I had an accident on the hwy in georgia, the steering was hard to control/lock, the tire sled, was rust and corrode on structure, brake area, wheel area, frame, tire broke off, almost flipped and was hit from the back, and twice in the front after slamming into a cement divider and the air bags didn't deploy at all, i injured my left side, neck, back, and hip. Blessed that my pregnant daughter in her 8th month wasn't in the truck with me. I had done multiple repairs on the fuel tank, tire rod, knock sensor, abs brakes, running board, brakes, rotors, etc, and was told that the rust on the frame won't effect the trucks performance and it was safe to drive because everything is attached to the frame good. I almost lost my life and two of us got injured. If these trucks are having and been having these issues- why do they just pull all of them and give people other options.
Consumer states: while driving at the speed of 45mph was involved in a frontal collision neither air bag deployed. Dealer has been notified. If you have any additional information feel free to add.ts
Clear dry day. Accident occurred when vehicle his a side of a building. Air bags did not deploy resulting in injury.
I went off road at 45 mph airborn struck a very large tree which caused vehicle to roll over violently landing on its top. No air bags deployed, both my wife and i were ejected from the seat belts onstar was not notified. I noticed brakes acting strange just before leaving the road, they didn't slow the vehicle and didn't "click" like antilock breaks should. Vehicle was a total loss, windshield and drivers window broke, severe buckling of hood, passenger side pushed back to the tire, frame torn in several areas, duct and lower dash area displaced, sdm was downloaded showing incomplete data, sdm data does not support the amount of damage and know facts. My wife had to be airlifted to trauma cntr with serious injuries, my injuries were put on hold so that i could be with her.
Dt*:the contact stated while driving around a curve the vehicle slid off the road and through gravel into a metal telephone pole anda tree. Upon impact, both frontal airbags and theside curtain airbags failed to deploy.the contactsustainedneck and shoulder injuries along with bruises and pain.the passenger sustained minor injuries.both occupants were wearing seat belts.the vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop which determined the vehicle was a total loss by visual inspection. A police report was taken at the scene.the vehicle has not been inspected by a service dealer or the insurance company.this was the second failure of the air bags.the contact hit a deer at 65 mph at an earlier date, and all the air bags failed to deploy. The driver was wearing a seat belt and sustained no injuries during the accident. The vehicle received damage to the grill, headlights and front bumper. The vehicle was repaired by a dealer and returned to service. There were no warning indicator prior to the air bag failure in either accident. Updated 01/25/06.

While making a turn at a low speed vehicle rolled over, and air bags did not deploy. Dealer notified.
The vehicle was involved in a rollover accident in which the vehicle rolled over three times yet neither air bag deployed.the dealer was notified.*nlmthe consumer's wife applied the brakes but nothing happened, and steered to the right of the road to avoid hitting other vehicles.scc
While driving 40 mph on wet pavement, consumer applied the brakes and abs failed to activate which resulted in vehicle rolling over.. Consumer stated as soon as he applied the brakes, the wheels locked up and the back of the vehicle broke loose from the road and spun 90 degrees to the left, vehicle skidded off the left side of the road and through a fence, vehicle then rolled into a ditch, consumer also added that the front and side airbags failed to deploy.
Traveling at 65 mph passing another car switched land and rearend went out. Did 360 degree and hit the side on high way. Air bag did not deploy. It did $9000 in damage to the front end. Steering feels like its hitting another metal dealer has to grease the steering shaft every 25,000 miles factory defect but i have to pay for it after warranty ran out. Applying brake when making a turn if truck goes over a road hole or bump in the road anti-lock brake does not work and loose control of the truck. Suspension is not good.*la
1. Motor vvehicle accident2. Air bag did not deploy3.not at this point
While driving on highway, consumer's vehicle skidded from the right to the left lane.without warning the driver's side air bag fully deployed while the passenger side air bag partially deployed.consumer's visibility was completely blocked resulting in car crashing into the guardrail.both air bags deployed and were fully deflated before impact.*scc
I was changing lanes to pass a truck.as i completed the lane change, the back end continued to slide.i started to swerve left and right in my lane.as i passed the truck, my vehicle crossed over the right lane and hit the right the guardrail.i believe i hit the right rear of my vehicle twice on the guardrail.my vehicle then turned approximately 90 degrees counter-clockwise and headed straight into the concrete center divider.my vehicle bounced off the wall and ended up mostly in the right hand lane facing the traffic that was behind me.no airbag was deployed.the vehicle is classified as totaled by the insurance company.
2002 chevy avalanche's most common consumer complaint is "water leaking" into the interior of the suv. Front floors are completely soaked with standing water. Dealership has tried varied method's to fix. The reason for complaint< and please pay attention to this:not only are these reported problems inconvenient (one chevy avalanche owner reported one inch of water in the floor of his cab after an 8 hour drive!), but they could also be dangerous. On page 8-1117, volume 4 of the gm authorized service manual from helm inc. States: "caution: if any water enters the vehicle's interior up to the level of the carpet or higher and soaks the carpet, the sensing and diagnostic module (sdm) and the sdm harness connector may need to be replaced. The sdm could be activated when powered, which could cause the deployment of the airbag(s) and result in personal injury." this fact is not given to owners, and in reality the air bags deployment system has been compromised by the water leaks. This one website has over 160 similar complaints. The federal government needs to make gm accountable, find and fix the problems asap, before there is a fatality. Thank you.
My vehicle (a 2002 chevy avalanche) was involved in a total loss collision on january 18, 2006.the collision was a full frontal crash which caved in the entire front end of the avalanche.the air bags did not deploy, and the driver of the vehicle was thrown out of his seat belt due to the force of the impact.the driver ended up in the passenger seat of the vehicle.it is my belief that the air bags malfunctioned.the criteria for air bag deployment were met.there was a deceleration rate from approx. 55 mph to a complete stop.the air bag sensor was hit (as seen from the examination of the vehicle upon arrival to the body shop).the collision was in the middle front of the vehicle.general motors did an inspection of the vehicle, however, i was not pleased with their conclusion.they said that the air bags did not malfunction.they claimed that the vehicle "absorbed" the impact, which caused the air bags not to deploy.i believe that this is a huge safety issue and it should be investigated by someone other than the manufacturer, who, in my opinion, was biased in his review of the incident.

On several occasions, the 8.1l engine died at both low and high speeds (65 mph) resulting in lost of power brakes and steering.could not shift transmission into neutral. Diagnosed by dealership shop found that the crank position sensor was failing.multiple electrical diagnoses over course of failures did not show the sensor to be failing.oem replacement of senor involved complete removal and dismantling of engine.
Lights go out while drving.
Fuel pump failed 3 times already. All door electrical solenoids/cable system failed-possible poor ventilation causing excessive condensation resulting in rusting of cables.note: a friend with the same year model has exact problems and more.all costly and non-warranty items!could have been cause of accidents when fuel pumps failed but for the grace of god.
Gm had repaired the rust brake defects on my type of vehicle in manysalt states that endure cold weather.but because there was not enough outrage they did not repair this same defect in my state.there is a problem with the wheel bearings where rust causes the anti lock braking system to needless engage when it should not during slow speeds sometimes makingbraking dangerous in slow turning and parking situations.i have already spent thousands of dollars fixing these defects on my own but because of a faulty design in the system this problem has a tendency to re occur.
I'm have been experiencing several technical issues with my 2002 avalanche through years. I can removed my key when my ignition turned on to drive. My truck also reduces engine speed when driving at 45 mpg. It result for me to pull over on the interstate to reset the pcm to drive. Then my check engine light will appearon also. Then it will clear itself sometimes. Sandy sanson a gm dealership in pensacola fl where i bought the car in 2006 has charge me unnecessary for parts and labor to fix these issues. When bringing the problem to the attention of auto repair. A sale rep said my keychain can where my ignition out. He also stated that my car needed other component parts in order to fix the problem. Which never solve the main issue that i requested to be fix. I also talk to the head supervisor and got poor customer service. Furthermore, it has not been resolve at this moment. I continue to drive because my truck is the only transportation i have at the moment. I'm going to speak to the dealership again about this issues, but please assist me because i been having the same problems. That are in the headline at this moment. I written about my reduce engine speed in the past.

They later went out of business.the vehicle kept stalling without warning at all speed. The stalled engine would not restart immediately. The second dealer find the problem to be the crank position sensor right the way. The sensor was broken in several pieces. The vehicle was traded in. The complainant will try to find the repair inovice and fax it to odi.

Dt:caller hit a speed bump or a spot on the road thatraisedthe speed. Up60 or 70 mph andvehicle went completely dead. Pulled over on the highway and turned itoff.then, it started again. He\\callerstated it did nothappen in the city, only on the highway. Hetook vehicleto two different dealers. One dealer said they could not duplicate the problem. Another dealer said the problem was a negative cable. Manufacturer has not been contacted yet. Caller said that the problem started after he had the intake valve cover replaced. Caller stated thishappened 7 times. Caller believed the problem was in the electrical system.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche.the contact noticed that the gear selector lights would not illuminate in his vehicle.the vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the instrument panel needed to be replaced.the current mileage was 79,000 and failure mileage was 45,000.
2002 avalanche 1500 truck.electric brake control module, abs and brake light would come on and stay on wheni hit a bump, contacted chevy has no recall but said that module has failed and possible failure of brakes to operate correctly.spoke to a friend that owns a chevy suburban, had the same problem.my cost to replace $1162.41please respond.
Truck would keep trying to start and turn over the engine when key was in my hand and 5 feet away from cab of truck. This happened 2 more times over the weekend until i took it to the local dealer in glendoraglendora chevrolet, 1959 auto centre drive, glendora ca,909-394-9899.the dealer spent the day checking over thecomputer and starting system and could find no fault. The dealer contactedchevrolet tech assist dave johnson and he told the dealer to do nothing until it fails. The dealer was being told to give me back the truck until it happens again. I felt that the truck was in an unsafe drivable condition for any trips on the highway. I refused to take the truck back and told the dealer to keep the truck until they could find the trouble. 4 days later they found a defective ignition switch found rear glassframe cracked at top of window. Went to dealer and they said they need to keep truck for a day to replace rear glass. They said they needed to call a glass installer for a window that is shown on tv ads to be changed out by owner at any time?the dealer was richard hibbard.when truck was purchased a bump was noticed at the driver side rear bumper step about 2 feet from center of truck. The dealer was informed. They said to come back to repair it. When we went back the service dept said that it was a flaw in the bumper and there was nothing that could be done. Later we took the truck to another dealer ,glendora chevrolet, and they said the bumper was damaged internally. Wewent back to hibbard and they said that there was nothing they could do. About 7 months later the bumper failed a low impact (less than 5mph) hit by another truck. We took the truck to a body shop we worked with over 15 years and they looked at the bumper and found that the defect present at time of purchase had caused the bumper to be weakened as not to handle the low speed impact a meeting with hibbard chevrolet resulted inno action .dt

I own a 2002 chev. Avalanche, there are problems with the tailgate hinges, and locks, the starps( recall) have been replace. There is a problem with the steering box, makes a thumping noise that can be felt through the steering wheel. My complaint is that people that have same problems with less than 50k miles are having the steering, and locks/hinges repair for free, and i'm being told that because my vehicle has 80k miles i have to pay for these repairs, and if a recall is established they will re-emburse me. If it is dangerous at 50k miles why is not dangerous at 8ok miles.
Main ignition switch does not always supply power to all electronic equipment.when failure occurs the lights and alarms on the instrument panel do not function and the transmission fails to shift correctly.switch has to be replaced.
2002 chey avalanche, 67,000 miles. Engine stopped while driving on the higway. No engine light or other such warnings. Engine started but stalled 3 more times.after a total of 6 sudden engine stopsthe dealer replaced the crankshaft position sensor. This seams to be a problem with 02 avalanches.pulling out oto a busy freeway and having your engine stop could be disaterous. Also the action does not generate any codes forthe dealer to read cause costly troubleshooting .
Intermittent at highway speeds all warning lights come on. All dash gages zero out and the engine is non responsive to additional throttle. After pulling over and cycling the ignition off and back on the gages will intermittently reset and work properly.this was reported to local chevrolet dealer. They duplicated the problem in a test drive and stated it was because of a after market auto start security system. The company that installed the auto start system checked it out and found nothing wrong with the install or the auto start hardware. I had them remove the auto start hard ware, the problem manifested again. I took it back to the chevrolet dealer. They diagnosed the problem as the ignition switch. Removed and replaced switch.
The vehicle stalled.vehicle stalled out in middle of traffic.vehicle in repair shop 4 times.dealership checked idle speed and fuel pressure, engine wiring harness junction block assembly replaced.replaced tank to engine return.pcm replaced.fuel sender and pump assembly replaced. However problem still exist.ignition key warning switch was inoperative and had to be replaced.
My truck was bought new in 7/02 since.i am on my third "photo chronic heated side mirror (two passenger one driver side) the element inside the mirrors are over heating and melting the plastic trim on the mirror and distorting the glass. The result of the failure is a mirror that is blurred and a rainbow of colors. I believe this is a safety issue that should be corrected! one failure is normal but, three on a truck that only has 23k on isn't. I have called "g.m." on this problem and i was told it the drivers side this time the other two were the passenger side! left right heated mirror wiring it's all one system. In closing how many mirrors must they be replaced and what happens if i or someone else (with these mirrors) is changes lanes with distorted mirrors. The g.m. Rep told me i have 100.00 deductible this happens!
The engine will die at any time with out warning. This happens fairly often. Sometimes after trying to restart it will restart with no delay and other times it will take a few minutes. Then it will run normally for no specific amount of time. Then it will die again. Incidences may occur hundreds of miles in between. The dealer says they don't know why it would do this and it would be very difficult to diagnose the problem because it happens spontaneously and it usually restarts quickly. This is very dangerous and turning the vehicle to get off the road when the engine dies is very hard to do.
While driving at 65 mph the engine cut out.could be the crankshaft position sensor.the truck is a 2500 with an 8.1l engine.similar issues that the 2001 was recalled for.same engine and cps as the 2001 but not included in the original recall.this has happened several times at various speeds.
Exhaust leak in the engine found manifold boltswere broke.
2002 chevrolet avalanche 2500 began experienceing intermittent engine stalling while driiving at approximately 38,000 miles.condition was sporadic but continued getting more and more frequent until vehicle would not restart on june 24, 2005 with 55,000 miles on the odometer.condition stored no codes on the pcm and was not 100% repeatable.condition is the result of a faulty crankshaft position sensor which is known to gm and is particular to 2002 vehicles equipped with the 8.1 liter vortec v8 engine.this condition is dangerous due to dramatically reduced steering control and braking power when the stall occurs.someone is going to get killed as more of these vehicles reach higher mileage !!sherwood chevrolet replaced sensor on 6/27/2005 at a cost of roughly $200.00
My main complaint is that i traveled to texas in december and i had just had an oil change. During the trip i checked the oil and noticed that the oil was downabout 2 quarts or more.when i returned i took it to a gmc dealer where i had the oil changed before i went on the trip, and i was told that it had burned 3 quarts on the trip. I was advised to take it back to a chevrolet dealer where i bought it.i took it to the chevrolet dealer and there i was told that it was "normal" for it to have an oil consumption of up to a quart or more in 1,000 miles or 2 quarts up to 2,000 miles.is this "normal?"i have never had that problem with any other vehicle and i have friends that have the same type of vehicle and they have never had this problem.i have taken it back several times, and they are currently running a concumption test on it.i have had a problem from the beginning of the purchase with alignment, leaking in the box from the rubber around it, the radio not working and had to be replaced, peeling on the front dashboard, and now the oil.we took it back several times before the alignment was fixed and there was a squeeking sound in the front end.it sounded like something was broken in the front end, especially pulling in and out of parking spaces, and when turning or on the curves.we also have a problem with the back right passenger seatbelt.the person sitting in that space cannot put the seatbelt on without assistance. We finally called the customer service of general motors regarding the sound after we had taken it back around 5 times and had to rent a car, and also now with the oil consumption.we are very unhappy as this is a fairly new car, yet it's like an old runned down jalopy. They have fixed it so much, we just don't feel safe anymore.is there anything else we can do?
Truck shuts off while driving.when this happens i lose power steering and brakes.will occur at all speeds including 70 mph on the interstate.very scarey situation that could cause a large accident in rush hour.after researching this on the internet, i have found this is a problem with the make and model truck i have.the problem is the crankshaft position sensor.this should be recalled and fixed at chevrolet's expense!
Engine stalled frequently at any speed without noticed.all power steering and power brakes fail when engine stalls, creating a very serious and dangerous emergency situation.determined to be failed crankshaft position sensor, original sensor has now been replaced by modified new sensor which was put in service in mid model year 2002.ask gm as to why recall was not put in to place to replace all previous known defective crank shaft position.why was the crankshaft position sensor modified and replaced in mid year 2002, if there was such a low incidence of failure.i just experienced a $2,500 repair bill due to gm reluctance to fix a "known" potentially fatal flawed part.thank god my wife doesn't drive my truck, she wouldn't be able to steer or brake the truck to a stop.
This complaint is regarding our chevy avalanche.it was purchased in may, 2002.shortly after purchasing it, we noticed that it was consuming quite a bit of oil.we were given an explanation that the motor was new, the rings haven't seated yet and 3 different types of oil have been placed in our vehicle -- one of such (straight 30w) is specifically mentioned in the owners manual not to add.now our vehicle is still burning oil and has begun to blow blue smoke out the tail pipe.we have contacted the dealer, the manufacturer, the better business bureau, the states attorney's office.currently the manufacturer has us undertaking an oil consumption test.the body (the plastic part) shortly after purchasing (when the weather got hot) started to detach from the metal part in the fender area and the plastic panels in the back of the bed are warped.we are not happy.
1. Check engine light...2. Oil light...3. Noise still present and getting worse.returned vehicle to university motors...1. They cleared the codes and said may have been due to gas(i use bp gas) 2. Added 2 qts. Oil(oil was changed on 12/29/02@university motors and replaced the pvc valve.3. Rear locator bar was loose they tightened.*la
2002 chevrolet avalanche 2500 has a miss in the engine at highway speeds that cannot be fixed at the dealership. Chevrolet says it is "engine fade and a stiff suspension". It is a power train problem, perhaps in the transmission. It is noticeable with or without cruise control on and pronounced when climbing hills or towing any load. The dealer (larry green chevrolet in blythe ca and chevrolet)both have open files on the problem. Another vehicle from the same dealer was repurchased by chevrolet and the replacement vehicle has the same problem. All vehicles are within 100 vin 's of each other.

