I was the driver and only person in an automobile accident on february 16, 1999 between my 1998 cadillac deville concours and a 1977 dodge camper top van. The side air bags did not deploy to prevent my head and left shoulder from impacting the left window and door frame. The dodge van impacted my left tire quarter panel, driver door panel, and left passenger door panel to the extent that the side mirror was knocked off the door, the driver window damaged, and the driver door indented enough to prevent the window from going down. I am suffering from severe cervical strain/sprain, multiple cervical sublunations, left shoulder, rifgt side, neck, and back pain.

Consumer will complet informationform concerning air bags side recall. The dealer does not have the part to be replaced for manufacturer recall.

Dt*: the contact stated while driving 55 mph on normal road conditions,there was an accident due to temporarily losing consciousness.the contact and a passenger were both wearing seatbelts.the seatbelts did not restrain the occupants during the accident and the airbags did not deploy.the contact and the passenger both endured moderate injuries; the contact sustained a concussion, and neck problems while the passenger sustained a concussion, cracked breast bone and knee injury.the vehicle was totaled and towed to a service lot.pictures were taken and a police report was filed.the manufacturer was notified who sent out an independent inspector. Was told by dealer i could park car until april 2001 when a recall would be issued or sign a waiver and have air bags disconnected.

There was a recall on the airbag sensor of my vehicle in 2000. Cadillac issued a safety recall for 1998 & 1999 sedan devilles in sept. 2000 relating to the possible unintended activiation of the driver's and passenger side air bags and the risk of injury or death as a result. I purchased a '98 sedan deville on oct. 6, 2000 and the ettleson cadillac salesman at no time told me the vehicle was subject to a safety recall and that we might be in danger driving the car. Until the sensor modules were replaced.i drove 1,200 miles back to colorado and did not learn of the danger until two weeks later through articles in the new york times and wall street journal.when i wrote the salesman asking why he did not warn me he declared--hard to believe--that he was unaware of any safety recall. (i would not have bought the car in that condition, of course, and he probably realized that.) when i wrote ettleson's general manager, larry smolinski, to complain about his dealership selling a defective vehicle without warning me of the possible danger, smolinski did not bother to reply to my letter.how would a government agency respond if walmart were to sell toasters that were a known fire hazard and not even warn its customers? if a recall were ordered for a dangerous toycould toys r us continue to sell it?this dealership should be reprimanded by your agency for this dangerous practice.

In 2001, the right headlight lens on my 1998 cadillac deville fell off.the dealer, heritage cadillac, replaced the headlight assembly at no cost, since the car was still under warranty.on 11/6/04, the left headlight assembly fell off. I have not yet discussed the problem with the dealer.

In april 2001, at 37,000 miles, air condition/heat fan motor failed and was replaced (under warranty) by a dealer.again in april, 2003, at 53,300 miles, local dealer says motor is defective and needs to replaced at cost of $420.attitude of dealer and cadillac customer service is that "stuff happens".my belief is this failure rate indicates problem with quality of fan motor or problem with motor electrical circuit.

Dt:while driving down the road there was an oil leak and vehiclelost about 7 quarts of oil.this got all over the motor, muffler, and the road.there was a strong burning smell, but did not catchon fire.mechanic told consumer that was the oil pressure sensor.has not yet been repaired, but the whole engine will need replacement. For new engine and clean upit would cost $8,400.00 .

The volts went to 11.1 and then the car failed to run. Dealership said that the alternator was fried. Replaced alternator. All other electrical checked out ok.

After repairs the previous day, alternator again fried. The dealership now blames after market battery. Supposed dead cell. This instance almost caused a wreck on the interstate. Stranded for 3 hours. New battery and alternator. Car was dead when towed to the dealership. After finally arriving at end destination, i had the battery the was supposed to be bad checked and it checked out ok.

Horn failed almost resulting in vehicle collision.

When depressing the horn pad no sound comes from the horn. On 4 different ocassions the vehicle has been taken to 2 different dealerships for this problem. The horn will blow sometimes and sometimes it will not.

I was informed that my spark plugs wires were burning with only 46,000 miles on this car. And the wires in the back of the engine are in a very bad way. I also was told that a spark could ignite from the engine at any time, and cause an immediate fire.

