My son purchased this car in may 2012 and wrecked it in june 2012 while driving to work in the rain. The air bags did not deploy despite his hitting a lamp post and a tree. He was not injured and no other cars were involved. We always wondered why the air bags did not deploy but didn't pursue that because we were just glad no one got hurt. My son never quite understood how the wreck happened and now that we have learned of problems with air bags not deploying in some gm cars, we wonder if there might be a problem that should be investigated with regard to corvettes as well. We got a carfax report on the car before we purchased it and there was no indication that it had been involved in any kind of incident that would have impacted the air bags.

Consumer states steering column locked while driving. As a result vehicle was involved in a crash. Dealer notified.while driving the vehicle steering wheel locked up.as a result the vehicle crossed the median and hit a jeep head on. The jeep caught fire and the consumer's corvette was totaled. The air bags didn't deploy causing consumer to sustain injuries to the head and a sprained ankle for 3 weeks. Consumer lost consciousness for approx. 20 minutes.*ph *nlmduplicate voq. Consumer was traveling 75 mph on the highway and the steering wheel locked up.consumer was unable to maintain control of the vehicle, and it crashed intoguard rail and flipped three times, landingin a ditch.upon impact, both frontal air bags did not deploy.driver sustained head and neck injuries, and was transported to a hospital. Vehicle was towed and totaled.

The hazard switch is faulty.all of the wiring for the brake and turn signals goes through the hazard switch. Every corvette forum details the faulty hazard switch. The vehicle stalled on the freeway.there was negative battery terminal and the cable shorted.the engine over heated while driving due to the cooling hose had blown.on another occasion the engine lost power while driving due to fuel injectors, blown exhaust valves, and the push rod was bent. Mrscc

I experienced loss of control by skidding and almost leaving the road toward a dropoff while applying the brake since the abs, active handling, traction control systems have been malfunctioning at 35mph on a mountain road applying the brake as i was going around a sharp curve i believe the cause of this malfunction of the abs/ah system is a faulty ebcm which is known by countless members of the corvette owners community as a safety issue that should have been recalled a long time ago. If i would have known about this issue without an active recall i would not have bought the car. Several times this has happened in varied situations and i cannot rely on these safety features to save my life if something occurs that would send me out of control into another vehicle or over a steep cliff like in the close call i mentioned earlier in this text. Gm does not value my life as much as i do and this recall would have bankrupted them shortly after 2000. I'm sure there are hundreds of thousands of wrecked corvettes and loss of life due to this failure to recall them so they should be able to afford it 20 years later

Eratic fuel readings, right rear tire sensor keeps going out this was replaced once already. Engine has knocking noise injectors were cleaned did not help. Wind noise from left window. Front right headlamp motor stopped working had to replace. Hud goes out on hot days. Car has on 2 occassions has stopped accelerating car has to be cut off and restarted to solve problem. This vehicle has had many problems mainly electrical.

While driving 5 mph the steering wheel without any warning locked up. Dealer notified.the radio quit, directional switch, power doors/switch, and the door unlatchedwhile the vehicle was in motion and while parked. *scc

Turn signals and hazard lights do not work all the time.when hot they do not work at all.

1. Fuel gauge drops to empty when i have around 1/2 a tank, low fuel light comes on. Have to put gas in to make light go out.i have to use odometer to keep track of how fuel i have used and how far can i go,because this will happen at any time. This happens all the time, every time.2. Turn signals quit working at any time they please. I have to put the 4-ways on for about 5 seconds and then off to make the signals work again.

Unable to unlock steering column after starting engine despite repeated attempts. Intermittently recurring problem. "service steering column lock" fault message appears in vehicle instrument panel display.

After the car was started and i began to drive ,it would shut off the motor and lock the steering wheel. All the lights would work fine, but the steering wheel locked until i came to a stop and would turn off the motor and restart the engine. It was very scary because i could not pull over to the side of the road and restart the motor. I would have to stop in the middle of the road and start it. When i took the car into the dealer they said it was the key and key fob that was pulling the key out of the ignition and had to replace the entire key switch. This cost me $341.28 . I asked about any recalls or other people having the same problem and the reported to me that it is a common occurrence in the corvette. Sounds like what was and is going on now and i think i should be paid back the money i spent by gm.

Dt: the contactowns a 2000 chevrolet corvette. He stated that he parked, went into the grocery store, and when he came back out turned the vehicle on and the steering column would not unlock. He was told that there wasrecall04v060000 on this type of vehicle. But the recall did not include his vehicle. The dealership told him that after doing the diagnostic testit was evident that it had nothing to do with driver'serror. It may have been an electrical failure. The recall stated that it could lock up while driving. The dealership toldhim now that this vehicle was no longer under warranty.the contactwill have to pay for the repairs to be done.

The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated that the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 04v060000 (steering); however, the oem replacement part failed. The vehicle was towed back to the dealer (rick hendrick city chevrolet, 5101 e independence blvd, charlotte, nc 28212, (980) 242-5621) within months due to the ignition locking and the security alarm randomly activating, which caused the vehicle to completely shut down. The vehicle was towed to a second dealer (fred caldwell chevrolet, 974 bethel st, clover, sc 29710, 1-888-692-6546 and 1-803-222-4581). The manufacturer was contacted several times over the years and was aware that various fifth edition vehicles were affected. The manufacturer had not developed a newly designed oem part and expected the contact to have the part replaced a third time. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa action numbers: ea02031 (steering) and pe02054 (steering). The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The failure mileage was not available.

In august 07 my 2000 corvette coupe ebcm failed. The car has only 40,000 miles on it & is only driven on weekends. I am a mechanic by trade. I removed the module & had it rebuilt for $200 since gm quoted me $1300 for a new one. The repairs i made fixed the problem.*updated 12/12/07 the consumer stated the traction control, active handling and abs light illuminated. Updated 12/12/07

Column lock on 200 corvette failed, immobilizing vehicle.this device was subject to several prior recalls, but the replacement's design is still defective.chevrolet dealersaid that the recall has expired, so i had to pay for tow, parts/labor, and time off work.this amounts to nearly $1000.since this is a safety-related design flaw, the recall should be reinstituted and i should be compensated.

While backing out steering locked.vehicle screen indicator read pull key and wait ten seconds.dealer statedelectrical switch needed to be replaced.

The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated unless the turn signals are being used, it is impossible for an operator to know when they are operable. The intermittent failure of the turn signals and hazards has been occurring for a few years. The frequency of the failures has increased and the failure duration has lengthened . Initially, the failure lasted for only a few seconds. The solution the contact discovered was to punch the hazard lights button a couple of times and this would somehowcause the turn signals to start operating. The problem was due to age and wear as well as bad parts.the headlights, window motors and driver's seat motor have all been replaced. The failure mileage was approximately 82,500. Electronic module for the automatic door locks failed.consumer was concerned that he or other occupants would be trapped if doors failed again. The vehicle's battery failed.when the battery was recharged it caused the power locks on the on the left side of the vehicle to fail.

2000 chevrolet corvette.consumer writes in regards to vehicle ignition problems.the consumer stated after the vehicle was purchased new in 2000, he had numerous problems with the ignition switch, on a random basis, but were not constant. On occasion, it would not start when the key was turned, and he would have to keep trying, until it did start. Sometimes it would shut off on its own. The vehicle was taken to 3 different dealers, who said the could not help him unless the vehicle exhibited the problem, while in the shop. It wasn't until 3 years ago, when the ignition switch, became a regular problem, with starting and stopping and causing the steering wheel to lock up. There were times, when the engine would not shut off, after the key was removed. He disconnected the battery, hoping that resolve it, but it did not. There were times when the vehicle would shut off, while driving.

The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet corvette.the contact stated that the doors would not lock from the door panel, only from the key remote.secondly, the ten second key delay began to activate and the horn blew out.while the mechanic was repairing the horn, the vehicle went into column lock.the repairs have been made, but the contact is concerned that the steering column may lock while driving.a relay harness was removed from the vehicle and he does not believe it should have been removed.the purchase date was unknown.the current mileage was 54,410 and failure mileage was 54,011.

In early april i had a recall work completed on my 2000 corvette done by buss cheverolet of shawano, a couple of months later the recall work failed, so parson's chevy of antigo, we redid the recall work.now on 08-27-07 the recall work failed again!this will be the third time in less than 6 months i will have to have recall work done on my car for the column lock failure.this problem is well known to owners of c5 body style corvettes and most of these owners go and purchase their own bypass so it gets fixed correctly.everyone i have spoken to indicates that when the dealership completes the work according to general motors direction the recall work always fail!when will general motors get it right?i shouldn't have to take my car into the dealership 3 times to have recall work done, especially when its a nhtsa ordered recall!

