Indash fire and smoke coming from factory installednavigation which was not eventurned on. Able toput fire out . Now i'm to scaredto drive it. Taking it to the dealer today. This should not happen on my new2008 chevy corvette z06costing more than $ 73,000.00.
Recently my low beam headlights would randomly stop working. At first they would go off and comeback on after a couple minutes but now i'l be lucky if they turn on at all. The problem comes from the fuse box located under the hood. In the beginning i would get out of my car and play around with the low beam relay until the lights came on and stayed on but now that does not even help. Its obviously a problem due to the fuse box. I know there are many other corvette owners who have the same issue. I hope gm will fix this problem.
After researching and reading other incidents, i believe the active handling on my 2008 corvette z06 caused me to crash. Researching this, i found the steering wheel positioning sensor malfunctions and locks up one of the front brakes. The car is at the body shop as of now. I plan on looking at this sensor after the holidays. Any advice or information would be appreciated.
While driving on a private road, the electronic stability control malfunctioned causing the car to first veer to the right and then immediately to the left, impacting a guard rail.
I was driving my 2008 chevrolet corvette z06 at about 90mph in straight line when the active handling system engaged for no reason and hooked me hard right, crashing into a concrete barrier. The "service active handling," "service traction control" and "service abs" error messages had been appearing on my dashboard all day previous to the incident.
Loud ticking coming from valves, worried to drop a valve when driving
Engine is making a loud ticking noise. Shop recommended to replace valve guides and remachine cylinder heads. This is to prevent a valve dropping into the engine due to out of spec cylinder heads from the oem supplier. This is a high occurrence problem that has low or remote detection methods. The severitypresents a potential safety/fire hazard.
Concerned about the number of dropped valves in the ls7 engine used in the corvette z06 that may result in a blown engine causing a crash or fire.i have pretty much parked my 2008 z06 due to this concern as gm refuses to acknowledge that there is a problem but empirical evidence on public user forums shows that there is a problem and gm should address and fix.i urge the nhtsa to look into this matter as a major safety concern!
Had my valves checked to see if they were out of spec. I have atleast three exhaust valves that are out of spec. And i'm afraid to even drive the car for fear of dropping a valve in the motor, thus potentially causing oil or antifreeze to leak and get under my tires causing me to wreck my $60,000 car, or cause harm to myself or to other drivers. This is a big safety issue for me and other drivers, not to mention the cost of replacing the motor.
The contact owns a 2008 chevrolet corvette. The contact stated that while driving out of his driveway, the "service active handling system" warning light was illuminated. Neither the dealer nor an independent mechanic was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 75,600.
During moderate acceleration and mid range rpms, the engine catastrophically failed on the highway. A hole was blown in the engine block and the car spewed smoke, oil and chunks of metal from the engine all over the road as i veered off onto the shoulder. The suspected issue was faulty heads and improperly machined value guides.this engine was replaced under warranty. The second engine had an issue with the clearance between the crankshaft and the piston arm. After approximately 4500 miles on the second engine, the car locked up and died in the middle of traffic causing a massive traffic jam for about half an hour. I had to push the car by hand in traffic to the farthest edge of the right hand lane since there was no shoulder. After the car cooled down for half an hour i was able start the vehicle and make it to a dealer. This engine was also replaced under warranty.
Checked engine heads and valves due to the ongoing engine failures of the ls7 engine.number 7 inlet valve was found to be stressed to the point of imminent failure due to the factory machining being out of alignment with the valve stem and the valve seat.2 other inlet valves were found not concentric and were replaced also.the exhaust valves were found to be out of factory specifications with the valve guides so all 16 valve guides and 8 exhaust valves were replaced also and the heads machined to factory specifications.when these engines fail, the engine stops and you have no power steering or vacuum power to the brakes so you struggle to stop the car and steer it to a safe place.the engine block, being aluminum, normally ventilates with a conrod out the side and oil and coolant is deposited on the road surface.not a good situation in my opinion as we drive our car on major highways fairly regularly. General motors is aware of the situation and so far has done nothing to show any concern for the motorist who owns the car or the innocent motorist minding his/her own business on the highway.
Valve guides on heads were out of sepcification and wiggled visibly with slight side pressure, even when loaded.heads r&r'd at a cost of $2500
Had to have the heads reworked because of bad guides at 13,500 miles. Car out of warranty gm does nothing and claims there isn't a problem. Stock 2008 z06 with 13,500 miles all (8) exhaust out of spec, (3) intake out of spec (5) intake only in spec by .0001-.0004measurement done by katech/wcchcan provide data if needed
Vehicle taken to dealer for excessive valve noise. Inspection showed excessive wear of valves and valve guides...out of specs. Engine heads and valves to be replaced under warranty.
