At the beginning of november 2003 the quages on the dash board (tachometor, speedometor, abs light, air bag light, check engine light ect.) would flash on & off and guages would sweep up and down. On november 9th i stop to get gas and shut the car off. When i got back in the car and turn it on the passanger side air bag deployed. On november 24th while i was driving the driver air bag deployed. I took the car both time to the dealer and was told by gm that they will not fix the air bags. About a year ago i bumped a car in front of me while stop in traffic and it made a 1 inch crack in my bumper the air bags did not deploy at that time. Gm states the accident that happen a year ago is why the air bags deployed in november. They advised me to call my insurance company. I took the car to the insurance and they confirm that the air bag deployment was not cause by the accident. My insurance is working with me to get gm to take responsibilty for the defect. They advised me to also file a complaint with you.

I just recently bought a 2002 monte carlo ss and i was driving home one night with my brights on at 55 mph and all of a sudden my headlights went out and i could see nothing!i tried safely and quickly pull over on the shoulder to stop the car until i was able to see if i could make my headlights come back on so i could get home. I was able to turn my dims on and see where the road was. Since this ordeal happened i have noticedthat the interior lights flicker on and off at random times and for no reason it has done in quite a few times and still continues to do it.

My 2002 chevy monte carlo has been experiencing electrical problems since i have owned it.the cruise control comes on without being selected and then the heating/cooling systems goes off and on by itself. The turn signal goes on and off. Sometimes it will work sometimes it will not. The fuel gauge does not register correctly goes up and down so i am never sure what is in the tank. Occasionally the car will not start at all even though the lights work, the radio plays, and everything else will operate inside the car. I will sit and wait a while. After about 15-25 minutes i will try to start it and then it will start up. This has been happening more and more. I have talked to other chevy monte carlo owner and they have had the same problems with their car.

I have a 2002 3.8 monte carlo ss. I am currently having problems with my ignition. When i try to start my car all the instruments turn on but the engine does not start. I attempted several times to restart the vehicle, but i still have the same problem. Then i put the car in drive and returned it to park position several times. After about a few minutes the car started. I have been having this problem for awhile.

Was going about 55-60 mph down the highway and my rpms started to drop and i let off gas and it just died. It cranks and turns over but will not fire

Issues with the bcm and passlock system. The car while on and driving will display security alongside the batt gauge quits working. If shut off car will not start, and light stay on. I have to disconnect the batt for some time. With the the auto lights sometimes come on during mid day with the sun shining. This is becoming a hassle. I'd rather purchase another car than go threw dealership hoops.

My father n law, n i were going to see a family member 12miles away from his home, when we stopped. At the convenience store for snacks, etc... We literally couldn't have been out of car 5 min, when store clerk yells hey someone's (chevys) smoking? we saw it was his n went to investigate the problem i went straight to driver side of vehicle n popped the trunk(thinking it wasn't more than a blown radiator hose) lord n heaven was i wrong, the engine looked as if it were all on fire...i immediately pushed hood down n ran for an extinguisher luckily the store had a good one. This recall as the country n state n manufacturers, call it is seriously deadly, to b 100 percent honest it is flat out wrong. Something this deadly should b notified to all current owners, of the vehicles. I seriously doubt he would have ever purchased it used or new if he knew what could have happened if my(kids)his grand, were w us. Mistakes happen. Own up to them! that's what makes u who u are.hopefully you won't damage him more with making this a 72yr old man who know has to pay more time,$$$, n just life for a mistake he didn't commit.

3 new fuel pump rails installed from recall ( gas gauge does not work). The problem still occurs, the gauge works for a small amount of time after new fuel rail is installed, then fails, leaving no way to check the amount of fuel left in the tank.

Driving down the highway with the cruise control the speedometer started to bounce up and down very erratically. When the speedo would start bouncing it would disengage the cruise control. At some points it would bouncing up and down but not come back above 40 or so mph. When it would do so the transmission would down shift and rev way up then the needle would come back up and the tyranny would shift back up. I had the needle go to 0 and not come back up at all and when sat for a second the transmission would kick completely out and i would be stuck on the road for a minute. After sitting for a bit i could move but the needle stayed at 0 and the transmission acted to be stuck in 1st.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that while driving 5 mph, the vehicle lost power. The vehicle was restarted and functioned properly. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they stated that the body control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred twice. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

Passlock system; car will randomly (temperature based?) refuse to start due to poorly constructed passlock sensor.i keep my dash apart so i can poke at the contacts (corroded? cheap tin plating) to hotwire my car when it locks out.took 20 minutes to go see if my wife was ok at the er, thanks chevy!

Vehicle will not start intermittently after it has warmed up. Has had the bcm changed and reprogrammed, the fuel system checked and filter changed; the fuel system relays have all been changed , the passlock and ignition cylinder with keys have been changed, and yet the problem persist.(note: all parts were brand new and gm parts) being a person in a certain criteria i never know when i may need to leave short notice but do not have the luxury of relying on this vehicle for that part of my job to get me there.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that there were various electrical shorts in the vehicle, which prevented the windows from going up and down. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and several independent mechanics for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer provided no solution and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was not available.

Since i have owned the 2002 chevrolet monte carlo ss. I have experienced many glitches with the electrical system in this car.first of all the cruise control light would come on without being selected and then i would begin to notice that if the cruise control light was on the heating/cooling system would not come on. The turn signals would not operate.i also began to notice that the anti theft system would engage and shut down the car preventing it from starting up. The ignition would just click but never engage.this has continue to happen off and on for the last 2 years. I have replaced the alternator, the battery, the starter. The cooling fans, the thermostat and serviced other areas but this still happens. I found out that there are many other owners of the 2002 chevrolet monte carlo ss who are experiencing the same problems.i purchased my car used but there are owner who purchased their vehicles new and have continuously experienced electrical malfunctions with their vehicles as well. I feel gm should be responsible for the shoddy workmanship they did on this vehicle from the date it was manufactured.

