In light of all the gas pedal problems we have seen lately, i would like to share one which i encountered two years ago on my 1999 corvette. Being a professional engineer, i was able to pin-point the problem to the brake pedal much better than my dealer. My local chevy dealer wanted me to replace the car's battery, since that was the first code he saw when he scanned the computer. Naturally, the car didn't need a battery so i drove away from the dealer. The symptom was at any time the car would pop-on the engine trouble light and immediately slow down. The car could only be driven up to 20 mph. This happened about six times without incident. I could reset my computer, but the issue soon returned. I replaced the electronic gas pedal assembly and the problem was fixed.

The contact owns a 1999 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated that stated that while attempting to drive the vehicle, the service column lock warning light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and repaired under nhtsa campaign number: 04v060000 (steering), however the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 92,846.

Vehicle was involved in a collision, insuranace investigator believedcause was due to loss of control because of steering column failure/ or electrical failure. Dealer/manufacturer were not notified at this time. Please feel free to provide any further details.

Vehicle experiences intermittent electrical problems effecting computer operation. Mjs

My corvette as well as many others from 97-04 suffer from the active handling abs/traction control system going bad. The part is known as the ebcm. When it goes bad (if cruise is engaged) the car will disable cruise control suddenly causing car to slow down. Also, when the system fails while moving it cause cause uneven brake feeling and you loose the abs and traction control systems . Gm has discontinued the parts required to repair this and this issue has been major safety concerns for many years now affecting many 97-04 corvettes. Also a part of this system is the steeling wheel position sensor which is also discontinued. Swps can send wrong info to the other computers and the car will make erroneous 'corrections' that can lead to brakes being applied at any moment while driving.

This "luxury" vehicle that i purchased with only 48 miles on it brand new in october of 1998 first broke down on december 17, 1998.since december 19, 1998 my vehicle has been off the road 42 days and in the service department with 15 repair orders all on the computer/electrical system of the vehicle.the dealership now tells me that there is nothing more they can do for me i have to deal with the chevrolet corporation and was advised to retain legal counsel.my situation meets two-fold the north carolina lemon law requirements.the gas needle moves down to past the empty mark and the computer sounds its warning signal , the computer read low fuel, limited handling, also the computer reads my right rear tire as being flat and sounds its alarm while driving.this vehicle sends false signals.one day after only having had purchased it for 6 months it wouldn't even start in a shopping lot.this vehicle is unsafe and i do not feel safe driving it on the interstate, especially as a female.

Headlights randomly turn off while driving.this was recalled on many other gm vehicles including the c6 model, but has not been recalled for the same issue on my 1999 c5, which is a low-mileage, always garaged vehicle.there are many other owners with the same issue, and there are certainly other complaints.this is a serious and dangerous safety issue and the recall should be expanded to include this vehicle.

The contact owns a 1999 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated that the vehicle was inoperable because the lock plate failed. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer, who diagnosed that the ignition lock actuator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign id number: nhtsa 04v060000 (steering). The vehicle was not repaired by the dealer. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 43773.

1999 corvette pull key wait 10 seconds, column shift lock, fuel system shut off, stalled for the second time, first time 2008, cost me 550.00, this time 3 days ago, stalled again,2 tow truck bills, chevy garage states this was fixed on recall, what can i do?[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Turn signal blinkers fail to work intermittently.

Dt*: the contact stated while the vehicle was parked, the steering wheel locked and the digital wait ten seconds and remove key light illuminated.after following the digital display command, the steering wheel remained in the locked position.the vehicle was towed to a dealer who determined the wiring harness, steering module, and lock plate needed to be replaced.additionally, the computer code was reprogrammed.after these corrections were made, the problem persisted.the manufacturer was alerted.

The contact owns a 1999 chevrolet corvette. While driving 1 mph, the vehicle stalled. The contact stated that the service column lock indicator illuminated and the "pull key ten seconds" message displayed. The contact stated that the vehicle was showing the same symptoms as indicated in nhtsa campaign number: 04v060000 (steering). The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 30,300.

While pulling my car out of the garage and in drive the steering wheel locked as if the key was removed and in the security mode.i stopped the car and tried to wiggle the key to remedy, it would not, i had to stop the car, return the transmission to park, turn the key off and remove, and when i reinstalled and started the car the steering wheel would unlock.i took the car to the dealer, whom informed me this was a safety recall, had been addressed about 3500 miles prior, and it would now need to be repeated and my cost is almost $1000.00.it appears to me the recall correction was either not designed, installed, or has correctly resolved the recall problem.imagine had this occurred while traveling at highway speeds??i contacted gm and reported, they chose to do nothing.[xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The vehicles steering column locked up without warning.the part was replaced, but the problem recurred. *nlm gm had no concernto resolve the problem.the consumer was told by many gm representatives, the steering column problemwas an issue and would happen again.the temperature control had gotten stuck on 69 degrees, the found the sensor had shorted. *scc

Service active handlingmessage on dic . It comes and gos . It usually shuts off after turning ignition off and restarting . I don't know if it is working or not. This safety concern . Gm should have service parts for electronic components or have some other company have the rights to make them . What are owners supposed to do? we need a law for this. This is not a throw a way car . This car has only 24000 miles.

My factory-installed delco battery started leaking acid from the positive terminal recently.i didn't realize the extent of the leak until i decided to replace the battery.upon removing my old battery, i noticed the acid had leaked underneath the tray.i did some research in the internet, and learned that many corvettes (c5's) suffer the same problem.some owners spent thousands of dollars in repairs.gm will cover the repairs only if the car is under warranty.it seems to me that delco is producing a car battery that can potentially damage a car by acid leak and cause an extreme human health hazard.if sulfuric acid, which is contained in these batteries, comes in contact with skin, it withdraws water, leaving a black charred carbon residue in place of living tissue. The higher the concentration, the greater the danger. If sulfuric acid comes in contact with large areas of human tissue, death can occur. If acid fumes are inhaled, serious lung and bronchial damage can occur.i believe this issue should be investigated for its potential health hazard.gm and delco should be liable for all damages as a result of these batteries.

