Received recall notification 98v146 in august 98.consumer has contacted the dealer weekly after receipt of recall . Dealer has not received the parts.

I replaced the battery on my 1996 chevrolet cavalier 2.4l with manual transmission about 3 days ago. Today as i was driving to get gas the vehicle started to idle low as if it was not getting enough fuel to the engine. As i came to a stop it got worse and then i check the dash for any indication of malfunction only to see my airbag, check engine, abs, check oil & battery lights flickering. Moments later as i shift into 3rd gear it dies rendering all safety and normal operation of the vehicle nearly impossible. I had to call a friend to jump me 3 more times before reaching my home which was less than a mile away!

In april 2002 i received a letter from teh recall information processing center, royal oak, mi in regards to a defect with the ignition switch. When i checked the internet"nhtsa"i found out that in fact this was not the only recall on my car. The is also an airbag, check engine light and mud flip kit recall. I contacted the dealer and brought my car in to repair all these defects. The next day the check engine light came on again and the car was running rough again. I contacted the dealership and reported the problem. I was told that this has nothing to do with the recall and that the recall for the "check engine light" was fixed the day before and i have to pay if i want to find out what is causing that light to come on. I am not satisfied at all. First of all, i was never contacted in regards to all these other recalls. I have problems with my car everysince around the middle of 2002. When i drive and take my foot of the gas pedal the car keeps going the same speed without slowing down, sometimes it even speeds up. The engine check light keeps coming on and the engine runs real rough. Also when driving the car keeps jerking, like somebody is hitting the brakes and then speeds ups right afterwards. Vehicle was sold without knowledge of recall #98v-146. Mjs

The air bag light came on when vehicle was started after being unused for 1-2 weeks. I took the car in for service and was told of a recall for inadvertant air bag deployment , so i authorized the dealer to do the recall. The dealer then called and said there was a code in the computer telling the air bags to deploy and the computer needed to be replaced before the car should be driven to prevent a possible deployment of the airbags. I was told that even though this fit the recall for inadvertant airbag deployment it was a different problem and would cost around $400 to repair.i then asked the service manager to try and get this fixed by chevrolet and was told that they would not fix it, but i was given a phone number for chevrolet to talk to them myself. I calledand spoke to steve lefcourt who agreed that my complaint seemed to be what was recalled, but was told the next day that my problem was different than the recall because in the recall they reprogramed the computer,but since my cars computer would not accept the reprograming it needed replacement and they would not pay for it.

The airbag modules were no loger functional whicm may result in the unit not working.

In 53000 miles: spontaneous airbag deployment, computer failure, valve train failure.

The contact owned a 1996 chevrolet cavalier. While the contact was making a u turn, another vehicle crashed into the driver side of the vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed. The driver sustained injuries to the head, right shoulder, and left knee. The passenger sustained injuries to the left shoulder. Medical attention was required. The vehicle was towed to a tow yard and deemed destroyed. The vehicle wasnot diagnosed for the air bag failure. The local dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 89,000.

The contact owns a 1996 chevrolet cavalier. While drivingapproximately 25 mph, the contact's vehicle was struck on the driver's side by another vehicle. The driver side air bag did not deploy during the crash; however, it suddenly deployed while the contact attempted to exit the vehicle. The vehicle was towed. A police report was filed. The contact sustained severe whiplash, leg bruises, and head lacerations. Medical attention was required. The contact was treated and released from the hospital under her doctor's supervision. The following day, the doctor determined that the contact's neck was fractured and she was sent to get an mri at the regional hospital. The vehicle was diagnosed by marion chevrolet/cadillac in marion, illinois. The air bag was replaced and the vehicle's body damage was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The vin was unknown. The approximate failure mileage was 5,000.

The vehicle was being driven when all of a sudden the air bag deployed on its own unexpectedly. Manufacturer will be notified by consumer.

I was in an accident that happened on the 26 of this month when i hit the rearend of the truck in front of me i was traveling approx.25mph and my air bags did not deploy it was a straight on collision to the front end of my car.

Consumer experienced problems while having the 1996 chevrolet cavalier recall repairs performed. *mr recall campaign#02v286000.there were problems with the steering mechanism, the ignition and the air bag. *scthe consumer believed that none of the recall repairs were ever made on the vehicle.

When i went to pick up the car and i test drove it i was shocked that now the crank shaft is all of a sudden bad and it will cost me 2,000 there or 5,000 at the dealership. This is in regard to the placement of the seat belts in the back seat of the cavalier. When used in conjuction with infant car seats.all the infant seat manufacturers have issued warnings against using any of their seats with cars where the seat belt is anchored forwardat the crease, which is the case with the 96 cavelier.i was told to contact my vehicle manufacturer, who then told me to talk to the seat manufacturer, getting me no where at all.indeed the only advice i could get was to tighten it as much as i could and it would probably be alright.there are no probability nor shouldthere be when we deal with the life of a child.i find it absolutely unacceptable that there is no way to safely transport my child due to the anchoring of the belt.i can't afford to go and buy a new car.it's bad enough that in the cavalier infant cannot be placed in the middle of the rear seat due to the hump.but on top of this, to place the seat belts so that no seat will work as they were meant to.there is no excuse for this.

Yes car will turn over but won't start it does this at time or u can press the gas to try and start interior light don't work.

