The contact owns a 1996 cadillac seville.while driving 30 mph, the vehicle drove over a slight bump in the road and the air bags suddenly deployed.the contact noticed smoke coming out of the air bags.the vehicle became engulfed with smoke and was very hot.in addition, the contact smelled something burning.the vehicle was driven back to his residence and the auto club came out to cut the air bags.the dealer denied that there was a recall for the vehicle.there is a recall for this vehicle, but only for the 1995 seville (nhtsa campaign id number 98v115000 (air bags)).another dealer was notified and they also denied that there was a recall for this type of vehicle.the contact sustained a sprained thumb and bruises on both hands.the passenger side air bag did not deploy.there was only smoke inhalation from the air bags.the vehicle is currently at the contact's residence.the vehicle has not been repaired, although it was inspected and appears to have a defect.the failure and current mileages were 125,000.
No deployment of air bag in accident.
Smoke came out of the steering column when i took off from a stop light.it was not a great deal of smoke but enough for me to question the problem.i took it to the mechanic and he checked all the wiring in the column and did not find any burned wires.when he removed the air bag package he found what appeared to be burn marks on air bag assembly.he recommended that i take it to dealer at this time.

The contact owns a 1996 cadillac seville. The contact stated that there was a fuel leak. Also, when the vehicle was started, the pass key lock warning indicator flashed. The key would not turn over to start the vehicle on several occasions. The vehicle was unable to be driven each time the failure occurred. Instrument panel short circuits causing the instrument panel to go blank causing loss of gauge function and all tell tale indications except for service engine soon. The loss of tell tales for seat belts, turn signals, high beam hazard, oil pressure coolant temperature. Checked with cadillac they stated my vin number did not fit the critera of the current recall for 96 cadillac seville which has the exact same problem i am describing. *ph

Battery failed.
While entering garage steering froze, driver was not able to complete turn, vehicle lost control, hit another cadillac and garage door, causing extensive damage. Also battery failed several times while driving.

Horn is almost impossible to push in to make any sound. Contacted dealer. Consumer sates horn is to soft to hear even if activated.
While driving in traffic, the engine shuts down (stops running) and of course all power assisted equipment such as power steering, etc. Also does not operate when the engine stops running.the vehicle was taken to a cadillac dealership to correct this safety problem on the following dates & with the following mileage:03-20-98, capital cadillac, atlanta, miles 15,105; 05-10-99, capital cadillac, atlanta, miles 26,512; 03-31-2000, claude nolan, jacksonville, miles 36,269; 06-01-2000, claude nolan, jacksonville, miles 38,713; 10-17-200, claude nolan, jacksonville, miles 44,429; 11-08-2000, claude nolan, jacksonville, miles 46000.the vehicle has been at delerships for the same safety defect 6 times including the last 10 days.i have contacted cadillac customer care on numerous occassions.they have a file, case # co2178311 and there is a cadillac technical assistance case # 4336165.the dealership and cadillac both confirm there is a problem, but do not know how to correct it.it is extremely dangerous in terms of possible property damage, and more important possible bodily injury or death due to this problem.

On several occasionsconsumer smelled smoke and a burning odor coming from the steering column while driving 50 mph. Vehicle was taken to two separate dealers. Both dealers informed consumer that the problem was not covered under a recall.
Consumer was traveling about 70mph onhighway andrpms went all the way to zero.he pulled over and had to be towed. Dealership was aware of the problem .meter assembly/sender assemble and harness.there was a design flaw. Also, wires were melted together, causing a shortage.
Turn signal fuse shorted.
Vehicle has been brought back to the dealer on at least 8 occasions for loss of digital display and all ligths. On at lease three occasions vehicle has just stopped operating.after the last time that the vehicle stopped in the middle of the road and i just bearly avoided a major accident i took the vehicle off the road.i cannot sell this vehicle or trade it in as i would fear someone else being injured or even worse killed in this vehicle.