I have a 02 monte carlo that has a security fault light that pops up the car wont start wont even try to turn over i've looked up what it could be and while i was looking i've noticed that multiple makes and models have had same problem honda, but at least honda had enough decency to recall their mess ups. Multiple makes from chevy have this problem. I believe they need to recall this. I know of at least 6 cars around same year have this problem.

Driving on hwy 31 in mchenry il 60050ignition turned off with no warning.lost all power steering brakes car stopped by rubbing into curb. Was nearly rear ended by a pick up truck which had no warning that i was suddenly stoppingtrying to maneuver of traffic. With the curb and no power i hadno way to get off the road.

I have a 2002 monte carlo ss i go out to start my car and it won't start for about 15 minutes. The security light comes on to. 2002 chevrolet monte carlo. Consumer states vehicle will not start when the weather is hot weather, and should subject to a safety recall. *ss

On my way to work on my normal route before dawn, driving down a narrow curvy rural road rife with deer, i flicked on my high beams as usual. About 5 seconds later i lost all my headlights. Somehow safely pulled off road without falling into the ditch and turned off vehicle. After several minutes of turning lights on and off the fog lamps came on and i was able to make it back home very slowly. Spent $1000 getting a control module replaced. Hadtrouble with turn signals quitting randomly for 3 years, have to turn on emergency flashers in order to get them to work. Another $500 will fix the problem but since the car is only worth $1500 it doesn't seem worth it. This car is a piece of junk - 2 transmissions, numerous electrical problems, 5 steering shaft replacements...

While backing out of the driveway the abs lite came on with warning bells along with the service traction light and trac turned off. Later as i was driving on freeway with these lights on it began to make a grinding noise. I pulled onto the service road and the brakes failed to stop the car so i blew thru the stop sign and pulled into a lot. I turned the car off and let it sit a few minutes. When i restarted i was able to return home with all the lights on. Since then the brakes have been serviced, the tie rod ends replaced, a number of failed repair attempts and $2000 later, same problem. After every trip to the mechanic and 500 plus dollars the problem comes back in about a month. This car often will not start, dead as a door nail. By leaving the key in the ignition, turning it to on and not touching anything for ten minutes, it will reset and start right up. Replacing starter does not solve problem.

Had issues with electrical in 2015 in which gas gauge and other gauges, speedometer were "bouncing". Auto repair determined it was the fuel pump and replaced it to the tune of $600. This year, while driving at highway speeds when car suddenly looses all power and turns off. Brought back to same repair shop who stated battery cables were loose and tightened them free of charge. Now 4-5 months later and same issue is occurring which happened 4 times today. Twice while making a hard turn. Terminals are completely tight. Earlier this year could not turn ignition key and tapped it with a hammer to get it to turn. I have been reading quite a bit about an ignition switch recall, but no mention of it by the dealer for two recall fixes this year regarding the ignition key and fob, and some cover on the engine.

My wife owns a 2002 monte carlo with 60,00 miles on it that shuts down no notice, just like you turned the key off. The last episode was at 68 mph on an interstate. I managed to coast the car over to the edge of the highway under an over pass, but it was a terrifying event.

Turn signal failure:beginning in 2005 through to 2007 the turn signals would work intermittently.while under warranty the vehicle was taken to the dealership.they indicated that there was no problem.once warranty was expired there was nothing i could do.i did find that turning the hazard signals on for 5-10 seconds would sometimes correct the problem and the turn signal would work.finally after many hours searching the internet i found several postings indicating that there was a faulty hazard light switch, the turn signals are also controlled by the hazard light switch.in october 2007 i spent $399 to have the hazard light switch repaired.please insist that the dealership replace the hazard light switch and not add on additional parts like the turn signal arm etc.my dealership first quoted me $850 stating that the turn signal arm must also be replaced to correct the issue.since the repair all is fine.i do believe that gm/chevrolet should be responsible for the cost of repair since it is a defect in their design.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that the vehicle stalled numerous times randomly for months. The dealer was notified of the failure several times, but did not provide a permanent remedy. The contact later received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v400000 (electrical system). The recall repair was performed, but the failure recurred weeks later. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available.

I have a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo ls.about 1 year ago my turn signals quit working randomly.it seemed to be the worst on hot days.i would leave my home or work with them working properly and then at a random point during my drive they would no longer work.gm has recalled other makes and models for similar problems.however, the monte carlos have never been recalled.after searching for a potential solution to this problem, i have found that it seems to be a very common problem on many similar cars that gm makes.most people have said that it is related to the hazard switch in the dash board.this is a relatively cheap fix however it is also a major safety hazard since i never know when the turn signals will or will not work.it seems to be luck of the draw, which is very dangerous.thank you for your consideration on this problem.

We have been having problems with our car starting.the battery has been replaced.we have disconnectedthen reconnected the battery, sometimes this works to start the car other times it does not.the power locks no longer work.one day the security light comes on, sometimes its notyesterday, we couldn't even get the car to start. Today, the car was running and the cluster gauges were not even working. We bought this car brand new out of the showroom.what a lemon it turned out to be.sadly, it now sits in our driveway as it is not dependable to drive anywhere.there is a recall to replace the key rings, and an inset in the key slot or a cover on the key head instead gm should be recalling these models to replace the ignitions, since there are other people posting online about these same issues.

Problem with "no power" which caused inoperative operation to the vehicle.(nar)*ph

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to respond and stalled without warning. The vehicle was able to restarted after multiple attempts. In addition, the entire instrument panel failed. On one occasion, the vehicle coasted past a stop sign and another vehicle crashed into the front driver side of the vehicle.a police report was filed and the contact sustained neck injuries that did not require medical attention.the vehicle was towed to a dealer but the failure was unable to be determined. The contact received nhtsa campaign number: 14v400000 (electrical system). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and refused to compensate the contact. The approximate failure mileage was 130,000.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that the key became lodged within the ignition switch and prevented the vehicle from being started. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 92,000.

The power windows stopped working ,and then the security system wouldn't let me start the car. Also the car started running hot for no reason at all.