Dt:the consumer stated he bought a car on 6-29-05 from klick lewis inc. On his way home when he applied the brakes,suddenly the car felt like it was coming apart. He called the dealer where he bought the car and they told him the vehicle needed front rotors. On friday 7-15-05; before he had taken it in to have the rotors put on, he noticed the car was full of smoke. He called the fire dept. And they came out and diffused the fire and told him that it was an electrical problem and the car could have caught on fire. He then called the salesperson that sold him the car and they said they would have someone get back to him. He has made 5 telephone calls to them and no one has returned his calls.

There's alot of stuff wrong with this car. It ran good and is reliable when running,but recently stop running.

I was driving down the street. While accelerating all the lights on the dashboard lit up - the car shut off and the steering wheel locked.thankfully i was able to pull over in time and i was not driving that fast. Also i was able to pull over safely without hitting anyone.

I have contacted the dealer ship all the way to the complaint dept. About the car shocking you when you get out of it, they informed me that was just happening with that model, they didn't know why.i have never owned a car and had some much trouble with it, and it has been in the shop 2-3 times being repaired while i send in a car payment, i thought brand new cars weren't suppose to give you trouble, guess i was wrong.

This car shuts off while driving like the gm cars being mentioned in the news today. Started in 2005 and was evaluated by multiple mechanics including a chevrolet dealership that kept it over a month. It doesn't show a code when it happens. It randomly shuts off while you are driving (varied speeds). It also randomly won't start. Totally unpredictable when it will quit on you or not start.resetting did not help.car was purchased for daughter (new driver) to drive, but was too unsafe.

Driving down the road, motor stops running and i lost all power both steering and electrical.got it to the side of the road.waited 2 minutes and started it back up it was fine.only did this 2 times within a week period. Engine idle rough since i purchased it in 1998.took it in and they said they could not find anything.came back several times they essentially said thay could do nothing thats just how they run. Motor surges and lags after start up.regardless of temperature.push pedal motor bogs down and then it will take off.replaced almost every sensor under the hood problem is still present. Battery took a dump at almost 4 years. Engine spun #3 and #4 bearings on a cold start up.they advised me that i needed a water pump at the same time.passpower window was always slow.replaced approx mid 2002 rear suspension clunks and sounds like it has lumber in the trunk. Wheel studs snap easily as i have replace approximately 10. Rear brakes drag and grab even after replacement. Front brakes wear excessively. Rubber muffler hanger wears out. Replaced 2 times.

Battery light comes on, and looks as if it is on.when driving in rain the battery warning light comes on, there is no shield under the car to protect the brakes, engine, battery, etc. Dealer contacted, and cannot duplicate the problem, no repairs can be made.

Head gasket on my 1996 chevrolet cavalier. We couldn't figure out why the vehicle would continue to stall , after placing nearly $800.00 worth of new parts in vehicle, changing several alternators and starters, from the ingnition swith recall. I had taken to a mechanic and found out the car had a blown head gasket. Which, apparently there is a recall on other cavaliers, although not with my vin number. I have called gm motors and they want me to have the car diagnosised at their dealership, costing $100-$200. And now having to spend $400-$600 on another defect from these recalls, is really frustrating my family, espically my husband. The problem is that when your driving at night there is a power drain on the electrical system. Whenever you apply the brakes the headlights will dim, the a/c will slow down, and the instrument dash lights will dim.the chevy dealer in inverness first worked on this problem on 1-23-98 and stated that this is normal for this vehicle. The problem continued to get worse so i took the vehicle in again on 2-23-98. Again they couldn't find anything wrong but they said the battery was drained so they went ahead and replaced the battery.this solved the problem for a while but after about two months the problem started again and i returned back to the dealer for repair. Again they said there was nothing wrong with the vehicle but they went ahead and replaced the altenator and recharged the battery. This has not solved the problem and just this last week 12-7-98 i retuned the vehicle to the dealer again. They kept the vehicle for four days and said that they could find nothing wrong but that the battery was drained again so they charged it and that there was nothing else they were going to do. My concern is that my family will be out at night and the vehicle will not start

Knocking noise near trunk area, burning smell constantly, panel lights always show something wrong, ets off light blinking, tilt sticks, horn defective, don't start in warm weather,popping noise in rear side, coolant leaks, power steering hoses had to be replaced because they burned up and leaked fluid onto exhaust system, window rattles when coming down, window not aligned right air comes through on both sides,alarm doesn't work 85% of the time even with new batteries, nothing but problems since june 1, 1999.

Horn hasn't been working since vehicle was purchased. Fuse was replaced, but didn't remedy the problem. Dealer clamed that in different weather &temperatures it will not work. Vehicle stalled on 2 different occasions. Dealer said it was the battery & alternator the1st time.2nd time dealer indicated fuel pump went out.consumer had to cover the cost & felt that they should been able to detect this when they did the diagnostic readinga month ago.

The vehicle had problems with the tail light being inoperative while in use. Replaced the wires of the tail light, problem is still occurring.also, problems with the braking system.had to replace all 4 brakes 4 times.dealer cannot determineproblem.in addition,consumer experiencesproblem with the horn. The horn is connected to the air bag module. It cannot blow unless pushed hard. Afraid air bag would deploy if pounded too hardfor horn to blow. Poor design.after pounding several times horn will blow with only slight pressure. After going through puddles belt slips and power steering quits, battery discharges, poor design which allows for water to splash on drive belts.*mjs

The horn does not always work.it has contribute to two different accidents.the first was when my car backed into another cavalier, same year, and she informed me that her horn would not honk.the second was when a car backed into me and i tried several times tohonk the horn to worn the man he was about to hit me and the horn would not work.this has caused two different accidents just in my case.the horn works occasionally, but it doesn't work more often than it does.this could really be a hazard.