Ac drain clogs causing computer failure, engine failure, and vents to totally fog windows. Almost caused serious highspeed accident on interstate. This has clogged 5 times on my corvette.many other corvette owners are having the same problem. Someone will get killed if this keeps happening. Gm has not helped a bit.they can't seem to keep the ac drain lines from getting clogged on these cars.the ac plenum fills with water as you drive, and then starts dripping on the floorboard computers and fries them.

The pcm reports error p1518, but is intermittent (thus it has not been taken in yet intil it is more predictable -ie solvable) the real problem is the pcm reduces engine to idle until a power cycle - very dangerous, but as i have found out before intermittent failures can not easily be diagnosed - should be a check to return power if the failure is gone for a time.

The traction control and abs system does dot work because the abs module has failed and there are no after market repairs or parts.

Warning light indicator came on for service traction system and service active handling system and will not reset.no replacement parts are available and dealer has no fix for this problem other than to remove the fuses associated with these systems.

Another recall needs to be done on the 97-2004 c5 corvette. Many many people also complaining the abs lights and the traction control warning lights come on by themselves and disable the abs brakes and the traction control while driving which in the rain or snow is a huge problem. The really hugeissue is you cant even fix it at a shop. The part that goes bad which is the abs module in front of the engine is no longer made. When gm went on strike, the company that made the abs/traction module for these cars went bankrupt. So i am driving around with a car with no abs and no traction control in bad weather that would and will cause an accident. This needs a recall on it as well as the steering column which i already filed a complaint on that also. A car with 55,000 should not be doing things like this. Been happening since i had 42,000 on it and is still doing it now every single day today.

Warning lights in dash alerted me to the active handling/traction control not working. This is the second failure of the ebtcm module. Called the gm dealer for the module only to find out is it no longer available & there is no alternative or replacement available. I am currently driving the car with the fuse pulled to render the safety braking system inoperative.

The abs light and traction control are non-functioning. Chevrolet dealer advised the problem is the electronic brake control module. Chevrolet discontinued the part and no parts are available. I was advised they can not fix this issue and my car will simply not have abs or traction control functionality anymore. Hard for me to believe chevrolet cant be held responsible to provide parts to repair their own cars for a feature such as abs systems.

The "service traction control" and "service active handling" messages appeared on my dash each time the traction control or abs brakes were engaged on my 2000 chevrolet corvette.eventually, the message appeared immediately upon placing the key in the ignition. I had my local shop diagnose the problem. The abs pump was tested and checked out fine. The chevrolet manuals said to replace the ebtcm (electrical brake traction control module).i called fred beans chevrolet and they advised me that gm discontinued the part and no replacement is available.i tried sending the module to private companies for repair, but after two tries and $800 spent, the module was not repairable.i am extremely disappointed that my 11-year old high performance vehicle is without abs brakes, traction control and active handling (corrects the vehicle in the event of a rear wheel spin).these are extremely important safety features for such a light and powerful car. Many other c5 owners have complained on corvetteforum.com that they have similar trouble and no recourse.

Electronic braking control module intermittently fails to function giving the error service traction control system\anti-braking system. No parts are available to repair car. Could cause loss of control while braking or steering car.

The abs and traction control sys. Fail in all of these cars. Gm does not provide a fix or replacement part for the 99-2000 ebcm which means i have to drive my car without needed safety features required by the state of va to pass vehicle state inspection. The majority of 99-2000 corvettes are driving around without abs and traction control because of lack of support from gm. This is an issue that needs to be resolved.

I was driving on a main street this summer at about 40 mph and put on the brakes and they lock up, my car when sideways at 40 mph, very lucky know one was hurt!! went to the dealer to have the car checked out and was told the ebcm was bad and there was no fix for it !!! so now i and i'm sure a lot of others have a very unsafe and dangerous vehicle that chevrolet seems to have no obligation to supply a repair for. You would think nhtsa would step on and force chevrolet to resolve this issue , or is it going to take a death to make someone act ?

I constantly get abs tcs warning lights on the dash board. Diagnosed as a bad ecbm but gm has discontinued the part ! there are no companies that can repair this years (2000) ecbm and no used ones to be found .neither the abs or the tcs is functional while lights are on . Dangerous and frustrating. At different speeds and while stationary

Steering column locked while car was in motion at approx 15 mph. The problem turned out to be a known issue and was repaired by gm under recall by colonial chevrolet-buick, inc. Of talladega alabama. Days later the same thing happened again, column locking while in motion, even though gm said the recall would prevent this dangerous malfunction from happening again. Furthermore in the process of performing the recall service, colonial chevrolet-buick, inc. Damaged and replaced the car's radiator. Upon further inspection i found that the radiator was not reinstalled properly and its housing is broken. I am unaware of what possible dangers may be present due to the improperly positioned radiator, and have discontinued use of the vehicle pending further investigation in this matter and the column locking again. Following service, the car was driven to a tire shop at colonial's recommendation and then straight home. -the contact stated that he had a problem with smelling fumes fromthe 2000 chevrolet corvette.when approaching thevehicle he couldsmell the fumes coming from the vehicle.the contact stated that he was informed by the service mechanic at jn chevrolet, that the right exhaust pipe was too close to fuel tank which causedthe tank to heat up and expand, and thatcaused the smell of gasoline.the contact has had 3 repairs done to the vehicle because of these fumes.they replaced thefuel cap, and the o2 sensor.the contactfoundout that he neededthe fuel tank replaced on 10/20/06.the contact stated that the dealershiporderedthe tank at that time, and as of 2/16/07 had not received the fuel tank.the contact had called the dealership on a number of occasions ,and they continue to tell him the tank hadn't arrived.the contactcalled the manufacturer and they informed the contact that it shouldn't have taken this long. The current mileage was 40000.

The consumer noticed that the gas gauge indicated that it needed fuel. However, the vehicle had fuel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection. The mechanic informed the consumer that the sending unitneeded to be replaced.

This car has been nothing but problems, steering has locked on me 2 times which i was late for work both times, and is a saftey concern , what if i was in a bad area to be stuck??? the dealer says nothing is wrong with the car but when checking the nhtsa.gov sites there are tons of cars with the same problems.chevrolet has gotten rid of the steering lock in 2001 and 2002 why is that because it doesnt operate correctly.the tire pressure was always off on each tire.my fuel gauge is always wrong. Not to include my engine ticks very loud and the dealer says nothing is wrong with that there is also oil leakage and consumption problem.i just want my $50k car fixed.if this does not get resolved i will have to take this a step futher and review legal options.thank you. 1) steering column lock issue2) fuel cut off** was driving with my 12 year old daughter . Stopped for gas 65 miles from home and at 11pm. After getting gas i went to start car would not turn over / start. After several tries it finally started but information center above steering column said "service steering columnlock" and would not allow me to drive more than 2 mph before shutting off fuel and killing the motor from running. Had corvette towed to my office. Finally got home at 2:30 am. Called chevy dealer, was told that it had a recall that pertained to the problem , recall done in 2007 and that even though it was the same problem the chevy dealer would not fix it again even though i told them the recall had not been completed because the steering lock plate was still installed and the recall specifically stated the dealer was to remove the steering lock plate. Said nothing they could do and estimated it to be $900 to $1200 to fix. Said to call recall center which said "tuff luck" car still not running. I don't know why they said the recall fixed the problem just to have the same problem and say " i " have to pay to fix this time even though it is the same problem as before the recall ? are they kidding me ? help !!!

While traveling on trips 21/2 hours or more my low fuel light comes on and it appears to be out of gas, the indicator shows empty, but it is not.after reporting to the chevrolet dealerships service manager he informed me that this was a technical issue already noted but not a recall issue yet. I was told it was a sensor.i fill this needs to be a recall on this issue, we have spoken to other corvette owners and they are having the same problem with their vette.does this warrant a recall?

Fuel gauge inaccuracy. I have to depend on the miles left until tank has an empty gauge. When all fuel gauges get to about 1/4 tank (on the console and the hood), it will drop to empty setting off low fuel alarms. Gauge has been repaired 3 times and continues to have the problem. *la

Consumer complained that the vehcile fuel gauge was reading a quarter of tank of fuel when the vehicle shut off while driving. Dealer notified.

Fuel gauge drops to empty when fuel gauge reads 1/2 tank to 1/4 tank.

When driving for about an hour the alarm went off, andfuel gauge dropped to zero, as if the vehicle did not have gas in it. It happened intermittently. However, consumer consulted with chrysler. They stated that it was not a safety defect, and that nothing would be done about it. However, the problem continued.

Fuel gauge inaccuracy.when fuel gauge gets to about 1/4 tank, it will drop to empty setting off low fuel alarms.gauge was repaired 9/24/02.again on 11/29/02 it happened again.the same components (sending units) were replaced for the second time.i am a member of corvetteforum.com and see this problem has been on going since 1997 when the c-5 corvette was introduced.it is still happening on the 2003 models with one owner having it occur at 800 miles on a 2003 model.can't get chevrolet to repair the problem so it won't come back.chevroletdoesn't seem to have a fix for the problem after 7 years of building the c-5!i need some help in getting this issue resolved before my warranty expires in april 2003. When i start my car the gas leaks out of the rear driver side onto the ground below the car.

