Takata recallvisible gasoline leakage after vehicle hasn't been parked over a period of months.then i began to take notes of what , when , where this leak was occurring,i would fill the tank, park the auto in the garage . The next time i used the vehicle, a noticeable gas odor, spot on the garage floor was noted. I started to place a cardboard under the front end to more readily be able to observe the substance leaking.the odor was unmistakable.several occurrences n spotting is evident after having parked in my garage . #1 , i love the chevy 2004 corvette it is a beauty, inside the brain or computer , its a danger. On aug 12th , i had an accident that did not have any failure of my driving abilities as per the following codes that gm has had problems with, and have made it impossible for a gm mechanic to fix, i did not lose anything except money and respect from gm.#2 i went to an independent corvette race car and mechanical corvette specialist that confirmed that the codes are meant to come and go, making it impossible as per a gm certified mechanic , and service advisor, i've taken my 2004 corvette to twice and have been charged over 3k usd. Vara chevrolet made many errors, not checking a code could end in a fatality , as per the above i talked to about all the codes i have received on my car, and the tragedy is that gm knows this. I recently was on a trip to midland, texas from corpus christi, nervously i made it with a inspection done correctly, not in the manner described to the texas dot, i put 4 new tires in which i had to drive this vehicle from vara to approx. 20 miles of freeway to get new rear tires as they were bald, for some reason,my car is listed by quick check, a vehicle information service , that has no phone numbers that my vehicle was reported in an accident on aug 12th and a theft, which has a case number, the police said there was no such case, i have the copy that was mailed to me by odessa all american chevy , i only want my money back , no corvette needed. I was told i would be charged with harassment, by odessa police dept, and i have avoided any phone contact. Im not sure what harassment is in the legal system, i know now, i am powerless. Please read the following codes diagnosed after my car failed on sat, and 8 times on a trip last week, i have been out of pocket so much money, and gm has even admitted that this is a problem, code is dtc c1287 or c1288circuit descriptionmy email is hacked please contact .
I was driving on a highway at 65mph in a bumpy construction zone.all of a sudden, without warning, the engine completely shut down.i was able to steer the car off to the shoulder of the road.after letting the car sit for a minute, i was able to restart the car and immediately drove it back home on a surface street and took it to the dealer the next day.the dealer put it on the scope and could find no problems with the car.the only thing i could think of was that i had a medallion on the key ring and the service manager advised me to only keep the ignition key on the ring because the swaying of the key chain may have affected the ignition switch and turned off the engine.based on the recent info on keys swaying and cutting off the ignition to the car, i was wondering if it affected the corvette models also.i only keep the ignition key on the key ring and haven't had a problem since that time.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet corvette. While driving, the service column lock indicator illuminated. The contact took the vehicle to casey chevrolet (11700 jefferson ave, newport news, va 23606, (757) 320-1476), but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. Driving 65 mph on interstate 90 wisconsin. Car just died, could not get to restart. 1 hour on the side the road. Cars flying inches from us. Police officer finally stoped and called tow truck and stayed behind uswith lights on so we wouldnt get hit. To find out this is a common problem on low milage corvettes.should be a recall because the chevy dealer in middelton wis didnt know what was wrong, it keeps on blowing the fuel pump fuse.they think, but not sure its the fuel pump. 2500.00 to fix. Corvette forum states this is a common problem. This is a safety issue i woulld think.
I was driving south, on i-25, in albuquerque, nm, when i bumped the ignition key with my hand and the engine shut off. This occurred a couple of more times since then.when i heard of this happening with other chevrolets, i called a dealer, in albuquerque, reported that it had also happened in my 2004 corvette c5. The service manager told me there were no recalls, orders, or tech orders for that model car.have other occurrences been reported? i haven't seen any on the corvette blogs.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet corvette. While the vehicle was parked outside the garage and the ignition was started, the clutch was released and the vehicle seized. Also, the steering column lock warning message illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact associated the failure with nhtsa campaign number: 04v060000 (steering). The vehicle was not able to be driven. The contact called maguire chevrolet cadillac of ithaca (located at 35 cinema dr, ithaca, ny 14850, (607) 272-9292) and notified them of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealer and manufacturer were not notified. The failure mileage was 6,890.
Vehicle cut off while driving @ approximately 25 mph.dash indicator read "check gauges".i was able to pull to the side of the road and found that the fuel pump fuse had failed. Tried another fuse, but it blew immediately.vehicle was towed to local chevrolet dealer who has diagnosed problem as both fuel pumps have shorts causing the fuel pump fuse to blow.this is a very dangerous situation and needs to be investigated.it should be noted that after a day of sitting at the dealership, the fuel pump fuse was replaced and the vehicle then started enabling the dealer to diagnose the problem.chevrolet zone rep was contacted, but refused to help. There is obviously an issue with the fuel pumps as the replacement fuel pumps from chevrolet have been redesigned. It should be noted that vehicle has only 18,316 miles.
Problem 1:gasoline smell with leak and ultimate failure of valve to transfer fuel from one tank to another.occurred continually with fuel tank registering full to 3/4 tank then dropping to empty and vehicle appeared to be out of gas (would not run until fuel added to tank).solution:took vehicle to chevrolet dealership for repairs.repair invoice states:"replaced l/s gas tank and pump and sender and replaced r/s fuel pump and sender. Check fuel gauge and tanks found l/s fuel tank leaking at top of tank.weld also found fuel level sensors open circuit and fuel system not transferring fuel from tank to tank.retest after repairs. Ok"problem 2:a/c display lights do not illuminate and controls are difficult to see at night.solution:took to chevrolet dealership for repairs.repair invoice states:"controller has internal failure, replaced controller."
1) i received a recall notice from chevrolet recall information processing center on may 13, 2004.the recall is # 04006 - electronic column lock system.this recall was started on feb. 9, 2004 according to your site.2) i purchase the 2004 chevrolet corvette coup on september 9, 2004.i question chevrolet's commitment to safety.issueing a recall in feb. Of 2004 and not bothering to repair the defect well the car was in their total control for 8 months, then selling me the car knowing full well the defect had not be fix, then waiting another 9 months to notify me.i contaced the dealer on may 16, 2005, to see if the car had the recall defect repaired. It had not.so chevrolet has waited a total of 17 months.not exactly a consumer advocatefor safety to the driving public.3)according to the dealer, this work can only be done during the week, not a weekend.so now, i have to miss a day of work for a problem that should have been taken care of before i even purchased the car. Now i know why chevrolet always sends out a satifsfaction questionaire 30 days after purchase, because they know most of their vehicles should last that long. I'm sure i will not get one after a year has pasted.

When using telescoping steering wheel the active handling light a came on and the car pulled hard to the left into oncoming traffic lane while driving . I had never used the telescoping sterling wheel feature prior to this .*dt
I was traveling 70mph on a 4 lane hwy. When suddenly my brakes locked up for a split second causing me to veer into the left lane. I was able to recover quickly, however it could have had serious consequences if another vehicle had been alongside me.the service active handling message appeared on my dash disengaging the active handling and apparently the traction control system. The message stayed on the remainder of the trip. The next day the message was gone apparently resetting itself. Because of the dangerous situation i took the car to the local chev. Dealership (len dudas motors, stevens point, wi) however they were not able to determine the cause. The sensors tested normal and the mechanic theorized the yaw rate sensor bracket was at fault, but he was unable to find a part. During the past week the problem resurfaced 2 more times. I've researched corvette forums online and it appears that this is a problem with corvettes and there appears to be many opinions on how to fix the problem, most of which i don't understand because i am not a mechanic. Also if my local chevrolet mechanic cannot fix the problem what can i do. Right now i can't drive the vehicle for fear of causing an accident.
As i was driving the service active handling message came on the dic.then the car brakes engaged pulling the car to the left.
Electronic stability control, traction control systemat different speeds my traction control warning light comes on for no reason, and the vehicle feels like its trying to engage the abs system. It now comes on just abut everytime i get i drive my vehicle. I have since learned that this is happening to thousands of corvettes at an alarming rate.

