A recall was taken care of 7/17/14. I am having the same issue again. Steering column locks, and stalls. Car cannot be moved. The dealer and their support advisers cannot find a fix. Their solution is to remove the lock kit, bypass the safety mechanisms, charge me $450.00. A harness and lock kit are at fault. They will not cover the issue. I am left with the car without the safety feature. Car can be easily stolen, steering wheel turns without a key.

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated while at a complete stop, the vehicle accelerated unexpectedly with the illumination of theposi traction and abs warning indicators. The brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle failed to slow down until the gear was shifted into the park position. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the steering harness and an unknown part related to the front engine was replaced. The failure persisted and the vehicle was taken to a different dealer where the master computer and alternator were bothreplaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 71,722.

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet corvette. While at a complete stop, the accelerator pedal depressed independently and the traction control indicator illuminated. In addition, all the instrument panel indicators illuminated. The contact depressed the brake pedal, lost control of the vehicle, and crashed into a tree. The air bags deployed. A police report was filed. The contact was injured and received medical attention for torn muscles in his neck, on the left side of the head three inches above the ear, one rib on the left side was fractured, and torn muscles in the lower back. The vehicle was towed home. The failure mileage was 106,000.

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated that while driving approximately 75 mph, the vehicle lost power. The column lock failure warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the harness kit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, however the failure recurred. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 04v060000 (steering). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 41,000.

The dic showed "service steering wheel lock", remove key and wait 10 seconds. There was a recall on 97-2004 corvettes for this. My vin does not show up but gm service bulletin louieinli #04006cc (electronic column lock) covers vehicle vinsfrom w5100001 to w5131069. My steering wheel locked up coming out of my garage. I have less than 37,000 on it. Why was my vin omitted from your recall?? it has cost be $600 for repairs.

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet corvette.the contact started the ignition and heard a loud noise.all of the warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel and remained so until the engine was turned off.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, but was not repaired.in rainy weather conditions, water leaked from the front driver and passenger side windows.also, the trunk sustained water leakage and caused a strong odor and mildew.on a separate occasion, the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer for the water leakage failures; however, the failures still persist.the vehicle has not been repaired.the vin was unknown.the current and failure mileages were 42,000.

I have owned my 1998 corvette for two years. The pull key and wait 10 seconds and the service steering column lock errors are crippling me enjoyment of the car. I have installed an lmc5 module last year and the problems will not go away.the recall on the service column lock was performed on the car which removed the actual locking mechanism on the steering column. But the car will not move over two miles per hour with the error message and i have found no fixed that help me.what is gm doing about the horrible horrible problem on their most distinguished car model.... ?all instances happen when first stariting the car no matter how long it has sat.battery is perfect.i very rarely dive the car, but when i do i have this horrible problem and it is getting worse.

Approximately 3 years ago my 1998 c5 corvette coupe experienced fault codes and warning lights associated with a failure or failures within the electronic brake traction control module (ebtcm). I tried to replace the electronic module that mounts to the abs pump a few times with used modules and the problem was never resolved. Last summer i put the corvette into the service center at the local chevy dealership and told them to fix the problem and clear the fault codes. When i picked up the car and started it the codes and warning light was still there. I enquired why and was told that gm no longer supports the abs/traction control module for the older corvettes. I was told by the chevy "certified" technician that the car was safe to drive without abs and traction control. I added that it was safe as long as i didn't drive in rain or snow.

Have had multiple issues with this car. Had a service column lock display. Took it in on a recall. They fixed it and 6 months later left me stranded again with same code. Charged me 1000 dollars to tell me the wheel lock broke. We all know that's not true. 2 weeks later have a service power train with numerous codes. Have to reset all codes to drive car. They come back with service traction control system and heater blows hot on one side and cold on other. Then next day it's the opposite.unfortunately this is the only corvette that i have had problems with and according to the reviews. The c5 corvette has many drive train issues. This should be addressed and recalled if they want buyers to chevrolet vehicles.

While driving the fuel indicator read the wrong reading which caused the vehicle to run out of fuel. *nlm

The vehicle is stationary.proceed to start vehicle.steering column locks up.has occurred several times.i am the third owner of this vehicle.in researching information regarding past recalls apparently hedrick's dealership of fresno, ca completed work but in asking what they completed, i was informed that all past computer data was purged from their files so they cannot tell me what was completed.i then called gm to get information but after talking to three different people i was told they were not allowed to give me any information as to what was completed.i referenced a gm report entitled "04006c - product safety recall - february 8, 2006" in talking with the gm representatives and i was told the report didn't exist.the report was found at https://static.nhtsa.gov.this report replaced bulletin 04006b - november 23, 2004. In reading on nhtsa, several other owners experienced the same vehicle issues with steering column.plus, with work being completed but still having same issues.can you assist me in obtaining the recall work completion report on my vehicle?hedrick's indicated that i would have to bring the vehicle in for a diagnostic review at the cost of $165.00 and then go from there.in reading "04006c - product safety recall - february 8, 2006"it indicates, "dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this recall at no charge to customers, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward."plus, whatever work hedrick's completed the work wasn't sufficient as the issue of the steering column locking up continues.

