I have had this same problem since shortly after purchase of my vehicle.(purchased new september 2001...has 47,000 miles in 2006.)the leather on the driver's side air bag keeps pulling away from the seat and exposing the seat.the dealer has looked at it numerous times and tucked the leather back in, but that lasts less than an hour before it is exposed again.i am concerned the air bag may deploy without warning - or - not deploy properly during an accident.i even had an upholstery company look at it and they said they couldn't do anything without disconnecting the air bag, etc. And there would beno guarantee it would hold after repair.i declined that offer.research shows many, many complaints on this same problem.

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo. While driving 60 mph, the temperature and fuel gauges displayed incorrect readings. In addition, the low coolant warning light illuminated even though there was coolant in the vehicle. The air bag warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 163,000.updated 09/20/16*ljthe consumer stated if the vehicle sat for two days, the battery was drain and die. His mechanic stated it was due to an electrical problem. Also ,the rear defroster did not work, the fan switch did not work right away, and the turn signal light did not work unless he tapped the dashboard, and the transmission shifted hard. Updated 10/13/16.

I was driving home on hiway in crawford county wi it started snowing my back passenger tire hit a slick spot and my car spun out of control causing my car to turn around like i was going back to where i came from another car was coming up behind me didn't see me hit me smashed my whole back end the impact was so bad put my trunk in my back seat but the air bags never deployed my daughter and i were taken to hospital

My 2001 montecarlo was hit in front with front end damage and the air bags didn't go off causing my girl friend to have a broken nose ..the vehicle was in motion on a city street in the turning lane

While swerving to miss an animal i collided with a park car at around 30 mph.upon this collision my front bumper on the passenger side struck the left rear end of a vehicle.my car has an estimated $3600 of damage, and the damage to the other vehicle is unkown at this time but is quite extensive.neither the front or the passenger airbags were deployed resulting in me hitting the steering wheel at a force that caused extensive bleeding in my gums, and my front teeth being loose.

Consumer states that the side air bag cover is continueously coming off. Contacted dealer and the dealer cannot find a solution to the problem.ts

My wife and daughter were involved in an accident where she was forced off the road, crossed the median, and struck a tractor trailer unit, on is-70.the air bags did not deploy.gm was contacted and the "black box" was downloaded.the downloaded information is false.gm will no longer speak with me concerning this incident.your assistance would be appreciated.i am a missouri state trooper (gm is unaware of this) and am familiar with how airbags work.thank you,[xxx].parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Front driver's side seat airbag insulation came out from the seat. Driver drove vehicle to the dealership for analysis.

I own a 2001 chevy monte carlo which was involved in a front end collision.after getting estimates on repair work, i chose an authorized repair center to perform all necessary repairs.the repair shop informed me that in order for my vehicle to meet federal safety standards, new passenger and driver side airbags, as well as a new sensitivity diagnostic module would have to be installed.i was instructed that original parts would have to be used because aftermarket parts could not be used.the original g.m. Parts were ordered from parker banks chevrolet in potosi missouri.upon installation of these parts, the air bag deployment light could not be reset and showed that the module was bad even after being plugged into a vehicle diagnostic machine.parker banks technicians noticed that the part number for the module they ordered was different from the original part number.after contacting general motors, they were informed that the design had been changed and / or modified, and that the original parts would not work unless changes or alterations were made to other areas of the vehicle.these alterations would cause me to incur other expenses for work to be done to the vehicle which was not a result of damage caused in the collision.general motors is refusing to accept responsibility for this situation, even though they intentionally changed the function of mandated safety equipment for this vehicle.i do not believe that changes should have been made for the function of the required federal safety equipment for this vehicle unless a recall was issued, and i believe that general motors should accept responsibility for making these changes to my vehicle, and that the responsibility should not fall on me, the consumer.

Driver's side air bag falls out of seat, leather replaced, screw showing, leather buckled, still not corrected.

Driver side airbag comes out from seat showing plastic casing, had fixed twice but still pulls away.

I guess i'm the lucky one my car seems to have almost every complaint listed.the side air bag continuously tries to escape from it's seat.several months ago my blinkers started to work only as they felt like it, having read consumer complaints, i tried turning on the hazard lights when they wouldn't function, this would remedy the blinker problem for a short time.however, now my blinkers don't work at all and my hazards don't either.about the same time my car began shutting off at various speeds with no warning.then i went about 1 1/2 months with no stalling problems.this week my car has shut off daily making it very difficult to steer, stop and feel safe, especially with no hazards.the car will go to the chevy dealer today, we'll see what they say.i think that it's important to note that when the car shuts down you often don't have enough coasting time to get safely to the side of the road, especially on a 3 or more lane highway.

Flap that concealsside airbag ondriver's side is continually coming off.this concerns consumer, and is receiving no satisfaction fromdealership in resolving this issue.consumer states that the dealership tucks the leather material on the seat under the airbag, however after about an hour it is exposed again.

Driver side airbag assembly installed incorrectly.have a fear the bag will deploy upon entering car with my small children standing right in front of the opening to get in the back seat.also, have a great fear that the airbag maynot deploy when necessary.i bought a new car and general motors has told me they will not investigate this problem any further.the dealer has done a repair once but the frame around the airbag is still detaching itself and exposing the inside potion of the driver seat.i understandfrom the dealer that they have receiveda bullentin about this problem and are stilling selling 2002 models with the same problem and gmwill notfix the problem.i feel this is a real safety issue due to the fact it involves an airbag that may or maynot deploy at any time.

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start. The failure occurred after the vehicle was serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 14v400000 (electrical system). The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the body control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred and the instrument panel gauges illuminated. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the body control module needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired again and the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 86,137.updated 8/21/15 updated 10/18/2017

My 2001 chevrolet monte carlo has had a recurring problem where on occasion the vehicle will not start.the key is turned and nothing happens.in order to get the car to start the key must be held in the start position for approximately 30 seconds, then it runs normally.in the past gm told me it was the bcm and i have, to-date, spent over $700 "fixing" the problem without success.i recently began researching on the internet and foundthat this is a very common problem with 1999 - 2004 gm vehicles but gm has refused to acknowledge a fix via recall (whereas honda reportedly had a similar problem and did issue a recall).i urge the us government to force gm to acknowledge the problem (potentially with their passlock system) and fix our vehicles once and for all!please help!

