The drivers shoulder and lap belt is physically too short in length and prevents forward or lateral movement of more than just a few inches, even if the brakes are not applied and the driver moves his torso forward slowly so as not to trigger the locking mechanism. I am not a large person although my height 6'1" and my frame 210lbs. Would put my in the upper percentile of drivers. Because the belt is so short , it becomes necessary to unbuckle the seat belt to perform such simple tasks as flipping the rear view mirror when confronted with a vehicle approaching from the rear with their high beam headlamps on, changing the radio dial, or trying to adjust the outside mirror on the van. I have measured the distance of the belt on the passenger side front and find them very close in length. The problem appears to stem from where the shoulder belt is anchored on the side wall above the drivers left shoulder. This location is easily 5 inches farther back on the bulkhead than what the passenger side mount is. This coupled with the fact that the drivers seat is anchored further forward than the passenger side further reduces the belt length. I have tried using a belt extender but in doing so i find the lap and shoulder belt are not in a safe position should a crash occur and significant internal injury would result. I had contacted glaval (the conversion manufacturer) and they informed me the seats and restraints were factory original from gm, and they don't mess with them or change them in any way. Any help you could give in this situation would be greatly appreciated.
