2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. Consumer states brake failure and increased acceleration *tgwthe consumer stated as she made a right turn into a parking space, she applied the brake pedal, and it went all the way to the floor which resulted in the her crashing into a concrete pillar.the consumer also stated the air bags did not deploy. The consumer stated she had a second accident where she applied the brakes and they failed to respond which caused her to crash into another vehicle.

Front end collision with the rear of a pick up truck totaling car.

Power steering goes out when i accelerate and the reading on my radio says power steering and the alarm is activated as well to let me know there is a problem.when i take my foot off of the gas, i get my power steering back. This happens regularly.

As i drove from racine, wi to milwaukee, wi. To visit family for the 4th of july weekend as i was to turn car off to park i wasnt able to press down on the breaks, couldnt go into park, gear shift was stuck couldnt move it in to park had to put on emergency break in order to keep car in park! it left me stranded was very upset & confused!!!

Power steering went out on car pulling out of a mall parking lot onto highway. Almost caused accident because of sudden loss of power steering/turning on to highway. Drove car home and parked. Restarted next morning and worked fine.

Driving at 40 mph, all powered functions shut off - no power steering, hard to brake, and engine just quits. All "idiot" lights come on: fuel, oil, stability traction control... Just like before you immediately start the car, where all lights flash on. After two minutes of rest - i try the car again and it starts.today, (7/15), this incident happened within 10 minutes of each other. The fist incident was exactly a week from today on 7/08, same speed, same road. The cart just quits. I am using this car for this summer where it is actually owned by mother. The car was purchased from jim o'brien chevrolet in willoughby hills, oh.

On several occasions my car has lost power steering nearly causing a wreck. This is a danger and needs to be fixed but i was told i would be mailed notice on april 28 . I am very concerned for the safety of my child as well as other people on the roadways. My car also randomly loses battery power..i assume this is electrical.

Sometimes when pressing on the accelerator, the gears on the dashboard all make a clicking sound and go down to zero and then back up. This is accompanied by three dings and a sudden loss of power steering. The power steering returns after a few seconds, however the car is hard to control when the power steering disengages. This can cause the car to swerve and be difficult to steer. This is a big problems and i am unable to take the highway. If the power steering were to disengage while driving, a serious accident could occur since it's difficult to control the car without power steering. On the highway, where the speed limit is much higher than city streets, there may be a greater risk for the incident to occur. Gm has not yet recalled this vehicle, although it is known this model has the ion power steering which gm recalled in their colbalt and saturn models.

Takata recall the security system locked up and the ingnition won't turn over so the car refuses to start. This all happened when i put it in neutral and it just shutoff. Then refuses to start.the car was technically stationary, my foot was in the brake while it was in neutral. We were about to turn into a church parking lot when it stalled out and would not come back on.

The fuel gauge is not functioning properly. When i fill the car up completely with gas, the dashboard indicator reads zero and i get a low-fuel warning message. When this problem started, after driving 15-20 minutes, the gauge would then read 'full' again, but the 'check engine' light would come on, and during this time the remote start function would not work. Now the car reads empty at all times, the engine light is on, and the remote start does not work. This led me to run out of gas. I am worried about the car stalling while on the road, as i have read happening to other gm vehicle models, and i am worried about running out of gas again. Fuel system problems seem to be very common with gm vehicles, especially the malibu, and i would like to see the problem addressed.

I went to have the car inspected but the inspection machine cant read the car computer.

14v153 recall was done and problem came back was told i needed to pay for inspection / diagnostic. Computer scan shows same fail of shaft torque sensor

I bought my 2006 chevy malibu maxx from a local dealership and the first week i lost my power steering while driving. The message was displayed power steering. The mileage was 62,000. The dealership took the car to their shop and sent it back saying it was fixed. This problem continues intermittently for the next 20,000 miles. The last week before i had it repaired the power steering went out going 70 miles an hour on the highway. I could not steer at all and i lost my brakes until i shut the car off. I had to have the car towed to a chevrolet dealership for repair. The torque sensor failed completely and they had to replace the steering column. I was told then by the chevrolet dealership and also the dealership where i purchased the vehicle that this was a common problem and several chevrolets on their lot had been recalled for the same problem. This cost me $700.00 and also i had a near accident due to losing steering and brake function at 70 miles an hour. I feel this is a serious defect and apparently well known. If i would have been hurt i would have held gm responsible as they are aware of this problem. I was told that gm used saab parts for a few years until the problem became apparent. The chevy malibu maxx 2004 and 2005 models were recalled for this problem.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to the dealer last year for three manufacturer recall repairs, which did not remedy the failure. Months after the vehicle was taken to the dealer, it would not shift gears properly and the vehicle shook and vibrated randomly without warning. The contact had to apply force to the brake pedal and, if it were released, the vehicle would randomly stall. The vehicle was to be taken back to the dealer for further inspection and diagnostic testing to determine the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and provided no remedy. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.updated1/19/16 ln

The contact owns a 2006 mailbu maxx. The contact stated that the brake lights stayed on all of the time.the bulbs have been replaced several times. The contact stated that the electrical system could be overloaded.he also said that when you press the brake pedal the brake lights shut off and the cruise control does not function properly. There was a tsb in effect but the owner was concerned since there should be a recall. The brakes affect the cruise control making it decelerate and then it would suddenly accelerate.the failure mileage was 10,000.the current mileage was 94,000.

The vehicle unlocks the doors automatically by itself without the power door lock switches or unlock button on the remote key fob being activated. The problem occurs during driving the vehicle as well as after the vehicle has been turned off. In addition, the problem occurs when the auxillary power is on (after the car is turned off and there is power to the windows and radio - before the doors are opened) as well as after the auxillary power is turned off (after the doors have been opened and power to the radio and windows has been turned off). The vehicle is found with its doors unlocked when the driver returns to the vehicle (driver locked the doors and confirmed they were locked when leaving the vehicle parked). The vehicle also disables the security system when it unlocks the doors causing anyone to enter the vehicle without the alarm or security system activating.this creates a security and safety concern for the driver and passengers. The vehicle doors may not stay locked when leaving the vehicle which creates a security concern. In addition, the doors may unlock when driving causing safety concerns.

Several years ago vehicle started to exhibit ignition misses when making slow speed turns 10-20mph. Condition would correct itself when coming out of turns or entrance ramps merging into traffic. In 2013 and 2014 occurrence became more frequent (2-3 times weekly). Chevrolet dealer advised me two months ago that it appears to be caused by defective ignition switch and advised me to remove unnecessary weight from ignition key chain. I immediately did this and problem has not happen again.however, dealer advised that i could add my name to wait list for a new ignition switch, but would have to pay for the repair since my 2006 is not on the recall list. Since many other gm models have been recalled for this same latent defect i feel my vehicle should be added to the recall list for this problem.

My vehicle lost electronic power steering (eps) assistance when being operated in an underground parking garage. The vehicle gave an audible alert and warning lights displayed on the dashboard. The problem persisted after turning the vehicle on and off several times. Because the parking garage contained tight corners and required slow speed operation, i could not safely operate the vehicle out of the parking garage.the next day, the eps worked without a problem. This unpredictable and intermittent power steering failure is well documented in 2006 malibu maxx vehicles. In fact, chevrolet has extended warranties and conducted special customer service campaigns to select 2006 malibu maxx owners to remedy the defective eps. Even though it is the same make, model and year as other vehicles determined to be defective, my vehicle's vin falls outside of the range identified by chevrolet. The vin range identified by chevrolet is insufficient. Owners like myself who operate vehicles outside of the vin range are not being alerted to the possibility of defective steering components.theeps components are known to be defective in 2006 malibu maxx vehiclesand should to be recalled.

My husband was driving to work and the electrical system completely shut down. No power to anything.

Engine goes into engine power reduced mode while going 55 on a highway and soon the engine becomes disabled which disables the steering and the brakes.no injuries as i was smart enough to handle the situation, but this has occurred more than once and my car reads no codes for the situation.

I bought car from local dealer and on my way home i heard the ding and the power steering indicator came on and it became very difficult to turn my steering wheel while driving on interstate 85n. Luckily my exit was the next one. Called gm dealer, they said that it was a warranty issue not a recall. After reading about this vehicle many people besides me have had issues with this power steering. I can't afford to pay out $600 each time it goes bad due to issues when manufactured.

Driving along on a state hwy at 57mph, power steering alarm dings and power steering ceases and oh crap!! i'm not wanting to die yet! i maneuvered the car to the shoulder thankfully and restarted my car. After several attempts the power steering returned. Obviously the chevy company is waiting for enough accidents or deaths to offset the cost of a recall. Has there been an investigations? how many people have to die? i see many complaints, stories of mechanics that know nothing about it or charge for a "maybe fix." really??? please advise me of any real answers to this dangerous problem. I'll also be in contact with my senator sheila harsdorf and the state of wisconsin's department of safety about this problem. Thank you

We purchased our 2006 mailbu maxx in november 2005. Two months later there was a violent shake in the front end, the dealership turned the rotors because they were warped.then we started having trouble with the electrical system right after the warranty ran out.the rear wiper comes on by itself, interior lights blow constantly as well as headlights. Door locks work when they want to. Keyless has not worked for three years even with new remote batteries. Since the car has had 40,000 miles on it the power steering has been acting up. My wife has hit our garbage cans and even my truck pulling into the driveway. We cant even trade this piece of crap in because everybody knows the problems with this car. Our malibu has 78,000 miles on it and we have put 4 sets of brakes on the front with heavy duty rotors and three sets on the rear. Gm is not concerned with the safety of their customers. This car is crap and they know it. We should at least get 200 percent over trade in value to purchase another vehicle. Like a rock....more like a turd!!!!!

As the power steering is showing signs of failure and the dealership has not yet received the parts for my bulletin for the issued recall, the mechanic has now told me the torque failure of the power steering issue is leading to the failure of the ac condenser as they are both running off the linked pulleys. I would like to have this looked at by the investigative committee.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that while driving 45 mph, the vehicle stalled without warnings. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 140,000.

3/30/2007. 2006 chevy malibu. Contact states the drivers info center can not be read in daylight. *mc

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle's instrument panel on the dashboard has 12 safety messages that does not illuminate bright enough during the day such as the brake fluids, gas cap, door latches, engine disabled, tailgate, power steering and air bags to name a few.the vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that all the vehicle's instrument panels have the same light intensity for illumination.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the power steering warning light illuminated then the vehicle became difficult to steer. The contact also mentioned that the ignition warning light sporadically illuminated at various speeds and there was an abnormal metal odor in the cabin. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was found that the steering column and rack and pinion was replaced. The contact was also informed that the rear brake calipers needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 128,000. Updated 7/7/14 updated 07/14/2014

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. After the ignition key was turned to the on position, the vehicle failed to start. The vehicle was able to be started after approximately twenty minutes. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the starter failed. The starter was replaced five times, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 157,000.

I have had problems with my power steering over the years.but this was the worst it has ever been.i was driving 55 mph on the highway. The roads were clear on this spring day.my traction control, brake light and check engine light came on.then the power steering was chiming and the alert came on for that which effected my power steering.the instrument cluster was flashing on and off along with the gauges not working correctly.then the instrument cluster went completely out.so the instrument cluster was replaced.a couple of weeks later, this all repeated again.so this time the ignition was replaced.after all that, the power steering still chimes and alerts still come on which makes it harder to steer.then i have to stop the car, turn it off, wait and restart it.then it is fine for a while.my mechanic says the only code that shows up is for the 14772 recall.but my car is not part of that recall since it was manufactured in january of 2006.please do some research and expand the current recall to include all 2006-2007 chevrolet malibu and malibu maxx vehicles.repairs need to be done on these vehicles asap to any fatal or potential crashes.

Power steering was fixed 2 years ago due to recall. Now the car is doing the same thing, but worse now. Losing power steering multiple times throughout driving (one trip). Gm refuses to fix it again. I think it's unfair for them not to fix what is their fault. I constantly have to pull over & cut the car off & crank it back up, only for it to keep doing the same thing. It happens every 4 miles. This is ridiculous!!!!

Electric assisting power steeringafter complying with the original repair recall about 6 months ago,the same problem occurred twice recently. Lost steering control at slow speed. Req instructions to follow. For further repairs.