This vehicle has 30,000 mi. Just started noticing fuel smell coming from right rear side after parking inside my garage. Can't see any leaks on the floor, yet concerning !

My 2000 corvette fuel leaks, not to sure from where. My garage has very strong fume odor. Sometimes when i am driving it the odor is unbearable

I have a fuel leak coming from right behind the fuel filter towards the top of the passenger fuel tank. This is creating a fuel vapor smell and a safety hazard .

I have a message on my dashboard stating "service steering column lock".this message triggers a fuel shutoff at 2 mph. Luckily this happened to me as i was pulling out of my driveway. I dread to imagine the consequences of this happening if i had been driving at speed on a highway or busy street.

Vehicle had the following problems; removable top squeaked, driver's side exterior door handle was loose, right front turn signal failed, excess oil, and steering/ignition interlock recall. Also delco battery cable leaked acid, control light malfunctioned.

Passenger power door lock does not unlock. The lock does lock, but in order to unlock the passenger door it must be done manually or by the key hole outside.because of the new updated lock versions both actuators on the driver side door lock and passenger side door lock must be replaced in order for both locks to function together. Estimated cost to replace locks $1200.

The abs tcs system on my 2000 corvette has malfunctioned.i've been told that this can't be repaired.after researching this seems to be a chronic problem on this vehicle.my corvette only has 49000 miles on it and this is a serious safety issue involving control of the vehicle during an emergency braking condition, especially on wet roads.

Rear end chatter noises when turning at low speeds, gm change rearend fluid and added friction modifier and no correction made to problem. Now saying it needs new posi clutch packs replaced but no warranty to correct problem

Recall 04v060000, while reversing at low speeds vehicle stalled.dealershipwould not repair the vehiclebecause the vin was not included.

The consumer felt that the remedy for the automatic transmission electronic column lock 04v060000 recall is making it easier for the vehicle to be stolen.when the column lock plate is removed only the transmission shifter is locked.the shifter can be easily unlocked, and without the assistance of the steeringlock, the vehicle wasn't secured from theft.the vehicle would like a new remedy found to correct this failure without deactivating the electronic column lock system.*sc

Transmission fluid leaked from vehicle, rendering vehicle inoperable.dealer has inspectedvehicle, and will replace transmission. Manufacturer has been notified.

Tire pressure gauge always low, would not show if tires too low or over inflated until too late at any speed.abs/active handling system light on, turned engine off 1 mile later light goes off.clutch pedal too stiff.

Differential seizes and makes noise at speeds up to 50 mph.could result in total lockup and loss of control of vehicle.

The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated that the driver's side seat belt failed to latch. The contact mentioned that when the seat belt would latch, it would unlatch independently. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact was made aware of nhtsa action number: ea00009 (seat belts). The failure mileage was unknown.

Seat belt failed. *et

Re: nhtsa campaign number 00v111000 chevrolet tells me there is no recall. My belts continue to fail. What can i do?

Vehicle is experiencing the exact same problems as mentioned in manufacturer'srecall10461.lap belt webbing can twist, allowingwebbing to jam in the retractor.dealer has replaced the seatbelt with the problem on the passenger side, but not the driver's side.also, did not install inserts to the belt web guide of each lap belt retractor.

Driver's side shoulderbelt is over lapping and won't retract. A consumer had the vehicle inrepair shop three times for repairs, and the dealer couldn't determine thecause.driving at any speed and applying the brakes, the steering wheel is jumping out of the consumer's hand.

While getting in my vehicle, the seats have an auto adjust memory function. However, while driving down the road, after pulling out of my driveway, on at least 5 occasions, my seats began to move backwards away from the pedals and steering wheel and i'm a rather short lady. This scared me to death!

Seats move back and foth on acceleration and braking.

Seat frame breakage - separation of seat from frame. The seat frame in my 2000 corvette broke, causing the seat to separate from the frame and seat track. The seat dropped approximately one inch when it broke. The incident could result in loss of control of the vehicle. In a search of corvetteforum.com, i found that several other owners have experienced the same failure. Gm is aware of the problem but has taken no action to correct the problem. If you investigate the seat design, you will find that the seat frame and attachment mechanism to the seat sliders are very thin and do not appear up to their designed task. *la

I have 22,000 miles on my 200 corvette.the passenger side seat is loose and moves when i drive.the dealer is saying that i havhe to replace the entire adjuster for around $1000.

When turning off the car driver seat will move all the way forward, smashing the driver against the steering wheel.

I was leaving my house to go to work and when i got to the busy street, there was complete and total brake failure.i ended up running over a curb and hitting some trees to stop my car.i had aaa tow my car to a mechanic's shop and he tried working on it for about a week to ten days and could not figure out why i had no brakes at all.he said the abs system seems to be malfunctioning, but it shouldn't leave me without any brakes.he said he thought it was a safety issue and that gm would need to be notified about this and he urged me to send my car to a gm dealership to take care of the issue.i had aaa tow my car to bob stall chevrolet in la mesa, ca and they verified that the abs system was fried and that i would need to replace the unit.when i asked if gm would help with the cost of the replacement since it was a safety issue, they said i would have to call gm customer service.i did and they said they wouldn't be able to assist because the dealership was telling them that the car had brakes and worked fine when they got it.now i am seriously concerned with the safety of my car and the brakes and the fact that if the abs goes out or fries, that i might possibly not have brakes at all.my car has been at the dealership for almost a month now and they still haven't been able to fix it yet.

I read in the newspaper today that the government is taking action against general motors for the ignition key problem.i experienced a similar problem with my corvette.the engine will shut off while in gear and in motion, disabling power steering, brakes and the ability to move the car out of the way.a message "service steering column lock" appears.the car has been recalled for this problem and has been repaired several times.this has been done long after the warranty expired at no cost to me.last year the problem occurred again in melbourne near the vette doctor corvette repair shop.the dealer i bought the car from, fischer in titusville was not a chevrolet dealer anymore.the car was repaired for about $800 and i contacted gm and was told to make a claim at the bob steeledealership in cocoa.the claim was rejected.gm had continued to fix the problem and one time when i was in sarasota i was reimbursed for rental car expenses to get home, this was when the car was seven years old.i would like to get help with my expenses.

The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated that the abs and traction control indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. The dealer stated that the bpmv needed to be replaced along with other unknown failures. The manufacturer stated that the part needed for the repair was discontinued. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 25,000. Updated 09/17/14*lj updated 02/3/2015

The traction control and abs system does dot work because the abs module has failed and there are no after market repairs or parts.

The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated that the abs and traction control warning lights illuminated on the instrumental panel. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for a diagnosis. The mechanic stated the electronic control module needed to be replaced however, the part was discontinued. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 38,000. The vin was not available.

I was leaving to go to work and was idling out of the parking lot to the stop sign before i pulled out onto a very busy and dangerous street.the stop sign was at the bottom of a small hill, so no need for gas because idling and gravity would get me to the stop sign.i had no brakes at all!my brakes were in good condition and not due for any maintenance previous to this event. I rolled right out onto the busy street without the ability to stop.i immediately took the next street off the busy road and crashed into some shrubbery to stop my car.i called aaa and my insurance company and had the car towed to my mechanic.he didn't understand that i literally had no brakes.he almost hit the wall of his repair shop because it wouldn't stop.he emphatically stated that, "no matter what, your mechanical brakes should have worked, even if the abs was malfunctioning."he took the fuses out and my mechanical brakes started working again. He took a quick look and let me know right away that the abs module had fried.he said it was a serious safety issue and to take it to the dealership to have them document the problem and take it from there.i had it towed to the bob stall chevrolet dealership in la mesa, california.they verified that the module was fried but they would not comment on the brake situation.they just kept insisting that they couldn't duplicate the problem and the brakes worked fine when the car came in.they kept my car for about two months and then finally told me that the part that i needed was no longer made and they wouldn't be able to repair my car.i don't understand how that could happen and neither does anyone else that i talk to, but i do have a witness who drove the car right afterwards and who can attest to the fact that i had no brakes at all.

