"service air bag" warning message on radio console:2 chimes, and text:"service air bag"problem occurs approx. 50% of time.usually occurs a few minutes after starting and driving and also usually occurs only once per drive cycle.

Takata recall i was driving on route 19 just before the maple fork exit the light was red and i began to slow down. All of a sudden the brakes and steering would not work and the car hit the rear end of the car in front of me. Causing major damages to the front of my car. The other car was not affected nearly as much. It was like the car just stopped. No airbags was deployed.

Complete and total lock up of power steering; battery light flicks on and then everything locks up until you replace the gas peddle for about 3 seconds. My lights randomly flash and rear bulbs on the driver side blow every 3 days. My turn signals will sporadically blink and the wiper blades go off with out warning or being prompted. Even with no keys near or in the car it will not turn over to start the car until you floor the gas peddle and hold it there for 3-5 seconds. My radio reads at -19* all the time and the cd player has never worked correctly. When going from 0 to 50 getting on the parkway (highway) the whole car locks up and loses power including the steering radio and lights unless you completely release the gas then start to go again. Im so highly frustrated and chevy refuses to fix it even though these are all recalled problems but my vin doesn't fall in there "bracket".

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that while driving approximately 30 mph, the air bag warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel until the engine was turned off. The failure occurred whenever driving or upon starting the ignition. The vehicle was taken to a dealer who diagnose that both the service quail and driver's side air bag needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 13,849.

My son wrecked his car and it rolled multiple times and none of the air bags went off he was driving and his car struck a guardrail and continued in motion and rolled multiple times he was cut from the car.

Ignition staying stuck alowing starter to continue to turn, day time no break lights , night time break lights stay lit up or flash on and off , fuel gauge drops to empty even when full bounces back and forth empty full , service air bag and check engine lights keep coming on even after they have been reset, cruise control will not engage , hard time to take car out of park even with brake depressed, lower gears on transmission will not engage into 3,2,1 speed, driver seat bracket broke in weld causing seat to be unstable, faulty ignition switch and more this car has less than 150 k on it 148 and some change,,, air bag service light keeps coming on as well as check engine light, this car will not pass any state inspection , and even states with out inspection would advise thatthe car be recalled

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving 35 mph, the air bag warning light illuminated intermittently. The contact also stated that both turn signals failed to function. The failures recurred numerous times. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 98,000.

This problem has been persistent since i bought the car.the air bag light just came on at random and then went off after being reset.after a while, i took it to a local mechanic and they said the clock spring was broke.how?i do not know.i have just dealt with it since all of the electronics have been working. Another almost 500 dollar repair to a car that's value is not worth trading in at this point.it has been a great and reliable car otherwise.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

I was involved in a head on collision on september 14, 2006. I was traveling west bound on laketon rd. There was a car coming eastbound in my lane. I thought he was going to turn onto the street i was turning, but by the time i figured out he was coming at me, it was too late to get in another lane or get away from being hit. My air bags did not deploy. Since the crash, i've been having back pain.

I have had numerous problems with the starter turning over even when the car starts and sometimes it still wont start. The dealer says it normal and after it gets miles on it then it will stop... It now has 52,000 miles on it and still does it. I also have had to have it in the shop every couple of months to have it lubed in the front axle which i have talked to other mechanics and they stated that it should not be needing it ever few months, if i don't do it then everytime i turn left or right there is this horrible popping sound from the front end. I also am having wiring trouble with the car, the front blinker wont work no matter how many light bulbs i put in it, it wont work and even keeps melting the plastic on the bulb itself.

When starting the car it would hesitate before turning over. Later it began to struggle to turn over. Now its struggling to turn over but won't. I purchased a new battery at firestone less than a month ago and the car has plenty of gas. I also took the car into firestone for a vehicle inspection the day before i bought the battery. If the cause is a defective fuel pump, the pump may seize stopping the fuel flow to the engine creating a stalling condition. A vehicle crash could occur should the engine stall while in use. Many chevy malibu owners found that the alarm or anti-theft system had the fuel system locked and the car would not start. This happens randomly and at the most inconvenient times. The owner's manual said to turn the ignition key to the on position leave it on for 10 minutes, then turn it off for 5 seconds and then it started up. I have not tried this yet but i will in the morning.

While accelerating onto an expressway the warning chime sounded, a click was heard under the instrument panel, and the (electric) power steering assist quit. Also a battery symbol illuminated momentarily on the instrument panel. Reducing acceleration caused the power steering assist to return to normal. Upon further testing it was determined that this happens repeatedly at any speed when under heavy acceleration (often at about 4000 rpm) and while hill climbing under load at about 2100 rpm. It was noted that simultaneously the battery voltage went excessively high (16v, sometimes 17v) and occasionally multiple (all?) instrument panel warning lights illuminate. If the power steering assist quits while turning the steering wheel tends to jerk hard towards going straight, a decided safety issue. This may be the same issue detailed in the june 2010 technical service bulletin: tsb # 08-02-32-005a and it appears to not be covered under warranty.

I have owned my 2005 malibu maxx for just over a year and have had to replace the front turn signal sockets, both driver and passenger sides, three times now due to melted sockets and amber covers melting down to the bulbs. Even though they are vented they do not stay cool enough to prevent severe electrical damage to the components. In replacing these components i have to wait a week until the parts are shipped out and am forced to drive with faulty equipment. I am unable to just replace the bulbs and have to constantly change the bulbs out before they melt to the sockets. This is a huge hazard as they can go out on me in the middle of driving in rush hour traffic putting me at a greater risk of injury. Please force gm to issue an actual recall on this issue and not just skate free on the service bulletin that has been issued.thank you,

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that immediately after starting, the vehicle stalled. The contact also stated that the key became stuck causing him to be unable to start the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 124,728.

2005 mailbu maxx. Consumer states intermittent problems with brake lights *tgwthe consumer stated the brake lights would illuminate when the brake wasn't applied and would not illuminate when the brake was applied. The dealer replaced the brake lamp, but the problem continued.

Turn signals burning so hot they explode, and melt not only housing for bulb, but also the socket in order to replace bulb is melted too.there needs to be a recall on this as i have found over 200 other complaints of people having the same issue!

I purchased a 2005 malibu maxxfrom an used car dealer and the very next day the car lost the ability to accelerate and the traction control light turned on my instrument cluster. While the car was coming to a stop i noticed that it lost all power and the engine stopped running. The car would turn over but not start.

Regarding gm recall #13036 - micro corrosion on bcm terminals and relearn -dealership claimed that recall was performed. Issues with brake lights and cruise control remain after recall service. Upon vehicle inspection, found there was not an application of dielectric grease on c2 terminal ports as described in the process of the recall. I was able to apply the grease myself but, i am unable to perform the relearn process without the gm tech2 tool. Attached pictures of c2 connector port with and without dielectric grease. We went back to dealership to try and get the recall performed properly and the tech at service desk stated that the recall was serviced properly. My complaint is that the recall was not performed by the dealership. Address: 1820 capital blvd, raleigh, nc 27604.

Replaced a steering rod at 34000 & 73000 & 105,000 that was made of metal ln 05. Gm went back to plastic the next year as this did not hold up. Second is the remote start problem. I had it repaired two different times at gm and does not work as of now. Was told it was a bcm problem each time.as it wasan expensive fix temporary that is.as many other people have the same problem with this car!

Electrical issues with my 05 malibu maxx.the power steering keeps going out-chevy is aware of this problem. The engine has trouble starting. The rear wiper goes by itself without anyone touching the control-most recent event, happens every few days 1 or 2 times. I have had issues with the starting from the beginning of ownership. The power steering issue has been over the past month. Sometimes the warning light comes on first, usually not. I have not paid to have any work done, but have contacted chevy's customer service and was told, that they would make a record of it. Restarting the car usually fixes the power steering temporarily. I have to change the brakes once a month, so they don't destroy my rotors. Power steering seems to go out more often when it is hot outside.

A 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx ls. 156964 mileage. The steering wheel emitted a clucking and a creaking noise while making a turn. A clapping repeated noise somewhere in the wheels has appeared also. Blinkers burned out too often and the plastics that cover them are melt down. If it stays more than 10 minutes stopped after driving a while, the temperature gauge start rising to the overheat point, but if you turn on the air conditioning it comes back to the medium reading measurement gauge.

Passenger front turn signal bulb and elctrical unit melted. Turn signalon dash blinking fast.changed to new bulb, thought bulb was bad, replaced.worked for a few months and it occurred bulb had blown out.replaced again.. This time it hag gone out and everythings melted.. Contacted gm, have a incident number.stated they'll speak with dealer service department to see if theyll cover a portion of repair.

Upon acceleration power steering stops working and power steering warning message shows. Gm dealer service center advised that it is the ignition coil. Replaced with a newer version of the ignition coil and added a ground strap based on the detected error codes and a service bulletin from gm. Updated 10/9/15 *lnupdated 11/13/2017

I purchased this vehicle used and have had an electrical problem with the passenger headlights.going on and off.i have replaced the wire harness 7 times in 2 years.is their a recall on these cars for the headlight issues.if so i need to be notified asap before their is a fire in my car.i am a handicap mother that needs her car.

2005 malibu maxx, starter assembly: sometimes difficult to start, especially after running the air conditioner.problem started about 3 years ago, occurred since then about 40 to 50 times.i retired 18 months ago and do not drive as much now than i di while working. The problem persists despite new battery and not running concurrently the following:air conditioner disk player, windshield wipers, lights. All the systems always checked out ok, no problem was detected.

While the car is in motion and even in idle the steering wheel sometimes will lock. It has happened while making turns, going around roundabouts, on the highway, and on a regular 15 min. Work commute. The car will beep as if the trunk is open. The beeping is right before the stiffness of the steering wheel. I have to turn off the ignition and turn the ignition back on in order to proceed in driving. If you're in motion it's best to pull over due to the engine sometimes lag when trying to start the car back up. Once it is starting,it drives just fine.i've seen tons of people with this exact problem in regards to this particular vehicle. It could cause accidents if our steering wheel locks and we're unable to just pull over to safety. Since our car is mostly electrical it's not as if we could just check the steering fluid. This happens at least once a day.

I purchased my chevy malibu maxx january of just last year and i had to replace my front left head light thinking nothing of just normal maintenance and this was right around august of last year and it is now march of 2013 and i just had to do it again but this go round it seemed more like a short because it stopped working one night driving home from work which i drive a very busy highway at night and that next morning it was working just fine so me being the normal american person i think nothing of it but the following day it goes out fully and when i went to go change the light this time i noticed it had actually burned through the amber color cover of the bulb and also burned the socket up in the vehicle. But now get this about the same time last year my aux fuse began to blow over and over not thinking anything about it but now after reading all of these different situations i kinda wonder if the two situations could have anything to do with one another.

2005 chevrolet malibu maxx (1) front park/turn/drl lamp inoperative and overheating problems.(2) rear stop/turn/tail lamp inoperative problems.this car currently has 41,000 miles.the lamps for the left front (driver side)has been replaced 5 times and right front 3 times.the rear lamps has been replaced 3 times each side.my major concern and cause for this complaint is the overheating of the front lamps (item #1 above). The upper side amber plastic housing for the lamps on both right and left has melted through at this time.when the problem was first detected, the amber housing showed some discoloration, bubbled plastic.this suggested the overheating problem either has intensified and/or the plastic has degradated over time.visual inspection showed the charred/burnt through areas are adjacent to the lamp socket.this indicates extreme socket temperature and also the rising hot air affect the ceiling of the amber housing.all the burnt out light bulbs showed various degrees of charring/melting/deformation on the plastic base.this could have been caused by the extreme high temperature and electrical arcing.the rear is not as severe as the front but nevertheless, slight arcing can still be observed on the base of the burnt out bulbs.the left front lamp was serviced by a local chevrolet dealer once on dec. 16 2009 under technical service bulletin 06-08-42-004.dealer deemed only the bulb needs to be replaced but not the socket.prior to this, the problem already existed and both front and back bulbs replaced.the frequency of the bulb replacement and signs of arcing triggered this visit to the dealer.this repair by the dealer has not fixed the problem.signs of overheating as evidenced by the melting plastic showed the problem has worsened.fearing the extreme high temp can cause fire,i visited the dealer yesterday for repair under good will repair was denied.they simply said the car was out of warranty and this is not a fire hazard.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. When the steering wheel was turned to the left and when starting the vehicle, an abnormal noise emerged from the steering wheel. The dealer was notified of the failure and indicated that it was due to a safety feature. In addition, the brake lights remained illuminated when the brakes had not been applied. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control). The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was not available.

My cars headlights are dim at night and take a while to get brighter even though i have had the bulb replaced and the lighting components checked out. The windows won't roll down from any side of the car, a recurrence from two years ago. Also my doors won't unlock from the auto-unlock button that sits on the drivers side, this has been an issue for the past 2 years of my chevrolet car ownership.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the key only turned in the ignition switch when turning and lifting at the same time. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 25,000. Updated 3/3/15updated 03/17/15

Complete and total lock up of power steering; battery light flicks on and then everything locks up until you replace the gas peddle for about 3 seconds. The steering has a heavy clunk sound when turning left in reverse, no sound when going to the right. Then at just over 50k miles, the steering on the vehicle started having issues with power while turning to the right under power, to the left was just fine.the head lamps also have gotten severely cloudy which limits visibility during night time driving.front turn indicator lights also had a problem with loose sockets, causing the lights to short out and eventually fail because of sparking residue on the contacts.also, for some reason the rear window wiper randomly turns on for no apparent reason.the vehicle also has a starting problem where at times, the vehicle will crank and not start.looking around, quite a few folks have that problem as well, where some people have had to short out the hood safety switch to make the car work... Now that is crazy to have to short out something to start your car.apparently though, the electrical system is severely sensitive to voltage issues in general, more so then most vehicles on the road.

