Owner was involved in an head-on collision and there was no deployment of driver's side airbag. Speed at the time of accident was 45-50mph. The cause has not been identified. Dup of 810235, added on 25-feb-98.

Approx. 30 miles an hour when heard an explosion, engine shut down and ignited under the hood, resulting in completely burned.

The contact owns a 1994 chevrolet astro.while driving less than 50 mph, the alternator bracket failed.within a three month period, the bracket has failed twice.the contact attempted to find a replacement component at a junkyard and was informed by the junkyard dealer that he received numerous requests for that particular component due to frequent failures.the vin was unknown.the failure mileage was over 100,000 and current mileage was 105,000.

Owner states that his engine mounts sheared off.owner also notes that he discovered problem when he heard a noise.

Engine stops while driving.

My van has been in the mechanics shop for a total of 12 weeks now.parts cannot be found for this van and it has caused a tremondous inconvenience for our family.there are parts in the engine that must be replaced.

Failure of linear egr valve on my 1994 chevrolet astro mini van.

The legr first went out 11/27/93 taken to the nearest dealer no proplem was found, finally legr valve went out completly 9/04/98 taken to the nearest dealer legr valve was replaced...windshield wiper switch first went out estimate 10/98 after several attempts to get fixed at dealer finally repaired 11/19/98, windshield wiper switch out again not replaced yet out of warrenty and dealer and cheverlot does not want to replace at no charge

For all of you 1994 chevrolet astro owners and any others that have the older 4.3l vortec engine. I have the solution to your legr valve carbon cloging problem. My 1994 ext van has 150,000 miles and i had been getting the rough idle and stalling when at a stop light problem. It has done this before to me every 6months or so and i just pulled off my egr valve, knock out the carbon chunk that is stuck in it and 20 min later im on my way. Well it has come back bad and it is cloging every 20 miles with lots of carbon chunks. Chevy tells me that the lower intake needs to be emoved and bead blasted to remove the carbon build up. I did some research and there was a egr recall that they were supposed to take care of this cleaning if it happened the 1st 7 years or 75,000 miles of the van. Well they wont do it for me and the dealer wants $500-$1000 to do this. I fanaly found the solution to this problem that every chevy owner that has the 4.3l vortec eninge. This is called the klean screen. It is a replacement egr gasket that has a high temp screen at the egr input opening that will stop large chunks of carbon from entering the egr valve and when it gets warmed up the screen will break the chunks up into small peices that will pass the egr poppet.they cost about 13.50 each at auto zone and the company is named tomco inc. Www.tomco-inc.com. It has been 1 week since i have installed the gasket on the original egr valve that came with the van new 150,000 miles ago and it runs great so far. Th gm part number for this gasket is 2-1357. I bought mine at the local autozone by my house in virginia. You can also buy right from the company at 10.50 each with a 5 order min. On feb.1997 i received in the mail a letter from chevrolte stating that they werer having trouble with the linear exhaust gas recirculation (legr). If my vehicle was having trouble with that to please bring it into a chevrolet dealer and they will fix it , no charge. They provided me witha special warranty coverage which stated:seven years or 75,000 miles whichever comes first, the condtion will be repaired for me at no charge. I had no problem with that ath that time but since then i have, in total, to this date (11/15/00)havehad three(3) different legr valves replaced in my van. The first on, sept. 12, 1997, the second one, jan.26, 1999 and the third one, nov.15, 2000.every 2 years theis legr valve needs to be replaced. My van as of today has 70,000 miles on it and is 6 years old. In another 2 years if my van needs a legr valve, i will have to pay out of my poclet to have it fixed. I don't feel that chevrolet has fixed the problem once and for all and i want to know if there is any recourse if this problem happens again. I feel that if chevrolte has had 3 times to fix this problem, and if it happens again, i feel that i should not have to pay to fix this problem out of my pocket because chevrolet has not fultilled their obbligation to tix this problem. Could you tell me or give me guidance as to what cand be done about this? thank you.

A/c fan high circuit design failure. Connector c198 fails instead of fusible link.

Leak in hose caused a/c not to work.

