The contact owns a 1997 chevrolet cavalier.the contact was sitting at a traffic stop when her foot slipped off the brake and caused her to lightly crash into the rear of a preceding vehicle. The contact stated there was no damage to either vehicle but the air bags deployed erroneously, causing burns to the contact's hands and face. The contact inquired with the manufacturer regarding nhtsa campaign id number: 98v146000 (air bags) that was supposed to correct the calibration that would have prevented the air bag deployment. The manufacturer advised that the vehicle was repaired previously under the recall, but the repair failed. The failure and the current mileages were 98,000. The vin was not available.

Shortly after the vehicle was involved in auto accident while parked stationary in a parking lot.the chevrolet cavalier failed the enhanced state inspection thence after due to air bag safety feature. The car is in fair condition appraised above blue book value and mechanically runs better than it did 4 or 5 years ago. There is a salvage title currently on the motor vehicle. All the vehicle needs is new air bags.

The airbags on the vehicle in questions were supposed to be repaired due to a recall. They instead deployed under 5 m.p.h. When the car ahead was bumped. The only damage to either car was the damage caused by the airbag. It shattered the windshield and jammed the moon roof open. The airbag also slightly injured the driver ( scraping & bruising her chin ). Chevrolet initially provided kristen with a cost free rental car and promised to fix the vehicle. Overnight their position changed. They took back the rental car and have been " bouncing " the claim from department to department causing the car to be untouched for more than 9 days now. The car was purchased at voss but now sits in smedley's chevrolet's - vandalia, ohio - lot.

While driving at 55mph the passenger side airbag deployed. When the airbag deployed it ripped apart the dash and busted the windshield. Luckily my son was not injured and managed to keep the car under control to get it off the highway without having an accident. When gm was contacted they said sorry this car was not affected by the recall for the airbags.

He believes the manufacturer should pay to have them replaced.the consumer sold this vehicle to his grandson who was involved in the accident. The consumer wrote in on behalf ofhis grandson. The consumer learned a recall had been issued for the same problem that his grandson experienced.

Dtrecall 00v053000was issued concerningthe fuel system. This vehicle was not included due to vin.gasoline was leaking fromthe return and the feed line. The return line started leaking first and thena month later, the feed line started leaking. Noticedit on july 29, 2005 this is when the return metal fitting was leaking and the returnstarted leakingon august 29, 2005. Contacted the dealer, the part that has to be replaced, includingthe whole unit, and with labor would cost$600.00 or $700.00. Also, ignition switchrecall 02v070000. This vehicle failed to start.the vehicle would not turn over it completely. The dash warning lights would come on. The dealer has not looked at any of these problems.there wasalso a recall98v146000 concerning air bags.vehicle'sair bag light was on.did not havethe dealer check this.

I have had this problem for two years.i had it fixed on 08/10/1998.i received the recall for the calibration in the air bags computer in oct 98.i took my car to bay chevrolet (6970 n. Military hwy. Norfolk, va 23518)(757-855-2261) on 08/22/1998.the mileage at this time was 31,491.they reprogrammed the air bag sdm and replaced the horn assembly.the vehicle was still under warranty at this time.i called them back in nov 99 when problem was reoccurring.vehicle was no longer under warranty and to have it fixed would have cost me $600+ dollars.i feel it should be fixed for free, since problem keeps reoccurring.problem is still not fixed at this time.

Vehicle's air bags malfunctioned on two occasions, one incident during collision no deployment of air bag and the other incident false deployment of air bag which damaged vehicle.

My 1987 chevy cavaliar shut off in the middle of driving multiple times. The first time i heard clicking in the cluster and the theft system light turns on and my fuel pump shuts down. I have been in very critical places while this situation takes place. The theft system has shut my vehichle off on the highway, in the intersection ect.. I have tryed to reset this system numerous times. I have come to the knowledge that this is a serious problem with many chevy cavaliars and other gmmodels. This should be a recall and should be fixed. I, a loyal gm customer,should not have to drive a unpredictable vehichle that has security problems that are due to the original making of the system. I have no money to pay for this and am stuck with this problem. It is very unsafe.

Windshield wiper motor stopped working. This caused the wipers to stop & obstructed driver's visibility. Also, the ets light stays on/cd player shorts out/driver's door locks do not release. Been to dealer 7 different times.

The first incident that occur was in 2009. It was that the switch of the key engine did not want to start. Someone came to fix it but could not find a way to repair it. He had to add a button under the steering wheel and i would be tuning the key to the engine to start i would have to push that button to start the car. I would have to be replacing light bulbs constancy from the rear back of the single light. The theft lock system would be turning it self on while i would be driving. Thankfullythere was accident because of that. But i would be struggling to start my car .i had to wait some couple of minutes to start the car. The recent incident that occur was when my neighbor heard like some fireworks in our side of our house. He took a look and he seen that our carwas some sparkling lights out of the steering wheel. That was around midnight what he seen andhe told us that morning. As i walk towards the car i could smell smoke as if something burn. I wanted to start my car but wouldn'tstart. Some one came to fixed it and had to replace some cable from the steering wheel becausethat was that cause the sparking of the fire.

As i was going to turn the switch on to turn on my car it didn't want to start. I had some one fix it but could not find a way to fix it. They had to add a button under the steering wheel to start the car as i turn the switch on. There was couple a of times where the car would go on passlock by itself and wouldn't start until a long period ofwaiting. The external headlights burn constantly and i would buy new bulbs for the back lights. One time our neighbor said he heard noise like fireworks on our property and he said that he seen our car was sparking light out of the steering wheel. That morning of that day he told us and as we were checking the car i could smell something burned. As a result of that the car didn't want to start . The auto repair people had to come to our house to figure out what was wrong with it. They had told me that some wires inside the steering wheel had burned but mostly i have been fixing more of electrical switches and burned wires. My rear defrost quit working and i went and checked some of the connections.the connection under the dash had been melted, with the plastic showing evidence of being melted.i have done some checking on the internet and it appears it is a problem.if you check gm cars pontiac, and gm some of the vehicles have had this issue.it appears to be very common based off the forums and you tube video's.it appears in impala, cavalier, sunfire, and this isn't an all inclusive list.this is concerning because it appears to have been a problem for a few years and gm allowed this to happen.

The engine overheated, and stalled.the spark plugs melted.the technician found the head warped, causing excessive internal exhaust heat.the dealer replaced the relay switch, removed the head and resurfaced.the electric fans don't turn on.the technician found the fan relay, ect sensor, and fusible link shorted(removed replaced).the vehicle had surged and died out.the sensor connector clip broken and was replaced.the console under the radio had cracked.the vehicle wouldn't start, due to multiple dtc plugs fouled.the vacuum line had broken, and the connectors were re-pinned.the vehicle wouldn't start until the engine cooled down.the alternator was not charging and there was poor battery contact to the terminal.the alternator was replaced.between the speeds of 25-30 mph, the vehicle felt like it was going to rev up.the transmission did not shift into gear.the transmission was replaced and the cooler lines were flushed.there was noise coming from the engine and or the defective timing chain.the tensioner was replaced/resealed, the timing chain was greased, and the serpentine belt was replaced.scc

I bought this car used last year for my daughter.we have been having problems with the key to start, the key was left in the start position a few times trying to get started.we noticed a spark come from the column and nothing.i noticed that there was a recall on the ignition switch doing the same thing as i stated above. Dealership will not honor recall because now they are stating the lock cylinder mechanism is broke and they cant get into the column without breaking it.this is ridiculous that now that it is failed they won't fix the car.

1997 chevy cavalier steering column and dashboard caught on fire on march 10, 2011.car had no mechanical or electrical issues prior to the fire.car was in excellent working condition.car had been parked for approximately one hour after being used for a short drive.the cavalier was parked outside in front of the house no one was in the vehicle.fire department had to be called to extinguish the fire from the car.no prior knowledge of the recall for the electrical system ignition switch defect.

The safety device light came on. It won't go off, can't start my car.

My horn suddenly went off and stuck for no reason when i got in my car (before i even started it). I had someone disconnect the wiring for the horn and that person told me he could smell something coming from the air bag. I brought it to the dealership where i bought it and was told that it was most likely an electrical problem and had nothing to do with the horn. I would like to know what my rights are and what i can do so this can be fixed. I do not have much money as i just became laid off so i can use any kind of help. Thank you in advance for any help!

Consumer took vehicle in for recall 02v07, however was charged 800 dollars for a new battery, consumer states that this seems awfully high. The vehicle stalled due to a minor engine problem.the valve cover gasket and the arching spark plugs were replaced.*sc

Have had many problems with car - at 20,000 - the dealer replaced the front brakes and machined rotors, after i requested they be checked due to squeaking.service covered under warranty.at 30,000 - the battery failed on car while parked.had car towed to dealership and replaced battery.dealer stated that there was a faulty battery cell.service covered under warranty.at 40,000 miles, horn has failed.currently negotiating with dealer to replace without cost.have always had abs problems - car will buck and jerk under certain wet pavement conditions when abs should not activate.concerned about this - but cannot afford cost of replacing abs.dealer has looked at brakes and said nothing about abs problems.have banging/clanging noise from right rear of car when car is cold.unsure what causes this.after reading the consumer complaints and defects on this website, believe that my car has these same defects.frightened that my car is now incredibly unreliable and may catch fire like other cars listed.suggestions?