Lost power steering on acceleration onto highway several times over the last 2 weeks. Could not steer untill it reset at speeds of 50+ mph

I have received two recall notices in the past two months, one for the electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control; and the other for the transmission shift cable, which may fracture at any time. Both notices informed me that the dealer would perform repairs at no cost, but that parts are not currently available. Am i to continue driving my defective car and hope that i won't get into an accident caused by the above problems? i am very low income and can't afford to rent a car.

Last november,2013, i was driving my 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx lt onsimsbury rd. Inavon, ct when i experienced a very dangerous loss of power steering and the electrical system. Causing my front right tire to blow out.this made mycar to swerve and veer into oncoming traffic.t i was at risk of being hit by other cars. While waiting for roadside assist i was helped by the ct dot and avon pd.this was a harrowing, dangerous, and stressful experience for me. I would like chevrolet to cover all of the repair expenses related to this accident and all problems & repairs that followed since this is directly related to the power steering& electrical system recalls from gm chevrolet. They did not notify me directly about the power steering& electrical systemrecalls.i found out only this week august 10, 2014 after i called this with regards two additional recall notices i received of late regarding faulty transmission and brakes. They do not have parts or an expected date for repairs and have refused my request for a replacement vehicle in any form. I have spoken at length to their customer relations director as well as all three of the chevrolet dealerships i have used for service and purchase; oneill chevrolet, avon, ct, gengras chevrolet, east hartford, ct and carter chevrolet in manchester, ct,where i purchased the vehicle. None of them are willing to arrange a temporary replacement vehicle and have no further information on a date for repairs or parts availability. This is outrageous and unacceptable. Please advise consumer affairs and me as to how i should proceed. I am a disabled american and have no other transportation options other then my own car. Thank you.

End of july 2014, early morning, while driving 70mph on the interstate with clear dry conditions, my brakes began to pulse on their own and the traction control light began lighting up in correspondence with the brake pulse.. The cruise control shut itself off. The check engine light and brake light came on remain on and cruise control no longer works. This continues to happen throughout the entirety of my 60mile one way daily drive. I was notified of recall13036 which includes all of these issues., i took the vehicle in for a scheduled service for this 12/12/14. After waiting more than 2 hours to get my vehicle back (without the recall work being done), i rescheduled for 12/16/14. After completing the recall work the vehicle was returned to me with all error codes cleared. Less than 3 miles down the road, all of the issues returned. No cruise control, pulsing brakes and t/c light, check engine light and brake light came on and remain on.i contacted the dealership and they told me that they simply added lubricant to connections and that all of these issues are not associated with the recall. I read the recall notice to them, it clearly states all of these issues are related to the recall. The dealership (pete harkness/morrison,il) recommends that i bring it back in again and pay $90.00 for a diagnostic check and then i will need to pay for any repairs needed.

After four (4) minutes of driving car at 6:30am in the morning, temperature was 58 degree on 7/21/2014, the engine shut off. All powered functions associated w/vehicle did not work. All idiot lights flashed on.the message in display was "engine disabled." car was pulled over and shut off. After 4-5 minutes of rest, the car was re-started and driven back home about another two (2) miles.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the vehicle would jerk upon depression of the brake pedal without warning. The contact took the vehicle to jim keras chevrolet (2000 covington pike, memphis, tn 38128) where they performed services to the brake booster, master cylinder, hydraulic brake system, lower control arms, as well as several other unknown services. Three weeks after the repairs, the vehicle would not start and the vehicle was towed to the residence. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 241,404.

Engine goes into engine power reduced mode while going 55 on a highway and soon the engine becomes disabled which disables the steering and the brakes.no injuries as i was smart enough to handle the situation, but this has occurred more than once and my car reads no codes for the situation.

The vehicle stops randomly in the middle of driving.the reduced engine power light comes on and the car stops with no warning.this has happened numerous times to my 21 year old daughter and her 4 month old baby.there are no codes detected to troubleshoot the problem.the chevrolet service repair center hashad the car for 2 days and advised that they cannot locate the problem.this is a common issue on internet forums and i am surprised no one has been called. My daughter has to drive on the interstate to attend class and the vehicle has stopped on her. They are now releasing the car back to me with no resolve. Chevy obviously does not care to address this issue as it is a common one with several of their vehicles. If i sell the car, i am literally selling a death trap to someone else. Merging onto interstate at 55 merge speed and as entering onto first thru lane the power steering died out and acceleration dropped on its own.nearly hit by an 18 wheeler that had been safely back from my entry point before the steering and engine both failed.i pulled as hard as i could to the right and a bell rang but there was no check engine light or any other indicator light for the steering.when i braked, the steering came back and i was able to pull to the right out of harms way.there was no other car on the entry ramp or i am sure we would have been rear ended at high speedthis happens often in ordinary traffic at speeds between 35 and 45 once the car is warmed up when i attempt to change lanes and sometimes a bell rings and other times it does not.i received a recall notice #13036 and it describes symptoms included here and additional potential problems.the part is not yet available as gm has been telling me since march of this year.i have discontinued driving this car unless it is absolutely necessary and if the distance is less than 5 miles because it has not yet warmed up to cause the problem.this is a dangerous defect and we were lucky to have not been killed by the 18 wheeler.

My 2006 malibu maxx has 73000 miles on it.while driving, the air conditioning stopped blowing cool air.the outside temp was 95 degrees and my daughter and i both have asthma.took the car to the dealer today and will cost $1100 to repair and replace the a/c compressor!a car this young should not have this problem.my daughter and i were both using inhalers by the time we arrived back home!

The passenger side low beam light keeps going out. I have changed the light build 3 times in the last 2 months. The last time being saturday morning, then on the way home tonight it is out again. Last friday, it was working on my way somewhere and then quite. On my way home it started working again. It didn't matter if i turned, hit a bump, etc. It just goes on and off randomly. I have read many many complaints that this happens to others as well. I feel chevrolet needs to do a recall and fix this problem for the safety of everyone!

Cruise control stopped working, remote start stopped working, brake lights come on when pedal is not pressed and go off when pedal is pressed.vehicle shows stopping when driving and driving when stopping.will get rear-endedsame thing happened 3 years ago.gm technical service bulletin #08-05-22-009c issued in 2008.

Unit has had continuing intermittent power steering. Very dangerous at times. Bulletin 14116 is supposeto cover 2004-2006 malibu, but dealer says its not covered. How could a recall not be a recall?unit also has dangerous intermittent headlights. Bulbs fine, has defective sockets inside the integratedheadlight assembly. Other gms have had this issues but no recalls on the malibu.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving at 45 mph,the headlight bulbs failed without warning. The contact stated that the headlight bulbs were replaced on five occasions; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 165,470.

I noticed that my passenger side tail lights were very dim in further investigation i learned my passenger side brake lights were not illuminating at all when i push my brake pedal and when the pedal is pushed the tail lights do not illuminate at all and the problem continues into my blinker, reversing indicator, etc.. Also when i check my vin it tells me there are no active recalls for my car.

Brake lights stay on all of the time except when foot is resting on the brake pedal.have tried to change out the brake sensor and that doesn't seem to resolve the problem.brake lights are one both in motion or when car is just sitting

The brake lights go off and on without touching the brake pedal.

The vehicle was not inspected for the failure or repaired. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 102,000.

Fuel tank cracked at seams leaks fuel excessively. Contacted dealer in fresno ca they stated their were no recalls on this vehicle. I think their should be because this could be dangerous.

Driver info center said check gas cap,we replaced it now a smell of gas in car when starting it up.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contactstated there was an overwhelming smell of gasoline from the exterior of the vehicle. The dealer advised the contact that the fuel pump was cracked and would need to be replaced. The dealer also advised that there was a possibility that the failure would recur.the failure and current mileages were 83,089. Updated 08/19/10updated 08/23/10

The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 83,000.

Vehicle began stalling. Then, i noticed a strong smell of gasoline, and suddenly gas was pouring out near the muffler on the driver's side rear. Traced the leak once we got it home. The plastic line on the fuel pump had cracked. I lost over 1/8 of a tank after i parked it. I'm not sure exactly how much i lost while driving down the road. I am thankful that there were no sparks before i was able to safely park the car. I fear for the safety of my young children. I might not have been able to get them out of their car seats fast enough had i not immediately taken precaution.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the gear shift was able to be moved out of the park position without engaging the brakes. The dealer repaired the vehicle according to nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control), but the remedy failed to repair the vehicle. After the repair was performed, the electric door locks failed to operate properly. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 71,943.

Using my mother's 2006 malibu maxx on 12/24/08, the back liftgate came crashing down on my wife's head while she was loading the trunk. The next morning we saw that the driver's side lift cylinder snapped off its metal ball joint. Unfortunately, this cylinder is attached to the metal ball joint via a plastic cap. Where this cap is asked to not only secure the cylinder to the liftgate frame, but also rotate and pitch the cylinder. Anyone shorter than my wife's height would have been injured severely, such as a broken neck and/or crushed skull. The chevrolet dealer - jim o'brien chevrolet snapped the cylinder back on its ball joint and refused to repair, fix, and/or offer an alternative to prevent this situation from happening again.

Transmission: chevy malibu maxx 2006 ltz 6 cyc lurches speed under constant throttle & straight line road surface & steering while driving at medium cruising speeds 30-45 mph. Our maxx has had this issue serviced twice before; now it is happening again. While maxx was under factory warranty; the mechanic was told to blank the transmission's memory; this instruction was from an internal factory service bulletin. This chevy malibu maxx 2006 ltz has had only one owner. The transmission's memory is corrupted every 40k service miles.

Power steering failure while driving at high speeds in highway traffic. Intermittent failure. Several months of driving it would sporadically fail and then return back to normal. Eventually it failed completely. Went to have the ps module replaced only to discover the column is to be replaced with it. The vehicle is drivable, but feels unsafe and puts others at risk. Vehicle is not easily maneuverable at low speeds. Needs large space to turn around. Seems to be a common problem among this vehicle as i have seen many many complaints. Why is there not yet a recall on the ps module/column failure of the malibu??

My first occurrence was while driving across a railroad track at a speed of 35 mph....while driving i heard a dinging and looked to see my power steering light came on at the same time that i was crossing the tracks....tracks where uneven so i kinda went around the uneven part and couldn't handle my steering so i almost hit a car coming in the opposite direction...second occurrence has even more life threatening....while drivin on the highway at speeds of 65mph...i heard the dinging sound and my steering locked up completely(like when the car is turned off) i could not use steering at all and i had a semi right behind me ....i was approaching a curve in the highway so i slow down so thetraffic would go around me to hopefully get a chance to turn off the car and restart it to reset power steering....i had read about this problem online and that was the solution..itook the car to a mechanic where he did a road test and of course nothing happened....i only have 2 more payment on this car and to find out that the situation when fixed always recurs is very disappointing....please recall this vehicle before this problem kills somebody...my family is already aware of this problem and if i get into a accident they will be looking closely into this problem.

This has been happening for sometime now.i start my vehicle up to go, put it in drive and the car loses its power steering(steering wheel will not move) and the power steering warning shows up on the dash display.i also notice at a stop or at slow speeds the steering wheel jumps from right to left quite frequently.

This is a follow-up to odi confirmation number: 10610590 where the vehicle would completely shut off without warning. All powered functions were lost.the display screen would signal: "engine disabled."per the chevy dealer, the problem has been identified as a improper working pcm (powertrain control module), where the following error codes were present: p0601 to p0606 and u2109.estimated cost to repair, at this point, is $740.00 + tax.for peace of mind and of course, reasons of personal safety, we hope that this is the problem.

The transmission cable of my car quit working. I was trying to put my car in park when picking my kids up from daycare, and the car would not shift into gear. The car would not shift into park, drive, etc. When i thought i had put the car into par, the car proceeded to roll down the hill. I had to put the emergency break on, and all a tow truck. The dealership found that the transmission cable had to be replaced. Although this is issue is part of a chevrolet recall, my 2006 malibu maxx is not part of the recall, and i do not understand why.

This happened literally at the end of a 7 hour car trip- we got lucky.driving on i-75 south and approaching exit.begin to slow down and enter exit ramp. Steering wheel starts shaking profusely and immediately becomes extremely hard to move to either side. Panicking, i managed to control the car and slow it down to a very slow speed and put the hazard lights on, and slowly merge into a gas station that was, luckily, right next to the exit ramp. This was extremely scary, unexpected, and could have killed us if we were going the full highway speed and were not exiting on a ramp.

