We were involved in an accident where we hit another vehicle and then rolled. The air bags never deployed at all and my husbands seat belt let loose before the vehicle had stopped.
Service air bag light came on. Research online and found that this is a very common problem and should be recalled for safety reasons.
I was involved in an accident on 02/22/2010. A very large ice chest flew out of a vehicle several cars ahead of me on the highway. Traffic was going around 55 - 60 mph. The first car slammed on their brakes, trying to avoid the ice chest. The car behind crashed into them and so on. I was the last vehicle in the collision. I stood on my brakes and made every effort to stop before crashing into the truck in front of me. I crashed into the back of the ford f-250, inflicting minimal damage to their tailgate. The front of my avalanche was crushed. It was a full front crash - with a little more damage to the driver's side than the passenger side. The front tire on the driver's side was cut in the crash. The passenger side a/c vent was jammed by the accident. I had injury to my c-spine, knees, arms, chest, etc. The air bag should have deployed. I was wearing my seat belt, so i didn't hit the windshield. But had that failed, i would have been more seriously injured. The avalanche is in the body shop now. There is no warning light, code or other indication of a problem with the air bags. At this point, i have no faith in my air bags in the event of an accident. I'd rather not wait for a fatal accident to prove that there is a problem.
Air bag warning light remain on at all times now. Has been an habitual problem with this model year vehicle, yet multiple dealers are unwilling to help with this obvious safety issue.
2004 avalanche service air bag light stays on. Read numerous forums and this should be fixed at no charge due to a safety issue. A lot of chevy owners are experiencing the same problem.
I got in my vehicle to come home. Put the key in the ignition to start the car and as i did, the driver's side air bag exploded in my face. I had not even put the car in gear yet.
I had jumped my dead battery and left the truck running. About 10 minutes after being jumped, the driver's airbag deployed. The vehicle never moved and was sitting idly in park and nothing touched the vehicle.
Takata inflators airbags and gages on dash. In an accident airbags didn't released.
I have a 2004 chevy avalanchewhich i bought new that was involved in a t-bone collision at approx. 35 mph across the front end of the vehicle . The air bag did not deploynor did the shoulder harness latch even though i had my seat belt on. I feel this may be a safety concern so i am making you aware of this.problem since i was injured .the car i hit had pulled out of a shopping centeracoss in front of me it was a chevy cavalier , which i hit on the drivers side between the front and rear wheels.
Vehiclehad multiple occurrences of air bag warning light being displayed. Thefirst episoderequired three visits to replace driver's side air bag restraint module andcoil. Second episode required two visits to replacecoil again!), and i have lost faith in the vehicle's ability to properly manage air bag system.
Speedometer has become erratic at zero to 120 mph at any given time or any where inbetween truck running or setting still. Will be traveling down the road at flow of traffic and speedometer will be zero to 120. This is very dangerous. Gmc or federal government needs to issue a recall. This is a problem common to gmc chevy products silverado truck, impalas, and avalanche vehicles 2003 to 2005.
The speedometer on my 2004 chevy avalanche does not work properly. When i am going 25 mph it indicated 80 mph. Sometimes when i am stopped the speedometer indicates 30 mph. Basically the speedo works sometimes, but i cannot rely on it to drive safely-at any speed, because i do not know what speed i am actually going.
The vehicle's abs and brake lights are on.i took the vehicle in for repair and a state inspection.the part to repair the abs and brake light are on national back order with no definite availability date.the truck is not usable because of the failed state inspection.
I have had problems with my dash cluster it pins itself at high speed and the amp gauge and temp gauges stop working too i had this problem just after buying it and it had 125000kms on it and chevy said it was over the kms too be covered to me their should not be a time frame or mileage set too have them replaced ...please let me know if their is anything that can be done ...thanks
Vehicle looses power and brakes go out then dies, doesn't matter speed. If slowing down and press the brakes, the locks, lights, and security goes crazy. This is dangerous as it is in intersections and caution for collision. The vehicle has to be off for a time frame and restarts fine and can go. Happened when coming from ramp and in middle of road with semi truck coming down by us.
Upon start up of the truck, the abs light stayed illuminated and started chiming at me. Everytime i start the truck this happens. I had my brakes inspected and they were fine. I currently do not have abs. I took the truck to a mechanic this last week and had it looked into. It is a known problem with the chevy avalanche and they informed me that there is a part for this problem but it is on indefinite backorder. What and how does that happen? the abs system is throwing fault codes stopping it from working properly but there is not a part to replace it. Per chevy!
Speedometer began working erratically and then not at all.dealership replaced "stepper motor clutch".charged for labor only.
Oil pressure and water temperture gauge's pegged out to the high side and will not return to normal.
2004 chevy avalanche 1500 2wd spedometer became erratic and stoped working. The problem was first noticed with the tachometer acting erratic, it stopped actin funny and then the speedometer began acting crazy and then stuck.
Speedometer failure in chevy avalanche.it is a common problem and is widely discussed on the internet, yet no recall.2004 chevy avalanche z71.
Was driving my 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500 down the road, when i noticed that my speedometer was acting funny. Was moving erratically in upward increments of one mile per hour, while sticking and jumping on each increment. Then, it just flat quit!not knowing the mechanics of my vehicles speedometer (ie; speedo cable, electronic, or what have you), went online to search this out.found out that there are many, many of this incident happening with consumers. Seems that gm refuses to recall this, even though it seems to be a very common problem??have read that this can cost upwards of $600 to repair? just bought this truck/avalanche (used) from a dealer in portland, oregon.can i get any help with getting this repaired? from my understanding of what i have read (online), there are several "step motors". These step motors are apparently a poor (design) product, and are the same for the speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge, etc. Also read that because they are all built by the same manufacturer, that (eventually) they will all fail? it is my contention that gm is fully aware of this, from the information obtained (online).i am hoping that this will be repaired for me, free of charge, thru gm??how do i know how fast i am going?what if i get a ticket? what if my other instruments fail?