The original delco battery leaked acid from the positive side terminal.this is a risk for a chemical burn and corrosion to the chassis.this is my third new gm car that had the original delco battery leak out the side positive terminal.i believe this is a problem with factory original delco batteries.the first time was with a 91 cadillac sedan deville, the second was with a 93 chevrolet silverado 3500 dually truck.i believe delco batteries have a serious design flaw that is ongoing.gm delco does not appear to have fixed the design flaw. These three batteries leaked when they were three years old.i sold the 91 cadillac and bought a 99 cadillac.i don't trust the battery and plan to pull the battery at 24 months before it leaks acid.i will never buy a delco replacement.i still have the cavilier battery sitting in a puddle of acid in the garage.let me know if you need a picture or if somebody needs to see it.

On july 5th of this year my car started making a strange nose when starting it. I took the car to my local chevrolet dealer so that the and let them listen to the noise and narrow down the problem as to what might be the problem.the said that it sounded like either the flywheel or the starter, i then took the car to my menachic and he told me the same thing, i was going to take the car to him as some as i could be without my car and he told me not to start the car any more that necessary.before i could find time to take the car to the shop whatever the problem was compleately failed and i had to have my car towed to the shop.this car should not have started problems because even though it has 46,000 miles the majority of those miles are highway miles which dose not require much starting of the car.i think that there is a major defect in my cars started system that should have not of occured to a car this new.when i bought this car it was mainly for the reputation of the cavalier as a relibale car that would last me for many years.

Have put 3 alternators on this car, even when under warrantybefore 12,000 miles (approximately).brakes have been replaced at least 3 times.now, the brakes have failed completely and the abs light came on.dealer says no recalls, except for the ignition system.scheduled that for repair 7/23/02.seat belt plastic covers snapped off (belt loose on one and hit by car door when shutting it.the other one just popped off.belt continues to slip off engine, causes stalling even if driving 55 mph.now brakes intermittently failing.left front brake continues to have brake dust accumulate on wheel cover.car has 110,000 miles on it (engine repaired last year).car is also overheating; has had tstat replaced, radiator fluid.what else could cause this, i don't know.

After receiving the notice in the mail concerning the recall i contacted my dealer andean chevrolet, only to be told that the replacement parts were on "national back order"and to not even bring in my car that there was nothing that they or anyone else could do.i then asked what should happen if i'm driving down the road and my car should really start on fire.the reply i received was "that very rarely happens, and to call back in 3-4 weeks."two days later i started having trouble starting my car.when i tried starting it and it didn't i continued to try to start it finally only to end up getting a machanics help.this continued for several days and even being stranded in a very secluuded area because of this ignition problem.i even ended up replacing the battery due to trying to start the car.missing work and being late resulting in loosing the placement.|what do i do about this and whom do i hold responsible for other situations resulting in this recall that unable to be fixed at this time?

Spark splug failed causing engine problems.

My car was parked all day at work.after work i drove down two blocks to a store where i needed to run in to pick something up.i returned to my car 10 mins later and my car would not start.dash lights were functional, but car would not turn over.initially it sounded like it was trying to turn over but did not have enough power to do so.after attempting to start several times, it no longer made any sound when i turned the key. Tried to jumpstart car, but car would not take it.checked all fuses, seemed to be fine.does not appear to be the battery, as all lights and car alarm work.this problem came without any warning signs, with the occasion of a few times in the past where the car stalled out.no warning signs/problems prior to this current problem.taking car in for a diagnostic test 09/01/02.

My car has not started 4 times. I keep it mantained as schedualed. I have taken it to the dealership i brought it from, but they have charged me to much money and always tell me nothing is wrong. If someone jumps my car it works fine, but i have to jumpstart it in order to get it running again. What could be wrong?

The cylinder lock has been replaced four times. The vehicle is in the on position. The key is stuck.consumer had to let the vehicle run until it shut itself off, meaning it had to run out of gas. It will not let the consumer release the key from the ignition.

I have called this morning (12/06/00) to nhtsa, you said you will send me a form to fill out.but then i got into this website.so i would like to file and document asap becasue i feel very unsafe while driving.i am sure my vehicle has a defect or problem which could cause an accident or injury or death to myself and others.the problem first appeared in early july/00: soon after starting the car, warning lights (oil pressure and charging system) lit up and the car stalled and lost power.power brake was gone, and i was heading down a steep slope!luckily i managed to stop the car without causing an accident.i can restart the car and drive on.it happened 2 times more and i took it to the dealer to check.it cannot repeat the condition, so nothing was done.for the next short while nothing like that happened, although several times 2 other warning lamps will lit up (enhanced traction system off and malfunction indicator).i called the dealer to make an appointment but the lights will go off, and i cancelled the appointment...on the night of 11/28/00, the same dangerous situation occurred again.since the dealership was not immediately available, i took it to a mechanic who ran a computer test on my car, and found taht faulty code #704 had occurred intermittently in my transmision system.but again, the mechanic cannot duplicate the condition, so cannot fix anything.i called gm's customer assistance and the dealer to see what i can do.the advice is that there is no similar incidents reported.and i just have to wait for the condition to happen again somehow.but the dilemma is that even if the stalling happens, the car can restart, then the condition will not exist and even if i bring/tow it to the dealer, they won't know what to fix!!so i have no recourse to take except to drive the car around with this danger on my mind all the time!there must be a better way to have the car fixed or the matter resolved, i would think/hope?thankyou.

If the engine fails to start and the driver holds the key in the "start" position for an extended period, high current flows through the ignition switch, and sometimes produces enough heat to melt internal switch parts. On may 29 1998 my cars ets/ engine check light came on, and i took it to a chevrolet dealer to find out what the problem was. They told me that it was the number 2engine cylinder misfiring, and they tried to fix the problem. Within the next few days i was back for the same problem. This time the called the technical assistant for help, and they did this another time as they did not fix the problem.i then move to ft. Polk la. As i am in the military. On 1 jan 9, the same problem started up again. This time they did the same thing the other shop did.i have had my car in the shop for a total of 4 times that they have worked on it, replacing the cylinder cap/fuel injector and coil housing. And they talked to the technical assistantce personnel at chevrolet.the last time i had my car in the shop was 29jan 99, and they hooked a computer up to it. Drove it for a week to try to creat the problem so they could take a picture of the system.but the lights never came on. So they gave me back my car with the problem still not fixed, and the chevrolet corp. Won't do any thing about the problem, but continue to work on it under the warranty.i have been told that they can't fix the problem, and the technical assistants are out of suggestions.i have filed a complaint with the chevrolet corp, and feel that nothing will be done about my problem.i feel that they have had several attempts to fix the problem and can't , and they won't replace the car.

Passlock/theftlock system enables with known key in system preventing the vehicle from starting or shutting down while driving disabling power steering and brake systems. A google search indicates this is a very common problem in all gm vehicles equipped with this system. Gm's attitude is lackadaisical toward this issue at best. Dealers will not disable system and after hundreds of dollars are spent on fixing the problem, it still exists.

Consumer had a computer chip replaced 2 months ago because the vehicle would not start, dealer believes it's something electrical but is unable to find the problem and had to send a part away to be serviced.. *et

My car has recently caught fire.the fire started in the steering column.my car was a total loss.

My ignition switch recall is a problem and the recall notice says that the internal parts os the switch will melt if held too long in the start position and i have had a problem with my switch. I took it off and apart and found that the internal parts were melted as it says in the notice. My notice says that they were to test and replace the switch if necessary as well as put the addition to the circuit and i did not get a new switch please advise as what to do. On thursday, may 31, 2001, the vehicle ailed to start and was jump started. We then drove home (5 mins' drive away) and parked the vehcle in our carport. About 5 mins later a neighbor came to tell us that the vehicle was on fire. The fire originated in the steering wheel column (probably due to a problem with the ignition) and destroyed the ignition, wiper switch, turn signal switch and the covers. Additional damage was done while trying to put out the fire. The fire brigade was called to the scene. The incident could have been much more serious if the fire had not been spotted so quickly.

The return line started leaking first and thena month later, the feed line started leaking. Noticedit on july 29, 2005 this is when the return metal fitting was leaking and the returnstarted leakingon august 29, 2005. Contacted the dealer, the part that has to be replaced, includingthe whole unit, and with labor would cost$600.00 or $700.00. Also, ignition switchrecall 02v070000. This vehicle failed to start.the vehicle would not turn over it completely. The dash warning lights would come on. The dealer has not looked at any of these problems.there wasalso a recall98v146000 concerning air bags.vehicle'sair bag light was on.did not havethe dealer check this.

While backing up consumer noticed smoke coming from ignition switch. Then, flames. He shut off engine, and fire went out. Consumer called chevrolet customer service about the recall on ignition, it has not been determined if this vehicle was affected by recall.

Front brake pads/rotor wore out, causing vibration when brakesare applied. Also dealer replaced engine mounts/ignition switch. Brake line was found rubbing against axle shaft and was fixed. In addition, front end shakes/vibrates.

I have had a total of 5 starters on my car within 2 years.i know this is just crazy because i don't know of anybody's car that has went through that many in 2 years.now that i have that problem solved i have to deal with this recall.