I have not given permission to the dealership service department to start repairs. They told me it was the rear axle or rear end that was damaged beyond repair and must be replaced. I was quoted a repair cost of $2,400 for a used part and $3,000 for a new part. This truck has around 42,000 miles and was purchased june 1, 2003.i have had multiple problems ranging from replacement ofcd's to a door windowmotor problem. I inquired/complained about a noise in the rear end at around 25,000 milesprior to the breakdown. However, they could not find the problem. The tailgate would fall open when locked occasionally, but this was adjusted after taking it back for repair.i have also replaced one hub assembly on the front of the truck at a cost of $250.00. There is an oil usage problem that requiresan additional quart to be added between changes. I personally think that this truck is a lemon and needs to be researched to discernif it has had some previousmechanical problems. Although it was purchased new there is a possibility that it could have had some malfunctions before it was delivered. I misplaced my receipts, and i'm not sure that the service department will give me another copy. However,i will search for them as verificationthat i took the truck in on several occasions for various and sundry complaints.
Vehicle began stalling during idle, then stalled while traveling at 50 mph.engine shuts off without warning.after researching on the chevyavalanchefanclub.com web site - i found information that others had the same problem.i asked my mechanic to replace the crankshaft position sensor and i have had no problems since.
(1) - normal daily driving conditions(2) - intermittent failure of the crank shaft position sensor. This causes the engine to stall unexpectedly. There is absolutely no warning when the engine shuts down. Lack of starting can be several seconds to five or more minutes while the position sensor cools enough to return to alignment and allow the engine to start. Shut down has occurred several times while in the middle of rush hour traffic. With luck i was not hit during these un-expected shut downs and in most cases was able to either get the engine started again or was able to pull of the road.(3) replacement of the sensor which chevy has since re-engineered from the original design. The old part is not available.
Traveling from texas to florida, vehicle began stalling. At times the vehicle wouldn't shift out of lower gears, at times it wouldn't start, at times it would shut off. Found dealer in florida that changed out a wiring harness in the steering column. The vehicle had less than 30,000 miles at this point. Have also had to have the engine replaced at 50,000 miles. Dealer couldn't figure out why the engine wouldn't work, nor could the dealership repair. Replaced with a new engine and is currently at 30,000 on new engine and problems starting again. This vehicle does not tow or drive off road at any time, there is a defect in this product that needs to be addressed.
2002 chevy avalanche, 5.3l engine seized up on me as i was driving and could have caused an accident as i lost power.i'm not getting any satisfaction from gm or the dealer as to why this happened.i just want a new engine.can you help?
It stalls when accelerating from a turn.mostly on right turns as you accelerate out of the turn the vehicle dies.it starts right back up, but it does this intermittently about once a week.the truck has been to two different dealers a total of 5 times for this problem.neither one can duplicate the problem.it happened again this weekend.i am afraid that my husband or another member of my family is going to get hurt in this truck.i am trying to deal with gm but they are giving me the run around.they can't do anything if they can't duplicate the problem.
Consumer states that when making right turns the vehicle stalls resulting in loss of steering control and brakes.problem is intermittent but becoming more frequent. Ts
Vehicle has problem with fuel system.either the fuel gauge goes out indicating that you have more gas than you really do.the fuel pump goes out causing the vehicle to stall.for example, i was driving up a winding hill when all of a sudden, my truck stopped with no warning on a blind curve.this created a safety issue as this incident could have caused a traffic collision.my truck has been to rally chevrolet for this problem 4 times in less than 12 months.the first time was february 2003.the second time was april 2003.the third time was june 2003 and the fourth time was january 21, 2005.there is obviously a problem with the vehicles fuel system.there is also a problem with the cooling system.every since my husband and i bought the vehicle, we have been smelling coolant after either short trips or long driving trips.there were a couple of times where once the water pump was replaced and then a freeze plug was replaced.to this day, we still smell coolant and the dealer can not find a leak.i don't think this is normal.
Dt*:the contact stated every time the brake pedal was applied the brakes pulsate.the vehicle was taken to dealer.upon inspection the front and rear rotors were corroded.the dealer attempted to turn the rotors however; due to the corrosion they were unable to do so, therefore the rotors were replaced.in a separate incident, while using the air conditioner and heater fan, smoke came from the vents.the fan was turned off and the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection.the compressor, fan and relay was replaced.
Chevrolet avalanche 2500-year 2002:engine cut off while driving-crank position sensor defect (cps). This seemed to happen almost exclusively after the truck has been sitting for at least a few hours.it startedup instantly and normally, then, asdriving down the road between 2 and 5 minutes after startup the battery light poppedon and the engine was dead. This phenomenon was not totally repeatable -sometimes it will go for a month and not happen, sometimes it will happen 3 times a day for a week.it happened twice the day before yesterday and not all yesterday.
I submitted a complaint last night (10148159) after finding the defective part to my vehicle. I searched the nhtsa sight and found many complaints with the same issue, though the person making the complaint did not know the resolution to the issue. I'm thinking the defective part that should be issued a recall for is going un-noticed by the nhtsa because the person making the complaint doesn't know how to resolve and correctly describe it. Because of this the nhtsa may overlook that this is the same issue. The following link will take you to the chevy avalanche fan club forum where the issue is described and discussed. Http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php/topic,39437.0.htmlmany of the forum members are being told by chevy dealers that the issue is with the fuel pump, which is in most cases incorrect. This is causing the consumer to pay to $1000.00 for parts and repairs that are not needed. The cost for repair of the crank shaft position sensor is $110.00 for parts and $170.00 for labor, and this resolves the problem. Please have the investigator take a look at the website given above for more information about this issue. This is obviously a defective part that if under the right conditions can cause a major accident and possible loss of life. With total loss of engine power on a 6,600lbs truck i found it almost impossible to turn and very difficult to stop. Chevy has also re-designed the part proving evidence that the original design was/is defective. I see this as a more potentially dangerous issue than the tail gate strap recall and at least as equal or higher of an issue as the anti-lock brake defect which the nhtsa has issued recalls for.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. While driving65 mph, the contact stated that the engine would stall at any time and the failure occurred more frequently on bridges. Neither the dealer, nor manufacturer were notified of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 101,000.
1. Brakes-again..pushed on the brakes and pedal went to the floor2. Noise still coming from suspension3. Can smell oil burningreturned vehicle to university motorsthey checked brakes and told me no correction was needed....suspension noise was told that was just how the vehicle sounded, i could feel the vibration on the floor...oil smell--they tightened the oil filter. *la
Consumer states that while driving at 65 mph and no warning the vehicle will shut off causing consumer to pull over and it will be hard to get the vehicle back started. This happened on three occasions. Dealer notified. Mr
My brand new 2002 chevy avalanche is burning oil and blowing blue smoke out the tail pipe.the manufacturer is now conducting an oil consumption test, but the allowable amount of oil to burn is 1 quart ever 3,000 miles!a new car should not burn oil.
Dt*: the contact stated while driving 35 mph, the vehicle stalled.after pulling over the side of the road, the vehicle was put in idle and the contact attempted to restart the engine but it would not start.there were no warning signals prior to the incident.the contact was told by a friend that they experienced the same problem with their vehicle which was the same make and model.the problem was caused because the camshaft sensor in the ignition malfunctioned.neither the service dealer nor the manufacturer were contacted.
I have been undergoing an oil consumption test on my 2002 3/4 4x4 chevy avalance for almost 6 months.the service bullitens the dealer gave me had to do with '95 or older cars or with the new car braken period.(i have over 30,000 miles on it) at first they told me the sevice dept forgot to reset the light, now they say this is normal usage,1 quart in 1000 miles. I am thinking of having a reg. Shop check the oil level as well as the dealer, because what i am reading is not what the service dept is writing on their report. One of the sevice techs told me in confidence that i am not the only one complaining about this problem but chevy isn't going to admit that there is a problem because of possible legal action. How long do i have to continue this testing before something is decided?

I recently purchased a used 2002 chevrolet avalanche 2500hd 4x4 with a 8.1 litre engine.the vehicle has approximately 51,000 miles on it.the first problem i noticed was that the engine would crank, but it would not start immediately.the next problem i experienced was that the engine shut off while i was driving it.this resulted in loss of power steering and power brakes, but more importantly, i was not able to maintain the posted 55 mph limit, and i had to dodge traffic while trying to steer my "dead" vehicle onto the shoulder.the vehicle did restart and i was able to resume as before.this has happened to me at least 4 times.thus far after 3 trips to the dealer, they have not been able to repeat, diagnose, or repair this problem.
Consumer states engine blew up, and manufacturer is not willing to take responsibility and will not provide a reason.
I bought a new avalanche in october, 2002.it has been losing one quart of oil per 1000 miles.chevrolet says this is normal?????they replaced the pcv valve, but said it will still burn 1 quart per 2000 - 3000 miles.this is absurd for a new engine.what effect will this have on engine longevity? catalytic converter?air pollution?i don't remember this feature in the advertising or sales pitch. What is nhtsa doing about this known defect? *nlm
Consumer noticed engine excessive oil consumption every 1000 miles one quart of oil. Dealer has inspected the vehicle and is under oil consumption test. Please provide further information. Ts
The engine appears to be consuming oil. At this point, engine loses roughly 1 quart of oil every 2,000 miles.gm has issued a service bulletin to dealers stating that this is within acceptable limits.this is somewhat unsettling as engine could lose too much oil which would of course lead to severe damage.dealer is currently running a consumption test.
My brand new 2002 chevy avalanche is burning oil and blowing blue smoke out the tail pipe.the manufacturer is now conducting an oil consumption test, but the allowable amount of oil to burn is 1 quart ever 3,000 miles!a new car should not burn oil.
The intake manifold is improperly sealed which causes the oil to leak.
Engine exhaust tick during exceleration, dealership service manager refuses to try to correct problem even though he says he can hear problem.
At the first of october i received a letter from onstar stating that my service would no longer be available for my 2002 chevorlet avalanche beginning jan 2008.onstar is a safety device on my truck...and was the deciding factor in choosing a gm vehicle.some other family members have 2003 gmcs and they are repairable but mine is not.i find this hard to believe..they just do not want to pay for it. I have had some trouble with my truck, eg- hardbody fading, would not pass inspection 3 years back b/c emergency brake was wore...no recall but the part was redesigned..hmmm, tailgate leaking water, a loud popping noise that took 4 long times at the dealer for them to find, but i can live with all this...but my onstar was a great piece of mind, esp with an illness and now a new baby.i will never purchase a gm again, b/c they have dumped all of us with analog service like a disease...i was told i could trade my truck and onstar would give me an additional year free!big wow...that is an insult.my truck was just paid for in august and in october i find out the big safety device of onstar is over.
Ventilation system leaked water into the passenger's compartment. As a result, water blew out the electrical system for theradio speakers.
I took my 02 avalanche in for warranty service work for serveral items.one item was not fixed to my satisfaction.i reported condensation in my daytime running lights/fog light housing.not only was there condensation, there was standing water.when i picked up my vehicle i looked and the lights seemed to be ok, but by the time i arrived home 15 minutes later, there was condensation in them again.i called the dealer to find out that they didn't replace them, they only "cleaned them out and resealed them".upon further inspection i noticed that they separated the housing from the lens and then used silicone sealant to put them back together.the dealership i took it to stated there was a bulletin from gm stating that some condensation is normal and the fix they performed was all they were allowed to do.i contacted gm and received the same information.i took the vehicle back in again for the condensation, they have now performed the same fix.i told them and the gm rep on the phone that this was a safety issue, that no amount of condensation in my light housing is acceptable.now i am unwilling to use my fog lights due to the fact i am concerned about possible safety issues with the lens and the condensation as well as the now silicone being so close to the heat of the fog lights.gm is refusing to replace my light housings, i consider this a serious safety issue.
My 2002 chevrolet avalanche has several problems.first the rear window and mid tailgate leaks into the passenger area.i have taken it to the dealer 4 times now and it is still doing the same thing.there is moisture in the daytime driving lights that will not go away.the rt rear seat belt latch is hard to latch without someone helping the passenger that sits in that seat.i have 17 inche tires with a 16 inch spare how safe is that???i have oil consumption at least 1 quart per 1,000 miles vehicle also blows black, blue and white smoke.they are doing a consumption test now.the universal joint pops when changing from park to reverse and to neutral and back.there is clunking sound when pulling in or out of a parking space turning either left or right.emergency brake goes all the way to the floor and does not work.i have had to the dealer several times and it seems nothing gets fixed.
Fog lamp condensation --- i did not notice that my 2002 avalanche was subject to water build up in the fog lamps until it was out of warranty.the dealer said it was out of warranty.i drilled a 1/8" hole with a high speed bit in the lowest part of the plastic lense.now, although condensation still accumulates on the lense it will eventually run down the lense and out the bottom hole.i was always afraid to turn them on with the bulbs being submerged in water.
While driving, the front seat back moved on its own.the driver tried to make an adjustment with seat, but it failed to adjust properly.the problem still remains, and the driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle.the vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection and the mechanic advised driver that the seat was operating as designed.the left front seat back coverbolts were loose at the frame.*sc the fog lights contained condensation.
I have had 3 broken brackets on my running lights since i bought my 2002 chevrolet avalanche. But since i have 62,000 mile on it it has now become my problem. In order to replace the brackets you have to replace the whole light. Which i have done 6 months after i received the truck for the sum of $70.00. Now i need to replace both lights for the sum of $100. Apiece. I feel this is a design defect and chevy should take care of it. Also my check enigine light has been going on once a month for three months and that seems to be my problem to. I bought the truck in worcester mass. And have since moved to maine and have to travel 300 miles to bring it back to the dealer just to be told by chevy that it is my problem. I want the consumers to beware that just because you pay $37,000 for a truck doesn't mean that the manufacuter will stick by them.
Fog lamps fill with condensation and do not dry out.
The vehicles headlights are starting to accumulate moisture.consumer states"once moisture is trap inside, the lights are less noticeable to other drivers and obstructs drivers visibility." cause is unknown. Please provide any further information. Ph
As i was traveling on the highway at 70mph the engine sputtered and stopped running causing me to lose all power assist and to coast to the side of the highway.the vehicle was towed to my mechanic where it was discovered that the fuel line had rusted out and needed to be replaced at my expense.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact stated that a strong gasoline odor was inside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic for inspection, who stated that the fuel lines were corroded and caused fuel to leak. The fuel lines were replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vin was not available. The approximate failure and current mileage was 157,000.updated 2/11/14also, the brake lines were replaced as well. Updated 02/18/14
Twice in a row when filling, gas backed up and spilled.i attributed this to a faulty pump.later that evening while parked i discovered a fuel leak. I took it to a mechanic who discovered the fuel pump had rusted and corroded away.the next day i began my drive home from florida to chicago.i made it about 200 miles before we changed drivers, and discovered the truck had started leaking fuel again. Thankfully, we made it safely to a repair shop (a national company this time). They diagnosed it as the fuel tank, located a replacement tank, and i was under way. I did make it home to chicago, smelling gas the wholeway, but not seeing a significant leak (probably due to the constant driving, i did keep checking)until i was almost home.i made it home, and took the car to a local shop. The diagnosed it as fuel lines, which had rusted and corroded. I picked up my truck last night, drove it to work today, then drove it right back to the mechanic, since it was leaking gas again.i have spent over $1500 so far in labor and parts, lost almost a full tank of gas with all the tank drops, and still do not have my truck back.im pretty sure my, mechanic is ready to give up.
When attempting to refuel the truck, the metal ring with the rubber hose behind ring is faulty in diameter which does not allow proper fuel flow.no matter what gas station this always occurs. Owner has to use a wrench or other people to assist with fueling.please describe details.
Fuel leaking from top of fuel pump feed/return pipes. Pipes where corroded and leaking fuel on to the top of the fuel pump where fuel pools until vehicle stops or accelerates at which point the puddled fuel spills to ground, or blows up under vehicle causing a potential fire hazard.
While driving at 70mphfuel pump went out, causingvehicle to stall out.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact stated that the fuel pump started to leak fuel due to rust. The insurance company inspected the fuel pump and confirmed the pump was defective. The contact is aware of the safety risk involved since the fuel leak could potentially cause a fire. The current mileage was 102,000 and the failure mileage was 101,000.
Fuel pump has quit on 3 chevrolet products over the past 4 years - each at about 75,000 miles.last one on an avalanche while driving down the highway.no accident occurred.father-in-law also had fuel pump failure on chevrolet pickup at about 75,000 miles.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact stated the brake and fuel lines was rusted and leaking fluid. In addition, the contact stated that the frame was rusted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 110,000 and the current mileage was 140,000. Updated 10/7/14
Gas tank and fuel system became contaminated with rust and was clogging the fuel injectors. Chevrolet dealer replaced 2 fuel injectors and fuel lines and cleaned existing gas tank. $1300 worth of repairs.

Very difficult to fill fuel tank. Must hold nozzled tightly against filler opening. I have complained to the dealer about this since i purchased it. They "fixed" it, but the difficulty continues.
Engine shut down completely while driving. Brakes wasn't working properly.

