 monte carlo ss was not functioning properly all the time. It is an intermittent problem, and i have since learned to live with it. Well now the speedometer started yesterday with a very similar problem. It will only register the highest speed i get to...and stay in that position until the car is almost at a dead stop. If you reduce your speed, you can not tell how fast you are going. Ihave done a lot of research on line regarding this, and it is apparent that chevy and gm trucks from 03- and 04 are covered by a safety recall for this identical problem. I contacted the local dealership and they stated it was not a known issue with the monte carlos...however internet search can produce cars of all types in that date range that all have had the same failure. This is a 2004 monte carlo ss that just has 36600 miles. And the problem has been apparent since last summer (just a month after it went out of the "date" warranty)...

Speedometer started registering incorrect speed, then worked sporadically and sometimes not at all. Car was taken to the dealership to have it looked at. They determined that the whole instrument panel console needed to be replaced (not just the speedometer). The dealership sent the old instrument panel to the parts supplier and received a new instrument panel, then installed it. They speculated that it might have been because of a bad ground in the system. Unsure whether or not old part is available.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that the traction control warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who inspected the vehicle. The failure was located at the tail light assembly wires. The tail light wiring was wired incorrectly and caused the brake light and the traction control to fail. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure and the current mileage was 123,401.updated 6/6/12 the consumer believed during assembly at the gm factory, the tail light/stop light wiring wasimproperly routed. On the left side, the wiring harness was wrapped around a mounting bolt and the right side, the wires were pinched between the sheet metal of the vehicle's body and the housing of the tail light assembly. Over time, the insulation on the wires became worn and caused a short and loss of brake light function. Updated 06/11/12

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact was driving approximately 50 mph with the headlights illuminated when both headlights failed to operate. My 2004 chevrolet monte carlo ss s/c which i purchased new has been experiencing poor dimmer switch operation for over a year. The issue is that when clicking from low to high beam or vice versa, the switch has a spungy feel like it wants to brake and the lights will not activate to desired high or low. Often takes several tries before lights dim or go to high beam. Sometimes they go out briefly. Gm was contacted and i was given a case number 71-690473858. They instructed me to have local dealership diagnosis problem. Dealership determined it was an internal fault in the multifunction switch. Quoted price of $536.18 plus $126.00 labor to repair. I was charged $22.47 for this diagnosis. Gm wanted to settle for 50% of cost to me. I did not accept because i cannot afford this nor do i believe it is due to my use of switch.i feel it is gm's defect and they should repair without cost.talking with co-workers, i have found 3 others who are experiencing the exact same problem. 2 own monte carlos and 1 owns a malibu. Also, atleast 1 of our gm passenger vans at work which is a 2007 has the same issue. I believe this to be a common problem with gm multifunction switches no matter what vehicle.

While driving at night with headlights on and switching from high beam to low beam using steering mounted switch the head lights would go out. The lights would only come back on after repeated switching of the high beam switch.

As driving at 45 mph during rush hour, i used my indicator to change lanes.this is a road that has 3 lanes.i was changing lanes into the middle.i had my stereo on at a normal volume with my baby in the car.as i started to move into the middle lane so did another car from the 3rd lane.i was being honked at by several cars.as i tried to recover, i was almost hit by the car moving into the middle lane and almost caused a bigger accident by trying to recover back into the lane i was in.it was at this point i realized my indicators had suddenly stopped working.i didn't know what to do.after 20 minutes of driving the indicators suddenly came back on. Four days later i was in the same situation. Navigating the roads without indicators.out of panic i hit the hazards.the lights all turned on with the hazard button.i turned it off and now the indicators were working again.well that must have been a one time thing.every time the indicators have gone out since, nothing works to get them working again.

Security light came on and went off when i shut car off then 2 days car would not turn over shut off for 10 min and car started normally.

Car would not go into reverse. I put it back into park then in reverse and it worked. I drove home feeling hesitation with the transmission. I dropped it off at the dealership. They confirmed it was the trans due to faulty parts. The warranty was for 36,000 milesmy car has 50,000. Iam looking for them to back there parts for replacement they want to charge 3,000.00 for repair.they then offered to give 1,000.00 towards repair but the whole reason the car broke was due to faulty parts.

The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 63,000.

Seat belts on both driver & passenger seats do not retract properly.if belts are not manually pulled in they hang loosely. Also on several occasions, belts will be very tight when wearing (across chest).if you try to move forward you are unable.the initial problem with seat belts not retracting started happening occasionally about 2 yrs ago but now happens all the time.it is extremely frustrating to not have the seat belt work properly and to have to manually pull seatbelt in.i have been searching various websites to see if chevy has done any recalls on this problem & haven't seen anything.i feel this is a safety problem since state law requires us to always wear seatbelts when driving.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo.the contact stated that the retractable seat belt was purchased on4/7/2011 and will not retract; however, it will sporadically fail to unlatch. The seat belt was replaced four times but the issue has recurred. The seat belt was repaired. The manufacturer was notified that they would work on the issue. The approximate failure mileage was unknown and the current failure mileage was 97,000.