The ebcm traction control module , abs control modules and the steering wheel position sensor for the c5 corvettes made from 1997 thru 2000 are no longer manufactured by general motors or licensed to an after market manufacturer for production as an after market replacement. When these modules go bad there is a risk for accidents or death while driving as the abs system that works in conjunction withthese modules will lock up one or more of the brakescausing the driver to swerve into other lanes. This happened to me when my steering wheel position sensor failed.we corvette owners are forced to drive with the traction control off because we cannot find new replacement ebcm modules, absmodules of steering wheel position sensors . Our only recourse is to buy a used unit from a totaled 1997 thru 2000 corvette at high prices andthe are also defective at times according to corvette fprum members. General motors continues to license after market manufacturers to make replacement ebcm modules, afbs modules and steering wheel position sensors for corvettes manufactured in 2001 thru 2004 so why can't the license an after market auto part manufacturer to make these sensors for 1997 thru 2000 corvettes? can the us government force gm to make these parts for the 1997 thru 2000 corvette due to fact that these parts are vital for the 1997 thru 2000 corvette to be safe on the road??

I was driving on a main street this summer at about 40 mph and put on the brakes and they lock up, my car when sideways at 40 mph, very lucky know one was hurt!! went to the dealer to have the car checked out and was told the ebcm was bad and there was no fix for it !!! so now i and i'm sure a lot of others have a very unsafe and dangerous vehicle that chevrolet seems to have no obligation to supply a repair for. You would think nhtsa would step on and force chevrolet to resolve this issue , or is it going to take a death to make someone act ?

The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet corvette. While drivingapproximately 65 mph, the contact stated the rear tires disconnected from the vehicle causing the contact to lose control. The contact also stated the traction control and the abs warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a dealer fordiagnostic testing. The technician stated the abcm module and the left front wheel bearing needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the abcm module not being available. The approximate failure and current mileage were 12,000.

The hazard switch is faulty.all of the wiring for the brake and turn signals goes through the hazard switch. Every corvette forum details the faulty hazard switch. Because of the poor quality of the part, and the poor design of the electrical system, if the hazard switch malfunctions, there are no brake lights, and/or no turn signals or hazard lights. There is no indication that the switch is malfunctioning until another motorist notifies you verbally or by crashing into you, or perhaps if law enforcement pulls you over for it.

My 2000 corvette coupe's abs system became inoperative, and despite the safety aspect of this failure, gm has done nothing to repair, assist people who would like to repair -- or at least give notice of available repairers --to the large and growingnumber of owners whose abs systems have stopped working.gm's position is that the abs module was manufactured by delco which is now o/o business, and that they have no interest or responsibility for in any way dealing w/the matter."go fly a kite" is hardly the position gm should be permitted to take when there are now thousands of corvette 00 and earlier models who receive no help, and can do nothing to repair, reprogram, purchase or otherwise provide abs braking. There's not a corvette repair facility unaware of the problem, and none can do anything but tell their customers to check w/craig's list or junkyards in the hope of getting the module.even the website absfixer.com that largely exists because of gm abs system breakdowns can't help; it can only repair post-2001 modules.no member of the "corvette forum" site -- an active group of highly sophisticated corvette owners -- can help.some of gm's most active parts people have called high level gm officials, and beside the "go fly a kite" response, they were given web sites that, when called, make clear that they can't help.finally:on friday, by sheer accident, i may have found a person able to repair the modules -- if he can, he's the only person in the world who can do so.but my question is this: why do people like me have to hunt down possible repairers for hours?why isn't gm obligated to provide technical assistance to people who would like to repair safety-oriented parts like abs modules. And, at a minimum, why isn't gm required to use best efforts to search for repair information and relay it totheir parts and repair people?[note:i've heard that the same problem may exist for other gm cars and trucks.]

Ebcm failure, no traction control, no abs. Gm no longer makes parts! ebcm is not repairable. Becoming a real problem with 1997-200 corvettes.

I own, as do 75 other customers of tony's corvette shop in maryland, a 2000 c-5 corvette. ( currently 32,000 miles)the abs/traction control module for this vehicle has been discontinued by gm. My module as well as the other owners has failed and is no longer available for replacement. Further operation of these vehicles invites safety related ramifications as they will not perform as designed for safe operation. The shop owner searched across the nation and there are no replacements available. Why has gm failed to meet the safety needs of the public for its vehicles?

At normal hwy. Speed(65 - 70 ) i am loosing the safety of my abs and traction control. This is due to manufactures fault in the ebcm (electronic brake control module ). This could lead to an handling issue!

Vehicles brakes locked up, causing severe flat spot on tires. This should be a safety concern, as the car is nearly uncontrollable at the time of lockup. This vehicle was driven from the manufacturers plant in bowling green, ky to lyman, sc, approximately 400 miles, by way of nashville, tn. It sat in the garage the following week. The next weekend, the brakes locked up. Taken to the chevrolet dealership the following monday, it remained there for two full weeks while they repaired the abs system. While at the dealership, the system again failed after the first attempts to repair were unsuccessfull. The second attempt required parts that were to be back ordered. The parts were located at the corvette plant, however, and the repairs made. The vehicles brake system now appears to be normal. The last part of the brake system, the tires, have not been repaired at this time. Only a "good will offer" of $75has been offered, towards the cost of $1600 worth of tires, on a $46,000 car.

Have failure of abs system on 2000 corvette. Appears to be related to failure of the ebcm. Not repaired at this time due to $1800.00 plus cost. Currently the cars abs and traction control system has been disabled by the cars computer.

I am writing this complaint about a known faulty component within the c5 chevrolet corvettes. This part, the ebcm, causes the loss of abs and tcs. This failure is a known problem and has happened to many c5 corvette owners. In fact, gm even has a policy known as he goodwill policy in which they will randomly offer discounts to corvette owners. Some will receive the discount and others will not. When we had the car diagnosed at a chevrolet dealership as directed by gm officials we were told that they wouldn't replace the part due to the number of miles on the car. This problem had originally occurred when the car had around 30,000 miles on it, appearingto be an intermittent problem, and then after months of driving the faults would not reset. The individuals at gmsaidthat they knew there was a problem, but they would replace the part on case by case basis. The individual at gm claimedthat he contacted the technician at james woods and was told that the part failure was normal, and that the part failed at around 60,000 miles. There weremany failures with less miles than that. My problem wasn't the fact that they wouldn't offer any discount, but the fact that there was a known problem that affectedthe safety of drivers, and they will not act to correct the problem. . i am a frequent poster on the following website and you could verify that there wa s indeed a known problem with the ebcm. The website was corvetteforum.com. If you perform d a search on the website under the c5 section you will see that there weremany cases of individuals who have experienced this problem. I couldnot give an accurate account of any accidents or deaths due to this problem, but i do know that the impact was extremely high or that the possibility of an accident due to absence of abs wasextremely high.

S10 appropriate handling- letter to the secretary from constituent re copy of a letter to general motors chief executive office mary barra regarding a safety issue with a chevrolet corvette.the consumer stated the abs module failed. The only way to deal with the problem, was to find a used one for as much as 1,500 to $2,000 because the part was not available. No one can repair the module, because it was filled with resin.

Vehicle with failure - my 2000 chevrolet corvette 2d hardtop 6mtmileage - 35,972 (after accident)(1)panic stop in center lane of congested traffic.driver applies brakes with maximum effort and clutch is disengaged.impact with the rear of the vehicle ahead was avoidable given the initial velocity and distance for separation.(2) driver feels a noticeable "pop" through the brake pedal and with maximum effort applied, the pedal drops quickly to the vehicle floor.the brake system up to this point had decreased vehicle speed to at most 10 mph.driver maintains pedal effort but the remaining momentum causes an impact with the vehicle ahead due to the nearly 100% loss of brake performance.post-impact driving and inspection leads to the discovery ofa ruptured flexible braided hose, 1 of 2 hoses routed along the driver-side frame rail, adjacent to the front driver-side of the engine.these two hoses connect the steel tubing from the master cylinder to the abs controller and are permanently attached to the steel tubing.(3) the complete brake tubing and hose assembly (with the ruptured hose) from master cylinder to abs controller was replaced with a new assembly by the dealership service department.the failed component, despite the vehicle owner requesting otherwise, was not kept for further inspection.digital pictures and video are available from immediately after the accident.the dealership service department diagnosed the cause of the rupture as abrasion between frame rail and hose.

I don't know why they said the recall fixed the problem just to have the same problem and say " i " have to pay to fix this time even though it is the same problem as before the recall ? are they kidding me ? help !!!

The contact owns 2000 chevrolet corvette.the contact stated that the repairs for recall nhtsa campaign id number 04v060000 (steering) were performed. However, the dealer only reprogrammed the software and failed to replaced the steering wheel lock motor.the vehicle was taken back to the dealer.the manufacturer was made aware of the problem who informed the contact that he would be responsible for the repairs. The vehicle was not repaired.the failure mileage was 35,200. Updated 11/14/14 updated 8/11/2015

I own a 2000 corvette. I stopped to fuel up the vehicle. When i got back in and started the vehicle i received a warning on my dash to service the steering column lock. This of course locked the steering wheel so it could not be turned at all. I had to have it towed to a dealer. I researched this problem and found there have been several recalls on this issue. The dealer claims the item shows it has been repaired in 2004. However the fix in 2004 did not actual repair the problem so in 2006 another recall was issued for this same complaint on the vette. I have only had the vehicle for two years so the repair was supposedly done before i purchased it. If the recall had been repaired properly i would not be having this problem again. The dealer and chevy are telling me that since this repair has already been done the recall no longer exists for my vehicle. Yet the problem still exists. This is a safety issue the chevy is more than aware of. If this would have occurred while driving i or someone i hit could have been seriously injured. How can they close a recall that has never been repaired properly.

