Intermittent failure of ignition. Have had car towed numerous times caused by failure of ignition to work. Car would then start, then fail to start. Please consider adding the camaro ss 2001 to the gm ignition switch failure recall. I am afraid to drive the car now, having heard a faulty gm ignition switch has caused engines on certain gm cars to fail while car is moving, resulting in 13 fatalities. The first incident date of my car's failure to start is approximate; the problem goes back several years. Approximately six months ago, i had the car towed to my dealership after it refused to start at a nearby stop. The dealership inspected my ignition keys and found them okay, but went no further in trying to diagnose the problem. The car failed to start just two weeks ago after i came out of a doctor's appointment, whereupon i had the car towed to my home. The car then decided to start three days later. Then, i saw of the faulty ignition switch recall on the news. I refuse to try to use the car until the situation can be diagnosed by gm or the law.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet camaro. The contact stated that the steering column was not securely connected due to a premature fracture of an internal component which was affecting the steering wheel and the emergency brake lever failed to function. In addition, the contact experienced various electrical outages as the failure progressed. The vehicle was not yet inspected by a dealer and the contact was to check with the manufacturer to determine their recommended solution for a dealer to diagnose and repair the vehicle. The vin was not available. The steering column will not lock into place while driving or before driving on both residential roads and highway settings. As for the brake system, it is the emergency brake handle release the cable wile putting the car in park it will sometimes roll after applying the emergency brake also. The contact requested the complaint be submitted in his verbiage. The failure mileage was not available.
-the contact owns a 2001 chevrolet camry. There was an odd noise at the time of purchase. She was told that the spare tire was loose. The contact was later notified by an independent mechanic that the noise was due to the ball bearings. The estimate to repair the vehicle was $500 per wheel to replace the ball bearings. The electric doors and the heating elements also exhibited failures periodically. The contact stated that there are several electrical failures. The tie rod fractured on the vehicle while driving 30 to 40 mph. The vehicle was driven to the mechanic and they were able to provide a temporary fix, she was able to drive the vehicle. The current mileage was 125,779 and the failure mileage was 113,000.the vin is not available.
While driving at any speed electrical system failed intermittently, causing vehicle to shut off. Dealer stated there was no solution for the problem because they could not find theelectrical short.
Consumer states that last week she could not get into vehicle, because battery was gone.shecalled aaa, and they gave her a jump start, and she drovevehicle to work,it was ok, until she was ready to come home.she had to get another jump.she hadvehicle towed to the dealer, and they could not duplicate the problem.she also stated that aaa told her it looked as through acid was leaking all over battery.shewas afraid to drive vehicle because when she got where she is going it might not bring her back home.

2001 camaro with ls1 engine, having terrible pistion slap issiue due to poor cooling design of cylinders, gm is failing to admit there is a problem with this car. It only has 29000 miles, now i see i am not the only one with this problem....going to try and start a class action law suit. My car needs an engine and gm will not replace at no cost.
2001 camaro ss with ls1 engine, has terrible piston slap that lasts for over 5 minutes, very loud, and has to be causing wear in the cylinders. This is a complaint that many owners seem to have but mine lasts very long and is very loud. People keep asking me what is wrong with my engine as it sounds very bad for the first 5 - 8 minutes especially when colder out.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet camaro.the contact stated that the vehicle was stalling.the cause of failure was diagnosed as a corroded connection of the fuel pump wiring in the tank.the wiring overheated and the insulation had melted as well.the contact repaired the vehicle, but is concerned that other vehicles with this failure could stall or burst into flames in the middle of the road.the current and failure mileages were 67,000.
Problems with vehicle cutting off.*mr the consumer stated when he purchased the vehicle, it died twice as it was being moved on the lot.it was explained as carbon build-up and the fact that the vehicle had been on a truck for a week from another dealer. The motor was pinging and a mechanic stated it was a well known problem with that particular motor, apparently due to a design defect, the outer cylinders did not cool efficiently which resulted in a scorching of the cylinders, rings and pistons, which was the source of the pinging. The consumer dropped the vehicle off at the dealer and after tearing down the motor, it was determined the motor was in need of replacement. The consumer was informed there was a national back order for that particular motor.
The original motor in this vehicle is defective.poor design does not allow the outside cylinders to cool properly resulting in a scorching and breakdown of the piston, rings and cylinder walls.gm is well aware of the problem (and has been for some time) and it is large enough that gm is currently unable to provide enough replacement motors to customers.*la
Consumer stated the lfet side mirror has been fixed four times, the mirrior breaks for no reason. Also car needs oil every 1000 miles.