Dt: the consumer's vehicle had problems with it's instrument cluster.the consumer searched the internet for a instrument cluster recall.he found a recall but was told by the dealer and manufacture that his vehicle was not included in the recall.the speedometer would will go from 10mph to 140 mph and the tachometer would go from normalto 0.sometimes the vehicle would not start. Refr# cadillac 1-333-062133, campaign # from recall95v224000.occasionally all engine power is abruptly lost without warning at low speeds of 10-30 mph resulting in loss of control with power steering function lost.on 2 occasions the car steered itself into an opposing traffic lane.no collision occurred because the opposing traffic lane was free of traffic. Steering control without power steering was impossible after engine failure.

The contact owns a 1996 cadillac seville sts. The contact was driving approximately 25 mph and smelled a strong burning odor of fumes inside of the vehicle. The engine began to overheat, causing the temperature gauge to increase rapidly to hot. The contact maneuvered to the side of the road to inspect the vehicle and noticed a substantial amount of coolant leakage underneath the dashboard and the front passenger floor area. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 138,000.
When driving at any speed consumer heard knocking sound coming from the engine. Dealerexamined the vehicle, but would only change theoil.the noise is still being heard while the vehicle is on.
Northstar engine problem - the head bolts pulled loose causing engine coolant to leak into the exhaust. Had inserts put in by local mechanic who had previously done two such repairs (cadillac advised that it only had a 60% chance of fixing the problem if they did the work and the cost would be $3,000 - $4,000). Car had about 70,000 miles on it at time of failure. Car ran well until october 2008 when coolant loss started again. Have tried various sealant but it is likely the head bolts again. An aluminum block with aluminum heads and high compression appears to be combine with a weak design of the head bolts. From what i hear all northstar's of this era will have this problem at some point and the problem was not fixed until 2001 or so. It is said that a jeg's motor has addressed this problem but at a cost of what, $3,000 plus installation? i like the car but it is hard to work on and has its share of issues.
My 1996 cadillac sedan deville caught on fire on 3-20-10 after i started the engine.i had it towed to a local dealership which informed me that there was an open recall on the engine fuel rail which i was not aware of.i contacted general motors and informed them of the damages to my car and they told me that the statue of limitation had expired on my car. My problem is how could they have forseen that this was going to happen unless they knew that there was a problem. I was informed that the statue of limitation expired on 2-13-02 and the recall was issued until 4-16-04 which does not make sense unless they knew there was a problem and just didnt do anything about it. My question is did i have to get burnt or lose my life in that car for general motors to take responsibilty for what happened to my car. Now i have no transportation and general motors wont take responsibility for what happened. An employee from geralds tires had to run and get a fire extingusher to put the fire out before any ofthere customers or employees got hurt when the fire ignited. Who is going to hold these manufactures liable for there negligence.if i had received a recall notice i would have had the fuel line replaced because thats something very serious and dangerous and i drive my kids and grandkids in that car because thats my only vehicle and i feel that general motors should stand up and take resposibility for there negligence it is something that they manufactured and also dana the maker of the fuel line.
Gm has a known problem with the cadallic northstar 4.6l head gaskets. They broke down between 70,000 and 140,000 miles gm will not assist in the repair of the head gaskets. Our cadillac is a 1996 with 72,000 miles and has had the leaking since 40,000 miles.the dealer was and is willing to repair for approx. $3500.00. We have never been told about the lawsuit that was files and the dealer has known about the dex coolant problem. The dealer will not guarantee the head gasket they said was needed . I did not know that there were service bullittins on putting inserts in the block for the head bolts. I think over 50% of these engines have had the gasket replaced.this was a problem, but i know that they like the money that it brings in to them.
Engine check light has been coming on occasionally since 1998. Taken to dealer numerous times, could not find a cause.on 19 dec 2001, engine service light came on, then the light stopped engine. Consumer had vehicle towed to dealer, who determined engine coolant had leaked intoengine. Engine had to be replaced.

Dealer don't know how to handle the problem, car this year only was at the dealer over 60 bussines day alone,as for the engine oil consumtion, prior to replacing the engine, the engile will consum 1 qtr per 1000 mile, the car will give an indication of adding oil after 2000 miles before i get the chance to change oil. Currently have a new engine, don't know if the problem resolved yet. There was no leak of oil
Engine warning light would come on during normal operation ofvehicle while traveling at any speed. Mechanic diagnosed that an engine coolant bypass hose leaked, and caused severe damage to the engine, which has to be replaced at consumer's expense.please provide any additional information / documentation.
I had a oil cinsumption problem the car had been using 3 qts of oil every 1800 miles. We found out from a tech that work there at the dealership that there had been a notice sent out to all tech that there was a problem with this and had been for sometime with the northstar engine. And that there still is. The problem is with carbon built up in the rings they added a cleaner to take the carbon off. This is all at the cost of the customer . Which was $524.24 and has not taken care of the problem. I called cadillac they told me i was not to get this information it was for teck use only.

