Read complaints for CHEVROLET LUMINA (1996)

The air bag light came on and we took it in to the dealer to be looked at and hopefully corrected.we received a$104 charge to tell us that the air bag would cost $710 to fix.no accident or fast stop ever occurred, but now we are concerned that the air bag could go off at anytime while driving or if we needed it to, it wouldn't deploy.the other proplem is with the fuel injectors that we had to have replaced at 41,000 miles (about 1 1/2 yrs. Ago) and one isbad again as well as an sis, pcm, and a sensing module.we are questioning the quality of this product if these repairs are required at this point.we paid close to $800to have the first injectors replaced and are now faced with a bill of $527 for one injector, sis, pcm, and a sensing module.the warranty had recently gone off when the injectors had gone bad the first time.

Airbag light appears on the dashboard and will not go off, dealership is aware of problem.consumer adds that while vehicle was stored at dealership, vehicle was broken into. Consumer took vehicle to another dealer and is expecting original dealer to pay for airbag repairs.

Violent deployment of passenger airbag caused breakage of windshield.

I was driving on a highway and came up to a intersection where i had the right of way. The other person had a stop sign. This person thought that i had a stop sign also so she proceeded into the intersection and i smashed into her making her truck fly across the highway and flipping over.my airbag did not deploy and because of that i feel that i was injured more than if my airbag would have deployed.my car was totaled.

Expresses a desire that a solution should be found to making the passenger's side air bags safe for small women and children.

Vehicle was taken into repair shop for some other work , but mentioned todealer that airbag sensor light has stayed on since vehicle was purchased. Dealer will only dorepair's at consumers expense.

Design of vehicle with air bag is not conducive for drivers5.0 feet tall.

Air bag light comes on.

Air bag deployed without warning.while driving the drivers side air bag deployed inadvertently.the next day when the vehicle was being started the passenger side air bag deployed inadvertently and broke the windshield.*sc

While driving 5 mphvehicle drove over a pipe in the road. As a result, dual airbags deployed inadvertently.passenger's side shattered the window, sending glass into the vehicle. Driver sustained minor burns to the arm and neck.

Consumer requesting for air bag on-off switch.*la

False deployment of air bag broke passenger side windshield, instrument panel and injured 5 people.

While driving on the highway, the driver side air bag violently deployed and about 7 to 10 minutes later the passenger side air bag violently deployed and shattered the windshield.

Air bag module wiring trapped behind module preventing horn to work properly. Wiring not in clip on back of air bag to prevent this.

On 7/20/03 the battery was getting weak so i bought a new battery compatible with the car. On the first start with the new battery the car behaved normally.however, when i started it the second time and was backing up a slight slope of a driveway, the car died.i put the car back in park and restarted the car.without touching the gas pedal with my foot, the gas pedal dropped to the floorboard and the car raced forward with the gear shift still in park.the brakes would not work. I steered the car trying to locate the emergency brakes but they were too far away for me to reach and still maintain the racing car. I thought turning off the engine would stop the car since the brakes has failed but even turning off the engine, it raced even faster and the next thing i knew i had crashed into a tree totalling out the car. I cracked my head into the windshield breaking my nose.luckily, the visor was down and protected my face.i also sustained bruising and back injuries along with the concussion. Also, the air bag did not activate.thankfully,as i am short and if it had, then i would have been decapitated or killed from it.my insurance only gave blue book value to the car as it was unrepairable and had to be totalled. I am wanting to seek legal action against the manufacturer.is there any class action lawsuits regarding this problem on the lumina's? i feel it was computer problem that shut down the car made it behave like it was possess.no lights came on inside the car to indicate there was a computer problem or any other problem.there is only one way to put in a battery so it could not have been the battery.debra k. Vehicle was going 45-50 mph and was involved in a head-on collison.consumer and passenger both hit steering wheel and windshield.dealer stated airbags should have deployed in head-on collision. Manufacturer and dealer have not sent anyone to look at totaled vehicle.there were four injuries in the accident.

Consumer was involved in a frontal collision in whichdriver's air bag did not deploy, cause unknown.please give any further details.

Both air bags deployed.

