The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet captiva. The contact stated that the front passenger side air bag off warning indicator illuminated with an occupant present. The vehicle was driven; however, the failure persisted. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the air bag sensor would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 45,000.

The air bag service light has gone off indicating that it can either not inflate in an accident or it can inflate on it's own. I feel this is a serious safety hazard that cannot be prevented by proper maintainence of the vehicle. This vehicle only has 49k miles on it.

The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet captiva. While the vehicle was stationary, the air bag indicator illuminated without warning. The contact stated that the air bag indicator displayed "service air bag". The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 81,000.

Vehicle driven in high traffic area when without warning slowly lost all power and stalled in the middle of the street. Initial attempt to start vehicle failed. After several more attempts the vehicle started only to gradually lose power and stalled again. Able to roll vehicle off main street onto side street and called aaa. While waiting for aaa i disconnected both positive and negative battery cables waited 10 minutes and reconnected. Vehicle started but when moved it again lost power and stalled. Aaa arrived and the vehicle started and was driven onto the flatbed. The vehicle was towed to my home and when the operator attempted to drive the vehicle off the flat bed it would not start. After several attempts the operator was able to start and drive vehicle off the flat bed. We have not driven the car since we are unable to determine the cause of the problem. This situation could have had a tragic ending had i been hit during this vehicle malfunction.

Radio goes off when using the turn signals and sometimes does not come back on. Headlights dim when open/close windows, dash board lights flicker, parking break service lightgoes on/off randomly, car is completely dead when you try to restart it and the key gets stuck in the ignition. Sometimes car will restart other times it needs to be jumped to start it. Battery positive post is hot to the touch even though carwas dead for over 24 hrs.

My captiva did not want to start.the key was locked in the ignition.all the lights were off and there was no lights on the instrument panel.i disconnected the negative battery cable for a minute and then plugged it back on to the battery.when i went to open the door the horn started honking and all the lights came on.i deactivated the alarm with the remote on the key but accidently hit the lock button.i stated the vehicle and went to close the hood. But when i went to open the door the doors had locked and my vehicle was running.i had to break the window because myyear old baby was in the car.my wife complained that the radio will some times turn off and the instrument lights will come on.one is the traction control need to be serviced and engine light will come on.alsothe service light will turn on.also the lights inside the vehicle will dim at times.my wife also complained that the vehicle will stall on her and shut off on her once.she was in the parking lot of the church when the vehicle stalled and stopped on her. I have read forums and customer complaints of other captiva suv's having the same problem.ones suggesting that its the battery cables. Please investigate the problem because it could be a real problem if these vehicles start to stall on busy highways.regards [xxx]parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).' *pm

Key won't come out of ignition, car in park, running lights on. This is the 2nd occurance. Gm charged me $250 to fix it in september despite my protest that, as demonstrated by all the complaints, this is a design flaw!!!

The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet captiva. The contact stated that after turning the ignition switch off and back on, the vehicle lost power and the service traction control and the abs skid lights illuminated. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 50,000.

Problems started with radio going off. Then lights dimming when using the window switch. Then while using the turning signal, the cruse would shut off. Then driving at night the lights started flickering then seemed to turn off. The car seemed to loose power.the break light would come on then go off. The seat belt lightand check engine.the warning bell that sounds while the key is in ignition would go off andmessages would flash across the radio and the information on the dash would scroll with out you scrolling them.today the car decelerated in a busy intersection and the car locks went up and down. On the way home, the car was dead and i could not remove the key. Called a tow, they jumped the car, it started. On the way to the repair garage, the car died in the road.called for a second tow, but was able to start the car by hitting the external fuse box. Got it to the garage and it is there today.

The e-brake comes on by its self while driving down road.checked againest vin and stated not on recall list but others have been recalled for same thing.