Windshield wiper will not cut off.left side of dash blows hot air while the right side blows cold air when air conditioner is on.
Driver side power window stopped working, locked in closed position.nothing leading up to it.happened in oct 2007 (1 month out of warranty).finally took to dealer for repair in oct '08.dealer replaced motor and regulator $588 cost.complained to chevy in dec '08, they said small plastic part had failed but since it was past warranty and i waited 2 months to complain, there was nothing they would do.they also said it was a known, infrequent problem and they were redesigning the mechanism.
The instrument panel on my vehicle is displaying the incorrect information for fuel level and oil level.this is occurring at startup and continues while i drive the vehicle and is a constant problem.nothing has yet been done to correct the problem but feel that the manufacturer should assume financial responsibility of correcting the malfunction.
Speedometer failure, dealer will not replace part even though is clearly a factory problem issue as well as a safety issue.
I own an 04 chevrolet avalanche and the tbc2 fuse always blows. So i have no dash lights to show me my speed or anything.i have read up on this and lots of these trucks have the same problem with wires rubbing and shorting out. As well as the service air bag light comes on as well which i think is another thing with wires being in a bad spot and shorting out.
I own a 2004 chevrolet avalanche. My speedometer cluster recently stopped working all together. I have called the chevrolet place and they are saying it will be very expensive to fix. Then one told me that there was a recall on this. But it was for 7 years or 70 thousand miles. I just bought the truck and it was over the mileage when i purchased the vehicle. What can i do to get this fixed, with out breaking my bank.???please help me out on this......
The speedometer had stopped working on my 04 avalanche. Not realizing this and traveling at night with no traffic i had gotten pulled over for speeding. Once i had stopped and noticed the gage was stuck at 60mph i showed it to the officer and he let me go. I realize there is a recall out for this if the vehicle has less than 70k miles but i am over that because of the amount of driving i do for my job. This could be a serious problem and should be covered for a longer period of time, or all clusters should be changed because they will fail at one point.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500. The contact stated that the speedometer functioned erratically. Most recently, it was stuck at the highest speed. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that he was responsible for repair costs. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. The current and failure mileage was approximately 85,970. Updated 5/9/11 updated 05/18/11
The speedometer on my 2004 chevrolet avalanche indicated a rising speed while, in fact, i was decelerating to try to meet the speed limit (i thought).the needle continued until it was completely off the scale while actually doing about 65 mph.now, at a stop, it registers about 45 mph and varies with actual speed.
Speedometer has quit working, i have recently found this to be a common problem with many different gm vehicles and they are covering it under a recall and my vehicle is not included, yet i have the same issue?
Instrument cluster on my 2004 chevy avalanche has stopped working.the failure occurred while driving down the road.
In may 2012 i bought a used 2004 chevy avalanche 1500.about two months later, i noticed issues with my speedometer.i first noticed it on a small trip where i was traveling about an hour or so, then all of a sudden, the speedometer dropped to zero.i pulled over for a minute to see what might be wrong, and it seemed that after the truck was shut off for a bit (need to cool down??), it started working ok again.this has happened several times since then, not usually on short runs, but more when the truck has been running for a while.another issue with the speedometer was when i was hauling a small utility trailer, and going up a hill, it did it again.someone told me to check out recalls and i found this site where i see that many, many others are experiencing the same, or very similar issues.if there are so many with these same types of issues, why isn't the manufacturer doing anything about it, or at least investigating it?i am military, and i cannot afford any type of motor vehicle violation on my military record, nor can i afford a speeding ticket...just like everyone else.my permanent address is tyrone, pa, but i am stationed at ft. Benning, ga where i bought the truck.since i live in barracks, i've listed my permanent home residence in pa.phone contact number is good, and any mailings should go to the address provided below.
The speedometer in my 2004 chevy avalanche has gone haywire!! when i'm going 30 it reads 100, and sometimes when i'm going 20 it reads only 10 mph.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500.while driving approximately 70 mph on normal road conditions, the speedometer displayed inaccurate readings.the failure occurred without warning.the vehicle has not been taken to an authorized dealer for a diagnostic.the contact was concerned of the safety risk involved. The failure mileage was 39,800 and current mileage is 40,000.updated 3/3/09 updated 03/04/09.
The speedometer on my 2004 avalanche (cluster) is failing.it reads 120 mph when it is idling and shows the same when im doing 60-65 mph.i bought the car used (with 25,000) and currently it has 108,000.this is ridiculous! its a common problem thought the state, why isn't it being replaced free !
Speedometer quit working.
The speedometer in my 2004 chevy avalanche starting sticking - and now reads any were from 45 - 65 when i am at a stop and over 120 at times, very sporadic operation of speedometer can not determine true speed of travel.
First incident of speedometer intermittently working occurred in september 2005. Was taken to dealer, and quoted to fix but was not covered under warranty. Other cluster gauges began failing completely over the past few years. Finally the voltmeter gauge completely fails this year. Entire cluster is completely inoperative now.
The speedometer in my 2004 chevy avalanche is malfunctioning and does not show the correct speed of the vehicle. I notice a lot of other consumers are having the same trouble. What is your organization doing to pressure chevrolet/gmc in making good on this faulty product?
2004 avalanche speedometer malfunctioning with 36000 miles. I have done a search on line and have found numerous complaints with the same problem.