My horn works when it wants to.i didn't work when i bought it.(we bought it used).we replaced the fuse, but it still didn't work.then one day it just worked and continued for months.then it stopped working again.this happen twice.so at this time the horn is still not working.my other problem was my colant light kept coming on.we would add coolant all the time.(it was never close to being empty.)it mostly happen when i was moving, but it happen while sitting still too.it would come off and on constantly.we took it to the dealership and they replaced the coolant sensor.i saw other people also had that problem.

Well, i am not exactly sure of what is wrong, my car stalled out after four turns of the ignition to start it up and then it wouldn't start up again.a few hours later, it started up and it didn't sound normal, it sounded terrible.as soon as someone could contact me, that would be great for i am without a car right now.thank you.casey six

Car was parked in the garage for a several hours when the ignition seemed to be going off all by itself.the car was trying to start by itself.no keys were in the automobile at the time.the process could not be stopped even after the driver tried to turn the ignition.

It stalls in the rain some times it does hard starts ruff ideal some thing call the compter controle module or some thing just like that l got a recall notice on that. Could that have some thing to do with it it was replace.

Sometimes during the initial start-up the car will crank .you have to remove the fuse for the theft-system and disconnect the battery cables and wait at least 30 minutes to let the computer reboot itself.this has happened two times during driving where the car accelerates by itselfand then dies.and after you get it started the theft-system warning light stays on. Until you turn the car off and then back on.

Theft system light started flashing and car wouldnt start. Consumer received a recall 02v070000 regardingignition switch. Had vehicle serviced atdealer ship. However, after vehicle was serviced it caught on fire. Dealer was notified, but refused to service vehicle.

The consumer turned on theengine and noticed smoke coming through the ignition switch, two minutes later, thesteering wheel was on fire. Dealer notified.consumer indicated there was a nhtsarecall on this issue.

In april 2002 i received a letter from teh recall information processing center, royal oak, mi in regards to a defect with the ignition switch. When i checked the internet"nhtsa"i found out that in fact this was not the only recall on my car. The is also an airbag, check engine light and mud flip kit recall. I contacted the dealer and brought my car in to repair all these defects. The next day the check engine light came on again and the car was running rough again. I contacted the dealership and reported the problem. I was told that this has nothing to do with the recall and that the recall for the "check engine light" was fixed the day before and i have to pay if i want to find out what is causing that light to come on. I am not satisfied at all. First of all, i was never contacted in regards to all these other recalls. I have problems with my car everysince around the middle of 2002. When i drive and take my foot of the gas pedal the car keeps going the same speed without slowing down, sometimes it even speeds up. The engine check light keeps coming on and the engine runs real rough. Also when driving the car keeps jerking, like somebody is hitting the brakes and then speeds ups right afterwards. It all began the summer of 1999, the starter broke and kept being replaced because the car would chew it up and spit it out like a bad organ. My attempts to fix it were with firestone and shell. Then i took it to the dealer where they discovered there was a chipped flywheel. The car was fine up until recently it wouldn't start on 3/10/01 so the dealer replaced the ignition. On 3/15/2001 it had poor acceleration so the dealer replaced the ignition wires. On 4/25/01 car wouldn't start again so the dealer replaced the ignition module. I've paid over $4000.00 in repairs since 1999 for the issue of the car not starting.i have been using jerrys chevrolet and heritage chevrolet.

Purchased car in march 96,the strut was replaced about four times .consumer also experienced a tire blow out, dealer advisded her there was nothing they could do, because tire blow out was due to some type of objectthat punctured tire, also air condition went out twice, starter was replaced, torque convertor replaced, and a recall on piston pin, consumer feels that manufacturer should take some type of responsbiilty since this a brand new vehicle.

Abs brake light comes on when the car is in idle. Turn the car off and it will go off.problem could not be duplicated,. Dealer states the harness wires are defective, hazardous to drive vehicle.

The drivers side headlight was dim and it made it very hard to see at night. The has received numerous tickets about this problem. The consumer has noticed this on two or three vehicles a week on cavalier's and sunfire's. The consumer called the dealer and they said they had been having problems with the wire harness in this type of vehicle.

My right headlight is out due to melted wiring, which in talking with my local chevrolet dealer has been a pretty common problem in these cars.as far as i can see chevrolet hasn't issued a safety recall on this problem yet although it is clearly a safety issue.any input you have would be greatly appreciated.thanks.

"ets off" light and "check engine light" remain on while car is in drive. Suggested corrections do not turn lights off. In september 1997 when probelm first occurred, the pcm (on-board diagnostics) was eventually replaced. Dealer alleged they could not tell if there was a problem until part was replaced. When part was replaced, diagnotics revealed no problem. The cost to the dealer was approximately $250.00. Now (two years later) same problem seems to be happening. Dealer says no recourse except to replace module again, at owner cost. Location of module (under wheel well) is such that it is susceptible to water. Thank you. Joan moore

The computer is encased in a split aluminum housing and is not hermetically sealed. This sub assembly is located in the right front of the vehicle surrounded by loose fitting plastic parts. It is subjected to moisture, dirt and in northern climates salt corrosion

Spontaneous fire, totally destroyed inside of car.