Loss of traction control and anti lock brakes in my car.my vehicle has allowed these safety features to quit working and after replacing the parts that the dealer said needed to be replaced, the vehicle's system does not recognize the new sensor and part, thus not allowing the traction control and abs to work.after researching this on the internet, it seems to be a very common problem in gm vehicles.

I started the car up and i heard a pop and saw a blue flame. After repairing the car costing $3240.74 it once again caught another fire please help.

I have a 2002 chevy monte carlo ls that has been experiencing electrical problems.the cruise control light comes on spontaneously without the button being pressed and when this light spontaneously comes on, the heating/cooling systems do not turn onwhen dial is turned on.when the cruise control light turns off, the heating/cooling system works without any further problem.i have called two different dealerships in my area and spoke to two different service advisors and they are not aware of any issues yet there are forums where other owners have been experiencing this problem for some time now.

The lights on the inside and outside flickered while driving, the dealer stated nothing was wrong. Ts

Owned since new 2002 monte carlo.this vehicle is onthe 3rd ignition switch.the latest just this year.each time, it has effected a different part of the electrical system. The cruise control, the radio, the security system. There is an o-ring in the fuel line under the hood that was faulty, causing fuel to leak in the engine compartment.the power window regulator has been replace twice on the drivers door, once on the passenger door.there has been an antifreeze leak, causing the engine to overheat.the fan cooling assembly has been replace.the door window button has been replaced 5 times.the light bulb continued to burn out each time.the steering assembly column has been replaced, and continues to make a clunking sound.when it was recalled, they replaced it at the dealer and my high beam function has never worked since that repair.the catalytic converter went out right after the emissions warranty expired, within a few thousand miles.current mileage is just over 120,000 miles.that is 40,000 miles per ignition switch.this ignition switch recall currently by gmshouldhave included the monte carlo.

I can't believe gm is not being forced to issue a recall on their cluster problems.i'm having the problem with my 2002 monte carlo ss. Not just the speedometer, but the oil pressure, rpms, and temp. The only thing on my panel that works is the gas indicator. It all started when i hit 70,000 and i'm now at 78,000. This is making me crazy and our local gm dealer quoted $680 to repair, and said it must be repaired at a gm dealer because of all of the work and programming that needs to be done. I loved this car until this major problem started. After reading all of the other issues and gm's lack of recall, i'm real tempted to leave gm -- and we've been gm for three generations in my family and this.

Passlock theft-deterrent failure, 2002 chevrolet monte carlo, 35,600 miles.

Security light, has been on several months, dealers ship says the computer will not let them find the problem, mean while nothing has been done, it refuses to start, i wait 10 minutes or so then it starts.

I own a 2002 chevy monte carlo. About october 10th, 2017 i was coming up on a traffic light and when i applied the brakes, the pedal would not go down. I was going about 45 mph by the grace of god i was able to blast through an intersection and miss everyone, everything!. Rattled i guess i shut the car off when i regained my composer i started the car and everything was fine. I did not want to believe this happened! i thought i did something wrong maybe had my foot under the brake pedal or something. Have been driving the car since 2 weeks ago was stranded in a parking lot, would not start. Had the car towed home, tried to start it and started right up. Now service track light is on and anti lock brakes is on and service engine light is on sometime and the cruise light is on. Yesterday wife was driving the car and same thingno brakes, you could not push the pedal down it is as if there is something under the pedal it's that solid.my concern for my own safety as well as other monte carlo owners is most important. If either time we would have been on a expressway where we could not turn to a shoulder this would be catastrophic . Called the service manager where the car was purchased, also harbor chevy in michigan city, in and gates chevy in south bend, indiana, all said they have never heard of this before. Got on the internet and found similar posts in car complaints without any problem, seems odd gm does not know anything about this.for every ones own safety this should be a redundant system in older cars you would not lose all brakes. Could understand if you lost anti lock part but still could stop. This has to be a overlooked flaw in design and gm should be made to correct this before someone gets killed. If someones been killed by this how could they tell you that he lost his brakes?thank youmike

I went to turn and my service traction control and abs lights came on. While turning, i lost power to the breaks and felt and heard a grinding/whining noise in the brakes and could not stop. The vehicle now has a whining noise when turning without braking at all.

I was driving (with my children in car) and the car just shut off. I had no power brakes or power steering. Luckily, one child was in drivers ed & knew to put car in neutral & we coasted to a stop. Once i calmed down, i drove my monte ss to the dealer and described what happened. The kept car for a week and insisted there was nothing wrong! i drive 1-3 hrs for work daily and i didn't trust the vehicle on interstate. I purchased another vehicle 6 days later but gave this car to my child for in town driving. I was never the wiser until i heard about the recall yesterday & it's description. The monte should be involved in recall too. I was preparing to purchase a new impala but now i believe gm is still not being honest about all the makes & models involved with ignition problems.

As the nhtsa is aware, gm has recently issued a third recall for leaking valve cover gaskets that have started fires in this same vehicle. By sheer coincidence on the same day that gm announced this third recall i paid my mechanic over $300.00 to replace these valve cover gaskets and i want gm to reimburse me for this. It was posing a fire hazard and we transport our young grandchildren in this vehicle. I have repeatedly asked gm why i never received any recall notices relative to the leaking valve covers. They have not answered this question. I want gm to reimburse me for this repair.

Two issues: (1) the intake manifold on my 2002 monte carlo 3.8l v6 exploded when the ignition key was turned, and it exploded with such force that the oil cap (screwed in with thick threads) was blown off. Had my mechanic had his head under there when his counterpart turned the key it would have killed him as shrapnel flew everywhere. Gm had a recall regarding the exploding of intake manifolds on this exact engine but it only went up to mdl yr 2000. The circumstances and effects are identical including the engine model. I have photographs of the carnage this explosion caused but would need your email address to send them to you. (2) as the nhtsa is aware, gm has recently issued a third recall for leaking valve cover gaskets that have started fires in this same vehicle. By sheer coincidence on the same day that gm announced this third recall i paid my mechanic over $300.00 to replace these valve cover gaskets and i want gm to reimburse me for this. It was posing a fire hazard and we transport our young grandchildren in this vehicle. Although gm has admitted in writing that they have my correct address on file as registered with the massachusetts department of motor vehicles they do not know why i was never notified about the oil leaks causing fires nor will they elaborate as to why or indicate that they will research why i was never notified. Their records will bear out that i was never informed of any such recall. I am getting nothing from gm but the standard party line and need them to look at and repair this intake manifold issue now. It is my only transportation and is dead. I have asked for them to provide a rental but they have not responded. Please, your assistance is desperately needed. My wife and i are raising our two young grandchildren and i need to be able to get to work. We can not afford a rental until such time as gm decides to address this issue.