I own a 2004 chevrolet avalanche with 46655 miles and on or about october 31, 2006 the speedometer began acting erratic.the speedometer registered past 120 mph and locked while driving on i 95 at 70 mph.i know the speed because i was following a family member and was talking on the cell phone at the time.when i arrived at my destination the speedometer remained locked past 120 until i unhooked and re-hooked the positive battery cable at which time it returned to 0.speedometer worked for about a month then did the same thing, i subsequently repeated the battery procedure until i talked to my local chevrolet dealer who without even looking at the vehicle said that i needed to replace the gauge cluster and that it was a common problem.when i returned to the big country chevrolet in hemingway, sc and they ran the diagnostics it was determined that the cluster needed to be replaced for $380. After researching this problem on the internet i found that this a very prevalent complaint that chevrolet is not addressing but is charging consumers $375-1000 to correct but is not taking any responsibility for installing a substandard speedometer cluster.i have read all about the class action suits lawyers are advertising but i am not interested in making money for lawyers.i am a retired police officer and paid, what i believed, is a lot of money for my vehicle and i'm not sure who to turn to other than your agency.i would like to know if there is any ongoing investigation into this problem or anything being done to force chevrolet into taking responsibility for this dangerous situation.i look forward to your response.
The speedometer on my 04 chevy avalanche stopped working. It is pegged out at 120 mph.
Speedometer has been acting erratically.
The speedometer on my 2004 chevy avalanche is not working properly.sometimes it sits at 0 when i am definitely going faster than that.when it does start moving, it isn't keeping the correct speed.i purchased the vehicle in june of 2009 and noticed the problem in july of 1009.
On the 2004 avalanche z71 the speed gauge gets stuck therefore making a safety hazard. Not been able to know your speed could end up deadly.
The speedometer on my vehicle sticks and does not reflect the actual speed of the vehicle.
Rpm gauge, speedometer, and tilting sideview mirrors (while in reverse) doesn't work all the time. The speedometer doesn't read accurately and sometimes the needle doesn't even register a speed. One evening the speedometer was registering 35 mph and i was doing at least 55 mph. That same evening i came to a four-way stop and at acceleration the speedometer didn't work at all the remainder of the trip home. The rpm gauge was the first thing i noticed wrong with my truck and then the sideview mirrors. Sometimes while backing my mirrors won't tilt down.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500. The speedometer would show that the vehicle was traveling at different rates of speed when the vehicle was parked. When driving, the speedometer would fluctuate so he had to use gps to find out how fast he was driving. The vehicle had not been inspected at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was approximately 46,000. The current mileage was approximately 50,200.
My speedometer and tachometer on my 2004 avalanche is very erratic, to say the least.on several occasions, the speedometer indicated higher or lower speeds than what i was actually going.the first time i noticed it was on a rainy day when the speedometer indicated 65mph, but afer later comparing the tach to the speedometer, i estimate i was actually going about 80mph.some times it indicates 0 mph and some times it gets buried over 120mph.this is a significant safety factor and should be recalled and fixed by the manufacturer before someone gets killed or seriously injured.
Speedometer failed to keep accurate speed.
The speedometer on my 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500 2wd works erratically.when driving, it fails to work accurately on and off.this can lead to excessive speeds.general motors seems to ignore the hundreds of these complaints and has not issued any accurate repair instructions or a recall.
1 speedometer became erratic and now there is no movement of the speedometer at all. Unable to determine speed. Dealer informed me this has occurred often on 2003-2004 gm trucks and suv's.
My 2004 avalanche speedometer no longer operates, it says i am going 120 miles per hour and 70 miles per hour when stopped. I checked a web site and this seems to be a standard problem with this vehicle and i think this should be a recall.
2004 chevy avalanche..speedometer registering 55mph...running approx. 75mph to 80mph...or more....when decelerating...moves downward in clicking motion..accelerates in clicking motion...there is constant clicking/ticking noise behind panel..called gm...will not acknowledge issue...insulting as i am gm stockholder...had considered this year's trade to hummer...now considering foreign...no wonder they are in trouble...claim have to replace entire instrument panel at excess of $400 ! this is a safety issue in the truest sense of the word !
The cluster isn't working system states charging at 30 volts, tested with meter 14 volts, also speedometer states that i am doing 65mph while at a dead stop.
Speedometer began working erratically and then not at all.dealership replaced "stepper motor clutch".charged for labor only.
The vehicle's speedometer was sticking for about 5 miles.then, the vehicle's speedometer stopped on 60 mph permanently.the speedometer has been stuck at 60 mph and poses a signifcant safety hazard.also, several other owners have had the same issues with this model 1500 series chevrolet pick-up truck.
Around 37,000 miles, the speedometer on my 2004 chevy avalanche went erratic.the truck was 1 month or 1000 out of warranty.this has led to inaccurate speeds which is posing a danger problem to my young teenage drivers.they do not know how to regulate their speed using the tachometer like i do.i have not fixed it yet because i thought something as important as a speedometer would have been recalled.it appears that their are thousands of these late model gm vehicles that have the same problem.
I have a 2004 avalanche and it has been working great for the last 4 years. Recently within the last 6 months my speedometer had been twitching and sticking on a certain number. After a few weeks of that. It finally got stuck on 15 mph. I called gm and they stated that they know it is a problem, and they have allowed for a special circumstance replacement for 7 years or 70,000 miles. I am over the miles, but believe that if gm has identified a problem they should cover the repair especially when it is a safety concern. On top of that, i never received a letter informing of such special circumstance.