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet corvette. Prior to the contact owning the vehicle, it was repaired according to nhtsa campaign number: 04v060000 (steering). The repair did not correct the failure. The service column lock warning lamp illuminated randomly and the vehicle stalled several times. The steering wheel locked and would not unlock. The contact was unable to drive over 2 mph each time the failure occurred. The vehicle was towed to a certified mechanic who replaced the column lock bypass. The manufacturer was notified of the failures, but provided no remedy. The approximate failure mileage was 110,000.

Upon starting the vehiclesteering wheel wouldn't move, andvehiclefailed to start when the keys was turned in the ignition. This occurred due to a defect described in the electronic column lock recall 04v060000.but, this vehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.

Car when moving in reverse aprox. 5mph had steering wheel lock. Steering would not move but car would move in forward or reverse.car had rear left wheel rim damaged (scraped) from contact with curb. Followed directions on computer to no avail. Let it set for 24 hr. And everything was back to normal ..the car has since done this twice more and been put in storage since nov.of 2003

The cars computer shuts down the car at high speeds.messages that appear include low voltage, service active handling system and abs failure. This has occured four times - 6/26/01, 8/8/01, 10/4/01, and 10/25/01 and i have brought the car into the dealership for repair.dealer claimed to have fixed problem only to have it reoccur. It is like having the car shift into neutral at 70 mph. It creates a very dangerous situation as i am usually on a highway with fast moving traffic around me. The dealership says this happens all the time with the corvettes as if it is normal. I can't believe that a car would be designed to shut down at high speeds if the computer registered a voltage drop. The manufacturer representative michael steele at 800-222-1020 is aware of the problem and tries to help but has no power to deal with this issue. The case number at chevrolet is 05623088. This car is dangerous and should be subject to review and possible recall before someone is killed.

Steeringwheel locks up on 1998 corvette.vin no # is 1g1yy22gow5114022. This obviously a major safety issue and is documented on the corvette forum.com website. Car recognizes the problem and sends message saying to turn off, remove key, wait 10 sec.s and restart.

When attempting to start car, engine would not start and driver information display read "remove key and wait 10 seconds".key was removed, and after 15 seconds, attempts made to restart car.engine then started, but driver information display read "service steering column lock"at which time i attempted to turn steering wheel and found it would not turn in either direction.engine then stopped running after about 15 seconds.i attempted to restart car a number of times, but same problems persisted.i removed and checked fuze #23 per chevrolet repair manual, but fuze was okay.again attempted to restart car, but same problem was still present (steering wheel was locked and couldn't be turned).tow truck operator later advised that he had towed five corvettes with smae apparent problem in last two weeks.chevrolet delaer subsequently advised that chevrolet initiated a recall this week, but for 1999 corvettes (and possibly newer, only).my 1998 is apparently not covered by the recall.this problem would be particularly dangerous if it occurred while the vehicle was moving.ref. The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet corvette. After filling the vehicle with fuel, the contact started the engine, drove three feet, and the vehicle stalled. The contact pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road, waited a few minutes, restarted the vehicle, and drove three more feet before the engine cut off again. The steering column warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the contact's home. The dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not assist. The failure mileage was 48,253.

While driving, the steering wheel suddenly locked and the engine shut off. The car was stuck in the roadway. The car was towed to the local dealer, who said a critical recall was never done. Although i am the original owner, i never received a recall notice from gm.the recall, which i later found to possibly affect 120,000 corvettes from 1997 to 2004, was performed according to gm instructions. However, the recall only consisted of removing the steering lock pins. The likelihood of fuel system shut off still existed. The dealer said the gm recall was ineffective, gm was aware that the recall was insufficient, and said the entire mechanism needed to be replaced in order to prevent future recurrence. The replacement was then done at my cost.as a licensed professional engineer i believe the inadequate gm recall remediation is a serious safety defect. I was told by the dealer that the defect usually occurs after 60,000 to 80,000 miles. However, most corvettes are driven well beyond this point.i wrote to gm, but they are not taking this potentially dangerous condition seriously.

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet corvette.the contact noticed that the oil sending unit displayed non-realistic numbers.he took the vehicle to the dealer and they stated that the oil sending unit, the component that indicates the amount of pressure in the vehicle, failed.the mechanic changed the entire oil sending unit, which repaired the issue for 13 months.through research, the contact found numerous complaints on this vehicle for the identical failure.he believes that a recall should be issued.the vehicle has not yet been taken to the dealer for the second time.the failure mileage was 72,000 and current mileage was 84,000. Updated 6/18/09 the consumer also stated there was a problem with the gas guage. Updated 06/22/09.

