Vehicle left the road and hit a tree head on and air bags did not deploy.

1) burnt electrical wires for the electric fuel pump. Location is inside the gas tank. Had to replace the fuel pump to rectify the problem. Explosion hazard.2) power steering- wheel would jerk vehicle towards oncoming traffic. Happens without warning. Noticed many complaints on this problem without anything being done about it. Even by the ntsb! is someone receiving a kickback on this thing or what?3) burnt electrical connection-connector between the hvac cooling fan and the selector switch inside of dash.4) clunking noise/hard shift, from transmission 4l60e-happens constantly from 1st to 2nd gear. More noticeable when vehicle is warm.

The quick disconnect heater hose fitting screwed into the intake manifold of vortec 4.3, 5.0, 5.7 engines 1996--2000. It is made out of an inexpensive pot metal material, it corrodes and leaks antifreeze. It is a very common problem that occurred on my own vehicle (1997 k1500 4x4) andon many other vehicles of the same model. The part costs 15.00 at the dealer, but upon failure, it can cost 600--1000 to repair and replace. Failure causes engine overheating that can be a hazard while vehicle is in use. Engine failure can cause a crash. Gm should institute a recall to all owners of vehicles with vortec engines that use this fitting.

Dt:on the 26th of june the consumer's daughter was driving on gene snider freeway in louisville, ky when the vehicle quite running. The consumer's daughter was able to coast to the side of the road. Then consumer called a family member to come help tow vehicle to daughter's house.the consumer's son in-law inspected the vehicle and found burned wires that had fallen off and went down in the fuel tank. Consumer bought fuel tank monitor sender kit at bob mcgumbrys chevrolet located in louisville, ky 40216. Consumer's son in-law had vehicle parts removed, and is going to replace parts with new parts.the consumer does not have any idea what might have caused this to happen.the dealer where consumer bought part told her that they sell a lot of these kits, so consumer thinks this must happen frequently.

I am very disappointed in this vehicle.the dealership has been wonderful about fixing the differential problem-replacement of ring and pinion and reset depth.the ongoing problem with the steering is frightening. It is unpredictable.especially while driving in the mountains it may act up, causing erratic steering and feeling like the steering is locking up and completely failing.it has been reported to gm, but they say they have never hadcomplaint, and that they would contact the dealershipand call me back.i have found many, many reported situations with steering failure to your organization for the 1997 chevrolet truck.now i wonder what gm will due about it.i do not feel i should have to pay for a manufacturing failure of equipment.this vehicle has had fuel injector problems, and has cost me over $500. The rear differential has been rebuilt 4 times and now needs it again.one week after purchase of this vehicle the differential howl started.the dealer said to drive it for 5000 or more miles and bring it in if it still had the problem.

Knob that turns on the instrument panel lights broke off.the way it is designed, the whole front of the instrument panel will have to b e taken off to fix it.another junky oem part.why?

Driver's side door handle broke off at 35,000 miles.these handles are made of pot metal, as the parts department confirmed casually, and would cost about $180. For the dealer to replace - also stated without a blink.

We drive two chevrolet pick-up trucks in our department.one 1997k2500, and one 1998 k3500 model.both of these trucks have had several replacement interior door handles installed over the years.a few were covered by warranty and more were replaced in our shop, at a cost of roughly $25.00 on each occasion.another handle broke yesterday.these handles are made of a white metal and break in the same spot each time.we are thinking that this might be a defect that the manufacturer knows about as the dealers always seem to have replacements in stock.all but one of the handles broken have been the drivers door handle.we have to roll down the window and unlatch the door from outside until the repair is made.i noticed one complaint has been logged on your site.i imagine many others have not yet been reported.we have a drawer full of the defective handles if you would like to inspect them.*la

Door latch assembly cracked.

Driving down the road went to stop to back up and i placed the truck in reverse to back up i heard aloud noise as if i had backed into someone.(like metal to metal) so i immediately applied the brake and put the truck in drive to pull up to see if i had. Nothing in sight. So i eased the truck up a little, applied the brake and put the truck in reverse again. This time it would not move, in fact all you could hear was a chattering noise coming from the transmission. So i put it back in drive and went to pull off and you could hear the transmission whinning and would no shift gears. The only way i could get the truck to move was to put it all the way in low range and manually shift back up to drive. The transmission still did not operate correctly and had to be parked.