The speedometer will quit working correctly, after driving for a little bit the speedometer needle will get jerky and then start dropping down to zero while maintainthe same speed on the vehicle. This is a serious issue as you don't really know how fast you are going any more and all the other dash instruments seem to be working fine and the odometer seem to keep working correctly too. I was checking on line about this issue and found that many other are having this issue too and felt this should be a safety recall to fix their issue.
Speedometer cluster stopped working.speed shows 120 mph when stopped or driving.chevy dealership suggested i "follow someone", but refused to admit this is a safety issue.
My 2004 chevy avalanche z66's speedometer malfunctions constantly while i am driving by displaying that i am going over 120 miles per hour when its only just been backed up and out of a parking spot. Then when i drive, i have no idea how fast i am actually going due to this defective speedometer by chevy still displaying that i am going over 120mph. Even after it is parked and sits for awhile, and is turned off, it still reads over 120 miles per hour.
Speedometer didn't work at all thought it was just the cold, when it started working, the needle kept going until it was pinned well past 120. That is where it sits right now.
New battery new alternator however the vehicle is not communicating correctly to have the alternator charge the battery. Result is "battery not charging." this during any operation of the vehicle. Battery will die.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500. While driving at unknown speeds, the low coolant and check engine warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the cylinder head needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 116,000.
The exhaust manifolds bolts are snapping off which is causing leaking and noises (ticking sounds near drivers side) which can be smelled in the cabin and heard in the cabin of vehicle.i been told by other mechanics that this is a severe problem with 5.3 liter and 6.0 liter engines made by gm.. This repair will be in the thousands to fix.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500. While driving approximately 50 mph, the check engine warning indicator illuminated and the reduce engine speed message appeared on the instrument panel. The vehiclelost speed and the contact coasted the vehicle to the shoulder. The engine was idle and would not accelerate. The contact engaged in gear and started driving, but the failure recurred. The vehicle was towed to the house. The vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic. The throttle actuator control module failed and needed replacement. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 113,000.
The exhaust manifolds fastners are snapping off which is causing carbon monoxide to fill the cabin area of the vehicle. This hazard jepordizes the health of every person driving or riding as a passenger in the v8 powered vehicles. This is happening to newer models as well. Gm is wanting to charge the consumer $1,500-$3,000 to due repairs for defective parts.
Engine is using oil bad. It smokes when started.
Adding cooling and seeing blue smoke coming out when starting vehiclei find out that i have two cracked heads.
Onstar system does not have backup battery rendering stolen vehicle recovery inoperative if the vehicle battery is disconnected.accident assistance is also unavailable if the battery is destroyed/disconnected in a collision because there is no battery backup.this is made even more likely by the vehicle battery being situated at the front of the engine compartment.roadside assistance through onstar would also not be available in the case of a battery failure because there is no battery backup to power the onstar system.
Takata inflators airbags and gages on dash. In an accident airbags didn't released.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500. The contact stated that fuel fumes emitted into the interior of the vehicle. The contact stated that the abs warning lamp flashed randomly and the brake pedal became extremely difficult to depress to stop the vehicle. The seat belts failed to work properly to secure and retract. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop and the fuel lines were replaced; however, the failure recurred. The dealer replaced the cables associated with the tailgate. The vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 06e043000 (fuel system, gasoline), 05v163000 (seat belts), 05v043000 (service brakes, hydraulic) and 04v129000 (structure). The vehicle was not repaired. Themanufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 30,000.updated 8/17/15
Fuel tank vent valve has failed making it difficult to fill the tank with gasoline.when trying to fill the tank, the pump will continuously shut off.opening the gas tank cap also releases quite a bit of "air". Approximate cost to replace the vent valve/solenoid will be $210.00 which includes 2 hours of labor.repair facility stated they were currently experiencing many requests to repair this same issue on gm vehicles.
It takes half an hour to fill my tank it keeps kicking off like it's full when it's not
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500. The contact stated that the engine failed to start and the fuel gauge displayed that the fuel tank was empty. The contact also noticed a strong fuel odor inside the vehicle. The contact went to the fuel station and the fuel odor became stronger while adding fuel to the vehicle. The contact inspected the vehicle and found that fuel was leaking in the middle of the subframe under the front driver's side. The contact drove the vehicle home. The manufacturer and dealer were not contacted. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 170,000. The vin was unknown.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500. The contact stated that when the vehicle was turned off, fuel leaked from the fuel lines and a fuel odor emitted into the vehicle without warning. In addition, the contact stated that the brake pedal became extremely difficult to depress as the abs warning light illuminated. The contact also mentioned that the seat belts failed to secure and retract properly. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the fuel pump modular assembly, module kit and fuel tank needed to be replaced. Retaining hook attached to underside of hood is rusting apart from the hood panel.chunks of rusted metal are falling off of the area around the hood retaining hook.vehicle is still under rust warranty but general motors will not honor rust through warranty.severe rust began when vehicle was approx 2 years old.partial or complete separation of this retaining hook could cause hood to fly open at speed.many members of the chevy avalanche fan club have the same issue, but it is more noticeable on a vehicle with white paint.
While having all supplies for police firearms training lock in the back of my 2004 avalanche the tailgate would not unlock, dealer need to replace unit, same thing happened the very next day at the range. Returned to dealer and this time i was told they were using bad springs.

While driving on highway truck transmission started not shifting and at 55mph was running 4500 rpm, truck system then warned of a hot transmission. Brough to dealer told transmission is no good, under extended warranty can only get a rebuilt transmission if approved by gm.