The contact owns a 2001 monte carlo. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start unless the key was shaken in the ignition. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the technician diagnosed that the head gasket needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired but the failure recurred. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 110,597.updated 9/11/14the consumer stated the vehicle should be put on a recall list for faulty ignition. The vehicle should be added to all former recall list that exist or existed for the model. The consumer requested for the vehicle to be repaired and to be reimbursed for what has already been repaired. Updated 1/20/2015

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo. While driving at an unknown speed, smoke expelled from the front of the vehicle without warning. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer or diagnosed. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 15v701000 (engine and engine cooling); however, the part to do the recall repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount for time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

I have had consistent problems with the abs on this vehicle. I have had it diagnosed at chevrolet dealers and independent dealers in va.i have replaced all wheel hub/bearing assemblies.that is not the problem.the problem is with the abs wheel sensor wiring harnesses.it is obvious if you go online and research this issue there is no way that chevrolet is not aware and the many models of vehicles that are affected.i contacted chevrolet and they have no desire to attempt to help with repairing this safety issue that is well known by dealers, mechanics and consumers.there are currently no tsb's or recalls for this issue.thanks

I bought the car with no problem then all of a sudden it started with hard starting now it doesn't want to start at all. I brought it to a mechanic and they just pointed at stuff and then blamed the remote start and told me to change my ignition module it didn't fix the problem bought brand new plugs and wires and that didn't fix it then they told me to change the computer and that made no difference. They first told me to change the ignition switch and it cost me 180 dollarsthen i had to buy a blinker switch witch was also around 190 dollars this is money i don't have. And now im on foot because my car wont start and i need help i have no idea who knows how to work on cars were i live. I need somewhere that they know wiring or something, just help. I have no more money and i just need to have this stupid problem fixed. I also have a problem were the car will die out at a certain speed or when i let off the gas. I almost was hit by another car when this happened.

We have a 2001 chevy monte carlo that had issues with the anti theft, pass lock system. This kept the car from starting at times and sometimes would cause it to die while on the highway.. It started happening more frequently until it finally quit working all together. The bcm and the pass lock sensor had to be replaced. I have asked for the old parts. I have recently found out that there are numerous gm vehicles with the same issues and there has been no recalls. I consider this a potential safety hazard and gm needs to look into it a little further..

Turn signals will not work when windshield wipers are operating.*nlm

I purchased a used 2001 monte carlo ss 3.8l october 2011. The recall #2009047 engine compartment fire notice arrived in august 2012. Two spark plug retainers were installed at the dealer september 18, 2012 for no charge. On november 18, 2013, the car was parked for a few hours from 11 am until 2:45 pm, then after driving a short distance (less than 8 miles) on the highway, the car was parked in the lot of a pharmacy. Noticeable smoke began to emanate from under the sides of the hood. The hood remained cool to the touch. Immediately after the hood was lifted, the entire engine compartment was engulfed in fire. Two police officers just happened to be on the scene at the time. They kept us away from the vehicle and prevented us from any attempts to use an extinguisher on the fire. It burned until the firefighters arrived a few minutes later and put it out.the car still looked great with the hood closed. Except for a cracked windshield, there was no visible damage to the interior, exterior, or tires. Everything in the engine compartment was completely destroyed. The insurance company totaled it out.

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that the key was difficult to turn over to start the vehicle. The contact exited the vehicle and, upon further inspection under the hood, it was noticed that there was a fire near the engine compartment which burned various components. The parts that fractured ejected from the vehicle in flames. The driver did not sustain any injuries and a police report was not filed. The contact was able to get a fire extinguisher to extinguish the fire. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer for further inspection. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 09v116000 (engine and engine cooling). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 132,000.

Second submit - 1st submit no response104279316/2003 - fuel pump replaced. 9/2004 cool pressure test found inter gasket leaking - replaced upper & lower internal gaskets; low cool sensor replaced. 12/2004 - missing on incline and with cruise - nothing found. 11/2005 - missing on accel, using lots of gas - wanted to replace plugs, etc. 2/2006 - missing on incline and cruise - nothing found. 6/2008 - numerous issues - bcm replaced. 7/2008 - after bcm replaced, dash lights , cruise indicator, heat and a/c did not function properly - dealer stated there would be cost to fix items even though they worked prior to replacement of bcm. 9/29/2011 - learned about "special policy adjustment-catalytic converter #05551(9/14/2005)" although i was never advised by dealer and did not receive notification. Called dealer to ask if they would check under special policy - dealer said they could not because, although mileage is within special policy guidelines, the time expired 4/2011. I have copies of all service done on this vehicle. Can this special policy be honored since i was not notified of the policy by gm or the dealer? the car has always had a problem with missing and using lots of gasoline. Thank you for advocating for me.

The battery began failing (still had 1 1/2 years left on it). When everything in the car including security failed, by leaning on the passenger side seat i noticed the seat was "burning" hot. I received slight burns to both knees. Although black leather is hot in summer, the seat was extremely hot. Unplugging the seat began to cool the seat, but had apparently been on long enough to totally drain the battery. It was noted the battery was now sitting in acid which had spilled out of the battery caps. It is obvious the relay switch to the heated front passenger seat went on by itself without the hi/lo switch being on. The battery will now need to be replaced.

Upon attempting to start my car, the engine made a loud bang and saw some smoke coming out from the sides of the hood.i then noticed in the reflection of some water on the street and orange glow.i got out of the car, saw fire under the car, and called 911.

Cecking the fuses, none of them were blown. Gauge would be reading hot temperature, would check the hoses and radiator nothing. Fuel system is down now.

While driving my 01 monte carlo, i noticed that my security light came on, and my radio locked up. When i unplug the battery it will reset itself, but it is very inconvenient.

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo.when the contact started the vehicle, he noticed a warning message indicating service traction system and abs failure.the vehicle was taken to a local repair shop, but the cause of the failure could not be determined.the technician flashed the computer system to clear the code.the vehicle has not been repaired and the failure persists.the contact researched the failure and was able to determine that the wheel sensor on each wheel, ground, control system, or a faulty wiring harness could be causing the failure.the contact is in the process of taking the vehicle to the dealer and notifying the manufacturer.the failure mileage was 140,000 and current mileage was 153,000.

First i noticed that my dashboard would not light up at night from time to time when i drove at night . Sometimes it would not light up upon startup and then light up during the drive . This became more frequent over time . Also i experienced that my fog light on the driver's side kept blowing bulbs , about 3 so far , whereas the passenger side bulb is the original one since i brought the car . I spoke with a mechanic i befriended while taking a class and he told me that the problem was the headlamp control switch on the dash to the left of the steering wheel . I went to the dealer and they confirmed this to be true without my assessment i gained from my classmate mechanic who told me how common this problem was and how expensive it is to fix for the chevy monte carlo ss 2001 . Do you have similar complaints about this type of problem ? not being able to see your dashboard at night is very annoying as i like to know what my car is doing while driving it . I feel that this problem will grow and become more expensive to fix over time , especially being electrical .sincerely

Problem 1: driving near my home and vehicle quit on me.gas gauge showed full but come to find out, i was out of gas. Good thing i wasn't traveling at a high rate of speed, like interstate driving. Problem 2: vehicle wouldn't start, i'm being told it is the passlock system.security light has only come on 1 time.i never know when its going to start.very worried when i travel by myself.these have happened at different times.

When driving, headlights and dashboard lights (speedometer, etc) will go out, warning lights will light up.at other times, after turning off ignition, the headlights and/or dome lights will stay on.vehicle will not start, unless battery cable is removed and reconnected.dealership was of no help, said i would be charged to determine the cause of the problem, as it is no longer under warranty.this is a safety issue, because the headlights will go out, while driving, causing visibility to be nil.

2001 chevy monte carlo blinkers doesn't work an when i press the hazardous lights thy start working but recently neither of them work.