I was driving on a freeway and engine/power went down while driving. After stopping in the middle of the fastest lane in the freeway, i was able to restart the engine.this happened 3 times so far while owning this car.i could have been hit by the cars behind me but luckily all 3 times i was fine just unhappy drivers honking me from behind.since the repair cost might be sky high, i am yet to bring my car to the dealer.

Failure of exaust system at welds on flanges.

The left side of the exhaust at the flange is also ready to break. When the exhaust breaks, the exhaust pipe strikes the rear axle and the muffler drops down and could fly out the back of the vehicle at a freeway speed.

Vehicle has a flapping air vent member that hits against the computer.also the vehicle pulls to the left when driving. Dealer contacted, alignment has been done. Problem still exists.ak

Both exhaust pipes are separated from flange in front of rear axle.pipes keep muffler off ground. When separate and muffler hits ground, it can damage rear of vehicle, and vehicle in path.also fumes are leaking from exhaust pipes. Dealer contacted.the inspector at the inpection station informed consumer that this was common in corvettes with the same body style, and the failure is due to faulty exhaust welds allowing exhaust pipe seperation.*jg

1998 corvette c5 coupe--gas leak--fuel filter maybe?--causes fumes and liquid to drip----.

I have a 1998 chevrolet corvette with 79,000 miles on it. The factory service manual says the fuel filter never needs to be replaced. I developed a serious leak on the outlet connection on the filter. It happened after i shut off the engine and there was no more fuel pump pressure. Gas just poured out and ran down the side of the gas tank, some dripped on the exhaust pipe. The connection they use appears to be defective. I am a member of the corvette forum and a few other people have had fuel pump leaks also. This is outrageous for a pressurized fuel system to leak like this. I was lucky the car didn't catch on fire or even explode. The gas tank appears to be made of some kind of plastic. I was wondering if there was some kind of recall on this vehicle regarding this fuel filter. I am in the process of replacing the fuel filter. The old part is available. There appears to be an o-ring inside the filter to provide a seal.

The consumer has been experiencing problems with emergency brake. When parked vehicle and put emergency brake up, the vehicle continues to drift.the vehicle has been in the shop 4 times for this problem.the manufacturer has not been contacted.

Dt caller stated: the parking brake of my corvette is not working, is not the first he heard a lot of people with corvettes have the same problem.can't park the car confident and be sure that nothing is going to happen.

Parking brake refused to engage - numerous complaints from other owners.

Emergency parking brake operates erratically.when parking on a hill, parking brake will allow car to roll forward, but consistently stopsvehicle from moving backwards on a hill.also there was a problem with releasing and engaging the handle of the emergency brake.

The emergency brake fails to engage repeatedly.the problem started within a few months of purchasing the car.dealer has no record of our reporting the issue prior to warranty expiring.paperwork indicating numerous other issues, including issues with other brakes, is available.chevrolet has been contacted repeatedly, including an email listing the 6 existing complaints on your website with the emergency brake on this model car.response has been that since warranty expired, no financial assistance with the charges to repair (over $500 per the dealer) will be provided.no consideration given to the low mileage, the fact that this is a major repair to parts that should only wear out due to usage, and the prevalence of this issue with several cars of the same make and year.

Parking brake will not hold on incline. Will not stop car when applied. Dealer acknowledges that brake does not work properly but indicates brake can not be adjusted and has no remedy.manufacturer says it has no remedy since it is supposed to be self adjusting. I find that the gears grind between shifts at either high speed or high rpm's.at the beginning only 5 gear had grinded now i find that gear 4 and 6 grind.the grinding occurs occurs as the rpm's approach 4,500 and higher.also the gears also grind when speeds exceed 140km/h or 88 miles/h.i have already had 3 prior mechanical problems with my 6 speed transmission.the first was a transmission link failure.the second was a transmission leak.the third was a broken shifter.the vehicle was towed twice due to the incidents.i found countless others with the same problem at www.c5-corvette.com it seems to be a syncro problem.no dealer has been able to resolve my problem to date.i have been to 3 different dealers for a total of 5 trips, no correction has been made thus far.

Dash display said traction control system inoperative and then 'reduced power mode'.power dropped to zero, although engine continued to run.we were in the center lane of a crowded freeway and just managed to get to the shoulder.it was extremely dangerous.it happened several more times on the way home.the traction control system was not active (summer, dry, straight road).disabling the traction control system had no effect.it makes no sense to endanger those on the road by dropping the power to zero for a trivial reason.

