Dt:consumer reports: she had an automobile accident and the air bags failed to deploy.she was going approx. 30 mph when she hit someone with thefront end of her vehicle. She was told by the wrecker service that her sensor was hit. A mechanic also told her that the sensor was hit and the air bags should have deployed.

Dt*:the contact stated while driving 25 mph towards an intersection the vehicle was impacted by another vehicle and then crashed to a light post.the airbags did not deploy and the driver seat belt did not restrain the contact who impacted the steering wheel.the air bags and seat belts warning lights did not illuminated prior the impact.the police department reported the accident and the fire department evacuated the contact to the nearest hospital.a child riding on the passenger side was restrained by the seat belt and suffered no injuries, however the first impact occurred on the passenger side.the vehicle has not been inspected by the dealer.the inoperable vehicle was towed to the owner residence.

Front end collision hit center on air bag sensor, no deployment. Seat belts did not restrain myself or passenger. Damage to front frame section had to replace. Total repair bill over $6000.00 dollars. I had hit the steering wheel causing brain injury, soft tissue damage, lt wrist, left side of body brusing ? on damage to my liver & gaull bladder. Still under invesgation had to have surgery. My son had knee brusing from hitting full force into lower part of dash. Taken to hospital via ambo unconsious for 5 hours not remembering the accident. Just 10 months out of brain surgery just got released to drive now i have a onset of siezures that were controled by meds. Because of my restaint system i am not allowed to drive again. If it had worked i do not think i would of been hurt so bad. *la

I own a 1998 astro van. I was involved in a headon collision . My air bags did not deploy, nor did my seat belts restrain me from hitting the steering wheel. My son was not restrained either. We both had injuries. Estimate cost of repairs 7-8,000.00 worth the damage. There is severe frame damage that requires a sub frame to be replaced. I need to know if this is a ongoing problem with front end collisons that the air bags do not deploy, or does the seat belt not restrain you?

Driver hardly tapped the bumper of vehicle ahead of her's,and both air bags deployed. There was no damages done to the van or the other vehicle. The air bags are being replaced.

Vehicle caught fire while parked in driveway, the fire started in third row bench seats of vehicle and also caused damage to the vinyl siding on the consumers home as well as the garage, the cause of the fire was undetermined, fire department determined possible mechanical failure.

Factory installed pass lock security system.it malfunctioned, and it shuts down the fuel system. The car just quits where ever it is . I have spent lots of money and 2 weeks without my car as a result of the inability of repair people to diagnose the problem. To make matters worse after one week and finally finding out the problem, it is taking another week to get the parts in illinois. While this is not something that caused an injury in this case. It is my understanding that this could happen on the highway and cause a horrendous mess. I also asked the dealer if he could just disconnect it and was told no!!!

The captioned vehicle on 7/27/99 was towed to the dealer as a result of a dangerous safety hazzard. The acid from the battery leaked over a period of time and corroded the thebattery tray, the cable and all associated parts. The system was replaced by the dealer under warranty. At a cost of $230.00. On 9/27/00, the battery leaked again creating extensive poisonous fumes and danger when the hood was opened to check why the vehicle refused to operate. Once again the vehicle was towed but the dealer and manufacturer refused to honor the warrnanty even though this second incident was directly related to the hazzard of 7/99. The battery and its components posed a dangerous hazzard to the occupants emiting poisonous gasses and should be reviewed or recall . I injestedfumes from the vehicle when the hood was released to check the engine. On 8/30/99 vehicle was taken to the dealer for the second time because of water leaks. Dealer attempted to fixed vehicle but the leaks continues to satuate the vehicle whenever it rains. On 9/30/00 the alternator had to be replace because thebattery and its components short circuit the alternator and burned it out . I believe that this vehicle failed to meet the safety standards, requires and should be recall.