Stop & go driving. Abs warning light comes on, traction control turns off, service traction control warning light comes on, brake pedal vibrates.all lights stay on while driving but resetafter ignition turn off/ turn on procedure as described in owners manual.next day, same lights & warnings.take vehicle to dealer on 4/05/06. "computer checked system codes p1189, p0135, c1216 in system.items tested per trouble tree.all items test good."no charge.next day, 4/6/06, same warnings!take to dealer again without resetting warnings.no computer system codes showing, but no input signal from right front hub. Dealer replaces right front hub assembly - cost $479.vehicle seems fine, until about 4/20 when brake pedal vibration comes back and warning lights come on and off.i turned off the traction control system and everything was fine for several days.on 4/25, with the traction system off, the pedal vibration was back and the abs & traction control warning lights came on again.went back to dealer.although they told me the computer check show codes of c1222 and c1226, the codes do not show on my invoice.code c1226 appears on nhtsa technical service bulletin item number 10017271 for my year and make of vehicle.however the service bulletin number 3500 is not know to the dealer as a valid tsb number, and they could not locate any information about it.dealer "diagnosed and replaced ebtcm, and programmed system"- cost $697.i feel that by replacing the "brain" (ebtcm) and programming it, the dealer and/or the manufacturer may be covering up a potential safety issue with either one or both systems, abs and traction control.i also feel that the dealer put me and my family in a dangerous position by failing to diagnosis any problems on the first visit, and then doing it again by making me feel safe by paying for a replacement part that has nothing to do with either system!

I'm posting my complaint about a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo. There are multiple problems but the two worse are that the turn signals don't work and the car's engine is being disabled by some sort of security malfunction. I'm 19, and don't have money to have this problem corrected. Nobody seems to know what's causing the problems. It's very frustrating because the car leaves me stranded, and not having turn signals that work properly is also very frustrating, because it can cause a very bad accident. Please someone help!

Turn signals only work some of the time and make a loud buzzing noise sometimes you can make them work by pushing the four way flashers but it is only a temporary fix..i believe this is a serious safety issue and there should be a recall for this problem.there is also a clunking noise coming form the steering column/front end.

Intermittent failure of the chevrolet passlock system.the engine starts, but dies in one or two seconds and the "security" light begins flashing - or the engine may not start at all.if i wait 10 to 30 mintues after the first attempt, i can usually get the car restarted but if you do a search online for gm passlock, you'll find numerous websites reporting this issue and suggesting that it may eventually get so bad that the car will not start again.the general motors passlock system is supposed to protect yoru car from theft by preventing the fuel system from engaging, however; this malfunction is happening to owners all across the united states of america.

I went out to start my car and the key won't turn the ignition switch. I have three keys to my car and none of them will turn ignition.

I was driving on the 105 freeway and the car cut off on me in the fast lane. I pulled the car to the side and tried to start it back up. It wouldn't start at first but after a couple more of times of trying, it started up and i went on home. This car was my moms friend's car and he couldn't drive it anymore do to health problems, so he gave it to me. This shutdown happen to me 3 more times where the car just shutdown while im driving, and then it stated to shutdown while i was at a red light, but it didn't. I asked my moms friend about the car and he told me that he had bought the faulty ignition switch 2 times before, and he still have the papers from the shop where he paid them to fix it. My moms friend told me about the recall so i went to the gm in long beach ca. They gave me a card to call, harbor auto, [xxx]., (562)426-3341. I called and told her about what was happening to the car and it's on recall for the faulty ignition switch . She told me that the year 2001 is not on recall so she can't help me. I looked at the news report on nbclosgneles.com for gm recalls and this is the same thing that's wrong with my car, the faulty ignition switch. I don't know what to do about this ignition switch because he tried to fix it 2 times already. I have to drive this car to work and back home. Now that i know what's wrong with the car, i just shake the key in the ignition and it will start back up. I don't drive on the freeways unless i have too. And when i do, i drive in the slow lane just in case it wants to shutdown on me. Please help me get the right part for my car, thank you. Takata recall. I spoke to a representative at gm asking about the recall of my vehicle and said my warranty was expired. I just recently bought the car from another person so how i was suppose to know about the cars recall.the problem with the car is the ignition switch whenever i rotate it to turn it on it does not start. I would have to rotate it slowly to the start and as well let it go slowly for it to start. So its not functioning properly. I want to file a complaint to gm for i can get my car fix since it could be caused of my death and the death of other civilians that are near my car whenever it gives up or even worst.

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that after servicing the vehicle under nhtsa campaign number: 14v400000 (electrical system), the insert in the key slot and the cover over the key head on the ignition switch detached. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the recall was performed on a second occasion but the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

Security will not allow car to start or run dealer says bad bcm or wire wants 400 to look.

My 2001 monte carlo ss has recently had problems with its security warning light system.the warning light comes on for no apparent reason while driving the car.at the same time the headlights and dashboard lights flash very quickly.one time the car would not start and the car was dead.after opening the trunk with my remote to get the battery jumper cables power returned to the car and i was able to start the car.

I have had numerous problems with my 01' chevrolet monte carlo ss. The car will idle between 1200 and 3300 rpms intermittently while driving and in park. This problem makes this vehicle very hard to control, slow down and stop. My fuel mileage has been affected, i have had to replace my brakes, and my confidence in this vehicle is gone. My wife and i feel very uncomfortable driving this car because we never know when it is going to act up, and when it does, the safety of us and all those around us is in jepordy. I have towed this vehicle to the dealer over 8 times, for this problem. I have had numberous this replace, but the problem keeps coming back. I have attempted a gm buy back and also a lemon law and gm refused to do anything about it. I no longer want to waste my time and money on a car that may soon harm someone or myself!!!

Turn signal failure.

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo. While driving approximately 35 mph, the vehicle stalled and an abnormal noise emitted. The vehicle restarted and resumed normal operation. The failure occurred only after the vehicle was serviced under nhtsa campaign number: 14v400000 (electrical system). The failure caused the battery to drain. The battery was replaced on three separate occasions. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 340,000.

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo super sport.while driving 20 mph, the vehicle shut off without warning.the vehicle was unable to be restarted and was towed to the contact's residence.the dealer stated that the engine and ecm caused the failure.the contact would have to pay over $500 to have the vehicle repaired.the failure has been occurring for approximately four months; however, this was the first time the vehicle ever shut off.the failure and current mileages were 88,000.

Since purchase of car with 34,000 miles in march of 2002, there have been several problems. Check engine light came on around 50,000 miles, had it checked was given the code for temperature sensor. Had sensor changed, within six months light came on again. When checked was given same code for temperature sensor so i had it replaced a second time. Now periodically while driving the temperature gauge will drop completely and when turning off the ignition the fan will continue to run. The only way to stop the fan is to either unplug the fan or unhook the battery. Randomly when trying to start the car it will not start as if the battery is dead, but the radio and all lights still work. Had this checked but no problems could be found. After waiting for about ten minutes the car will start. The only explanation i was given was that maybe the computer system thinks i am attempting to steal my own car. Then there are the turnsignals, when you turn on the signal it will work for a few seconds then stop. The only way i have found to make them work again is to turn on the hazard flashers for a few seconds then turn on the signal again. There have been so many problems with this vehicle and with no warranty left it is rather costly and frustrating.