Takata recall i was driving on route 19 just before the maple fork exit the light was red and i began to slow down. All of a sudden the brakes and steering would not work and the car hit the rear end of the car in front of me. Causing major damages to the front of my car. Took car to the chevrolet dealership, for nhtsa id: 14v252000/gm safety recall: 13036, to correct the issues in the body control module which impacted the brake apply sensor. Now rear top brake lights no longer illuminate when the brake pedal is being pushed. Front low-beam headlights goes on and off while driving. Replaced both low-beam lights on 12/6/2014. Front low beam headlights still goes off and on intermittently. Also upon visual inspection, the turn signal blinkers have melted the yellow plastic inside the headlight. Brought back to the same chevrolet dealership on 1/2/2015, for vehicle recall nhtsa id: 14v224000/gm safety recall 14152 to have the shift cable assembly and mounting bracket installed. I notified the dealership that i was having issues with the electrical system tied to the exterior lighting system. They could not provide me the reason for the fault.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxi.the contact stated that the turn signals over heated, which caused the sockets to melt.the dealer and manufacturer denied any assistance with repairs to the vehicle.the failure was not remedied.the failure mileage 65,000 and the current mileage was 140,000. The vin was unavailable.

Brake lights come on by themselves and go out when pedal is pushed. Tried new switch, calibration, and tsb procedure. Problem will go away for a month or two then return. Has been happening for the last 2 years. Numerous complaints on the web. I have seen other cars drive by with the same problem. May work fine in the morning then act up in the evening. Also impacts the sift interlock and cruise control. The other day the cruise control would not disengage when i applied the brakes. I had to turn it off by the switch on the steering wheel.

The drivers side turn signal (inside the harness in the headlight) keeps melting the plastic snap in base of the turn signal light bulb and causes it to become inoperative.almost causing other vehicles to crash in to me at 4 way stop signs.the harness assembly gets very hot.may one day cause a fire.i have replaced light bulbs 4 times in the last month.will have to get serviced.

Turn signal & 4-way flasher operation, complete failure, intermittent.hot, cold, key/engine/headlamps on/off.drl remains functional.

Ignition tends to stick and causes the solenoid to grind w/flywheel.i just received a copy of a service bulletin from g.m. Stating they are aware of a problem.however, at this time the engineers will continue to wok on a solution.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start and the anti-theft warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer and dealer were not contacted. The failure mileage was 165,000.

My 2005 malibu maxx lt has had a recurring problem besides the "electric power steering failure" which has so far not failed again (did twice once when brand new, and again at about 20,000 km.vehicle has only 45,000 km on it now!we live in winnipeg where winter temperatures often are below freezing from mid november to mid april.today it is -25 c with windchill of -44 c.every winter we have the same problem.....the ignition keywill not come out of its slot...try wiggling it and at the same time wiggling the shift lever in park....sometimes it works sometimes not.the gmdealer (vickars community chevrolet) where we go for service has tried to fix it twice, but it always recurs when it is very cold.we have had to remove the "remote door unlock and leave the key in the ignition at times. This is not a good thing in the canadian city with the highest car theft rate! we think it has something to do with the anti-theft pass lock system.by the way all cars in manitoba must have an approved anti-theft system to be insured or registered. The manitoba public insurance corp. Does approve the factory system on the malibu maxx. It is just too finicky andinconvenient.but at least we were not forced to put in a "third party" fob which many people have found causes all kinds of other problems especially with "command start" systems (malibu has a factory command start.) wonder if others have similar problem??

My vehicle is a 2005 chevy malibu maxx.the vehicle doesn't always turn over.i have had my vehicle in the shop a couple of times to determine the problem and the chevy dealer can't figure it out.i will try to start my vehicle but it doesn't always crank over.it will chug a lot and then stall out.other times it will chug and act like it will stall and then turn over.sometimes it takes 2-3 times for me to try and get the vehicle to start.i called my service department at the chevy dealer every time it happened and the only common factor was that it was happening every 800-1000 miles approximately.it didn't matter how cold or hot it was, wet or dry.it has been awful!nothing has been replaced on the vehicle to try and fix the problem with it starting.my can has just over 32500 miles and is still under warranty.the most recent time was late september 2006. I am not sure on the exact date that i called my car dealer.i also took my vehicle in on 9-12-06 for a popping sound in the steering when turning.we found out that the center steering shaft was broke.it was replaced.there was a problem with the interior front blinker not working but the exterior did.then shortly after the left front blinker blew.

I just purchased a 2005 chevy malibu maxx ls and im having intermittent starting problems. It appears to happen more when i've been driving with the air conditioner on and i stop the vehicle. The car will crank for a long period of time like its going to start but will not start initially. After a while it does start and then appears to be normal. I've checked the starter, alternator, and the battery all checks out good.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated the headlight wiring harness melted causing the light bulb plastic covering to melt and the light bulb to fail. A local mechanicreplaced the passenger headlight assembly, but the driver headlight also failed. The drivers headlight assembly was not replaced. The failure mileage was 86,000 and the current mileage was 92,000. Updated 10/14/11 updated 10/28/11

Upon starting the car, the instrument panel was completely down except for the low fuel warning light however the car had a full tank.power would return to the instrument panel intermittently when the turn signal was engaged.the fault cleared after shutting the vehicle off for a few minutes.

I purchased a 2005 malibu maxxfrom an used car dealer and the very next day the car lost the ability to accelerate and the traction control light turned on my instrument cluster. While the car was coming to a stop i noticed that it lost all power and the engine stopped running. The car would turn over but not start.

Loud "clunking" sound in steering column and loss of power assisted steering while driving.i have taken the vehicle for repair 5 times.steering column has been replaced and electric steering gear.still get a loud "clunk" when steering as well as loss of power assist.car pulls to the right and i have to constantly steer left to stay straight.dealership claims the steering is aligned and that they can no longer work on the vehicle, except to grease the steering column.

I was driving and a warning signal sound came on and the "power steering" message appears on the screen then the power steering went out. I was on on on the highway so that was the scary part. I started to go home because i knew it was not safe. The car would shake and make noises while i was stopped at a stoplight and the steering wheel would jerk and move and continue to rattle. I was able to pull over and turned the car off. I started it back up and it was okay. I started to drive and again the signal sound and the power steering message came on and it went out while i was turning which was a scary moment because an accident would've happened had another car been in the way.it was very difficult to drive and i was worried about an accident happening.i was told to take it to the shop and did so. Was told it was probably a sensor. I looked up recalls and that was a recall on my car. I called the gm/chevy consumer line and they recommended it take it to my local chevy dealer and stated the recall had been fixed. Local chevy dealer calls to tell me that there is a "bulletin" and the steering column needs to be replaced at a cost of $1,100. The steering column is listed on the previous recall but they only replaced a sensor.i was told i had to pay to have it fixed. I find it very disturbing that millions of cars have this issue and nothing is being put out to fix the problem. It is dangerous.

I took my car in on 9/3/15 for a recall on power steering torque sensor assembly, a brake component, and gear shift cable. My car had the issue of loosing power steering prior to me bringing it in on one occasion. After getting my car serviced at chuck hutton chevy in memphis, tn for the recalls only one week later my car began making whining, grinding noises every time i turned the wheel. I first thought the car needed power steering fluid, however i was advised that since my car had an eps i couldn't put power steering fluid in the vehicle. I decided to take the car back to chuck hutton because i was not told when they did the repairs that anything else was wrong with my car. I assumed perhaps a mistake was made and a bolt was not put on properly.when i took the car back i was told that the car needed a power steering rack, new tires, and wheel alignment. My tires on my car are barely 6 months old and you can now see the thread and prior to taking my car to get the recalls done on it i had my car fully serviced in august. I feel that my car was tampered with. The servicing agent told me my car was leaking power steering fluid and the ps rack was badly worn down. But my car has an electric pump and their is no fluid to leak as the supervisor told me when i came to him to resolve my concerns. Yes, i tried to resolve the issue with the supervisor but was brushed off and told my car was old. As baldly as my car sounds i feel that if it was really wear and tear they would have seen it when they looked at my car the first time and notified me. I wasn't notified leaving me to believe my car was tampered with so that i would have to bring it back for expensive repairs. If not then what needs to be fixed could have caused an accident and killed me or my children because they didn't notify me there was a problem when i took it to them. Either they are negligent or crooked.

The car is a wreck.

When accelerating to for example mars onto the interstate, the steering locks up and post left while it all warning lights flash in the system chimes three times. After letting off the gas and the steering comes back in the vehicle is once again control. But until then it will pull you directly into oncoming traffic

Takata recall : i was driving to school and as i exit the freeway, my car steering wheel became stiff and my car was still running forward. I almost a vehicle with children in it, but lucky they were able to swerve off the road and miss me. I finally was able to make a complete stop in the middle of the road while having multiple cars at a complete stop, blowing their horns at me. I was very scared, even morewhen this angry mother, who i almost ran into, started yelling at me. I then realize i could have killed those people, myself and in any other situation on a daily basis, my sons life as well. After that happened moments later, my car became manageable to drive to school and the problem has persist more than i would like and now i have found there was a recall with the exact problem back in 2011. I went to my dealership and they fix other recalls but not that one. They stated that there was a recall for that problem back in 2011 and that i was too late to get that recall fix. At this point i don't know what to do since i have yet to find a mechanic that would want to touch that problem since there was a recall done on it and to fix it, it would cost a lot and they can't guarantee me that the problem will be fix. They have advice me to go to the chevy company since the dealer ship couldn't help me and it's a company malfunction.

Car is less than two weeks old and under 400 miles on the odometer.constant stalling and eventually difficult to start.car had to be towed to the dealership.dealer service dept has determined that the mass airflow sensor is defective and needs to be replaced. Awaiting delivery of replacement part.

The car will shut down without warning.i have experienced this when accelerating, braking, and when driving down the road with neither acceleration or braking.i have researched this on line and it seems like a lot of people are experiencing this with no known resolution to the problem.every incident where i see it reported, the individual has not had a fix.the first incident was 3 weeks ago, then last night, and again this morning.if this were to happen in the middle of an intersection people would get hurt.personally i plan to buy a new car because i do not feel that chevrolet dealership will provide a fix.

We own a 2005 malibumax, recently the right front turn signal bulb died so i replaced it in accordance with the owners manual.when i opened the lighting unit to remove the bulb i found the bulb had melted the amber plastic enclosure that surrounds the bulb.i thought this was odd however i thought maybe the bulb has shorted out and burned since the glass was shattered.i than checked the right front turn signal which was functioning,i found that the bulb had melted the amber enclosure as well.this seems like a defective design that could cause a fire.

Turn signal on my 2005 chevy malibu maxx. Just like several other complaint on this site i have had to replace bulbs monthly if not weekly. I have discoleration on the right front light housing from heat and sometimes smell the smell of something electric burning always coming from the recently burned out bulb. Dealer will do nothing because car is no longer covered under the warranty.

Turn signals burning so hot they explode, and melt not only housing for bulb, but also the socket in order to replace bulb is melted too.there needs to be a recall on this as i have found over 200 other complaints of people having the same issue!

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx.the contact noticed that the parking light had blown out.she also found that the front parking lights were melted due to the light bulbs.the bulb was replaced with a sylvania bulb.the front passenger side light had a large hole in the orange area of the fixture.the entire front lighting assembly needed to be replaced at the cost of over $100.the failure and current mileages were less than 60,000.the original bulb melted the orange cover inside the headlight assembly for the parking lights. Hot plastic dripped on the bulb and burned a hole in the bulb. Updated 06/22/09.

Both the front turn signal amber bulb housing keeps melting to the bulb and also the light sockets , oem and after market ones.

Amber lens on turn signals and daytime running lights has melted and burned down onto bulb. This has happened to both right and left turn signals.

Driver side day time running light/turn signal bulb socket causes bulb base to melt and cause a shortage. In one year bulb has had to be replaced 4 times. Bulb manufacturer sent me heavy duty replacement bulbs to help solve the problem they suggest that gm is aware of. Two heavy duty bulbs have also gone bad with most recent melting the base within two days. Problem is no day time running light or turn signal. Passenger side bulb was replaced once, likely under normal wear.

I purchased this vehicle yesterday and upon inspection last night i realized that the orange plastic dome that fits over the lamp for the passenger side blinker is unattached, when my father looked further into it he became aware that the wires are melted and so is the part of the orange piece that attaches, upon further research it seems that this is a problem that many owners of this model have encountered, is there a recall or something on this to have it replaced?

Turn signals stopped working for several weeks than began working again. I'm replacing turn signal bulbs every year. The bulb works infrequently.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx.the contact stated that the turn signals failed intermittently.neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified of the failure.the contact replaced the bulbs however, the failure continued to recur.the current mileage was 138,000 and the failure mileage was 108,000.