The passenger side seat belt jammed for at least the fifth time after the dealer installed the clip required by the recall.an accident occurred a few minutes after the last jam.my passenger was very lucky not to have been injured with more than a bruise on her leg and a bump on her head. When shifting from first gear into second at about 35 mph (engine speed at about 3300 rpm),the rear end came around to the left causing the car to do a 180.the traction control system never intervened as it has done many times in much less severe situations.the car then went sideways across traffic into a curb and then over the curb into a fence on the edge of an overpass. A police officer was a few cars behind me and saw the entire incident.in his police report he estimated my speed at 35 mph.

While driving the consumer noticed that the service vehicle soon light had come on.after taking the vehicle in for a diagnosis, the consumer was told that an electronic brake traction control module was needed.the consumer feels that this is a defect becuase the vehicle has low mileage, and knows of others with similar problems.the manufacturer is aware and was willing to split the bill 50/50, but the consumer feels if they don't cover all charges then further action will be taken.(the cost of total repair is $1256.36)*scc

On occassion the driver's seat belt has stuck in a locked position such that you cannot pull it out and secure it.also, the passenger side has tangled and not retracted properly.i had received a recall notice number 00034.i turned this card into joe macpherson chevrolet and after several weeks and calling back i was told the part was in and to bring my car in so the repair could be made.i did.that was in january.for a while it worked fine but lately the driver's seat belt appears to lock and i cannot secure it and have had to drive without a seat belt.sometimes it works fine and sometimes it simply won't release.today i took my car in and told them about it, that it was still locking and not working properly.the advisor, david brunn (7173) told me if i wanted to pay for a new seat belt they would fix it.i again explained that this was a safety item, a previous recall that although repaired was still not working correctly.he became very defensive.

Automatic transmission fluid leaks (serviced 4 times with many components replaced), passenger seatbelt retractor fails to retract (dealer replaced)

Both driver and passenger seat belt webbings often fold over while retracting. Once the folded webbing is pulled into retractor the retractor jams. Further use of seatbelt is impossible. This is dangerous and illegal. The entire molding must be disassembled each time to get the belt to release and be usable again. This requires tools and .5 hours of time. This has happened to me no less than 20 times in a 2 month period. When picking my daughter up from school the retractor often jams forcing her to not wear a safety belt. Dealer has been no help. Gm has been no help. I have a $38000 car that is both dangerous and illegal to drive. Someone please help, this is a very common occurence on all 1997 and up corvettes and gm knows about it. I purchased my 98 vette as a used vehicle in 2001. Soon after driving it i noticed that there was some slack in the seat position whether accelerating or stopping. I would say about 1.5 inches from its set position. I carried it to the chevy dealership and was told that there had been some complaints, but that no bulletins had been sent by chevy. I was told that if i moved the seat to its maximum leg room setting that they felt that it would not move when accelerating and in stopping situation. I made the adjustment and still could feel some movement of about a 1/2". I was the only driver and it still slips until this date. No incident, but with the seat being in less than maximum setting and a new driver, i feel that this could create a unfamiliar driving occurrence and lead to greater chance of possible crash from over compensating for the seat actually moving when it should be stable in a set position.

Both front seats have excessive movement, when brakes are applied. This is a 1998 corvette with just 5,800 miles. I feel it is unsafe because both seat and safety belts move forward during ordinary braking. Both the local chevrolet dealer and gm at 1 800 222 1020request # c03551435 refuse to fix the problem unless i pay total price.

Loose seat track d/s, the seat will move about 1" during acceleration and braking. The safety issue is this seat will not work properly during impact.

Abs/traction control lights on. Went to dealer and no part is available to make the repair. So i have no abs or tracion control on my car part no 9367071 & 12530740

The abs/traction control malfunction and will not enable.

I slammed on my brakes and my abs brakes failed, my car could not stop and i narrowly missed hitting the car in front of me. I had my car diagnosed at john l sullivan chevrolet and was told that my abs "electronic brake control module" failed and there are no replacement parts available from the dealer or aftermarket. I went online to the corvetteforum.com and found out that there are hundreds of corvette owners with the same problem. There are no fixes for this. I couldn't believe that gm could not address this issue and have parts available. This problem includes corvettes manufactured from 1998-2004. I would like to know what it takes to make this a recall issue. This is a serious issue and i'm afraid to let my family drive my car.

Sitting idle, all warning lights illuminate on dash board, in dash display shows"service engine soon".made it home when smoke bellowed from under hood. Abs module shorted out and started fire at module and wiring harness. Thankfully, i am a body man and knew what to do by disconnecting the battery. If my wife was driving there would have been a full blown fire. My research shows, this is a very common problem with the 1997 to 2000 corvette with j 04 active brake control option. Not only is there a fire possibility, the part manufacture has gone out of business in 2007, the module or harness and no longer available.due to the fire history of this part, no aftermarket company's will rebuild this unit. Zero available new, very limited used (yards will only sell a totaled corvette as a rolling chasis). This leaves us corvette owners purchased for $50,000 new with a undrivable vehicle!local chevrolet dealers will not accept vehicle in the service dept. ("we are sorry, but we cannot repair this vehicle. No parts are available").