2001 monte carlo ss; i've had many different occasions on where the car just dies while i'm driving it. They had a recall for the "ignition key" i took it in, they "fixed" the key-not the ignition, and still, to this day, the vehicle continues to die while driving, which includes loss of power steering completely. Luckily, i have not had a car accident due to this issue, but it's still scary when it happens. It happened again today, 5/29/2015 while driving and completely lost steering control when it died.

Series of high cost repairs at my expense with no warranty: driver infomation center has always been wrong and inaccurate and unfixable; at 24446 miles, replaced front rotors at my expense (; ac at 30825 worked intermittenly and battery light indicator stayed on and serpentine belt worn out (replaced with after market brand ($90) that has lasted perfectly at almost 80,000 miles; engine coolant leak notice by chevrolet on july 2003 fixed on 7/30-03 at 58009miles; at 34607 vibration from intermid. Steering shaft and bushing replaced ($60); vibration back at 75,000miles and they would not fix it; chev diagnosis on 7/8/04 for left rear wheel speed sensor needs left rear wheel hub assembly (abs brakes will not work and not fixed, $700) and turn signals work intermittenly (not fixed) and ac compressor leaking (not fixed, $900), and driver seat power seat heater defective (not fixed, $230).

Well i go out to start my car and nothing after 30min it start, and ever time i stop i had to keep it running or the car would not start,i paid a dealer $600.00 to fix.two days later it happen again, this is caused by the bcm,t he body control module, only a dealer can fix this now i cant even drive the car until i come up with $600.00 again plus $65 for programming.

Consumer called complaining aboutelectrical systemproblems. Stated that consumer was in the vehicle andthat the door will not unlock/ windows will not come down. Manufacturer was contacted, and stated that they have no other complains on this vehicle.

Security light, service vehicle soon light, battery light and airbag light all flash. The radio will "lock" and will not play. The car seems to run fine but the lights flash constantly. I was told there was no recall on this model, but yet it sounds just like the other recalls on monte carlos. My dealership wants $80.00 just to look at it. There is a real problem with the diagnostic system and i am afraid my air back won't work if needed.

The dealer years ago just put an insert into the key.now the ignition does not properly work. You have to wiggle the key for operation. Sometimes the car won't start, other times the components won't work unless i wiggle the key. Car has 57,000 miles.was part of the original recall for ignition problems.

I was stopped at a red light at the intersection of 31st street and la grange highway when i noticed smoke coming from under the hood of my car. I pulled into the cit-go gas station thinking my monte carlo was over heating. Then, flames began to come from the under the hood. I immediately called 911 and the la grange park police and fire department came within minutes. They had to saw my hood open to put the fire out and i immediately contacted gm. Starter hang-up: i purchased a 2001 monte carlo ls in may 2001 and sometime during the first week of having this vehicle i noticed that there was some type of starter hang-up, whenever i try to start the car, the starter return spring is not making the clutch assembly return, it hangs up and cause the car to make a noise as if you have started your car with the engine running. The number of times this has happen is to many to count.

Turn signals sometimes do not work.hazard lights do not stay on .constantly shut right off. Driving at times can be dangerous when you put on the turn signal and it doesn't work.

Traffic signals constantly fail to work, used to be able to push hazard light button and they would come back on, now hazard lights won't work either. Have almost had 4 accidentsbecause blinkers failed to work, have almost been cited by the local police until i proved it was a mechanical failure. Can't afford the cost of repair, because i had to pay out of my pocket for catalytic converter replacement when it failed, though it was a manufacturer defect, because gmc and dealer wouldn't make it good, and the engine shut down completely.

The turn signals work when they want to, the oil pressure gauge works when it wants to, the sun roof opens if it wants to. It has been to the dealer on this and they say they can't duplicate the failure. These systems don't work more than do work. This has been happening since the car was purchased in 2001. If you can't help i guess i will have to pay now to have it fixed when it should have been fixed under warranty.

I went to a dealership to deal with a key ignition recall 2 months ago. Now my car is stalling in the middle of the road which never happened before the recall..

I've had this automobile for several years now and without knowing the intake gaskets leak in the 3.8 engines. I was unaware of this severe condition. I should of been told of this issue when i purchase the car from the dealer since this is an ongoing problem with many of the chevy monte carlos 3.8 and i believe the 3.4 also. It will cost me about $480 to repair which i do not have and should not be responsible for this chevrolet ongoing issue. I had very scary moment one time it started running hot and smoke was coming off the engine as the fluid was seeping out of the gasket and dripping down the side of the engine which caused a small flame. This such a dangerous problem and i should not be liable for this dangerous defect in the engine.

In late 2015, and again in january 2016, we received notice from gm that the following recall applied to our vehicle:nhtsa recall number: 15v701, manufacturer recall number:n150757this is a recall to remedy leaking valve cover gaskets.we contacted the local chevrolet dealer from whom we purchased the vehicle and were informed that "parts are on national backorder."we have contacted the dealer repeatedly since then, and have been told each time that the parts are on backorder, and that we would be contacted when they were in stock. The last such call was 7/29/2016.it is now september. This might be understandable if the recall involved precision parts such as airbags, or complex assemblies such as a transmission. That is not the case. It's a valve cover (plastic molded) and gasket for the most popular engine gm ever made - possibly the most popular engine in history. We suspect that either the dealer or the manufacturer is reluctant to invest their service department time in this low-value, low-profile recall.

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo. While the vehicle was parked in the garage, the contact observed smoke and fire coming under the hood. The local fire department extinguished the fire. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 145,000.

I got into the vehicle to go to church sunday with my mother-in-law. I turned the key in the ignition and there was an explosion from under the hood that made the hood jump and some smoke came out of the sides. It scared my mother-in-law half to death. Our company mechanic checked the engine and determined the intake had exploded. He checked on-line as to a probable cause and discovered there was a recall on various pontiac, buick and chevy vehicles with 3.8l engines due to intake explosions due to faulty fuel pressure regulators. In some cases it seems to have bent a fuel rail and pulled an injector out of the head, which it looks to have done to mine also. He towed the vehicle to the dealership and they told him there were 3 recalls listed for this car and that was not one of them. One of the listed recalls was for the ignition which we took it in for and it still sticks. Our mechanic checked your web-site and did find recalls for this explosion problem. Some of the statements people posted about this happening resulted in fires as well as the explosion so this seems to be a significant hazard. Why is our car not listed with the dealer for this recall ? though it is titled as a 2001 it was manufactured in 09/00 so seems it should be included in the recall, especially since it did the exact same thing as the others. They want over $700 to fix the intake, regulator and gasket and i should not be liable for what is apparently a manufacturers defect, and that's if it didn't cause more damage when it exploded.

They notified me that my vehicle is in fact a recall and was negligent in sending me the registered vehicle owner any sort of notice of recall. Gm is denying fault and refuses to repair the vehicle or grant any sort of responsibility or compensation. Although they are responsible for the manufacturer defect they still refuse liability.

