I started my car and went to take off and the air bag light came on. There was a couple of incidences where i had a passenger and the airbag light came on to service airbag. I've read in multiple places where this occurrence has happened and the manufacture should fix this.

My airbag light started randomly going on and off. I noticed that it often occurred when someone was sitting in the passenger seat. I also noticed that when someone was sitting in the passenger seat the indicator often indicated that no one was sitting there. Then after about a week of this occurring, the light airbag remained on at all times and the indicator stated that no one was sitting in the passenger seat even when someone was. I then took my vehicle to the dealership and they advised that it was the passenger airbag presence sensor and that it needed to be replaced. They advised that it would cost over $1,000. So obviously i told them that i could not afford it at this time. This is a major safety concern and should be an immediate recall. I have seen and read hundreds of complaints about this exact same issue on two different cobalt forums, the nhtsa website, and on various other web sites that i accessed through google. It is obviously a manufacturers problem and it needs to be corrected before someone is killed due to the negligence of chevrolet. I am obviously going to get this fixed when i get the money even with out a recall, but i thing this needs to be investigated as soon as possible and i am willing to let whom ever use/look at my vehicle as a starting point. Nhtsa or chevrolet please contact me so we can get this process started before someone gets seriously hurt or killed.im not sure on the mileage when this problem originated a few months ago but, i believe it was around 80,000

When i drive the air bag warning goes on,and the tire stress goes on(which make me slow down worried ! ).i replaced the tires couple of times but i stillget those warning(tires stress and air bag).lately i also ran to problem with my engine.i took it to pep boys were they said i should replace it for 5700$.

December 29, 2011, i was driving home one evening in the cobalt when my car's engine shut off and i lost control on a semi-residential a few blocks from home. Driving at about 35-45 mp, downhill, i hit a parked car on the left side of the road (narrow road, cars parked on both sides, 2-way street). I thought, "i'm going to die". This impact made the car continue on, faster and more out of control, hitting another parked vehicle on the opposite side of thestreet and i finally was able to stop the car by hitting the passenger side front wheel/bumper of the cobalt against the a parked truck to avoid driving into an intersection or any oncoming traffic. No airbags ever deployed. The car then flipped over, and that's how they found and recovered me. I awoke hours later in shock trauma at washington hospital center in dc (where i worked at the time), with the car totaled and just a scratch on my hand. I just had aches/pains, no broken bones, but had to take some time off work. I had no health insurance as i was a contracted employee. Car insurance paid off the expense of vehicle. Thank god nobody was killed nor seriously injured. I have all paperwork, photos but i still don't drive, maybe just once a week. The year of the cobalt is from 2009, but i believe this vehicle should be included in the class action suit, as it was completely unsafe to drive.

I was in an accident, rear ended lady going 50 mph and air bags did not deploy.

Vehicle's automatic door locks began to engage and disengage on their own, possibly locking the steering column as vehicle entered into a curve.caused driver to loose control go into ditch, bounce out of ditch and log roll the vehicle.air bags did not deploy.door locks were still going up and down several hours later at the vehicle impound yard and was observed by the police officer and noted in his report.additional.this problem is much bigger than believed!i have a 2011 hhr and have had the ignition switch turn off when i have dropped the adjustable steering column to the down position while moving.i have a heavy keyring and when i brought it up to the dealership they told me the keyring was the problem.my other daughter's 05 impala had the same problem when she hit a bump.

The contact owns a 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss. The contact started the vehicle and the air bag warning light illuminated. The failure recurred twice. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who informed that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: (air bags, electrical system). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 51,000.updated 5/18/15 cn updated 10/05/2017

My airbag light is on for my passenger seat. I have taken to a dealership and they said the specific code is not covered by a recall. They said my passenger presence module needs replaced.

The contact owns a 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss. The contact stated that the vehicle could not be shut off and the keys would not remove from the ignition. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer, who informed the contact that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. There are no recalls or warranties addressing this failure. The manufacturer was notified and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 41,000.

Everything was normal operation just got into car moved it into the garage and wouldn't let the key come out of the on position. I looked online and found i was not the only person with this problem. Prior to problem there was no warning no sticking no feeling of a malfunction of any sort. I think this should be considered a recall since my car is a 2009 and only 3 years old the ignition goes out but worst of all it goes out in the on position it is a very hazardous and unsafe way to fail. I am not the only person that has had this problem and should be closely looked at please. Plus it is very costly.

Connector feeding power to the a/c-heater blower melted; caused a crackling sound, a smell, and the fan to stop working. The connector melted together. To get a picture of the pin that failed required me to break the connector. Power was present on the brown wire as soon as the ignition is on - the blower did not need to be operating to generate heat at the connector.the wire leading to the connector was discolored from the heat.

I was trying to start my car and turned the key in the ignition and my car was completely dead. I thought it was the battery and tried to take the key out, but it was stuck and wouldn't come out. I googled how to take it out and that worked, we jumped the car thinking it was the battery, but without the key in the ignition, the lights and electrical allturned on. This tells me that the car's ignitor/shifter was stuck in the "on" position. It could have been a dangerous situation if i were anywherebut home.

Car suddenly showed symptoms of coolant lossa dye and pressure test was completed and found no external leaks. I drove the car to work the next day 15 minute commute and upon arriving low coolant indicator popped up i checked the dip stick to confirm my fear that the coolant was entering my oil system 1-way. Had the car towed to the dealership and after 2 weeks of teardown verified the engine had not signs of abuse and the head and headgasket was not warped or leaking/blown. The car was 2 months out of warranty and gm declined warranty. Luckily i have a 3rd party warranty and they agreed to complete the work due to known issues with said engine/ symptoms . Gm notified me they did not have a engine available and it would be until october before the engine was replaced and denied to offer rental while i waited after a month of fighting with gm customer service they agreed to lend a rental car. To this day my car sits in a lot rotting away. A short google search of cracked lnf engines will bring a host of results even major gm aftermarket performance company's are aware of defective castings of the lnf engine ..below are a few exampleshttp://www.cobaltss.net/forums/drivetrain-79/cracked-block-2008-2-0-turbo-62kmi-213316/http://www.cobaltss.net/forums/problems-service-maintenance-69/who-has-had-cracked-porous-block-lnf-287721/

The front intercooler on the vehicle was designed below the ground effects of the front bumper.the intercooler has cracked 3 to 4 times and is not repairable.this is a flaw on all 2008-2009 chevy cobalt ss models.the result was a broke down vehicle.the air system on the car failed.the dealership neglected to cover this under warranty even though it is a manufacture defect.

After driving about 4 miles and then back 4 miles parked car. Noticed gasoline dripping in thedriveway. Called service garage and they said get a tow truck, dangerous to even try and startcar, one spark and it could explode. Found problem with fuel tank and fuel pump. Had only hadcar a few months. Garage replaced fuel pump and replacement was defective also. Replaced itand put on a new fuel tank. Sept got a gm recall #12190 notice. To take it in for free repair to adealer around 40 miles from my house. Had already paid almost $800 to garage when i had thecar repaired.now i have a recall notice 12045 but have not been able to find out what it is for.called recommended garage to see if they had part to repair (called twice never heard back fromthem). Still have not been able to find out what the problem. I also found out that the original recall notice about the gas pump had gone out i believe a couple of years earlier and this was the second round with the same problem. Go to a site on line there is one that cobalt dealers have reported the problems they have had, that is how i found out about the prior recalli think they should have to tell you what it is they are recalling the car for. In the first gas problem we were lucky not to have had the car explode. Had i been driving on the interstate it would have madea big noise.