I have a 1997 chevrolet silverado truck. Over the last several months i have been experiencing random failure in the anti-lock brakes, they engage in situations where there is no reason to. Recently i viewed a report that your organization is investigating the same problem with 1999 - 2002 models, but the problem in that investigation exactly describes my problem. Since the problem is random, you cannot be prepared when you don't quite stop as fast as expected. My truck is in excellent condition and i cannot expect my son to be able to handle this situation as he is an in-experienced driver. I was going to schedule soon to have it fixed when i viewed the article about a potential recall. I am awaiting to hear your decision and hoping you include earlier models (1997) such as mine if there is a recall.

Dt*:the contact stated while attempting to apply brake pressure at various speeds the brakes failed.this occurred without warning during normal braking on normal roads.the dealership turned the rotors, packed the wheel bearings, replaced the cylinders, sealed in rear axles, replaced the brakes and pads however the problem still exists.the manufacturer has been alerted.updated 6/19/2006 -

Anti lock brakes engage at slow speeds (less than 5 mph) on dry pavement.vehicle stopping distance was increased causing low speed collision. No injuries but minor property damage. This problem still exists. Co-worker has a 98 with same problem.

The rear brake line corroded and began a major leak causing my pregnant wife to nearly rear end a car.

The antilock brakes on 1997 chevrolet w/t 4wd pickup kept activating on dry pavement. I understand gm has had similar problems with other trucks but won't recognize the problem with this truck. This is my second complaint and i just emailed gm again about the problem. They told me to take it to a dealer to have it diagnosed. I would have to pay for the service and gm would contact the dealer to see if they (gm) would pay to repair it. I don't want to do this because i'm afraid i might get stuck with the whole bill. I had the truck to a dealer once and they told me it was the speed sensors and i would have to pay to fix it. Against my better judgment i disconnected the abs system because it wasn't safe to drive the way it was. It has been a couple years since i complained about this matter but it has been on my mind for a long time. I paid for abs brakes, they don't work like they should, they are unsafe, and gm won't stand behind it. That's the bottom line. If thousands of other year trucks have this problem, why won't they take care of mine. My son had a 1997 s-10 chevrolet pickup with the same problem only he hit a parked vehicle when the brakes didn't work and demolished this truck. No one was hurt but his insurer blamed him and raised his premium. It was general motors fault! i told them i was driving the truck with the abs system deactivated but it's like they're telling me it's not their problem.i guess it's only a safety issue if they say it's a safety issue.i am not sure of the exact dates of the occurrences anymore so i just estimated.could you please let me know if i have any recourse?

Anti lock brake problems

Anti lock brakes engage at slow speeds (less than 5 mph) on dry pavement.vehicle stopping distance was increased causing low speed collision. No injuries but minor property damage. This problem still exists. Co-worker has a 98 with same problem.

Vehicle is experiencing braking problems, during a hard stop, the brakes extend the stopping length and make noises, brakes are very sensitive when stopping on smooth roads and during normal stopping, the consumer has had new brakes, rotors, durms and a master cylinder, but the problems still exist.

I own a 1997 chevrolet c1500 pickup truck. I have had power steering problems with it two different times. I have had wiper problems with it once.

Reduced steering effort while driving.feels like you have no control over the steering, like there is no resistance in the wheel.this occurs mostly in turns but has also happened while driving in straight line.according to chevrolet this is due to a bad speed sensor and bearing assembly.why should the consumer have to pay for their faulty equipment???why isn't this a recall?this occurance is very common in 1997-98 chevrolet and gmc c/k, m/l and g-van with evo.

The steering locked up and jerked while driving.the consumer experienced the same problem with a 1997 chevrolet he owned.

Brakes failed, inspection revealed completely rusted out brake lines, frame, suspension components, steering components, and crossmembers. Vehicle is not repairable and is no longer usable.

Steering intermittently surges to right - it'a momentary condition.scarey!cost $170 in labor plus part (evo sensor) - but only took 30 minutes.

The steering wheel tilt has pulled the windshield wipers plug out of socket, causing them to stop working. Dealer has been contacted.

Faulty electronic steering assist.fails and is common problem almost caused accident by making vehicle pull to the side unexpectedly.