The air conditioning was too cold on passsenger side - closed vents - when comfortable they were opened only to find that there was now hot air coming out.the next series of events took place in a very short amount of time.the control for the headlights was dimming to off then going on, the air conditioning stopped working, the instrument panel digital display went out leaving no indication as to speed.the passenger noticed a glow in the door panel, this glow was a fire.i pulled on to the shoulder and we got out.i called *11 indiana toll road for assistance and the fire was extingusted in a matter of minutes.the car is now at the dealer in oak lawn il. And general motors is investgating the incident.

My 1998 cadillac deville needs a vital part to it's abs/traction control function. However, gm has discontinued making the part, (#19244918)with no available substitute. Therefore, leaving my car with no abs or traction control. Also, the transmission no longer engages 1st gear. (a supposed saftey measure)which in most cases, only puts my family's safety at risk. I do not understand how or if, gm can legally put profits before safety.

Driving and the stability light came on and the car began to bounce slightly.continued to drive and bouncing had gotten worse and eventually cased me to go off the road when switching lanes the back end of my car spun around.thank god their were no other cars around or it would have been a horrible accident.

The contact owns a 1998 cadillac deville. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds the vehicle would stall due to the engine overheating. The failure would occur whenever the vehicle was in operation for a few minutes. During the failures, the engine overheat light would illuminate on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the contact was informed that the freeze plug needed to be replaced. Only to receive the brush off from the dealership about gm's allowable northstar consumption.this engine is consuming 4 qts per month on average and is not acceptable in my book.what do i do now ? no manufacturers warranty or extended left to help and only 80,000 miles on this vehicle. One night my family and i were driving my 1998 cadillac deville, and all of a sudden the heater coil burst without warning, the heater was not on and the car was not running hot. The car filled with steam making it impossible to see anything, and hot scalding water and anti-freeze poured out from under the dash board right over the gas peddle and scalded my right foot causing serious burns and leaving horrible scars. Luckily we were traveling on a country road with little to no traffic. I am relieved that me nor my family was seriously injured other than my foot being burned. Car dealer was notified, and nothing was done. I feel like this is a very dangerous matter that should be looked into and have something done about it.

Customer was driving vehicle down road, all of a sudden coming up to a stoplight car suddenly died, at the same time white smoke came billowing out the back of the car, it caused a traffic hazard in which nobody could see her car, she was rearended, as well as the guy that rearended her. The occupant of the vehicle that rearended her ended up getting his nose broken when he hit his steering wheel. Vehicle taken to dealership and was determined that the rear head bolts had pulled from the block causing the head to separate from the block of the vehicle, quoted $4500 to repair and was told they could not warranty repair because it is a northstar engine. Vehicle then brought to me to get it repaired.

Dt*: the contact stated the vehicle's oil and antifreeze leaked causing the intake and outtake of the engine to rust, in turn causing the pipe to bust and the vehicle to overheat.the vehicle needed a new engine to fix this issue.updated 12.8/2006 - 4.6 liter northstar engine. Attention: ms. Denise [email protected] reviewing the information service bulletin sent to me i am under more convinced that this engine is defective. I have had engine cooling also high oil consumption every since 57.000 miles,i mention it to the service advisor and no one ever told about these bulletins no one mention that their was a problem with engine or tell me about the , fwd rtv sealant procedure with current oil distribution plate or the rusted heater pipes that go through the engine block that carries the coolant. Also leaks in the car causing fumes which are toxic. I must have 20- 1 gallon anti- freeze bottles in my garage. I carry at least 6 quarts motor oil with me, the over 75,000 mile oil. I use more oil and anti- freeze than gas.2006 consumer action handbook states and i quote" sometimes a manufacturer makes a design or production mistake on a motor vehicle. If dealers report a number of complaint about a certain part or vehicle, the manufacturer may allow dealers to repair the problem at no cost to you even if the warranty has expired. A service bulletin notifies the dealer of the problem and how to solve it. Because these free repairs are not publicized, they are called "secret warranties" thenational highway traffic safety administration maintains a database of service bulletins filed by manufacturers. I also have all the maintenance records for my 1998 cadillac and was never imformed of these problems or i would have had them repaired when the car was under warranty. I have doctor's appointments i can't keep because i don't have transportation. The dealer told me i have blown head gaskets which comes from overheating due to the cooling leak and oil leaks.the heater pipes have rusted pouring out engine coolant. Which does not produce heat at this time. I need all the help i can get, i"m on a fixed income and money is scarce. Why don't they run copper pipes they don't rust. It's for the heating system. Please help.