After telescoping steering wheel, active handling system warning light came on and while driving car pulled left into oncoming traffic lane
Active handling engages under normal driving conditions on my 2004 corvette. I learned that there is a recall for this for vehicles mfg from march 2004 to jan 2006 with telescopic and tilt steering wheels. My car was mfg in may 2004 and has the tilt /telescopic steering wheel. I was also told that the recall was vin specific and since my vin number was not listed i had to pay for the repair which cost me $581and change. I don't know why my car with the same problem and same defective parts was not covered. My understanding is the harness is to short and the telescopic movement cause wear in the connector which causes thesteering wheel sensor to show an open connection telling the computer to activate the handling system.. My dealer says was my problem an open sensor and not the connector and claims they did not have the replaced part to provide to me...since i totally lost control of my car but was fortunate not to have had an accidenti plan on reporting this complaintto the gmac ,the newspapers if not to an attorney to plea this case for reimbursement. I suspect people are being ripped off and being charged for a sensor replacement instead of owning up to the connector issue...
When brakes are applied they start to catch and a grinding, chattering is felt in the brakes until i let up off the pedal.the active handling code appears and then goes away.on several occasions the active handling code appears and will not go away until the vehicle is switched off anf then restarted.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet corvette.while driving 40 mph on slick pavement, the traction control warning light illuminated for approximately three seconds and then dimmed at one point, the contact deactivated the traction control in order to control the vehicle.suddenly, the vehicle lost complete power, and both the rear driver's side wheel and steering wheel locked up.the vehicle struck the median on the rear passenger corner panel and spun around several times.the contact had been experiencing issues with the valve stems losing pressure.he referenced nhtsa campaign id numbers 04v273000 (steering linkages) and 04v060000 (steering: column locking:anti-theft device).the contact has pictures available.a police report was filed.the current and failure mileages were 55,000. This request involves a safety bulletin [#0400c6], dated 2/8/2006 relating to the electronic column lock (ecl) for approximately 96% of all 220,000+ c-5 generation corvettes. 2004 was the last year of production for the c-5 generation.total production in 2004 is estimated to have been about 35,000: out of this, 20,861 vehicles were covered by the above service bulletin, but as mine was assembled after vin #45120862 until assembly began for the 2005 model year (c-6 generation), my vin number was not included on page 2of the bulletin. Prior to the steering column on my car locking on 6/28/2016 i had not been made aware that this perilous condition existed.gm has indicated that it will not provide any funds to offset the cost of repairing this fault because it was not included on any service bulletin. I believe that service bulletin #04006c was intended for (or should apply to) the entire c-5 production -- unless there is some reasonable explanation as to why my vehicle has been excluded (such as a different ecl configuration was used, etc.) in either event, i feel the company should honor my request for a full reimbursement for funds expended to replace the faulty ecl.i have written a letter to gm explaining the facts surrounding this request and have attached a copy of that letter for your review.

