Van shut down while driving and we loss brakes.
I recently heard of a recall on the tahoes and gm trucks regarding the gauge panel or cluster panel.i drive a 1990 chevy astro van which is on a tahoe frame.i am having the same types of problems with my gauge panel as described in the recall.my abs/brake light comes on at various times for no reason.my temp and oil gauges change from hot to cold and back again for no reason and the check gauge light will light up.now the gas had will change even when the car is not on.as a woman i need to be able to depend on my cars gauges to let me know if there is a problem.i took the car to the shop yesterday and they could not find a reason for my car to be doing these things.i called our chevy dealer here in griffin where the car was purchased and they did not want to help me.i am now asking you for help.sincerely, dana d. Hortman
This is the second time the battery has failed without warning. The first time (4/2/01) the battery was replaced and we were told that was the problem. The new batteryfailed approx. Six weeks later (5/27/01) again without warning. I am filing this report for the following reasons. 1) this is a safety issue, this is the car my wife uses to transport my children, with the battery failure with no warning this could leave my wife and children stranded anywhere. 2) when my car was being towed to the dealer for repairs the tow driver stated that this car is notorious for this type of problem - i want to make sure it is reported for all the other people having this same problem.
When pulling into a parking spot the van stalled and wouldnt restart. It seemed the battery was totally drained so i went to replace it and found that the battery cables were scorching hot. When i installed the replacement battery it was at nightr so i saw sparks down on the lower portion to the battery harness. I then had the van towed into the dealership and they intially found no defects, told me the battery wasnt installed properly. I explained again the issue and they rechecked the electrical system and found no defects. I had repeated issues of the same type over the next two days so i took it back and they found shorted battery cables htis time. I wanted other astro owners to know of the issue to see if they had run into the same type of problem. I am currently working to get my towing fee reimbursed by gm but they are being a little difficult at this point.

Chevy 2000 astro, cuts out while driving. We even pushed the van into a chevy dealer and they could not tell us what it was after hooking it up to diagnostics. We figured it was the coil wire. Recently the van has been bogging down when it is under load. Also, when it rains it runs rough. We took it to a shop and they replaced our fuel filter. It ran fine but still cuts out sometimes running up hill. So we changed the spark plugs. If you let the van sit over the weekend with out driving it, the van was really hard to start. Until finally it just wouldn't start at all. In addition the door locks sometimes work and sometimes don't . The driver side window is very sluggish going up you actually have to help it by pulling up on it. We keep blowing fuses when we use our cigarette lighter to charge our cell phone. It really needs help.

Vehicle stalls when traveling! almost crashed with children in vehicle because of complete operational failure! vehicle restarts, however may stall at any time! i took vehicle to attendant shop as well as a chevy shop and they both failed to find the cause. This is extremely dangerous and the problem must be dealt with accordingly.

The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet astro van. The contact stated that fuel fumes were emitted into the vehicle. After inspecting the vehicle he noticed that there was a fuel leak. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the fuel lines were severely corroded and needed to be replaced. In addition, the contact stated that while driving 25 mph, he attempted to engage the brakes but the brake pedal sunk into the floor board. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed that the brakes lines were also corroded and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was82,257 and the current mileage was 88,000. Updated 12/30/13the consumer also stated rust caused the abs to engage at low speeds on dry pavement, causing the vehicle to continue to move, even though the brake pedal was depressed.
My 2000 chevrolet astro has an accelerator that does not stop its acceleration when the gas pedal is released.depending on the slope of the road, the vehicle may gain speed until it is shifted intoneutral.it is not a big event on dry roads, but yesterday when it happened in the snow, it almost caused a crash.i have had it serviced by different dealers 3 times and am still having the same problem.it is ready to be picked up after taking it in again yesterday for the same problem.it does this on occasion, but very often after being on cruise control.
While traveling at highway speeds the accelerator pedal became stuck. Vehicle continued to accelerate in a run-away mode. Vehicle was eventually stopped through combination of brakes and traveling into mud.upon stopping it was noticed that the front brakes were flaming - most likely due to excessive heat.
Van shut down while driving and we loss brakes.
While traveling at highway speed vehicle would stall out inmiddle of traffic. Managed to restart vehicle.no warning.problemwas intermittent. Not able to restart all the time. Has happened 8 times. Sirs,i recently had to replace the fuel pump in the fuel tank of my 2000 chevy all wheel drive astro van, because it contains the sending unit that controls the fuel gage on the dash, and that funtion failed. The pump had begun to make a loud noise. I have retained the old part.the bill for replaceing the pump, with labor, came to $560.46.i priced a complete dell dimension 2400 computer system, including shipping and it was only $494.00. This is out ragious having to pay $560.46 for an auto fuel pump.where can i get relief? this is a ripoff and it must be stopped.thanks, michael [email protected].
My problems are as follows: fuel injection system, side dooraligment problems, van rattles, dashboard noise.
While driving downhill vehicle cut off, causing it to lose power brakes and power steering due a faulty fuel injection. Dealer has tried to repair, but problem reoccurred.