Pulled fuse.has had vibration in driveline since purchased no one can find anything sugeestion range from replace all u joints, did some of them no better to replace rear end. It is not possible in nova scotia to obtain a blasting permit to blow up your car even if you take precautions and hire a professional. I have never in 40 years of driving some bad stuff from old english cars to transport trucks with more miles than there are numbers, ever had this kind of problem, most things can be fixed. You have never lived until you have taken the whole dash apart on one of these, the vehicle was designed by madmen.

Diagnostic system was defective and didn't provide warning that the engine was overheating.the book states the service engine soon light comes on to indicate that there is a problem and service is required.malfunctions often will be indicated by the system before any problem is apparent. This system is also designed to assist your service technician in correctly diagnosing any malfunction. None of this worked on the van.

Van shifts from 1st to 2nd realy hard. When i tried to get it repaired nothing was done except for a fluid change. The van still had the same problems. My steering also went out;i had my children with me on a busy road speed limit 45.i went to make a left had turn and had extreme difficulty in turning my wheel. I had to unbuckle my seatbelt; to pull on the steering wheel with all my body weight, and still couldn't make the turn, i had to back up and try to turn again.i continue to have frontend,window,fuel injection, doors not wanting to lock and unlock properly and i still continue to have these problems. Throttle control pedal "sticks" and excessive pressure must be applied to overcome resistance. Mass airflow sensor has a short service light.this sensor began to malfunction around 52000 miles, sending a code to the obd ll system resulting in a check engine light.this is way too soon for this type of component to fail, and the component is only available through general motors dealers at a lofty price.*la

I have a 1998 chevy astro van that qualifies for a expired warranty for gm that is related to a defect in their fuel injection system that causes them to stick open or closed. I was never notified by chevy about this problem and was not properly diagnosed by a mechanic until this year. The bulletin/warranty number is: 99066e and it states that all repairs relating to this problem would be covered no charge to the vehicle owner as long as it's within 10 years or 200,000 miles. So, i'm 3 years out of warranty and i have 217,000 miles. It doesn't seem right that chevy never contacted me about this and i've had to pay for numerous repairs related to the fuel system in this vehicle over the years without that could have been avoided if i had my fuel injection system fixed. These vans are known to run up to 450,000 miles. The operation of my vehicle is vital in this economy. I really would appreciate this warranty extended to me. I have contacted chevy/gm and they just read the warranty back and deny me repair or tell me to get it fixed at the dealership. Why should i have to pay for a repair that there is a warranty that states that they are at fault and it's related to fuel deposits in california fuel?

Fuel injector system failed.

Fuel injection line needed to be replace don two occasions within a yea.; dealer notified and informed consumer that nothing can be done until there isa correction in the grade of fuel used in california. Can nhtsa provide additional information or help in this matter. How can this go on knowing what it can do, but yet no correction to the prolem can be found until they can the grade of fuel.

Power loss-due to harness connectorat top of the tank,were it connects to the module, was burned and along with the module wiring inside fuel tank.cause vehicle to stop operating.

When starting or stopping the vehicle, the fuel shifting in the tank is so hard it feels like the vehicle has been rearended.this happens when the tank is full to three quarters full.

Parked uphill or incline position sliding door unlatches which may cause injuries to the occupant in the doorway.please provide further information.

Door latches do not hold the vehicles' door open when parked on incline/decline position causing injury to consumer when slammed by door when entering vehicle.

The sliding door on the passenger's side does not lock when the door is pushed back. The door will shut on the slightest movement. Which could cause injuries to occupants when entering or exiting the vehicle.the manufacture/dealer has been notified about the problem. The dealer could not rectify.

When the vehicle is parked on a decline the doors do not lock in an open position after opening and slam shut.

I have a 1998 chevrolet astro. The rear hatch will not open. I had it at the dealer twice for this problem. Now it is out of warranty it has failed again. This is an obvious design flaw. I'v herd other complants about the same problem. Is there anything i can do about this. Thank you randy.