2002 chevrolet avalanche drivers side tail gate cable failure. Approximately 28,000 mies on the vehicle. Owner was sitting on the tail gate when failure occurred.
I released the tailgate to remove an empty box from the bed of my 2002 chevy avalanche. I jumped up in the back of the truck and retrieved the box. When i reached the back of the truck (tailgate), the tailgate gave way like a trap door and i went down with it. I hit both my knee and head on the tailgate as the tailgate hit the ground. Both cables (2) broke about 2 inches below the connector. I cut my knee and had a knot on the side of my head. Asprin seemed help, but there is still pain in the outside knee area (left). When i got to work, i pulled up the recall list. Much to my surprise, there was a recall on the very cables that severed on my avalanche. I have owned the vehicle since june 2004 and have even had maintenance performed on the vehicle at a local chevy dealership. I did not receive a recall notice on this part although the defect notice states i should have.
Pulling out from a stop, the tailgate dropped open and as a result of the cable on the right side breaking, the tailgate fell off and was dragged along by the left side cable scraping the right side of the tailgate badly.
Rear/end gate appears closed but opens periodically while driving.it scares the hell out of you and drops belongings from the bed area all over the roadway.it could cause major accidents.
2002 avalanche with approx. 40,000 miles...cannot lock or unlock the back tailgate. Took it into the dealers repair shop and had it fixed and paid for it. They were not willing to work with me on it, even though it wasobviously a defect and so close to my warranty expiration. Now at 81,000 miles we have the same problem and cannot lock or unlock the back tailgate. I am afraid that i will break my key off in the lock if i force it too hard. I had the avalanche at the same service center for recall work and mentioned that i had the same problem again..they told me i would have to pay for it to fix it again. I told them don't bother.
While driving, tailgate popped open, causing consumer to pull over to close it.*yd
Parking brake failure. 2002 z71 chevroletavalanche brake did not last a year.general brake failure. Brakes were never enough to stop car safely. Note they really fail when going over bumps. Replaced rotors twice and pads 3 times and i'm at 60k!
I own2002 chevrolet avalanche 1500 that will not pass inspection in texas due to the failure of my parking brake to keep the vehicle from moving after the parking brake has been applied, and the vehicle put into drive. I understand that a recall has been issued for vehicles withmanual transmissions that are equipped with the same type of parking brake that my vehicle has.i read federal notice dp05-009 outlining a response from a complaintregarding the parking brake failure that was due to a faulty retaining pin that gm has now corrected. The response stated that since automatictransmissions had parking pawls, a recall was not warranted. If the state of texas considers the failure of the parking brake to be a safety hazard in automatic transmissions, why does the nhtsa deem that it is not a defect.
Emergency brake failure without ever using it, makes a roaring sound when you are diving down the road. Dealer said this a problem withall the 2002 chevy avalanches and trucks, design flaw, but they would be glad to fix it for a price.said couldn't believe i haven't had a problem before now, guess its because i never use it and it just finally failed on its on. If the dealer knows this is a common failure shouldn't gm be responsible fir this?
My 2002 avalanche failed the state inspection because the emergency brake would not hold.i never use the emergency brake and the inspector said the majority of the avalalache's that he checked have the same problem.*la
The emergency brake release handle is too low to the point where consumer cannot reach brake release handle, consumer has to release brake before getting into vehicle, contacted dealer, and dealer was not willing to do anything.
Mexican assembly factory failure.there was a major failure of the rear axles and parking brake system.the rear axles had grooves worn in them and the rear bearing failed.the consumer requested reimbursement.the parking brake remained inoperative.when the parking brake was released, the acceleration would hang up and a pop would be heard in the rear, there was a rattle behind the steering wheel, and the axle seals leaked. *sc
Dt: the contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avlanche andemergency brake will not hold the vehicle. Dealer did work on this problem, and stated that it was operating the way gm designed it to work.found emergency brake control assembly defective.replaced pedal assembly.replaced emergency brake shoes and springs.

Parking brake does not hold vehicle.the brake does not lock the back wheels.
2002 chevrolet avalanche z66 has failed parking brake. I do not tow or even use the brake. However in attempting to pass texas state inspection, my parking brake fails. When brake is set in all the way, truck put in drive, truck will move forward as if brake is not set. Chevytalk.org has over 5000 post of users on this same item. Chevy ase mechanic said it's a known design flaw in the clips that causes e-brake to wear even if never used. My concern is that if i need it, due to a hydrolic failure, it doesn't work. Contacted dealer and they claim it is not part of warranty. Y understanding is that this defect existis to provide gm with a cost savings in manufacturing, but it is at the cost of thousands of drivers and thier families. Is that worth it?
2002 chevy avalanche with a non functioning parking brake. Customer states that if any of the defective vehicles were to get into an accident it could seriously injure or maybe even result in death for someone.
Dt: contact statedthe brakes had a grinding noise. Contactreplaced themon 7-23-05.he pulled the wheel off, and every single brake androtor was defective.the pads were defective. He tooka sledge hammer to get them off. There was inch pad touching the brakes, and that was the only thing stopping the vehicle. Replaced them, and he brought the parts to the dealer, who said there was nothing he could do.also, called general motors, who indicatedthat this was normal.the car only had 29,000 miles on it. Contact had abrake problem sincehe bought the car. There were more pads left on the front brakes, whichwas uncommon. The brake pads were harder than the rotors. In addition, the rear brakeswere defective. The dust covers for the rear brakes were gone .the brakes gave no warning that there was a problem. The emergency brake did not work.
2002 avalanche emergency brake isn't working and the rear end went out in it yesterday 8/10/07 at 92,000 miles.
Dt: the contact stated the parking brake on2002 chevrolet avalanche was bad. The pads were completely worn out .the brake wasnonfunctional. This happenedbecause of a defect in the design, not because of the brake. The pads needed to be changed, and the rotors needed to be sanded. The mechanic said the design was such that the parking brake will wear out even if it was not used. The contact has not been using the parking brake. He was told that the pads needed to be changed when he took the vehicle to dealer for inspection on september 1, 2005.
Complete brake failure and complete emergency brake failure. Had to downshift into d1 to slow down.
Parking does not work and cable is to long for any adjustments.
While applying the parking brakevehicle failed.there wasno braking power.consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection.mechanic determined that parking brake needed to bereplaced. Also, recall issued did not include this vehicle.
My emergency brake does not work on my 2002 chevrolet avalanche 1500 series.i went to get it inspected today and it failed inspection b/c of this problem....which i had no idea of!i am glad i found out this way.i was told that it was a common problem on chevrolets and it is quite an expensive problem to fix.i called parks chevrolet in charlotte and they want me to come by next tuesday to get it looked at and fixed.but if this a common problem shouldn't it be recalled or shouldn't the vehicle tell me that the emergency brake is not working??i think this is a huge problem.
At 8000 miles, we brought our truck in for squeaking and grinding brakes.the right rear brake was metal to metal, the caliper boots were cracked and torn, the left side was almost metal to metal and the right rotor was worn down. We went to the dealership and complained.stewart dealership in colma, ca inspected it, agreed that it was under our extended warranty. Less than 8000 miles later we brought in our avalanche & the rear brakes & emergency brake was metal to metal and the front brakes are 50%. We took the truck back to stewart who did a 28 point inspection. When we got the inspection paperwork back, it said the rear brakes were metal to metal, the front brakes were 4/32 and the emergency brake was inspected and ok..the emergency brake is gone and they said it didn't require attention!! they said its from regular wear and tear and not covered under warranty. We decided to take the truck to ellis brooks chevrolet in sf. They said that the rear brakes & emergency brake was metal to metal.they said this was normal wear and tear and not covered under warranty.
I own a 2002 chevrolet avalanche, that did not pass inspection due to the parking brake no holding. This occurred with out warning since my last inspection.i visted the dealer and they asked for mileage and stated it was not under warranty. The mechanic stated that there is no warrning system for this problem. And that this is a design flow found on this vehicle. This will cost me close to $800 for brake shoes drum / rotor assembly and brake padsi believe that a recall should be issued .
Dt:the contact owns a 2002 avalanche special edition. At 37,000 miles he heard the brakes rubbing. He noticed the inside of the rear brakes wore out, not onthe outside.the contact stated about one year ago he had the rear brakes pads replaced.in addition, the contact stated the emergency brakewore a groove inside the rear rotors. He called a dealer, and the dealer told him to bring the car in so they could look at it. The contact did not want to take the car to dealer.he took the rotors and the brake shoes off the car and took them to the dealer. The dealer told him he should have brought the car in and let them check the car out. The contact stated he has neverused the emergency brake. He didwantto pay for the new rotors because of the damage done to the rotors by the emergency brake.
You already have two investigations concerning the situation (as follows) and gm has a service bulletin out concerning the same situation but including a wider range of vehicles then just the trucks with clutches. I can forward the bulletin file if you would like to see it? gm is telling me you would have to add the other vehicles to the investigation before they would talk to me or any of the other people concerned. Parking brake when applied went to floor and did not hold upon having vehical check by dealer found adjustment to be fully adjusted and brake shoes to be worn since the brakes were never adjusted by anyone this had to come from the factory. I had to have new brake shoes installed and every thing adjusted properly for which i had to pay for i feel this was a manufacture error i think they should of had to pay for this.
Repeated failure of parking brake.have had it repaired at dealer 3 times under warranty and repair only lasts about 6 months.i use the brake everytime i park and over time it slowly gets looser to the point that it will not hold the vehicle at all.vehicle now has 41,000 miles and has fourth failure.*ujb
I own a 2002 chevrolet avalanche, that i could not get inspected due to the parking brake not holding.upon having the vehicle serviced found that a retaining clip assembly failed, causing the parking brake shoes to engage at some point in the last year and wear the shoes down, damage the drum / rotor assembly, and cause chipping / cracking with the rear brake pads due to the heat generated by the retaining clip assembly failure.i contacted gm and was told that this was not covered under warranty, and my dealer also said the same thing, that these are 'wear and tear' items that i was fully responsible for.they said that there is no way to tell if the clip had failed or if i had driven with the parking brake engaged, which never happened.i found a previous tsb was referenced to this issue (020526002a) and nhtsa# 10000172, which were similar.the tsb indicated replacing the retaining clip with a newly designed one.which tells me this was a design flaw with the retaining clip on my 2002 vehicle, which has now resulted in a costly repair (brake shoes x2, retaining clip x2, drum / rotor assembly x2, brake pads x2 (primaries) that is over $800.i've found many other avalanche and silverado owners also having this same problem, some are being covered by warranty, some are not.i feel that this should be addressed by gm and a recall issued before this $8 retaining clip part winds up costing other customers over $800.
Parking/emergency brake has failed 3 times (pedal is soft, goes to floor, will not hold vehicle).has been repaired by dealership twice, the second time with supposedly upgraded parts.complaint pending with a.g.'s office. 8nlm
There are two separate brake problems...parking brake does not work proper now or when the vehicle was new. Gm has continuously denied that this was a design problem. In addition, the anti lock brakes take a long distance to stop.(since rear brake pads wear out much quicker than front pads, it appears anti lock brakes are not applying much pressure to front pads).
1) anti-lock brake unit failed; ) park brake needs adjusting every 4 mos eventhough used daily; 2) both found in driveway; no accident3) replace abs unit at $950 ,and readjust parking brake at $80 each time.
Brakes were pulsating and took to local brake shop for check. Rear brake job completed. Left rear rotor needed replacing due to damage from parking brake. Parking brake also replaced. Service technician indicated damaged rotor from parking brake was a design flaw by gm and although chevy avalance hasn't had a recall on this flaw, the tahoe has.
Parking brake failure involving 2002 chevrolet avalanche.there was no damage or injury.however, when brought in for repair, i was given a report that states, according to chevrolet technical assistance "parking brake is not designed to hold on a down slope and only designed to hold at 8% grade on up slope."this runs counter to the 2002 chevrolet avalanche owners manual, section 7-20, entitled "parking brake and automatic transmission park mechanism check which instructs as follows:"park on a fairly steep hill, with the vehicle facing downhill" and proceeds to give steps for checking the parking brake function that create a clear expectation that the parking brake should function "on a fairly steep hill."since bringing my vehicle for requested adjustment/repair, i continue to find that the parking brake will not hold with the vehicle facing downhill on even a modest slope.knowing that i cannot rely on the parking brake, for now i will take other steps to assure safety.i am very concerned for other owners of this vehicle ... For their safety and the safety of their families.if an owner, unaware of this defect, having a driveway of any modest slope, relies on this vehicle'sparking brake ... They clearly face the risk of unexpected movement of the vehicle ... Risking damage to property or to human life.
The parking brake shoes wore through both rear top hat drum rotors of my 2002 chevy avalanche. I first noticed this problem when the parking brake did not function for the vehicles annual inspection. I do not use the parking brake, so i know that wear was not the cause of the failure. I then found this problem in tsb # 02-05-26-002 and a correction which changes the design of the clip retaining the parking brake shoe so it will not scrape without the brake being applied. The people at the inspection place as well as where i had it repaired said this was a common problem with the newer chevy trucks, suburbans, tahoes, etc. My vehicle was in the chevy shop for unrelated repairs and they did not mention or perform this tsb, nor did they notify me to have it repaired. The parking/emergency brake failed to function without warning and chevy knew about it yet chose not to inform me.
On 9/5/01, i purchased a 2002 chevrolet avalanche.the parking brake has failed 3 times since purchase.i have had the dealer repair it on 7/12/02, 8/14/02, and again on 12/20/04.the latest failure is today, 1/20/05.the brake either will not hold the parked vehicle or it will stick and not release, causing the vehicle to be immovable.the last repair also included replacing both rear axles and rear axle bearings.this has been a recurring problem and i have heard other avalanche owners with the same complaint.
The braking system on my 2002 chevrolet avalanche seemed inadequate.i have now found that only the rear brakes on the vehicle were working.in addition, the emergency brake has apparently never worked correctly.the vehicle is fairly new and only has about 28k miles on it.
Parking brake fails to hold the vehicle.pedal goes to the floor but parking brake does not engage.
Consumer states the emergency brake cable is wearing. Out.as a result, a squeaking noise is produced.
Parking brake worn out and rotor rusted at 36ooo miles. I don't use the parking brake at all. Why was it worn out? rear brake pads also wore out before front pads. Design of parking brake makes adjustment almost impossible at the wheel. The cable cannot be adjusted enough to activate the parking brake. The parts man at the dealershipjust shrugged his shoulders and informed me that the only possible remedy is to replace both rotors, pads and parking brake shoes. This seems like a design flaw.
I was driving home and all of a sudden it felt like no power was getting to the wheels. I stepped on the gas, the rpms went up, but the truck couldnt get past 30 mph. My mechanic said that the transmission burnt out. I babied this truck. Their is no reason for a chevy truck with 60000 miles of light road use should blow a tranny. A quick search on the web shows that this is a common problem with this truck. 3200 dollars to fix a part thatshould have at least lasted 100000 miles.
Transmission and/or rear axle locks up while vehicle is in motion causing erratic vehicle handling and/or life-threatening situation.* cb
At 95,000 miles, transmission exploded, replaced.1 year later, brake line exploded, lost all brake fluid, all 4 brake lines replaced as they were not made of stainless steel and had rusted.6 months later, differential bearings all worn, affecting steering, differential and related parts all replaced.all explosions took place while driving on local roads, not on the highway, thank god!mechanic (friend of mine) says he never saw any car with as many bad parts as my avalanche!i also thank god i bought it used.american engineered cars have such bad engineering design that i never buy them new.
Transfer case fluid leaking from a hole in the case caused by internal pump rub. All the transfer case oil expelled onto the hot exhaust causing smoke and possibly a fire.
Transmission/driveline failure
While driving 40 mph transmission went into reverse.consumer was able to pull the vehicle off the road. Consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection.

Transmission fluid cooler failure.
Front and rear differential bearing failure on 02 avalanche at 51,000 miles- brought to dealer before total failure.other similar complaintis can be found in the club avalanche website.this defect could lead to wheels falling off and catastrophic injury. Gm is aware of the problem but does nothing .
Transmission and/or rear axle locks up while vehicle is in motion causing erratic vehicle handling and/or life-threatening situation.* cb
Rear axle locked up and then blew up inside it's housing.
*sc
2002 avalanche with 81,000 miles at the time of the failure...started a few months ago with a very light hum in the back end.on 12/8/05 made several large clunkingnoises and died (stopped turning). The garage stated that a main bearing had broken apart sending metal throughout the rear axle and destroyed the drive system.$2000.00 job to replace the entire back axle drive system with a used one. Mechanic said no reason for that to happen with this vehicle and suggested i speak with the dealer before i had the work done. Dealer did nothing except quote me $3000.00 for the same repair and same used part.
Overtime i kept hearing a whining noise, smell of oil, heat and light vibration from the driveline. At the dealership on a 100, 000 mile total oil, transmission and coolant change (did this at 97,018 mi. 1/2/04). The mechanic did notice a bit of play in the front & rear driveline (drive shafts from transfer case to the front wheel axle case and the rear axle case), some oil leakage on the right front axle, both sides of the rear axle, this was normal he told me. Mechanic found both fine and small pieces of metal in the front 4x4 transmission case, but said this was not a big problem. Mechanic suggested that i should have the u-joints replaced sometime on the drive shafts and this would stop the noise and vibration. At coldwater, mi. (1/14/04), i had to replace a right front hub bearing; mechanic reported to me that he would like to inspect the rear axle for noise. Mechanic found some play in the driveline u-joints, right rear axle and pinion shaft, and some noise coming from the differential.on 1/26/04 i had both rear & front driveshaft u-joints replaced & balanced (fleet pride said there was some play in them). The noise and vibration stopped, but the oil & hot smell stayed. Then the light vibration and some noise (between the speeds of 40-75 mph) started to return in just 150 miles. At 106,606 miles the rear axle started to make a clunking noise and hard vibration then stopped turning at 106,607 miles. I had the rear axle removed and found that the main bearing on the left side of the mechanical locking differential (eaton g-80) had broke apart sending metal through out the rear axle and destroyed axle drive system. I have pictures of the parts & damage to the rear. The front axle is starting the same thing, leaking, hot smell and noise. I have found through your system that they have been having problems and when i asked the dealership about this, they said they are checking into it. 2002 chevrolet avalanche experiencing a loud knocking noise as well as the front end shimmies when going over bumps in the road.***no answer required***. *mrthe vehicle was taken to the dealer but they were unable to find a problem. The only problem they found was that the vehicle needed an alignment and new tires.the vehicle was taken to a tire dealer for a second opinion.when the technician removed the rear differential cover broken parts fell out.
Consumer states that the front differential is blowing out oil causing other parts of the vehicle to burn, the dealer was unable to fix the problem.. Consumer states the gear oil blows on left front brake and all the rubber hose wires, lines tires and running board making the left brake fail when wet.