Fuel line rusts through causing fuel to leak out next to exhaust pipe. Happens to evap line as well. Poor design in the heat shielding traps moisture which rusts through the line. Fuel leaks out when the car is running, parked, moving or not. Rear brake caliper sticks out from using the parking brake and pad sticks to rotor causing excessive wear.

Fuel lines under the car, driver side rear started leaking fuel.the lines were rusted through and fuel leaked past the exhaust system where a potential car fire could have happened if not noticed right away.the vehicle was parked in the garage and off when i noticed the strong scent of gas and saw a small puddle of fuel under the car.repairs were completed at porter chevrolet service in newark, delaware.repairs consisted of replacing the feed line and fill line.the estimate quoted was $800.repairs ended up costing $480.

Strong fuel odor coming from vehicle. Fuel dripping from bottom of car near fuel tank. Found fuel lines rotting and causing leaks on multiple sections starting at the fuel tank up to the engine. Protective heat wrap holding moisture and causing lines to rot.

Wanted to change oil; had smelled gasoline from time to time; closer inspection showed leak at fuel tank area.could not drive due to risk of injury to family, including two-year-old child.

The fuel lines that are wrapped in the heat protective tape on the driver rear side just as they turn up to go to the fuel tank are rusted out because the heat shield protector holds water on the fuel lines and now mine are rusted out and leaking fuel all over the ground by my exhaust. This is a major issue that hasn't been addressed with many chevy products. Now it's going to cost about $600 to replace the lines. Chevy is not taking responsibility with this defect and costing people money and putting lives in danger by having a leak prone line right by the hot exhaust. Please take action on this. I had at least a gallon spray out while driving and it continued to leak when parked.

Leaking fuel lines above exhaust. Where the fuel line comes down out of the tank and runs forward, there is a holder that was wearing on the fuel line and caused a hole and a leak.

I brought my 2009 cobalt ss into the dealer for routine maintenance, 20k mileage check. It has a 5-speed manual transmission. They informed me that my rear rotors were scored badly possibly from the emergency brake being on while driving. The dealer informed me the surface was too far gone to turn them. I'm the only person that drives the car and i know i don't drive with the e-brake on, not even once. However, i do pull the e-brake when i park my car with the trans in gear. Let me say also i do not drive the car hard like racing or drifting. I did pull the tire and rotor from the left rear to find that the inner rotor surface was indeed scored badly within 3/4-inch of the outer rotor diameter. The outer rotor surface was clean and smooth. The outer brake pad looked like it had 2x the material left versus the inner pad. I did not pull the right side rotor yet. (my new brake rotor order got fouled up. Still waiting.) like many of the other people who have complained, my car has slightly over 21k miles on it so why should it need rear brakes so quickly? most of the wear should be on the front brakes due to weight and momentum during braking. Something doesn't add up. Will it happen again with the new rotors?

Purchased the car new. At about 3,000 miles i noticed scoring on the rear brake rotors. After about 12,000 miles my emergency brake started failing to hold the car on even the slightest hill. At about 14,000 miles the rear brakes started to grind. At this point the brake pads needed to be replaced, and the rotors turned. Only the inside pads were worn completely down, the outside pads looked relatively good.

My cobalt was purchased 3/5/2009, and has only 5400 miles on it as of 9/8/2009. I do not drive aggressively and the car is pretty much just daily driven to work/home. The rear brakes are already exhibiting what i'd consider to be abnormal wear, especially when compared to my other vehicles. The rotors are becoming deeply scored and the inside brake pads are worn much more than the outside.have been told me this is "normal" (along with a host of other issues, including oil leaks from the engine). There are several hundred people on a national cobalt forum also experiencing this issue.the root cause appears to be the parking brake not fully allowing the caliper to retract, but i'm not an engineer.

Vehicle rolls for/aft when "parked"...

Rear brakes have been developing grooves being cut into the rotors.makes metal scraping/rubbing/screeching noise during braking.

Premature brake wear on rear brakes. They squeal loud at only 5000 miles and the rear rotors scarred. The rotor is not smooth but has ridges from the damage.

2009 cobalt ss with disc rear brakes. Mileage 16588.the rear brakes are getting extremely scored (look like a record with groves) and it sounds like the parking brake is dragging. I noticed this started 2 days ago when it felt like the parking brake was still engaged when i went to pull out of a parking spot. The rear of the car squatted down, to me indicate the brake was hung up.then i heard a "twang" sound followed by a pop.it sound like a bring that was hung up finally let loose.after that incident i started to notice that at speed less than 10 mph you get a noticeable scraping sound from the rear brakes.it sound similar to when you turn rotors on a brake lathe.

Rear brakes wearing.

Reason for inspection was due to rear brake grinding sounds. After 12,000 miles the rear brake pads were completely gone, and the rear rotors severely grooved and warped. Gm agreed that there was a problem and replaced the pads and rotors under warranty stating that they've seen it on 3 others and were taking the same action.

Noticed multiple times that my parking brake seemed to "hang up" when released.took to dealer and they found nothing wrong .i am at approx 10,500 miles now and have no parking brake to hold my car. I was told both the inner pads on both sides for my rear brakes were gone and will need the rotors replaced also.have yet to have brakes due to lack of available parts to replaced them.

Rear brakes wear down to quickly.. I have had only 20,000 km on it and one day i was going to bring my kid into day care with it.. Put on the on hand brake.. And then my car started to roll back with my kid in it... Almost brand new car.. Who would of thought my brakes would have been already worn out.. My kid almost gotten to an accident because of this... Now an other thing.. We have to pay new pads every 20,000 km? that is just insane.. Again.. I see repetitive post on here with comments they have the inside pad worn out to the metal and the outside one to 70%.. I have never changed the front ones once yet.. And they are still at 65%.. Now where is the logic in all this??? front ones should be more badly hurt then that.. Also the back brakes eats my rotors like crazy too.. Guess what more money... Arrrggg.. This is really a safety issue and i think a recall should be made on this.. Thank you for listening.

Rear brakes are wearing too fast.

My car has only 11,000 miles on it and the rear are brakes are warped, which in turn causes my car to not stop as fast it should. The rotors are all warped and the pads are very cheap. I called gm and they told me that the brakes are covered to 12,000 miles, but only 12 months. It's been 14 months and they won't even help me out. This problem occurs very often and i am afraid i am going to get into an accident.

Rear brakes wearing out after 4000-5000 miles. New at 0, changed at 5044, now bad again at 10,600 miles. Many many more people reporting same thing at www.cobaltss.net.

Noticed parking brake not holding anymore.then checked rear brakes and found rear passenger side inner brake pad (not the outer pad) completely worn out....all other pads on car have atleast 70% pad left.never seen anything like this before with this low of mileage with not being driven in any winters.hope there is a fix for this!may be proportion valve design problem?