Hi, i was driving this van when all of a sudden it stops. I had a very hard problem of trying to get off the road with no brakes or steering. I had it towed into service. They replaced everything fuel pump, sending unit, fuel filter, plugs, plug wires, distributor and reset the timing. It never did show up a check engine light or showed a code that something was wrong. I drove it two days later and it did the same thing. They checked it out and drove it again for a week and it happen again. I spent $1200 trying to get this safe to drive. It is as if the key was shut off. Finally with some of my knowledge about what can cause this to happen i checked the battery. It was only one year old. It showed up as bad under a load. When i took the van back to the repair shop they said battery showed good. Finally i took the battery back to auto zone they showed it as bad also and replaced it. Never had a problem after that. So the problem you are having with the key switch in all those cars you may have to double check the battery's. Voltage to the microprocessor should stay within limits of apx 8 volts. This might be more of a problem than the key switch. Thanks for reading this letter.

Door handle on right rear dutch door of our 2000 astro van broke suddenly when trying to open door.while the dutch door feature is operationally very handy, the door design always had a flimsy feel to it - so we always used great care when opening and closing.after it broke, we found the nhtsa #634576 with similar complaints, so felt obligated to add to your list.
2000 astro van with 50,000 miles. Reverse and second gears went out. Now costing $1500 to have the transmission rebuilt. We bought this van new in 2000.
Hard transmission shift on 2nd gear as if being rear ended. Symptoms appears only when vehicle is hot or on long trips.*la
Began slipping out of gear and eventually would not shift into gear.worked when cool, didn't when warm.mechanic stated transmission melted and vacuum hose also melted.coulld have caused fire..

Code 1870 is well documented on multiple web sites.the aluminum valve housing is too small and wears out quickly.the sympton is a very hard shift from 1-2 and 2-3 as if being rear-ended only after the vehicle is hot.chevy has reengineered to a bigger valve but still wants it's customers to pay half of $2000 for a $350-$950 problem that should be covered by it's warrenty.sonnex makes a steel replacement and can verify how frequent the problem is.chevy's aluminum replacement is questionable, let alone the deal they offer.
My ac failed to blow cold after i noted some oil (not motor oil) under the front passenger side of the vehicle. The dealership recharged the system which was apparently empty including dye for which i bore the cost ($200+). Less than 12 hrs later the system no longer blew cold and no fluid was noted under the vehicle. The vehicle was taken back to the dealership for inspection of the dye. The mechanic removed then interior engine hood and found that the ac line had rubbed against the transmission filler tube (now metal on metal). A hole the size of a dime to nickel was in the filler tube and the ac line also had a hole in it. I also have another 2k chevy astro that was diag'd several years ago for the same hole in the ac line but it had not worn a hole in the transmission filler tube. The mechanic had indicated that the ac line was "run that way from the factory". At this point foreign matter has fallen into the transmission including the metal from the filler tube, the black foam cover on the ac line and apparently the freon from the dye recharge. I have to presume other foreign matter has made its way in to filler tube as well. I am now attempting the have gm cover the $1k repair to the ac line and transmission filler tube.
On tuesday , dec. 30, 2003, while attempting to engage the drive on the automatic transmission of my year 2000 chevy astro van, 2wd, the entire shift assembly crumbled in my hands as is it was a piece of candy.i took delivery of this vehicle on 7/20/2000 from bk chevy here in brooklyn, new york.the van doesn't even have 10,000 miles on it!!! it looks brand new on the outside.this is a manufacturer's defect that could have been fatal had the vehicle been in motion. Fortunately i was in park...and the shift assembly broke apart while the vehicle was in park.the vehicle was towed to bk chevy service center for repair.this is going to be an out-of-warranty repair and cost me a lot of money.i have asked for all the broken parts to be placed in the box the new parts came in and i am willing to ship the broken parts for testing to washington, dc.i await instructions.*la
Driver seat belt will come undone while driving. The dealer was notified. Dealer informed the consumer that the part was not covered under a manufacturer extended warranty.the alternator did not charge, rear differential seal leaked, transmission pan leaked and the front pinion leaked. *sc
I am requesting that the vehicle isbought back. No safety defec tmentioned.
The consumer stated that while driving the vehicles automatic transmission did not shift properly in second gear.the dealer inspected it several times when the vehicle was under warrantybutcould not duplicate or correct the problem. *nlm
When taking off consumer would notice vehicle jerking.while vehiclewa sonan incline vehicle wouldroll backwards. Vehicle was serviced, transfer case needed to be replaced.
Design of sliding door is not well done because door will not automatically lock into place, like in other van doors. Contacted dealer.consumer states; if parked on a hill front end down, door can close by itself without warning.also, vehicle experiences loss of braking power, traction, on wet/bumpy roads. *scc
I have a 2000 chevy astro awd that the transmission cooling lines have a bracket that holds the lines to the oil pan.this bracket rubbed holes in both of the lines.if my wife had not seen the fluid on the garage floor when she backed out, the transmission would have burned up.the transmission line has a one inch gash where the bracket held the transmission lines.