Beginning on 06/09/03 and continuing to the current date, my vehicle has had a recurring front differential leak.first 3 repairs were for the differential seals, until it was discovered that the vent tube was plugged, the next 4 times for repair were due to the fact that when this vehicle is driven on a trip for an extended period of time on the highway, the front differential purges the fluid out the vent tube.the last trip i took the vehicle on was a 400 mile round trip and the vehicle underbody was half covered in diff oil, and it continued to drip for 2 days.my concern is a longer trip, which i purchased the vehicle for, would result in the seizing of the front differential at highway speed, possibly causing an accident.
Dt*:the contact stated while driving over 20mph there was a loud noise coming from the vehicle.as the speed increases or while driving over potholes the noise increases.the independent repair shop determined the noise came from the rear suspension and the driveshaft.no repairs have been made.

I had my chevrolet availableto the dealer three times to find oil spraying up on the drivers doortheyfound a crack in the front differ.said they put in some go in the crack and it doesnt need replaced.in my opion the casting in chevy avalnches are deffective and need replaced.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche.on march 27, 2007, the contact crashed into an embankment head on at 45 mph.the vehicle flipped up and landed on its side in a ditch.there was over $18,000 worth of damage.the vehicle was destroyed and the contact was injured.the side and front air bags failed to deploy and the driver's side seat belt failed as well.the contact has pictures.a police report was filed.the current and failure mileages were 78,213. Updated 04/23/08.*ljthe consumer also stated the seat belt did not lock into place as it should have. The seat belt harness broke which caused the consumer to fly forward
Front passenger seat belt restraint will lock and pin passenger without notice.passenger has to release the mechanism and fully retract the belt to get it to release usually while vehicle is in motion. *nlm
Consumer states while child was fastened in rear seat belt without any indicationbecame tight across child's chest. Child pushed the release button andseat belt retracted. Consumer cut seat belt to get child out.
Recently, i noticed that the two rear interior plastic panels that cover the metal and outer top seat belt mounts (or pivot points) in the interior rear of the vehicle have an approximatelyinch slot worn into them from the seatbelts; its apparent cause, the pulling of the seatbelts in an outward motion to place over the shoulder of the passenger sitting in the seat.i brought it to my dealer''s attention on 01/23/03 and was informed that there is no fix for the problem and that new panels would only wear out again due to constant seat belt usage and that only a re-designed or modified part would permanently correct the problem.since this was beyond the dealer''s capability, they recommended that i contact gm customer assistance and notify them of the problem and attempt to resolve the issue with them.this is currently being done.since my vehicle was one of the first on the lot, i believe that this complaint might also be one of the first of its type.i am particularly concerned because my children are primarily the rear seat passengers and i now question the seatbelt strength, particularly knowing that the edges of the belts have been constantly rubbing and abrading the hard plastic trim panels that surround them.to date, this vehicle has not been in any accidents and i am calling this problem to your attention just for informational purposes and to insure a followup by gm.
I have a 2002 chevrolet avalanche - the right rear seat belt will not latch without a great deal of effort, in most instances you actually have to get help to latch the seat belt - it appears the seat is in the way or the latch assembly is too short - evidently this is common with all 2002 avalanches - i did check out other avalanches on the dealers lot and they all had the same problem - chevrolet says that gm has no fix for this problem - this condition is very unsafe
Right rear seat belt does not stay latched and is difficult to latch.this has been happening since vehicle was first delivered to consumer.
The driver's seat was 2.5 inches to the left of the steering wheel center.which made it very difficult to maintain steering control when the vehicle was driven.also, the consumer was concerned about safety of air bag deployment.*scc
The driver's seat would move while driving at any speed. When applying normal braking consumer can hear a popping noise.the truck would jerk a litte and continue on before stopping. Also, when applying the brake at a sudden stop wheels would lock up. The dealer was notified.
When leaving the highway i applied the brakes and they immediately went to the floor, almost rear ending the truck ahead of me.i was able to limp the vehicle home using low gear and what i found out were the rear brakes.after getting home i looked underneath the front end and noticed brake fluid dripping from the front of the truck.the brake lines were horribly rusted.i can't believe in today's age that steel lines would be used when stainless lines are available.the entire brake line system will need replaced.
This is second failure of brake line. No indication other than severe rust under vehicle. Loss of stiffness in pedal when attempt to brake down hill in snow/ice. Brake light came on , needed to use transmission to control speed. Vehicle did sustain damage when unable to control speed enough it crashed into a structure. This also caused damage to structure. No injuries because most people in vehicle were able to get out. This vehicle has had both wheel sensors fail and entire hub assembly fail. The brake line has failed at about 40,000 miles but was covered by warranty by manufacture. No injuries at that time because of experienced driver behind the wheel as well as this incident as reported.
Brake pedal went to the floor upon braking. Had to downshift to low gear and apply what little brake i had left taking approximately 200 feet to stop. Luckily there was no vehicle in front of me or it would have been a rear end collision. Slowly returned home about a mile away and upon further inspection found the hard brake line right front passenger side had burst. No prior warning to loss of brakes.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact stated that while stopped at a traffic light with the brakes applied, the vehicle continued to move forward. The contact inspected the vehicle and discovered that the brake fluid reservoir was completely empty. The contact added more brake fluid to the vehicle and noticed later that there was an abnormal increase in stopping distance and time after the adding the brake fluid. The contact later discovered that the brake lines were rusted. The contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic to have the brake line replaced. The failure mileage was 115,000.
Driving the vehicle while towing a horse trailer, went to apply the brakes and didn't have any brakes the brake lines broke.
While backing out of driveway, i hit brakes, pedal went to the floor and i hit my dumpster.found that a rusted brake line burst.
Approaching a traffic light and going about 35 mph, i was planning on stopping so i was coasting at a slow speed, however as i pushed on the brake pedal to begin braking the brake pedal went right to the floor and applied very little braking.i did stop in time however if there were a car in front on me i am certain that i would have rear ended that vehicle.upon inspection it was determined that the left rear brake line broke and depleted the system.the break was caused by corrosion to the brake line. All the brake lines had considerable corrosion.the repair cost $1400 because all the brake lines had to be replaced.i feel that i am very lucky that this failure occurred where it did.i also feel that gm has a very serious problem on their hands and should be doing more to prevent this failure.i did call chevrolet customer service and received no help what so ever.i have to hope that there is a recall to get any reimbursement.this problem has the potential to hurt or even kill people.i hope the nhtsa is paying close attention and can somehow take action sooner than latter.i am more concerned about preventing injuries than getting my $1400 back.
Brake lines severely rusted, causing a burst. Emergency brake failed to engage as it was too badly rusted to work.
While backing up to connect to a travel trailer brake pedal went to floor and fluid leak developed from underside truck. Limped truck to repair station and have been quoted a price of $1,300 to replace all brake lines.according to shop owner, all of the brake lines appeared to be compromised due to premature rust and were unsafe.*ln updated 1/15/2014
Was driving on ny state thruway with wife and three small children.women cut in front of me.i pushed on brakes and pedal went to floor. I swerved out of the way and went off the road. Luckily it happened near a clearing otherwise we would have hit something and been seriously hurt and/or killed.turns out all of my brake line are rusted out and need replacement.turns out gm used cheaper brake lines and not stainless steel ones.
Antilock brake lights came on...there was a recall for "salt" belt states, however, areas that get snow and roads are salted as well such as reno, nv, truckee, ca etc and other states that have similar conditions to those that were already included in the previous recall should have been included as well.... Same problem, similar conditions.why would my area not be included as well??
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact stated while driving 35 mph, the brake pedal was depressed but failed to respond. The contact had to use the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. The dealer diagnosed that the brake line needed to be repaired. The vehicle was repaired but failure persisted. The manufacturer had not been notified. The vin was not available. The approximate failure mileage was 170,000.
10/2009: as i was driving and approaching a red light my brakes went to the floor. Almost going through a busy intersection i was able to maneuver around traffic until i came to a stop.8/2013: as i was approaching a red light my brakes went to the floor.my brake lines are so badly corroded and rusted as well as my fuel line. Total cost to fix everything is $1500, which with the value of the truck seems absurd to fix, but with the economy i can't afford to trade in and have car payments. I feel that something like this shouldn't be happening multiple times as it is costly and dangerous, i was fortunate to avoid an accident both times. I feel that these lines should have more life to them and shouldn't be so cheap but yet so expensive to fix. Something needs to be done with how "cheaply" vehicles are being made and especially something like this that can cause a fatal accident.
Was going to dinner and when we were coming up to the entrance, i hit the brakes and they went to the floor.luckily i was able to get stoppedin time and no one was in the way.the 2nd time was coming back from the outer banks.i haven't seen a truck rust out so bad before in my life.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact stated that while driving 7 mph and applying the brakes, the vehicle did not slow down. The contact stated the abs was active but the vehicle would not stop. The contact then pumped the brakes to stop the vehicle.the contact took the vehicle to a local mechanic and the mechanic discovered rust around the abs and brake drum. The mechanic stated the abs sensors needed to be replaced and the brake drums and mounts needed to be cleaned. The contact referenced nhtsa campaign i.d. 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic) and called the manufacturer. The manufacturer stated that due to the state the vehicle was registered in, the vehicle was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was 93,000.
While driving my truck and towing a trailer, i lost almost all my braking power. Had to down shift and use the emergency brake to stop. Found that a brake line from the master cylinder to the anti-lock brake module (which is mounted under the drivers seat, great place) had rusted through and blew out. Found all the brake lines are severely corroded in this area and need to be replaced. Looks like gm used inferior metal brake lines in constructing the vehicle and located the anti-lock brake module in an area that gets severe exposure to the elements. The vehicle was totally rendered unsafe with the rupture of one brake line, which indicates the system as a whole is a faulty design. I was very luck to have been able to stop and not hit another vehicle.
Driving with my children on the highway.. Went to apply the brake to stop.. Pedal went tothe floor and vehicle won't stop... Then went to apply e-brake and that failed as well... (i up keep the truck very well so this was not issue)... I was lucky enough to avoid a serious wreck... Uponinvestigation i have found all of the brake lines rusted out.. I also have researched this as a major issue... With these trucks.... Are we really gonna wait till somebody is killed?
Was driving on street from store to home when i noticed brake light on dash came on and then parked in driveway. My son went to use the truck the next day and when he pulled out of driveway to street, could barely stop. Subsequently discovered brake fluid on driveway. Checked brakeline and it was rusted completely with a hole in it. Car has been laid up and not drive-able. Rusting through the brakeline should not happen. This should be repaired under a recall.
Brake pedal suddenly went to the floor.resulted in crashing into car stopped ahead.
While coming to a stop the brake pedal went to the floor and no brakes were available. Luckily i was towing atrailer with brakes at the time which stopped the truck preventing a crash. A brief look to determine the cause revealed a failed brake line.
Applied brakes to stop and pedal went to floor. Upon inspection found brake line ruptured due to excessive corrosion. Vehicle required 100% replacement of all brake lines.
Brake lines are made out of defective materials gm knows they have a problem the lines rust out prematurely . The first one blew out i was backing in a parking space pedal went to the floor. The second one blew at a traffic light pushed on the brake went thru the red light dodged traffic .the third on the interstate traffic was stopping suddenly pushed on the pedal another brake line broke went to the floor and i managed to hit the median cross the middle and get it stopped before a head on collision with the traffic heading the other direction on interstate 81 . The rest of the under side is rust and corrosion free only the brake lines are rusted out ! .that being said gm has a repair kit with coated lines they always have in stock because they know its a major problem !!! i got a repair estimate from my local dealership $1580.00 i am replacingall steel lines . Please make them recall this is going to kill someone
Rear brake line had completely rusted and caused brake line to rupture. Causing no brakes and had to put truck in ditch to stop vehicle. Rusted line was above frame rail just above left rear tire. Found other area where line was rusted severely.
Pulling out of driveway and brakes completely went out.luckily i was only going around 5 mph.was able to use emergency brake to slow truck down next to the curb.
Attempted to stop at a stop sign.the brakes were working until i had slowed to about 5 mph.then the brake pedal went to the floor.the car in front of me had already started moving forward so no accident occurred.
Wife driving home when approaching a stop sign she applied brakes.vehicle continued through stop sign exposing my wife and 14 year old daughter to possible injury from cross traffic.wife had to pull vehicle onto grassy median to get it to stop completely since (by her estimate) brakes barely worked at all (maybe 20%).the brake warning light only came on after i had the vehicle almost to the repair facility. There was no other warning or indication that anything was wrong with the brakes before they failed.i managed to get the truck to a repair facility after noting severe leakage from one of the rear brake lines and topping off the brake fluid reservoir.waiting on confirmation from repair shop but it appears that all the brake lines are rusted to a great and will need to be replaced to ensure safety of vehicle operators.i am shocked and dismayed that the nhtsa has allowed this issue to go on without some type of notification from chevy or the nhtsa regarding this very serious safety issue.why would chevrolet build this truck with a stainless steel exhaust system yet use inferior meatl on the brake lines?
Pulling boat (22 ft ) from the boat launch to the make ready area. Stepped on brakes and peddle suddenly and without warning went tothe floor ! upon inspection of the brake lines, they are rusted and in bad shape. The brake line that runs on top of the frame rail on the drivers side and goes to the rear wheels had blown out !!
My brake line rusted and leaked.i now looked online a saw all of the gm vehicles that is affected by this.i am glad i wasn't driving, but somebody is going to be killed.i had no warning and no brake light, the line just started leaking, it is severely rusted.
Complete brake failure due to brake line rupture near rear left tire.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact stated that while driving 40 mph, the contact attempted to decelerate but the brake pedal went to the floor. The contact downshifted and applied the emergency brake to stop the vehicle. The contact was a certified mechanic and upon inspection, it was noticed that the brake line that leads to the master cylinder had rusted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileages were 61,000. The vin was not available.
The brake line that goes the length of the truck from the front to the rear brakes corroded through and resulted in the failure of the brakes on my truck. I had to steer off the road and into some brush and a drainage ditch to stop the vehicle and avoid hitting cars in front of me.
When approaching a stop light changing to red, brakes were applied moderately hard and the pedal went to the floor with severely reduced braking resulting in a stopping distance about 1 car length longer than normal.no brake warning light during this incident.i continued another mile to my destination with reduced braking.when the warning light appeared, the leak in a corroded line on top of the frame on the left side of the engine was apparent.i drove the vehicle to a chevrolet dealer about 1 more mile for repairs.
As i was approaching a stop light at approximately 25 mph i applied the brakes and the brake pedal suddenly went to the floor and i lost the brakes causing me to roll through the traffic light.fortunately no one was coming through from the other direction.it was taken to my mechanic where he discovered that the rear brake lines were so corroded that they burst when the brakes were applied.entire rear brake line system needed to be replaced at my expense.
When applying the brake to shift from park the brake pedal goes to the floor. This happened in july and november 2013, and again about two weeks ago.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph and depressing the brakes, the brakes failed and the pedal abnormally traveled to the floorboard. The contact coasted through an intersection before applying the emergency brakes to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was later towed to an independent mechanic for diagnosis where they advised him that the brake lines were rusted and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired for the brake lines. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure mileage was approximately 120,000. The current mileage was approximately 143,000. The vin was unavailable.
Was driving around the block as i had just jump started the dead battery. As i approached a stop the brakes were applied and the truck kept rolling as the brakes were spongy. As i applied more pressure the pedal hit the floor. I narrowly missed hitting a car coming from the side street. I coasted the truck home and there was fluid pouring from the lines just behind the abs module. All the lines are severely rusted.
Slowed rapidly for a vehicle that pulled out in front of me. Brakes worked fine until speed dropped to 15 mph. Then brake peddle went to the floor and brake light flashed and warning chime sounded. Limped vehicle to dealership at closing time. Awaiting estimate and cause.
Sitting at red lightall of a sudden brakes seemed to let gocar started to roll back a bit had to push brake pedal to the floor.
Brake line burst while driving at 30mph. Had two brake lines replaced. Then three weeks later another brake line popped. Had two more brake lines replaced. Total cost $900.
1.first incident: 10/14/12.catastrophic brakeline rupture due to corrosion near rear left tire resulting in complete loss of brakes2. Second incident: 10/19/13. Catastrophic brakeline rupture due to corrosion on side of frame near driver side door resulting in complete loss of brakes.
I was parking and when i stepped onto the brake pedal it went the wholeway to floor. Luckily there was a curb in front of me or i wouldhave crashed into a stored loaded with people.after investigation found out brake line rusted through. Found out you are investigating.how many years is it gonna take or how many must die before you take action.
During a recent brake job done by a dealer, on my front axle, a brake line that runs from the left to right was found to be rusted out and leaking. On further inspection, other lines were identified as having rust on them. The two lines coming directly from the brake cylinder assembly showed heavy rusting where they bend to go back under the chassis. If one of these would have rusted through, half of the braking system would be inoperable. With both of these lines, being installed during manufacture and being in the same environmental conditions, there is a possibility of both failing at the same time or shortly after the other one. If that would happen, the driver would have no way to brake and stop the vehicle.
Driving in school parking lot at 10 mph when all of a sudden, without any warning or notification from dash display, had to depress brake pedal all the way to the floor for the vehicle to stop. Braking distance increased dramatically. Went to the dealership and they informed me that the brake line ad rusted, brake fluid started to leak and all brake lines had to be replaced. Estimated cost of repairs is $1200.00 usd. All the times i took truck in for service and maintenance, not once did they recommend replacing brake lines. Did research online and mechanics and owner's of similar vehicles said that this is a design flaw and should be subject to recall.
When traveling at low speeds, >5mph, the abs activates and vehicle continues on to the point of entering traffic. This occurs frequently and without warning, at stop signs and even just pulling out of private driveway into traffic. My local mechanic ran a diagnostic test and indicated that a front speed sensor was at fault. After investigating numerous sites, i found that there was a recall issued for the exact problem on the '02 avalanche as well as other similar chassis trucks from '99-'02. And these were included in a recall of over 1,353,700 trucks under the nhtsa campaign # 05v379000. The report stated to contact gm and request authorization for the recommended repair. When i did that, the representative stated that there were no open recalls according to the vin. How does gm determine which vin is affected?is the nhtsa monitoring gm's selection process? i've own the vehicle since 6/05, and the above recall was initiated 9/05, but i've never received any type of notice that my vehicle may or may not be affected and to bring it to a gm dealer for inspection. I've had one hub assembly replaced years ago at my own expense, (i was told i had a bad bearing but they had the replacement part only came assembled as the bearing, hub and sensor). The designer must also have been the supplier. It's good that there is the nhtsa to try and keep these manufacturers accountable for the safety of the cars they produce, but with more automation in the industry to cut costs, you now have 1 worker overseeing what it took 10 to do. More and more mistakes are bound to happen. Our safety is worth more then their corporate jets and lavish lifestyles.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche 2500. The contact stated that while driving at low speeds, the abs engaged without warning. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 100,000 and the current mileage was 150,000.
Coming up to a traffic light at 45mph the light turned red ,i stepped on the brake and it went to the floor. I pumped the brake and used the emergency brake to stop the truck but not it did not stop until i was through the intersection . Luckily there was no crash. The brake line to the rear brakes was blown do to corrosion . After inspecting all the brake lines all were heavily corroded . I replaced all the brake lines with stainless steel lines. After being under the truck for a few days i can see the fuel lines will be the next to change plus the frame and drive shafts look like they came up with the titanic. I really don't expect anything to come of this , as this my way of telling gm how disgusting i find there business model of maximum profit over safety. For a few dollars more for better material this could all have been avoided . If this was toyota or honda the news media would be all over it but because it's gm we here crickets.
It's common knowledge that gm light trucks emergency brakes do not hold, even on brand-new vehicles, encompassing many year and model numbers. Do a google search.gm has issued several bulletins but no recalls.what gives and how many injuries/deaths have to occur for your department to act????
I've noticed a need for increased stopping distance for several weeks then my brake light came on.i checked the brake fluid level and it was low so i filled it up.two weeks later it came on again.brought it to the dealer and they informed me that the brake line from the brake pump to the rear brakes was blown out and needed to be replaced.after the repair i visually inspected the other brake lines and they appear to be fairly well rusted and i would not be surprised if they are the next to fail.after reading reports of accidents as a result of brake line failures, my wife and i are growing extremely concerned for the safety and well being of our family, especially our two young children, as this vehicle is our primary means of transportation.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact stated that while driving approximately 5 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and the abs engaged without warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. There was a recall related to the failure under nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic) and the contact's vin was included in the recall however, the contact's state was not mentioned as one of the salt belt states that were eligible for repairs under the recall. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000.
A guy pulled out in front of me and i almost t boned him if he didn't get out of the way, since i didn't get it stopped for another 40 yards past were the accident would have happened. After further inspection the brakeline exploded causing loss of brakepeddle pressure. All of the break lines, especially in the back, are rotted and scaling, and rotor splash guards have rotted away completely. I'm sure gm will point to mileage as a excuse, but there really isn't any rust on or under the except on the brakelines and my none existent splash guards. I drive 600 high way miles a week and expect normal pad/rotor/bearing wear and tear but this is clearly a faulty part.
Truck was at slow speed/icy snow condition. Was appx 10 mph or under. When braking the abs engaged and truck would not stop. Vehicle hit pole as vehicle would not stop. Front bumper/grille and reinforcement damage but air bag did not go off.
I was driving and my anti lock brakes locked causing me to almost hit a car one time and a co worker another.there was a clinking noise following, i found out that it was my driver side wheel bearing and speed sensor and lately a lot of gmc/chevy vehicles have been rumored to have the similar problem.$300 later it's fixed, why isn't this a safety recall?
2002 avalanche 1500 truck.electric brake control module, abs and brake light would come on and stay on wheni hit a bump, contacted chevy has no recall but said that module has failed and possible failure of brakes to operate correctly.spoke to a friend that owns a chevy suburban, had the same problem.my cost to replace $1162.41please respond.
Parking brake failure. 2002 z71 chevroletavalanche brake did not last a year.general brake failure. Brakes were never enough to stop car safely. Note they really fail when going over bumps. Replaced rotors twice and pads 3 times and i'm at 60k!
Without warning, while driving last spring, 2011 the brake line broke and i lost brakes suddenly while stopping for traffic.the dealer replaced steel brake line on left side of rear axle at my expense.today, while stopping hard in traffic, the peddle suddenly went to the floor and i lost all brakes.the steel brake line along the frame, from the front of the truck to the rear is leaking fluid from a burst in the steel line.again, no brakes.i purchased this truck in 2002 and its has always been to the dealership for regular service.
Purchased avalanche in may 2001, had accident in ocean city nj 2 weeks after owning truck. Told dealer problem with brakes. I was told it's in my head. 2003 took truck through inspection, they said may have front braking problem but passed me through to do load in bed of truck. Now have burning smell in driver front tire area after 40 min of city driving. Just read about brake recall.please contact me.
Vibration when braking.*la
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche.the contact stated that while applying the brakes at 55 mph, the brake and anti-lock brake warning lights illuminated on the instrument panel. Simultaneously, the brake pedal fell farther into the floorboard than usual, causing an increase in the stopping distance. The contact shut off the engine and upon restarting, the warning lights were no longer illuminated. The vehicle had not been to the dealer for diagnostic testing.the failure mileage was 118,000 and the current mileage was 122000.
All brake hard-lines on my 2002 chevy avalanche 1500 4wd are extremely corroded and have begun to fail.this was discovered after having one of the brake lines blow-out during an emergency stop, while driving at highway speeds.an empty truck in front of me had braked suddenly due to a missed exit, requiring that i apply full braking instantly.i would have collided with the truck after my brake lines blew, except that i was able to swerve into another lane to avoid the vehicle.had there been another vehicle next to me, i would have crashed into the decelerating vehicle.all of my brake tubing is corroded, as well as portions of the frame, brake calipers and rear brake rotors and dust shields.this excessive corrosion appears to be the result of substandard components with inadequate corrosion protection.i am currently replacing all corroded brake system components (quoted $3,100).
Dt:contact states he is having a problem with his abs. The brakes pulsate and they don't stop the vehicle.the consumer noticed the pulsation while driving at lower speeds but not as much as when he is traveling at higher speeds. This occurs during normal braking. This has been going on at some degree since he bought the car. It has gotten progressively worse. It is happening all of the time now. The brake light does not come on. There is also a grinding noise before this happens. The consumer is going to take the car into the dealer tomorrow.he has not yet talked to the manufacturer. The car has 22,000 miles on it. There has not been any kind of repair work done for the brakes.
Steel brake line failure due to corrosion (rust).upon inspection, all steel brake lines severely corroded (rusted).
Brake line rusted through and lost braking at 50 mph.