I have a 2002 chevy impala and a 2004 chevy monte carlo. Right after my warranty expired on the monte carlo, my heated seat cover caught fire, caused personal injury and property damage. An adjuster came out to look at it and assured me that gm would fix the problem. 2 years later, i can't even get a return phone call.since then i purchased a 2002 impala. Heated seats worked for 2 days and i noticed a burn starting in the same exact spot where the monte carlo caught fire. Gm wants me to pay another $90 for the dealer to verify that the heated seat cover problem is in fact a heated seat cover problem.these cars are not safe to drive and i don't feel safe after being burned by it. Gm needs to issue a recall.i've called gm many many times and every time, someone has closed the case on the impala. Supposedly, gm had issued a check to repair the monte carlo, but i never received it and they won't call me back about it.this issue needs to be recalled by either gm or the heated seat manufacturer.so far, only one person has been injured by the monte carlo. Since then, the heated seat has been disconnected. The impala seat has not yet caught fire, but a burn hole has started and when it started to get hot, the heated seat was immediately disconnected.

To whom it may concern,i have a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. This is a very nice car with all the options. The heated seat caught fire and in turn caught me on fire. I put the fire out with my hand but not before it burned a hole through the seat and in my coat.fortunately, i was just parking when this occurred. If i wouldn?t have been able to snuff the fire before it got out of hand, i could have been seriously injured. Further, just think if i had kids in the back seat. This is a 2-door car and i would not have been able to get anyone out of the back seat if the front seat was engulfed in flames.i called the customer support line for gm and they informed me to take it to the dealership for a diagnostic. The dealership confirmed the fire was caused by faulty wiring in the seat heater. The dealership then made the necessary calls and informed me that the seat would not be fixed and i must call my insurance company and open a claim which would cost me a $500 deductible.i have read reports of some brand new 2009 chevrolet cars/trucks that already have recalls for seats which can cause fires. Since my car is a 2004 it's no longer covered.if a heated seat would fail, i would expect it to not get warm, or work intermittently. But to catch fire, burn my clothing and cause physical harm due to no fault of my own, this is unacceptable.i have owned many gm cars; three camaros, a blazer, and now the monte carlo. I have always taken a chevrolet over any other car. Excuse the pun, but that flame is gone. My car is now worth less than half the price of last year. With a burned seat and the cost of repairs and replacement of my burned clothing, it's worth even less.i will never again own a vehicle labeled, built, contracted, designed, owned, or sold by gm or any of its affiliates.replacing a heated seat consists of one part. The heating element is molded into the leather seat cover. Unfortunately for gm, a lawsuit and bad publicity will cost more.

Since its been getting colder, i have been using my car seat warmers. I've been noticing in the last week that it has been getting extremely hot within a short amount of time & i'm noticing a burning smell. Yesterday i turned the driver seat, seat warmer on & it started to smoke & nearly sparked a fire in the seat.the stitching had started to smolder & burn.i immediately pulled over & turned the seat warmer off.

Drivers side heated seat inoperative. Took to dealer and was told i needed a new cover. I inspected the seat and discovered a quarter size burn mark inside the cushion. The heating element became overheated and began to burn the cushion.

I turned the vehicle on.the instrument panel said traction control off , service abs.i thought oh great.i drove to the store and the vehicle drove like usual.i got back in the vehicle and the message was now off the message board on the instrument panel.a few days later i turn on the car and the message appears.mid driving the message disappeared. The next day the message appears again.i turn off the vehicle and turn on the vehicle again this time the message is gone.this still continues.not as frequent.but i like others think everything is ok as soon as the message is gone.what if this isn't the case.what if something is wrong with the abs.wouldn't the message stay in the message center?updated 06/17/14

Clunking noise in steering wheel.. Local aaa repair center gave me a service bulletin listing this as a problem with the steering intermediate shaft in various gm models since 2000. The above mentioned shaft was replaced and the clunking went awayi have the replaced shaftgm's original fix was a lube kit(which did not last) then they listed a new "fix" change the shaft.i would like to know if the nhtsa has reviewed this problem since this is a part in the steering wheeland problems were identified in the 2000 year models?why wasn't there a recall on this?

Clunking noise in front end felt through steering wheel when turning.

It's concerning the noise that my front end makes whenever i make a turn or reverse.i searched this site and found an nhtsa item #618086, service bulletin # 01-02-32-001 that pretty much covers the issue with my car.what do i do about this and is it dangerous?

