2002 chevrolet astro van.amongst many other problems with this brand-new vehicle, we experienced the following twice:when travelling or shifting from neutral, the transmission makes a loud grinding noise, and the engine revs, but there is not power.in other words, the transmission acts as though it shifted itself into neutral.have complained since the first week of ownership about noisy transmission (sounds like pump); however, dealer can never find anything wrong.latest incident occurred yesterday, while 1200 miles from home, took it to dealer in wa, who claim to have found nothing wrong.am now afraid to drive vehicle.
While driving 40 mph vehicle was involved in a frontal collision. Upon impact, dual airbags did not deploy. No injureswere reported.
High speed car accident on 1/3/07 driver seat belt did not work correctly, belt did not lock upon hard braking or upon car crash i hit my chest on steering wheel and my knees on dashboard, my airbag did not deploy either.
While vehicle was being driven.the alert warning light for the air bags illuminated. I was afraid to drive the vehicle due too the air bag inflator might rupture or underinflate. In the event of a crash. An underinflated air bag may not properly protect the occupant. This scenario increases the risk of serious injury or death.
The brakes made a squealing noise, and was replaced.after they were replaced, the brakes locked up which resulted in an accident. When the brakes locked, the vehicle ran into a snowbank.on the second occasion, the brakes locked and slid into the person in front.the vehicle was rear endedand the air bags did not deploy and the seat belts were inoperative.the consumer requested money back. *scc
I was driving and all of a sudden, the dash lights went out and the car died. I lost power steering, and i coasted to the side of the road. Come to find out the fuse box was hot and there was a few fuses that were blown. I replace the blown fuses and drove home. When i got home and turned off the van, i couldn't get it start i looked at the same fuse and they were blown again. The van now sits in the driveway till i figure this out. Because it is too dangerous to drive.
Recently i took my van to a dealer because the knob on the a/c fan melted off it cost 600 dlrs in repairs the hvac knob had melted off also the connector and resistor had burned out . The entire wiring harness was melted together. No fuse blew to prevent his form happening we are not sure what caused this to occur. My concern is that this could have caused a fire in the dash while i was driving resulting in severe injury accident or even death. Please contact me if there was a recall i missed or if there is any information as to why this happened. Thank you for your time concern chevy owner.
Vehicle lost all electrical power to every system that is controlled by the ignition being turned on. Driver was in the process of making a u-turn around a curbing island in the divided traffic road when all electrical was interrupted while the steering wheel was turned all the way to the left. Condition caused steering to become difficult, brake pedal went clear to the floor, air conditioning and radio and headlights all went off. Condition was repeatable with exception of brake pedal, each time steering was turned to the left. Inspection under vehicle found that main power cable is routed across front side of main frame motor mount member. There was a slight curve in the way the wire was routed and each time the steering was turned to the left, the inner tie rod end for the right wheel came in contact with the wire harness. After many miles, the protective cover and then the actual wire insulation was rubbed through. This caused a direct short to ground through the steering parts of all (switched while running) electrical components of the vehicle. Problem was corrected by taping the wire insulation, then taping the protective covering. I then had to fabricate a bracket to screw to the steel crumple member to hold the harness back from the steering linkage.
Abs coming on at very low speeds on dry pavement (under 5mph/8kmh).it doesn't do it every time, but quite often at low speeds, like coming to a red light, stop sign or parking. Of course, there is no need for the abs come on at such low speeds and especially not on dry pavement.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet astro van. The contact stated when the vehicle was shifted into park she noticed there wassmoke and fire behind the steering wheel.there was also a minor explosion. The fire department was notifiedand stated that an electrical wire started the fire. A report was filed and the failure was not diagnosed nor towed from the contacts residence. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure and the current mileage was 170,000.updated 8/23/12
I have owned 3 astro vans, ?89 and 92 (made in usa) previously and liked them so well i bout another one 2002 (made in mexico). Within 60,000 miles rear seat fabric started to come apart, driver door power windows and locks stopped working, windshield washer hoses rotted, interior fan blower switch failed (twice), driver arm rest vinyl splitting in many areas, steering wheel mounted hazard light switch caused break and signal lights to blow fuses (this was fixed as recall), rear cargo door handle broke off, fuel tank gas level indicator fluctuates regardless of fuel level, antilock breaks engage unnecessarily at low speed soft braking, windshield leakage, side door difficult to close and sometimes can not be closed. Almost all item appeared after warranty was up. I will never buy another gm product again.