While driving on the highway motor overheated causing a stall..was told by dealer that the head bolts strip out of all northstar motors..cost of repair is aprox. $3000.00..called gm assist hotline and told they will offer no help

I have a 1998 cadillac deville that i am putting the 3rd engine into the car due to a head gasket problem. My parents have the same car with the same problem. I have read classifieds that citizens who own the same car are forced to give the car away because of this head gasket problem. Anyone who can service this car (including a cadillac dealership) has admitted that it is a very common problem with this car, and that there is no financially reasonable repair, and replacing the engine is usually the only recommendation. My understanding is that cadillac recognized this problem, and made a correction to these north star engines in the year 2000. This is obviously a cadillac blunder that is proven costly, but the cost is only being absorbed by the customer.i am all for being accountable, but having the choices of putting a 3rd engine in the car or junking would be deemed as extreme. Why is cadillac not recalling this particular year cars engine? i am sure that any research that you conduct will show an abundance of this problem. What protection does the consumer have in this regards?

Not a safety defect but this car is leaking oil around the oil pan and from what i understand from the dealer that they have redesigned the rubber gasket to withstand hotter tempatures and i feel that this should be some kind of recall on this. The dealer is wanting $1800.00 to repair this and my car has only 58,000 miles on it.

I have a 1998 cadillac deville that knocks on cold start and under load.

Having major problems with vehicle from the dexcool coolant . After water pump was replaced then the radiator had to be replaced, days after problem with head gaskets were the coolant leakedonto the manifold, and engine ran hot.

While driving at normal speeds vehicle got a flat. While raising the vehicle with original jack itsuddenly collapsed. There were no injuries.the jack collapsed crushing the area of the lower front fender behind the wheel.the jack collapsed immediately after putting on the spare and hand tightening the nuts.car was in park and the emergency brake was on.

Headlamp lenses cloud reducing nighttime visibility for driver and for other vehicles.polycarbonate lenses discolor and turn yellow.problem is pervasive across most makes and models.replacement lenses are very costly.the problem did not exist when glass headlamps were used, and replacement was inexpensive.

I as driving on a farmed market road (f.m.) approx. 55 mph. And the right headlight lens flew off the car. Luckily there wasn't any other cars behind me, and there wasn't any damage to my car and/or anyone elses vehicle. After i returned home, i checked the driver's side lens to discover it was loose as well.

Noticed that one passenger side headlight was out, but i still had the high beam.a few days later both were out.went to auto parts store to have them put in new bulbs and they noticed the that plastic cover was missing and they said that caused the bulbs to short out. I am very concerned about the headlights going out on my 1998 cadellac develle. The passenger side lens blew off the car and went flying.the headlight went out. I stoped to see what had happen - saw no lens on the one side. Checked the other side and the lens was ready to fall off.i had not lights on one side and if i had not wired the other lens in place it would have blew off and i would have had no headlights. Two days before christmas of 2003 i noticed the clear plastic outside shield to my driver's side headlight assembly was missing, it just fell off. Now this cover is part of a sealed headlight assembly to protect the light bulbs from the weather elements so that they will not burn out. This part is suppose to be permanently glue together but apparently it wasn't, so i checked the other side and it was loose and it fell off in my hand. I drove to my local cadillac dealer to ask them about this problem and to see if they had new shields. The parts manager proceeded to tell me that the headlight assembly is one piece and he told me that they keep them in stock because they have problems with them all the time. The cost of these headlight assemblies are $250.00 a piece for a part that should last a life time unless damaged in an accident. I asked him if there was some kind of recall and he said no. My concern about this whole thing is when the weather elements hit my headlight bulb it blew it out. If i wouldn't have notice my other cover was loose i would have lost all lighting and may have been involved in a major accident. I went to an auto wrecker and bought a used headlight assembly for $160.00 and i have the other cover bungee strapped on. I contacted gm by e-mail several weeks ago about this problem and they never responded to my e-mail and i know they got it. I think they are trying to blow me off so that nothing comes of this, so i hope someone will review this problem and help me and others who have had this problem but never said anything about it. My 1998 cadillac deville needs a vital part to it's abs/traction control function. However, gm has discontinued making the part, (#19244918)with no available substitute. Therefore, leaving my car with no abs or traction control. Also, the transmission no longer engages 1st gear. (a supposed saftey measure)which in most cases, only puts my family's safety at risk. I do not understand how or if, gm can legally put profits before safety.

