On three gm vehicles that i know of (02 century, 05 century, 06 grand prix) the headlights will go out on high beam unexpectedly. Replacing the headlight high beam switch fixes the problem. The 06 grand prix was still under warranty but the dealer refused to correct the problem. They said that until the switch fails completely they will not replace it. Going 70 down the interstate at night and suddenly no lights is not very safe. I know my vehicle (02 century) was high mileage but the other two are not. The dealer not fixing the grand prix that belongs to a friend of mine kind of ticked me off.

While driving at night, headlights and dash lights completely shut off!

Instrument panel cluster faulty! the digital odometer does not work. The gear shift display (prnd321) does not work either! i have to feel when i switch from park to drive.during vehicle inspections i have to guess my correct mileage, because it's blank! i replaced the instrument panel cluster on february 28, 2010.in october 2011 the explained problems recurred!

Electronic odometer light failed.therefore one can not read the odometer.from talking with the service tech at the buick dealership in anderson, indiana he said it is a common occurrence.sounds like a problem that should be covered because of a defective part.he told me the cost to get a new odometer to is around $250 to $300.the odometer still operates it just can not be read because the led light went out.the led light can not be replaced according to the technician the whole unit has to be replaced.

The contact owns a 2002 buick century. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle stalled without warning. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic. The technician diagnosed that the electrical wiring needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 68,000.

The contact owns a 2002 buick century. The contact stated the gear selector failed to illuminate on the instrument panel which caused the uncertainty of knowing which gear was selected. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who informed her that the odometer needed to be replaced because the gear indicator light was located in the housing. The odometer must be sent out of state for over a week. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact will notify the manufacturer of the consistent failure. The approximate failure mileage was 80,000.

Intermittent headlight failure.on several occasions, the headlights have turned off for no reason or warning.this includes the dash lights.this has happened approximately 6 times in the past two years resulting in an extremely dangerous situation.four of the instances were on roads with no streetlights - an interstate highway, and winding country roads.the only remedy seems to be to move the turn signal lever, both up and down, (turning the cornering lights on - providing a much needed source of light), and back and forth, as if turning the high beam lights on and off.eventually, the lights seem to come back on.pulling and pushing the dash mounted light switch on and off does not affect the situation.when mentioned to the local buick dealer's service writer, he had no idea what i was talking about or how to approach the problem.

Intake leaking antifreeze - cost too much to repair for me. My only car to get to work. Replacing bearings today for sticking back brakes.all interior accessories are broken; cosmetic mirror, ashtray, center console, passenger windshield wiper stripped motor, 1 window working.still owe on car but cannot fix everything.any help ????

When i put key in ignition to start car, the position of gears goes dark.if i jiggle the key, or turn it back (very slightly) the panel lights up momentarily. It is scary driving with no indication of which gear i am in.i was told it was the cluster?

Each time i exit my 2002 buick century i get shocked.it has increased in intensity, and i sometimes get shocked twice.i took my vehicle in to have the local dealership look it over, as well as check to see if any of the recalls on the vehicle had been taken care of, as it was a program car.i was assured that none of the numerous recalls on the 2002 buick century applied to my care.i was also told that there is nothing they can do about my being shocked when i exit the vehicle after driving it.this concerns me a great deal, as i have read about people fueling their vehicles who cause cumbustion when the static electricity is discharged.

I have three lights coming on {check engine soon}{anti lock &trac off} this has been going on for over two years and several trips to the garage is not getting it repaired. I am told when these lights are on i lose antilock breaks and traction control.]]

The contact owns a 2002 buick century. While driving 20 mph, the engine stalled. The dealer stated that the electrical system was faulty. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000. ..updated 05/20/15updated 7/6/2015

The odometer cluster lights go out and sometimes come back on for a few minutes and back off while driving. Therefore you can not see mileage and the shifting of gears. The dealer recommends sending it back to the factory for 2 weeks while they repair it at a cost of $ 2000.00 or drive the car without repairing.

Most of the complaints on the buick century 2002, my car has them:1.windows not working, only passengers' up to now2.hard upshifts on transmission3.mileage on the digital odometer won't show4.volume on steering wheel never correctedso, what's being done about it?

This is an addendum to complaint/odi #10499646...this was the scariest experience of my life, driving alone in darkness, at 55mph, and without warning, headlights & dash just shut-off !! no other vehicles on road to help light my way, couldn't see anything, almost ran off the road & got killed, only had this car 10days!! thought i got a good deal too, but now i'm stuck with a car i can't drive at night. Spoke directly with gm customer relations specialist on 3 separate occasions, who sent me to their gm dealership for inspection. After gm rep spoke with their dealership, they decided due to the age of the vehicle, and mileage, they're not responsible to assist!! i cannot understand, nor will i accept, how this situation could be anything other than a "safety issue"!! numerous complaints filed on this same vehicle, and many having the same problem, just floating around out there, waiting for the next poor, unsuspecting buyer. I will never purchase another gm product, and i will also do everything in my power to discourage "anyone" i know from doing so. They won't stand behind their defective product, which is now my problem. As i told the gm rep, i can only imagine how many people have not lived to tell "their" story...(no response from them on that comment).