I know i am not the 1st to report this same condition. You should have several 100 of us if not 1000's, who are experiencing abs failures which affects the traction control modules (also called electronic brake traction control model)( ebtcm) on all corvette's made from 97-2007 that i am aware of. We continue to experience the abs & traction control module failures and gm says they can't fix it due to lack of parts. My vehicle does not have the active handling system but others do and this has to be a safety concern for the nhtsa. You have 40,000 high performance corvette's on the road with electronic controls that do not work for the anti-lock brake systems, traction control, and active handling for stability control and no spare parts available from gm? how can that be? there is a 10% chance aftermarket companies who say they can repair these modules actually do. Many people are spending $650 to $1200 to get them repaired and it's about a 10% success rate they get repaired. Go to any corvette forums and you will see lots of data to support what i'm telling you. Gm will never do anything about this unless nhtsa makes them. Your best advantage point to do nothing is that most corvette owners are over the age of 40 and we drive these vehicles with respect to others on the road. I would prefer a "repair" capability not a 100% reengineered module so they can charge me $5000 for it when my vett is worth $10k. I hope this is the final data point to get some dialog from you to gm and see if there is any viable solution to these issues on the corvettes with their long history of abs control and traction control failures with no viable repair action from gm.

The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated while driving approximately 60 mph attempting to engage the brakes, the brake pedal would pulsate. Steering is difficult when failure occurs and the vehicle vibrates.

The dealer took out a plate that caused the steering wheel to lock to remedy the issue. Again in 2002, the same issue occurred in 2002 and most recently in 2008. The dealer in 2002 put an ecl relay harness to remedy the issue. The dealer also stated that they repaired the issue according to recall 04v060000.the failure mileage was 33,000 and current mileage was 50,000.

I have owned my 1998 corvette for two years. The pull key and wait 10 seconds and the service steering column lock errors are crippling me enjoyment of the car.

I have experienced for the 2nd time a problem with the steering column lock system.i had previously had my car towed (2008)after attempting to back out of a parking space and the steering wheel locked in place and i could not turn at all.the problem was suppose to be corrected after notifying the dealership of a service bulletin that spoke directly to this problem.the remedy was disabling the steering column lock by removing the lock plate.i have again experienced this problem!however, this time, the column no longer locks, since the column lock plate was removed, but when you try to accelerate the fuel cuts off.my son towed the car to a local dealership for me last week and informed them of the problem. They say they can correct it for $915.00, stating they have to replace a motor in the steering column, and that it is not related to the previous problem at all.sounds like pure bull to me!i have read that others have experienced this problem as many as 5 times, and have been told that it is not covered because of the year of the car.i have under 40k miles on this car, and have not put more than 10k on the vehicle since the problem was initially repaired.it is a defect that they need to correct at their cost and hopefully permanently this time.please help!!!!

My 1998 chevrolet corvette convertible has less than 40,000 miles on it.general motors issued a recall for a "steering column lock defect."this recall is very wide spread over many model years of corvettes.this is a serious safety and road hazard.i have just experienced the 5th incident in less than 40,000 miles and the 3rd time within 13,000 miles.when the steering column lock warning appears, it kills the motor.what if this happens while i am driving?it has been repaired under recall 4 times by our local dealership jerry chambers chevrolet in bellingham, wa.on september 4, 2008 for the 5th time, the steering column locked and the motor died.now the same dealership said the car is too old and gm will not stand behind the recall.they have offered to fix it at my cost without warranty or guarantee that this will finally fix the recall "steering column lock".i need to understand my consumer rights under the recall.in my opinion, this is a recall that has not been fixed even if the car has 40,000 miles on it and is 10 years old, it is a well known recall. Are there other agencies i should be contacting?do you have any understanding how a class action lawsuit is initiated?katie zowada