For lamps and battery failed. *mjs

Per dealer, the actuator can go out at any time for unknown reasons.the owner's manual states that the vehicle must be towed and worked on only by the dealer.if the actuator goes out, the vehicle's steering column locks up as an ant-theft feature of the vehicle.unfortunately, there is nothing the owner can do to prevent it.it costs an average of $450 to replace the actuator, which the dealer realizes can't be prevented.i've learned this is a common problem among corvette (1997-2000) owners. Ref. In ea02-031 *cjs

Consumer's wife was driving on the highway when the service warning light came on for the anti- lock theft device. The lights and the engine shut down.consumer took the car to the dealership on september 10,1999.

According to your recall#04v060000, dated 02/09/04 the steering wheel lockup on 97 through 2000 corvettes. Mine did it and i had to have the dealer disable the wheel lock.they informed me that my car was not covered by the recall, even though i had the same problem.now a friend of mine's 99 corvette just did the same thing and had to be hauled to the dealer and he was told his was not included in the recall. I would like to know why we were excluded from the recall.i would also like to be reimbursed for the expense.i await you reply.

I was the owner of a 1999 c-5 corvette sport coup with 12,924 miles and in mint condition. On nov.17,04 at 7:50pm, i was pulling away from a stop sign. As i made a right hand turn around a corner i accelerated the car in a normal manner. All of a sudden the engine went to the full throttle position and the rear of the car jumped to the left. I tried to correct and then the car jumped to the right and i hit a palm tree. During this rapid acceleration event i lifted my foot from the accelerator with no effect to the engine rpm. The distance from the stop sign where i made the right hand turn to the palm tree was about 150-200 feet. The car was totaled by my insurance company. A passenger and myself are ok but we have some seat belt bruising. I feel that the seat belt and air bags saved our lives. I would like the nstb to look into these types of crashes and advise me of the results. I am sure there are other similar incidents that are not reported.

(1) windshield mounted rear-view mirror shakes/vibrates badly at idle and on highway, especially with convertible top down, making following vehicles appear blurry.dealer replaced mirror once, second dealer retightened to windshield, but problem remains.(2) drive belts make growling sound at idle, a/c on, when shifting between park & reverse, or between reverse & drive.belt & tensioner replaced per existing service advisory, but problem still occurs.(3) rear mounted cd changer does not function if vehicle is started soon after inserting cd cartridge; "err" displayed on radio.once "err" is displayed, must remove and reinsert cd cartridge to make work again (restarting vehicle or turning radio off/on doesn't help).voltage at cd changer drops down to about 10v when starting vehicle.dealers clueless.(4) electric fuel pump behind driver seat makes annoying buzzing sound when vehicle stopped, at idle, esp. Noticeable with windows up.dealer says noise is normal and existing service advisories only apply to '97 & '98 vehicles.

1997 thru 2000 chevy corvettes have had abs / traction control problems since their original production . The problem is gm never fixed the problem until the 2001 model year and this part does not fit the 1997 - 2000 autos . They no longer make parts to fix the problem, and the abs module can not be repaired by after market repair facilities . So now we have thousands of vehicles on the road with a problem that can not be repaired .their are many complaints about this problem on the gm forums sites .i feel a big problem with this is since this is a corvette these cars are not going away and will be on the road for many decades to come as they are a collectible vehicle .i do believe gm has the responsibility to fix this problem or at least release info to aftermarket repair facilities so they can be repaired.ormake a part so these cars can be repaired and be on our highways safe .in their own words in theirowners manual they say if the abs / traction / handling control light is on to see a dealer as soon as possible, that's great but they can not fix the problem as they have no parts to fix it . Thank you

Service engine soon light is also active traction control warning is on. Dealer says car needs "steering angle sensor" which gm does not make anymore it comes up as discontinued part. I think it is dangerous to drive this car without active traction handling and would like it fixed if we could get the part.frustrated

After having the harmonic balancer replaced. After leaving baierl automotive service (wexford, pa) and 1/8 mile drive, the following warning messages appeared with alarm on my d.i.c. Active handling warming up' then "service vehicle soon " they have know they broke it when they dropped the steering but can't get the part to fix it. I found the parts, (used) required and paid way to much money for labor to have them install them. After around 200 miles my d.i.c. Now annunciate, active handling ,serviceabs, service traction control.do i need to get a lawyer for help.

My warning lights came on indicating check anti-lock brakes and traction control.after a visit to a chevy dealer, i was told that the sensor controlling these items was bad and gm no longer produced the part.after searching the internetwithout success for the part, i was told by one part supplier that he had 15 people on a waiting list for the part and no idea when he would have one.in the meantime, i am driving a vehicle without anti-locks and without traction control, safety options i paid for that are now inoperable.should an accident occur as a result of these failings, would gm accept responsibility??

While turning a corner at a normal rate of speed, active handling turned on and tried to straighten out the vehicle, putting me on a collision course with the car in the opposite lane.it would have forced crossing over the lane had i not reacted quickly.repair shop diagnosed as failed steering wheel position sensor; a part gm chose to discontinue years ago even though it is one of the most critical safety components of the vehicle.

"takata recall" my traction control comes on all the time and i sometimes have a pull on the right rear tire. The car is in motion.street.this happens continuously. This started around early part of 2013.i have no idea what type of photo you want.