Left front signal light keeps burning out.has been replaced 5 times in 6 months. Bulbs last only 2 weeks at most.had signal light socket replaced and problems still happened within two weeks.light bulbs turn black.took car back again today.still waiting to hear what they say this time.last repair 8/28/09 - 92.89 for the light socket, $1.50 bulb, $70.00 labor.no longer have parts.afraid i will get in accident - since left signal light and running light do not work.keep having to go back for new bulbs, and in for repairs again today 9/23/09.

Had to replace tail lamps after car was 1 year old and 10,000 miles on it.

2005 chevy malibu headlight over heating. Consumer states that the front cover of the daytime running lights and turn signals melt. When the cover drips onto the light bulb it puts a hole in the bulb.the consumer stated the plastic coverings were discolored above the bulb due to extreme heat which was an obvious defective design and /or improper bulb. Not only did the headlights fail, but the right front park and signal light had to be replaced as well.

The contact owns a 2005 malibu maxx. While operating the vehicle, the passenger and driver side turn signals malfunctioned and would not illuminate. The vehicle was taken to lewis chevrolet of garden city (1903 us 50 bus e., garden city , ks) where it was diagnosed that the headlight bulb sockets had melted and damaged the bulbs. The dealer stated that the bulbs could not be screwed out of the light bulb sockets and the entire headlight bulb assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact indicated that the failure occurred to both the driver and passenger side assemblies on multiple occasions. The manufacturer was not notified. The vin was not available.

The drivers side turn signal (inside the harness in the headlight) keeps melting the plastic snap in base of the turn signal light bulb and causes it to become inoperative. Almost causing other vehicles to crash in to me at 4 way stop signs. The harness assembly gets very hot. May one day cause a fire. I have replaced light bulbs 4 times in the last month. Will have to get serviced.this is becoming a real safety issue in the midwest because i have to stick my hand out when it -30 to use as a signal.the dealer charges $267 for replacement. 3 time so far and i am not sure what is next. I believe gm should own to this problem and fix as a recall.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the front running lights were overheating and melting the plastic covers. The failure first started on the passenger side but progressed to both lights. The vehicle was not inspected or repaired. The contact stated the amber cover on the driver side was melting and looked as if it was starting to melt on the passenger side as well. The failure mileage was 70,000 and the current mileage was 73,000.updated 02/15/12the consumer stated initially, he noticed the front signal lights were burning out at an alarming rate. Eventually, smoke began emitting from the plastic cover, followed by melting of the light and cover. A mechanic informed the consumer, that the bulbs or sockets were perhaps loose. After the bulb housing melted, both headlight assemblies were replaced. To date, the bulbs continue to function, with no burn outs. However, the lights seemed to bounce while driving. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000. 2005 chevy malibu maxx front turn signals burned out, but before that, they burned/melted the plastic globe around the bulb.have replaced bulbs numerous times before, and replaced bulb socket (melted and shorted) this time around too.this melting and shorting is certainly a mfr. Defect and should be replaced or fixed by chevrolet.currently i'm trying to find a way to run led bulbs to avoid the heat, but can't find an economical way due to the need for resistors (creating heat) or new flashers in the line in addition to the new bulbs.

The front and rear turn signal bulbs continually burn out. They get so hot that both front orange bulb covers have holes burnt in them and the socket has discolored because of the heat. This began shortly after i purchased the car in 2005 but did not notice the holes until recently.

Shortagein turn signals.

The driver side headlight orange glass in side of head lamp it has a hole melted the top of the orange lens. Has a hole on top what can you do to fix that problem, it's seams to be only on the driver side of the car. It's on a 2005 malibu maxx. Can you replace it under a factory warranty for us thanks.that's has to be a defective part on them cars please let me know what you can do for me thanks again.

My 2005 malibu maxx indicated that a turn signal bulb was out and when i went to replace the bulb i noticed, not only that the bulb itself was significantly burned at the socket, but also that the blinker plastic was substantially melted. I checked the other side of the car and even though that bulb is still functioning, the plastic blinker housing is starting to melt on that side as well. Clearly the bulbs are burning way to hot to be melting the plastic housing and i would assume since the bulb itself was burned that this is a larger issue of both potential fire risk and now water damage since the blinker housing is compromised.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the yellow plastic cover for the headlights was found burned on both the driver and passenger sides. The turn signals keep burning out.i took it back to the dealers but was told that my warranty had run out.so i am stuck buying lights almost every week.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx.the front passenger side turn signal bulb failed.one week later, the front driver's side turn signal bulb also failed.he took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the failure caused the light housing assembly to melt.the estimated cost for repair was $1,000.the current and failure mileages were 78,000.

I have a 05 malibu maxx my turn signal have melted i see many complaints is this a recall?

You can smell fuel when you are by the car. At this time it takes 2 to 3 cranks for the car to start. I'm told that there is a leak on the top of the fuel tank somewhere.

I own a 2005 malibu maxx and after one year old it began making clunking noises in the front. I took it to the dealership and they said they had to replace a part of the steering shaft. They did what they did and the noise was gone. They also replaced struts. A few months later it did it again. This time they replaced tie rod ends. By this time my warranty had expired. Then 2 months later it did it again! they lubed something and now it has been 8 months and it has not returned yet. Now my engine light is on and i keep getting a message to check my gas cap. I check it and nothing is wrong.

A fuel smell/odor began permeating the vehicle and the immediate area around it.the next day, vehicle began requiring two cranks to get started.after troubleshooting, it was determined that there was a fuel leak, and it was coming from the fuel pump.the part was replaced, and the fuel pump had a cracked plastic portion which the mechanic said he had never seen happen before.this kind of thing must have been the result of a defect within the formation of that plastic portion of the fuel pump.

Fuel pump leak. Noticed strong gas smell that only increased as time passed, driving and parked. Fuel pump needs to be replaced. Have noticed this is a common problem in this vehicle. Seriously needs to be investigated.

Noticed a fuel smell coming from back of 2005 mailbu maxx, nothing leaking for 3 days, then noticed fuel on the ground, was having issue starting (fuel line not pressurized) turning the car on and off a couple of times before cranking worked to pressurize the line.at the shop now, they said it a non-repairable fuel line coming off of the pump, going to have to replace the entire sending unit and it is going to cost me out the wahzoo to repair, how is there no recall on this?i spoke with gm recall line and was told there is no recall associated with the vin of my car.

Around june 2012 i started smelling fuel when i parked the car in the garage. I thought i may have over filled. The problem persisted and i took the car into a chevrolet dealership for repair. The plastic line from the fuel pump had cracked causing the leak of fuel. I checked for a recall and found there was one but the maxx was not on the list. I do believe this recall included a pontiac with the same fuel pump. Since i have a safety issue due to the arizona heat in phoenix the maxx should be included due to the mileage and the year.thanks

Issue one is the drivers seal welds brake on the rear and front from the floor mount base to the elevated control thus in the case of a crash the seat is compromised to separate completely from the floor mount due to these welds being broke. Second issue fuel pumps begin to leak at the seal of the pump at the fuel tank leaking heavy amounts of fuel from the tank and onto the exhaust. Third issue which i have seen multiple reports of recalls but the dealership denies there is an issue with the maxx that only the base model is effected but while driving the power steering will fail and the car has no control and will violently jerk in one direction throwing the vehicle in to oncoming lanes or even into the ditch. Happens periodically the power steering message appears on main control message screen and car will sound an alarm, other times the entire dash board warning lights from check engine, oil, air bag, seat belt, so on so all come on and the power steering goes out. I have found that this issue usually occurs while accelerating whether slowly or even while trying to speed up more aggressively to merge unto expressway traffic. I have nearly wrecked into numerous cars due to steering going out and wheel will violently jerk one direction or to the other. Not sure why this site shows a recall for power steering but dealership denies there is a active recall for the maxx but they have one for the 2005 base malibu

There is a crack/leak in the fuel sending unit.this is the second one to be replaced on this car.the first was about a year after purchase (2006) and the newest problem was diagnosed around the first of this year (2014).i took it to a couple of mechanics and the entire unit will have to be replaced.the unit is around 500 plus labor and totals about 1000 dollars.this is on the short list of problems i have had with this car, even though it has been well maintained and taken care of.i have not had any major issues as others have, but this particular one concerns me quite a bit.

I started to smell gas after parking my car in garage about one month ago. Changed fuel cap, didn't work. The gas smell became more and more strong after few weeks. Did some search and found it's a common problem of fuel pump leak in 2004-2006 chevy malibu maxx. The high pressure line breaks and the owners have to replace the fuel pump completely, which costs more than $600. There was a recall of fuel pump but not for the original one. Gm/chevy should recall the faulty fuel pump, it's very dangerous since it's easy to catch fire and very bad for the environment!!!

Fuel leak from the sending unit above the fuel tank.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx.while driving 60 mph, the contact's five and seven year old children opened the rear door.the contact stated that his vehicle has no child safety locks on the rear doors.he also stated that the door locks are too long.the dealer and manufacturer were notified and stated that nothing could be done.the vin was unknown.the current mileage was 36,000 and failure mileage was 2,000.

The parking brake on my 2005 chevy malibu maxx won't fully release and as evidenced has caused extreme heat in the rear disc brakes. This has rendered the parking brake unusable and there is no adjustment to facilitate full parking brake release as told to me by a chevrolet dealer. I must now park my car with no parking brake set.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact received notification of nhtsa campaign number: 14v224000 (power train) however, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.

We just got out of church and was stopping at a gas station to get some gas. Put the vehicle in park and it went into reverse and stayed in reverse. No matter how we tried to get the gear shift out of reverse, it would move up and down but would not come out of reverse. This is very dangerous in my opinion and i am sure we are not the only ones this has happened to recently. Right now the vehicle is in our drive way and it's difficult to even find a tow company that will move a car stuck in reverse. The vehicle was driving perfect prior to this incident. Don't get stuck on the free way in reverse!!

I have had to replace the transmission already on this car, and it still is not right.the power steering will be gone no matter the temperature, but then comes right back.the brakes are always going bad on it, i have replaced them several times within the 25k miles of owning the car.the driver seat leans to the left and did not know this was not normal until after reading reports of it being a problem in this car.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the rear seatbelt would not release. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where they unharnessed the seatbelt. The contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. The current mileage was approximately 31,500. The failure mileage was 31,470.

The driver seat, rear right side is broken. Driver leans toward center console. Potential safety concern if there were to be an accident. Seems as if there was a structural failure in that location. Driver did not notice it break until sitting down one day to start daily commute.

Driving away from work in a parking lot and the front right seat of the driver seat popped and sagged about 3 inches down, shoving the seat sideways.i pulled over to check it and found that a pipe running the front of the seat had sheered away on the right hand side. Driving it home, another pop in the back of the seat happened and now the seat is shoved into the center console.

I was adjusting the driver side seat when i heard a metallic pop.seat had a slight tilt to right that became worse when seat was raised up. Slight rocking motion was noticed when shifting body weight. Visual inspection found that right front weld had failed.

When entering my parked 2005 malibu maxx, the cross bar under the front right side of the seat snapped at the corner weld. From reading these posts from other consumers, this has been happening since the car was manufactured. Not sure how many people can afford $1000 to buy another defective seat frame before they make a stronger one, but this seems like it should be added to the list of recalls i already have for this vehicle. ( which parts are not available as of yet )this is definitely a safety concern.

Drivers seat welding has snapped underneath causing the seat to lean to the right and bounce up and down.

This 2005 malibu maxx lt is equipped with a 6-way power driver's front seat. Something has broken that allows the seat to slide forward slightly during braking and slide back during acceleration. I have read the various owner's complaints regarding broken malibu seat frames and i feel that this manufacturing defect should be repaired or replaced by chevrolet. This vehicle has only 56,000 miles and is driven by my wife who weighs only 122 pounds. It has been a garage kept car all its life and is exceptionally clean. There is no reason for this seat to have failed other than poor construction. As with many complaints, this is a safety issue! this seat has not been fixed yet.

I noticed the drivers side seat "swayed" to the inside of the vehicle when sitting down in the vehicle.after removing the seat for inspection, the weld connecting the support tube inside the seat completely separated from its weld joint.no previous accidents occurred with this vehicle.local service center stated this weld would be difficult to fix by rewelding and suggested finding a autosalvage seat to replace it.

The power to the driver seat of our '05 malibu maxx, is maulfunctioning/broken/not working correctly. It appears that the right side of the frame has given up. The power to the seat goes up but the right side stays down; leaving the driverleaning to the right. We contacted the dealer, who claims that he's heard about this before, but as far as we know, there is no recall for this malfunction.

Driver power seat/ broken weld on metal stabilizer bar across the lower front of the seat. Causes the seat to be unstable and shift when braking or accellerating.

2005 malibu maxx hydraulic seat malfunctioned and the back seat unlocked.***nar***the drivers seat would not stay in the upright position. Due to the misalignment of the seat, the consumer experienced recurring right knee joint pain and inflammation, which required emergency medial care and ultimately surgery.the consumer believed the malfunction of the seat is what caused her knee injury.the intermediate steering shaft was replaced.

Power driver's seat suddenly tilted back and right, and i heard a loud pop. Upon inspection a bar that runs under the seat broke at a weld.seat now feels insecure and bouncy.

2005 malibu maxx, about 88,000 miles. Drivers seat frame broke underneath, causing the seat to lean to the right. Dangerous.just happened, took to repair shop and they said that entire seat would need to be replaced for over $1000.extended warranty would not cover.not sure how i'm getting it fixed yet.