Went to start car one day. Turned key and heard loud pop. Rushed to lift good and top of motor on fire. Luckily had extinguisher right inside garage door and immediately extinguished. Plastic intake cover was blown apart in multiple pieces. After searching on the internet i found there have been many of this same incident, somewhere claiming that it comes from a faulty fuel shift of valve or something. If you notice with low miles, this car is barely driven and always babied.

I own a lemon of a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo ss. Nothing but problems since i bought it last year. Steering column problems, cost $200.00 to fix, catalytic converter replaced, covered by warranty thank god. Today it is in the shop again for leaky gasket and wheel bearing/ hub replacement which is costing another $500.00. This was bad because the abs breaks didn't always work which was scary since i wondered when they were going to give out totally and i would be in an accident. The transmission solenoid also needed to be replaced which cost us another $700.00. Is there any help for us? i wonder what will be next with this car, it is a nice looking car, but it sucks mechanically!! please help! any suggestions?

My 2002 monte carlo gm 3.4l engine leaks oil into cooling system.this is a known problem with the 3.4l engine.several people i know that own this very engine experience the same problem.it is believed that dexcool antifreeze installed in the car when new, reacts with the intake manifold gasket causing deterioration of the gasket.this results in engine oil seeping into the cooling system contaminating the radiator, sensors and all parts related.gm dealers would not fix, car just out of warranty.

Son owns 2002 monte carlo coupe.recently, the catalytic converter plugged and backed up heat into the intake manifold and burnt a hole into the intake manifold.it is not allowing coolant into the intake manifold.he went to carcomplaints.com and found many others with the same problem, some even having fires develop.the car is sitting in the shop still, x 1-1/2 months, with lotsof repair required and cost.

2002 chevrolet monte carlo. Only has 59,000 miles. Car stalled in traffic. No crash/accident resulted. Intake gasket leaked anti-freeze into engine and oil lubrication system. The anti-freeze got into the ball bearings (as well as rest of engine) and caused corrosion damage and misfires. The engine threw a rod. The nearest chevrolet dealership says that the engine must be replaced, and will cost $5,000 dollars. I purchased the vehicle new in june of 2002.the car currently has 120,000 miles on it's 3.8 v6 engine.every 40,000 miles we have had to put a new catalytic converter on the car.the check engine light comes on and the code reads catalytic converter bad.the dealership has made the repair under warranty each time, but can not identify the reason for the converter going bad.i have heard this is a common enough problem that gm extended the warranty on the converters for 10 years or 120,000 miles.the car runs well and gets good mileage.the check engine light never comes on, except when the converter has gone bad.i have tried e-mailing gm, but get no response from them.what are my rights here?

I own a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo 53,000 miles on it with intermediate shaft problems and intake manifold gasket problems. Both are apparently common on this make and model. Chevrolet should make these repairs. The steering can be affected, which is a hazard and the gasket could cause engine freeze up while driving, also a hazard.

Vehicle would overheat and loses coolant while driving. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop, and mechanic determined that the intake manifold gasket needed to be replaced.dealer was notified and informedconsumer that problem was not covered under a recall.

Lower coolant light come on because of poor sealant of the lower intake manifold. This resulted in anti freeze leaking. *mr

Car part recalled. Got notice in july 09. Car caught fire because of part in sep 09. 2002 monte carlo. I was told that the car's warranty had run out! part was just recalled this year. They just found out that the part is defective. Denied claim. 9 mo old and 3 yr old in car when it caught fire on expressway.

When my wife or i attempt to turn on the high beams in a poorly lit area/region the lights shut off completely.we almost entirely lost where we were on the road and had to slow down and make an abrupt stop.after playing with the switch for a couple moments we finally got the high beams on.now, a car comes from the other side we attempt to power off the high beams and switch back to low beams and the car stays stuck with high beams on and we are now blinding on coming traffic.fortunately there was no accident involved, however, either event could have easily led to an accident especially if it were to happen in adverse weather.please advise as this should be a recall.

Last night while driving locally both headlamps suddenly stopped working.the parking lights worked but i could not manually or automatically get the headlamps to work.

Turn signal switch that includes head lights. You flick you high beams on and when you try and switch to low your head lights go out. You much flick your turn signal repeatedly to get them back on. In the mean time you are swerving all over the road in a panic. How often does it happen almost every day.

Headlights go completely out when switching to or from high and low beam. Returning switch to previous beam will generally make them start working again.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that the head lamp lenses had been oxidized and that there was a film build up which affected the visibility of the low beams while the vehicle was in motion causing the lighting to be dim. The contact also stated that the key less entry function failed intermittently and that upon entering the vehicle, it would not start. The contact was able to utilize the owners manual to override the system by either disconnecting and reconnecting the battery cable or resetting the computer. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 2,400.

Light switch and high beam is defective in steering column.

Turn signals will not always work. Replaced the hazard/signal switch located behind the dash only to have the same problem. Pressing on the dash near the hazard switch or pressing the hazard switch will return signal to normal operation for a short time. While i was replacing the original, i noticed placing a very slight pressure on the switch assembly will cause the signal to either stop or start working. I believe the problem is with both the switch design as well as the dashboard design. Hot/humid weather appears to irritate the situation causing failure more often. Researching the problem via web searches finds many owners with the same problem. This problem also seems to be common to many gm model cars.