Engine dropped exhaust valve while the engine was turning 6800 rpm in third gear at 118 mph. The engine stopped right at the time i went to shift to 4th gear and the tach dropped to zero. I pulled the car into a run off area and got out of the car because i thought it might be on fire due to all of the smoke.
I was concerned about excessive valve train noise and after reading several corvette forum threads about improperly machined heads by gm's supplier linamar, and that numerous vehicles have had valves drop and ruin the engines, i took my car with 9500 miles on it to a corvette specialty shop to have my valve guide clearance tested. I had (2) intake valve guides outside of service specifications, (4) exhaust valve guides outside of service specifications, and a combination of (10) other intake and exhaust valve guides at or near the maximum outside of service specifications. The car is being repaired with proper re-machining of the heads to make the valve guides concentric, new intake and exhaust valve guides installed, as well as new seals, valves, springs, etc.88% of the corvette forum members who have had their cylinder heads tested for excessive valve guide wear, were out of service specifications. Source: http://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/...-registry.htmlgm needs to issue a recall on this issue, there have been numerous engine failures as a result of a dropped valve into a cylinder which can cause accidents and fires. Gm is very aware of this issue, but refuses to do anything about this huge safety risk to drivers, passengers, and nearby vehicles if the engine fails going down the road.
I had to replace the exhaust valves in my 2008 z06 in order to prevent catastrophic failure.replaced 2-piece soda filled valves with 1 piece stainless steel valves.upon inspection valve guides on #3 had excess slop.sent heads out for machining and new guides.stock engine had less than 20k miles.manufacturer of engine has issued service bulletins acknowledging these errors exist.
The 7l 427 engine has a valve failure problem.the valve heads break off inside the engine while running.this happened to me as i was driving along a highway at 60 miles per hour not accelerating braking or turning, in a very remote part of texas.the engine seized up.this is a known issue by gm with a much higher than expected failure rate yet has never had a service bulletin nor recall.the car had 18,000 miles on it at the time and had never been to the track or abused in any way.oil was changed at 3,000 mile intervals by a certified shop.between towing and repair the total bill was over $ 16,000.because the car had been in service over 5 years despite the low mileage, gm picked up only 45% of the costs leaving me with over a $ 10,000 bill.this is a high performance very expensive sports car that had a complete engine failure at 18,000 miles.
Vehicle is completely stock with only 18,000 miles on it.it has never been on a track or used for anything other than a weekend toy.complete engine failure as a result of a valve breaking off inside the engine while driving casually at 50 mph.as a result the engine stopped running taking with it the power steering and power assisted brakes.i was on a country road approximately 45 miles from the nearest gas station or service facility of any kind.there was also no cell phone service and was left stranded.i have since had a brand new engine put in at a total cost of over $ 16,000.
I would like to file a complaint due to safety concerns over bad heads and valves put into a percentage of these corvette z06 cars. Gm has admitted there is an issue and yet refuses to do anything about it. There was a machining error with these heads and the engines can drop a valve without warning or symptoms and without pulling your motor apart there is no way to determine if your car is affected or not. The fact is now that an increasing percentage of these cars are losing their engines and replacement cost is over 17000.00. Should the engine go it could lead to a serious crash from the rod puncturing the block and spreading oil under and around the car which not only affects the car in question but any others following it at highway speed. There have been some that have gone off the road because of this issue and it is taking any of the joy of owning or driving this car at all. Gm will not even tell anyone out of warranty what to do to address the problem and when some heads were replaced by gm for cars under warranty, some were found to have bad tolerances before even being installed. Gm has now gone on to their new model z06 and is simply hoping this issue goes away while throwing all their loyal customers under the bus so to speak. Something should be done before there is a death cause from this issue, not to mention a loyal customer losing a 17000. Engine through no fault of their own. I have contact chevrolet several times and was met with little response or enthusiasm to do anything about the problem at all.
I was concerned about excessive valve train noise and after reading several corvette forum threads about improperly machined heads by gm's supplier linamar, and that numerous vehicles have had valves drop and ruin the engines, i took my car with 27000 miles on it to a corvette specialty shop to have my valve guide clearance tested.i had (2) intake valve guides outside of service specifications, (4) exhaust valve guides outside of service specifications, and a combination of (10) other intake and exhaust valve guides at or near the maximum outside of service specifications. 2008 corvette c6 z06. Consumer writes in regards to valve guide machining issues. *ld
Engine valves noisy and showed excessive wear at 17,000 miles. Concerns that the engine could fail while the vehicle is in motion, rendering power steering and power brakes inoperable, risking a crash. Had cylinder heads replaced as a precaution to prevent a potential dropped valve.