On 9-28-16, i placed the vehicle in reverse to depart a parking space, when i tried to put the vehicle into drive the gear remained in reverse.the transmission shift cable was replaced under recall on 03-27-15, for the previous 8 years the vehicle did not have a problem with the shift cable.the shift cable that was replaced under recall has now fractured.

Loose power steering during parking and driving.

The driver's seat tips backward when we sit back in it, and can rock back and forth when the car stops and starts, or if the driver leans back while driving. This happens no matter which position the power seat is placed in, up or down, forward or back. This is a six-way power seat control.

1 yr after purchasing 2006 chevy malibu maxx heated seats starting coming on when car was started. Dealer kinda said that we were liars because they said no one in the whole us had a problem with their seats.we went back 17 times in 3 months and they changed everything and still seats come on. Now they come on when your driving and they get very hot. Dealer does not seem to care nor gm. We have stopped going and telling them. We have complained for 4 years and they keep giving us excuses that they are waiting for gm with a solution. We would go to the dealer weekly and they would say they had not heard from gm. That's why we stopped going there. Problem seems to be getting worse as its mostly the passenger seat and it gets hot immediately after it comes on.i would say within 5 to 10 seconds after seat is on.afraid of getting burned and also a fire. What more can we do?any suggestions?

I have received two recall notices in the past two months, one for the electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control; and the other for the transmission shift cable, which may fracture at any time. Both notices informed me that the dealer would perform repairs at no cost, but that parts are not currently available. Am i to continue driving my defective car and hope that i won't get into an accident caused by the above problems? i am very low income and can't afford to rent a car.

The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 128,000. Updated 7/7/14 updated 07/14/2014

Brake lights stay on all of the time except when foot is resting on the brake pedal.have tried to change out the brake sensor and that doesn't seem to resolve the problem.brake lights are one both in motion or when car is just sitting

Driving from school saw a car ahead person had turn signal on to go left. Took foot off gas went to brake and turn wheel could not do either. The car was totaled.

Right after i bought the vehicle i was driving down a gravel road and my traction control, abs and brake light all came on at the same time and will not shut off. My traction control no longer works now.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving approximately 50 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal to stop the vehicle, but the brakes failed and the vehicle slid. In an effort to avoid rear ending the preceding vehicle, the contact turned to the left. The abs, traction control, and brake warning indicators illuminated. The contact coasted the vehicle to the side of the road. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed, but the cause of the failure could not be determined. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 200,200.

Three weeks after the repairs, the vehicle would not start and the vehicle was towed to the residence. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 241,404.

The mechanic stated it may have been due to a factory flaw as he had never seen both calipers fail together. The brake caliper seals were melted from heat and they were cracked/dry rotted letting the caliper sleeve rust. A month prior, the consumer noticed the power steering seemed stiff and the vehicle became difficult to steer, the consumer did receive a recall notice regarding a potential problem with the steering. On december 20, 2011 the consumer experienced another steering failure, slow acceleration, and overheating of the brakes. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where the mechanic believed there was probably contamination in the brake fluid, as it was milky. The mechanic recommended that all the rubber components in the brake and abs be replaced due to the contamination.

I had to replace brakes and rotors twice with in the last year.

Have owned the vehicle for 14 months and i am getting ready to replace the rotors and brake pads for the third time.after only a few months, you can feel the brakes pulsing, worse at soft braking than hard.i've also had the rotors turned and put back on once and the problem returned in less than a month.

Steering- when making left turns steering collumn pops as if linkage is slipping. Apparently a known defect at chevrolet. Steering column should be replaced. Loss of power sterring in the past at higher speeds, one complete lockup of steering wheel while vehicle was in motion.brakes- increasingly difficult over time to slow vehicle to a stop safely. Brakes were completely replaced at 51k miles due to an issue of wear at rates exceeding mechanical estimates. Dealership inspection yields no damages or problem yet test drive shows how difficult vehicle is to stop effectively.

There have been multiple times since i have bought my 2006 chevy malibu maxx lt that the power steering locks up causing me to temporarily lose control of my car.this usually happens when accelerating.the steering wheel locks up and it stays in its last position and the car dings.i have no message on my dash or radio.usually letting off the gas corrects the issue within a couple seconds.in those seconds before i regain control of my car, i have no control to keep me from hitting something.i've seen many reports online for the same issue.i've read some that have said it caused an accident or almost caused an accident.there was a recall for the chevy cobalt for the same issue.

Steering locked up when i was exiting the highway.i was going about 45 miles an hour. I heard the warning bell ding and the warning displayed "power steering failure".i almost crashed because i couldn't steer.it took all the power i could muster to steer.if my wife would have been driving it would have killed her.also my steering wheel sometimes will jolt back and forth sometimes when the car is idling in park.finally the steering makes a loud audible "thunk" whenever i turn the wheel out of neutral position, and it sounds like the wheels are going to fall off when i hit any kind of bump or rough road.as for the power steering failure i took it to the chevy dealership and they said that they could not duplicate it.it happened about a dozen times so far and the dealership shrugs their shoulders and says "it didn't do it for me".the knocking or thunking noise seems to be a problem on every 06 malibu on the road.is somebody going to do something about this? or do we just have to have enough fatalities to force something to happen?

Power steering intermittently fails on vehicle. Resets after turning car off.

While driving to school yesterday, my malibu 2006 maxx, the power steering locked up causing me to run off the road and into a ditch.the power steering has locked up before but only while it was in park, and i turned off the car and restarted the car.it reset itself and i was able to drive.luckily i was not hurt this time but this is a safety issue if there was ever one.i have done some research of this subject and understand that this has been an on going issue with malibu.after all the complaints what are they waiting for.....a fatality????

My 06 malibu maxx has a steering problem.the steering wheel will not turn easily at low speeds.it makes a clunking noise when i turn.i have read and this seems to bea problem with my electronic steering and it seems to be a problem for many of these vehicles.i am worried that this will happen at a higher speed.

While driving my 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx, i was backing out of my driveway when i lost power steering.i parked the car, shutit off, turned it back on and the power steering was working properly.a few days later i was driving down the road and again lost power steering.i pulled over and shut the car off and restarted and gained power steering back.it happened again nearly right away after doing the last restart.i again pulled over, shut the car off and turned it back on and power steering was back.this has happened 6 to 10 times in the last 1 to 2 months and there is no rhyme or reason to when the power steering gives out.this makes every trip in the car a potential hazard.

Driving down the highway, and slowed to a stop light. The car suddenly dings three times. I hear a high popping noise and the power steering warning light appears on the screen. Light turns green. The steering wheel becomes very hard to turn. It takes all of my might to turn the steering wheel left on a red light intersection. I barely avoided hitting the opposite car that was going left across from me. I was told they had a recall. Called the dealership and i was informed my car did not qualify in the recall because it was made earlier than the other models, and the recall had expired in 2014 anyway. Scared me to death almost hitting someone else.

Recall 14116, steering shaft torque sensor was performed 1 april 2016 at 37560 miles.on approx. 1-05-18, at approx. 76000 miles, the steering failed completely resulting in extremely difficult control of the vehicle.this was less than 2 years after the recall replacement.upon diagnosis technicians found that the steering shaft torque sensor and the electronic power steering motor control module had failed.the motor control module probably failed due to increased stress on the system due to the torque sensor having failed.the repair shop had two original equipment replacements for the motor control module fail out of the box before a good one was provided, and both units had to be repeatedly tested and adjusted before acceptable performance was reached.based on the history of these type failures it is apparent that gm has not corrected the problems with these system components.it cost $747.36 for parts, and $234.00 labor for the repair, not including tax.it is notacceptable that gm is not actually correcting the apparent design issues with these systems, but is continuing to use them in vehicles even with their history of failure.gm customer service offered no help at all for the cost of this repair even though their parts appear to be defective in design.their only response was that they had made the recall corrections at no cost once and would not do it again.yet the oem replacement parts failed repeatedly out of the box.it seems that gm should have some responsibility as they continue to produce defective products that appears to fail repeatedly..

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx.while driving 60 mph, the steering column locked.as soon as the contact removed his foot from the accelerator pedal, he regained control of the steering.the failure has occurred approximately four times.the vehicle was taken to a dealer and they could not find any failure. I was driving (with my daughter in the car).i turned the corner to pull into the parking lot at my place of employment and the steering wheel locked up.i could get it into the garage and into a spot but only with a great deal of effort.i had the car towed to a repair shop.he told me that it was an electric steering system and that it had to be replaced -- the cost would be in the vicinity of $640 plus.i took the car to a gm dealer to have it diagnosed.they confirmed that it was the steering column and it needed to be replaced.the car has approx. 52k miles.i think there needs to be a recall on this model.i am reading a great deal about many other instances similar to mine.i see there is a bulletin about the 2005 model but not the 2006.this is an extreme hazard.gm do right by the people trying to support american cars.please.

Steering wheel started jerking to the left intermittently and when i parked it and shut the engine off, i could still hear a motor running and then the steering wheel jerked to the left again and then the motor sound stopped.took to dealership who said they could not get the problem to replicate and no codes showing. Dealership said my two right side tires needed balancing, i thoroughly explained the problem again and still they said it needed the tires balanced & it would make a difference, $74.10 later no difference and now the steering wheel is jerking back and forth to the left & right constantly, is scary to drive, dealership put my vehicle on list for recall for electric power steering assist part but said no parts available yet, i need this car to get to work and it is not safe to drive.

Loss of power steering! driving less than 1 mile i loss all power steering! i made a left hand turn down a cul-de-sac street and when turning around at the end of the road i lost my power steering!i was shocked that after driving to the same bus stop morning after morning with my child in the car that i had lost control of the steering wheel due to the power steering system that failed!it was very hard to make the simplest turn. The difficulty that i had experienced took me by surprise. I put the car in park and shut the car down as soon as i was in a safe area. I waited then re-started the car and the power steering had come back. I could feel that it came back in the steering wheel as i barely accelerated forward worried that i might lose the control of the wheel again i waited for all the kids at the bus stop to board the bus before i drove back home! i immediately looked online about recalls for my car incase there was a known problem, not sure that there was actually a problem with my make & model & somewhat surprised i found alot of similar situations on the nhtsa website. There seems to be others that without warning like myself loss the power steering. I even found a suggestion that read to turn the car off if possible then re-start to have power steering come back. Even though that's what i did for the safety for the kids & others. I thought are you kidding me? turn the car off to re-gain power steering should i lose it again?i sure hope that i am not on a busy highway or where kids are close to the road should this happen again. I called gm to complain of this safety issue seeing as how i did find posted bulletins about power steering loss i had believed that gm would want to inspect the safety of my car . Since it is an known problem of safety..i was told by gm to bring the car in & pay for an inspection to look at the power steering system. Gm said the cost to look at my car could start at $65-$95 maybe be higher depends on what they do!!!

I have a chevrolet malibu maxx and the power steering has failed on 2 separate occasions. The first incident was when i was taking a left turn and the power steering failed half way through the turn. Luckily i was able to pull off into a parking lot and turn off the vehicle. There was a ding and the front displayed "power steering." the next day when reversing out of a parking lot i had the same thing happen although this time the steering wheel shimmied, then the ding, failure of power steering, and the display. I was once again able to turn off the vehicle and restart. Upon restarting the power steering resumed. Since these two incidents i have noticed that the steering wheel jerks a little with any turns. I am so glad i was not going at a fast speed or in heavy traffic as an accident definitely could have been caused. I have called and reported it to chevrolet and set up an appt with a dealer on monday. Chevrolet stated that it is infact a "special coverage on power steering" and in other cases have involved replacing the entire steering column. I am shocked that this has not been a recall and that other customers are put in this danger. Thank you for looking further into this.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that while traveling various speeds, the power steering assist suddenly failed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage and vin was not available.

Letter from senator nelson on behalf of constituent regarding steering problems on her 2006 chevrolet malibu; please send response directly to senator office and reference constituent.the consumer stated the front brake calipers failed to retract causing the brakes to overheat and catch fire.