While driving on interstate highway 40 in ok at 70 mph the vehicle starting doing strange things. At first every time you enabled the turn signal it would disengage the cruise control. Approximately 45 minutes later the brake light came on and then a message appeared stating a fault with the traction control and then within a few more minutes the engine fault light came on, then the radio went off and the clock display went away. We pulled off the highway at a mcdonald's and when i turned the vehicle off i could not remove the key from the ignition. Everything electrical would not operate and the vehicle would not start. At this point we decided to have breakfast before calling a tow service. When we finished with breakfast we returned to the vehicle and it started. The engine fault light was still on for a few miles and then went out and every think worked properly for the remaining 1000 miles of the trip to pa.. The next day i searched the internet to find some info on this problem. There were many 2012 captive owners complaining about the same problem. It appears to be something with the battery cabling. The only thing that appeared to resolve the problem was changing out the cabling to the battery or adding an additional ground cable from the battery to the engine.

My captiva has approx 40,000 miles on it, it randomly will not start, the first time this happened i called aaa, then while waiting for triple aaa, i tried it again and it turned on. It randomly happens and when i put the key in the ignition, i cannot get the key out and it gets stuck. This has happened multiple times. Also, the radio randomly doesn't work or, randomly all the stations are changed, the remote key opener doesn't work when all this is happening as well.in 2015 the ac was not working, it took three different repair shops to finally fix it, the battery has also been replaced.this morning the key got locked in, never returned to being able to start.when i calleddealership to tell them i'm having it towed in theysaid the car has to be showing the "symptoms" before they can do anything about it, so today since it never went back to normal and the key is still stuck in ignition i am having it towed in.i'm assuming its electrical related, i sure hope theair bags aren't affected by all this, it's bad enough never knowing if the car's going to start or not.

Have owned the car less than 1 year, it has 57000 on it..started with turning signal disengaging the cruise control.then lights coming on the dash and the radio going off.then havingignition chime coming on and the car slowinglike it would stall. Door locks going up and down and the car feel like it would stall,it finally died in a parking lot. Could not remove the key form the ignition.got to the dealer.. Changed a fuse box under the hood. . two days later, itjust stoppedbut i had electric to restart. Towed again.gm dealer was great at trying to fix this.replaced a modual in the console of the car by shifting lever.car was great for 3 days, then check engine light came on, went off, parking break light came on and radio went off.. Then battery light came on and was registering low voltage.it is still at the gm dealer, they have had it hooked up to the computer for 3 days and can not find the cause..nice car to drive when it is running, but not reliable...

My 2012 chevy captiva sport shuts off while i'm driving it! my radio turns off and on, so does my a/c. My key gets stuck in the ignition, all dashboard lights come on, dies completely. We've replaced the battery quite a few times within a two year period. It is not the battery. We took it in to a certified chevy dealership for diagnostic test which ended up with zero results. Supposedly the cause of these issues cannot be found. My car has died out on me while i'm driving! i need answers or suggestions a.s.a.p. Gm is not being cooperative. I am so scared to drive my only car!

Stabilitrak service light came on yesterday. Then this morning, the parking brake service light. Anytime i applied the brake, my shifter would click loudly. Anytime i went over 20 mph, the care would rev like it was having a lot of trouble shifting. Twice it wouldn't go right away even if i was hard or easy on the gas and i almost got hit from behind in traffic. The d symbol on dash would even flicker. This car has had so many electrical problems, i do not understand why there isn't further recalls!

While driving the car, the radio will shut off & all lights on radio will go out. After some time approx. 3 to 15 minutes the radio will come back on by itself. The air conditioner fan would be blowing on high and suddenly drop to a low setting and then come back on in a few about about 20 sec. These problems became simultaneous along with the emergency brake indicator light coming on, both the red & amber emergency indicator light. The dealership called me and said there were bulletins written on this problem. They told me the fix is a newalternator and all new battery cables all the way around, would fix the problem. The cost would be $990.i have just finished paying $776 for an air conditioning tensioner belt installation because the engine was shaking significantly and making loud noises.the entire front of the engine needed to be disassembled for access. My car has 45,306 miles on it and it alsorequired a transmission at 30,000 miles, which gm installed free. I am convinced the electrical sub system in this car is of poor design.