Driving on a 4 lane highway, my headlights went completely dead and would not come back on. Had to pull off the highway for approximately 5 minutes. This has happened 3 times after dark.
Prepurchase recall search.
While traveling down the freeway at around 80 mph on a straight flat surface, the corvette sharply veered to the side as i heard a loud screech from one of the brakes it lasted for about a second. The turn was so abrupt i thought i was going to roll but after fishtailingwas able to get things goingstraight. Immediately a service active handling system message popped up.happened about a week later going about 60 mph not quite as abrupt. This condition could have lead to a fatality.
Our 2004 corvette with 27,630 miles suddenly began leaking gas fumes so severely in our garage that we were concerned we could have an explosion. We also could not sleep in our bedroom at the opposite end of our house due to the gas fumes. We had not hit anything or had anything unusual happen to our vehicle and we had a gm dealer in chandler, az determine there was no damage to the undercarriage of the car. The dealer determined that the driver's side gas tank had cracked near the top of the tank. We contacted gm customer support and after we waited a week, with the car at the dealer's lot, gm determined they would do nothing! they refused to either recall the corvette, admit there is a defect in their gas tanks or assist financially in replacing the gas tank. We then had the gm dealer replace the tank at a cost of $1,991. This price is after the dealer reduced the cost by giving us a 10% goodwill price reduction. Due to the serious safety defect in gm's gas tank and crossover system, we believe gm should immediately recall the 2004 corvettes as various other owners have reported that their driver side gas tank has cracked and leaked fuel and gas fumes. This is a safety recall and definite epa issue. The vehicle and our garage certainly could have exploded and the vehicle was undriveable while leaking fumes. It certainly could not have passed an emissions test. Is gm waiting for an explosion before they act?
I have a 2004 chevrolet corvette that is leaking gas. Mechanic said it is the "fuel tank crossover". After much researching, i have found that this is a big problem for this year. Cost will be over $2,000 to repair. This should be a recall! some of these corvettes have caught fire.
Leaking fuel tank or fuel connector.upon filling gas tank, gasolineleaked from fill connector or fuel tank, causing large spill on the ground, very fumy.
Fuel tank is leaking vapors and fuel. 1. There are no specific events leading up to failure2. Failure is continuous3. Nothing has been done to correct. First noticed on or about june 1, 2010.
I am experiencing strong odors of gasoline, faint at first, but now very evident around the vehicle and in the driver's compartment.i am quite concerned to place the car in the garage, or even drive it.checking on line, i found a department investigation, but nothing on a recall.the complaint was prevalently posted on forums with the most common source as the gas tank and/or crossover pipe.dealers seem to be using the opportunity of fear of a fire for overcharging (~$2500) for a repair that should be a recall.would you please advise with my options.
Very strong gasoline smell when car is parked in garage. Updated 07/26/10.
I own a 2004 chevy corvette and gasoline and fuel vapors are leaking from my car. One of my two gas tank is the source of the leak and it needs to be replaced. After taking it to gearhart chevrolet on route 46 in denville nj, they explained that the entire tank needs to be replace and it will cost over $2,000 for parts and labor. I have noticed that there were many complaints about this issue with the 2004 corvette and want to know if the issue has cause a recall.
I bought the 2004 vette coupe on 5-29-10 from a local dealer.the car seemed clean.i have put a little over 1,000 easy miles on the car in 9 weeks.i started to notice a smell coming from the car when i would get home and began to run fans to get it out of the garage.i finally took it to a local cadillac dealer since i was not sure i could trust the dealer that sold me this car with a problem and they found a gas leak at the joint where the tube that connects the two tanks comes out of the right tank.it only drips when it has been driven but is now quite bad.i have not dared drive it for the last week.it has not been worked on because i was advised to call gm to see if they could help out on this costly repair.i have not heard back from them as yet.the gm rep did ask me to take it back to the original seller for another inspection even though another division of their company has already identified the problem and even showed me the leaking location.this is a very dangerous situation as gas now drips on the ground in front of the right rear tire.any thing you can do to see to it that this situation is corrected quickly may save someone's life.i consider myself fortunate to have found out what was wrong without being hurt or killed.
Fuel leak. I identified the leak source as cracks in either the fuel tank cross-over tube quick connector (connector) and/or the "hot-plate" weld joint of the connector to the tank. The root causes are attributed to errors in connector material processing, variations in the welding process, and high stresses placed on the driver's side connector during vehicle use.
Chevrolet corvette 2004 start noticing a fuel odor in the garage brought to the shop they remove the driver side fuel and discover that it was crack around the crossover pipe.
Strong gasoline smell from drivers side passenger compartment upon gas fill.
2004 chevrolet corvette coupe leaking driver's side fuel tank. Started leaking about july 2009 after driving approximately 8300 original miles by original owner. Leak became worse over time and resulting in strong gasoline smell. Had dealer inspect the car, he determine that the fuel tank leaks at the crossover connection of the left tank. I was concerned about the fire hazard having the car in the garage where a gas fired waterheater is located. I had the car repaired by the chevy dealer on january 12, 2010, at a cost of $2083.-. The repair consisted of replacing the left fuel tank. I also noticed the car's mileage dropped from about 16mpg to less than 12mpg in city driving.
When i was filling up my car at a gas station i noticed a rather strong smell of gas. I looked under the car to see that it was leaking fuel. I finished the car trip and took it to the dealer. They said the gas tank was leaking and needed to be replaced.
2004 corvette owner. When i park my car in the garage there is a strong fuel smell.i took the car to the manufacturer and they told me that they have had multitudes of issues with owners who have 2004 corvettes on the fuel system, especially pertaining to the gas tank. The crossover leaks.
Left side fuel tank leaking and dripping fuel on garage floor. Fuel appeared to be leaking from the top of the tank. Immediately took to chevy dealer service dept. And they later informed me the gas tank was cracked and needed to be replaced. Total costs $1768.00.
Purchases 2004 corvette.when i filled up gas tank, fuel odor was evident.the gas smell filled my garage and went into the house.i took to chevrolet dealer, who said that a smoke test showed a fuel leak near where the tank is located.a more detailed diagnosis would cost about $1000, and any work would be added to that.
2004 corvette, coupe. Strong odor of gas on every fill up. Particularly strong odor on the drivers side. No indications of gas leaking on the ground, gas odor is strong inside the vehicle also. Odor disappears when the tank is about 1/2 full.
2004 corvettefuel leaks on crossover tubes between tanks. Faulty seals, assembly. Fuel vapors, fuel leaks while fueling and after. Maximum tank capacity without vapors and leak is 1/2 tank. Cost to correct is upwards of 2k. A large quantity of 04 corvettes have this problem. Still not repaired at this time due to awaiting if gm will finally admit faulty system design.updated 003/30/10updated 10/05/10
2004 chevrolet com.edition z06 corvette. Purchased in sept 2008 with 5500 miles from the original selling dealership. Now with approx 9800-10,000 miles a fuel leak has developed when fueling the car up. At approx +1/2-3/4 tank fuel spills out under the car on the drivers side. This year saw an installation of a newstainless fuel crossover line between the tanks. They have been notorious for leakage along with the driver's side tank in the area where the crossover line couples to the tank. Along with what i consider a major safety risk due to the possibility of fire, (the exhaust and fuel tank are in very close proximity) this also must be an epa/emission violation from escaping fumes, vapors and fuel. This vehicle has been painstakingly maintained and is in as new condition (10,000 miles) this is a defect from gm and due to the inherent possibility of loss of life and/or property damage should be recalled or at least repaired by an authorized gm dealership. This vehicle does have a 80,000 mile emission warranty under which this falls.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet corvette. Henoticed a gasoline odor after he replaced the gasoline cap, but the odor remained. The vehicle failed the stated inspection, due to a gas leak that was located near the rear left tire. The manufacturer will be contacted. The vin was not available. The failure and the current mileages were 100,000.
If you go the corvette forum online you will see an ongoing discussion on 2004 corvettes with fuel tank/crossover pipes venting fumes and or leaking. It seems limited to the 2004 model and the problem is cracking fuel tanks or bad crossover pipe seals that require tank replacement to repair. They are charging upwards of $2,400.00 to repair this! since it vents raw fuel and or fumes into the air i feel this should be a recall for safety reasons besides the emission violation! this is a very common problem on this model and should be looked into before some ones car explodes!
I just noticed the posting about the fuel leaks in 2004 corvettes.i have been noticing a strong fuel smell in my garage after driving my corvette.the smell subsides after a day or two, and no evidence of leaks can be seen under the car. Perhaps there should be a recall to have these checked out.
I have a 2004 corvette coupe and i am having a gas smell or leak from my crossover connector on my gas tank. After reading many articles from other corvette owners i know that this is a serious problem and should be a recalled item. This is a safety hazard as the gas tank and leak comes right over my dual exhaust and could cause a fire.
2004 chevrolet corvette began leaking fuel after 5k miles. Dealer said it was a faulty fuel tank and crossover tube between the two parts of the tank.$1400 to replace fuel tank. The car could have burned to the ground, there was fuel running everywhere at the gas station!
Smell of gasoline when stopped and after car is parked overnight.updated08/04/10 the consumer notified the establishment where the vehicle was purchased. After inspecting the fuel tank, they found a wet area with fuel on the top and side of the left fuel tank. They replaced an o-ring seal on the left of the fuel tank cross-over tube. The problem was not resolved.updated ivoq 08/05/10
A 2004 corvette coup developed a strong gasoline smell and leaks on the driver side when the fuel tank is almost full. Mileage is 45,836. Replaced gas cap to reduce gas smell with no improvement then noticed leak during refueling.
On thursday, aug. 12, 2010, i stopped by at a gas station to fill up my gas tank on my 2004 chevrolet corvette coupe.after traveling approximately 4 miles from the gas station, i noticed a gas leak underneath coming from the left driver's side near the gas tank area.after discovering the problem, i immediately drove the car to a chevrolet service dealership. After having a certified gm mechanic looking at the problem, they discovered is was a defective tank connector (crossover pipe) that cracks under stress.what needed to be replaced was the o-ring seals and connector pipe ($250).the labor charge for replacing these parts on a 2004 corvette was $845. It is also my understanding that in 2003 to 2004, gm had these crossover pipes changed from a rubber to a steel material because of gas and highway emissions.i would like to make statement to every owner of 2004 corvette, that there is in fact a defective crossover pipe that will leak gasoline and will eventually cause a fire hazard if it is not replaced.
2004 chevrolet corvette: this problem became evident after a strong gasoline odor and gasoline vapors began to be noticeable in the passenger cabin. Now gas has been detected leaking from under driver side seat. After researching the issue on the internet it is clear this is wide spread problem with the possibility of fire and or environmental damage. The car was purchased used one year ago. Nothing has been done yet to correct the problem due to lack of funds to have the dealer address the issue. Most information i have seen place the repair at around $2,000.00.
Left side fuel tank leaking gas.
Strong smell of fuel and occasional dripping of gas. I am on vacation in illinoisfrom arizona and am now facing a$1500 bill just to get back home. I see gmdoesn't care so maybe ford would like a vette.
Left side gas tank crossover tube leaking, 2004 corvette z06. Confirmed with a repair by an authorized gm repair facility. Paid out of pocket.fuel tank could only be filled up 1/2 full or a heavy fuel smell and/or leaking would occur.

