The contact owns a 1996 chevrolet k1500. While driving approximately 65 mph, the air bag warning light illuminated. The contact stated that he inspected the air bag sensor and discovered that it was severely rusted. The contact removed the part and contacted both the dealer and manufacturer in regards to the failure. The dealer and the manufacturer informed the contact that the part was no longer available. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 160,000.

While driving had a direct frontal impact win hich the driver's airbag did not deploy, which did not protect the occupant in this accident. Cause unknown.please provide further information.

When driving consumer smelled burning odor coming from the dashboard.heater blower switch melted, causing the burning smell.

Vehicle was parked. The driver opened the door by remote control and noticed smoke was coming from the driver's door.the remote inside of the door caught on fire.driver extinguished fire, and had the vehicle towed to the dealer for analysis.the mechanic noticed that the switch needed to bereplaced due to an electrical short.

The air bag light comes on intermittently which was then inspected by a mechanic.the air bag wiring that comes up the steering column became worn everytime the "tilt" mechanism was used.this caused a short leading from the steering column. Nlm

1996 chevrolet silverado.consumer writes in regards to vehicle engine problems.the consumer noticed anti-freeze on the ground toward the rear of the engine. He took the vehicle took the dealer, but they were unable to find a problem. A gm service manager stated, they were aware of coolant leaks. Especially intake lekas. The consumer stated one day it started raining, and he soo discovered the wiper didn't work. He drove to the dealer where he was informed there was a recall on some trucks for a wiper board defect. However, his vehicle was not included.

Coolant was leaking outside ofvehicle. Coolant could leak intooil. Chevrolet diagnosed problem and didn't want to acknowledge the problem since the consumer had payed to fix it.

This failure may not be considered a safety defect but it is such a major failure i believe it warrants an investigation.the engine in this truck has failed with only 68,000 miles on the odometer due to a something that occurred during the assembly of this engine at the factory.gm has issued a technical service bulletin describing the problem (tsb # 99-06-01-003) and clearly the fault is with the manufacturers lack of quality control during the assembly process.the truck is no longer under warranty but when a problem this major occurs and it is clearly the manufacturers fault it seems that they should be held responsible.there is no excuse for an engine failure at only 68,000 miles.also, this appears to be a fairly common problem with this engine because the mechanic at the dealership who diagnosed this problem told me that he had heard this engine has had a history of this problem.i have since taken it to several other mechanics and atleast two of them told me the same thing; that they have seen several with this problem.and the most obvious piece of eveidence that there is a manufacturing defect is gm's own tsbwhere they themselves describe a clear mistake on their part during the assembly of these engines.i understand that companies such as gm can't be held responsible for all defects after the warranty period but something this major is inexcusable and should be their responsibility.i have already spent close to $2000 on other unrelated repairs to this truck since the warranty expired and now the dealership wants another $3000 to fix a problem that only exists because of a manufacturing flaw.this is not right and gm should be made to correct these engines whether they are still under warranty or not!the truck just turned 4 years old and it sits in my driveway completely useless to me and it isn't even paid for yet.please advise....

Headlight housing lens cracked.vehicle was not in use at the time the crack was found. There is no evidence of an object striking and breaking the plastic headlight lens.

Failing diesel injection pump on 1996 chevrolet k1500 pickup with 6.5l diesel engine causes engine to stall when approaching a stop, rendering power steering and power brakes inoperable.this is a common problem on 1994 through 1999 gm vehicles equipped with this engine.dealer diagnosed the problem, but refused to repair under warranty, despite an 11-year, 120,000 mile extended warranty issued by chevrolet motor division due to numerous problems with this pump.

While driving the vehicle stalled for no apparent reason which almost caused an accidentoin several occasions.been to dlr 4 times.dlr replaced fuel filler/fuel pump/ignition switch.problem is reoccurring.dealer cannot determine problem.