The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet captiva. While driving 70 mph, the vehicle stalled and the check engine warning indicator illuminated. The contact stated that the failure occurred a number of times in the past and the vehicle would not start until the next day. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer (cooper chevrolet buick, 1300 s quintard ave, anniston, al, 36201), but they were unable to duplicate and diagnose the failure. The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet captiva. While making a right turn at 30 mph, all the lights on the instrument cluster illuminated. In addition, the radio and the heating system failed to function as temperature below 40 was displayed across the message board. In addition, the contact had to manually open the doors in order to enter the vehicle. The vehicle also failed to start as the theft alarm independently activated and the emergency brake failed to release. The vehicle was towed to a dealer who diagnosed that a theft module melted and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

The car will not start, key is stuck in the ignition. We have jumped it numerous times and for no reason the car will not start again.the battery was good, had it checked.4th time since the start of 2016. Right now there is no, power , i can't even get the indoor lights on. It is going back to the mechanic. The car was stationary, (in my car port).

Vehicle is put in park and i try to turn the key to off position but the key will not turn to off position so key can be removed.furthermore, gm knows about the problem and has failed to place my model on the recall list according to inquires that i have made. I also have an extended warranty, protective asset that was purchased from purchase dealer, but they will not cover just the ignition switch.i need gm to issue a recall on my model, chevy captiva.

I have read several complaints about chevy captivas online today as i was searching for an answer for why my car died on me twice while driving home this evening. Once was on a hill turning onto the road before my home and the second time was pulling into my apartment complex. If i was on the highway or there was a car coming over the hill i could have been injured in an accident. Lately the parking break and check engine lights have been coming on and going off, also i've had times when i'd go to start my vehicle it would act as if the battery was dead. The battery was replaced a year to year and a half ago so i don't suppose that's the problem. Also the dashboard lights often flicker. With all of the complaints on these problems i feel there is something really wrong with the captiva and a recall should be issued to address the problems due to safety concerns. I have three children and i don't want to worry about my car dying while driving them to or from daycare and school and us getting in an accident.

The vehicle was turned on and we started driving and then car it acted like it was going to die out, and we shut the vehicle off and turned it back on again. Then after we were driving the carit stopped and locked up all the doors keys nothing worked as we were driving right in the middle of the intersection. The police and tow truck were called and the tow truck driver got the key out of the ignition and he got the vehicle to start again. Then we drove to a nearby gas station and it completely shut off again when we were entering the gas station while driving the vehicle. We only had the vehicle for 4 days until it did all this while driving. The tow truck driver took it back to the dealership where it came from. It was at the dealership for 5 days from the 15th of july went the tow truck brought it there until the dealership told us it was ok to come pick the vehicle back up on july 20th.they explain to us that they could find nothing wrong with the vehicle as to why this all happened.if it happens again to bring it back.

Parking light comes on and radio turns off except for the clock, then turns back on. Check engine light came one, went off when high beams turned on.using the turning signal disables the cruise control.today on the way to work, the battery light comes on after the check engine light goes off.checking the volts on the dash and it shows they are low.car has been traveling for 25 minutes, so alternator should have charged battery.get to work and the volts are back up to 13.8but battery light still on.this is one week after the car just stopped ( in the road) and nothing worked and the key was stuck in the ignition.car repair replaced fuse box under the hood then a modual in the console.car was great for 5 days, now new issues happening and some of the old ( radio and cruse)car has 56000 miles.

The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet captiva. While starting the vehicle, the key failed to release from the ignition switch and the turn signal lights failed to make a clicking noise when activated. Additionally, the vehiclefailed to start occasionally and the service vehicle and brake warning indicators were illuminated. The local dealer was not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and did not assist. The failure mileage was 84,000. The vin was unknown.

One day my heat and air module just quit working and the dash board reads -40 for the outside temp.so now there is no heat no defrost or air.