Corrosion on bottom of driver seat, has allowed a crossmember to break, compromising the integrity of the seat.may be very dangerous in a crash.vehicle is not subjected to adverse/flood conditions and driver is of average weight.

My wife went to drive the car on sunday, 5/15/2011.the seat broke.the seat cross member failed.the seat now rocks back and forth.it is going to the dealer on 5/24/2011 for repair. Fortunately, it did not happen at highway speed.we have to lower the seat all the way down to get any stability. I did some research on the internet and apparently, this is a common problem with the maibu maxx

The support bracket welded to the seat frame broke on the driver side seat, causing the seat to lean towards the passenger side.the seat can not raise up on the passenger side of the driver seat.

My driverseat is loose and rocks from broken welds in the foundation/support bars.

A weld broke for a cross bar (driver seat).i request gm fix this free of charge.

Something broke under the driver seat. It now leans to the right. It rocks back and forth when you hit a bump. It causes strain on my back to drive. I have to lean all the way to the door for the seat to be utilized. I took it to a mechanic and he said the metal bracket snapped and needed to be welded together or the seat replaced. I found a list of folks with the same problem at this site: http://www.arfc.org/complaints/2005/chevrolet/malibu_maxx/seats/problem.aspx.m

Sat down in drivers seat and it popped and slumped to the right towards the center console.i looked under the seat and the metal tube frame had separated at the weld and looks like it just peeled back.the seat is now unstable and will wobble back and forth during driving.researched this on the internet and it appears that there is an epidemic of driver seat frames breaking in the same manor on this year malibu maxx.with so many vehicles experiencing the same malfunction in the frame it would appear that a manufacturing defect exists with this seat.the manufacture should be required to investigate and repair the defect as a safety issue.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the driver seat frame was fractured and leaning to the right. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who informed her that repairs to the seat would estimate $800 at the contacts expense. There were no recalls for the failure. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 77,000.

Drivers seat weld broke right side. Now i have a very uncomfortable drive and don't trust the safety of my vehicle since my seat rocks back and forth at every turn and stop.

At approx 76,000 miles the power drivers seat started to lean to the right. A weld broke loose from the seat frame underneath. The repair requires seat replacement for over $1000. The vehicle is out of warranty.i don't understand since it clearly is a manufacturer defect.its unfair.

2005 malibu maxx, 84,000 miles. Power driver's seat frame is broken, causing the seat to lean to the right.dangerous, and uncomfortable to drive.

Left front (driver's seat) is broken, it rocks side to side, slides fore and aft slightly, and no longer holds height position. The seat is a 6 way power seat. Vehicle is currently at the local dealership (puyallup, wa) waiting for a new seat track to be installed.estimated repair cost is $800.00.dealers stated that the seat track was broken in several places (failed weld points). I feel that this is a major manufacturer's safety defect and should be a recall item.

The driver seat welds have broken making the seat unsafe.

Front driver seat weld broke, seat leans to right and wobbles.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contactstated that the driver side seat wells were fractured and causing the seat to abnormally lean to the right. The vehicle was inspected by the dealer who confirmed that the wells had fractured from the track assembly. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was 75,500 and the current mileage was 75,600.

Two welds holding the console side of the driver's seat to the body of the car snapped, causing the seat to sit crooked (lower on the inside), pivot backward during acceleration, and forward when breaking. If it were ever in a collision, the additional stress placed on the door side welds will likely result in the entire seat coming free. (even in the absence of a collision, the seat may come free based on the stress of constant pivoting during normal use.)for the record, to my knowledge the car has never been involved in any collisions or other situation that might have placed abnormal stress on these welds.

The weld on the front torsion tube of the driver seat adjuster is detached and the tube is disconnected, allowing more than 200mm of fore/aft movement of the upper seat back and headrest if seat is in full up position. This will clearly not pass fmvss 207 or 210. There are already dozens of complaints nearly identical to this one on the nhtsa site. This should be a recall. I do not know when this initially occurred.

Sat down in drivers seat and it popped and slumped to the right towards the center console. I looked under the seat and the metal tube frame had separated at the weld and looks like it just peeled back. The seat is now unstable and will wobble back and forth during driving. Researched this on the internet and it appears that there is an epidemic of driver seat frames breaking in the same manor on this year malibu maxx. With so many vehicles experiencing the same malfunction in the frame it would appear that a manufacturing defect exists with this seat. The manufacture should be required to investigate and repair the defect as a safety issue.

The connecting foundation for the power drivers seat broke loose at the weld point. The drivers seat is not properly grounded to the vehicle and it moves up and down while i am driving. I wrote the manufacturer but they declined my request to provide financial assistance for the repair.

While driving on the freeway, luckily on a curve.the driver seat began to wobble and lean to the right and back and i thought the motor came out of alignment.when i got home i began to search to locate the issue.after further investigation i noticed that the front bar of the seat had broken off.i have taken pictures of the defect.the issue and concern i have at this time is safety, how can a seatbelt secure me if the seat is not attached to the car during an accident.if i were in a stand still on a freeway and the car behind me did not stop in time and hit me at 45 mph, what would the result be?i picture my seat finally snapping off of its frame and me and the seat flying through the windshield.

Frame under the drivers power seat is broken in multiple places.it has broken on weld points and the bar itself is broken.this leads to a rocking motion of the seat when driving.

Drivers seat broke in three places and is a hazard to drive , because the seat moves left to right when you get in and out of the car.when the seat moves before driving, you sit tilted to the left and its uncomfortable to sit and drive good. It happened so sudden i was afraid to drive anywhere, if i did i only drove slow.

The driver's power seat is broken. It's been slowly starting to tilt back and to the right and finally snapped. In researching this issue, it appears it is very common with the chevy malibu and also very expensive. This is a huge safety concern as a broken drivers seat will not work as intended in a crash. The seat tilts to the right now and bounces when going over bumps, so being a safety concern it's also very uncomfortable. I think this should be recall situation for the malibu seat and the dealer should not be profiting off a design flaw.

While driving my 2005 chevy malibu, i made a turn and the drivers seat broke on the right rear.the welds broke off the frame rail causing me to swerve in to the side of the road.the car needs a new seat rail to repair the car.the cost is about $800, gm will not assist in the repair of a defective seat weld.

Driver's seat is wobbling and feels like something is broken or detached beneath the right side of the seat. I've read many complaints about this in a chevy malibu/maxx. Should be a recall. Mechanics on the phone assume it's a welding issue. The wobbling occurred over time. Shouldn't have to pay for a manufacturing defect.

The drivers side power seat started to sag on the right front side. In addition, when the power seat adjustment is used, the right front of the seat does not raise which makes the seat lean. Finally, the seat now rocks forward and backward. It appears that the frame of the seat has broken.

The brakes are not releasing after normal pressure is applied to them, which is causing smoke and burning fumes to escape from the front of the car and from both the left and right side tires (very dangerous). The brakes become locked or stuck with the pressure not releasing for a few hours or until the next day. Even the driver side seat belt will lock as if the brakes have been slammed, but were not. All of this is happening while driving around town.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact mentioned that the brake fluid low warning lamp illuminated and the brake lights remained on although the brakes were not engaged. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in recall nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, and service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 72,000 and the current mileage was 73,900.

The car is a wreck.

Brakes failed.i am concerned with 3 recalls on major parts:ignition, power steering and brakes.i had to pay for abrake repair out of pocket because the car was totally unsafe to drive.i should get a refund.i have 3 recall letters and i am told the parts are unavailable.this is not safe.i need my car to drive 30 miles across town to work.

The contact owned a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving downhill at approximately 35 mph with the brake pedal depressed, the abs was activated and the steering wheel suddenly became very difficult to turn. The driver was unable to control the steering and the brakes would not stop the vehicle. The contact lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. The vehicle was destroyed. No injuries were reported and no police report was filed. The cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vin provided was incorrect. The failure mileage was 140,000.

I was driving on the interstate on my way home and my back breaks locked up and the tires and hubcaps started to burn. I had no immediate exit so i had to continue to roll slow. Once i exited the interstate my wheel was on fire. I put it out with an extinguisher. I asked the dealer and they said no recalls. I had to get the tow truck and he said it was not the first for my car make and model. I replaced the breaks, rotors and tires and 2 weeks later the same thing happened again. Only this time i was in a parking lot of a grocery store. Since then i have had a total break job and replace tires and hubcaps. My power steering locked up and it was very hard but was able to use manually. The manual said to shut off car and restart to reset the power steering. This was not safe and very scary.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx.the contact received a notification for recall nhtsa campaign number: 14v252000 (electrical system, electronic stability control, exterior lighting, service brakes, hydraulic, vehicle speed control). However, the part to do the repair was unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure.

Subject: nhtsa item number 10032206 brake lights comments: my 2005 malibu maxx has intermittent problems with brake lights. They go on without putting on the brakes and go off when i put on the brakes. In addition, the cruise control works intermittently.i found a tsb dated 2009-06-01 that describes it perfectly. Chevy can't find the same tsb in their system and won't help me. The dealer replaced the brake lamp, but that is clearly not the problem (based on the tsb). The dealer can't see the problem because it's intermittent. I want this fixed (the car is dangerous to drive) but don't want to have to pay again, when i first paid for something that was clearly the wrong solution, and for which the dealer could have found the same tsb that i found (even if it's not in the gm system). The solution appears to be "high resistance to terminal fretting corrosion in the body control module (bcm) c2 connector (specifically pins c2-18, c2-31, and c2-59).the correction is to unlatch the c2 connector and disconnect from the bcm.then repeat this and then apply dielectric lubricant on the bcm c2 pins.it is not a brake switch problem.please contact me and let me know what options i have, and if nhtsa can deal with gm about this. Thank you.*ln

When the car was new, it shook when the brakes were applied.the car was taken to the dealer and they corrected the problem by smoothing the brake pads.a few months ago, the car began to shake when the brakes were applied at speeds above 35 mph.this problem has gradually become worse and the car now shakes excessively when the brakes are applied at speeds at or above 55 mph, making driving in anything but a straight line impossible.stopping distance has also substantially increased.i no longer consider the car safe for use at speeds above 55 mph.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx.for approximately two months, the contact heard a hissing noise each time the brake pedal was depressed.on a separate ocassion, while driving less than 65 mph, the brakes failed.the contact applied the emergency brake in order to slow down the vehicle and reach a complete stop.the vehicle was inspected by an independent mechanic, who stated that the antilock braking system pump failed.the failure mileage was 112,000 and current mileage was 126,239.

While driving 68 mph and had applied the brakes, the steering wheel was hard to control; veered to the right and vehicle rolled over into a ditch.rental vehicle from enterprise contract #113732

Front suspension is clunky as if there are loose-fittedparts. Front brakes pulsate at freeway speeds causing steering difficulty in corners.

After the first 200 miles on the odometer, the car had front rotor problems. The dealer tried to fix it 2 times by turning the rotors, only to return in less than 2,000 miles each time. They finally changed out the rotors for brand new ones after i complained to the dealer owner and management about the problem. The second issue was loss of power steering while on the highway, making it impossible to turn. This was caused by a faulty electrical connection at the fuse box, which i took it upon myself to repair and the problem never returned.the third problem started in january 2007, just one and a half years of owning the car. Steering assembly noises identical to all previous reports was corrected by a rack and pinion assembly replacement. In july 2007 (just 6 months later) it was changed again. Now in october (3 months later) it is scheduled to return to the dealer for yet another replacement, making this the 4th rack and pinion assembly to date (including the original). This is completely unacceptable for a vehicle of this price range... And the only solution to date is to continue to change out the assembly.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx.when the contact applied the brakes at 65 mph, the entire vehicle began to shake.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the rear rotors were rusted and needed to be replaced.the vehicle was serviced for the failure several different times, but it still persists.there were no warnings prior to the failure.the current mileage was 47,000 and failure mileage was 5,500. 2005 chevy malibu mass master brake cylinder was defective and caused the brakes to wear very quickly.*mwalso, the power steering failed. The consumer no longer owns the vehicle, as it was totaled in an accident.

Driver of a 2005 chevy malibu maxx suddenly lost all electric power steering assistance without warning making the vehicle difficult to steer.the defect is intermittent and is sometimes accompanied by a warning chime but without any malfunction indicator on the instrument panel.

Power assisted steering failed.steering became hard so i pulled off the interstate at the nearest exit, stopped vehicle and turned it off. After the vehicle sat for a while i restarted it and it worked fine.

When accelerating to for example mars onto the interstate, the steering locks up and post left while it all warning lights flash in the system chimes three times. After letting off the gas and the steering comes back in the vehicle is once again control. But until then it will pull you directly into oncoming traffic

I have a problem with my power steering in my 2005 chevy malibu that has been diagnosed as a known defect with the power steering column. I called and spoke with a nhtsa representative today and he said it was a known defect on many chevy models where the cobalt was recalled but my 2005 malibu has not been recalled. I am scared to death to drive this vehicle. I've read online about accidents happening as a result of this problem as a result of power steering loss. Please can you resolve this problem with chevrolet so they issue a recall. I drive my kids in my car and i am afraid to drive it.updated ivoq 08/31/10

Alert system dings three times, power steering issue indicator comes on, power steering is completely out while driving.contacted chevrolet and was told there was no recall on my specific vehicle, although there were two recalls for the same exact issue.was told there was nothing they could do to repair this common problem with this style.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx . When driving low speeds ranging from 0 to 10mph there is a clunking noise in the steering wheel column. When he made a left and right turn or drove in reverse the noise was present. The manufacturer informed him to take the vehicle to the dealer to diagnosis the failure and perform a possible repair. An appointment was scheduled for the end of december 2008. The failure mileage was 43,000.

