While driving air bag computer deployed, but air bags did not come out.air bag light came on.contacted dealer, and dealer stated nothing they could do. Had to replace computer module. The consumer stated that gm denied to replace the air bag module.
The contact owns a 1998 chevrolet camaro. The contact stated that while driving approximately 70 mph, the power steering assist failed causing the steering wheel to seize. The contact was not able to maneuver the steering wheel due to the failure and another vehicle crashed into the rear of the contact's vehicle. The air bag failed to deploy.the contact sustained a fractured sternum and required medical attention.a police report was filed of the incident.the vehicle was destroyed and towed to a salvage yard.the manufacturer was notified of the defect.the approximate failure mileage was 120,000.updated 8/11/14
On two occasions dual airbags did not deploy. Consumer rearended another vehicle at approximately50 mph,and at 80 mph hit a truck head-on upon impact, air bags did not deploy. Driver sustained injuries.dealer did not determine why air bagsdid not deploy.
Vehicle was involved in an accident at approximately 40-45 mph. Upon impact, air bags did not deploy, and abs brakes failed to stop vehicle . Dealer notifed, and vehicle is being inspected and repaired that this time.

Chevrolet camaro 1998 3.8l v6.attery retension tray failed, causing the battery to become loose inside engine compartment.problem was found during oil change.plastic lip, holding bottom of the battery has broke off, leaving no retension feature on the tray. New tray must be purchased to fix the problem.i suspect there is a possibility of battery short circuit and potential fire hazard if battery terminal contact car body during vehicle operation.
98 chevy camaro: running lights melt and cause bulb to fuse with fixture. This has already happened on this car three times. I think that this problem really needs to be investigated for recall replacement at chevy's cost. They know this part melts. They know it has a history. The part seems to have a lifespan of 2 1/2 years. I am expecting the other one to melt soon as they did the last time within a month or so of each other. It seems that chevy would rather be forced to replace a part, then simply protecting it's drivers. This is my last hope to get the running lights replaced since the part is defective.other defective parts, moody ignition, driver side mirror, and windshield wipers.
Factory battery had a crack, post corroded off, and was leaking acid, dealer said possibly due to overtightening when installed.not covered under warranty.
Alternator failed.
Alternator died, had to replace on 8/8/03. Heard sound in the rear, changed shock absorbers,noise is still there,going to change springs next8/20/03 .

1998 z28: have experienced fuel pump failure (replaced by dealer circa june 99) also, experiencing an erratic fuel gage...reading fuel for a lengthy period of time, then suddenly drops to less than 2/3.intermittent horn function: complete horn failure; however, if you shut the engine off and restart horn will work.front rotor warping repeatedly.manufacture denies there is a problem, says driver is overheating brakes.i believe the problem is rotors are poorly designed.also found if you don't drive through water when rotors are hot that this will help. Slow acceleration after cold startup.however, if you shut engine down and restart acceleration will be normal.
When hood is closed, fuel line is being punctured by upper ignition coil bolt on driver's side fron tof valve cover. This could eventually cause a fire.

I paid $23,000 for this car and now i have to rebuild the motor too! if anyone else has experienced similar problems with gmpp, i would like you to contact me by e-mail at [email protected] my suggestion is to never buy an extended warranty because it won't do you any good if you ever have a major claim.
Consumer was driving vehicle. Crossing bridge onto interstateat approximately 25-30 mph when noticed smoke and flames coming from dash area. Local fire department arrived and put the fire out. Reason for fire is unknown at this time. Dealer /manufacture notified.

Engine burns a quart of oil every 1500 miles. Dealer says this is within tolerances. Burned no oil for the first 15000 miles, then a quart after 3000, then a quart after 2000, now a quart every 1500h.

Have had chronic problems with this car. Most recent being the failure of the abs braking system. The dealership says that the abs computer module and or sensors have failed.it seems that this is a constant problem with camaros. I feel as though this needs to be a covered repair.the car is practically new and they want $800.00 to fix it.

Lights: life span of tail lights is much shorter than expected.emergency brake lever: when applying emergency brake, a loud "pop" is heard and the sound of a spring (normally, theres a clicking sound and the lever is raised). Lever moves to a much higher position than normal. If the emergency brake is released, then re-engaged, it works properly. Failures are not predictable.