I purchased the car from family auto easley sc, ive had several repairs on this car that didnt help, radiators, thermastat, water pump, hoses replace, alternator, coolant recovery tank has brown sludge inside, the windows didnt work, its moist inside from the floor being wet had a heating core put in didnt help, the carpet on the inside is damaged, the paint is coming off, had a alternator put in , run hot all the time, dosnt matter, buy coolant, oilput water in it, manifold gasket is bad in it ive lost power several times, the last time i did it was on nov 6 this year on the way to work lost power while driving ran into a gurad gate right beside a dumpster, i had to get it towed, its in the shop getting the bumper fixed, i had to get a rental car, i had to get my car refinance with dilco of greenville sc he couldnt believe how much i was charge for this car over 13,000.00 dollars, so i was over charged and sold a lemon and its not fair to me and this car is not safe for me or anyone to drive, i want to be able to drive a car without being afriad if im going to make it or not or get stranded

I was at the gas station tried to start my vehicle and it caught on fire at the gas station many could of been killed and or injured

- the contact purchased a pre-owned 2002 buick century, from buick landmark automobile of tuscaloosa on 10/22/2002 with 24733 miles on the odometer. In june 2006 the contact said the vehicle began to make clicking noises when turning right. In 6/7/2006 a goodyear store replaced the rf hub assembly and the rf outlet tie rod at a cost of $542.91.the contact was told that the abs was vibrating causing the abs light to come on when in slow speed left turning. Two days after the contact experienced the same noises.the abs light turned on.the contact took the vehicle to leigh buick of tuscaloosa on 7/6/2006 located at 3200 skyland blvd tuscaloosa al 35405 tel.205-556-1111. The dealer replaced the left front hub, at a cost of $456.92.two days later the contact began to hear the same noise again.the contact took the vehicle back to the dealer where the left front hub was replaced at no charge. The contact drove the vehicle a few days after, but noticed the steering wheel was very loose and began to vibrate very hard making the car un-drivable.the vehicle was taken back to the dealer on a flatbed truck on 8/21/06.on 8/23/06 the dealer replaced 2 bulbs and the third brake, the vehicle drove normally.shortly after, when making a left or right turn the contact could not apply the brake at all while turning.the anti lock brake system light turned on, but it turned off when completing the turn. The contact also sensed a burning smell.the dealer said the vehicle needed the pump valve block replaced and the abs pump mount fluid.the two rear power windows do not close, the digital odometer and digital panels are not working. The contact can not tell the mileage, speed or gear of the vehicle. The contact wants to make a complaint since there are so many issues. Updated 2/21/2007 -

Horn is located in the center of steering wheel and is very difficult to get ti to sound.consumer feels it's so difficult because airbag is located there.consumer cannot blow horn, and feels this is a safety issue.*jg

There's a problem withignition, consumer has to jiggle key to get it to turn. Please provide any further information.

The vehicle caught on fire, which was caused by the electrical wiring under the air bag.

Wiring under fuse panel caught on fire and melted wires in fuse box.no fuses blew to protect wiring.

I have a 2002 buick century limited and while driving 60 mph on the interstate the low trac light came on, the anti-lock brake light came on and the car started shuttering and making a loud noise when braking. It also pulls when the brakes are pressed when the lights are on and the brakes are hard to press. When i turn the car off the lights go off and there are none of the symptoms until the lights come on again. I was told it was a faulty wheel speed sensor and was going to get it repaired when all of the sudden the car overheated. I get the car serviced regularly and it has never overheated before. After having the thermostat and the water pump changed i was told that the problem is either the intake gasket or the head gasket. I was told the dexcool antifreeze breaks the gaskets down and the car could leak antifreeze without being noticed. I had the car towed to my home where it'll have to sit until i can afford to get it fixed. I own the car and i am on a fixed income and cannot afford the prices that mechanics want to charge to fix the gaskets. I found information online that buick knew about the dexcool and had a recall but it's no longer active and i would like to know why. I think they should fix their mistakes and not make their customers pay for them.

The contact owns a 2002 buick century. The contact stated that there was a coolant leak. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the intake manifold needed to be replaced. The contact mentioned that the failure recurred three times. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure who stated that they would contact her at a later date. The vehicle was repaired. The failure mileage was 87,784 and the current mileage was 146,556.

The contact owns a 2002 buick century. The contact stated that she took the vehicle to have an oil change when the mechanic stated that there was oil in the radiator. In addition, the intake manifold needed to be replaced and the radiator needed to be flushed. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The failure mileage was 47,400. Had service engine light coming on periodically and was loosing coolant, but could not find any leaks, was told it was probably faulty light, or leak in tank. Took car for oil change and ask to look for any leaks, found coolant in oil. Intake manifold gasket failed and had to be replaced. Was told due to coolant being dexcool and eats the gaskets.