I was a victim of the corvette steering-column lock. I read an article just now that a spokesman of the nhtsa said "it is a definite problem, but not a safety issue".this is a ridiculous statement considering the fact that without warning a driver can be stranded anywhere at anytime.in my opinion, and i'll bet somewhere in the judicial system they'll agree with me, gm is blatantly placing corvette drivers and their passengers in danger of being stranded anywhere at anytime and in my opinion should be held completely and without recourse responsible for any harm< damage<discomfort<fear, even missing a ballgame due to being stranded by this known problem that no attempt has been made to correct by the maker (and i don't mean graciously replacing the defective part after the damage has been done!) there is a known problem with uncomprehensible dangerous ramifications.gm knows there's a problem, they know there is a correction (the steering column lock bypass).they are at the very least morally responsible to recall and install this part immediately and probably legally "if not but for the non-action of gm to make any reasonable attempt to correct a known reliability problem....fear,danger,,robbed while walking to phone booth(or raped, murdered, kidnapped)????? (you fill in the blank) would not have occurred" .i suggest a class-action lawsuit... I have a 1998 c5.last night i was driving down a driveway when the "service column" lock appeared on the dic display.the message " pull key and wait 10 seconds" appeared as well. The steering column locked up and the car shut down.i was in motion going down the driveway when this happened.once the car came to a stop, i had to push it back up the drive way to get it out of the way, since the engine would shut off if when i tried to restart the car.i tried multiple times to restart the car, hoping it would unlock the steering column.it did not unlock.i am very upset that a "theft deterrent device" is more of a safety hazard!i don't know what would have happened if i were on the road somewhere and the steering column would have decided to "lock up".what if kids were near the car and the car decided to lock the steering and shut down?when the car shuts down you loose control of the car and power brakes.this 'feature' is not safe if it decides to randomly lock up the steering column.this is totally unacceptable for chevrolet's american sports car to have a security safety flaw in it.i refuse to own a car by any company if the security feature which was meant to protect the car from being stolen, actually may cause injury or worse to the owner or passenger riding in the vehicle.what is the fix for this issue?i do not want the same parts replaced for this.this is a faulty part on the part of gm and should be resolved as quickly as possible.i have read about other c5 owners and the same experiences they had.this car retailed for over $41,000.a car of this stature, class, and price should be safe to drive at all times.i have made gm aware that i have filed a complaint with the nhtsa to look into this issue.what would gm do for a stranded customer, who is out in the middle of nowhere, and that cells phones are not accessible for communication?this is a dangerous featureref. About two months laterthe steering wheel became locked again and i was able to unlock it myself by cleaning off the ignition chip on the key, as i was told by the service manager on the previous trip.the third time it locked up on me again but i wasnot able to unlock it.all three times i was at home in the carport.the car would always start, as in previous times, but this time it would die when i tried to back up or go forward.obviously the problem had gotten worse.i called the tow truck again, had the car towed in and luckily it stayed locked so the servicemen could see just what was happening.their computers found a code b2587 which meant that the lock module for the steering column was failing intermitantly, thus locking up the steering.the module was replaced and so far the car has been running fine.if whoever concerned goes on-line to c5-corvette.com then ultimate bulletin board, c5 specific technical discussions you will see other instances of this particular problem, one instance of this happening while the car is on the road.i hope this is enough information for you to get a good idea of what has been going on.i love the car but am a little afraid of the steering locking up when i'm on the road even though the service manager said that wouldn't happen.if someone can help me or at least reassure me of this i would be very grateful.thank you for your time.ref. Vehicle was parked.after starting the steering wheel would not turn.dashbord message stated "remove key wait ten seconds."i did and restarted the vehicle but the steering wheel would not turn.dashboard message stated "service steering column." after repeated attempts of stopping, starting vehicle and trying to turn the wheel it remained locked.i called aaa for a tow truck - while waiting for it to arrive i continued to try to unlock the wheel.after around twenty minutes of trying it finally unlocked.i cancelled the tow truck and drove to the dealer.if i had known the steering wheel could lock again while i was driving, as i determined by subsequent internet research, i would not have driven to the dealer.my out of pocket cost for the dealer's replacement of the steering column lock was $100 because i have an extended warranty.this is a serious safety concern and should be the subject of a recall.ref. When pulling out of gas station the car suddenly died halfway into the omcoming traffic lane. The dic (dashboard) dignosis said to pull key and wait 10 seconds. Apparently the steering wheel was locked and the engine shutoff. This put me in dangerous situation with on coming traffic heading at me. After the 10 seconds , the car restarted and all was ok, no accident resulted , but escaped a a narrow bullet. The dealer was more than happy to replace the parts , but intimated that the new parts may do the same thing since they haven't been modified. He said to wait and see if it happens again. In my opinion this could be very serious, and gm needs to address or modify the current parts so that this cannot happen again. Thank youref. In ea02-031 *cjs

I have received the following message 4 times on my 98 corvette - column service lock on.the steering column locks and the car is not driveable.i have been stranded four times.this car is under warranty, yet gmc does not recognize this as a serious problem.this problem results in the car being non-driveable, and the possibility of being stranded at any time in any place makes this a saftey issue.i have researched the column service lock problem extensively on the internet, and have found that this problem is very common in most c5 (97 - 00) corvettes - this is not an isolated occurrence.gm should recall all c5s and correct this severe defect.i have even heard that this has happend to individuals while the car is in motion, does someone have to die before gmc takes this seriously??