Dual exhalts have one side blocked off. Dealer notified, and informed consumer that it was manuacturer who had tomeet state specifications.feel free to provide any further details on this matter.
The custom exhuast system installed by the manufacturer (gm) and built by slp engineering was causing the fuel tank in my 2001 camaro to melt.
My baby, a 2001 camaro convertible, 6 cylinder, has had three fuel system issues. I just saw the recall for 2012-13 chevy's for fuel system issues and am hoping someone will look into the 2001 and see if this model should have been sent a recall notice.in approx 2004 on way to military conference my car stalled whiled pulling out from gas station. It had been stalling week prior but was thought to be because of bad gas...it's final stall was of course on the way to a military function where i shouldn't have been late. It was towed to jeff gordan's chevy, wilmington, nc and approx $1400 later i had a new fuel pump and ?? . Ran great again until approx late 2010 or early 2011. Almost got t-boned doing a turn with incoming traffic when my baby stalled as i was driving to the closest mechanic, firestone on gen booth, va beach 23454 after it had been stalling all week-mileage approx 85,000. Once again was told i needed a new fuel pump, approx $1500 we were good to go again. Now, my check engine light came on and the code that came up was a general code for something with fuel system but they need to drop gas tank once again to be able to correctly diagnose prob. I'm hoping someone will look back at 2001 chevy's and see if a recall should have been listed for that yr also.sounds like very similar symptoms. 2 fuel pumps in 6 years seems excessive to me and other mechanics thanks for looking into this. Sfc (ret) [xxx]information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6).
Vehicle refused to start.problem traced to in-tank fuel pump connection which had corroded.potential to spark and start a fire, vehicle might stall suddenly and without warning.
Conditions: temp: approximately 70 degrees f weather: clear with the parking brake applied (firmly) i pressed the release button on parking brake handle and immediately heard a loud pop from the center console and felt a release of tension in the handle.after the noise, the parking brake handle could be moved freely up or down with no resistance to movement (the release button was kept depressed).the vehicle moved forward slightly after the pop noise was heard. I move the handle to the down (off) position and released the button.i then re-applied the parking brake and it operated normally. I called the dealer but since the problem was no longer present they could do nothing (i agree with them).
Transmission is shot, transmission does not change gears. Contacted dealer. And the dealer isnot willingto do anything.
Rear torsion differential pops/creaks/knocks/ticks ... Dealer says it is normal.torsen (manufacturer of unit) says diferential. Is floating in the housing.rear diff. Needs to be repaired/replaced.dealer refuses stating noise is normal.
Consumer states that the vehicle mis-shifts, mechanic stated that there are internal problems with the synchronizers and shifting forks, dealer stated that shifting failures were due to driver error and not a malfunction.

While at standstill vehicle was rearended by another vehicle driving about 5-10 mph.consumer feels seatbelts are defective in vehicle, they did not lock up. No injuries. Damage to vehicle unknown.rear bumper damaged and the consumer wife sustained sprained neck.
Seat belt becoming unbuckled, this has occurred twice now both after being hit by another vehicle once from behind andone impact from the front.

