Recently general motors issued a recall on the ignition switch for some of their cars, but it does not include all of the vehicles affected with the exact same problem. Here is a list of cars currently listed, but i want my 2004 chevrolet cavalier added to the recall too: chevrolet cobalt, pontiac g5, saturn ion, chevrolet hhr, pontiac solstice, and saturn sky.many years ago i tried to get a local chevrolet service center to fix the problem in my 2004 chevrolet cavalier. They could not fix it, so we just kept driving the car. Had i known it would affect the air bags getting deployed i would have written to you sooner.this problem needs to get fixed by gm as soon as possible on all models listed including my 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The defect allows the ignition switch to move from "run" to "accessory" if i hit a bump or i use a heavy key chain. That shuts off the engine and may disable the front air bags. The loss of the air bag crash protection is my biggest worry.please help me get this fixed and warn other people who have 2004 chevrolet cavaliers with the same problem.

Horn doesn't work, had it look at by mechanic, he said it had something to do with the airbag. Then had it look at by a steering column mechanic, he said it was the clock spring in the steering column.

While i was driving over a highway at 55 mph under heavy rain conditions, i lost control of my vehicle (chevy cavalier 2004) and had a frontal crash against the concrete median.during the impact, the air bags did not deploy provoking minor injuries in the face to the only occupant of the vehicle.two days after the accident i filled out a report with gmc and they sent an inspector to take the information from the "black box" and some pictures of the final condition of the car.i tried to contact the representative in charge (tracy saverino) for weeks, i left several voice messages to find out what to do with the damaged vehicle, already being repaired by the insurance company.i expressed my concern for keeping this vehicle in operation after the safety system's test in real conditions. Recently i was notified by a letter through the gmc claims department that they are not going to take responsibility for the defective system and they did not give any result of the investigation or explanation of the causes that originated the malfunction.they encourage me to preserve in the immediate post-accident condition the vehicle if i wished to support with evidences my claim when they have the information taken directly from the vehicle which was in the post-accident condition by the day of the inspection.this behavior constitutes a disrespect and is a form of abusive treatment considering that the company was reluctant to answer my phone calls and intentionally protracted the procedure to allow the customer to start with the repairs and dodge the responsibility and conceal a mechanical defect in this vehicle and probably many others with the same component serial number.

Takata recallair bag did not deploy after hitting telephone pole. Snapped in half, car totaled. State road 252 martinsville, indiana.car in motion.

Airbag light comes on at random intervals for about 5 seconds, then turns off. Speed, road conditions, and gear make no difference as to when it comes on. It has come on while turning, while driving in town at 20 mph, while at a complete stop, while going over a bump, and while going 50mph on the highway.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. While driving 40 mph the consumers husband crashed into the back of another vehicle. None of the air bags deployed. The contact suffered injuries to his head, neck and shoulders. The vehicle has not been diagnosed. There were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 81,000.updated 02/1710 the vehicle was totaled. Updated 02/19/10.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that the drivers seat malfunctioned and the air bag did not deploy when a truck crashed into her vehicle from the rear. She also crashed into the vehicle in front of her. The contact and a passenger wereinjured and had to go to the hospital the following day. The police was there but no report was filed. The gm manufacturer was notified and a claim was filed. A representative was scheduled to inspect the vehicle but they never came. The failure mileage was 45,000.updated 03/05/10

Horn won't blow, had it serviced and they said horn was good. They track the situation back to the air bag/horn connection. Never had an accident in this vehicle. So i don't understand why the horn won't blow. The guy that serviced it , said the connection for the horn is connected to the air bag and i would need a new air bag to possible fix this issue. What could i possible do to get this corrected?it's been like this for a couple of years, i've been worried about this issue and getting more worried about it lately.

Vehicle accident with seat and airbag failure on 5-23-08. Reported to gm 5/27/08 case.spoke with gm rep then transferred to local dealership who said he would discuss with district manager.on 1/8/10 i again called for follow-up.the previous case had been closed and a new one opened and i was told i would be contacted.i followed up on 2/16/09 and was told it was being handled by motors liquidation.i expressed my concern was safety based - not money based, still had the vehicle for an investigation.the rep. Explained because the accident occurred prior to the "new" gm they were not concerned about it.i explained the accident date was of no concern to the safety considerations as there are still these types of vehicles on the road.they failed to report to you on two occasions.the bigger issue is gm's policy of reporting and investigating safety issues.if mine is an example, how many other complaints have been ignored or discarded because of the bankruptcy filing?in other words, if there was a problem with the vehicle before then we can assume it may be an issue of recall now regardless of "new" or "old" gm statues.it is very important to me this be taken seriously.we still have the vehicle sitting in our back yard for the purpose of investigating the issue.at some point we need to dispose of it and move on.i just feel a moral obligation - where obviously gm does not.i am happy to give any information or assistance to resolve this matter.please take it seriously - i don't want anyone else to experience the injuries we have - especially if it is preventable.

I'm filing this for my dad. He wouldn't know how to use a computer. A man stole a vehicle and was being chased by police in kansas city when my dad was in the intersection at the wrong time and was hit square on the driver's side of his chevy cavalier. I'm not sure of the year, but it's less than 3 years old. He had his seat belt on, but the air bag never deployed. The crash was severe enough that he has 7 fractured ribs, left pelvic fracture, left acetabular fracture, left tibia/fibular fractures and 2 fractures in the ankle of his left foot. He's still in rehab. I'm not sure the deployment of the airbag would have made a huge difference, but wanted to make sure this was not a consistent problem. I just clicked no on the previous page about release of my dad's information since you'd have to ask him that question. Thanks for looking into this. My number in san antonio is 210-492-7653 (barbara roach).

Vehicle t-boned at 45 mph and front air bags did not deploy. Consumer had the vehicle towed to dealer, andmechanic determinedthatair bag sensor was located inside the front seat belts.

The air bag deactivation device exploded and/ blewout the windshield/cracked the dashboard, and sent metal through the glass door. Manufacturer was contacted. They told the consumer to have the vehicle towed. Consumer was then informed that the problem was not a manufacturer's defect since the air bag didnot deploy.

We have 2 2004 chevy cavaliers. On one of the cavaliers not to long after we bought it, the speedometer went out on it and we couldn't read the mileage on the car. We have tried to buy used ones and put then in the car and that failed and you still can't read the mileage on the car. On the second cavalier the speedometer is acting funny. When the car sets for overnight and the next morning you go and turn it on it says that you are going a high amount of speed, when it has been parked for a long time. It keeps occurring daily, and then sometimes when your driving it will say that your go 0 mph, when you are driving down the highway. We have looked to get these fixed, but the local chevy dealer that we talked to has said that he has had several complaints of this going wrong in the cavaliers and the chevy trucks. Both of my cars have around 74,000 miles on it, and if other people are having the same problem, a recall needs to be issued, and we think the company should pay for it, since it has happened in both cars around the same mileage point.

The instrument cluster board has stopped, working and appears to be an ongoing issue with gm on several models (car and truck) between 1998-2009.also the abs, traction control, service engine lights will not go off.window doors are not working and appears to all related to the cluster panel.i have replaced all abs sensors, new brakes pads, rotors, and even front bearings.the engine itself works great and is fine and appears that gm has done a great job in this part.the cluster panel and wiring is a serious safety issue and needs to be reviewed in these models. Poor ground wiring an cluster panels can cause consumers to spend thousands of dollars in repairs and still resulting in the same problem.cluster panel replacement can be from $300 to $800 depending on your local mechanic. This is a serious issue since abs and traction control are not working due to the long list of issues. I recommend a recall on cluster panels for all cavaliers and modules, wiring as well.

The instrument panel cluster gauges (speedometer; gas gauge; tachometer) started acting crazy and the dials would jump all over the place. Finally, the dials just stopped working. At the same time my inside dome light stopped working. It would go on when the car was not running so it had to be disengaged completely so it would not run down my battery. Right after that my car turned off while being driven and the keys were still in the ignition. (this has happened three times).this vehicle does not appear under any recalls. I called gm directly but was not able to get any resolution due to language barriers (the reps did not speak english). This was reported to car complaints.com and hundreds of reports and complaints have been reported for the same thing (especially the cluster and electrical problems) but no recalls have been issued. These are very expensive items to have fixed and pose serious safety issues. Many, many people need help and no where to turn and gm has ignored these problems with the 2004 cavalier completely. All fuses have been checked and replaced as recommended as well as all other recommendations on how to fix. On behalf of all cavalier owners who have been ignored please, please help!!!!this has also been reported to motortrend.com. Thank you for any help you can offer!!!

So, the problem started about a month ago. I noticed that my speedometer in my cavalier would randomly freeze and stop working. I noticed that once i would turn the car off and then turn it back on it would be fine, and it would work properly for the rest of the day. After about a week of it freezing up like this, i was really getting ticked off. One day it started working fine and for about a week or so it worked perfect with no issues at all. Then about a week ago it really started freaking out. It said i was going 110 when i was only going like 40, and turning the car on and off does nothing. It stays frozen no matter what it do. If i drive on the highway, it actually goes past the gauge limit and points straight down where my odometer is and stays there. It is so annoying! i decided over the weekend i would take it into a mechanic to have it looked at. Do you know what they told me? they told me it would cost $675 to fix it, b/c the whole speedometer needed to be replaced. I can't believe i am going to pay almost $700 to take care of a problem that chevy created.

2 issues.first, temperature gauge read higher and higher each time the car was started until the needle went all the way around to the speedometer and kept the speedometer from reading the speed.entire gauge cluster was replaced.second issue was passenger front seat belt would periodically lock, not allowing the passenger to use the seat belt.

As i was driving down the road the vehicle stopped running and i had to pull over to the side of the road. I then tried to start the car again but it did not start. So i tried again a few more time. The vehicle did startso i took the car in for repairs the next week which was my first attempt. It took 2 more visits to get the car fixed correctly. It turned out to be the ignition switch sensor. Just like the recall by gm. But my model is notincluded, i hope it will be added in the future.

The speedometer on my 2004 chevy cavalier started going wacky.at first it started racing as you were driving.showing 65 or 70 when you were going maybe 40.now it raced past 110 and dropped down between 0 and 110.looking over the different websites, i see this is a common problem, yet it is not on a recall list.why?this can be extremely dangerous, not to mention you are looking for a ticket by guessing how fast you are going.my car only has 54,000 miles on it, and i sure wasn't expecting any major repairs and that mileage.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that the instrument panel failed to function properly. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage and vin were not available.

Speedometer does not register mph, stays at 20 mph when at rest and goes up when car is driven but unknown speed person is driving at.also the temp gauge needle is not even on the area to register the temp of the engine.this is a safety issue and should be recalled.i have heard from my local mechanic that this is a common thing & i have read several posts on line similar to my complaint.please recall this part so that everyone driving this type of vehicle is safe by knowing the temp of their engine & knowing their driving speed.

While driving down the road my speedometer for stuck. I know i was going 60 when it happened because that's what it is stuck at.it isn't the first time this has happened. My car has had multiple problems with the windshield wipers, windows, and engine light.

My 2004 chevy cavalier's speedometer is not working and the local dealer says they would have to send the cluster to a larger shop. I cannot be without my vehicle and it will also cost from 300.00 to 600.00 at the local dealer and there will also be an additional charge at the larger shop.

2004 chevy cavalier, speedometer is crazy1999 chevy cavalier, gas gague is bustedboth repairs are exceedingly expensive/dangerous,would like a recall.

Cluster paneltemp gauge was fluctuating now the gauge is staying in one spot so have no idea if temp is good or not. What if something is wrong with the engine i will not know without this working. Have taken to two garages they both say its the cluster panel. Stationary and while driving ,gage stays the same.this started about a month ago with only 68,500 miles on it.

My car failed to start 8/21/08 so i took it to my mechanic.the car was only 4 years old at the time and was still under my extended warranty thank goodness.he determined it was my ignition switch.since i am the original. Single owner of this vehicle, i knew this was the original ignition switch to the car when purchased new in 2004.my mechanic replaced the switch with a napa oe part.now, on 3/29/11, my car failed to start again and left me stranded.i had to have my car towed to my mechanic and then find a way home from work.i then had to borrow a friend's car just to get to work the next day.as discoverd by my mechanic, it was the ignition switch again.this repair completed on 3/30/11 was with an ignition switch that was purchased from a chevy dealer hoping this will make a difference. I have had several cars and not one time have i ever had to replace an ignition switch in any of them much less twice in just 2 years 3 months like have had to with this car!this repair cost me $280 this time and the incovenience of finding an alternate way to and from work.i am disgusted at the faultiness of this car's electrical system.i have had other electrical issues including having to replace the entire instrument panel when the car was only 2 years old and replacing the electric window switch twice.i truly feel chevy needs to address my issues.

My dashboard doesn't work properly. All of the gauges, with the exception of the odometer, does not work. This includes fuel, speedometer, rpm, and temperature gauges. It started with my temperature gauge. I thought the car was overheating when it really wasn't. Then my fuel gauge went out. Then it was the speedometer and rpm gauge. All of the gauges, except for the rpm, move up and down, but none of them are accurate. The speedometer can get stuck at 0, 60 or move off of the gauge entirely. It is obviously not very safe not knowing how fast you are going, or if your car is overheating or not.it is my understanding the entire dashboard has to be replaced, but i am not 100% certain.

Air bags did notcome out car flipped over twice and there was1 death and 1 injury.

My instrument panel is not working properly.the speedometer was indicating incorrect speeds before it stopped working completely.the gas, rpm, and temperature gauges indicate incorrect information as well.this is a real safety issue.

Dt:while driving the contact's vehicle was involved in an accident due to a possible medical condition.the vehicle caught on fire immediately upon impact.the vehicle was deemed a total loss from the insurance company.a representative from the manufacturer inspected the vehicle and was unable to determine the cause of the fire due to the extensive damage.the solid fuel lines were intact as well as the gasoline tank.updated 02/26/06.

I have a 2004 chevrolet cavalier 2-dr coupe. The instrument panel is not working correctly. The gas gauge pointer works only part of the time. It will show (0) zero gas, even after a fill-up. The temperature gauge works the same way, sometimes, the pointer will move and sometimes it stays at the (0) temperature position, even while being driven. The speedometer pointers turns counter-clockwise. The only gauge that seems to work properly so far is the tachometer gauge. The car was purchased new and has about 53,000 miles on it.

Erratic speedometer reading and occasional incorrect fuel gauge reading, i have on many occasions had the speedometer rise to 110 mph while driving at approximate posted speeds, approximate because i have no way to actually tell how fast i'm driving. After researching i found this is a major issue with many year 2001 and up gm vehicles with only the higher end cadillac type and larger suv's being recalled ( which have the same exact stepper motors that are causing the problems ). I guess gm figures it's only necessary to repair the speedometers on the 5000 lb plus vehicles traveling at unknown speeds in hopes of saving the smaller vehicles from being hit by them. I did call the gm dealer i bought the car new from and they said there are no recalls on my cavalier and it would cost approx. $300 not including labor for an exchange unit or send out and repair of my original.