I was picking up a friend & the car drove smoothly to their destination. I stop the car & put the car in park mode, rider got in & i put the car back in drive mode. A few moments later in motion on a city street i took a left turn& the steering wheel ripped itself out of my hands straightening itself out. Power steering light came on the center console, i had no power steering during the left turn & almost got into a car accident because of it. I had to muscle the steering wheel to safety & pull over.as of right now i am still facing this issue, power steering is an electrical issue& the problem is within the steering column. I looked up the issue online only to find out i wasn't alone, many others experienced the same issue as i did. This is a safety issue and needs to be recalled asap

The steering wheel will get hard to turn usually when i am in the process of changing lanes on the interstate and accelerating. Sometimes an alarm will come on and a light will come on for a few seconds and then go off. Here lately the alarm is not coming on. It is getting were it is happening more often, at least a couple times a week now. Most of my driving is done on the interstate and it is scary because i never know if i can trust my car when merging onto the interstate.

As i drive out of nowhere the steering locks up. It started off once in a great while then got worse with time. I have heard that this is a common problem with this model and other models of malibu. I just think it's very dangerous to know this is an issue and not do anything about it. A mechanic at chevy said that more and more cars were coming in with that problem.

After starting and driving, the power steering warning message displayed on the driver information center and a chime sounded. The power steering assist was lost and the vehicle reverted to manual steering. It took greater driver effort to turn the vehicle and could have resulted in a serious crash. Once the vehicle was stopped and parked, the power steering assist returned and the warning disappeared. It is only a matter of time before the issue with power steering reappears. We contacted our local chevy dealer service center, as well as the gm chevrolet hotline at 1-800-630-2438. Both advised that there was no current recall with our vehicle based on the vin and they refused to make appropriate the repairs. Please do further research to expand the current recall bulletin 14116 which covers model years 2004-2006 chevrolet malibu and malibu maxx to include our vin number, or better yet, to include all malibus and malibu maxxs of any year. Clearly this is a known issue with these vehicles and repairs needs to be completed asap to prevent potentially fatal crashes.

The vehicle was being driven into our driveway, the power steering light came on and the power steering failed.it came back on the next time i started the car, but the steering column has a very loud, grinding noise.per my regular mechanic, this is the subject of the recall 12221 for canadian vehicles, but my vin doesn't come up so no dealer will assist me.i can't safely drive.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the torque sensor kit was replaced by the dealer on october 13, 2014; however, the failure recurred in january of 2015.the contact stated that the vehicle was not operable and was unsafe to drive. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was unknown.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. While attempting to accelerate at various speeds, three chimes sounded, the vehicle seized, pulled to the right, and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. The contact stated that if the failure occurred while in cruise control, it would cancel the cruise control. The vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic. The dealer was contacted at 304-422-6501 and confirmed that the vehicle was not included in the recall and that the shaft torque sensor kit needed to be replaced. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and refused to provide a case number or email after informing the contact that the vin was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was 382,000.

Power steering loss:when starting the car and attempting to drive, the power steering light intermittently displays on the dashboard and power steering is no longer active.if the driver stops the vehicle and turns the engine off, the power steering may be reactivated by restarting. This vehicle had a recall issue serviced at a gm dealer for a torque sensor on 10/8/2014.3-1/2 years / 30,000 miles later, the vehicle was just diagnosed with the same issue (torque sensor) at around $800.the dealer and gm is refusing to provide any financial assistance with this current repair.it is very frustrating that a safety issue such as this, which appears to be a common issue for this model year, is not backed by the manufacturer.the loss of power steering, requiring extensive effort to turn, can potentially cause personal injury or death to this vehicle's occupants as well as others.if a repair for a safety recall only lasts 30,000 miles before resurfacing, i would call this a temporary band-aid, not a "repair".

Sudden loss of power steering: car started chiming with a power steering on the radio display while in motion proceeding through a stop light, with difficulty in steering.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that while driving 15 mph, the steering wheel seized violently, causing the contact's hands to be thrown from the steering wheel. The steering wheel regained normal function as the contact decelerated. The failure recurred numerous times, only lasting momentarily. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnosis where the contact was informed that the failure was caused by faulty electronics in the steering column. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 88,000.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx supersport. The contact stated while driving approximately 40 to 50 mph the steering wheel became very loose and it was difficult for her to control of the vehicle. When making a left or right turns she heard a popping noise in the steering column. The vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic who advised her that the steering column needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was contacted andadvised her to take the vehicle to a dealer. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.

We started having trouble with the power steering going out at very low speeds, especially in warm weather, only occasionally.then the problem worsened with the power steering going out frequently when turning to the right.only after we had obtained 100000 miles on the car did we receive a letter from the gm company stating there was a problem with the electrical power steering and upon contacting gm company they refused to fix their factory installed defective problem stating it was our problem.they refuse to fix the steering problem and it has caused us to have close encounters with crashes.the car is extremely hard to turn for my wife and is a real crash hazard.it was their mistake, but they refuse to honor their commitment to car safety like they advertise on tv.it is their problem and they should honor their safety commitment to their customers.we would like to have the car fixed at their expense not ours since it is their mistake.

After driving out of my garage, my steering wheel jerked and locked up causing me to hit the brakes. Power steering showed up on the monitor. Turned the car off thinking maybe i should have warmed it up a bit. Started car back up to proceed, steering jerked and locked again. Was too afraid to continue so called for a tow truck. Car is currently at the dealership, they are saying problem is the power steering pump motor and the electronic power assist system. They can replace the pump motor now for $650 and the eps assist when available. Wonder if i am being ripped off here!!! soon after i purchased the car, the power steering light would come on, i took it back to the dealer, was told they could find nothing wrong.the power steering light has come on several times over the years and steering would feel a bit tight or stiff at times, but never jerked or locked up on me. I thought is was due to the colder temps here in michigan.

I have a 2006 malibu maxx 3.5 v6. My wife was parallel parking when the power steering locked up on her. It was very difficult to park and maneuver the vehicle. No damage was done. I went online to find out about why it just shut off and found the link to this web-site. I sure don't want to see this go out when turning around a corner. This is a safety hazard not for us but anyone else on the road as well.

General motors has a recall for defective power steering that causes the power steering to fail for several seconds.we took our vehicle to jet chevrolet in federal way, wa to repair the vehicle according to the recall.they claim they did the work.however, within a couple of days, we continued to have the exact same failure with the power steering.we called jet chevrolet again to report it and brought the vehicle in again and they said it was something else causing the problem other than the recall.they want to charge us $100 to find out what the problem is.however, the car is doing exactly the same thing as before we brought it in for the recall.if they did replace the part, i'm sure it must have been a defective part.we need something done to remedy this situation to avoid a potential car accident.

On several occasions my car has lost power steering nearly causing a wreck. This is a danger and needs to be fixed but i was told i would be mailed notice on april 28 . I am very concerned for the safety of my child as well as other people on the roadways. My car also randomly loses battery power..i assume this is electrical.

This has been happening for sometime now.i start my vehicle up to go, put it in drive and the car loses its power steering(steering wheel will not move) and the power steering warning shows up on the dash display.i also notice at a stop or at slow speeds the steering wheel jumps from right to left quite frequently.

Warning comes on radio with warning beeps and all power steering is lost until you turn off car and restart. It can happen during any driving situation at any speed.the car has already had the initial recall taken care of for this same problem even tho we never experienced a problem with it then. Now even tho another recall was issued they say my car isn't in that group. Makes no sense.

The steering goes in and out. Feels like you have very little control of wheel while driving. When accelerating or entering higher speeds a ding goes off. Have replaced steering column through dealer. Need to replace steering gear and control module. This should all be covered considering these parts probably all go bad having a defective steering column to begin with. I don't feel safe at all driving my car.

My power steering suddenly went out suddenly on my 2006 malibu maxx lt while entering the freeway.it has happened 3 other times.it resets when i turn the car off and then back on, but i feel that it is very dangerous.i have talked to several auto shops and none of them can figure it out, except to tell me that it is very common.

The powersteering unit in this car has quit working several times. The information center reads powersteering. And the wheel jerks back and forth. The wheel is very hard to turn and is dangerous to drive. Sometimes the steering wheel while sitting at a stop light the wheel will turn to the left by itself. If you shut the car off and leave it sit for five minutes it will reset itself and be alright for awhile and then it happens again. General motors knows of this problem and has done nothing about it. I have read several complaints about this and wonder if someone has to be killed first before anything is done. This auto belongs to my stepson and he has a 8 month old daughter, i won't sit and watch anybody get killed because a stupid mistake like this electric power steering.

Power steering went out on car pulling out of a mall parking lot onto highway. Almost caused accident because of sudden loss of power steering/turning on to highway. Drove car home and parked. Restarted next morning and worked fine.

While driving a warning chime appeared thru the radio display "power steering" and the vehicle lost power steering. With great difficulty vehicle was pulled over to the side of the road and turned off. Upon restarting the car the power steering came back only to go out again. Had the computer reset and problem hasn't happened again, yet! check online and this vehicle and other models with the same power assist steering have been recalled as recent as 1212 in canada, but not in the usa. Everything on the internet, including gms website say the steering column has to be replaced. We checked with the local chevrolet dealer and there is no recall for this vin #. This vehicle is driven on major highways everyday, so i am having the steering column replaced at a cost of $550 out of pocket.gm's website says it is not a safety problem because it can still be steered off the road. This is my daughter's car and she can barely handle this car without the power assist. I drove it and lost the power assist and i bumped a curb trying to turn it into a parking lot. How can this not be a safety issue? can i be reimbursed for the cost of fixing this problem?

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx.whiledriving approximately 10 mph she lost power steering without any prior warnings.she was able to safely restart the vehicle and resume normal vehicle operation.the manufacturer was notified of the failure.the vehicle has not been inspected to determine the cause of the failure.the failure and current mileages were 80,500. The vehicle identification number was unavailable.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that as soon as the vehicle was started, a grinding noise began and the steering wheel shook. The steering vibration continued permanently while the vehicle was being driven. The contact stated that the failure began ever since the vehicle was purchased in october of 2018, but had become worse over time. The vehicle was not taken to an independent mechanic or a dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 70 mph, the vehicle veered to the left without control and the traction control warning light illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 178,000.

Power steering warning message came on, followed by difficulty on steering the vehicle.after shutting off the car, it was fine for a while then the power steering warning message comes on and the car gets difficult to steer.this has happened numerous times.

Usually while turning the power steering goes out on the malibu maxx. There are several complaints on it and the dealership has a bulletin regarding it. They want over $500 to fix their mistake. It happened 4 times on a 94 mile trip just last weekend. It usually happens a couple times a week. There is no warning as to when it will occur and you have no control over the car. The dealership told me to shut the car off and restart and the power would reset. That works most of the time but not a good idea if you are in heavy traffic. There will be a serious accident from this problem as it is reported more and more. People don't have the money to spend on repairs while the motor companies get "bail out" money. I want a recall.

Driving at a local grocery store and lost steering and almost crashed into car while pulling into a parking spot. This needs to get fixed and i'm not paying for something that is a well documented problem before someone dies because gm doesn't want to fix a problem that they know about.average cost of repair $700.average cost of a life, priceless.make a recall happen now.

Was making a right hand turn to enter onto the expressway and steering either locked up or became very hard to steer (it all happened quickly) causing the car to hit the curb and severely damaging the wheel, alignment, etc. Gm replaced the faulty power steering box (recall) but has found themselves not liable for the collateral damage sustained because of the faulty power steering. Gm says i have no proof that the damage that is visible on the vehicle was directly caused by steering failure. Really??!! i've always been a big chevy fan, but this leaves a very bitter taste that may never go away!!!!!

While driving power steering assist was lost which resulted in a dangerous driving condition.recycling the ignition key resolved the problem for a day or two before repeating. It appears this vin is not applicable to the gm recall for this known problem.recommendation to nhtsa is to reopen this recall and expand the vin range to include vehicles with this problem and not a select few just to save money.this incident occurs whether driving at interstate speeds or just starting the car and anywhere in between.

Steering wheel jerked to left and i had no power steering but i was still able to turn the steering wheel but was real hard. The indicator on the radio message screen indicated the power steering was not working. I pulled over and turned off the vehicle and restarted my car and the power steering started to work again only to have this happen again just a few miles down the road. I have been reading all the complaints about the steering problem that the 2006 malibu are experiencing. Chevrolet corp. Should have a recall on all the models that have the electronic steering and fix them asap. This is a safety hazard and someone is going to have a wreak and major damage is going to occur to somebody or their family.there is a recall in canada but not in the usa for this safety problem.