Van shifts from 1st to 2nd realy hard. When i tried to get it repaired nothing was done except for a fluid change. The van still had the same problems. I only attemped two times because i cant aford to pay that much money and the problem to not get fixed. The air and heat only blowes out on the passenger side.

I own a 1998 astro van. I was involved in a headon collision . My air bags did not deploy, nor did my seat belts restrain me from hitting the steering wheel. My son was not restrained either. We both had injuries. Estimate cost of repairs 7-8,000.00 worth the damage. There is severe frame damage that requires a sub frame to be replaced. I need to know if this is a ongoing problem with front end collisons that the air bags do not deploy, or does the seat belt not restrain you?

I had to unbuckle my seatbelt; to pull on the steering wheel with all my body weight, and still couldn't make the turn, i had to back up and try to turn again.i continue to have frontend,window,fuel injection, doors not wanting to lock and unlock properly and i still continue to have these problems. I have a 1998 chevy astro 2wd we bought with 23k mi. In 2000.roughly 2 years ago we had all new brakes (head to toe, front & back) installed again.we have had nothing but issues with our abs mainly when traveling under 15 mph, when you try and stop it grabs heavily or sometimes almost not at all.just last year we had the front brakes re-done again and still the problem persists.i have seen many other complaints on the web for this type of issue.we only travel 12-14k miles a year with the vehicle and most of the driving is on country roads.we notice it the most when we are dropping the kids off at school or picking them up or pulling into or out of the garage.the jerking action has caused major front end assembly damage to the van where we had to replace most of those pieces as well.after dumping almost $2200 into the van and still have the same issue, this is why i am filing this complaint.this should be a recall issue, cause it is dangering the lives of my family and other around us.i believe it is a bad sensor. We will also file a complaint with the attorney general of illinois lisa madigan as this is more than just one incident across the u.s. Vehicle in for service. Mechanic left vehicle running & shut doors. Vehicle caught on fire in door area & locked it. Broke window to enter & put flames out. No work being done on door at time of flames. Mechanic will check for cause of fire.

Sliding door on side of vehicle in 1997 and 1998 models does not have a mechanism to ensure the door stays open until needed to be shut.if the vehicle is parked on a slope or if someone uses the door as leverage to climb into the vehicle, the door shuts on them, causing loss of balance and/or being crushed by the door.the 1996 model had a latch that engaged when the door was fully opened, and was disengaged by the door handle.dealer stated the 1997 and 1998 were designed without the latch.i had a 1996 which i traded in because of numerous problems.i transport 4 and 6 year old children in the van daily.when they are boarding, i am at the side door to ensure it does not slam on them.when i took possession of the vehicle from the dealer, the service person thought the latch was defective, and indicated he could fix it at the 3000 mile check.when i brought it in for service, he realized the model modifications.these cause a safety problem which can potentially cause boarding passenger to loose their balance when the door starts closing, or be slammed into the body of the vehicle when the door shuts on them.

I have had problems with my vehicle staying in alignment. I have taken back, they say it is many things. But i have had afront put on rotors,brakes,caliburs,shims,alignments,tirebalance,i still have pulling. And a mechanic said it is the calibur bolt and washer. But they said no. Request another vehicle (van/suv) and reimbursement for rental cars due to their defective vehicle.*ph the same day the consumer purchased the vehicle he drove two blocks and the van stopped, the engine light had illuminated.the consumer walked back to car lot and the was told everything was fine that the mechanic had checked over everything completely and to just fill the vehicle up with gas.when the consumer had the vehicle inspected, it was discovered that the water pump was leaking and there was a crack in the cylinder head, also the front shocksand idler arms were replaced.

Front suspension torsion bar broke while driving 5 mph. Consumer contacted the dealer, and was informed that the part was not covered under a manufacturer's recall.