Carcomplaints.com notes: widespread instrument panel failure is a common and frustrating reality for many 2004-2005 chevy cavalier owners. They're often left in the dark when it comes to knowing how fast they're going, what their engine temperature is, or even how much fuel they have left in the tank. The likely culprit is a series of bad "stepper motors" which control the gauges and are no longer covered under warranty. Think not being able to see your speed is a safety issue and should be recalled for all owners? we'd agree. Trouble is, apparently the nhtsa does not.this is truly a serious safety issue.this issue has been reported thousands of times to various agencies and it seems the cavalier was never made. No one will address this issue or any others involving this cavalier.

My wife's 2004 chevy cavalier has a wrong speedometer indication. It says the car is going 60 mph while not being moved at all. When the car reaches high speeds at the freeway it says the car is going at 120 mph and hits the top of the gauge.the oil temperature indication also shows 190 degrees with engine not running, and with engine running it goes to red band indication.

My cluster stopped working a while ago. Since i didn't get a recall on it i was unaware of people did complain about it until my car caught on fire where the cluster is and all the wires are totally burned up. I am furious. I read other complaints and some people had the same problem. I could not read all of them so, i don't know how many caught on fire. Thankgod i didn't get injured or death. Chevrolet should beheld responsible for this. Please help.

The gauges show nothing no speed no gas no mileage nothing. I have seen a lot of complaints of this matter why is there nothing being done about this problem. I was always a chevy person but now i am moving on to something else. Chevy does not like to fix there problems they leave it up to the people to spend tons of money to fix the prob when they know what the prob is. This is uncalled for.

Instrument panel does not work. Therefore do not know the speed in which is being traveled, temperature of engine, amount of fuel or anything. Check guages light comes on and goes off like every week. Have no clue why it stopped working and personal mechanic is appalled at the issue.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. While driving approximately 30 mph over a bump in the road, the vehicle began to shake. The contact also noticed that the vehicle failed to start properly on multiple occasions. There were no warning lights illuminated; however, the interior lights would not illuminate. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the ignition switch needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

Bought this car new , every time we hit a bump with key ring and car driving the interior light would flash on and off like the key was just turned on, we complained and they could never find a thing , so now when you drive it and hit the key ring with all the other keys on it the light flashes on and off , chevrolet could never find the problem and now there is a recall for the same thing that happens on a 2004 cavalier as later models of chevy.

Dash cluster abnormal operation, in regards to fuel gauge and speedometer. Speedometer is inaccurate says i am currently traveling more the 110 mph when vehicle is at a state of rest. Fuel gauge also inaccurate sticks when engine is shut off, when restarted the fuel gauge moves in excess of its limits pinning againsttemperature gauge. During warmer weather the fuel gauge doesn't work and neither will the tachometer. Very disappointed. Contacted gm and was given the run around. Customer care noted that no one has complained about this defect on these vehicles. Very unsafe, don't know exactly how much fuel i have and have resorted in using a gps for speed reference. Recall needs to be issued!

I bought my car, a 2004 chevy cavalier with 21 miles on it.since then i have tried to return it and now the minor but frequent issues are much bigger and more frequently!first my trunk latch broke a week after purchase.the cd broke the next week, cigarette lighter broke, and passenger seat wouldn't move.this was thefirst two months of ownership.a few months ago the fuel gauge broke, temp gauge and ac.they couldn't verify it so couldn't repair, until it completely failed this month.also, i was left stranded at 2:30 am with my 3 year old son when the clutch fell through the floor.it was repaired and now the rpms shoot up to 6000, is unresponsive to any pedals, and requires turning the engine off.this happened in san francisco on highway 101, i am truly afraid for the safety of myself. Son, and others driving this car or near one.there are many other unmentioned things that have occurred, too many to tell in this summary. They of course can't duplicate this major problem and therefore can't "correct."also they state it doesn't fall under lemon, but what is at stake our lives.

2004 chevy cavalier. When the car slows down to a red light or stop sign, or you just reduce your speed, it will cut off on you.

My temperature gauge has malfunctioned and is stuck at 195 degrees when i turn my car on. It then rises just as normal but stops at 260 degrees which is in the red zone

I started looking for a fix for my wife's car and i have found that across the nation there are people driving with no speedo, tach, dash lights, or horn.this is a different mix of prbs for each but they all come back to the dash of the chevy cavalier.

Speedometer first began to malfunction, followed by all other gauges.no gauges work properly now.speed is unknown, rpms is unknown, amount of gas in tank is unknown, proper function of engine is unknown.

Speedometer has stopped functioning.safety issue because i can no longer tell how fast i am driving.

Speedometer quits working;today's example;we were entering an interstate and accelerating to the 65 mph posted speed limit, and the speedometer locked at 45 and stayed there.did not change and remains there until we got the car home. The worst part is my son, a student driver was driving and had no way to know how fast he was going and had to remain there until we could get off the interstate and exchange places.this is dangerous and needs to be investigated.i researched the internet as well as this site, and see many more with the same complaint.

Car shut off no power steering gauges shut off everything turned off but lights stayed on and flashers worked.

I have a 2004 cavalier and all the gauges have stopped working.once in a while the rpm gauge works.i investigated and have found various websites with lots of other people experiencing the same problem.the cost of repair is 500+ dollars with no simple do it yourself fix available.

When i turn on my car defroster, it starts popping very loud.at one time it started popping when i set the car at idle, and when i returned to the car, it was filled with smoke or dust.i had to air out the car for a while before i could drive it.the defroster doesn't pop every time, and it quits after about 30 minutes each time.also, when i bought the car, it needed a new console, so i had it replaced.the day-time running lights go out and flash at people.when they go out, the service light comes on.i have to drive with my headlights on so the day-time running lights do not flash at people.

Suddenly without warning the whole instrument cluster panel (fuel gauge, speedometer, rpm gauge & temperature gauge all stopped working correctly and then suddenly stopped working at all!found out that this is a common complaint and very expensive to replace.it is very dangerous driving without knowledge of your speed!there should be a recall on this also as it is a very common problem and dangerous.

Out of nowhere my temp. Gauge went out followed by the speedometer, rpm, fuel all my gauges have gone out. Can't find the problem without replacing the whole thing.

All of the trouble lights come on including the service light with a wrench.then, all of the gauges drop to nothing; you don't know how fast you're traveling, what your fuel capacity is, the temperature gauge dropsto nothing along with the tachometer dropping to nothing.in the odometer and "error" message replaces the odometer reading. The gauges will intermittently go off and on or all of them will drop of with no reading.the other evening, i was coming home on a winding back country road and all of my lights went out.i have to limit my driving to daytime driving and only use the running lights as it appears to only aggravate the problem when i use my headlights. Today, everything above happened along with some news things.the vehicle was shut off, the key was removed from the ignition and the running lights remained on as did the warning alarm as though the key were left in the ignition.i left the car only after i pulled the left and right fuse from the panel.when i returned to the car, i inserted the fuses and started the vehicle but was unable to shift the car into gear as the car would not let me depress the button on the shifter to do so.i have to now shut the car off and pull the ignition fuse and then reinsert it to get the car in gear.what the heck?

Some times the speedometer would change to 100 mph while driving at approximately 55 mph or would just drop to zeromph.the tachometer would not change.had it into the dealer several times but it would work ok.the dealer said he could not do anything under warranty unless he could see the problem and analyze it because it could be the cluster ,loose wire or another part.it happened at least 1 or 2 times a week on my way to work .i set up with dealer to have him come to my work to check it out if malfunctioned. Some times when i stopped the speedometer would read any where from 10 to 45 mph.finally malfunctioned and dealer was able to check it out.cluster was replaced on warranty.

Speedometeris unreliable.sometimes it shows faster, sometimes it shows slower.sticks in place at times.next, the temp gauge made me think my car was running very hot and i bought a $25 temperature sensor first, that didn't help, so i was going to replace thermostat.then i learned about this being a problem with thousands of these cars, so i am not doing anything to it until there is a recall.i'll use a gps to tell my speed.i have had two speeding tickets over this because i had no idea the thing was not working right until it got really bad and started sticking in one place for days.each ticket will give me two points on my license because of this.my insurance will go up.also, i don't get paid for the time i take off to go to traffic court over these tickets.i am 65 years old and never had a ticket until these two.thanks, chevy.

I bought the car used with over 29,000 miles on it in july of 2005. The car stops running at any speed traveled, everything locks up so it is hard to steer off the road. After i finally pull of the road i put the car in park, turn the ignition key off and then turn it on again it starts back up. This has happened many times. The first time i took it to the dealership and they told me that" since it wont happen to them while they drive it there is nothing wrong, so go home and call us if it happens again." so i did. The 2nd time it was in the dealership they put it on a diagnostic test and fixed 2 things. Now the warranty ends and it is still doing the problem. I have called and made an appointment but was told i would have to pay for the repairs anyways because the warranty ended a little over 1,000 miles ago. I drive in this car everyday to work which is a half hour away from my house and to school 1 day a week which is 3.5 hours from my house. I also have my child in this car at all times. I feel this car is a hazard to all that drives in it and i honestly feel that there may be an accident in the future if this doesn't get fixed.

Defective instrument cluster/panel.speedometer doesn't read the proper speed limit and the temperature gauge will not "reset" (?) it just keeps going clockwise around the dial.

All the dials in the instrument panel go haywire.i have tried disconnecting the battery but it still happens.don't know how fast i am going who how much gas is in the car.or even if the temp is okay.

First of all my instrument cluster fails, sometimes you know how fast you are going, what your tack is and you fuel level, sometimes you don't. I have never really known my mileage since i have owned the car. I also have issues with the car occasionally not wanting to start or reving of the engine and all of my dummy lights coming on i was told that is my ignition switch, however when i contacted gm they informed me cavaliers used a different switch than the ones in the recall. Ok. Both of these are safety issues, i was going to give this car to my son for his first car, but no way! i can not teach him how to drive in it, because the cluster doesn't function and the ignition switch issues. Gm will not issue a recall for this vehicle and knows there are issues, pretty sure last gm i will own.

First, thank you for listening. I have a 2004 chevrolet cavalier base model. 2.2 ecotec engine. The abs, lowtrac, and service light comes on in the vehicle when placed in drive or reverse. Car hesitates and wants to shut down every time!! when it first started to happen, it could be shut off and re-started and the lights would go out. Now they areis on all the time! i have also noticed when on slippery roadways the abs does not work in the vehicle> i have slid sideways and through intersections . A horrible noise comes from the car when the brakes are applied when the lights are off in the car if they do not come on right away. I apply the brakes, and the awful growling and noise that comes from the car is very scary. I am afraid to let my wife even drive sometimes. I have not reported this to the dealership yet as i am waiting to see if this is a recall. If it is, i can have the repair done for nothing. I feel it should be done for nothing asif this is a defect in the vehicle that could cause terrible harm or even death if this occurs while driving..

Over the past 2 years the speedometer on my 2004 chevy cavalier has stopped working at different times. The speedometer will go up past 100 mph when it is parked and will take 2+ weeks to reset itself and start working again. This past month the gas gauge and tachometer have also stopped working, this in addition to my speedometer being out have left me without know how much gas i have left, how fast i am going and multiple other issues.

I noticed in the cold my speedometer would show the incorrect speed or just stop. Over the course of about 6 months my temp gauge started to do the same thing. Followed by my rpm gauge, then the gas gauge. I did some online research and found out the only thing i could do was to get a whole new cluster which is a bit pricey.

The problem originally started with the temperature gauge (showed that the car was always overheating) and then eventually stopped moving at all. Next, the rpms stopped moving and the speedometer began showing that we were going 100 when we couldn't have been going more than 35. Now the speedometer doesn't move at all. So, at this point is impossible to know how fast i am going, if the car is overheating, or what the rpms are. Currently the fuel gauge works most of the time, but occasionally after filling up the tank the gauge will move to the far right (as if it's telling us that the tank is overfilled), to where it would interfere with the other gauges (if they were working). I feel this is a big safety problem and at the very least is very annoying (already been pulled over twice for going 10 miles over, because i had no idea how fast i was going).

I have a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. First the speedometer started sticking then it stopped working totally and is now stuck on 110 mph. Then my tach and temp gauges started sticking or not working at all. This is not a coincidence cause i just found out that they have a recall for 2004 trucks. There should be one for this car as well. I mean it is the same freaking problem as they had with the trucks. There is tons of complaints for this same problem. First and last time i ever buy a chevrolet unless they show me they care about there customers.

The gauge cluster on my 2004 cavalier has suddenly started malfunctioning. This is a serious safety issue as i do not know how hot my engine is or how fast i am going. The tach and gasgauges seem to still work (don't know for how long though), but speedometer and temp gauge do not. My car has very low mileage and i will just have had it for 10 years as of this month. I am the only owner of this car and it has been well taken care of. I cannot believe that chevy will not recall this faulty gauge panel. This is a safety issue and not a part that should just suddenly wear out on a car. With all of the issues that are suddenly surfacing with gm i am shocked that this has not been recalled before and i know i am not the only person to have this issue. God forbid someone not know this is an issue and they pull over because they think their car is overheating and get out to check only to get hit by another car. I will never buy another chevy again unless they step up and take responsibility for this faulty gauge cluster.

My 2004 chevrolet cavalier has "squirrelly gauges" . None of the gauges read correctly. However, once in a while one or more gauges do appear to be reading correctly.my gas gauge is never accurate.my speedometer is often pegged over to top speed or reads 45 mph when i'm doing 65.the only accurate gauge is the odometer.this problem has been going on for about 2-3 years.(no i do not have the money to repair it) researching this problem, i search google for the symptoms and this seems to be a common problem.i look on ebay and find vendors who repair "squirrelly gauges".my complaint is not unique.

2004 cavalier, 2.2l dohc, 5-speed manual transmission.while driving at 60 mph vehicle felt as if cruise control was engaged.rpms would not fall off as fast as usual when foot taken off gas, and when i depressed the clutch (which was just replaced last week due to another known issue that chevy refuses to recall) rpms went above 4,000.tapped gas pedal thinking maybe it was stuck and it only revved higher and did not come down on its own.rpms continued to climb as i came to a stop, around 6,000 by the time i pulled over.shut the car off and immediately back on, no problems for the rest of the trip home (another 8 miles).i cannot risk my car revving at 6,000 rpms in stop and go traffic which i'm in every weekday and i can't shut it off and turn it back on to fix the problem, so i have to find out what causes it and fix it asap.thanks for another spendy repair, chevy.

Gauges on front panel are not working.gas, speed, temp.i have contact chevy dealers and they said it is not recalled.read on many sites on the internet that other people are having the same problem.