Nylon line was pinched when car was assembled resulting in a fuel leak which progressed over months until fuel was dripping onto pavement.leak was sufficient to cause fire and a substantial amount of pollution.manufacturer had no tsb nor warranty coverage.this was a dangerous failure which was difficult to "catch."
There is a fuel line which runs over the #1 coil pack in my 1998 camaro z28. There are two screws which hold down the #1 coil pack. One of the screws has a cone shaped top, and the fuel line runs directly over this screw. After changing my spark plugs and inspecting the fuel line, the screw on the #1 coil pack has worn through the insulation and part of the fuel line. I went to bud allan chevrolet in hayward and talked to george rodriguez, a service consultant and informed him of this problem. He informed me that my premium extended warranty (factory warranty has expired since 36,000 miles) does not cover the worn through fuel line. I believe that this manufacturer's defect can harm the public because the said screw can wear all the way through the fuel line and cause gasoline to leak onto a hot component such as the exhaust manifold, causing a fire or explosion and harming or killing passengers in the cabin as well as bystanders and seriously damage public and private property. I hope that the nhtsa will look into this problem and suggest that chevrolet issue a recall to correct this major problem. The lives of many individuals are at stake, as many owners may not know of this problem. I would also like to comment on chevrolet's extended warranties where they would not cover such an item. I was extremely displeased to acknowledge that my fuel line was not covered under their extended warranty, which could result in the loss of my life, the life of my passengers and the lives of any individuals around my vehicle if my vehicle may catch fire or explode when that fuel line becomes ruptured from a screw. There is a fuel line which runs over the #1 coil pack on my 1998 camaro z28. There are two screws which hold down the #1 coil pack. One of the screws has a pointed cone shaped top. A fuel line and air line run directly over this screw. There was a post on ls1.com notifying owners of 1998 z28 camaros of this potential design defect and for owners to check their vehicles for premature wear and possible rupture ofthe fuel line. I inspected my vehicle and the fuel line. The screw had worn through the insulation and either into the air line or fuel line. I went to superior chevrolet in shawnee kansas and spoke to the service manager and informed him of the problem. To prove that my vehicle was not the only one with this defect we randomly selected another 1998 z28. It had the exact same problem. He had me leave my vehicle the next day. Upon returning he said the fuel was inspected and that it was ok. The fix was to relocate the fuel and air line with a plastic wire-tie.i voiced my concerns with fix, but was assured the problem had been corrected. It still concerns me however, that the lines could have been inspected without removing the insulation from the lines to determine the extent of the wear and penetration of either the air line or fuel line.the fuel line and air line assembly had not been replaced. Please note that the car is still under warranty. I believe that this defect can harm the public because the design defect can wear all the way through the fuel line and cause gasoline to leak onto the hot engine, or exhaust manifold, causing a fire or explosion, with the potential to obviously burn up the car and also harm or kill passengers in the car. I would hope that the nhtsa will examine this problem and demand that gm issue a recall to correct this major design defect and (not with a cheap wire-tie). Upon take off, transmission started making noise and did not want to go into second gear.tried backing up and reverse was gone.car will shift into second gear with help.car has always been maintained properly and transmission serviced at required time.presently awaiting word from chevy to see if they will replace transmission at no cost or little cost as mileage is low and car has been well maintained.

Transmission & torque converter had to be replaced at 54,000 miles.easy, highway mileage only on vehicle. I have all receipts for maintenance of vehicle since day purchased. Vehicle maintained in strict adherence to owner's manual long trip/highway maintenance schedule.
Car has been in repair 5 times for the brakes. 2 times for a caliper bolt that fell out, and the wheel locked. Both times i could have been killed in an accident if my wheel would have locked up on the interstate. They never do anything at the dealership but turn/clean roters which become faulty again. I'm looking into sueing chevrolet if they don't fix this defect. It is way too dangerous for something of this nature to keep occuring over and over again. Next time i might not be so lucky.
My car has done a 'tink-tink' sound since i took it out of the dealer with only 8 miles on the odometer. Every time i put it in drive or reverse, it makes a double tink-pop from under. When you accelerate, it sounds again, and sometimes sounds as the trasmission changes gears (automatic) or you brake. I'm concerned that it could break while driving, and causing a potential hazard with a crash as it becomes undriveable.