My 2002 astro van has been in the service dept. At ron carter in alvin texas 11 times, 7 times for the same problem, the steering.electrical problems 5 times, the light flashing and the locks clicking constantly.the back door broke twice for no apparent reason, the fuel pump failing and numerous other problems, well the electrical problem was supposedly fixed, but now is acting up again, i have 4 children and need a safe vehicle to drive in with my kids.
When raining widshield wipers dont work as directed, they do what they want. They stay on after shutting them off. And door locks lock and unlock repeatedly. Wipers also shut off in the middle of line of sifht intermittently.never works correctly
I only drive this 2002 chevrolet astro van in our small town because i am terrified to drive it on expressways or in heavy traffic because the distributor cap collected moisture and the engine stopped in heavy traffic almost causing terrible accidents three times in the past 8 months.last week i drove the van into town.i keep a close watch on all the gauges because of the previous problems.when i left the house all the gauges on the dash were working and the battery was between 12-14 volts.i noticed within 5 miles the battery volts were decreasing so i headed for home.by the time i reached home (10 miles all total), the volt meter was in the red zone, all the gauges (except for oil pressure) and speedometer were not working and, i believe, the headlights were out.i pulled the van into the drive and shut it off.i had difficulty opening the door (power locks) to get out.the van would not start again.the van is under warranty so i called courtesy chevrolet who had the van towed in for service.they called me the following monday to tell me they replaced the alternator, computer and battery and the van was ready but they had broken the radio and would replace it on tuesday.i said fine and i would pick it up on wednesday (february 9, 2005).courtesy chevrolet called me on tuesday and told me not to come on wednesday because the voltage problem was not corrected and they would call me when the van was ready.they called on february 10, 2005 to say the alternator was bad and had been replaced a second time.
The alternator was replaced several times.
Van willnot start at times. Moisture is getting into distributor and shorting out the ignition. In the 63000 miles i have driven this van the distributor and rotor has been replaced 2 times due to failure. Rotor has big black burn on plastic near electrode.
Vehicle has repeatedly starting running poorly and has a lack of power along with a misfire. Vehicle is then hard to accelerate and slows down flow of traffic. Each time the distributor cap and rotor have been found with excessive amount of corrosion on them and when the cap & rotor are replaced the problem goes away for a while. The cap & rotor were changed 3 times each before 50,000 miles.
I attempted to make a left hand turn across two lanes of on coming traffic (speed limit 55 mph).i push down on the accelerator, the van moved into the on coming traffic lanes and the engine died.cars had to quickly apply breaks to avoid hitting my van.it took about 20 seconds to get the van started and out of the intersection.the van was towed into courtesy chevrolet and the distributor cap and rotator were replace.i was told everything was corrected.this was not the case as the same problem happened two additional times (october 24, 2004 and december 16, 2004) with the same terrifying consequences with on coming traffic.i was fortunate not to be killed or kill someone else with this vehicle stalling in on coming traffic.

When the vehicle was parked on an incline with the engine running, the shift lever did not go into any other gear unless excessive force was applied.
Driving on 3 lane interstate at 70 mph when transmission failed(sun gear shell in 4l60e transmission). Early am with little traffic so was able to coast to shoulder safely. Towed to exit. Had to replace transmission very lucky that traffic was light as all drive power was lost.

Consumer states that the back bench seat belts are too long, when the seat belts are put on, they lay off of the childrens rib cages near their sides, the seat belts do not fit children or adults correctly, they were replaced with shorter belts, but they are still too long, dealer stated that they would move the bolts back to make them shorter, however later stated they could not due to liability reasons.
I have recently purchased anew custom van from this dealership. My rear seatbelts are not installed properly, therefore, i can not provide safe transportation for my grandchildren. The dealer and the gm representative have been extremely non-cooperative as well as gm contractor who customized the van. I am turning to you for any assistance. I pray that you can help my wife and i with a resolution to this problem. I feel we are being taken advantage of because of our age and we can not fight back (attorney) because of our limited income. Thank you.dt
Buckles of rear seats on the vehicle are about 6-7 inches from the seat, whenchild is seating, buckle is up to chest or around stomach area. Contacted dealer, and the dealer is not willing to do anything with the vehicle.