Defective instrument panelthe instrument panel operated correctly until 2007.the speedometer began to operate incorrectly at random times.the needle would indicate high speed when stopped or when moving at slow speeds.the needle would continue to indicate an incorrect speed until the vehicle had been turned off.this continued to happen more often from 2007 until 2009.in 2009, the speedometer needle no longer indicated a correct speed at any time.the temperature gauge then began to indicate engine temperature to be above 300 degrees while driving.the temperature gauge continued to operate incorrectly.as a consequence, the speed of the car cannot be properly estimated.any problem with the radiator would not be easy to identify for lack of knowing engine temperature.attempts to fix: the instrument panel has been electrically disconnected and checked for a faulty connection.no faulty wiring has been found.

Entire dash cluster doesn't work!!speedometer says going 80mph when sitting still.temp gauge says it's overheating when car is off.gas gauge is now going haywire.going on vacation is hard when you don't really know how fast you're going.something needs to be done about this because a cluster for this car is $270.then pay someone to put it in.there are too many 2004 cavaliers having this issue for this to not be recalled.

Dash cluster failure. Rpm gauge running backwards and sticking, fuel level indicator incorrect, speedometer sometimes incorrect. When this happened i looked it up online to see if i could diagnose the problem. It seems that this is an extremely common and potentially dangerous problem.

While driving my car, the engine would completely shut off.at first it would happen when i was at a complete stop.however it began to happen while the car was in movement.i tried to crank the car to take it to the shop and it wouldn't crank at all.the problem couldn't be identified on a diagnostic test and it wasn't the spark plugs.i was told to replace the computer to see if that was the problem.the auto shop was not even sure that it was the problem.this computer cost $650 not including labor.now my engine light continually flashes and the car jerks.however when i take it to the auto shop they say that i have gotten bad gas.they can't find another problem.i've changed where i get my gas and it still happens daily.out of 3 hours of driving it may run normally about 1- 1.5 hour.

I started the car when the fuel gauge went above the full mark even though it was at a half tank, after shutting it off and restarting it a couple times it eventually corrected itself. A week later this happened again but it would not correct itself though.then while driving the speedometer and tachometer started to give bad readings. The tachometer was reading at below zero rpms while at idle and it would go up to about 6,000 rpm while driving, the speedometer would read about 30-40 mph over the speed limit while i was driving and would sit at about 20 mph when i was at idle.the dealerships said that replacing the instrument cluster would correct the problem.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. While parked the contact noticed the fuel gauge displayed the incorrect reading. The reading would fluctuate from empty and full. In addition, the contact noticed the speedometer did not read the accurate speed while driving. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic for diagnostic. The mechanic stated the instrument cluster would have to be replaced but the part was not available for repair. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

My complaint is a "domino effect" within the instrument cluster.here is what happened, in order:1) temperature gauge needle over extends itself clockwise past the maximum threshold, so that the needle is pointing to the right (passenger side).the needle will unpredictably reset itself to that position when the vehicle is powered off and turned back on, or it will just remain stuck in that position.2) the temperature gauge needle, now stuck pointing to the right, physically interferes (a fight so to speak) with the speedometer needle which is frantically trying to push its way past a stubborn temp gauge needle.the speedometer cannot push itself past 10 miles per hour.3) speedometer, despite being the bigger needle, loses and dies completely... Sitting lifelessly at -1. Ohhh the irony.4) about 1 month later the fuel gauge over extends itself and commonly points to the right, or in any random direction.the fuel gauge sometimes sticks when the vehicle is powered off, or will reset and find another completely inaccurate position to remain in. I think it is just jealous of the other two.conclusion:i am driving -1 mile per hour down the freeway with 147% fuel capacity in a vehicle whose engine is running at over 570 degrees f.but that is ok because chevy told me it isn't a safety issue, so every thing must be perfectly fine!

My temperature gauge fluctuated for about a month and then it just moved to the bottom and points to the bottom part of the instrument panel and i can not tell if my car is overheating.,and my speedometer likes to freeze every once in a while.

About a year and a half ago the speedometer on my 2004 cavalier stopped working correctly, it will stick at random places on the dial, even when not driving. Sometimes the needle will point straight down at the odometer and stick there also. The problem seems to get better with warm weather, but is still not right. Now if that wasn't enough, the tachometer has started to stick and not register at all when it is very cold outside, like the speedometer though, the tachometer works better in warmer weather. Coolant temp. Gauge sticks also when it gets cold out. These problems are very repairable, i just can't believe by the number of complaints that a recall has not been issued for this problem yet! this is surely a safety issue. Please gm do a recall on these cars before you pull off a "toyota."

There is a well known problem with the horn after time/wear with the 2003-2005 chevrolet cavalier. There is a issue with the contact in the steering column to active the vehicles horn.the problem is caused by the rotating ribbon circuit contact under the steering wheel having a broken filament for the horn circuit, the part is known as a clock spring contact. The horn will not work by pressing either button on steering wheel, but will sound as part of vehicle security system by pressing key fob. This issue can lead to accidents, and injury. This is a know problem reported by many vehicle owners on different forums, databases, and searches. Please fix or recall this part chevrolet, to prevent accident, injury, and death.

Speedometer stuck at 60mph. Its not that old of a car and only has 58 thousand miles on it this should be a recall with all the people complaining the same thing happened with the low miles ridiculous!

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated the instrument panel failed to function properly. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that while driving 15 mph, the vehicle stalled as all of the warning lamps illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician was unable to duplicate the failure however, replaced the fuel pump as a precaution. The repair failed to remedy the failure. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer, where the technician determined that the ignition switch was defective and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure.the failure mileage was 87,426 and the current mileage was 111,600.updated 7/10/15 updated 8/23/2017

The trunk latch on my cavalier won't latch. This is the second time it has broke with the same problem. I replaced the trunk latch about three years ago i rarely use my trunk. Also the defrost, vent knob quit working it turn but won't switch to defrost or the different vent settings. The cd player won't take, or play cd's. There was a fly on my windshield right around a year after i bought the car and i barely tapped the windshield and the windshield cracked all over.

I have had my used chevy cavalier 2004 car for almost a year. As i have been driving the engine has just stopped. This has happened 4 times in the time span of 5 months. No one ( auto shops) can find the issue. They have zero answers. This is dangerous and has caused accidents. I would be banned from the internet if i said what i really want to say to chevy. The most recent time this happened was yesterday...aug 3rd 2017.

The fuel gauge and speedometer failed for the past two years in cold weather.i now have 48,000 miles on the car.the car was diagnosed with a defected instrument cluster and gmc told me it was not their problem and the cost to fix it is $480.00.

Car will not start consistently. Have to wait a couple of days, then it may start or not.but if it starts, it will not start again until days go by............ Ignition shut off on one occasion when operating on a public road. Loss of power, engine and power brakes.steering wheel did not lock but coasted vehicle off the road.

2004 cavalier gauges go crazy.110mph in the driveway, tachometer says 9000rpm when i am idling. Gas gauge is no longer reliable..particularly a problem in cold and damp weather, hot weather and on open highway.i never know how fast i am driving, whether i will run out of gas, or if the engine rpm's are so high the motor will explode.. 31,000 miles on the car so it is low mileage.

I have a 2004 chevrolet cavalier and the speedometer failed on me. I replace the speed sensor but problem is not resolved. I fear this could be a dangerous situation on the road and should be recalled.

Defective stepper motors on the cluster instrument panel. Now affecting fuel gauge, speedometer, and tachometer on about a year now. Just found out what is causing the problem. Gm already recalled trucks and suv's. No recall on cars yet.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. While examining the vehicle the contact noticed that the instrument panel gauges were not functioning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the contact was informed that the instrument panel would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The current mileage was 61,000 and the failure mileage was 60,650. Updated03/15/12 the consumer stated the problem started with the gas gauge. Which started off as an intermittent problem and became worse. The gas gauge needle then started blocking the temperature gauge, which caused that needle not to work properly.the gas gauge and temperature needle were facing the steering wheel. The consumer was informed the entire instrument cluster would have to be replaced at a cost of $650 plus labor.updated 05/30/12

I have a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. Ls . Sometimes the speedometersticks, show the wrong speed, goes off the gauge past the highest speed on the gauge or a speed below the actual speed. The fuel gauge does the same thing.the fuel gauge sometimes goes past "full"with the needle going into the temperature gauge. There should be a recall for this car problem. Not knowing the correct speed poses a potential hazard, especially taking a curve too fast. This is a genuine safety issue. Additionally there is the legal aspect if you're ticketed for speeding when you don't know how fast your are going! this also poses a hazard to pedestrians as well as other drivers.

All gauges in my cavalier have stopped working (speedometer, temp gauge, rpm's..) the car dies randomly while driving, dies when stopping. I actually tried to pull my car over because it was acting like it was going to die and while i was pressing the brakes it was trying to go!! very scary!!! could have wrecked!

Own 2004 chevy cavalier with 62,000 miles on it. At 25,000 mi the instrument panel stopped working correctly i contacted gm and was told to take car to dealer and have it checked at a cost of 100.00 and if it was a cluster they might pay for repairs. The speedometer needle goes over past 110 mi when i am doing 20 mph, the gas gauge will sit on empty when there is a half tank, i did some research and found out that gm recalled trucks with this problem but did not include cars, this had to be done before 70,000 miles. I think they should recall cars and fix the problem at once.

In the winter my chevy cavalier's speedometer started to be disfunctional, it would read say 30mph while i was in park. Over the summer the problem got worse and i had to resort to using a gps to know my speed. The problem isn't limited to the speedo though, i have also experienced this with the temperature gauge.

2004 chevrolet cavalier developed a problem with starting as well as stalling.*mrthe vehicle has been taken tot he dealer numerous times but they have not been able to permanently alleviate the problem.

For several years now, the interior light has been coming on intermittently when i hit a bump in the road. Last year i went shopping, got back into my car & started it, or rather tried to start it, but it shut down quite quickly. Thinking it was a fluke, i tried to start it several more times with the same results. Not even pushing on the gas could keep it going. After towing the car & having it sit around for a while before someone could finally find the electrical issue, it was 'repaired'. The issue was the wiring for the ignition switch. The repair completed was a cheaper route than replacing the actual switch. What i didn't know until too late last year was the 'service w/wrench' and 'theft system' lights were the warning that the switch was about to go out. The interior light has been doing the same thing again & the theft & service lights came on again last wednesday, 7/15/15, and now i know i have no choice but to replace the ignition seitch. Last year i contacted gm but they only wanted to make a note about it. I'm sure that as time goes on others will have issues too. How can wires come loose or break behind a steering wheel? plugs, hoses & things like that i can fully understand, but not something that is hidden & supposedly safe behind a steering wheel

2004 chevrolet cavalier instrument cluster; at first the temperature gauge showed hot causing us to pull over to the shoulder of the road and investigate, 27 years as an automotive technician kinda helped me come to the conclusion real quick it was not overheating, then the tachometer would go completely around and peg from the underside and that's where it is and has stayed, the speedometer ceased to work shortly after the tachometer went haywire and the fuel gauge also has its moments, sometimes it works and sometimes it don't and all of the check engine lights and service soon indicators have a mind of there own, the car has no trouble codes and there is no reason gm hasn't recalled these and other vehicles with the same instrument cluster problems, funny they sent me a letter on my 03 silverado cluster and i haven't had any problems with it but i look at all the complaints on the cavaliers and no such recalls, you might ask why i haven't fixed it myself with all my experience and i will tell you right now, why should i have too? gm should step up to the plate and fix its faulty clusters it is dangerous for any of these informational items of the cluster to be faulty or inaccurate it can cause a motorist to travel at an unsafe speed causing an accident or to pull over onto the shoulder of the road and be at risk of being struck by another motorist from behind these are very dangerous situations, ask yourself how many people have been hurt or fatally injured because of the faulty clusters, who knows; but one would be one too many don't you think?

Well i have a 2004 chevy cavalier and the speedometer doesn't work.i would get oil changes and tires rotated and notice small differences then out of no were it just would not work.it stuck on 110 and the temp is off too.also it does not tell you how much gas you have.over all the whole board seems to be not working.i have had this problem for at least two years people tell me they dont know what it is others tell me it cost 700- 900 dollars to fix.

Speedometer runs up to extreme limit at any speed and tachometer freezes up.

Low and high-beam headlights appear dim when turned on compared to other cars.may be due to corroded/defective wiring. Appears to be a very common problem with this chevrolet model.looking for recall information related to this issue.

Dt:while driving and without warning the vehicledied. This has happened three times. The dealer said it was something different every time.the manufacturer was contacted, but would notreturn the consumers call. She called three times.the dealer said the problem was an ignition switch the second time. The third time they replaced/programmed the pcm. The first time they replaced a module 3.107, seal 3.112. The power windows would not roll down.

The car has a major wiring or electrical problem, but its not detected by mechanics.i have a temp gauge that is all over the place, sometimes it even touches the far bottom right side of the control panel.the speedometer is no longer working, driving or parked i am going -3 miles an hour.the rpms work when they feel like it which is rarely.the only gauge working is the gas.in addition to this, the car cuts off while driving.all of this has been for the last year and a half and continues to date.i have been in mid-left turn on major intersections of los angeles and it just died.i commute on the 110 fwy and it has just died, always while i am accelerating never parked.then in a few seconds you crank the key and your off and running again.it is so scary because it is so unpredictable.i have received speeding tickets not knowing my speed and mechanic cant find the problem.what do i do???

When driving the vehicle and hit a bump the ignition switch will cause the interior light to come and on occasion cause the car to shut off.

I own a 2004 chevrolet cavalier ls with 36,531 miles on it.yesterday, i went to drive the car and had "no speedometer" function ---------- the needle just sat on "0 mph" no matter what speed i drove.i feel that this is a major safety issue and needs to be addressed.i have also read of the many hundreds of reported failures of the same kind concerning the instrument panel in these and many other gm products built during the years 2000 through 2005.why are the trucks/ suv's instrument panel problems a recall and the documented problems of the cavalier (for the same years) not a recall?it appears to me that the relative cost of each vehicle plays a part in your decision and possibly the end of the manufacturing run of cavaliers in 2005 has skewed your judgment.i find this instrument panel problem a serious driving concern for all who share the road.i also have been in discussions with others who have experienced this problem and there is a suggestion from the gm dealers that the problems of the "old gm" are not the problems of the "new gm (2009).since my taxes pay your salary to keep me safe(without bias) and my taxes and future earnings make me a shareholder of the old/new gm, it would appear to me that this big problem could be solved between the parties because we are all on the same side and in the same family.shame on you for not declaring this a "recall" for the cavalier instrument panel.i still have the car and have not had the problem repaired.i also will not allow my family to drive this vehicle any more and i am not sure i will pay the approximate $500.00 to have it repaired.this reminds me of the lack of a recall for the 3.4liter v-6 motor that i had in my 2003 buick rendezvous with all of its associated problems with head and intake gaskets..... I paid the $1,500.00 to have the intake gasket replaced....... Hope the new gm gets its act together fast........as for me i will be spending my hard-earned dollars on japanese .