Strong gas fume's when tank is half full.
Had to have the gas tank replaced on my 2004 chevrolet corvette convertible at a cost of $2600 in september of 2009.have since learned that nhtsa is investigating this.please add this to the list.
04 corvette zo6 leaking fuel when i filled it. I have been smelling fuel for a while now and i guess this why. It seems when i was almost done filling it up it started dripping fuel on the ground in front of the l/r tire. Took it to dealer no results yet.
Fuel leak on 2004 chevrolet corvette. Strong gasoline odor inside the vehicle.tank leakage if filled for $20 or more of gasoline.
Fuel smell when filling car with gas odor is also in car.
I have recently been told by representatives of young chevy dealership in dallas, texas that i have a gasoline fuel leak at the connector of the two gas tanks.in my opinion this is a "life-safety" issue that must be addressed by general motors (gm) immediately.i love my 2004 corvette and plan on continuing to drive it daily until it is properly "fixed" at no cost to me, or i die driving it because it was an unsafe condition caused by gm and not addressed within a total recall of the defective assembly.i will gladly join a class-action lawsuit for this un-safe condition created by gm.
Strong gasoline odor inside the vehicle after fillup and when parked in garage that started around 05/15/2010. I replaced the gas cap and that did not help. I hadmechanic look at it and said it seems to be a cracked fuel tank or crossover pipe leak . Drive-train must be drop to verify and cost to repair upwards around $2k-$3k . After a internet search this is a know common problem for this year corvette. This should be a manufacturerrecall!
Check engine light on - strong fuel odor interior and exterior - gas leaking under driver side on garage floor after fillup. Mileage 17,940. Certified corvette dealer mechanic remarked that seals were deemed flawed.gm needs to issue safety and environmental recall and reimburse.had to have fuel tank replaced - cost totaled $2,500.59!please investigate this dangerous safety issue and force gm to recall and reimburse.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated there was an overwhelming odor of gasoline in the vehicle. He replaced the fuel cap but continued to smell the odor. The vehicle was taken for state inspection and did not pass due to a gas leak being found at the rear driver side tire. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vin was not available. The failure and the current mileages were 100,000.
The contact owned a 2004 chevrolet corvette. While the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed a puddle of gasoline on the driver side beside the rear tire. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnosis or repair. The approximate failure mileage was 34,000.
Strong smell of fuel inside the car and outside the car in the vicinity of the gas tanks.
Leaking gas. Mechanic says gas tank is leaking needs replaced. Seems to be a problem with this car yet there is no recall?
I own a 2004 corvette and am very concerned about the many reports of a mfg. Defect in the fuel tank crossover quick connect, causing a fuel leak and potential fire, loss of life."the crossover quick connect is an injection molded component molded at viking plastics using a material provided by polyone corp.during the compounding process at polyone corp. On september 30, 2003, polyone corp. Mis-processed a 3,000 pound batch of the crossover quick connect material which significantly degraded the molecular weight of the glass filled olefin material and ultimately the fracture toughness of the quick connect.""polyone also knowingly reported incorrect pellet size on the material certs." suspect that components that should have been scrapped, were re-introduced into production on at least two other occasions."this is from a gm letter from terry m. Stone to dave reek on 10/08//2004 subject: fuel leaks-root cause.also in another letter pe 10-015 n100150 response dated june 30, 2010 on page 13:"fuel tanks with suspect quick connectors using material compounded on september 30, 2003 and january 7, 2004 were installed in vehicles produced from approximately october 22, 2003 through march 19, 2004.""gm does not believe that the alleged defect represents an unreasonable risk to vehicle safety."i strongly disagree with gm's statement. Any fuel leak caused by a mfg. Defect poses a major risk to vehicle safety due to the potential of fire from leaking gas.once again, there have been many reports of this defect and i am very concerned that my car could have a defective gas tank which should be replaced by gm if a leak occurs.i encourage the nhtsa to issue an immediate recall of these defective tanks on 2003/2004 corvettes/cadillac xlr vehicles before there is a fire or loss of life.updated ivoq 11/02/10
I own a 2004 chevrolet corvette convertible and it has a strong fuel smell when i drive it - the smell emanates inside the vehicle.
Each time i filled the gas tank there is a gas odor.the passenger side tank on my 2004 corvette showed signs that gas had been leaking from the top. After driving a while the odor and leak stopped.replacing the tank was the only way of correcting the problem and avoiding a fire.
Since buying this car at auction.i noticed a fuel smell coming from left rear wheels.i have asked the dealership if there were any recalls or specials announcements dealing with car and was told no. After reading the corvette forum and finding there was a repair for the fuel tank.now my car is out of the coverage time frame andmileage however with the tank being defective shouldn't they at least cover the tank. Or what was the agreement between nhtsa and chevrolet.
Smell of fuel inside the house after parking my corvette in the attached garage about 3 hours after returning home.upon investigating the source of the odor, discovered pool of gas dripping underneath car on the drivers side.concerned gas could ignite from hot exhaust, spark, or discarded cigarette from some other motorist.
In late 2003 and the 2004 chevy corvette models went from a rubber crossover tube to a metal one. Something in the new system causes the fuel tank to crack near the connector or the seals to fail. This allows fuel and heavy vapors to leak and the vapors go right into the cabin. Needless to say this is a huge safety issue not to mention an emission problem.
Own a 2004 corvette z06 with 66,000 miles.at about 63,000 started to smell gas fumes.bought a new gas cap but still smelled fumes.took it to a certified corvette mechanic and found the leak to be the left fuel tank at the crossover pipe.he replaced both fuel tanks and cross over for around $1900.my brother also owned a 2004 corvette with about the same mileage and had the same problem.he took his to a dealer and they replaced both fuel tanks and crossover for around $2700.
Drivers side gas tank has a leak nita's has open investigation on this complaint.
Noticed gas leaking on ground after refueling the car....i don't drive the car much and since then there is always a strong smell of gas. The car now has 39850 miles on it and the smell is getting worse.
I filled my tank today with no over flow of gas. I got in my vehicle and started the car. I now have a very strong gasoline smell. It is all throughout the cabin and make gas appears to be running out faster than normal.i park in a garage which has a gas water heater in it. I am very concerned that the house could catch on fire if the leak gets stronger.
On june 25, 2009 i posted the following thread on the corvette forum website:i began pumping fuel slowly and when the fuel started to spill under the car i stopped and i could not detect the leak point. The fuel gauge readof a tank. After a short time period the fuel quits leaking. I am guessing that i have a crack in the fill tube. Could something else be going on that i am not aware of besides a fill tube crack? wow, of all the things that could go wrong with a car, this is a first for me.the second tank connector joint on my car is split also. I went to the dealership to check it out for myself. They pressured up the tank with nitrogen/smoke and smoke was pouring out of the connection joint. Bad news...........$2400 to repair with new parts and 9 hrs. Of labor..........the great news.. Thank god for my gmpp, it's covered. My only complaint is why gmpp would not cover to have the parts overnighted for $100?? they will pay the extra three days of car rental instead, for a total of 5 days. Just doesn't seem to make good business sense, oh that's right it's gm!!further more the car only has 34k miles on it, never had this issue with any other vehicle.
In 2007 i was filling my car up with fuel. When i got home i noticed a leak on my garage floor. This happened only when i filled over half a tank. After finding a knowledgeable mechanic to handle this job, they removed the transaxle to expose the fuel tanks, we realized that it was a leak in the cracked connector of the left hand tank, where it joins with the crossover pipe.i had to order a new lh tank and a crossover pipe from the us and after huge expense and months without my car, we finally fixed the problem.now it seems this is a common problem arising in the 04 corvettes and needs to be addressed before a fuel fire fatality happens.
Noticed puddle of fuel under car aft of driver door. Took to dealer who replaced crossover pipe which they said was cracked. Under original warranty.
The gas tank is leaking on my 2004 corvette.
There was a heavy gas smell and the check engine light came on. Took the vehicle to a chevrolet dealer to correct. They said the gas tank had a leak on the top of the tank. I thought this strange but had them replace it. There was much back and forth and the dealer said he would give me the tank as a chevrolet good will gesture, but i would have to pay labor.
I own a 2004 chevrolet corvette. While the vehicle was parked in the garage i smelled a strong fuel odor. I checked and he replaced the gasoline cap,and noticed a gas puddle on the ground washed the vehicle but could still smell fuel. The vehicle was taken to achevrolet mechanic who diagnosed the failure and confirmed that the fuel tank pipe connectors were defective. The fuel tank connectors could not be replaced; therefore, the fuel tank had to be replaced. The vehicle wasn't repaired. The failure mileage was 35,400 and the current mileage was 35,400. The chevrolet dealer diagnosed the following issues: needs left side fuel tank and sending unit $3,887.50, rear brakes pads and rotors $517.50, front brakes pads and rotors $482.50, brake flush $165.00, induction and injector services $350.00. Service rear posi diff. $165.00. Currently i am a cancer patient and due to medical cost i am unable to afford the repairs. This vehicle is the only mode of transportation that i have.any assistance that you could afford me would be greatly appreciated shouldn't the issues be a recall/safety issue. Thanks in advance..r. Thomas
Smell of gas noticeable when car just sitting in garage.service engine light also came on.vehicle brought in for service and found to have right fuel tank leak.(of importance was the fact we had the left gas tank replaced about a year before this event at which time i thought it was just a freak occurrence until it happened again)
2004 chevrolet corvette all... Faulty fuel tank crossover connector cracks and allows fuel to spill profusely onto the ground and vaporizes on components near the exhaust system. Limited to 2004 due to mfg change in that year.
Each time i fill the gas tank there is a strong gas odor until the fuel level is below half a tank and then the odor of gas is nonexistent. The drivers side of the car has a stronger odor of gas when present.
2004 corvette z06 leaks fuel under the vehicle and very likely into the passenger compartment judging by the smell. Car has 18,xxx miles on it, completely stock and never abused. When filling the fuel ends up pooled under rear driver tire area. Smell inside is very strong of raw gasoline. Smell remains for days if parked, and small puddle found under the left fuel tank. This vehicle is in almost brand new condition.
Strong gas smell behind driver's seat.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet corvette.after gasoline was placed in the vehicle and it had been parked for a while, the contact noticed that all of the fuel was leaking underneath the driver's side of the vehicle.the dealer stated that the fuel level sensor was the cause of the failure.the contact stated that the original owner of the vehicle had this component previously repaired and it should not be failing again.the vehicle has not yet been repaired because she feels that the manufacturer should have repaired it correctly while it was under recall.the current and failure mileages were 5,800.
I kept getting strong fuel odors in my garage but never could locate the leak. I went to fill up and gas ran down the pavement on the driver side. I took the car to the dealership and they informed me that the fuel tank had a crack in at and it spilled when i filled up directly over the exhaust pipe. The tank was replaced with a new one. The old tank was left at the dealership.
Strong smell of gas whenever i fill up. Unable to locate any leaks right now. Strong gas odor will last until i drive for 50 miles or more.
My 2004 corvette z06 leaked gasoline from the hose that interconnects both fuel tanks. The tanks and connector were replaced by extended warranty but they were replaced with one of similar identical design. After doing some research it seems like this was not a one case even m any 2004 owners report the same issue. Considering the risk of the problem a more appropriate redesign should be performed.
Fuel leak in crossover pipe was discovered after strong fumes in car and gas leaking under car.this has happened on my car plus one other of the same model year and purchased at the same time..
Fuel leak by left side fuel tank all the time[ steady drip]i have done nothing to repair problem at this timevehicle is unsafe to drive.
1. Traveling in high speed lane of freeway vehicle suddenly stopped running without any forewarning.2. First and only time this occurred3. Dealer replaced the in tank fuel pump.
Gasoline smell/leak when you fill the tank on my 2004 chevrolet corvette.there should be a recall as this is a common problem.
My 2004 corvette has a problem with fuel leakage when i fill it i get a heavy odor of gasoline im afraid it may burn my house down if i leave it in the garage now.