Arson investigator said it was caused by an electrical short in the steering column area. I spoke to several representatives at gm and finaly received a letter in the mail which states that " general motors is unable to assume responsibilityfor any damages.""investigation revealed no evidence to support the product allegation". This incident has actually hurt my family financially and emotionally. My daughter thinks that we need to keep trading in cars before they blow up. Vehicle was underextended warranty when it caught on fire.engine light illuminated, dealer had replaced the oil pump, solenoid, and exhaust however light still illuminated.battery light illuminated.windshield wiper skips and chatters across windshield, dealer replaced blade.trunk would not open from inside lever, compartment lid release broke.clicking noise was heard when turning steering wheel, dealer could not find problem.

Whenever consumer has to use headlights he may experience some type of failure.consumer took vehicle in to dealer to be repaired.they fixed the headlights,but then the park lights failed, day time running lights failed and this happened in spells,one or the other.

Electrical wires had blown under the dash board. Consumer would like to know is it related to the electrical recall. Warning lights on since purchase of vehicle.it took three trips to dealer before dealer found short under dash.a few weeks later vehicle had to be jump started.received recall notice for electrical ignition.when air conditioner was serviced, mechanic found circuits supplying power to the compressor had blown.mechanic traced wires under dash and found wires had melted and shortened out.he repaired what he could and the air conditioner was worked.howeverto correct the wiring problem the entire dash needed to be removed and new harness installed.consumer is concerned the electrical/ignition recall is related to electrical problems.

Dt: the dash area ofthe vehicle caught on fire, it started around the ignition switch. They do have a recall not sure if it includesthis vehicle. The vehicle started without the keys in the ignition after turning it off, and that was when it caught on fire. This happened on july 6, 2005. The fire departmentand insurance company came out and inspectedvehicle.

The safety device light came on. It won't go off, can't start my car.

I was driving around 30 mph to a stop sign and my car died while in drive, approaching a stop sign. The incident happened again in may 2010 when i was driving home and had to coast down a bridge, which prompted me to sell the car because i felt it was unsafe to drive anymore.

As i was going to turn the switch on to turn on my car it didn't want to start. I had some one fix it but could not find a way to fix it. They had to add a button under the steering wheel to start the car as i turn the switch on. There was couple a of times where the car would go on passlock by itself and wouldn't start until a long period ofwaiting. The external headlights burn constantly and i would buy new bulbs for the back lights. One time our neighbor said he heard noise like fireworks on our property and he said that he seen our car was sparking light out of the steering wheel. That morning of that day he told us and as we were checking the car i could smell something burned. As a result of that the car didn't want to start . The auto repair people had to come to our house to figure out what was wrong with it. They had told me that some wires inside the steering wheel had burned but mostly i have been fixing more of electrical switches and burned wires. Car radiator fan won't kick on cause car to get very dangerously hot causing car to become a bomb

The first incident that occur was in 2009. It was that the switch of the key engine did not want to start. Someone came to fix it but could not find a way to repair it. He had to add a button under the steering wheel and i would be tuning the key to the engine to start i would have to push that button to start the car. I would have to be replacing light bulbs constancy from the rear back of the single light. The theft lock system would be turning it self on while i would be driving. Thankfullythere was accident because of that. But i would be struggling to start my car .i had to wait some couple of minutes to start the car. The recent incident that occur was when my neighbor heard like some fireworks in our side of our house. He took a look and he seen that our carwas some sparkling lights out of the steering wheel. That was around midnight what he seen andhe told us that morning. As i walk towards the car i could smell smoke as if something burn. I wanted to start my car but wouldn'tstart. Some one came to fixed it and had to replace some cable from the steering wheel becausethat was that cause the sparking of the fire.

I have a 1997 cavalier (the warrenty began in feb. '97).just recently found out i need the head gasket replaced at a cost of approximately $1200.noticed that many other owners have had the same problem, although in 96's.my car has 70,000 miles on it, and from what i've learned, a head gasket should last about 10 years of 100,000 miles.i would like chevy to get involved and pay for this, since it obviously seems to be such a problem with cavaliers.

The engine overheated, and stalled.the spark plugs melted.the technician found the head warped, causing excessive internal exhaust heat.the dealer replaced the relay switch, removed the head and resurfaced.the electric fans don't turn on.the technician found the fan relay, ect sensor, and fusible link shorted(removed replaced).the vehicle had surged and died out.the sensor connector clip broken and was replaced.the console under the radio had cracked.the vehicle wouldn't start, due to multiple dtc plugs fouled.the vacuum line had broken, and the connectors were re-pinned.the vehicle wouldn't start until the engine cooled down.the alternator was not charging and there was poor battery contact to the terminal.the alternator was replaced.between the speeds of 25-30 mph, the vehicle felt like it was going to rev up.the transmission did not shift into gear.the transmission was replaced and the cooler lines were flushed.there was noise coming from the engine and or the defective timing chain.the tensioner was replaced/resealed, the timing chain was greased, and the serpentine belt was replaced.scc

I just got a used chevy cavalier a 97 model and it over heats constantly and there is a pop an sparks whenstarting the car and the lights won't turn off and now there iswobbling in the passenger sidewheel and white smokecoming out the back . I only had it for maybe two days now and the fan to the motor won't come on now and i took it back to the car lot where i bought it from they have replaces the thermostat( airconditioner thing ) but it' still over heats .. And then i look in my book , and it gives a web site and there is all these recalls andthe guy tells me when i call that the thingsgoing on with my car are not in the recall list accept for the somethingto do with speed but if that is the case why is the lights notcutting off and the car doing all these things .. I had a person look at it who works on cars and they told me that the spark is on the fuel injection side of the motor and i was lucky i didn'tgo up inflames .. Is there any help infixing this car since these are defects ?

I have a 1997 chevrolet cavalier that right after purchase (1998) the engine needed replacement. The dealer as per the service contract did this. Skip ahead to now (2003), the car developed a coolant leak. It was looked at and tested by my local mechanic and was diagnosed as a bad head gasket. I called the dealer that replaced the engine and was told that the entire engine was replaced. I asked about them fixing the head gasket, as it should not be leaking (the engine has 38,000 miles on it) they said no. I called gm customer service, they said i would have to have it diagnosed by a gm dealer at the cost of $79.95. This was done, the dealer said it was a bad gasket and/or cracked head. Gm customer service said that since the car was out of warranty and that only a short block was installed they would do nothing about it. My complaint is this; i've been lied to by my local dealer. The cavalier has this known defect. Gm has done nothing to tell me about it, but they have issued a technical service bulletin about it to the dealers. And now they won't repair the vehicle, not will they offer to pay any portion of it's repair. I would like any and all help in forcing gm to fix this. *nlm

In december 1999, i experienced a loss of engine coolant level and the low engine coolant indicator illuminated on the instrument panel.i assumed the thermostat was failing and had a local service station replace it and flush the radiator.several days later the low engine coolant light illuminated on the instrument panel.upon inspection, i had lost some coolant and experienced the smell of hot coolant which i attributed to the recent radiator flush.i took it back to the service station and the coolant system was pressure tested to check for leaks and passed.after being idle for over 1 week, on january 3, 2000, i checked the engine coolant level and it was low.i filled the engine coolant reservior to full and after short trips the level had held at full.on january 4, 2000, while driving to work, i experienced a rough idle and in addition to the low engine coolant level illuminating on the instrument panel, the check engine light and the traction control lights also lit up on the dash.i took it to the dealer, hawthorne chevrolet, expecting to have them finally resolve my problem and they informed me they suspected my engine block was cracked and estimated the job at over $3400.00.i noteiced service bulletin #'s 67-62-04, 970501776109 & 970501738309 posted on your website refers to similar defects as those i have experienced.if the engine has a defect, what recourse do i have?i have followed the recommended maintainance schedule and feel frustrated that gm and hawthorne chevrolet knew of the potential problems but failed to take the preventative measures to avoid perminant damage to the engine.i have taken the car to the service station where i had the thermostat replaced and their conclusion is the head gasget has failed or the head has cracked, based on the fact that there isn't any coolant in the oil pan. I received an estimate of $950.00 for the repairs.i'm not a happy cavalier owner.i thank you.

My concern is the car is only 3 yrs old and we are continueing to have problems occur, the cigarette lighter has a short in it as well.

Car returned to dealer every three to six months for the last 3 years for the same problem involving overheating and coolant leaks.problem continually reoccurs, even after it has been deemed finally repaired.

My car had started overheating really bad, and was going through coolant like crazy.so i called the dealership where i bought it and they charged way to much.so i took it to a radiator shop and had it looked at.they replaced the water pump and some hoses,and it still acted up.so i finally bought a whole new coolant tank, and yet still it continued to do the same thing.so i took it to firestone to have a coolant pressure test done.they told me that the head gasket had a leak in the front corner.they estimated it at costing about $800to fix the head gasket.but then i took it upon myself to go buy a new cap for the coolant tank and i haven't had a problem with it overheating on me.that cap only cost me like $10. What concerns me is that the pressure cap that was originally on the car wasa 15 psi cap and the new one i bought from the dealer was an 18 psi.they told me they changed the part for my car.i would like to know why i wasn't notified of this.that could have been the whole problem behind my car overheating.*lt

We have had problems with this car from the date that it was purchased.the brake rotor problems have been worked on several times, and it will stop for a while, but will continue to worsen with time.the abs light and low coolant light have been on and off for over and year and we were told that we would have to pay to have them fixed, the sound from the exhaust, possibly the catalytic converter, has been going on for over a year and again, we were told we needed to replace it, that it was not covered under warranty.then engine is sounding more awful as time goes on...lots of noise under the hood especially at crusing speed, and then again when slowing to a stop, and more recently even when idling.not only was this car not serviced properly when i would bring it in with a complaint, but i feel as if the dealers were purposely putting me off just so the warranty would run out and i would have to fix these problems myself.obviously i am not the only on that has had similiar problems.and also, the car has been leaking antifreeze for a number of months, but cant seem to find the leak.definitely can smell the burning antifreeze, especially after an extended trip.