I replaced the battery on my 1996 chevrolet cavalier 2.4l with manual transmission about 3 days ago. Today as i was driving to get gas the vehicle started to idle low as if it was not getting enough fuel to the engine. As i came to a stop it got worse and then i check the dash for any indication of malfunction only to see my airbag, check engine, abs, check oil & battery lights flickering. Moments later as i shift into 3rd gear it dies rendering all safety and normal operation of the vehicle nearly impossible. I had to call a friend to jump me 3 more times before reaching my home which was less than a mile away!

This car shuts off while driving like the gm cars being mentioned in the news today. Started in 2005 and was evaluated by multiple mechanics including a chevrolet dealership that kept it over a month. It doesn't show a code when it happens. It randomly shuts off while you are driving (varied speeds). It also randomly won't start. Totally unpredictable when it will quit on you or not start.resetting did not help.car was purchased for daughter (new driver) to drive, but was too unsafe.

Over heating due to head gasket/ thermostat problems.

I am the owner of a 1996 4 door, 2.2 liter chevrolet cavalier automobile that has a faulty timing belt tensioner. The tensioner went and the timing belt skipped, thus causing major damage to the vehicle engine. This vehicle flaw is well documented in some car review magazines.

Blown head gasket vehicle over heating, nothing has been done to repair issue; head gasket recall.the vehicle is running very badly even though a complete tune up has been done; fuel system recallsuspension making lots of noise; rear suspension recall.

Driving down the road, motor stops running and i lost all power both steering and electrical.got it to the side of the road.waited 2 minutes and started it back up it was fine.only did this 2 times within a week period. Engine idle rough since i purchased it in 1998.took it in and they said they could not find anything.came back several times they essentially said thay could do nothing thats just how they run. Motor surges and lags after start up.regardless of temperature.push pedal motor bogs down and then it will take off.replaced almost every sensor under the hood problem is still present. Battery took a dump at almost 4 years. Engine spun #3 and #4 bearings on a cold start up.they advised me that i needed a water pump at the same time.passpower window was always slow.replaced approx mid 2002 rear suspension clunks and sounds like it has lumber in the trunk. Wheel studs snap easily as i have replace approximately 10. Rear brakes drag and grab even after replacement. Front brakes wear excessively. Rubber muffler hanger wears out. Replaced 2 times.

There's alot of stuff wrong with this car. It ran good and is reliable when running,but recently stop running.

Vehicle boughtw/bad water pumpwhichwas leaking badly. Brakes in rear were making metal to metal noise& were slushy. When vehicle was driven any great distance & then stoppped, it would overheat & then stall out. Hard to restart. Odometer numbers not even & out of sync. Water hose is leaking.

Excessive coolantleakage from under car. Car heats up, causing to pullover constantly to get the car to cool down. Seems to be a head gasket problem.

I first noticed the coolant light on at low speeds and when i turned corners.the light never stayed on for more than a few seconds, then i took the vehicle into the dealer to get some recall work completed and they told me that a gasket connecting to my water pump has a slow leak.my brother has a 1997 cavalier z24 and has the same exact problem.i hope you can get something done so others dont have the same problem.thank you.

The water keeps leaking from the weep hole and there was no fault of mine or preventive maintenance that i could of done. Due to the location of the water pump (under the exhaust manifold) the repair is very expensive (approximately $800.00).

Vehicle is overheating.while driving to keep vehicle from overheating has to turn fan on for air conditioning.dealer contacted.

Feb 2000 i replaced a faulty water pump continued to have slow coolant leak...may 2000 head gasket was found to be bad.no recall and extended warranty was .....not purchased buy the extended warranty is what i recommend.

After listening to a squeek noise from trunk area proceed to a clunking noise, i took vehicle in for service. Was advised by dealer that rear strut and it's mount had failed requiring both to be replaced at a cost of over $800.i feel the failure of this assembly to be a manufacturers defect. Muffler failed prematurely. Water pump failed prematurley. Starting to think 1996 cavalier was not engineered very well.

Customer requested to have the the water pump, serpentine belt and coolant replaced, dealer found the water pump to be leaking.

Upper radiator hose failed, coolant pipe failed and leaked. *mjs

My car was manufactured 11/95, has the same head gasket as the 95, but chevrolet will not pay to fix it.

Head gasket on my 1996 chevrolet cavalier. We couldn't figure out why the vehicle would continue to stall , after placing nearly $800.00 worth of new parts in vehicle, changing several alternators and starters, from the ingnition swith recall. I had taken to a mechanic and found out the car had a blown head gasket. Which, apparently there is a recall on other cavaliers, although not with my vin number. I have called gm motors and they want me to have the car diagnosised at their dealership, costing $100-$200. And now having to spend $400-$600 on another defect from these recalls, is really frustrating my family, espically my husband. We don't have the extra money to keep placing in this vechile, i'm a full time student with a 2 year old son and work only part time. I need a reliable car. I can't spend more money at the dealershipand not have a guarentee that they wouldn' fix this part. I know that all the people i have spoken to in school,work and out any where else, hospital for clinicals will not purchase any gm motors vechiles, due to them not wanting to go through this themselves and how i've been unfairly treated by this manufactor. Purchased car in march 96,the strut was replaced about four times .consumer also experienced a tire blow out, dealer advisded her there was nothing they could do, because tire blow out was due to some type of objectthat punctured tire, also air condition went out twice, starter was replaced, torque convertor replaced, and a recall on piston pin, consumer feels that manufacturer should take some type of responsbiilty since this a brand new vehicle.