I have a brand new 2004 corvette 1 1/2 months old with only 1341 miles on it. While driving home in rush hour dallas traffic on a very busy fast moving road, my engine died in the middle of the road.i could not restart the car & was in a very serious situation risking the possibility of being rear ended. Luckily a policeman came by and parked behind me to shield me from the traffic.if i had been on the freeway, i could have been killed. The gm dealer where i purchased the car (ray huffines chevrolet of plano) is acting like it is no big deal. They said it is the fuel pump & they will replace it when they can get a fuel pump and if it happens again, to bring it back.if it happens again & i would be on the freeway, i more than likely would not be alive to take the car back in.i drive 50+ miles a day to & from work mostly freeway driving.i feel the dealership is trying to put my life in jeopardy.i want my money back and out of this car. In researching,i have found that 127,0002004 corvettes have been recalled for steering problems. I was never advised of this when i purchased this car or of any fuel pump issues.i have purchased a brand new car every 3 years for the last 20 years & i have never had a problem like this, especially with a brand new $50,000 car and i have owned 280zx, 300zx, rx7, supra, and lexus.i need help from gm or someone to resolve this.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated while driving 35 mph, the contact smelled an abnormal fuel odor coming from the engine compartment. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the local dealer to be diagnosed. The contact was informed that the fuel tank crossover pipe needed to be replaced. The failure mileage was approximately 36,000.
I smelled gas in my garage for approximately 1 week but found no leaks. While filling up at gas station i notice a large puddle forming under car and saw gas leaking from tank. Dealer said gas leak was found in gas tank, crossover fuel line and two other fuel lines. Very dangerous situation. Dealer said manufacturer defect in parts. Took 10 days to repair as the first time tank was replaced there was no fuel pressure and had to be redone.
Noticed a gasoline smell getting out of car. Puddle of gas on ground under fuel tank. Dealer changed out fuel tank. Service writer said the cross over pipe had a deformed fitting..
Gas tank leak ..brand new car 2004 corvette... Gas was leaking from the crossover pipe ( what dealer said ) needed to replace this and the left side gas tank. Took 25 days to fix no parts. Been told by several people that this is fairly common. This leaked about a gallon or more on my garage floor could have been a very dangerous situation as i have a gas hot water heater and there is a pilot light. Fumes were considerable when discovered. Also leaked gas while driving with dripping and noticeable gas.

Smelled gas for about a week and then noticed that the car when started was leaking gas. I took it to my local dealer and he said after inspection the gas tank will have to be replaced. I have been waiting a week for the replacement but the dealer is saying it will be another week minimum. They cannot find the tank.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated that they began to smell gasoline coming from the vehicle. The fuel tank was replaced. The dealer stated that the fuel was leaking from the tank and that since there was a nhtsa investigation, they were unable to discuss the specifics. Gasoline lines were resigned in late 03 into early 04 chevy corvettes. The result was leaking gas which is both a safety and environmental hazard. Gm dealer refused to cover because dom was 01/04and mileage was 11982 when leak was discovered. Therefore i had to pay independent auto repair service $1945.45this a major job. Exhaust, transmission, defective left gas tank, etc had to be dropped and the motor tilted to replace the gas lines and left tank. This a major problem and gm factory rep says he is only willing to cover $700. Help. I have all documentation inc pics, letters and parts.

Smell gas odor outside the car, mostly on the driver side. Gas leaks found by the dealership on the driverside fuel tank, seal on the fuel pump, and the interconncting hoses for both tank. All parts replaced.
Check engine light warning. Right side fuel tank leaking.
Strong odor of fuel inside and outside of my 2004 chevrolet corvette. Brought car to dealer and had to have fuel tank and crossover pipe replaced at cost of $2,200. Nhtsa appears to be looking into recall of 2004 corvette fuel tanks.

I noticed a fuel smell in my garage from my car.i took it to a mechanic and he found that the tank was leaking as described in gm service bulletin 10150 in the connection of the crossover between the tanks.the car has 56000 miles on it.this is a known defect caused by the use of improperly mixed adhesive in the connector.i called the number on the service bulletin and gm said they would not cover the fix on this known defect because the arbitrary time they created for repair on this had lapsed.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated the fuel was leaking from the fuel tank due to a fracture on the inside. The contact took the vehicle to a mechanic who confirmed the crack in the tank and that the leak was coming from the filler neck. The failure mileage was unknown.the current mileage was 105,500.
Strong fuel smell after filling the gas tank. Goes away once tank is less than 1/2 full as read by the gauge.
Strong smell of gas when parked in garage, always used carport until now so i never noticed. But now have a garage, but i am afraid of strong fuel smell may be dangerous. Has new gas cap and no gas leak.
After a recent fill up, i smelled fuel in my garage after parking my 2004 chevrolet corvette for several hours. I checked online, and discovered that my car falls within the vin range for the special coverage adjustment (#10150) issued in 2010. I took the car to a local chevrolet dealership where it was diagnosed as a cracked fuel tank at the quick connector. Unfortunately, the 10-year limit has expired. My vehicle has just over 40,000 miles so the 100,000 mile limit hasn't been reached. The chevrolet dealership won't replace it because the time limit is up. So far, general motors hasn't offered to replace it either. They'll only contact the dealer to attempt to work out a more favorable deal. The quote i received for repair was $3,472. This is an extremely serious safety issue and a known defect, but gm will not address it properly. They'll offer free replacement to other vehicles with fuel leaks (06-09 cobalts) regardless of mileage or time, but not their flagship automobile. I would like the nhtsa to reexamine this very dangerous situation.
Put 15 gallons of gas into tank, immediately noticed gas smell inside car and outside, drove approximately 10 miles and smellincreased.stopped car and immediately saw gas dripping in front of left rear tire and forming a puddle, stopped dripping after 5 minutes or so. Drove to home and let sit until morning, had car towed to chevrolet dealer that morning. Told by dealer that gas tank is cracked and crossover pipe is defective.repairs to be near $3000.
Engine light came on, took to mechanic, fuel vapor/fuel leak identified, smoke test performed, source appears to be tank/tank straps.
The vehicle has a fuel leak.i just purchased this vehicle a few weeks ago, it's 16 years old andhas only 36,000 miles on it.it smelled terribly of fuel when i purchased it.i had the vehicle looked at and it has a fuel leak where the quick connectors connect to the fuel tanks. Anyhow, there's a special coverage adjustment which extended the warranty to 10 yrs/100,000 miles.i'm obviously outside of those parameters, but i feel that since the manufacturer admitted fault and stated that my particular vin is affected, they should be held accountable for fixing a safety issue with my vehicle.how they got away with issuing a special coverage adjustment for such an issue rather than a simple recall is beyond me.
Large fuel leak coming from drivers side rear tire area. Leak seems to coming from the top of the fuel cell.
Driving a 2004 chevrolet corvette at 65 mph and engine shut down, luckily able to coast to side of highway without an accident. I had car towed to local chevrolet dealer-where vehicle was purchased 19 months prior)dealer stated that fuel pump inoperative and required replacement..thetwo fuelpumps( regular fuel pump and siphon fuel pump) located in fuel tanks ,were replaced and all tanks and muffler were re-installed.the fuel pumps were not operating ,so the fuel tanks were removed again, and a relay was found to be defective, fingers on relay were curled up and not allowing fuel pumps to run. The cost of replacing fuel pumps was charged to me at $2700,however the cost of replacing the relay and all parts removed to replace relay, was charged to chevrolet for a defective relay.the vehicle was picked up from dealer by me on 9/18/2014;then returned 9/19/2014 as gas vapors were detected by me inside vehicle and in my garage. Dealer currently has vehicle-9/21/2014...updated 10/22/14 updated 4/7/2015
Car began gushing fuel out of top of tank once fuel system pressurized.hired rollback to take to mechanic who informed that crossover line was bad.mechanic also stated that there was a recall for this issue.i am second owner of car, which only has 2150 miles on it, so knew nothing about it.i would like to be reimbursed for this expense!
Since purchasing the vehicle used in 2005, i always smelled gasoline fumes after a fill up. I always attributed it to spillage and the fact that the filler tube was about a foot from my head.this year the fumes began to persist, regardless of the quantity of gas in the tank.after returning from a 3 week vacation in july, we were greeted by overpowering gasoline fumes when we opened our garage. I am certain that the fumes were concentrated enough to start a fire, had there been a spark from a light switch or some other igniter.after ventilating the garage i searched for the source and for the first time saw a small gasoline leak on the floor of the garage under my 2004 corvette.i immediately searched online and found that hundreds of complaints for a similar problem had been addressed by the nhtsa and chevrolet, so i took it to my dealer, who verified i had the same problem and they replaced the left fuel tank and crossover pipe.the cost for parts, labor and tax was $3,676 and the dealer says that the repair for this known manufacturing defect is outside the extended warranty that chevrolet agreed to, as noted in nhtsa action #: pe10015.i never received notification of the problem in 2010 or i would have had chevrolet service check the vehicle for the problem at that time. I am currently in the process of contacting chevrolet customer service, seeking reimbursement of all costs associated with this repair.