The temperature gauge in car rises to very hot. There is no steam or anything coming from car, but you must still stop on the highway and wait for the gauge to read cool before you can continue on. This also happens if you are on a line for any amount of time. Because of this problem i own a car that i drive only around the neighborhood.

Have put 3 alternators on this car, even when under warrantybefore 12,000 miles (approximately).brakes have been replaced at least 3 times.now, the brakes have failed completely and the abs light came on.dealer says no recalls, except for the ignition system.scheduled that for repair 7/23/02.seat belt plastic covers snapped off (belt loose on one and hit by car door when shutting it.the other one just popped off.belt continues to slip off engine, causes stalling even if driving 55 mph.now brakes intermittently failing.left front brake continues to have brake dust accumulate on wheel cover.car has 110,000 miles on it (engine repaired last year).car is also overheating; has had tstat replaced, radiator fluid.what else could cause this, i don't know.

For those of you with problems with your engine coolant, i finally got mine fixed.after telling me it was the temperature sensor and the thermostat it ended up being a crack in the radiator cap, something that costs $10.a good way to prevent engine shutdown is to turn your vent fan to hot air, as hot as u can get it.that will bring down the tempature reading, everytime.something to look for when your stuck in traffic alot, thats when it happens when you idle to long.

While driving vehiclewill stall intermittently, speed is approximately 35-70 mph.no indication as to when the vehicle will cut off.dealer and manufacturer cannot duplicate the problem.

Front brake pads/rotor wore out, causing vibration when brakesare applied. Also dealer replaced engine mounts/ignition switch. Brake line was found rubbing against axle shaft and was fixed. In addition, front end shakes/vibrates.

Mechanic at dealership said that they had received letters that this was occuring on these vehicles due to small hole for oil to chain clogging but i had no recalls or warnings of this.this car has relatively few miles on it and at the time this happened, i had just stopped to turn into a parking lot.there could have been a serious accident if it had happened during the turn or if i had been driving down the road as the car lost power immediately.if the dealerships are receiving letters, why aren't the owners.i realize that there can be failure of this part, but if the failure is due to the clogging of the area that keeps the chain oiled, then this is a defect in the car not the wear of the part.

I have a 1997 chevrolet cavalier. It only hadless then eighty five thousand miles on it and the engine blew up .i was told the reason why was because it had a defective rod in it. I have all the parts ect you can see there's a defect in the metal it goes all the way threw the rod.i find it hard to believe that such a new car would blow up . I took very good care of that car i had to fix some things the chevrolet dealership is a joke out here they are worthless thy mistreated me too. Defect 1:abs light would come on when making a left hand turn.abs would no longer activate while light was on.defect 2:alternator--went out while driving in city traffic, rush hour.had previously asked dealer to check, but they claimed it was functioning properly.defect 3:rack and pinion steering assembly--went out shortly after alternator, while driving in the dealership parking lot.defect 4:timing chain tensioner--technician said this caused major engine damage--gears, head, etc. Defect 5:horn--has worked sporadically, at best, for the last year and a half.seemed like a short.

Cracks in crank sensor.

On may 29 1998 my cars ets/ engine check light came on, and i took it to a chevrolet dealer to find out what the problem was. They told me that it was the number 2engine cylinder misfiring, and they tried to fix the problem. Within the next few days i was back for the same problem. This time the called the technical assistant for help, and they did this another time as they did not fix the problem.i then move to ft. Polk la. As i am in the military. On 1 jan 9, the same problem started up again. This time they did the same thing the other shop did.i have had my car in the shop for a total of 4 times that they have worked on it, replacing the cylinder cap/fuel injector and coil housing. And they talked to the technical assistantce personnel at chevrolet.the last time i had my car in the shop was 29jan 99, and they hooked a computer up to it. Drove it for a week to try to creat the problem so they could take a picture of the system.but the lights never came on. So they gave me back my car with the problem still not fixed, and the chevrolet corp. Won't do any thing about the problem, but continue to work on it under the warranty.i have been told that they can't fix the problem, and the technical assistants are out of suggestions.i have filed a complaint with the chevrolet corp, and feel that nothing will be done about my problem.i feel that they have had several attempts to fix the problem and can't , and they won't replace the car.

I noticed that my 1997 chevrolet cavalier had been leaking coolant, when i proceeded to find the leak i was unsucessful. Many other complaints on your website have proven to have the same problem. The leak appears to be around the front head gasket. It could possibly have a cracked head. This sounds like a logical explanation due to the violent vibration from the engine, white smoke from the tail pipe and overheating.the coolant must be leaking into the fuel mixture at the head. The car is at an undriveable state. Dealerships which i have contacted told me about recalls of a similar nature for the 1995 and 1996 cavalier models. Why hasn't there been a recall on the 1997 model? thank you.

The engine has stalled multiple times while driving.the dealer has been unable to identify or rectify the problem.the power steering and brakes become difficult to operate when the vehicle stalls, and because it seems to occur randomly may lead to substantial injury if the vehicle stalls while in traffic.

Vehicle will stall while idling and without warning , dealer has replaced throttle positioning center, and reprogrammed pcm, but defect still occurring, and causing safety hazard.

When ever the car is started there is a bad knocking/ticking sound as if your car was low on oil...and even when the oil is changed and/or checked and the oil level is fine...the problem still occurs...i have notified the dealer more than 20 times about this problem(while under warranty) and they could not find what was causing the problem..their (chevy's)engineer was even in town at one time and they had to bring it in then and he/she could not even figure out what was causing the problem....if he can't figure out what the problem is..then i think they need to investigate further and pull the engine completely down there could be a serious problem that could cause the engine to have to be replaced and want the owner to cover the charges when it is not even the owners fault...can you please let me know what i need to do to get a recall done on all the cavaliers that have this problem.

About 1-2 months ago my wife tried to start the car and she said that all of the systems(i.e. Windshieldwiper blades,interior warning lights, etc.) started going off all at once, the brake pedal would't push in, there was a loud buxxing noise, and the car would not start.ever since we have had to try several times before the vehicle would start and there have been multiple occasions when we are driving along (speed doesn't seem to play a role) and the car will react in a similar manner and stop running.after this happens, it can take us up to 10-15 minutes to get it started again.just this morning it happened again and if the truck behind us had not swerved as it did, it would have totalled our car.we then spent almost 20 minutes in the middle of traffic trying to start our car.(this was submitted by brian quinney - husband of said owner).

My mother has a 1997 cavalier which she bought used. Since she has had the vehicle there has been two recalls and upon further investigation on my part i found on your site 5 more totaling 7 in all. She bought the car in august of 2001. When the car reached 109,000 the oil pump went out and she had to spend 3,000 dollars to get another engine put in,and she don't even have the car paid off. With these newer cars 109,000 is nothing and even in the older vehicles i have never had an oil pump go out with that little bit of miles on the engine. I have friends who are mechanics that i have talked to and they have told me that they have had a lot of these particular engines being the 2.2 liter with bad oil pumps in them. This is the reason i am filing this complaint for my mother. My brother has a 2000 cavalier with 239,000 miles on it and has never had a bit of problem so most likely it was in a particular year of vehicle that bad oil pumps were installed. He also has the 2.2 liter engine. So could you please find out if this is an on going problem because i sure would like to get my mothers money back because she is on a fixed income.

Complete engine shut down while in rush hour traffic at 25 mph on 3 separate occurrences. Each occurrence was 24 to 48 hours after a oil change and "topping off fluids" at the same dealership where the vehicle was purchased. After each oil change, the smell of hot oil was prevalent the next day. After the first engine shut down occurence, the dealership inspected the car but found nothing wrong. The engine has shut down on jan 12, 1999, apr 12, 1999, and june 12, 2000. Oil changes took place 3 days before each occurrence. The engine has never shut down in traffic without a recent oil change. The vehicle speeds at the time of the engine shut down have all been approximately 25 mph due to rush hour traffic while on the expressway.

We have had problems with this car from the date that it was purchased.the brake rotor problems have been worked on several times, and it will stop for a while, but will continue to worsen with time.the abs light and low coolant light have been on and off for over and year and we were told that we would have to pay to have them fixed, the sound from the exhaust, possibly the catalytic converter, has been going on for over a year and again, we were told we needed to replace it, that it was not covered under warranty.then engine is sounding more awful as time goes on...lots of noise under the hood especially at crusing speed, and then again when slowing to a stop, and more recently even when idling.not only was this car not serviced properly when i would bring it in with a complaint, but i feel as if the dealers were purposely putting me off just so the warranty would run out and i would have to fix these problems myself.obviously i am not the only on that has had similiar problems.and also, the car has been leaking antifreeze for a number of months, but cant seem to find the leak.definitely can smell the burning antifreeze, especially after an extended trip.

In jul7 of 1999, the ets off light and theenginechecklight came on.the mechanic said the computer showed due to emission regulations, the egr valve needed replaced.replaced the valve, a month later the two lights came on again.i was told the egr valve was defective.had it replaced again.a couple months later, the two lights came on again.the mechanic told us the system was very sensitive, but the egr was fine and just reset the lightls.last week the two lights came on again, the egr was replaced again.the next day, the car started jerking fiercely and the two lights came on again.i don't know what the problem is with this system and we are having a difficult time finding the problem.i don't know if it's a computer defect, a valve defect or what.but it's not save to have a vehicle that constantly shuts off the traction system due to this problem and causes the car to jek while driving.