My 2001 monte carlo ss. I went to start it and it had a load explosion, it bent sparkplug, blew off oil cap started a fire, whole upper intake destroyed.

Windsheld wipers park straight up vertical.heater resistor failed. Check engine light always on. Steering wheel rattles when cornering slowly.light always on saying antifreeze low despite it not being low. Too much bass in radio rough shifts. Brake pads done at 70,000km seems to be falling apart as soon as warranty was up.

My 2001 monte carlo ss developed a leak between the upper plastic intake manifold and lower aluminium intake manifold. I stopped at a dealer and asked them about it and they said they knew of no problem but when i asked them how much to repair they replied about $800 without looking at the car. I contacted gm customer service and they told me to take the car to a dealer for an estimate, which i did. They then talked with the dealer and came to the conclusion that there was nothing they could do for me. In the meantime i did some research and found that this is a common problem with a technical service bulletin out on it. Gm customer service and the dealer said that since this is not a safety issue nothing could be done because the car is out of warranty and that i should have purchased the extended warranty. So i was stuck paying a garage $880 to replace both manifolds as directed in the tsb and the worry that my year and a half old car my launch its motor at anytime due to the contamination of the oil with antifreeze from the leak.

2001 monte carlo 75,000 miles 3.8l v6 plastic intake manifold broke had to be replaced at a cost of $700.00. This happened before i ever had to have a tune-up on my monte carlo. What's wrong with this picture?

The car would lose power at higher rpm's every now and again before problem becamean everyday problem.then one day a loud bang and car ran horrible.drove it until it wouldn't hardly stay running.couldn't figure out the problem.car gave code for faulty egr valve.replaced, didn't change anything.the converter had to be replaced, ran better but still not correct.the muffler shop said i had a warped plastic intake, needed to replace.i bought the part and replaced.still didn't fix the problem completely.then i was told the intake gasket was faulty.replaced those, and runs much better.still not correct, don't know if it is a result from all that was wrong.my complaint is for the converter, plastic intake, and the intake manifold gaskets.the intake gaskets were destroyed from the dexcool anti-freeze installed from factory.i hear many complaints about the plastic intakes and i believe that one of these caused the converter to fail.i have the intake, and the intake gaskets that i replaced.will keep parts until i get more info on this.also have all cost info.did much of the repair on my own.

Smell of anti freeze, service light on,temp gauge showing no temp and fans running in cold weather.

For the past year i have been having problems with engine coolant loss from my car, when i first noticed it i brought it to the dealer's attention and was informed that what i was seeing was a "gasket sealer" and i was normal with a new car; however, 4 months later i am losing coolant from the intake manifold loosing up, after the first repair, where the bolts where simply tightened up it was ok , now it is leaking all around the intake gasket on to the electrical system and transmission.i took the car to the dealer, and was told there was a recall on the monte carlos for this problem but my engine is not affected i have a 3.4 liter and the recall was on 3.1 and 3.8 engines.i have been going back and forth with the dealer and chevy usa on this for several months now with no resolution, my car was under warranty when i first noticed this and was told it was "nothing to worry about" now it is not under warranty and the problem is worse i am hoping in writing you this it can be investigated as to why i have the same problem with my car as the other engine sizes but my motor is not part of the repair recall, it is obvious to me that this is a design defect on my motor.the intake should not just come loose from the engine after 20,000 and 40,000 miles should it? the vehicle is a 2001 chevy monte carlo ls with the 3.4 liter v6 auto transmission. *la

Transmission oil leak, grinding noise in the transmission, coolant leak at the lower intake manifold.

I own a 01 monte carlo and 40,000 miles i started getting an anti-freeze leak. My dealership informed me it was a leak in the intake manifold.they also told me they see 2-3 monte carlo's a month in with this problem and 5-6 malibu's and lumina's with the same problem.they want $600 to fix since it is past the warrenty.if chevy knows of the problem they should fix it.i did some research and the intake manifold i need is on a 2 month back order due to so many problems.i have only had the car 1 1/2 years.

Head gasket went bad with 28,000 mi.

Gm recall no. 90047-why does the remedy not address the reason behind the oil leak.under so-called hard braking, as reported in the recall notice, where is the oil supposedly leaking from.rather than treating the symptom, the source of the oil leak should have been addressed.it is against environmental pollution efforts to allow for such a defect to continue.i'm sure it would have been more costly to gm to fix the cause of the leak, but given the large number of vehicles with this engine all leaking, the proposed spark plug channel swap just doesn't make sense.i am requesting a re-assessment of the proposed solution and suggest epa also be consulted considering the environmental impact this has.i would welcome a response.

On two occasions, while driving between 40-50 miles per hour, the engine stalled -once in a construction zone area.luckily, we were able to turn off onto a side street, but just barely since the power steering was out. The car has a hard time starting.it requires stepping on the gas pedal - just like the old days.

This complaint is in reference to gm safety recall # 09047.precautions to the consumer include not parking car in garage and noticing a burning odor.a call was made to local dealer and parts are on national backorder!!so, if i park my car in the garage and it burns the house down, i have no recourse because i received a letter.this is not satisfactory!!

The 2001 chevrolet monte carlo i purchased in february, 2001 has had serious and numerous defects since i purchased the car two years ago. The transmission, engine, caliphers, and breaks have each been repaired by the dealer at least twice. On feb.15, 2003, the key got stuck in the ignition of the car, and because the car was then out of warranty, i was forced to pay $406.00 for a repair of the vehicle. On february 20th, 2003, the car started leaking oil and the transmission "jumps" from the parking gear into drive whenever it is turned on. I am asking thatthe gm manufacturer. The compalints on this vehicle are ongoing. The date indicated below is only the date of the latest incident with this car.to repurchase the vehicle for the monthly payments and interest i have already paid

I purchased this car in 09/01 it has been a problem ever since. Front end needed to be rebuilt at 1200 miles and then again at 2000 miles. Air conditioner has been a constant problem (i was told i needed to park some place else) the manifold gaskets had to be replaced at 48000 miles and now the wiper switch has gone bad. The front end feels real bad, but they claim there is nothing wrong. Just waiting for the front end to fall out from underneath the car on a hot, rainy, july morning. I'm going back to ford. Oh yeah forgot, paint went bad 1 yearafter i bought it. Gm says i drove through something.

Turn signal failure.

Turn signals only work some of the time and make a loud buzzing noise sometimes you can make them work by pushing the four way flashers but it is only a temporary fix..i believe this is a serious safety issue and there should be a recall for this problem.there is also a clunking noise coming form the steering column/front end.

Turn signals operate erratically or not at all mostly during warmer weather. Pressing the hazard light button on for about 3 seconds usually makes them start working again but creates a distracted driving condition when trying to let your intentions known to other drivers. Symptoms are no blinking, slow and changing blink speed, and excessively fast blinking.

Turn signals fail to work on my 2001 chevy monte carlo.i find myself in many situations of putting myself at risk since they do not work.

Turn signals sometimes do not work.hazard lights do not stay on .constantly shut right off. Driving at times can be dangerous when you put on the turn signal and it doesn't work.