When merging into traffic on the freeway, the truck went into 4 wheel drive low by itself, nearly causing me to have an accident. I was traveling at about 55 mph. I had to immediately pull off the side of the road because the truck would not shift out of 4wd. The vehicle manual states that the truck cannot be shifted into 4wd unless it is in neutral and rolling at less than 3 mph or major damage will occur. It also states that there are safety features that prevent the 4wd from engaging at any other time. Obviously there was a problem with the 4wd on my vehicle and the safety feature failed. The vehicle has been in the shop at the dealership 3 times for a total of ten days and all of the problems are still not repaired. I will be returning the truck there again tomorrow. They claim to have thoroughly gone over all of the problems and have repaired everything, but the 4wd system is still not functional. So far, i have been charged over $600. When i asked if this would ever happen again, the dealership assured me that it could not happen again because the part that failed had been upgraded. This tells me that gm knew there was a problem with this part and should have recalled it. A recall should be issued for these vehicles. All of the damaged parts on my truck should be replaced or repaired free of charge and my money should be refunded. After all repairs are completed, i should be given a warranty for the drive train of the vehicle. All of the parts repaired so far have not been completely rebuilt and i feel that the truck will give me nothing but problems with the drive train in the future. It's ridiculous that this could have happened; i could have lost control of my vehicle and had a serious accident.

Dt*: the contact stated anytime the rear seat was folded down, the buckles to the rear seat belts fell under the seat and were extremely difficult to retrieve, thus preventing passengers from buckling the safety belts.the vehicle was taken to a service dealer, who determined there was nothing that could be done.the manufacturer was contacted, who offered no advice.
I pulled into a gas station, driving a 2004 chevy avalanche.i had dropped something between the seat and the door.i turned off the truck as i was reaching down to find what i had dropped.when i pulled the key out of the ignition, the automatic seat went backwards (which is a personal setting option).my top 1/3 of my middle finger got caught in a hole where the undercarriage for the seat attaches to the floor.but when the seat went back, my finger was not only smashed, but also stuck.i tried to put the key back in the ignition to move the seat up, which didn't help.i was crying to my husband to help, but he didn't know what was wrong!i finally reached over with my right hand to the seat controls and was able to get the seat back enough to release my finger.i had four lacerations--two radiating from the corners of my nail bed.the other two were on the back side of my finger.this happened in the middle of west virginia (far from home or where we were going), so my husband went into the store at the gas station, bought first aid supplies, wrapped up my finger, and i put it in a cup of ice.the finger was pretty horrible and was incredibly painful.i kept thinking that a child would have lost a finger.it seems that there should be some mechanism to stop the seat if an obstruction is present.i did end up seeing a doctor.it is now 3 months later and my finger still looks pretty gnarly.i never thought to report this until a friend saw my finger yesterday (12/06/2009) and suggested that i do so.
I just picked up some mulch for around my house with my 8 year old sonand i got home and i was backing up to unload the mulch and when i went to hit the brakes the pedal went to the floor and the brakes light came on, luckily i wasn't driving down the road when it happened. The mechanic said the brakeline was rusted out, that shouldn't be happening on a 5 year old vehicle with only 39,000 miles on it..it also happened a second time not long after that, i cant remember the exact date on that one either. There has been lot of problems with this vehicle : heating ,brakes sensor, wheel bearings, e brake problems, fuel pump rot, water pump, rusted under carriage, o2 sensor, multiple brake and rotor replacements [4], noise in steering column and front end, gauge cluster replacement, windshield fluid reservoir leaks, power window motors, dome override light, dead battery problems, i went thru 4batteries in 5 years, it just kept going dead if i didn't use the vehicle for a couple days.i only have 72,000 miles on the vehicle now as of 12/19/2014.lots of problems for a $ 50,000 truck.ill never buy a chevy again.
Per chevy!
The vehicle's abs and brake lights are on.i took the vehicle in for repair and a state inspection.the part to repair the abs and brake light are on national back order with no definite availability date.the truck is not usable because of the failed state inspection.
Yesterday, july 4th 2015 my 2004 avalanche; with only 70k miles , the brakes failed. It was due to a rusted blown out brake line. I had no brakes driving on a mountainous road.i thought i was alone in this failure but after internet searching i find this is common problem with this vintage and model.i take very good care of my vehicles; underbody washing during inclement winter conditions , i was appalled at the underbody rust. Having other vehicles of similiar age and mileage with no rust, i felt gm has used inferior materials. Gm should stand up and admit their use of substandard materials and offer remedy. They should know that as a consumer if they don't i'll never buy another gm product.
Abs brake went out about 8 years ago being told by some mechanics no point in repairing it same thing will happen againseems that is a problem with this vechile when it went out i had 50 000 miles and the 36000 mile and 3 year warranityhas already passedi heard a few weeks ago that you all had a recall but i was never notified the vechile had been parked at a mall when i started to leave their the light and warning alarm came on
Was hooking up my trailer to tow. Had my daughter step on the brakes to check the lights. The pedal went to the floor and alarm went off. Found brake fluid squirting onto the ground. Had to have all the brake lines replaced due to rust behind the drivers front wheel. Found out this is a common problem with this type and all the chevy trucks. All in the same area.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500. While driving approximately 45 mph and making a left turn, the steering wheel became difficult to turn. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the hydraulic brake pump failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was not taken to a dealer. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign number: 05v043000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 250,000.
Brake line ruptured from rust. Chev dealer wanted $2600 to replace/fix 2004 chev avalanche brake lines.
Traveling appx 35mph applied brakes to make left turn, peddle went to the floor. No traffic in front of me or we would have hit them. Brake fluid pouring from under truck, under driver side door area. Brake line ruptured due to rust. Local mechanic replaced ruptured line. I inspected all line few months later and found they were also in bad shape due to rust. Took to local gm dealer $550 to replace all brake line. Gm should have picked up cost for not using non-corrosive brake line. Very luck me and my kid didn't get hurt.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500. While driving at 8 mph, the brake pedal was depressed and failed to respond and the brake warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the brake line needed to be replaced due to corrosion. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 64,000.