Car has been owned by the dealer since new rotors have been turned 3 times now for being warped mfgr& dealer refuse to replace them stating this is normal wear and tear but i can buy them aftermarket that are garunteed not to do this mfgr also says needing turned 3 times is normal in 40,000 miles i am concerned that now the rotors are to thin and will warp more even and may possibly fall apartthese rotors are over 200.00 each there needs to be a recall on them before someone is killed this is not normal wear and tear i have worked on cars for 40 yrs and have never seen a set that needed turned this oftenand know turning them this many times makes them unsafe.

Whenbrake rotors get hot theywill develop a pulsation ,which feels likerotors are warped andshimmy. But when the rotors are cool vehicle will run smooth. The manufacturer will only warranty the rotors for vehicle less than 10,000 miles.

Brake line ruptured due to it chafing against the frame, this caused vehicle to crash into another vehicle,an independent inspector verified that the steel braided brake lines were rubbing on the frame and wore through causing breake fluid loss, there were no injuries in accident.

Right front head lamp lense fell off.repaired february 19, 2003.left front head lamp lense fell off, december 19, 2001.these head lamps are not sealed properly causing lense to fall off.when brought in february 19, 2003 a 1998 cadillac came in behind mine and i ask the driver if he had the same problem and he stated that his right lense had fallen off.checking with the parts department i was informed they keep plenty of these in stock as it happens frequently.when the first one fell off it was repaired under the warranty.i purchased a extended warranty from the dealership and was informed it was identical to the original warranty but extended for 2 additional years and 25,000 miles.when i had the second lense replaced on february 19, 2003 the service advisor informed me it was not covered under the extended warranty.cadillac is charging $245.00 for a defected part plus tax and labor.

When engine is started, both when cold and hot, in all gear selector positions, and an attempt is made to depress the accelerator pedal, the pedal will nor depress normally.to depress the pedal, a moderate force is required.when this is done, the pedal linkage then makes a "snapping sound"and the pedal then advances suddenly, causing the engine rpm to race.if the car is in any gear when this is done (drive or reverse), the vehicle will then either lurch forward or in reverse.the dealer serviced this problem for the first time on feb 6, 1999, at which time they diagnosed the cause as foreign material and replaced the j5490 body unit, throttle.this solvedthe problem for approximately one month.in march 1999, the condition reappeared, and the dealer replaced the j5330 cable, accelerator control.this repair solved the problem for six weeks. During the week of 19 april 1999, the condition reappeared.i believe thisis a serious safety issue.i talked to the dealer's service department to schedule follow-on maintenance on april 29.i asked themif this was a common problem, and they confirmed that it appeared to be, based on the numbers of 1996-1998 cars they were seeing with similar conditions.

Unable to pass illinois vehicle inspection because the speed control has not work ed in years i'm unable to pass the pollution test.

The contact owns a 1998 cadillac deville. The contact stated that while driving approximately 65 mph, the cruise control would not disengage. The brake pedal was then engaged, but the vehicle hesitated and would not stop. After approximately two miles, the cruise control eventually disengaged and the vehicle came to a stop. There was a recall under nhtsa campaign id number 97v183000 (vehicle speed control) that may be related to the failure, but the manufacturer stated that the vin was not included. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 170,000.

Accelerator pedal sticking which causes sudden acceleration. Consumer had to put vehicle into neutral and step onpedal a few times to release it. Can nhtsa provide further information.

While driving with the cruise engaged the car suddenly accelerated twice.tapping brake and manually shutting off cruise control did not slow the car down. The consumer had to brake hard, put the vehicle in park and shut off the engine to get the vehicle to stop.upon restarting the vehicle it ran [properly.the vehicle was taken to the dealer who could not duplicate the problem.it was later determined that the iac motor was the cause of the failure.