They replaced the fuel pump and i had car towed to dealer. Dash board panel would read battery, no charge when it would rain had belt replaced.had several stiff spots when turning steering wheel on 11/1/01.rack and pinion and water pump had to be replaced with only 45654 miles.on 1/30/01 dealer performed "protect injector service" at 49481 miles.2/20/02 returned car to dealer, gas pedal was sticking. They cleaned deposit is from throttle blades at 49533 miles.car began stalling again.10/29/01 egr valve replaced with 60324 miles.12/12/01 spark plugs had to be replaced due to poor performance with 60324 miles.we have replaced the tires, front and back brakes.the air conditioning went out may, 2002.had it repaired on 7/9/02 replaced r&r compressor assembly, expansion tube assembly, a/c recharge, freon, dye kit, a/c oil and orifice tube with an odometer reading of 69860!!ridiculous isn't it??not done yet7/11/02 - a/c is out again.this time had to replace the a/c sensor, a/c switch, acm module, r&r switch compressor cut-off, r&r sensor sunload (atc), r&r module climate control.today, it still doesn't work.i'm tired of pumping $$ into something that is a lease.we contacted cadillac on helping us get out of this lease and into a different gm lease, they wouldn't help.this car has been nothing but trouble since day 3.when parking the car and trying to remove keys is another problem.we have to hit the top of the shifter to get the keys to release.the shifter sticks and won't release the keys.currently, the problem we have is the banging under the car, which we found are the struts.they don't even make after market ones yet!let us know if any of these things are "recalled".caddy crap!!thank you.dt
I paid for a new engine i believe rhat mataga of stockton rebuild my old engine. My old engine had sugar in the oil . Had the same tapping noise . Would like for them to prove it. I was told the 2000 engine have the same problem. I want it fix or replace.

Cadillac knows this is a problem. Please stop them from stiffing the owners of any year northstar engine with the bill of $1800 to fix the problem. I had a 76 grand prix 400 v8 engine with 245000miles on it that didnt leak oil like this engine. If i knew cadillac had a design defect with northstar engines i would not have bought the car.

I am very concernedabout the oil consumption that is being used in my car. I have been told by cadillac that it is normal for this engine to use 2-3 quarts of oil for every 3000 miles, with the many differents cars that we have owned i have never hadthis problem before.the warranty for the car expires at 70000 miles.what other action can i take.
2nd time to experience loss of engine power while decelerating.last time it occurred around 5/7/99 at 38,000 miles, automobile dealer had noticed on exact problem and mileage when serviced 5/21/99.the engine loses power and no acceleration experienced when step on gas.auto slows down and must coast to stop, hard to steer, etc.when turned off engine, and restarted automobile the problem went away both in may and again in june.