Brakes failed when trying to come to a complete stop at 30 mph.
Disk brake rotors. The disk brake rotors warp so often that they constantly need turned or replaced. I have had them turned at approx 11000 miles and they already need attention again. They make intermitant noise and you can feel the wobble when you go to stop. Looking on the internet this is a very common complaint with this vehicle and the brake rotors.
The contact owns a 2001 chevrolet camaro. The contact wasdriving in rainy weather conditions approximately 65 mph and encountered a bump in the road. Suddenly, the anti-lock brake system and skid control system warning light indicators illuminated. The tires and brakes locked when pressure was applied to the brake pedal causing the vehicle to skid off of the roadway. The contact was able to gain control and continue normal operation. The failure occurred on bumpy road surfaces. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the technician repositioned the anti-lock brake system bracket and parking brake cable. Also, the abs wiring was replaced. The failure mileage was unknown.
I and many other other new camaro owners have been having problems with brake pulsation, general motors has a tsb out on the pulsation problem but fails to do a recall. It's very dangerous i feel for myself and other camaro owners.i don't want to have to keep bringing my car in for service if the brake components are unreliable for these f body cars.
While in normal driving conditions, if not better than average conditions including long trips, every 3000 miles or so, the front rotors warp from the heat generated over short periods of time with full amounts of brake pad.many mechanics and service managers admitt to this problem. The problem is described to me as due to the rotors being too thin and the pads having too much metal makeup. An "engineering problem"as it was unofficially refered to.the rotors are not thick enough, and/or not enough air to cool the components.recomendations from both independent ase mechanics as well as gm dealership employees (unofficially) was to purchase either slotted "racing" rotors or try ceramic non-metal pads from other sources. This has apparently gone on since 1998 on both firebirds and camaros.
The rotors on *all* camaros sinc approximately 1998 are faulty.however, the 2001 and 2002models seem to be suffering the most frequent failures.the rotors on my 2001 z28 warped and were serviced under warranty at 6,500 miles.already, at 11,000 miles, they are warped again.i do not race or autocross this vehicle, so oem parts should be more than sufficient.i contacted my dealershi again and was told(off the record, of course) that the oem rotors for the camaro are poorly designed and don't match up with this car.they advised me to purchase an aftermarket set of rotors from an automotive parts store and not to use oem parts.they also will not warranty the rotors a second time.considering the fact that the dealerships are telling the customers that the stock rotors are not matched to the car, chevrolet should issue a safety recall.if the rotors are warping prematurely, then they are most certainly subject to premature failure and could cause a fatal accident.i can provide you with probably 50 other documented cases of the oem rotors warping at an accelerated rate.i'm hopting that nhtsa can put some pressure on gm to fix this problem before it causes a fatality.
Have had 2 sets of rotors on this car since purchased. Now needs another set. Warranty will no longer cover this. Car is driven less than 20 miles per day, and currently has 28k on the 3rd set of rotors, dealer claims this is normal. This is not normal!! car should not be having these problems. It is a performance car, and should it be driven like one, the rotors may heat, warp and cause a hazardious condition that may cause an accident or death!. Dealers have many complaints, & so does chevrolet, why are they doing nothing about this?
I have problems with thebrakes & rotors on my 2001 camaro. They are warping. Why has there not been a recall? hello ! guess there will be after someone getshurt or killed. People can not keep paying for brakes and rotors. Hope someone wakes up soon.

I have problems with the rotors on my 2001 camaro. They keep warping. I had them turned 04/25/2002 and now they are warping again i only put 200 miles on since i turned them.

While driving the t-top of the consumer's 2001 chevrolet camaroflew off the vehicle.when the top came off it struck the consumer in the head.the consumer went to the emergency room with a head injury.the consumer contacted the manufacturer to request reimbursement but was denied due to lack of evidence
I just purchased 2001 camaro z28 covertible. I have owned camaro's forever and was never anything but completely happy with it. This car has some kind of "shake" to it at certain speeds. The steering wheel looks like someone is in the column shaking it! also it sounds like the springs need some serious help that i did not hear initially. The car only has 37k miles on it. I have only owned this car for a couple of months, brought it back to the dealer twice already and being told that there is no problem except for some kind of a covertible shake issue which completely sounds like a joke and they can't provide the bulletin that they say was issued on this car but was no big deal. I also took it to ase cert. Mechanics that are telling me different, i just need some help so i am not taken to the cleaners on this car.
Consumer truly disappointed in the quality and performance of 2001 chevrolet camero.

Dashboard has cracked terribly. Had to put a cover over it. Thought pieces would fly off.
While applying the accelerator pedal the vehicle decelerated.the mechanic was unable to duplicate the problem.
Engine management computer holds throttle open when foot is lifted off accelerator.very dangerous on highway.dealers (2) claim "many owner complaints, but this is normal ... They all do it.operates per design..."
Consumer stated the lfet side mirror has been fixed four times, the mirrior breaks for no reason. Also car needs oil every 1000 miles.
Rear view mirror will vibrate and shake to the point where consumer cannot see behind her. Contacted dealer, and the dealer has replaced mirror twice, butproblem still occurs.. Consumer was informed by gm represenative that nothing is abnormal regarding rear view mirror.

Firestone 500 tire experienced tread separation failure resulting in a traffic accident at highway speeds.contacted firestone via registered mail buy after one month no response.this is the same problem that they experienced in the past.i got a replacement tire from a different manufacturer and the shop tech said he never saw this happen before.i would not ever purchase a firestone product in the futures.the accident happened at highway speed 70 mph.the tread separated and my vehicle spun around into the next lane and was facing oncoming traffic. Another vehicle tried to avoid the accident but hit my drivers side front bumper and fender, pushing me off of the road.