My speedometer stopped working. Apparently i'm not the only one this has happened to. I've been reading a forum on http://www.carcomplaints.com/chevrolet/cavalier/2004/accessories-interior/speedometer_stopped_working.shtml and between the mileage range of 30,000 and 50,000 this has happened to signifigant amount of people by no fault of their own. This is extremely dangerous for people who have no way to afford getting it fixed and chevrolet should be liable to fix this issue. They cannot expect to charge upwards of $500.00 to repair something that was poorly manufactured.

Speedometer failure 2004 chevrolet cavaliergauge cluster failed at 82000 miles. Unsafe. Cannot determine mph.

While driving at 35mph, the speedometer began to malfunction giving faulty readings. At times, it registers at 0mph - even when you're driving. The tachometer began to do the same thing (faulty readings) two days later. The speedometer now works but periodically gives faulty readings while driving. The tachometer no longer works at all and constantly shows a faulty reading (below zero).after a visit to three different local mechanics and a gm dealership - i'm told there's only one way to fix the problem. Replace the instrument cluster completely. This is a costly repair and quite common with these vehicles in their experience apparently. Not having an accurate and reliable display of your current speed is certainly a major safety issue. It's amazing to me that this has not yet been investigated with all the complaints regarding faulty gauges/instrument panels on this vehicle. This vehicle needs to be investigated and recalled.

While driving down a highway the speedometer stayed at 65 mph while he brakes were depressed and the car was slowing. When the car was parked 15 minutes later and shut off wit the key removed the speedometer still read 65 mph. This continued for some time before replacing the speedometer cluster.

Electrical problem with 2004 chevy cavalier.within a few weeks of purchase (purchased new) car has had electrical problems that have gotten worse over the year of ownership.driver side window will not open or close at times, pre-set radio stations change at times, and interior light will turn on and off by itself at times.

Gas gauge malfunction 1month ago, went half way to the right of full upon fill up, have been keeping track of gas by trip miles.this fuel gauge is halting the temp gauge from rising to normal. Today 1/17/11 started car this morning and speedgauge is pointing straight down to steering wheel. Proceeded to drive 8 minutes to work all the time the dash was going crazy the mileage spot had the word error on it,& every light was on,the dashboard- all of them. Apparently this has been a problem for sometime with this car. Gm is aware and doing nothing.i have found out by looking it up on the internet tonight. Through my research im guessing i need a dash cluster at the cost of 500.00. I feel a speedometer should last for at least 10 yrs, my car is 6yrs old. I bought this car brand new and have followed the recommended service.

My wife'sinstrument cluster on her2004 cavalier has not worked since about 80000 miles . The only gauge thatworks anymore is the tachometer. My research points to the steppers motors . This is not an isolated issue . There are numerous complaints concerning this exact issue , all over the internet . Is this not a safety issue , when the speedometer does not work ? g.m. Should be held responsible . She has been estimating her speed by the tachometer for far too long . Please have g.m. Fix this issue before someone dies ! thank you .

The tachometer is failing to work, the speedometer is failing to work, the drivers side window went out, and the service engine light stays on with the abs and track off lights stay on.this is constant.now, i am worried that the speedometer will have a problem when i am driving my children.there doesn't seem to be a clear cut fix for this when talking to the chevy dealer.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that the gauges on the instrument panel failed and were providing inaccurate or erratic readings. The vehicle was not inspected by a dealer or an independent mechanic to determine the cause of failure. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000. The current mileage was approximately 90,000.

All gauges on instrument panel quit working completely at first but now move around backwards or any direction they choose...never correct!!!!! this is very dangerous!!!!!!

Instrument cluster fails to work properly on this model although i have taken it to the dealership 3 times before the warranty ran out.has never been repaired although they claim they fixed it.the fuel gauge, speedometer, tachometer, and temperature gauge are all affected by this malfunction.when i am driving down the road, it is very common for it to read that i'm going 30 miles faster than i really am and the extreme opposite also happens where i am sitting at a red light but going 70 mph.i have researched online and haven't seen a recall but i really feel that one is necessary in this case.it is unsafe to never know how much gas is in the vehicle, the speed in which you are travelling, or any of the other essential things that should be known while you are operating a car.

The speed cluster acts up from time to time. Sometimes the mph gauge doesn't read or is not accurate or sticks and sometimes the heat gauge doesn't work and sometimes the gas gauge doesn't work. Sometimes i get a brake light that lights up and sometimes the abs light comes on. The entire cluster acts up from time to time with all different things wrong.

The cluster on my 2004 chevy cavalier stopped working while i was on a road trip, i have done much research the past few days and came to the conclusion that the cluster in the 2004-05 chevy cavaliers are defective due to many other people having the same problem. This is a real safetyissue because i don't know how much gas my car has, how fast im going and if my cars temperature is to high, if y'all could get to the bottom of this issue it will be greatly appreciated.

Car caught on fire in the wiring in the floor left of the brake pedal.driver and passenger escaped the vehicle with just minor injuries.a passer by cut the battery cable and the fire/smoke stopped.

My speedometer has stopped working.it has been repaired once and has started not functioning again.it occasionally works correctly, but mostly it goes up to a high reading and sticks there.

The easiest way to put this is the 2004 chevy cavalier instrument panel is messed up, it first started approximately 3 months ago when my speedometer would read 40mph when i was idling, and now the needle is buried past 110mph even when im going 20mph.now the gas gauge has gotten messed up too its needle is buried blocking the temperature needle from advancing which would cause overheating and braking problems. I called a local dealership about this problem and the service manager said he knows it is a problem but then proceeded to tell me it would be $500.00 to repair it.honestly i am kind of scared to drive this car with my family in it due to chevy not wanting to replace this widely known problem, i greatly appreciate you taking your time for reading this.

My speedometer is malfunctioning. It is setting on 65 when stopped. Then when driving it sets on 110+. Then for no reason it startsworking again. I took it in to a chevy dealership they said nothing was wrong, i am still under warranty. I only have one car, i have to drive to work. But this is scary and dangerous. Not to mention i could get a ticket.

My 2004 chevy cavalier speedometer quit working. This seems to be a common problem with this vehicle. A recall is in order!

Speedometer stop working.

The dash board cluster in my 2004 chevy cavalier coupe has problems. The dials of my gauges are inaccurate. The engine heat gauge dial can cross over intermittently into my speedometer causing that to get stuck and not work. The heat gauge dial has also been pointed towards my steering wheel, pointing directly down. My rpm gauge rarely works correctly. I have taken it into a repair shop to be looked at and was toldby the repairman that he had the same problem with the cluster on his cavalier. He knew what the problem was as i described it. He told me how to temporarily correct the problem. This is done by continually turning the key in the ignition slightly, until the dials return thenormal position, i have to do this at least once a week. He quoted me a repair price of $500.00. I do not have enough money to fix this and believe it should be recalled. I have done some investigating of my own on-line and have found that many people have this problem. In the winter this problem is worse. Help!!!

On june 15,2010 my entire cluster gauge started acting funny.i did some research to find out i was not the only one who owner a 2004 cavalier and the gauges go all haywire.i feel this is a safety concern and should be reviewed.

All four gauges that make up the instrument panel cluster (lr fuel, temp, speed and tech) will show zero reading or varies reading that have nothing to do with reality. By turning the key numerous times i can reset the speedometer back to zero and then use the vehicle, till at a random time it will just increase in speed shown. I feel this is a safety issue and there should be a recall. Gm has had numerous complaints and have done zero except charge high fee to fix a defective safety equipment that they place in the vehicle.

The speedometer does not read accurately. Sometimes it reads too fast and sometimes too slow. No accidents have occurred, but the potential is there.the problem is sporadic, happening over the course of a day, several days a week. I have not had it repaired.

2004 chevy cavalier all gauges on dash do not work.

The gauges on my cavalier are all messed up.sometimes the only gage that works are my rpm gauges.all the other gauges:the gas gage, the thermometer gauges and the mph gage never work right.i can't tell how fast i am going, how much gas is in the car or if it's going to overheat on me or not.it will not reset.this has been going on for two years.

The speedometer shows incorrect speed while moving or speed while parked.

Speedometer stuck at 60mph. Its not that old of a car and only has 58 thousand miles on it this should be a recall with all the people complaining the same thing happened with the low miles ridiculous!

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. Whenever the contact started her vehicle she noticed that the instrument panel displayed incorrect information. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealership and there were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 45294.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that the instrument cluster failed when she turned the vehicle on. Occasionally the instrument cluster moved rapidly and registers 0. A local mechanic replaced the instrument panel; however, the failure recurred. The dealer stated that they could diagnose the for $125. The manufacturer advised the contact to have the dealer diagnose the failure at the owners expense. The failure mileage was 3,000 and the current mileage was 58,000.

It was sometime in nov. 2011 when the speedometer stopped working for no reason.every once in a while it will register the speed but it is not correct.i have seen a lot of complaints about this same problem with the same car model. And from what i have learned online this can be a very expensive repair.there really should be a recall on this part.all drivers need to know what their speed is in order to be safe and responsible driver.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact was driving approximately 70 mph when she noticed that the speedometer, fuel gauge, temperature gauge and rpm gauge failed intermittently.the vehicle was not taken to the dealer for the failure. She contacted the manufacturer and was advised there were no recalls on the vehicle and that they were unable to assist. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 130,000.updated 04/15/11*ljupdated 05/02/11

At about 50,000 miles the tachometer on the dashboard cluster began to fail, becoming wildly uncalibrated and showing rpm well above actual. This was followed by the speedometer suffering the same defect. When driving, stopped, in park, or even engine off, the speedometer will read inaccurate: 30mph, 90mph, sometimes pinned 360-degrees off the gauge.a quick temporary fix is, while the car is off, to remove the dash cluster fuse and reinsert it, which resets all the gauges at 0. This is only temporary because within days, if not earlier, the gauges become uncalibrated again.recently at about 60,000 miles the speedometer has also randomly begun to report speeds well below actual speed. I.e. When traveling 45mph the speedometer will read 25mph.

Fuel gauge inoperative, points to the temp gauge. Speedometer sometimes works. When it's not, it's either pointing to below zero or up at 90 mph.must rely on odometer(still works) to gauge fuel use.must drive slower than traffic to insure i'm not speeding.repair is very expensive. Have not been able to afford yet.problem started around 54,000 miles.

My 2004 chevy cavalier has a problem with the instrument cluster. In 2006 i was driving doing 20 mph in a school zone and noticed my speedometer read 110, the gas gauge showed empty and the temperature gauge had moved all the way around and was sitting on the speedometer needle. I contacted gm about the problem and was informed that a recall was issued on trucks and suv's but did not include automobiles. I was told to take my car to a dealership and pay $100.00 to have it inspected by a mechanic and if the mechanic determined it was the cluster, the information would be sent to gm and they would then make a decision on whether they would make the repair or not. My daughter owns a 2004 monte carlo with the same problem and her daughter has the problem with her 2005 cavalier. There are many others with this problem and gm just refuses to address the problem. I think car owners should get the same respect as truck owners and gm should repair these clusters. I have contacted gm many times and they don't do anything .

The rpm and the mph gauge are not working.

The instrument cluster is not giving the right speed you are going and the tach is not giving the rpms it stays on 0. Speed needle goes all the way around as to as far it can go and it stays there for a few days.

Cluster in dash failed, no gauges work.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier.the contact stated that the instrument cluster was defective.the speedometer and fuel gauge failed to operate properly and displayed inaccurate readings.the vehicle was purchased with 30,000 miles.the current and failure mileages were 31,000.

On the date listed below, i noticed the speedometer on my 2004 chevrolet cavalier began to, well, "stick." after a length of time it will not return to zero, and over time, will dip below 110 mph and stay there. I have been on numerous websites and have seen numerous complaints from owners of cavaliers and impalas, so this is not an uncommon problem. This is not safe for me as a driver, to not know how fast i am going, and could pose a danger for my passengers and others i drive near. Average repair costs are $400, and a person driving a cavalier will typically not have that kind of money to spare. General motors needs to issue a recall.

2004 chevy cavalier with safety issues dealing with the engine. Customer states that there are some safety issues with their vehicle but the dealer needs a light to be on to find out. Dealer said it was the injectors and it was not the injectors.the consumer stated when she traveled on trips over 100miles long, the trac off light illuminated., followed by the rpms going up, followed by the check engine light illuminating. The vehicle also burned a lot of oil, but only when the lights illuminated.

At a round 61000 km's(approx mar 2007)the speedometer and tachometer started giving incorrect readings, either at the same time or on their own.they will pretty pretty much spin around at different points.then some times they will work fine.this is an ongoing problem.today (sept 2007), the fuel gauge has now started doing the same, it went off scale and now is colliding with the temperature gauge.this poses a serious problem for me now, up til now i was putting up with it as it can only be fixed by the dealer at a high cost (over 500 cdn).having an incorrect fuel reading causes obvious problems of getting stranded, and the temp gauge of engine damage.

All gauges on instrument panel quit working completely at first but now move around backwards or any direction they choose...never correct!!!!! this is very dangerous!!!!!!

As soon as this car reached @50,000 miles, the speedometer and fuel gauges stopped working. Upon checking with a chevrolet dealer, i was informed that the entire dashboard needs to be dismantled and new gauges installed by an outside source, whereupon car is returned to dealership and odometer is reset to correct mileage. Cost is approximately $400.00 and up. Upon research, i found this to be a common complaint. This is a safety hazard because you cannot tell how fast you are driving and if you have enough fuel. Also, fuel gauge needle goes haywire when i fill up. The needle goes into the gauge that tells you if your car is running hot - preventing that needle from operating properly. To my knowledge no recall has been issued regarding these problems.

The speedometer sticks and does not report accurate vehicle speed. Above a certain speed the gauge will freeze and be unusable. This happened without warning while i was driving on the highway and could easily have caused an accident. This is a known safety issue on other gmc cars from the same time period (mine is a 2004). In addition to the speedometer, the tachometer and the fuel gauge are also completely inoperable. The whole instrument cluster is defective. It is incredibly dangerous and expensive to repair, and should be covered under the same recall as the other chevrolet products.

Speedometer fluctuates.do not know my speed. Tachometer fluctuates. Cannot estimate speed. Temperature gauge is acting up. Do i have to worry about blowing my engine? numerous complaints on internet. This is a real problem, and should be recalled. Pretty expensive repair for a cavalier owner.

Speedometer stopped working.

2004 chevy cavalier speedometer instrument cluster fails. Speedometer reads incorrect speed and fails. It is very dangerous not knowing how fast you are going, i received a speeding ticket as a result. I replaced the instrument cluster with one from a junk yard. The problem is temporarily fixed. There are many other people with the same issue.