Vehicle rollsbackward on an incline while in drive. Dealer has adjustedtransfer case, but problem still exists. *ml
- the contact stated that 2000 chevrolet astro ls' locks failed, not allowing her to gain entrance to the vehicle on october 18, 2006.the failure was due to the door lock actuator melting.the contact stated that the vehicle was towed to eagle automotive.the mechanic replaced the actuator, but removedthe relay because the circuit was continuously closed.the mechanic said that if they didn't remove the relay it would melt the actuator again.the contact stated that she believed the failure will reoccur.the contact stated that she went to monument chevrolet and asked for a print out of the maintenance repairs.the contactfound that this vehicle has been repaired on april 3, 2001 for back door locksand again on february 14, 2002 for thesliding door.the actuator assembly on the right was also replaced on the driver door. The contact stated that the driver door and the sliding door were the only doors on the vehicle that had functioning locks.the contact stated that all of the otherdoor lock handleswerestuck and couldn't be pulled to lock or unlock the doors.she has tried to get resolution from the manufacturer, and they said that because it was not towed to a dealership they would not reimburse her for any repairs. The manufacture was given a file #1-438966317. The contact also sent pictures to the manufacturer of the burnt out actuators and with a certified letter.the consumer stated the brakes failed, however she was told nothing was wrong. The consumer was told the brakes were designed to fail on uneven pavement under 25 mph. The troqued converter burned out. The locks had an electrical short. Updated 03/19/07.
When accelerating the van jerks until you resume one speed, and when turning corners it jerks, and when sitting on an incline ready to pull out when you let off the brake it rolls back.............the van only has 23,000 miles on it......the mechanic that looked at this said it is the viscus clutch in the transfer case, and that he has repaired many astro vans with this problem.i bought this from anindividual just three months ago, and i am told that this will be anywhere from $1,550.00 to $2,000.00 to fix this.i am requesting an investigation into this model of van (astro), and seeing if this will be a recall and fixed at there expense.i feel a van with only 23,ooo miles on it should not have this type of problem.
Front differential failure on a 2000 chevy astro awd with 63k miles.the total differential rebuild was required due to the bearing failure. I believe this failure could have caused a front wheel lock-up if the problem was not detected in time.
Driveline vibration occurs after driving for 15min. Or more. It appears to be related to the awd system.

Seatbelt is unable to give slack for more room.
Driver seat belt will come undone while driving. The dealer was notified. Dealer informed the consumer that the part was not covered under a manufacturer extended warranty.the alternator did not charge, rear differential seal leaked, transmission pan leaked and the front pinion leaked. *sc
Shoulder belts on the rearbenchand buckle does not stay in place. Buckle does not lay on the hips, but moves up to occupant's chest. Van converted by tiara. Chevrolet and tiara were notified about the problem.problem has not been corrected. Both the belt and buckle arenon- rachetting, and not possible to secure the seats in the rear bench.
Seat belts do not stay in locking position.they ride up into consumer's chest. These seat belts came from a tiara conversion van. . the rear seats also do not have properly functioning seat belts. The child seat would not stay in place because the seat belts do not stay in locking position.
The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet astro. The contact was unable to pull the front passenger seat belt out of the retractor.the dealer and wanted $250 to repair it. The contact stated that since this was a safety issue it should be repaired at no cost.the failure mileage was 72,000.the current mileage was 80,000. The vin unknown.