Vehicle had functioned properly for approximately 35 miles after being picked up from the dealership for an unrelated problem.the coolant light came on, went off, then came on again and stayed on 2 miles before i reached my home.i pulled into the driveway, turned the engine off and heard a noise under the hood.i could not see any problem when i popped the hood, but fluid had begun to puddle under my vehicle that was green in color.the puddle increased in size quickly.it seemed to be the water pump.after finding that the dealership and extended warranty would not help with the cost of a water pump, the car was towed to a auto repair shop that fixes water pumps.the auto repair shop called and said the true problem is a cylinder head gasket.the car was towed to another auto repair shop that cannot get to it until next week.in the meantime, this problem has occurred in other cavaliers and should be covered by a recall by the dealership.the dealership is closed at this time, but i have left a message for the service department to call me.

I have researched on this site, consumer reports, consumer corner, etc. And have found a number of 1996 chevrolet cavaliers have had cylinder head gasket problems.my extended warranty lasted through 100,000 miles.if i had known that this was a reoccurring problem, i might have been able to keep it from occurring.gm/chevrolet has asked the dealership to give me a discount.the dealership has refused due to the mileage on my vehicle being approximately 500 miles over the required 100,000 miles.six (6) days after the incident i received a letter from chevrolet stating that my vehicle experiences this problem and that they would pay for the repairs up to seven (7) years and 100,000 miles.i think this is very convenient.the letter is dated may, 2000.two weeks earlier i was still within the 100,000 mile limit.i have given the dealership permission to fix my vehicle, but i am afraid to pay for the repairs before some type of agreement is reached.unfortunately, gm/chevrolet is not interested in helping me.

The first problem with my cavalier was about 3 months after i bought the car. I was idling in a drive-thru when all the lights on the concole flashed and the car went dead. The car wouldn't restart. I pushed it to the side and waited a few minutes and tried again. I called a tow truck and several hours later, the tow truck arrived and at that time, the car started. I called taylor jeep (where i have a service contract) and they said it might have just been bad gas or the car overheating and to not worry about it since the car is running. Four days later, i was driving on the expressway when the lights on the console flashed and the car lost all power including anit-lock brakes and powersteering. I coasted to the side of the road and the car wouldn't restart. I then called a tow truck and had the car towed to taylor jeep. After checking out the car, the services department couldn't find anything wrong. The car started fine. I explained that there was obviously something wrong if the car shut down, and to please continue looking. Taylor jeep ended up replacing the starter?! on march 23, 1999, i was driving on the expressway, and again, the lights flashed on the console and the car lost all power. I pulled to the side of the road and the car wouldn't restart. I had the vehicle towed back to taylor jeep. This time they repaired the ignition switch in the steering column. Then on march 31, 1999 while driving on the expressway, the exact same problem occured. I again had the car towed to taylor jeep. This time they didn't find anything to fix. I picked up the car after 5 days. After the last incident, i didn't have any problems with the car until october 20, 1999. While accelerating onto the expressway, going about 40mph, the lights flashed on the console and the car shut down. It restarted after about 20 minutes. I drove it to taylor jeep and this time they sent it to taylor chevrolet. After testing, they were unable to find anything wrong with the car.

Contacted dealer and they advised of the evaporative purge solenoid and charcoal canister needed replacement as carbon monoxide was leaking. We have a warranty and they report it is not covered under the warranty. If gm had to replace the same parts in many of their other cars then why not this vehicle. The cadillacs, buicks, cutlass and over 400,000 vehicle they should recall this problem in the cavalier at no cost to the owner of the vehicle. We just purchased the vehicle a few months ago and purchased the warranty for 1,000.00. The dealer said it is not covered.my daughter purchased her first vehicle just a few months ago, and now it has a problem that they say she will needs to pay for. I think that this problem should be covered under the warranty we purchased and should be recalled just like the other vehicles were at no cost to the owner. Noise heard over bumps due to misaligned exhaust/heat shield.

Emmission control system failed.

Driving down the road, motor stops running and i lost all power both steering and electrical.got it to the side of the road.waited 2 minutes and started it back up it was fine.only did this 2 times within a week period. Engine idle rough since i purchased it in 1998.took it in and they said they could not find anything.came back several times they essentially said thay could do nothing thats just how they run. Motor surges and lags after start up.regardless of temperature.push pedal motor bogs down and then it will take off.replaced almost every sensor under the hood problem is still present. Battery took a dump at almost 4 years. Engine spun #3 and #4 bearings on a cold start up.they advised me that i needed a water pump at the same time.passpower window was always slow.replaced approx mid 2002 rear suspension clunks and sounds like it has lumber in the trunk. Wheel studs snap easily as i have replace approximately 10. Rear brakes drag and grab even after replacement. Front brakes wear excessively. Rubber muffler hanger wears out. Replaced 2 times.

After listening to a squeek noise from trunk area proceed to a clunking noise, i took vehicle in for service. Was advised by dealer that rear strut and it's mount had failed requiring both to be replaced at a cost of over $800.i feel the failure of this assembly to be a manufacturers defect. Muffler failed prematurely. Water pump failed prematurley. Starting to think 1996 cavalier was not engineered very well.

Consumer states while driving was unable to stop, there were no brakes, also vehicle would make loud sounds and then stall, consumer was always being told by delaership that it was a sensor and the fuel filter which was always being replaced, but never resolved the problem, however it was finally determined by a manager at the chevrolet shop that the manufacturer programmed the air conditioner to be on at all times, which caused these malfunctions as well as burning out the carburetor, the manager fixed the dial so the a/c would not be on, but still informed consumer that it needed to be properly reprogrammed, consumer has not experienced the failures since the dial was readjusted, consumer has obtained legal represenation and feels she should not be held financially responsible for something that the manufacuter created.