I last checked my brakes when i took off my snow tires in march with 18,000 miles on my car.everything looked fine, front and rear pads looked almost new with plenty of meat on them.in july, i noticed that the rear brakes were starting to groove, so i mentioned this to the dealer when i went in for a recall and they resurfaced them for me (22,885 miles).i asked about the pads and they told me that they had looked at them and they were fine and everything looked normal.in october, i noticed the grooving coming back.i took it back to the dealer, and they charged me to replace the rear disks and pads at 29,170 miles (they did throw in the rotors for free due to the abnormal wear).after the service, they gave me the old rear pads as per my request.upon receiving them, i couldn't help but notice that the inner rear pad, which had been wearing identically to the outer rear pads when i checked at 18,000 miles, were worn almost to the backing plate!the outer pads still had 1/4" material left, so it seemed clear that something was not right.the dealer could find no reason for this wear and stated that everything was normal besides the brake wear.it seems incredible that a front-heavy, front-drive car would wear through its inner rear brake pads while its front pads (which do most of the braking) and outer rear pads still have plenty of life left without there being some kind of problem.i still have the pads and also have pictures.i am concerned that if these pads wear down so quickly, i could be put in a situation where i unexpectedly have no e-brake and compromised braking ability despite frequent inspections.i am also concerned that gm is more interested in selling me parts than in diagnosing and correcting the root of the problem.i have heard from the both chevy dealers and other owners that this is a somewhat common problem with my car, and i would like to see it resolved.thank you.

Rear brake pads are no good and need to be replaced. I have 15xxx miles and i am a very good driver and never have abuse the car. It is being replaced under gm warranty gm stated that all cobalts ss from 08-09 have this problem.

Had tires rotated at dealer, they found rear brake pads worn out completely and rotor scored after only 6000 miles. Have found many other owners with same problem. Dealer claims it was caused by driving with the e brake on. They refused to repair unless paid, claims warranty does not cover pads wearing out unusually too soon.

I googled how to take it out and that worked, we jumped the car thinking it was the battery, but without the key in the ignition, the lights and electrical allturned on. This tells me that the car's ignitor/shifter was stuck in the "on" position. It could have been a dangerous situation if i were anywherebut home.

Rear brakes sequel really bad at times after driving for a while car has less then two thousand miles also on the 20th of september the shifter linkage broke and was not able to put car in gear.

Shifting i threw the gears quickly to get up to speed of traffic. The shift linkage breaks and car is either stuck in gear or neutral with no acceleration causing traffic to break heavy or accident behind vehicle.replace under warranty with similar parts but still same plastic ends and clips should me metal on drive line parts.

The passenger seat belt light stay on all the time every once in awhile it may go off but it comes back on

Rear brake caliper piston dragging causing excessive inner pad wear. Rear brakes freeze up. Damaged rear rotors. Inadequate brake pedal operation.

Rear brakes wear out very fast for a new car, also very noisy and destroy my rotors. Outter pad seems fine, inner pad is deteriorating at an alarming rate.

About the third time that i have had to replace the rear brakes with in less than 30000 miles. The parking brake does not hold the car. The pads wear uneven, only the interior pad is being worn. Gm dealership continues to state that this is normal wear, which is impossible. And braking performance is compromised by this uneven and premature wear of the rear brakes.

I purchased my 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss sedan a little over a year ago. Within the first several months, the emergency brake started to get extremely loose. It than completely stopped holding within 6 months and 40,000 total miles. After this incident, the rear brakes and rotors began to prematurely wear out extremely quickly. Since these are not coveredunder any warranty and dealerships refuse to fix the issue for free, it's very costly out of pocket for the repairs. I can't park anywhere near on or a hill, due to the emergency brake being completely broken. And the rear brakes and rotors need either repaired or resurfaced constantly every several thousand miles. My other major issue is with the tpms (tire pressure monitoring system) this has been giving me an error constantly for around 10,000 miles, on how it needs to be serviced. My car is garage kept with maintenance done on time, and well taken care of.

I was driving the other day and noticed that one of my back brakes was sticking and so i took a look at it and fluid level was fine and there was no air in the brake line. I feel the cause of this is bad calipers and some others i have talked had the same issue.

Rear brakes wear out way too quickly

Rear brakes noisy and pit very easily.

Brake pads and rotors did not last. My brakes needed replacing way earlier than they should. It's a safety hazard.

I drive a 2009 chevy cobalt ss, manual transmission when i parked at a friends apartment complex i applied my e-brake on a slight hill and the brake did not hold at all. I had to re park my vehicle on a completely flat surface and then place it in first gear. A few days later i decided to test something. So i parked my car on a flat surface and engaged the e-brake. The lever was able to be pulled all the way up with very little resistance. I then got out of my vehicle and was able to push my vehicle forward with little resistance. I then took my vehicle to the dealership and they fixed it under warranty. I then began to apply the e-brake and put my car in first gear every time i park.then a few months ago, about on 01/05/2014 i experienced the similar issue. I noticed that i was able to pull my e-brake lever all the was up with little resistance. I then parked my car with it in neutral and the e-brake engaged and was able to push the car forward with very little effort.the dealership stated that the part is no longer under warranty and that they would not fix it for free.while looking online i noticed that this is a common problem with this vehicle. I found that the brake cable get stretched out very easily and that one of the two brake cables is often more stretched than the other.

Shortly after buying this car, the parking brake stopped working completely. The rear calipers have locked up and do not do anything when the handle is pulled up. This is a terrible design which causes, at best an inconvenient, and at worst, possibly dangerous situation as, for a car equipped with a manual transmission, there is no park to put the car in so i have to block the wheels when parking until i can get this problem fixed. The gm dealer said this is a common problem but there is no permanent fix. How can so many people have this problem but nothing is being done about it? what if i had parked on a hill and my car rolled down into another vehicle or a pedestrian?

The rear brake caliper seized and caused me to lose all rear brakes.the rear brake pads will wear down to bare metal on the inside so no wear bar notifies the driver you have an issue till you no longer have rear brakes. This could cause an accident!

With just over five thousand miles on the car the rear brake pads are grinding. The of the rear rotors has deep grooves. When it is wet its extremely hard to stop. I almost hit the vehicle in front of me when i was on an exit ramp because the vehicle wouldn't stop.

I had extremely premature back brake wear on my 2009 cobalt ss turbocharged.

Brakes squeak hard when coming to a stop and continue to squeal until car is fully stopped. Took car to dealership under warranty and was told there was nothing to do a year later brakes still squeak nearly everytime i brake. New brake pads are needed!!!!!!

Normal driving lead up to the extremely premature failure of the rear rotors and brake pads, increasing stopping distances which could result in a crash. I took my car to the chevrolet dealer and, though at only 25,000 miles, they said i needed to *replace*, not resurface the rotors. 25k miles! to remedy the problem, i had to find and purchase higher-quality rotors and brake pads and had to pay to get them installed. I believe this surprising and extraordinarily early failure--even though it may fall under "maintenance"-- should be investigated.

Rear brakes are wearing too fast.

My rear brakes on my 09 cobalt ss are wearing unevenly. My right side rear brake pads are completely used up and as a result havebegun to grind on to the rotors and caused them to form pits, and or grooves. Very disappointing.

The rear brakes on the 2008-9 cobalt ss are causing rotor scoring at 400+ miles. The pads are too aggressive or the rotors are too soft and the rotors are being destroyed which could lead to brake failure if not replaced.

My car has very low kms just over 1000kms and my rear brakes are already noisy and the rotors scored.