Leaving the yankee stadiumparking lot in the bronx . Traffic was heavy! the traffic was stop and go . Upon stopping i felt the pedal go to the floor and smelled brake fluid . I pulled over and notice the split in the brake line near the chassie . I then had the vehicle towed home. The truck is a 2004 chevy avalanche with 60,213 miles on it.the brake line was split on the driver side chassie. It was not the rubber line going to the caliper but the stainless line feed the system.
My wife was driving our 2004 chevrolet avalanche with our 3-year-old son in the back seat. When she tried to stop the vehicle, the brake pedal went to the floor, and it took a great distance to stop the vehicle. She was close to home, so she returned and parked in our driveway. When i got home from work, i filled the reservoir with brake fluid, which was instantly drained. I looked under the door on the driver's side to find the brake fluid pouring out on to my driveway. I had the vehicle towed to a local repair shop. Estimated cost is $1600 to replace the brake lines and the cylinders that have become fused to the lines by the massive amount of rust. I do not live in an area of the country where roads treated for snow is a concern.
Going downmy driveway pushed on my brakes an it went to the floor, underneaththe truck by the drivers door the frame was very wet with brake fluid, the brake line had blown.
My family and i was traveling on a busy road at 45 mph, when we had to come to a stop and our brakes did not work.we almost slammed in the back of the car that was infront of us.my husband had to push the brake pedal all the way down to the floor and turn toward the grass shoulder.thank god no one was hurt.my husband checked under the vehicle and saw that there was break fluid running out of the brake line.there were no warning lights or warning sounds that our vehicle made until after he started the vehicle again and then the vehicle gave a warning sound and a warning light.we are contacting our mechanic tomorrow because this happened after 6pm.i have been reading the other complaints on the avalanche's break lines and my husband said that i should also file one.
Third brake line failure due to corrosion. Areas of failure are hidden from view above other components. Upon brake line failure, backup braking was inoperative in all cases. Vehicle was on a city street in motion attempting to stop. Brakes failed suddenly in all cases. Brakes were very noticibly inoperative before any indication on dash board. Pumping the pedal did nothing- the pedal went to the floor. Was told manufacturer no longer supplies brake lines for this vehicle.
The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the vehicle was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 06e043000 (fuel system, gasoline), 05v163000 (seat belts), 05v043000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The approximate failure mileage was 144,000.
I was approaching a stop sign on a residential street, pushed the brake pedal and lost braking ability.the pedal traveled to the floor, when that happened the service light came on with an audible alarm.i was able to get the truck stopped on the side of the road.a large amount of smoke was coming out underneath the hood from the spraying brake fluid.upon inspection it was determined that there was a hole in the right front brake line.further inspection revealed all brake lines to be in similar condition with a potential failure imminent.all brake lines need to be replaced and will cost over $1,000.the truck is not used excessively and has low mileage.
Both brake lines from master cylinder to abs module failed resulting in no brakes due to excess rust on lines.car failed inspection 1 and second year due to rotted rotors. Also recently fuel leaking from top of fuel tank and fuel lines from fuel pump module badly rusted. Worse yet frame is disintegrating. Due cheap steel.my 1998 chevy astro is driven and stored in like conditions and yet doesn't show the rust like the avalanche. Thankfully i was not on the highway when lines blew. Avalanche is the first vehicle to have so many safety related problems due to defective materials. Didn't report earlier thinking it was an isolated case.
Applied brakes and brake peddle went to the floor. I swerved to the right to avoid an accident .got out of vehicle and saw the brake lines were rusted and had ruptured.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500. The contact stated thatwhile attempting to brake from 5 mph, the brake pedal abnormally traveled to the floorboard. The contact inspected the vehicle and discovered that the brake line was rusted, causing all of the brake fluid to leak out from the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a mechanic for further inspection and repairs. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 80,200.
All the frame is rusted and all brake lines and fuel lines, and front end parts rusted
On the above listed date at approximately 0730 hours, i was running errands after getting off work and before returning home. I started to drive down a sloped road approaching a traffic light at a four way intersection. The traffic light turned red as i was approaching it and i applied the brakes while traveling at 30 mph. Upon application of the brakes, the pedal went straight to the floor with zero functioning of the brake system.the brake light then illuminated and a notification came across to "service brake system". I down shifted down from "d" to "3-2-1", all the while pumping the brakes. It wasn't until i reached around 5 mph that it seemed that the brakes had any affect, and i came to a stop in the middle of the intersection. Since i was roughly a mile from my house at this point i limped my truck home, mostly using gearing "2" and "1". I parked the truck, entered my house and informed my wife as to what happened. Then i returned to the truck to find a puddle of fluid under and around the drivers door. I checked the master cylinder reservoir and it was completely drained at this point. There is no doubt if someone would have been in front of me or coming through the intersection at the time this incident occurred i would have been involved in an accident. At no time prior to this have i had any indication of the brakes going bad, ie: brake warning light or abs, soft brake pedal or fluid loss. It seems as if this happened all at once. The vehicle was then towed to a mechanics garage later on that day to be repaired.
I was approaching an intersection where the light was changing and when i applied the brakes, the pedal went to the floor and i couldn't slow down.i ended up going through the red light with my son in the car; luckily we didn't get struck.i had to utilize the emergency brake to stop on the shoulder of the road.i looked under the truck and saw brake fluid pouring out of a rusted brake line under the driver's side.i had to have the truck towed to a dealership.i had a full inspection on 12/23/13 at hudson buick pontiac gmc in poughkeepsie, ny and asked them to specifically check the brakes, which they said were fine; i guess they don't check the lines during an inspection.i have read that this has occurred on several gm vehicles.does someone have to die before there is some sort of action taken to correct this problem?
