Air bags failed.

No deployment of driver's/passenger's airbag in accident.

Driver rearend vehicle in front with a 35mph - 40 mph impact due to brake failure. Upon impact,dual airbags did not deploy,and driver's seatbelt did not lock up, causing loss of protection and injuries.

While at a complete stop vehicle was rear ended at 50 mph .upon impact, vehicle was pushed forward, and rear ended the vehiclein front.none of the air bags deployed, and driver sustained back and neck injuries.

Battery cable started to smoke under normal driving conditions.also, brake lines had to be replaced because they melted due to heat from the battery short.

Dt:1996 chevrolet astro.the vehicle began to smoke on august 11, 2005.the smoke was coming from the dashboard.the vehicle was being driven when this occurred.the consumer stated the switch or the plug for the rear air conditioner blower melted.also, melted the first six inches of the wiring harness.the vehicle is still drivable.the consumer was able to pull the vehicle over and turn it off.he checked to make sure there were no flames.this problem has not yet been repaired.

Without any warning the instrument gauges on the dashboard stopped working for a couple of seconds.currently, they don'twork for 5 days straight.dealer and manufacturer have been notified.

While driving the belt tensioner flew off the front of the engine, i lost power steering, all brakes,and dash was out. This is a very dangerous situation that will cause loss of life sometime. Something should be done aboutit's a very poor design i have not seen anything like this before. If the belt brakes or the pully come's off your in big trouble. Next day car stalled dealer towed back to shop keep it two days and said they couldn't find any thing wrong.car has not ran that well since they worked on it, just rent a car if i needed to go far.9/16/1999 had to have all fuel injectors replaced and tune-up done on it$978.39ran good for about one week then check engine light indicated the air intake sencor was bad replaced, came on again.was sent to car clinic for diagnostic on system 10/11/1999 found cat, converter is completely plugged $80.00.having replaced today 10/11/1999 $150.00.april of this year the air conditioning that runs to the rear air had a leak in the line that runs back there caused by the insulation rubbing on the line.had the repaired and filled back up.$220.00

This is the second gmc vehicle i have owned that has has intake manifold gasket failure.i understand this happening when a vehicle has been mistreated, or is high mileage.but, at 55,000 miles, this shouldn't be happening.ford has a similar problem in their 3.8 l, and they are taking care of it.i would hope the nhtsa would check to see how many others have this intake manifold gasket problem.the cost is about $ 900 for both gaskets.

When my vehicle was new i complained about the engine, northstar chevrolet put in new fuel injectors at that time, but stated that all astro ran the same as mine, no power and hesitation.now i find out the fuel injectors leak, breaking down the oil, causing damage to the engine.chevy will not admit to this problem.i have spoken to one dealer who keeps the v6 vortec in stock because he sells so many of them.chevy wants heart chevrolet to tear my engine apart before they will do anything and then it will problably only about 20% of a new engine.i take care of my cars and don't mistreat them.i work for a garage.please help.

Sliding door has a tendency to stay shut,not opening from the inside.after dealer makes repairs, the problemreoccursranging from a week to several weeks. Also, often hard to open from outside.

When stopping the truck it takes about 1 minute for the brake pedal to go down, and usually it goes all the way down to the floorboard of the truck and loses all of the braking power.consumer states that ever since the power assist brakes were changed from vacuum to a hydraulic booster, the emergency brake is difficult to operate and weak, the vehicle can not be shifted to park until the engine is started and the rolling speed is sufficiently slow, and when stopped on a grede with the motor off, the foot operated brakes will fail.

Transmission has been replaced byconsumer two times since july 01, 1999 at 109,000 miles and 169,000 miles. During first failure, consumer traveled at approximately 70 mph whentransmission failed ,and left him stranded.during second occurrence engine check light came on.dealership informedconsumerthat it was slipping according to the computer code, and that it needed to be replaced.