When i had an oil change at about 32,000 miles the mechanic indicated the oil was a quart low.i had the cooling system flushed at about 50,000 miles and the mechanic noted oil in the antifreeze. At 55,000 miles the car now needs a new intake manifold gasket at a cost of $800 to $900.gm faces a class action lawsuit in canada for this same problem and many u.s. Blogs indicate this is a common problem.service stations are reporting that this failure is common and due to a design defect.the warranty expired at 36,000 miles.because of this, buick says it has no responsibility for this problem.in addition to the gasket problem, i had to replace the wipe blade mechanism and leaking wheel bearings.these, too, were premature problems and not due to any abuse or neglect of car maintenance.gm will not recognize a history of problems due to the fact i went to a local precision tune for maintenance.the dealership i purchased the car from moved about 45 minutes away from my home making it very inconvenient to go there for maintenance.

The contact owns a 2002 buick century.the contact stated a piece of fuel injection detached and blew off the valve.the check engine light illuminated and the vehicle was taken to a mechanic.the repair cost $1,200.the technician stated that he had never seen anything like this and it should not have happened to her vehicle.the contact has not notified an authorized dealer or the manufacturer. The current and failure mileages were 59,263. Updated02/01/08.*lj

I have a 2002 buick century and have been told that the intake manifold gasket has to be replaced since gm did not issue a recall of which they should have.i am afraid i will break down in the car with no help.i am a widow who is currently unemployed and can not afford to fix the car.i have paid the car in full and just want them to fix what they screwed up. I was not even aware there was a problem until my low coolant light started coming on and i noticed there is a leak.

Intake manifold gasket leak at 61,233 miles,719 dollar repair. Updated 12-12-07.the lower intake maifold gasket, thermostat werereplaced as well. Updated .

Vehicle shakes very violently. Consumer believes its an engine problem.

Lower intake gasket leaking coolant heavily. Hopefully caught problem in time. $900 repair.this is a known gm problem that they will not address! this car should be recalled, or gm should provide help with repair costs!.

Oil/coolant leak from defective manifold gasket on 2002 buick century special.

The contact owns a 2002 buick century. While the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed that the vehicle was leaking anti-freeze. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer who stated that the gasket in the rear of the engine was leaking and advised the contact to monitor it. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer who stated that the head gasket needed to be replaced. The vehicle was being repaired. The vin was unavailable. The manufacturer had not been notified. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was approximately 115,000.

Intake gasket failure, oil in the radiator.

Had coolant light coming on periodically and was loosing coolant, but could not find any leaks, was told it was probably faulty light, or leak in tank. Took car for oil change and ask to look for any leaks, found coolant in oil. Intake manifold gasket failed and had to be replaced. Was told due to coolant being dexcool and eats the gaskets.

2002 buick century custom, had to replace the intake manifold gasket at 69k at a cost of over $700. Shortly thereafter, front left and right wheel bearings failed and they were repaired at a cost of $350 each. Now at 80k the head gasket is leaking coolant so badly the car cannot be used. The approximate cost of this repair is $1400. Car was purchased new, fully maintained and adult driven.

I currently have a 2002 buick century custom with 107000 miles on it. I had a starter catch fire cause of a large buildup of oil coming from either the head gasket or the manifold gasket. This issue needs to be addressed. Driving at high engine temperature with cause a major safety issue for anyone driving short or long distant.

- the contact stated that after startingthe2002 buick century the coolant light came on, after driving a couple of miles the light went off.the contact took the vehicle to the garage which performed a pressure test andfound a hole in the manifold.the failure could result in a fire.the vehicle has been repaired. The lower intake gasket manifold was leaking coolant. Updated 02/22/07.

2002 buick century. Consumer states design defect *tgwthe consumer stated his wife took the vehicle to a repair shop because the windshield wiper blade was stuck. However, it was discovered the radiator was almost on the ground and in the process of becoming detached.she was referred to an auto body shop. The body shop stated the radiator mount was dry rotted beyond repair and should have never occurred in an eight year old vehicle. *updated 10/20/11.

I noticed that there was sludge in the coolant tank after i got a low coolant light when the coolant was not low and the temperature was normal.i brought the car in to the buick dealership and was told that oil was leaking through the intake manifold gasket into the coolant channels of the manifold. The oil was interfering with the coolants sensor causing the indicator light to come on.the dealer told me the system would need to be drained, flushed and refilled after the manifold was removed and the gasket replaced.this was going to cost over $800.00the dealer indicated that this was a fairly common occurrence on the 3.1l engine so i asked why this was not a warranty issue to which he responded that gm would not cover this problem.i asked what would happen if i did not do the recommended actions; response, possible water migrating into the cylinders or oil/water mixing, all very bad for the engine.because i like the car, i had the work done as i use this car for extended trips and i do not want to find myself with an engine failure.since this does appear to be a common problem which may be aggravated by the use of dexron cooling fluid, i believe that gm should be responsible for repairs and/or reimbursement for such repairs that have been done.

The coolant light never illuminated warning the consumer of a problem, subsequently the water pump in the consumer's 2002 buick century failed. For the second time the coolant sensor is not working.