Air bag warning light remains illuminated, indicating a malfunction within the system.problem occurs within the air bag module.this module is located under the front of passenger's seat closer to back of car. Module shorted out when a small drink fell to the floor. This created a hazard to passenger's airbag.

Driver's side air bag deployed for no reason. *mr the passenger side air bag deployed as well. *sc

The base is not safe.the seat belt will not secure the base to the seat properly due to the belt feeds on the base being too close to the edge instead of more towards the middle of the car seat.to keep the base and car seat in place, more downward force must be applied to it from a point closer to its center.a police officer installed the infant seat per the instructions provided by evenflo and made sure the base was tightened down.installed correctly, we could still lift the end of the base nearest the front cab up to touch the back seat.it actually flopped up and down loosely, even with the seat attached to the base.this would pose a serious injury risk to the infant in the event of an accident- the seat could fly back towards the rear dash and cause possible neck/back trauma. It could possibly even let go completely, allowing seat and child to be thrown around the interior of the car.not only would such an incident injure the child, but also any other passengers that are in the car during an accident.jacksonville police department advised me to return the car seat, purchase one that would install to safe standards and report this install failure of the evenflo cozy carry 5 comfort touch infant car seat to you.

1996 chevrolet lumina, brake lights not working except for in the rear window. If that bulb were to burn out, i would have no brake lights at all. I have discovered, and i am sure, that you are aware that this is a very common problem. Why has this not been corrected?

Original battery failed 8/29/97, replaced under warranty. On 5/10/00 replacement leaked acid on cable, starter and engine. Florida dealer charged $410.12 to replace battery, cable and clean starter. Suspected cause, overheating. Battery is mounted over left front wheelwell with cover allowing little if any cooling.

On 7/20/03 the battery was replaced in my 1996 chevrolet. Lumina.upon starting the car, while still in park, the gas pedal pulled to the floorboard & the car lunged forward out of control.the brakes failed.while dodging people, homes, and vehicles, i tried stopping the car by turning off the ignition to cut power to the motor but this only opened the throttle.the last thing i remember was a loud whine, screaming & blacking out.i awoke from a concussion crashed into a tree with facial, brain, and spinal injuries.gm investigated and stated there was not a problem and will not release the investigation report to me.i cannot find an attorney to sue them.this was not due to driver error. The car was in perfect working order prior to the battery being changed correctly.the 2004 olds alero was recalled for a sticking accelerator.the mph at the beginning of the malfunction of the car, 0 (zero); when the car plowed into the tree splattering me into the windshield head first like a bug, 60+ estimated by witnesses.insurance totaled the car & sold to salvage even though they were holding it for me while undergoing emergency medical treatment.i tracked down the salvage yard for gm and an investigator examined the car but will not tell me what he found out.

Battery failed.

Consumerhad noticed some electrical problems withaltenator wich had to be replaced ones a year.dealer wa contacted, please provide more information.

Since i purchased this car i have had to replace the alternator 3 different times.not only that, but the length of time that the alternators last is shortening each time.i have searched the gm website for a possible solution and discovered that i am not the only one that is having this problem.when i purchased the car it had 29, 179 miles on it.the first alternator went out at 34,000 miles (the dealer replaced it).the second alternator went out at 65,000 (at a cost of $265).the most recent replacement was at 97,000+ miles.there was a possible fix posted on the gm website suggesting that it was a design flaw.

Alternator failure.

Vehicle had stalled out while driving. Vehicle was towed to dealership. Was informed the alternator caused the stalling. No indication of why alternator failed.

Electrical components on car stopped working, and i was stuck in the middle of a busy road.had to have car towed to my house.it turned out to be the alternator.what a hassle.

While parked consumer tried to start vehicle and vehicle would not start. Alternator went out twice within two years. Contacted dealer, and dealer replaced alternator, which was the second one to be replaced.

Horn inoperative.

Horn is very hard to press due to design.

Consumer experiencing ongoing problem with horn intermittently going off for no reason. Dealer repaired horn approximately a year ago, and problemreoccurred a year later, given a day or two.

Design/location of horn makes it difficult to locate; also, difficult to push horn; safety hazard, could cause accident.tt

Extremely difficult to activate the horn/ was almost involved in a collision because driver could not locate the horn.