While driving into a parking space the vehicle suddenly accelerated forward, running into a building and caused injury and a fatality. Also, total brake failure occurred. Cause unknown.

Switch on driver's door for rear power window failed.

Interior lights do not come on when the door is opened. Incident occurs intermittently. Also, switch on driver's door for rear window doesn't work. Lock was off. Dealer contacted, and is aware of all problems. Currently has the vehicle, investigating the problem.

Vehicle has a passenger outside mirror tilt feature when car is placed in reverse, however consumer has almost had accidents due to poor visibility. (design flaw).

The abs traction control was not working and the dealer was unable to resolve the problem. The vehicle has been in and out of this dealer repair shop for this problem since aug. 2002 and the intermittent problem with brake failures and extended braking distance keep recurring. Anntena stuck up.power antenna assembly replaced.oil level low and oil light is on.there was no reading on the dipstick.had to add two quarts of oil after driving 1500 miles.oil life indicator was reset.piston, rod and oil rings replaced. Drivers side headlight cover fell off with bulb burnt out.headlamp housing assembly replaced.consumer went to start vehicle and it wouldn't start.battery replaced.catalytic converter rattling.drivers side heated seat/switch inoperative.while giving gas hesitates; struggles up a hill.spark plug wire replaced. Notification by postcard.ordered parts.drivers side window won't go up.replaced left door window switch.ses light on.exhaust recirculation valve (egr) replaced.transmission makes a grinding noise on fast acceleration.dealer found the exhaust pipe at the rear of the converter shifting a cross brace when accelerating.rearview mirror broke off base.

Consumer believes the side mirrors are too small which make it hard to make lane changes.nlm

When going in reverse the rearview mirror automatically tilts down, and does not give a clear view of what is behind the vehicle. Dealer has not seen.

Windshield wipers constantly chatter,dealer says live with it. Tried new blades, inserts etc many times , no help. To this date they still chatter when it is raining. Car is under warranty to 6 yrs and 60000 miles. No satisfaction fron dealer. No response from manyfacturer when complaint was filed months ago.

Consumer states that while driving and no warningwindshield wipers will work intermittently, and it will be hard for the consumer to see during rainy weather. So i was from 2/26/99 to 4/6/99 without windshield wipers.5.complained of noise when turning right, they found no problem, i also complained of rough ride, they replace bushings and lubed bar - felt better for a day, but rough ride returned after that.i feel they have had my car more than i have.i currently have 5225 miles on a 13 month old cadillac, thus is outragious.thank you.

The wheel cracked.the consumer discovered it while placing air into the tire.the vehicle was taken to the dealer, and the wheel was replaced by the dealer.the crack was 6 inches long in the right front wheel. *sc

I had a tire blowout at 11:00 pm while driving on a freeway.i was unable to remove the wheel lug nuts using the lug wrench furnished with the car(i even tried standing on the hinged arm of the lug wrench) and was saved by a driver of a suv who stopped to help.the lug wrench had an effective arm length of 9 inches and a arm diameter of about 3/4 inch.i later found out that the lug nuts are to be torqued to 100 ft-lbs.i then bought a torque wrench with an arm length of two feet and an arm diameter of 3 inches.checking the torque required to break the lug nuts lose i got values between less than 100 ft-lbs up to 200 ft-lbs.the manufacturers should be required to furnish lug wrenches that ordinary people can use to replace the tires.furthermore, they would also be required to specify a maximum value for torquing lug nuts in addition to a minimum value because a large variation in torque between the nuts on each wheel warps the brake drums or disks and results in severe surging when braking (what fun i had with this condition when dropping down off of donner summit into sacramento - the whole car was shaking violently when i applied the brakes).i complained to the dealer who was already aware of the lug wrench problem(which they could do nothing about) but not about the unequal torquing problem (they posted a list of my torque readings in the shop).i also complained to cadillac customer service but got nowhere with them.

While traveling the wheel studs failed resulting in the wheel falling off of the vehicle (ohio traffic crash report).*mjs

Dealer has replaced and turned brake rotors numerous timesi have replaced rotors and calipers and pads with all new parts also and brakes on front do not release completely all the time and keep warping rotors and wearing out brake pads this has been done many times since being bought in 2000.tire rims also leak air and tires keep going low this was serviced by dealer and myself not cure has been found yet.