Intake manifold gasket failure. Replaced gasket.

I brought my car to my buick dealer for service and was informed that the coolant had become sludgy. They told me that the system needed to be drained, cleaned and refilled and would cost me $129.00. I was very concerned about what could possibly cause this, and the representative couldn't tell me why, but that they caught it early and wouldn't be a problem. I then took a look on the internet for information on this problem and found out about the class action lawsuits against gm for their dexcool coolant problems in their cars, especially the v6's. I called the dealer to tell them that i had a problem with having to pay for this repair and that i was also concerned with possible damage to my system, intake manifold gasket problems and the effect that would have in the future. They told me they would call me back. This is a widespread problem that needs to be addressed by an outside agency because gm is not stepping up to the plate to handle it. While not causing an immediate physical danger, it does certainly cause a secondary danger to motorists who break down on the road and the other motorists around them. Please step in and do something about this. Thank you.

2002 buick century intake manifold/gasket fails at 31k miles. Coolant in the engine and mixed with the oil. All of the prior service and maintenance were performed at gm dealerships (where this should have been discovered prior to failure). Oil, lube, rotations done without waiting for indicator lights (2-4 times per year), all recommended procedures completed (including new brakes, throttle body and fuel injector svcs). This was a known issue regarding dexcool eating away the gaskets but gm filed bankruptcy to avoid full settlement and now dealerships claim ignorance to the issue. Now i have to pay $1500 to have the engine & radiator disassembled for cleaning.i was informed that labor is the bulk of the cost. Why won't gm charge the customer for the part and not the labor. I was told by the service advisor that the parts involved only cost $200-250, but i have to pay $1500 for a known issue/failure the manufacture was/is well aware of and is a safety issue that causes abrupt engine failure! i am so upset that my vehicle was so well taken care of and would fail with so few miles on it. My chevy corsica also failed due to dexcool (water pump replacement at 60k miles) and i did not receive a penny from the dexcool settlement (even though i filed and was eligible). Gm should be held accountable for these failures that are still an issue. An engine failure in traffic is a serious defect.

Failure of intake engine gasket on 2002 buick century with 110,000 miles.

Bought vehicle in 01.20.07 with 56,943 miles (2002 buick century custom). Sometime (around 62,000 miles) notice engine hesitates, after warming up, hesitation disappears. Asked my mechanic and his first question was if white smoke was coming off the tail pipe, i said no. A couple weeks later, at startup (early in the morning) the tail pipe smoked for a good 2 to 3 minutes, again, once warmed, stopped, and engine run well. This went on for another 2 weeks, during this period i asked again my mechanic, but this time i mentioned the white smoke, no oil smell, his response was i was burning antifreeze.went back to dealer to see what they could do to help me, left the vehicle for diagnosis, then they offer me a 15% discount on parts of and estimated $1500.00 work. Since this was unacceptable, i called buick, explain situation, and also mentioned fact that an engine this age - mileage - this kind of failure was not acceptable. After 4 calls from buick, it took buick 2 weeks to come back with ha resolution: that the best they could do was 15% discount on parts and 15% on labor. At some point i wanted to pickup the car and i was told it was not safe to drive.meantime, i did some research and found out that nhtsa did handle this type of issues.further research in the nhtsa web site showed that (like my mechanic told me) this was a recurrent problem with this model.i picked up the car on 10.25.07 at a final cost of $1,157.00.

Intake manifold gasket leak at 61,233 miles,719 dollar repair. Updated 12-12-07.the lower intake maifold gasket, thermostat werereplaced as well. Updated .

Manifold intake gasket failure (leaking massive amounts of coolant/water into crankcase) with only 60,000 miles on the engine!

The contact owns a 2002 buick century. While traveling 50 mph the contact noticed that the high beams had suddenly shut off without warning, within a few seconds, the contact noticed that the headlights had began to operate normally. The vehicle was taken to the dealership where the light switch was replaced. The current mileage was 111000 and the failure mileage was 80000.

Traveling at night, once in heavy traffic with lights on low beam and other times in lightor no traffic with lights on high beam, all outside lights go out creating a very dangerous situation. Does not matter if the manual switch is used or if the lights are on automatic. The only thing that makes them come back on is switching the high/ low beam switch. Miles traveled or length of time traveling makes no difference ...random occurrence. Replaced the headlight switches at a auto repair shop made no difference.

While driving, when high-beams were turned on the entire headlight system would shut down leaving driver with absolutely no visibility. Fortunately the headlights did come back on as the dimmer switch was activated and the low-beams did come back on. I can only use my low-beam headlights as this issue happens most times the switch is activated.

Headlights go out completely for a few seconds until the bright/dim is switched and then come on.this has happened infrequently since fall of 2014.doesn't happen when at dealer service or when we test lights after returning home. Dealer says can't be repaired until they can get the incident to repeat.lights are fine for a while & without warning the situation occurs again.very alarming! a friend with a buick regal 2002 has the same problem.