We had the transmission go out the first time at 39,000 gm replaced it . The told us with a rebuilt transmssion and found out it was the transmission that was in it fixed. Then at 59,00 the transmission went out again. We had contacted spitzer autoworld at about 31,000 that we was having problems and the transmission was grinding till it warmed up then it quit. They said it wouldnt do any good to bring it in till it was doing it all the time which it wasnt so we didnt take it in. Thenwhen it went out completly and we called them they dont want to fix it. They dont want to make no compensation at all for it. We took it to the person who repaired it orginally and he said the clutches are out again which was the same problem it had. The service manager that was at spitzer when we first reported the problem is gone from there and the women we started working with this time is gone. So we are thinking maybe with all the people leaving gm has not been told the whole story but the representive has said no to the claim and they said once he says no that is the final word. We should not have had this problem again already unless there is a problem with the transmissions! they must be defective cause the prior astro van we had the transmission would do the same thing till it warmed up but thank godwe traded it off before it went out. We have also had windshiled wipers go out power windows tires replaced three times which seems alot for 59,000 miles and a sensor was replaced. Proper matience has always been done on the van.

I was driving down the interstate at 65 miles per hr. And all of a sudden i saw white smoke coming from the back of my van, it looked like the van was on fire, i lost all power to the van, and had no pick-up or speed. I had to divert the van to the shoulder of the highway. When i looked under the hood i found that the transmission cable had come unattached, and i had transmission fluid all over the ground. There were no warning signs whatsoever. Transmission fluid sprayed all the way to my back windshield of the van.

The problem is that there is a part in the transfer case called a viscous clutch. That when it fails the vehicle will roll on any degree of an incline while in park. I have spoken to the chevrolet hot line and several service writers, at several different dealerships. I have basically not recieved the slightest concern from anyone. This is a very serious problem. Who doesn't count on any car [with an automatic transmission]while in park not to roll. I hate to imagine the possibilites. Please consider this a serious problem. Passenger's side seat belt will not disengage from the housing mechanism, thus preventing any usage of the seat belt. Consumer has contacteddealer, parts has yet to be replaced. Please provide any further details.

Upon impact, during frontal crash, at approx. 50mph, shoulder/lap belt fail to retract enough, allowing driver/child pass. In css to impact with interior.

Seat belt on passengers side had to be replaced because it failed to retract properly. Manufacturer refused to reimburse consumer for replacment/repairs.

Consumer had recall 01v123000 "audible warning" remedied on 6/13/03.a few days later he began experiencing problems with vehicle's electrical system.when the interior cabin light was turned on the radio would come on instead.also, when attempting to adjust power windows, the vehicle's alarm would engage.vehicle is currently being checked by dealer.

A hole was found in rear bench seat was caused by a vertical wire that is part of the inner seating support. This could be a serious problem in a crash.

Center bench seat failed.

Metal support in back part of bench seats coming through seat cover, causing a safety hazard.

Set latch failed.

Pin holes in steel brake lines causing complete brake failure. Fortunately vehicle was sitting when brake petal was applied for starting. When pressing brake to start vehicle, petal went completely to floor. When checking under vehicle to analyze problem, pin holes leaks were observed in various places from front to rear in steel lines. I fear what may have happened had the vehicle been in motion, around pedestrians, and/or, on the road.

I just got home & was backing around to where i park when the brake pedal started vibrating. I did manage to park. The next day the vibrating stopped when a grating noise was made. Suddenly the brake pedal came way up. It does have some brakes but they are hard to depress. Suddenly my power steering is gone. There was no indication of problems with either beforehand. This van just passed inspection in mid-august, and has always been taken care of.

Rotors failed.