Horn communication system is assembled incorrectly, causing the hornnot to function correctly, loss of sound. Consumer states when the window is rolled down after a car wash or rain the water comes down freelyon the inside of the car. Dealer advised that the horn is n the proximity of the air bag which keeps it from sounding and that was the way vehicle was designed and there was nothing they could do about it.

Spark plug failed.

Spark plug cracked.

Intermittently the vehicle will not crank, other times it will hesitate, resulting in vehicle not being operable. Mechanic has been notified, and stated could not find cause, reported by owner of vehicle.

Computer failure, causing vehicle to stall.

Computer/brakes failed, causing three warning lights to illuminate on the dash, as well as an accident.

Pcm computer failed.

Ignition key freezes in the ignition switch during freezing weather only releasing when thawed out.

The starter motor has a defective clutch andthe solenoid is attached, and eventually the vehicle will go dead/will not start.had to be towed. The vehicle now makes a hissing noise when startingup. The dealer cannot duplicate the problem. Possibility it has to do with the keys or just the motor.

In wet and dry weather the brakes don't stop car, it slows it down . Consumer states vehicle glides to a stop.starter makes strange noise.mounting bolt missing from radio causing rattling noise.door lock assembly works improperly.window sticking, dealer adjusted upper door and window moldings along track.

Owner of repair shop noticed thatwiring which led to fuel pumpmelted within fuel tank.

Recall work to install a fused jumper harness in the fuel pump's electrical circuit can not be done due to unavailability of parts.

Consumer was traveling about 65mph on the highway and fell asleep at the wheelwhile he was turning around the curb. Vehicle flipped overtwice. Consumer crawled out ofvehicle, and noticedthat flames were coming from underneath the hood. Then car bursted into flames, vehicle was totaled. Consumer wasn't hurt.

Air bag module wiring trapped behind module preventing horn to work properly. Wiring not in clip on back of air bag to prevent this.

Electrical fire started in the dashboard due to shorted out component.

Dt*: the contact stated the engine's intake manifold was leaking antifreeze.the non service dealer determined the top of the motor needed to be replaced.the vehicle was not taken to a service dealer.

Purchased 1996 chevy lumina w/3.1 liter engine.vehicle has been well maintained and currently has 115,000 miles.the vehicle has never been involved in a car accident.the issue is that the camshaft has broken.why would a vehicle that has had regular oil changes and maintenance experience this problem? it seems an extreme problem for a well-cared for vehicle.this was a former police vehicle (first 96,000 miles).my son's girlfriend also owns a lumina (1999, no vin available) and she too has had the camshaft replaced in her vehicle at 170,000.

At low speed the steering locks.if feels as if the vehicle has shut off.

Dt:consumer says vehicle gets hot and immediately stalls. Consumer has replaced engine once before. Consumer has been told the problem is the upper intake manifold.vehicle is serviced regularly, and was taken in for recalls to the dealer.engine in vehicle is currently bad and is costly to replace.

While driving to work one morning on a highway, the intake manifold head gasket blew, mixing the oil with the water, causing the motor to need replacing. I had the motor replaced at a cost of $2680.07. We had an extended warranty of 6 years 50 thousand miles, the motor blew at 6.5 years and 52,091 miles. Nothing was done to help me the consumer. I called the dealer( burtness chevy,303 e.beloit st. Orfordville,wi.53576), and they said it was my fault for not trading in the car before the warranty was up. Then i called gm(central office p.o.box 33170, detroit, mi.48232-5170)and they said a warranty is a warranty. I just now came across your web sight, and i feel i need to let you know about this problem. Hope they can come up with a better reason in the future for other consumers.thanks you, cheryl phillips.

Oil leak 1996 3.4 dohc chevy luminai did my research that is a common problem in these carsthen its costs a pretty good penny to fix by the dealership like $2000.