Dt: the contact stated while driving at night he switched the low beam headlights to high beamheadlights, resulting intotal loss ofexterior lighting.he swerved to miss oncoming traffic.after several attempts of turning the dimmer switch on and off the lights came back on without any further problems.he has not taken the vehicle to a dealer for inspection. No repairs have been made at this time.

The reverse lights and tag light stopped working due to fraying of wires near trunk hinge.fraying also cased the "trunk/door" light to illuminate on dash until repaired.cheap plastic covering did nothing to prevent fraying from contact with trunk hinge.at 3000 miles, had to go to dealer three times to have steering column replaced due to loud noise when wheel was turned.sun visors are hard to use, they hit rearview mirror when adjusted.inadequate even when used.very loud popping sound on driver's side at times under brake pedal.good car otherwise.

When i bought my 2002 buick century in 2003, i asked the dealer to turn off the drl on the car. They insisted they could not because of manufacturer & highway safety laws, but said i could contact the mfg. But that it required much paperwork & an extensively satisfactory reason for this to be done, so i quit asking. Once again i have decided to try to get the drl on my car turned off, since it seems to cause so much confusion to on coming traffic when i am signaling to change lane or turn. I contacted buick & got customer support rep, that had no idea what drl even is, & declined to escalate my case up. At best she told me to go to a dealer. So the dealer tells me to go the the mfg. Then the mfg tells me to go to the dealer. Can you do anything to help me? all i want is to drive my car without the parking lights on! i thought it was illegal to drive with parking lights on.

The contact owns a 2002 buick century. The contact stated that the interior and exterior lighting intermittently failed without warning. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 51,000.

2002 buick century with several problems. Consumer states that the electric window controls had to be replaced due to failure. Headlights started working intermittently. Multi-function switch needs replacement.the consumer stated using the turn signal indicator or the high beams, apparently triggered all the lights to go out. The heater controls did not function properly.

Dt:the contact stated the headlightsturned off without warning.when this happened the contactwas able to turn them on with the manual switch.the vehicle was taken to the dealership, but they were unable to diagnose theproblem.the lights went out while at the dealership.they suggested the multi-function switch should be replaced, although they were not sure this will correct the problem.

Dt*: the contact stated the headlights occasionally failed to remain illuminated, leaving the contact stranded without light while traveling at night.this has occurred at least six times in the last year, currently happening about every other week.the service dealer could not identify the problem.

Headlights on my 65,000mi 2002 buick century just quit and then come back on. This problem has occurred 4 four times. The other times it appeared as though i misclicked, but the last time i had to pull over and click the dimmer switch 30+ times. This is a real safety issue and i barely was able to stop in time from 55 mph. The outer headlights are only on in low beam and the inner only on high beam. There are 4 headlights this can't be right all 4 should be on in high beam setting on. Need to check on this headlight operation issue, but felt i should pass this on that these gm models do this.

While drivingat any speedheadlights shut off intemittently.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.

At a stop on a hill whendepressing the brakes there was a minorvehicle roll back once the foot was off the brake pedal to depress the accelerator pedal.dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. The vehicle was having problems with excessive rollback while the vehicle was in drive.when the vehicle was tested it rolled back a distance of 15 feet at a speed of 15mph.the vehicle stalled disabling brakes and power steering.the headlights on low beam do not merge.they act as two separate spotlights and distance appears to be limited.the consumer stated that eventually general motors repurchased the vehicle.*tc

Dt: contact stated whenturningbright lights they will be on bright for a while , then the headlightswill go off andvehicle will bein total darkness until she clicing back to theregular headlights.this happened just about every time she put onbright lights. She has been having this problem over a year and she had complained to the dealer and because it was not under warranty it would cost $118.00 an hour to diagnose the problem.

I have a 2002 buick century custom.the multifunction light, wiper, cruise switch intermittently fails and i lose my headlights.i was driving on a mountain road the first time it happened and i had to turn on my hazards and find a place to stop with a lot of traffic behind me.on two other occassions i had other motorists flash me to let me know to turn on my lights.the failure has happened a lot since and i have to jiggle the switch to get it to work.this failure is extremely dangerous and has put me at serious risk.i have now figured out that jiggling the switch will bring the lights back on but that is no help if i don't know when they are out.i went to the buick dealer and they want nearly $500.00 to fix this.i don't have the money to fix it and i will have to park the car for a few of weeks until i can afford to fix it.my real concern is that this could cause a serious accident because you don't know when it will happen.please feel free to have buick contact me.

Consumerhaving problems withfuel tank volume.

Began hearing popping noise across front, from wheel areas.took into dealerwhere i purchased the vehicle several times.they drove it and heard the noise but couldn't find what it was.kept getting worse and on 8/31/04, they contacted another dealership where they had a vehicle with the same problem.they supposed fixed it, but now it's doing it again.doesn't matter if the roads are wet or dry.now, another problem.on 5/28/05, i made a trip and stopped for fuel and went to a fast food place next to the gas station and while waiting for my order, an alert bell started dinging and my fuel gauge went down to the empty mark.i could not find anyplace open to get help (memorial day holiday).after driving about 4 miles down the highway, the gage came back to the full mark.it did not buck or act up before this happened.also, low tire light keeps coming on.tire pressure is ok.