Cluch stuck whiledepressed and engine was engaged. Gear shift was stuck in reverse. Car was moving by itself and would not stop when brakes were applied. Could not force it out of gearor get clutch to release.had to pull emergency brake to get car to stop and engine to kill.after car died tried to turn the key to see if clutch would come up when key was turned to the on position and car started again and began to move on it's own.again, i killed engine by pulling emergency brake.eventually was able to force car out of gear while it was off and then had toforce clutch up and work it back and forth until it loosed up and car could be moved forward, back into our driveway.
I have talked to quite a few people describing the same problem with there clutches not working properly in the cold, also many people have problems with there rotors warping.( dot number: tire size: p275/40/17 )

The owner's manual stated that the rear seat belts did not have anchors but could be installed at the owner's request. Consumer contacted the dealer to install the anchors.dealer informed the consumer that anchorscould not be installed.also, consumercontacted the manufacturer, who said the same thing.
Whenever braking or accelerating driver's seat would move back & forth on the tracks.seat was very unstable.could adjustseat & lock it. Stayed in place until the braking or accelerating. Contacted dealership7 times in 3 years.had nuts & bolts tighten & adjusted. Problem still exists on the seat.manufacturer who no help solving problem.

I started experiencing a pulsating sensation from the brakes after about 5 thousand miles.this sensation usually occurs during moderate braking at freeway speeds. The pulsing continued to increase over time.it got to the point where the steering wheel would vibrate in my hands as i applied the brakes while approaching a stop sign at 35 mph.i contacted my dealer about bringing my car in to have them service the brakes.they told me the rotors were warped and that this would not be covered under warranty.i decided to pull the rotors myself and have them resurfaced.once this procedure was performed the brakes operated perfectly.it is now 3 thousand miles later and i have the same problem again.this is the fifth camaro z28 i have owned and i have not had any problems with the brakes on my other vehicles( 2 1992, 1 1995, 1 1996).i do not drive this vehicle any differently than my previous vehicles.i realize the brakes were redesigned for this vehicle in 1998 and feel that their is a defect in either the disc rotor type, manufacture, or material.the disc rotors and other related brake components that are a direct cause of this problem should be replaced by chevrolet at no cost to the consumer.

Front brake rotors are warped, and have been since the car was new.dealer "cleans" them each time i bring in the car.many people have reported this problem. There should be a recall for these defective rotors.
When applying the brakes the vehicle did a 180 degree spin and hit a pole due to the abs kicking in. Dealer has not seen vehicle.

When car is being driven in wet conditions and the brakes are applied, the car shakes violently, to the point of loosing control of the car. The dealer says it is the anti-lock brakes and this is normal.

Rotors warped at 6k miles; dealer refinished same. Repair lasted roughly 6k miles before problem returned. At highway speeds (60mph +) if brakes are applied front wheels shake severely, causing loss of control. In a panic situation, i don't think the car would be controllable. Dealer solution is to resurface rotors a second time and replace if problem returns. This appears to be a widespread problem with camaros, and i fail to see how replacing rotors with the same part will solve the problem. This is a high performance vehicle capable of 150mph + speeds, and should have a braking system to match.
The right rear tire blew out, it is in two completely different peices, on a major highway.i could have easily lost control of the vehicle and been in a major accident.i have also had to have the tires plugged twice already since i purchased the vehicle.the brakes have been squeaking for almost three months and when reported to dealer they did nothing to fix it.they have also caused skidding when roads are wet and do not feel as if they are properly locking.( dot number: tire size: p235/55r16 )

Rotors warped at 9876 miles and vandergriff chevrolet turned them. They warped again at 22593 and the same dealer would not fix them because they say it is out of warranty.
There has been a slight shimmy in the front end when applying the brakes at highway speeds since the car was new.the shimmy progressivly got worse and worse.i brought the car to the dealer to have it looked at.he says the rotors are warped and need to be resurfaced.he said that it is not a warrantee repair and i will have to pay for it.i argued that the car has always had the shimmy but i didn't supect a problem, this being my first car with abs brakes.the car only has 18,577 miles, the brake rotors should not be warped.my arguing with the dealer has not gotten anywhere, since the car is no longer safe to be driven in its current condition, i agreed to pay for the repair.now, after doing some looking around on the internet i have found out that many camaro owners have the same exact problem.though some dealers have been repairing the rotors under warantee, but most don't.and i've also found out that resurfacing the rotors(which i am paying for!), and even replacing the rotors with oem parts does not solve the problem.there is a design flaw and the problem will continue to recur if gm replacement parts are used.in this day, a $20k-$30k new car should not have defective rotors that the owners are forced to continually get repaired.a cars braking system is its number one safety component, how can the consumer be subjected to this?
Need a recall on 98+ front rotors.inferior products have caused hundreds of people to experience warping and steeering wheel vibration.this is unsafe,and unnecessary!!