These c5 corvettes had a gm recall for the steering column locking up on it. I had the recall done. My car still has a steering column issue with it. The service steering column warning lights still come on intermittently and when they do, the car disables itself and will not go over 2 mph and shuts the fuel pump off. I installed another temp fix called an lmc5 for it. I still get the pull key wait 10 seconds warning lights and service steering column. Gm did a temp fix and never fixed it. When driving the car it will shut itself off because of the steering column warning. The 97-2004 need many recalls not just this one. I am filling out another incident report on it after this one.

Steering column is locked, the wheel will not turn and the motor dies if the vehicle moves. Previous recall for other corvettes same model year and from the same plant but recalls stop prior to the vin number of this vehicle. Occurred after restarting the parked vehicle. Vehicle was parked in a lot at a shopping center.

I understand nhtsa is authorized to order manufacturers to recall and repair vehicles with serious safety defects in the design. I have also been told that the "column lock recall" on many years of the chevy corvette is a government mandated recall that there is no expiration of gm responsibility to fix the problem with this recall. I own a 2000 chevy corvette which i bought second handed in 2006 from a chevy dealer in my area. There had been a recall on this car for the column lock before i purchased it and i was unaware of it or i would not have purchased it because of the seriousness of this issue which the car shuts down completely regardless whether you are at 0 mph or 60 mph. I feel i was sold this vehicle as a way to just pass this issue on to someone else. My first encounter with this issued started three years ago which was three years after i bought it. We took it to the dealer not knowing about the before recall and had it repaired at a charge of $1,700. After i found out about the recall i questioned the dealer and they said it was not their responsibility. Within a years time same issue recurred so this time i reached out to gm and they stood behind it and told the dealership to fix it at no charge. I just went through this same issue again for the third year in a row this time costing us $1,300. If there is no expiration to general motors responsibility to fix the recall problem why is it coming out of my wallet. Furthermore this is a serious safety defect and i cannot understand how a manufacturer can continue to produce these cars year after year with this same issue. Someone needs to see that something is done before someone is killed if they haven't been already.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet corvette. The vehicle was included and repaired under the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 04v060000 (steering:column locking:anti-theft device). After the repair, the contact was driving approximately 5 mph when the steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for a diagnostic test. The technician stated that the recall repair would have to be performed a second time, but the contact would be responsible for the cost of repair.the repairs were performed, but the failure recurred. The manufacturer covered the second repairs under warranty. The failure occurred a third time. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

There was a recall on the steering lock column on my 2000 chevy corvette. I purchased my car in 2003 and the car had 10,000 miles. I still had the warranty on it. In 2005 my steering column locked up and would not start. I had it towed in to kelley chevorlet. They told me there was a recall on the lock system. They replaced the harness and loke plate and actuator. Few months down the road it happened again. I had it towed again they fixed it again and did the same thing. It happened again and they replaced the same parts again...the last time it was there. But this time they took the lock plate out completely, they said that gm told them to do it to fix the recall..now its july 08 and again it had to be towed in and they replaced the same parts again and now they want me too pay 1100.00...so they had it there 4 times in the past 4 years... I purchased this ar with a lok system in it nd i don't understand what gives them the right to rig it bye taken the whole loks system out. I paid 32,000 for my car when i purchased it. I don't understand how they get away with charging me 1100.00 dollars that they changed the recall part 4 times. I put this on my credit card because they would not give me my car until i paid for it, this was a recall problem to begin with and they never fixed it properly, so why do i have to pay for it now.

Steering locked up while driving 65-70 mph, vehicle struck pole in median and spun out. No injuries, damage to vehicle was $ 1000.00.

Went to drive my 200 corvette coupe home and there was no power to the vehicle. During the towing operation the tow truck driver could not move the steering wheel despite the key being in the ignition and in the on position. Many attempts were made to try to free the steering wheel without success. Car had to be dragged onto the tow truck with the front wheels off to the side 20 degrees. This vehicle was recalled in 2004 for the same type of problem and the dealer indicated that the recalled issue was successfully addressed in 2004.the dealer claimed the steering column cam, lock and retainer were all defective and needed replacement. Had the car been moving and the steering locked up it would have been a catastrophic failure.

The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet corvette.while driving less than 55 mph, the steering column failed.the vehicle was taken to the nearest dealer and they stated that the vehicle had been previously repaired incorrectly according to nhtsa campaign id number 04v060000 (steering:column locking:anti-theft device).upon further investigation by the dealer, it was discovered that the initial recall remedy was surpassed and the pieces needed to complete the recall were missing.the dealer from where the vehicle was purchased informed the contact that he could return the vehicle for a full refund.the failure and current mileages were less than 53,000.

The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated that steering column seized as soon as the vehicle was started. The vehicle was towed to an independent auto mechanic who informed the contact that the steering column lock plate would need to be replaced. In 2001, the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign id number was 04v060000 (steering:column locking:anti-theft device). The technician also stated that the previous recall repair was not performed properly. The vehicle was repaired for the most recent failure. The manufacturer was notified of the problem. The approximate failure mileage was 87,000.

The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet corvette. Months after the vehicle was repaired per nhtsa campaign number: 04v060000 (steering), the steering wheel seized, the vehicle stalled, and an error message indicated to remove the key. The vehicle was able to restart and was towed to parks chevrolet (103 robert smalls pkwy, beaufort, sc 29906, (843) 525-4100) where it was diagnosed that the steering wheel security system was defective. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure persisted. Driving down rt 2 in ct with cruise set on 65 when a "active handling" failure code just popped up on the instrument panel (very first time ever) and then the back right brake was activated skewing the car immediately to the right. I recovered the car and slowly drove it home with the code still displayed. I brought the car to the corvette center and they told me that the steering wheel sensor failed and suggested i do not drive the car. They also told me that general motors does not make a replacement sensornor do any aftermarket companies! they also told me that with the steering wheel sensor failure the vehicles brakes, either all or individually, could be applied any time i drive the car by the car's computer thus creating a various dangerous condition. I telephoned general motors chevrolet division and the representative i spoke with apologized about the vehicles behavior and then confirmed there "was a problem" but couldn't help me as there are no replacement parts available to repair the vehicle. It is totally ridiculous to design a vehicle that incorporates an internal component that is absolutely crucial to the safety of the vehicle, occupants, and all those around it and not supply a replacement part thus rendering the vehicle "grounded" forever.

In 2002 my corvette was taken to a well known dealership for repair of the locked steering column (per a recall notice). The steering column has locked again. I only drive the car on occasion.when taken to the dealership in 20002, i had 14,901 miles at present, i have 17,000+ miles. Is it possible to have the locked steering column repaired again free of cost. I have a copy of the paper-work for the repair. It is a bit faded after all these years. You can, however, make out information on the recall with a corresponding recall no. Of 01044. The vehicle was stationary at the time of discovering that the steering column was locke once again.

The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet corvette. While starting the ignition, the steering wheel seized and a warning light illuminated. In addition, the steering unlocked. The failure recurred on a separate occasion; however, the steering failed to unlock. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the steering wheel motor would need to be replaced. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 04v060000 (steering). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.

The consumer noticed after the vehicle was started that the steering wheel would not turn left or right.after the engine ran for a few seconds it would stall.

Called chevrolet about campaign nhtsa id # 04v060000, action # ea02031 involving steering column locks up due to malfunction in anti theft device. Chevrolet indicated they performed recall already by reprogram of module controlling that problem and would take no further action even though the exact same problem is occurring. I indicated that a simple additional reprogramming of the said module would more than likely solve the problem and they indicated it had been done and would not be able to help.

Takata recall - steering column lock issue

Steering column locked and will not unlock. Car cannot be driven and cuts off.vehicle was parked in the driveway when trying to turn the key and unlock the steering wheel.