Chevrolet 1500 p/u steering problems. Intermittent hard to steer. Almost like something binding then after it "unbinds" will be loose. Most noticeable while steering slightly left. Power steering pump has been replaced with no effect.on this forum others have noted evo sensor might be the problem.

While driving truck on highway and turning slightly to the left, the steering wheel loses control and turns on it's on.later this happened when driving straight and the wheel suddenly without warning turned to the right as though someone turned it ....i was driving in the mountains several times and this erratic sudden movement of the steering happened...each time the dealer says they called chevrolet and asked how to repair this.then they do something like replacing the power steering sensor...once they replaced the pump assembly...once the steering module....i took the truck back on 10/27/99 after experiencing several episodes of this phantom turning of the steering wheel...they returned my vehicle with a notation on the order that they did nothing about it and would repair at a later date...this vehicle is dangerous to drive in this condition ...it has done this again and again with no fix from the dealer or chevrolet...the truck soon will be out of warranty...i cannot relax driving this vehicle.

1997 chevrolet k 20 pickup truck steering .vehicle has variable speed sensor that failed causing steering problems when cornering........happened on a slick road and almost had an accident.....i have done some research and found out that 1997 1998 and 1999 trucks had this type steering..as many owners as i could find have all had this problem and every chevrolet dealer i called have hadadmitted they have had countless trucks in for this repair.

Steering takes off in either direction at any time since it was new.dealer claimed nothing was wrong.

Steering has been a problem for 2 years, but taken to dealer it will not act up. It is completely unpredictable to when the steering acts up.the steering locks up and you can move the wheel easily.then it lets go and has loose feeling. It is really noticeable while driving on curvy roads or in the mountains. I have noticed a great of complaints to your organization about the erratic steering problem with this model, gmc truck and tahoes as well. I reported it today to gm after a near accident on the freeway when my wheel lock up and i found it difficult to move out of way of an oncoming truck onto the freeway.he was not looking and almost sideswiped me.the steering was difficult to control.the manufacturer said they never heard of the problem before.rather hard to believe at this point.

This is in regard to an ongoing problem i've had with my vehicle for the last 4 years, and i believe it is a safety issue that should be addressed.i own a 1997 chevrolet c/k pickup which i purchased new.about 2 years after i purchased it, i noticed my steering suddenly got extremely loose and very sensitive, causing me to be extra careful with my driving.i immediately took it in to an authorized chevrolet dealership for repairs.once completed, i asked the technician what had caused the problem.he stated that it was the steering assist, also known as the evo sensor, that went bad.luckily, my vehicle warranty covered the costs.two years later after my vehicle warranty was expired i began experiencing the same problem.this time though, since the dealership was going to charge me $100 to replace it, i decided to do it myself with some help from a few automotive forums on the internet.the sensor itself costed me about $50 or $60, but the installation went smooth.well, apparently these evo sensors only have a life span of 2 years because my sensor just went out again.now i know there are many gm vehicle owners out there with this same problem.i've read many posts on message forums regarding this issue and i really believe that gm should recall the vehicles that use this evo sensor, mainly the vehicles manufactured in 1997, and get some kind of permanent fix for them.it can be very dangerous when one is driving at fast speeds and suddenly lose steering control.as for myself, i'm having to concentrate more on keeping my vehicle between the white lines, and forget about even taken your eyes off the road even a second.....you'll immediately begin to drift one way or the other.i think that anything that affects the way your car handles and drives from one moment to the next, especially while driving, should be an immediate safety concern.thank you for your time.

Steering is unpredictable, it has a mind of its own. I have taken it to the dealer i bought it from and they still cant figure out the problem. With all the complaints i see on this website why is nothing being done to fix this problem? this has happened since i first purchased vehicle. This is a very dangerous situation.

I've had this problem since i bought my truck 4 years ago.i've put on 2 new power steering pumps, new lines, new sensor.the problem started with what seemed like slack and an occasional phantom jerk.it will run fine for a while and then all of the sudden the steering seems to bind with no warning.i guess it won't get noticed until it a few people die.i've had several close calls myself.

1997 chevrolet half ton pickup truck power steering intermittently and very briefly locks up on left turns.

The power steering pump shaft broke while my wife was driving my 97 chevrolet k1500 fwd pickup. She was unable to streer the truck and had to call me to come get it. A locale mechanic and i removed the serpentine belt and pulled the pump shaft and pully right out of the pump. The shaft was broke in half in side the pump. I think this was a pretty serious failure as my wife was unable to steer the truck or brake. I had the mechanic replace the pump for me. The main reason i mention this is because a co worker of mine has a 2001 yukon that had the exact same problem. I think this is more wide spread than just on 2000 model trucks.