Defective valve guides.this first happened at 13,500 miles, and chevrolet did replace the heads under warranty.now it has happened again at 28500 miles and i have spent over $3100 in parts alone to fix the problem, which has been verified by the company who sold me the replacement heads.i provided the labor or the cost would have been $1700 higher.four intake valve guides were beyond the chevrolet replacement spec and another four were already at the chevrolet service limit with only 15000 miles on the replacement heads.obviously the problem occurred during city and highway driving.
I was concerned about excessive valve train noise and after reading several corvette forum threads about improperly machined heads by gm's supplier linamar, and that numerous vehicles have had valves drop and ruin the engines, i took my car with 40000 miles on it to a chevrolet dealer to have my valve guide clearance tested. I bought my 2008 z06 back in december 2016 with 27000 miles on it. Love the car but from i understand reading about the complains from other owners it has valve problems and the can give away at any time. Dear gm i don't care how you take this, but should my 2008 ls7 motor break down due to this specific situation you will fix it at your own cost, i am printing the complains from the forum about the ls7 motor issues, and if that ever happens to my car and you refuse to fix it, tv stations, radio stations, and news papers will know about this. Let me clear this is a statement i am making thank you
Yes ,when driving the corvette on the highway and the engine blew up and quit working everything potentially causing an accident to me at that time i was very scared.........the valve dropped through the 8th cylinder, while driving almost causing drivers to crash.

The ls7 engine has a defect that causes accelerated valve guide wear. Continuing to drive the car will eventually lead to a valve dropping and causing catastrophic engine failure. Once this occurs there will be a loss of power steering, power brakes, and water/oil could get on the tires leading to a loss of control of the car. In a few cases fire has erupted. Here are two videos of the issue happening: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tm4mdcix-kihttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zlt7djnkvnyluckily i found the excessive valve guide wear before the engine failed, but it cost me $3000 to have the heads rebuilt. The other day i smelled gas in my garage. The smell is bad until the fuel level drops below 1/2 tank. I took my car to the dealer and they said they cannot find a leak. I mentioned if this is covered under the 80k mile emission warranty and they said it was not. There are many complaints about this issue and the solution is to drop the tanks because the issue may lie in the fuel pump and leaking tanks on the top. I believe this is a serious safety issue regarding leaking fuel tanks and the consumer should not pay for a faulty item being a serious safety issue. I know this was an issue on the c5 corvette and gm replaced those tanks free of charge. The c6 fuel cell is the same as the c5 and it appears like its also faulty as well. Please review all c6 corvettes (2005-2013) complaints on this site.this should be a recall or a fix by gm to cover the costs.
Almost every time i fuel the vehicle gas shoots out of the filler neck when the pump stops.the first time , gas was gushing out and down the side of the car onto the ground because the pump did not stop.luckily it did not catch fire.this is on a new 2008 chevrolet corvette z 06 !it is very critical that i do not try to put in more gas when the pump stops or it shoots out of the filler neck.my 2001 corvette z06 never had this problem.i hope this never results in a fire , i do not want to see my car burn.thank youedward lipman
Strong gasoline smell coming from rear of car around gas tank area. Strong smell when parked in garage.
Filled gas tank to full & had strong gas odors inside & outside vehicle. Gas & gas smell coming from exhaust when car is started & running. Dealer identified left side fuel pump module needs to be replaced.
Severe gas smell left in a closed area after corvette use.when the car is driven and then parked in a garage, the garage smells severely of fuel.if aired out, the smell dissipates.if not, the odor is overwhelming. Upon review, it appears the smell is coming front the drivers side left-hand fuel tank.the leak affects the safety of the car passengers as the gasoline leak from the tank drips onto the exhaust.my mother is 94 years old and has ridden with me while this issue was occurring.little did i understand the potential impacts on my families well-being.i believe this is a major safety hazard with this car.upon cursory review of online corvette chat groups, this seems to specifically affect this model corvette.after further research, this problem seems to be prevalent in past corvette models extending back to 1997. Upon contacting gm/chevrolet service department we were told that our specific vin number does not qualify for a recall.it's my understanding there is an extension of the warranty on this specific issue due to its prevalence.i also understand that the extension included mileage to 80,000 miles and through august 17, 2017.my mileage currently sits at 49,000 miles and we supposedly missed the deadline by 11 days as we reported this issue to the dealership on august 28, 2017.while we did purchase the car used, we never were told of the issue nor received paperwork to that affect so we were completely unaware of such a hazard.i strictly use dealerships for my service and am disappointed that they were not able to identify this issue in my opinion, it doesn't appear that the company is not interested in addressing my problem.