I purchased a 2000 chevy corvette, vin # [xxx], with less than 12,000 miles on it on 31 may 2011.on july 19, i entered and started the car and as i was backing out of my garage into my driveway, the steering wheel locked.i stopped to avoid hitting my truck, parked in the driveway and pulled forward into the garage and shut-down.later that day i became aware of a safety recall affecting the car, the first, v0743, dealt with the electronic column lock (ecl) and that had been complied with.i also became aware of nhtsa campaign 04v060000 and the mandate to remove the lock plate mechanism from the car to prevent the situation that happened to me.today, 20 july, i became aware that gms response to this issue was to issue a safety bulletin, not a recall, in feb 2006 that expired in feb 2008.currently i have a gm car that is unsafe to drive, a known material safety problem from the factory and known solution, and gm unwilling to fix the vehicle (at their cost) because it didn't happen to me between feb 2006 and feb 2008.a gm case file has been opened, rep # 71-698-549-092 but all indications are leading me to believe that i?lol be responsible for the towing of my vehicle and all repairs.i did not know safety recalls and campaigns were only valid for 2 years.any assistance in this matter would be greatly appreciated.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Gm corvette 2000 steering wheel and column locked . The vehicle was towed to the dealer for repair .about two years later the problem recurred.the consumer contacted the dealer and was told at that time that his vehicle was not included in the steering recall.the consumer had to payfor the repair.

On 7/5/2010 when starting my 2000 chevrolet corvette the steering column would not unlock.i tried several ways to get it unlocked including unhooking the battery as my chevrolet dealer service person had suggested.nothing worked so i had to have the vehicle towed to my local chevrolet dealer.they replaced the steering column actuator and gave me a bill for $874.23.i contacted chevrolet and had several conversations with tony and received a case #([xxx]).tony said he was passing my case up to someone else.that rather rude person called and said that my vehicle hadthe recall repair completed in 2004.also due to the year and mileage of my car that they were not assuming any responsibility for the problem.i informed this "person" that the vehicle had 19000 + mile on it and that if they performed a repair for the recall it must have been an ineffective bandaid because i was having the same issue that the recall was issued for.i was offered some bogus certificate for consideration if i purchased another chevrolet in the future.i said that i wanted to be reimbursed for the reaper and she told me no.i feel that chevrolet is avoiding their responsibility for an obvious defect and i am still concerned that this condition may reoccur while i am operating my vehicle.please help.

2000 chevrolet corvettethe steering column lock feature is malfunctioning.the car will start but immediately dies if moved.the message displayed reads :service steering column lock.this same problem arose approx. 10 days ago, but re-set.approx. 2 years ago, following the same problems, gm performed a re-call, and installed some kind of 'fix'.it's doing exactly what it was recalled for.the fix doesn't work, at least for long.i love the car, but with this problem, it is unreliable and dangerous.gm should be made to permanently fix this problem.my research indicates that this problem was wide-spread over a number of years with the corvette.

The steering column of my car locked and i had to tow the car to the nearest dealership. I know there was a recall for this problem in 2004. The recall was never fixed on my car. The dealership claims that there a 0 open recalls on my car and wants to charge me $1500 for the repair. I am the first and only owner of the car and am very sure that the recall was not fixed because i've never taken the car to any dealership for any reason. I asked for records of the repair and was told that they don't have records.please help!!!!!

This car was recalled by gm under recall bulletin # 04006 (4/19/2004).weber chevy installed a harness kit on 10/28/04 although the bulletin said "automatics only".this car is a manual 6 speed.in february 2006 gm issued a new product safety recall (gm recall bulletin # 04006c) on the steering column lock system for 1997-2000 corvettes with manual transmissions. This bulletin stated that it cancels and replaces bulletin 04006b for manual transmission vehicles.this new recall states that dealers should remove the column lock plate because "a crash could occur without warning".my local gm dealer refused to do this recall because he said that the car was already repaired under the first recall # 04006 (a) and that gm would not pay for it.please assist me in having the car repaired properly by gm under the current recall which clearly states that the original repair was not adequate for vehicle safety.

The manufacturer was notified of the issue who stated to the contact that although the vehicle was repaired under the recall previously, any further repairs would be at the contact's expense. The failure mileage was 47,000.

The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet corvette.when the contact turned the ignition switch, the electronic column lock systems caused the steering column to lock.the vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that his vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 04v060000 (steering:column locking:anti-theft device), although the failures were identical.the contact would be responsible for the repair costs.he is in the process of having the vehicle repaired and is awaiting a response from the manufacturer.the failure and current mileages were 31,600.

My 2000 chevrolet corvette has approximately 57,500 original miles on it. Recall #04006 was completed on my vehicle by dealer code 20385 back in 2004. I did see they released recall's #04006b and 04006c as well. I started my car on 7/30/2019 and i was sitting in the garage when i saw the "steering column lock" message on the dashboard. The car was started and now the steering wheel is locked and can not be turned. I reached out to two local san diego chevrolet dealerships; bob stall chevrolet and jimmie johnson chevrolet, corporate gm, corporate chevrolet and the ntsb. They all told me the recall was completed and there is nothing they can do, they said i will have to repair the issue. This is unsatisfactory! i could have taken the car out for a drive and had the steering wheel lock up as im driving. Doing research online and reading the recall bulletin is it possible the repair was not done properly? i don't know, i did not own the car when the recall was performed. I was given a case # of [xxx] when i called 1-800-630-2438. Please see the attached pictures.contact has not been able to drive the car for 10 months.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).*ln *ln

The current mileage was 44,000 and the failure mileage was unavailable.

Computer message:service active handling.per gm need part #26058286 steering position sensor which is discontinued for 1999/2000 corvettes.they still make this part for all other model years including for 1997-98 corvettes.this could cause the traction control system to apply the brakes and/or perform other functions, when it shouldn't, causing erratic unsafe driving conditions. I am afraid to drive it and cannot sell it as is.

Column locked up when i started vehicle.despite many attempts to unlock the column, it failed to work.i had to get the car towed to a local dealership as i was at work away from home.this dealer was sewell chevrolet in new orleans, which was fantastic with the service.the problem is that this is a very common problem with the c5's, and chevy will not issue a recall or be helpful in solving this matter.the lockup came at a great inconvenience to me, as i had to take a sick day from work and i almost missed supporting my sister in person at the miss louisiana pageant.while that may sound small, what if i get stranded in a "not so nice" part of town.gm could be responsible for somebody having to deal with a really difficult situation.and for that reason i am writing you and chevrolet.please do all you can to help me and others resolve this ridiculous matter.thanks.

Started car up and steering wheel remailed locked. Started to drive away from a parked state but steering wheel would not move. Dealer replaces locking mechanism. I'm hearing of several other chevrolet corvette (1997-2000) that are experiencing the same problem. One account was that he was traveling at 40mph when this happened. I have a 2000 chevrolet corvette with a 6-speed manual transmission that was recalled for a steering column lock problem.ever since the recall service was performed the steering column lock engages, rendering my car inoperable and me stranded in unsafe places.this has occurred 5 times. One of the times, i was stranded out of town, at night, and in a thunderstorm.it took over 5 hours to get a tow truck to my location.my vehicle is at the dealership from which it was purchased with an extended warranty.i e-mailed jim schell at gm, and a gm representative has been assigned, but my car is not repaired after two weeks.i need assistance in getting my car repaired or compensated for my loss of a dependable vehicle.

The car has not left the house since as the second instance of the column locking at speed occured on my home's driveway.

Steering column lock on my 2000 chevrolet corvette coupe.i bought the car in august 2003 from a local dealer.on tuesday 11/25/03 my car's steering wheel would not unlock after i inserted the key into the ignition.the car started but the steering wheel could not be moved in either direction. Since i could not steer the car i had it towed about 5 miles to henderson chevrolet.they said i had two choices.1) for $498 i could have the problem repaired but the replaced parts could fail causing the problem to occur again, or 2) for $595 the dealer would install a mechanism that would render the steering column lock inoperable.i opted for option 2.on wednesday 11/26/03, after i picked up my car from henderson chevrolet, i called customer service at gm and explained my problem.gm said they would contact gm's service manager for my area and call me back.on tuesday 12/2/03 gm called me.i told gm i had to pay $595 to get my car "repaired."the lady at gm said she would call gm's area service manager again and then contact me on friday 12/5/03.i have my doubts, but even if gm agrees to reimburse me for the $595 repair bill plus the $32 rental car cost, the point is that there's a defect in the car and gm seems unable/unwilling to fix it properly.your web site shows a tsb for this problem and i think there was a limited recall done by gm.henderson chevrolet put my car's vin in their computer but they said my car did not meet the recall criteria to be repaired at no charge.it makes no sense to have to pay any money, let alone $595, to disable my car's theft deterrent system.i would like gm/chevrolet to fix my car, at no charge, so that the steering column lock works properly without having to worry about a future failure that makes steering impossible. Gm and their dealers are well aware of this problem and have been for quite some time, but the problem still exists.they must be too busy profiting from customers who have to pay to disable a security feature. *nlm

This car is equipped with a motorized column lock which will send an error code and disable the car requiring a tow. While i have only gotten an error code, i will eventually receive a lock up and require a costly and inconvenient tow job. I am told that there is no occurance of a lock up during movement of the car. Many others have purchased a kit which negates this devise but it would most likely void my warranty, for this reason i'm reporting this condition.