On 12/12/03 after pulling into the local snappy carwash, our 2002 buick century would not crank the engine.the ignition would wind up but not engage the engine.we called our dealership, but because it was 44,000 miles on the car, and the 36,000 mile warranty is now up, there was nothing they were prepared to do to help us.we called other dealerships and they responded the same.we had to leave it and rent a car because of travel that could not be postponed.upon our return monday night, my husband decided to check if the car would start.it immediately started and ran fine for one entire day.on wednesday, 12/17/03, it quit again while on idle in front of our local wal-mart.nothing would make it start.while my husband was in the store to buy starting fluid to check if that would start it, i kept bumping the starter and finally it cranked.we have been told it is a common problem of fuel-pumps in these vehicles. We are now being charged over $500.00 for the fuel pump replacement and labor to do the service. Can there be a rebate for us,since it is happening to others?this is a dangerous occurance, since we could be left stranded anywhere.thank you for your help.

I was at the gas station tried to start my vehicle and it caught on fire at the gas station many could of been killed and or injured

Automatic transmission has very harsh shift between 1st and 2nd gears and also between 2nd and 3rd.seems to happen after warmed up and on highway for awhile.

While stopped on an incline, the consumer removed her foot from the brake pedal and the vehicle rolled back several feet. Thedealer claimed that the roll back was due to the weight of the vehicle and the torque of the wheels.the dealer informed the consumer the vehicle operated as designed.

Transmissions on american cars are messing up too early.my friend's dodge caravan went out after the 36000 mile warranty, month later.other cars the solenoid on upshifts 1-2 and 3-4were causing harsh upshift problems on many cars.old cars before 2000, transmissions did not fail for more than 10 years, today's model transmissionswere causing problems the first 3-5 years.these problems on the 2002 buick centuryhappenedthe last 3-5 years.1.harsh upshifts on transmission, 1-2 3-4.2.power windows, after 3 years, didn't work on rear windows andwere to slow on the front windows.3.steering wheel stereo controls volume was never fixed after taking5-10 times for repairs.these were thousands of dollarsi wasspending for 4-5 years of driving.if nothingwas done about this i will be turning toyota, camry.

Both front sides has been repaired, but the abs, service soon, alsothe traction off lights . Comes on and staywhile the vehicle is in motion. Once i turn vehicle off it goes off.

I have a 2002 buick century cusedan and while turning or drivingthe low trac light comes on, the anti-lock brake light and the service light comes on and the brake pedal shutters and makes a loud noise when braking.....and sometimes just going down the road.when i turn the car off the lights go off and there are none of the symptoms until i hit an uneven spot in the road or go over a bump etc.the lights come on again.

The contact owns a 2002 buick century. When reversing or making a u-turn, the abs warning indicator illuminated intermittently. The failure occurred on multiple occasions. The contact diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the failure was related to the braking system. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage and vin were unavailable.

Applied brakes for the stop sign and the pedal went all the way to the floor. As it turned out the brake line had rusted out and fluid was lost.

Tire feels like it doesn't want to spin. No grip.

My 2002 buick century developed a problem with the following lights coming on - service engine light, anti lock.i had the car at my local buick dealer and repairs was made to the right front wheel. This work was done under warrunty. I had to make several trips back to the dealer to get the lights stopped from coming on, now the lights are coming on again and it is very annoying. The problem started last may 2003. It was corrected around august 2003 now in april 2004 it is starting again. I have no idea if i am having brake problems with these lights intermittently coming on. They are constantly coming on in damp weather.

When it rains thebrakes squeal. Even when the humidity is high the brakes will not hold. When the brakes are applied, the vehicle skids forward. The consumer tookthe vehicle to the dealer. The consumer was told by the dealer that this was how the vehicle was designed, and there was nothing else they could do.

This latest series of incidents occurred while braking hard.the anti lock braking system failed with a grinding sound occurring.the "anti lock" brake light goes on, the "trac off" light goes on and the "service vehicle soon" light goes on.since this incident, both while braking and when i'm not braking i will hear the grinding sound and then the lights might go on and stay on till the car is shut off.this problem has been going on for about 2 weeks and happens on most of my driving trips.about a year ago the same problem occurred and it took till may to determine that it was a faulty wire harness on the left side of the car.i only found this solution by going on the internet.the difference between the two sets of instances is that turning left and slowing down triggered the issue from a year ago while there seems to be no trigger for the current series of anti lock failures.it seems that many individuals have had this problem and when it kicks in while braking it takes longer to stop the car. I would think that this is a safety hazard and should require a full investigation before somebody gets hurt.

2002 buick century with brake failure customer states that brake problems this early only means more problems to come**ccthe consumer stated the vehicle was service for a brake squeak for a period of 1 to 2 days after it rained the consumer was told there was no problem, but the dealer did clean and adjust the rear brakes. The consumer stated the brake continued to squeak. While performing maintenance (wheel bearing replacement) i discovered a through and through crack in the steering knuckle at the point of attachment of the tie rod end on the drivers side, the casting was split which would have allowed the tie rod to disconnect and potentially fatal consequences.the car is a 2002 buick century custom with 138,000 miles.