Car loses it's electric power steering randomly, which is a safety concern.apparently, there are 2 separate recalls on the steering components for 2006 malibus.gm says that 1 of the recalls related to my car and the repair was made. Since this is a "closed" case and the repair was made i have been getting the run around from both the dealership that made the repair and gm headquarters.please note that the issue is the exact same issue that the recall was for.clearly, the recall was just a band-aid, not a fix as i have read several other people having the same issue!radio illuminates that the power steering has failed (which is what the recall is for).this is definitely a safety issue and needs to be 1. Investigated 2. Fixed by gm and not the owner of the vehicle.the dealership wants me to pay $130 to diagnose the problem and then charge me to replace the same part the recall was supposed to fix!this is crazy and do we really need to diagnose the problem when it clearly says (and i can feel) that the power steering is failing?please investigate this as it is definitely a safety issue.

I have a 06 malibu maxx and the power steering keeps going out. When i first got the car, it was driving fine and the all of a sudden i lose power steering and the words "power steering" is displayed. I have to turn of the car and turn it back on so it can reset. It has been doing it more and more lately, and a few times i almost have hit someone. I called chevy to see if there was any recalls on this problem and they said no. There was a recall on the 2004 and 2005 chevys malibu with electronic power steering, but nothing on the 2006. Chevy also told me to take it to the dealer and let them inspect. Which i did and they can find no problem.

This car loses power steering while driving. 1st time i was merging into high speed parkway traffic and was frightened when directing the car was almost too difficult for me. My petite daughter would not have been able to do this if she had been driving. Turning corners is extremely difficult as the turning radius is greatly reduced. My wide arched turns bring me dangerously close to other vehicles on the road. I have chronic muscle pain from the muscle use it takes to turn the wheels of my car. I have been told by the dealer's service manager that they are aware of this issue but will charge approximately $900.00 to remedy it. The power steering system is electronic not hydraulic and i fully expect it is the same system presently recalled on the chevy cobalt. The problem descriptions of the cobalt and malibu are identical. This failure occurs whenever i drive my car - everyday!

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx lt. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the power steering suddenly failed and the power steering light illuminated on the instrumental panel. The contact received a recall notice later on in reference to the steering but the vehicle was over the mileage limit. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 160,000.

I have a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx.it currently will shut down the power steering and reduce engine power without warning.this is a unsafe condition and i have read about alot of these incidents on the web that results in the whole steering column to be replaced.

Steering locks up. This has happened several times in the few months i've owned the vehicle. It happens most often when attempting to turn while accelerating (such as turning left onto a busy road). Sometimes it happened upon acceleration without turning. There has been a recall for similar problems on this same make, model and year, however, when i type in my vin number, nothing comes up. It is most definitely a major safety problem which needs to be fixed asap. I cannot afford to do it at this time. Please tell me if perhaps my vin just doesn't show up, but i may be able to get it fixed at no charge due to the recall that involves very similar problems/hazards.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that there was an electric power steering failure that caused the steering wheel to seize. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 14v153000 (steering), 14e044000(steering), and 15v064000 (steering). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

My 2006 chevy malibu maxx has lost power steering three times. It has been to the mechanic twice. Driving at any time, but especially at higher speeds on the highway, is frightening because the power steering my go out unexpectedly.

I have a 2006 chevy malibu maxx.the power steering is lighting up on the stereo.there is a recall for other chevy cars that have the same power steering as our car, yet our car isn't part of the recall. Why?

Power steering failure. Locks up, will not unlock, steering column defect, multiple occurances, last six months.

Chevrolet malibus and other makes have a problem with the steering rack and pinion. Mine has been replaced about a year ago. It had a bumping noise that you could hear even standing outside of the car while someone else is driving. Gm needs to do a recall before somebody looses their steering and has a major accident. This problem is very common on these cars and needs to be addressed. I am an ase certified technician and have been for many years.

Electric power steering does not work sometimes when you start the car.if you shut the car off and restart the car and it starts working again.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx.the contact stated while driving 45 mph, the steering wheel seized as a result the vehicle became difficult to steer.no warning lights illuminated before or during the failure.the dealer vehicle was not taken to a dealer for diagnosis or repairs.the contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 15v064000 (steering) as a possible solution however the vin was not included in the recall. The manufacturer was notified and informed the contact that nhtsa regulated what vehicles was included in the recall and to contact nhtsa.the failure mileage was 190,000.

Power steering locks up and then resets itself.has not lockup yet while driving.have researched and many people have this problem with the same type car.i have to drive it but am afraid the whole time.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the vehicle was included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering), but the remedy did not correct the failure. Upon making a left or right turn, the steering wheel did not turn and the contact had to apply force to turn the steering wheel. The dealer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 96,000.

When driving at lower speeds (25-30 mph) my chevy malibu would chime at me and lose power steering, sometimes causing my car to go into other lanes and/or almost hitting sidewalks and curbs. I replaced the electric steering motor in 2013, but my car has not been part of the recall even though the same issues that are listed under the recall is what happened with my car. I had the motor replaced at a chevrolet dealership, so there is a record of the repair.

Power steeering failure while car is in motion-when car slows down it is almost impossible to control. Happened 2x-car towed to dealer they replaced power steering motor. Happened again 2 weeks later-dealer replaced steering column-$1400 total repairs! gm will not help because car is out of warrenty

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact was driving 2-3 mph in reverse when the steering wheel locked abnormally. The vehicle was turned off. The vehicle was restarted several minutes later and the steering wheel had returned to normal. The failure recurred intermittently while driving at any speed. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnosis or repairs. The failure mileage was 85,000 and the current mileage was 92,000.

Knocking noise in the steering column. Had to have iit fixed twice and it now does it again.this is a repetative problem and it appears that this car has a design issue.

Action: letter from senator richard shelby on behalf of constituents re: steering recall notice on the 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx ( send respond to tuscaloosa office).the consumer was informed, the parts were not available. Ref# 14v153000.

Power steering failed on the highway. Warning light lit up on dashboard. Car jerked sharply to the right. Several hours later same thing happened upon backing out of parking space.

At around 40 mph, on a reasonable acceleration to pass another car, the steering completely froze.an alarm (ding ding ding), along with a message on the display console said "power steering".when reported to the dealer -- the dealer said they could not replicate and there was no problem.though i have since avoided any sudden accelerations -- the problem has recurred many times (even at slight acceleration).in all cases, the commonality has been -- with acceleration there has been an attempt to steer (attempt to move into passing lane).at lower speeds the problem occurs mostly during parking.especially when a few full lend/right tight turns are required to get in/out of parking spot.the steering completely freezes.the only solution i have found is -- to completely shut down the car.then wait a little and restart.a few months ago -- the console message was different -- "power steering loss".this was when i was pulling out of a parking at an apartment.it was a single tight turn in reverse, followed by straightening and putting the car in drive.again -- a full shut down, one minute off, and restart helped.only recently did the recall vindicate what i have been experience since less than a year after i purchased the car.the dealer consistently said -- there was no notice or complaints. A quick search online (now) reveals many have experienced such for a long time.even with the recall -- parts are not available, and it is not known when they can fix. It is absolutely criminal to have something so serious be left unacknowledged or fixed.though the notice says -- it would take a lot more effort to steer -- i can tell you from number of times i have experienced -- no amount of effort would have even budged the steering (at speed or even low speed).there is a huge difference between steering like a manual vs completely freezing).

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving approximately 50 mph, the power steering light illuminated on the instrument panel and the power steering stopped functioning. The failure occurred intermittently and only for a few seconds and then functioned properly. Also the contact stated sometimes the ignition would have to be turned off in order for the power steering to function. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for repair but there was an appointment set. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was unavailable. The approximate failure mileagewas 36,000.

While accelerating on to the freeway, more while hitting the passing gear, power steering is all of a sudden lost or even correcting itself back to center. The "power steering" message appears on the radio display and a clicking sound is made. It has since happened at slower speeds as well. It feels like a very unsafe problem and it seems very common among chevrolet owners of various models around that year.

Power steering alert on dashboard. Power steering has been an issue for my car in the past and similar models have been recalled due to the electrical system failing or having issues.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx . The contact stated when driving various speeds, the power steering will fail and the steering wheel would become extremely difficult to maneuver. The contact would shift into neutral and restart the vehiclein order to reset the power steering assist.the dealer was informed of the failure and stated that they would need to diagnose the vehicle to determine the exact cause of failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 85,000 and the current mileage was 117,000.

Thank you.

My steering wheel tightened up and became almost impossible to turn. It started dinging and the power steering message appeared on the display screen. I just had the steering column replaced in march. I have been researching and it appears most owners of this car have the same problem. Something needs to be done before someone is seriously injured. My husband had to come drive my car home and barely made it.

Today when i drive back from my driveway, speed is only 5km/hour, when i turned left ,suddenly the steeling lose power i crash to my wife's car. Yeah, it is a only a small hit and nothing damage.then i stopped my car , restart it and it is ok .but after i drove 2 km, it lost power again when i turn left. I google, i found it is thousand of same issues happen while gm only recall the g6 cobalt but not malibu, why? theysuck ,i will never buy gm again.

My 2006 malibu maxx loses power steering randomly at various speeds. The wheel tightens, is impossible to steer, the warning bell sounds and the phrase "power steering" flashes on the display. Car must be stopped and turned off repeatedly sometimes to reset. Car has done this in traffic, on highways and freeways, and in parking lots. The failure occurs randomly and at random driving speeds. The replacement cost is over $1000 at the dealership. Chevy claims the problem can only be corrected by replacement parts that can only be issued and installed at a chevy dealership. The failure has occurred since the car reached 40,000 miles. After the corresponding recall of chevy cobalts and pontiac pursuits, i expected the recall to eventually cover malibu maxx.

Steering gets very tight at times at all speeds. Suspected that electronic steering assist mechanism is bad. This part was recalled in 2015 for failures.

I also have problems with my 06 malibu maxx.when accelerating onto the interstate, i cannot get my speed up normally. I hear ding, ding, ding... Then the steering locks up. Can not move the steering wheel. Also happens when making sharp turns. Almost threw me into a ditch once and almost bounced me into the guard rail once. I am disappointed that chevrolet has not recalled this problem. It is a true safety hazard. I am a loyal purchaser of chevy products, and i expect chevrolet to stand by me as well. Appears this is a well documented issue by all the complaints i read.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated while driving in reverse at an unknown speed, the power steering assist failed. The vehicle was shut down and restarted then resumed normally. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the power steering column would need to be replaced. The vehicle had not been repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 162,000.

I have a 2006 chevy malibu maxx that has been knocking near the front end, indicating possible cv joint issues or some other suspension or steering problems. I have had the tie rods replaced once but the symptoms later returned. Most recently, the power steering failed, locking during a right turn and causing me to drive out of my lane. This has happened on at least 3 occasions in january 2010 and thankfully has not resulted in an accident. Had my wife been driving with her bad back, she would not have had the strength to control the car and avoid a potential accident. I took it to my local mechanic who told me it was the electronic steering system and the column needed to be replaced. He also told me that there are literally hundreds of forums discussing this exact problem in the same model vehicle over about 4 model years but there was no recall. There is an obvious problem with the steering in this model vehicle and needs to be fixed and recalled before someone gets seriously hurt or killed.

2006 malibu maxx power steering light comes onsteering wheel freezes while car is moving steering column vibrates and yet no codes are present.

When the vehicle is cold the power steering does not work. As the car warms it begins to work. When you drive it will surprise you with periods of no power steering then it will come back causing you to over steer.

The power steering freezes up on my 2006 malibu maxx.it seems to happen whenthe rpms are way up, like when passing. When this happens there is no steering at all!!! the wheel is locked right tight. The dealer said that it could not happen that way. The car also looses steering at low speeds. The steering wheel turns but the tires do not.