The left rear tail light gets fogged up due to moisture and water getting inside of the lens. Dealer says cadillac wont let them change it. The only short term solution is to blow dry the light.
Turn signals failed.
The contact owns a 1996 cadillac seville.the contact stated that the vehicle was repaired under nhtsa campaign id number: 04v110000 (fuel system, gasoline:delivery:hoses, lines/piping, and fittings) for a fuel leak but the failure recurred.the vehicle was leaking gasoline onto the ground from the engine compartment, which the contact was concerned could possibly cause a fire.the dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure, but denied any assistance with repairs to the vehicle.the vehicle was not repaired.the approximate failure and current mileage was 150,000. The vin was unavailable.
My 1996 cadillac sedan deville caught on fire on 3-20-10 after i started the engine.i had it towed to a local dealership which informed me that there was an open recall on the engine fuel rail which i was not aware of.i contacted general motors and informed them of the damages to my car and they told me that the statue of limitation had expired on my car. My problem is how could they have forseen that this was going to happen unless they knew that there was a problem. I was informed that the statue of limitation expired on 2-13-02 and the recall was issued until 4-16-04 which does not make sense unless they knew there was a problem and just didnt do anything about it. My question is did i have to get burnt or lose my life in that car for general motors to take responsibilty for what happened to my car. Now i have no transportation and general motors wont take responsibility for what happened. An employee from geralds tires had to run and get a fire extingusher to put the fire out before any ofthere customers or employees got hurt when the fire ignited. Who is going to hold these manufactures liable for there negligence.if i had received a recall notice i would have had the fuel line replaced because thats something very serious and dangerous and i drive my kids and grandkids in that car because thats my only vehicle and i feel that general motors should stand up and take resposibility for there negligence it is something that they manufactured and also dana the maker of the fuel line.
While driving. The consumer smelled gas fumes.the consumer then noticed a little smoke, she thenpulled into a parking lot away from others, lifted the hood and flames ignited.she said the flames wasso hot and high that it burned the paint on the hood and the installation that was under the hood.she said she did not sustained any injuries.the fire dept was called and they put the fire out.
Car was purchased (leased) on 2/22/00.car kept stalling while driving or wouldn't start at all.had it towed to dealer on 2/29/00. They couldn't duplicate the problem on 6/8/00. They replaced the fuel pump and i had car towed to dealer. Dash board panel would read battery, no charge when it would rain had belt replaced.had several stiff spots when turning steering wheel on 11/1/01.rack and pinion and water pump had to be replaced with only 45654 miles.on 1/30/01 dealer performed "protect injector service" at 49481 miles.2/20/02 returned car to dealer, gas pedal was sticking. They cleaned deposit is from throttle blades at 49533 miles.car began stalling again.10/29/01 egr valve replaced with 60324 miles.12/12/01 spark plugs had to be replaced due to poor performance with 60324 miles.we have replaced the tires, front and back brakes.the air conditioning went out may, 2002.had it repaired on 7/9/02 replaced r&r compressor assembly, expansion tube assembly, a/c recharge, freon, dye kit, a/c oil and orifice tube with an odometer reading of 69860!!ridiculous isn't it??not done yet7/11/02 - a/c is out again.this time had to replace the a/c sensor, a/c switch, acm module, r&r switch compressor cut-off, r&r sensor sunload (atc), r&r module climate control.today, it still doesn't work.i'm tired of pumping $$ into something that is a lease.we contacted cadillac on helping us get out of this lease and into a different gm lease, they wouldn't help.this car has been nothing but trouble since day 3.when parking the car and trying to remove keys is another problem.we have to hit the top of the shifter to get the keys to release.the shifter sticks and won't release the keys.currently, the problem we have is the banging under the car, which we found are the struts.they don't even make after market ones yet!let us know if any of these things are "recalled".caddy crap!!thank you.dt

1996 cadillac seville. Strong smell of fuel coming from under the hood. Removed the engine cover to see fuel spraying out of a pin hole in the fuel rail. It was wetting wires contained in a harness. I am unable to drive the car and will be bringing it to the dealer.

Nhtsa recall campaign number:04v110000 nhtsa action number:ea04003 my gm service request number:71-584885453 issue: my cadillac's fuel rail has a leak (in fact 3).i found the recall on-line, and called cadillac.they stated they inspected the vehicle on 9/13/2004 and at that time, there was no leak.they did not replace the fuel rail with the stainless steel rail.they told me yesterday (lin foster at gm corporate 800-333-4223) that their duty was to inspect the vehicle.and as they had inspected it in 2004 and there were no issues then, they had no duty now. I took the cadillac to my cadillac dealership this morning (bob allen cadillac in danville, ky).they confirmed that there was no stainless steel fuel rail on the car.i called gm cadillac again (800) 458-8006.spoke with jill this time.she stated she could not pull up the nhtsa information to read it herself... So i read it to her.she had my vin, and to me, the recall information is quite clear.the 8th digit of my vin is "y", and as i read the recall information, gm is supposed to install the stainless steel fuel rail. Gm/cadillac state they have no duty what-so-ever.that their obligation was performed in full with their 9/13/2004 inspection (in which they also confirm they did not replace the fuel line).they will not assist in any way.they dealer is readily willing to do the repair, if i pay for it. Consumer receivedrecall notice 04v110000 concerningfuel rail tubing.afterrecall repairswere donewhendriver start up the vehicle it hesitated while driving at anytime. Mechanicdetermined that the fuel pressure regulator needed to be replaced, but this part was not included with thisrecall notice.gm had to redesign the fuel pressure regulator, which is an interact part of the fuel rail but expects the consumer to pay for it. Consumer feel this is unfair.
Fuel leak caused passenger compartment to fill with gasoline smell.opening the hood and removing the plastic cover over the engine found a fuel rail tube squirting gas continuously on the intake manifold when the engine was operating. The engine was immediately shut off to prevent a fire.
I just recently noticed a fuel odor from car. When filling up with gas i noticed a small amount of fuel on the filler tube. Upon inspection the tube is rusted and needs replacement for about $400.00.i am surprised that the filler tube would rust through. Is there a possible defect in the design or thickness of the filler tube?