Dt: contact stated there was small lever on the side of the steering wheel that was used to raise the steering wheel up or down. Contact'shusband raised it up on 7-28-05,and could not get it to come down. The dealership toldcontact that warranty would expire on 7-5-05 and she will have to pay to have them look at. Had the same problem with the steering wheel ever since the day after they bought the car, around 7-2002. The first time it happened was on 7-5-202.to fix itthe dealer jerked it into position. Since then her husband has taken vehicleto the dealer for the same thing, and each time, the dealer just jerked it into place.the car has only 14,000 miles on it.

The consumer states that the vehicle is having problems with the steering.the steering was replaced and the problem still exists.the dealer was contacted.tsthe consumer states that when parking, the vehicle is hard to steer-replaced the power steering pressure hoses.(internal gear failure-replaced)*scc

The dealership was unable to perform a front end alignment because the front tie rods were worn and about to fall off.this problem occurred because the tie rod could not be greased. *mr

The rear defrost had 5 lines that quit, also caused radio antenna that is on the rear window to quit when turning on rear defrost. Window was replaced and same thing has happened with second window. Dealership accused me of damaging window and will not replace second window under warranty. Also have chirping noise near speedometer that dealership has not been able to fix after 4 repair attempts. Dealership has destroyed entire dashboard trying to repair noise.

Consumer 2002 buick century front end assembly fell off. When consumer released the tension off of the steering wheel the slip joint on the lower end of the steering column dropped leaving consumer with no steering.***nar received 9-29-05***the consumer stated there were 2 bolts that held the engine and transmission onto the frame under the body. The dealer re-installed both rear subframe bolts.

Knocking or popping noise after vehicle gets wet, and before it dries off. Dealer is stonewalling and acting completely clueless.*la

1.sunvisors are not wide (long) enough to block direct sun glare entering at top-outer corners of windshield.gaps at outer ends between visors and corner postsare approx. 2 1/2 inchs.dealer's service manager and buick's customer service have told me that this is the only visor design made by gm that will fit.the mounting location for the pivot cannot be moved.at the other (inside) end of each visor there is a pull out extension, that is no help to cover the open area.on driver's side the extension prevents tilting the visor forward against the windshield, which would possibly help if it were not stopped by contact with the rearview mirror. Danger frommorning and evening sun glare is not to be taken lightly.i am not the only driver that can be momentarily blinded by it.century appears to be the only model with a very serious problem in this regard.the configuration of visor and/or location of pivot in 2002 rendevous and park avenue serve to block the glare where the century does not.the dealer's rep says visors from another model cannot be substituted in the century because the mounting location is differnt in each model.i would not have boughtthis car if i had known ahead of time about this hazardous condition.the car appears to bewell engineered for safety in other respects.

Thefront seat bolts rusted.

I purchased a new 2002 buick century from auto mall, putney, vt on 0/06/01- only have 57,000 miles on the vehicle now. Air conditioner fixed 3 times; still not working;brakes fixed; still squeak before my car could be inspected the line for theback brake lights which were rusted needed to be repaired in feb 2008 [$300].on march 1, 2008 my brakes went; brought to nearest garage; brake line rusted out and was replaced [$200] i was informed by the mechanic that the rocker panels were rusted and should not have passed inspection.informed dealership; brought vehicle for diagnosis and estimate [$5,000].was told by gmac that vehicle's warranty ended on 11/06/07.i am awaiting word weather they will cover some of the repair work.

While driving 60 mph, the vehicle would heavily vibrate. This would cause a distraction to the consumer. The dealership was notified, but did not resolve. Please provide more information.

Driving thur ohio from mich ,hit large pot hole, did over one thousand dollars damage to the steering, could have been a lot worse, car must not be made properly to withstand hitting pot holes, this should be a safety issue there are hundreds of pot holes in all states .the state of ohio does not responsibility for there pot holes they are a drive at your risk state....

The contact owns a 2002 buick century. The contact stated that the oil was being changed when he was informed by an independent mechanic that the hubs were detaching. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 120,000.

2002 buick century, while driving approximately 60 mph the abs braking system light illumindated and the track off light illuminated.the contact staed once the vehicle was turned off and turned back on the light did not illuminate instantly but came back on after driving a few miles.

The odometer on my recently purchased 2002 buick century (from a buick dealer with 22,000 miles and still under warranty) appears to be off by approximately 4%.on a recent trip of 450 miles (a trip taken and measured many times in the past), my ending trip mileage registered as 467 miles (an overage of 17 miles).on the return trip, i used numerous interstate mileage markers to compare distances.for each 100 miles traveled, the odometer registers it as 104 miles.to me, this is an issue of the speedometer not being correct, plus more miles are registering than are actually being placed on the vehicle. This affects service recommendations and the resale value of the vehicle. The dealer offered absolutely no help.other than saying the mileage markers must be off - they suggested i use different size tires.(to my knowledge these are the original tires on the vehicle). Is there no way to recalibrate the speedometer?