At about 40k miles, the tachometer and speedometer started acting erratically. Speedometer constantly at 60 even when at a stop. Tach no longer works at all. Will have to replace instrument cluster. Estimate is about $450.00.

2004 chevrolet cavalier. Consumer states temp gauge looses its bearings and ends up over in the speedometer area and speedometer will not go pass 11 mph *tgw

I was driving down the street and my entire cluster went out. I spoke to chevy customer service and they stated it was a recall, but the recall date expired. However, i was not notified.

Gauges in car is not working.read on your site there is another 65 people who have the same problem.

2004 chevy cavalier. The speedometer does not work properly. When starting the car (before shifting out of park) it will read 40+ mph. I once started it after it had been sitting in a hot parking lot for 8 hours and the needle was maxed out (again, before it was even shifted out of park). I have read that this problem has been experienced by many people with chevy cavaliers (not just 2004 model). We were told that the only fix for this was to replace the entire cluster, which will cost $500+.

Odometer would not read correctly and would end up over 110mph and get stuck.eventually would make it to 0 and work for a couple days and the go back over 110mph. While it was over 110 if you started the car the fuel gauge would turn towards the temp gauge.took car to the dealer and had to replace the entire instrument cluster. Cost about $400.00.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier.while driving 5 mph, the engine intermittently stalled.the failure occurred while making a turn in first gear.the rpm decreased to 400 rpm and there was a loss of power steering.when the vehicle stalled, the contact released his foot from the clutch and the motor increased the rpm's automatically.when the key was turned in the ignition, the vehicle failed to start intermittently until approximately ten attempts.while driving 55 mph, the speedometer displayed 30 mph.when the gas tank was full, the fuel gauge would display half a tank.the temperature gauge also malfunctioned.the vehicle would not overheat, but the gauge would read hot.the dealer was unable to diagnose or repair the failures.the failure mileage was 24,000 and current mileage was 37,500.

The speedometer on my 2004 chevy cavalier stopped working correctly about a year and a half ago. It will stick at random places on the dial, even when not driving, will not register the correct speed, and sometimes roll all the way over, pointing at the odometer. The tachometer and coolant temp. Gauge stick also when it gets cold outside. All of these problems seem to get better when the weather warms up, but are still present. I haven't had the money to get this fixed (estimated at 700 dollars) so therefore no repairs have been made. This is an obvious safety defect and a recall needs to be issued! i have read many more complaints from other cavalier owners about the same issues!

2004 chevy cavalier ls sport when turning on the car the speedometer shoots up past 80mph at standstill.this occurs at least twice a year.never know how fastyou are going unless you actually sit there and count.takes about 4 or 5 days before the speedometer makes its way back to 0mph.

The instrument panel sometimes works and sometimes doesn't...my gas gauge never works properly...this began to happen after i reached 55,000 miles on my car.

My 2004 chevy cavalier instrument cluster has not been working for a while was just the speedometer now the fuel gauge is not working i have researched this and found many people have the same issue.

Speedometer and other gauges going haywire.at times i have no idea what speed i am going.i can be stopped at a redlight and my speedometer reads 90mph.or i can be keeping with the flow of traffic on route 30 and it reads 20mph.

The speedometer and tach quit working or are reading the wrong speeds on my 2004 chevrolet cavalier.i can be at a stop sign and the gage shows 40mph.i can be going down the interstate and it shows 30 mph. Sometimes it doesn't work at all.i have been online & seen several forums with people with the same problem, and there is no apparent recall.

The speedometer is stuck on a 2004 chevrolet cavalier ls .

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier.she stated that the entire instrument panel would fail intermittently. The dealer was contacted and advised that the cluster, a fuse or the wiring could be faulty. The vehicle has not been taken into the dealer to bediagnosed. No repairs made to date.the failure mileage was 12,000 and the current mileage was 112,075.

Instrument cluster on my 2004 chevrolet cavalier started malfunctioning in late december 2009.first the gas gauge stopworking, then the temperature gauge beacuse the gas gauge interfered. Now july 10 2010. The speedometer has also stopped functioning properly because the temperature gauge interfered with it.this is very dangerous. I emailed gm but no response.was told by gm dealer it would be over $700 to replace it. Not fair at all, this should be a recall by gm because of the safety issue.

Instrument cluster on 2004 chevy cavalier just goes haywirethis is a safety concern.why was there no recall.faulty motors were put in.

Speedometer started running backwards and now will stick at different speeds regardless of actual speed. I have to estimate actual speed according to rpm's. Consequences is getting pulled over for speeding because i can not tell how fast nor slow i am going.

The speedometer on my 2004 chevrolet cavalier has failed at the 50,000 mile mark. There is no way for me to tell the accurate speed i am driving.

2004 chevy cavalier speedo sticking. It started around 5 months ago it says your going 110 mph when only going 30 mph. Now it all over the place and the tach doesn't always work right either so you cant go by that. It is very dangerous trying to guess your speed. I have looked all over the internet only to find many people having the same problem. Chevy should have a recall if someone freaks out on a highway alot of people could really get hurt or even killed. Im sure if someone from chevy teenager had a cav doing this or got hurt because of this something would be done. Please do something to get this fixed. It doesn't seem to be a big issue but when people get hurt then it will be..please for the safety of people on the road tell gm they have a problem.

I have a 2004 chevy cavalier and recently the speedometer has just stopped working. Sometimes it decides to work due to weather conditions, but most likely it is on 80mph when im doing 20mph or it just sits at the bottom all together. I was about to have a mechanic fix my car and i did some online research. I found a website with 33 additional complaints with the same issue with a 2004 chevy cavalier(http://www.carcomplaints.com/chevrolet/cavalier/2004/accessories-interior/speedometer_stopped_working.shtml). This is a safety hazard to drivers and passengers and gm needs to recall this and correct the problem immediately, it is unacceptable.

2004 chevy cavalier instrument panel not working correctly. Temperature gauge has flipped and is blocking my speedometer needle from reading correctly.

Speedometer and gas gauge and rpm gauge not working correctly. This has been happening for probably 3 years. Started here and there and now, my speedometer it never working. Each day is different. Sometimes it will start on 35 mph and i can easily calculate my speed for about a half hour until it gets stuck. Other days it won't move at all. I never know how fast i am going. Also, gas gauge doesn't work, thank god my gas light does. One time firestone tried to fix it, and it worked for about 3 days, the it was messed up again. It used to only happen in extreme hot or cold weather conditions, but now it happens daily.

2004 chevy cavalier speedometer does not state the correct mph you are going will stick anywhere, the temperature gauge also has stopped working. It can be reset (the speedometer) once the car cools off but when you are driving and have no idea what speed you are going it is a major problem that needs to be corrected by chevy.

I have a 2004 chevy cavalier and the speedometer sticks. It say"s i am doing 80mph when i am actually doing 40mph. And when i am parked it say"s i am doing 50mph.

The instrument cluster on my 2004 chevrolet cavalier has failed to operate properly.

I have a 2004 chevy cavalier and one by one all the gauges have stopped working. In doing some research i have found this is a very common problem with this make and model. It is a safety issue not to have a speedometer!! i also do not have an rpm gauge, gas gauge or heat gauge. There needs to be a recall!!!!!

My temperature gauge overextended clockwise past the maximum temp thresh hold until the needle was pointing directly right (toward psgr). The tip of the needle, being stuck in that position, physically blocked the speedometer needle from going any higher than 10 mph. Eventually the speedometer just failed, the temperature gauge still continued to not work, and approximately 1 month after that the gas gauge failed as well (that needle is all over the place). The only gauge in the cluster that is working is the tachometer. This seems to be a popular defect for this car, as i have read many others-same problem. My car is a 2004 chevrolet cavalier and has less than 25,000 miles and has been taken excellent care of and now i'm afraid to drive it out of town. This problem needs to be a recall from gm. Very unhappy.

My 2004 chevrolet cavalier has instrument cluster issues.the speedometer, tachometer, fuel and temperature gauges do not work properly.i have read many post from cavalier owners with the same problem.it is a safety issue since i cannot tell how fast i am going.

I am concerned because of the ignition recall.for the last several months, at random times, if i touched the keys which were in the ignition, more often than not, the overhead dome light would either flicker or actually go on for several seconds to a minute before shutting off.this is not a result of pulling them so that they are not solidly inserted, but due to being jostled. This has happened when the car is running, or not running, and occasionally when i insert the key in the ignition.i do not believe this, in itself, is a problem unless it is an indication that this may progress into a more serious problem.

Consumer complained that whenmanually shifting vehicle stalled. The key had to be removed from the ignition to restart the vehicle.also, sometimes vehicle stalled when shifting too fast.occasionally, the stalling occurred on the highway.during this time it could be dangerous to have to remove the key from the ignition.the dealer claims that the vehicle was designed to do this.theproblemoccurred more than twelve times.

A strong fuel odor entered the inside of the vehicle when the ventswere used.this odor caused nausea and headaches to any one riding in the vehicle.at any temperature, the vehicle took a very long time to crank up.also, while driving at50 mph, the vehiclesuddenly decelerated and bogged down.the vehicle would eventually pick up speed and act as if nothing ever happened.these problems occurred eight times.there was rattle in the drivers side door panel due to the regulator, there was also an intermittent noise on the passenger side rear, the vehicle would not start due to the power train control module, the engine was hard to start at times and was unable to be duplicated, the engine would lose power, the driver door made a rubbing noise, the floor area was buckling, and the a/c displayed a burning smell. *sc

Consumer received a recall notice(04002) regarding the ignition circuit thermal.the dealer refused to do the work!!!service manager patricia barona.the consumer requested that the information given to be disreguarded because information was on the consumers 2001 that was traded for 2004.*tc

At times, during the past several months this vehicle has been hard to start. Had the fuel pump and ignition switch replaced, but did not seem to solve the problem. Recently, the car stalled out while driving and took 15 minutes to finally re-start. I have read online where this has been a problem for other owners of chevy cavaliers- hard to start and stalls out sometimes. Not sure what is causing the problem, because the check engine light does not come on and there is no code to diagnosis/read.

When starting the vehicle, every month or so it will turn over once and the power will shut off and when i let off the key it will come back on. Then try to start again and it will. Maybe a problem with the ignition or starter.

Electrical fire in a 2004 chevy cavalier. Always had electrical problems, check engine light has come on and speedometer sticks everytime it rains. The air bag light had come on and we were afraid that it was going to deploy and if it did we would have gotten into an accident. When it was continued to drive, all that was smelled was smoke and all of a sudden the interior lights all went out and the smoke became heavier and all the wires were dangling down and melted. The car was towed and needs to be rewired and that will cost about $1100.00. Good thing no one was hurt and it didn't all the way catch fire. I now don't have a vehicle and i am afraid to drive it when it gets fixed because i don't want it to happen again. I have heard from others that they have problems with the same car and how the speedometer sticks and other electrical problems.

Consumer startedvehicle to warm it up and went back into the office. Vehicle was in flames within 10 minutes. The flames were under the hood.

My 2004 cavalier has the dash cluster going out. Therefore, my speedometer is not working correctly. There have been several times that i have had to slam on brakes because i was going around a curve too fast, but thought that i was slow enough. The dealer has told me there is no recall because it is not a safety issue. Well, i feel that it is. This is a manufacturer's defect, but yet they are charging people to fix the cluster. The cost run up to $350.00 if not more. I am also at risk of getting a ticket. I have e-mailed gm, but have not received a response. I do know for a fact that this is happening to other 2004 models also from speaking with the local dealerships. Please help in this issue before somebody possibly is hurt.

Dt: consumer stated that the wiring harness behind the dashboard went bad, and then there was a clicking noise from the front end.consumer stated that there appeared to be an electrical problem with the vehicle because the radiohad to replaced 3 times, and the alarmwentoff at random.also, dealership replaced the body module control unit.the front end had a service bulletin on the wheel covers and the clicking noise was a result of this.they have fixed the problem with the wheel covers twice.

Bought a brand new 2004 cavalier approximately april 2004. Sincepurchase date, car has been into dealership due to loud grinding noises in brakes 3 times. First timetobest of my knowledge within 6 months of ownership. Every time i have been the noises are rust buildup on shoes and pads. The remedy was to sand the rust, it worked but temporarily. I had the car in again november 2005 for this same thing & my check engine light stayed on. My car was still under warranty. Thetech told me i had rust & the rotors were " a little out of round". He told me the car had 30,000 miles on & they couldn't do new brakes as warranty it would cost me about $140.00. The check engine light was attributed it to having some floats in tank from gas that affected a sensor. Wouldn't cause problems they said & it still happens. The 2nd visit to the dealer they fix a side mirror & defroster..didn't work. 1 week ago, i have use of radio & cd player only no lights/radio now. The next day i started car up my & speedometer says 35 mph idling. Going with traffic flow it registered 105 & is now stopped there. Mileage gauge, gas and other lights still work as does gas gauge. I called a local chevy dealership near me & inquired as to an aprox. Cost to have radio & speedometer fixed/looked at.warranty now is off. I was told labor be the expensive part..looking at $400 or more. I live on a fixed income & can't afford this. Brakes/radio/speedometer are nothing i caused. I was never offered to have brakes replaced. Speedometer issue is very dangerous. I have checked websites to see if there were complaints like mine& there are. I have guessed the incident date i cannot recallexact date i took car in for the 1st brake issue.

Dt:the contact statedthe dashboard light kept going out.the vehicle has been in repairshop four times for the same problem. The contact was on her way to the dealership to pick up thevehicle and was unsureif the problem had been corrected.

While driving home from work with my 2004 chevrolet cavalier, 4 dr sedan, vin #[xxx]traveling about 45 mph on monday, 8/8/05 during daylight hours ,i looked at the speedometer and lo and behold it registered zero. The zero reading continued for up to 20 minutes before it began to record speed.i brought it to lou bachrodt chevrolet the same day at 5500 n state rd. 7, coconut creek, fl 33073, telephone #(954) 247-3000, invoice [xxx]. Today, 8/9/05 and was told that they couldn't find anything, and therefore could not replace or repair the speedometer components and related equipment. Therefore, nothing was done and i was sent on my way. I feel my safety and the safety of others are at risk if this happens again which it probably will since there is no explanation for it.if i am going through a school zone and not know what speed i am traveling at, this could lead to a dangerous situation for the children, myself and other motorists. Updated 07/19/2012 information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

Gauges in car is not working.read on your site there is another 65 people who have the same problem.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that while driving 60 mph, the vehicle stalled and no warning lamp illuminated. The vehicle was taken to a local shop, who diagnosed that the timing chain guide bolts broke. As a result, the cylinder head, oil pump, and transmission were damaged. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not offer any assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 80,000.

Car shut off no power steering gauges shut off everything turned off but lights stayed on and flashers worked.

Car will not start consistently. Have to wait a couple of days, then it may start or not.but if it starts, it will not start again until days go by............ Ignition shut off on one occasion when operating on a public road. Loss of power, engine and power brakes.steering wheel did not lock but coasted vehicle off the road.