Hazard switch inoperative.

Turn signals intermittently inoperative.notice hazard switch intermittently inoperative.if you play with hazard switch and get hazard lights to function then turn signals will function.will replace hazard switch as i believe it to be malfunctioning (an intermittent open circuit in switch).

I have intermittently working turn signals. I have contacted my local dealer on numerous occasions. There is a recall on the hazard switch that affects the same year of manufacture products that have the same problem as me, intermittent turn signal loss. I have followed the advice of the dealership, that, when this occurs, lightly press the hazard switch, and then if the turn signal starts functioning, that means i have the same defective switch as the other affected make of chevy cars that are under recall. Well, lightly pressing the hazard switch does makes my turn signals function normally. According to a gm plant employee, my car has the same electrical components that the other cars under recall affected models have. Why is my car not considered "under recall"? the dealership will charge me to have it repaired, until this is a recall issue.

On several occasions i have lost the use of my turn signals. It is very intermittent.a few times they have come back on, but most times not.i tried to compress the prongs holding the fuse, but the signals again failed a week or so later. They're working now, but i never know when they won't. In heavy traffic, this could be a serious problem.

Turn signals only work some of the time and i feel this is a safety issue. At first they work but after a brief time of driving they stop working.

Turn signals keep going out.

I have a 2001 monte carlo ss that i purchased about 4 years ago today. My complaint is about the turn signals not operating all the time. They will shut off while you make a turn while trafficis behind you, hopefully i will not get rear-ended some day. This has been happening for several years now and the people whom i spoke with also have own a monte carlo ss complain about this to. So i am not the only one that's having this problem. This is a very dangerous mechanical defect and needs special attention asap before some one gets injured or killed. What concerns me is that there has never been a recall on this automobile and addition there has been many complaints that i am aware of. Need assistance with this dangerous defect asap.

Turn signals fail intermittently. Pressing hazard warning switch off/on while/after placing turn signal in either (right/left turn) positions will eventually get the turn signals operating.

On my 2001 monte carlo i have intermittent turn signal lights. They work when they want to.had the issue a few a handful of time under warranty dealer never could make it fail now it happens daily. I have read hundreds of similar complaints on auto websites about all models of chevy with these problems and all chevy wants to do is replace the signal switch for $400 plus dollars per car. Based on what i have read it seems that a serious investigation into this for a possible recall is warranted.

Engine backfired and exploded upon ignition after sitting for a week. Engine was cold and in cold weather. 3 foot flames, minor burns and injuries sustained er visit for smoke inhalation while extinguishing fire. Vehicle was parked on private property. A neighbor's car the same make and model similar year did the same thing a few weeks ago.

After charging the battery l then started the car an had a back fire. When the car back fired it blew out the intake manifold an there was a lot of smoke . Was wondering if ther was a recall on the fuel pump pressure regulater . Which could be the cause of it .

I was driving at highway speeds and the temp gauge droppef to zero, air conditioning stopped working, and car began to struggle. I pulled the car off the highway to see if was dumping coolant put. Took the vehicle to the shop and he new what was wrong because a lot of these cars come in with the problem. I had to have the timing cover replaced and the ect sensor. The mechanic said this happens often as gm cars have these issues. Was also told it looked as if the car overheated and was lucky it didn't blow up on the highway and cause an accident.

Cecking the fuses, none of them were blown. Gauge would be reading hot temperature, would check the hoses and radiator nothing. Fuel system is down now.

Problem 1: driving near my home and vehicle quit on me.gas gauge showed full but come to find out, i was out of gas. Good thing i wasn't traveling at a high rate of speed, like interstate driving. I purchased a 2001 chevy monte carlo ss in 9-01. I did not realize until recently the engine was built 2000. I would not have purchased. My car has had multiple problems. The recent occurred july 20th 2019. My odometer is 117,166 original miles. The intake manifolds and upper intake manifold is all made of a plastic. I went to start my car which has been running fine. Around 6-7:00 pm i heard a loud boom. It startled me and my nieghbors even came out. I noticed smoke coming from the front drivers side. I popped the hood and flames were shooting straight up the firewall onto the inside hood. I immediately screamed get me water and noticed the fire extinguisher. I smashed the glass grabbed it and began to put out the fire. Remind you the car has a cover i was using both hands removed the oil cap pulled the cover and still spraying i put the cover out and continued with the engine placing the oil cap to prevent cross contamination. I was able to put out the fire i had cuts to my hand and it singed the hair on my arms and my wrist had a slight burn. However, i have know idea how i was over looked on the 5-17-04 fuel pressure regulator recall part #03064b my car is a 3.8 litre k series. If i would have had my granddaughter she is in a car seat the damage would have been much worse. The flames were so high they almost reached the tree branch. The scary part is gmac is aware of the possible fire and is trying to settle with me for minimal amount. I just spent thousands because the car hit 100,000 so new radiator, tune up etc. This was a very expensive purchase and to think i have been driving a time bomb. Luckily i wasn't in traffic or in a place where i had to pull my granddaughter out and the car seat because the entire car would have burned. I honestly thought it was going to blow up. I can actually shove my fist in that upper intake manifold. See complaint odi112351110

The only reason i am submitting this is that i know of 3 other monte carlos in this area with the same problem.gm does not want to re-issue a full warrenty on the repaired part.we stood our ground with them and got a 50,000 mile warrenty in writing from the dealership, but only after telling them i would contact the attorney generals office...which i did anyway.seems this is a problem they are aware of and are trying to keep it quiet.people should know that they need to argue with the dealer for a good warrenty.

Transmission oil leak, grinding noise in the transmission, coolant leak at the lower intake manifold.

While driving the air bag light had come on intermittently and the air bag compartment appears warped due to the leather being separated from the compartment.the dealer replaced the side seat air bag retainer.the driver side seat belt had locked up, and the trim panel on the dash had fallen.*scc

Passenger seat belt comes unbuckled for no reason. It also wont lock all the way when you plug it in. Release button some times stays in when you push it to take the seat belt off. Scared to ride in passenger seat because the seat belt does not work properly. No restraint nothing. Riding 45-50 mph in passengerseat belt just unplugged all by it selfwould not plug back in because the button stays down. I had to hit it with a flsh light to get it to release.

The driver side seat belt could not be pulled out to be buckle .

Driver's restraint does not retract back intoretractor.dealer has repaired restraint seven times, but problem has reoccurred. Please provide additional information.

The drivers seat belt failed to retract, allowing the latch plate to turn, the narrow side towards the seat back and in turn the wide side to the door, in the area of the cover of the air bag cover, when the door closed, a hole was made in the door panel and also the side of the seat back at the air bag cover.*yd

Both driver's and passenger'sshoulder belts are not outboard enough, and hits consumer right under the neck, consumer feels this is unsafe becausebelt resting on the neck.