In normal removal/installation of lug nuts using tools supplied with vehicle, i personally have broken 6 of the lug bolts off. Since i have owned this vehicle, not one of the wheels has been put on or removed with an impact wrench. The dealership says thats the only way they could have been stressed like this. I was not, on any of the 6 lugs, placing undue pressure nor was i using "cheaters" or any such thing. In the normal way you would remove a tire when rotating or changing to the spair they broke. This has happend on 3 seperate tires on the vehicle: 3 lugs drivers side front, 2 drivers side rear and 1 passengers side front. I believe there is a defect in the lug bolts.

As i was going to turn the switch on to turn on my car it didn't want to start. I had some one fix it but could not find a way to fix it. They had to add a button under the steering wheel to start the car as i turn the switch on. There was couple a of times where the car would go on passlock by itself and wouldn't start until a long period ofwaiting. The external headlights burn constantly and i would buy new bulbs for the back lights. One time our neighbor said he heard noise like fireworks on our property and he said that he seen our car was sparking light out of the steering wheel. That morning of that day he told us and as we were checking the car i could smell something burned. As a result of that the car didn't want to start . The auto repair people had to come to our house to figure out what was wrong with it. They had told me that some wires inside the steering wheel had burned but mostly i have been fixing more of electrical switches and burned wires. The first incident that occur was in 2009. It was that the switch of the key engine did not want to start. Someone came to fix it but could not find a way to repair it. He had to add a button under the steering wheel and i would be tuning the key to the engine to start i would have to push that button to start the car. I would have to be replacing light bulbs constancy from the rear back of the single light. The theft lock system would be turning it self on while i would be driving. Thankfullythere was accident because of that. But i would be struggling to start my car .i had to wait some couple of minutes to start the car. The recent incident that occur was when my neighbor heard like some fireworks in our side of our house. He took a look and he seen that our carwas some sparkling lights out of the steering wheel. That was around midnight what he seen andhe told us that morning. As i walk towards the car i could smell smoke as if something burn. I wanted to start my car but wouldn'tstart. Some one came to fixed it and had to replace some cable from the steering wheel becausethat was that cause the sparking of the fire.

Rear center stop light housing, was observed smoking inside vehicle, further investigation revealed 2 bulbs burned out and lens plastic burned onto lights.

Vehicle has defective headlights. Consumer has replacedheadlights three times. The headlights fill up with water, making t it very difficult to drive.

My headlights including bright lights would not work due to a corroded headlight harness. On the first two failures the corroded wires were replaced by splicing good wiring to the existing harness. Finally i purchased a new harness ($275) for a total cost of approm. $700 incl. Labor. The harness which was replaced was the origional factory installed part.

This past thursday, 10/11/01, for the third time, my headlights have gone out while i have been driving at night.i have had the switch replaced twice before and am scheduled to have it replaced a third time.this switch runs my headlights, brights, turn signals, and cruise control.i have never had any problems except with the headlights.the connection appears to be burning out.i do not think it should be burning out so often or in this case, so quickly - 3 months since the last time i had the switch replaced.i have decided there must be something wrong with the connection between the switch and the engine that is causing this, therefore something chevy should take care of and in my case, reimburse me for, since this will be the third time i'll have to pay for repairs in the 5 years i have owned my car.i also feel, however, more importantly, that this is not safe, to be driving along at night and have your headlights go out.my rear lights stay on, which i am grateful for, but having no headlights makes it very difficult to drive.

Low beam switch failed.

My 1997 chevrolet cavalier was purchased in june of 1999. Since that time, i have had at least twelve incidents with the failure of my tail lights. There seems to be some type of shortage in the line because i have purchased more bulbs than i would like to remember.i have also received one citation as well as two warnings in reference to the broken tail light. Recently i saw that the more newer models of the cavalier have been recalled to fix the tail light but not the later ones. Hopefully this complaint will help to rectify the problems that i have been having.

I am very frustrated.i am now looking at having to replace the switch that controls my headlights, turn signals, and cruise control yet again, and this time only 3 weeks after it was last replaced, which was 1/2/02 and that was only 2 and 1/2 months after i last had it replaced in october, and before that, it was replaced in august (in all my car has had 5 switches since i bought it new and now looking at having a 6th).for a switch to burn out like this so frequently, is a hazard and not safe, especially when driving.i have had, in the past, my headlights go out while i was on a free-way at night.my mechanic, on 1/2/02 also replaced the actual headlights at the recommendation of a chevy dealer mechanic, who told him that apparently the trailblazers are also experiencing this same problem because they have the same switch.i think the chevy dealer should issue a recall on this and take care of the problem.i shouldn't have to take my car in every month or two to have the part replaced.it is not fair to my mechanic who has to do it free, and not fair to me because it is a big inconvenience, not to mention unsafe to have this problem occuring so frequently.perhaps a recommendation from you would get chevy to do something about this problem.

The fuel pump overheats when idling and it went out. (noisily, it sounded like a dentist's drill)before going out i took it in for a diagnostic because the car was pumping gas fumes into the cab and they found nothing wrong. Because it is in the gas tank it cost me over $700 to replace.

On may 29 1998 my cars ets/ engine check light came on, and i took it to a chevrolet dealer to find out what the problem was. They told me that it was the number 2engine cylinder misfiring, and they tried to fix the problem. Within the next few days i was back for the same problem. This time the called the technical assistant for help, and they did this another time as they did not fix the problem.i then move to ft. Polk la. As i am in the military. On 1 jan 9, the same problem started up again. This time they did the same thing the other shop did.i have had my car in the shop for a total of 4 times that they have worked on it, replacing the cylinder cap/fuel injector and coil housing. And they talked to the technical assistantce personnel at chevrolet.the last time i had my car in the shop was 29jan 99, and they hooked a computer up to it. Drove it for a week to try to creat the problem so they could take a picture of the system.but the lights never came on. So they gave me back my car with the problem still not fixed, and the chevrolet corp. I peviously called this in but just received it thru the mail and it was not correct.what happened was i was driving the car about 7 minutes, it was very low on gas i have never let it get that low before, the road curved then came to a stop sign when i did stop the light that said "check gages" came on, i looked the only gage that was low was the gas i had to drive about 2-4 more minutes to the gas station. I pulled it stopped, turned off car, got out my credit card "texaco" put it in the slot, waited for it to approve, pulled out pump, pressed button, uncapped my gas tank, put in pump and pressed the handle so it would pump automatically, went to drivers side of car put my credit card back in my purse, came back around to pump and started to hold the handle down so it would pump faster, all the sudden flames started coming out of the gas tank, i yanked out pumped and moved away.the employees at the station came out and put the fire out with fire extinguishers.the police showed up but did not ask any questions except was that my car and was i alright.the fire department came out and looked around i guess to make sure that all the fire was put out, they did make a remark about possibly the gas tank was not grounded, which could of caused it to get very hot because it was low on gas.but again they did not have a forensic mechanic with them to look over the car, so that was more or less a "guess" on their part.i then finally got a hold of a towtruck so that they could tow my car to the dealership.the reference no. For the previous questionaire that was mailed to me is 831265.

Called to have recall number 07e015000 at delphi. Paul (customer service rep) clearly would not let me have the recall., after answering all the question.

Dtrecall 00v053000was issued concerningthe fuel system. This vehicle was not included due to vin.gasoline was leaking fromthe return and the feed line. The return line started leaking first and thena month later, the feed line started leaking. Noticedit on july 29, 2005 this is when the return metal fitting was leaking and the returnstarted leakingon august 29, 2005. Contacted the dealer, the part that has to be replaced, includingthe whole unit, and with labor would cost$600.00 or $700.00. Also, ignition switchrecall 02v070000. This vehicle failed to start.the vehicle would not turn over it completely. The dash warning lights would come on. The dealer has not looked at any of these problems.there wasalso a recall98v146000 concerning air bags.vehicle'sair bag light was on.did not havethe dealer check this.

Dt: while driving 30 mph, the consumer slowed down at a traffic light behind other cars and the engine unexpectedly died.consumer made several attempts to restart the vehicle, the attempts wereunsuccessful.the gas tank level gauge displayed there was gas.there was about 1/8 of an inch display that gas was still in the tank.consumer realized he was out of gas after he could not restart the vehicle.consumer had to send his nephew to a corner gas station to get some gas to put into the vehicle.once the gas was put in the vehicle it restarted and the consumer proceeded to the nearest gas station.no other problems.this was the first and only incident of this type.consumer did not consult the dealership about the eproblem.consumer felt this was a safety issue because the gas gauge indicator did not go all the way down to empty when it was empty.the consumer did contact the dealer.

My 1987 chevy cavaliar shut off in the middle of driving multiple times. The first time i heard clicking in the cluster and the theft system light turns on and my fuel pump shuts down. I have been in very critical places while this situation takes place. The theft system has shut my vehichle off on the highway, in the intersection ect.. I have tryed to reset this system numerous times. I have come to the knowledge that this is a serious problem with many chevy cavaliars and other gmmodels. This should be a recall and should be fixed. I, a loyal gm customer,should not have to drive a unpredictable vehichle that has security problems that are due to the original making of the system. I have no money to pay for this and am stuck with this problem. It is very unsafe.