When i make a slow turn left or right sometimes the front brake would grab my car as the service active handling would show on my dash. The dealer classic chevrolet had my car for 2 weeks as they said it was the steering wheel position sensor (but gm has discontinued new parts for 1999 & 2000 models only). The dealer couldn't repair the problem even when i provided a used part as they say used sensors don't work. There are over 6,000 1999 & 2000 vettes that were sold so what are we supposed to do trash our $20,000.00 cars to the dumpster?gm needs to take accountability and at least start offering this part for manufacturing. The reason gm quit make this part was due to a dispute between them & 2 manufacturers who claimed they would be able to manufacture this product for these year models. This gm dropped it but they still make it for other older & newer models.

The corvette shut down and displayed steering column lock. Based on prior gm corvette recalls the recall to fix this problem (steering column lock) where they state "a crash could occur without warning" did not cover all corvettes made during this time period. Gm service operations dcs851 effective through 2003. I did not get far with gm or the dealership on addressing the column lock issue. Since gm states it could result in a crash it surprised me that they don't have any interest in looking into whether the recall should be expanded to include other corvettes during the time period they had over 126,000 affected. If it was necessary back than what is different now?

Since ordering this vehicle there have been numerous factory defects and oversights which continue to plague the automobile. No safety defect (s) listed in summary.

Noticeable with windows up.dealer says noise is normal and existing service advisories only apply to '97 & '98 vehicles.

Fuel pump failed causing the vehicle to stall.

Fuel system, gasoline delivery, computer shuts gas level to empty and the vehicle shuts down while driving.

Fuel pump failed without warning.car lost all power instantly.car would start but would not run for more than 30 seconds.throttle had no effect.if the pump ahd failed in traffic, during an evasive maneuver or while attempting to cross a busy road, the car would have been without power and unable to avoid any other oncoming vehicles.other late model corvette owners have reported fuel pump problems on the internet; this is not an isolated incident. This failure has the potential to cause a major accident if not corrected.

The vehicle was started up then turned off. There was a whisteling sound, and white smoke was noticed coming from the right rear wheel, the vehicle was then back up and flames where noticed. The fire department put the fire out, and determined the cause was the fuel filter. Chevrolet has been contacted.

Possible fuel injection failure caused vehicle to shudder and die.

While fillingfuel tankfuel was leaking.while driving a security light will pop on sometimes. When pulling out seat belt it will retract and lock without releasing.

(1) intermittent passive keyless entry/alarm system malfunctions in "passive" mode:doors lock and alarm sets in 5 seconds if key removed from ignition and doors still closed; if unlock button pressed and enter vehicle, doors lock and alarm sets.(2) fuel gauge inaccurate: when tank is completely full, intermittently reads 2/3 full after starting vehicle.after driving for 2 minutes or so, fuel gauge jumps to the full mark.(3) steering column locked while car in gear but not moving (after backing out of garage, while at dealer for other repairs).ref. The fuel gauge on my 1999 chevrolet corvette has never worked properly and now the vehicle stops despite having several gallons of fuel in the tank.i have been stranded several times.most recently in a very dangerous traffic situation.i believe this is now a true safety concern.there also appears to be several service bulletins out on this problems so it does not appear to be isolated.

I am in the process of having my forth steering column replaced on my 1999 corvette, manual transmission. But the problem that i am reporting is that there were two times that this car ran out of gas with over 100 miles still showing on the distance to empty display.the last time i was having the steering column replaced i found a service bulletin , tsb # 02-06-04-010a pertaining to erratic fuel level readings and had the dealer correct the problem. Both times running out of fuel were at night time and the last time i was stranded on the top of a bridge with my daughter. We were almost hit 4 times by cars driving by because there was no place to safely pull over. I feel this should be a recall item because it leads you to a false sense of security in having fuel and when the car stops running, you loose the ability to steer the car safely.

After parking and trying to restart the engine the message "steering column maintainance needed" the engine started but when i put it in gear the engine stopped. After trying to start the car again and again the same result. I checked the owners manuel and found no such item. After sitting for about 20 minutes the cat did start and i got home.

Fuel leak from the passenger fuel tank. This is creating a fuel vapor smell inside the car and the garage where parked. This is afire and safety hazard!

Gas leaking on top of exhaust on drivers side of vehicle. Noticed drip on floor of garage when parked overnight. Parked car for the rest of the year. Have not driven since.

Hi, we have a 1999corvette and when we went to start it the steering wheel was locked and would not release for sometime. I had received a letter dated february 2006 from gm stating they would fix a problem in the event this was a problem, but it was not a recall!!!! we checked on the recalls and supposedly the problems were fixed. I took the car to a gm dealer and to no avail the letter had an expiration date of february 29, 2008. Now if the problem was fixed why are we having problems with the steering column failure? it does state that if the steering column fails that the vehicle could cause the fuel supply to shut off and cause a serious accident. The dic displays this message all the time. The gm dealer would not fix it only if i was going to pay. I feel we should not have to pay for a problem with this gm issue. If the vehicle was repaired the right way when it was taken for the recall then this problem should not existing right now. We were not the owners at the time this vehicle was repaired under the recall. I also called gm and they said it was also not covered now because there was an expiration date on the letter we received even though the problem just occurred this year after we put the car back on the road for the summer. What options to i have right now as we only drive the car around town and we don't dare drive to far?

Two issues:most important - active handling activates intermittently when there is no reason for it.we have taken the car to a dealership for repair several times.each time they say it's repaired.it is not.second issue:trunk lid opens only when it feels like it.

Emergency brake inoperative. Yh

Parking brake failed to hold allowing vehicle to roll backwards into a tree doing considerable damage to the vehicle.this appears to be an extremely common problem as indicated by the number of identical complaints on this nhtsa site.

Parking brake fails to hold car even on level ground, car rolls away with driver until manual transmission is put in gear and clutch is released.