I came around a curve and there was road work going on and had to stop real quick. The brake pedal went to the floor. All the brakelines were rotted.i had to change every brake line on my truck.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500. While driving approximately 30 mph, the brakes failed and the contact rear ended the preceding vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. There were no warning indicators illuminated. A police report was not filed and there were no injuries. The dealer was later contacted (gordon chevrolet in philadelphia, pa) and the contact was informed that there was no recall. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was damaged and towed to an auto body shop. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.
I was getting in my truck to go shopping and after driving for a short distance i notice my brake pedal went to the floor causing me to head into traffic almost causing a accident.when i got the truck home i notice dripping of brake fluid on driver side door.further checking i discover my brake lines is rusting and cause a major leaks underneath my truck.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500. While attempting to stop at a traffic light, the brake pedal was depressed and failed to immediately stop the vehicle. The contact was able to stop the vehicle. The contact noticed that a brake line was severely corroded, which caused a fracture in the brake line. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but was not repaired. The contact stated that several brake lines were previously repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 141,000.
The abs system engages at low speeds when stopping on dry pavement. Generally the condition is limited to speeds under 10 mph when parking or stopping at stop signs. This condition disengaged the breaks and caused the vehicle to move beyond the traffic control signal at a four way intersection, nearly resulting in a serious side impact collision.
After applying pressure to brake pedal, the vehicle failed to stop and the brake pedal was to the floor. Once the truck coasted to a stop, we pulled to the side of the road and found brake fluid leaking underneath the truck. We had the truck towed to our local dealership. The dealership replaced all metal brake lines that left us with a bill of over $2,000 for parts and labor. The entire truck is in beautiful condition and rust free except for the faulty brake lines! gm should recall this issue.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500. While driving approximately 45 mph, the vehicle failed to stop when the brake pedal was depressed to the floor. The contact pumped the brake pedal and the vehicle came to a stop. The contact exited the vehicle and discovered brake fluid leaking from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the brake lines were rusted and fractured. As a result, the brake lines needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 84,000.
Unwanted abs activation on my 2004 avalanche which started at 40,000 miles. The problem is constant and could be dangerous. There is currently a recall on the 1998- 2002 for the same problem but not on 03-04 etc.. I know of an 03 with the same problems and he hita pole.i contacted gm and a pat o'brien dealership in medina ohio andthey will not repair this problem unless i pay for. It effects trucks onlyin the snow belt areas, i live in ohio.i hope you can help me with this.
Brake line failure due to rusty lines along frame on drivers side of my 2004 chevy avalanche.line broke and brake pedal went to the floor.there was a slight amount of rear braking power left but the truck would not stop in normal driving conditions. The lines were repaired at the dealer.luckily this happened in my driveway when i went to put the truck in gear.
2004 chevrolet avalanche 2wd had not been driven in 10 days, no prior problems noted. Drove vehicle, noticed abs light was on, parked vehicle, turned ignition off, heard loud humming noise coming from under vehicle. Traced noise to abs unit mounted under drivers side floor board, had to disconnect battery to stop noise, when battery is connected noise immediately starts.
Sudden and unexpected brake failure coming to a stop.brake pedal went to the floor, brake fluid was gushing out from under driver's door.later examination revealed brake lines severely rusted and one failed due to extensive rusting.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500.the contact stated that the tailgate straps were rusty and beginning to fail.in addition, the abs speed sensor was slow at stopping the vehicle.the abs would pulse and the vehicle would take longer to stop.the steering wheel was loose and vibrated when driving over a bump.the shaft bushing is also failing in the steering wheel column.the manufacturer stated that there were no recalls for the failures; therefore, the contact would be responsible for the repairs.the failure mileage was 86,000.updated 3/5/09 updated 03/10/09.
Steering some times making a knocking type noise, brought to dealer steering shaft needed to be replaced was told chevy knows about the problem.
The steering gear boxes on most gm trucks. They have to be taken to dealer for service every 30,000 mi150 dollar charge. It makes you think there is something loose in the front end. Had mine replaces but after 30,000 mi. It's back.

Loud popping sound from crossmember and, defective intermediate shaft on steering. 2004 chevy avalanche.
At idol or low speeds like pulling into a parking space, it was as if my 2004 avalanche had no power steering to the rightand only the right. Upon taking it to a mechanic, they pulled up a service bulletin stating there is a problem with the steering box and there is a redisigned steering box and should be replaced , i done that and $732.96 later the problem is fixed at my expence when it is their poor disign. Side knote: my wifes a cancer patient, i should be paying dr. Bills with that money!!!!!
Vehicle developed a clunking , while driving, that can be felt in the steering wheel. It does not matter the type of road. Mechanic advised that it was the steering shaft.
There is popping and twisting motions in the steering column of my 04 avalanche, it came from the factory like that as i was told. My steering wheel eventually twisted all the way around without turning the tires one day... Thank god no accident. Very serious issue was told all avalanches in this year pop and twist like that. Had to replace steering column. Old part is at landfill.
In the morning - below say about 55 degrees when i first get in and drive, i have to turn the wheels to the left to exit my driveway. For the first minute or two, the steering is very stiff, almost like manual - then it goes normal for the remainder of the day.