2005 malibu maxx power steering reading came up 2x on radio.took to be checked and cost to $700 to replace the unit.vehicle only has 53,000 miles.this unit should not be going out this soon!

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the manufacturer indicated that an unknown eps recall remedy was performed by an unknown dealer before the contact owned the vehicle. The contact stated that the steering wheel made an abnormal noise and was extremely difficult to turn in either direction. The vehicle was not diagnosed by a dealer, but was inspected by an independent mechanic. The manufacturer provided no solution other than stating that a recall had been performed. The failure mileage was not available.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that while driving 65 mph, the power steering assist failed. The contact continued to drive the vehicle without power steering assist. The following day the power steering operated as designed. The steering failure recurred numerous times intermittently. The vehicle was taken to a dealer for diagnosis and the contact was informed that a sensor in the steering column had become worn unevenly and was sending sporadic signals, causing the failure. The contact was informed that the entire steering column would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was unavailable. The failure and current mileage was 160,000.updated 04/30/13*ljthe consumer provided a vin. However, it was a ford vin, not a chevrolet vin.

2005 malibu maxx have a "power steering motor (electrical)" versus a power steering pump. The vehicle losses power steering due to electrical issues (3500 rpm see tbs 08-02-32-005) my vehicle had this happen dealership said it was due to time/mileage failure of steering column sensor.....i had to pay $1200.00 for new column and motor for what i believe is a safety and design flaw.

Unexpected loss of power steering during acceleration - dangerous situation. Dealer corrected problem using technical service bulletin #08-02-32-005a. The service bulletin required adding a ground strap and replacing the ignition module. Sounds like a design issue (lack of required ground strap) corrected in a service bulletin. In my opinion it should be covered under an extended warranty to correct a design defect.

Loud popping noise coming from the steering column, and can be felt in the steering wheel.slight "play" in the steering on the left side. The noise seems to be poppingwithin the "play" area of the steering.purchased this vehicle from private owner with low miles, garage kept, and regular maintenance.previous owner noticed a noise near the steering at 30000 miles.

Power steering goes out while driving with no warning. Different times.

Power steering gave out.

I have a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx.we had experienced loss of power steering at 87017 miles.dealer replaced power steering column under policy 10183. Car has again had the same problem now at 101754 miles. Policy 10183 states that gm will pay for repairs but only up to 100,000 miles. I'm 1754 miles over this. However it was repaired before only 14,737 miles ago. Is gm repairing this defect with the same defective components? if so this endangers everyone and is unethical.this car has had numerous front end issues including replacing the steering rack several times (clunking noise when turning - now also back again), wheel hub and bearing issues and steering column replaced at 50425 miles for a failed torque sensor. We are concerned that the vehicle may not be safe to drive. Gm should be re-engineering these components and replacing the failed ones with new design. This needs to be a recall for all impacted models before someone is killed or injured due to loss of power steering which can be very sudden and dramatic. Gm claims it is not a safety issue. However, someone unprepared or without upper body strength can get into serious trouble very quickly.who will make the decision to do the right thing with this problem? apparently this is well documented with other gm products as well.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. While reversing out of the driveway, the steering wheel seized and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed the vehicle and produced failure code: 8-2902753243 (power steering sensor). The remedy repairs were unknown. The local dealer stated that the warranty expired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was opened. The failure mileage was 196,696.

While driving the car, it gives out a couple of dings but no light ever or anything to let me know that the power steering the issue it just goes out. This occur on the express way in chicago where there is little room for error. I felt that my life was in danger and i hate to say it but i was really scared. *ln

I own a 2005 malibu maxx ls. I was attempting to leave work and put my car in reverse. A message popped up that said power steering. My steering wheel would not move in either direction. I was stranded at work, forty miles from home. Later that evening i went attempt to retrieve my car and it was fine. No message, no issue. I have had this message pop up briefly before, but disappears after a block or two. I took it to a shop and they informed me that it is most likely a loose wire. The problem is, no codes are found and i would be spending money to attempt a repair without really knowing what the problem is. I am a single mom. I do not have money lying around to hopefully fix a problem they are not sure of. I don't understand why this issue has been resolved by gm.

Power steering failure on my 2005 malibu maxx.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the power steering failed and the steering wheel seized while driving at various speeds. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, but the contact was unaware of the type of repairs that were necessary. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 83,000.

When i was driving on the highway, i heard a chime and a message popped up and stated 'power steering' my steering wheel locked up and made it hard to turn. I was still able to drive to my destination. I was also able to turn my car off and it'll reset and the power steering message would go away and it'll be easier to use my steering wheel

I purchased a used chevy 2005 malibu maxx from east hills chevrolet.i had problems with the steering in 08' they replaced or repaired the steering gears.5 years later and 30,000 miles (local) i have the same problem that was sited in a bulletin with my vin number however, gm, nor the dealer will repair it for me.the cost $1,100.00 of which i do not have at the present moment.what do i do drive a potentially dangerous car???i am getting no help from gm and am prepared to take my car back and sell it and buy anything but a chevy as the whole line is plagued with this problem.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

While driving vehicle the electronic assisted steering stopped working. The second time this has happened in less than 12,000 miles and 8 months. This time mechanic advised it was the steering box not the column so it was not covered by warranty (surprise). I was advised the labor and part would cost nearly $598 ($597 and change).

Lost of power steering, varies speeds. No control of car.

Electronic assisted steering stopped working while driving. Mechanic advised it was sensor but they had to replace the entire column. Cost was 571.99.

The 2005 chevy malibu maxx is well known for having power steering problems. The power steering goes out when you accelerate quickly. It also has an audible chime when this occurs. This is a serious safety issue that gm is well aware of and should be a recall warranty item. The power steering also goes out occasionally when moving slowly. This vehicle has numerous issues, including steering, rotors and struts (steering gear). I have already had to have the struts and rotors replaced at my own expense. It seems unfair and unconscionable to sell a product line with such a serious defect and then expect the customer to pay for the repair. When a few deaths occur perhaps gm will step up the plate and put our bailout money to good use ' buy fixing the defective vehicles they have sold to their loyal customers. I am reporting a recent date, but this power steering failure occurs quite often.

What are you going to make gm do concerning 2005 malibu maxx steering system.power assist pumps failing, steering shafts, etc.minestarted the clunking noise and getting progressively worse and of course it's out of warranty, which is what gm desires.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx.the contact was driving approximately 45 mph downhill when the brakes were applied and the steering wheel collapsed.the contact was able to pull the steering column back up but had to hold it upward while driving. The failure persisted. Later, the contact purchased a repair kit directly from the manufacturer at a local auto repair shop. After the repair kit was installed, the contact stated that the failure did recur but not as often as before the kit was installed. The dealer was contacted and advised there were no recalls for the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 60,000.

My power steering randomly goes out on my car. I have to pull over and restart my car to reset the power steering. Sometimes it last 10 minutes, sometimes it lasts 1 month. Why don't they recall this part with all the problems owners are having with power steering on this make and model?

2005 chevy malibu mass master brake cylinder was defective and caused the brakes to wear very quickly.*mwalso, the power steering failed. The consumer no longer owns the vehicle, as it was totaled in an accident.

My 2005 malibu maxx's power steering has continued to worsen lately.i has been coming and going, and at times it has been rather hard to steer at lower speeds for my wife.it has also rattled ridiculously when braking.this is not related to the braking system, but is in the steering section of the car.

While driving down the highway the power steering failed and i was stuck in everyone's way. Tried to steer to the shoulder but i wasn't strong enough. After the car was turned off for awhile i started it up and the steering came back on just long enough to make it home. Chevy says they don't have part numbers but other privately owned shops in my area say they can get the parts and fix it.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the eps warning indicator randomly flashed and the steering wheel loosely swayed left and right each time the failure occurred. The vehicle was not diagnosed by a dealer or an independent mechanic. The manufacturer stated that the vehicle was excluded from the manufacturer recall for the power steering. The failure mileage was not available.

This has happened on multiple occasions. Most of the time its when we are pulling into a parking space and turning left. At first we thought it was a fluke..now it is happening more and i am getting very nervous about driving our car, scared that it is going to happen while we are driving on the road. When the power steering goes out the car is almost impossible to turn the wheel, and the beeping alarm goes off and it says power steering on the dash board. We have to come to a complete stop turn off the car wait a few moments and then turn the car back on. I am very scared what if this happens in the middle of a turn? please take notice of this problem!

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact was driving 2 mph in a parking lot when the power steering seized. The vehicle was turned off and then on for a couple seconds before the system reset itself.the steering warning light was illuminated also. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 173,000.

Accelerating quickly, making a left turn across traffic, the steering locked up and a warning ding dinged 3 times and then multiple lights flashed on the dash.releasing the gas pedal released the lock.this is happening more and more frequently now.every time there is a warning ding, sometimes there are lights on the dash, sometimes there aren't.very scary and dangerous especially when merging into traffic.

Under warranty my 2005 malibu maxx developed a clunking noise that you also feel in the steering. Mostly turning left. Going forward or reverse. The dealership replaced the steering gear and it fixed the problem. Not a sound turning left ,right or whatever. I was very satisfied but 10 months and 12,500 miles later guess what ! it's baaack ! include me in the list !

My steering wheel is hard to turn at startup, like it is manual or metal on metal feel like there is no lubrication.it is surely not safe to even back out of the driveway let alone drive it.i looked to see if there was no steering fluid but learned there is no such thing on this make/model but that it uses electrical steering assist instead.i have seen many complaints on the web regarding steering assist on this model and i know my local dealer told me there was a recall and had worked on the steering and replaced something there at some point because of the recall yet my vin search show nothing on this site.it doesn't even show past recall work!

2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. Consumers stated that they tried to get car fix due to steering recall, but couldn't because the dealer wanted to charge them for labor. *tathe dealer stated there would be a charge of $393.00 to replace a connecting shaft, between the steering column and the rack and pinion.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving approximately 25 mph, the service engine indicator illuminated and the steering locked for few seconds. The vehicle was driven home. The contact also stated that the failure occurred one other time. The vehicle was not diagnosed by the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 139,000.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that while operating the vehicle, a clunking sound was coming from the steering column while turning the steering wheel in either direction. The cause of the failure was not determined. The contact indicated that the steering column was previously replaced however, the failure persisted. The local dealer john elway chevrolet located at 5200 s. Broadway, englewood, co 80113 and the manufacturer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 45,000.*dt

I was driving on the highway at speeds between 60 and 65mph when my power steering stopped working.there was an alert reading "power steering" but no service engine lights came on.i steered the car off the highway with much effort and turned it off.i looked at my owner's manual and decided that i would try to turn the car on again and see what would happen.the steering was restored and the problem did not return on my drive home.for the time that the power steering was not working it was extremely difficult to steer and i was worried about being able to control it.i had my three year old daughter in the back and i am now worried about that happening again.

My wife was slowing down to enter a rest stop in her 2005 chevy malibu maxx when there was a ding and power steering was displayed on the driver information center. At the same time, she noticed she had lost power steering. She was able to stop the vehicle safely and turned it off. A few minutes later, she restarted the car. There was no longer the power steering display and the power steering had returned.a recall notice was issued on april 21 for electric power steering assist for this generation of malibu (gm recall no. N140116; nhtsa recall no. 14v153) but we still haven't gotten a letter. When i called the chevrolet customer assistance center, i was told parts are still not available. Apparently there are three other gm electric power steering recalls, with parts available for those three others but not our car. So far the problem hasn't returned, but once it happens the first time doubt gets planted. Especially because this is at least the second time there has been such a recall. We got a recall notice in late 2007 for the power steering system as well, and i'm pretty sure there was another one before this year's recall.

Had to replace right side control arm, i.e. Ball joint.other ball joint appears to be in need of replacement.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact was driving approximately 20 mph when and a sudden loss of power steering occurred, followed by the illumination of the power steering warning indicator. The contact was able to continue driving using extreme bodily force to maneuver the steering wheel. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 52,000.updated 05/18/11

On a cold (-20 c) winter morning i found i could not steer the car left more than 10 degrees.i hung from the wheel and it simply would not turn further.i drove it the short distance to my mechanic who put it in his shop to warm up.after it was warmed up the car turned just fine, but they sent it to a dealer just in case.it turned out there was a service bulletin for this problem and they replaced the steering column.i have not had this problem since.another mechanic friend told me i should not hang onto the steering wheel when entering or leaving the vehicle as damage may result to the power steering.

After allowing vehicle to warm up approximately 5 minutes, put vehicle in reverse to back out of driveway.vehicle's steering failed, was unable to turn steering wheel for duration of about one minute, then steering assist began to work again and i was able to turn the wheel.several times previously over the last six months steering has seemed very stiff on occasions, but not to the degree that steering failed.

