Vehicle was involved in a head-on collsion at 55 mph. Upon impact, both air bags did not deploy. Manufacturer was e-mailed..consumer was informed by chevrolet dealership that unless the vehicle is hit just right the airbags will not deploy.

This vehicle has an electrical problem that causes the whole electricale system to shut down, including headslights/signal lights/speedometer/windows/locks, and the brake lights. Dealer has been contacted.
I have a 1997 astro, in the past 8 months the driver side window motor, windshield wiper motor and transmission have all been replaced.the transmission was replaced with 54,202 miles on it, which started giving us problems at about 53,000 miles.the dealership replaced both idler arms at 25,680 miles.had seat belt chime fixed (recall), driver seat feels loose when stopping dealership claims to have tightened it, still feels loose.the van has always idled rough took it in 3 times for that and can't seem to fix that.sliding door rattle they tried to fix that also still rattles.the gas pedal sticks when i take off or when i go in reverse which makes it impossible to take off smoothly.i had an astro and a safari in the past and never had as many problems as i had with this one.
Power window on passenger side has failed.vehicle has been through 2 new batteries since we purchased it 6 months ago.seems to be draining batteries and we are not sure why.we put battery on recharger overnight, but within hours of taking itoff the charger, the battery is drained while the car is not running.

1997 chevrolet astrovan with electrical door locks.pulled into sheetz gas and go and went to open the drivers door and it did not open. Tried to push the manual inside door lock but it was totallyfrozen and would not actuate. Next tried electrical door lock switch. No response on drivers door but there was weak sound from passenger door lock solenoid. It was as if on the passenger side it was suffering from insufficient voltage. Crawled out of passenger seat and got out of car. 'took ignition key and inserted it into drivers doorlock. Key would turn to lock(felt the detent of the )and back to neutral... Key would not turn to unlock position ...would move a little and then freeze.i did not try harder to turn as i felt there was a very good chance the key would break and leave me stranded 40 miles from home... No backup ignition key.ignition key works the door locks in this model.went to ntstb web site and searched for other people with same type problem. No luck.went to google and did same search chevrolet astrovan door won't open and got a number of complaints that had not reached ntstb.. Chevrolet has to know about this problem.if this model has flip up steering wheel, this would not be the problem it is. It is very difficult for older and larger problem to climb out of the bucket seat as the steering wheel traps your legs whereas a bench seat you simply slide sideways. This is an entrapmentissue!!!!!!will see dealer in hour.
The contact owns a 1997 chevrolet astro van. While driving at speeds of 30 mph, the vehicle lost power and stalled. The contact stated the odometer and other unknown lights on the dashboard failed. The vehicle was diagnosed by an independent mechanic and advised the contact there was a computer failure in the vehicle. The vehicle was diagnosed by two additional mechanics which advised the contact of the same failure. The contact had not informed the dealer or the manufacturer. The vin was not available. I have had a number of problems with this vehicle: both the left and right power windor motors; replace the key remote, both idler arms,front brake pad at 37,000 miles, serpentime belt, power steering pump - replaced twice, had to fix oil cooler lines twice, replaced distributor/rotor; replaced lower gasket due to intake manifold leak, and fuel pump modual. All of this was done before my car had 57,000 miles.the dealer has been very fair and repaired at low or now cost. I have had two trips shortened due to breakdowns and have spent over $1,500 on repairs not covered under warrenty or by the dealer. This is in addition to normal maintenance (oil and filter,four new tires,and transmission fluid and filter). I am concerned as to "what is next" and when the dealer when no longer be able to fix these problems at low cost to me.

Engine checklight coming on coincidently with very rough shifting.dealer states transmission needs replacement, even though an independent transmission shop could find no problem with the transmission.the independent mechanic maintains the problem is in the computer, which is shutting down and causing a full line pressure in the transmission, causing the rough shift.the independent shop dropped the transmission pan, inspected the fluid and visually inspected the transmission.also kept and drove the vehicle for 2 days.dealership insists the computer code they are receiving (p1870) indicates a transmission slip, to be remedied by a complete transmission replacement or at least an overhaul. No visual inspection of the transmission was conducted by the dealer -- only relying on a computer code to diagnose the problem. Dealer also stated they have had to replace many transmissions on this model vehicle --- "more than we care to admit."still, an independent shop can find no internal problem and maintains it is a problem in the pcm.dealer does not want to change pcm and will diagnose only as far as "pulling codes" from the pcm.they cannot adequately explain why the problem is intermittent and only presents intelf under certain weather conditions.when rough shifting occurs, the problem immediately goes away when the engine is shut off and re-started.

Was driving and the engine started to miss,and would not pull it's self down the hwy. Then engine stalled, and would not restart. Its was towed to a local chevy dealer,which is 350 miles from my house. Where the problem was determined. The electrical systam was contaminated with fuel. The mechanic poured raw gas from ecm. Apparently fuel is being pumped through the wires that fire the injector to the ecm. The dealer don johnson motors of rice lake ws, had never seen anything like this before. My local chevy dealer sheppard chevrolet of lake bluff il has had another 4.3 in a truck do the same thing. Gm warrented that. But i'm over my standard warrenty and the best they say they can do is 50/50 on the cost,which i think is unfair. They should cover this, as far as im concered this is a safety issue. One spark while i was driving and it could have caught on fire. Don johnson motors had contacted gm technocial assist. When the problem was determined and asked for help. Gm says they have found this problem before but wouldnt give specifics. In reviewing other complaints on the nhtsa web page, others have had injector problems with these vans, but their descriptions are incomplete.