Dt: the contact had to replace the driver's side door handle.it started as being difficult to open the door, but progressively got worse over a period of a couple weeks.eventually the door handle would no longer open the door.the dealer replaced the door handle.this corrected the problem.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 65 mph there was a loud noise that came from the rear of the vehicle.the vehicle was towed to a local independent repair shop.the mechanic determined the rear suspension needed to be replaced however no repairs were made.

I was returning homewhen it started raining.i tried to turn on my windshield wipers and they did not come on.the rain became very heavy and i was unable to see.i had no was to turn off or stop so i slowed down to about 10 mph in a 45 mph zone, so i could even stay on the road.when i finally had a chance to pull off the road i did. The wipers did not work at any speed, nor did the wiper wash mode work.after i made it home i checked the fuse for the wipers and it was okay.i turned the ignition switch on and the wipers worked.as we have had a lot of rain in our area, this occurred 3 seperate times where the wipers failed to work when i needed them.after i had gotten home, and checked again, they worked.i researched on the web at a chevy site and found that this was a common problem with the vehicle, mine is a 1997 chevrolet k pickup truck.i also found a odi recall which matched my type of failure.the dealer service manager said that my vehicle number was not part of the recall.the nhtsa action number is ea02006.even though this was a used truck and the symptoms matched, they would not provide the repairs for free based on the recall.i believe that this should be repaired as part of the recall.

Recently had wipers fail during heavy storm while on freeway.nearly caused crash.condition is intermittent.checked nhtsa website and found recall (03v159000) and documents showed entire production from my model was included.took truck to penske chev. Of cerritos, ca.asked them to check for recall applicability.they told me "the truck was too old" and my vin number was "not a good vin".they called gm and got the same info, no record of vin.i am the original owner (never received owner notifications) and showed them monroney label, original bill of sale and title with this vin.service writer told me that without vin, there would be no repair, despite the paperwork provided and gm recall document with affected range.dealer acted like i was trying to steal from them.

The windshield wipers on my 1997 chevrolet c1500 pickup truck will stop working while i am driving.this has happened several times.today it was raining fairly hard and i was driving along at 55mph and the wipers just stopped.it was like driving blindfolded.luckily i was able to pull over without hitting anyone.i did some research on the internet to find out what is causing this.i found a recall on the nhtsa.gov site for my year and make truck.nhtsa campaign id number: 03v159000i went to a chevrolet dealer and they knew exactly what was wrong, but told me my truck was not included in the recall.i don't understand how this can be.

Windshield wipers began to fail intermittently. During each failure, to date, i have pulled off the road and raised the hood. With the wiper in the "on" position, i rap sharply on the motor and the wipers begin to operate normally. This would indicate a short in the system.

1997 k3500 chevy truck. Have had issues with the wipers not working intermittentialy for the last 2 years. Came across a chevy bulletin ( 03023 ) and nhtsa 03v159000 that reflects the problem accuratly along with the internal dealer/gm notices that i obtained from alldata.com. I contacted both my local dealer and chevy corporate customer service about the issue. (ed mwango case 1-379680418 case number from chevy corporate ). They said that my vin did not come up in the recall and it was too old for them to consider. According to the internal gm doc this is a safety issue and should be addressed regardless of age or mileage. I would like gm/chevy to honor this recall.

Intermittent failure of the windshield wipers leading to a complete failure and totally inoperable. Wiper motor module/circuit board was replaced by chevrolet dealer at full price of $148.15. I was told by the dealer my vehicle was not covered under general motors recall #03023 (nhtsa recall # 03v159000) as my vin [xxx] was not on the approved gm recall list. Although it was not listed, the failure was the exact same as indicated in the recall description and i feel i should be reimbursed for the repairs. (1) failure of windshield wiper motor during rain storm(2) reduced visibility driving in rain(3) none

Within the past 3 months, i have noticed that my windshield wipers have intermittently quit working. Sometimes they will not come on at all and sometimes they will stop in the middle of service. This poses potential hazards not only to myself, but other drivers. I was looking online and found some information about a recall issued in 2003 that seems to cover this exact same defect in many other gm models. I called the dealership to find out if my 1997 ck 1500 pick up truck was covered and they informed me that it was not and suggested the problem was probably the circuit board. That is the same thing that was wrong with the recalled vehicles. Please advise if this is a problem the manufacturer is aware of and what steps they are taking to amend the recall to include additional makes and models. According to my research, there are other people in the same predicament.