Replaced the automatic transmission with a remanufactured one.alsothe hood release/abs brakes and air conditioner failed.

Consumer states it took four years before anyone could determine what was causing vehicle to lose all power casuing consumer not to be able to stop, driving several feet with the abs light on, the dealer finally discovered that the a/c and the compressor were programmed by the manufacturer to be on at all times, adversely affecting the compressor, brakes, and power, and the mechanic found a way to get the a/c and compressor to stay off, causing the problems to cease.jb

Consumer states while driving was unable to stop, there were no brakes, also vehicle would make loud sounds and then stall, consumer was always being told by delaership that it was a sensor and the fuel filter which was always being replaced, but never resolved the problem, however it was finally determined by a manager at the chevrolet shop that the manufacturer programmed the air conditioner to be on at all times, which caused these malfunctions as well as burning out the carburetor, the manager fixed the dial so the a/c would not be on, but still informed consumer that it needed to be properly reprogrammed, consumer has not experienced the failures since the dial was readjusted, consumer has obtained legal represenation and feels she should not be held financially responsible for something that the manufacuter created.

The car is falling apart, interior is falling apart, example seat belts on the driver's side is not in tact, the passenger chair on the right side frame is broken, air conditioner has gone outand we needed to install a new airconditioner, the brakes have been replaced twice already, i guess every nine months the car needs a new brake change, the chrysler credit corp has never given us a receipt on how much more to pay and when we call them up, they would not tell us how much more to go for the payments,they also know that since we purchased this car from the very first day this vehicle has been in and out of the shop for repairs.then they would change constantly where the payment should go.i just wished they would stop that.it is like a house loan, we have changed mortagager four times and this is getting very stressful.can you please help us with this matter.

My car was programmed by the manufacturer to have the a/c on at all times.so, during the last five years, my a/c was always on, unbeknownst to me.this caused the compressor to malfunction this fall.that's when the problem with the car finally revealed itself, and a mechanic at don ringler's chevrolet finally figured out that the a/c needed to be reprogrammed so that it was not on at all times.meanwhile, all during the five years, the brakes kept failing at various times, causing me to nearly crash or run out into traffic.many times i was bruised from the incidents.my car also stopped running altogether several times while operating at different speeds, and just as the power would shut off, the brakes would stop working.i have gone out into the middle of highways, almost being killed.each time i took the car in, i was told that the problem could not be detected or the problem had been resolved.being only the second car in my life (the first one, a geo metro, caused no problems at all), i trusted the verdict each time, and did not know that there was a deeper, underlying problem to report.it took me five years to uncover this.believing the mechanics at chevrolet dealerships each time that the problem had been resolved, i continued to keep careful maintenance on it with the very best quality care.this fall, i was told the same thing, that it was something other than the real source of the problem, and after another $500 and a test drive with the head mechanic where the power failed once again, it was discovered that the a/c was misprogrammed and causing power failure.evidence of this lies in the fact that when the a/c is kept off, the car runs fine.the compressor is ruined.i am concerned that all the other 1996 cavalier complaints (nhtsa) on power/brake failure may be attributable to a/c misprogramming.those customers could not figure out the reason either.a recall may be necessary.please investigate--gm staff is ignoring me.

I am having a very difficult time understanding and obtaining clear information on the 1996 chevrolet cavalier's theft system that came with the car from the factory.something is tripping and i cannot disengage it. I just had to replace a hazard light switch at 61,000 miles.the rear lights did not function.however the inside dash and front lights did work properly.i was having the car towed at the time and he is the one to bring it to my attention.i did call gm and there was a recall on my car and this particular part had been replaced at 29,000 miles.this is too important of a safety issue to have fail again at30,000 miles later.please contact me if you need any further information.thank you!

The headlamps failed. Water entered the front lighting harness located behind the front bumper facia. The water was retained in the harness and caused the corrosion of the splices for the low beam headlamps and drl circuits. The splices were broken by the corrosion, resulting in failure.

I have had reoccurring problems with the lights and the start up light on suspension since the day i purchased the automobile. Everytime i took it in for repair, i got a "cannot duplicate" in the place of repair. I knew nothing of the recall on this items until 6/18/2000, when i was researching other items on the cavalier. I would appreciate getting this repaired as oppossed to "cannot duplicate." i do know the suspension happens far more often than a vehicle this young age should. Thank you.

Guess what, here is another problem for my vehicle gm. (another complaint)we've already spent nearly a $1,000, on this car. Now, taking it to the mechanic again, the had spent a hour and a half looking for now what is the fuel pump that had gone bad. I understand that parts in a vehicle have to be maintained. So when we found this out , we really enjoyed your company's "money making" scheme to have the cavaliers, new fuel pump cost around $500. With a 1 year warranty, other manufacture have lifetime warranties, which we will be replacing with. ( carter, or master). Not including the labor and a customer cannot just replace this pump separately, no you have to purchase the entire module together with the fuel pump!!! usually, it would cost around $80.00-$100.00, for a fuel pump. Horn hasn't been working since vehicle was purchased. Fuse was replaced, but didn't remedy the problem. Dealer clamed that in different weather &temperatures it will not work. Vehicle stalled on 2 different occasions. The fuel tank gauge does not give a proper reading.when it is on 1/4 full,gauge indicates that the tank is empty. More than seven incidents happened.the dealer attemped to fix, and now there is no warranty.also, the dealer cannot duplicate the problem.