Lost power steering on acceleration onto highway several times over the last 2 weeks. Could not steer untill it reset at speeds of 50+ mph

Intermittent loss of power steering while driving resulting in a requirement to drive with only manual steering which requires greater force and lowers the ability to react quickly to traffic patters dramatically.this happens both while the vehicle is in motion and stopped. Turning the power on and off results in temporarily restoring power steering. Worth noting, gm said the recall was closed for this vehicle and the repair was already performed, but failed to bring resolution to the problem, even though it is their sensor that is now not functioning again. Presumably vehicle was fixed with another faulty part from gm or was never actually fixed to begin with.this problem creates a huge safety concern for both the driver and other drivers on the road.

I have two recalls on this car that increase the risk of crash. Recall number 14116 power steering, and recall number 14152 transmission shift cable. Parts are not available for either recall and an estimated date for parts is not available.i have not had an accident, yet. However, i feel the safety of anyone driving or riding in this car is in jeopardy.

The power steering failed during a turn and caught me by surprise.this almost caused me to hit another car in the turn because the steering got really hard to turn.

14v153 recall was done and problem came back was told i needed to pay for inspection / diagnostic. Computer scan shows same fail of shaft torque sensor

Turned left onto an uphill road and gave it a good amount of gas to accelerate up to speed.had the rpms up and in the middle of the turn the steering wheel just locked up.i immediately let off the gas and the steering returned to normal. It was quite unnerving but i worked on many cars years ago and react accordingly to things like stuck throttles, and this.i just bought the car so i don't know the history of it other than the carfax check was clean.it appear that i should have done my research on this vehicle with this steering problem before buying it.there are so many people with the same issue that i cannot believe a recall has not been performed.however, there is a service bulletin that extends the warranty on this item, to any owner, to ten years and 150 k miles.do a search for it online.gm will replace the entire steering column. This is probably what i will end up doing.

Around 60000 miles you could hear and feel a clunking or popping coming from inside the steering column. This happened especially while turning the wheel or going over bumps. At approximately 65500 miles while my wife was traveling at 20 mph making a turn the power steering instantly and without warning locked up. After turning the car off and on again the power steering would reset but would still randomly lock up. I called chevrolet and explained what was happening and how this was a huge safety concern. If this had happened at high speeds my wife could have lost control of the vehicle. Chevrolet informed me that they had no knowledge of this failure. They also stated they would not help with the $1081.31 dollar repair bill for a new steering column module. As of mar 31, 2014 chevrolet has posted a recall for the sudden loss of electric power steering in the 2006 malibu maxx. After calling chevrolet to inform them i would like to get this new part to fix the issue they informed me my 2006 malibu maxx was not within the vin numbers affected. This is terrible if chevrolet knows this problem exists but is waiting for more complaints or deaths i guess. Now i'm just waiting and hoping my pregnant wife is not involved in an accident from sudden loss of electric power steering.

I have been reading over some of the 30 pages of steering complaints for the 2006 chevrolet malibu. I found out that i am not alone with this car problem. I just bought my car in august 2011 - it was a one owner with 31,000 miles in excellent condition. I thought i did my homework when buying but was not aware of the steering problems that existed. There was no recall listed . I would never have bought this car knowing what i know now and experiencing the problem first hand. I heard the two dings then the words "power steering" appearedon the instrument panel. I immediately had no power steering and was driving in heavy traffic. The car was extremely hard to steer and i was lucky to make it home. Since then, i have experienced this two other times. I am scared to death to drive this car. Do i have to get killed in a car accident before you will do something? i can't afford to pay these costly repairs and shouldn't be responsible for the manufacturer's defects. Please save my life and everyone else by taking action now!!!

I was driving my car to pick up my daughter from school 02/04/2014 and as i was turning to leave schooli heard a ringing sound from inside of car andmy steering wheel started to jerk left and rightthen i pulled over and stopped and my steering wheel was moving left to right with out me touching it . It was as someone was doing it and i couldn't see them and while driving on freeway it was very unstable to drive so i have to drive slow because it would jerk unexpectedly during my drive i felt very unsafe when i drive with my 4and 14 daughter and mom year old in the car i have owned a chevymostly a good part of my life i have been unable to afford to get it fixed and someone told me of the recall . So i called the dealer and was told my vin number was not part of the recall but it had a 150,000.00 mile warranty on part but he said i have to have a test doing to see if the steering motor is bad for $103.00 and if it is motor for steering it would be fixed and they will wave test charge . It says power steering when it audible sounds in car on radio display panel i couldnot let him do the test cause i didn't have the money if they said something else is wrong so now it is gone almost completely . My shoulder are very sore from having to drive this car to work and to get my kid and i am still making payments on it to . Maybe after i get into a major crash and my family dies or someone else dies from not being able to control car when it is needed maybe you will do something about it please wave test fee or something so if i take it in to get fixed so you can have a happy buyer of chevy autos.

Electric power steering fails,

My steering wheel suddenly started moving back and forth while stopped or parked.i call gm re: recalls. It seems they are not acknowledging the problem. My coworker has a malibu and has the same problem.hers is 2008. I've been researching through social media and have come across 25 people thus far with the same problem

Power steering goes out when i accelerate and the reading on my radio says power steering and the alarm is activated as well to let me know there is a problem.when i take my foot off of the gas, i get my power steering back. This happens regularly.

Electric power steering in the 2006 chevy malibu maxx is defective.it goes out while driving.i have read on several blog and community websites that several others that own 2006 chevy malibu maxx have the same problem.the company should recall this at once and fix all impacted vehicles before someone dies.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that while the driver traveled approximately 50 mph, the steering wheel failed as the power steering warning light illuminated. The driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a road barrier.the driver suffered injuries to the face, head, hands and ears. The police were called to the scene.the vehicle was towed by the contact's insurance company for further inspection. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure and current mileage was 86,000.updated 87/15/14 updated 08/25/2014

2006 chevrolet malibu maxx.consumer writes in regards to dissatisfaction on how recall #14116 has been handled.the consumer stated upon completion of the recall, she continued to experience a sudden loss of power steering assist.

Steering wheel failure caused car accident.while driving through a freeway tunnel, the power steering went out and made it impossible to steer causing my car to hit the tunnel wall.the car had less than 40,000 miles, yet the power steering indicator went on.the power steering reset and went back on, after the car was restarted.please initial a defect investigation or a safety recall before this happens to someone else.

The power steering assist in my 2006 chevy malibu maxx has suddenly stopped working twice.i had my mechanic look into it and it was a confirmed problem for the 2005 models but not the 2006.i feel this is a huge liability issue that needs to be addressed immediately, regardless of mileage.if the manufacturer knows its an issue, it needs to get fixed before someone gets hurt.i've found numerous complaints on the internet about this problem and we need your help to fix it.

Steering column replacement 8/17/2009 and again 10/29/10 after recall.failed again and just had to replace.gm did not notify customers that there was a special coverage adjustment - power steering adjustment issued 5-23-2012.under this i was covered by miles but not by date.this was clearly a way for gm to not fix this persistent problem.they clearly knew this was a problem but did not notify customers.they would not cover this work even though they clearly used sub par parts in there recall work.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact was driving 50 mph when the power steering failed and the steering wheel became increasingly stiff. The power steering would reset itself right away when the vehicle was shut off and then back on. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 104,000.

Power steering became inoperative, wouldn't turn.

The power steering column started to clunk when turning when car was a year old..took it to a dealership and they greased the column...didn't work...took it back, lthey greased it again... Same thing....now i get a messages - power steering and reduced engine power when driving. This is very dangerous cuz i have little power so i lose speed on the highway and its very hard to turn the wheel.

My 2006 chevrolet malibu's power steering went out twice on 02/05/2010. I was driving on a straight away and at low speeds at the time of the incident so this did not cause me to crash. However i'm concerned this will happen again at higher speed or a more unsafe time. This appears to be much like the cobalt investigation pe10005.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx.while driving at any speed, the contact stated that she would lose power steering making it difficult to control the vehicle.the vehicle was taken to a dealer who advised the contact that the vehicle was operating as normal. The manufacturer was not aware of the failure. No repairs were performed.the current mileage was 57,000 and the failure mileage was 56,700.

Bump sound in front end when starting from a stop or braking and turning. Dealer says it is a power steering shaft. They lubricated it and tightened it before warranty expired. Within 1,000 miles problems returned. Now warranty has expired and it's my problem although gm has a replacement steering shaft that will correct the problem.

I have waited 3 years for a recall for my steering problem which started 08-2012 with 75,000 miles.on 03/13/15 i took my car in for recall #14116 with 95,000 miles.the fix failed completely.on 07/07/15 with 98,800 miles i returned to the chev dealer for a diagnostic.which cost me $108.00.received a call from dealer, after road test and diagnostic, could not find a problem.next day i took the mechanic for a test drive and he saw the problem.alert chimes, power steering displayed on the dic and loss of power steering.after talking with chevrolet tech support there best guess was a failing power steering control module. And wanted $650.00 plus the $108.00 i paid for the diagnostic with no guarantee that it would fix the problem, may need other repairs.i declined.i did more reach and found technical service bulletin # 10183a, special coverage program.10 year or 150,000 mile warranty on the steering column assembly.returned to dealer on 07/13/15, 98,800 miles and had steering column assembly replaced under the warranty.no change, the problem still exist.more reach found all vehicles that have recall #14116 done failed to work.99% were told by the chev. Dealership like me that the power steering control module failing.i'am requesting that nhtsa add the part to the recall list or make chevrolet do something to fix the problem in less than another 10 years.have contacted chevrolet customer assistance center no reply after 3 business days.

While making a left hand turn on to a road my power steering completely went out and i just about ran off the road into a tree.this problem occurs just about every day and it is now to the point where i wont let my wife drive my car or let my kids ride in it.i have been told that i will need to replace the entire steering column and that the approx. Cost will be $1000.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the power steering warning message illuminated and the steering became difficult to maneuver. The failure occurred intermittently at different speeds. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic for diagnosis. The mechanic stated the steering column and the steering control motor module would have to be replaced. The mechanic informed the contact there was a manufacturer recall for the steering. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated the vehicle was not included in the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. While the vehicle was stationary and while driving various speeds, the steering wheel seized on numerous occasions. The contact stated that the steering wheel became extremely difficult to turn left or right. Dave hallman chevrolet (1925 state street, erie, pennsylvania 16501, (877) 260-0369) was made aware of the failure. There was no diagnosis performed and the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

My steering wheel locked up when i was turning, when i turn my steering wheel sometimes it makes a popping sound. Then power steering will appear on my message screen on my radio.

For the past several months power steering failure with left turns. Yesterday complete failure, fortunately it locked up in my driveway. Steering wheel jammed up with the slightest turn.

The electric steering assist system continues to fail on a regular basis. It will lock up and the steering wheel will not turn.so far, this has only happened at low speeds and has not caused a crash.i have had it into dealerships 4 times so far.although dealership personnel have experiences the failure, no code is generated therefore chevrolet will not pay for repair.the car is under warranty and only has 25,000 mile on it.

Intermittent loss of power steering that occurs under two different scenarios. Upon hard acceleration (as when entering a highway), steering will periodically lock-up with a series of 4 chimes coming from the information display panel on the dashboard. Power steering assist returns upon deceleration. Also, i've have had several instances of power steering loss when backing up in colder winter temperatures. Power assist returns after turning off and restarting the vehicle. Dealer has been unable to recreate either scenario as it happens intermittently, the vehicle has not been repaired for this defect nor has it been in an accident but let's not wait for one. It's quite obvious from thousands of internet posts that this is a known problem that gm refuses to acknowledge. An nhsta recall would be nice.secondly, the vehicle has had numerous repairs to front suspension, steering and brake components that should not fail within the first the 60k miles of ownership (some were replaced with less than 35k). Components replaced include; strut tower assembly, both tie rods (inner and outer), steering column, right rear caliper (snapped parking brake cable), all four brake rotors replaced. For the folks who spent their hard earned money on thier malibu maxx and are reading this online, please take the time to post your stories. Gm should be held accountable for their inaction and refusal to acknowledge serious steering related defects. It won't happen until the nhtsa receives enough complaints to force a recall.

Within 1 week of purchasing the vehicle used i could hear a clunk when turning the steering wheel.i took it to the dealer and they said it was a 'steering column gear' and fixed it.within 6 months the sound started again, i took it to my local mechanic he suggested replacing the rack and pinion.this stopped the sound for about 6 months, this time the sound not only came back but the steering locked up while merging onto the freeway, when i let my foot off the accelerator the steering came back.this lock up has occurred 2 more times, making a total of 3 steering lock ups in a years time.