Car was driving fine went into a store came out keyless entry would not work, opened door with key and car would not start.called for a jump but before the person came the car started out of the blue. I never attempted to start the car again but had inadvertently left the switch to the on position. I took the car into good chevrolet for service and was told that my car's brains were basically scrambled.i was told that the pcm, bank 1 sensor 2 oxygen sensors were replaced and that all codes were cleared and that the repair was verified.i pick the car up on 8/14/14 drove it on 8/15/14 and the same thing happened again only this time the key would not come out of the ignition and all power was lost.again i sat there and waited and about 15-20 minutes later the car started. This time the car show additional issues.the lights where the rpms are shown flickers on and off, the car sputters, trying to get up to a certain speed is taxing and when i put the car in reverse there is a rattling coupled with a squealing sound.today is 8/16/14 and i will be taking the car back into good chevrolet once again for service.i can only hope that they will repair the car this time and that i do not have some major issue after the warranty period as there is clearly something wrong within the car's electrical or computer components.

Key will not turn in when inserted into tumbler.steering wheel locked, shifter locked.key occasionally cannot be removed from ignition switch.vehicle stationary.problem happens intermittently;sometimes when vehicle has been driven; sometimes when vehicle has been parked for a short time (5-10 minutes); sometimes when vehicle has been parked overnight.makes no difference if vehicle is level or on a grade (up or down.)safety issue if keys cannot be removed.safety issue if vehicle cannot to started.

However, the dealer was not certain that the diagnostic test located the correct failure code. The vehicle was not repaired.the manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was 28,359.

This car has so many electrical codes when tested. I have had numerous problems and haven't even had the car a year. Why hadn't gm did a recall on these cars. Please help all of us who have this car. I have 3 kids and would like a answer to why there isnt a recall with so many of the same complaints!

Intermittentlythen panel lights come on (traction control, check engine lights) turn signal lights work, . You lose power to car and cannot even take the key out of the ignition. After some time, you can finally get the key out. Sometimes it's minutes, sometimes it's hours. This started happening a few weeks ago, happening few times a week. Now, it's happening daily, even few times a day. We found a chevy forum online and shockingly this is happening to 2012 captiva's. Why is this not a recall? this can be fatal to lose power to the car if we are on the highway and lose function of the vehicle. Sometimes while driving, sometimes when i go to start the car nothing happens and i can't get the key out of the ignition.

While driving down the freeway in rush hour traffic, vehicle lost power stranding me in the middle of the freeway.

The parking brake keeps on going on well driving, electrical problems and fuel pump not working properly.

At rush hour , the dash lights come on and the car stops dead.no power at all. We were able to get it off the road, but it was dark and with no electrical working, could not use the flashers.was almost hit several times by uncaring drivers.even yelled at.no power to the car at all.

The key will not turn to off position in the ignition after the engine is turned off.it started not turning to off position sometimes but now it is every time. My dealer says that there is not a recall on the model that i own, the chevrolet captiva, 2012. Online research shows that other captiva owners have the same problems.please help with this problem, because i am afraid that the system also may have the other problems that causes the engine to switch off automatic.

The contact owns a 2012 chevrolet captiva. The contact stated that the key was jammed in the ignition. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The dealership was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 94,934. Updated 10/26/16*lj

Bought less than a month ago. Put key in, acts like a dead battery. Cannot take key out of ignition. Took battery to be checked battery is fine. Had to jump start it twice. No reason why it's been so random both times car was parked less than an hour.

My most recent problem with my 2012 chevy captiva is the key was getting jammed in ignition and would not release immediately.this went on for approximately two weeks or more.i took vehicle in for replacement of brakes on 2/17/15. On 2/18/15, later in the night, the key would not release from ignition at all.i have vehicle at dealer as of 2/20/15 to diagnose the problem and awaiting the results.i am concerned that this is the same gm problem with ignition switch for other models that are being "recalled."also just for the record, i did experience a problem with transmission that needed to be replaced under warranty as well back in 2014; and problem with alternator back in 2013 also had to be replaced under warranty.i also notice some hesitation in acceleration, (similar to a slight/faint pull) on occasions.not enough to think anything serious, but did occur often enough in 2014.