The contact owns a 2002 buick century. The contact was driving at 65 mph with the cruise control set. Suddenly, the vehicle increased acceleration without warning. The brake pedal was applied several times and then the gear selector was shifted into the neutral position. The engine was turned off and restarted. The vehicle was able to resume normally. The failure occurred two different times. The contact stated on the third occurrence the cruise control was not engaged. The vehicle was taken to an authorized dealer where the technician informed that the failure could possibly be contributed to the cruise control module. The cruise control module was disabled. The failure mileage was approximately 105,000. Updated 10/01/2010. *ljupdated 10/04/10

Tire feels like it doesn't want to spin. No grip.

My 2002 buick century odometer is over recording miles by 4%. After taking my car to the buick dealer two times i am informed that gm responded that there are no federal regulations regarding the accuracy of an odometer. Buick (g.m.) responded that 4% error is acceptable to them. I have a copy of the g.m. Response to the dealer(g.m. Document id#1216409---service vme-odometer accuracy, #pi00746-(12/24/2002). When i file my federal tax return-form 2106 business expense since i travel 40,000 miles a year i would be over reporting 1.600 miles at a 4% rate.is there a federal regulation regarding the accuracy of an odometer. I am able to find state and federal regulations regarding fraud and roll-back of an odometer but nothing regarding the accuracy.this would also have an effect on the regulated fuel mpg requirements. Any published mpg would need to be reduced by 4%.

When braking from speeds of 30 mph vehicle accelerated with no known cause.vehicle was towed to doan buick, westridge road, rochester ny. Dealership has not diagnosed the failure as of yet.please describe details.

Gas pedal is too low, causing driver to feel pressure when accelerating.owner states this is a design flaw, and is aware of other complaints.consumer stated that if the pedal extended approximately 1 inch forward it may be more comfortable and easier on leg.

Dt:the contact stated afteracceleratingto pass anothervehicle the cruise control would not deactivate.she tried with the brake pedal and the off switch for the cruise control it did not work. The vehicle stopped andhe had to stand on the brakes. Once the vehicle stopped the rpms increased. She took the vehicle home and could feel something in the transmission.there was metal on the oil dipstick.the vehicle has not been to a mechanic for inspection and no repairs have been made.the consumer stated she was able to pull off to the shoulder.updated 01/11/05.

2002 buick century all four power windows cease to go up or down.***nar***the repair shop stated the mechanism of buick's consists of plastic material in one piece, so the entire unit has to be replaced.

Most of the complaints on the buick century 2002, my car has them:1.windows not working, only passengers' up to now2.hard upshifts on transmission3.mileage on the digital odometer won't show4.volume on steering wheel never correctedso, what's being done about it?

At 44,9xx miles the front driver's side window in my 2002 buick century failed. The regulator failed and the window dropped of it's own accord. I was on a trip and had to leave my window open for 2 days until i returned and was able to get it to a dealer for repairs. It cost me a $100.00, (extended warranty), but the bs with having it fail for no reason, just pisses me off.

Windshield wipers stop in the verticle position. This has happened twice, the first time it was repaired under warranty on 10/17/03. Crank arm broken. It happened during snow storms, the wipers failed after a couple of inches of light snow got on the windshield .

Wipers have failed twice during moderate to heavy rain.wiper arms get out of sync and hang up together in middle of windshield.dealer has charged to tighten nut on blades, but has not resolved the problem.last incident occurred on a crowded bridge at night in the driving rain creating a very unsafe situation.

Windshield wipers shut off in the verticle position, started at 48,300 miles on vehicle. I have talked to other buick owners who have had this problem. Why has there been no recall to fix this obvious defect ?

I got a brand new car, receiveda letter saying the windshield wipers needed to be checked.tookvehicle back to dealer, and they saidwindshield wiperswere alright. In severalpastwinter thewindshield wipers stayed in upright position and would not go down, blocking my vision, took it back, they put a new motor in it, and it worked until the following winter, same thing happened, and they fixedthe windshield wipersin 2003,2004,2005, and 2006, my warranty ran out in 2007, so they would not fix the windshieldwipersany more.i eel l like they prolongingthe windshield wipers until my warranty ran out, andi was stuck with them upright while driving.i have looked on the computer and found at least 6 more people with the same problem.

The windshield wipers will not go down, but stay in front of my vision, blocking the view.i tookvehicle tothedealer, they tried to fix the problem , but every year in winter they still stick in the middle of thewindshied.four years ever winter they block my vision.

The windshield wipers refuse to lower when turned off.

When starting the vehicle in the morning, the windshield washer motor comes on squirting washer fluid. The directional arm control must be held toward the front of the car to stop the washer pump from operating. As the vehicle warms up, the problem ceases until the next morning. The vehicle is a 2002 buick century with only 7800 miles. Due to age, it is out of warranty.