Gasoline leak from a crossover pipe connection connecting the two gas tanks.drippig raw fwel onto a hot exhaust system and transmission. Commom problem on tnis year and model. Repair was covered for first 10 years and 100,000 miles by manufacturer. Still and issue with cars not repaired.
The top of the left fuel tank is cracked and leaking fuel. This is a known problem for 2004 model corvette's and cadillac xlr's. Gm refused to do a "recall" on this problem although it is very dangerous and could result in fire or death of the occupants.
Summary: in its june 30, 2010 response to odi's information request letter, general motors (gm) identified the leak source as cracks in either the fuel tank cross-over tube quick connector (connector) and/or the "hot-plate" weld joint of the connector to the tank.the root causes are attributed to errors in connector material processing, variations in the welding process, and high stresses placed on the driver's side connector during vehicle use.gm also identified the scope of the subject vehicles involved to be those produced from approximately october 22, 2003 through march 19, 2004.gm does not believe the cracks represent an unreasonable risk to motor vehicle safety based on factors that include; low rate of fuel leaking to the ground, detectable fuel odor, the cracks are at the top of the tank, leaks are detectable during refueling, small quantities of fuel that leaks out, and no associated property damage or personal injury claims.on august 13, 2010, gm issued a "special coverage adjustment" to remedy fuel tank quick connector leaks and extend the warranty for this issue to 10 years or 100,000 miles in certain 2004 chevrolet corvette and cadillac xlr vehicles.vehicle owners will be notified by mail of the adjustment and will also be entitled to reimbursement for previously paid repairs covered under the adjustment.(see file for, service bulletin 10150: special coverage adjustment-fuel tank quick connector leak).the closing of this investigation does not constitute a finding by nhtsa that a safety-related defect does not exist.the agency reserves the right to take further action if warranted by the circumstances.http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/defect/results.cfm?action_number=pe10015&searchtype=quicksearch&summary=true
There is a known leak in the left fuel tank. My vehicle has symptoms but was never fixed. Vehicle is 15 years old but only 76,000 miles.
Have been in contact with 2 employees from gm, called and left voicemails and sent emails.no reply after it was requested that i take the corvette to my local dealership for diagnosis.the ecl motor is not working property, causing the steering wheel to lock up and fuel supply to shut off.sent attachment with diagnosis; however, no reply.gm indicated that this was previously fixed, but it obviously was not.my assertion is that there should not be a expiration date on safety recalls, and the ecl motor is not working properly creating a very dangerous situation. This happens every time that i drive the car.there have been several instances of me starting the car, pulling into traffic, and then the car shuts down.it has been very scary as i pull the key and wait 10 seconds to restart the car.sometimes i have to do it twice.it is my contention that gm should be responsible for fixing this problem that was previously identified by gm as an issue/concern.
Driver side gas tank has been leaking for about a month am having heavy fuel smell when car is parked and after fueling up
Takata recallvisible gasoline leakage after vehicle hasn't been parked over a period of months.then i began to take notes of what , when , where this leak was occurring,i would fill the tank, park the auto in the garage . The next time i used the vehicle, a noticeable gas odor, spot on the garage floor was noted. I started to place a cardboard under the front end to more readily be able to observe the substance leaking.the odor was unmistakable.several occurrences n spotting is evident after having parked in my garage . The auto was parked overnight in my garage.i amlisting the latest calendar date and photo. I have other dates in my notepad.2) my seatbelt occasionally will not lock. I hear the click of a seatbelt lock then upon driving away from my home ~ ,25 miles ~ my seatbelt unlocked through no fault of my own.3) airbag cannot be checked for effectiveness .
Fuel leak from passenger side tank.if tanks show anymore than 1/2 full i get dripping of fuel on the pavement. This happens right after the car has been running.. Stationary or in motion.this is a severe fire hazard.the chevrolet dealer explains that this complaint had an extended warranty but that has expired.gm should have a social obligation to fix a faulty design that is causing a fire hazard like this.
2004 chevy z06 corvette has a fuel leak on top of the driver side above the fuel tank coming from the cross over tube. The plastic couplerhas o-ring that i thinks has failed. I jacked the car up on my own took a bore scope up thecoupler and it was cover in fuel. This vehicle has no trouble codes in the computer system. I used a snap-on modis scan tool to do a full sweep of the vehicle. The mil is not on, i think there should a evap lightsaying that hydrocarbons are escaping from the fuel system. Looking on line there is a lot of complains about c5 corvette having this issue. Therefore being an automotive repair technician servicing cars for a living i feel action should be taking for the safety of the consumer, and the environment know that fuel vapors are escaping into the atmosphere. Plus with fuel leaking around the gas tank and the exhaust system running an inch and half away from it there is a potential of having a fire happen to someone valuable corvette. The was a fuel odor long before the fuel cross over tube starting leak. At that point the gas cap on my car had fail to i replace that the fuel cap fuel smell went away. Using my snap -on modis, i was able to test the evap system andpurge it with any trouble codes on or mil light being on or any issues what so ever. With the gas cap failing there should have been a po440 code stating a large evap failure code. In this case there was nothing i call my local general motors dealership they said, there should be a code to loose gas cap. I said, there was nothing and dealership was shocked. I thank you for taking the time to read my complain and hope appropriate actions to render is issue on c5 model corvette.
Fuel leaking from fuel tank when i fuel
Leaving service station after filling car with fuel gas fumes were filling the car. Parked it in garage and next morning garage stunk of gas fumes. Backed car out of garage and saw no fuel leaking but fumes still very bad in car. Called local chevrolet dealer and they said there was not a recall for this. Husband took car to auto shop and put on hoist, where a wet spot was found. Mechanic said the connector tube between the two gas tanks was wet from the gasoline. No way to take a photo because the area to look up and see the connector is so small.
Gas smell coming from rear of car after driving. No visible leaks, but leaking fuel vapor.
Fuel leak from fuel lines or fuel tank. Dealer chevrolet won't cover the charges, that it expired in 2014. I just bought the car last july.previous past away and didn't know anything aboutthis problem.
Fuel tank leak after filling tank. Sends cel code for evap system. Fuel leaks from tank onto exhaust pipe. Dealer will not fix. I never received a "recall" notice or bulletin.
Left side fuel tank developed a leak- this is a problem known to gm- they offered warrantyrepairs for ten years-i purchased the vehicle after this additional warranty had expired- my complaint is this is a known defective part which i would replace at my expense however gm has discontinued this part- i feel that while gm will no longer cover the cost of parts and labor the replacement parts should be available
After filling up my vehicle, drove home sat in driveway for a few minutes, adjusted radio stations, i smelled a strong odor of gas, turn vehicle off still smelling gas, looked under driver's side of vehicle and seen a puddle of fluid, put my finger in it and it was gas!, i'm thinking now that's why the used car dealership only put a half a tank of gas in it! purchased this 2004 corvette back in march 2018 have only put 60 miles on it, it now only has 14,936 miles on it! what could have happened if i parked the car in shopping center parking lot, with a cigarette that just been thrown down?
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated while refueling the vehicle, fuel was leaking from under the vehicle. The contact mentioned that there was no fuel odor or leakage when driving the vehicle. The failure only occurred when the vehicle was being driven. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the filler neck needed to be replaced. No repairs was made to the vehicle. The failure mileage was 19,000.
Gasoline smell
One day i noticed that my garage had a strong gas smell. Over time, i realized that if my gas tank was approx. Below 1/3 full it did not smell. Chevrolet informed me it was covered for 100,000 miles/10 years whichever comes first. However, i never knew a recall could have a time limit because obviously this is a safety issue. I wrote chevrolet a certified letter describing my problem with no response. This is a common problem which is confirmed by looking at your site.
2004 corvette - fuel leak at crossover tube. Cracked fuel tank. Tank leaks when fueled. Strong odor of fuel in driver compartment. Fuel leak on ground at service station. This is a known defect and gm should be required to repair this defect. Has nhtsa made any effort to require gm to repair or recall these cars? if not, why?
Fuel tank crossover tube has a crack.i found a special coverage #10150 the nhtsa issue in august 2010, but has expired.i contacted gm and asked for assistance, to which they refused.my car has 20k miles on it. I have performed all maintenance, keep it meticulously clean and not drive it recklessly. If i fill up the car there is a noticeable fuel leak to the point there is a puddle under the car. At this point i cannot drive the car for fear of fire and the car will not pass an emission test.i purchased the car in alaska in 2009 with 9k miles on it.i never received any info regarding the nhtsa #10150 special coverage. The estimated costs of repair is between $3000 to $4500.is there any assistance the nhtsa can provide?
Gasoline vapors are leaking from fuel vent and transfer lines, creating an explosion hazard. The problem is more of an issue when parked allowing a spark to ignite the fuel vapors.
The fuel tank leaks when the engine is running. In 2010, this condition resulted in an additional warranty for the issue that expired in 2014, but i have a lower mileage car (less than 18,000 miles) so the issue did not occur until now. The problem emerged suddenly after fully refilling the fuel tank recently.
This car has 23,000 miles on it and i am the original owner.it has developed some sort of fuel leak one of the two fuel tanks or the connecting tube while sitting parked the garage.gm has know about this issue for years.they did not warn owners of these cars of this problem.now that i have this issue i have discovered the gm would fix this if you discovered this problem in ten years or 100,000 miles.this is a major safety issue, the car could explode if a person walks by it in a parking lot, in an accident or parked in a parking structure.this car is now a ticking bomb due to the failure of gm to notify owners or this potential problem.all corvettes are not daily drivers that is why the mileage is low.there are many cars out there with this problem.it is important that gm should have to notify all owners of this vintage of car of this issue and fix them before people get hurt or killed.not only the owners of these vehicles are at risk, so is the general public.
I fill up the fuel tank. Got home and smelled gas real bad. Leaking under left tank. I called dealership.they will not do anything. They said to call gm. I called they will not do nothing. I have own gm all my life . I will not buy a gm no more, thanks
The contact called on behalf of an owner of a 2004 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated that the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic due to a fuel leak. The mechanic determined that the plastic opening of the fuel tank, which connected a primary tank to the secondary tank hose, was fractured and fuel was leaking. The vehicle needed a new fuel tank and crossover components. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 39,000.
I had a strong fuel smell in my garage and a small puddle of fuel on my garage floor. I had gotten a recall notice from gm some time ago, took my car to the dealer at the time and they said they could do nothing unless there was a leak. Now, i have the leak, but gm refuses to fix the problem because some time period has expired. This leak has been repaired by another shop, but i am out over $2,000 for a problem gm knew could cause the car to burn up. I seek for gm to reimburse me for this repair of a critical safety issue.
I bought a 2004 corvette used with 67k miles on it. The dealership had onlyfilled the tank to less than half full.,after my first fill up gas poured out from underneath, behind drivers side tire. I paid $ 16,500 for the car , so i took it back to dealer and they said they would repair. After about 10 days i went to dealer and noticed the car had not even moved. He said they did not know how to fix it and they had another dealership in another state that they would need to take it to. I left with the car unrepaired.is there anything i can do ? i believe it is a recall on the crossover tube and the recall has expired. Close to a $1500 to $1800 repair
After filling the gas tank strong gas smell coming from fill area but no visible fuel leakthe gas smell does not go away after days and many miles driven.