We bought this van as a conversion van. We have been very unhappy with the perofrmance of the van. We have had the airconditing repaired twice. The battery failed many times. One time the alternator was replaced. There has always been a clonking noise when braking that the dealer can identify. The tires wore out just after they were a year old. On aug 26 2000 i had front disc brake pads replaced and in checking the master cylinder it was discovered that the brake fluid was contaminated i brought the vehicle to the dealer mentioned and his service dept stated that this was done by someone who changed the oil dipped his finger inside with a little grease and contaminated the fluidit was also stated that the brake fluid contained algyalso the brake fluid in the master cylinder was very low it seems that the service dept.finds ways and excuses when the vehicle is under warranty not to fix the problem but instead offers excuses for the problemthis problem can be a very dangerous situation on the interstate highwaysit is my opinion that this should be investigated as this may not be the only complaint of this kind as further information the brake fluid was almost black in colorall mechanics i have spoken to say this is not a normal situationi am going to let them flush the system and refill it at the cost of $80.00 to $100.00 even though under extended warrantybut this is a potentialy dangerous situation

When stopping the truck it takes about 1 minute for the brake pedal to go down, and usually it goes all the way down to the floorboard of the truck and loses all of the braking power.consumer states that ever since the power assist brakes were changed from vacuum to a hydraulic booster, the emergency brake is difficult to operate and weak, the vehicle can not be shifted to park until the engine is started and the rolling speed is sufficiently slow, and when stopped on a grede with the motor off, the foot operated brakes will fail.

I just got home & was backing around to where i park when the brake pedal started vibrating. I did manage to park. The next day the vibrating stopped when a grating noise was made. Suddenly the brake pedal came way up. It does have some brakes but they are hard to depress. Suddenly my power steering is gone. There was no indication of problems with either beforehand. This van just passed inspection in mid-august, and has always been taken care of.

We were driving west on i-80 near gary, in after midnight. 2 of our 4 children are belted in the back, when all of a sudden, we have no steering - the wheel is spinned freely.we drifted at 65 mph and crashed into the guardrail.thankfully there was a guardrail, as about 100 yards further west, 2 lanes of traffic are merging from the right, there was no guardrail, and a very steep ditch (as the tow truck operator later pointed out to us.)100 yards previous, we had gone over an overpass with little shoulder - we surely would have been rear-ended, had we crashed there.the next day, the mechanic says the bolt holding the steering column into the knuckle was gone - it must have worked itself loose.he replacesdthe bolt, showed us how to check to see if it's tight, and we drive home to davenport, ia.(there is body damage.)i may have some of the details wrong;for example, my mileage figures are approximate.i'm entering this from work, but i want to make sure this report gets investigated.it seems to me this sort of thing should never happen - there should be some warning, or there should be more than just one bolt, or something.i believe it's only by the grace of god that we are still alive, but because no one was killed, or even injured, chevrolet will not do anything to change their design.we took it to a chevy dealer for the repair estimates, and the representative said, jokingly, "chevy's paying for this, right?"perhaps they will - i suppose that's between our car insurance adjuster and them.but i feel it's your job to protect the public from this happening again, to us, or to anyone.

I would like to report what i feel is/was a very serious safety defect with my 1996 chevrolet all wheel drive astro van [xxx].recently while driving the right front suspension torsion bar snapped, collapsing the suspension, dropping the entire right side on top of the right front wheel and tire pulling drastically to the right across 2 lanes of traffic. Fortunately traffic was light, and i was traveling at a slow speed -about 40 km/hr in a posted 50km zone as i had just entered the 4-lane roadway. I managed to regain control of the van and steer it to the side of the right hand side of the road. I shudder at the thought if this had happened on the highway or freeway. The licensed journeyman mechanic that looked at the van indicated this was quite common on 90-96 all wheel drive vans stating that the torsion bar actually rusts or corrodes at almost the exact same spot (near the adjuster assembly) and eventually snaps completely breaking the torsion bar into 2 pieces!while he mentioned it was usually the driver's side (mine was passenger side) he indicated gm had recognized the problem and actually completely changed the design of both the torsion bar and the adjuster mechanism!however after contacting a couple of local gm dealers, they all told me was that this was not a product service bulletin related item or an official safety recall!yet they all had heard of it and just happened to have all of the parts in stock to the tune of $1000 (you have to replace both sides with the redesigned items). I found it surprising that they just happened to have 6 torsion bars and 6 adjusters in-stock; when i recently had to special order the rear door handle that had broken. 1996 chevy astro lf torsion bar broke. Luckily it happened after my wife went on an 800 mile trip. Dealer replaced with newly designed shorter bar. Front now a lot lower than original. Dealer did not require or insist the other one be fixed at this time. They adjusted the camber of the wheel to offset the lower lf of the car. After reading other complaints on this board it was clearly a design flaw and should be remedied by gm. They knew--or at least found out about it--otherwise they would not have redesigned the part. They should pay for replacements on both sides. What does it take?