Fuel pump failed within 44000 miles of wear.believes this is not considered to be normal condition. Dealer not notified.

The contact owns a 1996 chevrolet k1500. The fuel pump assembly failed. The wires were too small a gauge for the load. The plastic insulation caused the wires to over heat and it burned down to the fuel tank. The contact showed the parts to the dealer and they stated that they have never seen this type of failure. He attempted to reach the manufacturer and was unable to speak with anyone. The contact is aware of the safety risk involved. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure mileage was 106,000.

This letter is to provide information regarding a hazardous and potentially catastrophic materiel defect on the 1996 chevrolet pickup (model:k1500 1/2 ton 4.3 l f/i v6).the vehicle had 112231 original mi. And was operated consistent with its intended use.the vehicle is production representative with no modifications or history of damage.on 20 apr 04 while driving approximately 25 mi/hr the engine quit running with no impending indications of a failure.subsequent inspection and repair was conducted by a certified mechanic at ron's firestone, geneva, al.inspection revealed that the connector at the top of the fuel level sending unit shorted-out and melted and that approximately 2.5 in. Of theplastic insulation on the gray wire from the fuel pump to the sending unit was melted.ron blair (owner/mechanic) commented:wiring inside gas tank was melted all the way down to the fuel pump.if fuel tank had not been full it is possible for the tank to have blown up.i have never seen one do this before.*sc

At 70,000 miles the transmission on my 1996 chevy z71 went out, which also took the transfer case out.the truck was always maintained on time and babied.i have owned it since it was new.of course the warranty is up so i am stuck with the bill.i have been researching online and i am not the only one with the same problem.these problems seem to be very common among 96-98 owners.calling gm does nothing.please force them to do something about this problem.

Transmission failure due to faulty sun shelli'm writing to inform you of a serious transmission problem which needs to be addressed.for the second time in 3 and a half years, i've had a gm 4l60-e transmission rebuilt because of the sun shell shearing off and damaging internal parts inside the housing on two separate vehicles. After doing a little research and finding 3 neighbors who had the same problem, it was clear there was a pattern. Additionally, information on the internet confirmed my suspicion, as gm is obviously aware of the inherent problem, and transmission centers are very aware of the problem, and hence routinely stock kits necessary to repair the damage from the failed shell, not to mention the tcc valve issue.i've owned a number of gm vehicles and own two nowa 1996 k1500 pickup and a 1999 tahoe. As mentioned above, both had the same defect and consequently needed to be rebuilt not an inexpensive item. While i support american auto manufacturers, i am sadly disappointed in the failure of not only the defective part, but also in gms commitment to their loyal customers. In 2004, gm finally addressed the faulty sun shell and has begun putting in a stronger machined (not welded) part in those transmissions. However, for the majority of chevrolet truck owners pre 2004, we have been stuck with this defective part and consequently replaced/rebuilt the transmissions due to its failure.

Srta transmission failed four times prematurely. The second failed due to burned gears. The third failure was due to cracking of reverse gear. The fourth failure was due to the third gear not shifting.

Problems with electronic transfer case, while driving on highway vehicle shifted out of gear into neutral.

I was driving down the highway at 65 mph and my transfer case on my four wheel drive threw itself into 4 low. Which caused my truck to skid out of control . I managed to gain control of my vehicle and pull of onto the shoulder where i disconnected the box that controls the transfer case. This gave me two wheel drive which got me home.but i am afraid to hook the box back up in fear of killing myself or others if this should happen at high speed again.

Driver's automatic lapbelt fails to extend from retractor w/buckle not remaining latched once fastened.