Complete brake failure and complete emergency brake failure. Had to downshift into d1 to slow down.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact engaged the brake pedal while driving approximately 25 mph and the vehicle kept going forward. The contact almost rear ended another vehicle. The contact purchasednew brakes and the vehicle has continued to accelerate. The contact never notified the manufacturer.he did contact the authorized dealer the second time the vehicle failed to stop. The dealer stated that the sensor caused the failure to occur. The contact stated that he had an extended warranty and the dealer advised him that the warranty would not cover the expenses. The failure mileage was 43,000. The current mileage was 45,180.
Anti-lock brake system stays on and took to a repair shop.they advised us that there was a recall on it.then we took it to the chevrolet dealership and they told us there was no recall.did some research on the internet and found that there was indeed a recall.chevrolet dealership not cooperating.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact stated that while driving at an unknown speed the brakes engaged, unexpectedly, and she began to hear a loud humming noise. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop where the contact was informed that the anti lock braking system was engaging involuntarily. An authorized dealer was notified and the contact was informed that the vehicle was not included in the recall associated with nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 155,000.
Sudden brake failure while driving. Upon inspection 1 brake line burst the other 3 were severely corroded and about to fail.
I was driving down the highway and came up to a traffic light that changed just as i was getting to it.i had to hit the brakes a little harder than normal to make sure i stopped in time.everything seemed fine at first but about 30 feet from the light the brake pedal went to the floor and i wasn't stopping.fortunately, no one was in front of me and the cross traffic hadn't started to move yet.i ended up not being able to stop until i was well into the intersection.when i got the truck to the shop they found out that one of the steel brake lines that run along the frame had blown out.all of the metal lines on the frame rails are very rusty and need to be replaced.the repair is estimated at $1000.00.thankfully no one was hurt but this could have caused a very serious accident. These lines should be made out of noncorrosive metal like stainless steel to prevent this sort of thing from happening.
The vehicle was involved in a rollover accident in which the vehicle rolled over three times yet neither air bag deployed.the dealer was notified.*nlmthe consumer's wife applied the brakes but nothing happened, and steered to the right of the road to avoid hitting other vehicles.scc

First time brake line under drivers door rusted out, leaked brake fluid and had to steer to avoid another vehicle stopped for a red light. Had truck towed to a shop for repairs. Mechanic told me this was common problem with gm trucks. Second time luckily i was on my property moving 1000 lb trailer around and notice brakes not working properly. Got out and looked under truck and saw a stream of liquid from around area of front axle. Took truck to nearest mechanic. I stopped by the next day and the mechanic had truck up on lift and came over to me and said "you need a new truck" he said the lines are rusted (brake, fuel and transmission). Ialso have 2002 jeep wrangler with 180k miles and have not had to replace brake lines like i've had to do with my 2002 chevy avalanche. I am the original owner of both them.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact stated that when the vehicle was driven between 25-30 mph, there was an increase in stopping distance and time when the brakes were applied. The contact stated that the front and rear brake pads, rotors and the master cylinder were replaced but the failure persisted. The contact spoke with the manufacturer and was told to take the vehicle to the dealer to be inspected. The dealer suggested that the brake pads, rotors and master cylinder be replaced a second time. The failure mileage was 100,000 and the current is 118,000. ....updated 12/03/12 updated 01/10/12
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche.while driving 20 mph, the brakes failed to work properly.the dealer stated that the vehicle was not included in the recall.there is a recall for the 2005 chevrolet avalanche.the brakes worked properly and they stated that everytime he took the vehicle in for service they would state that the brakes are fine.the failure mileage was unkown and the current mileage was 80,000.
According to my local gm dealer's service manager my problem with my chevrolet avalanche break lines rusting through and causing break failure is due to the fact that gm built these vehicles with a material that is not resistant to corrosion. Hundreds of complaints can be found on the internet regarding this problem, but thus far no recall has been made. For a few extra dollars vehicle manufacturers should be required to make this (break lines) from a rust resistant material. Gm will probably do everything it can to avoid recalls but believe me it's not an isolated problem... It's accidents waiting to happen!
I was driving home around 9:30 pm. As i was going down a hill i stepped on my brakesand the pedal went to the floor. No brakes at all, no saftey features kicked in, no warning lights. Just a catastrophic brake failure. Luckily for me it was a small hill and i was able to stop by going into low gear and using the emergency brake. I turns out that the brakelines from the master cylinder to the abs control box were rotted and finally gave out. This is a 2002 truck with 62,000 miles on it. I know from previous experience with older cars that if a brake line fails, there is a valve that is supposed to cut off the open line so there is some brakes left. I repeat, no saftey features worked, no warning lights, no valve kicking in,nothing. This is a known issue with gm. A quick search on the web brought up thousands of hits on this problem. Just 20 minutes earlier i was on the nys thruway doing 65 mph. If i lost brakes at that speed and with the other traffic, there most certainly wood have been a crash and possible loss of life.
While travelling on interstate 95 i applied my brakes to slow the vehicle only to learn that the brake system had failed. This was caused by a leak in the ridge metalbrake line which comes in contact with the cars frame.upon investigating i have learned that this condition is a known problem for this vehicle. If i hadn't tried to apply the brakes on the open highway and had waited until exiting the highway this could have resulted in a very serious multi car accident.
Brake pedal goes to the floor when applying brakes to come to a stop. This has happened five(5) times. Ts
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact stated while driving, the abs lamp illuminated. When he tried to engage the brakes the vehicle did not stop in time, as a result he rear ended another vehicle. A police report was filed and no injuries were reported. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who diagnosed that the abs module was defective and needed to be replaced. He took the vehicle to a dealer who confirmed the failure. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was not included in recallnhtsa campaign id number: 05v379000 ( service brakes, hydraulic:anti lock). The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 114,000.
Brakes work sometimes, half brakes,( were you have to pull the emergency brake to stop),or brakes go on by themselves were you have to pull over and stop and wait or cool your breaks until they cool down.( because the breaks are smoking. )problem has been going on for 7 months. 2002 avalanche. The vehicle has been in the dealers 7 times and the last time on 05/08/06 because i almost hit a child. They replaced my brake lines but brakes still lock up and go on by themselves, when you stop quickly. Gave the dealer the paper work on salt affecting the anti- lock sensors recall since i live in florida on 05/08/06 and told me in did not apply. My wife's 05 equinox went in for the exact same problems on 05/12/06 with no brakes at all except for the emergency brake and they want to replace her master cylinder. I told the dealer about the recall in the northern states and provided them with the recall paperwork and was blown off!. My truck came back today 05-12-06 with the exact same problems after being fix by the dealer.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact stated that the brake lines were completely corroded. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who verified the failure and stated that all of the brake lines needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who did not offer any assistance since the vehicle was no longer under warranty. The vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The failure and current mileage was 120,000.
Sudden loss of brakes upon brake application.brake fluid leaking from brake line where brake line connects to brakes.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact was driving 15 mph when the brakes were applied and the brake pedal went to the floor abnormally followed by the illumination of the brake warning lamp. She mentioned that the driver was able to stop the vehicle by using the emergency brake. The vehicle was taken to a local shop who stated that the master cylinder and the brake lines needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was repaired. The failure and current mileage was 230,000.
As i was slowing to down to park at a bank, brake peddle went right to the floor with almost a complete lose of braking.proceeded directly to a repair shop.i was informed that due to severe rust on underside of vehicle, all brake lines needed to be replaced as one had blown.