I went to my local dealership to fix a recall on my chevorlet truck that i saw on your website and they will not fix it for free. They will not fix it because they have no knowledge of any recalls about it. I have an issue with the wipers not working all the time and it is causing a hazard when i drive in the rain.

Windshield washer works intermittently or quits working as this is a safety issue in poor weather.

Windshield wiper motor quit working. *mr the wipers stopped working in the process of tracking down the problem and discovered that no fuse was in the air bag.the fuse had been left out during assembly. *sc

Windshield wipers stopped working during a thunderstorm.

My windshield wipers have intermittently quit working.i have contacted the dealer about this problem and was informed that there was a recall on this problem for the same year model but mine was not included.however it has the same defect as the other 1997 models that has been recalled gmc needs to be aware of this and amend its recall.

Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)

On 6/12/05, the windshield wipers on my 1997 chevrolet silverado pickup truck failed during a sudden rainshower. I checked the breaker panel and found that the fuse for the wiper motor had not blown. Prior to taking the vehicle to a dealership for repair, i checked the nhtsa website to research if there had been a recall covering this repair. I located gm recall #03023/ nhtsa campaign id #03v159000 which covered certain pickups of my model year. The dealership advised that my vehicle was not covered under the recall and i spent $148.95 to have a "faulty circuit board module" replaced. This is the same repair called for under the aforementioned recall. A coincidence???

Dt:when the consumer would use the windshield wipers they would work off and on.the problem first started onaugust 13, 2005.thenhtsarecall03v159000/gm recall 03023 was issued. The consumer took the vehicle to a dealership forrecall repairs.the consumer was concerned because he wasbeing charged for the repair work that others were notcharged. When the consumer contacted the manufacturer, they told him that thisvehicle was not included in the recall due to vin.

I have1997 chevrolet pickup the windshield wipers seem to have a mind of their own they seem to quit at inopportune times and start when they are dumb good and ready, the dealer in kalkaska tells me there were no recalls and i now find there have been in the past covering the 1997 ck chev. Pkup

Windshield wipers only work intermittently, a humming sound can be heard, but wipers won't move, then they will start working again. This has been happening for approx. 1 and a half years. I researched the problem and found that chevy was having a problem with the wiper motor solder joints at the circuit board, but the local dealership insists my truck isn't in that recall, however...i am having the same problem as the recall.

Windshield wiper motor switch failed causing the wiper to stop while in use, same component has been recall in 93-96 model but not 97 model.nlm

I received a letter from gm in feb 2003 stating that if a windshield wiper circuit board would be replaced if it failed by 70,000 or feb 29, 2004.it failed at 45000 miles, but on july 17, 2005.fortunately the failure was not at a critical time! the letter clearly implies that gm felt their was a problem, however instead of accepting all responsibility they also implied that not every unit would fail.the two checkpoints were time or mileage.if, however one is not a "hard" user of a vehicle, then one would expect the mileage to be the key, not the time.this is especially true of a mechanical failure like a solder joint (proposed in this case).i took my vehicle to a gm dealer and it was not listed as a recall (it never was), and i agreed to have the work done and pay for it (it is a safety issue!).it was diagnosed as a failure of the circuit module and the module was replaced.i called gm about the issue, two pleasant people placated me but refused to accept responsibility.however a dealers agent implied that had i taken the vehicle in before feb. 29th, 2004, the module would have been replaced, even though working - clearly outside their policy.the customer complaint agent acknowledged that was the case - that it would have been replaced "if diagnosed".however if the module was still working, how would it have been diagnosed as broken! clearly gm just using time to avoid responsibility for this components failure.had the wiper failed during a heavy rainstorm on a freeway or a mountain road, where i typically use the vehicle, the results could have been catastrophic - easily resulting in serious injuries.i believe gm should have worded their letter in a way that stated their operating intent to replace the module, even if currently working.i do not wish to imply i know their motives, but it certainly seems that they were deliberately misrepresenting their intent. I would like to see gm replace every module.