Lower intake manifold leaking dexcool on my chevy lumina 1996 3.1 and while i was in the midas shop checking my car a girl have monti carlo 97 has the same problem my mechenic telling my he gets alot og these problems with chevy 3.1 3.4

Driver's side rear window went down would not go back up-no problem with this window before-driver's side front window-sluggish,often loses power......driver's side window knob pushed in cannot retrieve it.....engine began over heating in nov...antifreeze put in...antifreeze mixed in with engine oil..engine froze up-had to be replaced.........antifreeze part just shatterted as car coming out of parking space--fluids lost-engine lost power---mechanic reports new transmission needed estimates $2,500---mechanic reports that this or similar failures of transmisssion common on this vechicle and that transmission experts are aware of this and have frequent complaints.....all these events occurred in last 6 months in addition to the need of brake hub bearing on left rear wheel..total estimated cost $5,000

The intake gasket rotted.therefore, antifreeze leaked into the oil.this has happened to me twice.the same exact problem.

I just paid over $700 to have a mechanic replace the intake gasket on my 1996 chevrolet lumina.i have heard that this is a common problem on my car and engine type.that would lead me to believe this is a design flaw.i would like to know if there is a possible recall for this, or what action i should take to be compensated.

Coolant is leaking unto engine, causingvehicle to run hot/rough/ vibrate and tick. Consumer found a technical service bulletin ( tsb ) onproblem, and dealer found no problem. An independent mechanic confirmed that coolant was leaking into engine and it was being ruined.

My daughter brought a used 1996 lumina.she drove it about a month before it started acting up. She lost heat and car would go to overheat and stall. When she got it checked she was told that the intake gasget was shot. This allowed the antifreeze go into the engine. As a result the seller won't do anything about it. She would have to pay more than she paid for it to repair it. So we are very dissapointed with the car. I would never buy one again as i found this is a very common think in luminas for several years running.

Blown engine head gasket, antifreeze contamination. Could be due to head bolts that were not sealed at the factory

While driving the plastic intake manifold failed which caused coolant to leak inside the engine and resulted in the vehicle overheating.the dealer was notified.please provide further information. *nlm

Vehicle was serviced about 2 yrs ago because it started losing power and was running rough. The power window on driver side stopped functioning. Brakes grind when wet even though they have been replaced. Noticed around this time that the car temperature gauge sometimes creeped up above normal. It seemed to be losing anti-freeze. The heater stopped working. I refilled the anti-freeze. It seemed to take care of the problem but it slowly returned.vehicle was also very slowly losing oil. Last month (10/02) i started home from work. The car suddenly overheated. Strong fumes came into through the vents, burning my eyes.i had to stop repeatedly to let the car cool so that i could get home.i work only 3 miles from home.when i got home, the oil stick contained oil halfway up the stick. Started over flowing from the oil cap when i restarted. Smoke was heavy from the back. Had someone check the car. The car is not functionable. Will not turn over. Replaced the starter but didn't help. There is oil in the radiator, water in the oil. Seems to be fuel in the anti-freeze. Appears to be a blown head gasket or more. Have found out that this make and model year was recalled for motor problems previously paralleling these same problems.dt

While starting up the vehicle the vehicle failed to start.fifteen minutes later, the vehicle started.the driver took the vehicle to the dealer. The mechanic informed the driver that the vacuum hose needed replacement.please provide additional information.

Registered by mike kearney. Consumer has ongoing problems with the engine cutting off intermittently when car is running, sometimes when air conditioner and heater are on. Dealer contacted, and cannot remedy the problem. Problem still exists. Provide further information.

Head gasket failure on chevrolet lumina @ 80,000 engine miles. Dealer, del chevrolet fixted problem @ my cost of 1,612.46 dollars. Vehicle has been maintained and regular serviced @ chevrolet dealers on this car, i have there receipts. Problem occurred, heated-up, when traveling to gm dealers on 7/14/01. Should this problem have happened on a 80,000 mile engine?

Engine exhaust gasket has leaked since new causing ticking sound; oil seal defective causing oil leak

The engine started knocking around 100k miles and getting worse ever since. The piston pin is going bad. I found out that gm knows about this problem by a certified gm technician. He told me that all 3.1l engines have this problem and gm wont fix it. I feel shafted and will never by a gm product again.