I entered a parking lot at 10 mph and slowed to 5 mph and turned left into a parking space and tried to stop. The brakes did not work and i crashed into the vehicle next to me. I immediately checked the brake fluid level and it was full. No abs light has ever been on, and i just recently passed my vehicle safety check with no codes on the system.
Abs system activated on dry pavement while parking the car. Brake peddle went to the floor car kept moving it seem to want to accelerate. It hit the opposing parked vehicle. This has been a intermittent problem. Mechanics could not find problem prior to accident after accident had vehicle repaired at chevy dealer hubs and sensors replacedthis vehicle is very scary to drive.even after repairs the abs system can still function inappropriately without any warning.
While driving the 2000 chevy astro the engine shut off and no brakes.happened to me in two weeks. Life or death situation.
In fall of 2004 i began to notice that the anti-lock brakes were not working properly.when coming to a stop they would kick in while i was gradually stopping, then disengage at the last minute, causing me to nearly collide with whatever was in front of me! i drove under these conditions for a short time, nearly causing an accident on several occasions.subsequently, my husband removed the fuse to disarm the anti-lock brakes.i was in the process of investigating what might have caused the problem and how much it should cost, since i do not entirely trust the dealership (classic chevrolet) to be honest with me, based on past experiences.please refer to the investigation announced on may 2, 2005 which does not mention the chevrolet astro van (2000).
Have brought van in 4 times in 4 years about electrical problems. Smelling wires burning.have gone through 6 batteries in 4 years.replaced alternator.radio/cd has been replaced. New cd stoped working after 1 week of being replaced.dealer refuses to replace again.radio, overhead digital temp & misc gages goes out, speedometor, battery, fuel, and odomoter quits, only the oil still works.abs breaking probems, pedel to floor, have ran intersections due to this.have had minor dings to bumper because it rolled to stops at low speeds. Loud clunk in rear when stopped too. Dealer refused to call it a lemon.refused to help fix because its a lease.also handle over passenger airbag disintegrated in 3rd year, and now the driver arm rest is split in 4th year.
I have a 4 year old chevy astro van with a kelsey hayes ebc unit. Recently the abs light started coming on from time to time when the engine had been running for a while, but it would go off when the vehicle was turned off and restarted cold. I had my brake system checked and there was nothing wrong with the brakes. The code indicated a bad relay in the computer control system. The problem is that it causes the abs light to come on and when that happens i have no abs working. This could cause a safety issue under certain braking conditions. The light doesn't come on all the time so the question is do i pay over $900 for something that i believe to be a manufacturing defect or do i take a chance that when i need my brakes that the abs system will work. As of now, i have not replaced the part. The dealer indicated that the part # was 12478045 . This part cannot be purchased except through a dealer. It is their product.
I have had many electrical problems with my chevrolet astro van. 2000 year model. I have only 60,000 miles and it's been in for changing of oxygen sensor twice a new catalytic converteer installed in the first 4000 miles. At 7000 miles i had to have some connector replaced because my van would go for about 5 miles and then just die on me, like no getting fuel. Now for the past 6 months i am having a problem with my brake and abs lite coming on and when i put on the brakes they grab and let go and it takes a long time to stop. I have taken it to many places and everyone tells me they can't find nothing wrong. I had it hooked up to the see what the computer fault was and it says the relay. The relay is 800.00 dollars and the mechanic says it may still not be the problem.

I read in the local paper that the nhtsa has opened an investigation of general motors antilock braking systems. My chevrolet astro van has experienced the same problem - antilock braking engaging at low speeds due to corrosion in and around 1 or more of the axle speed sensors. I removed the antilock main fuse to de-energize the system. This is not a permanent fix but does remove the immediate danger. I know of another astro, owned by some close friends, with the identical problem.
When applying the brakesthe brake pedal goes to the floor, almost resulting in a collision.took vehicle to dealer, anddealer was not able to solve the problem.