Concerns with loud clunk noise from front of vehicle turning maneuver / steering wheel rotation.

Clunking noise from the steering column.service writer took the info & an hour later informed me that problem was fixed and i owed $108.00!!!!no communication, no estimate, no nothing but this charge, even though i have an extended warranty and gm knows about this problem.said they lubed a neopreneseal on the intermediate shaft of the steering column.

I own a 2004 chevroletmonte carlo. I starting having steering problems. Thesteering felt loose and like metal grinding together. The bumping could be feltoverin the passenger seat as wellso it raised some concerns. After doing some online research i found it was the intermediate steering shaft. I am sure thecompany heard this complaint before. I found chevrolet's fixtofirst be a lube kit that wouldfix the problem for maybe 20,000 miles in which ipurchased and had the dealer apply. Waslater told the problem wasmissing and defective sub frame welds.they also fixedthe weldproblem with super glue?im not exactly sure what the mechanic did while fixing mine, but i had to pay for it out of pocket with no clue how safe and how long this fix will work. Paper just said intermediate replaced. And i purchaced the lube.it was a dealer'sdefect, and theywere very aware of.it. Ask any of theirmechanics. Yet no recall.

The rear trunk strut support has broken four times on my 2004 chevy monte carlo.i am concerned that this failure could lead to the trunk lid smashing down on someone's hand causing serious injury

All dash gauges have failed (one at a time) including speedometer (which was the last gauge to fail on 7-21-08).trunk release (electronic) failed.have been told the only way to get dash cluster repaired is through a dealer.dealer refuses to sell necessary part to a certified mechanic.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo.while driving approximately 15 mph, the suspension dropped.the contact stated that the entire bottom fell from underneath the vehicle.the vehicle was towed to the dealer.the mileages and purchase date were unknown.

While driving 40 mph vehicle shimmied.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

Speedometer doesn't work most of the time. It will freeze or go to 0 at any time or at any speed. This is a g.m. Problem that has resulted in recalls on some suv's but not any cars. If you were to google g.m speedometer problems you will get over 200,000 hits. Dealers know the problem exists but g.m is denying it is a safety problem. I have to assume when you are driving a car and don't know how fast you are going that is a safety issue.g.m customer service says there may be a recall someday if they get enough complaints...the car in question is a 2004 with 9500 miles. I feel this is something that needs to be researched. To recall some trucks and suv's but not the cars is stupid. I would hope our gov't can help resolve this problem...after all g.m would like our tax dollars.thank you

No complaintinquiry into data base.

Security lights comes on and car dies, ignition switch faulty, car start but dies

Dash buckling in middle. Dealer has replaced a dash panel twice, but the mating part is what is buckling. Dealer informed me that gm will no longer repair this problem, although it appears to be a manufacturing defect. I was told it was designed to buckle from the heat, and once it did, it would not return to original shape. Very disappointing to pay this amount of money for an automobile to have it look like trailer trash two years into its ownership.

Purchased '04 monte carlo ss august 2007 (23,713 miles).the instrument panel gauges began getting stuck, going completely around and simply do not work.began at approx 38-39,000 miles.paid over 1,600 for ext warranty and add'l 300 for 'fixing' the problem.still broken and chevy doesn't recall! also heated seats are getting scalding hot.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving the speedometer works intermittently.the vehicle was taken to the dealership for inspection.the dealership determined the speedometer needed to be replaced and parts were ordered.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo.the contact stated that the vehicle speed control failed.the vehicle has not been inspected by a dealer.the failure mileage was 44,000 and current mileage was 45,000.

Consumer took vehicle to dealer numerous times for vibration. Vehicle vibrated more when the cruise control was on.dealer was unable to duplicate the problem.

Passenger side wiper failed, had to spend $50 in shop to get it to work properly.

Today my wipers decided they would park in a straight up 12 o clock position, due to a tab that gets bent on the wiper parking mechanism.i know my car isn't the only one that has done it, a lot of other chevy's have as well, and its a safety issue for sure, kind of hard to see with 2 wipers in my vision, due to a faulty tab that needs to be recalled.general motors/chevy is well aware of the issue to, as they've released a tsb on it, and even made an updated parking mechanism with a stronger parking tab to stop this issue.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that the instrument panel warning indicators illuminated sporadically. In addition, the heater and rear defroster failed to operate. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v400000 (electrical system). The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

About a week ago my driver side window has started to slip from the tracks so its going to be in shop again! really annoyed with gm's car at this point!!

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact noticed that the tires were losing air frequently.the contact noticed a banging noise coming from under the vehicle while driving at various speeds. The contact also noticed pieces of chrome from the wheels were corroded and detached from the vehicle, fracturing the front driver's side brake line. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The contact replaced the front driver's side brake line. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.