I have a 2009 chevy cobalt ss.i bought it in march 09.the very first couple of days, i had a cracked turbo cooler and had to have something else major replaced.then after 24k miles, i had to have the rear brakes and rotors replaced.now at 31k miles, my srv brake system light is coming on.what is going on with the brakes on my car???

2009 chevrolet cobalt ss, rear brake disc heavy scored , grooved, cupped especially inside of discs. 13,000 miles on car and dealer said tough luck not covered under warranty and they haven't heard about it before. That's a flat out lie, i also have an official complaint logged with gm, they called me back with a reference number and said they would look into it but have not heard back in over a week now. There is a major safety issue going on here and they do know about it. Either the metal of disc is incorrect or pads are not compatible or defective calipers- hydraulic system.

Rear brakes grinding and squealing i am in fear of my life with all the car recallsbrakes are not something to mess with...i am afraid to drive my new gm cobalt ss for fear of an accident and failing brakes !

My cobalt ss t/c has 9000 miles on it and i have been experiencing a very loud squeal coming from the front brakes since 5000 miles. Rotors were turned by dealership and pads replaced yet the squeal remains. A squeal so loud it can't be ignored yet gm states in a bulletin released recently that this is normal for high performance brakes. Gm needs to be held responsible for the hundreds of complaints of this braking system in recent months. Thank you

I bought a 2009 chevy cobalt ss used with 9000 miles on it.from the day i bought it i consistently heard rear brake noise whenever i stopped the car.there is excessive pad wear on the rear brakes at 11000 miles now.way too much wear than normal.deep scoring in the rotors. Took the car to the dealership i purchased it from and they resurfaced the rotorsbut the problem was still there after i drove the car home from the shop.so far nothing has been done to correct this problem by the dealership of chevy.

Within the first 15000 miles of my car the rear brakes failed.it was metal on metal. Reading the forums on cobalts ss i'm not the only one that had rear brake failure within 15000 miles.i do not race the car, and most of my miles are highway.i believe there may be a factory defect.

My rear brakes on my 2009 cobalt ss with just over 17000 miles on it were completely gone when i took the car to the dealership on tuesday july 28th of 2009.i first noticed some unusual noise coming from the rear of the vehicle at around 15000 miles.at first the noise was sporadic and i was not concerned with it but it soon developed into a constant friction type noise that could not be ignored.after leaving the vehicle with the dealership all day they found the cause of the problem.my rear brakes were metal to metal with the rotors.the service employee asked me if i e-brake slide the car, since i was not exactly familiar with the term he had to clarify its meaning.i told him i am not an e-brake sliding kind of guy and asked him to check the ware on the tires if he did not believe me because it sounds like performing a maneuver like that would cause the tires to have bald spots.we the service people could not find any bald spots they ruled the brake as a defect and covered them under warranty.i just find it unusual that the rear brakes would do this so early in the life of the vehicle when the front brakes look like they have barely been touched.if i had been taking a turn or having to brake in an emergency i don't know what all could have happened when i have rear metal to metal instead of the oem brake pads to protect me.

I noticed that the rear brake rotors were slightly scored when i got the car from the dealership new, i didn't think much of it since i was excited to get the car. They also make noise then applying the brakes. I've noticed to that some times after driving and parking, i can smell burning brake pad material. I currently have about 2500 miles on the car and the rotors have scored more considerably. I believe that the pads and rotors won't make it another 2500 miles without being replaced. After searching the internet i found that others are having this same issue with their cars. The car is a 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss sedan. I found that this issue affects the ss sedan and ss coupe alike. It would be nice if gm would issue a recall on this, as this could pose a potential safety issue down the road.

I just bought a 2009 cobalt ss that only has 3289 miles on it and the rear brakes are already going bad, and the rear rotors are getting deep gouges. This could be a very bad problem. Would hate to see this turn into another toyota thing specially when the ss is such a great car. I think a recall should be done and better rotors and pads should be put on the ss cobalt.

Rear brakes failing on a 2009 cobalt ss squealing and grinding feeling like they are not going to stop...after toyota i am afraid to drive this vehicle.

I drive a 2009 cobalt ss. When putting the car in reverse and backing up i notice a loud screechy sound when applying the brakes. I brought it to the dealer and they said this was normal. Recently i looked on threads and it turns out lots of other people are having the same problem. I also see that the brakes are wearing out alot faster in the rear.

Rear brakes disc'sgrooving at 4000 miles . I've owned the car since new so i can say for sure that there hasn't been any abuse to the brakes.

Brakes on a 2009 and 2008 chevy cobalt ss turbocharged.failing prematurely.i have 7500 miles and already have scored, fading brake performance, front and rear.

My brakes vibrate and have deep grooves in them and i almost got turned down for repairs because they thought it was from improper use of my vehicle.

Service brakes, hydraulic.

I have a 2009 chevy cobalt ss that was purchased new in july 2009.the car has approximately 8000 miles on it. My concern, like many other cobalt owners, is the premature wearing of the rear brake rotors.i noticed the rear brakes starting to wear out around 5000 miles. The rear rotors have deep gouges in the face of the rotor.they are now starting to squeal when coming to a stop.this appears to be severe, premature brake wear, especially since the front brakes should be doing most of the stopping.

I have a 2009 cobalt ss and the rear brakes are already failing after a couple thousand miles of use on the vehicle. Gm needs to replace these rear brakes with a better quality product.

I have a 2009 chevy cobalt ss. At approx. 4000 miles the car was taken to the local chevy dealer due to the rear brake rotors deeply grooved. The dealer turned the rotors and reinstalled the brakes. At approx. 7000 miles the rotors are starting to grove again. The dealer replaced the rotors after a lengthy conversation with alot of reluctance. The dealer states and has a bulletin for gmc that noise and squeal are typical with a high performance brake system. Please note it's not the squeal that concerns me it's the deep grooving of the rear brake rotors. Although it hasn't turned into a safety problem yet it is a concern. I hope you will investigate this problem before it becomes another toyota and people are hurt or possibly killed be cause of prematurely grooving and wearing of the rear brakes on this car.

My rear brakes rub.they are very loud and i only have 7,000 miles on it.there are marks in them.i was told that is normal.i did not know that chevy would install brakes that are loud and fail as normal.

I have a 2009 cobalt ss that i bought new and before i had the first oil change at 5000 miles i was having brake squealing the dealer looked at it and said its normal iv had it at 2 different dealers several times and nothing has been done, i now have 26000 mile and no back brakes rotors are badly scorn, something has too be done with this.

Rear brakes wear very fast and unevenly, thus destroying rotors. Produces loud squealing and reduced breaking ability. Parts are not available from chevy and this is a known problem within the cobalt community.

I've owned my new cobalt ss for 5 months now and the rear brakes are already shot and the rotors are ribbed.car has 13k on the odometer and i don't road race the car.just daily driving.they also do not stop in the rain!!!

Brakes failed, slid in the snow and hit the passenger rear rim against the curb. This even lead to the rim being replaced, along with the axle. After the car was fixed, i took the car back to the dealer where it was looked over too see if there were any manufacturer's defaults. Then i was told they could do nothing for me because they only had a 12 month/12,000 mi. Warranty, and my car was 17 months old and had 19,200 mi., so i had to file a complaint with general motors. I then replaced the rotors and pads around the entire car, out of pocket.