Turn signals fail to work and headlights go off when you are driving on interstate or local roads. Sometimes the headlights will come back on in a few seconds, other times it takes as long as thirty seconds

Head lights on my monte carlo 2002 there has always been something not right. When i bought the car one night when i was driving out the highway and all of a sudden the lights just go off scaring me to death. In a few seconds they came back on. I have had this do this to me several times i bought the car in 2003. Now on august 28th 2010 i had went to a friends house and later that night when i went to leave the lights didn't work at all unless i held the light switch on the column for bright or dim. So now that is the only way i have head lights now if i hold the switch on the steering column so i don't go to far at night. Don't have the money to fix them. There needs to be a recall on this i also know someone else that has a monte carlo and has the same problem but hers just goes off on her like mine use to.

Headlight high/low switch on multi-function stalk fails and prevents switching from high to low beam, especially hard to switch from high to low.dealer said entire stalk needs to be replaced and part along is over $300 not including labor.there have been times when headlights go out complete when switching between high and low beams.many reports of this problem on internet with several gm models from about 2000-2003 model years.

Turn signals go dead intermittently and then start working again.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo ss. The contactstated the hazard and turn signal lights would sporadically fail without warning. The contact changed the fuses yet the failure continuously recurred. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was contacted. The failure mileage was 100,000.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo. While driving approximately 35 mph on normal road conditions; proceeding to make a left turn the turn signal selector control mode was engaged; followed by no power response. The driver observed that both turn signals were inoperative.in addition, whenever the high beam headlights were activated the exterior headlights and tail lights failed without warning. The authorized dealer was notified of the failures.the vehicle has not been repaired. The contact has concerns of the safety risk involved. The failure mileage was 95,000and the current mileage was 103,000.

Headlamps continue to fill with moisture and now water leaking in after every rainfall.headlamps in danger of failing and lights obscured by vapor.have removed, dried out, no cracks or seals broken but problem persists. Other complaints from gm owners with same problem have experienced complete electrical failure for same problem.

My turn signal lights don't work sometimes, i have to depress the hazard light button for a couple seconds and the they work for a while but the problem keeps coming back, i have read about many complaint about the hazard light switch being the problem but i think the manufacturer of the vehicle should be responsible for the repair.i own a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo.

The power windows stopped working ,and then the security system wouldn't let me start the car. Also the car started running hot for no reason at all.

I to have a 2002 monte carlo ss,that when driving at night the lights, inside and out, flicker on and off.other cars coming at me can also see this.

Purchased a chevrolet monte carlo new in 2002.on 9/29/06, i had to take the vehicle in for repairs due to non-functioning turn signals and hazard light.the required repair involved replacement of a hazard light switch which is the conduit for the turn signals as well.hazard light switch had been used very slightly over last four years, however recently used for a constant 25 minutes prior to switch failure.i consider this to be faulty considering the little use.also, noticed on nhtsa web site that around the 2000 - 2003 time period other gm models were recalled for faulty hazard light switch and suspect that it's a manufacturing problem.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo.the contact stated that the turn signals work intermittently.in addition, the hazard lights would not illuminate when the turn signals failed.as of september 20, 2007, the dealer had not inspected the vehicle.the failure mileage was 70,000 and current mileage was 82,000.

Turn signals on my 2002 monte carlo stopped working...dealership said was hazard switch.. Also sd they were having a lot of other monte carlos coming in with the same problem. .i feel dealership should be responsible for this issue..

Sealed beam headlight assemblies gradual internal moisture build-up till condensation on the lenses get trapped on inside surface causing diffusing and diminishing front headlight transmission.internal moisture that builds up over time and exposure to rain cannot be removed.adds to risk of corrosion, electrical short, explosive pressure build-up when heated through use andtotal failure of headlight assemblies.only remedy is model wide recall for safety inspection and replacement including inspection advisory toowner warning of potential problem and safety hazard.manufacturer is reluctant to issue a recall due to the high cost of replacement headlight assemblies of over $250 each.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo.while driving 55 mph at night, the headlights dimmed.the contact activated the dimmer switch and the lights illuminated.however, 40 miles later, the failure recurred.there were no warning lights, indicators, or noises present.the vehicle was taken to a dealer, but was not inspected.the contact showed the dealer nhtsa action number pe06017 (exterior lighting, exterior lighting:headlights, exterior lighting:headlights:switch).the dealer stated that the action number was for the chevrolet impala.the vehicle has not been repaired.the current and failure mileages were 76,000.

Headlights would flicker when in use at any speed. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

When i flip on my bright lights, if it doesn't make a clicking noise, all of my lights will go out in app.10 seconds has happened about 10 times now.

My turn signals on my 2002 chevy monte carlo have never worked properly. They work sometimes and don't work most of the time. I have taken it to my dealership and they cant seem to give me a resolution. My warranty is now out and the signals still don't work. I bought this car new and cant understand why the problem has never been resolved.

2002 chevrolet monte carlo ss - turn signals suddenly stop working. Found out by accident that turning on emergency flashers will somehow reset the lights and then the turn signals work again. This has been occurring for the past year. Found reports on mycarstats.com that others are having a similar problem.

I am now having signal failure on my 2002 monte carlo ss.my signals only work when they want to and it is more often than not that they do not want to work. This is a huge concern for me because this problem has almost caused a few too many accidents and i believe chevy needs to do something about it before it causes any major accidents or kills someone!

On a day to day basis my turn signal works in my 2002 monte carlo when it feels like one minute it may work the next it wont work for days. I see the same problem in my girlfriends 2001 monte carlo so i suspect something is wrong with all turn signal in 2000 and up monte carlos...i know this problem is not new to you but what should we do.. My girlfriend recently received 2 tickets because of this problem. What do we have 2 do to get this fixed or was it a recall?

When i turn on the blinkers sometimes they work and sometimes they don't. When they don't no light comes on at all ( no blinker on the dashboard or on the outside lights). On numerous occasions my life flashed before my eyes when i was nearly struck by other vehicles while trying to make a turn and my turn signals weren't operating properly. I went to an auto parts store and they stated that the problem was a common one. They stated that it was the flasher assembly (in the steering column) costs$ 299.00. I feel this issue should be looked into . I am a police officer and if i didn't have this issue with my own vehicle i wouldn't have believed anyone else's story.please contact me by phone or e-mail thank you rich.