The parking brake has not functioned correctly since purchase. Multiple service departments have stated that it is in "correct functional order".

The nonfunctional parking brake is also a problem on the 1998 corvette (i know this from reading various corvette forums where owners of both 1998 and 1999 corvettes have complained about this problem).i have asked participants of one such forum to lodge their complaints with nhtsa so something can be done about this problem. In my case, i have had my 6-spd coupe in four times to have a nonfunctional parking brake repaired.the parking brake is often essential with a manual transmission, and i sure would like one that is operational.after the second repair attempt, i was told that the goodwrench technician that was trying to repair my brake had contacted gm engineers in detroit and was told that they were aware of the problem, but that there was no fix for it.this was a year ago.i have since taken it in two more times and have filed a lemon law complaint with the state of maryland.it has been in the attorney general's office since june 2000.gm is stringing md along, just as they strung me along with the multiple repair "attempts".the ag's office was even recently told that a gm manager met with me and tried the brake and that it was fine.they are either dealing with too many complainants to keep them straight or are outright lieing.no such meeting ever took place!

Parking brake did not hold and the car, while parked, rolled down a slight incline and hit another parked car. This occurred at my place of business. Upon dealer inspection, it was found that the cable brackets that support the cable at the rear disc assembly were fatigued and bent which rendered the brake effect inoperable. The dealer indicated that my car was one of several that they had seen with this problem. They were going to order replacement brackets and seek authorization from gmc to weld support gussets to the bracket to prevent it from collapsing again. These repairs have not yet been made - pending parts.

At approximately 20,000 miles the linkage that connected the shifter to the transmission disengaged, i do not have the service record for that service.however, i believe it was fixed under the original warranty coverage.apparently there is a weakness in the grommet that connects the cable. On january 19, 2013, at 71,126 miles the same occurred while i was parked at a costco gas station in lake worth, florida.it required a tow to maroone chevrolet in lake worth, florida.this service cost me $499.34 from my personal funds. Service requires a new cable.on january 21, 2015, at 81,321 miles the problem occurred again while i was parked at the bass pro shop in palm bay, florida.this required a tow to rosner chevrolet in melborune, florida.the service cost me $397.55 from my personal funds. Service required a new cable and gasketsas you can see, i average about 5,000 miles per year.albeit, this car is 16 years old and in like new condition.having owned several cars with excess of 100,000 miles and have never experienced this problem.

The contact owns a 1999 chevrolet corvette. After the key was placed in the ignition, the vehicle cranked. However, the steering wheel was in a locked position and the gear shifter failed to shift into gear. A few hours later, the steering wheel unlocked without warning. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign number: 04v060000 (steering). The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 27,000.

Automatic transmission lost reverse and 2nd gear without warning of any kind. Broken sun shell.

When starting the car in motion for accessing a highway, if one rear wheel loses traction, the throttle closes which cuts down the power of the engine, leaving you and the auto setting halfway on to the highway. You are trying to access with oncoming auto's approaching you, which will some day cause an accident and potential death to the person in the auto accessing the highway, and the people in the appraoching auto.

The steering wheel would lock after leaving the vehicle idling for a period of three to five minutes.when placing the key in the ignition, the warning indicator suggested taking the key out and try again in ten seconds.the dealer made some repairs to the steering column, but the problem still occurred.other problems are as followed:the right window leaked water where the top meets the windshield(badly), the rear differential area leaked fluid when sat overnight, there was a rattling noise underneath the vehicle due to the transmission cooler liners being misadjusted, there was a rattle in the engine when accelerated up a hill or when taking off, the driver door leaked when it rained and scrapes when rolled down, there was a grinding in the rear end when backed up or when it's cold, the right door glass rattled while the vehicle was in motion, and the wipers were inoperative.the convertible top was replaced. *sccthe fog lamp was replaced and the spoiler was loose.

The vehicle was parked, the transmission was in park, before the car could be shut off. The car took off spinning the rear wheels, jumped over a concrete parking stop and over a small hedge into a tree, when the car hit the tree the car continued to spin the rear tires (while in park) until the key was shut off. The air bags did not inflate, the car has extensive damage, the computer showed to service vehicle soon when started, previous day the vehicle was filled with gas and the guage went crazy and the dash lights blinked off and on while beeing driven on the freeway. The vehilce has been recalled for the steering locking twice, once by mail, once the steering did lock up and had to be towed into the dealership for 72hrs of repair, sounds like a lie, but this really happened, i am afraid the car has a malfunction in the computer and it will kill someone if fixed and driven again.ref. This vehicle has a lockout on the standard transmission that requires the driver to shift from 1st gear directly to 4th gear at intervals i have been unable to determine.a light comes on the dash telling the driver to shift from 1st to 4th and if it is not expected or noticed ( mostly when turning and your eyes are focused on the road) causes a significant reduction in speed.this has caused drivers behind me to stand on their brakes to keep from hitting my vehicle in the rear ,and has resulted in several drivers becoming quite irate with me.

Clutch intermittently will not return to the housing unit.transmission will become stuck.

Consumer statesthere is a design flaw in the manual transmission, consumer is unable to shift from first to second gear, goes to fourth gear instead. Contacted dealer, who informed consumer that this was what it was supposed to do this as a fuel saver.*nlm

My 1999 corvette seat belt retractor quit working 2 days ago . My wife was unable to fasten the seat belt after several tries. I removed both retractors to inspect and could find no visible damage. There car is in showroom condition. I did an internet search for info and found a recall campaign : nhtsa campaign i'd number 00v111000 apr 6 2000. I called my chevy dealer [xxx] and they said a recall had been done in 2000 for a plastic part to stop belt twisting and no further recall would be honored. But this is not the problem! the ratcheting mechanism is faulty. I need this fixed asap from the defective seat belt mechanism. This results in a vehicle i now cannot legally and safely drive.please help.[xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

The driver's side seat belt will not retract.it is extended all the way out.therefore, it will not fit nor will it protect anyone from injury.i find this to be a seatbelt defect and a major safety hazard.