The consumer states that when the seat belts are pulled all the way out, they will not lock.the seat belts will not restraint child car seats.*scc
Abs was activated at slow speeds causing a substantial drop in braking power.
I got in my van to drive to a store and the brake pedal went right to the floor. There was brake fluid leaking from near the rear tire. The steel hard brake line running from the abs unit to the rear axle is rusted through and is leaking. This was a sudden event.also the fuel lines look to be just as bad. I'm sure stainless steel lines would not have added much to the vehicles cost and would have prevented this hazard and expense.

On march 26, 2008, i took my 2002 chevy astro van to be serviced. Mileage 93,829,i had no brakes. The master cylinder was determined to be the cause of the failure and was replaced. On april 12, 2008, once again i had no brakes, this time it resulted in me getting into and accident. I took the van back to the same repair shop. When they put it on the lift they said the whole braking system was melted until the point of the hose bursting. He said he never saw anything like this in his 20 years of service. They did not want to touch it stating it was now a liability to themand directed me to chevy. Chevy concurred, four different people said they have never seen or have a clue at what caused this. They called in gm, who also never had seen this, but bounced the blame on a questionably installed master cylinder. Chevy said they can replace the whole braking system because they do not know what is wrong, but since they do not know what caused this or why fuses didn't blow to prevent it, it could happen again. We hired our own car consultant to look at the van, he too has never seen or heard of anything like this. The heat and melted brake lines ran closer than 1/4 inch away from the gas tank. I do not want to take the risk of driving again with my children and loosing brakes or possibly igniting the gas tank.
Van experienced multiple brake failures back to back. On three separate occasions front brakes would smoke due to brake pads melting. The next brake failure occurred when the brakes failed to stop the van immediately when pedal was depressed while going down a hill. This resulted in extended stopping distance. Dealership serviced the van, but found no problem with the braking system. However, brakeproblem recurred five months afterwards, and almost rear ended another vehicle.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet astro. The contact stated that the front brake lines were rusted. The abs unit was not working properly and the rear brakes had already failed. The vehicle was not inspected by the dealer but was repaired by the contact. The current mileage was 79,000 and the failure mileage was unknown.
Dt:shift indicator was indicating the wrong gear.while driving the road the indicator was moving, but theshifter itself. Every time i drove the vehicle this happened.it was taken to dealer to fix and stated there were a lot of complaint.this occurred about a month agoantilock brakes are applying when dry.whengoing about 3-4 mph the antilock brakes will engaged.this problem was random. Have not taken for repairs.
While driving at 5 mph consumer attempted to park in the driveway andwithout warning loststeering ability.also, brakes were inoperable, and would not stop the vehicle.the vehicle collided with the outside wall of the garage.there was considerable damage to the garage and the vehicle. Consumer sustained no bodily injuries. Sliding door doesn't unlock to open.dealer replaced ps pump because pump drive shaft was broken, and reinstalled side door.*la
Dt*: the contact stated while applying brake pressure at various low speeds, there was an increased stopping distance, and the antilock brakes activated without warning.there was a nhtsa recall, # 05v379000, regarding the antilock brakes.the vehicle was not included in the recall due to the vin.the dealer and manufacturer were alerted.updated 12/15/2006 - the dealer told the consumer that the astro was build on the same frame as the silverado which was being recalled.