I replaced the battery on my 1996 chevrolet cavalier 2.4l with manual transmission about 3 days ago. Today as i was driving to get gas the vehicle started to idle low as if it was not getting enough fuel to the engine. As i came to a stop it got worse and then i check the dash for any indication of malfunction only to see my airbag, check engine, abs, check oil & battery lights flickering. Moments later as i shift into 3rd gear it dies rendering all safety and normal operation of the vehicle nearly impossible. I found it kind of odd that the transmission would give out on me since the car was a 1996.

4 speed automatic transmission forward gears failed, reverse still works.

Automatic transmission malfunction, when engaging transmission into drive it takes several seconds to engage.ttwhen outside air temperature is cold, and consumer backs car out of driveway and put into neutral then drive vehicle does not go into gear for 3-10 seconds, it just sits there or coasts, the engine revs up as yoy step on the gas, then the vehicle jumps into gear, when stopped at a stop sign and then step on the gas vehicle was in drive but it did not go anywhere, the engine reved up and then jumped into gear consumer has been told by dealer that all these vehicle types are like that and it can not be crrected.

At 46k miles, my transmission panel light started going on and off. At 53k miles, a gm dealer read a p1887 tcc release switch circuit malfunction. At 58k miles, the transmission broke at 70 mph on i77 north of charleston wva.the gm dealership in wva found that the pump in the transmission came apart, damaging the clutch and flywheel assembly, replaced the transmission, and billed me.i called gm customer service, they said i was out of warranty, tough luck, no other problems like this have ever been reported. However, i found numerous identical problems in the nhtsa files (see nhtsa bulletin sb049140).i printed a tsb (service bulletin) from a gm dealer in ohio that shows that the transmission pumps installed on cavaliers before 6/96 have had transmission pump seal failures that can lead to the transmission burning up even though the car drives like normal. Since gm admitted in the tsb that cars produced before 6/96 (mine was built 4/96) had a pump problem, and there is no recall on the cavalier transmission, i believe i still should be reimbursed by general motors for the cost of a replacement transmission on my car.the cost from the dealer to replace the transmission was $2,062.70.

After being involved in an automobile accident,brakes stuck and the accelerator stuck to the floor- driverwas unable to stop the automobile. Dealer found that computer code indicated failure of a pump seal in the automatic transmission (4-spd overdrive transmission). Cost to repair will be at least $1,305. Other similar complaints found on the nhtsa site show problems with pumps installed in transmissions prior to june, 1996. Car has only 37,000 miles.

Purchased car in march 96,the strut was replaced about four times .consumer also experienced a tire blow out, dealer advisded her there was nothing they could do, because tire blow out was due to some type of objectthat punctured tire, also air condition went out twice, starter was replaced, torque convertor replaced, and a recall on piston pin, consumer feels that manufacturer should take some type of responsbiilty since this a brand new vehicle.

While driving on a back road between 25-30 mph vehicle started pulling to left. Thisresultedin the vehicle crashing into an embankment.upon impact, the vehicle turned around and went backwards 15 yards. The vehicle was totaled. The driver had to climb out of the window to exist the vehicle. The police officer indicated that this occurred due to an equipment failure.the axle broke on the rear passenger wheel.

While driving 60 mph the rear axle fell off, causing driver to have a major crash. The vehicle was totalled. This happened without warning.

Clutch gets replaced every 26 k miles, manu claims normal wear (no other i ever had need a new clutch that often).

While shifting the transmission, the clutch gave out on the third gear.

Was driving and car lost power and smoke come out of car. Took to dealer, he said that clutch fluid was overfilled not kept right clutch,has damage and needs to be replaced.

My ets off light and my check engine light has been illuminated for the past 10 months. The code 1810, which is the tcc switch, has shown when my car has been scanned. My car has been seen by several mechanics . The switch has been replaced twice and it did not solve the problem. The mechanics told me that i needed a new transmission. I had a new transmission put in. The lights came back on which caused my car not to shift properly.all the mechanics that have looked at my car said that getting a new transmission would fix the problem. Which it has not. What can you recommend i do. Do i have to pay for this transmission even though it hasn't fixed anything? also this problem happened shortly after my warranty expired.

This is in regard to the placement of the seat belts in the back seat of the cavalier. When used in conjuction with infant car seats.all the infant seat manufacturers have issued warnings against using any of their seats with cars where the seat belt is anchored forwardat the crease, which is the case with the 96 cavelier.i was told to contact my vehicle manufacturer, who then told me to talk to the seat manufacturer, getting me no where at all.indeed the only advice i could get was to tighten it as much as i could and it would probably be alright.there are no probability nor shouldthere be when we deal with the life of a child.i find it absolutely unacceptable that there is no way to safely transport my child due to the anchoring of the belt.i can't afford to go and buy a new car.it's bad enough that in the cavalier infant cannot be placed in the middle of the rear seat due to the hump.but on top of this, to place the seat belts so that no seat will work as they were meant to.there is no excuse for this.

Wheel studs snap easily as i have replace approximately 10. Rear brakes drag and grab even after replacement. Front brakes wear excessively. Rubber muffler hanger wears out. Replaced 2 times.

The drivers side seat belt failed, the plastic part which is attached to the metal tongue of the belt snapped off making the seat belt unable to hold position after fastening.nlm

The contact owns a 1996 chevrolet cavalier. The contact stated that while driving approximately 25 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and failed to respond without warning. When brakes are applied they engage and release which causes extended stopping distance. The vehicle stops when the brake pedal is slammed on, which engages the abs. The dealership has checked the brake rotors , pads, all components in the front suspensionand tires. They we fine. The cause of the failure is still unknown.