The contact owns a 1999 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated that the front passenger's side seat belt failed.the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for inspection. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 90,000.

Seat belt mechanism is jammed and unusable on drivers side.passenger side belt was repaired previously, but i have no reason to think it will not fail again.

Driver seat belt mechanism repeatedly jams making it inoperable.

Consumer states thatdrivers side seat belt does not lock. Dealer notified.

Consumer became aware of recall 00v-111, however is having a difficult time receiving the repair because the dealer is not aware of the recall.

Chevy at the 1-800-222-1020 does not know about recall #00034 "what is going on here" no safety defect listed for above vehicle.

Steering locked, headlights stuck open, short circuited and melted rearview mirror, dead battery in a brand new car reasons undetermined by dealer just replaced 2 batteries, smoke coming from vents smell of burning wires, key fob inoperable, multiple computer warnings for no apparent reason, tire pressure warnings, fuel gauge warnings, check engine warnings, driver seat motor groans loudly like its straining to move, steering wheel has a grinding/squealing noise when turned hard left or right, computer memory inoperable, seatbelts get stuck in or retract back, rearview mirror gets so hot you can't touch it, drivers seat won't move forward at times unless manually placed there then it will move back while i am driving making it impossible for my feet to touch the pedals. The car is flawed and needs to be recalled.what are we waiting for someone to die in the process. It will happen if something isn't done promptly. You can't expect to pay this kind of money or any monies for something that is not safe to put on the road with all these problems. While fillingfuel tankfuel was leaking.while driving a security light will pop on sometimes. When pulling out seat belt it will retract and lock without releasing.

Front lap belts jam in the retractor.a recall has been issued on the vehicle make and medel; but the vehicle was not included in the recall because the owner was not notified.

Passenger's side seat belt is jammed & failed to retract to original position. Once pulled out to be used, it wouldtwist as it was going back. Took to dealers & had the belt retractor replaced.

Driver's and passenger's seat belts will not release from the retracting mechanism, causing the seat belts to become inoperable.please give any further details.

Seat belt on passenger side jams and fails to retract or extend.the angle of the seatbelt system does not enable the occupant to easily use it without "coaxing" it back in.the dealer is now replacing the belt for a second time.i have spoken to three other new corvette owners who have experiencedtrouble with the seat belts, especially on the passanger side. Their solution was not to wear the belt, which is not a valid or legal solution.the dealer intake people agree with us that the belts are too sensative, but can only replace the belt.

Passenger and driver side seat belt retractors constantly jam, causing seat belts to be inoperable.took to dealer who "lubed" retractors, which had no effect.caused by seatbelt improperly feeding into retractor and ratchet mechanism preventing belt from being pulled back out to correct.retractor spring is not strong enough to completely wind in the belts when folded, causing a jammed situation where the belt will neither retract fully or pull out.this renders the belts unusable.

Passenger's side seat belt will not retract, it binds at the corner and will get stuck in the out position. The dealer has been contacted and replaced the seat belt, but the problem is still present.

Steering wheel locked up when in reverse gear, and the vehicle was rolling which could have caused an accident. 2. Passenger's side seat belt will not retract in place properly or it will twist and jam the system ,causing loss of protection.the service department admits to the defect in both cases.ref. Passenger's seatbelt gets stuck in the retractor which causesseatbelt to be inoperable, and won't protect the occupant in event of a crash.dealer replaced the seatbelt system, but problem still exists.*ml

Driver and passenger seat belt retractors jam repeatedly, causing seat belts to become unsable, which could cause injury or death in a crash. I returned the vehicle to the dealer wh said ther had been no problems reported with this design.he "lubed" the assemblies, which had no effect.i believe that there is a design flaw with respect to the locking/ratcheting mechanism thet is supposed to allow the seat belt to be locked in a tight position to hold the occupants in the seats better for high lateral forces.unfortunatly, the design of the assembly frequently allows (and causes due to retract angles) the belt to feed into the retractor folded over.when this happens, the retract spring does not have enough power to pull the the belt all of the way in, which it must do to release the ratcheting mechanism.the result is a jammed belt that is prevented from being pulled out by the locking mechanism and prevented from retracting from the folded belt.since i know about the problem, i am very carefull when taking off the belt, but it still happens occasionaly.the passenger side jams much morer frequently due to varying people not familier with the care that must be taken to prevent a jam.i can clear the jam by getting out of the car, kneeling on the ground and working the belt in and jerking out until it wraps all of the way in twisted.this usually takes around 20 -30 minutes to accomplish.i have had to do this around 50 times now.since it is illegal and unsafe to drive the vehicle with out a seat bealt properly fastened around all occupants, i am considering having the vehicle transported to the dealer on a flatbed each time it jams.i would really appreciate some help on this matter.please call for more details.

1999 c5corvette seat frame bracket broken. I have seen on the internet that this is an issue with the seat frame 1997-2004 . The bracket is cast aluminum that is of pour quality. You can see where it was broken for some time. I can't get gm to call me back. If i was hit in the rear this part would fail. This part just happen to fail when is was driving slow when the seat fell down. I hope you can help thanks

Both front seats broke upon impact with tree. A deer jumped out and car went into a skid at 28mph. It hit a tree while going in reverse. Both sport seat frames broke at the upper opening in seat back and were torn off tracks. Since rear back seat failure is in the news, this report was submitted. Car was not repaired and was totalled. The insurance sold it off for 'parts'

Both seats move alittle bit while driving.