The braking system on my 2002 chevrolet avalanche seemed inadequate.i have now found that only the rear brakes on the vehicle were working.in addition, the emergency brake has apparently never worked correctly.the vehicle is fairly new and only has about 28k miles on it.
While driving at low speeds abs system engaged and caused extended stopping distance. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
Rear brake dust shields rusted through at 62,438 miles allowing dirt, stone, and other materials into brake system.dust shields replaced.
2002 chev avalanche, intermittent activation of abs at speeds typically below 10mph.on 2 occasions resulted in brakes not stopping the vehicle completely, required brake pedal to be pressed with full body weight to bring vehicle to a stop. Brakes seem to work normally when stopping at from speeds greater than 10mph.
Dt: contact received a recall letter concerninga defect between front hub/bearing assembly and wheel speed sensor.he took the vehicle todealership to have it repaired.now, the dealership is saying that the vehicle has excessive play in the hub bearings which was causing the abs sensor to activate. He had no problems withvehicle prior to the recall repair.he has not contacted the manufacturer.
I have had problems stopping and have had the brakes checked several times, and the brakes were not the problems. With the problem of stopping some of the times there is noise when braking in low-speed; and there were times i did not stop, but pulled to the shoulder. I was on this site looking for a recall for this problem, and there is one, but not for the state of maryland.
Consumer stated the abs failed, the pedal hit the floor while braking which caused an accident.
The driver's seat would move while driving at any speed. When applying normal braking consumer can hear a popping noise.the truck would jerk a litte and continue on before stopping. Also, when applying the brake at a sudden stop wheels would lock up. The dealer was notified.
I believe your recall system is broken. My vehicle was recalled for a brake problem. I was not experiencing any problems but i took it in for the recall anyway. The service performed was inadequate to address the problem. 3 months went by and the wheel sensors failed. When i took the vehicle back for service they said it was not covered under the recall because i already had addressed the recall. This would suggest i should have waited for the problem to exist before addressing the recall.
My 2002 avalanche has, three times this year, experienced the problem noted in the brake recall where , at low speeds, the brakes fail to apply.it is a very scary feeling and occurs mostly in stop and go traffic.the first 2 times it happened i thought i had placed my left foot sideways under the brake pedal, because no matter how hard i pushed the pedal, nothing happened. Iwas pretty sure i didn't have my foot under the pedal.now i know i hadn't.my problem is that now i hear that this recall does not include my state because we don't use enough salt or there are not enough complaints!you got to be kidding! i will guarantee gm that this will cost them huge if i get in an accident.i don't care what the extent of damage is.this is ridiculous, shortsighted and idiotic.i have contacted the dealer, the zone office, my insurance company and my attorney.my insurancecompany and atty stated that i need to keep good notes and do as much research as possible.my dealer said "bring it in" but probably won't cover it - maybe later.i still haven't heard from the zone office.my wife can't believe how upset i am over this.i am currently researching how much salt is used in the winters here.i will not stand for this.
The vehicle is a 2002 chevrolet avalanche.1]the intermediate steering shaft has gone bad twice in 61,000 miles, dealer refuses to fix. This could cause the u-joint in the steering shaft to fracture on rough roads. 2] the abs brake system has intermittent failure problems, this could cause a loss of brakes at slower speeds and cause an accident.
While driving on wet pavement at approximately 25 mph, i attempted to slow my vehicle as i approached an area of flowing water. I applied the brakes as inormally would. The vehicle did not slow up, instead, the back end began to break loose and spin around. The vehicle spun around twice and came to rest against a utility pole. The abs brakes obvoiusly did not perform as they should have. Instead of slowing the vehicle, they caused the vehicle to go into the uncontrollable spinout.
-the contact called stating that he took2002 chevrolet avalanche 1500 to the dealership on 09/29/05 for wheel inspection, at the time the vehicle's odometer read 59,289 miles.an inspection was done with invoice stating wheel sensor and inc. Cleaning was done.the contact stated that he felt that they didn't apply zinc/x to the sensor during inspection.thevehicle malfunctioned on 11/13/06while he was pulling into the driveway and the vehicle didn't stop once the brakes were applied.the contact stated the vehicle damaged the garage door.the contact took the vehicle back to dealership on the next day, and was shown that the wheel speed sensor was not in its proper place and it was rusted.the dealership told the contact that the rear wheel brake dust covers were rusted and they needed to be repaired before they would fix the problem. Also, he was havingbrake problems. The contactstated that on several occasions he had to use emergency brakes to stop the vehicle.the contact stated that he did his own research on his vehicle and found a recall 05v379000 for 2002 chevrolet avalanche for the service brakes, hydraulic: anti-lock.the contact informed the dealership of this recall, and was told that they would not repair the recall until he replaced the wheel speed sensor. The dealer would not fix the wheel speed sensor issue, if the consumer didn't have the rear brake backing plate replaced at his expense. Updated 01/29/07.
Dt:caller had faulty brakes for the last three weeks.while coming to a stop the brake will not hold and the vehicle kept rolling. Dealer said they will check it. Manufacturer has not been contacted yet. Vehicle was owned by nester brothers contractors.
I was pulling into parking spot and brake pedalwent hard. The 2002 chevy avalanche would not stop and stepped on e-brake to stop. This vehicle had 3 other failures all at slow speeds. The abs light never came on during these failures. I removed abs fuse and there have been no brake failures since. This truck weighs 5700lbs.and i say stops better without the abs fuse. At 19000 miles all 4 rotors and brake pads had to be replaced because the inside of the rotors had flaked and rusted so badly that the inside pads where down to metal. Gm states brakes are not covered on there bumper to bumper 3/36000 warranty. The abs failure occured at 23000 miles. I also deliver auto parts in a 2002 s-10 chevy pickup that has the same abs failure.
2nd time abs failed, the pedal hit the floor while braking which caused an accident. The first time was august 2002 and the last one was march 31st 2003. Each time damage was extensive and the dealer found nothing wrong with the abs
Nhtsa document 05v379000 describes the exact abs problem i have on my 2002 chevrolet avalanche 1500 truck.the current gm recall is not broad enough to consider the conditions we have in fl, and restricting this to northern states is ludicrous if this is a consistent manufacturer defect across all states/vehicles.salt air and towing a boat (ie direct wheel contact with salt water on the ramp) very possibly have led to my problem.when applying the brakes at approx 4-5 mph the abs went on and i very narrowly missed hitting a vehicle in front of me because the truck did not want to brake/slow down.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche.while driving 45 mph downhill, the contact heard a noise coming from the vehicle.he attempted to stop, but the brakes failed.the vehicle stopped when the right rear tire blew out.the contact experienced the same failure as noted in nhtsa campaign # 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock).the vehicle was towed to a shop and has been repaired.the current and failure mileages were 70,224.
While driving at 20 mph the vehicles brakes failed failed which resulted in a vehicle rollover.the vehicle rolled over three times.the dealer was notified.*nlm
Consumer stated the abs failed, the pedal hit the floor while braking which caused an accident.
When braking at any speed there would be intermittent extended stopping distance. The brake pedal went to the floor.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
Vehicle =2002 chevrolet avalanche 52000 miles -- at a slow rate of speed the brakes do not stop the vehicle and the anti locks chatter... When asking my dealer they have told me the recall does not include maryland...... I have disable my anti lock brakes for now and this relieved theproblem, but when reactivated the problem remains--will you please include maryland in your recallcampaign # 05v37900thank you for your consideration in this matter.p.s. I live in the north / west part of maryland elevation around 26000 to 29000 feet and we get lots of snow and ice not unlike the other areas of the recall.thanks again, randy.
I am entering this in regards to your investigation pe05020.this is on an incorrect activation of the anti-lock brake system in chevy trucks 99-2002.i believe my vehicle has this defect and it may have contributed to two accidents.the defect is in the anti lock brake speed sensor and occurs due to corrosion.my family has a snow removal business so i frequently use the truck in bad weather..also i lived across the street from the ocean for a year so the truck was frequently exposed to salt spray.i would be happy to let you examine the truck if you would like.i have not gone to chevy to request repair yet..awaiting advice from my insurance company.
When the brakes were applied it sounded like "crushing glass" and the vehicle exhibited a delayed response which caused the vehicle to slide into an intersection.the vehicle has been to the dealer five times in regards to the abs light.*nlm
On inspection i was told that i had a lot of corrosion (very rusty)on rear rotors and said i would needto have them resurfaced andservice the calipers and replace pads @16,934 actual miles. Very poor braking ability and not wanting to stop as should. Alsoi kept having problems stopping as should in any distance and came very near in getting into an accident. Had i been going much over the 35 miles i was i would have hit the car that pulled out in front of me for very poor braking. I then took vehicle into another dealership closer to me and was road tested they come up with replacement andthat i would need new rotors and pads front because of a lot of corrosion and rust and new rear @ 17,778 actual miles done july 22,2005 for problems spongy brakes as they were, plus the anti-lock did not seem to work right for sometime.very scared to drive my truck after couple of near accidents.. Resurfacing $110.00 plus pad kit $59.95 without taxes, labor 183.95 and $492.64 no labor charged with arrangements with other dealership.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact stated that while driving at speeds of 55 mph and depressing the brake pedal, the brakes would not engage. The abs warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact shut off the engine and disconnected the battery cable in order to shut off the abs motor. The dealer stated that the abs marginal would need to be replaced. The dealer made repairs accordingly at the owners expense. The contact stated that nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: antilock) was directly related to the failure; however, his state (florida) was not included in the recall. The contact experienced the identical failure a second time. The manufacturer told the contact that they would call him to determine if they could provide any assistance with the failure.the approximate failure mileage was 90,000 and the current mileage was 120,000.
On 7/12/05, i had my vehicle at chevrolet 73 for the brakes.at that time they informed me i needed brake pads and rotors all the way around the vehicle.they told me and showed me the "excessive rust" on the rotors.the vehicle is only 3 yrs old and only had 35,000 miles on it.i was upset that they got to that point and now it was going to cost me $1000 to replace them.all my service was performed at this dealer.after i complained they told me they would cut the price to $360. They wanted to "cut" the back rotors replace all the pads and if the front rotors need to be replaced they would "have gm pick up that cost".i was extremely skeptical about them doing the work.if they originally felt i needed to replace the pads and rotors, how could this less expensive repair be safe?i did not allow them to do the job and had it performed at another service center. This am my local paper had an article about the recall of 800,000 vehicles due to corrosion affecting the anti-lock brake system leading to low-speed crashes.my vehicle is a 2002 avalanche and is part of that recall. When i called gm they informed me it was the "anti-lock brakes sensor."my thought is if the sensor is affected by the corrosion, the corrosion also contributed to the rapid deterioration of the rotors and that affected the brake pads.this is a safety issue that should also be recalled along with the sensor.i would appreciate your help in this matter, there may be other gm owners out there that do not realize this is happening and could result in more serious crashes.
Braking distance is very long.rear brake pads wear out much faster than front pads.as an engineer, i suspect that the antilock braking system is preventing hydraulic pressure from reaching front calipers, and thereby reducing braking effectiveness.
About 2 months ago, i had a low-speed collision in heavy traffic. At about 15-20 mph i braked hard, and the anti-lock brakes kicked in, but did not stop in the usual distance. I hit the vehicle in front of me. No damage or injuries, but very disconcerting.i read about the recall on the abs systems of these vehicles, and took it to the dealer toady to have it performed. I was told my vin was not on the recall list, and did not qualify.i'm having the work done anyway, at my expense.i also just failed my first nj state inspection due to the emergency brake not holding.the brake has never been used.i also see a recall on this class of vehicle (k2500)for this item, and asked the dealer to perform this recall.i was told again this vin was not on the recall list. Again, i am having this work done at my expense. Thank you.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche.while driving 5 mph, the contact depressed the brake pedal and heard a buzzing noise coming from the steering area.the vehicle then began to pull to the right.the abs warning indicator light illuminated.the vehicle has not been inspected by a dealer.the manufacturer stated that the vin was not included in nhtsa campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock).the failure mileage was 65,000 and current mileage was 104,000.
Front brakes rattle when going over pot holes and speed bumps at any speed.rattle goes away when applying the brakes.2 dealers stated that only oem chevrolet pads can be used when doing a break job on the front/rear brakes.shop that did 2 brake jobs in 48000 miles stated that front and rear brake wear was "unusualy high" for manufacturer parts and installed aftermarket "lifetime" brakes.while the shop (thankfully) will retighten the breaks at no cost as needed, i think this is not a good answer to the prpblem.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche.whenever the contact attempts to stop the vehicle at low speeds, the brakes would pop back and forth as if the anti-braking system had been activated.the vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer and the contact did not notice any differences beforehand.the current and failure mileages were 79,000.updated 10/06/09 updated. 10/08/09
Anti-lock brakes activate at low speed when trying to stop. Happens often and to correct problem i will remove fuse from abs system.
I have a 2002 avalanche and i am really disgusted that wisconsin is not included in the recall for the abs problemi.e. Wi is not a "salt belt" state. I had a mishap on jan 3rd this year that i rear ended someone at a stop sign after they started to go and then stopped suddenly.now i'm wondering it would have happened if this was fixed.
2002 chevrolet avalanche abs recall notice...minnesota not included in recall due to salt corrosion.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact stated there was an unusual increase in stopping distance when braking. In addition, the abs would activate abruptly just as the vehicle would come to a stop. The manufacturer was contacted and advised there were no recalls on the vehicle and would not provide any further assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. Re:nhtsa campaign id # 05v37900, nhtsa action # pe05020.i purchased 2002 avalanche in late july, 2006, from fucillo chevrolet in east greenbush ny; mileage ~44,000.in november, 2008 (~55,000 miles), i noticed unwanted abs activation at low speeds as described in above references.independent mechanic confirmed.fucillo chevrolet declined to provide recall service, advising that it had already been done, notwithstanding that the problem had not been remedied.chevrolet declined for the same reason, advising that the recall repair had been done at fucillo in july, 2006, and that their obligation under the recall was to perform the recall service only one time, irrespective of whether the service fixed the defect..i then had an independent mechanic repair the defect at my expense.he advised that the recall service had not been done, as could be determined during the repair.if the recall repair was not in fact done, then the dealer misrepresented to chevrolet (and me).however, irrespective of whether the recall service had actually been done or not, it appears to me that chevrolet and the dealer have taken the position that their obligation does not extend to remedying the defect -- they apparently make no distinction between effective repair work and ineffective repair work.in either event, chevrolet and its dealer knew that there was an unsafe vehicle subject to recall and declined to remedy the defect.
I own a 2002 chevrolet avalanche z66 2wd. There is a problem within the abs braking system. At this time the abs and brake light illuminates after a period of 3 to 5 miles of travel. The brake pressure when applying the brakes is sometimes very week and sometimes even goes all the way to the floor making it extremely limited to stop even at very short stopping distances. Again, this happens at various time while driving and since i use my vehicle to drop off and pick up my family and then off to work, i feel this is a very important issue to be addressed and a recall should be issued immediately to repair this problem. This is a very good truck and my family and i love it but it has a problem that is obviously from the manufacturer and has to be repaired to keep the family together.i have been to various dealers where i've had to pay to get this looked at and they all informed me that diagnostic test concluded the rotors and pads wear are at a very normal state and need no repairs or replacements. The problems lie withing the abs system and repair cost will be sever. Looking over the internet at various site, i found that this is a vary common problem with a lot of avalanche owners, especially 2002 owners.please help. I don't want to get rid of our truck over this.
Nhtsa campaign id number : 05v379000 my avalanche suffers from this exact symptom.unfortunately i live in minnesota... And the nhtsa has decided to leave minnesota and wisconsin off the "salt belt" list.the state of minnesota uses more salt and cacl on our roads than any of those 2 states combined.for proof you can look at the bottom of my rusting truck.please add my state to this recall or at least contact me on how i can have my truck serviced under this recall.details:2002 chevrolet avalanche 2500 4x4[xxx] please contact me about what i can do to be included in this recall. Updated 07/19/2012 information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u.s.c. 552(b)(6)
About 4 years ago the abs system failed....i had to replace a part on my 2002 chevy avalanche 's abs system..again the same noise occurred and again it is the abs system..4 years ago it was out of warranty38,000 miles i had to pay out of pocket $1,200.it is at the dealer now being repaired... ..i'm sure it will be $1,200 or more...again.
Dt:the contact received nhtsarecall campaign05v379000concerningtheanti lock brakes.the vehicle is currently at the dealership getting repaired.the dealership states the hub needs to be replaced. Since the hub is not included in the recall the contactwill have to pay the deductible for extended warranty.
Dt:whenapplying the brakes there was a delay in stopping.the consumer first experienced the problemon7-15-05.the consumer took vehicleto the dealership and they told him that the abs control module needed to bereplaced.also, there wasconstant noise coming from the abs control module even when the vehicle was turned off.the consumer had to replace a battery because of this.the dealership unhooked the fuse to make it stop.the consumerexperienced the same problem that was included in nhtsa recall05v379000/gm recall 05068 . When contacting the manufacturer, they toldconsumer this vehicle was not included in the recalldue to vin.
In my 2002 chevy avalanche, when i came to slow down to make a stop approx 5-15 mph, i would apply the brakes and it felt like the peddle was stuck and i could not fully depress the peddle to stop.also the abs brakes seemed to kick on even if i was on dry pavement at this slowing stopping speed.when this occured i could not stop as quickly as i normally could with properly functioning brakes.at times if felt like i would not be able to stop at all.there was never any damage due to the failure of the breaks (luckily).a mechanic looked at the hub assembly and indicated what could be done to fix the problem.no repairs were made to the vehicle, but the mechanic turned off the sensors as he saw that one sensor was corroded.he did not look at the other sensor.
1) anti-lock brake unit failed; ) park brake needs adjusting every 4 mos eventhough used daily; 2) both found in driveway; no accident3) replace abs unit at $950 ,and readjust parking brake at $80 each time.
I pulled into my garage in my 2002 chevy avalanche and the abs light came on.i turned off the engine and a terrible buzzing noise came out of the vehicle.i determined the engine fan was not running and (after nearly an hour) discovered the abs module was running continuously.i finally disconnected the abs fuse under the hood before the whole thing caught on fire.the truck only had 55,000 but was out of factory warranty.the dealer said the abs module shorted-out internally. Only $975 later for parts and labor i had abs brakes again.gm has had documented problems with the abs on the '02 avalanche but so far has only issued a recall for northern states, blaming the problem on road salt rather than the obvious design or manufacture defect.road salt didn't cause this abs failure because we don't use it in oklahoma.the recall should be extended to the whole u.s.a critical safety part should not short out at 55,000 miles.this is a safety issue that nhtsa should address with a mandatory recall for all '02 chevy avalanches.gm refuses to acknowledge that it is a safety problem rather than a warranty issue.it was only by luck that the abs didn't go out while i was driving down the interstate.
While driving and applying brakes consumer lost the ability to control vehicle. Contacted dealer, and the dealer could not find cause of problem.consumer states while attempting to stop at low speeds while making a turn, partial steering and partial braking is lost, gm tech stated that this was the nature of the system.
Rear brake cover plates rusted. Vehicle did not pass state inspection. Consumer was concerned.
On 12/23/05 i had my 2002 chev avalanche in for a abs recall processing, where the abs system would incorrectly operate under certian curmstances when traveling at less than 10 mph.during this recall the dealer call to tell me that a very critical rear brake sheild had rusted off and must be replaced (at an estimated cost of $300).the vehicle has 52,332 miles on it.with the age of the vehicle, and milage, i do not feel "very critical" safety related components should be rusting off.
Dt*:the contact stated the rear backing plates are corroded.the vehicle is located in a salt belt state.the dealership has been alerted; however, the vehicle has not been repaired.
The braking system on my 2002 chevrolet avalanche seemed inadequate.i have now found that only the rear brakes on the vehicle were working.in addition, the emergency brake has apparently never worked correctly.the vehicle is fairly new and only has about 28k miles on it.
I own a 2002 chevy avalanche that ii am the second owner.there is less than 36,000 miles on the vehicle while we traveling we notice the brakes squealing.before we could make it home we had metal to metal and had to use are trailer brakes to help stop us.we have three children and had to travel two hours on a sunday home unsafe.we immediately took it to a brake specialist and they informed us that we would need 4 new rotors.the serviceman stated that the caliper had a problem and it burn the brake pads completely off the rotors and the rotors were junk.he also stated this is a know problem and we were not the first.the rotors were peeling.when i contacted our gmc dealer they had a gmc rep. Look at our rotors.the representative said they could not do anything about it, that the brakes are wearable and not covered under the warranty.maybe if we were the 1st owner they might been able to help us.the dealer stated this might of been a safety issue.the gmc rep said they should of had it towed. Our dealer did state they are having a lot of problems with the rotors and calipers andford, jeep, chrysler were also.we had to had to spend over $800 to get our vehicle safe.we drive our children to day care and want to be safe.i am very upset. We had to drive over two hours to get home and had to use our trailer brakes to help stop us...i am sure we will need to be replacing those brakes problem soon because of this.i feel this should have been covered under our warranty.i have never been told or even heard of anyone not covering us because we were not the original owners.why would the dealers sell vehicles state that it is still under warranty until 3 years or 36,000 miles.please investigate.*la
1. Brakes again...noise and vibration...2. Noise from suspensionreturned vehicle to university motors 1. Front brake rotors corroded with a slight lip, replaced rotors and pads...2. They said couldn't find where noise coming from, may have been from brakes...(told them no, this is the same noise since 10790 miles). *la
Intermittently at any speed when the brakes are depressedpads will not release. Consumer can feel a dragging or a degree of resistance on the vehicle.also, rear right inboard disc pad completely failed at 30,000 miles.there is a technical service bulletin concerning this subject.
Brakes on 2002 avalanche and customer service from ray hutson, lacrosse wi. Using chevrolet maintenance plan.27,821 miles - performed 6k maintenance which includes; lube parking brake, rotate tires, inspect brakes. Ok with work.30,533 miles - performed detail recondition of vehicle. Poor work.30,583 miles - repaired tailgate, complained of detail work. Picked up vehicle with no noticeable mileage but used approx 6 gals of gas. Guessing they ran the engine all day to dry out inside of vehicle.30,916 miles - completed tailgate repair. Ok34,244 miles - oil change38,085 miles - oil change and goodwrench pre02004 maintenance check list completed. Ok41,926 miles - 6k maintenance service. Found brakes and rotors bad, had them replaced, total cost was $1,321.00. At time of pickup, requested reason for this happening. Was it my fault or the good wrench plan, why were the brakes not found to be going bad before they ruined the rotors? they would let me know.2 weeks later- i called them, said they would check with gmc.4 weeks later -i called them, said they would check with gmc.3 months later, received notice for oil change. Went to ray hutson, asked about brake problem. Was told they had heard back from gmc the first week, they would not cover it as parts were not available to look at.at that time, i felt that i was not a customer worth a phone call from them.
Dt: the contact stated both rear rotors had to be replaced.the vehicle was taken to the dealership where the rotors were turned.the surface of the rotors then disintegrated, leaving the rotors useless.the rotors were replaced atcontact'sexpense.the manufacturer was contacted and they insisted thatthey had no knowledge of such failures therefore offered no assistance. I noticed brake drag/squeal on the rear brakes of my 2002 chevrolet avalanche. I took it to a repair shop and was told the rear brakes where shot ... And ... The rotors were so corroded they couldn't be repaired ... They had to be replaced.about 3 months after the repairs i began noticing brake drag/squeal in my rear brakes again. I took it back to the shop that did the repairs and was told the brakes were fine and it might just be "brake dust buildup." i am convinced there is something wrong with my rear brakes and i plan to take my truck to a local chevrolet dealer as soon as i have time.
Dt*: the contact stated the rear brake rotors were rusting and needed to be replaced.the vehicle was taken to the dealer who determined the steel part was a manufacturer defect.the manufacturer was contacted and denied that the problem was a manufacturer defect.the vehicle has yet to be repaired. Updated 10/23/2006 - the rear brake plated also rusted so badly that one had fallen to pieces.the consumer was told by the dealer that some rotors from this year were replaced before the brake pads were.
Consumers 2002 avalanche rotors corroded prematurely which led to having the rotors and pads replaced. The consumer received recall # 05v379000 which was in reference to the rotors after the rotors were already replaced.based on the consumer's research he believes that the rotors on the vehicle's sold in the salt belt were not properly treated with a corrosion inhibitor.the rotors on the consumer's vehicle had to be replaced after only 28 months of use.the premature rotor corrosion led to premature corrosion of the backing plate on the right rear.
Dt*:the contact stated while driving 45 mph on normal road conditions extended braking distance was observed. The problem was due toheavy corrosion of the brake rotors.the four rotors had been replaced twice.the vehicle has been operated in a salt belt state. The rust cracked the metal creating a worsening failure condition.updated 11/3/2006 - the consumer feels that the rotors were made of aninferior material.
# 1-july 05---e brake and foot brake went to the floor boards..rear rotors replaced because they were rotted,000 miles 3 and 1/2 years..inferior metal was used.........#2was told by chevy i must anticipate all stops and turns..step on brakes sooner burn them out quicker..7/30/053 people in truck & the ac on,driving in jersey, almost had three hits. Truck wouldn't stop under quick stops or last minute turns by people in front of me. Found out the 2003 on up have hydraulic in stead of vacuum. Why did i not get a recall or a retro fit notice to have thebrake system work off hydraulic and have the rotors replaced because of inferior metal..chevy charged me $ 100-plus for a diagnostic that made no mention about rotted rotors , but for $500 plus theydid say they would cut the rear rotors new pads and shoes-- because the system is called brake in a hat!!!!!!!
2002 chev avalanche failed nys inspection all brakes had to be replaced i have only 29879 miles i think this is very excessive the vehicle has never towed or plowed i use it for camping and other vacationing replaced were the followingfront brake pads and rotors/ rear brake pads and rotors/ rear e brake shoes, all parts were replaced because of major rusting of all iron old parts not available.i was told by inspection station this is happening alot .