I have a 2004 chevrolet avalanche and have had several flat tires, was never stuck on the highway so never removed the spare tire.today and yesterday 02-13-10 / 02-14-10 have been trying to remove the spare tire and feel grateful the failure occurred in my driveway. If not i would be stuck, as it is impossible to remove the tire from under the truck. I did review the instructions, soak the tire release in penetrating oil and made a dozen attempts to remove the tire. The result was a sore back, the first part of the jack handle extension stuck in the back of the truck. The section that is stuck will not allow for proper use of the jack. I have to crawl under the truck and turn it slowly, just gave up and will call the dealer on monday morning. My complaint is the spare tire release is stuck and the tire cannot be removed. Also when searching for information on the internet on how to remove the tire was shocked to learn my experience is not rare but average. The comments report mine and other chevrolet models with this type of tire storage do not work. Also they are unsafe and can drop the tire from under the truck on the road, resulting in damage and endangering the public. Also my other complaint is the rear door will not shut on the rear tailgate door of the truck, another common problem.i think both are dangerous and should be fixed by chevrolet at no cost.they pose a danger to the public and could cause injury or death. I did read one report online of a driver of an s-10 truck where the tire fell and caused an accident. That he received a citation from the police and his insurance rates were increased based on the accident.

Driver and passenger exterior door latch did not latch when door was closed. While the driver was turning right on a village street, both the driver and passenger doors opened unexpectedly. While in motion around the turn the driver attempted to close the door to avoid oncoming traffic. During the attempt to close the door, the car hit a tree on the right side of the road. A police report was filed.i suspect the stuck latch was due to water and/or dirt getting in the latch hinge.
Clear coat peeling on all horizontal surfaces, upper dash panel developed multiple cracks creating a safety hazard if airbag deploys.

The spare tire secondary latch was stuck in the hoist body not allowing the spare tire to be released. The dealer, sierra chevrolet, monrovia, ca stated that the hoist mechanism was stripped, not allowing the tire to be lowered. I had seen the cable let down but the tire not come down at costco, azusa, ca where they were replacing my tires, so i know the mechanism was not stripped. My complain is both against the dealer for falsely representing a problem and causing me a cost of over $250 and for the design of the hoist which was flawed.
Dt*: the contact stated the spare tire release system was dangerous to operate, as the users body was placed into a position that may cause injury.the manufacturer was notified.updated 12/5/2006 -
Onstar system does not have backup battery rendering stolen vehicle recovery inoperative if the vehicle battery is disconnected.accident assistance is also unavailable if the battery is destroyed/disconnected in a collision because there is no battery backup.this is made even more likely by the vehicle battery being situated at the front of the engine compartment.roadside assistance through onstar would also not be available in the case of a battery failure because there is no battery backup to power the onstar system.
All the frame is rusted and all brake lines and fuel lines, and front end parts rusted
I was driving home after picking my grandaughter up from school i was doing approxomitally 55 mph and my truck came to almost a complete stop my engine light came on and panel stated throttle reduction or something to that affect i checked fluids and belts and restarted truck because i was halfway in road at busy time of day i then attempted to drive to safe spot and called for help the truck then ran great that eve truck did same thing went to shop and and had checked out it was the fuel actuater control motor circuit at this time i have not had it repaired this is a dagerous malfunction im am very lucky that i was not hit by other traffic due to no warning of almost coming to a complete stop in busy traffic i received a few fingers waved at me and i dont think it meant was num 1 lol
This is to complain about the failing speedometers in gm trucks and suvs. Mine is a 2004 chevrolet avalanche and the speedometer failedto show the accurate speed of the vehicle.this leads to dangerous speeds without the driver'sknowledge.
I was driving on the interstate when i noticed that my speed would not go over 35mph.i did not notice this beforehand because the speed limit was 35mph up until i needed to accelerate to highway speeds.i noticed that no matter what i did, or how fast i was going, the speedometer would not read above 35mph.needless to say that this made my trip to the airport rather stressful as i had no idea how fast i was going.i could only pace with other cars and hoped they weren't going too fast.i have read that this has been an ongoing problem with the avalanche with not just the speedometer but also the rest of the gauges on the cluster.it would be really nice if gm/chevrolet would address this issue and make a recall for it.ever since this incident, it's been randomly breaking.if i stop and restart the vehicle, sometimes it works as normal.however sometimes i'm just not sure and this lack of trust with the gauges could end up being a serious problem.
2004 avalanche speedometer malfunctioning with 36000 miles. I have done a search on line and have found numerous complaints with the same problem.
The cluster on a 2004 avalanche chev is broken.the speedometer is malfunctioning on a daily basis.i'm doing 30mph in the city, the speedometer reads 65mph;i'm doing 65mph on i-75, the speedometer reads over 100mph.
The contact owns a 2004 chevrolet avalanche 1500. The contact stated that the speedometer failed without warning and would not read any speeds over 20 mph. The failure was intermittent. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop where it was diagnosed that the speedometer motor needed to be replaced. The vehicle was to be inspected and repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 55,000.
Windshield wiper will not cut off.left side of dash blows hot air while the right side blows cold air when air conditioner is on.
Windshield wiper systems that will not turn off/ (moisture sensitive wiper system), because the presence of water within the wiper modules can either cause a short circuit or can lead to the corrosion of components within the module. Defect consequence:depending on the occurrence and weather situation, driver visibility could be reduced, which could result in a crash. Same condition as recall id from nhtsa: 04v046000.
Power passenger window failed.cable frays and jams in mechanism, window will not go up or down requiring costly replacement of the mechanism.this same failure occurred on my previous 2002 avalanche and my sons 2000 silverado pickup.the window was used very infrequently on all three vehicles.

Windshield wipers fail in the on position and will run constantly regardless of the switch position and will not shut off until the vehicle is shut off.the vehicle must be off for a while before the wipers will stay off.