Parking brake will not holdmy car on a hill in neutral. My local chevrolet dealer had four attempts but is unable to fix the problem. The dealer then said that the parking brake is not intended to hold the car but only to assist. Sam daniel from the nhtsa told me to put in a complaint due to the fact that the standard for parking brakes is to hold on a 30 degree hill for 5 minutes.
Clutch would not disengageafter high or low rpm the clutch remained engaged.was able to work it loose after recyling the clutch pedal.
Shifter pops-out of reversewhen fully engaged in reverse the shifter pops out.this a known problem and has to do with the transmission and not the shifter, although it is sloppy also.
Dt: electric seat shoved consumer into steering wheel.the seat's motor continued to push the consumer forwardeven after the seat had gotten to end of it's track.it was hard to unhook the fuse in order to stop seat motor.on july 2, 2005the consumer made an appointmentwith the dealer, who stated that the computer was the cause of the problem.

While driving my 2004 corvette the active handling message come on at the dash and while driving this causes the brakesto pull the car from one side or the other suddenly and this happens very often. I am afraid this could cause the car to have a serious accident.
When brakes are applied they start to catch and a grinding, chattering is felt in the brakes until i let up off the pedal.the active handling code appears and then goes away.on several occasions the active handling code appears and will not go away until the vehicle is switched off anf then restarted.
As i was driving the service active handling message came on the dic.then the car brakes engaged pulling the car to the left.

Steering column lock recall: dealer inspected vehicle and reprogrammed and performance test. Date accomplished - august 31, 2004.approximately 6 months ago, this vehicle began displaying column lock error message "remove key for 10 seconds" which causes the vehicle to stall if you should try to start it. The vehicle will start without having removed the key for 10 seconds, however, it will stall upon beginning driving. This message occurs every time vehicle is started and may recur several times before car can be driven. Dealer informs us that general motors will not perform necessary repair at their cost. We strongly disagree with this as it is a recurring recalled safety condition.please advise on nhtsa's position with regard to this matter.

The vehicle's electronic column locking system was having intermittent severe failure. When trying to steer the car after ignition and moving down the road the wheel would lock in certain positions and to prevent a crash i would have to stop the car and hope the locking system released. I found that this issue was covered by #04006c product safety recall. When i contacted the service department at nucar chevrolet; they indicated that the recall was not still open. Thus i was forced to have my mechanic repair this before a serious crash occurred. I also called the chevrolet product recall line and was told that my vehicle was not one of the affected vin's. That is not the case if you review document id#1761087 or the attached documentation i have found. On 8/24/16 i paid $215.46 plus my time and talent to research and bring this forward. I believe gm needs to reimburse me for this issue. Please advise how best to proceed. Thank you

This first happened last year and it has now happened several times this past month.chevrolet says there is no problem but i am living the problem.when using the tilt and telescoping steering at highway speed, the following message appears in the driver information center ?service active handling system?.the car then acts like one of the brakes lock up.further this just happened when i was using the cruise control at a speed of 65 mph.the jerking of the vehicle is very dangerous.even with two hands on the wheel this unexpected breaking of the vehicle scares the daylights out of you.