Ignition locks up and will not allow you to start car.cannot remove key.cannot turn key. Cannot move shifter.car is always in a lot when it happens. Called road service once.have since purchased a battery booster.the booster is not needed to start car.just touch cables to battery posts and dash lights up and car will start wityh its own battery which is new.now beginning to happen several times a day.

I purchased the captiva after my van was totaled, in feb 2017, problems started in april, car would die, everywhere, drs office, grocery store, driveways, library, restaurants, rain, snow, day or night. Could not take key out, gear froze in park, no electrical working at all, at 1st car would start after a while, then it would not, called aaa, no 1 could figure out what the problem was, i have spent $453.00 with no results, used up my free calls from aaa plus. Every mechanic had a different reason for the problem. Bought car at a carfax...they said they could do nothing....took car to chevy dealer, they could do nothing as they had not sold that many captivas, would check it for $500.00. I wrote to chevrolet to tell them of the problem, was told very nicely that it was my fault because i hadnot taken the car into a dealership sooner. They could do nothing, i could pay the $500.00 maybe with no results. I know what the problem is...1 of the mechanics said there was something wrong with the left hand node on the battery..now i start the car by hitting the red plastic cover!!! i am a 84 yrs old f, live alone & work. So for the rest of my life i will be doing this to start the car. Have had gma & chevy cars all my life, i will tell all my family (20) never buy gm. I cannot even sell this lemon even if i could afford it. I am reporting this to the bbb and to consumer protection.

I bought this car in february. In march the radio started going off and on sometimes when blinker is turned on sometimes not. Traction light comes on for no reason. One day just started acting like battery was going dead. Turned it off could not get key out of egnition.had it tolled to chevy said it was my battery. 400.00 hundred for that trip .that was the 4th time in shop in two monthes. This is the third battery in 4 years. Had it replaced in april. It started the same thing last week radio, lights go dim, tonight get home again key stuck in egnition.the same things i have read about happening to other captiva . My husband read on other site to move election seats up and down and key would come out he tried it and it worked. I have had the car in the shop more then i have drove it. I bought the extra warranty but it didn't help. One mechanic said it could be the battery cable in which the extra warranty does not cover cost for cable is 600.00. Just spent 400.00 on battery.this seems to be a big problem with this car. I wish i would have looked at consumer reveiws. 13,00.00 dollar mistake. Back in the shop and depending on a ride again! oh and extra warranty not worth it still had to pay to have car tolled to shop ,and to have it analysised. Should have bought a ford.

On 1/2/19, i left work and traveled approximately 2 miles when i began hearing engine noise.upon pulling into convenience store, i checked dipstick and found no oil showing.since oil was changed about 400 prior and no leaks were found, i proceeded to add oil to engine.found oil leaking out as fast as putting in.after being towed back to where i work (independent repair shop) and next day found rear crankshaft seal on engine dislodged from engine.further investigation and taking it to chevrolet dealership verified the occurrence of a known problem with the pcv causing this failure to happen..apparently as i drove up that busy highway from work, my vehicle was dispersing a very fiine spray of oil on the vehicles following me, the road, and the roadside vegetation, approximately 5 quarts worth.this created a very unsafe condition for the vehicle following me and raised some serious environmental issues.in spite of gm having issued a special policy on certain vehicles which would have covered this repair, i was told my vehicle was not on the list.i have had the repair performed, but if it is a known faulty design, gm should stand behind correcting the issue and if i am not on their list, they should expand the list.i hate having been the vehicle behind creating an unsafe situation for other drivers and for contaminating the road and roadside with petroleum waste. The special policy that did not have me on the list was 14882 - special coverage adjustment

I purchased this vehicle on march 2, 2018. Within 3 months of owning this vehicle, it has had a catalytic converter replaced (within the first 2 weeks).on june 11, 2018, the vehicle cut off and would not restart. I had it towed to a repair shop where it was diagnosed with a broken timing chain. The vehicle had about 95,000 miles on at the time. I purchased it with 92,500 on it.a week and a half later i had to return the vehicle for another repair with the valves dealing with the timing belt. The vehicle is now back in the shop and has been diagnosed with an engine camshaft/exhaust problem due to it cutting off while driving. The vehicle cut off at least 9 times while driving in traffic.