No summary listed for above vehicle.

The leather on the seats experience excessive wear and the leather requires replacement, the electrical system for the drivers seat malfunctioned. *mjs

The contact owns a 1999 chevrolet corvette. While driving approximately 35 mph, the contact noticed the driver seat was loose and would jerk back and forth when he accelerated or applied the brakes. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the technicians stated there was no recall and the seat bracket needed to be replaced at the contact's expense. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000.

1999 chevy corvette 49000 miles driver side seat bracket is broken. Broke with a170 lbs driver. No reason no accident. This makes the drivers seat rock back and forth. It is unstable under braking and moves while turning and accelerating. This occurs every time the car is driven.

Drivers seat moves forward on braking and back on acceleration. This is a common complaint on all chev. C5 corvettes.

When the vehicle takes off from a dead stop or comes to a stop the driver and passenger seat move in the track about a quarter inch or so creating an uneasy and unsafe feeling while operating the vehicle. After doing extensive online research i have found that this is a problem that plagues just about every 1997-2004 chevrolet corvette equipped with power seats. I discovered that the bushings that were used in the seat tracks were made from inferior materials and disintegrate over a short period of time and allow the seat to move in the track while taking off or stopping. It's not a question of if it will happen but when it will happen. To my understanding general motors has made no effort to fix this problem on their own. I understand that some were repaired under warranty by replacing the seat track but the new track would do the same thing in time. I purchased this car used and well out of warranty and if it were an isolated problem then i would accept that and try to have it repaired, but it's not. It has happened to just about all corvettes built between 1997-2004. In fact there is an aftermarket repair kit for this but it requires the removal of the seat and disassembly of the seat track and a very careful reassembly after the bushings are replaced. We are not all mechanics nor can we all afford the 600.00 per seat to have it repaired. Some of us do well just to be able to buy a car like that. That's why it's a 1999 and not a 2015. I love this car, it seems a shame that a car that cost 40,000.00 when it was new should have such a problem that could have been prevented with slightly better quality. Thank you for reading this and i hope that you will look into this matter. The parts cost for g.m. On this repair would not be out of the question for them, however the labor involved for them to do the repairs would probably be what they would balk at. Thank you again.

Rocking seat under acceleration and braking.can make control more difficult.

Driver & passenger seatbacks have a 6-8 inch play in them. Dealerindicates they can't dupicateproblem. Vehicle has a bumper to bumper warranty.seats don't lock in place which is a hazard while driving.

Thank you

The ecbm (abs module) goes out on a huge percentage of these cars from 1997 - 1999 and you lose abs with your braking which is dangerous and you also loose traction control which is also dangerous. The early c5 corvettes have this problem with the ecbm going out and nobody will fix it nor are there any parts available. Chevrolet should take care of this issue as it greatly affects safety in their flagship vehicle.

Electronic brake control module failed while at a chevy dealer and i was told that gm no longer produced the part.in the meantime, i am driving a vehicle without anti-locks and without traction control, safety options i paid for that are now inoperable. Should an accident occur as a result of these failings, would gm accept responsibility??

"takata recall" my traction control comes on all the time and i sometimes have a pull on the right rear tire. The car is in motion.street.this happens continuously. This started around early part of 2013.i have no idea what type of photo you want.

Active handling system service light first came on in june 1999.took to dealership for repairs and they replaced 2 electronic brake and traction control (ebtcm) modules. They found an internally shorted ebtcm.in july 1999, the active handling system service came on again. Took to dealership and again they found and replaced one internally faulty abs electronic brake and traction control module (ebtcm). I picked the car up on 07/29/99.on 07/30/99 i started the car in the morning and the active handling system service light came on a few seconds after starting.contacted dealership, but they don't know the cause or what to do. Appears to me to be heat related-combination of outside temp. And temp. Of system. Three modules have been replaced to date and have failed to correct the problem.also described as "yaw rate sensor circuit malfunction" on service invoice.

Intermittently emergency hand brake did not work.on several occasions the hand brake had not been set.consumer hadto run to catch the vehicle before it collided with something.

My 1999 chevy corvette displayed brake failure codes. The mechanic scanned it and tells me it needs a brake control module. I contacted a few dealers and learned that the brake control module is a discontinued part and no longer available. What do i do?

The contact owns a 1999 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated that the anti lock brake and traction control lights illuminated while driving 5 mph. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer and the contact was informed that the electronic brake control module needed to be replaced. The contact was also informed that the parts necessary to remedy the failure were no longer manufactured. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 80,000.

Disc brake rotors wear prematurely, 1st time:<10,000 miles, 2nd time:<2,000 miles."not coved under warranty"

Rotors warp every 10,000 miles.well known problem among c5 owners, rumored to be cheap rotors.

I am the third owner of this car and it has 24,500 original miles.at 19,000 (4/19/2004) the steering column lock recall was performed.then in 2006 it was announced that even those initial recall repairs were failing and it was suggested to have the locking pin removed altogether which never was done to my car.my car currently has a locked pin and the dealer says they will not do the repair or remove the pin for free unless i file a complaint with the nhta.

The contact owns a 1999 chevrolet corvette.whenever the vehicle is started, the steering wheel locks.nhtsa campaign id number 04v060000 (steering:column locking:anti-theft device) was referenced.the vehicle has been diagnosed by the dealer, but the failure still persists.the current and failure mileages were 197,000.

Steering wheel position sensor is bad. When the driver information center initially displays the warning, "service active handling" & "service car soon", the car immediately engages the front left brake as the computer believes the car is sliding. These are fault codes c1286 & c1287. At speed, this causes the car to change to the left lane or cross the centerline into approaching traffic. There is no fix provided by gm. They have discontinued this part only for the 1999 & 2000 model year.it is available for all other model years.