3rd posting here. Same problem. No power steering. Now it is to the point where im lucky to get power steering for the length of my driveway. I called the local chevy dealership to inquire about the cobalt recall (which is the same issue as the malibu power steering issue) and they told me at this time there is nothing that can be done by them. I told them i had been in 2 times to a dealership and that was told the same thing. The next thing said really surprised me. Apparently there is a "super secret warranty" for this very problem. As luck would have it i was not informed of this warranty until it had expired on my car. Chevrolet handled this in true customer is always right fashion. If i want to take it in and pay for the diagnostic and repair they would possibly refund me the cost of the repair only. Needless to say, if i had the funds avail to get the work done i would have either done it already or switched to a ford. To all you peopleout there with this issue go into a dealership and ask about the "super secret warranty" then after you get it fixed, sell it!!!!!

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that the steering wheel emitted a clucking noise while making a turn. The dealer performed a diagnostic test which located the failure in the steering wheel drive shaft and column. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 76, 000 and the current mileage 78,000.

Clunk, knock or rattle noise from front of vehicle while driving or turning over bumps at low speeds. Dealer fixed clunk. The clunk came back. Dealer did not mention what parts were replaced or fixed.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the power steering light illuminated and the steering wheel locked. He had to use extreme force to turn the wheel.he turned the vehicle off and restarted the vehicle to remedy the failure. The failure occurred eight times. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer but the dealer stated that they could not duplicate the problem. The vehicle was not repaired when the complaint was filed. The first failure mileage was approximately 20,000. The current mileage was approximately 95,000.updated 5/24/10 updated 06/18/10.

2005 chevy malibu, 95000 miles. For 60000 miles have had limited if any power steering. It generally goes out right away when outside temp is above 60 degrees. Otherwise within 20 miles of driving it goes out. When it goes out i am usually going around a corner or cloverleaf. When power steering goes out steering becomes extremely difficult to turn and usually tries to go back to a forward direction. Not convenient when trying to turn. My wife it totally unable to drive the car, for it would lead to a crash. I find it hard to believe, after investigating this problem online, that chevy has not issued a recall for this problem. This is a huge accident waiting to happen. The couple of time i have taken it into a chevy dealer i was told there is no warranty on this car. The first time i took it in there was only 38,000 miles on the car. Needless to say chevy has lost a customer. This has been an ongoing problem that started around the beginning of the year 2007.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that while driving approximately 10 mph and attempting a turn, the power steering assist failed. The warning light was illuminated and the power steering warning chime sounded. The contact shut off and restarted the vehicle, but the failure was still present.the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who stated that the power steering module would need to be replaced. The manufacturer had previously issued a recall satisfaction campaign for the power steering module but the contact's vehicle was not eligible for repairs under the campaign because the cumulative mileage had exceeded 150,000. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000.

2005 malibu maxx began pulling to the right, then a couple months later the power steering notification starting beeping on the dash display, the steering is tight, sometimes hard to turn. Found out the power steering is electronic and there is no fluid to add. The car has less than 75,000 miles on it. I am fearful for my safety and others with this issue appearing to get worse, and without warning, its fine for 10 miles then starts beeping at you, etc.

Making a left turn onto busy road. Steering went out and had to go straight till i could get to a safe spot to stop. Car made chime noise and indicated power steering failure. Had to turn off the car and waited about five minutes. Started car and steering was back to normal.

Reported earlier that power steering went out after parts were replaced under a recall. New: power steering warning/chimes came on during acceleration (entering highway from ramp). Appointment with dealer (lou lariche chevrolet, plymouth, mi)on 7/10/15 (8 am est) to have recall parts checked....updated 09/22/15 updated 11/07/2017

Power steering failed 2 times in last 3 days and both times it has happened i was stopped. I had no power assist and it takesa lot of effort to move the wheel in any direction. After i did move the wheel several times i regained power steering and was able to proceed on my way. I think this problem should be upgraded to a recall asap!

While driving down the street my daughters 2005 chevy malibu's power steering stopped and she crashed into a snow bank. After leaving the car off for 10 minutes the car reset itself. I have looked on many web sites and i have seen numerous people complain about this issue and i was wondering why the malibu has not been included in the recent recall of cobalts and others for the steering issue. I have taken the car to the dealer a few times but they say there is nothing that they can do. This is a severe safety issue one that could lead to death and i believe that the malibu's should be recalled or at least some kind of study done on the internet such as i have done. I didn't even know that this web site existed until today.

At the stop lightthe steering lockedup with engine running at stop light. After police stopped to help and another passer by stopped to help the engine was turned off and then restarted to reset cpu computer and then the steering was returned on again to work free.. This car also has the starter run on when trying to start the engine , solution is to push on gas pedal when turning the key to start and let engine then to start and run. Recall parts still on order and i keep asking to get this fixed but no parts yet. What's next with this car,,, gm should buy it back. And scrap it.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. While the vehicle was stationary at a drive-thru, the steering wheel independently maneuvered left, right, back, and forth. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The contact called the dealer (chase chevrolet, located at 6441 holman rd, stockton, ca 95212, 209-475-6600) and a supervisor agreed to replace the torque sensor assembly for free. The dealer confirmed that the previous vehicle owner serviced the vehicle per nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering) in 2014. When the vehicle was taken back to the dealer it was diagnosed that the power steering motor and the power steering column needed to be replaced. In addition, the mechanic mentioned that there were no diagnostic codes found on the vehicle. The contact and the mechanic test drove the vehicle and the steering wheel vibrated. Additionally, the steering wheel independently maneuvered left, right, back and forth during the test drive. The vehicle was at the dealer for one week, but was not repaired due to the repair costs. The mechanic informed the contact that the vehicle was unsafe to drive and handed the keys back to the contact. While reversing from a parking space and turning to the left, the steering wheel veered independently to the right without warning. In addition, the contact stated that the steering wheel would independently move back and forth. As a result, the contact crashed into a pole. There were no injuries and a police report was not filed. The contact was concerned that the failure could have caused a fatal injury. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer for the most recent failure. The contact stated that the failure occurred on various occasions. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and a case was filed. The approximate failure mileage was 79,500.

I was driving my car in a school zone at about 20mph and i started to make a left turn, about midway through the turn my power steering went out on my car and it became very difficult to control. Because i was in the middle of a left turn going across traffic when this happened i drifted in to on coming traffic. I can honestly say that if i or the other drives involved had been going more then 20 mph that there would have been a head on accident. I have taken the car to a number of local shops and i have spoken with the local chevrolet dealership but noone seams to be able to pinpoint the problem. There have been no repairs on the car as of yet and i am currently not driving the car because of this problem. The problem has occurred everytime i have tried to drive the car since this has happened.

While driving on local street at approximately 35mph, the power steering on our car stopped working making steering very difficult. My husband was driving and he had trouble steering to the side of the road. He turned off the car and restarted it, and the power steering came back on. Within a 2 mile span, this occurred twice. I asked my kids and husband how often this happens, and it's every time the car is driven. If my husband had trouble steering when the power steering stops, it must be even worse for my 2 girls. If this occurs on the highway, there could easily be a serious accident. I looked online and numerous complaints have been made about this problem. There was a service bulletin for it but it needs to be a recall. I read that mazda3 and mazda 5 cars are being recalled for power steering failure. Why haven't chevy malibus been recalled? please help.

Shortly after purchasing my 2005 malibu maxx, a clunk developed in the front end when turning. The first time i took it in, they replaced the gear box. The second time i took it in they replace the rack & pinion steering. Now it has developed a third time. I will be taking it in again. After it is fixed this time i am seriously considering trading it in. I bought a new car to drive, not to spend my time taking it back to the dealer to have it fixed.

I am an owner of 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx ls vehicle. Few days ago, it suddenly lost electronic power steering! yes, this car uses electronic power steering rather than fluid power steering. It really scares me because i could not move my steering wheel at that time. I tried my best on the way to turn right into the safe ground and off the road immediately. You cannot imagine how much strength i used to change the direction on it. It must be a serious problem on this car! if i was driving on highway, there might be an accident already. After all, this car has fatal problem with its power steering wheel. Please kindly check this message and reply not only me, but also owners of malibu.

Cars power steering light will come on with failed power steering. The first time this occurred was about 3 months ago while making a turn. Had the car towed home and when i went to move car further into my driveway problem no longer existed. Problem has occurred 1 other time while driving in rush hour traffic, but after stopping vehicle and turning off engine then restarting power steering was working again.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving 30 mph, the power steering failed and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was able to be restarted and was taken to the dealer. The repairs that were made were unknown, but the failure recurred intermittently. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was unknown.

Gm recalled several vehicles for problems with the power steering and electric steering assist in 2014. According to the gm newsbrief, "if power steering assist is lost, a message displays on the driver information center and a chime sound to inform the driver. Steering control can be maintained because the vehicle will revert to manual steering, but greater driver effort would be required at low vehicle speeds, which could increase the risk of a crash."chipman & taylor, a certified gm dealer and service repair shop, has indicated that the aforementioned units are failing in my vehicle which was identified as one of the vehicles in the recall. However, they indicated that the 2005 chevy malibu maxx ls was not eligible for the full repair and only replaced a singular part which did not fix the issue that they were attempting to resolve via their recall procedure.it is both irresponsible and reprehensible that they are aware of the issue, made a statement regarding their intent to remedy the situation, and simultaneously failed to follow through with their promises to consumers. This type of negligence puts every person on the road at risk.'with these safety recalls and lifetime warranties, we are going after every car that might have this problem, and we are going to make it right. We have recalled some of these vehicles before for the same issue and offered extended warranties on others, but we did not do enough.'their failure to follow through with their promise is an atrocity of monumental proportions and should not be taken lightly. 612,203 vehicles were affected by this recall and gm has the audacity to allow citizens to be placed in grave danger due to their negligence.

I bought my car in 2006. It is a 2005 malibu maxx. The first week that i bought it i had to take it to the dealership to have repairs made on the front end. I was told the struts and cv joints needed to be replaced. Fine...it was still under manufacturer's warranty. After a few months, another sound from underneath the front end. This time i was told it was the steering column assembly. They replaced that again under warranty. Then one year later i returned due to more noises coming from the front end. This time...no warranty. I was told that there was a problem in the steering but they would cover it since it was a known problem with these cars. Also they told me a tie rod end was about to snap so they replaced it. I had to pay. Now, only a few months after that, the noise in the steering is back again. Will this ever end?????

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that while driving the power steering failed and the vehicle lunged forward when the wheel turned in the opposite direction that she was turning in.the power steering alarm also failed and the warning light began to flicker. Speed does not seem to be a factor.the dealer stated that the steering harness and coil needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 50,000. The current mileage was approximately 65,000.

Malibu maxx with 24,000 miles i started hearing a popping or clunking noise when turning steering wheel.i took it into the dealer and they told me that it was something to do with the gears in the steering column and said they fixed.a week later the same noise was back.i took the car back to the dealer and they then said that they had to order a new rack for the steering.the rack was replaced a few days later.these repairs (along with a long list of other repairs including replacing the gas take) were completed on 7/18/2006.now december 3rd 2006 i am hearing the same noise and will have to take the car back this week.i drive this car 60 miles everyday and am very concerned with the safety of this vehicle.

2005 chevrolet malibu maxx - rack and pinion assembly failure at 37,000 miles (just beyond warranty).internet search reveals several dozen similar complaints, and solutions do not last very long.

Safety issue with 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx.because of a number of problems with steering and suspension, i have had four certified mechanics inspect the car.three found that the steering rack is defective; one found that the intermediate shaft is defective.neither should be defective on a car with 57k miles.the only way that the steering rack could be defective is if there was a problem with the heat treatment during manufacture; this would imply that the entire batch is defective.similarly, the intermediate shaft is a thick piece of sheet metal that should not be defective with low mileage.the problem(s) has been reported to general motors, who have not responded to repeated contacts.because the mechanics do not agree, i will have the intermediate shaft replaced to see if that solves the problem.if not, then i will replace the steering rack.

I have posted on this site 2 times now with both about the "power steering" or lack there of. I have been battling this for 70,000 miles! i can tell you all that it will only get worse to the point of you will go days without power steering. It will go out everytime you start the car when the temperature outside is above 60 degrees and works best when it is below freezing. It will go out when your just driving down the street straight ahead or when your turning, it becomes a constant worry while driving. To say this is a safety issue is an understatement. The report i read say there have been only 14 accidents and 1 death caused by this problem, i find that hard to believe. I cannot believe that it has taken them this long to issue the recall. And it's only the cobalt? i took my car in for the problem originally in 2008 and was told there was nothing that could be done to fix it. I could go on and on but will bite my tongue now. Gm, you need to own up to this and take care of the people that pay your salaries.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving approximately 30 mph, there was a loss of power steering and the warning indicator illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact maneuvered to the side of the road, where the vehicle was shut off. After numerous attempts, the contact was able to restart the vehicle. The failure recurred and the power steering failed to regain operation. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 101,000. The vin was unavailable.

On a periodic basis, the power steering light will come on when the car is slowing to a stop. Thereafter, the power steering fails. Power steering can be restored by turning off power to the car and then restarting. There is no identifiable consistency to when this problem occurs.

I was turning onto a road while driving to work and my power steering failed.i almost drove off of the road into a tree!this is the first time this has happened.i have been told that the steering column must be replaced to fix this issue.

My electric power steering goes in and out while driving.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx.while entering a parking space, the power steering failed. As a consequence steering became difficult. The dealer and the manufacturer were contacted , but because the warranty expired they would not provide a free remedy.the failure mileage 80,600.