The "brake" and "abs" lights come on simultaneously. The jn chevrolet dealership says the vehicle abs has failed and the van only has 'regular' brakes. This seems suspicious as the vehicle abs is not supposed to fail.
2000 chevy astro van abs problem. While traveling at low speed cities, parking lots etc... When attempting to stop the abs appears to kick on causing failure to stop. I have had several near accidents with my children in the van recently. Mechanics say maybe master cylinder, maybe belts, maybe????can anyone say recall???
Dt:problem with brakes and bearings last year the brakes starting pulsating and had to be replaced because of rusting and pitting. This year the bearings went out and had to be replaced.this vehicle has 34,000 original miles.
Tires wer wearing out oninside ,andabs brakingsystemmalfunctioned.. Whenapplyingbrakespedal was hard, andvehicle went into another vehicle without prior warning. Also transfer case needed to be replaced.
Consumer was pulling into parking spot &lost powersteering & brakes went straight to the floor .consumer cut vehicle off & put emergency brake on to stop it.vehicle started up again after leaving off for a while.consumer will be contacted.
The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet astro.the contact stated that as the vehicle comes to a rolling stop, the antilock brakes activate and he loses control of the brakes.the failure only occurs when driving at low speeds such as 5 mph and approaching a stop.he stated that the failure began a few days ago and has gradually increased in severity.the current mileage was 108,225 and failure mileage was 108,175.
At 3-4 mphpowersteering/brakeswent out.towed to dealer, powersteering pump had failed.when the brakes and the steering failed, the vehicle coasted into a telephon pole causing $4,000 damages to the vehicle.the manufacturer paid for everything.
Dt:while driving at real low speeds the anti-lock brakes kicked into gear and it washard to getthe vehicle to stop.the consumer contacted gm but received no response.the consumer then tookthe vehicle to the local dealer and the mechanic disconnected the abs system. This problem started onaugust 1, 2005.the consumer could hear the brakes pulsating. *mr
Dt:the check engine light comes on and off. The abs system activates while driving onthe highway. Also, the abs light comes on.it does this off and on by itself. This started onaugust 1, 2005. There is a recall, chevroletis still recalling, but not sure at this time if consumer's vehicleis included.
Has a hard time stopping/ when stopping you can hear the anti-lock system surge and the brake pedal goes to the floor./this is more pronounced when the ground is rough and your trying to stop.
Intermittently when applyingbrakes rear wheels lock up and front wheels turn, resulting in poor stopping.dealer has inspectedvehicle.
The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet astro. The contact stated when braking on any uneven road surface, the anti-lock brake system would activate independently with the illumination of the abs warning light making it difficult to stop the vehicle. The contact stated that the vehicle was involved in three separate crashes as a result of the failure. On one occasion while traveling 45 mph, the brakes were applied abruptly but did not respond and the contact crashed into another vehicle. There was one reported injury and a police report was filed. The contact stated that the abs was activated at the time of the crash.the failure mileage was 80,000 and the current mileage 151,000.
Dt*:the contact stated the abs activated at speeds of less than 5mph.while pulling into a parking lot the abs activated and caused a total loss of the brakes.there was no warning before the activations occurred.there is a service bulletin, nhtsa item # 10000062 for the abs activation.the vehicle had not been inspected.
Dt:on september 19, 2005, at slow speed the brakes failed andvehiclecrashed into a pole. Took the vehicle to the dealer, and they said it was the same exact problems asstated in the the recall but at this time they awere not sure if this vehicle wa sincluded in the recall due to vin. They said to contacted nhtsa too. This was the first time this had happened then the day i took it to the dealer it did it again. The dealerremoved the wheel sensors and cleaned them. The brake pedal pulsated and there vibration in the pedal also. No brake lights came on.
Abs braking system failed to slow vehicle down.dealer/mechanic contacted, and consumer was told that nothing was operating improperly.please fill in additional information.
Dt: the contacts stated that the abs activated at low speeds when applying brake pressure.took the vehicle to a dealer, whodiscovered a failure withinthe wheel speed sensors, and those were replaced.about 25000 miles later the problem returned.the dealer performed a diagnostic test, but the dealer could not detect a code.the contact continued to experience an intermittent activation at low speeds.no further repairs have been made.
Dt:the consumer stated his wife put her foot on the brake and it did not stop; it accelerated when she hit the brake and she hit two parked cars on 7-23-05. She was going approx. 3-5 mph. This is not the first time this has happened. Previously, they had felt some pulsating in the pedal, but it became progressively worse. This is the first time they have felt it accelerate.no lights came on prior to this or previously. This occurred during normal braking, on a dry road.
Ongoing abs failure;brake pedal would go tofloor when applying brakes, and vehicle would continue on without stopping.vehicle been todealer's shop on five occasions, and they are unable to duplicate problem. Feel free to provide any further information on this matter.
Consumer was traveling 35mph on a side streetand was approaching a stop signappliedbrakes, pedal was hard, andantilockbrake system kicked in, and didn't react.hit vehicle from behind.upon impact, dual airbags didn't deploy dealership was aware ofproblem.
When applyingbrakespedal pushes back up, and then vehicle accelerates, cause unknown.
1) several times (~10) in the past few weeks when we're almost to a stop (~ 5mph) the abs kicks in and it feels like we're losing braking power2) we have been able to stop, but it feels like a crash is bound to happen3) independent mechanic indicates computer code telling loss of wheel speedgm has a recall of the front wheel hub/bearing assembly for exactly this reason - but it doesn't include the astro - only "trucks" - why not the astro???it's basically the same vehicle.
When driving in wet weather conditions and upon depressing brake pedal to make a graudal stop while traveling 25-30 mph pedal traveled to the floorboard, causing extended stopping distance.consumer has contacteddealer, dealer unable to determine the cause. But,has replacedmaster cylinder. However, problem still occurs. Please provide any further details.
I have tried to work with chevrolet the corporation and the dealership on this braking problem i have been having, the brakes pump then go to the floor not always stopping my vehicle. They have had my van for over a week now and still say they cant find nothing. My husband and i have both experieced this problem, we had it in the shop last july and they said their was nothing. We feel this is dangerous and compromised my saftey and the safety of my children. Please help.
While applyingbrakesvehicle continues to travel. Dealer has been notified. Please provide further informaton.
Intermittently and at any speed, when the brakes were applied, the vehicle would slide.the dealer examined the vehicle and found that the abs sensor needed to be replaced.after several months, the sensor went out again.
While driving in reverse and backing out of a driveway, brake system failed unexpectedly (odi reference:8002090), andaccelerator stuck, causing sudden acceleration.vehicle crashed into an electrical box and knocked out a transformer.on 20-dec-2001,dealership had cleanedthrottle because of a hesitation with accelerator pedal.please provide any additional information / documentation.
When attempting to back out of driveway and applyingbrakes they failed to activate, causing unwanted and unexpected acceleration, causingvehicle to crash into an electrical transformer box. Consumer has contacteddealer on several occasions regardingbrake master cylinder leaking fluid.please provide any further details.
Brake failure while applying brakes and approaching a stop intersection, and vehicle continued without stopping.dealer notified, and was unable to duplicateproblem.
I attempted to stop behind a car making a turn.as i depressed the brakes there was no response,the pedal went to the floor.after i purchased the van i had taken the van to the dealer about the brakes were not right, but i was told that was the abs brakes were like that.later i took it again in the winter when i checked the brakes on snow.the brakes were making a grinding sound--again the dealer said that's normal.i am not driving it now because i feel it is unsafe.after several calls to gm allegation department i have not heard from them about air bags that did notdeploy.this accident with the van involved two other cars and injuries to two people.i have seen several 2000 astro vans have the same problems submitted to your web page. They too are afraid of driving the vans.we need help.;
While braking on a slick road surface or with wet disks or while hitting a bump, the anti lock brakes activate but fail to re-engage.this causes the vehicle to continue with out slowing down.if the pedal is released and re-applied sometimes you can stop the vehicle or the emergency brake can be applied.this has happened to me on several occasions and in two different 2000 astros which have been assigned to me.in speaking to three other drivers at our office, they have experienced the same problems.in my opinion this vehicle is very dangerous to drive, especially in bad weather.
When i apply brakes while driving at slow speeds (about 10 mph), the anti-lock braking system engages.this greatly increases the stopping distance, and gives the feeling that the vehicle may not stop as intended.this failure can also cause the vehicle to "pull" to left or right during the application of the brakes.
Dt*:the contact stated the abs activates at speeds below 5 mph.this causes an excessive stopping distance.there is a nhtsa recall, # 05v379000, regarding the antilock brakes.the vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however, it is not included in the recall due to the vin.updated 4/11/2006 -
Ant-lock brake system had to replaced. Also, since purchase in may 2000, following components had to be replaced or repaired: lights on dashboard coming off and on/passenger side seatbelt tightened and won't release/driver's seat had loose bolts andmoved/driver and passenger doors rattled/ mouldings inside fell off/passenger's window stuck/tv came on and off on its own while driving, replaced twice/interior lights stopped working when in park/ engine idled/ lights inside flickered/ fuel sender inoperative/ wires in ceiling rattling, air conditioner in rear not working/ replacedheater that did not work in rear, and passenger's airbag cover not flushing, and consumer worried it may deploy at any time.
Brakes have failed and been fixed 3 times. Each incident put myself and children in the middle of an intersection unexpectedly. It has been at two different dealers 3 times. Each time we were told it was fixed. Wrong!the brakes go to the floor without any warning! we had close calls each time. Just missing other vehicles. Does someone have to be killed before this problem is resolved?
Wheneverbrakes are applied hard they lock up and begin to make a sqeaking sound.dealer ahs bene contacted.
My 2000 chevrolet astro van with all wheel drive intermittently fails to stop at low speeds due to inappropriate activation of the anti lock braking system.this condition has nearly resulted in several accidents that jeopardized the safety of people and property, such as when traveling in parking lots and crowded city streets.the abs system failure does not register a service code, and the problem was not recognized by service department at the local gm dealership, who replaced transfer case fluid in the absence of having a clue. Through self diagnosis, the problem was confirmed to be the abs sytem because the brakes operate normally when the fuse is removed from the wiring block slot labeled abs.due to the absence of any physical damage to the vehicle, and the failure of the vehicles diagnostic system to detect this proble, it is clearly a defect in the vehicle or components design or construction.owners should not have to pull fuses on safety system in order for the brakes to work when necessary.nhtsa should evaluate the aggregate number of complaints already issued with this problem, and understand that the gm trained service technicians are not helping owners remedy or understand this defect exists.a recall notice should be issued.
While driving at low speedshydraulic antilock braking system does not operate properly which causesextended stopping distance.also, vehicle won't start at various times.
Driving in light traffic, vehicle in front slowed, upon applying brake, pedal went right to the floorboard without stopping vehicle resulting in collision. Dealer and gmc will only road-test vehicle, refuse to inspect braking system.
The abs light illuminated intermittently.
The brakes were applied they did not stop the vehicle.the dealer diagnosed that the antilock module was the cause of the failure.*nlm
I have a 2000 chevrolet astro mini van.atapproximately 65000 miles, just after the warranty expired i started havingtwo lights illuminateon instrument cluster.one is a red brake light , andthe other is anamber abs light.i took vehicleto the chevroletdealer.they told me it was the brake control module which needed to be replaced at a cost of $1000.00.once the unit heats up and the lights come on the abs no longer works, and the brakes becomejerky.also the two lights blind you at night whenyou drive.the unit is on the outside of the carunder the driver's seat next to the exhaust pipe.itold them they needed to fix it, and they refused, saying it was out of warranty.i told them that itwas a design flaw because it was placed next to theexhaust.theindividual at the dealer told me this was acommon problem with gm trucks and vans.it wassafetyissue and gmrefusedto fix it.
Unwanted abs activation at low speeds causing increased stopping distance.
Design of sliding door is not well done because door will not automatically lock into place, like in other van doors. Contacted dealer.consumer states; if parked on a hill front end down, door can close by itself without warning.also, vehicle experiences loss of braking power, traction, on wet/bumpy roads. *scc
When driving on wet pavement there is extendedstopping distance, but on dry pavement brfakes work fine. Contacted dealer.
There is pulsation when braking this only happens on snow covered roads. Vehicle taken to dealer numerous time but they cannot remedy the problem. Nlm
Consumer complained about a brakeproblem.while driving downhill brakes overheated. Also, there was a very strong smell, like burned rubber.consumer tookvehicle to the dealer. But dealer could not duplicate the problem. Dealer urged consumer to take vehicle to another dealership.however, consumer feltthat travel time to the alternate dealership would be a safety hazard. The rotors an dpads were replaced at 28k milesthere were rusted and cracked.on multiple occasions the brakes overheated when descending steep grades.the brake problem was unable to be duplicated. *sc