Dash cluster failed.
The module and harness melted.probably would have started a fire had not we been there and disconnected the battery.the vehicle was off and had been for at least 20 minutes.just thought someone should check to be sure this is an isolated incident.
Auxiliaryair conditionr(a/c) rear switch failed/ melted/ smoked.this was the second time in 4 years. Went to the junk yard, and found thet 5 of 5 astro vans with this type switch also were melted/burned. No appearent defect with rear blower motor that would pull excessive amps.

Coolant line rubbed up against the engine block and wore a hole in it.the new line has been redesigned to avoid the contact. The windshield wipers intermittently stops and has happened at least 15 times. The fuel gauge stopped working, reads full for 20 minutes then slowly comes down, dealer replaced the tank gauge

Consumer was driving at 35 mph when he smelled smoke, and pulled over to exit.the doors and windows would not open. Consumer hit the glass with his shoulder and hand to get out, but then he had to break the glass to exit. Notice light coming from the tires on the driver's side, and then saw that the vehicle was on fire.fire department came out to put out the fire. Contacted the dealer to fix the vehicle.
Every thousand miles, service light comes on and vehicle runs very rough,jets have been cleaned 4 times on the engine. Dealer was blaming it on chevron gas. Chevron has sent a letter stating it was the poppet valve.delaer changed all 6 poppet valves and cleaned the fuel intake system,and it worked for 5 months.problem has come up again.

Engine valve seal failed causing valves to stick which resulted in excessive engine noise.
My problem is that i have a 1997 chevrolet astro van with 63,005 miles on it and the main bearings failed. I took it my local dealer for a oil pressure drop, and they informed me thatthe bearings were bad. After some investigating on the internet i have found that chevrolet may have been aware of a problem with the bearings, having issued a tsb[87-61-22]. Now that a new engine has been installedat my cost of $4600, i am looking for some help or information on how to recoup some or all of the cost. I have had all possible maintenance done and all recall work done since 1997. Chevrolet has informed me that some recall work was not done, but my dealer records show it has been done.
In oct. 1997 when starting to drive transmission slips, feels like van has been hit from behind. Dealer replaced valve body,due to a known product problem.van once again had same troble in may 2000, dealer changed valve body, also statede becaused of a known product concern. But tjis time i had to pay $672.06. Their customer service was of no help. Even though their mechanic stated that gm had said to reploace the valve body the second time with a new design, since the first replacement was defective.

Occurance 1) engine stopped without warning while approcahing an intersection. The resulting loss of power caused a severe control problem with the van. The reason for the failure was the fuel guage read 3/4 and the van ran out of fuel.occurance 2) the fuel guage has totally stopped functioning, after topping off and proceeding onto highway i drove for 1/2 hour at 65, a sudden slam occured 2 or three times, appeared to be the engine cutting in and out, slowed to 55 and continued for 150 miles without further incident. Occurance 3) vehicle has no fuel guage, i am told it's out of warranty, even if full the vehicle seem to loose control momentarally, as if to loose power.
Fast engine idle, intermittant, high ambient temp. No "chk eng" or "stored codes" van will intermittantly accellerate to 45 to 62 mph with no pedal. Several near accidents. Frequently must use brakes or low gear to hold 45-55 mph dealers make excuse over warranty while admiting it is a safety problem, but no real interest from several levels of mgmt. 3 yr problem, dealer serv has only seen malfunction once with computer tool pluged in but said "no problem indicated" while seeing the fast idle.can i get an incident number to take to the dealer?
Wife was driving when vehicle caught on fire. Was told of this by a passing motorist- driver was traveling about 75mph.

Chevrolet doesn't care about using cheap parts- after warranty they say trade it in .numerous things wrong with van and have talked to chevrolet many times. Can't use back door of van, run out of gas, knobs fall of interior devices, asked chevy to help since 37,000 and problems still happening as i go, can't afford to fix and can't afford to trade. Another nice shove it job by chevrolet they don't stand by their prduct and their product is not safe please respond.

Consumer complains that with the daytime running lights, driver of vehicle forgets to turn regular headlights on, thus the vehicle has no tail lights.
My wife was driving our 97 chevy astro van about 40mph when she attempted to stop. The van was not stopping so she pushed the brake pedal as hard as she could. Just as it was about to stop at the stop sign it lurched forward into the intersection. The van continued through the intersection at a high rate of speed (luckily there was no other cars coming). She tried to stop again now noticing that the engine was racing. She turned off the car and put it into park. We then had the van towed to the dealer we bought it at. They looked at it and said the fuel pressure regulator went out and was pouring raw fuel into the motor. It was occuring at such a high rate that it sucked a part of the throttle body into the motor. We still don't have our van back or do we know the extent of the damages (they have to pull the heads off to find the part that got sucked in).i am glad i am writing this just worrying about a few thousand dollars i am out and not telling you how my wife and two kids were killed. I calld general motors to complain and they made a case (#1-73278300) and said that if they got enough complaints this could turn into a recall at which time they would reimburse us. The service manager at the dealer said he has seen cases in which parts were sucke into the engine 3 or 4 times. My question is how many people need to get hurt or killed for gm to think this is a safety problem? my family got lucky in that they were just on a residential street, but as you can see it could have been much worse. Also i don't think i should have to be liable for my whole engine being in jeopardy from one relatively cheap part going bad. I am compaining about a potential deadly problem that i feel is a design flaw. How many others have experienced the same as my family or worse? how many people have to die for gm to recognise this serious problem?