The contact owns a 1999 chevrolet corvette. After restarting the vehicle, the steering column failed without warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 04v060000 (steering). The manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 36,000.

Steering column lock warning light on vehicle which was recalled in 2004 and gm says my vehicle was not involved with recall and will not repair vehicle.

Steering wheel locks up upon starting the vehicle and reversing. Dealership replaced a steering sensor, but the problem still exists. *mr

I experienced the steering column on my 1999 corvette lock up while i was driving it.i was only in a restaurant parking lot and was able to stop and call for help.i called my local repair facility and they had informed me that i must have my car towed in for the necessary repairs.upon arriving at the repair facility, they informed me that a recall had been issued to remedy this issue.they check my vehicle identification number and quickly realized that the recall had already been performed on my car.they had to replace the parts once again and i was charged almost $700 for the repair.i asked why i needed to pay for the recall and they said i was paying for it because the recall had already been performed.i researched the exact recall pertaining to this particular incident (04v0600000) and discovered something that should not have been able to happen if the recall was performed as intended.the vehicle was supposed to be reconfigured as to disable it from being driven while the steering column was locked up.on the models equipped with an automatic transmission, the lock was removed from the steering column and a lock was installed on the shifter so it could not be removed from the park position.this was also intended to keep the anti-theft feature.on models equipped with manual transmissions, the lock on the steering column could not be removed because this was the only anti-theft device.instead the fuel to the engine was supposed to be interrupted if the steering column locked up.on my vehicle, i was able to drive my car into a parking spot at the restaurant.i was not able to steer the vehicle because of the steering column being locked up.i called the general motors reimbursement department and told them what happened and they said my claim was denied because the vehicle was out of warranty.from what i understand, mileage or warranty does not apply to safety recalls.please advise.

My steering column failed in "locked" position. Car can not be driven. I called chevy global and told my car was not covered in recall number 04006c.i called dealer and was told the steering column was fixed in 2004, two years before the 2006 recall. I asked how could the column lock if the original lock plate was removed? no one can answer that. They proceeded to remove the lock plate and charge me $300.i never received any notification of this recall or service bulletin back in 2006.

After parking and trying to restart the engine the message "steering column maintainance needed" the engine started but when i put it in gear the engine stopped. After trying to start the car again and again the same result. I checked the owners manuel and found no such item. After sitting for about 20 minutes the cat did start and i got home.

The steering wheel lock unit engages intermittently. Often without notice. What happens if the vehicle is in motion? this was repaired once under warranty. But chevrolet refuses to assist in repairing their repairs. This is a common problem with this year.*nlmref. In ea02-031 *cjs

Backing out of driveway in my 1999 corvette, steering column locked causing me to go over a curb. Warning light came on dash board. I had car towed to nearest chevy dealer where they proceeded to change the steering column lock motor. They told me that a recall (#04006b on feb/2004)on this car was performed and it was no longer covered under warranty. When i inquired as to a second posted recall #04006c) service mgr told me he knew nothing about second recall. They charged me $579.79 to repair and did not follow the guide lines stated in the second recall, where as the column lock assembly is to be rendered inoperative. I feel i was taken advantage of and chevrolet refuses to reimburse me and disable the lock assembly. Talking to other people on line, this problem has returned on many vehicles after recall was performed. I am weary of driving my car because i never know if and when my steering column will lock causing an accident or possible loss of life. Gmmust be forced to do the right thing here andi want my money back.

Service column lock was recalled and fixed in 2006 but service column lock occurred again. This has been an ongoing problem well documented and gm has no fix for it it appears there are several fixes out there at the cost of the consumer which is not appropriate that gm refuses to properly troubleshoot this problem which is even occurring after the required ntsb recall repair is made.

My steering wheel locked up when pulling out of a parking space.i took it to the dealer for the factory recall. They said that the factory recall procedure had already been done on the car once. They said that because it has been more than 12 months since the first repair was done they will not cover the expense of fixing the problem.i now have the choice of driving a car that has a steering column that may lock up while driving or having to fork over close to $1000 to have them fix something that should have been done right the first time.

I would like to know how to place a complaint about gm. They have had a recall on y corvette where the steering column would lock up and fuel shuts off. They refuse to pay for the repair . My car is at the dealer and the service manager even said its related to the recall . I think this should be reported asap. Many other corvette owners are affected by this defect and gm refuses to pay and claims that the cars is out of warrant this is a 1999 corvette.a recall is a recall and it should be fixed free of charge to the consumer. Please advise on how to proceed and further report gm for this abuse.

I was leaving my home for work. A warning light on the dash stated "steering column lock failure". The engine cut off and the column locked. Thankfully this happened at 20-25mph. The car had to be towed to the dealer where they determined that the steering column lock actuator had shorted. This actuator, according to gm records, had previously been replaced under a safety recall. They charged me over $500 to replace the actuator this time. At speed a steering column lock actuator failure could be deadly.

This car has major electrical problems and i would like gm to take responsiblitiy for the defects and refund my money. I don't believe these problems are fixable. The car is flawed and needs to be recalled.what are we waiting for someone to die in the process. It will happen if something isn't done promptly. You can't expect to pay this kind of money or any monies for something that is not safe to put on the road with all these problems. From reading this site the steering column lock issue with the c5 corvette is a very common one (mine is no different) but i did not have any real problems until the recall was completed last year. No accident occurred. Car was towed to classic chevrolet in altamont springs, fl. Recall work appears ineffective. Gm says that i have to pay for towing and potentially for repair work to redo the "mechanical failure" in the steering column lock system - approximately $800.

My son was driving on the interstate and the steering wheel locked and he crossed the median and was hit by another car and was killed, his passenger was injured critically and remembers that an instant before the crash and the crossing of the median that the car steering was locked.