Upon approach to an intersection, i began to slow down early because the road was covered with ice and snow.the vehicle began to slide a little, so i pressed firmly on the brake to engage the abs brakes.i heard a very loud snap! and the brake pedal was gone from beneath my foot.the vehicle proceeded into the intersection, narrowly missing becoming broadsided from the left.i swung the steering wheel to the right, engaged the parking brake (which did little to slow forward momentum) and waited while the vehicle rolled to a stop, inches from a telephone pole.***upon being towed to a dealership for repair, it was discovered that the problem was catastrophic failure of the master cylinder component in the braking system.the metal casting has a crack which is almost 6 inches long which runs along the underside of the part for almost its full length.the metal wall of the cylinder has been extruded by the force of the explosion which occurred during braking.***i have the part and i am willing to share photographs of the problem.***it is interesting to note that a chevrolet representative, contacted after the fact, told me that this failure was most likely due to "bad braking habits".
The problem has progressively gotten worse, up to the point when my wife and three children coasted through a busy intersection with no breaks. Midway chevrolet's service department was contacted and did not seem to be too concerned with the problem and advised me to drive it across town to their service deprtment.
The brakes went to the floor and after being pumped a few times actually slowed the vehicle down. This has happened a few times but unable to reproduce at dealership.this vehicle has been to shop too many times for many items including side door rattles, ignition problem with security feature, windshield ect.*la
Brake and gas pedals are too close together.when applying brake pedalit's difficult to keep foot off gas pedal.
Told by dealer that a single hydraulic pump is used for both steering and brakes-if pump fails you loose brakes & steering at the same time.