While on vacation consumer was loading luggage in rear right door, and doorshut onconsumer's finger. Doorwould not release from outside, it took three people took get consumer's hand out, consumer feltdoor latch had a defect.it was a rental car.

Speedometer cable failed.

The consumers daughter was involved in an accident and theair bags did not deploy.mrthe shift gears may have been the cause, due to a recall.the gears locked up, while the consumer was downshifting at a red light.it was determined that the slave cylinder had gone out. Scc *nlm

The engine overheated, and stalled.the spark plugs melted.the technician found the head warped, causing excessive internal exhaust heat.the dealer replaced the relay switch, removed the head and resurfaced.the electric fans don't turn on.the technician found the fan relay, ect sensor, and fusible link shorted(removed replaced).the vehicle had surged and died out.the sensor connector clip broken and was replaced.the console under the radio had cracked.the vehicle wouldn't start, due to multiple dtc plugs fouled.the vacuum line had broken, and the connectors were re-pinned.the vehicle wouldn't start until the engine cooled down.the alternator was not charging and there was poor battery contact to the terminal.the alternator was replaced.between the speeds of 25-30 mph, the vehicle felt like it was going to rev up.the transmission did not shift into gear.the transmission was replaced and the cooler lines were flushed.there was noise coming from the engine and or the defective timing chain.the tensioner was replaced/resealed, the timing chain was greased, and the serpentine belt was replaced.scc

My cavalier 1997 (95,000 miles) out of no reason during cold day today 1/2/08, can not move for no apparent reason. Initially i can back up my car out of the drive way, and drive a few blocks away. When i stop at the stop sign, i found the car can not move for a few feets to stuck at the middle of the road. I had waited for 5 minutes checking out what wrong with the car. Then car slowly can move. My suspect, there is suddenly no fluid in the clutch for no apparent reason. I believe there is a design defect on this pcm from gm. Slowly it gains more power. But i loose my trust on this vehicle. I remember i saw 4 years ago similar cavalier vehicle at the oil change company. She experienced the same problem, could not move the car at all. 1997 chevy cavalier was moved and park next to another car. It was brought to a complete stop with the brakes and then the transmission was shifted into park. As the driver was getting out of the car, the car start moving forward,rolled down a hill a crashed into trees, totaling the car. The car's transmission level was still in park. Engine light came on while driving, took to shop was told that the computer showed a transmission problem but none was found, light came on again within 24 hours took to shop again still showing trans problem still unable to find problem was told that the only way to reset light was to put on computer but could not promise would not happen again.

At random times when attempting to shift into reverse gear, you must first shift transmission through 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears, this can take up to 15 seconds, which can be very dangerous in an emergency situation.

Intermittently when vehicle isstillin the drive position with foot on brake,the vehicle leaps forward and shuts off and there is a loud crashing sound.. This has happened 3 times since 12/96. Vehicle will be taken to shop today.

Automatic seat belts do not work unless seats are all the way forward or all the way back. Passenger's side occupant hit head on windshield when a sudden stop was made, seat belt failed to restrain occupant, resulting in an injury.

Seat belts, by buckels have a plastic piece that has cracked from heat and provents it to stay tight on all 4 belts.this also provents me, pasenger, and my childrens car seats from being tight and securley fastend. Pore design on these.

The cinch plates on both rear seat belts in my vehicle are broken.because of this, i cannot properly install my child's car seat.i have been given the run-around by two different dealerships about this problem.i have been told that the entire seat belt assemblies would have to be replaced at a cost to me of over $200.i e-mailed gm today regarding this problem.the cinch plates should be made of metal so they cannot break.additionally, safety belt defects should be repaired by the manufacturer at no cost to the customer.my child and i have not been in car accident, but it's very scary knowing that the locking clip that i have to use on the seat belt to try to get the car seat in tight enough, may not work in case of a collision.i am very concerned about this, and i hope that a recall can be issued to have this problem repaired.thank you very much, karen newsome

Driving in outside lane a transfer truck crossed into cavalier's lane.went off road & rolled 3 times side to side& then front to back 2 times. Driver thrown about 30 ft from rear window.shoulder/lap belt did not restrain driver. Passenger belts held. Both injured. No air bags deployed.

The passenger side seat starting moving when sitting on it 5 months after car with purchased brand new-- the dealer fixed the problem-- entire component underneath seat was replaced. 11 months later same problem-- dealer fixed again at no charge-- then2 years later after warranty ran out it happened again-- its slides slightly when braking. I have not had the money to try to fix the problem again-- i know the dealer will charge me now since it is out of warranty a long time ago.

I was a passenger in my car that was rear-ended on 12/26/99 at approx55-60 mph while waiting for oncoming traffic to make a left-hand turn. This pushed us into the oncoming traffic lane stopping withing 2-3 inches front a front end collision. The passenger front seat slid forward to the dashboad,causing my legs and wrists to hit the dashboard. This caused severe bruising and contusions to my shins (the worst being my right leg), my wrists were sprained from dashboard, neck whiplashed both sides and spinal/low back pain from pelvis being pushed up, causing compression on lower spine, lower right abdominal pain with nausea, diarreah and low grade fevers.saying maybe appendix or muscular.i remember slamming into dashboard even with seatbelt on. The contact owns a 1997 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that when engaging the brakes, all the brake fluid leaked from the brake line. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the technician stated the brake lines were corroded and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The anti-lock brakes engage at inappropriate times, at low speeds, precisely as described in the recent recall of gm trucks and suvs.the problem comes and goes.it can occur at very low speeds, and despite very slight pressure applied to the brakes.it is most common on hills, but also occurs on flat surfaces.it occurs on dry as well as wet surfaces, although it is more common on wet surfaces.we have been to the dealer many times and although they have replaced the front brake pads and both front rotors resurvaced and the rear shoes adjusted (at a cost to us of $200.00) the problem did not go away.we are certain this is the same problem as the trucks and suvs and that the recall should be extended to the cavalier.

We have had problems with this car from the date that it was purchased.the brake rotor problems have been worked on several times, and it will stop for a while, but will continue to worsen with time.the abs light and low coolant light have been on and off for over and year and we were told that we would have to pay to have them fixed, the sound from the exhaust, possibly the catalytic converter, has been going on for over a year and again, we were told we needed to replace it, that it was not covered under warranty.then engine is sounding more awful as time goes on...lots of noise under the hood especially at crusing speed, and then again when slowing to a stop, and more recently even when idling.not only was this car not serviced properly when i would bring it in with a complaint, but i feel as if the dealers were purposely putting me off just so the warranty would run out and i would have to fix these problems myself.obviously i am not the only on that has had similiar problems.and also, the car has been leaking antifreeze for a number of months, but cant seem to find the leak.definitely can smell the burning antifreeze, especially after an extended trip.

My abs light went on after i had the brakes done. This occured several weeks after. My mechanic look at it and said the computer board was broken and it would be expensive. So now the automatic braking system does not work.

Took car to dealership to see why abs brake light stayed on. They found the bearings had fallen out of abs box. The mechanic stated it was a sealed unit and he did not know how the bearings fell out. Abs system does not work.

Sold my 1997 chev. Cavalier to a 17 year old girl. Her dad took car for test drive before cash purchase. He went 200 feet down the street then backed up into my driveway. He said brake warning lite came on and brake pedal went to floor. We saw brake fluid pouring from under car. The brake line was rusted and blew out. I took the car to tuffy auto center and they spliced new brake lines to fix. I was shocked to see that plain steel lines were routed underneath the car and exposed to all kinds of corrosive elements. We were all thankful that the girl did not buy the car then get into a terrible accident that day. How many other cavaliers are out there in dangerous condition? i can not see how gm got away with brake and gas lines installed in such a cheap and potentially dangerous location. Brakes/rotors:driving approximately 50mph and attempting to slow down, brakes went all the way to the floor and did not work. Took in for repair, and they said nothing was wrong. They resurfaced the rotors and replaced one lug and stud with strip, cleaned and rear overlapping operation. Took vehicle home and drove vehicle on 07-jul-97, and on the way home the brakes were dragging/grindingand pulling like the brakes are locked.

I heard of a recent recall concerning the abs braking system on gm vehicles. It sounds like what has happened to my son''s 1997 chevrolet cavalier. When coming to a stop at below 10 miles per hour, for no reason the abs system kicked in making it very difficult to stop safely. I had to pull the fuse and by-pass the system to make the car safe to drive again.

I was in heavy stop and go traffic.i was following the vehicle ahead of me at a safe distance (the other drive will certify this).that vehicle stopped suddenly, and i applied my brakes to stop as well.my vehicle slowed down inadequately and i rear-ended the other vehicle.i estimate my speed before i applied the brakes to be between 10 and 15 mph, and that i had between 30 and 40 feet between me and the vehicle ahead of me.i would have normally expect not to have any problems stopping under these curcumstances.as i try to remember the incident, i remember the brake pedal being very hard -- i was consciously pushing the brake as hard as i could.i have practiced emergency stopping and evasive lane change maneuvers on every car i have owned.this car does have abs, but i'm convinced that the abs failed to work correctly, and contributed to the accident.

This failure is the third one experienced.the first two were reported to mac haik service center and supposedly repaired by replacing the rear drums.i am currently filing a complaint against chevrolet because of the number of times this rear brake lockup has occured

It seems to me that this is a systemic problem with anti lock breaks that are placing drivers in a precarious position.lucky for me there were not vehicles in front of me when the brakes acted as they did.otherwise i would have rear ended the vehicle in front of me with damage and possible injury to both of us.