Steering column lock anti-theft device locks even when proper key is inserted in ignition. Appears aggravated by high cabin temperature when car is parked in sunlight. 1999 chevrolet corvette coupesteering column lock problems: twice in two yearsthe first time it happened, i followed all proceedures shared by fellow corvette owners and the manual, i had to repeat this procedure several times before it would unlock. I then took the car into the dealer, they replaced the steering column lock system but told me that there was no offical recall on this.one year later, same thing happened again,i tried and tried to get the steering column to unlock. It would not, called the dealership, they wanted the car to be towed in. They told me that since they had already replaced the system, they would not replace it again. (by the way the car was still under gm extended warranty.)i did not have the car towed right away, but later that dayi tried all of the same procedures again, without success.i went onto the internet to a corvette website/discussion board and researched if others had the same problem and answers/ideas tried.locating several postings suggesting to pull a specific fuse, wait 1 minute, then re-installed the fuse.by disconnecting this fuse, the computer brain would reset itself concerning this task and the pin should unlock when the ignition key was re-inserted. I tried this, several times, over and over without success.finally out of frustration i resorted to "shake the steering wheel hard back and forth"until the pin would release. After a minute of shaking... The pin did let loose and the steering column unlocked.the next day i took the car into the dealer and insisted that they replace the steering column lock system again, even though they told me a day earlier that they wouldn't do that, they did change it when i confronted them.it does not appear to me that gm has not addresssed this problem or acknowledge it as being a problem.well i am here to say that it is, this is why i am filing this compaint.ref.

My 1999 chevy corvette displayed brake failure codes. The mechanic scanned it and tells me it needs a brake control module. I contacted a few dealers and learned that the brake control module is a discontinued part and no longer available. What do i do?

My 1999 chevrolet corvette has been into a dealer 8 times for the same "column lock" security message which shuts down the fuel line and immobilizes the vehicle.there have been 3 general motors recalls and none have fixed the problem.this shut down can cause the vehicle to shut down at any moment in time potentially causing a fatal accident for me, my family, or someone else.the problem begins with a message "pull key wait ten seconds".after this occurs a few times the "column lock" message comes on and the vehicle shuts down right on the spot.all 7 of the 8 visits have resulted in "band aid" fixes.gm has not fixed the problem.if you look on line you will see some temporary fixes and identify that this is a major issue with this type of vehicle.gm has apparently "written off" this problem which dates back to the first recall in 1999.this action can occur when the vehicle is stationary or when you attempt to move the vehicle when you release the clutch.immediately upon releasing the clutch the engine shuts off because the fuel line is shut down.it happens when the vehicle is first started as well.personally i have incurred two towing expenses.my current chevrolet dealer has been extremely understanding and not charged me for "band aid" fix.however, the last time he indicated that there will no more "goodwill" fixes.my concern is a fatal accident if the vehicle was to stop on the highway or while making a turn or on a highway.please help us owners by demanding that gm fix this problem.it appears to be another "ignition" cover up over the years.i do not want anyone in my family or other person to die because of gms negligence.

While driving with cruise activated at 62 mph, active handling system engaged momentarily pulling car sharp right.this has happened seven times and the auto has been in the shop twice, most recently last month, for this problem.technicians claim they can't find any faults with the vehicle or information on other reported incidents.this has a potential to cause an accident and i must have it fixed.please help in any way possible.odi id 709456 sounds like it may be the same problem but doesn't have enough information, readable,to determine if it is.is there some way i can get information on his problem and remendy.thanks for any help you may provide.p.s.the vehicle was purchased at hendrick chevrolet in cary, nc but being worked on by wyatts in virginia, where i live.thanks.

The vehicle was parked in a parking space in a housing area, placed in park, at the time the ignition was about to be turned off. The car took off and flew over the parking barrier, over a hedge and into a tree. The car side swiped a pole which demolished the entire left side of the vehicle, the car came to rest against a tree, striking the left front. The vehicle was still in park, the rear wheels were still spinning, when the driver was finally able to turn off the key, get out and seek help. The air bags did not work either.

Car accelerated wide open throttle on its own. At 115 mph on city street i put trans in neutral and turn off key. Had no power brakes or abs; no power steering. Was able to stop car and turn off to side road and stop without accident. Towed to dealer. Dealer and gm tech support could not find problem. Dealer paid for tow and repair attempt although out of factory warranty. Took vehicle and next evening [06/07/2001] defect reoccured but i shut it shut it down before high speed was reached. Car cannot be saely driven without concern for personal safety and safety of public.what do i do?

While vehicle was parked consumer opened the back lid andimmediatelynoticed smoke coming from the seat.upon closer inspection, consumer noticed a burn hole forming on the seat, consumer then placed a piece of paper adjacent to the burn hole and fully reopened back lid, almost immediately the paper started to burn due to the sunlight hitting it through the back lid glass. The glass behaved similar to a magnifying glass, which caused the seat and paper to burn. Ts

The contact owns a 1999 chevrolet corvette. While the vehicle was parked he attempted to engage the windshield wipers but they would not come on. Upon examining the vehicle he noticed that there was water in the windshield wiper module. The vehicle was not examined for the cause of failure and it was not repaired.the failure and current mileages were 92,000.

Chevrolet corvetter (1999) has oem alloy wheels.all (both front and rear) have cracks on the inside of the rims in the area of the bead.one wheel has three cracks, the others all have one crack.the cracks run from the inside edge toward the center of the wheel, and are about an inch long.there are no signs of any other damage to the rims (never hit curbs, road hazards, etc.).

While the vehicle was parked driver noticed that both rear tires were deflated. Vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and mechanic determined that the rims cracked, and needed to be replaced.