A/c compressor and hose routing failures of dual air under warranty leads to expensive clogging of a/c cores out of warranty.

Brake lights are inoperative when applying the brakes to make a stop.brake lights do not illuminate. Consumer also noticed a recall listed for the same type of problem, however this vehicle wa s not included. Consumer also replaced the bulbs. Please provide any further details.

The intake manifold is not properly manufactured and does not have enough vacuum to operate the controls properly. Please describe.tt

While traveling at 25 mph vehicle shutdown; towed to dealer, and informed consumer of a fuel pump failure, and repairs were made.

Windshield wipers come on and go off inadvertently. Also, the door latches did not operate consistently.

Vehicle rolled away while in the park position and emergency brake on at 24,640 miles.ttconsumer states vehicle was in park and emergency brakes was on, vehicle was in consumer's driveway which has a slight grade on it and about five yards long, it rolled down out of the driveway across a small alley and went over the neighbors hill side and stopped, the only thing that stopped the vehicle was the transmission cross member which was twisted.

The contact owns a 1994 chevrolet astro van. The contact stated that while driving, the entire differential unit fell from the rear of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop where the transmission pin was replaced. The contact waswaiting to find out if the differential could be repaired. The contact called the manufacturer who offered no assistance. The current and failure mileages were approximately 27,000.updated 01/06/11 the consumer stated the previously, transmission pan had to be replaced as it was leaking due to rust.the consumer stated no further repairs have been made as the vehicle was considered not worth fixing after assessing the amount of damage do the advance rust condition. The bolt needed to fasten the seat belt mechanism is missing.alsohole where the bolt should go does'nt have any threads in it. Therefore one cannot use it.

This van is equiped with 4 bucket seats. Since we purchased this van (purchased used spring of 96) we have been having problems with the adjustment or tilting mechanism on all four bucket seat. The tilting mechanism on the back two seat eventually stop working consequently the seat would no longer adjust or stay in the upright or in any other position in other words the back of the seat were essentialy free moving! i took one of the seats out to inspect the operating mechanism and found that there was a stud which holds the operating lever and a tension spring that was broken. I also inspected the 4 other seat and all 4 have the same defective problem. In my opinion this is unquestionably a poor piece of engineering the defective part which causes the problem is made of an alloy that (white metal) that is not strong enough to withstand normal daily use. I visited a local gm dealer and they claim this is not a repetive or problem issue with these seats which i find extremely had to believe. They wanted to sell me replacement mechansim at 218 to 230 each. In other words it would cost me close to $1000.00 to repair this problem. As a result we can no longer place a child seat in any of thefour bucket seats because the seat don't stay upright and we can not tether the child seat in properly. In closing i called gm's customer line and filed a complaint ...as expected becasue the van is past the waranty period there was nothing they could do for me. I have taken one of the operating mechanism to a machine shop and they will manufacture me the part that is defective. Any engineer that would take the time to look at one of these would certainly agree that this is a very poor design which is prone to failure down the road. My concern is one of safety for all other owners of gm astro vans with these type of seats. Gm should come clean and repair this problem. I hope your organization can help those that may be at risk. Whenever the brakes were applied, the front bucket seats would collapse backwards. Had used the latch, but it was worn & would not hold seat upright. This made driving difficult.

When driving the vehicle the driver's and passenger's side seatbacks just collapsedwithout warning. Dealer fixed once, problem still exists.

New is gm is recalling the chevy truck anti-lock brakes. I have a 94 astro two wheel drive van. I've reported serious problems where the vehicle doesn't stop. Does this recall include my vehicle? also; i feel anti-lock brakes should be an option. Anti-lock brakes are for people who feel the need the protection if they pannic stop. Most people acquire the feel of a vehicle and the ability to control it. Anti-lock brales do not operate properly if someone pumps the brake or applys increasing ammounts of preasure to avoid an accident. Anti-lock brakes must have hard consistent pressure to stop a vehicle saftly without having the tires skid. In other words the driver must pannic stop. This is aganist most drivers natural instinct.

Braking seems to fade or delay,when the pedal is pushed, occurs at low speeds. Akbrakes are letting the wheels to continue to roll.