The material on the driver's seat keeps pulling away from the side air bag leaving an unsightly hole in the seat back. The problem started as soon as i purchsed the car 11 months ago. I have taken the car in to the dealership for repair at least three times and have not had any satisfaction. The last two times i have been told that gm is preparing a technical bulletin with a fix but nothing so far. I have complained to chevrolet and they checked with the dealer and were told they were trying. I was promised a free lof for my trouble. My main comcern is that i purchased a new car and have yet to have more than two days without the defect and unsightly seatback. I have owned gm products all of my life and i am seriously disappointed with the actions and efforts of the dealer and of the level of concern of chevrolet.

While driving the air bag light had come on intermittently and the air bag compartment appears warped due to the leather being separated from the compartment.the dealer replaced the side seat air bag retainer.the driver side seat belt had locked up, and the trim panel on the dash had fallen.*scc

Drivers seat separates from where the side air bag is stored. Has been returned to the dealer several times but they have not been able to repair. They say that there could be a recall but chevrolet does not seem to know anything about this. I have contaced chevrolet several times with no satisfactory results, the last time i called customer service i was told that this problem was not consided the manufacturer's problem.

Have had to have my rotors turned and then replaced in under 40,000 miles. Now at 56,000- i am experiencing the same symptoms. Dealer paid for turning the first time. When the rotors needed to be replaced- warranty had expired. I went directly to chevy who refused (they were also extremely rude and unprofessional, did not respond to messages and refused to let me speak to a manager!) to replace.

I have a 2001 chevy monte carlo ss.i recently started getting a service traction control light coming on.also, my abs would engage at an inappropriate time.i would be easing to a stop and the abs would kick in for no reason.i took it to the dealership and after paying about 1,000.00 to have the speed sensors replaced'.i have the same problem.after doing some internet searches i have found 'thousands' of similar complaints.apparently it is a problem with the wiring harness that is incidentally a much less expensive fix.there are consumer reports of their abs engaging at high speeds for no reason.i see this as very dangerous.

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo. The contact stated that while driving 15 mph, all of the lights illuminated on the instrumental panel. The brake pedal was applied and the pedal depressed to the floor. The contact was able to stop the vehicle. The contact also stated that the accelerator pedal was applied and the traction control activated, causing the anti lock brakes to seize the wheels. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but offered no assistance. The failure was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage was 170,000.

The vehicle experienced the following:stalled when cold and uponhard acceleration, the key stuck in the ignition, suspension and brake problems(rod kit was installed/no brakes), the transmission had gone out(repaired), the vehicle hesitated and jumped from park gear to drive, and after the ignition repairs, the vehicle stalled and hesitated in shifting to gear.the consumer requested the dealer to repurchase the vehicle, and reimburse for the repair(s), and the rental.mrscc

The consumer felt the overall design including the engine, transmission, and the brakes were seriously flawed.the vehicle was properly repaired by the dealer.on two occasions, the ignition had gotten stuck, the engine lost oil, and the dipstick cylinder had loosened.the consumer requested a refund.gm did not agree with the above comment, and stated the dealer handled the situation properly.(model ss)mrscc

Engine check light comes on but no codes show up, car engine quits after puting in gear(reverse).steering and brakes quit and emergency brake used to stop.

No summary listed for avbove vehicle.

Violet shaking when applying brake caused by warping of brake discs. I've had to have resurfaced 3 times since ownership & it's going back in for the 4th time. Dealership says nothing chevrolet can do about it! most of my driving is highway.

I drive a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo. I have had to have my rotors replaced twice and a complete brake job done all before my factory warranty is up. I have been told this is not a safety issue and that rotors are a wearable item. I am concerned that this will be a continual problem with repeat trips to the dealership to replace what appears to be a defective part and it's continual use as a replacement part. 90% of my driving is interstate driving and the fear of braking irregularities or effectiveness is frightening to me. Something needs to be done to prevent this problem--not just cover it up.

I took my monte carlo in at 25,000 miles for bad steering wheel vibrations when braking and brakes not holding in damp weather (either rain or car wash).the service consultant told me that whoever rotated my tires used the wrong torque when putting the wheels back on. He said that messed up my rotors.i told him that i had never rotated my tires.he said that my warranty wouldn't be honored because i had not rotated my tires.i took it to another chev dealer and he said that brakes were not covered under warranty and it was not unusual to have to have my rotors turned and new pads at that mileage.i have had all new cars and never had to have a complete brake job at that mileage.

Brake rotors were turned by dealer in june 2004 at 43,000 miles.steering wheel started shaking, had brakes checked, brakes were fine. Was told the front rotors were no good and needed to be replaced.this occured 3 months and 4,000 miles later.the dealer replaced the rotors, charged $205.00(did not charge labor). I've noticed on this site many people have complained of the same problem.i've spent over $450.00 in 90 days for brake rotor issues.

The problem is the the rotors have had to be resurfaced at 11,000, 22,000 miles and now at 30,000 i have to replace rotors out of my pocket. They get hot and do not cool down before next time you sep on brake. Cheve. Did pay for the resurfacing on the first 2 tims, but will not fix them anymore time. Les schwab is doing the repacement work now and they have said that this is not the first one they have done, for the same problem. Cheve. Dealer did tell me that there is a recall on the malibu rotors but not the monte carlo. When the rotors start going you get a plusing in the steering wheel and the brake pedal, when they get really bad your steering wheel shakes. This is a safety problem with the rotors, why is chevrolet not coming froward to fix this problem right?

My 2001 chevrolet monte carlo has a safety-related defect with the front brake rotors.the rotors are made of a composite material and warp very easily.at 1500 miles, i noticed a steering wheel vibration when applying the brakes at 45-60 mph.i had the rotors removed and resurfaced at my local garage since the chevy dealer told me that brake repairs would not be covered under the warranty.i now have 25000 miles on the vehicle, and the braking vibration is recurring.my mechanic tells me that the rotors must be replaced. This is clearly a safety-related, design defect that chevrolet is refusing to fix.nhtsa should investigate this and force chevrolet to fix the problem.

Every 15,000 to 17,000 i have to have the rotors turned because of warping. I have contacted the manufacters customer service and they sent back a standard form letter. After second time manufacturer told me they could not help and to make an appointment with my dealer. All they did was to turn the rotors no charge. That does not solve the problem. There has to be a defect. Just like one of the other complaints, all my driving is on the highway.

The brake rotors on my 2001 monte carlo have had to be resurfaced twice and now need to be resurfaced a third time for becoming warped.the first time i had the brakes resurfaced was at 19,874 miles.the second time was at 40,644.i have 55,562 miles on my vehicle now and they need to be resurfaced again, but the vibrations haven't gotten that bad yet.associated with the vibrations from my rotors becoming warped, i experience a "knocking" feeling in the steering wheel.i took my car into my local chevy dealer at about 39,700 miles and described my problem to them.they told me that the brake rotors were warped and needed resurfacing and that the steering shaft had gone bad and needed replacing.i had them replace the steering shaft ($480 job) but not the brakes.i took my car to a local repair shop to resurface the rotors (less expensive than dealer cost).i am having the same symptoms of the steering shaft going bad again.i don't understand why chevrolet won't do something for its monte carlo customers.