While driving 70 mph, the steering wheel seized and excessive force was required to move the vehicle. After a couple of minutes, the steering wheel performed normally. The failure recurred multiple times throughout the day. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 15v064000 (steering). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving between 40-70 mph, the steering wheel seized and excessive force was required without warning. After a couple of minutes, the steering wheel performed normally. The failure recurred multiple times. The contact received a notice for nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). The dealer was to replace the torque sensor.the vehicle was repaired under the recall; however, the failure recurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, but they were unable to locate a failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unavailable.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving approximately 30 mph the power steering locked and it became difficult to maneuver the steering wheel.after the vehicle was restarted the power steering functioned normally. The mechanic was unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 61,000.

Power steering all of a sudden stopped working on multiple occasions.

Thank you

Power steering quits working on a 2006 chevrolet malibu.

Auto has electric steering.at times the steering acts erratic and becomes difficult to steer.afraid in a emergency situation that the steering may not react in time.

I was driving to work yesterday morning and my steering wheel locked up so that i couldn't turn left or right. This continued to happen on my way home from work as well to the point it was incredibly difficult to turn the steering wheel even an inch to the left or right. The vehicle was in motion when this happened and was on both side streets (20-30mph) & the highway (65mph).

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving approximately 40 mph, the contact stated that the power steering light illuminated on the instrument panel and the steering wheel became very stiff and difficult to turn. The contact pulled over and shut off and when it was restarted, it operated properly. The contact also stated that the steering wheel would involuntarily turn to the left and right when the vehicle was stopped and or in motion. The contact called both the dealer and the manufacturer who stated that the problem was a common failure. The vehicle had not been repaired. The current and failure mileages were approximately 101,000.

I was taking my granddaughter to school and the power steering went out as i was pulling in to the school.i turn off the car to locate the power steering pump but could not locate it.when i started the car it was fineso when i got home i found out that this is a big problem and gm is not doing anything about it.what is itgoing to take for somebody does something about it. I believe gm was one of the companies that was helpby the government with tax payers money the same ones that are having this problem, please you need todo something about this big problem that gm is ignoring before is to late for some body or family. Thank you

2006 chevrolet malibu maxx - 1st incident was turning into a parking lot, the wheel was extremely hard to turn "power steering"flashed on the console display, parked the car and turned it off and on, and it was working fine; about 12 times since may, i start the car and the wheel will not turn, the check engine light comes on and the "power steering" display on the center console flashes, it sometimes takes about 10 tries, but it eventual starts correctly; about 4 of the 12 incidents have been while driving, it usually happens on turns, switching lanes, all at relatively slow speeds; it has been in a chevrolet dealership five times with expensive repair bills (a sensor module replaced/repaired, steering column was replaced, sensor modules/solenoids replaced, a relay/sensor replaced in the column, last visit there was no code, so the mechanic said he could not do anything and to wait until it does it again and keep it running and they would come tow it, however the last time it happened, i was on business 2 hours away and it wasn't possible for them to do it)and the problems continues and appears to be getting worse (more frequent and takes more restarts to work properly); even more disheartening is that the dealership claimed to have never heard of this problem, but i've found many blogs with owners with the same problem.

I was driving my car around 15-20 miles and i heard a chime. I thought the car was low on fuel; i looked the instruments panel/display, and i noticed a message on the screen "power steering". I had 2-3 previous (dealer service) incidents before because a clunk noise when turning.

I started up my 2006 chevy malibu power steering has stopped working power steering warning flashed on dash. This has been a continuous problem. Now the power steering does not work at all.

2006 chevy malibu maxx - 2 problems1. Metal to metal noise as steering wheel is turned2. Vibrating noise around dashboard all the time.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx.while driving at any speed, the power steering fails.the dealer advised the contact to bring in the vehicle for a diagnosis.the vehicle will be repaired at the owner's expense and is becoming very difficult to drive.the failure mileage was 65,000 and current mileage was 77,000.

My 2006 malibu maxx has been have issues with the steering system. Started out with an intermittent clunking noise several months ago.the car has only 67,000 miles on it.now it clunks every time you turn the steering wheel.the front end has always road ruff like a steering vibration but thought it was just the make of the car. Our 00' monte carlo and 00' impala in comparison never road like this.thought it was the tires so we upgraded to a better riding tire, did not make a difference. Over the last couple weeks steering noise getting worse, sensor light came on indicating power steering. Check with mechanic and cannot find anything that appears wrong on vehicle. Just this weekend on the entrance ramp on the interstate the wheel just jerked to the right.was able to bring it back to central position quickly but was concerned.happened today to my wife on the way to the store on a two lane road. Luckily it jerked her to the right and she was able to steer it back to the center position.concerned of potential for serious accident and will not be so lucky next time.after plugging in steering issues with malibu maxx's, i was shocked to see hundreds of complaints on forums and consumer sites regarding a range of years with the maxx.gm needs to wake up, does it take people dying or seriously getting hurt before they will pay attention to all these people and their issues and serious ones at that.my husband is a ford mechanic and wanted me to buy a ford because of quality issues, but i love the style of the maxx, the cargo capacity and now i'm having second thoughts as no one seems to be getting help other than gm has some solutions that are costing the consumer lots of money and there are still issues after the fixes.i'm seriously considering getting rid of it and settling for a car that will insure me a safe ride and keep my passengers safe.wise up to this before people are seriously hurt.thank you.

While driving, when you accelerate, the steering wheel locks up and you can't steer the car, losing all control. It locks up for a second or two.this car was recalled for the steering and many other issues, and we took it in to bunnin chevrolet in culver city, ca for the repairs.they repaired it under the recall, but it did not fix the problem. The steering still locks up and it will do it multiple times in one driving session.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the steering wheel was difficult to turn and excessive force was required. The contact also stated that the power steering warning light illuminated. The contact mentioned that when the vehicle was restarted, on some occasions the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the power steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). The failure mileage was 103,132.

Power steering has failed intermittently and briefly with no warning at various speeds and upon movement from a parked position.

The intermediate shaft which is connected to the steering column was replaced in 2007 when the vehicle had less than 30,000 miles and was under warranty.it has to be replaced again at 83,00 miles.this is definitely a gm design issue.the electronic power steering module has been replaced, the rack/pinion has been replaced and neither part should have to be replaced when the vehicle is under 80,000 miles..gm customer service refuses to accept that this is not normal wear and tear of a vehicle even though this will be the second replacement of this part.hundreds of owners of this 2006 malibu maxx have the exact same issue therefore it can not be the driver but is definitely a engineering design issue.gm needs to be honest and own up to the failures of their vehicle designs.there are losing loyal customers because of their inability to provide a recall on this vehicle.it is their responsibilityto provide the consumers with safe vehicles.steering issues are definitely a serious hazard.gm must be held accountable for their vehicle failures.this vehicle needs to be recalled and at the very least gm should pay for the repairs.

There was a recall for electric power steering mine was taken care off before i purchased the vehicle. However, it lost electric power steering again and is no longer under recall warranty.

2006 chevy malibu, power steering fails in motion or upon startup. Repairs require replacement of both the ps sensor module and the ps column. Costs any where between $1500-$2000 to repair. Steering becomes very difficult, could be hard to avoid accidents or safely steer clear of road debris.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact received recall notices for nhtsa campaign numbers: 14v153000 (steering) and 14v224000 (power train); however, the parts needed to repair the vehicle were unavailable. The manufacturer was not made aware of the delay. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact had not experienced a failure.updated 10/23/2014*lj updated 4/20/15

I have owned this vehicle for about 2 years and for the last year the power steering message comes across my radio display everytime the vehicle is on and stays on. My power steering pump is electric and occasionally i will lose my power steering while i am driving

While on the road, my steering wheel started jamming up and then struck, dash board light illuminated. After restarting engine, it worked fine. For having this problem repeated for several times, i got the appointment with dealership and called chevy customer service. I was told of the problem being known and common in all the 2006 malibu and other make and model in which such power steering module/ parts have been used. When i asked, why i was not informed of such problem, i was told that it will repair at no cost if only the problem is duplicated at the shop. After repair on (feb 01 20011), in a phone call, i was told that there is no paper work for problem/recall/ warranty/ what so ever, but the work is covered for 12 months and/or 12000 miles altogether. This particular car has been brought to department of transportation's attention under lemon law in 2008, but it was not justified based on hearing was scheduled after allowed timeline.what a bummer!!! this time knowing the problem, gmc is not recalling or addressing it before any disaster strike and someone loose his/her life.thanks a lot chevy.... You are the american revolution.

I have a 06 malibu maxx and the steering keeps locking up. Why this issue has not been recalled i do not know. This is a common issue with the malibu and am very upset that the issuse has not been addressed!!! someone will be killed because of this and will be headed to court before it is taken seriously!!!

My wife was driving our daughter to school and was getting on the freeway and all of a sudden the electronic power steering went out making it very hard to steer the car. It happened twice that trip and the only way to correct it is to turn the car off and restart it. Took it in to the shop and found that the power steering control module needs replaced. Notice that there have been similar complaints like mine and wonder if it is going to take an injury or death to get it noticed? i hope not.

While on exit ramp from one interstate to another interstate highway during a veer to the left, car suddenly veered right & crossed a lane of traffic heading for an embankment at approximately 60 mph.i slammed on the brakes, unable to steer, which caused my car to turn 180 degrees and slid into the embankment.had i not done the 180 degree spin, i would have hit the embankment head on, likely being seriously injured or killed.the recall repair took place and obviously failed.i will never be able to trust driving it again.

I have a 2006 chevy malibu, i purchase this car used last february 2009 and about two months ago, the power steering light begin to come on. A couple of times i needed to turn the car off and restart it. I took it back to the dealership and i was told that it would cost about $600 for them to replace thesteering wheel, or fix the problem. I was also told that this problem would not cause any problem at that time. Today 03-02-2010i read an article concerning recalls on gm cars 2005-2010 cobalt, but due to the information that is provided, this is the exact same problem i am having with my 2006 chevy malibu. My concern is how do i go about having the power steering problem rectified as well for this car.

Driver info center said check gas cap,we replaced it now a smell of gas in car when starting it up.

Driving from school saw a car ahead person had turn signal on to go left. Took foot off gas went to brake and turn wheel could not do either. The car was totaled.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx.while driving 55 mph, the steering became loose.the contact overcorrected her turn.in addition, the steering wheel locks intermittently.the dealer stated that they have not had any other complaints related to the steering; therefore, they referred the contact to nhtsa to file a safety complaint.the failure mileage was 48,000 and current mileage was 48,050.

The gear box on the steering column makes a popping sound when you turn also the steering wheel jolts when it does this it has been replaced every month since then and it still does it. It will not do it for about a week when i have it replaced but then it starts to do it again.

The steering all of a sudden became hard to steer and happens intermittently still and the car pulls to the left.

The electrical power steering on my 2006 malibu maxx lt has failed repeatedly.i took it to a chevrolet dealer, the unit locked on the service department doing simple parking lot maneuvers. The service department said that the steering column and eps unit had to be replaced however the failure will happen again.this problem can not be fixed, it can only be replaced with defective parts since the defect is inherent in the electrical power steering system.i have reported this safety issue to the chevrolet hot line as have other owners and still no recall.i was on the atlanta interstate 85, it locked on me and i thought that for sure a serious accident was going to occur or worst death.this failure happened three times in one day.this is a serious safety issue and has been reported for several years, please do not wait until someone is seriously injured or dies as a result.a simple internet search shows that this safety issue has been reported without results.again, i ask that you please recall this vehicle and protect the american consumer from a death trap.i can not drive this vehicle knowing that this failure can occur at anytime without warning.even if chevrolet does pay to fix my vehicle, this failure will happen again.