The contact owned 2002 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that the vehicle was serviced at apple valley chevrolet (650 foxcroft ave, martinsburg, wv 25401) for a fuel control sensor replacement. The vehicle would not start after it was serviced at the dealer then caught on fire while the contact's husband was trying to start it up. The contact's husband was able to put out the fire with a hose. No police report was filed. The vehicle was still at the contact's residence. The dealer and manufacturer were not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 96,000.

I started the car up and i heard a pop and saw a blue flame. After repairing the car costing $3240.74 it once again caught another fire please help.

Gas gauge all of a sudden stopped working and i ran out of gas!

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, a strong burning fuel odor was present inside and outside of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the front valve cover gasket needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v701000 (engine and engine cooling). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 193,000.

Went out to start car. Turned on key, set radio. Then turned key to start engine with a resulting loud explosion from under hood. In hurry to get up hood and extinguish fire experienced burns on hands from lifting hood and a fuel line that was squirting fuel/flames. Fire extinguisher extinguished flames. Upper intake manifold is blow apart with multiple sensors destroyed. Thank god this happened at home with an extinguisher handy and not driving down the road with no time to slow down.

3 new fuel pump rails installed from recall ( gas gauge does not work). The problem still occurs, the gauge works for a small amount of time after new fuel rail is installed, then fails, leaving no way to check the amount of fuel left in the tank.

My 2002 chevy montecarlo ss the gas gauge is very erratic it shows you having a full tank of a gas when you don't it bounces back and forth like this no matter if it's full or not very frustrating to know when to fill up...

Tl *- the contactownsa 2002 chevrolet monte carlo.onfebruary 3, 2007 the contact started the vehicle, then turned it off quickly after realizing she had forgotten something in her home.the contact went back inside the home, then returned to the vehicle.the contact started the vehicle a second time and heard an explosion coming from under the vehicle loud enoughthat the neighbors cameand offered assistance.while inside the vehicle the contact smelled smoke.the contact's husband opened the hood and witnessed a fire coming from the engine.the contact's husband used a fire extinguisher to put out the fire.the vehicle was transported to the rizza chevrolet 8200 south harlem ave, bridgeview il 60455, tel 708-594-9090 for service.the contact filed a complaint with gmc #71-478219613, and was told to wait 48 hours for an agent to be assigned to the case. The consumer stated the failure maybe related to recall 04v0900000 updated 02/27/07.

2002 chevrolet monte carlo withabs and service engine light problems and concerns**ccthe traction light illuminated as well. The transmission was replaced 2 months after the consumer purchased the vehicle, because the vehicle wouldn't go into 3rd gear. The steering shaft was lubricated. The consumer was informed that the ebcm needed to be replaced and without the replacement, the abs would not work so the traction control and abs light would remain on. The water pump and intake gasket was replaced due them leaking. The fuel injector was replaced due to it being stuck open. The tire pressure monitoring light illuminated, the dealer sealed the rear wheels.

The driver information center-fuel used is always off at least 1.5 gallons when filling the tank.this in turn causes the miles per gallon to also be off.one dealer mechanic said they have a problem with the unit.but my dealer says this is normal.when on a trip, my brothers two cadillacs both read correct fuel used.the gm 800 help line never returns my calls. *la

Started car and heard a loud boom and then smoke under the hood and intake cover and harness on fire

I have a 2002 chevy monte carlo ss and i am having electrical issues the windshield wipers don't always function properly neither do the turning signals my seats will move on there own ,there is a ticking noise coming from the doors once keys are taken out of the ignition also i have a problem when pumping gas into the car the pump keeps shutting off unless i hold it at a certain angle.

The car's fuel gage stopped working. The car wouldn't turn over when i started it so i got a new battery since it said my old one was bad, but it's still not working. The security light is on and i don't understand why and if this is affecting it from turning on

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo. While driving 2 mph, the accelerator pedal was depressed, but the vehicle failed to accelerate. The contact observed flames under the vehicle. The fire department extinguished the fire. The fire department stated that the fire occurred due to a fuel leak. Prior to the fire, there were no leaks present. The contact also stated that the fire occurred after the vehicle was fueled. A police report was filed and there were no injuries. The vehicle was towed to the contact's residence. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that a case manager would be assigned to the case. The failure mileage was approximately 32,000.

I was driving and my gas needle started going up and down. Now it don't work . If i put $5 of gas in it go to full.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated the driver's door lock failed and caused the drivers door to remain unlocked. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 189,000. The current mileage was 191,671.

Dt:the contact stated when opening the driver's side door the door will not stay open. The door will close unless he holds it open. The vehicle has been to the dealer, and they replaced the door stop. The replacement of the part did not repair the problem.also, the contact was having problems with the brakes. While pressing on the brakes he could feel some type movement in the brake pedal. This only happened when backing the vehicle out of the driveway. The driveway is on a slope position. The dealer indicated the braking problem was normal . The dealer stated the rotors were out of round. Updated 01/25/06.

When warm from a standing stop the transmission will shudder under hard acceleration . Also up shifts become erratic and very harsh.

Hello i was told i could complain to you and possibly get refunded.my car currently has about 76,900 miles on it.my brake line rusted out on me, and i had $700 of work done on my brakes, at monroe in lowell, ma, on chelmsford st. (rt. 110).i was told i could complain about my entire brakes rusting out here. Thanks for your time...updated 07/15/14updated 3/23/2015

The brake lines are rusted out car only has 55,000 miles it is sitting outside but on blacktop in our drive way. We went to use it and the dash lit like mad checked brake fluid it was low drove it and almost did,nt make it home with brakes.

I went to turn and my service traction control and abs lights came on. While turning, i lost power to the breaks and felt and heard a grinding/whining noise in the brakes and could not stop. The vehicle now has a whining noise when turning without braking at all.