Stopped at stop sign and i was trying to make a right hand turn. When traffic cleared i pushed on the gas to enter onto the when my car started to make this loud ding, ding, ding sound and the steering wheel locked up. At that time i could not turn my steering wheel. Then all of a sudden the steering unlocked and i then made like a sharp right as it kicked in. Very scary. During the loud dinging sound i was looking to find the check engine light or some indicator to what was going on. I did not see it until this happened a second time about a week later and it flashed power steering. There is a tsb on this but because i am over the miles they won't help me. This is a safety issue and every vehicle should be recalled.

2005 malibu maxx power steering shuts off in the middle of turns.it will reset after i stop the car, turn it off and restart the engine.this is an intermittent problem, a dangerous one at that.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu max.the contact was driving 10 mph and attempting a right turn when the power steering warning light illuminated and the steering wheel became increasingly hard.the contact was barely able to maneuver the vehicle to avoid a crash. The manufacturer advised that because the vehicle was over 100,000 miles, they would not assist. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 123,000.

2005 malibu maxx was sent to the dealership for some warrenty service work on problems with front end noises. The car was returned 30 minutes after being dropped off. The dealer said the car had a bad steering rack and shaft. The parts were ordered and the car returned for driving until the parts were recieved. Less than 100 miles later the car lost steering control and slammed into a semi truck on a major freeway. The car is a total loss. I did an internet search and this seems to be a problem others have expecienced.

I own a 2005 chevy malibu maxx. When i was driving it to work the power steering message came on the dashboard. Shortly after that my steering wheel locked up so i couldn't freely move it like i wanted to. Mind you i was on the expressway so when it locked up i was terrified. I was told that it will reset itself but the message still comes on. Sometime my wheel locks up and sometime its too loose. Please consider about recalling this vehicle because i was fortunate with my life, maybe next time i wont have the same luxury. I know there's many other people with this problem and this vehicle should be recalled.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle pulled to the left at various speeds.the dealership replaced the rack and pinion and steering column, but the problem persisted.updated

While accelerating, warning bell dinged and power steering failed momentarily. Has happened a couple of times so far. I plan to call the dealership tomorrow.

My 2005 malibu maxx i just had to get the intermediate shaft fixed again. After about every 10,000 to 15,000 miles we have to do this. And also my power steering keeps going out and when the car is shut off it resets itself but can't steer the vehicle when it happens. This has happened at least 5 times now.

After leaving the post office, my power steering light came on as my power steering stopped functioning. I drove for about 2 blocks before i pulled over. I turned the car off, restarted it, and the light went off and my powersteering returned.

2005 chevrolet malibu maxx.consumer writes in regards to the electric power steering recall notice.the consumer stated he received an invoice stating the recall was completed. However, after leaving the dealer, he experienced a power steering failure.upon returning to the dealer for an explanation of the power steering failure, the consumer was informed it was a separate problem not related to the repair that was just performed. According to the service ticket, the technician found and checked code c0900 and then checked the alternator. It then stated he found a related tsb that said when finding a code c0900 and b1325 as well as other contributing factors it may need to have a coil replaced and ground strap added.the technician did not state he found both codes.

Just purchased this vehicle and it has power steering problems off and on saw it was recalled prior and not sure if it was properly fixed what am i supposed do?

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving at an unknown speed, the power steering warning indicator illuminated and the steering wheel seized. The contact stated that the vehicle exhibited the same symptoms as indicated in nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer was not contacted for diagnostic testing or repairs. The manufacturer stated that the failure was included in an unknown recall that was closed.the failure mileage was approximately 115,000.

Learned of a power steering service notice after the power steering failed while entering traffic.gm authorized the repair and the dealer failed to completely repair the steering or other issue that was directly related to the failed steering. The dealer did not inform me that the car was not completely repaired. The steering now alternates between too much play or partial failure when turning.i brought the car back to the dealer who stated that gm did not want to completely repair the power steering.the steering is worse since the repair. At least before i only lost it twice but when it worked it worked fine.now i partially lose steering every left hand turn and right turns alternate with a real lot of play and almost normal.driving straight the car pulls to the right.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle began to veer toward the left before the power steering failed. During the failure, the power steering warning light was illuminated. The vehicle was shut off and upon restart, the vehicle operated as normal.

My power steering turned off suddenly while i was driving - i pulled over my car and restarted it - the power steering seemed to be on and i drove less than half a mile before the power steering once again turned off. Gm has notified me there are not any parts currently to fix this problem and they will not tell me when dealerships will be provided to the parts. They also told me this is not a serious enough safety issue to warrant a rental vehicle to customers unable to drive their vehicles while this safety problem is occurring.

My 2005 malibu maxx ls loses its power steering.it does notmatter what the temperature, or what the weather is like, just out of the blue the bell goes off and power steering it runs across the dash.it will reset itself once the vehicle has been shutoff and restarted.it has happened on several occasions, however, it has become more frequent. This isn't very safe!!

Loose/clunky steering.the clunky sound and feel can be heard/felt whenever the steering wheel is moved.there is also some space between when the steering wheel is turned and when the wheels actually turn.feels unsafe to me.i'm very easy on the turns, it scares me that something is going to break when i turn.don't know if that's the case i'm not a mechanic, but it feels and sounds awful. It started months after i bought the care.i purchased it april 2006, basically a new car, but after a few months the problem started.i took it to the dealership they fixed it, but it started up again after a few months.i took it in again to the dealership they said they were installing a new improved steering gear or something like that.it lasted a little longer this time, but the problem started again.this should be a recall repair.the warranty is over so i'm not taking it in again.it isn't worth the expense - a temporary fix is not the solution.this will probably be my last chevy.it's disappointing.my cars have always been at least 6 years old when purchased.this was my newest car purchased.it was exciting, but then ended up being so disappointing.my next newer car purchase will be nissan. I miss my old nissan.

Power steering went out after having it recalled in oct 2104. Obviously the recall didn't fix the original problem. Luckily it happened while it was in park and we were not driving when it happened. The recall happened when my mileage was roughly 147,000 and now we have roughly 183,00, which was less than 40,000 miles.

My power steering is constantly going out on my car while driving on the highway as well as city streets and i have to pull over and park for a few minutes before it will work again. It is very dangerous and i've barrowly avoided an accident several times most recently it has failed 3 times in 2 hours hole driving normally. This has been going on for the past year but incidents of failure have increased since reaching 156000 miles on my car. It appears that there is a recal for this issue for my year and model and yet i've been told there is a recall but my car isn't covered

My husband and i purchased a used certified 2005 malibu maxx in july of 2006, by the time the weather got cold, i noticed a clunking noise in the front end. It was taken in to the dealership and they replaced the steering box. The second time was in march 07, they could not verify the noise, then again in april i took the car back and they replaced a front sway bar link. The noise is still there. It gets so much worse in cold weather it can be really scary on the highway, it also has a inconsistent pull to the left and has been aligned, and tires rotated to no avail. Why can't they fix this problem? i am losing my faith in gm after nearly 20 years of being a faithful gm owner.

I used my scanner tool and i got the code p0826 which is due to a problem with the shifter, the shift cable must be broken. Am i entitled to take my car to get fixed in a dealer before an accident occurs or somebody dies?

Power steering failed while turning left into traffic.the led read out said "power steering". Turned car off.searched internet and found a service bulletin for the car #07126.called gm and asked why i wasn't informed of this bulletin since i complained of similar but less intense occurrences since purchase.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx.whenever the contact turns the steering wheel in either direction, he hears a clunking noise.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the steering shaft needed to be replaced.the failure has occurred three times.the current and failure mileages were 40,050.

Power steering light continuously chimes on.there has never been loss of steering but light has been chiming on more and more frequently, almost daily.when taking it in, light didn't come on so they said there was nothing wrong.becoming more frequent every day, doesn't matter what speed i am going, comes on on highway or driving through town.

Bought our 2005 malibu maxx in november of 2006. A couple months later we had trouble with the power steering assist. Received the letter that if the problem was occurring with our vehicle to take it to the dealership, our car was and is experiencing the problem and so i took it to the dealership and explained to them that the car was doing exactly like the letter stated, so they took the vehicle and called me within the hour saying that there was nothing wrong with my car. Called gm and they said they couldn't do anything unless the car was producing a duplicate code so they couldn't fix the problem. The power assist has gone out on my numerous times and this is our only vehicle. No one will replace the part or fix the problem so i am still having the problem. It has done it so much i lost count.

Last febuary i bought this car "certified used" from a chevy dealership. Less than a week later the power steering failed while i was driving on the highway at 65 mph. Some how i managed to pull over without wrecking the car. I turned it of and back on again and it seemed fine. Then it happed again and again so we took it to the dealership. At first i really regretted buying the car but they fixed it and it seemed okay. Now a year later and after the warrenty has expired there is a clicking and thumping noise coming from the steering and i'm sure that i will have to pay plenty to get that fixed lucky for them the warrenty is gone. Meanwhile i'm without a car. I will never buy aniother car from gm again. This car was a huge mistake!

This has happened about 5 times so far.the power steering on my malibu maxx goes out without warning.the warning bell sounds and on my display it says 'power steering'.the steering gets extremely difficult when this occurs.it usually happens in the middle of a turn.i have to stop, turn the car off and restart it.iknow gm did a recall this morning on other cars but the maxx was not included and it should be.i consider this a dangerous malfunction because the steering is so difficult when the power steering shuts off.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving various speeds, the contact stated that the steering column became hard to move.the dealer advised the contact that the vehicle was no longer under warranty and offered no further assistance. The manufacturer was notified and the contact was awaiting a response.the vehicle was taken to a private mechanic who advised her to take the vehicle to a dealer. The current mileage was 130,000 and the failure mileage was 129,000.

2005 chevrolet malibu maxx.thumping noise from firewall area when turning steering wheel at low speeds.

Going down the road the power steering stopped working suddenly.pulled over , restarted car, worked fine. Found out it had a recall, took it in around 11-16-2016 .drove car that next weekend. Steering stopped again.restarted car, worked fine afterwards. Recontacted dealer , told them problem still exists, they wont fix it without charging me. Said there is nothing they can do, unless i pay them.

Over the past year my 2005 malibu maxx power steering has without warning stop working. Luckily this has happened at speed less than 30mph and i was able to slow and stop the vehicle without incidence. Recently my engine light has come on warning power steering. This could be a very dangerous situation if driven on a highway!

We own a 2005 chevy malibu maxx that we bought certified used in 2008. For the past few months the power steering stops working while the car is being driven.. It becomes very hard to steer and is very scary when it happens especially on the highway when traveling at faster speeds. Also scary when traveling on curvy roads. If we stop the car and restart it, the power steering returns. My husband took it to our mechanic who says the part is about $500 and the labor is about $200. Shouldn't this be a recall? it's very unsafe and could easily lead to a serious, or fatal, accident. Please check into this quickly before someone is killed. Thank you.

Started the car, power steering worked and then suddenly, while driving on a city street, i hear "ding ding ding" and the power steering suddenly goes out making the vehicle extremely difficult to control and leaving me with no response time.

Steering rack failure due to insufficient lubrication by design.have not had actual failure, but symptoms of steering rack failure present w/in one year of replacement.failure of steering rack could result in steering failure, which would likely result in a crash.

The current mileage was approximately 145,000 and the failure mileage was unknown.

1. I was passing a car up hill on a curve in the road.when i accelerate hard i loss my power steering.i had to applied more pressure on the wheel to get around the car i was passing but half way around the car the power steering kicked back in but because of the extra pressure i was applying on the steering wheel i over steered and almost hit the guard rail.this was on a very busy highway in the new york city area and everyone was traveling at high speed.2. I experience a loss of power steering assist caused by electrical input signals within the steering column assembly.3.gm sent a letter too my home stating they are aware of the problem but will only fix it if the car has less than 100,000 miles.my car is over that limit. Gm says it is not a recall. This is a safety issue.the power steering cuts out at high speeds.

2005 malibu maxx at 35,504 miles. Thumping noise from steering and steering required more effort. Dealerreplaced intermediate steering shaft per chev. Bulletin #06-02-32-007. Cost would have been $174but was covered under warranty.

Ball joint worn out in vehicle at little over 50k miles--had to replace lower ball joint and control arm.very light and small in size for such a powerful v6 fwd---i suspect not heavy enough for this vehicle--have found many others with same problem. Lucky that as a former service mgr. I recognized steering problem or could have been an uncontrolled crash possible---called gm---they said normal wear and tear---i have had several other gm products and all ball joints lasted about 100k miles.

I was driving into a parking lot at the end of my commute when an alarm went of and a "power steering" message appeared on my console. Immediately my power steering was disabled and i had to restart my car 3 times before the power steering was enabled and i was able to turn my car into the parking lot.

This is in relation to what i've seen in a few crash iihs crash videos. I was hit on the left side, with the impact range from the left front wheel to the outside mirror. I was beginning to make a left turn when i was struck. The impact on the steer tire caused the steering wheel to spin quickly to the right as it absorbed the energy from the collision. The steering wheel turned so violently rightward from the force of the vehicle hitting it, that i ended up with a fractured right elbow and torn ligaments in my right hand - injuries sustained from a collision on the left. I have seen the same thing in a few iihs crash test videos. In a few of their videos, the steering column shifts significantly to the left or right so there ends up being no contact between the dummy's head and the steering wheel airbag. I don't know if there is communication between nhtsa and the iihs, or to what standards are set, as i've seen some truly disturbing iihs videos on brand new cars; disturbing enough that i'm surprised that the vehicle is let into the market.thanks for taking the time to read this. My right side injuries seemed very strange until seeing some of the iihs videos in slow motion that explained how this happened.