Have had many problems with car - at 20,000 - the dealer replaced the front brakes and machined rotors, after i requested they be checked due to squeaking.service covered under warranty.at 30,000 - the battery failed on car while parked.had car towed to dealership and replaced battery.dealer stated that there was a faulty battery cell.service covered under warranty.at 40,000 miles, horn has failed.currently negotiating with dealer to replace without cost.have always had abs problems - car will buck and jerk under certain wet pavement conditions when abs should not activate.concerned about this - but cannot afford cost of replacing abs.dealer has looked at brakes and said nothing about abs problems.have banging/clanging noise from right rear of car when car is cold.unsure what causes this.after reading the consumer complaints and defects on this website, believe that my car has these same defects.frightened that my car is now incredibly unreliable and may catch fire like other cars listed.suggestions?

This is an ongoing problem with the front rotors becoming warped after about 15,000 to 20,000 miles of use. I went to the dealer twice under warrenty and both times they turned the roters. I have since replaced the roters and brake pads three times. I think this is highly unusual. I fear someday the braking system will completly fail.

The car jerks when the brakes are applied. The dealer replaced the rotors at around 25,000 miles. The next time it happened, it was at around 40,000 miles. The dealer would not replace the rotors. At around 64,000 miles it has started again. The first time i had to take this to the dealer, they knew with out looking at the car what it was. I feel that this is a safety issue and these rotors are defective and the company should have to replace them.

Abs brake problems; when applying the brakes, under normal braking conditions, the pedal is very hard and the brakes lock up. Driver has to downshift to get vehicle to stop. On 3/2/98, the front brake rotors were turned. Taken to dealer 2 other times for brake problems. Dealer could not find any prolbems with the vehicle. Driver was involved in a crash on 8/17/98 because of this condition.

Took vehicle home and drove vehicle on 07-jul-97, and on the way home the brakes were dragging/grindingand pulling like the brakes are locked.

We have had a problem with losing the power steering for over two years. At first, i thought the car stalled and then regained the motor as the power steering came back on. Steering rod failed causing noise in front of vehicle.

I was pulling out of a driveway and had great difficulty trying to turn the steering wheel of the car. This continued as i made 3 more turns. It finally went back to normal after driving 5 miles.the next day it resumed being very difficult to steer. Rack and pinion failure. While turning onto the interstate my 17 year olds 1997 chevy cavalier steering locked, makiing it impossible to turn the wheel to the left. Fortunately she only grazed the gaurd rail but this could have easily been a fatal failure.

The recall involves the lower pinion bearing in the power steering gear may separate, permitting movement of the pinion shaft.report indicate loss of power steering.there have been 15 report of crashes and three injuries that may be related to the condition, but no fatal injuries.i called general motors, described to them the problem with the car, which i had to have towed to my house.i gave them my vin # and the reply i got was that i am not involved in the recall.i have recalls for minor repairs but i am not on this recall list.i am a bit disturbed with this reply.my vehicle was built within the time frame of which was described.due to this problem i was nearly in a fatal accident.i was told to have the repairs done and then if my car fell under the recall i could fight to be reimbursed.so what their trying to tell me is drive the car, which cannot be driven at this point,get in an accident then they don't have to put me the recall list because the car has been totaled.this is a very poor way of taking care of a person's life when they know there is something wrong with the car. The engine overheated, and stalled.the spark plugs melted.the technician found the head warped, causing excessive internal exhaust heat.the dealer replaced the relay switch, removed the head and resurfaced.the electric fans don't turn on.the technician found the fan relay, ect sensor, and fusible link shorted(removed replaced).the vehicle had surged and died out.the sensor connector clip broken and was replaced.the console under the radio had cracked.the vehicle wouldn't start, due to multiple dtc plugs fouled.the vacuum line had broken, and the connectors were re-pinned.the vehicle wouldn't start until the engine cooled down.the alternator was not charging and there was poor battery contact to the terminal.the alternator was replaced.between the speeds of 25-30 mph, the vehicle felt like it was going to rev up.the transmission did not shift into gear.the transmission was replaced and the cooler lines were flushed.there was noise coming from the engine and or the defective timing chain.the tensioner was replaced/resealed, the timing chain was greased, and the serpentine belt was replaced.scc

The vehicle has been at the dealership on numerous occasions due to rodents accessing the air conditioning /heating system, consumer has had to replace components in the system due to nesting and dead rodents, which caused damage and prevented the air conditioner from functioning, consumer is concerned about the design of the structure or ventilation system that would allow for passage to the interior systems of the vehicle.*mjs

The contact owns a 1997 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that while having the vehicle inspected, the mechanic stated the passenger and driver side of the frame was completely rusted. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 120,000.

My cavalierframe rotted and broke. This is very serious do to the fact that i lost control of my vehicle and almost crashed.

When making a left turn vehicle will pull strongly to right,also hard to make a right hand turn, consumer was informed by mechanic, that rack and pinion needed to be replaced.

When driving on any sort of bumpy road there is a constant 'squeak, rusty sound' in the front suspension.it sounds like a old squeaky bed.also with backing up a loud long squeak comes from the front end supspension.i've had the front brakes changed and pads replaced twice (due to mechanics negligence).at this same time i complained about the noise and they checked it out and found no problems, but the noise is still there.it's a very annoying sound especially when driving, you think everyone around can hear it and also it sounds as if something is going to fall apart from the front end (?) suspension!

I was involed in a 3 car crash.one of the cars hit a vehicle broadside and then bounced off her and hit the rear left panel and bumper of my car.i took it in to get it fixed because after the accident i experienced a loud noise from the back and vibrations when i travel more than 50 mph.the dealer called me and told me that he had fixed the body damage but noticed my rear axle was bent.he was waiting on aaa to call to ok it getting fixed.well, they never stopped by to take a look at it becuase looking at the body damage they said there was no way it could have casued a bent rear axle.he said they only way i could have gotten a bent axle was from a direct hit to the tire or gone off the road.the man driving hit me at least 35 mph right there at my tire but from the looks of it i can't tell if he hit the tire.the ins guy said that the problem was probably there before the accident and i just didn't notice it.what ever!my alignment was just fine and the wear on my tires was from normal wear before the accident.the way it vibrates doesn't "just happen".i am sure he is trying to insinuate that i had something to do with it.please check to see if there are problems with rear, side crashes.is there a possibility cavaliers don't withstand well collisions from the rear and side.the insurance co is declining to pay this problem and is telling me to make out another claim for the bent rear axle.that is stupid.i never had this problem till after the accident.

Left tire bone broke in two while driving at 30mph. No previous incident caused excess stress in car structure. Control of the car was lost, but brought to stop in middle of street. Manufacturer contacted. They said this was due to wear and tear in par. However, tires had been inspected by a dealer 3 weeks before. No fisures reported then. Owner feels lucky this didn't happen in a highway. I also feel mad at the unresponsiveness of manufacturer, who apparently regards this part as disposable along with the security and the lives of its customers.

Car was parked for about 10 hours.when started and put in drive, "ets off" light flashed and then remained on steady.along with this, the check engine light also stayed on.both lights remained on for duration of drive home from work, approximately 25 minutes.engine sounds fine, no strange noises, but warning lights still remain on.taking it to a mechanic to be checked out.

Car smells like gas in warm and hot weather, smell comes in through the vent system.chevy med-ved in arvada colorado cannot find the problem, but replaced the exhaust gas canister, stating it was saturated with gas, car still has the same smell after this replacement.many other repair shops referred me to the dealership which i took the car to.the problem still exists, a potential fire hazard if fumes of gas are existent-this is my concern, not to mention the smell that comes in the car is not of clean air-my second concern.summary of activity:this problem has been noticed since summer 2000.air conditioning and repair shop refers me to dealership, advises me to stop driving the car because it is a fire hazard.in 2000 and 2001, failure to duplicate gas leak smell when taken to dealership.in summer 2004, gas leak evident at dealership, replaced e-vac canister, gives advice not to "top off the tank when filling up with gas."october 2004, smell is still evident.

We have had problems with this car from the date that it was purchased.the brake rotor problems have been worked on several times, and it will stop for a while, but will continue to worsen with time.the abs light and low coolant light have been on and off for over and year and we were told that we would have to pay to have them fixed, the sound from the exhaust, possibly the catalytic converter, has been going on for over a year and again, we were told we needed to replace it, that it was not covered under warranty.then engine is sounding more awful as time goes on...lots of noise under the hood especially at crusing speed, and then again when slowing to a stop, and more recently even when idling.not only was this car not serviced properly when i would bring it in with a complaint, but i feel as if the dealers were purposely putting me off just so the warranty would run out and i would have to fix these problems myself.obviously i am not the only on that has had similiar problems.and also, the car has been leaking antifreeze for a number of months, but cant seem to find the leak.definitely can smell the burning antifreeze, especially after an extended trip.