This is in addition to normal maintenance (oil and filter,four new tires,and transmission fluid and filter). I am concerned as to "what is next" and when the dealer when no longer be able to fix these problems at low cost to me.

My mini van always starts shaking when brakes are applied i went through six time fixing problem , i put new discs drums shoe pads shocks alignment rebalance everything we could do i'am very disaapointed at chevrolet for their vehicle performance i even put a new gear box, the fuel gage does'nt work they told at croppers chevrolet in nogales az.i need to replace the fuel pump they could not fix the gagei am so dissapointed i bought a toyota and as soon as i can i'll trade this vehicle . Upon removal of defective fuel pump assy contained within the gas tank the fuel pump ground wire had melted and shorted to the positive lead to the fuel gauge sender.it seems to me that if the wiring inside the gas tank is not housed in sometype of protective assy to prevent such failures it would not only be a faulty design but pose a very serious safety issue.fortunately excessive heat or sparks did not occur due to this failure.had there been enough heat or sparking from the shorted wiring, most likely there would have been a resulting fire and/or explosion. I am also concerned on how such failures resulting in a fire and/or explosion could ever be determined since the evidence of poor design would most likely be destroyed by fire and/or explosion.have there been many unexplained fires or explosions on this model vehicle?i do hope someone will contact me on this issue!

Occurance 1) engine stopped without warning while approcahing an intersection. The resulting loss of power caused a severe control problem with the van. The reason for the failure was the fuel guage read 3/4 and the van ran out of fuel.occurance 2) the fuel guage has totally stopped functioning, after topping off and proceeding onto highway i drove for 1/2 hour at 65, a sudden slam occured 2 or three times, appeared to be the engine cutting in and out, slowed to 55 and continued for 150 miles without further incident. Occurance 3) vehicle has no fuel guage, i am told it's out of warranty, even if full the vehicle seem to loose control momentarally, as if to loose power.
You do not realize gauge does not work because it acts as if it does. If you run out of gas you will have no power brakes or steering.

Fuel gauge reads full all the time.i realize that it is not as important as other things.this happened about 3 months after the warrenty ran out.this is a common problem with gm vechicals and not with just the astro vans.when i called the dealerthey said that people normaly just use there trip odometer.the reason i was given was that it was a $500 fix.i know 5 other people that have or had this same problem.most just get by until they get rid of the vechical.

1997 chevrolet astrovan with electrical door locks.pulled into sheetz gas and go and went to open the drivers door and it did not open. Tried to push the manual inside door lock but it was totallyfrozen and would not actuate. Next tried electrical door lock switch. No response on drivers door but there was weak sound from passenger door lock solenoid. It was as if on the passenger side it was suffering from insufficient voltage. Crawled out of passenger seat and got out of car. 'took ignition key and inserted it into drivers doorlock. Key would turn to lock(felt the detent of the )and back to neutral... Key would not turn to unlock position ...would move a little and then freeze.i did not try harder to turn as i felt there was a very good chance the key would break and leave me stranded 40 miles from home... No backup ignition key.ignition key works the door locks in this model.went to ntstb web site and searched for other people with same type problem. No luck.went to google and did same search chevrolet astrovan door won't open and got a number of complaints that had not reached ntstb.. Chevrolet has to know about this problem.if this model has flip up steering wheel, this would not be the problem it is. It is very difficult for older and larger problem to climb out of the bucket seat as the steering wheel traps your legs whereas a bench seat you simply slide sideways. This is an entrapmentissue!!!!!!will see dealer in hour.

In oct. 1997 when starting to drive transmission slips, feels like van has been hit from behind. Dealer replaced valve body,due to a known product problem.van once again had same troble in may 2000, dealer changed valve body, also statede becaused of a known product concern. But tjis time i had to pay $672.06. Their customer service was of no help. Even though their mechanic stated that gm had said to reploace the valve body the second time with a new design, since the first replacement was defective.

After driving for 20-40 minutes, the transmission will shift very hard from first to second gear.we have reported this to the dealer and am told that it would cost $1800.00 + to replace the transmission.we have had 3 transmission shops look at this problem and run diagnostics and tune up on the transmission.the problem still exists.we have been dealing with this aggravating situation the last two years, spoken with many people in the repair business and no one seems to be able to pinpoint the exact problem.they only want to "look" at the problem and collect more money, which we have done on 3 seperate occasions.all to no avail.problem still exists.

I have a 1997 astro, in the past 8 months the driver side window motor, windshield wiper motor and transmission have all been replaced.the transmission was replaced with 54,202 miles on it, which started giving us problems at about 53,000 miles.the dealership replaced both idler arms at 25,680 miles.had seat belt chime fixed (recall), driver seat feels loose when stopping dealership claims to have tightened it, still feels loose.the van has always idled rough took it in 3 times for that and can't seem to fix that.sliding door rattle they tried to fix that also still rattles.the gas pedal sticks when i take off or when i go in reverse which makes it impossible to take off smoothly.i had an astro and a safari in the past and never had as many problems as i had with this one.