When attempting to stop the van, the wheels locked up and the van slid through the intersection.wheel lock-up has happened multiple times, abs is hit-and-miss.

When braking for a red light and moving into a left turn lane, the abs brakes went off uncontrollably for no apparent reason.i had a very hard time braking and had to put my entire body weight on the brake pedal to stop my vehicle.i actually had to extend my leg and "stand up" on my brake pedal.i am glad i was going rather slow, around 15 m.p.h. Driving vehicle; heard a noise coming from left rear drum. At home, took brakes apart & notice at top it was disintergrating into pieces at 1st rivet road. Checked opposite side it had the same problem. Will be taken to dealer.

Vehicle experiencing brake failure, brakes feel as if there locking up which results in noise. Brakes were changed twice due to faiure.

On november 21st, 2011, i was driving my astro van on a straight road. The vehicle in front of me applied their brakes. I also applied my brakes, but my foot slipped off the brake pedal. I attempted 4 times in a panicked state to try and re-apply my brakes with no success. I struck the vehicle in front of me. After considering what had happened that day and looking at the brake pedal size in the vehicle it is no wonder i couldn't readilly re-apply the brake. I measured the brake pedal surface area. It is approximately 4 sq. Inches.i have since been looking at other vehicles and the size of their brake pedal surface area. I have yet to date found such a small brake pedal in any other vehicle. I have driven this van thousands of miles and know without much consideration the pedals location without looking, but in a paniced state i found you loose that reference and it simply comes down to an increased or decreased chance of hitting that pedal given surface area.

While applying the brakes, the pedal went to the floor.the consumer was able to stop by pumping the brakes more than once.the consumer was able to drive it to the dealer for inspection. The mechanicinformed the consumer that the problem could not be duplicated.please fill in additional information.

Ahydralic brake failure caused a significant increase in stoping distance and resulted in an accident.upon examination at the body shop it was discovered that the left front brake hose had failed as a result of friction abrasion of the brake hose.the splashshield has an opening for the brake hose.the left front brake hose is only partly shielded by an rubber sleeve.this sleeve covers the brake hose and the sleeve extends from the point where the brake hose is connected in the engine compartment to the splashield -- a distance of about three inches.where the hose passes through the splashield, the brake hose is unprotected.there is clear evidence on the brakehose of abrasion wearing to the point where the splashshield wore a hole in the hose.this appears to be a design defect for which a service bulletin or recall should be initiated.

Within a period of three days both lift cylinders failed on my astro van.i first noticed the tailgate was hard to lift and did not stay up very securely. Then three days later i tried to open the hatch but noticed it was very heavy and would not stay up at all.the only way i could use the rear doors was to prop it up with a stick.this created a very dangerous situation as the hatch door is very heavy and could close very violently if the stick were to be bumped.i called the dealership to see if there might be a trend with this problem, they said not to their knowledge.i then paid to have one cylinder ordered as the parts dept. Only had one in stock.on 8/26/99 my wife picked up the set of lift cylinders for me to install.my fear is with individuals that may run into this situation and not fix it.this could cause severe bodily harm if the "dutch" door hatch would slam down on someone.

We own a 1994 chevy astro van. Fortunately, it was sitting in our driveway when one of the torsion bars broke, dropping the van down onto the front left tire. If this had happened while we were driving the van with our family, it could have been disastrous. Two days later, the other torsion bar broke, again in our driveway. In looking at the way the torsion bar is mounted to the cross member, it appears that a manufacture defect created a problem where snow, salt, rain and dirt accumulated into the cylinder shaped tube that the bar is mounted into, towards the rear of the vehicle. The torsion bar, made of spring steel, rusted and broke in two. The torsion bar is part of the suspension that keeps the front of the van up off of the front tires. After reading several online forums, it appears that this same defect has caused several accidents and near accidents to other astro van owners. Whether reported or not reported, the design of the mounting bracket for the torsion bar was most likely used this way so the manufactured could use one size of torsion bar for several vehicles and then modify the mount on each vehicle to accept the same size bar. We have purchased replacement torsion bars (gm parts) for $462.00 and need to also pay to have them installed. The replacement torsion bars are now 3 inches shorter, proving that the manufacture became aware this problem and corrected it with the replacement parts - now without the extra 3 inches of open cylinder to collect salt and snow.i believe this is a very dangerous situation and that these parts should be recalled immediately on all vans with this size of torsion bar. We regularly drive the interstate and had it broke while we were driving it, it would have been like driving on the highway and slamming on your breaks (as the front of the van dropped down onto the tire) and suddenly losing any steering ability or way to control the vehicle. Thankfully, we didn't happen to be driving it when it broke.