Rear brakes have worn out way pre-maturely on my new 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss turbo.my rear rotor is almost completely gone and rusted over.it grinds, and squeals really bad, and i just hit 25k miles.

Rear brakes wearing.

2009 chevy cobalt super sport rear brakes wearing down too quickly. Only lasted 10,000 miles to which i was told had to be replaced at the cost of 470 dollars. Remaining front brakes had more than 60 percent of life. Rear brakes were completely gone. Rear brake caliper failure is reason, but chevrolet refuses to admit fault.

480 miles rotors replaced 1200 miles brakes bad againsquealing and grinding i am in fear everytime i drive it of brake failurethis should be brought to the attention of cnn and the bbb.

Rear brake rotors scored horribly with only 10k miles.

1. Car is a daily driver, so no abuse or anything.2. Rear brakes are squealing again after being replaced once (pads and rotors replaced by dealership)3. The rotors and pads have been replaced once, but it's happening again.

My original complaint is 10263782. I now have to have the rear brake pads replaced again. Went from new to 3/32 in less than 4000 miles. In less than 12,000 miles the rear inner pads have been replaced twice and the rotors resurfaced once.

This has been an ongoing problem for over a year now. I take my vehicle to the dealer and tell them the rear brakes are locking up and they respond with "this is caused by driver abuse, you have been powersliding it" i have had it to three different dealers. The rear brakes have been replaced 3 times within 9 months and are now needed again. Chevrolet states they are not willing to fix the problem.

The rear brake rotors on my 2009 chevy cobalt ss are wearing and grooving excessively.since the car was new they would squeak loudly and i noticed the deep recesses after only 1000 miles.i've been to two dealerships and they told me this was normal and it was how it was designed, one even said it was to keep rust of the rotor!

Rear disc brakes on my 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss turbocharged have failed after only 15,000 miles.this has caused a significant safety concern.the disc brakes have since worn into the rotors, causing property damage.on two occasions, i visited a chevrolet dealership and asked about the squeaking in the brakes.on both occasions, i was told that "under certain...conditions, occasional brake squeal, squeak, or other noise may be heard..."[chevrolet #08-05-22-004: information on brake squeal/squeak noise - (jul 15, 2008)][xxx][xxx]

Rear brakes on my 09 ss cobalt were grooved so i had the dealer look at them, they shaved them down and did not replace them which they should, these brakes constantly grind and squeak even though its a brand new car. My brakes on my 2000 impala are fine but for some reason the brakes on the cobalt grind and make lots of noise and don't seem healthy.

Bought my 09 cobalt ss with less than 1,000 miles and my rear brakes squeal and grind horribly with only 11,500 miles.

I have a 2009 chevy cobalt ss and my rear brakes have failed- at 15000 i brought the car to the dealership and they said its still within factory spec- at 26000 my rear brakes are completely shot and worn down to the metal and i had to replace my calipers as they were sticking- currently in the shop to get fixed, will see if this happens again.

Purchased car brand new, have approx 10k miles on it.rear brake calipers seem to not release fully- can be heard grinding when reversing and screeching when gently braking while moving forward.rear brake pads are wearing unevenly so that the outside pad is scoring the rotor and wearing much faster than the inside.possible that the slider pins on the caliper are not lubricated?i've had my local chevy dealership where i purchased the vehicle look at it, they wrote it off as brakes being a "wear&tear" item.rear brakes only account for 20% or less of the full braking of the vehicle.why is it that my front brakes are fine and my rears almost need to be replaced already?

Wearing of rear brakes.this includes deep scoring of the rotor and brake pad as well as loud grinding when stopping.this has been ongoing since 100 miles.i am now at 5k miles and have seen a few cars with the same problem.pads and rotors need to be replaced and an alignment done.

My 2009 chevy cobalt ss turbocharged has rear disc brakes that are wearing prematurely, screeching/squeaking noises are occurring. My car has not been in any accidents and i've driven it from ann arbor, mi to lake orion, mi countless times for work and school. The front brakes work great but the rear ones are causing me trouble. Please address this issue, thank you much-

Full rear brake replacement at 17k.warranty only covered caliper replacement.

Brake pads wear at an extraordinary rate. They have also gouged the rotors. This is on a brand new 2009 chevy cobalt ss, less than 9000 miles on the car (purchased in april). The brakes continually squeak, and have done so since i picked up the car. The dealership explained it was a "break-in" period, but clearly it shouldn't last this long. The squealing, in addition to being annoying, may pose a safety risk due to the accelerated pace at which they brake system wears. I noticed after a car/wheel wash, the noise dissipates, but returns soon thereafter. I'm concerned about the longevity of the brake system.

The rear brake rotors are showing deeper than normal grooves at less than 4000 miles.pads showing premature wear. Front rotors are nice and smooth.

My vehicle is a 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss coupe purchased new in march of 2009.after 15,000 miles (about a year's worth of driving), the rear brake rotors were pitted and scored, and when the brakes were applied a metal-on-metal grinding noise would occur.also, after getting wet from driving in the rain, then allowing to vehicle to rest for a short period of time, enough rust would build up on the rear brakes that a copious amount of throttle would be needed to break free the pads from the rotors to move the vehicle forward.after taking the car to the selling dealer for inspection/repair, i was told this part was a wearable item and not covered under my manufacturer's warranty.i explained that most all owners of cobalt ss models between the 2008 - 2010 model years were experiencing similar rear brake issues, but was told that did not matter.the parts were not covered under warranty, and if i would like them repaired/replaced, i would have to pay for the parts and labor.

Rear brakes sequel really bad at times after driving for a while car has less then two thousand miles also on the 20th of september the shifter linkage broke and was not able to put car in gear.

Uneven and excessive wear on the rear brake pads and rotors.when the dealership pulled the pads there where chunks of metal that appeared to be rotor material embedded in the pads.

Bought my 09 cobalt ss tc sedan with 3500 miles on it.rear rotors already had grooves at that mileage.my car is at 8700 miles now with both rear brake calipers having to be replaced along with deeper grooves in rear rotors and squeaking from the rear brakes.the failing rear brakes caused my emergency brake to fail.the emergency brake failed while on a hill and i walk outside to find my car under my girlfriends truck!(e-brake engaged and in reverse)this was fixed with the calipers being replaced, i still need to have my rotors worked as they are already to this point.i was fortunate to be parked on a not so steep of a hill, couldn't imagine someone in the same situation living in a hillyregion.(lawsuit waiting to happen).

I bought a used 2009 cobalt ss. The car had 3200 miles on it. After bring the car home i found some pitting in the rear rotors. After driving the car to 3800 miles it had gotten beyond the point where the rotors could be turned. I took it in to the dealer and was told this is normal everything is fine. Not being born yesterday i know this is not the case. After fighting with the dealer for over an hour i left mad and with no fix for the problem. I have since replaced the rotors with drilled and slotted rotors, and ceramic pads but now it seem as if the rear calipers are not releasing all the way which is causing the car to make rather loud noises while drive. Once again no help from the dealership as they claim everything is normal and everything will be fine. This needs to be fixed as i know of at least a dozen people in my area with the same problem. I fear that if this is not corrected quickly some one may get hurt, or worse yet killed toparts failure.

Rear brakes and rotors bad , severe groves in rotors .