After driving on interstate for awhile, the transmission shifted very harshly when pulling away from a toll booth sending my wife's and children's heads back sharply against their seats. The dealer says it will need to be rebuilt. Independent transmission shops state that this is a common problem with gmc transmissions and that it will eventually cease to function, possibly stranding the people in the van. After acknowledging this in several service bulletins, the gm garage still says that gm is not responsible for the repair cost of approx $2000.
Engine checklight coming on coincidently with very rough shifting.dealer states transmission needs replacement, even though an independent transmission shop could find no problem with the transmission.the independent mechanic maintains the problem is in the computer, which is shutting down and causing a full line pressure in the transmission, causing the rough shift.the independent shop dropped the transmission pan, inspected the fluid and visually inspected the transmission.also kept and drove the vehicle for 2 days.dealership insists the computer code they are receiving (p1870) indicates a transmission slip, to be remedied by a complete transmission replacement or at least an overhaul. No visual inspection of the transmission was conducted by the dealer -- only relying on a computer code to diagnose the problem. Dealer also stated they have had to replace many transmissions on this model vehicle --- "more than we care to admit."still, an independent shop can find no internal problem and maintains it is a problem in the pcm.dealer does not want to change pcm and will diagnose only as far as "pulling codes" from the pcm.they cannot adequately explain why the problem is intermittent and only presents intelf under certain weather conditions.when rough shifting occurs, the problem immediately goes away when the engine is shut off and re-started.

My feeling on this vehicle is as follows: this is a relitively new astro van, being only 4 years old, i wouldn't have expected to have to absorb the cost of a rebuilt trasmission already. After speaking with our trasmissions specialist, he advised we contact someone regarding this van. The problem with the trasmission was caused by 2 torque bearings that exploded within the transmission, thus causing the damage. He let me know that this is not a normal occurance in this vehicle, there had to be a flaw. Torque bearings just do not "explode."the cost to remedy, what i feel is a manufacture defect, has caused a hardship for my family. I would appreciate any helpwith this matter.

My feeling on this vehicle is as follows: this is a relitively new astro van, being only 4 years old, i wouldn't have expected to have to absorb the cost of a rebuilt trasmission already. After speaking with our trasmissions specialist, he advised we contact someone regarding this van. The problem with the trasmission was caused by 2 torque bearings that exploded within the transmission, thus causing the damage. He let me know that this is not a normal occurance in this vehicle, there had to be a flaw. Torque bearings just do not "explode."the cost to remedy, what i feel is a manufacture defect, has caused a hardship for my family. I would appreciate any helpwith this matter.

Chevrolet doesn't care about using cheap parts- after warranty they say trade it in .numerous things wrong with van and have talked to chevrolet many times. Can't use back door of van, run out of gas, knobs fall of interior devices, asked chevy to help since 37,000 and problems still happening as i go, can't afford to fix and can't afford to trade. Another nice shove it job by chevrolet they don't stand by their prduct and their product is not safe please respond.

I own a 1997 chevy astro van custom. The rear seatbelts do not work in the back benchseat. They haven't worked since we bought the vehicle we have fought and fought to get this issue fixed. The go in with a screwdriver and pop it and say it's ok. It"s not ok> kids sit back there. Or at least they are supposed to. I can't allow anyone to use those seats. I am afraid to get some from the junkyard and for 30,000. I should have working seatbelts.

Vehicle involved 1997 chevrolet astro1.seat recliner was being used when the handle broke off.the seat remained in the position established when the handle broke.started driving the van and suddenly the seat back went completely flat.the driver was able to hang on to the steering wheel and maintain control of the vehicle although the vehicle did wander into the left lane during the incident.2.i investigated the failure and found the plastic handle was intact, however the metal pivot piece that engages the serrated locking plate failed.this pivot piece also contains the torsion spring that locks the plate when the handle is not being actuated.the design is not intrinsicly safe in that the locking plate is pushed upward by the spring to secure the seat.as long as there is pressure on the seat the mechanism will stay engaged.without a load on the seat, the locking plate can drop free due to gravity and the seat will recline backward to the full flat position.examination of the pivot piece appears to show a crack started where the spring is secured and the crack propogated through the piece due to fatique and vibration until failure occurred.3.the seat was locked into a permanent position using high strength fasteners and existing holes in the seat frame.additionally, the locking plate was engaged and also pinned into place to further secure the seat.the reclining feature of the seat is no longer functional.i retained the broken adjustment handle with pivot piece.

There was a moaning soundfrom under the hood on the driver's side and the van drifted into the crosswalk ( lost braking ).i threw it into reverse to stop.after replacing the brake master cylinder, hydro booster, power steering pump and gear and hoses, the problem persisted. I finally found someone with the sameproblem on an on-line forum who suggested disabling the abs by pulling the fuse. Problem immediately went away when anti -lock brake was disabled.