Steering wheel locked up when going into drive. Once in drive while movingthe engine stopped and i hit the curb taking off some paint. If this would have happened on a highway i would have die. I called gmc, but they said that my car did not have this problem so there was nothing they could do at this time. On the web and on your site i see that my model year does have this problem. I said to gm i seems to me that this will only be a problem for you when i am kill in this car and my family will sue you for million of dollars which you will pay only to keep it out of court and the news papers. I feel that you at the nhtsa should do what you say people saving people. If i was the only person that you save maybe you will have done what you say. I think the only way that gm will do anything is if you get involed. Ref. In ea02-031 *cjs

Gm recalled my 1998 corvette for a steering colulm lock, i had recall performed on april 12, 2005 by team chevrolet in scottsbluff ne. On april 23, 2005 my steering colum loked up while at corvette function in bowing green ky. Some gm engineers were able to unlock it by unpluging the computer. I took the car back to team chevolet to have it rechecked, they found nothing wrong. Later that evening it locked up. Most of the time the colum would unlock if you pulled key and waited 10 seconds. There has been two times that that didnt work, once in bowling green ky and the last time in my garage.the car is now in my garage with the steering colum locked up.i spoke with team chvrolet and jacky johnson chevolet customer assistance (phone 1-313-667-7153) about this problem, both stated that the recall was performed and i would most likely be charged for a tow truck and the repair bill. My complaint is gm recalled this car for a steering colum lock which i have, i expect my steering colum to be fixed free of charge as noted in the recall letter. I expect gm to pay for a tow truck since i did all i could to resolve this problem. I went to the dealer twice and had severaltalks with jacky johnson with no satisfactionl

Steering wheel lock up indications are being exhibited. Driver information center message "remove key and wait 10 seconds" has appeared a half dozen times over the past 3 months. Car is only driven once or twice per week. Knowledgeable people in this area advise me this is a precursor to failure of the steering column lock. Local dealer and gm customer service tell me my vin # is not included in recall. My reading of recall campaign # 04v060000 indicates my 1997 thru 2000 with automatic transmissions are subject to this defect. Local dealer and gm customer service refuse to help with problem.

I answered the recall on the steering column lock for my 1998 corvette in november 2004. It has stranded me 6 times since and says "steering column lock" on the message board. I never know when it is going to do it so we have basically quit driving the car. In 400 miles since november it has failed 6 times and had to be towed in to the dealership. The 7th time when i went to pick it up, it failed again in the service department so i had to leave it again. Now i don't trust it to drive it and i can't sell it for fear of being sued. What do i do? gm says they are not responsible and i will have to just keep taking it back. They said any legal claims would have to be directed at the dealership.

Gm recall #04006a steering column lock up.my 1998 c5 corvette is part of the recall - i had the column lock up while driving- towed it to the nearest dealer - they installed the so called recall kit - and it didn't fix the problem - they are now saying it is something else and i am liable for labor and parts. This is a factory defect/ flaw that should be fixed by gm!i feel gm does not know how to fix this problem as many "c5" corvette owners have had this happen even after the so call fix was added. Major safety issue as the car will still run and drive when the column locks up!

Vehicle type: 1998 corvette. Failure of electronic steering column to unlock during initial key in/vehicle start.fortunately, if the rest of the systems work, the engine will shut down after the vehicle moves a short distance.i purchased this corvette in june 2003(i have owned older corvettes) not knowing there is this defect with not only the 1998 corvette but also with the 1997, 1999, 2000, and 2001 corvettes.beginning with the 2002 model year, this feature was removed.general motors has known about this situation for some time.they issued a "customer satisfaction bulletin" during sept. 2001.this bulletin covered about the last third corvettes manufactured during 1998 (serial #s 23355-31069), all of 1999 corvettes (serial #s 000001-33283) and the first half corvettes manufactured during 2000 (serials #s 000001-16233). They also have a repair kit available to correct the problem (gm part # 88952427 or 88952428 or 88952428 depending on transmission and export). This indicates to me that they know the car has a defect and are willing to pass fixing the defect on to the vehicle owner. Unfortunately, the serial # of my 1998 corvette is 11791.the incident occurred, ironically, just after touring the corvette factory in bowling green, ky. It cost me $250.00 and two nights in a local motel to get my car operational. The car is still not fixed properly.after disassembling the steering column, the steering locking system was reset and disabled. The car's computer shows an error code every time the car is started. Nhtsas web site shows there is an investigation open on this very problem with no conclusion. This defect may exist in other gm cars with the electronic steering lock assemblies.i do know they don't use it after 2002.*la

I have a 1998 corvette which has had the steering column lock recall performed twice. Now there is a updated recall for my car that i cannot get covered because the dealer says that one of the past recalls have been performed improperly. The car has never been serviced any where except authorized chevrolet dealers. The dealer says it needs $439 worth of repairs that have been known to chevrolet for eight years now as a continues safety issue. They continued to build the corvettes with the same problems after the first recall was announced. That shows inability to solve this problem. If you had the problem fixed you would not continue to build new cars with the problem.