Car had approximately 15,000 miles on it when the back brake pads wore out. Took the vehicle to my mechanic he said something was not right and i should take it to the dealer and get it fixed for free due to faulty install.dealer assured me there was nothing wrong and charged me a 60 dollar diagnostic fee.why would the back brake pads wear out before the front..and why at 15,000 miles with conservative driving? something is clearly faulty with either the brake pads themselves or how they are being installed.

Rotors are scored and need replaced on rear after only 15k miles.

The contact owns a 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss. The contact stated that when trying to decelerate he noticed that the brakes would make a loud scraping noise. He then inspected his vehicle and noticed that the rear rotors were making the noise. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 3500.

Vehicle rolls for/aft when "parked"...

Premature wearing of rear brakes.

Rear brakes and rotors shot at 12k miles on a 09 cobalt ss.

Front & rear rotors scored severely with deep grooves throughout.the car has less than 12,000 miles.braking is severely hindered during wet conditions and periodically the brakes are noising making "screeching" sounds as though metal to metal is touching during braking.problem is most likely due to brake pads being far to hard of a material causing excessive wear on the rotors.

Rear brakes on vehicle begin by squeaking regularly.upon inspecting them at roughly 6000 miles on the brand new car, the inner brake pads are completely worn while the outer pads are nearly new (as they should be).one possible cause of this is that the parking brake spring is not strong enough to hold the inner pads from rubbing the rotors when the parking brake is disengaged.gm should recall this brake issue as it will continue to cost buyers hundreds every few thousand miles, when all that is needed is likely a spring with a better spring rate.

My car has grooves because of sub par brake pads in rear and my rotors will have to be replaced due to cheap pads chewing deep grooves on a 09 cobalt ss with 20k. Fronts have ceramic pads so no wear at all. Mechanic said they used expensive ceramic up front and cheap semi metallic in back and now the only fix is new ceramic pads but the rotors are to far gone to be resurfaced. Cheap gm factory flaw which should require a recall to replace.

The rear brakes of my 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss are worn down themetal after approx. 15 000km. The inside pads was metal on metal, and the out side pads were found to be still 80%. All parts are being covered under warranty, but many people have had the same problem after all parts were replaced. Rear brake pads and rotors are being replaced.

I purchased my 2009 chevy cobalt ss/tc in early june of 2010. It was a gm certified used car. When i inspected the car before purchasing i noticed that the brakes were heavily worn and i let the salesmen know about it. He told me that there was almost 70% left on the pads and everything checked out fine . So i did the dumbest thing i could do and took his word for it. After about 5 months and 4000 miles later my rear brakes start making a scraping noise while in reverse and while light braking around corners mostly out of the passenger side.. I took it in for maintenance expecting some kind of manufacturer defect but instead i'm accused of bad driving andletting my e-brake drag. The issue was that the rear calipers were sticking and not retracting properly and the pistons inside were bent causing uneven pad wear. Both sides moisture boots on the pistons looked like they were pinched and broken during the factory installation. So now here i am with a bill for almost $1000 dollars for rear pads, rotors and calipers and on a car that is just over 2 years old with almost 2 years on a factory bumper to bumper warranty. I'm sorry but the calipers to me are a mechanical defected part and should be covered under warranty.

Premature rear brake wear.

The contact owns a 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss turbo. The contact stated his rear brake pads were prematurely wearing out rapidly. The rotors and brake pad never made any noise alerting the contact there was something wrong. When the vehicle was being serviced the mechanicshowed him how the rotors and brake pads were worn. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 31,000 and the current mileage was 40,000.

Extreme rear brake pad wear and damaged rear brake rotors after only 3,500 miles. 2009 cobalt ss sedan.

Had to replace rear brakes on 2009 cobalt ss after ~ 12000 miles. Rotors had to be replaced. Made very noticeable screeching and grinding sounds. Brake performance had decreased very much even before they were replaced, decrease in performance of brakes at about ~7000-8000 miles.

The rear brakes failed on my car at around 28,000 miles. As soon as i got the new ones installed they still are terrible, i do not understand why there would be such brakes that fail so early and could cause harm to people. There needs to be a recall on these brakes, they are entirely too unsafe.

The contact owns a 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss.while drivingapproximately 35 mph pressure was applied to the brake pedal the contact heard a grinding noise.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the failure was due to excessive braking. The dealer also confirmed that the rear rotors and brake pads needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired.the failure and current mileages were 21,000.

Premature rear brake wear. Inner rotor surface has grooves and uneven pad wear. Noticed at 4500 miles.

Brake pad failure: at routine service, 17,665 miles, dealer found rear, inner brake pads excessively worn.right pad was gone, rotor being scored. Left was less than 5% remaining.other pads within normal limits. Replacement pads are not in stock at gm, back-ordered.

I have a manual cobalt ss 2009 and the emergency brakes are not working. I have to have the emergency brake to park my car. I been having to rest my car in a gear so it will not go anywhere.

I own a 2009 chevy cobalt ss/tc with less than 15k miles on it my rear brakes have become completely ineffective with unusual wear properties to the inside pad.this is the second time it has happened, and this time the pad material separated from the backing plate on the drivers side making the car pull towards the right anytime i slow down and lock the passenger side rear tire despite having abs anytime it rains.

The contact owns a 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss. The contact stated that while driving at highway speeds, the front and rear brakes pulsated when they were depressed and the steering wheel vibrated. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that there was nothing wrong. The vehicle had not been repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 16,000.

Rear brakes wearing out after 4000-5000 miles. New at 0, changed at 5044, now bad again at 10,600 miles. Many many more people reporting same thing at www.cobaltss.net.

While driving down the highway, doing approximately 60 mph, my 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss shed it's inner left rear brake pad, causing the brake pedal to sink to the floor, when pressed, to no avail.luckily, no accident resulted.upon inspection, the left inner pad was completely gone, while the left outer, and both right rear pads were well within normal limits.the gm dealership refused to fix this problem, stating that it was "normal wear and tear".a mechanic at the dealer whispered to me that it was a failure that was likely caused by the caliper not retracting properly, and, while it should be covered under warranty, there was nothing he could do.this failure occurred at about 12,000 miles, while the vehicle was only 4 months old.the rear brake pads, as well as, the left rear rotor had to be replaced.

I have a 2009 cobalt ss.the rear brake rotors started scoring around 5,000 miles and and rear pads were completely worn away with 19,800 miles.

Had only 2000 miles on my 09 cobalt and rear brakes started to score from inner brake pads. Dealership wouldn't fix due to bulletin gm sent out not to replace. Had to replace brake pads on own. Car would have grinding noise from rear before replacing brake pads.

Rear brakes wear out too quickly, horrible scoring on the rotors. Noise issues.

Rear brakes have extreme gouging after only 7,000 miles and are starting to squeal and you can tell they are sticking to the rotors and not fully releasing which can turn into a big liability issue. Gm needs to replace the rear rotors with a quality product that can withstand the rear pads used.... Or really needs to change to brembo rotor/caliper like the front.

Inside rear brake pads completely worn through at around 20,000 miles.dealer would not cover brakes so new aftermarket pads were purchased and installed.

2009 cobalt ss rear brake rotors have big grooves in them dealer cut them once and then they got all grooved again.