The consumer sat in the driveway, the left side torsion bar snapped.the front left side of the vehicle was sitting on the left front tire.the part was only available through the dealer.by coincidence the right side was sent as well and was sold by the pair.the parts were redesigned and a new but different bracket was included. On august 19,1999, i was backing my 1996 chevrolet astro van out of my parents' garage when i noticed that something wasn't right with the van.i then drove it down the road a few blocks.i pulled over to the side of the road because the van was not driving as it normally does.the van was rocking and sitting lower to the ground.after i pulled over, i looked to see if one of the tires were flat.it was then that i noticed that the entire front end of the van was hanging very low.i then called leon's auto lab, gave them a brief description of the problem and asked if they thought if it was safe for me to drive it to their shop which happened to be a few more blocks down the road.they told me to drive it very slowly to their shop.when i got there, they put the van on a hoist and found that the torision bar was broken.they couldn't fix it so i had to take to speedy's tma.they are located in aberdeen, sd 57401 (1-605-229-1025).they were able to get replacement parts and fix it there.i kept the broken torision bar.the mechanics told my father that the problem was a faulty design.i am frightened to think what may have happened if i had been traveling down the highway at 65mph and the torision bar would've broken.thank you for taking the time to investigate this matter.sincerely,tamara l. My wife went to move our 1996 chevrolet astro van and when she backed up the right front tire was rubbing on the wheel well. Upon further investigation it was determined that one of the torsion bars broke. When i called my local dealer i found the parts were readily available but i would have to replace both sides because they had been "updated". The parts alone were over $500.00. When i removed the old torsion bars i found out what had caused it to break, the receiver tube that the end of the bar went into had filled with dirt and road crude causing the bar to rust and eventully break.this occuredfour days before we were leaving on a 2500 mile trip. If this had occured when we were going down the interstate at 75mph or in the mountains while on vacation it could have been diasaterous. My last complaint is that i was required to replace both torsion bars because the new one would not match the old. You should not have to replace something that is not broken and if they do require you to do so the manufacturer is admitting there is a problem with the old design. I checked in your records and found that the astro and safari vans built from 1992-1996 had almost 200 cases of these torsion bars breaking and a complaint being filed. Who knows how many other ones have broken and gone unreported.the 1997 models did not seem to have a problem because they came out with the updated parts.

Vehicle was backingout of driveway, when a loud noise proceeded the front driver side of the van collapsing onto the front tire. The chevrolet dealer informed me that the torsion bar had failed, and as the part had been redesigned, the passenger side would also be replaced. I requested the parts be returned, and after visually inspecting, it is very apparent that the part failed due to severe rust and corrosion. The original installation of the torsion bar has a retaining sleeve that fits over the failed end of the torsion bar, and connects into the crossmember. The sleeve is designed in such a way that it collects moisture. This in turn causes approximately 6 inches of the torsion bar to corrode, degrading the integrity of the unit. With over 25 years of experience as a mechanic in the aviation field, i am very familiar with corrosion and metal fatique. The new design of the replacement parts, eliminates the sleeve entirely, and there is no moisture collection points. Chevrolet is aware there is a problem, but as long as the consumer is paying the bill, why publicly admit it?with the repair cost and aggravation set aside, the real issue related to this failure is safety. My family had been on the highway just a few minutes before the torsion bar failed. When the front end collapses, the steering capability of the vehicle is close to non existant. This is a safety issue!!!the safety aspect affects the passengers in the vehicle, other motorists, and pedestrians. I also noticed from the numerous complaints on this web site, that several of the failures occurred while the vehicle was parked. This is even a safety issue to anyone around the vehicle, including children and mechanics who might be near or under the vehicle when the failures occur. In my opinion, chevrolet has no intention ofinitiating a recall on their own. Unfortunately, with the number of failures occuring on vehicles that are onlya few years old, the majority of failures are yet to come.