Have 2000 corvette w/ manual transmission subject to recall 04v060000. Had 04v060000 recall done at maroone chevrolet in 8/04. Electronic steering column locklocked up 10/29/2004 while going about 5 miles an hour in reverse after having the recall performed that was supposed to remedy the problem. Car had a previous recall performed 3x in 2002 for the exact same problem which never remedied the safety issue because it kept happening. The steering wheel obviously can lock up while the vehicle is in motion rendering a hazardous condition which gm has failed to adequately address in either of their recall attempts. They need to be compelled to provide an adequate fix that actually solves the problem!

Re: nhtsa id 04v060000. My 2000 corvette steering column locked up and would not release while in my driveway. This failure is supposed to initiate a fuel shutoff to prevent vehicle movement. However, i was able to move the vehicle and drive it up a tow truck ramp for transportation to a gm dealer. Fortunately, the front wheels were straight when the column locked up. The problem i have with this situation is that my vin is not listed in the current recall campaign for this type of failure. I was required to pay for the repairs which involved the replacement of the column lock switch.

While reversing out of the driveway steering wheel locked up. Consumer immediately depressed the brake pedal to stop the vehicle. Recallo4v060000 was issued for the electronic column lock. However, this vehicle was not included due to vin.

2000 corvette i received a gm recall notice to take the corvette to a qualified dealer and have the recall work done.i had not had any trouble with the car up to that point.after the recall work on the steering column lock was done, i have had nothing but trouble.the digital information center will read, "service column lock", and although the car starts and runs, it will not go faster than 5 mph and the fuel pump shuts off.this defect has left me stranded four times.the first time it appeared, i took the car to tri-county chevrolet, who indicated that mark heitz chevrolet (who had done the re-call work) had not properly performed the recall.within two weeks of tri-county's work, the car is again having the same steering column lock trouble.this is really strange, since the steering column isn't locked.this is aggravating; this car had a $ 47,514. Sticker price and can't be depended on.what's really maddening, i never had a bit of trouble out of the car until the recall work was done on it.the corvette is now sitting on a trailer and on it's way to tri-county.

Steering column locks up on 2000 my chevrolet corvette. I had never experienced any issue until i had a dealer, (marty feldman chevrolet; novi, mi), perform a recall initiative on june 20, 2005 for the problem at general motors' request. After the recall was performed, the steering column locked up while i was backing the vehicle out of my garage to prepare it for winter storage in october '05. Please note: the engine did not shut off when the steering column locked. I returned the vehicle to the dealer in april 2006 to investigate after which they informed me that they were able to duplicate the problem and re-performed the recall initiative. I picked up the vehicle upon completion, it worked fine for two weeks. I then experienced the service steering column lock warning on the vehicle monitoring system on 5/22/2006 while driving down the road, however, the steering column did not lock up. Upon leaving that destination once again, the steering locked up while exiting a parking lot and, once again, the engine did not shut off. I immediately returned the car to the dealer. The dealer informed me the problem was due to the battery being low because the vehicle was in storage from october '05 to april '06. The problem with that scenario is 1) the problem first occurred prior to the vehicle being stored in october, and, 2) i replaced the battery in august of 2005 with a new one. After having my vehicle for 9 days, the dealer informed me that there was nothing else they could do and to come get the car. When i picked it up i was advised that if the warning appears again to disconnect the positive battery cable from the battery to enable the system to reset...totally ignoring the potential safety hazard of the steering wheel locking up and was charged for their services. I am now afraid to drive the car and consider it rendered useless until general motors can assure me that they are capable of fixing their problem.

Dt: the contactowns a 2000 chevrolet corvette.the contact stated that there was nhtsarecall, campaign04v060000, regarding the steering column locking: anti-theft device.the consumer stated that the remedy for this recall was not sufficient, and recommended that the vehicles be repaired as the european vehicles were instead of disabling the anti-theft device.the consumer has contacted the service dealer and the manufacturer, and they did offer to repair the vehicle undernhtsa's recall remedy.

Steering wheel column locked when starting car.dic message said to remove key for 10 seconds then try again.samething happened when key reinserted.the car started and moved forward or backwards, but the steering wheel could not be moved.

I have a 2000 corvette that i purchased in oct 2003 and i have had to repair the steering column lock 4 times. This last incident i was 30 miles from home and paid $100 for a tow. Koons chevrolet replaced the wiring harness again at no cost to myself-again.

Recall 04v060000 concerning steering column lock locking. Mr. Darrell young was making this complaint for the aboveconsumer. On three separate occasions when the vehicle was started steering column locked. By pulling the #25 fuse and waiting 10 minutes or more would unlock the steering column. Dealer was notified, and informed consumer that this vehicle was not covered under the recall due to vin.the consumer believes the vin should be included because the vehicle exhibits the same symptoms as the recall.

C5 corvettes have a problem with the steering column lock malfunctioning and leaving owners stranded or locking the steering wheel while driving. I am one of several owners affected by these problems.i've had the steering column lock while making a slow turn in a residential area, fortunately not resulting in an accident, and was left stranded when the car refused to start because of a column lock malfunction. Gm issued a recall to fix the problem and i had the recall performed on my car.however, i continue to experience steering column malufunctions.most recently this week, my car failed to start after displaying error messages on the same steering lock malfunction. Was able to get the car to the same dealership which performed the recall, but they were unable to find a problem after running the diagnostics.a second dealership encountered the same result.however, i continue to have intermittent problems.

Upon starting the vehicle a service column lock messagewas displayed upon the dashboard when the keys was turned in the ignition. When this occurredsteering wheel locked up. Recall 04v006000 was issued for the electronic column lock, but this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.

Consumer stated the steering column failed to unlock, the vehicle had to be towed. Ref. In ea02-031 *cjs

The 2000 chevrolet corvette became undrivable with a locked steering column saturday morning 9/10/05in scarsdale, ny and was flat bedded under gm roadside assistance warranty to curry chevrolet, the closest open chevrolet dealer. The steering column lock issue is subject to a recall issued by gm/chevrolet (#04006a).in addition to the recall, the car is also covered under an extended warranty by gm.the recall was performed by another dealer this summer (less than 90 days), and chevrolet now refuses to diagnose or repair the car at its expense, even though the dealership service manager stated twice (2), including in a conference call to gm executive offices, that the recall had been performed improperly by the first dealer. He further stated that, had this recall been performed properly, the steering would not have locked up on the vehicle. This was confirmed by the local chevrolet zone manager as well. Gm records all customer calls and the recorded call is on record. This was confirmed.chevrolet customer service (request 1-361874832 cynthia capps 866-952-4368 x57879) has denied the recall repair, as has gm extended warranty, and the gm executive offices, even though the failure is identical, and exactly as listed in the recall bulletin.gm executive offices and chevrolet customer service have stated that the customer must pay for the recall repairs on his own, since the recall was "performed," even though it may have been performed improperly, as was confirmed by the second dealer.in summary, the car is covered under a gm warranty and the problem disabling the car is the subject of a nhtsa recall, yet chevrolet refuses to properly repair the car (as confirmed by their own dealer) without expense to the customer.

Dt: the consumer states that he hadmanufacturer'srecall 040006 repairs performed on2000 chevrolet corvette. Since the recall there was a light on the disc, bringing up acode that said to remove key for 10 seconds, the other one service column lock. The owner had not had any problems prior to the recall being performed. This problem was intermittent. The owner had taken the car back to the dealership, the dealer wanted to be paid for the use of the computer on the owner's car. The owner thought that the relay switch that was installed was faulty. The ownercontacted the manufacturer and filed a complaint with them. Gm said that they were aware that there is a problem, but there was no fix for it.vehicle was shutting the fuel off when the disc displayed the remove key light for 10 seconds. After the light came on.stoppedand turned off the car, removed the key from the car and then restarted the car. The owner called the dealer again today.the dealer still wanted to charge for the correction on the car.consumermaintainedthere should be no charge for recalls that were performed and did not work. Consumer stated that prior to recall the vehicle was more unsafe than before.

Steering wheel locked up.tookvehicle to the dealer, anddealer told consumer not to drive.

"service column lock" indication came up on the digital driver's information center (dic).this has been an extremely common problem with 1997-2000 corvettes.although the incident with my car took place upon start-up,meaning the car was not in motion, if it happened while the vehicle was in operation, it could be catastrophic. You simply cannot steer the car, since the steering wheel locks.ref. In ea02-031 *cjs

Column lock on the c5 corvette is all to common and a recurring issue stranding car and passengers in remote locations putting them at risk. Car must be towed to be repaired.

Steering column lock actuator failed. Was told no recall, but this happens alot on this car and the part was updated for the newer cars so this wouldn't happen anymore. Had to have steering lock actuator assembly replaced.