Rear brakes on 2009 completely worn after only 35,000 km.

A terrible grinding coming from rear brakes. The brakes wear out too quickly (and the rotors are being scored at 100mile-20,000mile cars)also inside rear pads start to get noisy.

Rear brakes and rotors exhibit excessive wear. Rotors grooved and pads worn on inside of rotors only. Finally had rotors and pads replaced @ 19,800 miles.

Premature rear brake rotor wear.

I bought a used cobalt ss from a dealer in memphis on july 15, and drove it home to kansas, about 900 miles. It had about 3300 miles on it, and had been in gm fleet service. It now has 4600 miles. The rear brake rotors are scored badly on both sides, and my local dealer will not do anything for me, calling it "wear". In my opinion, this is an unacceptable wear rate on brakes, which is a safety concern. I have been in touch with a number of other cobalt ss owners with similar problems.

The rear brakes failed on my vehicle.after taking it to a mechanic for inspection the rear brake calipers did not have lubrication on the sliding pins which resulted in the rotors failing and the brake pads being destroyed.my rear breaks no longer work.after researching online this is a defect on all 2008-2009 chevy cobalt ss models.

1)daily driving, 90 percent highway, 10% city.no abnormal driving leading to situation.2) very pitted and worn rear disc rotors, loud and becoming dangerous.3) new rotors, aftermarket, new pads, aftermarket.

On my 09 chevy cobalt ss the rearbrakes got very loud. The failure was the inner rear brake pads went metal to metal by 8000 miles from new. The outer pads were like new. Dealership resurfaced the rotors and replaced the pads. They had the car 5 days and gave me a rental. 2000 miles later and the brakes are getting loud again.

Rear brakes make scratching sounds and the inside of both rear rotors have been scored deeplythis was noticed at 5000 miles when i bought the car and has got much worse at 17,000 miles. Also took it to my dealer and the would not replace anything.

Uneven rapid rear brake pad wear and scoring of rotors.the problem is very common with 2008 and 2009 ss models.

Uneven brake pad wear on the rear brakes. Squeaking and squealing persists...dealer has turned rotors and replaced pads...problem persists.

Severe grooving on rear brake rotors after approximately 8,000 miles.inboard brake pads are wearing faster than outboards.also a noticeable grinding noise upon applying brakes.this issue was brought to the attention of manufacturer's dealer.i was informed that this was a normal condition and no repair is needed.front brake rotors and pads appear to be wearing normally.vehicle currently has 14,000 miles and rear brake issue appears to be becoming more severe.

My 2009 cobalt ss has 10,800 miles and at 7k miles, the rear brakes began to squeak. You can feel that the rotors in the rear are grooved terribly, and the inside of the rear pads are even worse. The car is at the dealer now getting this fixed after i had already taken it to another dealership and they wrote it off as "wear and tear". Rear rotors do not get worn out in 10k miles.

Rear brakes are grooved, grinding, and squeaking.do not stop the car well.

I purchased a new 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss sedan.the car has barely broken 10k miles.the brakes are wearing abnormally fast.i am very gentle with them always, and they are very worn already.pulling up to stop signs or traffic lights is ridiculous.the screeching from the brakes is loud.i have never had brakes go out this early on any of my other vehicles.

Rear brakes wore too quickly for a front wheel drive car that only have 10,000 miles on it.

Grooving or rear rotors, and pad squealing @ 12k miles.

Warranty, and my car was 17 months old and had 19,200 mi. I then replaced the rotors and pads around the entire car.

2009 cobalt ss - rear brakes worn. The dealer has ordered new rotors but not pads.

Rear brakes are dragging on the rotor and grinding at stops.

Rear brakes are wearing down unusually fast, particularly on the inside surface where it is hard to see. Brake rotors are grooving severely. Dealer has resurfaced the rotors and sanded the pads once already less than 4000 miles ago, and now they will have to be replaced. Clearly, failing brakes is a serious issue.

I have a 2009 cobalt ss, and am having a problem with the rear brakes grinding, and making noise. I have had them checked at 6,000 miles and the rotors and pads were already real bad. Now at 11,000 miles had it checked out again and the inside pad is completely metal to metal and the out side pad is still like new. I think there are stuck calipers and making only the one pad do all the work. It is starting to have decreased braking ability and gm still wont warranty it.

Rear brakes on a 2009 cobalt ss turbo score and grind within 10,000 miles. You have to put after market brakes on the car.

2009 chevy cobalt sedan rear brakes scored(deep groves) after 300 miles.

2009 chevrolet cobalt ss. Sedan. Extreme rear brake pad wear (70%) and rear brake rotor damage after only 4000 miles. Why has nothing been done about all the complaints regarding this serious issue? i do not abuse the car and do not apply hard brakes. I only engage the parking brake when the car is stopped and parked. Investigate, recall and repair.

I have a 2009 cobalt ss. About a couple months ago i started to here some scratching coming from the rear of my vehicle i looked at my breaks and the rotors were damaged i took it to the dealer and they said breaks are not under warranty because its an wearable item and because of the damage to my rotors they were to damaged to cut so i bought new ones with break pads because they were cracked as well i am not the only one with this problem so please look into it.

8k miles, driven normally, 90% freeway.rear brakes scored and grinding since 6000k miles.parking brake does not like to let go when left for more than an hour.awaiting response from shop.

The rear brakes on my 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss are failing at just 2400 miles on the odometer.the inner pads have worn down too quickly, causing excessive grooving on the rotors.this has decreased brakes performance vastly.

The rear brakes started squeaking really badly at 5000 miles on my new 2009 chevy cobalt ss.while performing a tire rotation, i inspected the brakes and rotors for unusual wear.i noticed two really deep grooves/scores on the backside of the driver side rear brake rotor.i took it to the dealership where they agreed that was not normal wear and replaced the rotor. The brakes still squeak but not as bad.it is unfortunate though that i have to drive around in a new car and am embarrassed to come to a stop with all the squealing.i was handed a tsb (#08-05-22-004) stating that squeaking brakes are normal and are not to be repaired.i can assure you that no one told me to expect such awful noises from my new car within the first five months of driving it.

Rear brakes having pre mature wear of the inner pads and severe gouging of the rotors.outer pad was 75% worn and inner pad was 98% worn at 10k miles.

I just bought my car in april of 2009.i own a 2009 chevrolet cobalt ss and i am seeing a fairly quick brake wear rating on the back brakes.upon closer examination, i notice the brakes have some pretty deep groves which i have never seen before on brakes discs on a car.i researched these grooves online and apparently its called "scorching".its what's responsible for wearing the brakes as quickly as they are.it seems too be caused by fragments of metal not filed down on the rear calipers etching out the rear rotors.its also been brought to my attention that the calipers compress the rear rotors harder on the inside of the rotor than the outside.this might be another reason to the scorching.

The inside brake pads on my 2009 cobalt ss turbo chew up way too quickly. They wore out on the inside with less than a year of highway driving. They wear unevenly with the outside brake pads in the rear and the front brake pads, which are still the thickness of new.

Rear brakes on 2009 cobalt ss t/c only 1500 miles on the car and rear rotors are absolutely trashed. Outside pad looks good inside pad is down to the medal.