The contact owns a 2003 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that while driving approximately 55 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact restarted the vehicle and the vehicle was able to function properly. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where the failure was unable to be replicated. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000 and the current mileage was 133,000.

When driving the vehicle and hit a bump the ignition switch will cause the interior light to come and on occasion cause the car to shut off.

With less than 100 miles on the car it began to rev up on its own. It has been to the dealer on 9 different occasions. They even installed an on board computer and were able to see the problem that occurs. The mechanic says he believes it is a glitch in the computer and is unable to fix it. It has now begun to accelerate on its own while driving, and the only thing you can do is push in the clutch and hope the engine blows up. This is now a real safety issue. Gm refuses to do anything to correct this problem. We filed a lemon law case with them and they said they are unable to do anything.

While driving vehicle stalled. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

After consulting licensed mechanics, and one such nationally certified airplane-engine tech-mechanic, being ranked in the top three (3) of the nation's aviation mechanics industry from 1981-1983 period (and still has qualifications authority), [and before making a fool of myself], the consensus/verdict [by these professionals] was agreed that it borders on criminality (and i quote), that automakers are using plastic coverings and seals, as the engine's oil filter housing caps. Known (industry-wide) to exert pressures in 'pounds per-square-inch' ( lbs/psi) and extreme temperatures that these plastic materials--such as the oil filter-housing caps, cannot withstand.they also strip. It was explained to me by the certified airplane mechanic that, to understand the effects of pressurization theory behind that technology, and the knowledge that fifty-50 to sixty-60 pounds (lbs/psi) of pressure per-square-inch is being given to the plastic caps from the engine's internal combustion will cause any plastic cap, housed under such pressures to fail.he said he was surprised it did not cause engine failure two(2) years after being newly purchased.he said the science that industry insiders do not want us to know is that the proper semi-precious metals, as aluminum, copper and the like are perfect conductors of electricity and heat, allowing the metal to expand/contract according to temperatures and/or torque pressurization of the 50-60 lbs/psi being release to housing.even tampered steel would work as it would conform.but plastic once overheated will remain in warped state causing oil leakage in that area.this depressurization of engine physics and chemistry, a couple-to-few years later results in engine's crank case housing depressurizing to the point of cracking after pistons themselves giveway rendering engine being irreparable. My car should have flipped @ 70mph.

My 2004 chevy cavalier has suffered a number of defects since its purchase.while they did not result in any collisions or injuries, they easily could have.at 10,211 miles (8/31/2004) the water pump failed; luckily, this was covered under warranty, and the pump, along with several seals and gaskets were replaced. At 29,522 miles (5/23/2005), white smoke began billowing out of the exhaust.multi chevrolet in union, nj discovered that a cylinder head was defective, the head gaskets were cracked, and the timing chain needed to be replaced.these repairs were again covered by the warrantyat 48,241 miles (6/9/2006), the instrument cluster and a suspension beam failed.luckily, we had purchased an extended warranty, and the repairs were again covered.finally, at 74,000 miles (5/10/10), the vehicle suffered catastrophic engine failure.luckily, my son [xxx] was driving on a local road, and was able to pull over safely.after having the vehicle towed, [xxx], service manager of bill defouw chevrolet in lafayette, indiana, informed us that every lifter was broken and every valve was bent, and the pistons were irreparably damaged as well.because the vehicle is outside of warranty, gm has refused to replace the engine, and we cannot afford to do so out of pocket.we are reporting this in case other buyers of this model/year or later have experienced issues, and are currently driving unsafe vehicles.information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).

When driving my car at times, it will accelerate on it's own, causing it to run rpms into the red, need to shut car off so it does not excel on it's own. This has only happened a few times.. Very dangerous, the 1st time was in dec, 2010 in an ice storm, so i thought it was just a fluke and it was frozen now it is in the 80s and it did it yesterday sept 6th 2011 what is causing this??? is ita defect??? anyone else have this???

Dt:while driving the contact's vehicle was involved in an accident due to a possible medical condition.the vehicle caught on fire immediately upon impact.the vehicle was deemed a total loss from the insurance company.a representative from the manufacturer inspected the vehicle and was unable to determine the cause of the fire due to the extensive damage.the solid fuel lines were intact as well as the gasoline tank.updated 02/26/06.

*sc

Car will accelerate on it's ownusually occurs while slowing down or while making a turnpressing the brake hard slows the car but it continues to apply powerwhat stops the engine from continuing to accelerateis to push the clutch in, at the moment the enginewill accelerate to 6500 rpm then return tonormal like it is completing some cycle.it is very dangerous in the winter.we have expected a recall but nothing.i can guarantee a lawsuit if my wife and kidsare injured.this is a true case of sudden acceleration thatthe feds can investigate.

While driving 65 mph the engine stalled without warning. The driver was able to pull off the road and waited a while then started the vehicle again. The cause had not been determined. Please provide additional information.

Idle miss while auto is in gear (automatic). Initial occurrence 15000-20000 miles. Started when at a stop light you could feel the miss it was every 30-45 seconds. No check engine light associated with problem. Has gotten worse, still no check engine light. Now it stalls and you can watch the tachometer drop 25-50 rpm. Took it to the dealership under extended warranty @ 512010 miles. Dealership said it was #2 cylinder misfire. Changed ignition module & coil pack. I picked it up and drive it 1.5 miles and it was the same. Took it back and they swapped injectors with another cylinder and spark plugs, changed fuel filter. Picked it up again. Same problem. Dealership said they cannot fix it until there is a check engine light, even though problem could be duplicated every time car was taken back to the dealership. I had the service writer and the actual mechanic in the car with me each time and they agreed there was a problem. As of this date 1-18-10 problem still exists.

Gas gauge went haywire which interfered with the temperature gauge, which interfered with the speedometer.i have seen over 1,000 complaints of the same nature.gm needs to recall and fix this problem.2004 chevrolet cavalier.*ln

Dt*: the contact stated that there were three problems with the vehicle.the automatic windows failed to roll either up or down. The second problem occurred with the trunk; water continually leaked into the trunk. The third problem was related to the brakes; they were no longer working at only 25000 miles.the brake light illuminated and made a squealing noise as soon as brake pressure was applied. The dealer determined the trunk was not installed properly. Although the dealer fixed the trunk, the problem persists. When it rain, water still leaks in the trunk.the water leak has been an ongoing problem since july 2003.

Low and high-beam headlights appear dim when turned on compared to other cars.may be due to corroded/defective wiring. Appears to be a very common problem with this chevrolet model.looking for recall information related to this issue.

2004 chevrolet cavalier exterior brake light and back turn signal are not functioning.

When i turn on my car defroster, it starts popping very loud.at one time it started popping when i set the car at idle, and when i returned to the car, it was filled with smoke or dust.i had to air out the car for a while before i could drive it.the defroster doesn't pop every time, and it quits after about 30 minutes each time.also, when i bought the car, it needed a new console, so i had it replaced.the day-time running lights go out and flash at people.when they go out, the service light comes on.i have to drive with my headlights on so the day-time running lights do not flash at people.

When i brake to slow down or stop, my head lights dim significantly. It happens with the high beams and low beams. My front passenger seatbelt locks without the brakes engaged, and needs to be unbuckled to unlock.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that the head lamps on his vehicle looked as if there was a glaze on them. They were sand blasted and now he cant evensee the light bulb. The dealer was contacted and stated that they would sell him a kit to clean the head lamps. The contact stated that the dealer should beresponsible to repair the head lamps. No repairs were made. The failure and current mileage was 136000.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. While driving approximately 25 mph, the vehicle experienced unintended acceleration even though the brake pedal was engaged. The contact mentioned that the turn signal lights also failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was unknown.

My 2004 chevy cavalier 2.2l base/sedan is well maintained. Three months after the purchase the fuel pump stopped working. Replaced by dealership under warranty.a year later the fuel pump was replaced again.warranty period over. Cost me $896. Recently the fuel pump stopped working while i was driving.i was making a left turn at the intersection and proceeded to make the left and all of a sudden the engine stalled and steering froze forcing me into the light post after the turn.this caused two other vehicles to collide to avoid hitting me.the service garage diagnosed the problem to be the fuel pump.cost me $750 and $1900 for front end damage.i contacted the dealership head office and the declined comment.instead they blamed be for not replacing the fuel filter.again, this vehicle has always been maintained and serviced at the dealership, as well as the filter/fuel pump.my friend had a similar experience 2 yrs ago and gave me this website to file a complaint.2 yrs and nothing yet?thank you for allowing the manufacturers and all involved to get away with this! after doing research, this vehicle is known for this problem.i will not sell this vehicle and will not drive this vehicle to protect the public from fatalities.this vehicle is going straight to the junkyard.god bless america.

96,000 miles fuel pump fails while sitting idle in drive way.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that the fuel evaporative emission light illuminated. He inspected the vehicle and noticed that the fuel filler tube was covered with rust. An authorized dealer stated that the problem was common because of the road salts used in his particular state. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The current and failure mileage was approximately 83,000.updated 05/13/11 updated 07/08/11

The vehicle would jerk forward unexpectedly as soon as being filled up with gas. The consumer took the vehicle to a mechanicand results showed that the gas cap needed to be replaced because it was cracked and releasing gas.

On 2004 chevrolet cavalier fuel pump went outa tonly 76000 miles.been having problems idling.

So when my gas gauges get down below the half line the check gauges light comes up and i know for sure that my car isn't yet empty. What do i do?

1)on 12/23/04, i was a passenger in a chevy cavilier van rented 12/22 thru avis, phoenix airport.2)when exiting the vehicle, the automatic door (passenger side, rear) went back so quickly and with so much force that it snapped my wrist back (hyperextended) and wedged it between door and van.i had to open van using outside handle.3)it was so painful that i went to emergency (mayo clinic).no broken bones.they said it was sprained, possible torn or bruised tendons.they put in a brace and told me to see my dr. Upon return from vacation.4)inspite of several attempts to get someone's attention at avis or gm concerning the danger of this vehicle, as of today, i still have not received a call back from any one of authority.representatives at both locations were surprised by my request that the van be taken out of the rental fleet and gave me no reassurances that they would stop renting.5)on 12/28, i saw a report on local news that the van had been recalled for what seems to be the same problem.gm tells me the recall only affected models thru 2001. 6)both companies promised me i would receive a call from someone qualified in this area by yesterday, 12/29.neither comapny has called and both offices are closed again.7)meanwhile, the van was returned on 12/28 and if rented, could cause serious damage to someone, especially a child!please get someone's attention on this problem!!thanks!

Clutch fluid leak from slave cylinder detected 4/19/14.fluid level in master cylinder was low but not dangerously so, so i added dot-3 to master cylinder.evening of 4/22 noticed no new leakage on garage floor.on morning of 4/23 en route to work, noticed clutch engaged much closer to floor than usual, and had much more "play" between it's normal position and when clutch began to engage.in city-street traffic, speed limit 50 mph, clutch began to seize, causing inability to shift into another gear.clutch pedal to floor, car in gear, right foot off gas, car moved forward under power.turned around to head back home and within two miles clutch went back to mostly normal operation.after another 3 miles (the entire trip was on city streets with speed limits between 40 and 55 mph, including lots of stoplights=more shifting) clutch seized up entirely.pedal flat to floor, needed toe under lever to pull it back up.stuck in 3rd gear, no amount of pumping the pedal would alleviate the problem.upon stopping, checked fluid level in master cylinder and it is slightly lower than when it was filled on 4/19, but level had not changed in 24 hours.unable to shift into any gear, car will need to be towed home then to shop.

I was driving my -2004 cavalier after having the slave cylinder replaced 2 month's prior. Nothing seemed out of place until my clutch peddle went to the floor and did not return. I pulled over after nearly colliding with another vehicle investigating the potential problem. I looked in the clutch reservoir and noticed no fluid. I placed more fluid in the reservoir manually moving the clutch peddle up and down until i had a peddle. I then made it home so i could further investigate the problem. The linkage for the shifter had over time rubbed a hole in the hydraulic clutch line causing failure in the whole system. I am not one to complain about vehicle issues because most of the time the issues do not almost kill me but in this case had i not known what to do to get the shifter out of gear i would have hit a ever slowing line of traffic at 70 mph causing a massive accident. Gm please recall your mistake before you kill more people with your faulty craftsmanship.

In the parking lot where i work my car would not start. When moving the automatic transmission lever it did not catch on to anything. The car just rolled backwards and i had to immediately press on the brakes preventing an accident. My car had to be towed to the auto shop. Diagnosis: shifter cable was detached from transmission. Previously on 09/13/2011 the same thing happened to my car. The shifter cable broke and i had to be towed to lou bachrodt chevrolet both times. The 2nd time invoice no. Cwcs692729 $502.24 and $477.55 invoice no.cwcs149491 the first time. This car should be recalled. Two times is too many.

Bought used had 109000 first time the clutch went out on me i was exhilarating to move into heavy freeway traffic and it goes out, especially as a young woman i was very scarred for my life to this day i have nightmares, got it fixed but no really cause it still does it we just have to keep puttingdot 3 at the clutch line. Its annoying, a waste of time, waste of my money, and has caused domestic disputes. Come on do something please!!

Replaced defective shifter control cable. I have a 2004 chevy cavalier, 4 cylinder engine, mileage: 40,850.i am the orignial owner, purchased it new from chevrolet. I became aware of the defectwhen i came out of work and went to my parked car, started the car, and when i shifted my automatic transmission lever, the car would not move. None of the gears were working. I had to call a tow truck and wait over two hours and had it towed to a chevrolet dealer 10 miles away for diagnosis and repair. It cost me over $400.00 to get it repaired by the chevrolet dealer. I asked chevrolet if there was a recall on the shifter control cable and he said there was none that he knew of. I searched the internet for some information on the shifter control cableand found numerous complaints on the same thing happening to them with the same type car.this car should be recalled by general motors - chevrolet division. This is a very dangerous thing to happen to anyone.i could have been on the road or parked on a hill which might have caused harm to me or any other driver of my car.

Dt*:the contact stated that the 2004 chevrolet cavalier has been having a continuous problem with the cruise control.when the vehicle stops on dry roads, it will stall and shut off completely.the auto air control system sensor and the entire cruise control system have both been replaced twice. The parts were replaced at a service dealer.the contact stated that the automatic transmission will not shift gears smoothly, and will remain in a lower gear at higher speeds.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving various speeds and attempting to shift gears, the clutch did not engage. After several attempts, the clutch engaged and the gears were switched.the vehicle was seen by a dealer and the dealer determined the clutch assembly of the manual transmission needed to be replaced.