The contact believed that the failure was related to the recall. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 14,600 updated 6/7/12 updated 06/22/12
I purchased a new 2004 zo6 corvette in november of 2003. The car currently has 1510 miles on it and i am afraid of the safety of the car to drive it since the 2 episodes of a safety defect as described below.was notified by general motors of a recall notice, 04006 electronic steering column lock system, once in april and once in september. Contacted the dealership to have the recall fixed both time and was told that the tool to install the part that fixes the problem is on back order until january 2005.twice while drivng the car the steering column locked up while the car was moving narrowly avoiding an accident. I contacted general motors about the situation and my concern of the car ever being safe and my inability to trust driving the car at any speed since being subject to this type of performance. They discussed buying the car back with regional managers of which they declined to do so.i have not been able to drive my car since april of 2004 to present day because of the 2 episodes of the locking steering column. I will never feel safe in this car could not conscienely sell or trade it without wondering if anything resulted in harm or death to an innocent person.i feel gm should buy the car back and resolve the problem.
Consumer dissatisfied with recall repairs. 2004 corvette steering column would make a humming noise when turning after engine was warm.***nar*** the consumer did not have any problems with his vehicle until after she took in to to be serviced for the recall.
The so-called "fix" gm has for the 1997-2004 corvette column lock problem does not fix the problem.it merely puts a band-aid on the problem to protect them from lawsuits.i do not understand how this can be allowed by law.i have had to resort to an aftermarket part to fix the problem and chose to ignore the recall due to this situation.i should not have to do this.gm should have to fix the problem.and i should be reimbursed for the proper repair i executed to the car.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet corvette. While the contact was driving approximately 5 mph, the steering wheel locked without warning. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where the steering column and relay switch were replaced. The failure occurred after the previous recall repair under nhtsa 04v060000 (steering:column locking:anti-theft device). The contact stated that the recall remedy was insufficient. The failure mileage was 19,786.
This is stated on my work order as "generic recall".on date below i took my 04 corvette to the dealer for this work to be done. The c-5 generation has had chronic problems with the steering wheel continuing to be locked after inserting the key. Many motorists have been stranded in bad situations with this feature. There was a recall for the auto. Trans. That removed the plate from the steering column so the steering wheel would no longer lock. The wisdom being the vehicle would be in park anyway and not easy to steal. What they did for us with straight shifts was reprogram it so if the column locked up the fuel would be shut off.i want to state at this point my car has not locked up 13,00 miles but i don't like the odds being against me. We are dealing with a relay and a sliding pin that has a history over time being problematic. There are products on the after market that some people have purchased but i am reluctant to buy one my self because i've heard 1 they won't work if you have let the dealer do the reprogramming 2 they could screw up the computer at big$$$$ or 3 if this [xxx] thing ever locks up with me at speed i want g m totally on the hook .gm wants to say this is not a safety issue but if there is something with a car that over time has proved to strand people in areas that are not safe to be stranded in the times we live in your safety is involved. Let me give you an example of how i look at this. Lets say i knowingly have a tire that has a slow leak and i don't repair it then one day it suddenly leaks fast and i am in a dangerous situation then i'm real stupid. We are caught in a bad situation the facts are out there. Most owners would probably be glad to sign a release not to hold gm responsible if our car is stolen if they remove our locking plates i know i would. Remember they did for the automatics ,they never would if this was not a problem . My biggest concern continues to be can this [xxx] thing lock up at speed. Remember murphy's law. Please help us . The consumer's vehicle experienced the same problem as stated in nhtsa recall# 04v060000 which states that on certain passenger vehicles equipped with electronic column lock systems (ecl),when the ignition switch is turned to ?lock,? the ecl prevents turning of the steering system.when the vehicle is started, the ecl unlocks the steering system.the vehicle is designed so that if the column fails to unlock when the vehicle is started and the customer tries to drive, the fuel supply will be shut off so that the vehicle cannot move when the vehicle cannot be steered.the dealership indicated that the consumer's vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.
The present safety recall of late model corvettes to rectifiy a potentially catastrophic steering lock while travelling does not eliminate the safety risk in vehicles equipped with manual transmissions.gm's solution for manual transmission vehicles is to shut off gas to the engine instead of removing the column lock plate (as in the recall for the automatics).the steering on cars equipped with manual transmissions can still lock up while travelling at high speed - even after the gm recall fix.please address this issue - this is still a potentially serious condition that should have been resolved by the recall.
Dt*:the contact stated while making a left hand turn out of a parking lot at 10 mph, the contact lost control of the vehicle.although, the steering wheel was manually adjusted to a straight position, it continued to move to the right.the vehicle then made a 270 degree turn to the left and hit another vehicle.there was no damage or police report taken.the vehicle was towed to the dealership and it was determined the steering linkage failed at the knuckle.a representative from the manufacturer read the black box and determined the failure was caused by the impact with the other vehicle.there is a nhtsa recall, # 04v273000, regarding the steering linkages.the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however, it is not included in the recall due to the vin.
Our corvette convertible had a "rattle" in the back we id as the back window from the convertible top had become separated from the adhesive and fell out into the back of the car. This seems to be a problem that is being handled through the recall.
I have a 2000 chevrolet corvette and a 2004 chevrolet commemorative edition corvette. Both of my vettes have had a roof leak and both cars have the fixed roof. Neither vehicles have ever been wrecked. It has caused mildew on the headliner as well as numerous problems with wiring in the car due to the leak. Because my 2000 corvette had no warranty we fixed the problem ourselves, but my 2004 corvette still is having a problem. I took it to the dealership because it is under warranty but the warranty would not cover the roof leak. I was wondering if there have been other people having the same problem. It seems to coincidental to have the problem on two corvettes.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet corvette.the removable top on the vehicle was loose.while driving over a bump at any speed, the top sounds as if it will detach from the vehicle.the dealer stated that there was no safety recall on the removable top.the vehicle has not been repaired.the failure mileage was 8,100.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet corvette. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for routine maintenance where the contact was informed the fiberglass crossmember bar was cracking and separating. The vehicle was not repaired. Prepurchase recall search.
2004 chevrolet corvette. Consumer writes in regards to malfunction of cruise and traction controls.the consumer stated over the past two months the cruise control would shut off automatically.he would turn it back on and it would work for a very short time and then shut off again. In addition, while driving at a high speeds of 65-70, the consumer felt a slight slow down in the engine and a pull to the right in the steering. Once he turned off the traction control, the problem ceased.

When using telescoping steering wheel the active handling light a came on and the car pulled hard to the left into oncoming traffic lane while driving . I had never used the telescoping sterling wheel feature prior to this .*dt

Going 80 on freeway cruise disingaged active handling warning came on car pulled to the left very scary contacted chevorolet no help there are many more of these same problems reported recall for 2005 for exact same problem.
While driving my 2004 corvette the active handling message come on at the dash and while driving this causes the brakesto pull the car from one side or the other suddenly and this happens very often. I am afraid this could cause the car to have a serious accident.

2004 chevrolet corvette power window regulators keep failing. Window will either not roll down at all, or sometimes the regulator cable will fray and window will partially go down. I have had two regulators on the passenger side and the current one no longer works. And i have just installed the third one on the driver side. This car only has 48,000 mile on it and it is babied. Yet these parts keep failing and the repair cost is $550.00 per incident. 5 regulators in under 50,000 miles seems like a problem to me since i have owned 20 cars in my life and have never had this problem until now.
In october of 2005 the driver side power window ceased to function, and the passenger side operated sporadically. Dealer replaced both window regulators under warranty. Then in february of 2007, the passenger window ceased to function again. Once again this regulator was replaced under warranty. Then in february 2010 the passenger windows ceased to operate again, then may 2010 the driver side window ceased to operate again. The dealer replaced these now at a very significant fee (2.5% the original cost of the vehicle). Therefore in 6 years i went through 7 window regulators, and have talked to other owners of the same vehicle that have had the same experience. The odd part is that i rarely roll either window down.
There was no noticeable reason for the passenger window to fail. I don't have children that would have been playing with the windows to have caused the failure. The passenger window regulator or associated parts just ceased working.in fact i use the driver's side window 5 timesas often as the passenger window, and i have never had a problem. The first time was in 2005,and a few days ago on 5-18-07.