The contact owns a 1997 chevrolet astro minivan. The contact was driving at very low speeds when the anti brake system failed, causing increased stopping distances during low-speed brake applications. The contact stated that the failure was similar to nhtsa campaign number id: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: antilock) but the contact was advised by the dealer that his vehicle as not included in the recall. The manufacturer was not contacted and the vehicle was not repaired. The vin was not available. The current and failure mileage was approximately 346,000.
Vehicle developed a random pull while braking, particularly in rain or snow & slush. In the beginning it was only the first time you applied the brakes after you drove 2 or 3 miles then it happened on dry pavement. It happens only occasionally, but can be very severe, it nearly pulled me into the guide rail on one occasion. This started around 12000 miles and it now has 46000 miles on it. The dealer has replaced pads, turned rotors, aligned the front end twice, and ground the clearance on the calipers twice. At gm denied having more complaints aboutthis but i have heard of other paople with the problem. I was called by the dealer the other day to bring it in again to lower the front end and another alignment. I recently took it on a trip in which my brother inlaw drove it and asked me "have you noticed this thing pulling?" my wife also drives it and has complained to me. This vehicle has a problem , and i suspect there are others! i had a 1992 astro awd but never had the problem. A friend of mine traded her astro awd off because it had a similar problem, but pulled to the left, into oncoming traffic. I 've been lucky so far, but it could easily cause an accident because on some of the severe incidents it has pulled me off the edge of the road.

I am writing this letter because chevrolet and general motors are producing vehicles that have mechanical defects that are life threatening and are covering up the problem.the basic problem is with the brakes of the chevrolet astro van.shortly after i purchased the van i noticed the van began pulling or steering off to the left upon braking. It was very slight at first but as time went on the problem became more acute. I took the van into the dealer for service because of the pulling when breaking problem.(little did i know then that this would be a long succession of visits for the same problem.)when i explained the problem with the van pulling when breaking, one of the writers behind the desk stated that those vans have a history of pulling and there were a lot of things they could do to elevate the problem.since then i have had the van in at least 7 times (confirmed dealer receipts) for the pulling problem.the reason i am not completely sure is because the dealer did not always include the pulling problem as one of the problems they worked on.the dealer kept reassuring me that there were additional tech notices they could employ to fix the problem.however, the last time i took the van in for the problem they told me the did all they could do.i then called the gm customer support line to report the problem.the person in turn then called the dealer to verify the problem.the dealer did verify the problem but then told the person on the customer support line that it was the customers bad driving habits that were causing the problem.now i am 54 years old and have been driving since i was 16 and never encountered this type of a problem.the last van i had just before for this one was a ford aerostar which is a very similar type van and i never experienced this type of a problem.the gm customer service line then told me that as far as they were concerned it was my fault that the van was pulling when i was breaking.they also stated that

My mini van always starts shaking when brakes are applied i went through six time fixing problem , i put new discs drums shoe pads shocks alignment rebalance everything we could do i'am very disaapointed at chevrolet for their vehicle performance i even put a new gear box, the fuel gage does'nt work they told at croppers chevrolet in nogales az.i need to replace the fuel pump they could not fix the gagei am so dissapointed i bought a toyota and as soon as i can i'll trade this vehicle . One thing i learned is go with an import vehicle.
Upon ma state inspection the 2 front idler arms were found to be completely gone "typical of blazers and astros" they said. Independant garage found that the arms were extremely worn for this milage. Also the front disk rotors are worn past the point of safty, and a deteration of the cooling and support fins is noted, this seems odd as the rotor pads show typical and even wear for the milage. The rotors are evenly worn, but excessivly deep cut. At 15000 miles the pedal went completely to the floor at a stop sign, ok on second pump, never occured again. I have heard of this and i am always cautious. Breaks sometimes act oddly but work ok. I still feel great about chev vans though my arm rest fell off ?

Brakes didn't"fail" as much as they wore out, what i considered to be "prematurely".vehicle had about 26000 miles when chatter started, indicating replacement needed.vehicle driven almost exclusively on freeway in mostly rural area (blythe, ca.)dealer stated i received almost twice the normal mileage as most astrovan owners, about 18,000 miles.front disc pads on my 1990 jeep cherokee last over 60,000 miles per set, ie current mileage- 189,000 on originals and two sets of replacements.near identical driving.
I have had a number of problems with this vehicle: both the left and right power windor motors; replace the key remote, both idler arms,front brake pad at 37,000 miles, serpentime belt, power steering pump - replaced twice, had to fix oil cooler lines twice, replaced distributor/rotor; replaced lower gasket due to intake manifold leak, and fuel pump modual. All of this was done before my car had 57,000 miles.the dealer has been very fair and repaired at low or now cost. I have had two trips shortened due to breakdowns and have spent over $1,500 on repairs not covered under warrenty or by the dealer. This is in addition to normal maintenance (oil and filter,four new tires,and transmission fluid and filter). I am concerned as to "what is next" and when the dealer when no longer be able to fix these problems at low cost to me.

The rubber brake cover slipped off the brake while consumer was depressing it causing consumer foot to hit the gas pedal, lurch forward and hit the vehicle in front of him. *nlm

The pedal positions and drivers foot room on my 1997 chevrolet astro contributed to an accident. I was turning left into a driveway which i could see was iced over. I was driving less than 5 mph and braking when i entered the driveway and felt the anti-lock brakes begin to function. The brake pedal immediately dropped down and the van no longer decelerated. In fact the van accelerated the harder i stood on the brake pedal at which point i realized my right foot was pressing the accelerator as well as the brake. As i tried to move my right foot further left my size 12 right shoe got tangled with my size 12 left shoe in the drivers foot well. By the time i correctly positioned my feet and was able to press exclusively on the very small brake pedal the van crashed into the garage, penetrating the door and coming to a stop as it met the resistance of the vehicle parked in the garage. It happened so fast at first i felt like an idiot for having an accident until i analyzed the chain of events.i discovered the way i normally position my feet, out stretched in the foot well is unsafe. I noticed when i apply the brake with the ball of my right foot during normal stops the overall width of my shoe hovers over the accelerator pedal. This is normally of no consequence because the brake pedal hits bottom above the height of where the accelerator pedal rests during non-abs stops. However when the pedal drops down during abs assist the foot room is too tight. This requires me to rest my left foot leg bent on the left wheel well. Although this is uncomfortable for me i believe i will need to drive this way for safety purposes. Short of gm reengineering this poor design, adult men need to be made aware of this potential while driving these vans. There are a lot of astros and gmc safaris on the road. I can't believe i am the only person who has had this problem.