The key would not turn over to start the vehicle on several occasions. The vehicle was unable to be driven each time the failure occurred. The vin was not included in nhtsa campaign numbers: 95v224000 (equipment) and 04v110000 (fuel system, gasoline). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and recommended that the vehicle be taken to a dealer for further diagnostic testing. The vin was not available. The failure mileage was 117,000.

While driving at 35 mph another vehicle stopped in front of consumer's vehicle, causing the consumer to apply the brakes, and the consumer rear end another vehicle. Also,the frame cracked and the bumper on the consumer's vehicle was under the other vehicle.
While entering garage steering froze, driver was not able to complete turn, vehicle lost control, hit another cadillac and garage door, causing extensive damage. Also battery failed several times while driving.

Driving vehicle about 45mph when the steering wheel suddenly locked up; very hard to steer; wife helped steer to side of rd.; called cadillac helpline & told 96 chasiss put on 95 body frame & caused water to be thrown on belts from tires,that's reason for steering problem.
Consumer was making a right turn when the steering locked up in the middle of the road. This was a rainny day, dealer says the power steering belts slips in the rain, and replaced . 22328 miles at this time.

Tire failed.(michelin).
Engine warning light would come on during normal operation ofvehicle while traveling at any speed. Dealership examinedvehicle and could not determine a cause for the problem.then with approximately 61,000 miles onvehicle , engine warning light illuminated again, and the vehicle was towed todealership. Mechanic diagnosed that an engine coolant bypass hose leaked, and caused severe damage to the engine, which has to be replaced at consumer's expense.please provide any additional information / documentation.
Engine check light has been coming on occasionally since 1998. Taken to dealer numerous times, could not find a cause.on 19 dec 2001, engine service light came on, then the light stopped engine. Consumer had vehicle towed to dealer, who determined engine coolant had leaked intoengine. Engine had to be replaced.
The rear deck lid pull-down failed to operate. The pull down switch was replaced. *jg

Linda m west was driving at 45 mph on 4 lane city highway on 2/12/99.when approaching red light, she took her foot off the accelerator but the car did not slow down.applying full force to the brakes did not stop the car.to avoid colliding with car in front of her, she turned off the ignition.after restarting the car, the accelerator was normal.parked car immediately and had towed to dealer.dealer replaced accelerator cable.no known cause of failure.one strand broke, unraveled, and did not allow deceleration.charles called gm customer service on 2/15/99 to inform of safety problem.inquired about safety recalls and technical bulletins.none existed for this problem.since it was a near accident and a safety problem, i requested a technical bulletin be prepared.customer service representative indicated it was a gm decision.i asked to talk to supervisor but received an address to write.i was not satisfied that a part failure nearly lead to an accident and that gm was not taking it very seriously.i examined the new cable and determined the cable is under very little tension and that it does not rub on any other parts.i am concerned that the part may be faulty and that gm should alert dealers to the potential safety problem.i do not understand why the part should have failed and would like a straight answer from gm.when i inquired if i could receive the results of the investigation, i was told i could not get it.
The engine continues to race after taking foot off the accelerator pedal.after coming to a complete stop. The brakes do not hold and the vehicle lunges forward. The dealer is aware of the problem. The dealer hasn't corrected the problem.