This might be more of a problem than the key switch. Thanks for reading this letter.
2000 chevrolet astro van lost all steering capabilities, wheels turned immediately to the right and the steering wheel locked. The mechanic informed the consumer that the drs steering unit ripped out of the frame.

Van was being backed into driveway, steering and brakes went hard and belt started to squeal for about 6 seconds.belt squeal stopped but steering and brakes did not return.during inspection found power steering shaft broken.
Power steering pump failed causing the power steering to fail and also causing power assisted brakes to fail.
Events leading up to the failure of my incidents were just normal driving conditions and at a very minimal low speed, in which i was just driving and all of a sudden had no power steering or brakes. I was scared to death to no i had know control of my vehicle all of a sudden.my consequences were none other than the scare of my life and the realization that this could have been fatal had i been going faster or on a highwayor any other road than a subdivision road. This situation occurred due to the power steering pump, which has a hydraulic vacuum booster for the brakes and all works together .after speaking to a service clerk at the car dealer and stating this was something i thought was a safety concern to be just driving along and lose control of your steering and brakes, he agreed.the problems was fixed by installing a new power steering pump and fluid and cleaning chemistry etc. Totaling a total of $636.32.
At 3-4 mphpowersteering/brakeswent out.towed to dealer, powersteering pump had failed.when the brakes and the steering failed, the vehicle coasted into a telephon pole causing $4,000 damages to the vehicle.the manufacturer paid for everything.
Inside power steering pump shaft snapped ,will lose steering and brakes. This causes dangerous condition with loss of steering and brake failure.
Power steering pump went out, which rendered power steering and brakes inoperative!!backing out of driveway, couldn't stop, went across traffic, up into cul de sac (thank goodness no other vehicles coming).$800 repair!!!only 50,000 +/- miles on vehicle.
While driving vehicle stalled, and brake pedalwent down to the floor due topower steering pump malfunctioning.

The brakes went to the floor and after being pumped a few times actually slowed the vehicle down. This has happened a few times but unable to reproduce at dealership.this vehicle has been to shop too many times for many items including side door rattles, ignition problem with security feature, windshield ect.*la
My problems are as follows: fuel injection system, side dooraligment problems, van rattles, dashboard noise.
Sliding door would closewhenever parked on a decline, there is nothingto lockdoor in that situation. Dealer notified, and informed consumer it cannot be fixed, and nothing will be done.vehicle stalled intermittently hot or cold on very light acceleration from a stop, dealer could not find problem, service engine light also illuminated.rear liftgate hatch binded due to lack of lubrication.
The vehicle experienced sudden acceleration, which resulted in an accident. Also the sliding door, slammed shut when entering or exiting the vehicle if the front of the vehicle was on an incline.
Design of sliding door is not well done because door will not automatically lock into place, like in other van doors. Contacted dealer.consumer states; if parked on a hill front end down, door can close by itself without warning.also, vehicle experiences loss of braking power, traction, on wet/bumpy roads. *scc
Sliding door hingesbroke, causing door to be off track.dealer will repairvehicle.
I have a 2000 chev astro pass. Van ls ext sport. Both driver and passenger doors are separating from thier hinges. The adhesive is failing, and i and afraid the doors will fall off.
The rear inside door handle broke off the door panel.consumer was unable to exit the vehicle from the inside. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
Dt*:the contact stated the pin that holds the passenger side door fell out causing the door to fall off.the dealer has not been alerted. Updated 9/28/2006 -