At rush hour , the dash lights come on and the car stops dead.no power at all. We were able to get it off the road, but it was dark and with no electrical working, could not use the flashers.was almost hit several times by uncaring drivers.even yelled at.no power to the car at all.

Noticed the vehicle was burning oil at a high rate. Took it into the dealership and they stated this is a "known" problem with chevy captiva's, that the oil burning will melt the pistons into the parts but the extended warranty did not cover it. Located bulletin 13-06-01-003f-excessive engine oil consumption under the gm website but they state it doesn't cover my vin#. If this is a known problem by gm how can it select which vehicles to fix.

Check engine light continues to come on.had it tested and i needed to replace the camshaft and the crankshaft sensors.did that drove it for a week or two and the light came back on tested it again and got the same reading concerning bank 1 camshaft and crankshaft sensor.was told it could be the timing chain causing this problem and that this vehicle is known for the timing chain issue.was told that there may be more than one camshaft but the reading still comes up the same in bank 1.is this normal for this vehicle and is it under some kind of warranty.have only 104200 miles on this vehicle.

After a few attempts, the vehicle was able to restart; however, the failure recurred. In addition, the transmission would disengage or display a fuel pump error. The manufacturer was not contacted or made aware of the failures. The failure mileage was approximately 48,000.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the failure was repaired. No further information was available. The manufacturer was notified of the failures. The vin was not available.

This car is having transmission problems. Driving steady between 30-45mph the transmission will jerk like the torque converter is having problems. During slow speed driving such as a traffic jam < 20mph the car will jerk into gears. During slow speeds of about 10mph if i step on the gas the car lags, nosedives a little, and then takes off. Generally shifting is very jerky.

The e-brake comes on by its self while driving down road.checked againest vin and stated not on recall list but others have been recalled for same thing.

Ignition don't turn to the off position sticks in acc you have to restart vehicle and move steering wheel back and forth then try to turn car off again

Quite often, when i drive through a puddle, i loose my power steering for several seconds. This makes turning very difficult and sometimes scary. This has happened to me many times, today being the most recent.

After starting the captiva the key will not come out of the ignition. The captiva is in park and stationary in the driveway. I have had this issue for quite some time. In the past i was able to get the key out when i restarted the captiva and shifted from park to reverse to neutral and back to park and the key released. But not this time, no matter how many times i repeated the above tactic.

I was on my way to work on highway 1 south toward harrisburg ar and i started smelling smoke and noticed it coming from vents. After i got out of my car , flames engulfed and totaled my car completely.

One day my heat and air module just quit working and the dash board reads -40 for the outside temp.so now there is no heat no defrost or air.

I got into my car and closed the door. I don't recall if i had put the key into the ignition yet, when i heard a loud "boom" sound like that of a explosion. I turned around and looked at my rear window there was about a 1 foot whole and the remainder of the window is shattered waiting to cave in.i got out and looked, the force blew the molding off on the left side of the window and it and multiple pieces of shattered glass were on the ground. My neighbors and i just stood there and looked because we had never seen anything like that before. Thankfully i had not pulled off yet, and no one was injured.

I was driving, going around 60 mph on the highway 684 towards white plains, ny.heard a very loud sound, raised my eyes slightly upward to the right to discover my sunroof shattered.some of it fell into the car leaving a hole . The glass remaining, looked as though there was a pressure build up inside of the car because it is raised towards the roof of the car.i now worried that once i get the roof repaired, this may happen again.luckily, the glass that fell into the car did not come down on my head, which could have caused me to lose control of the car.

The vehicle is lightweight to the point where high winds push the car to the side while it is in motion. You can feel the wind moving it and feel the car move a lot when other vehicles are driving at high speeds next to it.