I have 2004 chevy cavalier with less than 24k mileage. On august 4, 2007,the clutch pad suddenly did not back up on my way home. I cannot change the speed. When aaa guy came to tow, he found out there was no hydaulic liquid. I bought the liquid and added it into the hydraulic liquid reservoir. When i started my car and pressed the clutch, the aaa guy found all the liquid was coming out from the clutch line between master cyclinder to transmission. When i checked the line, i found out the clutch line was touching the wire box corner all the time. There is a hole in that touching point. It is very clear that this is a design problem for this kind of car.the gm chevy dealer said the purchased date had passed three years. No warranty at all. When i search the web for help. I found the other people complain the same problem too. If you need more detail information, i still keep the broken part. I can send the picture or the broken part. Thanks, jun shen

My 2004 chevrolet cavalier has less that 41,000 miles on it. I was about 180 miles form home when the clutch went out. I was told by the chevrolet dealership in that city that the clutch cylinder, clutch plates, and clutch fluid need to be replaced. Also, the extended warranty, which covers up to 75,000 miles, does not cover "external parts". Which is what the clutch is considered. It's going to cost me around $1400 to get it fixed. In my opinion, the clutch should not have failed on a vehicle this new. Had i been on the freeway or busy street, there would have been a major accident. I feel that this problem needs to be considered a manufacturer defect, not normal wear and tear...

Clutch slave cylinder failed, slave cylinder is inside the bell housing. If this had happened in traffic it could have caused an accident.

My 2004 cavalier has had two slave cylinders to fail. Clutch goes to the floor failing to release the clutch.

I have 2004 chevy cavalier with less than 40k mileage. On august 31, 2007, the clutch pad suddenly did not back up on my way home. I checked this website and found i had the same issue as another consumer. All the liquid was coming out from the clutch line between master cylinder to transmission. When i checked the line, i found out the clutch line was touching the wire box corner all the time. There is a hole in that touching point. It is very clear that this is a design problem for this kind of car. The gm chevy dealer said the purchased date had passed three years. No warranty at all. When i search the web for help. I found the other people complain the same problem too.updated 10/24/07.

Clutch started feeling slushy and then failed after a few months.clutch stays to the floor.repair to be done, replace slave cylinder.

My 2004 chevy cavalier was purchased may 2004 new off the lot.since then, my clutch system has had to be replaced almost every year.it first stopped working at 36,000 miles, just 6,000 after factory warranty ran out.it then stopped working again while still under part warranty which lasts 12,000 miles.it again stopped working just a few thousand miles after that warranty ran out.and now has gone out for the fourth time in under 3,000 miles.i can always tell when the system is becoming faulty after only a few thousand miles, however due to the fact that labor is not included in any warranty, i drive it until the clutch system stops working.this has not been of any benefit to me or my car.however, i should not have to be replacing any part(s) this often, so i should not have to worry in the first place.the answer i get to what the problem isalways the same, the slave cylinder o ring is "leaking like a siv" and the master cylinder has gone out.and due to these two issues, it effects the quality of my clutch fly wheel.i see no end in sight for this problem, i can not even get rebuilt parts for this problem to save myself money and as stated before, labor will never be covered under warranty.i have now paid for half the purchase price of my car in parts and labor as it was new off the lot.this lemon of a car is costing me well over $1,100 every year in repairs to the clutch system and i can not afford it any more.i have not heard yet what customer service for chevy is going to do for this but i felt that this was worth you hearing about so as to help others after me who may have the same problem and to also help me with my current problem.

I have an excessive grinding feel within the clutch pedal. A tsb for this has been issued and so far the vehicle is 6 months old. 2 clutch assemblies have been installed and one flywheel. The original tsb states do not replace the clutch components and flywheel because this will not correct the problem. Gm, why are you going against your own technical experts advise? want to prevent a devastating recall by hoodwinking your customers in saying the problem is designed in the transmission as normal? this has to be up channeled to higher government officials.lemon laws and ignorant and complacent customers who are afraid of going the distance will only allow their investments to be traded or just live with the complaint.looking at the history of 2000-2004 cavaliers, sunfires and malibus with this transmission and engine combination is only the tip of the iceberg.i wish there was a forum to allow cross communication between owners for a class action law suit. This is america. For crying out loud i get better return service at wal mart for defective merchandise.

My 2004 cavalier has had two master/slave cylinders to fail. Clutch goes to the floor failing to release the clutch pedal.dealer tried to charge me $800 when i had warranty.almost caused accident because of this.very unprofessional service advisors. Will never recommend a gm- chevrolet vehicle to anyone ever. Gm = nightmare.don't buy gmever!!!!

Clutch pedal started to stop short. While driving through light snow i pressed the pedal to shift gear before a slight turn and incline the pedal stayed down. The lack of power to the wheels within 5 seconds caused the vehicle to fishtail and i was not able to control the vehicle even while trying to brake and go into the spin to correct. The vehicle spun around going backwards then the front end tried swinging back and hit the center median damaging the front end-bumper ripped off, reinforcement bent/folded, fenders warped, both headlights broken, condenser slightly folded to leak, radiator support warped, frame bent. The slave cylinder was leaking...again this was the second time. Pedal would start to stop short then the slave would start to leak. First time the dealer replaced the slave and everything was working. Then this happened. I was told that because the second incident was "just out of the repair warrant by 800 mi they-the dealer- was "liable for nothing" and would do nothing to help." the vehicle's slave was replaced and everything was working-with the clutch-when in 2009 the problem happened again. I was able to take the car to the dealer again...again...again and the master cylinder for the clutch was replaced.-problem was solved. Have not had a problem since......this whole issue shows that the vehicle was not properly diagnosed which caused the second failure and the accident.

When i was dropping my sister off at the airport, i was leaving in my cavalier which is a manual transmission i put the car in reverse and engaged the clutch it stuck on and would not come off. I had to slam on the emergency brake and brakes to stall out the car. Once the car stalled it also came to rest against a tree, which thankfully did not cause any damage except a few scratches. On further investigation i had noticed that a hole has worn in the hydraulic rubber line from the master clutch cylinder. The hose was rubbing against a wiring harness metal brace bracket just below the clutch master cylinder. It could have caused alot of damage or personal injury or even death in the right circumstances. I had just left the halifax water front where there were about 6000 people and if the problem happened. There could have been major problems. I would like someone to look into this problem. When it happened there was no warning.

Driving home from work through city streets and suddenly was not able to disengage clutch when attempting to shift from 2nd to third. Transmission stuck in 2nd. Luckily i was only a couple miles from home. Further investigation on my part found clutch hydraulic hose had hole worn into it due to bracket location. Poor design with respect to hose configuration and bracket location. High potential for personal injury when operating.

While driving home from thanksgiving i was unable to shift my manual transmission, and i noticed that the clutch appeared stuck to the floor. The remainder of the way home (30 miles) if i slowed down the would stall as i could not push the clutch in. The car, a 2004 cavalier, has a total of 42000 miles on it. Upon getting the car to the dealer i was told the master cylinder, the slave.

1. Seat belt won't retract. 2. Drivers side seat dropped will not go back to upright position.

Can't safely install a car seat because the safety belts do not properly retract. Therefore the car seat is not stable. The vehicle was stationary.

Dt*: the contact stated the plastic housing on both rear outer seat belts fractured and detached.the seat belts also did not hold the occupants securely.the vehicle was taken to a service dealer, where the dealer determined that the problem was caused by normal wear and tear.the manufacturer was also notified.

Drivers seat belt more than twelve inches shorter than passengers seat belt.

When i brake to slow down or stop, my head lights dim significantly. It happens with the high beams and low beams. My front passenger seatbelt locks without the brakes engaged, and needs to be unbuckled to unlock.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier.the contact stated that the springs in the driver's seat were exposed and began to unravel.in addition, the seat adjuster was damaged on the left bottom of the driver's seat.as a result, the seat could not be adjusted and was stuck in one position.the vin was unknown.the failure mileage was 100,000 and current mileage was 104,000.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier.the contact noticed a large bulge in the rear driver's side seat.the dealer stated that the seat needed to be disassembled and the spring or the entire seat needed to be replaced.the contact would be responsible for the repair costs.the vehicle has not been repaired.the failure and current mileages were 24,700.

We have three chevrolet cavaliers (years: 1999, 2000, 2004).all three of these vehicles have at least one crack in the part of the dash that is immediately next to the windshield.the concern is in a significant crash if this crack would cause facial or upper body injuries or even death.in addition, only the 2004 cavalier has had repeated issues with the drivers seat -- springs are coming through the rear upper portion of the seat, the seat cushion is less on the left side of the drivers seat than the right and the recliner handle has broken twice (was repaired once by tincher williams chevrolet in london, ky; but remains broken today).today's date was used because there has been no actual incident.

Dt:the back seat fold up while it is locked it.the consumer took the car to the dealer and they fixed the clip, but it still continued to fold. The consumer took the vehicle back to the dealer and they said there was nothing else they could do.the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer where it was purchased.the only thing they could offer was to order the bottom part of the seat, but manufacturer told the consumer the clip would be the same. The consumer called the bbb and manufacturer. The consumers car is still under warranty. The manufacturer said to take the car back to dealer and let them attempt to put a back seat in it.

When having my brakes changed it was noticed that on the rear brakes only half the pad touches the drum, the lower half does not touch it only the top.

Dt*:the contact stated while traveling 45 mph, the brakes failed.there was significant extended stopping distance while depressing the brake pedal. The vehicle was stopped when hit by another vehicle.there was a police report taken at the scene and the contact received minor injures although the seat belt was worn.the vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic that determined the brakes failed.the insurance company determined the vehicle totaled.

Back right rear spring broke on the brake, according to dealership this was the 3rd one they had seen on this model. The tire locked up completely and this has now caused problems with the idling of the vehicle.

In rainy conditions, my cavalier does not seem to stop well and the abs is overactive. Puddles, wet roads, rain, and snow seem to have adverse effects on my stopping abilities. In two different rain storms i have almost hit a possum, a cop, a tree limb, other cars, and missed an intersection; non of which had anything to do with speeding. The lack of stopping ability is dangerous to me and others driving around me. My car is scheduled for a diagnostics check to find out what can be done about this problem. I do not feel safe driving my car anymore.

In wet conditions my 2004 cavalier does not stop well. When i went through the car wash it almost didn't stop when i approached the road, narrowly avoiding an accident. When i took it to the dealer, they told me that they didn't have any problems when they washed the car and then drove it. So they sent me away and didn't fix anything. I'm scared that my teenagers may not be safe in this car in wet conditions. I have no problems with my envoy or my vibe at the same car wash. I've worked at gm for 30 years and take good care of my cars.

I have noticed excessive brake fad at speeds of higher than 50 miles per hour, but not in excess of 65 miles per hour. The problem also happens when the roads are little more than damp. It would seem that the brake pads and/or shoes are either too small for the car or the material is not of good quality. I have 2 other chevrolet vehicles that do not have this problem. Only my 2004 cavalier has this problem.

I have a 2004 chevy cavalier which has been in no accidents and is very well taken care of. The paint on this car, and other cars like it, is peeling and chipping all over the place for no reason. The door edges, bumpers, hood, and fender all have chips of paint missing or about to fall off. The clear coat on the car is also very bad and is scratched very easily and washing the car sometimes does more bad than good. I have also noticed that the rotors and drums warp very easily on this car. I have had to replace the rotors and might have to replace the drums soon. I am not the only person with such a problem that i have talked to.

Possible brake or accelerator defect in 2004 chevrolet cavalier. *mr the brake pedal was three inches higher than the accelerator.the vehicle was taken to the dealer in which they found no problems. *sc

I've owned the 2004 chevrolet cavalier since it had 2000 miles. It currently has around 85000. When driving vehicle in april of 2017 a greasy bolt came flying out of the steering column area. After doing some research i've found many complaints and accidents due to faulty "pins" that hold the steering wheel tight. Now my 2004 chevrolet cavalier steering wheel moves to the right and left. This condition is very dangerous and has occurred in many gm/ chevrolet cars. Vehicle is currently at a chevrolet dealership and being checked out.

The vehicle steering is not tight and i am not able to tightly control the movement completely when going over bumps or making turns. The wheel steering feels loose and unsecured.when driving the speed limit on the highway, the vehicle drifts regardless if i have control.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. While driving approximately 60 mph, the steering suddenly malfunctioned. The vehicle spun out and crashed into a second vehicle. No injuries were reported and a police report was filed. The vehicle was taken to a dealer, but the cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 100,000.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. While driving approximately 2 mph and making a turn, the power steering failed without warning. The steering wheel became extremely difficult to mavnuever. The failure was permanent. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 08e063000 (steering). The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unavailable.

Every time i go to my job my power steering reservoir becomes empty after i put one or more quarts in the reservoir. Anytime i drive at highway speeds i sway back and forth no matter how much control i have over the vehicle. My steering gets so hard to the point where i almost crash every time i drive my car anywhere because i have no power steering or don't have a lot of control over the steering because it becomes so tight.

Around 4:00pm after getting off work. I was driving home and i went to make a left turn, my steering wheel moved up then down diagonally about a inch; inch and a half. It does it every time now when any kind of upward pressure is put on the steering wheel. I don't know how serious of a problem this is, but it does seem if it gets any worse it could effect your driving ability of the car.

I currently drive a 2004 chevy cavalier ls, i have had trouble with the power steering for a few years. The vehicle will drive and steer fine for a while, then it will begin to make a low grumbling noise when i slow down and turn. The steering becomes steadily more difficult. I eventually took it in for repair. They told me that it was a slow leak in my steering fluid and instead of paying to fix it, to keep filling it with fluid whenever i start hearing the noise. So far, i've only lost the power steering once - luckily i was in my driveway. Filling the power steering works as a quick fix for a few weeks. I've also notice that when i got to open the power steering fluid cap - it appears that the fluid has been "boiling" or foaming for a while. I'm not sure if that helps, but it has been something i've noticed. Thanks.

Car shut off no power steering gauges shut off everything turned off but lights stayed on and flashers worked.

Lost partial control of the steering because sheer pen released and erratic speedometer-( instrument cluster failure )

Doing my morning paper route.went to turn left in a cul-de-sac and the steering tilt broke.the steering wheel was going all kind of directions.i have two newspapers wedged into the right side and the bottom so i can drive it until i can somehow get it fixed. I have three or four parts that fell into the floorboard.all i was doing was turning the steering wheel to the left when i broke and the parts fell off.this is a 2004 chevrolet cavalier.i bought it in 2009.this is the first major problem i've had with the car.it seems that this shouldn't ever happen to any car.i have not had any accidents in this car.i can still steer, but the tilt is broken and the wheel is hard to keep still.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. While attempting a turn at speeds of 8 mph, the steering column fractured from the vehicle and fell into the contacts lap. The contact was able to stop the vehicle without incident. The vehicle was examined by an independent mechanic and the contact was informed that there were screws missing from the steering column. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 130,012.