Vehicle is subject to vibration due to rotors having some sort of failure, possibly warped.owner is concerned because no cause was specified.since consumer purchased the vehicle while applying brakes between 45 and 60 miles per hour the steering wheel violently vibrates.the vehicle is still covered under warranty.consumer took vehicle to the repair shop where she was informed the rotors were warped and wouldn't be covered.consumer took vehicle to a different mechanic for a second opinion.*jg

2001 monte carlo ss failure of steering knuckle passenger side. Replaced outer tie rod two times on second replacement noticed tie rod was loose in knuckle after looking closer i saw large crack in tierodhole that if separated completely the steering would have failed. Had to replace steering knuckle and tierod again. Was told that this happens very frequently with all models of gm cars with this same setup. Mileage at failure was around 110,000 miles.

I have had my 2001 monte carlo ls since september of 2001 i am the original owner. I started having problems with the intermediate steering shaft at about 20,000 mile at which time the dealer lubed it and the problem went away for awhile. The lube only lasted till about 48,000 miles at which time i had to take it back to the dealer and they did it again under what they call good will. At around 63,000 miles it was happening again at which time i decide to call general motors. I explained my problem to them even giving them their own bulletin number that called for replacement of the steering shaft that was provided to me by a gm technician. They could not find that in their database until i gave them the number then they told me there was a bulletin the superseded the bulletin i gave them which called for lubing the shaft. They had me take the car to the dealer for diagnosis which they told me the steering shaft needed to be lubed which is what i told gm on the phone. Gm told me they where not going to cover the cost of the repair even know the same part failed 3 times in under 70,000 miles. The dealer quoted me 280.00 for the repair which i declined and they charged me for diagnosis of 75.00. I ended up buying the lube for 11.00 and doing it myself. I really think if gm is going to sell cars they should be responsible for faulty parts they are putting into vehicles knowingly costing consumers millions yearly. There are many technical bulletins on the steering shaft problems. I'm just going to put any date in for incident date because this seems to be a recurring problem.

Did a report with the dealer 3 months ago and haven't had a call back yet about bringing my car in to fix the problem wondering how long will ittake to be calledin about this problem

Clunking noise when making a turn can also be felt through the steering column.the same thing can be felt at highway speeds.

I feel something in the steering wheel like a knocking noise. It happened about 2 weeks after i bought the car. You can feel it and hear it when i turn the wheel and even when i don't turn the wheel.

Turn signals only work some of the time and make a loud buzzing noise sometimes you can make them work by pushing the four way flashers but it is only a temporary fix..i believe this is a serious safety issue and there should be a recall for this problem.there is also a clunking noise coming form the steering column/front end.

There is a clicking noise when i turn the wheel, and i checked everything in the wheel and it all looked okay...so it must be in the steering... Ive read up on it and people are saying its the intermediate steering shaft.

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo.the contact noticed that the steering column was extremely loose and he heard a grinding metal noise.he took the vehicle to a dealer on two occasions and they replaced and lubricated the steering shaft twice.one year later, the failure recurred with the steering shaft.the contact is in the process of having an identical repair made to the vehicle.the manufacturer did not assist.the failure mileage was 37,902 and current mileage was 49,000. The contact owned a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo. While driving 35 mph, another motorist informed the contact that flames were coming from the front of her vehicle. While pulling off the roadway the steering wheel locked and all power was lost. There were no warning indicators illuminated. Two weeks prior to the failure, a diagnostic test was performed but no failure codes were found. The contact also mentioned that she received a recall notification for a key fob, but not nhtsa campaign number: 15v70100 (engine and engine cooling). The fire department was notified and extinguished the fire. A fire report and a police report were filed. The contact received medical treatment for elevated carbon monoxide in the blood and post traumatic stress disorder. The vehicle was towed and deemed a total loss. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The recall details for the key fob were not provided. The failure mileage was approximately 78,000.updated 06/28/17*ljupdated 9/28/18

While driving at highway speeds, vehicle tends to drift to either side causing very poor handling.flaws in the road causes the vehicle to wander all over the place.trying to have the problem fixed for 2 years now has completely exhausted me, yet the problem still exist.i hope and wish for something to happen resulting in repairs being made to my car, being that this is my first new car andisaved for years to purchase it. *la

The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet monte carlo ss. The contact stated while driving 30 mph, the steering wheel made a loud noise. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis where it was stated the intermittent steering shaft needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

While driving, the rear trailer end tie rod broke, causing rod to cut into tire, which resulted in vehicle being noisy. .also the front steering shaft began making nosie, but was repaired under warranty.

After complaining for 5 years to a dealer and car manufacturer about a clanking noiseinthe steering column, i brought the car to a private mechanic, who determinedthe car wasdangerous, and the manufacturers knew therewasa steering column defect in a lot of their cars, so they were quietly fixing the problem, but only when customers complained.i called the manufacturer and brought the car to a dealer again, and they said there was little or no defect.however, when i told them what my mechanic said they agreed therewasa problem and the car wasdangerous, steering could fail at any moment.then, theyagreed to fix the problem at a large cost to myself.according to my private mechanic and various on-line resources this wasa wide scale problem , and the manufacturers weretrying to avoid negative publicity.in the process, they wereputting the public at risk.there wasatechnical service bulletin that informed themechanics how to fix this problem.however, i have chatted with various car owners online, who had this fix, and they said the problem still existed..

Steering column vibration: at 16562 miles dealer found dry intermediate steering shaft and performed bulletin#01-02-32-001b(lubricated intermediate steering shaft).now at 33678 miles the problem is back.the fact that there is a service bulletin on this problem tells me that general motors is aware of this problems and as a result of searching this web sight i have found that i'm not the only one who has complained about this problem. This problem also is evident in the 2001 chevrolet impola which is almost mechanically identical to the 2001 chevrolet monte carlo.because this problem concerns the steering of the vehicle general motors should recall these cars and fix the problem before it causes injury or death.

Clunk felt and heard in steering colum.

Ongoing problems with the turn signals not workingand a continuous noise coming from the steering column/front end.have had it to numerous mechanics and they cannot figure out the noise issue, ie its not a tie rod or a suspension issue.

After hitting a bump in the road consumer heared a loud rattling noise coming from the cradle.

Engine cradle bushings making noise, dealer said o.k. To drive just a noise to deal with. Steering column had no grease dealership said it came from the factory this way.

Steering wheel viberates and visibly shakes from side-to-side after reaching a speed of approximately 40 mph. Vehicle pulls slightly in both directions on a regular basis. Steering column is not centered, and has not been since first day of ownership. Dealership has been alerted to these defects, but has not returned calls. Service call was originally scheduled in april of 2001, but dealership would not furnish courtesy transportation. Therefore vehicle was not left for service/inspection. Vibration worsens at higher speeds such as highway driving. Difficul to control and is thrown when hitting flaw in roadway.

You recalled some chevrolets, (impala, monte & ect) for the same problem that i'm having with my car, which is a 2001 chevrolet monte #[xxx] you recalled 2000-2003 last 8 #'s [xxx] through [xxx] which my car is between that.the only difference is that my vehicle has a 3.4 & the recall was for the 3.8 only.you really must recall the 3.4 also. Where i took my car they said there have been a lot of the cars that where 3.4 that they have replaced.updated 07/26/2012information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)