Rear brakes on my 2009 chevy cobalt ss are [xxx].information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

Brakes started squealing a few months after buying the car brand new.now, about 1.5 years later, they are grinding an excessive amount and their performance has extremely decreased.i fear i will have to change entire rotors and pads to fix this problem out of my own pocket within the next month on good aftermarket parts since the factory can't produce good quality oem parts and general motors doesn't give a flying ****.i informed my local dealer of the problem and they shrugged me off, but only after wanting to charge me $60 to just look at them.i shouldn't have to pay for them to inspect brakes that are faulty in under 2 years, and 20,000 miles; and i also have an extended warranty that i paid for.apparently, it's just mainly the rear brakes that are the issue with these cars, but every owner i know, who hasn't already replaced the brakes with aftermarket performance parts, have the exact same issue, and in some cases, much worse.if the brakes fail within the next month or two and an accident happens(quite possible since rust is appearing on one of my rear rims due to the rotors being scoured so excessively, i fear one of them may let go and snap completely off)before either a recall, or i put aftermarket products on, gm will be facing a lawsuit by yours truly; especially if serious injury occurs.

I have a 2009chevy cobalt ss and the rear brakes are getting grooves in it bad. Only 1500 miles on it when it started. Pads have good amount left but they make this god awful squeal. Like they been driving on them for over 50000k but not even 10000k.

Both rear rotors are heavily scored on the inner and outer sides of the rotor. Dealer calls it handbrake abuse. I never knew that pulling your handbrake when you park the car was abuse.

This is my second complaint on the same problem, see #10278491. Excessive scoring of rear brake rotors. The dealer turned the rotors at 4600 miles, at my cost. Subsequently, chevrolet action center sent me a letter for $100 credit on service. Now at 7500 miles, they look pretty bad again. The dealer agreed this time to warranty pads & rotors, one time only. This is a manufacturing defect causing a safety problem. There have been a number of reports that the caliper pins were not lubricated at the factory, causing binding of the pads on the rotors. Others believe there is a pad/rotor incompatibility issue.

I have a 2009 chevy cobalt ss with excessive rear brake wear on the rotor and pads. The front brakes show normal wear, but the rear rotors have major grooves in the inner surface.

Well, i put in a complaint a while ago about the rear rotors wearing fairly quick.now the rotors need to be completely replaced.the inside part of the rotor is extremely damaged and now braking distance is nearly 1.5 times greater than before.its dangerous.

Rear brakes failing far to quickly, less than 23,000km, results in very loud screeching/grinding noise.

Have 2009 chevy cobalt ss and has had to turn my rear rotors for the 5th time since i got this car brand new, at 36,000 miles now.

I have a 09ss/tc and i have a problem with my back rotors with lines and grooves in them. I only have 4000 miles on my car now. I took it to the dealership at 3500 and the shop manager argued with me that it is normal wear and tear and that the back brakes are "aggressive" style pads. And he argued that the back do more stopping power than the front. They haven't done anything about this problem yet and i know that many other cars of the same model have this problem. The main mechanic did confirm that it isn't a normal wear but said that the car is too new to anything about it. Please help us out i really don't want this to cause an accident or for me to have to pay for all new rotors and pads at my expense because of their mess up.

The cobalt brakes have always made a screeching sound, which gm has addressed as being normal.chevrolet #08-05-22-004: information on brake squeal/squeak noise - (jul 15, 2008)]however, i had to prematurely replace the rear brakes and have the rotors cut after only 27,039 miles, while the front brakes still had 50% life left.this is not a normal occurrence, since the front brakes should have worn out before the rear ones.while i was able to get 27,039 miles of wear, the fact that there is definitely a defect in the system means there is no guarantee that the condition will not worsen in time.there is also the chance that the system could fail completely causing a serious accident.finally, the screeching sound is getting worse.this sound, along with the brake wear, will virtually reduce the value of the car considerably, making it nearly impossible to trade or sell, unless gm corrects this issue.

Rear brake pads are no good and need to be replaced. I have 15xxx miles and i am a very good driver and never have abuse the car. It is being replaced under gm warranty gm stated that all cobalts ss from 08-09 have this problem.

The stock rotors on my car started getting severely warped within the first 3-4 months of owning the car. The car was brand new when i purchases it. I replaced the brakes after owning the car for 10 months and the car had about 14,000 miles. I showed the dealer the rotors and they resurfaced them. I've been driving the car with new brakes since june 2010, the new brakes are already squeaking and rotors have severe grooves on them. I purchased the car june 2009 brand new.

At 20,300 miles, the inner rear brake pads had worn completely down to the metal and scored the rotors to the point they had to be replaced. The dealership maintains this is normal wear. The front brakes were fine and the outer rear pads while worn, were still within acceptable limits. After seeing numerous complaints on the nhtsa web site (144 out of 168 total complaints, or 86%) nearly identical to mine, this is clearly a glaring safety issue - 144 complaints for a low-volume 2-year old vehicle. I cannot understand why the nhtsa has not initiated an investigation already. Perhaps they are waiting for fatalities caused by this obvious defect before taking action.updated ivoq 12/01/11. 2009 chevy cobalt ss turborear rotors scored badly driver side, inner rotor scored worse, 6,700 miles on the vehicle pads screech also at a stop.

I bought a new 2009 cobalt ss turbo on april 15th 2009, about 8 months later my rear brakes had grooves in the rotors and my left rear caliper was sticking.this caused very poor braking performance.i took the car into the dealer and they had to replace the left rear caliper, new rear pads and they machined the rotors.i have have since had to take the vehicle back into my dealer due to a ring of rust building up on the left rear rotor.i have reason to believe that the rear brakes on these cars have defective parts from the factory.there are a large number of other 2008-2010 cobalt ss owners having these issues.

When braking softly, rear brakes make a loud noise and i've started to notice slightly uneven wear on one of the rear brake pads. Also occasionally while moving in reverse with foot brakes applied i can hear a very very loud sound slightly different and way louder then the sound when moving forward.

Deep groove in rear brakes. They are done at 17,000km.

Making left turn. Wheel turned about 45 degrees and stuck. After coming to a complete stop, i could turn wheel freely. Wheel often slips left or right for no apparent reason, as though it needs an alignment. Only three months and 3,000 miles old.

Rear brakes have been developing grooves being cut into the rotors.makes metal scraping/rubbing/screeching noise during braking.

Wearing of rear brakes.this includes deep scoring of the rotor and brake pad as well as loud grinding when stopping.this has been ongoing since 100 miles.i am now at 5k miles and have seen a few cars with the same problem.pads and rotors need to be replaced and an alignment done.

2009 chevrolet cobalt ss brakes squeak after 2 weeks of owning the vehicle- i cannot step on my brakes without hearing the noise of them squeaking. The noise will not go away!

Rear brakes wore too quickly for a front wheel drive car that only have 10,000 miles on it.

Premature rear brake wear.

No crash, injury's.

2009 chevy cobalt ss 4doorcar has only been put under standard driving conditions city/highway and before 20000 miles the rear brake rotors were groved and warped beyond repair and the inside rear brake pad was down to metal. The outside pad still had over 70% life left on it but was groving the rotor also. Front brakes are fine with no issues.

Brakes squeak hard when coming to a stop and continue to squeal until car is fully stopped. Took car to dealership under warranty and was told there was nothing to do a year later brakes still squeak nearly everytime i brake. New brake pads are needed!!!!!!