Blown engine head gasket, antifreeze contamination. Could be due to head bolts that were not sealed at the factory

Consumer noticed a smell coming from underneath the hood. When lifted hood noticed that the antifreeze went intocrankcase or engine block.mixed withoil, and it smelled likevehicle was overheated. Dealership stated thathead gasket blewout.

Car seemed to be overheating and running out of antifreeze much too often. Took it into a mechanic who told me my antifreeze was leaking into my oil, and that my head gaskets were cracked and leaking. Was told i would need a new engine, or the problem would just keep occurring.

Brake lights don't always work on 1996 lumina due to faulty turn signal switch, i've notice this on several other 1995 -2001 luminas as well.

1996 chevrolet lumina, brake lights not working except for in the rear window. If that bulb were to burn out, i would have no brake lights at all. I have discovered, and i am sure, that you are aware that this is a very common problem. Why has this not been corrected?

Dt:the brakes light only worked every now and then, the consumer noticed the same problem on other luminas.this happened without warning. The bulbs and fuse have been checked. The consumer has not taken the vehicle to the dealer.

Dt:the consumer owns a 1996 chevy lumina. The consumer stated the brake lights and tail lights are not working properly. Sometimes they will work and sometime they will not. She has also noticed this on several other luminas. The consumer says that she has changed the bulbs on the brake lights several times and she still notices this problem from time to time.

Turn signal switch is defective. Brake lights and tail lights are not showing in rear, but vehicle dash indicates that they are on. Causeunknown. Please provide any further information.

The contact owns a 1996 chevrolet lumina.the contact's vehicle has three rear brake lights.the lower two lights fail to illuminate.when he changed the bulbs, they illuminated briefly and then quickly burned out again.the current mileage is 135,000 and failure mileage was 115,000.

Turn signal switch is defective. Brake lights and tail lights are not showing in rear, but vehicle dash indicates that they are on. Causeunknown. Please provide any further information.

Failure of mfs causes brake lights not to work unless pull back on turn signal switch. This is the 2ndlumina the company has owned that i have had this problem. Othercar was 1992 same model & type. Dealer says they replace a lot of them. No indication is obvious that your brake lights are not working!! rather costly repair charge $300.00 range as i recall from the 1992. Strange it happened on 1996 model also. Is there a secret recall or factory repair at no charge??

Turn signal switch is defective. Brake lights and tail lights are not showing in rear, but vehicle dash indicates that they are on. Causeunknown. Please provide any further information.

Normal wear and tear causes multi-function switch to fail.this causes safety problems.a small truck was behind me a couple of days ago, and slammed his brakes on behind me.he then pulled next to me and told me my two rear brake lights do not work, but the third (top) one does.also, rear turn signals do not work.right signal works most of the time, but switch will not signal a left turn. All bulbs are fine.in researching just in a couple hours, i found about 40 other reports of the same problem. Multi-function switch replacement is the repair most reports cite as working.the repair is costly, requiring disassembly of steering column.

Turn signal switch in chevrolet lumina causing brake lights to not work.(except 3rd brake light)from my research, this is a well known issue.for whatever reason the main brake lights go through that switch.the defective switch is causing them not to work.the 3rd brake light is not affected because it's not wired through that switch.i know switches go bad, but this switch has went bad on a lot of vehicles causing no main brake lights and should be recalled.

Consumer called complaining about having problems with the turn signal switch on the steering colunm. Dealer and manufacture were contacted and stated that there is no problem. Ts

The contact owns a 1996 chevrolet lumina. The contact stated that he noticed a recurring failure within the turn signal switch which would suddenly stop functioning, causing the brake lights to stop working. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealership where the vehicle was repair. The failure occurred two additional times and was repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 90,000. The current mileage was approximately 308,000.

Fuel filter burned up inside gas tank. The wires were burned and the plastic body was burned and charred. Mechanic was surprised that there was no fire or explosion. He said it was probaly a manufacturer defect and being that i had a full tank of gas saved the car from going on fire.

Driving at approximately 35-40 mph ,going up or down hill vehicle will begin to hesitate, eventually causing the vehicle to stall. Dealer cannot duplicate problem, but has replaced fuel filter and vehicle speed sensor. Defect is still occurring.