Abs light traction control light and air bag light are constantly on..,since ive owned it

I have a 2002 monte carlo ss. Without warning the abs light came on. Notified dealer and they said was ok to drive until they could look at it. Turned out to be a sensor as they thought. The problem was fixed but at significant cost. Gm has designed the sensor such that it is part of the hub, so the whole thing had to be replaced. Instead of $200 i had to pay $775. At 46000 miles i would not expect this. I have had other vehicles with abs with over 100000 miles and never had the first problem.

Car pulsates when braking. I took car into repair shop and was told before inspection that they had been receiving a lot of service work from the brake systems on the newer monte carlos with the 6th generation body style. Upon inspection, it was determined as discussed prior to inspection that the front rotors were warped and the rear rotors are rust pitted. They also reported that the rear caliper was leaking.

I was told today that the rotors have to be turned and the brakes replaced..this is now the second time this has been done...one time it was done on a "in shop repair order, not sent to gm" when i questioned why it was not being sent to gm i was told if they send it to gm then i have to pay for the brake job.there have been several other in house repairs corrections made.when i inquired to the general manager he said that's the way it is done so they get their money. *nlm

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo.while braking from 40 mph, the vehicle made a loud clicking noise.the vehicle was difficult to brake and the pedal extended to the floorboard when depressed.the vehicle was taken to a mechanic for inspection and the tires were rotated and the brakes were inspected, however, the failure continued.the dealer stated that her vin was excluded from nhtsa campaign id number 04v287000 (service brakes, hydraulic).the powertrain was unknown.the current mileage was 64,000 and failure mileage was 62,000.

On our 2002 chevrolet monte carlo the service traction system and abs light comes on. Now the brakes occasionally feel like they are trying to lock up when coming to a stop. A mechanic said it was about $1500.00 to repair but it would be fine without repair. Now we are not so sure. Others have said that even dealerships don't know how to fix the problem. Changing the brake pads and rotors works for a very short time then the lights come back on.

Abs and tac off light come onstay on and service traction system light comes on took to shop if didn't fix (meaning i have no antilock brakes and they thing its the abs motor pump think) i wont be able to get a inspection sticker and they said it will cost 1600 to fixand went on web and seen many hundreds of 2002 monte owners are having the same problem.

2001-2002 gm models, abs system malfunctioning, randomly turning on. Heard many problems about this, needs to be fixed.

When the brakes were applied, thefront end of the vehicle vibrated extremely hard.

When the brakes were applied, the front of the vehicle vibrated extremely hard.

Abs warning light illuminated while vehicle was running. Dealership informed consumer that the problem pertained to a traction control failure. The problem was not resolved.*tc

At driving the speed of 30 miles per hour, going around a bend, there was a popping noise, i then lost control of the steering and had no brakes. Trying to steer the car left around the bend the car proceededto go straight. Causing the car to go up the driveway apron through a yard lodging the car into a shrub ,stopping 5 inches from going into a garge. I had the car towed to metro chevrolet, was contacted by dealer saying it sounded like a mechanical error. Again contacted by the service department, the next day saying the car was driven over a curb, or hit something. I explained the car went through the driveway apron, did not hit curb, and resting on a shrub will not cause the damage that it substained. Dealer refused to take responibility. I proceeded to take pitcures of the sceen of the accident, showing the path of the car. The driver side went over the curb, the passenger side went over the apron of the drive. All the damage was done to the passenger side of the car.i try to explain to them that something broke before contact was made with the curb. I am reporting this problem for the safety of my family, and anyone else who may have the same problem before it gets to the point of an accident for someone else.at this time my insurance is paying for the repairs, i amtrying to get the dealership to honor the claim for the malfunction.

When the vehicle was driven at speeds of 60 mph or even 30 mph, the consumer noticed pulsationin the brake pedal, however, when approaching exit ramps and when more pressure was applied to the pedal, a more severe pulsation would cause the steering wheel to vibrate violently.other problems:the driver's window switch was inoperative and the front brakes would grind when stopping due to rotor problem. *sc

2002 monte carlo : at 29,000 miles needs all front and rear brake rotors resurfaced due to warping and new brake pads. This was described to us as normal and not covered under any warranties. When pressing on the brakes vehicle shook heavily. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the rotors wore out prematurely. Rotors had been replaced at 5,000 miles.

2002 monte carlo - at 38000 miles this will be the 2nd time the brake rotors on this car need to be repaired. The front end vibrates when applying brakes at any speed. Gm service dealer advised me to wait until the pads were worn this time before repairing rotors?????? the customer service representative i talked to suggested taking the car to a different dealership for a 2nd opinion?????it is unacceptable that a high perfomance car would have such a defect or design problem.

Vehicle has had to have brake rotors replaced 5 times in 5 years, and turned 3 other times.dealership and private mechanic have said repeatedly that they see a lot of this and that it is a factory problem, but no one seems to know what the problem is or how to fix it other than 300-400 at a time.

2002 monte carlo ss started:at about 13000 miles started vibrating when braking.took it in to the dealership at about 15000 miles and they said the rotors needed to be turned.i paid for that to be done.at about 28,000 again started vibrating while braking.took it to a brake specialist and he said the rotors needed replacing.called the dealership and they said they could not pay for this to be done (not in warranty coverage) so we had the outside specialist put on rotors with a 50,000 mile warranty. I see many other folks have this same problem.why does gm not cover this?i thought when i bought a new vehicle i wouldn't have to sink more money into repairs until after the 36,000 warranty was up.hope gm straightens this out.i was looking at a used 2001 grand am for my daughter but i see there are many of the same complaints on that vehicle.guess my life long relationship with gm vehicles is becoming questionable?hope gm gets this straightened out before they loose other devoted gm folks.

When the brakes are appliedvehicle involuntarily changes lanes.took vehicle to dealer, and dealer replaced the rotors. However, problem has not been corrected.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet monte carlo.the contact heard a knocking noise in the steering column everytime he turned the wheel.the dealer was able to duplicate the failure, but could not determine the cause.the contact was informed that the only way it could be repaired was by taking the steering column apart for inspection.the vehicle was out of warranty; therefore, the repairs may have to be made at the contact's expense.he received a recall notice for the spark plugs and now an oil leak is present.the contact will have the recall repair performed.the nhtsa campaign id number was unknown.the failure mileage was 40,000 and current mileage was 74,000.updated 07/10/09. *ljupdated 07/10/09.