Power steering assist failed on the highway. Was able to pull off and turn the car off and back on and it came back momentarily. Sporadically went on and off for several days, however have had no power steering since friday october 12th, today is october 16th.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 45 mph, the vehicle veered to the right and the steering wheel jerked violently to the right. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 130,000.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving 45 mph, the steering wheel seized and the power steering warning indicator illuminated. The contact mentioned that the vehicle was previously remedied per nhtsa campaign number: 14v153000 (steering). The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 151,259.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx ls (na). While driving approximately 5 mph, the contact stated that the vehicle lost power steering. Neither the dealer nor manufacturer were notified. The vehicle was not repaired. The current mileage was approximately 149,000. The failure mileage was approximately 148,500.

Had to have the intermediate steering shaft replaced on my 2005 malibu at 9,923 miles and 23 months. Luckily the 3 years or 36,000 covered that.had to have that shaft replaced 10,658 miles, and 34 months later."out of warranty"had to pay even thought the part was "younger" than the warranty when it was new.it being put in new at 9,923 miles was not a factor. Looks like new shaft - no pun intended - every 10,000 miles as long as i own the car.

Steering lock and knocks when turning the car. Vehicle has 44000 miles on it. Started about the time the warranty ran out.

This problem has been occurring for more than 6 months now, possibly a year.hard to determine as it was very inconsistent at first.occurs more often now.when accelerating, generally over 3000 rpm's (think passing on freeway or left turn across traffic) the steering will freeze for a few seconds.there is also a triple bell sound and the message center will display "power steering".in 12/2007 i received a letter from gm saying they will fix the problem with the "power steering assist" if within 7 years or 70,000 miles.i did not have the problem plus i was over miles stated.this week i received a similar letter saying the same, that they would fix the steering if under 10 years or 100,000 miles.again i am over miles(by 7000 miles).i called to confirm and was told that their policy was very strict and would not be able to help me.obviously they know of the issue and are just trying to pay as little as possible in repair/replacement costs.

Turning left from a parking lot onto street. Power steering stopped working for less than one second while making left turn. Power steering assembly has been replaced earlier under a gm recall. Had no issues with old parts before recall. Recall number: 14v153000recall date: 03/31/2014component: steering:electric power assist system

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. While driving various speeds, an abnormal noise was heard from the steering wheel. The contact mentioned that the steering wheel vibrated and caused the vehicle to jerk. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering column needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and the failure persisted. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000. Updated 06/23/17*lj the contact had been informed by an independent mechanic that the strut miunts wewre rusted and were part the reasonfor vibration in the steering column. *as

2005 chevy malibu electric power steering assist failure. Consumer states that gm stated not to bring the vehicle in unless your vehicle has already experienced this failure.the letter stated the problem was caused by electrical input signals within the steering column assembly. If the power steering assist is lost, a chime will be heard and the dic will display a power steering warning message.

There were no events that lead up to the failiures. I have the paper work of the two times i 've taken my care to be repaired. The date i inidate below is not accurate however, just an estimated date.the failure was the electric power stearing has gone out numerous times. I've had it in teh shop twice. The first time, they replaced the steering column, the second time, they claimed its not the steering column, but that it is something they can't fix but can clear out the "codes" and it will be "temporarly" fixed. According to gm " they know the problem exists in this type of car but are unable to fix it"the other problem is the that the steering is pulling to the left. The dealership mechanic claimed it be torque steering and they are unable to fix that as its "normal" i have never had a vehicle pull to the left so much as this car does. They rotated my tires to see if that would work but it didn't.

We bought our malibu maxx in feb. Of 2005. Started have in problems with the steering, in oct 05.there was a knocking-clunking sound when turning the steering wheel. We took the car in to the dealership in dec. Of 05.we where told there was no fix for it at that time but one would be available the first quarter of the year. At the time we had21,000 miles on the car. Finally in the 3rd quarter of the year they had a "fix". The intermediate steer shaft was replaced. The "fix" lasted only 3,000 miles before they had to replace it again. This "fix" again only lasted 3,000 miles. We have asked gm to replace the car and have been told we have too many miles on the car. 41,000 miles. We feel since the car can not be fixed and that we waited as asked by gm, that gm should replace the car or give us the value of the car when we first started having the problem.

2005 chevrolet malibu max, power steering failure - total loss, locked up of steering control at low speed.during low speed turn driver could not turn wheel and lost all steering control of vehicle.this failure was accompanied by a power steering warning on the car's information panel. Vehicle was stopped successfully with out accident.driver turn off ignition, restarted, and steering control returned but seemed hesitant.although this was being reported as of this date 5/15/0) it also occurred a week earlier but returned to normal operation. Previously this car had warranty service on a steering system "noise" covered under a tsb and had been working normally until this issue occurred.vehicle will be taken to chevroletdealer service today.

Steering rack has been replaced 3 times on my 2005 chevroletmalibu maxx. The steering was acting erratic and "thunking" when steering. 3 times the power steering has quit on me. The car becomes extremely hard to steer. I know my wife and daughter would not be able to steer the vehicle in this condition. The first time the power steering failed, i drove it directly to the dealer. When i took the service advisor out, the system had reset itself and the steering was fine. The next 2 times, i pulled over and shut the vehicle off for a short time and restarted it and the system reset itself again. As mentioned, the dealer has replaced the steering rack 3 times, each time saying this is an improved part, and won't happen again. But it does.

Recurring problems with electric power steering system.constant noises and deteriorating steering condition. Purchased vehicle in march and have had it serviced for related problem 3 times in 3 months.

August 1, 2013, was driving off the parking lot at work when power steering went out.it came back after three days but on august 23, 2013, it went out completely.was driving down the highway, doing 65 mph and completely lost steering capacity.power steering light came on and beeped twice. This was very scary until i remembered i would still have manual steering. Immediately got off at the nearest exit.took to get repaired at dealership because of recall related to power steering.part covered under the recall does not and did not fix power steering of vehicle.an additional $700 needed in order to fix the power steering module, which houses sensors.this module, i was told by the dealer, is what is needed in order to completely repair vehicle.why can gm not repair the entire steering component when, apparently, the module is the most expensive and most common part on these vehicles that malfunctions (if the blogs are to be believed), not due to abuse/misuse by owners but due to manufacturing defect(s).

Clunking noise in steeringwhen turning left to right.dealership inspected and said steering gear box is bad.only 33,122 miles.

Clunking in steering again.dealership said the steering box 'new improved" went out and said that the noise is coming in from inside of the box. They don't understand why it keeps going out.this is the third steering box.malibu only has 34,500 miles.dealership tightened steering while waiting for the new box.the car would not straighten from minor corrections.if you turn to the left it would keep going left and if you corrected it would go to toward the opposite side into oncoming vehicles.returned to dealership told them it was an accident waiting to happen and couldn't drive it.they finally gave me a rental car.approximate date 8 of 06.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx. The contact stated that while driving at approximately 25 mph and turning a corner, the power steering malfunctioned. The contact turned the vehicle off and restarted it and the vehicle functioned normally; however the failure occurred again. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the contact was informed that the assist motor for the rack and pinion needed to be replaced at her expense. The contact called the manufacturer and filed a complaint but they did not offer any assistance.. The failure mileage was approximately 95,500. The current mileage was 95,536.

My chevrolet malibu maxx (2005, 17k miles) frequently has a clunking noise that appears to be coming from the left front suspension. The noise is often accompanied by the feeling of a "hit" underneath the driver's feet and on occasion seems to be connected to a steering input (steering wheel moves notably). This happens only at lower speeds (below approx. 35 miles/hour) and during or after left turns and is especially strong on uneven roads. I took the car to a certified chevrolet dealer for repair and have been informed that this clunking is related to a problem with the intermittent shaft of the steering, that this problem is known to chevrolet and has been assigned the number pic3747, and that no repair is possible at this time. They also told me that they have no data indicating that this problem is at the same time a safety issue. But as i have a notable steering input, and as the constant clunking is also interfering with concentration, i consider this a safety issue and thus filed this complaint regarding this problem.

Steering pop when turning car, on 2005 malibu maxx.

- the contact stated that while driving her 2005 chevrolet malibu onthe highway or in the city the power steering didnot function correctly.the steering got rough ,and when turning the steering wheel she heard a clunking noise, butnot sure if it wasfrom the wheel or the engine.the contacttookthe vehicle to the dealership in september 2006 and they replaced the rack and pinion steering.also, the contact took the vehicle to the dealer in november2006 for the same failure ,and they stated that they couldn't find the failure on the vehicle.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving at various speeds a popping or knocking noise was heard from under the front of the vehicle.it was driven to the dealer who determined the rack and pinion needed to be replaced.updated 07/03/06.

The contact owns a 2005 chevrolet malibu maxx.the contact stated while driving 20 mph the wheels would lock. While making a left or right turn the wheels would make a loud noise before the wheel locked again. The dealer was notified, but was unable to offer any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 22,000and the current mileage was 120,000. Updated 06/14/11the dealer replaced the rack and pinion. However, the noise returned. The dealer informed the consumer there was no solution for the problem. Updated 11/23/11

2005 malibu maxx steering--rack and pinion making a thumping sound during sharp turns and as you drive over bumps. A second sound is heard during the turning of the wheels while parking--sounds like a spring being streched.

Dt*: the contact stated the steering column shakes and locks.this occurs intermittently while driving at various speeds.the dealership determined the steering rack and pinion needed to be replaced.the manufacturer has been alerted.

I purchased my 2005 chevy malibu maxx ls as a "program car" thinking it was the next best thing to a new car. I guess i was wrong. Since purchasing the vehicle in april 2006 i have had consistent trouble with my front end. I have had to take it to the dealer for warranty repairs four times! now at 50,500 miles my front end is acting up again. The last time i had my repairs done i was out of warranty and called gmac and asked for a repurchase. Gmac contacted my dealer and returned a call to me stating that i should try another dealer they could not get anywhere with my current dealer. I was not surprised after being told by the shop leader that"his wife's car did the same thing and that the best thing i could do is drive it till its paid for! i have had it with this car and the service my local dealer . I love gmac and i wish they would be more aggressive at dealing with bad dealerships. My dealership made me feel stupid and like i was bothering them. I am still paying on my malibu but am looking to trade but i am so scared that i will just gain a whole new problem from another vehicle...what do i do?

Steering pop when turning car, on 2005 malibu maxx.

The driver information center panel of my chevrolet 2005 malibu is not readable whenever sunlight is present. The panel is too dimly lit to be read by the driver until you shade the panel with your hand or a map and place your face directly in front of it. This cannot be done while driving. The seventeen warning messages that can be generated by the vehicle computer can only be provided to the driver by the dic panel display. Five of these warnings are critical to safety. After sundown, the vehicle sensor activates the headlights and activates a rheostat on the dash which allows the driver to set dic panel light intensity anywhere he or she wishes so readability is no longer a problem.

Rear hatch back hinge has popped off it's pivot resulting in the hatch back slamming down and glass shattering.

The car is a wreck.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle pulled to the left at various speeds.the dealership replaced the rack and pinion and steering column, but the problem persisted.updated

Front suspension is clunky as if there are loose-fittedparts. Front brakes pulsate at freeway speeds causing steering difficulty in corners.

Had to replace right side control arm, i.e. Ball joint.other ball joint appears to be in need of replacement.

2005 malibu maxx hatchback / v6 / at 30,000 miles on odometer steering problems intermittent for a month, mechanic could find no code when i took it to him and he drove to confirmwith power steering having failed - dealer knew right away and replaced the entire steering column although no failed parts were provided to me - power steering still seems weak at times of low rpm - now at 32,000 miles both front bottom ball joints need replacing - they are a sealed unit with no grease fittings. Toyota isn't the only manufacture with safety problems.

I was parking my vehicle.i had put the vehicle in reverse to back up and the gears just started to slide up and down.the gears would not catch at all, they just started sliding.it stayedin reverse. The car would not stop moving backward, so i had to put on my emergency break!i was very shuck up.this is dangerous and alarming when your gears go out.i had my car towed to my house.i will not drive a car that stays stuck in reverse.what if this should happen while i am driving. This would cause a serious accident for me and other safe drivers.please fix this defect!!!!!!!!who will tell my story if i am dead!!!!

My son wrecked his car and it rolled multiple times and none of the air bags went off he was driving and his car struck a guardrail and continued in motion and rolled multiple times he was cut from the car.

I purchased a 2005 malibu maxxfrom an used car dealer and the very next day the car lost the ability to accelerate and the traction control light turned on my instrument cluster. While the car was coming to a stop i noticed that it lost all power and the engine stopped running. The car would turn over but not start.

2005 malibu accelerated at high speed in reverse.

Heat? air condition fans do not blow on #1-3. Only operates on level #4.

Dt*:the contact stated the moon roof vibrated violently along with the entire roof anytime the rear windows were down.the problem is more obvious at speeds of 65-75mph.the vehicle was seen by a service dealer who determined it was normal for vibration to occur with the windows down.the manufacturer was also alerted of the potential hazard.