I recently bought this vehicle for my 18 year old daughter to take with her to college.we have owned it approximately 3 weeks now.on 7/30/13, we were driving down a local city road at approximately 45miles per hour, heard a dinging alert sound, and immediately lost power steering.she was able to move to the emergency lane to get out of the flow of traffic.she turned the vehicle off and when the vehicle was restarted, the power steering returned to normal.on 7/31/13 she was alone in the vehicle, and was once again traveling in town and lost the power steering twice on that trip.the first time she was driving at approximately 25 miles per hour, and the second time going around a sharp curve going approximately 10 miles per hour.i am frustrated due to the fact that there has not been a recall on this vehicle as it is an extreme safety hazard with over a hundred complaints on this site alone.i have also found many other complaints in other online blogs.i have been told at this point that i could replace the steering column, the eps fuse, the alternator, the grounding wire, and even the motor and assembly for the power steering and that in some instances none of these expensive repairs have fixed the problem.what is it going to take before someone does something to hold chevrolet accountable for their product? is it going to take multiple deaths and/or multimillion dollar lawsuits to make someone listen and do something about this?what if this vehicle was one that you purchased for your child?would you put them in potential harms way?how many complaints does it take for action?????

Almost impossible to steer while accelerated, chime sounded

While i am driving the steering wheel will lock up and my dash board will start blinking then the message center will say "power steering"now everytime i am get to 45 mph the message center will start blinking.

Power steering went out abruptly in 2006 chevy malibu maxx making it difficult to drive on crowded roadway. Condition did not improve until car was brought to a complete halt, turned off and restarted.this condition has occurred previously and was addressed by my chevrolet dealer's service department at no cost. Apparently the "fix" didn't last. When i reported this recurrence to the same service manager he quoted me a substantial estimate cost for repairing the condition. When i mentioned the growing number of complaints that i've monitored he told me that there have been no recalls only bulletins and that i will have to pay to get this dangerous condition repaired again.

This has happened dozens of times before gm did the "campaign" to lessen the affect on the steering.normally while accelerating hard around a corner or up a hill, the powersteering would literally jerk the wheel from your hands and attempt to straighten the wheel.obviously this is extreme disconcerting and dangerous at any speed.symptoms are the ding ding ding warning and the very brief flash, like they don't want you to see it, of power steering on the radio display.that lasts maybe 1.5 seconds before it goes away, so you have to know to look at the radio very quickly when the ding ding ding goes to see the "error" message.it took 2 trips to the dealer on the recall to "resolve" the problem in gm's eyes.what they do is replace the column, and some settings in the computer that reduces the amount of force the motor exerts against the driver.the wheel no longer completely jerks from your hands, but it still will change your course when on a turn if you don't have a tight grip on the wheel.i consider this such a safety issue, that i rarely allow anyone but myself to drive it because it would just scare the bejeavious out of them for the car to take the wheel from their hands.was back in the dealership yesterday on the extended campaign of 150k miles or 10 years.they indicated the fault was that the motor tossed an overheat code and that was causing computer input issues out of what was expected.i advised it does it even when the car is cold, not driving for more than a mile.their response was the motor has an internal fault that causes it to overheat quickly, just by starting the car.repairs costs are well over $700 parts and labor, and reading on the internet, this problem may not even be resolved by such a costly repair.

I understand that my car has not been included in the recent recall; however, my car presents the exact same symptoms as those cars involved with the recall.due to this, my car remains parked in my garage for over one year.i drive it, on average, once per month, if that; because i fear that i may be involved in an accident and/or obtain a serious, life threatening injury.for the past nearly two years, my car randomly shuts down.i lose complete power over my steering.the steering locks up, and my warning chime sounds.everything shuts down: radio, gauges, etc. This has happened several times on the freeway, at high speeds, merging into traffic.i have almost gotten into an accident several times.i have ended up on street curbs and highway medians. Unfortunately, the dealership i took it to be fixed (lafontaine buick gmc in ann arbor, mi) states that the issue is due to the steering motor, which is not covered under the current recall.to fix this, it would cost nearly $800.i have contacted gm customer service and was told that nothing could be done to assist in this issue.

06 chevy malibu power steering problem.when i go to accelerate when getting on the road, a power steering message show across the radio dial, a warning beep sounds, then the steering is extremely difficult.my teenage daughter says it feels as if the steer wheel locks on her, unable to turn.i do not feel safe driving the vehicle, the warranty is out.i understand the cobalts have a recall against them for the same problem.why not the malibu's?check the internet for complaints, there are hundred, may be even thousands.the only recalls is for stickers and two other issues, which will not cause someone to have a wreck possibly injuring persons.please help with this situation. Thank you

2006 chevy malibu maxx. Power steering lock up on turns, pulling away at a light, going straight steeringmoves intermittently to the left or right and becomes hard to control. The power steering indicator does not alwaysshow on message center, sometimes it only dings repeatedly. And you can hear a ticking noise from the dash. When it stops workingthe steering also will go in the opposite direction you are driving.

Clunking in the steering column of my 06 chevy malibu maxx lt. Persistent issue is worsening.

I started the car and thought it had stalled because the power steering had failed. I restarted the car and found it was the power steering. The car sat for about 4 hours and when restarted the power steering had returned. While driving down the road it failed again and almost caused an accident. It has not been repaired yet.

Electric power steering goes out intermittently while my vehicle is moving.

My vehicle locks up when i press the gas pedal. It happens under low speeds in street traffic, especially when having to accelerate at turns, as well as highway speeds when accelerating to get onto onramps. It happens if i accelerate quickly and the power steering locks up and i loose control of the vehicle. The dash board entirely lights up, makes a chime sound and blinks. It then will resume normal operation once i release the gas pedal. I have contacted chevrolet and they have said that my vehicle isn't part of the recall 14772 but it is exactly happening as described.

The power steering stops working thus making an unsafe situation. Chevy notified me in june saying that the replacement part is not yet available. It has been over a month and i have to drive this unsafe car.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving approximately 20 mph a steering warning light illuminated on the instrument panel and the vehicle became very difficult to steer.he coasted the vehicle onto the emergency lane and was able restart it.the vehicle started and the steering warning light shut off. The contact drove the vehicle to the dealer several times. Twice the dealer replaced the intermit shaft, and another then the steering torque sensor. The contact stated that it was very easy to turn the steering wheel to the right but difficult when turning it to the left. The contact stated that the failure occurred intermittently.he took the vehicle back to the dealer who stated that the steering column needed to be replaced for $580. The approximate failure mileage was 19,000 and the current mileage was 62,000.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx lt. The contact stated shortly after purchasing the vehicle, she noticed that the power steering warning light continued to illuminate. The vehicle was taken to a local repair facility where it was diagnosed that the power steering column was defective. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the power steering column was replaced and reset. Five minutes after leaving the dealer, the power steering light illuminated again. The dealer attempted to reset the codes five times to no avail. The dealer stated that the vehicle was safe to drive. The contact stated that the power steering would lock while driving at various speeds of 3 to 65 mph. The vehicle was not repaired and the failure persisted. The failure mileage was 74,000 and the current mileage was 76,000.

In week leading up to the problem, steering was soft when turning the wheel to the left, and tight when turning to the right.a short time later, while driving, the power steering warning light came on and the on board display listed issue as power steering.the dealership has replaced the power steering motor 3 times and today, it has gone out again.i love the car, but i am tired of taking time out to take it to the dealership.

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the power steering warning light would illuminate intermittently. Within moments, the power steering would fail. The dealer replaced the power steering column however, the failure persisted. The current and failure mileages were 107,000.updated 05/24/10 the consumer stated he has almost several accidents due to the failure of the power steering. The consumer stated on one occasion, he hit a block of wood in the road and blew a tire, due to the power steering failure. Updated 05/28/10

I had an uncontrollable immediate right hand turn at a very high speed that was not initated by me. I had pressed the accelerator pedal to pass another car when the steering wheel did an extremely hard right hand turn taht took the car off of the regular roadway and onto the outer edge of the shoulder. When i released the accelerator pedal the wheel snapped back to the left and my vehicle was now sideways on a major freeway at 60 mph! i was lucky in that no accident/incident with anyone else occured. I turned this vehicle into my local dealership for repairs immediately that same day. They found the problem and corrected it. The vehicle, 2005 malibu maxx has electronic steering. The dealership said that a electronic part was putting out too much voltage and that is what caused the problem. I have since that time had other steering related prob lems that have been corrected by the same dealership. The dealership has been very helpfull with the corrections to this vehicle. My concern is that someone else that may not be able to handle a situation like this would lose complete control should it happen to them. I'm a defensive driver and usually keep both hands on the wheel. If i hadn't of had both hands on the wheel i probably would have rolled the car or at the least spun out into other traffic. I was lucky!

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving 50 mph, the vehicles chime and power steering light illuminated on the dashboard.the steering wheel locked when the accelerator pedal was engaged and unlocked when releasing the pedal. The electronic steering motor was being repaired by the dealer when the complaint was filed. The failure mileage was 28,000 and the current mileage is 86,000. Updated 10/01/2010. *ljupdated 10/04/10

The electric power steering on my 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx (51,500 miles at occurrence)went out suddenly as my daughter was pulling out of a parking lot onto a busy highway. There was no warning and the car was extremely difficult to steer. She was able to pull into a home depot parking lot and call me. She could have easily been in an accident and i am really concerned what might have happened if she had been taking a curve at a higher speed or had been in heavier traffic. Would you please investigate as i am finding that there have been similar incidents occur with the electric steering with this car?

The contact owns a 2006 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the power steering would fail intermittently and would become extremely difficult to maneuver. The power steering warning light was illuminated during each failure. The dealer advised that the failure was caused by the electronic power assist module, which could be replaced at the contact's expense. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage was 104,000.

I was making a turn a turn that i have done for four years of my life and the vehicle steering failed. Instead of turning the vehicle went straight into a wall.

Tie rod end failure.

2006 chevy malibu maxx - 2 problems1. Metal to metal noise as steering wheel is turned2. Vibrating noise around dashboard all the time.

I bought the car in 2013 from a chevy dealership in fredericktown mo. They gave me a passed inspection and i went on my way. The next april the car did not pass inspection. It was advised to me that the lower control arm of the passenger side was bad. It was over $400 to fix that. For the past year my car has been riding very rough. It shakes and rattles when driving and slowing down. At first i thought it was the rotors, so i changed those. The rotors were really bad and looked like they had been on the car since it first came off the assembly line. I was told these had been bad for several years. One side was warped and the other side looked like it had been intentionally ground down on the edges. On january 9th 2015 my tire blew out on the highway. I was told it was because my lower control arm had caused the tire to wear on the inside. Not two weeks later, i lost a second tire due to the same issue. These were brand new tires on the date i purchased the tire in 2013. I have also already had several recalls on this car. This car is not at all safe to drive on the highway. I would like reimbursement for replacing the lower control arm for the second time on this car in two years.

Driving from school saw a car ahead person had turn signal on to go left. Took foot off gas went to brake and turn wheel could not do either. The car was totaled.

On my vehicle we have developed a problem where the check engine light and anti-lock break lock come on and then on dic it displays eng pwr reduced and then vehicle then loses powerin all times, it happens when i am driving the vehicle.the speed has varied from 60 mph to 35 mph..once on a state 2 lane and the other times on township roads.fortunately for me, never on an interstate at a high rate of speed.when this happens, the car loses power almost completely and i have to find a place to get it off the road immediately.usually after turning the car off, waiting a few minutes and then restarting, it seems to be ok, except for the check engine light still on.the check engine light goes off and i am usually ok for a week or so until it happens again.

2006 chevrolet malibu.consumer writes in regards to body control module connection system recall notice and customer reimbursement requests form issues.

Proably not important, but. Chevy malibu maxx. Bought used.60,000(ish) miles 'cracked' windshield, 62,000(ish) miles. Glass tech reports windshield had already been replaced once.2 broken windshields in 62,000(ish) miles???????i am not complaining about glass tech/co.likely coincidence, but, in case....

2006 chevy malibu maxx - 2 problems1. Metal to metal noise as steering wheel is turned2. Vibrating noise around dashboard all the time.

I brought our 2006 malibu maxx in for a 5000 mile tire balance and rotation.. I was informed that i had two more bent rims on the car.. This after replacing two already several years back.. I was informed by the tire tech that this is an ongoingproblem with chevy rims and that they are seeing this soft rim problem on a regular basis..this can get expensive quick and i would like to know if and when a recall will be initiated? soft rims can cause complete tire failure and blowouts without warning and at highway speeds can be catastrophic...

Thank you.