Excessive rear brake wear. Front brakes show little to no wear. Never have my front brakes worn out before the rear. Everybody i've talked to agrees with me that there is a real problem. It appears thet the rear brakes are the major stopping power not the front.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet avalanche. The contact stated that a strong gasoline odor was inside the vehicle. Dt:chevrolet avalanche 2002.contact states the brakes pulsate; the pedal goes to the floor, and does not have braking capability.this does not happen all the time.neither weather nor road conditions seemed to affect this problem.the vehicle was repaired twice, but problem recurred.chevrolet replaced the rotors, brake pads as they rusted and or flaked.*scthe consumer believed the problem was with the brake booster and not the rotors.
Due to vibration, brake line broke. Right rear brake line broke in half while driving. *kj
*sc
The dealership (tom benson) is claiming that both my mirror distortion and the vibration in the steering wheel are characteristics of the vehicle. Nlm

Clunking in heard under hood and felt in the steering column. Have had that for 2 years and now finally saw other avalanche and chevrolet owners with the same problem, and personal mechanic even referenced the problem to a tsb for my vin. Dealer plays it off that they have to charge for inspection by mechanic and they won't replace it because its past warranty. (bill heard chevrolet). Nothing has done to fix it, unsure if any mechanical failure will result from it. Involving the steering column must have some possible issue.
Sudden power steering pump failure after 50,000 miles - this also caused steering box to fail because of filings from pump getting into steering box.
While making a turn at a low speed vehicle rolled over, and air bags did not deploy. Dealer notified.
Sudden power steering pump failure after 50,000 miles - this also caused steering box to fail because of filings from pump getting into steering box.
Dt: contact stated whilesitting at a stop sign and then when he pulled out there was nopower steering. There was no noise, there was no indication that anything was wrong. He took vehicle tothe dealer and the saidthat the power steering pump shaftsheared off inside of the pump. This happened about 8-12-05.
I was on side of hill in grass and mud, my power steering went out, and i almost bit the bullet.my neighbor a gm mechanic said they replace them all the time, i called the dealer which he worked and they said they never heard of the problem (service manager).this is dangerous and a joke....i researched and found others with same problem at this site that have avalanches also.please helphere is the site with some others , they have several thread about it this is just one:http://www.chevyavalanchefanclub.com/cafcna/index.php/topic,51094.0.html.
(1) there was not any specific event, i was turning down my driveway when the steering immediately became extremely heavy and the wheel could not be turned.(2) i could not turn the wheel or stop before hitting my trash containers at the end of the driveway.(3) power steering pump was replaced. The shaft had broken inside the pump.
Front windshield make a fluttering noise at speeds greater then 55 mph.took motor vehicle to dealer 8 months ago they replaced the molding and they were fine to about a month ago. Now they say they don't have a place to road test it that they can do 55 mph. *nlm
Removed mid-gate glass on 2002 avalanche to clean and noticed that plastic around mid-gate was separated from itself.window had never been out before.
Water has leaked inside the passenger compartment since purchased.the dealer has attempted to repair the problem for over a year.the manufacturers legal department recently advised the consumer that they will make no further repair attempts and that the leak is deemed reasonable/acceptable.*nlm
Consumer states his midgate is leaking (water is coming in).consumer has taken this truck 4 times for the same thing. He said this time will be the fifth time, and is asking chevrolet to take the truck back for possible buy back.nlm
Water leaking into bed and passenger compartment.water leaked for 6 months, went to dealer.dealer discovered leak due to carpert being saturated with water under back seat and side rails at the b-pillar.dealer replaced carpet and pad and supposedly fixed leak due to bad seal.1 week after receiving truck from the dealer we discovered the new carpet saturated with water under back seat and side rails and now the front driver side carpet.preparing to return truck to dealer since this was discovered on saturday.truck has 35000 miles.
Popping noise when turning coming from under cab at drivers feet and passengers feet. Transmission cross member bolt holes in frame have stretched horizontally and allow crossmember to shift side to side. Also front body mounts pop when turning causing stress on front mount bolts. ** chevrolet said this is normal and the only patch they have for the popping at the transmission mount is to put washers both sides and the same patch for the body mounts.** note pictures are available of the stretched out holes.
A fluttering noise from the lower drivers side windshield support pillar area at appx. 50+ mph or when driving against a strong wind.the noise sounds like it is coming from the engine compartment and resonates thru the pillars plastic cover..
Water leak discovered again for the fifth time.dealer has replaced carpet and pad on previous repairs and new seals were installed.was dry for about 6 months.carpet under back seat is soaking wet again.i am extremely tired of this malfunction in design, causing such issues.the bed stays mostly dry, and honestly i never expected the bed to be dry 100% of the time.however the interior of the truck should not be wet under any circumstances.dealer has explained how the keep the drain channels clear and it does not help at all.
Bed of truck is leaking everything gets wet.it is also leaking into the cab of truck> this was a concern when i purchased it and was assured there would not ever be a problem. Have had it to dealer here 2 times and still leaking. Have whooping sound from sun roof in open position,if i hold up on it, it stops.this i was told could not be fixed.springs are just too weak.
Water is leaking into the cab, through the mid gate.eventhough the sales person told me the compartments were all water tight and would not leak.i have complained but the service person tells me that what i should have been told is that the compartments are water resistant not water tight.something needs to be done about this!!!
Water is entering the rear floor area when raining.
Discoloration of cargo covers and body armer.
The handles to the bed covers have deteriorated completely off. Not all of them as of this writing but soonthey all will fall off at the connection at the side of the bed. The corrosion is happening rapidly. I rarely take them off, so it is not from wear and tear. I do not haul things in the bed that would bend, leak, or crack them. I live in north east texas approximately an hour east of dallas. There is a white corrosionthat is eating the metal. Since this is a non salt air state and a non road salt mixture state (maybe 1xa year which i do not drive if road conditions call for street treatment) it is not that. I rarely drive the truck, for i do not work, i take it to the store, about 4 miles away and i take it to dallas every now and then. The safety concern is my handle failing and one of my bed covers comes off while i'm driving. The coversare heavy and fairly large. I don't think they would fly far but i wouldn't want to run over one of them.i have the covers off at this point for obvious reasons but the truck was not designed for them to be off.the wind whips the truck unexpectedly and you feel like you have little control and i associate this withthe amount of weight that is gone off the truck that was designed to keep the truck weighted appropriatelyfor safe driving conditions. It is not the blowing wind but the wind created as the truck picks up speed, the multi axle trucks also cause it to actually move up and over when they pass my truck on the highway.it is an insecure feeling and is not conducive to confident driving. When the wind is blowing it is hard to keep the truck on the road along with the other factors it feels like it will take flight. The covers are the weight that keeps the truck from being blown out of the lane your driving in. Thank you for your time and considerations. Sincerely, corroded bed cover handles,tx.
Water leak is coming though under midgate inside ofvehicle. Water runs thoughfootboard andvehicle smells.dealership is aware of problem.
Vehicle was engaged from park to reverse and slowly moved back and hit a friend's car and the entire bumper broke. Insurancereplaced. It cost $1200 dollars. Dealer notified.
Theproblem in question is a 2002 chevy avalanche. There are problems with water getting into the passenger area, soaking the floor. This constant water causes the air bag sensor to corrode. The sensor is located on the floor under the drivers seat. I have had the sensor replaced twice. This will continue to happen for as long as the avalanche is prone to this problem. If the sensor becomes faulty and causes the truck not to deploy or possibly deploy accidentally there could be damages, injuries and possible loss of life.
Dt*:the contact stated there is extreme water intrusion into the driver's side, passenger's side, and the rear driver's side doors.the vehicle was taken to the dealership the problem is with the seals in the doors.the manufacturer has been contacted.

Defective cable supports for the tailgate on my 2002 chevrolet avalanche.
While loading a riding lawn, the cable broke in half.refer to recall campaign. *sc the consumer had the cable replaced at a local dealer with the same type of cable that broke, until the stainless cable arrived, he then called the manufacturer who stated they would not replace it free of charge because the vehicle identification number was not included in the recall, however the consumer received a recall notice in the mail.
The tailgate cables on my 2002 chevrolet avalanche broke while i was unloading a freezer from the back of the truck.
I have a 2002 chevy avalanche.the driver side cable that supports the tailgate snapped while i was standing on the tailgate.luckily the passenger side cable held or else i would have hit the ground pretty hard, not to mention damage to my tailgate.the cable appears to be completely corroded.
While loading a 4 wheeler onto my 2002 chevy avalanche, both tailgate cables snapped and the tailgate completely fell off. The 4 wheeler, myself, and the ramps that were on the tailgate all fell to the ground. The dealer replaced the tailgate cables, but the damage to the tailgate has not been remedied. I have contacted gm and they are working the issue, but it has not been resolved.
When i bought my chevrolet avalanche new in 2002, as i left the dealership, i heard a horrible crash and found that the dealer had not latched the rear tail gate.it takes a great amount of effort to close it properly.since then , on about 10 occasions, the gate has fallen down while driving.approximately 1 week ago, i found that the left side cable had broken. I was going to call my local dealership today, but , on my way to drop my boys off at school, the gate once again fell down.i stopped and asked my 13 y.o. To slam the gate.when he tried to do this, the gate bounced back into his face and jammed.when i got out and looked, i saw that the right side hinge was dislocated, the right bottom of the gate was damaged, the left rear taillight was broken, there was a gouge on the left edge of the gate, and a minor paint scratch on the gate near the gouge.i remember hearing about this problem during the last couple of weeks and did a search & found this site.i am hoping the dealer or manufacturer will stand behind this defect and pay for my repairs.thank you.gary bosco.
While loading the vehicle both tailgate support straps snapped.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
One of my tailgate cables broke abruptly while i was climbing onto one corner of the tailgate.the corner dropped enough that i was dropped back to the ground. (i weigh about 185 lbs).i then inspected the other cable and saw no evidence of a problem, but when i leaned on that corner of the tailgate, the second cable also broke.i called my dealer, but since i was out of warranty on mileage, i was told that it would not be covered and that there were no service bulletins.i then opened a file with gm field service, and have not heard any response.
Tailgate cable broke without warning.
While driving 35-40 mph tailgateopened, causing cables to break. Tail gate fell off vehicle while still driving.
While letting the tailgate down on my 2002 chevrolet avalanche, the tailgate cable on the left side of the bed disintergrated with no load or undue stress.
Both my tailgate cables snapped at the same time on my 2002 chevy avalanche on a boy scout camp out.two of the fathers (about 400 lbs) were sitting on the tailgate when they both snapped.lucky that they landed on their feet and did not get hurt.both look like they are black and corroded from the inside.snapped at the same place on both cables. *la
Vehicle was parked in front of the driveway, driver pulled down the tailgate, andcable snapped in half.consumer was ableto lift the cable upand put it inside of the trunk area.both cables were still attached to the body of the truck.consumernotifieddealer about the problem.
The tailgate cables on my 2002 chevy avalanche unexpededly broke while a friend and i were unloading a home gym. Both cables snapped in the middle at the same time.this resulted in the tailgate dropping and my friend and i almost falling with the home gym on top of us.i slightly strained my back but we had no significant injury.luckily we have good balance.
In feb of 2004 i submitted a complaint (#10058789).it was about my tailgate that fell completely off with me on it.there is damage to the tailgate still and i talked to a dealership about it one year ago.they were supposed to get back to me and then i let it fall by the waistside.i need help pushing them to repaint my tailgate, and replace some plastic molding.how do i do this?they don't seem to think it is their issue.the tailgate is damaged due to the defective cables that they had a recall on.
Tailgate cables failed while i was unloading back of avalanche.i fell to the ground, along with computer equipment i was carrying.both tailgate cables broke and tailgate fell off truck.damage to tailgate paint, molding and latch assembly.dealer quoted approximately $900 worth of damage.
The tailgate cablesbroke while consumer was standing on top of the tailgate.as a result, driversustained major injuries, and was transported to ta hospital by car. Consumer contactedthe dealer, and was informed that the tailgate cablesneeded to be replaced.*tc
Tailgate strap on my 2002 chevrolet avalanche has broken. Dealer is refusing to fix saying my vehicle is not in recall.was built in september 2001.
The tailgate cable broke while two persons were sitting on it. Consumer had to take the vehicle to the dealer for tailgate to be inspected on anhtsa recall04v129000.
Dt: contact stated power windows were messed up. About one year ago the passenger's side power window stopped working. He took vehiclet to the dealer ,and they changed something on it and fixed the problem. On 8-17-05 the driver's side window stopped working. Also tailgate just dropped open. He said someone worked on it last year and it worked for a while.but currently it was messed up again. It has gotten progressively worse over the past year.