I have called this morning (12/06/00) to nhtsa, you said you will send me a form to fill out.but then i got into this website.so i would like to file and document asap becasue i feel very unsafe while driving.i am sure my vehicle has a defect or problem which could cause an accident or injury or death to myself and others.the problem first appeared in early july/00: soon after starting the car, warning lights (oil pressure and charging system) lit up and the car stalled and lost power.power brake was gone, and i was heading down a steep slope!luckily i managed to stop the car without causing an accident.i can restart the car and drive on.it happened 2 times more and i took it to the dealer to check.it cannot repeat the condition, so nothing was done.for the next short while nothing like that happened, although several times 2 other warning lamps will lit up (enhanced traction system off and malfunction indicator).i called the dealer to make an appointment but the lights will go off, and i cancelled the appointment...on the night of 11/28/00, the same dangerous situation occurred again.since the dealership was not immediately available, i took it to a mechanic who ran a computer test on my car, and found taht faulty code #704 had occurred intermittently in my transmision system.but again, the mechanic cannot duplicate the condition, so cannot fix anything.i called gm's customer assistance and the dealer to see what i can do.the advice is that there is no similar incidents reported.and i just have to wait for the condition to happen again somehow.but the dilemma is that even if the stalling happens, the car can restart, then the condition will not exist and even if i bring/tow it to the dealer, they won't know what to fix!!so i have no recourse to take except to drive the car around with this danger on my mind all the time!there must be a better way to have the car fixed or the matter resolved, i would think/hope?thankyou.

In december 1999, i experienced a loss of engine coolant level and the low engine coolant indicator illuminated on the instrument panel.i assumed the thermostat was failing and had a local service station replace it and flush the radiator.several days later the low engine coolant light illuminated on the instrument panel.upon inspection, i had lost some coolant and experienced the smell of hot coolant which i attributed to the recent radiator flush.i took it back to the service station and the coolant system was pressure tested to check for leaks and passed.after being idle for over 1 week, on january 3, 2000, i checked the engine coolant level and it was low.i filled the engine coolant reservior to full and after short trips the level had held at full.on january 4, 2000, while driving to work, i experienced a rough idle and in addition to the low engine coolant level illuminating on the instrument panel, the check engine light and the traction control lights also lit up on the dash.i took it to the dealer, hawthorne chevrolet, expecting to have them finally resolve my problem and they informed me they suspected my engine block was cracked and estimated the job at over $3400.00.i noteiced service bulletin #'s 67-62-04, 970501776109 & 970501738309 posted on your website refers to similar defects as those i have experienced.if the engine has a defect, what recourse do i have?i have followed the recommended maintainance schedule and feel frustrated that gm and hawthorne chevrolet knew of the potential problems but failed to take the preventative measures to avoid perminant damage to the engine.i have taken the car to the service station where i had the thermostat replaced and their conclusion is the head gasget has failed or the head has cracked, based on the fact that there isn't any coolant in the oil pan. I received an estimate of $950.00 for the repairs.i'm not a happy cavalier owner.i thank you.

On may 29 1998 my cars ets/ engine check light came on, and i took it to a chevrolet dealer to find out what the problem was. They told me that it was the number 2engine cylinder misfiring, and they tried to fix the problem. Within the next few days i was back for the same problem. This time the called the technical assistant for help, and they did this another time as they did not fix the problem.i then move to ft. Polk la. As i am in the military. On 1 jan 9, the same problem started up again. This time they did the same thing the other shop did.i have had my car in the shop for a total of 4 times that they have worked on it, replacing the cylinder cap/fuel injector and coil housing. And they talked to the technical assistantce personnel at chevrolet.the last time i had my car in the shop was 29jan 99, and they hooked a computer up to it. Drove it for a week to try to creat the problem so they could take a picture of the system.but the lights never came on. So they gave me back my car with the problem still not fixed, and the chevrolet corp. Won't do any thing about the problem, but continue to work on it under the warranty.i have been told that they can't fix the problem, and the technical assistants are out of suggestions.i have filed a complaint with the chevrolet corp, and feel that nothing will be done about my problem.i feel that they have had several attempts to fix the problem and can't , and they won't replace the car.

Vehicle will stall while idling and without warning , dealer has replaced throttle positioning center, and reprogrammed pcm, but defect still occurring, and causing safety hazard.

Vehicle experienced loss of control, due to throttle sticking, causing vehicle to catch fire and injuries.

While drivingvehicle accelerates without throttle application. The vehicle acts as though it is in cruise, but the cruise control is turned off. Driver has to put vehicle in neutral to get it to stop.applying the brakes does not help. Dealer is not able to duplicateproblem.vehicle has been to the dealer at least three times for this reason.

While traveling at a highway speed of 55mph the accelerator got stuck, causing the vehicle to accelerate to 85 mph, blowing the brakes, and causing sparks to fly from tires. To stop, consumer was on an incline that coasted the vehicle to a stop, and consumer shut the engine off. Dealer has been contacted.

The contact owns a 1997 chevrolet cavalier.the failure mileage was 72622 ,and the current mileage was 72632.while driving 45 mph the contact released thefoot from the accelerator but the vehicle kept accelerating.after physically lifting the pedal up with theshoe the vehicle continued to accelerate.to stop the vehicle from accelerating the brake was applied for about 9 miles.however, after applying the brake a few times the brake pedal stopped working.she got offthe freeway and made it to dealer where she left the vehicle.the temperature was around 45 degrees. Driving approximately 35mphand vehicle started to accelerate out of control, wandering and unable to steer,ran into border,causing vehicle to flip over.

Dt: the contact stated h the cruise control malfunctioned.while traveling at45 mph he turned on the cruise control switch and the vehicle suddenly accelerated to60 mph. The contact tried to disengage the cruise control several times by depressing the brake pedal which should manually turn off the cruise control switch. However, these attempts were unsuccessful. As a result, he turned the ignition off, and coasted to the side of the road. When he restarted the vehicle the enginerevvedhigh.he turned off the ignition and the vehicle was towed home. Afterwards, he pulled the fuse and deactivated the cruise control. No further repairs have been made.

My rear defrost quit working and i went and checked some of the connections.the connection under the dash had been melted, with the plastic showing evidence of being melted.i have done some checking on the internet and it appears it is a problem.if you check gm cars pontiac, and gm some of the vehicles have had this issue.it appears to be very common based off the forums and you tube video's.it appears in impala, cavalier, sunfire, and this isn't an all inclusive list.this is concerning because it appears to have been a problem for a few years and gm allowed this to happen.

The contact owns a 1997 chevrolet cavalier. All of the windows in the vehicle were cloudy upon shifting into drive gear within a few minutes after it was started. In order to clear the windows the contact had to bang on the dashboard. The failure recurred intermittently during cold weather conditions. The contact removed the blower motor and noticed that some of the mechanisms were covered with rust. The failure was not diagnosed by the dealer.the failure mileage was 180,000 and the current mileage was 195,000.the vin was unavailable.

The vehicle has been at the dealership on numerous occasions due to rodents accessing the air conditioning /heating system, consumer has had to replace components in the system due to nesting and dead rodents, which caused damage and prevented the air conditioner from functioning, consumer is concerned about the design of the structure or ventilation system that would allow for passage to the interior systems of the vehicle.*mjs

My rear defrost quit working and i went and checked some of the connections.the connection under the dash had been melted, with the plastic showing evidence of being melted.i have done some checking on the internet and it appears it is a problem.if you check gm cars pontiac, and gm some of the vehicles have had this issue.it appears to be very common based off the forums and you tube video's.it appears in impala, cavalier, sunfire, and this isn't an all inclusive list.this is concerning because it appears to have been a problem for a few years and gm allowed this to happen.

Incident to report: 97 chevrolet cavalier back window cracked when closed door. This resulted in broken glass all over my infant's car sit and toys.if my infant was in the car at the time, she would have suffered major injury.

Rear window blew out and exploded; causing glass to shatter. Dealer notifed and refused to replace window unless cost goes to consumer.

I have a 97 chevrolet cavalier convertible that i have had to take in 3 times because the driver side power window stopped working and 3 times because the passenger side window quite working.

When driving with the top down and the driver's andpassenger's side windows up, the support mechanism can not support the windows and the clips eventually break. Chevrolet will not recommend to the owners to lower the windows or develop a fix for this problem. This pressure can also put stress on the window automatic motors causing them to break.

1997 chevrolet cavalier air bags deployed for no reason.*njan inspection revealed no mechanical reason for the deployment of the air bag. Also, the sunroof was inoperative. The consumer was informed her vehicle identification number was not included in the recall for the air bag.

When driving at any speed and applyingthe brakes they will go straight to the floorboard and hardly stop the vehicle. Alsoconsumer is having problems with the windshield.

About 1-2 months ago my wife tried to start the car and she said that all of the systems(i.e. Windshieldwiper blades,interior warning lights, etc.) started going off all at once, the brake pedal would't push in, there was a loud buxxing noise, and the car would not start.ever since we have had to try several times before the vehicle would start and there have been multiple occasions when we are driving along (speed doesn't seem to play a role) and the car will react in a similar manner and stop running.after this happens, it can take us up to 10-15 minutes to get it started again.just this morning it happened again and if the truck behind us had not swerved as it did, it would have totalled our car.we then spent almost 20 minutes in the middle of traffic trying to start our car.(this was submitted by brian quinney - husband of said owner).

The windshield wipers arm does not park in the down position when they are turned off, the wipers would remain in upright position distracting the driver's view, delay feature stops at a higher pause level, on one occasion wipers failed completely, dealer states the arm was disengaged causing failure.

Windshield wiper motor stopped working. This caused the wipers to stop & obstructed driver's visibility. Also, the ets light stays on/cd player shorts out/driver's door locks do not release. Been to dealer 7 different times.