I have a 2000 corvette and it has 18,000 miles on it; automatic transmission.i had to have it towed to a dealership yesterday because of a steering column lock making my car not driveable.they were going to charge me $556.00 to fit it.the tow truck driver informed me that last year he picked up 21 corvettes in the south houston area where i live with the same problem and that it would happen to some of them more than once after being fixed.on the internet i found that 127,000 corvettes from the year 1997 to 2004 had been recalled for this problem.the dealership and general motors said that because my corvette was not made at the particular factories noted, that my corvette would not be corvette.after complaining, they said they would go 50/50 with the dealership so i had to pay half of $556.00.i still don't feel i should have had to pay anything.it is obviously a problem in other factories.i plan to write gm a letter with my receipts, etc. To see what else i can do.thank you.

Consumer called complaining about having problems with the steering wheel locking up. Also, there is a recall where the consumer's vehicle was not included due to vineven though his vehicle is doing the samething.consumer was backing out of garage and had moved about 6-8 ft when he tried to turn the steering wheel and could not.cosnumer pulled car back into garage and shut off car.restarted car about 10 times to try to get the steering wheel unlocked, but it would not unlock.since vehicle was not covered by csc 1044a, customer had tsb repair performed on vehicle, but had to pay for it himself.

Steering wheel locked identical to chevrolet recall campaign 04006.when to have it fixed and they forced me to pay $200 to replace lock actuator because that part was not listed on recall.the lock plate was covered.it is obvious that the lock actuator got damaged as a result of inability to un-lock the steering wheel as a result of the recall issue.also chevrolet said they had to replace the part because i had a manual transmission, if it was an automatic all of the parts would be removed and discarded.therefore i should not of had to pay $200.chevrolet case #1-325567474.

Upon starting vehicle steering wheel would not unlock.dealership and manufacturer were notified.

Steering column locked up and had to have car towed to dealership to have fixed. They told me that this a very common problem with the 2000 corvettes. Don't know what it will take for gm to take care of the problem. I guess people will need to die first. I will never buy another corvette!!!!!!!!!!

The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet corvette. While parked the steering wheel seized and the contact was unable to maneuver the steering wheel. The vehicle was included in the recall under nhtsa campaign id number: 04v060000 (steering:column locking:anti-theft device) and was repaired before the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and advised that the repairs would not be covered because the recall repairs had previously been performed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer for repairs. The approximate failure mileage 38,000. ..updated 09/29/11 the consumer stated the steering column problem had to be repaired twice. Updated 10/11/11

I have a 2000 corvette and the steering column locked-up while driving.the steering wheel will not turn, and the display asks to "service column lock".after 7 hours, i still haven't found a chevy dealer that says they can help.if that had happened a few minutes before when i was on the interstate, i could have been killed.this is a serious problem, and i've gotten nowhere on getting the car fixed.

Consumer noticed after starting vehicle steeringwheel was still locked, andconsumer was unable to make any turns.

Parked vehicle, returned, inserted key, and steering column locked.could not turn steering wheel.in the process of having vehicle towed to dealer.

I own a 2000 chevy corvette mn6.at 26000 miles i got a column lock error where the column lock does not disengage when the key is turned to start.i've seen many similiar complaints on the corvette forum and am adding my name to the list of customers that have had this problem.according to chevy my car is not in the vin group that would have gotten a free fix if i had the problem prior to 1-7-03.this obviously should never happen.

2000 corvette steering lock problem. I received a note from gm saying that they would disconnect the lock and if i did not have it done in a timely manner they would wash their hands of the problem. I paid $45m for the car and the solution was to disarm a safety feature. I complied because i was afraid the lock would engage while driving. I felt i had no choice. Tsref. In ea02-031 *cjs

I own a 2000 corvette with 15,000 miles and have twice within one day had my steering wheel not unlock upon starting the car.went to a corvette shop for help was told its a common problem with corvettes and that i should pull the steering wheel clockwise while inserting the key into the ignition, it worked.my question is there a permanent fix for this problem, i understand that it is a common problem concerning corvettes.

Forward mounting bracket for the lr upper control arm for the suspension sheared...further investigation has shown a crack in the frame rail underneath the bracket.not sure what came first, the crack in the frame, causing the bracket to shear off, or the bracket failing, putting stress on the frame and cracking the frame...either way...not good!!i

Active handlings system which is designed to detect spin out and brake opposing tires to control yaw vs. Steering wheel angle activated while i was driving at high speed in a straight line causing a dangerous spin out and loss of control on the highway.service active handling light then illuminated.unexpected and uncalled for activation of the system caused loss of control of the vehicle and a near collision at high speed.

Tire pressure gauge always low, would not show if tires too low or over inflated until too late at any speed.abs/active handling system light on, turned engine off 1 mile later light goes off.clutch pedal too stiff.

Ebcm failure, no traction control, no abs. Gm no longer makes parts! ebcm is not repairable. Becoming a real problem with 1997-200 corvettes.

Warning light indicator came on for service traction system and service active handling system and will not reset.no replacement parts are available and dealer has no fix for this problem other than to remove the fuses associated with these systems.

I am writing today to express my disappointment in gm and chevrolet for not standing behind a recall on my 2000 c5 corvette.in 2004 there was a recall, nhtsa campaign id # 04v060000 - nhtsa action # ea02031 component: steering column locking:anti-theft device (see copy of campaign attached).i purchased the vehicle in dec. 2015 from a museum so this car was idle only being driven once a month to keep it in good working order.i went to start up the car the other day and received the error message on the dic (see picture attached)mention in the recall mentioned above and when i went to put the car in gear the car stalled and i was not able to drive it. The fuel was cut to the engine which was fault that generated the recall in the first place.i immediately call a certified chevrolet dealership in staten island ny and was told that the car was involved with the recall and repaired in 2004.he continued to tell me that i would be responsible for the repair of whatever they would find wrong as the recall was a one shot no charge repair.i feel that the repairs made at the time of the recall obviously was not done correctly and being that the car was sitting idle for so long, the problem did not come out until the car was being driven more often than in the past, the current mileage is only 32,000 miles very low for a 2000 year vehicle.as this is a potentially dangerous problem i feel this should be taken care of by gm again at no cost because as i said obviously it was not done right the first time. When i called gm they would take absolutely no responsibility for the problem.

Their is no rubber on clutch & brake pedals, foot can slip off when wet or with leather soles. *et

Auto has mold growing in ventiliation system.chevrolet attempted to fix many times. It is dangerous and makes passengers ill. While there is still a warranty on automobile chevrolet refuses to fix problem. Car stinks and is a health hazard.

When the windshield wipers are turned off instead of returning to the bottom of the windshield they go to a vertical position and stop and impairing visibility.

The driver's front wheel on my 2000 chevrolet coupe developed a crack in one of the spokes between the hub and the rim.the wheel started making a pulsing squeaking noise as i went through right-handed turns.upon closer inspection, the crack seemed to go all the way through the spoke.i called city chevrolet in charlotte and they told me the car was out of warranty and it would not be covered.i bought a used oem 2000 style wheel from a fellow corvette owner.in the meantime, a second spoke on the same wheel also cracked in half.

Rear factory speedline chrome 5 spoke wheel cracked at the joint of spoke and outer rim causing total loss of air. Car was sitting in the walmart parking lot and when returning from store noticed flat tire. Attendant from oil & lube center came out and inspected tire and rim and determined crack in rim when he sprayed soapy solution on tire thinking there was a nail or foreign object causing the leak. I have asked several other vette owners in the area and they say they all either experienced this or know of someone that had the same problem with corvette factory rims. This is a very dangerous situation for many reasons as c5 vettes have no provision for spare tires and at highway speed such catastrophic failure could prove injurious or fatal.

Right front tire went flat several times.wheels are the standard 5 spoke polished oem (factory) wheels.leak testing indicated hairline crack approximately 3/8" in length on external surface near where spoke radiates from main wheel ring towards center of wheel.in other words, where the spoke is on the wheel.dealer determined that wheel was defective and i paid for new, replacement wheel.after much research, wheel defects and cracks are prevalent in the 2000 - 2004 c5 corvette models.some cracks are detected as the tire begins to leak air and the tpms alerts driver.other cracks are visible to the naked eye when washing and detailing is performed.every internet post about wheels state that the wheels are not damaged due to potholes or hitting curbs or other obstacles.other than local chevrolet dealer, i am the only driver and there have been no impacts or other external damage to the wheels.some report failure after replacement of the zero pressure or run flat or emt tires.others have had three sets of tires mounted.in my case, i had new tires installed approximately 2000 miles ago.i had a set installed approximately 35,000 and had no issues.wheel crack may be superficial.chevrolet/gm does not provide extended warranty.no information as to whether the wheels are impregnated with a sealer to prevent air loss due to minute porosity in the casting.this is a major concern and the incidents are becoming more common place based on internet research.