Three families and there kids went to a lake in arkansas. One day we decided to go down to the lake on a gravel road.four teenage kids decided to ride on the tailgate. Together they all weighed under 600 pounds. While driving down the gravel road @ about 5 mph a heard a pop then voices then a thud and i looked inmy rear view mirror and noticed the kids on the ground. When i stopped to get out, i also noticed my tailgate had fallen off completely. I went to the dealer andthey refused to fix my tailgate, but replaced my cables and my tailgate handle which had been damaged. I tried gm, but they told me that the dealer was there eyes and ears. The dealer felt likethe tail gate was overloaded and that had caused the failure. The dealer had told me that these type of cables had broke all of the time. A year went by and gm had issued a recall on all of the these type cables.i went back to the dealer to see if they would fix the scratches on the tailgate and they said no. I went back to gm and they told me that the dealer was their eyes and ears and they would not fix my tailgate. I believe if the cables failand you have any load on the tailgate it is likely that the tailgate can come off. The tailgate has no pin to secure it. If the cables break and the tailgate is at the right angle it will come off. If a tailgate comes off the truck on the highway i see this being a very dangerous scenario. I feel the dealer is neglecting their responsibility to stand behind the product. Also this all happened under warrantywhen the truck had 30,000 miles.*la
While stepping onto the tailgate it snapped. Dealer stated that the vehicle was recalled under tailgate recall 04v129000.consumer's hip bone was injured.
Tailgate straps are wearing out prematurely.
Cables that hold up the tailgate on thr 1/2 ton chevy avalanche rusted and broke while i was leaning on the tailgate.i fell to the ground and was not injured.my sister-in-law also had a cable on her 2002 1/2 ton chevrolet pickup broke
Tailgate was down because both of the tailgate support straps snapped.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
While driving 55 mph the tailgate door fell off. The cause has yet to be determined.
The consumer experienced problems with the tailgate releasing and had it repaired by the dealer twice. The consumer received a recall letter on the tailgate for the straps. The manufacturer was contacted about the problemand made the additional repairs to the tailgate which released even when locked with a key. 04v129000.. Tailgate cable snapped on a 2002 chevrolet avalanche while loading atv. Cables snapped in the middle of the cable and not at ends. I was assured by sales representative that the tailgate can handle the weight of an atv. The the truck bed has an atv tread embedded into the mat to add traction while loading and unloading. I believe the cables need to be recalled and corrected before someone else is injured. I was quoted an estimate of $123.00 to fix. I want the manufacturer to pay for the damage since it resulted in a manufacturing defect.
Both of my tailgate cables snapped while unloading an atv. Luckily i was not injured when the atv, ramps, and the tailgate all fell when both cables snapped at the same time.2002 chevy avalanche 2500 4x4

While traveling on a state 2 lane highway at high way speed, the spare tire dropped from it's storage area under truck bed. The rear window frame is breaking off of the glass.the frame and/or glass could become a projectile in the event of a crash.these stress fractures in the window frame occurred with the window in the installed position and i first noticed them on sunday march 21, 2004.i have only removed the window once and that was over a year ago.the vehicle has never been in an accident and had approximately 45,000 miles on it when i noticed the fractures.this is an obvious manufacturer defect however when i took the vehicle to the dealership i was told that this was not covered under the warranty.i contacted gm customer service and was basically told the same thing.i believe that this defect is serious enough to warrant a recall.
Consumer states that when it rains water is coming from the mid gate off the vehicle and weting up the inside, as a result of the way it is design. Had vehicle serviced 8-9 times for the same problem. Dealership unable to fix problem ts
Poor customer service on chevrolet avalanche defect from eldorado chevrolet in mckinney, texas. Cold air on passenger side due to poor sealingat time of purchase. I'm a single parent that never rode on passenger side until warranty was out. Body repairman, john griggs, led me to believe that my insurance was dragging their feet onrepairing the concern after an accident that cost over $10,000 in repairs. I requested john to call me on the concern. He called my insurance agent and stated it could not be caused by accident. He stated it was a problem with some chevys and that they were not sealed correctly or have a bad actuator. Brian northington, john's boss, offered to split the cost of $240 to seal it correctly since my warranty was out. This is a chevy problem from go. Brian stated twice in a condescending voice he was so sorry that i didn't have an extended warranty that would have taken care of the problem that was there when the vehicle was purchased! their so called "customer service" stinks! this is just another way to bilk more money from consumers! i made a mistake of purchasing a 2004 tahoe from eldorado chevrolet last year. What a mistake to do business with them! they don't get it: sometimes, they win, but they really loose!! i had been savingpoints on my gm card, because i was considering a new purchase. Eldorado chevrolet has soured me on a gm productsever again! don't they understand what "do the right thing!" means? oh, i forgot, they're idiots. Why try to sell a vehicle when you can shaft someone out of $240 and loose them as a customer forever? where do they find these guys? idiot college?

I suspected that the front shocks were defective; the front end would bounce excessively when pusing up/down on bumper when parked.after second trip to dealer; they agreed to change the front 2 shocks but said that i would have to pay for the repair costs because they did not believe that the shocks were really defective.after the repair and road test, the dealer agreed that the shocks were defective and submitted as a warrenty claim.my problem appears to be the same as complaint #10017067.
While driving consumer heard a loud popping/clicking noise coming form the front/rear.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
The left front wheel bearing on my 2002 chevy avalanche exploded causing the wheel to fall off the truck.this happened while going on the expressway in houstion texas.there was no warning.i was able to get off the expressway and out of traffic.once i was stopped, all of the bearings and parts of the assembly fell out on the ground.all that was keeping the wheel on was the brake disk. The truck had only 63,000 miles on it at the time and had never been driven in any abusive conditions.a new wheel bearing assembly and hub was installed by a firestone tire and brake shop located on the katy expressway.i have the old parts from the repair job and allowed my chevy dealer to look at them.the rep said there is nothing for them to do since i am 28.000 miles over the warrenty.
At 19,000 miles the passenger side wheel bearing separated from the vehiclewhile driving 10 mph. As a result the front end collapsed.
The vehicle's suspension is not adequate for pulling a boat & trailer weighing no more than 3500 lbs with a tongue weight of no more than 300 lbs. Although all info given by chevrolet says the vehicle will pull 7,100 lbs with a tongue weight of 1,065 lbs. Max.while pulling any boat & trailer(we hooked up several trailers) that fall under these max. Weights, the vehicle violently vibrates at any speed.dealership hooked same boat & trailer up to comparable avalanche with same results.dealership admits the problem is in the suspension, but chevrolet claims this is not a defect.
Dt*:the contact stated while driving over 20mph there was a loud noise coming from the vehicle.as the speed increases or while driving over potholes the noise increases.the independent repair shop determined the noise came from the rear suspension and the driveshaft.no repairs have been made.
Standard tires issued with vehicle were offroad wrangler hp which have very poor rain handling capabilities. I was not notified of this or given option of switching to highway tires with better rain capability. As a result of the poor control of vehicle in rain, front edge was damaged when entered parking lot and was trying to turn on wet pavement and slid into wall when steering was non-responsive due to tire sliding instead of turning. Speed was less then 10 mph. I have found several articles on internet indicating should either replace those tires or have them "siped" to achieve better control in rain. Since my avalanche is two wheel drive i never thought much if any about offroad use or that the standard tires would be so geared up for offroad use as to make them handle poorly in rain. Capitol chevrolet service manager confirmed this information with me. I have 40 years experience driving in the north under all conditions with military and civilian vehicles and have never had this kind of problem before with any vehicle with any kind of tire. Military vehicle tires are very offroad oriented but never had this kind of problem in rain. Thanks.

While driving at any speed, consumer heard a loud noise coming from the steering wheel. Vehicle was taken to an independent shop, and the technician found the left and right front tiresas well as the left rear has bubble and inside wall are cracked. Dealer was notified. *la
Passenger tires were supplied with z71 off-road package.i took these tires off-road, and tore a hole one.all4 tire dealers in montrose, co including the goodyear dealer, said that these are passenger tires, not off-road tires, and that they will be damaged by taking them off-road in the mountains. Chevy's photos on their web page show the avalanche fording streams, driving over rocks, and driving in the mountains.the owner's manual discusses driving over rocks and logs, "bouncing the car"and having one or more wheels off the ground as things that might be encountered in "off-road" driving.still, they deliver the nearly 3-ton truck with passenger tires, not light truck tires. Had i not punctured the dire, but only separated the ply, i could have had a serious accident driving the 400 miles back to my home.the off-road package includes skid plates, heavy duty shocks, a tow package, the all-important z71 decal, and upgraded tires.it turns out that the upgrade is not to a stronger tire, just a tire that's 1 inch bigger.still, the implication is that it is suitable for the off-road use described in the owner's manual and in their advertisements.the safety issue is that these tires are more susceptable to damage when used of-road, and subsequent to failure later at high speed when the driver returns to the highway than tires more appropriate to the task, such as a light truck tire.
I do not understand why the full size spare is firestone 265/75r16 vs the four goodyear tires size 265/70r17.using different size tiresis not recommend in the owners manual so why would they give you a spare that is different from the other tires & do not mention any hazards.
Vehicle has four goodyear 17 inch tires, and for thespare tire there is a firestone 16 inch. Consumer is concerned.consumer states that gm will not solve the problem.
Wrong size spare tire on avalanche.
While drivingat normal city speed emergency spare tire fell off on the street. Tire bounced twice and hit another vehicle. Dealer stated thiswas unusual, never heard such thing.
Fourprimary tiresare 17" inches.however, emergency spare tireis 16" inches.a mechanic informedconsumer it would be unsafe for him to operate vehicle using16" spare tire in combination with a 17" spare tire onsame axle.please provide any additional information / attachments.
Truck came through with 17"wheels and 17" goodyear tires, the spare tire is a 16" wheel and 16" firestone tire. My truck is a 4 wheel drive, if i would have to use this spare, i feel it would be unsafe putting different size wheel and tire on my vehicle,. I have a complaint into the chevrolet customer service, but they said that they won't do anything about it, that this is the way this vehicle comes through, i was never told this by the dealership, i also complained to them, and they haven't done anything yet. My complaint no. With chevrolet is (05525998), the person i spoke to was named christine. The telephone no i called was 1-800-222-1020.
I have not experienced a tire failure yet, but i have concerns on the spare tire that came with my vehicle. The 4 main tires are goodyear wrangler hp 265/70r17 and the spare tire is a firestone wilderness at p265/75r16.the owner's manual specifically states to use same size tires & type of tires.the spare tire should be the same as the premium tire package i upgraded my package to... Not a smaller size without any warningof what damage it could do to the vehicle if you used it for an extended period....i think they should have the same size spare.if not, at leastinform you of the potential damage one could do to their vehicle or person. (tiresize: p265/75r16)
Spare tire in the vehicle is a different size then the one on vehicle.tire onvehicle is 17 inches and spare tire is 16 inches. Contacted dealer who is not willing to do anything. Consumer adds owners manual states that mixing tires could cause loss of control while driving.manufacturer is aware.

While driving 40 mph consumer heard a loud noise coming from the rear.consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and pulled over. Consumerinspected the vehicle, and noticed that the spare tire was not in place.vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, andmechanicdetermined that the cable assembly needed to be replaced.
While transporting two kayaks, at 107 lbs., the roof rack pulled loose from the roof.dealers owners manual says the roof rack is good for 200 lbs.dealer replaced rack, but would not repair damage to vehicle door when failure occurred.
Vehicle doesn't come equipped with the door ajar warningfeature.consumer feels this is unsafe, cause while driving with their infant in the back seat, the passenger side door was ajar, and consumer wasn't aware of it.the child could of fell out of thevehicle. Please provide more details. Ts
My complaint is that you do not list the chevrolet avalanche in your recall list. *nlm
While reversing vehiclehit a lamp pole.upon impact, vehiclewas stuck in full throttle. Vehicle failed to move because it wasalready propped against the pole.
Cruise control stopped working at 36,000 miles. Thought it was a blown fuse so i had it looked at by the dealer service department at approx. 40,000 miles when i had it in for another problem. Service center told me it was a bad chip and it would cost us $500.00 for a new one. They were not willing to work with us or contact gm to see if they might assist with the repair since it happened so close to the time our warranty expired.so we still have no cruise control on our "$40,000 dollar" vehicle!
The transmission light illuminated about five minutes while cruise control was activated. *ph the illumination lasted also, until the speed reduced to 40 miles per hour.the gas mileage increased during this time. *sc

2002 chevrolet avalanche. Failure of rear window frame, producing two points of separation. Glass is intact, frame associated with rear defroster.

The windows on my 2002 chevolet avalanche are very dark shaded. I called a dealer in mullins, sc and he told me there is nothing they can do to lighten them. He claimed they came from the factory that dark. At night i cannot see well enough to properly judge traffic and distance. When i turn at night i have to lean forward just to see the street i am turning on to. I'd like to find out how i can get a lighter shading on my windows before i have or cause an accident. Why can't they be lighted or toned down.
The frame on the rear window of my 2002 chevrolet avalanche has begun to crack and break off.although still in place at this time there is a 1/2" crack that is widening in the passenger side upper corner and cracks in the lower corner that look like the plastic is tearing itself apart.it is subject to leaks since it no longer forms a tight seal and if the frame breaks off completely the window will no long be held tightly in place and could fall from the frame onto passengers in the rear seat.i don't know when the cracks actually began but only noticed them recently.i am the original ower and only driver of the vehicle.chevrolet was notified of the problem under service request number 1-292479540.their answer was they would not cover it under warranty as a manufacture defect.i only received their decision today so i have not had time to locate a replacement part as yet.
Dtthe contact stated the vehicle hadleakage coming from the rear of the vehicle, it was leaking into the vehicle.this only happenedwhen it rained. It leakedfrom rear passenger's side up to driver's side door panel, it smelled of mildew. Thiscaused the windows to fog up. Contact took the vehicle to the dealer severaltimes, the last time the leak stopped and the dealer had welded sea clamps. This had started onjuly 15, 2003.
After using the rear window defroster for a short period, a loud crack was heard.the plastic frame holding the rear window split in two pieces.the rear window is now somewhat loose.we are afraid to turn on the rear window defroster for fear of the window shattering. We will not try and remove the window and place it in its holder behind the seat, as it may also shatter and shower the rear seat passengers with glass.
Rear window frame starting to split. Talked to dealer and they stated that they have seen 5 others do the same thing. Chevrolet should recall this defect design.*la
Power windows quit working first right front then left front about a year later.
Dt contact stated the driver's side power window stopped working. The window would not roll down more than an inch from the top.there was noforewarning. The dealer replaced regulator assembly. The window works properly now.
The dealership (tom benson) is claiming that both my mirror distortion and the vibration in the steering wheel are characteristics of the vehicle. Nlm
Dt*: the contact stated the oil inside the driver side exterior heated mirror seeped out causing a blur.the dealership determined the mirror needed to be replaced.
The drivers outside mirror is showing double images.auto-dimming mirror has been replaced by dealer 3 times and still has same problem.mirror does not show double images if replaced with standard mirror. Mirror was not doing this when purchased new in 8/02.
When driving up to a drive-up atm machine, my wife folded the passenger side-view mirror toward her so it would not hit a post.after completing her transaction, she unfolded the mirror to it's regular position, and it broke.the mirror did not fall off, but had to be tied on to the arm, so it wouldn't sit crooked.
The consumer was unable to see out of the side view mirrors when the vehicle was in reverse, he stated there was a blind spot. Notified gm and they refuse to pay for repairs.
My complaint is on my 2002 chevy avalanche.the drivers side external mirror has been slowly leaking the fluid that is inside of it and now the mirror is so discolored by the problem that it is unusable.the replacement mirror is about 320.00.the chevy dealership will not replace it as a defect but want me to pay for it.no damage was the cause of this failure.this truck has never been in any type of accident.
When you open the sun roof you get an awful noise inside the motor vehicle because the wind deflector doesn't go high enough. Took to dealer they said install a exterior wind deflector at the cost of 115.00this came on the motor vehicle and should work properly. *nlm
We purchase vehicle new in aug 2001.it now has about 75,000 miles. Starting in july 03, tthe windshield has shown a propensity to chip and crack with very minor impacts.it now has a total of 4 chips each abour 1/4" diameter and a crack about 15" long.we have refrained from having it repaired.why is this windshield so easy to damage?

Gm had repaired the rust brake defects on my type of vehicle in manysalt states that endure cold weather.but because there was not enough outrage they did not repair this same defect in my state.there is a problem with the wheel bearings where rust causes the anti lock braking system to needless engage when it should not during slow speeds sometimes makingbraking dangerous in slow turning and parking situations.i have already spent thousands of dollars fixing these defects on my own but because of a faulty design in the system this problem has a tendency to re occur.