I first noticed that i was having a problem with my brakes when i would apply the brakes to either slow down or to stop.the steering wheel would have a slight shimmy to it.i took it and had a mechanic that i know and trust take a look at it and he had to "machine" the right front rotor.i didn't write down the mileage at the time because i didn't think it was that improtant.i took it to the dealership on 3/3/99 and asked them to take a look at the brakes because i could hear a scraping noise coming from the right front brake when i would apply the brakes.the shop looked at the brakes and said that they were fine.i took the shop foreman for a ride with me so that he was clear on what i was hearing and he told me that they were suppose to sound like that.i have not been back to that dealership since.i have a terrible shimmy in the steering when i apply the brakes and the noise is terrible.i have had the rotors replaced and it has already wore out this rotor.i don't know where else to turn to to get some kind of help on this.i have the original rotors that came off of the car.i also have all of my repair receipts.
The front rotors are warping prematurely.i had a '95 z28which i drove much harder and never had a problem(55,000).the 1998 however, has failed three times in 25,000 miles.
Warped rotors - twice.dealers/gm won't replace defective materials because "they don't have to".it's a safety hazard that gm doesn't care at all about.it seems to me that the metal for the rotors on these cars wasn't properly hardened.these cars were assembled just prior to the big gm strike.please investigate this.with all the other complaints of this problem with these cars with the nhtsa, one would think there'd be a recall or tsb released on these by now.is nhtsa doing anything about this?btw - i also plan to contact my state's attorney general about this.

I have talked to a number of camaro owners who all are having the same problem the the disc brake rotors.
Brake rotors warp easily, previous owner had them repaired once. I am still in process of transferring warantee, where and when i will take vehicle in for repairs.
The front brake rotors have warpped six (6) times on this car causing steering wheel shaking and posssible loss of control. Including the original rotors, there has been four (4) new sets of rotors on this car and those rotors have been resurfaced three ( 3) times. I have been to two different chevrolet dealers to have this work done and have contacted general motors direct and they can not figure out why the brakes are defective. I have heard of many camaro and firebird owners with this same rotor warpping problem. I first filed a complant with nhtsa on 5/29/99 and the rotors have been replaced two more times since that submittal.

Rotors for disc brakes are warped or get warped when car is new w/lt1000 miles
Brake rotors warped at 10,000 miles, dealer claimed only warrantied for 7500. Car in for brake problems 3 times, and they refused to replace the rotors.contacted chevrolet, and they instructed dealer to replace rotors at no charge. Dealer was very difficult to deal with, did not want to replace until i took the issue to a higher level. Dealer claimed no knowledge of rotor problems with this car. I referred him to this website, and gave him a print out of the complaints on the 98 camaro.there is a lot of data available on the internet with regards to this problem.
Camaro was brand new off the lot 6-99. At 28000 miles i began to notice while traveling at speeds of 55-70 mph. And applied the brakes the front end of the camaro began to shake. The car now has more than 33000 miles and the shake is much worse. I went to tom bannen chevrolet to talk with the service mgr. And the new car sales manager. They both told me the front rotors were worn out and needed to be replaced with the total cost being my responsability. I have been driving for more than thirty five years and never had to replace rotors. I'am a retired truck driver. Should i ever find myself on icy slick roads and have to apply the brakes at the speeds mentioned, i will certainly go into a spin. I feel the the manufacture should be responsible for replacing the pre wearing rotors escpecially considering the intial price charged to me for the new camaro. I have spoke with other new car owners and many are expeiancing similar problems. Brakes are nothing to be experimenting cheaper and thinner parts just to save that mighty dollar. We are talking about quality, saftey, fair consumer trust that all parts are of the best quality when it comes to the braking system. Thank you for your patience in reading this complaint.