I own a 1997 chevy astro van with 151k miles. Sunday, the power steering pump went out. When it did so, the brakes turned mushy with little braking power. We were lucky as we had just come down a steep driveway. If they had failed then our choices would have been to run into the back of a car if we could have turned, run into a group of people and then continued down a steep hill into brush and forest with likely casualties. Luckily, we had just started up to leave and noticed the problem. We shut down and the local chevy dealership was able to obtain a part. However, the service writer told us that to this day, many chevy vans and trucks have the same system where the power steering pump acts as a booster pump for the braking system. That lack of independence between the two systems is an engineering error and should be corrected.

Occurance 1) engine stopped without warning while approcahing an intersection. The resulting loss of power caused a severe control problem with the van. The reason for the failure was the fuel guage read 3/4 and the van ran out of fuel.occurance 2) the fuel guage has totally stopped functioning, after topping off and proceeding onto highway i drove for 1/2 hour at 65, a sudden slam occured 2 or three times, appeared to be the engine cutting in and out, slowed to 55 and continued for 150 miles without further incident. Occurance 3) vehicle has no fuel guage, i am told it's out of warranty, even if full the vehicle seem to loose control momentarally, as if to loose power.

Brakes and steering failed simultaneously, resulting in a crash. Gmc knows about the problem and will not fix it until enough people die. My family was almost killed. Anyone who has had a family member hurt or killed in a gm van should sue gmc.

Power steering pump main shaft failed causing loss of control
Upon ma state inspection the 2 front idler arms were found to be completely gone "typical of blazers and astros" they said. Independant garage found that the arms were extremely worn for this milage. Also the front disk rotors are worn past the point of safty, and a deteration of the cooling and support fins is noted, this seems odd as the rotor pads show typical and even wear for the milage. The rotors are evenly worn, but excessivly deep cut. At 15000 miles the pedal went completely to the floor at a stop sign, ok on second pump, never occured again. I have heard of this and i am always cautious. Breaks sometimes act oddly but work ok. I still feel great about chev vans though my arm rest fell off ?
I have a 1997 astro, in the past 8 months the driver side window motor, windshield wiper motor and transmission have all been replaced.the transmission was replaced with 54,202 miles on it, which started giving us problems at about 53,000 miles.the dealership replaced both idler arms at 25,680 miles.had seat belt chime fixed (recall), driver seat feels loose when stopping dealership claims to have tightened it, still feels loose.the van has always idled rough took it in 3 times for that and can't seem to fix that.sliding door rattle they tried to fix that also still rattles.the gas pedal sticks when i take off or when i go in reverse which makes it impossible to take off smoothly.i had an astro and a safari in the past and never had as many problems as i had with this one.

Paint is peeling and cracking on my 1997 chevrolet astro.while under warrenty the roof was repainted. Soon it started to crack but dealer would not help.as a owner of several gm vehicles i feel my van should be repainted for free since this is a known defect of gm.all i am asking for is for gm to pay to have my van fully repainted.thank you and look forward to hearing from you.anthony o. The contact owns a 1997 chevrolet astro.while changing one of the tires the contact noticed that the cable which holds the spare tire underneath the vehicle was severely corroded.while the contact was performing his owns repair to replace the cable, it fractured. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The failure mileage was 140,000 and the current mileage was 153,000.the vin was unavailable.
1997 chevrolet astrovan with electrical door locks.pulled into sheetz gas and go and went to open the drivers door and it did not open. Tried to push the manual inside door lock but it was totallyfrozen and would not actuate. Next tried electrical door lock switch. No response on drivers door but there was weak sound from passenger door lock solenoid. It was as if on the passenger side it was suffering from insufficient voltage. Crawled out of passenger seat and got out of car. 'took ignition key and inserted it into drivers doorlock. Key would turn to lock(felt the detent of the )and back to neutral... Key would not turn to unlock position ...would move a little and then freeze.i did not try harder to turn as i felt there was a very good chance the key would break and leave me stranded 40 miles from home... No backup ignition key.ignition key works the door locks in this model.went to ntstb web site and searched for other people with same type problem. No luck.went to google and did same search chevrolet astrovan door won't open and got a number of complaints that had not reached ntstb.. Chevrolet has to know about this problem.if this model has flip up steering wheel, this would not be the problem it is. It is very difficult for older and larger problem to climb out of the bucket seat as the steering wheel traps your legs whereas a bench seat you simply slide sideways. This is an entrapmentissue!!!!!!will see dealer in hour.

Chevrolet doesn't care about using cheap parts- after warranty they say trade it in .numerous things wrong with van and have talked to chevrolet many times. Can't use back door of van, run out of gas, knobs fall of interior devices, asked chevy to help since 37,000 and problems still happening as i go, can't afford to fix and can't afford to trade. Another nice shove it job by chevrolet they don't stand by their prduct and their product is not safe please respond.