Noticed a knocking sound in the steering column at a very low mileage (25000?) and inquired of the dealer.told they could find nothingwrong..had it checked by an aftermarket repair shop at about 40,000 and was told they couldn't find the problem but that chevy's were having a real bad problem with their steering columns..vehicle now has 56,000 and am now told by chevy dealer i need to replace entire steering column and rack and pinion at my expense.dealer mentioned this is very common problem but didn't know of any recalls yet. Cost estimate is $1000.00.

I purchased the vehicle in may and since then i been hearing this clunking noise coming from the steering column. I called gm and they told me that it was the intermediate steering shaft that need to b replaced because they got out a lot on the vehicles. I told them of they know that y didn't they recall them and the guy told me because the safety commission never toldthem to. Im very upset and feel that this is a safety issue! i replaced this piece numerous time and it keeps making this noise again! i don't have money like that to keep replacing this part. Please help me by recalling this part because my kids are a factor here and this can be a major accident.

My 2002 chevy monte carlo ss has a clunking sound coming from the steering, i had this fixed 2 1/2 years ago and it has been happeningagain now for about 8 months. I was waiting for a recall but have heard nothing yet.

2002 chev monte carlo ss experienced "popping" in steering wheel at 21,862 miles and again at 45,299 miles. Both times dealer invoice insinuated that steering shaft was replaced. At 84,000 miles this happened again. Took back to dealer who told me that in fact they followed the gm service bulletins at the time and only lubed the steering shaft. A service bulletin from 8/1/04 said to replace, but this was after the second incident and no one called to let me know (and of course i was under the impression that the replacement had already occurred.) the steering wheel felt very loose and unstable and i feel if left unchecked could have resulted in failure and accident.

I drove a new monte carlo and it is apparent the steering effort is extremely hard and will result in drivers fingers becoming bent and twisted.dt

I have a 2002 monte carlo .the problem with the car is that both doors passenger and driver door has damaged and bended both fenders. I have seen a lot of monte carlo cars like mine. With the doors bending the fenders it's hard to get in and out of my car and it also causes water to get in my doors every time it rains causing my speakers to not play right.

Started car and heard a loud boom and then smoke under the hood and intake cover and harness on fire

I recently purchased a used 2002 chevy monte carlo. However i have been having intermittent problems with the vehicle not starting.it has had the recalled ignition switch replaced but every once in a while the vehicle still doesn't start. I have done some investigating on the web and discovered it is a very common problem of many general motors makes between the 1999-2004 modal years.the vehicles vats system (vehicle anti theft system)will not allow the vehicle to start.when the vehicle doesn't start i have to wait 10minutes and low and behold it will start.this is a very common problem that is not only aggravating but could be potentially dangerous if the vehicle needs to be moved in an emergency situation.please make gm recall these vehicles! sincerely [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Recall no.14v400

I took my vehicle to have service done on a recall involving potential under hood fire to replace valve covers.the oil was/is leaking onto the manifold and causing the car to smoke.i barely drive this car and it is still leaking oil onto the manifold and smoking.now the dealership will not fix what they supposedly fixed.

I was driving down a busy street at approximately 25 miles per hour and my car accelerated on its own.i had to step on my brakes to prevent from rear ending the vehicle in front of me.attention when i drive. However, less than one week later, i noticed that my cruise control light was on and i had not touched the button to activate cruise control at all. I never use this feature and couldn't understand how this occurred.i then begin to notice that the cruise control sign would activate itself and my i was no longer driving at the speed that i thought i was.i do need to back up and state that i had a big problem with my abs light going on and off and had taken my car to martin chevrolet to have this problem repaired.after approximately 4-5 visits of the same problem and out of pocket hundreds of dollars, the service technician found the problem and fixed it at the tune of $200.i do commend him for digging deep to find out what the problem was and he never gave up trying to find a solution.the last item i would like to report is the issue of me being shocked with small jolts of what i can only describe as small electric shocks when i would open my car door.this dates back to the first year that i purchased my brand new car.

Cruise control cancels it's self at low speed.vech under warr when problem started.vech not covered under lemon law, so dealer and gm reps are ignoring problem.must saydealer did try to repair.have nearly been rear-ended several times as cruise kicked out and we were slowing and didn't realize it.

My chevrolet window is bad and it threw a rod for no apparent reason.

Dt: since buying the vehicle the consumer had a problem with the rotors.they have been replaced twice.while braking the rotors caused the steering wheel to shake violently.took vehicle to the dealer for a third time yesterday.the dealer said this was an issue with the lamination on the rotors.the consumerdid not have rotors replaced because he was afraid he would be charged for the repair as well the dealer placing the same type of rotors that have been rusting in the past.the mechanic noted air bubbles in the casting in the rotorswhichthe caused the rusting. *sc

Window regulator has gone out three times on two windows. 2008, 2010, 2014. The whole system is a bad design and cable jumps track at the least of bit jarring.this is a scary thing to happen as when the window falls it is a loud popping sound.twice window fell down at car wash. Once traveling 55 miles an hour. Thought someone shot at the car.if window falls while no one is around theft could occur or if raining it will soak your car.someone needs to investigate how these window regulators are made because they are not safe.talked to person who installed them and he had two regulators go out on is f150 ford truck and he reported it too.also happened to my family member too two of his regulators had to be replaced on his f150 truck.i don't know how many complaints you receive but something has to be done.this a safety hazard.also turn signal intermittently goes out and i noted that this a major complaint to your site.

Rear view mirror does not dim automatically when exposed to light. Consumer is temporarily blinded by other drivers.could cause a bad accident.since calling in this report, the dealer has replaced the mirror.the replacement mirror operates better than the original.it still however has the effect of blinding the driver.*jg