My vehicle failed massachusetts seat belt test. They dont lock when pulled on quickly.i have removed and inspected them and it appears to me that the mechanism itself is not capable of passing this testi am believing that the test has been implemented after the manufacture of this particular design of seat belt, and am asking if this vehicle has been grandfathered for this test there are intertia weights in them that will lock them in a collision, and i have tested this in a wide open parking lot by slamming on the brakes and they do lockbut my inspection station is unwilling to recognize thisi wish to know what i need to do to get a passing inspection sticker on my vehicle is there a recall for and updated design of seat belt ?i find it hard to believe that both existing seat belts in the vehicle are "bad"will the nhtsa assist me, please ? thank you

Poor passenger's side seat belt performance,the lap part of the passenger's side seat belt, locks/sticks or will not release,making it impossible to fasten.

I purchased this vehical used on 3-15-99. At the time the salesman and myself noticed the front left seat was loose. We both thought it was just a loose bolt,and no safety concern if the bolt was to be tightened.after i got the vehical home i realized the left front seat frame contained a manufacturing defect, and was not repairable by myself.i looked for recalls on the internet and found similar recalls in that model year.as in nhtsa campaign id # 96e10000. Being as i purchased this vehical at a used car dealer,i decided to take it to a chevrolet dealer to see if it was involed in the recall,they told me it was not,and the used car dealer i purchased it from should stand behind it.truck world said it was not covered,but if i paid their cost for repairs they would have it done for me.i feel this is a manufacturing defect and should be a recall on your part.it is almost impossible to drive as the seat tips back,every time you accellerate.can you please help me ? thank you.

The driver side power bucket seat released and dropped while i was driving, it will not support the weight of a driver.i have since put a scissor lift jack underneath it to hold it up.this is a big safety issue.i being a licensed p&c insurance agent here in arizona - know all about risks/hazard's in the industry.i will not spend the $658 for a new power driver assembly with motor #15662432.as i have seen this is an issue that's posted on this site.i hope this issue can be resolved for everyone!

When the rt seat is moved foward for entry to the rear area it can't be locked and the seat is free to move foward or back durning brakeing or accelertion

The passenger's seat track malfunctioned, causing the seat move forward and backwards unexpectedly which almost caused injuries to the occupant.dealer cannot determine problem.

The consumer's 2 year old adoptive child's top portion finger was fratured due to the seatback folding down on it. When notified the dealer indicated the parts must have been put in backwards when replaced from the recall (97-v-037-000 manufacturer id# 97000). The replacement pieces are plastic. Nlmcovers for pinch hinge points, right front seat, were not well constructed and failed.replaced at cost.*jg

Drivers side 60/40 power seat is unable to lock in place.it will alow the seat back tosuddley fall backward with out use of handle.seat is now unable to stay upright and support any weight.

Abs brake failure

In bumper to bumper traffic vehicle in front stopped suddenly. Truck hit brakes (abs); vehicle kept going & rearended vehicle in front. Took to dealer & mechanic repaired abs brakes. Was not told what caused problem.

My abs brake system comes on under 10mph during normal braking.there is no panic stop involved during the normal braking event.this situation is becoming very troublesome and i'm worried as to whether i'll be able to pull my travel trailer.

Brakes:brakes pulsating when attempting to stop. Driving and attempting to stop and the vehicle kept rolling and would not stop.

Whenbrakes are applied, the brakes become weak, resulting in extended stopping. Distance, brake system is weak, too much pedal effort.

When making a firm stop (not panic) when tires pass over a ridge on dry road surface, pass over a sewer cover(or any kind of road irregularity) abs activates at approx 20mph or less.braking forces lessens for about one truck lenght and pedal vibrates a little. It seems like abs stays on even though the road is dry and smooth. Load in the bed is about 400lbs, tires are good, brakes are clean. Dealer did not want to go for test drive...said there may be a recall for this. Truck has been at dealer about a dozen times the first year and a half for rear brake pulsation and lock up. Went to arbitration..."performing as designed' even though 4 drumsand 6 pairs of shoes replaced . Cover.