Left front (driver side)torsion bar snapped, dropping the body down onto the wheel, rendering vehicle undrivable. This is potentially a very serious defect. At highway speeds this incident would cause total lose of control. I talked with service mgr, and was told this is common failure/defect. He currently has 2 of these vehicles waiting for parts. Gm is awair of the defect, but, has not put it into recall status yet. I was very lucky, i was parked when the torsion bar broke. How many accidents have been caused by this defect, as opposed to looking like the torsion bar broke because of an accident. This is not a dealer problem, it is a manufacturer problem. Part defect.

Would it have even been recognized as the cause of an accident? i have just finished reading the 22 other reported incidents and agree with all the rest that this is a manufacture defect in either the bar or the engineering design. When the dealer repaired the broken unit he said it was suggested by gm to replace both bars, the f-support "a" and arm. We were told that the support was required due to a design change, at a cost to us of $859.00 . It is very appearent to me that gm has recognized the problem, changed the design to remedy the problem and past the cost and the very possible injury on to the public. Torsion bar failure took place in the area of the bushing in the torsion bar arm located in the frame crossmember.this was a known defect by chevrolet who stated theyknow of this problem thru the 1998 model year.the new repalcement parts are of a different design.the event occured the moring after i returned from a trip that was predoninately interstate driving and the component failed as i was entering the vehicle which was parked in my driveway at the time.however had i been on the interstate at the time of the failure i'm sure i would have lost control of the vehicle.when i questioned the dealership where i had the repairs done if they had seen this before they stated they had and "it wasn't a pretty picture".

The vehicle was backing up when the left front torsion bar fractured. The body came down on the lower 'a' frame stop. The turning radius was reduced to create some major concern. I have talk with gm and no recall campaign is currently active for this vehicle. But, gm has done a redesign on the torsion bar assemblies. They recommend replacement of both torsion bars and adjusters to a new design they have shortened the torsion bar to give it less twist. My concern is the drivability of the vehicle upon lose of suspension. Please let me know if others are having the same complaint.

On the morning of5/14/99 my daughter went out to the garage to start the van and saw that the front of van was hanging over the left front wheel and rubbing on the tire. She called me over to see what was the problem. While driving 35 mph, the left side of the vehicle dropped to the ground. The vehicle was serviced and the technician noticed that the stabilizer bar needed replacement. Three weeks and one day later, the right side of the vehicle dropped to the ground due to the stabilizer bar. This occurred without warning while driving 50 mph.

I have had 3 chevrolet astro vans, the first two i purchased new.they are a 1991, 1994 and another 1994 model.i have purchased all three from buford ward chevrolet.on all three units i have had a problem with the windshield wiper motor failing.it is intermittent but happens at the most inoportune time.the wiper motor either fails to start up or it will quit while you're driving down the road in a rain.then after a few minutes the motor will start up again.i also noticed that if i hit the dash board real hard sometimes that will get the motor going again also.on the 1st 1994 model i had, i finally unscrewed the front plastic cover on the wiper motor which covers the computer chip.i placed a fairly thin piece of cardboard between the chip and the cover keeping the chip in place tighter.after doing that, it alleviated the problem.now i have another 1994 with the same problem.this is a safety issue that general motors needs to know about.driving down a crowded 4 lane in the rain and having the wipers fail is a very frightening experience.

Driving the vehicle and the right front tire blew out and all five wheel studs on the right front fractured through ,and the wheel fell off, causing damage to the right front of the van.