I own a 1990 chevrolet astro (van) and a 1998 astro. The 1998 van is 18 inches longer then the 1990 .the extra 18 inches were added to the samesuspension as the 1990 astro.the 1998 astro has a bad sway to the rear suspenison weather you have slowed to turn into to a drive way or makinga curve on the highway this van would still be rockingafter you had completed this task. I have never been car sick in my life but sitting in the third seat would make you feel ill. On the 18th of feb. My worst nightmare come true while travling over a mt.pass(oregon hwy #20) i hit a patch of black ice i did all the right thing but the rear of that van had it own agenda.witness state that they were shocked on how the rear of the vanrocked or swayed the way it did and that were lucky that it did not roll . I have been talking withowners of this same type of van and most of them feel the same about the rear suspension. One person also stated that they had heard that there is some type of repair kit out to correct this problem . That is news to me!!!if this is so it sure would have saved seven people alot of painand suffering. In the end when this accident is over the cost should be over $50,000 dollars. When putting heavy objects or items in rear of vehicle that weigh more than 200lbs, the suspension leaf spring would bottom out. Had talked to dealer & nothing done. Had put helper leaf spring, but not enough. Needs to have rear of vehicle redesigned. Front end is very light.

Drivers rear seatbelt retractor spring blew off of the belt. Also, without prior warning, rear spring leaf was defective.

Cannot get air throught vents in dash, all controls work properly vacuum actuator moves, there is vacuum at the swithc, no one knows the answerpaint on gas door bubbling and looks like it is going to fall offtransmission shifted hard into 2nd gear since we bought it( 54000kms) finally started to slip , bought used trans and had it installed, quoted 3000.00 to rebuild, dealer was past even belief.abs comes on when coming to a stop every time . Lf front sensor reads o mph when other sensors read movement causing it to assume a skid situation, replaced sensor at 205.00 no better, does not set code in computer according to mechanic. Pulled fuse.has had vibration in driveline since purchased no one can find anything sugeestion range from replace all u joints, did some of them no better to replace rear end. It is not possible in nova scotia to obtain a blasting permit to blow up your car even if you take precautions and hire a professional. I have never in 40 years of driving some bad stuff from old english cars to transport trucks with more miles than there are numbers, ever had this kind of problem, most things can be fixed. You have never lived until you have taken the whole dash apart on one of these, the vehicle was designed by madmen.

Security light kept coming on. Then car would not start, then took to dealer ,and the fuel pump had to be changed. One week later, vehicle would not start again , changed the sensor .two weeks later, vehicle would not start once again. Towed truck to dealer, and they took out the dash and replaced a switch.

Put vehichle in reverse in an attempt to back away from the building, and the vehicle accelerated again, travling in reverse across a busy road (thankfully no cars were coming) and struck a house with the rear of the vehicle.

Belt tensioner casing cracked/broken around mount bolt, causing loss of belt tension, power assisted steering, and power assisted braking. Throttle control pedal "sticks" and excessive pressure must be applied to overcome resistance. Brake pedal could not be depressed until excessive force was applied with both feet, occurred twice at very slow speeds while cresting a short steep incline and turning to the right to park, cause yet unknown.dt