- the contact stated that2000 chevrolet astro vanhad upper ball joint problems . The upper ball joints havebeen replaced twice.the contact stated that he felt this was a safety issue because the upper ball joints could separate, and the driver couldlose control of the vehicle, causing a crash.the vehiclewasnow at dealership for replacement ball joints at 130,000 miles.the first time this happen the ball joint was saved, and the contact was told that the ball joint was completely dry.the contact doeshas access to the last ball joints that were replaced.there were no crashes involvingthe ball joints, but felt this could cause a crash.

Oem carpet covering the interior engine cowling is curling up, causing it to interfere with the travel of the gas pedal.gas pedal cannot come back to its resting position, causing the vehicle to continue to accelerate.
His site was sent to us and we are concerned with the discrepancies in the mileage on the odometer on a van we made a down payment on to buy. The numbers just don't match and there is a period of 7 months van cannot be accounted for. The dealer said he had no information on previous owner, although in nov. 2002, the same dealer changed oil, then 7 months lapse. Can you help us ? the van is a year 2000 astro and we are trying to find out about the mileage. Thanks [email protected]. *nlm
My problems are as follows: fuel injection system, side dooraligment problems, van rattles, dashboard noise.
Van was in park and driver standing alongside vehicle when she turned the ignition off.as soon as the engine was off the van proceeded to roll backwards making a clicking noise.driver tryed to enter the van to stop it and was drug by the van on the concrete.the van proceeded until hitting the back of a concrete block building.
The contact owns a 2000 chevrolet astro van. While the cruise control was set at speeds of 65 mph, the brake pedal was applied to disengage the cruise control. However, there was no response. The vehicle continued to abnormally accelerate while the brakes were applied. There was an extremely loud roaring noise coming from the engine with an increase in the rpms. The vehicle was rapidly approaching a traffic light and the gear was shifted into neutral position. The engine was turned off.the vehicle was coasted to a stop with very limited braking power. After several moments, the vehicle was able to restart. The vehicle was able to resume operation. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The cpu (central processing unit) and optical wheel sensors were intermittently faulty which required replacement. The sensors were cleaned to correct the problem. The identical failure occurred on a separate occasion. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer that advised the replacement of the entire cpu. The vehicle has not been repaired. The failure and current mileages were 130,000. Updated 4/26/10 updated 06/17/10
When applyingbrakespedal pushes back up, and then vehicle accelerates, cause unknown.
The vehicle experienced sudden acceleration, which resulted in an accident. Also the sliding door, slammed shut when entering or exiting the vehicle if the front of the vehicle was on an incline.
Uncontrolled engine acceleration: without warning, the engine revved to full throttle.the car continued to accelerate even with foot off gas pedal and full brakes applied.the cause was identified as a broken accelerator cable.the breakage occurred near the gas pedal.the car had 48,000 miles.the gas pedal had been "jerky" intermittently on initial depression for the preceding year.dealership servicing attributed this to a dirty throttle body, which was cleaned and "deferred."but 6 weeks later, this break in the accelerator cable occurred.
Vehicle was shiftedinto park to open gate. Uponreturning shiftedgear into drive andvehicle kept goingfoward with high speed. Consumer appliedbrakes, andvehicle continued to travel.as a result, ran into a house. Please provide further information.
While driving 70 mphaccelerator pedal got stuck. When the driver tapped the pedal to release it pedalwent to the floor, and the vehicle sped to 100 mph.driver had toput the vehicle into neutral and shut the vehicle off. The vehicle was towed to the nearest dealer.

Onpassenger's side there's plenty of heat, but ondriver's dide there is no heat at all.

This is a serious problem, we have contacted several auto glass dealers and found this to be an ongoing problem, how can a mfg. Pf any auto continue to pruduce this kind of shoddy workmanship and continue to sell autos? i usally go to the side door and wait for me husband to unlock the door for myself and our son if i had been standing near this day we would have both been injured by the exploding glass! please do all that you can to ensure the continued safety of all!! thank you sally fiske
Entire seal was lifting from top and down both sides, water leaking in at top of windshield, entire windshield and sealhad to be reset.tried going to dealer about bulletin they said they heard of no such thing on my van year or type. Ended up having to pay whole cost myself.
Side doorwindow on passenger's side blewout without any indication. Please provide further information.
The side window of the astro mini-van tilts out and is suppose to "lock" into position.however, at speeds over 50mph; this window slams shut without warning.one time my son had his hand out the window and it slammed shut on his fingers.i'm concerned that the "locking" mechanism needs to be improved so this will not happen.