The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet astro van. When driving at low speeds the anti-lock braking system would activate without warning, increasing the vehicle's stopping distance. The consumer's anti-lock brakes don't work properly when pulling into a parking space or under 10 mph.the consumer had to pump the brakes in order to get vehicle to stop or for warning before slowing down.the vehicle has all wheel drive.the consumer pulled fuse for anti-lock brakemany times, and it worked fine without the fuse. *sbpulling the anti-lock brake fuse deactivated the anti-lock brakes capability. With the anti-lock brake fuse in, the consumer nearly runs into the back of vehicles when stopping. The consumer stated that the incidents happens only when the fuse is in and occured three times at low speed for no reason.*sb

The abs system failed and caused the brake pedal to go to the floor.*nlm
I began having a situation where my anti-lock brake system would activate at slow speeds <10 mph such as when pulling into a parking space - this results in the vehicle going forward farther than it normally would - please note that i did not have any accidents.i took it to the dealer which indicated that it was a common problem and they may be able to clean the sensors of corrosion (they did note that the sensors are lightly built and could break requiring replacement during the cleaning process - which they did).i voiced my concern to gm via there customer service system that this failure occurred at 42000 miles on a safety related system (3 years from in service date - 6000 miles out of warrant).i clearly indicated that i felt this was a flaw on what i consider to be a critical component.as of this point - 1 week later - gm's only response was that my concern would be made known to the management of the company.no action to inform me of the recall that i have recently read about was made, nor was any action to cover the approximately $500 bill.note that the recall that has been in the news did not mention chevy astros which my vehicle is - however the problem sounds identical and my vehicle is a truck based gm vehicle with all wheel drive and antilock brakes - similiar to all the models mentioned in the recall.
Consumer stated when he attempted to apply the brakes, the pedal went half way down, it was discovered that there was a faulty main module which controlled the brake system.dealer has been notified.the vehicle lost it's braking power on a steep icy hill and slid with the pedal fully depressed.immediately after the vehicle was repaired, the brake modular had failed during a test drive.*scc

Operated the van for 30 minutes. Parked it in a garage and shutoff engine. Ten minutes later the garage smoke alarm sounded. The van had filled the garage full of smoke. Opened the door and attempted to restart the engine to remove from garage. Display reported an assortment of warnings and engine starter failed to activate.opened hood to discover flames coming from the underside on the engine. Called for fire department and made first attempt to use a fire extinguisher to stop flames from the engine compartment, was unsuccessful.went under the van's driver-side and could now see the source of fire. Extinguished the fire, then it shortly erupted again. Extinguished again.placed the key into the steering column to move transmission to neutral, so that i could push the vehicle out of the garage. Sparks immediately flew from the driver-side underside and re-ignited the fire.the transmission lever was no longer engaged to the transmission (control was limp) and the key seized in the column.went underneath the vehicle to extinguish the fire a third time.after this i removed the positive power lead from the battery to stop any further electrical shorts.fire subsided.fire department arrived and ordered a wrecker to drag the vehicle from the garage for safety of the house.at this time it was discovered that the fire had also destroyed the emergency brake system. The parking brake was seized in the off position.chevrolet dealership repair order states as follows: "appears ebcm shorted and caught fire burning a hole through the brake line. Parking brake cable. Shifter cable and wiring harness."the ebcm fire not only caused the loss of normal braking operation, the poor location of unit and subsequent fire it started destroyed the emergency braking system and severed the controls to the transmission. This leaves a driver with a complete loss of braking functions and no means to slow the vehicle through down shifting the transmission.$6000 of damage.
The brake pedal was to small. When the consumer applied the brake, her foot slipped off the brake pedal. *nlm
2002 chevy astro van idler arm pulled through the frame of the front right portion resulting in partial steering failure on february 1, 2009. Upon inspection by halleen chevrolet service department it was determined that not only had the front right idler arm broken through the frame but the front left idler arm was also in danger of breaking through. This would result in complete steering failure. The service department at the dealership determined that the vehicle needed a complete frame replacement.

The contact owns a 2002 chevrolet astro van. While driving 30 to 35 mph, the vehicle began accelerating on its own. The vehicle would not slow down by applying the brakes which forced the contact to shift gears into neutral and then into third gear.within a few minutes, the contact was able to slow down the vehicle engaging the brake pedal and shut the engine off.the contact was informed to engage the accelerator pedal to loosen the throttle; however, when he restarted the vehicle the rpm's increased rapidly.the police helped the contact push the vehicle onto the emergency lane. The vehicle was towed to the dealer.the dealer stated that the rapid acceleration was due to a frayed accelerator cable.the dealer replaced the accelerator cable and adjusted the idle and throttle plate.the vehicle is driving normally. The contact requested the parts from the dealer who stated that they were not longer available.the contact is concerned about the safety risk since a crash could have occurred. The failure mileage was 172,777.