Cruise control fails to disengage in neutral and reverse. Inadequate shift lever detent action results in inadvertant shifting into reverse. July 4, 2001:with cruise control engaged at 55 mph, operator mistakenly shifts from overdrive into neutral (thinking he is shifting from 3rd to overdrive). Engine begins to race when cruise control fails to disengage. While attempting to return to overdrive, operator shifts into lower gear due to inadequate detent action in shift lever. Engine races faster (cruise control still engaged). Operator shifts into reverse while attempting to locate overdrive due to inadequate detent action in shift lever. Cruise control remains engaged causing high speed reversal of drive wheels resulting in loss of vehicle control. Vehicle spins out and rolls on side. Gas pedal sticks at various speeds.at approximately 29,000 miles the gas pedal would stick when moving from a stopped position and when removing your foot from the gas pedal to slow down, when you press down to reaccelerate the gas pedal would stick. The vehicle was returned to capitol chevrolet on november 18,1999 with 29,000 miles.the correction at that time was to repair the air valve throttle and reset to specs.again at approximately 50,000 miles the gas pedal started sticking again - it was returned to capitol chevrolet - this time the correction was to remove the throttle body and clean carbon. The dealer alledged the air throttle valve is gumming up and should be cleaned out periodically to prevent the gas pedal from sticking.i reported the incident to general motors customer service (claim #c010486637) they concurred with the diagnosis of capitol chevrolet. However, neither general morors customer service or capitol chevrolet could specify at what intervals this service should be performed.my owners manual has no reference to any maintenance such as remove throttle body and clean carbon at any specific interval.i consider this a major safety problem and sincerely believe that it is possible the valve is defective.i was further told by the dealers service manager that the valve would stick again causing the gas pedal to stick but once again was not told at what intervals the valve should be cleaned to prevent the problem. Simply stated i was told to wait and see when the gas pedal stuck again.i was further informed that at this one dealership alone they are cleaning 4-10 vehicles a day with similar problems.

I own a 1998 chevrolet astro and the windshield wipers are not working properly. I have checked on the internet to see if there is any recall on this issue and found out that there is not. I have contacted a local chevrolet dealer and they told me that there is no recall for this issue. They also told me that it would cost about $140 to fix this issue. However, there is the recall for the same issue for the 1995 to 1997 models. Think the 1998 model should also be recalled by the manufacturer since the issue is obviously the same as the other model and i am sure that i am not the only one who has the same issue with the 1998 model.

There is apparently an ongoing problem with gm/chevrolet windshield wiper motor circuit board failure. The wipers have an intermittent problem that has left us several times in pouring rain only to have the wipers fail. There is an alldata recall notice# 98v15001 regarding chevy pickups and light trucks, but my local dealer refuses to deal with this for less than $200 of my money, and thats with an extended, so-called "gold coverage" warranty. What can i do?

My wife was driving our 1998 chevy astro van in a heavy rain in heavy traffic near washington d.c. Last week.she turned the wipers on.the wipers randomly worked and didn't worked and it almost caused a very serious accident.this random "work/doesn't work" even has started happening more frequently since about 4 months ago.in doing research on the web, apparently gm knows about this problem but will not accept responsibility for the circuit board problem.

Dt: the consumer stated that her windshield wipers fail intermittently.they came on when the consumer didn't need them, but when she needed them they wouldn't come on.this has happened in two astros that the consumer has owned. The first one was a 1995 chevy astro van and the second one is a 1998 astro van.the windshield wipers and motor to the wipers had to be replaced. The owner was told by a service technician that gm replaced the motor on the wipers on the models before the owners van. There is no recall on the 1998 vans. This has been a problem since 2003. The owner has not had this looked at by a technician.the owner stated that she usually she pulls over to the side of the road, pops the hood and taps on the windshield wiper motor to get the wiper to work, and most times this works.the consumer has not talked to the dealer but has talked with gm. The person at gm said that since there was no recall there is nothing that they can do. The owner just keeps tapping on the windshield wiper motor to correct this problem. The owner is taking her van in for recall work on the side mirror tomorrow.she is going to ask about the windshield wipers and show them the complaints that have been filed on the windshield wipers from the nhtsa.

Windshield wipers failed in the rain, making it difficult to see the road. Vehicle was taken for check up, and found that there was a recall 03v159000 for the 1997 year, make, and model.. Circuit board on windshield wiper failed-same part and probably w/recalled vehicles. New one cost $54.00. Why was recall not extended to all vehicles with this defective circuit board.

I have owned 3 chevy astro vans.1995/2001/1998/in the 1995 and in the one i have now 1998 the windshield wipers fail to work.they come on when there is no rain and don't come on when it rains.i spoke to a service man and he told me that many of the astro vans have that problem.a delay in winshield wipers