The hub of the brake rotor became separated from the rotor during vehicle operation.this resulted in a severe vibration, loud grinding noise and a partial lose of control during braking.when the brakes were applied, essentially, one of the calipers was rendered inoperative as the disc it clamps on had separated from the hub.the hub is sheet metal welded to the disc vs. A complete casting as has been previously the standard for this part. Weld failed resulting in the catastrophic failure of this critical brake component.additionally, had this failed at speed, it is unknown what other damage may have resulted to the braking and/or steering systems.

Upon making a left turnbrakes locked up, consumer lost control of vehicle and went into a ditch.this was due to the brake rotors breaking and jamming into the brake. This failure was caused bypoor design of the rotors, per the dealership.

Stepped on brakes and left front rotors broke loose from its' hub, causing a severe reduction in braking, and a hard pull to the right.brake shop says they've never seen this before.also, right front rotors appear to have stress cracks at rotor/hub juncture.contacted general motors, no satisfaction.

Due to defective brake booster, the braking system malfucntioned, causing extended stopping distance which may result in a crash.dealer replaced the brake booster.

While driving at 55 mph and withoutprior warning,rea rleaf spring u: bolt nutbroke,front tire came off, and the vehicle hit pavement.

At about 50 to 55 mph, the least bit of road roughness starts the tires hopping and sending the rear of the truck sideways.the tires did not come on the truck, they were purchased as replacements for the original tires which posed no problems. It happens very quickly and has nearly caused me to lose control several times. I bought the tires used with about 5000 miles on them. I would assume the previous owner had the same problem and replaced them, which i will have to do to. (tiresize: 265 75)( dot number: tire size: 265 75 )

While driving about 74 mphright rear tire (firestone dualer 256/16) experienced tread separation, causing consumer to lose control of vehicle and crash into guardrail head on, the passenger was thrown into drivers side sustaining injurie., this was the third tire that had problems with. Engine checkwarning light was on when i picked up vehicle after routine service at gmc dealership. Computer reset four times, but light would keep coming on again. No problems could be found with any systems. Dealership reflashed computer and updated software via gm tsb about this, but problem still continues. Everything seems to work fine, but the warning light is worrisome and if i ignore it as gm has suggested i fear that when the warranty expires they will say it is my fault if something really is wrong.

One timewindshield wipers will work fine, the next time they will not. They have stopped while driving. This causes a severe safety hazard. Gm dealerships say this problem is not covered under recall bulletin # 98043. I do not believe this. I think the dealers are trying to sell a fix that is the manufactures responsibility. Gm would not subject their customers to a safety hazard and be subject to the libility.

Intermittent problem with windshield wiper failure. Alldata web site shows sept. 1998 safety recall for this problem for my truck -- #98043 -- but nhtsa has no record of this. Called gm and they said there is no such recall, but i have heard from several other chevrolet and gmc truck owners with same problem with wipers. This is a safety issue.

Contacted gm re: recall # 98043. First told no such recall. Now told my vin not included. Over 71,000 recalls in canada. Many more vins not included in recall that have same problem.

Windshield wipers and horn work intermittently.saftey issue when the wipers won't work in inclement weather, and horn won't when needed.also cruise control works intermittently.all three have wires going through the steering column, possibly linking the three into one bigger problem.

Windshield wiper works intermittently when it is geared atlow pace.same make and year of vehicles were recalled forwindshield wiper controller board which shutwindshield wipers off.manufacturer advised consumer thatvehicle was not a part ofrecall due to vin.

Winshield wipers would stop at any time causing the drivers view to be obstructed. I contacted my dealer after reading your nhtsa campaign # 98v150001. They checked with gmc and said this did not apply to my vehicle. I am a master service technition (briggs and stratton) and i electronics are a hobby of mine. I removed the circut board and discovered the solder for 3 of the lugs was cracked. I resoldered the lugs and have had no other problems since. I beleve this problem to be a serious safety cocern and beleve gm should recall these vehicles also.

Gm recall #98043 should cover this, however, vin range does not include all possible units prone to failure.this is a widely known problem.