Part#15990701 failed,broke.causing left corner of vechicleto droop almost to interfering with left front wheel.this part is comminly known as a torsion bar and should not be failing/.there was no accident.this vech.is in excellent condition and has never been abused.reparing this is going to be costly;over 1000.00 dollars.because their are no original parts.the parts have been updated and all new parts for both sides of the vech. The left torsion bar on the front suspension failed while the van was sitting in the driveway.champion chevrolet in howell, mi said this is common.they also intsructed me to replace the right torsion bar because it could fail at any time. My complaint is chevrolet is suggesting (which i did) replace an original part that is not broken.gm had an updated part# because they new this is a common failure.i think if a dealer is suggesting you replace a part that is not broken and says it is for your safety, then that should be a warranty item replacement.

The torsion bar snapped in half. This bar was inadequate to the vehicle, and gm has a modified version for this. The bar broke while the consumer was driving the vehicle. The consumer was going 10 mph, when this happened and this caused the leftfront to drop down about 8 to 10 inches and was a violent drop. There were no problems before this. There were no wrecks involved. The consumer had to take in to the midas dealer and have the torsion bars on the left and right replaced with the new modified version. The front shock also broke, as a result of the bar breaking. The total of fixing this was $1,000.00 at the consumer's expense.*sc

Left front torsion bar failed and vehicle's front end dropped approximately 6 inches. I was told that there was a design change that required both left and front torsion bars to be replaced. Additionally, when the van collapsed, an engine oil line was damaged. Total cost: $891.47. Design change indicates that engineering was aware of the problem and designed a more robust torsion bar. This is a critical safety issue, and yet i was told that the vehicle is out of warranty. It is not reasonable to expect this type of failure, no matter how old the vehicle. One would not reasonably expect the frame of a 10 year old vehicle to collapse. Likewise, one would not expect failure of torsion bars that support the vehicle. I was lucky that the vehicle was parked when the incident happened. If moving, total loss of control would have been the result.

I have noticed that there have been no more complaints after the 1996"s.i will assume that chevy replaced the part finally. I count 80 complaints on your website, involving 92's through 96's.how many more are out there that have not been reported? i think chevy knew it had a bad part, & they should pay for repairs.

Fracture of right side torsion bar caused body to drop onto wheel, immobilizing vehicle. Repairs cost $797.12 plus $40 towing and loss of use for three days.

To install air controller third brake light must be raised with a pillar. However pillar reroutes the air coming over the top towards the sides, won't allow air to come down through the controller, also after raising brake light, it cannot be seen in close range, must be several feet away.

Chevrolet astro van 1996. The drivers window motor stopped working about 6 months after purchase, was repaired, then it stopped working again about a 6 months later. The chevrolet dealer will not fix it because they say it is out of warranty. Still unusable.

I have a 1996 chevrolet astro van.i've replaced the driver and passenger side power window motor's four times, each. Our company has 26 vehicles, all astro van's and all have the same problem. I just received a recall notice about the wiper motor on this vehicle.the power window motor definitely is more of a problem.i can't believe that there hasn't been a recall.in the winter, you'll being driving, lower the window and all of a sudden can't get it up.it's even more of a problem when it rains.please check into this. I first replaced the motor on both sides @ 19,000 mile, than 39,000 miles and so on.when i called gm to complain the customer service rep was stone cold; couldn't care less!if you check into this you'll see it's a majpor problem.