When fuel tank is full there isavery strong smell of fuel.so far no leak on ground.smell so bad can be notied four cars away.
Fuel smell coming from the left side of the vehicle.only happens when fueled above 3/4 of a tank.chevrolet dealer was concerned about the problem during an oil change and tried to get gm to correct the issue but they would not citing that the vehicle passed all fuel pressure an leak tests.the vehicle is dangerous to park in a garage or closed area due to the very good chance of ignition from strong fumes. Just as disturbing is the fact that the exhaust system is by the source of the leak and could ignite at any time while driving.many other customers have complained of this issue without a resolution from the manufacturer or if gm has agreed to replace the defective part (fuel pump) they do so with the same type that has already failed.eventually one of these cars is going to explode or catch fire an i guess that only then will the manufacturer and the government do something about it.i have attached the service report where the dealership acknowledged the smell and the notice from chevrolet.something needs to be done about this before there are injuries or deaths because of this.
Primary tank module flange fuel and vapor leak on top of primary fuel pump causing hazardous fumes in garage and car.
Strong smell of gasoline on left side of car. No visible leak on the floor
Vehicle had 1/4 tank of fuel in the tank before filling on fri.after filling tank to full noticed strong gas smell from rear of vehicle, had to roll windows down to drive, odor was so strong could not park car in garage due to fire hazard, did not see any evidence of fuel leakage on ground, brought car to dealership on mon.they stated not covered under federal emissions warranty, although in california it would have been,(same fuel tank used in all zo6's)escalated it to gmwarranty customer service, left car at dealership as its unsafe to use, waiting on word weather they will honor emissions warranty and fix poor gm craftsmanship.btw 42000miles,non tracked,no accidents,100% stock, sits in garage 5 days a week.should be considered for a recall as i am not the only one w/this issue.
Strong gasoline smell coming from vehicle after driving when parked in garage.
After filling car with gas, the car smells like it has a leak. The garage smells so bad i have to put the car outside in the drive way until is cools down because i'm worried about it starting a fire. The smell of gas is strong. I've talked to other 2008 c6 owners and they are having the same issue.
Car has 20,000 miles and has developed a gas smell while parked in a garage.it seems to be from the right rear of the car.when the system is below 1/2 full the smell is less apparent..there is no visible leak in the fuel tank area.i have replaced the cross over pipe seals and fuel pump "o" rings.problem is still present.was not aware of history of possible defective plastic on the fuel pump fittings.i will run tank below 1/2 to see if smell goes away.will most likely remove again or address with my extended warranty as with more research this seems to be a quite common problem and potentially serious.i must let car sit outside for awhile and allow fuel fumes to diminish before i feel comfortable putting car in garage.this smell can be very heavy when left in a closed area right after driving. I can still smell fuel fumes while driving.
The contact owns a 2008 chevrolet corvette z06. The contact stated that a gasoline odor was overpowering around the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.

The contact owned a 2008 chevrolet corvette z06. While driving 45 mph with the cruise control activated, the instrument panel indicated that the front driver side tire pressure was high and then low. The message "service active handling" flashed across the instrument panel. The vehicle then slid to the left, spun 360 degrees, and crashed into the median and several trees. The contact was knocked unconsciousness and the passenger was fatally injured. The contact was injured and transported to a hospital via ambulance. A police report was filed. The vehicle was totaled and towed. The contact was advised by his attorney not to speak to anyone; therefore, the dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The failure mileage was 60,000.

I was driving my 2008 corvette z06 that has 12500 miles on it. I was merging onto i-94 at little mack when my right rear wheel broke off at the lug nuts.when the wheel broke off the car violently turned to the right and slammed into the concrete retaining wall. There is absolutely no damage to the right rear quarter panel. Gm's contention is that the wheel broke off on impact, there was no impact to that part of the vehicle and i have many photos to support what actually happened. Because my car has no damage in the area where the wheel came off the problem is obvious. It may not be apparent in other vehicles that have had a similar catastrophic wheel failure due to damage sustained as a result of impact in an accident and gm's willingness to cover it up.
On 3-23-11 while merging onto the expressway, the right rear wheel of my 2008 corvette z-06 broke off at the lug nuts. Because i was accelerating at the time, all the power went to the left rear causing my car to turn violently to the right and smash into the concrete retaining wall. The cause of the accident was a failure in the casting of the aluminum wheel. The police report lists cause as equipment failure, wheel broke off vehicle. The cause is obvious when looking at the vehicle, due to the fact the there was no impact into the wall by the rear of the car. Gm will not examine the car properly.