Applied brakes at about 2 or 3 mph and did not stop.

Two times in the last year, the anti-lock brakes on our 1996 chevrolet cavalier have malfunctioned and caused us to rearend other vehicles.both times after slamming down on the brakes, the car would almost come to a complete stop and then would jut forward 2-3 times and hit the car in front of us.after the first accident, we took the car to a mechanic, and he told us he could not find anything wrong with the anti-lock brakes.we thought that possibly it was just a one time occurrence and maybe there would not be continuing problems with the brakes, but then in the latest accident, our car behaved in the same manner.this time we sustained severe damage and the car was totaled.luckily, no one was injured in either accident, probably because both times the accidents occured at very low speeds.we would like to know if other owners of 1996 chevrolet cavaliers have had similar problems with their anti-lock brakes.thank you.

Rear brake system shakes and lurches...wheels lock up and release...car skids for short periods of time causing car to attempt to run off roadway...this happens most often in wet conditions. Dt:the consumer stated he bought a car on 6-29-05 from klick lewis inc. On his way home when he applied the brakes,suddenly the car felt like it was coming apart. He called the dealer where he bought the car and they told him the vehicle needed front rotors. On friday 7-15-05; before he had taken it in to have the rotors put on, he noticed the car was full of smoke. He called the fire dept. And they came out and diffused the fire and told him that it was an electrical problem and the car could have caught on fire. He then called the salesperson that sold him the car and they said they would have someone get back to him. He has made 5 telephone calls to them and no one has returned his calls.

This car shuts off while driving like the gm cars being mentioned in the news today. Started in 2005 and was evaluated by multiple mechanics including a chevrolet dealership that kept it over a month. It doesn't show a code when it happens. It randomly shuts off while you are driving (varied speeds). It also randomly won't start. The steering started very gradually and we did not know what was wrong. It got so bad before we had to repair it that you could not steer at all to the left. When i approached the dealership and asked them to help with the cost of the repair they said know. After the repair wa completed i talked ot the mechanic at the dealership that performed the repair and he indicated that he replaces this on a lot of gm vehicles including cavaliers. I am requesting that gm be made aware of this serious problem and put a campaign together to repair any vehicle including my own with parts and labor costs.

I have had reoccurring problems with the lights and the start up light on suspension since the day i purchased the automobile. Everytime i took it in for repair, i got a "cannot duplicate" in the place of repair. I knew nothing of the recall on this items until 6/18/2000, when i was researching other items on the cavalier. My ets off light and my check engine light has been illuminated for the past 10 months. The code 1810, which is the tcc switch, has shown when my car has been scanned. My car has been seen by several mechanics . The switch has been replaced twice and it did not solve the problem. The mechanics told me that i needed a new transmission. I had a new transmission put in. The lights came back on which caused my car not to shift properly.all the mechanics that have looked at my car said that getting a new transmission would fix the problem. Which it has not. What can you recommend i do. Do i have to pay for this transmission even though it hasn't fixed anything? also this problem happened shortly after my warranty expired.

In april 2002 i received a letter from teh recall information processing center, royal oak, mi in regards to a defect with the ignition switch. When i checked the internet"nhtsa"i found out that in fact this was not the only recall on my car. The is also an airbag, check engine light and mud flip kit recall. I contacted the dealer and brought my car in to repair all these defects. The next day the check engine light came on again and the car was running rough again. I contacted the dealership and reported the problem. I was told that this has nothing to do with the recall and that the recall for the "check engine light" was fixed the day before and i have to pay if i want to find out what is causing that light to come on. I am not satisfied at all. First of all, i was never contacted in regards to all these other recalls. I have problems with my car everysince around the middle of 2002. When i drive and take my foot of the gas pedal the car keeps going the same speed without slowing down, sometimes it even speeds up. The engine check light keeps coming on and the engine runs real rough. Also when driving the car keeps jerking, like somebody is hitting the brakes and then speeds ups right afterwards. The left rear wheel came off of the car without warning while traveling.driver lost control of vehicle and the vehicle overturned several times and was totalled.driver was injured. No other passengers in car.

Approx. 1 month ago, the car began to "knock" and shake very badly.i drove it to a repair shop near my home, where it was diagnosed with 5 broken bolts in the front driver's side wheel. This was fixed. Yesterday (7/24/02), at approx. 12:00 noon,i was driving with my children northbound on route 18 in east brunswick, nj, when the car began to knock and shake again, and my front passenger side wheel just fell off. Luckily, due to traffic conditions, i was in the right laneand not travelling very fast (@ 20-25 mph). Luckily, i was right at the entrance to a mobil station when it happened, and the wheel rolled into their parking lot; i found the pieces of the bolts that were broken all around the parking lot.the wheel caused a small amount of damage to the back of a car (a backup sensor was broken) that was in the lot.this damage was around $200; the cost to put my wheel back on, and for all new bolts on that wheel was about $100. There is also damage to my passenger side fender, for which i have not gotten an estimate for, my husband is guessing about $700; could i furnish you with an exact estimate at a later date? additionally, upon puttingthe wheel back on, they discovered damage to the "u-joint".we transfered the car to our own mechanic to have this problem addressed; i will have more receipts, probably tomorrow. I am also having the mechanic replace the bolts and lugnuts on both rear wheels - i strongly feel that there must be something wrong with these bolts for them to keep breaking like this.