There had been many instances of the steering column lock engaging while driving on these c5 & has happened 3 times on my c5 before the accident on 12/25/05. No fail safe system for the column lock exists and the bcm or body control module has total control over this column lock. Many vehicle malfunctions will cause this steering lock to engage while driving. Gms recall for vehicles equipped with an a/t the column lock was eliminated. Gms supposed fix for the m/t vehicles was to reprogram the pcm's with new software & this software change did not prevent the column lock from engaging; it just made sure that the engine shuts off should the steering lock engage. About 07/05 the steering column lock had engaged while driving & had left the car stuck in traffic. The recall was performed at his time. I was told the steering locking problem had been resolved. On 12/25/05 while driving on a wet road, without warning, my c5 skidded when the engine suddenly stopped & i was unable to correct the skid because the steering lock had engaged & the car went a crossed a divided roadway into oncoming traffic, stopped & then got hit. The other vehicles that hit my c5 were destroyed & the occupants were injured. This accident will happen eventually with all c5 s. If the steering lock had just engaged this would have of not caused an accident. If it had just locked, & the engine had not shut off, the car could still be stopped safely just blocking traffic. However, if the road is wet when the engine stops & the vehicle is rear wheel drive with a m/t the rear wheels will skid. If a skid occurs it can be easily corrected by turning the steering wheel to keep the vehicle in a straight path unless the steering is locked. If the recall had not been performed this accident wouldn't have happened.

1998 chevrolet corvette customer states that the steering column suddenly locked up and was unable to steer the vehicle**ccthe consumer was told the problem he experienced was a recall issue. The problem was corrected free of charge, however the consumer is requesting reimbursement for the towing charges. The claim for reimbursement was denied because the consumer didn't have the vehicle towed to a gm dealer.

Recall on column lock system on gm/chevy corvette was performed on 2-14-05 & not done properly.the solution is to disable this anti-theft system as it can lock-up on you without warning while driving.on my corvette this was performed but not disabled, my car locked up in my garage 11/07...lucky me!so for well over 2 years i was driving a car that was supposed to be fixed putting my life as well as my family members in danger.now gm wants me to eat the cost of repairs because of the time & miles since.i'm talking about $371.00, not much really but it's the principle.they should be more worried that i'll sue for negligence!

Steering column will not unlock after starting vehicle.vehicle was backed out of the garage and wheel couuld not be turned. Key was turned off, ten second wait (following instructions on the info center) and wheel still could not be turned.with the key off the wheel was turned back and forth against the lock and then restarted. After several trys the column unlocked. This vehicle has had both phases of the recall implemented. After this failure it was taken to the dealer who informed me that everything that he could do has been done. He said a possible low battery may have caused the problem. The battery was replaced and the problem reoccured 2 days later. There is no predictabality of the defect.it could be the next start or a month from now. The only sure thing is that with no action it will happen again.this defect could cause a accident when pulling out of a parking space or garage due to inability to turn the wheel even at low speed.

On 8-6-03 i was pulling out of a parking lot and my steering wheel locked-up.iended up having my corvette towed home.on 8-7-03 after speaking to some service tech's at a couple of garages found out that my problem is a part that has had a recall issued and supposedly already replaced on my car.the recall # is 01044.the part was supposedly replaced on 1-17-02 when my car had approx. 43k mi. On it.i purchased the car 5-03 from an individual and had no idea that anything had ever been worked on.local dealership won't honor recall anymore so i then contacted gm.spoke to kevin may @800-222-1020 on 8-8 and 8-11-03 about honoring the recall again because the evidently didn't correct the problem and gm won't honor again.this is outrageous to me!there is obviously a problem with this part and i feel they should stand behind their products and work.why should i have to pay several hundred dollars for a problem they should fix?what if i had been driving down the interstate or been in heavy traffic?i can't afford to spend several hundred dollars every 7k mi. Or so because gm won't take care of their customers and i shouldn't have to!!!this is wrong for them to do and i hope someone can help.*scc

Suspension: front sway bars.

While driving downon interstate in the middle of traffic. The information warning systemdisplayed a message that read active handling system was malfunctioning.ater display message the check engine light came on, then engine lost power. Consumer felt that if systems failed it could lock up the brakes and posible injuries could occur.

Low coolant message flashes across the driver information center freqently because of unknown cause.yh

The module controlling the active handling system was poorly designed by general motors and turns off the system while driving.general motors no longer supports this module and it is impossible to get a replacement.when the system shuts off a dangerous situation is created, the dashboard warning light comes on and the digital readouts repeat "service engine soon" and "service active handling".this situation happens all the time while the car is in motion on both streets and highways.i hope that there is something that the nhtsa can do so that i do not have to drive a car that could be a safety hazard.

I have been driving my 1998 chevy corvette and noticed while washing it that the factory wheels had cracks. I corrected the failure by having them replaced before they failed completely causing severe damage to people and property.