Passenger side sliding door failed.
Everytime the sliding door is opened it falls off the track. Dealer has tried to correct this problem six times over the last 2 years. Please provide any further information.
The gas indicator fails to register the correct fuel left in vehicle.owner ran out of gas due to defective indicator.the door hinges on the dutch doors allow doors to swing wide. Took vehicle to mechanic to repair hinges, but the fuel indicator could not be fixed. *ml

Cracks developed in the frame hoilding the side door which started rattling and if unchecked could have resulted in the loss of a door in traffic.chevrolet dealer that sold this vehicle new and has maintained it for 60,000 miles of warranty says this is not covered under sorkmanship or poor engineering.this is a safety hazard since the door weighs approx 100 pounds and the loos of it on a highway at high speed could be extremely dangerous.

Front end shakes and vibrates when going 50 mph and faster
Vehicle has a "stop bump" or "drive line clunk" which is "corrected" by lubricating driveline slip yok and driveshaft every 2000 miles.this occurs when stopping and feels as if the car has been bumped from behind, causing it to lurch slightly forward.i've been told that it is not normal operation but can not be fixed.also the alignment needs to be corrected every two months as it continually pulls to the right (an independent shop said the idler arms are bad).there are many squeaks, bumps and clunks coming from under the vehicle.
Vehicle developed a random pull while braking, particularly in rain or snow & slush. In the beginning it was only the first time you applied the brakes after you drove 2 or 3 miles then it happened on dry pavement. It happens only occasionally, but can be very severe, it nearly pulled me into the guide rail on one occasion. This started around 12000 miles and it now has 46000 miles on it. The dealer has replaced pads, turned rotors, aligned the front end twice, and ground the clearance on the calipers twice. At gm denied having more complaints aboutthis but i have heard of other paople with the problem. I was called by the dealer the other day to bring it in again to lower the front end and another alignment. I recently took it on a trip in which my brother inlaw drove it and asked me "have you noticed this thing pulling?" my wife also drives it and has complained to me. This vehicle has a problem , and i suspect there are others! i had a 1992 astro awd but never had the problem. A friend of mine traded her astro awd off because it had a similar problem, but pulled to the left, into oncoming traffic. I 've been lucky so far, but it could easily cause an accident because on some of the severe incidents it has pulled me off the edge of the road.

One thing i learned is go with an import vehicle.

I have had a number of problems with this vehicle: both the left and right power windor motors; replace the key remote, both idler arms,front brake pad at 37,000 miles, serpentime belt, power steering pump - replaced twice, had to fix oil cooler lines twice, replaced distributor/rotor; replaced lower gasket due to intake manifold leak, and fuel pump modual. All of this was done before my car had 57,000 miles.the dealer has been very fair and repaired at low or now cost. I have had two trips shortened due to breakdowns and have spent over $1,500 on repairs not covered under warrenty or by the dealer. This is in addition to normal maintenance (oil and filter,four new tires,and transmission fluid and filter). I am concerned as to "what is next" and when the dealer when no longer be able to fix these problems at low cost to me.

Dt: owner took the dealer, ann davids was the manager, the dealer denies any problem. The first day, owner notices a dust under hood, then noticed the wires were burnt underhood and under car.took car back to dealer, and everything was apparently okay. Owner tried cruise control to check the vehicle, when cruise control was on, vehilce accelerated unintentionally, then owner pulled off and put the car in neutral. When in neutral, the vehilce started to rev. Then a big bang, and smoke was coming out of the exausht. After vehicle cooled, he shut off the cruise control, and checked the accelerator, then started the car again. The accelerator stuck again, when this happened, the driver would put it neutral. Car was taken by tow truck to the dealership. The manager reports all if fixed, but no cruise control. 450 dollars for new cruise control.

No visual inspection of the transmission was conducted by the dealer -- only relying on a computer code to diagnose the problem. Dealer also stated they have had to replace many transmissions on this model vehicle --- "more than we care to admit."still, an independent shop can find no internal problem and maintains it is a problem in the pcm.dealer does not want to change pcm and will diagnose only as far as "pulling codes" from the pcm.they cannot adequately explain why the problem is intermittent and only presents intelf under certain weather conditions.when rough shifting occurs, the problem immediately goes away when the engine is shut off and re-started.

The line that runs from the accumulator and connects to the rear evaporator, compression suction, discharge junction block and condenser sits against the bell housing of the transmission. Due to vibration it has worn a hole in the line causing the refrigerant to leak at a rapid rate. It appears to be a design flaw. I have had a mechanic and a heating/cooling system technician look at it with the same results. It is an ongoing process of charging the system every 3 to 4 days which is time consuming and expensive. *nlm