Axle seal failure caused lots of smoke and could have resulted in fire.

When the brakes are applied there is a severe squeak, and the pedal will depress all the way to the floor. The system takes extra seconds to kick in and stop as itshould. Dealer has been contacted, they replaced the rotors five times and the pads seven times.

Car has been in repair 5 times for the brakes. 2 times for a caliper bolt that fell out, and the wheel locked. Both times i could have been killed in an accident if my wheel would have locked up on the interstate. They never do anything at the dealership but turn/clean roters which become faulty again. I'm looking into sueing chevrolet if they don't fix this defect. It is way too dangerous for something of this nature to keep occuring over and over again. Next time i might not be so lucky.

I went back to the dealership since the problem came back on 3-30-99 and they refused to turn it saying it was not under warranty and that it would cost me $435. 1998 z28: have experienced fuel pump failure (replaced by dealer circa june 99) also, experiencing an erratic fuel gage...reading fuel for a lengthy period of time, then suddenly drops to less than 2/3.intermittent horn function: complete horn failure; however, if you shut the engine off and restart horn will work.front rotor warping repeatedly.manufacture denies there is a problem, says driver is overheating brakes.i believe the problem is rotors are poorly designed.also found if you don't drive through water when rotors are hot that this will help. Slow acceleration after cold startup.however, if you shut engine down and restart acceleration will be normal.

Rotors warped at 6k miles; dealer refinished same. Repair lasted roughly 6k miles before problem returned. At highway speeds (60mph +) if brakes are applied front wheels shake severely, causing loss of control. In a panic situation, i don't think the car would be controllable. Dealer solution is to resurface rotors a second time and replace if problem returns. This appears to be a widespread problem with camaros, and i fail to see how replacing rotors with the same part will solve the problem. This is a high performance vehicle capable of 150mph + speeds, and should have a braking system to match.

The brake rotors on this car warp over a 10,000 mile period, causing steering wheel shaking and possible loss of control. This car is 18 months old and has 42240 miles on it. The rotors were resurfaced by the dealer on 4/9/98 at 11,633 miles, again on 8/11/98 at 21,181 miles, then they replaced the rotors on 12/23/98 at 31,376 miles, then these new rotors warped and were resurfaced on 5/20/99 at 41,830 miles. As you can see, the brake rotors need to be done every 10,000 miles. The shaking in the steering wheel begins to appear again at about 8,000 miles after the last work is done and gets worse until the shake is uncontrolable at about 10,000 miles. The dealer and chevrolet say they cannot figure out what is causing this (i have called customer assistance many times and have sent a certified letter to chevrolet motor division). I have heard of many other camaro and trans am owners (with v-8 engines) with this same problem. I don't know if the rotors are defective, if the brake pads are too hard (causing the rotors to over heat & warp) or it is another problem with the braking system.
Freeway speed braking compromised due to extreme vibration caused by warped front rotors. Dealer has tried to repair problem by machining - always reappears after 5000 miles. Now they refuse to fix as it is a 'wear item'. This is a design or material quality issue that has been present since new. Brakes that can't be used to their full effectiveness are a safety item.

I own a 1998 chevrolet camero which i purchased new.since i have owned this vehicle the cabling system that manually controls the driver's side mirror has broken 4 times.the previous 3 times it was repaired under warrenty.from what i understand they had to replace the entire mirror each time.the cable has broke again and now is no longer under warrenty.i don't know how much of a problem this has been in other similar vehicles. When the cable breaks the mirror moves inward out of adjstment and cannot be set by any other means.not having a functional driver's side mirror is extremely dangerous.

Twice under warrantywindshield wipers failed to come on and the dealer (different from where i bought the car) replaced the wiper motor. The repair lasted approx. 1 year before the next failure. Now that the warranty is over all of a sudden it's the switch and will cost me $275.00. The same symptoms each time- wipers would not operate until put on full or by pushing the mist control first.
While traveling on the freeway with windshield wipers on the second highest setting, the passenger-side windshield wiper armbroke in half.the wiper assembly slid up the windshield, flew over the top of my car, and landed in the middle of the freeway.fortunately, the only driver behind me was several hundred yards away.