While driving at 55 mph consumer found ithard to steer the vehicle.consumer slowly drove the vehicle homechecked under the hood, and found that steering fluid was covering the engine compartment.also, the hose connecting the steering fluid pump was not connected properly.the clamp was on the hose, but not clamped onto the connector. Dealer replaced power steering pump. *la

2004 chevy cav. Needs new rack and pinion steering assembly. Was told by mech that he had to replace 3 other cav's rack and pinion systems due to malfunctions. What is the deal with these rack systems. I have 70555 miles on my car. Was told by mech that cav's with lesser mileage needed replacing. Mech said this system needs to be looked at. And should be fixed by chevy.

2004 chevy cavalier.back door will not stay close.i have it locked now but can not open it.i am afraid while my child is sitting back there the door will swing open. Please help!

*sc

Dt:the sun visors do not have the snap to keep them in place.this allows them to slip down while the consumer is driving.this is the only problem with the vehicle.this first started happening around 6-1-05.

I left the vehicle running in driveway for less than 5 minutes. Vehicle was full of black smoke and within minutes was totally engulfed in flames.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated while the mechanic was changing the oil she was notified that the entire frame was completely corroded. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician verified the failure and stated that the frame needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 130,000. The current mileage was 139,000.

The garnish molding-windshield pillar-driver's side fell partly offblocking my visibility while driving home from work. It was never touched and for no reason it fell off and to this day i am unable to reattach it..

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that water was leaking into the interior of the vehicle. As a result, there was a mildew smell in the vehicle and corrosion started to develop. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who was unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage was 66,000.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the hood failed to remain closed and struck the windshield. As a result, the windshield wipers failed to operate. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis but they were unable to duplicate the problem. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 77,000.

Hood out of alignment keeps catching on fender and plastic on window.

Upon delivery of new 2004 chevrolet cavalier, it was discovered that two of the four bolts that hold the trunk lid to the vehicle were broken completely off. Also, the rear window had to be removed and new weather stripping had to be applied by the dealer body shop. The weather stripping that was applied at the factory in lordstown was not installed properly. The trunk and rear seat was soaked with rain water the day after delivery to me. The brand new vehicle was in the body shop for a total of 6 days. Chevrolet was notified immediately of these problems by me.

Dt: contact states there is a water leak in his trunk caused by the car not being properly welded during manufacturing.the water leak causes mold and mildew to form on the carpeting and the interior of the vehicle.this mold and mildew is causing illness to the occupants of the vehicle.the service dealerapplied seam sealer to the vehicle, but did not remedy the problem.the interior and carpet has been replaced once..the consumer is afraid to use the spare tire because the water has caused it to rust.the service dealer stated they would have to replace the interior and carpet again.this service dealer contacted general motors, and stated they would no longer work on this vehicle because the consumer picked up the vehicle too early from the dealership.

A winding noise was heard from the front while driving. At various speeds the noise escalated repeatedly. Consumer took vehicle to the dealer for inspection, andmechanic claimedthat this was a problem, butdealership hadno fixed it.

The vehicle steering is not tight and i am not able to tightly control the movement completely when going over bumps or making turns. The wheel steering feels loose and unsecured.when driving the speed limit on the highway, the vehicle drifts regardless if i have control.

Noticed squeaking noise on front wheels when turning.

Back right rear spring broke on the brake, according to dealership this was the 3rd one they had seen on this model. The tire locked up completely and this has now caused problems with the idling of the vehicle.

The speedometer and tachometer register below zero when stopped or in motion. No way to tell the speed or rpm. This is a safety issue to all on the road. If controlling speed is not a safety issue worth recalling why do we have speed limits? nhtsa needs to take this seriously and launch a recall as this is a major issue and not isolated its very widespread and the fact they have neglected it shows there real lack of concern for safety.

In the winter of 2009, my speedometer began to malfunction.as i would decelerate, my speedometer would maintain position at the last highest speed and upon acceleration, the needle would incline again from that point.this pattern repeats itself until the needle completely circles around past 110 mph to get itself stuck on the plastic portion below the speedometer.fortunately it didn't occur often that winter; however the next winter it was a constant occurrence, so much so that i begin to navigate speed based on rpm.this winter, that is of no use because both my speedometer and rpm gauges are malfunctioning as well as my gas gauge.it seems that once the vehicle is warm, they begin to function once again but it is necessary to turn off the ignition and continuously turn the key without igniting the starter for the gauges to return to normal position a few notches at a time.i have been told by dealerships to have the undercarriage washed at a car wash but was recently informed that i may have to replace my dashboard module/cluster by a gentleman who had experienced the same issues.i hope this corrects my issue but it would seem that, with so many cavalier owners experiencing the same issues, a solution should have been reached by now.it takes considerable time, cost, and patience to handle these malfunctions when the dealerships themselves can not provide their customers insight on such a common issue .

Car will not start consistently. Have to wait a couple of days, then it may start or not.but if it starts, it will not start again until days go by............ Ignition shut off on one occasion when operating on a public road. Loss of power, engine and power brakes.steering wheel did not lock but coasted vehicle off the road.

I haven't made a payment on my car for about a year. I call the finance company, back in feb 2007, to find out why they haven't repossessed it yet. They had told me they had repoed the car and considered it a total loss. I feel they had done wrong by me because i still have the car in question. If this is true about what they did, i would like 3 things. A clear title sent to me, a zero balance, a good credit rating and if any legal fees they pay them. Can you do anything to get this cleared up.

Erratic and erroneous speed indicator. Speed indicator points to 55-60 mph while vehicle is at a stop and indicates 110+ mph while actual speed is 50-55 mph. Currently, problem occurs after vehicle is driven around 100 miles. A simple powering off the ignition does not clear problem. This problem is very upsetting and unsettling. General motors current cost to it customers of$660 for correcting this problem is inexcusable. This is a defective material safety issue and as such should be subject to a safety recall !

I have had multiple problems with the speed odometer in this car. I can see by several complaints on carcomplaint.com i am only 1 out of several hundred. It will sometimes say i am going 100 when i am going 25. It will sometimes stay stuck on 55 when i am at a complete stop. I never know how fast i am going. This is very dangerous and could result in an accident or even death of me or someone else. This is very expensive to have replaced and by other peoples complaints to me it sounds like a dad part produced by gm. I feel that gm should recall these and have them replaced before it results in a death of someone. I will never buy another gm vehicle if they don't recall these parts and replace them since there are so many people out there with the same problem.

The cluster is out and i can't tell how much fuel, the speedometer is out and also the temp gage as well.

Takata recall windshield wiper linkage broken while car in motion on a rainy day and my car stalls everyday while at light even shuts off if i'm at light

Instrument cluster unreliable.speedometer sticks/stops working/jumps.gas gauge quit working.rpm gauge jumps or drops at random.there was a recall on the 2004 gm pickups/suvs i do believe...why not the car?i've seen countless complaints online of others' cavalier's with the exact same problems.

Accelerator stuck on 2004 chevy cavalier.engine was wide open and gas pedal was down to floor. Got car off road with no incident. Cable was found to be frayed fromcorrosion and stuck inside housing. Called gm and received no assistance . They said vehicle was out of warranty. Replace with new cable at repair shop. This should never happen on a modern era vehicle.

While driving down the road my speedometer for stuck. I know i was going 60 when it happened because that's what it is stuck at.it isn't the first time this has happened. My car has had multiple problems with the windshield wipers, windows, and engine light.

Speedometer has stopped functioning.safety issue because i can no longer tell how fast i am driving.

In january 08 vehicle tach went reverse direction, then jumped erratically. In march 08started showing 65 mph when vehicle doing 35. In may 08 speedometer started stopping at 20 mph when moving or when car shut off. In june 08 speedometer and tach have both started going in reverse direction. This is a 2004 chevrolet cavalier with 28000 miles, 2.2 l with automatic transmission. I do not like the idea that while driving the car on a two lane road by the speedometer that we might be rear ended while driving to slow.

I have a 2004 chevy cavalier and the speedometer sticks. It say"s i am doing 80mph when i am actually doing 40mph. And when i am parked it say"s i am doing 50mph.

Intermittently while consumer's foot was on the brake pedal vehicle experiencedsudden acceleration. When this occurred the vehicle was put in neutral.enginecontinued to revfor 5 minutes, then it suddenly died down. This failurealmost caused two rear end collisions. Vehicle was taken todealership 8 times, but they only worked on it 5 times. They also test drove the vehicle for 44 miles, no problem was found.

Several times since purchasing this car in 2009, the cruise control would shut off without warning at highway speeds from 55 to 70. Still does this on occasion.

Speedometer stuck at 60mph. Its not that old of a car and only has 58 thousand miles on it this should be a recall with all the people complaining the same thing happened with the low miles ridiculous!

Lost partial control of the steering because sheer pen released and erratic speedometer-( instrument cluster failure )

As in the past few years this has happened a few time. As noted here already. I was driving about 40 miles per hour when my car accelerated all by it self to the point i had to shut the car off in traffic. Then restarted and it was driving on its own at 40 miles an hour like cruise was on, i do not use cruise then when i played with the cruise button it went back to normal can't take it in costs to much to look at but it has been a problem since i bought this car just never can have it do it when i take it in and they can't help me if it is not doing it at that time. I want this on record so if something happens to me there is a record of this happening, again since i bought the car it happens whenever it wants to...

While driving the gas pedal gets stuck and accelerates.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact was entering an on-ramp and slightly applied the brakes when the vehicle abnormally accelerated.the contact pulled over onto the shoulder and was forced to shift the vehicle into park while the vehicle was still moving in order to stop the vehicle completely.the manufacturer was not contacted.the dealer was making an attempt to assist the contact with diagnosing and repairing the defect.the vehicle was not repaired.the failure mileage was 117,379 and the current mileage was 117,460.

When i'm driven about 25 miles the accelerator stays stuck and the speed keep goin up if you don't put the brakes

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal and starting the vehicle, the rpms increased excessively. The contact also stated that while driving 25 mph, the vehicle erroneously accelerated and independently shifted into neutral. The vehicle was taken to the dealer several times where the contact was informed that the speed control may have failed. The vehicle had not been diagnosed and was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 40,000 and the current mileage was 156,000.

Vehicle's idle stuck at 2500 rpm's, making it difficult to brake. Other times vehicle's rpm's are so low the vehicle stalls. When they are too high the only correction is to engage the clutch and turn the vehicle off. Chevy dealers can't duplicate the problem, so they do nothing. The problem is intermittent.

Gas pedal assembly coming loose from 2004 chevy cavalier with 70k miles. No part available in the us. Gm stopped making this assembly. This happened at freeway speeds. Gm will not help me.

While shifting out of gear and stopping, the car on its own it revved up to 5000 rpms.at first i thought the acclerator was stuck and attempted to lift it up with my foot, and found out that was not it.about 15 seconds later it stopped on its own.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that the vehicle was parked when he heard a loud "shattering" noise. He went over and noticed that the rear window had shattered into pieces. The dealer was notified and stated that the heat must have caused the failure and since the vehicle was no longer under warranty, they could offer no assistance. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The failure and current mileages were approximately 199,000.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that the front driver and passenger side windows could only be closed partially. The rear driver and passenger windows could not be opened or closed. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who located the failure at the door motor and regulator. The motors and the regulators would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 83,000 and the current mileage was 90,000.

I have a 2004 cavalier. Shortly after i bought it the drivers window stopped working. I had a warranty and replaced it. It stopped working without any warning. When i got the car back i could hear air coming through the window, but didn't see any gaps. Eventually noticed the window was off track. My guess is poor fixing by the dealership. About 2 years later (my warranty is up) the drivers window quit working again. I had to drive in the pouring rain with my window down. We have had so much rain the roads are flooding thus sending tons of water into my car by passing cars. From what i have read online this is obviously a problem for many people. Gm needs to issue a recall and fix the problem, instead of making the customers pay.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier.the vehicle defrosters do not work.the defrosters only blow out onto thedashboard, and not the windshield.the failure causes dangerous driving during winter weather.he has called the dealer regarding the failure, but has gotten no response.he has not taken the vehicle to get inspected by a mechanic.the failure mileage was 46,000 and current mileage is 49,000.updated 4/29/08

It has been in the shop several times since it was bought for the exact same thing.the front window defrost will not blow air in order to defrost the window. This causes very dangerous conditions while driving.the dealer does not want to fix it with out approval of a lot of hours for labor and taking apart a large portion of the front end.which most people can not afford all at one time.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier.while driving approximately 15 mph on normal road conditions, the front driver's side window mechanism would not activate.the contact was unable to release the window in a downward position.the failure occurred without warning.the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer four times and they repaired it under the warranty.recently, the front passenger side window mechanism failed.the repair would cost $590.the vehicle has not been repaired.the contact was concerned of the safety risk involved. The failure mileage was 18,000 and current mileage was 60,000.updated 11/24/08the window motor and regulator has been replaced 5 times. Updated 11/26/08.

I discovered at 1500 miles my 2004 cavalier ls had a leak apparent in the roof liner.took it to the dealer and turns out the rear back window seal was not properly installed and was crimped upon installation at the factory.the problem was repaired under warranty by gm and was fixed to my satisfaction.

The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that he experienced a recurring failure in which the motor in the drivers side front window stopped functioning. The failureoccurred four times and each time the vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the window motor was replaced.the contact stated that when the motors were replaced they were covered with rust. The failure mileage was 9,000 and the current mileage was 92,000.

Dt*:the contact stated the driver side window does not operate.the dealership made repairs twice; the motor and regulator have been replaced.however, the problem has returned.the consumer stated the window is inoperative again. Updated 04/11/06

The second window motor is failing and needs replacement.the first to fail was the back passenger side, which of course was rarely ever used.now the front driver's side window will often times not close and after waiting some time, it goes up bit by bit.very soon it is going to quit working altogether.the part alone is almost $250.

Power window does not work.

Dt*: the contact stated the front left and right rear power windows were failing.the service dealer refused to close the window without charging for the service.the manufacturer was notified.

On intermittent setting, windshield wipers only move across windshield in spurts, stoping every second.works normally on high settings.on previous repair, wiper linkages failed resulting in one wiper remaining parked at all times.

Recall 03v159000 concerning windshield wiper motor.windshieldwipers stopped operating during inclement conditions.dealer was notified, and informedconsumer that this vehicle was not covered under that recall due to vin.the dealer could not duplicate the problem.*tc

While driving, the right side rear view mirror would shake uncontrollably.please provide additional details.

Drivers side wiper arm nut came loose causingwipers not to work at all.wile wife was backing car up in driveway to return to our house (due to wipers not working)she hit a tree causing rear quater and rear bumper cover damage

Dt: the contact owns a 2004 chevroletcavalier. The windshield wiper motor and circuit board malfunctioned.neither chevrolet nor the dealership could understandwhy the dealer where she had the extended warranty will not correct the problem. The vehicle only has 39,000 miles on .the windshield wipers only worked intermittently.gm told her to contact nhtsa because there was no open recall. This problem has graduallyworse. The vehicle will remainin the repair shop right until it will be fixed.