It requires brakes to maintain 50mph on flat ground when the intermittent problem kicks in. I have had 3 years of dealer excuses, as they do not want to spend the money to fix even under extended 100.000 mile waranty. My wife and daughter were in the vehicle. My wife was driving. Suddenly, the accelerator stuck in an open position. Close to home and uncertain what to do, my wife was able to get in our driveway at home. The new rear brakes installed a week before were ruined. I had mechanic replace them and a rear brake cylinder also. The stress apparently caused the cylinder to start leaking. My mechanic also investigated the throttle problem. A factory wiring harness strap had broken and flipped around into the throttle linkage. Fortunately, no one was injured. We live in a rural area and traffic was not very heavy. My engine on the other hand is not so fortunate. It seems that it ran at too high an rpm for too long. It has developed a severe engine knock. Gm does not seem very interested in hearing about my safety concerns and appeal for repair compensation.
Accelerator pedal sticking if ignition is on or off due to failed throttle body unit.
Hasn't been anything more than a nuisiance so far, but we believe it could be a safety issue.the gas pedal sticks, especially right after starting the engine.starting off in a controllable manner is almost impossible. Reliable chevrolet in tulsa replaced the throttle body assembly once under warranty at about 40,000 miles, and now the problem is starting again. As the problem gets worse, it starts to happen more often, i.e. Even after the van has been running for a while instead of just after starting. The gas pedal just sticks when the throttle is closed. It takes quite a bit of pressure to unstick it, and when it finally moves, it opens the throttle more than intended, and the van starts off in leaps and spurts instead of gradually and gracefully.
The vehicle has a problem with developing a condition where the throttle pedal sticks.high pedal effort is required to over come this condition but this practice is unsafe because the result is a rapid acceleration or lurch when the pedal becomes unstuck .problem is chronic as it has to be addressed at least annually by cleaning the internals of throttle body.the cleaning is successful in removing the problem initially, but the condition always recurs after about a year (10,000 miles) of driving.although cleaning the throttle body on a regular basis is a recommended maintenance item.

I have a 1997 astro, in the past 8 months the driver side window motor, windshield wiper motor and transmission have all been replaced.the transmission was replaced with 54,202 miles on it, which started giving us problems at about 53,000 miles.the dealership replaced both idler arms at 25,680 miles.had seat belt chime fixed (recall), driver seat feels loose when stopping dealership claims to have tightened it, still feels loose.the van has always idled rough took it in 3 times for that and can't seem to fix that.sliding door rattle they tried to fix that also still rattles.the gas pedal sticks when i take off or when i go in reverse which makes it impossible to take off smoothly.i had an astro and a safari in the past and never had as many problems as i had with this one.

Switch for rear ac/heat burned and smoked when i turned it on.premier motor coach installed it.this is the second failure in this vehicle.last summer, it didn't blow any air.i spoke with premeir as the latest motor lasted 13000 miles. Had i put the heat on and left the car, a fire would have started.i would like to know where else i can turn to. Premier could care less. They are located at 205 complex dr, lakeland florida 33801.they obviously have a defective product and do not back it up for safety.my car was smoking and burning until i turned the switch off. I can not use it until it is replace, at my expense, not premier. I am furious that my family and i were subjected to a dangerous product.premeir motor coach states they have never had any failure and blame the dealer. The dealer has been fair. When driving and a big truck passes the astro and the rear side quarter window shut all by itself, when the window is opened the lock on the window is adjusted so that the window could stay open. But for some reason when something heavy winded comes by like a big truck, the window would shut without any notice. The owner states that there are children that sit back in the rear of the astro, and that this is dangerous for the window to shut like this.

Chevrolet doesn't care about using cheap parts- after warranty they say trade it in .numerous things wrong with van and have talked to chevrolet many times. Can't use back door of van, run out of gas, knobs fall of interior devices, asked chevy to help since 37,000 and problems still happening as i go, can't afford to fix and can't afford to trade. Another nice shove it job by chevrolet they don't stand by their prduct and their product is not safe please respond.

Windshield wipers stop intermitently - at random points - manually moving the wiper blade makes them restart.this is a major safety issue at highway speed in a florida rainstorm.
I contacted chevrolet and they said that they had recalled 1995 and 1996 models for this problem. I know of two other vans that are the same model as mine, and they are having problems with their wipers also. I believe this is a manufacturing defect. This is a safety problem because you don't know when these wipers will stop!

The windshield wipers on my 1997 chevrolet astrovan work intermittently. Sometimes they quit working, sometimes they work constantly while on the intermittent setting. This can be dangerous if they quit working while driving in inclement weather.

The wipers have intermittent problems. You will turn them on with no results. Turning it on a couple more times in quick session will prove useless. Turn them on at a later time and they will work. This sounds simular to another recent gm recall . Please check out .

The windshield wipers on my chevy astro van does not work every so often.i will be driving down the road and want to use them, and they just don't work.to get them to work, i have to pull off the side of the road, shut off my vehicle and turn it back on.i complained to the dealership about this a couple of years ago and they told me that unless it stops altogether, they would not be able to locate the problem.well, now i have 90,000 miles on this van and it's a 5 1/2 year old vehicle (1997).last week 3/7/03, i received a notice of this problem from chevy.chevy will fix this problem if the vehicle has less than 70,000 miles on it.that leave me out of the picture.i don't think that is right, considering that i tried to do something about it years ago.
Windshield wiper stops in vertical position when it wants to, occasionally does not stop when switched off, operates at regular speed when in the intermittent positions.

All of the passenger side wheel nuts stripped while the consumer was driving.the vehicle was towed and the manufacturer was contacted.the manufacturer stated no complaintsof that particular problem had been reported.
Consumer states while traveling, there was a loud bang and vehicle swerved, sheared off, consumer was able to keep vehicle under control and brought vehicle to a stop at the side of the road.( ohio traffic crash report #10-89-206)
